Posting my Ultimate Byler Evidence/Analysis List here directly because it probably makes it more convenient and I should have done this a while ago. XD
There is so much proof for Byler being endgame in S5 of Stranger Things. They are so cute together, and so much in the show has been building up to their relationship. I just wanted to share some of my favourite Byler analyses, because they are so cool, detailed, and in-depth. I love reading about all the hints, symbolism, and subtext for Byler, it's amazing how much thought must have been put into all these things. Why go through all the effort of adding these details if they aren't actually going anywhere with them? Mike is so queercoded, and they are truly in love with each other.
🫥 Just gonna leave some good Byler analyses here 🤐
Most of the links go to written Tumblr posts, and a couple of them are Reddit posts. So it's a lot of reading. If you prefer watching videos over reading, I highlighted my Byler YouTube playlist in green so it's easy to find.
And apologies for any of the links that aren't working, I know some of the posts have been deleted now sadly, but there's no way I'm re-numbering all these so I'm just leaving them in. My fellow Bylers, please stop deleting your amazing posts. ;-;
So anyway, here is the list of some of my favourite Byler evidence/analyses of all time (not in any particular order):

To B With Love: The One With The Honey Moon
I had a lot of fun learning about 19th century San Francisco and thought folks might like to see where Steve & Billy spend their bonding retreat.
If that interests you at all, more beneath the cut.
(Cow Hollow 1870)
Bordering the marina district on the bay, Cow Hollow is still a neighborhood that exists in the city today, and parts of it can be seen in The Princess Diaries, which is irrelevant but dear to me.
When the first settlers arrived with the gold rush it was called Spring Valley, known for the numerous freshwater springs that fed into the fertile lagoon, as well as for grassy meadows and sand hills inhabited by wildlife. All those grassy meadows were great for farming, and the area came to be known as Cow Hollow after its many immigrants took to lucrative dairy farming. The price of milk was high in the city at that time and a local farmer could easily support a family on dairy production.
Cow Hollow (Chinese vegetable farm 1883)
Its main thoroughfare, was until the early 20th century an unpaved road which linked the developing city with the Presidio. As San Francisco rapidly expanded the area prospered and became a fashionable district for Prominent San Franciscans. They came and built their fancy houses and shops and businesses followed them. From about the 1860s to the late 1870s there were your standard gentrification tensions between the farmers and the fashionable set, which ended when the city banned cows in the area in the 1880s, effectively ending farming in the area for good.
Cow Hollow (The Attorney General's private estate ensconced by trees)
Perhaps in defiance people continued to call it Cow Hollow, and good on them for that.
This neighborhood makes a lot of sense to me as a place Steve's cousin would have picked to hide him, as it is "comfortable", but not as congested as the city proper as well as close to the bay if a quick retreat is needed by boat.
*Bonus view of the Golden Gate strait from the Crissy field shoreline 1870
The same view in 2015
The house Billy & Steve stay in is described as an octagon shaped cottage, with a cross gabled roof and wrap around porch. Octagon shaped houses were a hot fad for "forward thinking individuals" in the 19th century that started with this doctor who published a bunch of papers, detailing his research into the human body and how the enlightened individual could use their environment to live their best life. Apparently, the flow and function of the octagon shape was superior in his book. Anyway, thanks to him and the trend setters we now have a nice collection of historical houses with this quirky, not all that functional shape. There's a full list online but I'll just include a few that were built around the 1860s
(McElroy House - San Francisco)
(New Jersey: super cute but I can imagine the tiny, weirdly cornered rooms just by looking at it)
(San Francisco: some modern updates obviously but I love the roof work)
(Not sure where these are)
And the one I used a direct reference for Steve & Billy's little retreat.
I love the gables, the porch, just everything. I can picture it on a hill with a view down to the bay, and I loved the idea of them being able to just follow a road to the sea.
That was the first image that came to my mind when I was outlining - the boys hand in hand on their way to the beach. Disheveled, not quite 'done up' all the way but no one to see them if they did. Just being young and starry eyed for each other. Frankly they deserve it after all I put them through lol.

Niki Blethers: Echoes of Wisdom gameplay (spoiler free)
I've only been posting about EoW's story/characters/aesthetic so far. I think it's time to gush about the gameplay itself for a while. Honestly, I would've done this sooner, but I've had the hardest time finding the words to describe just how GOOD this game feels when you're playing it. Like the title says, there's no spoilers in here, just discussion of raw gameplay, but I've gone ahead and put most of it under the cut to avoid clogging everyone's dashes.
First thing I noticed right off the bat is the movement and controls. I don't know what voodoo witchcraft the devs used to make this, but just moving around in the world feels so silky smooth. Which is excellent, because it turns out a surprising chunk of the gameplay involves rudimentary platforming.
You can jump in this game. Just, right off the bat, no items required, that's a thing you can do. And it's not like Link's little hops in Breath of the Wild either. These are proper jumps.
Outside of combat (which I'll get to in a minute), you mainly use the Echoes to explore. Building bridges, getting up on high ledges--stuff like that. There's no weird collision or confusing perspective that makes placing Echoes difficult. When you move, you move in the way you actually WANT to, and when you interact with an object, it goes the way you'd expect. I know this shouldn't surprise me--this is Nintendo after all--but janky platforming is one of my pet peeves when it comes to gaming, so I deeply appreciate how polished EoW's is.
EoW draws a lot of inspiration from Breath of the Wild when it comes to puzzle-solving. Once again, there are multiple different solutions to any given challenge, and progress isn't locked behind acquiring specific pieces of equipment. But unlike BotW, EoW doesn't give you all the puzzle-solving mechanics you will ever need at the start of the game. Instead, it merely provides you with the means to acquire those abilities for yourself.
Once you've made it through the tutorial section, you will only have a handful of basic object Echoes, plus a couple of weak monsters to help you fight. At this point, the world opens up for you, and you can go just about anywhere you want (though the story can only be progressed by completing Main Quest objectives, which are a bit more linear than they were in BotW). There's a real incentive to explore Hyrule here, because discovering new objects and creatures is the only way to expand your arsenal of Echoes.
Case in point, I've mostly just been focusing on the main quest storyline, and haven't spent as much time exploring all the different areas. As a result, I ended up finding myself encountering a puzzle in the main quest that I wasn't able to solve with my current collection of Echoes. I had to leave and go find new ones. If that sounds like a tedious backtracking nightmare to you, don't worry. This game is very generous with Waypoints that you can warp to at any time and from anywhere. Getting back to where I was after I'd found the Echo I needed took roughly 30 seconds.
Now, while I love the Echoes as a gameplay mechanic, they are also the source of my one and only complaint with this game: namely, the inventory system. Throughout the game, you will inevitably collect dozens, if not more than a hundred individual Echoes to choose from, and finding the specific one you want quickly becomes a chore after a few hours of gameplay. I've said this in another post, but Nintendo really needs to figure out a way to give us a customizable quick-select function--some way to equip just a handful of Echoes to a scroll wheel so that you don't have to bring up the pause menu to avoid cycling through your entire collection of Echoes. Coincidentally, this was also my biggest complaint for Tears of the Kingdom. I guess someone over at Nintendo just really enjoys scrolling through long lists of items. Anyways, it's not a huge issue, it's just one of those annoying things that feels like it should've been ironed out at some point during beta testing.
While EoW feels very comfortably Zelda-ish in all other aspects, the combat is radically different from what series fans are used to. I think that more than anything is going to be what makes or breaks this game for people.
