During this month we are more conscious of our actions and how they affect others. Israel is the world’s largest producer of Medjoul dates. Let's be conscious of not buying dates that support Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine and apartheid regime. * Major UK supermarkets like ASDA, Tesco, Iceland and Waitrose all sell dates from apartheid Israel as well as local grocery stores * The UK is the second-biggest importer of Israeli dates in Europe 50% of Israeli dates are exported to Europe, where the UK, Netherlands, France, Spain and Italy import huge quantities of the dried fruit. In 2020 the UK imported over 3000 tonnes of dates from Israel, worth roughly 7.5 million pounds. There are two peaks of date consumption in Europe. One is during the month of Ramadan and the other is during New Year’s Eve and Christmas. Boycotting Israeli dates in Ramadan is a concerted community effort that can show we are not powerless. It would be brilliant to see all Israeli dates still left on shelves across the UK and Europe at the end of the blessed month. This would reflect our strength as a community to stand together with a very important message: We will not support the oppression of Palestinians and we will not be complicit in Israeli apartheid. So, this Ramadan #CheckTheLabel and boycott Israeli dates.

would Tywin Lannister have been a good king?

ASoS shows us King Tywin.

He bribes and bullies, cows and betrays. Whether it's the grand slaughter at the Red Wedding or his more intimate and equally vicious abuse of his own son, Tywin knows how he wants to play things. We can say this much about him: Tywin knows his strengths.

The end of ASoS, of course, shows the first of the hard limits of Tywin's style. There is only so much a person can take.

AFFC then gives us the post-match analysis. If it wasn't Tyrion who snapped, it was going to be someone else. Everyone has had it up to here with Tywin and his tyrannical ways. They were queuing out the door and along the street to knife him (and not queuing at all for his funeral). The Lannisters might have won the war, but they made too many enemies in the process, and were on track to lose the peace. That's Tywin's doing as much as anyone's. Tywin's the primary reason for strained relations with Dorne. Tywin set huge chunks of the Riverlands and Crownlands on fire, causing death and suffering at a ridiculous scale not just from the fires and the combat, but from famine, resulting illness, and displacement. Tywin okayed an assassination (and general slaughter) plan based on breaching one of the few conventions that the people of Westeros can rely on to start making peaces. Less directly, Tywin's abusive and toxic parenting and teaching led straight to the political problems that are Cersei and Joffrey. Even Kevan "dw I'll set the Riverlands on fire for you bro" Lannister is starting to ask what the actual fuck is up with Cersei's treatment of Lancel - and what Tywin plans to do about his daughter. Tywin lost everyone but Maester Pycelle. Maester Pycelle. It's just not a tenable situation.

Tywin ruled without building anything for anyone. Even his claim to fame as Hand, decades before the start of the series, wasn't doing anything positive but undoing another's reforms. He didn't seem to want his political power for anything but what it did for Lannister image (read: Tywin's image) - and just like with Cersei, his lack of imagination limits him. In Tywin's case, ironically enough, by seeking power to build a legacy he absolutely hamstrings his ability to build a legacy. As soon as Tywin's gone, the only thing he did - terror - vanished like a shit down the privy. What did all that clever betrayal and horrible violence actually accomplish? Not a whole lot. Mostly getting people dead and traumatised.

Basically, Tywin brute forced the trains into running on time...for a bit. And there the achievements end.

Do you ever get tired of the worldbuilding in your works? Like, do you ever want to include some whimsy magic, but the pre-set rules of the world don't allow you?

Also, I might have missed it, but is the concept of the "players code" a thing in your story? We talking admin panels, lag, etc

Ouuu those are two really good questions! I'll answer the code one first, since i think it's important to the dbhc story and something people should know if they didn't previously notice it:

My understanding/headcanon/conceptualization for Hermitcraft (and dbhc, by extension), is that the world and players are very much comprised of code. Code is to the fabric of their minecraft reality like atoms are to the fabric of our reality, and Admins (opped players, i suppose) have special access to and responsibility over this code: they can see into it and adjust or fix errors to ensure players are kept safe and worlds are managed well.

