No, you're right. They're a graceless metaphor with a conclusion that makes what they were representing into apologism rather than condemnation. It's badly done and shouldn't be defended.
I don't think Americans are ignorant, though, just maybe as blinkered about the nation in which they live as we can all be (Australians are hardly better). But it came across that way and I probably do have biases that need unpicking afterall. I'm sorry.
The Seanchan are ImperialismTM, and especially American Imperialism in all its aggressive social conditioning and slave-owning ugliness. There's a reason the Seanchan culture is a mash up of China and America particularly. It's deliberate. It's also a wonky metaphor written by a well-meaning Southern white man in the 90s, so it's far from perfect. Ultimately the Seanchan are no more or less evil than Americans during most of the USA's colonial history. That is to say they are and they aren't. Some swallow their conditioning wholesale, others fight against it, some relish the power the system gives them over others, others are uneasy about the cruelty expected of them yet continue to comply regardless, some break away altogether in an exceedingly painful process. Any dissenting information is buried, any outward revolt is squashed brutally, but it does exist. Of course it exists.
Maybe it's because I'm not American but I find irony in Americans especially being absolutist about the Seanchan because it feels like they're either condemning themselves or blind to how the USA has operated globally and historically. That might be a poor way to see it though, idk.

ohh oh!! I'm seeing hockey player mike and figure skater will back on my dash so I wanna share a couple of my fav thoughts that I've had for this au which areee:
will sitting in the spectator stands of the hockey rink wearing a nice comfy turtleneck and having big heart eyes the whole time even (especially) when mike body slams an opponent into the shielding boards ..and when he takes off his helmet and shakes his hair out
and then mike - who knows will's love for music, and that having the right songs for routines is important to him - just in awe watching will really compliment the music in every move he performs on the ice. he looks really good out there, if not just because will's outfits are really ,,tailored to him too
this au is always fun in fandoms I have many thoughts 🙊
#the turtleneck is cream coloured btw I've spent time designing these things 👏🏽👏🏽#if any terminology is wrong it's bc I'm australian and we literally play field hockey here due to the no snow HNDJD#byler#will byers#mike wheeler

I'm honestly still mad they left stormhawks on that cliffhanger. It's a solid cartoon if you want to give it a watch.
Non Canadians are welcome to answer if youve seen any of these! I considered not putting TDI on as it has a high chance of winning but I wanted to put shows I remembered watching a lot of so....

watching racists get mad about Nico Parker in How To Train Your Dragon......whenever ppl are shocked that super light skinned Black ppl in the public eye like Megan Markle and Nico Parker are being shit on by racists I have to laugh at the shock. Because as a super light skinned Black person (I don't like using the term white passing because I'm not deliberately trying to hide my Blackness), I have had anti-Black experiences my whole life. Being super light skinned did not save me from that. Did I get it as bad as darker skinned folks? Absolutely not and I'd never claim that. But the answer is yes people really are that anti-Black that you can look like Nico Parker or Megan Markle or even lighter and still get shit thrown your way because at the end of the day white people and racists in general simply don't want Black people to exist. Like there actually isn't a version of a Black person that white people want because they hate us.

Hey my publisher finally got my book series, The Silent Trilogy, up on Apple Books! Check it out!!!
My publisher calls Silent Trilogy 'X-Men meets Good Omens'. That's not wrong but it is a series about abuse, colonialism and the importance of love in ways those aren't.
In more detail: the Silent Trilogy is an urban fantasy series set primarily in Hobart, Australia. It tells the story of the dainisa, a not-so-hidden magical community, focused primarily on their non-binary Princess, Torao Yamaguchi.
Desperate for her child to have a better life than she did, the leader of dainisa Amaya Yamaguchi sparks a revolution to claim Australia as a magical continent where dainisa can live in accordance with their own laws, not those of humans. However fighting power is a complex thing in a world built to function on injustice, and a pretty siren desperate for revenge could ruin it all…
Narrated through the eyes of a human who doesn’t quite get it, the Silent Trilogy is about the narratives we build of history. It's an exploration of trauma, the ways people learn to live with it, and how bigotry works. Also there's angels and demons messing things up. More info on the website!
I finished this series a long time ago but I'm still very proud of it!! It's a niche story I had a lot of fun with. I wrote this NB protag before I even came out myself so that's always cool. And every time I have to reread a part of the series I have a really hard time stopping cos I enjoy my own work so much lmao. So hopefully you'll enjoy it too!!
(it's also on Amazon if you prefer kindle, and if you don't wanna support either, well, chuck me a couple dollars on Patreon)
#support indie authors#silent trilogy#booklr#support independent books#original fiction#uhh i think that covers the tags i was meant to use lol#no shade to xmen or good omens btw those are literally two of my fave things#i'm very pleased by the comparison#writers on tumblr#idk please reblog#and pls buy my books if you can!!#auslit#australian fiction#tasmanian fiction#tasmania#loveozlit#ozlit

just found a WWI podcast that lasted as long as the war holy shit. from 2014 to 2018 so it fits perfectly
#It actually lasts longer because it covers the post war period as well. but the war bit is '14 - '18#should I pick it up?#I'll probably skip the first few episodes because I know about the archduke and the power struggles etc#btw the podcast is still ongoing. There are interviews. episodes on details of the war or propaganda#on stuff that happened before the war but kinda had a role in it#and he's currently revisiting some episodes and expanding them#he published the patron episodes. This is mental#it's ten years of a guy's life#and I still have some revolutions on that revolutions podcast I want to listen to#I should make a guide of the episodes but it takes time#and I have a lot to do#and I'm dicking around#ok from tomorrow I'll start following a schedule or I'll never finish my thesis in February#but I don't want to get stuck in a routine because it always messeses me up#I just need to start working earlier in the morning#personal#anyway this isn't about me this about a wwi podcast that pulled a mash#they should do mash on the southeast front with australian and new zealand troups#or maybe not