Outside of Swordfighter Mode (which I will also get to in a minute), Zelda cannot do any direct damage to enemies by herself. If a monster gets close enough to hit you, you don't have any immediate defense or counter-attacks. This means that every encounter with an enemy has to be approached from a small distance. You have to think about how you're going to defeat enemies before you actually fight them, otherwise you will get overwhelmed.
While you are given plenty of objects to hurl at your foes, a lot of the combat will be fought by your own monster Echoes. There's a large variety of creatures to collect Echoes of, and they all have different abilities and fighting styles, which means certain monsters will fare better against one kind than another. But the game doesn't tell you about any of those advantageous monster match-ups. You have to figure those out for yourself.
Creature Echoes can be directed to attack anything you're currently Z-targeting, or they can be let loose to attack according to the whims of their AI. Echoes can also be directly moved around with the Bind ability, which is handy for repositioning any monsters who might've gotten stuck on some terrain or what have you.
You have a limited amount of energy to spend on Echoes, which means you can only have so many out at once. That energy is immediately replenished once an Echo is defeated or recalled, which allows for some pretty hectic swapping strategies that are a lot of fun to pull off. Individual Echoes have their own energy costs, based on how strong they are. So you can't just sic 3 copies of the same mini-boss on every Moblin who is unfortunate enough to cross you.
The best way I can sum it up is that the combat is like a turn-based strategy game set in real time. And as someone who has played an ungodly number of hours of Fire Emblem, I really enjoy it. I downright revel in strategically summoning minions to fight for me (my favorite attack is spawning in a bunch of crows like a malevolent little witch). However, if you're someone who prefers the more direct style of fighting from past Zelda games, this might end up being a deal-breaker for you.
Swordfighter Form is your other major weapon in combat. For a limited amount of time, Zelda can assume Link's abilities and weapons, allowing her to attack enemies directly and do a lot of damage in a short amount of time. But since this ability has limited duration, and the energy guage has to be manually refilled by collecting a specific item, it cannot be your go-to default way of handling every fight. Swordfighter Form can be upgraded as you progress through the game, allowing you to extend its duration and increase its moveset and damage output. But it's always going to be something that you use sparingly, mostly just to get yourself out of overwhelming combat scenarios.
So yeah, I think that just about covers the major gameplay mechanics. In conclusion, Echoes of Wisdom is not only its super cute aesthetic, banger soundtrack, and engaging story. Ignoring all of the more superficial stuff, at its core, this is a really good game, that feels really good to experience. If you've enjoyed any of the past 2D Zelda titles, or even just want to see what all the fuss is about, I genuinely cannot recommend this game enough. Regardless of its differences in presentation, Echoes of Wisdom was made with the same level of care and craftsmanship as any of the other entries in the Zelda series, and I've adored every moment of it so far.

Can I use your hanahaki AU???? I promise I'll give you proper credits. I would be grateful if you'll agree.
Of course! Any and all prompts here on AUideas are fair game -- we've posted them with the intent to share and spark new ideas, so asking for permission is unnecessary. What we do ask, though, is that you make sure to credit us with the original concept so others can find us and be equally-excited about starting their own writing.
As a thank you, here's a list of some new and interesting Hanahaki Disease AUs!
Confused about what Hanahaki's is? Here's a link from Fanlore that explains it in more detail, but the TL;DR is that if Character A has an unrequited love / crush on Character B but Character B doesn't feel the same way, Character A's lungs will slowly fill with flowers until the petals expel from their mouth. Needless to say, this is usually deadly...
In a world where Hanahaki's Disease was spreading like wildfire, Character A watched the news as the CDC decreed a ban on social media for the safety of the public -- fans had been developing fatal cases of Hanahaki's Disease for celebrities and influencers who could never possibly love them back.
Character A has been inflicted with Hanahaki's Disease; they just couldn't control themselves, and when they see their crush (Character B) in public, Character A has an attack. When the petals are finally cleared away by passersby and they can draw in a strained breath, they look up from where they'd fallen and see that they're in the arms of Character B who stares down at them with conflicted eyes. Character B can't help but be concerned for Character A's safety, but the type of flower petal Character A is producing has their favorite scent, and it's taking everything they have to not see if Character A's mouth tastes as good as it smells.
As a divergence of the classic Hanahaki's Disease concept, this universe manifests certain flower types based on the quality of the crushee's heart; the worse a person they are, the more pain and torment the afflicted will experience (thorns, thick roots, putrid smells, etc.). This developed as a safety mechanism to help Hanahaki sufferers break off their obsession quickly, but some infatuations are hard to escape.
Characters A and B had been in a long, loving relationship with one another for years at this point, and they never thought they could be happier...that is, until Character B has a coughing attack in their bed. Character A rushes to their side and their eyes go wide when they see a single rose petal fall from their best friend's lips and into their palm. The room tenses.
As a last resort, some Hanahaki's Disease sufferers choose to sign up for a dating service that aims to specifically pair up Hanahaki's sufferers in the hopes they'll fall in love and be cured. Easier said than done, of course...
"Listen, officers, I know it's a CDC emergency, but whenever I fake a Hanahaki's attack in public, I just get so much sympathy from everyone around me. It's like...it's the only time I really feel loved, you know? I was about to fake another attack here on the street when I found them. I don't know if they're still breathing, but I tried to pull out as many petals as I could-- NO, I don't know their name, but LOOK! Their lips are even more blue than the stupid f*ckin' petals on the ground, so HELP THEM!!" AU
It was thought that when someone died with Hanahaki's Disease, they were all but cured since their love died with them. After the first few bodies were buried, though, flowers matching the ones that killed them always sprouted from their graves. Character A's job isn't to clean the stones or stop grave robbers -- their job is to monitor the Hanahaki remnants' growth, make observations, and categorize new flora.
Obsessed botanist and activist Character A purposefully infected themselves with Hanahaki's Disease, but not for sympathy. They sought out the off-chance that their blood, their body, and their very bones were special enough to warrant the growth of a rare, extinct plant that could save the world. And if they couldn't do it, well, then they'd just have to get creative.
Overseas factories were known for their poor conditions, but a whole new meaning was brought to the word when Hanahaki's Disease began spreading like wildfire. For a small paycheck, these factories would house Hanahaki's sufferers and collect their petals to use in perfumes, ceremonies, etc. With the fatality rate of the disease being so high, they have a hard time keeping their stock consistent (without some foul play, that is).
Looking for some more Hanahaki's Disease ideas? We've got you covered! Here, you'll find all our Hanahaki's Disease ideas; if you'd like even more, shoot us an ask.
Hope this helps out, and happy writing!

Bittersweet
(Forgive me for I am new at posting fics on Tumblr.)
I've had a fic idea in my head for months ever since I watched Arcane and saw Viktor develop through the season. This was meant to be a later part of a bigger story that I'm not sure that I'll ever actually write, and it would be the wedding between an Arcane OC of mine and Viktor. So here is a little one off moment, more to get me back into writing.
Warnings: Fem!Reader/OC. Spoilers for 1st season of Arcane. Mention of terminal illness. A little spicy near the end if you look really hard.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bittersweet
All eyes were on her as she walked down the aisle. It was almost unimaginable to her that this day has arrived. They had always talked about marriage, when it would happen, how it would happen. But that had always been for the future and his prognosis had hurried everything along.
We were planning to get married anyway, so why not now?
The guest list mainly consisted of friends and colleagues from the Academy. She could see Jayce and Mel from the front row, smiling at her. She remembered asking them the day before to not let any sadness through, she wanted today to be happy.