This is perhaps most obviously seen in the "A Delightful new Partnership begins!" Comic in which Xisuma notices something isn't sitting right in the code around him and takes out his 'control panel/admin panel/console/etc' to investigate. I talk about it in a little more detail in my breakdown post of this comic, where I talk about the possibility of 24 getting access to the code, scrambling it up, and not really knowing how it works enough to put things back right. It's also implied that he may be manipulating/messing with Xisuma's memories by deleting parts of X's player code (I note that i didn't want the glitch effects to necessarily be associated with android-y effects), as we see him forget parts of this encounter and constantly shifting in and out of place as he gives unsettlingly neutral/positive/encouraged answers to a manipulative and intimidating Android 24.

I also love incorporating like, console commands into the comics and au :D such as '/clear queued visual cache' from Don't Let It Reach The Heart :] Though i know it's different since he's an android hehe

I also just think code integration into a 'realistic' interpretation of Minecraft-based stories opens the door for really fun translations of Video Game experiences (i.e., interpreting lag as something like disorientation, disassociation, or misalignment between a player's code and the world's). It's super fun to think about so I love making it part of these stories :D

Regarding worldbuilding! I don't think I've really grown tired of it, as far as I know (assuming you're primarily asking about dbhc, but i would say the following goes for my original works, too): When it comes to storytelling and worldbuilding, I have a very very, uh, logically-tracked mind about things? The reason things happen and the way things work all need to make sense within whatever system i've chosen/come up with/been working in, so I often have a lot of fun (or experience a lot of turmoil) trying to make events and characterizations fit within that world. If I ever have a new idea that doesn't fit in that pre-determined set of rules, I either: move on pretty quickly, not lingering on things that wouldn't be possible so I can find ideas or variations of the non-conforming thought that *would* work, OR try to think of fun ways to make a non-conforming idea work by developing a new rule that still coexists with previous ones (i.e., maybe there's an exception in the way the world works for reason x/y/z, and the more i develop that possibility, it could make previous characters or ideas more complex in turn! It's like a very fun puzzle to me, and it's why i love storytelling so much :D

He finds himself exposed — his body out in the infected landscape, his conscious clawing to define what he believes is right, his heart begrudgingly deciding to find a new home on his sleeve. Maybe there’s more than a virus roaming the new world that can bring a dead man back to life.

[4/28/24] HULLO. It’s happeninnng. I’ve spent the last few weeks working on this comic, and I gotta make this post so I can start queuing pages & link this in them! This is the most like….legit? Comic endeavor I’ve undertaken perhaps….ever. I’m very nervous about committing to how long it will need to be lol. This story is dear to my heart — zombie content is kind of my very favorite. I’ve always found it to be a great backdrop for exploring themes like grief, coping with change, community, and learning to live again. It’ll be a long haul but I hope you’ll ride it out with me!! Tomorrow I’ll be posting the first two pages. After that a page will post every Monday/Wednesday/Friday. As of this post I’ve completed over 20 pages so that I have a good lead on what’s posting and continuing to write, so I’m hopeful that’s a cadence I’ll be able to maintain. I’ll update this post weekly to include the most recent pages the way I do with my main comics master post. All pages will be tagged 'Life After' and I'll tag any pages with zombies in them with 'zombie' for blacklisting etc.

if anyone was a pre-roast beast carving grinch, it was billy butcher. he was never one to get into the holiday spirit, claiming he had nothing to celebrate. nothing you did could help change his mind, he was so set in his ways. you, on the other hand, loved the holidays. they filled you with a kind of joy that only came around once a year. it had always been a big holiday with your family, and you carried on a lot of the traditions you all had. 

you had your three types of cookies to bake: almond crescent, peppermint pinwheels, and gingerbread men. you started playing christmas music on black friday, queueing up your favorites right away and changing the radio station on the weekends to the one you knew would be playing nonstop holiday tunes. you had your whole apartment decorated just days after thanksgiving, and it looked perfect every time. so perfect, in fact, that billy couldn’t help but be in awe when he came by to visit you.

he knew you loved the holidays, he just couldn’t understand why. to him, it was just any other time of year, just much colder and far more annoying when you had random people ringing bells and collecting for sham charities. it was a load of bullshit to him, but rather than dim your light, he kept his mouth shut when he was with you. today was going to be a little harder, though, because he was joining you on a little shopping trip.

“why are we doing this again?” he asked, watching as you wrapped your scarf around your neck.

“because i picked a few names from an angel tree, and we’re going to give those kids a merry christmas. come on, this is the fun part,” you said.

“angel tree? the fuck is that?” he held the door open for you, and you both ventured out into the cold.