Hear me out about the drow...
Okay I know this isn't my usual stuff but it has to be said. Stop giving the drow british accents in your campaigns. Give them Australian accents.
Instantly 10x funnier and also thematically appropriate because the drow's entire backstory consists of bunch of criminal elves being shoved into a harsh and unfamiliar land full of giant spiders by other slightly more british elves.
They're quite literally down under...
In the underdark.
I'm so sorry.
#dnd#drow#dark elves#bg3#Dungeons and dragons#dnd lore#That was awful I'm sorry#But I know in my heart I'm right#Every single drow matron talks like an Australian politician#shitpost#dnd shitpost#I just think if the surface elves have a British accent it's only fair...#drizzt do'urden#jarlaxle baenre#I am Australian btw#This is a joke I swear#But I'm right

Short comic I'm working on
To manage your expectations, it's not a full story. It's really just a test comic. I originally made a sketch to practice comic-making. Then thought: "this isn't bad, I should see what this looks like cleaned up." I proceeded to make a 3D spaceship model for it so I didn't have to waste time agonizing over the ship's angles, chose a color scheme, cleaned up some sketches, and now we're here
#For further context: my ocs are from a NaNoWriMo book I wrote in 2020#it sucks so bad but I've been drawing my characters ever since#during NaNoWriMo 2020 is how I got into the space orcs fandom btw#I have been doing more prep work because I'm considering rewriting it for NaNoWriMo 2023#Idk though I'm also writing a fanfic I'm pretty invested in but that project is almost done anyway#point I'm trying to get to is this comic is part of my prep work for NaNoWriMo 2023 so that's why it's not a full comic it's just... testing#humans are space orcs#humans are weird#humans are space australians#humans are space oddities#aliens#space orcs#humans are so weird#outer space#galaxy#haso artist#haso writer#haso comic

paper deets? go brainstorm crazy
Okay, I'm not gonna go too crazy, because I'm already writing a paper on it anyway. But basically, there was a 2019 amendment in Australia (bear with me, I still need to triple-check there hasn't been another amendment since then) which sought to redefine violent/non-violent protest, but it is also important to note that for many years prior as well, police 'move on' powers have been introduced and increasingly used across the nation. As recently as 2022, Tasmania introduced anti-protest laws. Other states have very similar legislation, particularly down the east side (QLD, NSW, VIC, and also SA).
Not too sure how much followers of my blog know about how legislation works, but anyway, there has essentially been a combination of several acts in each state that combine to criminalise protesting to the point where there is, essentially, no effective way to protest even peacefully. Police can demand that protestors move on because the altered definitions of protest are as loose as 'public disturbance/in a public place/obstructing the regular passage of life in the area etc.' (very rough paraphrasing, sorry, I have so many tabs open from my research, and I'm gonna save the more direct quotes for the actual paper). And once an order to move on as been issued by an officer, and they believe it is not being complied with, they have grounds to arrest.
This is barely the half of it. Not only is this going against the democracy Australia is supposed to be, but there is heavy media influence too over how we as a culture perceive protesting--an activity that is crucial to a democratic system. Without even realising it, Australia is becoming one of the very things we often hate: autocratic. We are fortunate here, but those days are numbered if this trend continues. Our government is supposed to be "of the people, for the people", and yet the divide grows and protest is being demonised.
There is so much more I could say but for now my lips are sealed on the matter until a later date. I know a lot of this sounds kinda wild and I'm not really defending my arguments, but again, I'm already writing about this for a grade and I would rather just keep it all in my head for a few more days as I work on it.
#australian law#anti-protesting laws#this paper is in contrast with one I did about a month ago on french riots#which I massively enjoyed btw#the grade could have been better if I spent more time editing and making the paper more detailed again#so I'm kinda stressing about this current one because I already got an extension#and it is so important I present these ideas well because this topic is Everything#I love talking about civic unrest#which we need a new term for btw because civic unrest does not encapsulate how essential the participation of citizens is to how a state#is run#this is more than violence#more than just “well what's the most peaceful unharmful way we can protest?”#this is part of the media influence over how protests and riots are perceived#anyway enough rambling from me#I am instead going to spend all day furiously typing up this paper and all of tomorrow editing and refining

a lot of the cuties here have birthdays on interesting days (hana's is april fools, alice's is halloween, seong - and therefore jun - is 28 february like omg imagine if u were born on the 29th) and the simple explanation is it is simply me, born on the 11th of september, projecting on characters to have cooler birthdays that fall on days of significance
#sit perfectly still; only i may joke about my birthday being on the 11th of september#worth noting i'm australian so the dates don't even line up but i have to deal with this every dang year#this IS a joke btw that's not why their birthdays are these dates glmdbfm#i'm the video game boy; i'm the one who wins! 。・゚✫ ooc