More faces. Heimerdinger. Sky. Others from her department and his. Considering how quickly this had been pulled together, she was surprised there were guests at all.
"We're getting married."
"Say that again?" Jayce looked up from his notes at the two of them, confusion lining his face.
She stood tall, a smile on her face as she squeezed Viktor's hand. Taking a glace over, she could see Viktor leaning heavily on his cane. "We're getting married."
A smile spread across Jayce's face as he stood up and walked over to them. "That's wonderful news! When... is the date?"
"In two days."
Jayce for his part tried not to look too surprised at the news. His eyes shifted between the two of them, his eyebrows slightly raised. "That's very soon."
This time, Viktor spoke up. "Well considering... how little time I have left. I just wanted to spend the remainder of it with us married."
And that had been it. No formal plans other than to show up with an officiant and get this done. They had notified who they could and went about making sure they had everything else they need. It was as they were buying their rings that Jayce and Mel had suddenly shown up and dragged them away from each other, stating that they needed the proper clothes to get married in and they were going to make sure they had the appropriate dress and suit.
So here she was, walking down the aisle with a hastily made bouquet, in a simple white dress, a smile on her face as she caught sight of Viktor waiting for her at the front. Growing up, she had been told this would be the happiest day of her life and it was.
But it was also bittersweet.
She had remembered the day he had collapsed and how fast she had rushed to be by his side, the news that the doctor had delivered. She had held her tears in front of him even as she crumbled on the inside.
"You should leave. Move on from me."
"No. If we only have so much time left, I want to spend it with you."
Finally, she reached the front. She spared the officiant a brief glance, but after that, she only had eyes for Viktor. No sign of the usual tiredness in his face as he smiled at her. Despite everything, this was still a happy moment for them and refused to think of anything else. The world seemed to melt away as they said their vows and before she knew it they were leaning in for a kiss. It wasn't a short one but her lips lingered on his as she pulled back and smiled. She squeezed his hands quickly before sliding her hand and linking arms with him. She caught the smiles of their friends as they walked back down the aisle together, now as a married couple.
Her heart was singing. It occurred to her that it never really did matter when their wedding day happened, as long as it did. And as they sat through a hastily planned dinner, they laughed and shared stories of their life together, no mention of the rising tensions between Piltover and the Undercity, no talk of science or their inventions, no acknowledgement of the very reason this wedding had been rushed.
Eventually the day ended ended and they arrived back at their shared home, eager to get each other out of their wedding clothes. It was here when his back was turned that a little bit of her emotions slipped and the smile faded from her face as the weight of their situation made a reappearance. She was quick regain her composure, putting a smile back on her face as he turned and reached for her. She let herself forget as she often did on nights like these when it was the two of them legs, tangled together on the bed. When everything was done and they were resting, she closed her eyes and let herself bask in the feeling of his arms. Nothing else seemed to matter now. Little did she know, in a matter of days, their worlds would erupt into chaos.
!! ART COMMISSION !!
What is art commission? You pay me to make me draw things you want to see, as simple as that, but this is my commission so heed that there are rules/limitations of my own!
If you're seeing this post via reblog, please check the post date and look for the original post, not the reblogs, because commission status and the terms might've been changed/updated by the time you're reading it. I might reblog this myself whenever I open the commission.
Current commission status: CLOSED(taking a break)
SLOTS: [ ] [ ]
Detailed wall of texts guide goes down here, if you're going to apply please read them first so you're aware of what you can expect from me. ↓
I'll ONLY DRAW
Humanoid non-humans
It means anything that somehow shares silhouette of human(e.g. overall disposition of head and limbs), is obviously a person, but is not a human in an apparent way. Be it a goblin, imp, kobold, demon, furry people, inkling, android, whatevs. Go look what I've been drawing to these days, I bet you know what I'm talking about. You can bring them from your original character pool, or from a cartoon, or some games, etc.
Note that what I'm taking now is NOT 'design things from scratch' commission. I require clear references.
Along with those above, I'm capable of drawing some basic elemental visual effects like flames([1][2]), waters([1]), lightnings([1][2][3]), dust clouds([1][2][3]) and earth cracks([1][2]). Just tell me if you particularly want to include those in your commission piece.
I WON'T/CAN'T DRAW
Crossover - I won't put your OCs and other existing media characters together in a same piece. It also applies for different characters from different media.
Webtoon~Comics format
Most sky-scraping tall robotics - Transformers, GUNDAM or in that line of genre.
Background/Landscape details
Excessively complex objects
Realistic modern firearms
Sexual theme, either explicit or subtle
Nudity? - That depends like, Pokémons such as Tinkaton are humanoid and technically naked but look not so naked. Otherwise, unlikely.
Fetishes of all kind
Characters with astronomically huge tits - No offense, I just have no idea how to handle them properly.
Bloody gore element - Though mild body horrors are feasible in some degree. See my OC [Hess] for example. It's neither cuts nor bloodshed.
Independent original characters that belong to somebody other than you - Don't ask for third person's OC, unless you two are friends and there is approval. I'll double-check.
Whatever that makes me feel uncomfortable - Due to strict copyright? Personal preference? It might be anything that I didn't list here. If I don't feeling it, that's it.
THE PROCESS
Contact [email protected], then:
Let me know that you're asking for a commission.
Tell me whether it's about drawing your OC(Original Character. I need you to show me proper reference images. Either via email attachment or via image hosting sites.) or characters from existing media(you know, cartoons and games)
If I don't accept, I'll inform you that I'm not interested.
Otherwise, I'll respond and ask you "how do you want it to be". This is about direction of the piece, which refers to how the character will be presented, like the pose, action, facial expression and more. If you show me the exact references (like pictures searched up on Google) that's better. If you're only gonna suggest me a character and want to leave the rest up to me, you can tell me so. I can still reject your commission at this stage If I'm not really into your direction.
If I fully accept I'll send you a transaction link where you can pay directly from your PayPal balance. While you're at it please put a comment regarding your email under the sum section so I can identify your payment. As soon as I check the payment I'll start drawing, and send you the finished piece via email when it's done.
If there are obvious and critical errors I made like missing tail, flipped hand or such, I will fix them of course, but don't expect too much about further adjustment on demand. Even though the final version turns out not so satisfying to you, I can't really help about it. After verifying the delivery the transaction completes.
+ If you're about to upload the final piece which is larger than 850x850 to website like twitter please tell me that so I will send you an indexed color mode version along with the original. Indexed image loses some color palettes but prevent twitter's horrible png resizing.
PRICING
Baseline is $80 per piece.
Includes 1 character, full color and shading by default.
Different characters in a single piece adds up $40 each, up to 2 more extra characters.
If an extra character is extremely simple or small compare to others I might just consider them as an appendage rather than an extra character. e.g. Big the Cat and Froggy (Sonic the Hedgehog series), Harmony/Annie and their clownfish (Splatoon series)
I prioritize drawing full-body. It can be thigh-up or even waist-up depending on your demand (or at my discretion if you didn't give me any direction) but this does not affect the price.
You can ask for multiple same characters in a single piece, but in that case it most likely be one simpler full-body and several waist-ups. This does not affect the price.
Background is flat white by default. I can fill them with different flat colors or put simple figures or put gradients, or make it transparent as you ask. Pitch black background + outline around the character is also doable(check some of the deltarune fan arts I did). This does not affect the price.
Adding some elemental visual effects does not affect the price.
ESTIMATED ARRIVAL TIME AND REFUNDS
I doubt the discussing part alone can be somewhat dragged on due to the time zone/schedule difference, but I also believe the whole thing can be done under two weeks, or more depending on the conditions and real life issues.