“okay, so, it’s a tree that has the names, ages, and christmas wishes of children from families that might not have the means to celebrate christmas. so, you pick a name, or a few, from the tree, and you fulfill their christmas wish! i think it’s a really great cause, i do it every year,” you explained, walking beside him down the sidewalk. billy said nothing, but just simply shrugged his shoulders. sounded like a load of shit to him, but you were excited for it, so what was the harm in humoring you?

you made it to the department store, and once inside, you pulled out the tags of the children whose names you picked. to billy’s surprise, you had around five tags in your hands, and he guided you to the side as you read them out.

“okay, i picked ones who asked for clothes, but not as many toys. they’ve got the sizes listed, so this will be a piece of cake. come on!” you tucked the tags away, took billy’s hand, and started making your way to the children’s section of the floor. 

“i thought kids wanted all them fuckin’ noisy pieces of junk. why’d you pick clothes?” he asked, watching as you thumbed through the wracks of clothes.

“clothes tend to be more expensive, and not as many people feel inclined to pick them. they think toys are easier, and that all kids want toys, no matter what. but sometimes, all these boys and girls want is a new winter coat, since theirs is two sizes two small. or warm pajamas, or new sneakers because their feet are too big. they don’t ask for much, they know they can’t. so why deny them this in favor of some plastic?”

billy fell silent as he watched you hold up a coat. it was purple with a soft lavender lining, a hood on the back, and pockets that zipped shut. it looked warm, cozy, perfect for a little girl. you set it over your arm and went back to looking, and billy held out his hand.

“here, let me hold the tags. i’ll read them out to you,” he said, and you smiled.

“thanks. here you go.” you handed him the tags, and he read them over himself. just like you had described, four out of the five asked for winter jackets. one asked for a sweater, another for new winter boots. he glanced up at you, and you now had a few more coats in your arms, and you looked over to confirm you had the right sizes.

“all right, you think these will do?” you asked, holding up your haul.

“i think they’re perfect. let’s go find that sweater, and those boots.”

you walked along together, and with him beside you this time, you looked through the children’s sweaters. this one was for a little girl, age six, and nothing was really speaking to you. but then, to your surprise, billy held up a light blue sweater with beautifully knitted snowflakes on it.

“what do you think of this one?” he asked, angling it so you could see better.

“i think it’s perfect, but check the size.”

“already did. it’ll fit her, promise.”

you smiled, then gave him a thumbs up. he smiled a bit, then draped it over his arm before you went on to find the rest of the items on the tags. soon, both his and your arms were full of other clothes, the coats, and one teddy bear that billy picked out for a little boy. you made it to the register, and together, you split the cost of everything. once it was bagged and you were on your way, billy wrapped his arm around your shoulders and tucked you close to his side.

“you’re a good one, you know that?” he asked as you walked.

“so are you,” you replied.

“nah, not me. always been a heartless bastard.”

“a heartless bastard wouldn’t have found that teddy bear. or that sweater. give yourself some credit here, butcher. you’re gonna help make this christmas the best one some of these kids have ever had. it’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all. season of giving and all that,” you said, nudging him gently. he glanced down at the bags between you, then shrugged again and offered a small smile.

“yeah, maybe it is. but that one woman in the toy aisle was a right cunt. did you see the look she was givin’ me?” he asked, and you laughed.

“oh my god, of course i did! it was like she’d never seen a grown man with a teddy bear before. he was a cutie, by the way.”

“mh, cute little fucker. guess that’s what this is all about, eh? making other people happy?” 

“that’s how i’ve always seen it.”

“then … as long as i get to make you happy, i can give this holiday shit a try. starting next year.”

a whole 365 days away? you smiled. after all, it was a start.

Weekly Progress Update #7// 7/22/24

Hey all, I hope you've all been enjoying these past few weeks.

Writing the morning scene for episode 2 is going well. This time though, I've decided not to push myself too hard like the last time. The first episode took three months, and I was really stressed the whole time because it was taking so long.

But now that it's over it, I feel like I have a better sense of direction of where I want the story to flow and I shouldn't worry so much about how much time it's taking. It's already helping me mentally a whole lot, so go healthy work ethics!

As shown in the preview for episode 2, we'll be meeting the campers very soon! I decided long before I started writing that each kid would be different, not just in looks or personalities, but also by their assigned hobby. This makes it easier for me to tell them apart because at this point I even have a separate Google Doc just for them 🥲.

While I haven’t written their scenes yet, I’m still very excited to start. Some of the kids are ones people will like right away, some will take a bit to warm up to, and the rest... well, they’re still figuring themselves out.

Next month, I'll be going on vacation with my family for two weeks, so I'll have less time to work on my project. I'm trying to finish it at a good stopping point so I won't worry about it while I'm away. I'll also outline some ideas when I'm gone since ADHD is a bitch and I won't be able to resist.

I’m going to try to post updates weekly because I feel like I'm leaving you all hanging when I don't post for a while. Also, I think I should set aside a day to answer questions, so I don't feel like I'm not getting to them quickly enough.

From now on, I'll answer questions on Wednesdays, a nice even day. The only exceptions will be for any bugs people find, since it's better to handle those early rather than later.It’s of aks have already been answered, they’re just queued up for Wednesday at this point.

Important Tips!

Huh? Oh, shoot, that's right. I'm not exactly around for stuff right now, sorry, this is a queued post.

So, uh, I thought I'd say some stuff about what to keep in mind for when you're submitting cards, because I've noticed a couple things that I'd like to pass on.

1. The more effort you put in, the easier it is to talk about your card.

This is something that feels strange to say, because I want to feel that everyone puts in as much effort as they can when they submit. I'm no professional critic, so I'm not going to tear everyone's dreams down and say that only suffering creators are worthy of positive feedback. What I'm trying to say is that it's always better to push for the limits and then dial it back than to push up to the edge and say "good enough."

It's far easier than it might seem to see which cards reach that "good enough" point when they are, indeed, good enough. And goodness is good! What that means on our side is that there's a functional card that ends up being particularly hard to talk about because its presented goal is to be functional. Again, that doesn't make for a quote-unquote "bad" card—but a card that's got effort, no matter what kind, gets that hook where we can actually talk about it. Talking about a card's weirdness opens up dialogue, whereas function alone ends up inadvertently stifling it. If you're worried about a card going too far, at the very least you're pushing for a conversation, and that's where the crux of card creation as an art lies.

2. It's okay if it's been done before—just make me care.

Then again, you'll also hear me say that simplicity is the way to go for winning cards. That's a bit of a hard line to balance, because on the one hand I do like talking about the kooky nonsense that people submit here from time to time, but I also love a well-executed trope. I suppose the challenge here is where "well-executed" lies.

For some people, that'll be enough just to reference certain characters or planes or events or the fact that there's a Saw in the set about murder-house-clown-horror. That much never gets my engine going. No, it's the matter of choice, of circumstance, of history, of all the possibilities that the mechanics and/or flavor are depicting that matter. Cards have action, and cards also have impact, and cards also-also have their own little world where this all takes place. If I could break down how every part of a card mattered, then I sure as hell would, but that's a post for another day when I don't have the world on my shoulders.

All I'll say is that you gotta consider, for any given trope, what the emotional hook is for someone who may not otherwise care about the trope. You're making an argument, and you're here to win me over.

3. Ambiguity is the mind-killer.

And by that, I mean that "I don't get it" will create frustrations upon frustrations. Where are there the biggest potential ambiguities? Great question, me, let's see.

Name: If you're going for something esoteric in the name, the rest of the card's gotta explain it. Actions need to be connected to the name.

Flavor text: Is there someone talking? Is it related to the action of the card, or something before, or something after? Does it flow well off the tongue? Show it to someone else—do they understand?

And most importantly: how are these elements connected?

4. Don't add flavor text if you don't need it.

If you have a lot of rules text on your card, you're good without flavor text. If you can't think of anything that's not already being expressed, some up with something different. If you're not confident, keep writing until you are. Creative writing is hard. Really hard. Trust me. In the end, you're just gonna have to keep at it. Pro tip: read more if you want to get better at writing. Read beyond what you usually read and it might surprise you.

5. And if nothing else, add an art description.

Art is integral to a lot of Magic cards. Seriously! If you feel that you're missing anything, use your words to say what you wanna say. Or if you're really not sure how to describe it, draw it yourself! Draw it badly! I'm a terrible artist and I still absolutely love drawing because sometimes you just have to get those ideas out of your head. It matters to your vision and it matters to the card.

Adding mood, placement, color, etc. can create the context that cards need that otherwise can't be depicted on the text or even the flavor text. Treat it as part of the main dish, as it were.

I know I've said some of this stuff before, but I hope you're still reading and learning like I am. Lord knows I've got a lot to learn.