Basically 'no refund' once I receive your payment and start drawing the piece, however, I'd willingly refund you if I can't finish the piece in time due to my own personal reason.
REGARDING THE USAGE OF FINAL PRODUCT:
Commercial use of my commissioned artworks is prohibited.
Do not relate my drawings with cryptocurrency activities.
Final products may be used as a sample in my future commission introduction page.
It's okay to post them online, use them as a header, banner, profile or such for your blogs/social media page, as long as it's non-profit use.
I can post them on my own blog/social media if I'd like to.
BEFORE YOU APPLY:
You need PayPal account for the trade. I'm not accepting any other method as of now. Also please pay with USD if possible!
Please take a gander at fanart, original stuff and other's oc on my blog so you get what my art style is like and how I reinterpret existing characters. Applying for my commission also means that you're agreeing to the visual changes I make in the process.
My drawings are .png files and NOT resize-friendly due to use of binary pen! And the final size of a piece will barely exceed 1000x1000 so keep that in mind if you use super wide screen or if you're about to do something with my finished works.
제가 한국 계좌 쓰는 한국 사람인 관계로 한국인이시면 페이팔을 통한 거래가 불가능합니다
If you got further questions that's not answered here(other than bargaining the price), feel free to ask them via my email. [email protected]
Woah, I made an animatic!
It's been a while since I've done that, eh?
Please do enjoy! And after watching it, if you want some general AU updates, click past the cut below!
So uh, first things first - there's your explanation for where TDTMD Act 2 Chapter 3 is. It'll come out some time in January unless some big autism moment like this happens again, sorry for the wait y'all!
Honestly, like I said in the video's description, I didn't plan for this to take all month - it was originally meant to be for Eclipse's birthday but. Delays happened.
But enough about the month gone past - or even the year gone past! I just KNOW you all wanna know what we have in store for 2024!
Firstly - TDTMD Act 2 Case 01 will still be coming out as it has been! Right now I have 5 planned chapters for Case 01 - and we're like, halfway there! Crazy, huh? But... What do I mean by "Case 01" anyway? Well, you see, TDTMD Act 2 is actually an anthology of sorts! A collection of stories that are all connected by the theme of the Black Arms' effect on PetalBloom - three stories to be exact! Each case is to have 5 chapters each, resulting in Act 2 as a whole having 15 chapters! Quite a lot! But worry not, those who are looking forward to things other than TDTMD, for I am not going to be writing all three cases back to back, no no!
After Case 01 is finished - I've scheduled myself to write a new side story - the FINAL side story for Arc 1! "But Ash, you finished Arc 1 like 2 years ago! Why are you still writing side stories attached to it?", well, mainly because my brain gets on my case about how the writing isn't as good as my newer stuff and how "unbalanced" Arc 1 and Arc 2 are in terms of content - so I'm doing this to make it shush. But also I saw potential still to be found within Arc 1's events, so, yeah! After this post goes up I'm gonna add the name of that side story to the pinned post for hype and all that :]
After THAT - I'm finally gonna go a bit into the catalogue of documented but not written Origins stories listed on the pinned post with The Englishman With The Devil's Eyes. I've been wanting to get to this one for a while now but stuff kept getting in between me and it. But no longer! For after the last Arc 1 side story, Devil's Eyes will finally have it's moment - no matter what! But... I know what you wanna hear...
New Main Stories?? - Yes yes, I hear you. Enough with the Origins and the side stories - when are we getting back to Arc 2 proper? Well aren't you in luck! Being preceded by a short side story oneshot, Mission: FOX FRENZY - the third main installment of Arc 2, will indeed be the next in line after Devil's Eyes! Not to spoil too much, but this one goes out to all you Garrick fans~! 🤭
Beyond That - I have a whole schedule planned that carries to the end of Arc 2 - both officially with the LONG awaited rewrite of Something to Bond Over, and spiritually with TDTMD Act 3 and more importantly, it's corresponding Moonlight Interlude. (what do I mean by that? You'll see~), but if I were to explain the whole of it now, why, this post would be like the new color of the sky! So I'll do it in increments~ All you need to know rn is that I plan to finish Arc 2 this year.
Lastly - The non fic stuff! The most important, I think, is the whole deal with CoC and it's cancellation. I won't go into the why of CoC being cancelled here - but rather, how it effects TEoS going forward. If you were unfamiliar, CoC was to be a webcomic that was a spinoff/crossover with TEoS. It was vaguely referenced in Innate Affiliation - meaning that it needs a replacement. That replacement is... kind of in the works as we speak - I plan to truly start remaking it into the role in February. All I'll say for now is that it's going to be another Sonic AU this time rather than an AU from another franchise. Other than that - I have a special YT video in mind to come out after the Arc 1 side story, won't say what it is yet but, I really hope you'll enjoy it - it's... gonna cost me a pretty penny. Also, this animatic (you forgot that this was the original point of the post, didn't you?) was made completely in Ibis - but after this I'm completely switching over to Clip Studio Paint! I've already been messing around with it since Xmas though - I'm very much willing to show what I've made with it so far! In fact, I think I'll do that on the main art blog later tonight!
I think that's all I have to say! Happy New Years Eve everyone! (Or just New Years if you're one of those time traveling Aussies /silly) Here's to a prosperous 2024!
In honour of today being the one-year anniversary of when I posted the first chapter of Say Something, I wanted to--ahem--say something about this fic. And I thought about sharing the beginning of the next chapter, but 1. it's still the first draft so it's fairly rough, and 2. it's not very representative of the fic as a whole.
Instead, I thought I'd pick short passage I like from each chapter I've posted so far, because what is my tumblr for if not a little shameless self-promo, and I'm proud of the writing (read: neverending rewriting) I've done for this fic!! Plus this gives me an excuse to list all of my chapter titles which I really love as well ahaha.
(And for anyone who hasn't had a chance to read yet, I'll drop the link to chapter 1 here!! If you're interested in ladrien and/or prpr hurt/comfort featuring sentiadrien angst, then this is the fic for you!!)
Snippets are under the cut!
from chapter 1: Maybe They Sell Amok Chains at the Hospital Gift Shop
Ladybug faced away from him now, her stance rigid as she stared out the window. She kept one hand wrapped around the ring, which hung from a chain around her neck. Adrien wondered for a moment where she’d found the chain—she hadn’t left his side for long yesterday. Maybe her yo-yo had a secret stash of Amok chains. Maybe they were sold at the hospital gift shop. She could have fetched one when the doctors took him for scans. When they’d ensured he wasn’t quite bleeding to death by his father’s hand—only almost. Was a gift shop trinket really strong enough to entrust with the ring responsible for Adrien’s life? Hard to tell—that wasn’t the sort of thing people included on promotional signage. And that was…just about right. Adrien’s very existence was false advertising.
from chapter 2: Failure Sounds Like a Dripping Tap
The bathroom sink had been dripping the entire time, but suddenly it was all Marinette could hear. Suddenly it made her skin crawl. She knew there was a way to make it stop—a particular way to twist the handle—but she couldn’t find the energy for that. So the tap kept dripping, each drop serving as a reminder of the mess she'd made. Drip. She let Gabriel get away. Drip. She was failing her team. Drip. Adrien wouldn’t even look her in the eyes.
from chapter 3: Popcorn Ceilings Are No Substitute For Cloud Watching
This time when she sighed, Adrien felt her breath against the back of his neck, leaving goosebumps in its wake. Would those bumps make patterns like the ceiling? If Ladybug could read their warnings, would she back down? “Please,” Adrien whispered. He didn’t have words to explain, but he needed this. Panic sank its claws into him, tearing through old scars that never had a proper chance to heal. The chain bearing his Amok grew heavier. Would he ever get to make his own decisions?
from chapter 4: The Stars Don’t Always Lie
Outside had been about…existing, mostly. About casual touches and errant thoughts. Inside expected a certain something. Words. Interaction. Progress. Adrien had no idea how to go about any of that. He didn’t even realize Ladybug had spoken until she placed a hand on his arm. “Chaton? You okay?” “Fine.” He couldn’t be terrible if he wasn’t entirely present, right? If some part of him seemed to have remained up on the roof, still longing for that freedom he’d barely gotten a taste of?
from chapter 5: Still A Mere Facade
Adrien was curled up on his side, sliding his phone lethargically back and forth across the blanket. He’d been listless all morning, answering her questions a beat too late or not at all. It wasn’t quite the same as the past few days’ silent treatment, but he was still a far cry from the Adrien—and the Chat Noir—that she knew. Marinette just wished she could think of something to say. But the longer she sat there, the more pressure she felt to speak, which in turn made it even harder to cobble together coherent thoughts. And she really had tried everything—there were shockingly few internet resources for how to help your partner come out as a sentibeing. In a last ditch attempt at finding some guidance, she was about to check the copy of the Guardians’ Grimoire she kept on her phone when Adrien froze, inhaling sharply. It took her a moment to figure out why, a moment to process that the other sound she’d heard was that of his phone rolling over the chain bearing his Amok. It always came back to the ring.
from chapter 6: As The World Flickers In Slow Motion
“It’s not stupid.” Nino assured him. “Your feelings aren’t stupid. They’re just… they’re you.” Adrien bit his lip. “Are they, though?” “What do you mean?” Adrien hooked a thumb under the chain around his neck, watching as his Amok hung in the space between him and Nino. “My father had this. The man who never wanted me to go anywhere or do anything. You really think he didn’t use it?”
from chapter 7: Believing in Moments To Come
Nino and Adrien sat side by side against the headboard, Nino smiling at Alya who stood beside him. She was still pulling out folders, stacking them on the bedside table while her eyes lingered on the pizza boxes stacked between the boys. Adrien paid them no attention—his eyes were glued to the spot where Marinette entered the room. He smiled when he saw her. Marinette would have done anything to freeze that moment—finally, a moment where his smile felt real. Where his eyes sparkled the way they had for years whenever he saw her, where his lips curved softly like every time he’d caught her before she could fall. Maybe Alya was right. Maybe she hadn’t screwed everything up.
from chapter 8: Like Molecules In A Gas
He flinched when Ladybug touched his shoulder. “Are you ready?” Midway through her question, an air vent whirred to life overhead, almost seeming to trap her words inside. It would explain why they sounded so far away. Adrien felt just like the air forced through the tube—it didn’t matter what trajectory its individual molecules took, how many times they collided with each other or the walls throughout their journey. In the end, they had no choice but to follow an overarching path, and he had no choice but to keep moving forward either. If only he could remember how to reply.
from chapter 9: A Colour of Wanting More
[...] “The point is, you have strengths and flaws. You make mistakes. You learn. You…you’re human.” His gut plummeted. “Am I, though?” “Yes,” she insisted. “I don’t know how to convince you, but—well, okay, how about this? They took a blood sample, when you were in the hospital. In case…” She shuddered. “Obviously they didn’t find anything strange, or they would have said something. And I’m sure if they did a DNA test, that would come back normal too. If you wanted, I could figure out how to get one done. I’m sure it’s easy.” “I…maybe. But—” “But what? You have a blood type, and…a heartbeat—probably all your organs in the right place too, because they never said anything about that either. And you just…you have this incredible capacity to love people, and you have—” “Existential crises?” “I—well,” she spluttered. “That’s not exactly what I was going for, but…yeah.” She gave a huff of amusement. “I suppose that’s pretty human of you.”
While I have other posts in works right now, I figured I would go ahead a make a post on my top 15 favorite singers. I'll also be splitting this list into two posts since Tumblr unfortunately only allows me to put ten images on one post (boooo). This list is specific to the heavy metal/rock genre, so while I enjoy the voices of Loreena McKennitt and Rory Gallagher, I will be excluding them from this list as Rory is a blues artist and Loreena is a folk singer. But enough with all that, on to the post!
1. Sean Harris
I don't know about you dear reader but I love Diamond Head a lot. This was one of first few bands I listened to when I was discovering the older metal bands as a teen. I grew up with Nu metal and some of the cores, so my only true exposure to the metal bands of old was Iron Maiden, and while I love Dickinson to bits, Diamond head managed to captivate my heart way more. I couldn't believe I hadn't discovered them sooner. I was completely blown away by them, but most importantly, I was completely in love with the voice of their former front man, Sean Harris. The guy has a voice alright, hitting notes I wish I could hit these days (oh how I will always mourn the loss of my voice). While many of their songs are good examples of the might of Sean Harris's voice, the first ones that come to mind are Helpless and It's Electric. I would link them here but unfortunately the versions I personally feel are best are difficult to find on YT, but can be found on my blog if you're interest!
2. Rob Halford
And it would not be a proper list if I didn't add in Rob Halford. What else can I say that hasn't already been said about this man's incredible voice. He has range and still manages to impress many despite his advanced age. I know I have mentioned this so, so many times before, but I saw Judas Priest live once during their Firepower tour and it was an unforgettable experience. They played "Painkiller" and WoW. I am actively struggling to find words that accurately describes what I experienced that night. I never thought Rob could be capable of still being able to go as high as he did during the end of the song at his age but damn I was wrong and I'm glad of it. I truly never forget it, and while I know 99% of my followers know who Rob is, the songs I feel best represent his vocal capabilities are "Here Come The Tears" and "Painkiller".
3. Ronnie James Dio
And next up is my favorite Rainbow and Black Sabbath singer Ronnie James Dio (sorry Ozzy). A tiny guy with a big voice, Ronnie first caught my eye, or should I say my ear, when I first heard the song Holy Diver. I thought his voice was so pleasant for a metal singer I was almost questioning why he decided to go into the genre to begin with, but I am extremely glad that he did. His voice was a big factor in Heaven And Hell becoming such an important album to me and I cannot picture any other singer doing that album justice. Hell, I can't see any singer taking his place in anything he's done, and though I do love Rainbow, I will admit I don't bother with anything that doesn't include Ronnie in it simply because the other two do not come close to being as good as he was. Ronnie had something special to his voice that not many singers do, and while I am aware that I am biased, I do believe him to be one of the best there ever was in the genre, and so this list would not be complete without him as he has damn well earned his spot in my heart. My favorite songs of his include "Heaven And Hell", "Temple Of The King", "Sunset Superman", "Lonely Is The World", "Man On The Silver Mountain", and "I".
4. Klaus Meine
And now for a singer that I don't necessarily consider a metal singer, but he is definitely a rock singer so I am adding him to this list because he truly deserves it, everyone meet Klaus Meine of the band Scorpions. Though a lot of people dislike the way he sings due to his accent showing through, I've never been bothered by it. I actually like hearing his accent in his singing! It gives his voice a unique quality in my opinion! Personally, I don't believe one or two songs can really show off his vocal capabilities, so I would say the albums "Blackout", "Animal Magnetism", and "Love Drive" would be good ones to check out!
5. Joey Belladonna
Back to the metal singers! This time we have Joey Belladonna of my beloved Anthrax. He too is a singer that is way too good for the music he plays but I'm glad he does so anyway because as much as I love Anthrax with Neil and John, I would probably not love them as much if they had a different singer. I will also say that Joey's voice is still going strong! I haven't gotten the chance to see them live yet, but For All Kings was an enjoyable listen! I do hope to see them one day though! Best songs with him are "Madhouse", "Neon Knights (Black Sabbath cover)", "Medusa", and "Lone Justice"!
6. Till Lindemann
Next up is one man with a voice to be reckoned with, Till Lindemann. Though I don't post about them as much as I used to, I hold Rammstein very near and dear to me as they pretty much got me out of a, "musical funk" so to speak, and Till's voice had a lot to do with that. I think Rammstein is the first band in which I actually paid more attention to the vocals than I did the instruments in the background. His voice is not what I would describe as generically pretty. Don't get me wrong, it is beautiful, but it's rougher, brutal, and yet it has this soothing quality to it that I haven't found in other singers. It's also impressive to me that he naturally has a voice like that without training. I know, I know, plenty of other singers have a pretty voice without ever needing training, but Till is different to me okay. Favorite songs in his case are "Seeman", "Klavier", "Stein um Stein", and "Reise Reise".
7. Bruce Dickinson
And of course I am going to put Bruce Dickinson on here. The man's voice is simply too iconic for me to not include him, and as much as I love Paul, his voice does not compare. Bruce's voice has a might that is insane to me and you have no idea how glad I am for that. His training as an opera singer truly paid off because boy oh BOY does man SING. "The Trooper", "Wasting Love" and "Powerslave".
8. Geoff Tate
Now we have Mr. Geoff Tate of Queensryche! The way I would describe his voice is that it's similar in strength to Rob's. Obviously it doesn't sound the same. Geoff has his sound and Rob has his, but I would argue that the range and strength is very similar. Geoff does have a slightly higher pitched voice than Rob, but overall, he can go into the lower notes when needed. Songs I feel best represent this are "Queen of The Reich", "Is There Anybody Listening", "Night Rider", "Silent Lucidly", and "Another Rainy Night". Truly one of my favorite singers of all time!
9. John McDonald/Midnight
We now have a man that I hold incredibly, and I mean deeply, dear to me. John McDonald, or better known by his stage name, Midnight, is best known for his work with Crimson Glory. And let me tell you, it did not take long for him to become one of my favorite singers. One listen at Crimson Glory's self titled album was all it took for me to fall in love with the strength and ferocity of that voice of his. Seriously though I cannot recommend that album enough it's so good! Their second and third albums are also major bangers in my honest opinion I love his voice so much!
10. Michael Kiske
And last but certainly not least (for this post anyway) is Michi, my personal favorite of Helloween's singers. The dude has one of the best voices I have ever heard and AAAAAAA it's so good. He has such a crazy range and powerful, beautiful voice that is suited to what he does and yet it's almost angelic. "A Tale That Wasn't Right", "I Want Out", "Helloween", and "Future World" are personally some of my favorites because they show just how strong that voice of his is! GAH I love it!
20 questions for fic writers
thank you for tagging me @thatbluelight !! i'm not always an ask games kind of person, but This. this is perfect and i had a lot of fun with it :)
how many works do you have on ao3?
98! getting veeeery close to that big 100 lol
2. what's your total ao3 word count?
486,142 apparently. not quite as many as i thought lol
3. what fandoms do you write for?
twenty one pilots, although i do have an old wtnv crossover in the mix somewhere. i've been thinking about writing for the nbc hannibal fandom, but haven't done it yet
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
bio is #1 by quite a bit <3 followed by odium, which i don't really like as much as i did when i first wrote it. after that is surrounded/hounded, spend some time (forever), and know me. oh god i forgot about that one
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
i try to, especially if they're longer comments, if people ask questions, if people said they liked the work, etc. i really appreciate the feedback and hearing how much people like something i've made motivates me to write more by a million lmao
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
probably home or colder bones
7. what is the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
no one's gonna love you, not just bc everything works out and they get together but bc i was really happy with that ending and with the finished work
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
8. do you get hate on any fics?
not that i've ever noticed
without going into detail, i've written mlm and wlw. i generally try to make it abstract/not use explicit language because i have a Normal Healthy Relationship with sex and i can definitely say the word "cock" without wanting to tunnel into the ground like a gopher. as you can probably tell by this fic
10. do you write crossovers? what's the craziest one you've written?
just the pilots/wtnv crossover one, nothing too crazy (yet)
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
not to my knowledge
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
yes, a few times! i Need to remember to put the translation link in the author's notes and notify people in the tags that there's multiple versions available
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
i've had other people beta for me once or twice, and sometimes i've beta'd for other people, but other than that, no. a proper collab sounds fun though!
14. what's your all time favorite ship?
tyler n josh obviously but doesn't have to be romantic!! i just think they're neat :)
15. what's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
if i listed every wip i've ever wanted to finish here, i'd be here all day lol. off of ao3, i'd love to finish all is cold betwixt; i have the whole thing mapped out, i just never wrote it. off the top of my head, i've got another shapeshifter one that's a bit less angsty than surrounded and a bit more silly. there's another more personal one that involves growing up in a changing climate, but it's never really gotten anywhere and was mostly just a vent fic. but probably the one i'd most like to finish involves love and fire and a terrible, terrible curse (or is it) with a splash of survivor's guilt.
16. what are your writing strengths?
once i get going on a writing session i Will keep going for a while. like if i get in the Writing Mood and sit down and actually do it, i'll get a shit ton of it finished
17. what are your writing weaknesses?
too many commas probably. also lately i've been starting fics without a general idea of the ending or how to get there, which leads me to abandon them or take long ass breaks. i also have trouble actually sitting down and Writing because i get distracted by other things that are less intense and require less focus but are still fun
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
nothing wrong with that, though i've never done it myself. i do appreciate when authors add a translation of the dialogue into english though so i don't have to whip out google translate
19. first fandom you wrote for?
warrior cats. i was 13, didn't have any social media, and i put several chapters to a spiral-bound notebook. not my best moment
20. favorite fic you've written?
no one's gonna love you and home are tied for #1, with surrounded/hounded and spend some time (forever) tied for #2. all my lady pilots stuff is #3; i don't think it's necessarily good but i enjoyed writing it!
tagging a few of my fellow fic writers here! no pressure to do the tag, and if anyone wants me to tag them, i'm happy to
@i-seeaspaceshipinthe-sky @rabler @edyluewho @kiitchensiink
i KNOW there's more but i don't know everyone's tumblr urls since they aren't the same as their names on ao3 lol. if you see this and you want to do this, this is me tagging you <3
Writing Audit ✨
...I ended up signing up for the Salamanders Discord writing comp again. Idk why I did this to myself when I'm trying to finish my summer exchange project, but it's max 1500 words per story so I can probably do it in one night if I have to. The goal is for each competitor to create a short anthology of 4 stories in around 4 weeks. Our wider setting is a sector in the far western regions of Ultima Segmentum which is undergoing Ork and Chaos incursions and eventually gets crusaded by the Imperium. I've chosen a feral jungle world as my focus.
I already have ideas for the first story involving DAOT Archaeotech, feral Orks in limestone karst caves, and a Thousand Sons-affiliated exploratory force made up of non-marine sorcerors seeking out psychoactive plants for a particular Exalted Sorceror back on Sortiarius. (IYKYK) I'm planning for some background necron action too... But very much "blink and you'll miss it" for now.
I'll mainly be going for worldbuilding, focusing on how the planet changed over time. My hope is to bring the Salamanders in later once we hit the Crusade part of the story.
At least I can talk about this comp here, unlike my summer exchange work! Those ones are coming along bit by bit. I'm still a bit worried whether I'll manage to finish them, but since I pivoted to writing two pieces instead of one, it seems much more likely now. I know that sounds weird, but it'll make sense later.
List of my current projects under the Read More.
Summer Exchange Fic 1 - >500 words with no max, MUST be complete by August 11. Currently just over 500, expecting it to end up around 1500 words. Contains smut.
Salamanders Writing Comp - Part 1/4 due on August 8. 1500>[story]>800 words.
Summer Exchange Fic 2 - same rules and recip but expecting it to be around 10k words. Posting as a treat so I can upload unfinished chapters after the fact. Does not contain smut but IMO is the better story.
Salamander Slice of Life/Romance - been looking at this again, finally. I've been linking sections, hard but fun work. Need to add proper chapter divisions though, because certain sections are like 10k+ words long.
[Freelance project I'm considering picking up.] - Good for money, but would slow down all my other writing. Need to decide tonight, will probably start on this after August 15th
Of Steel and Flesh - Next chapter needs a lot of work, as most of them do considering they were written in Jan-Feb. I'd like to upload a chapter in August. It probably won't happen until much later in the month.
Adathan and Julen Sequel - Blood Angel/Imperial Fist Deathwatch smut. I did start writing this but I'm feeling a bit uninspired when it comes to smut at the moment. Need the right mood to hit me.
Techmarine university story - haven't worked in this in ages. Definitely on the back burner until after the exchange deadline, possibly until after the Salamanders comp too.
MMM August fic - this one's going to have to wait a few weeks, I'm absolutely swamped in other stuff.
Noise Marine This Is Spinal Tap parody - Look, it was a great idea, but I don't think I'm going to get this treat done before the exchange. So I'm posting it here. Please steal my idea, there is such a great prompt for it on the exchange.
#wh40k fanfic#40k salamanders#warhammer fanfiction#It isn't even WIP Wednesday but I just had to say something#The Salamanders Discord writing comp has such a cool format#Though super intimidating
I made a Cara account. I'll link it soon. I don't really like having too many social media accounts, but I like how simple and quiet the app is, and I don't relish the decision from Meta to use our images for AI no matter what. You basically can't opt out, either. Still, Instagram is a big one, and there is so much networking to be done there. I really can't pull away from it just yet, but I think Cara is a promising alternative.
I'm also learning the benefits of 3D tools on Clip Studio. However, mine is the little tablet that could, and for certain huge or really intricate models, it slows the app down or closes the app completely. I plan to make use of what I can to ease the process of manga making, but I probably won't be able to use the big models that I was excited about.
Before, I was drawing perspective grids by hand on Ibis Paint and using the radial rulers as a way to snap to vanishing points. I know the concepts of perspective, but when looking at a blank page,it was hard to visualize what was necessary for the scene. In Clip Studio, they have assets you can use that make visualization and placement easier. I first discovered this with a free 3D grid that someone made in the asset store that sets up a grid for you and allows you to move the horizon line and vanishing points wherever you need it. I'm technology handicapped, haha, so the tools Clip Studio came with for that were frustrating me, and this grid made it easier. (Side note: if you don't have Clip Studio, there are free 3D perspective grids online with the same concept.)
Having a whole grid set up made it so much easier to visualize the scenes I was trying to make. This became even more useful when I found out every 3D object already has its own perspective grids built in that you can draw with. So I can insert an object, set up a camera angle that I'm going for, and turn on the grid to help me draw anything else I need for the perspective. I'm really excited about this. I already know I want to trace the objects, but as long as I can get it into the proper perspective, that alone should be a game changer for me.
The thing to remember is that in a scene, not everything exactly goes to the same one or two vanishing points. There can be multiple points, they just all have to be on the same horizon line. I did NOT learn this in art classes. I thought everything HAD to be on the same one or two vanishing points. Nope, some objects can have their own vanishing point altogether. This is only for the first two types of perspective. I dunno what happens when it's three point perspective.
With that in mind, the new 3D tools I'm using have shown to be very helpful. I was strictly a traditional artist, but I drew my manga digitally because it was convenient to not have to erase an underdrawing. But there are so many more tools that make the process easier for me, especially since I don't have assistants. Even without the 3D models, there are still some really cool things CSP can do. My current favorite is the vector pen and eraser, where it'll erase anything up to an intersection! That was incredible news for someone like me who was drawing backgrounds and erasing the extra lines manually, while being super careful not to hit the lines I intended to keep. I don't care how traditional of an artist you are, you cannot deny how convenient that is. Yes, there are tools and brushes that encourage pure laziness, but there are some tools that just GOT IT. The vector pen and eraser is one of them.
My next tool to try is the automation function, which can ease your workflow by executing a list of commands you would usually do over and over. In Ibis paint, I had a file that I set up with my folders and layers named, organized, and ready, with tones set at the perfect opacity I always used. I would then duplicate this file over and over for every page I needed. I assume automation is similar, and I can't wait to use it.
So I hope my future manga pages will come out ever better with the help of these little handicaps of mine, a crutch I allow myself in place of the assistants mangaka normally have. I may use a small grass brush to make my process easier, but why would I draw something over and over that will essentially be overlooked by readers anyway? You prove nothing by doing that and it just adds to anxiety and burnout. You should focus your energy on things that matter and if you need a crutch for it, then so be it.
Guess what, it's pretty simple! Stick to the guys with clear, easily-accessed citations/bibliographies. I've seen video essayists do this in a variety of ways. Here's a few examples:
hbomberguy: Vaccines and Autism: A Measured Response
As this video runs, little numbered boxes appear in the right corner:
If you go down to the video's description, you'll find a link to the sources:
Open it, and you'll find a list of links, each one clearly numbered and titled. The screenshot above has [24] in the corner, let's go look it up:
This method isn't too dissimilar from the way traditional papers cite their sources. I'll be honest, I think he could have done a better job by using one of the citation formats, which give more information (most notably, the creator(s)' name(s)). That said, it's still a good effort. The referenced sources are all marked in the video, the source list is available in the description (where people are likely to find it), and the source list is easily referenced and tells you what each source is.
It is worth also noting the extra attention that Hbomberguy gives Brian Deer, whose research provided the backbone of his video. He repeatedly references Deer throughout the video, recommends him to his viewers at the end, and includes a link to his book about Andrew Wakefield's scam in the description. This isn't necessary, but it's a good sign. Hbomberguy is clearly grateful for Deer's research, and he shows that gratitude by spotlighting him.
Speaking of proper citation, let's look at someone who does use a proper citation format:
Lindsay Ellis: Mel Brooks, the Producers, and the Ethics of Satire about Nazis
Now THAT is what a good bibliography looks like. We have the titles, the creator names, the publisher names, page numbers, and in the case of the online articles, the date accessed. Admittedly, she doesn't put footnotes in the video like Hbomberguy. However, the amount of information her bibliography gives still makes it easy to fact-check her--or to look for copied passages. In addition, she does include on-screen references when directly quoting someone:
Or when showing clips from movies:
Neither of these are perfect, in my opinion, but they both show a distinct effort to make sure people can check their sources. And that effort is a demonstration of genuineness. A plagiarist isn't going to make it easy for other people to find the original source.
Right now citation, verification, etc. for video essays is still a new method. Go back a few years, and you'll find that even trustworthy essayists have sparse bibliographies, if any at all. Since citation in video essays is so new, I don't think we should expect every single video to roll out a pristine, perfectly formatted bibliography. Instead, you should look for the effort:
Easily found source list
Clear labels for each source
Me anytime a video essayist I like posts a new video and wondering if it’s original work or if they plagiarized it
Top Ten Favorite Legend of Zelda Games
Since I'm huge Legend of Zelda fan, I decided to do my personal top ten Legend of Zelda games. I'll even briefly go into why. Some quick rules on this. Some are the same from my last top ten. In fact, most are. If it's basically the same game with a different name, with no real gameplay differences, it'll be considered the same level. I must have at least played the game, though finishing is not required, as I sometimes have trouble finishing games like this due to my playstyle frequently getting me killed. I will do another honorable mentions, and I may even eventually talk about the game that isn't making even the honorable mentions that I've played. No, Zelda 1, 2, and 3 will not be making this list as I've never played them.
10. Oracle of Season/Ages It's basically the same game, but one has time travel. You're saving either Nayru or Din, and defeating the badguy. I think one's supposed to come after the other and the two complement each other some how, but they're still basically the same game. And it's really easy to accidently do something wrong and make the game unplayable without starting over.
9. Minish Cap. There's a reason this game made it this low. Despite it being actually a fun game with a fun concept, there's Ezlo, the cursed mage/person that will be Link's very annoying hat for the whole game. Ezlo is supposed to be your Navi of the game. He's supposed to give helpful hints, but he doesn't. Instead he says the same stuff over and over and over like "go to this area." And you go to the area and all he says is to go to the area. So no real clues on what to do. Ugh.
8. Majora's Mask. So before I get a ton of hate on the placement of this game, it has nothing to do with the graphics. I tend to greatly dislike games with time crunches, so the three day time limit always stressed me out, even though I could rewind whenever I wanted. I was always afraid that I wasn't going to get to where I needed to go and get even one area done in three days.
7. Twilight Princess. This is another good game with lots of good game play, but while I really like it, I like other games more. Actually, I think if not for the occasionally really dark colors, it would be a lot more enjoyable. But it's really dark, even in Hyrule proper.
6. Skyward Sword. So this game, I actually debated putting higher because the story is amazing, the graphics are incredible, the music is wonderful, and the friendship between Link and Zelda is very believable, unlike Minish Cap where Zelda just kinda declares us friends and we just kinda go along with it. Unfortunately, while I tend ot like Fi, I agree she can be extremely annoying. Add to that inconsistent controls, and difficulty aiming, and you can see why the game made it so low.
5. Link Between Worlds. Alright, you could argue that Link to the past also goes here, because it's kinda the same idea, just one Link travels between worlds and the other travels through time. However, while they seem to have a similar idea, I'm not sure I'd agree that they're basically the same game with a different play style. For one thing, there seems to be a new villain intent on releasing Gannon. Though he claims he only seeks beauty. The other world is an alternate reality of Hyrule called Lorule where everything is opposite of Hyrule. Everyone's unpleasant, the hero is a coward and they have no Triforce, so their world is falling apart and losing hope. Ravio is a fun character, and his shop makes it possible to take on the dungeons for the princesses in whatever order you want, though his stuff is super expensive, even to rent. I highly recommend you buy ASAP.
4. Ocarina of Time. This is the first Legend of Zelda game I ever played. And when I was very young (I think 10 or so) I could not get past Goma, the spider boss of the Deku tree. Yeah, seriously. Now, I can beat the game no problem. The updaged graphics in the 3DS version are actually much more appealing, the music is good, and it's just a good game. You feel close to most, if not all the major side characters and truly dislike Gannondorf, like a proper villain.
3. Breath of the Wild. This is the most recent Legend of Zelda game, aside from the Warriors games. The graphics are beautiful, and the world is fun to explore. The main reason it's not higher is the weapons and shields. They all break, and you can only carry so many. Heck, even the Master Sword can break if you use it against what the game classifies as the "wrong enemies" though in the case of the Master Sword breakage isn't permanent, it just needs to recharge then it's back. But it is a bit ridiculous that the most iconic sword of the Legend of Zelda franchise can break. Everything else? Sure, as long as some of the stronger swords take longer.
2. Wind Waker. This game is gorgeous. I mean, for an obviously cell shaded games. The story is really good and sailing the seas is SO much fun. The music is wonderful. It's too bad the final boss is so hard to beat
Now before I reveal the top Legend of Zelda game, here are the honorable mentions. Link to the Past, Phantom Hourglass, and Spirit Tracks.
Link's Awakening. Yes, it's just a dream, but that's the point of the game. And honestly the updated release for the Switch was so much fun. It really played into the dream aspect with the characters looking like toys rather than real people, the edges of the screen being slightly blurry, and it really makes you feel bad for doing what you're doing. I love this game, becasue it really makes you feel the consequenses of your actions. Throughout the game, the enemies are constantly telling you that if you wake the Wind Fish, which is the only way to escape the island, you will destroy the island and kill everyone living there. Monsters will include you, as they seem to believe you are a figment of the Wind Fish's imagination. You have a choice here. Keep playing and destroy everything on this island, including the poeple you met here, or don't and be stuck on the island in a dream. The ending is really heartbreaking too. This is one game where I really don't blame the monsters at all. This is their home, and they know they'll effectively die when the Wind Fish wakes up. No wonder they're all unhappy when you come to wake it up.
Daily Log: 2/18/2023
Paragraphs ahead...
Finally found out about Clip Studio Art's "parallel" drawing ruler, so no more having to duplicate layers and horizontally flip 'em. Speaking of Clip Studio Art, I'm finishing the fourth page of "Puppy Eyes and Doll Eyes" (first page link) in it-- and let's just say, you'll get an idea of why Claire felt so afraid of Sarah and Jimmy. Also, never try to abbreviate "Clip Studio Art" into an acronym, as I tried for the previous sentence, since that spells out "CSA" which also stands for... something else, awkwardly enough. I think I'll just make it: "CS-Art," for short.
Also, I figure I need to be more active on this blog, beyond just posting stuff or commenting on other posts. Personally, I prefer commenting to favoriting because it feels a bit more "weighted," per se, rather than I'm just adding something to my "favorites" without a second thought and possibly forgetting about it in due time. I'm not knocking on those of you who prefer "favoriting" to comments, it's just I prefer a more "engaging" and "vocal" matter of interacting with other posts.
I decided to go back to making posts daily; but I really fear it getting obnoxious if I do it too often, yet how can you build an audience for yourself when you just awkwardly pop in to post stuff and then leave? At the very least, I can try offering interesting tidbits and stuff, and updates on works-in-progress so everyone knows I'm still working on stuff to warrant clogging up your "following" lists.
Also, is anyone else excited for Steam's release of "Digimon World: Next Order" next week? I played the original PS4 version back in my college days, and even broke it out recently in 2021 to 2022. Now, I'll be able to play it on my computer, which should make it easier to get stuff done when I need that occasional break. I still have "Cyber Sleuth," of course, but that's the same thing over and over again, and it's really made tedious by the lack of a dialogue-skipping option.
Please, if I wanted my Digimon game to be more words than gameplay, I'd get "Digimon Survive" (at least that has a "auto-scroll" creative types could work during). A shame about those lengthy dialogue and character interaction sequences, 'cause I DO enjoy digivolving, battling and all that jazz! Also, nothing like having Richiu, my loyal Veemon friend, following me everywhere-- especially when I'm playing "Hacker's Memory," and can give him the proper wolf-based digivolutions! … Actually, maybe I need to go do a little more playing, just to tide me over during this period of wait.
