Season 1 Mike Wheeler Queer-coding

Just some of my favourite pieces of queer-coded Mike evidence that I have found from season 1. Let me know if you have never seen these before because I'd love to add to the conversation <33

My overall conclusion from season 1 is: Mike gets taught that being queer/ not liking girls is dangerous. It means you die/ disappear. Being 'normal' or straight is therefore easier. Take this conclusion in mind as you read this.

(Yes I will be doing all the other seasons at some point but it will take a while because this one took me a WEEK)

1. Ted's Comments

Take these with a grain of salt, because when I watched the show again I was a little unsure of whether these are actually implicitly homophobic or due to other things.

So here Ted says 'see Michael, you see what happens?' after Nancy storms off and goes to her room. This could be in relation to Mike shouting at Nancy earlier and that's why he's scolding him a little, but also Mike was talking about how it isn't Will's fault that he's gone missing. It's also kind of established that adults in the town think that Will is gay (more on that later) and was hatecrimed, so Ted could be referencing that.

It's also notable that Mike thinks his dad is talking about Will's disappearance because he then says 'what happens when what? i'm the only one acting normal here. i'm the only one who cares about will.'

So I think it's pretty clear what he's insinuating here. He didn't want to explicitly say 'see what happens when you're not like everyone else' but you can tell. And why would this be said to Mike in relation to Will's disappearance if not for queer-coding? Even early on in the show, Mike could associate being queer with going missing.

Ted, later on in the season, says 'our son? with a girl?' which tbh i thought could be because he's a nerd and only likes hanging out with his friends.

But now that I'm thinking about it, they also say that kind of stuff about Will in season 3. And people on twitter who were against Will's queer-coding before season 4 figured that a lot of the reason people called him slurs was because of him being shy/ stereotyped/ a nerd/ sensitive. But it was confirmed after season 4 that the slurs were queer-coding aka we were right. So the same could easily be said for Mike in this situation.

2. The 'Talk' tm

We've all seen a lot of people talk about this, but I have a teensy bit more to add onto what others have said already because it's sort of funny.

This scene is different to both Karen and the audience. To Karen, she's basically asking Mike if he's feeling particularly sad about Will being missing because of reasons. But to the audience, and Mike, this is a moment for him to be worried about the fact he's hiding El in his closet.

Karen says: 'with all this that's been going on, with Will, i can't imagine what it's been like for you. i just-- want you to feel like you can talk to me. i never want you to feel like you have to hide anything from me. i'm here for you. okay?'

This feels like something Joyce will say to Will in season 5 LMAO like-

If you aren't queer, you will never understand how obvious this is that it's a gay talk. The word 'hide' is so often used in these situations. What is she insinuating? I understand that the 'i want you to feel like you can talk to me' might just be about Mike's sadness, but the emphasis on 'hide anything' is crazy. Also this is about Will and nothing else because at the beginning she pointedly says, 'with Will'. She's basically insinuating there's something different about Mike's relationship/friendship with Will.

What she could also be insinuating is that she thinks that Will's disappearance had something to do with him being queer, (which is rumoured about). She then applies this same logic to Mike. She may be thinking 'oh if Will didn't feel safe about being queer, I'd better let Mike know he is safe.' -- This could be far-fetched though.

Okay so what is very interesting is that El's in Mike's closet at this time. There are multiple reasons for the directors to put her in there: One, to show a flashback from when she's in the lab, and Two, for her to be in the closet during the queer-coded conversation.

Here's why: RIGHT AFTER KAREN SAYS ALL THE HIDING STUFF, THERE'S A SOUND FROM MIKE'S CLOSET......

Walk with me here folks... To the audience, this is funny because Mike is hiding something. He's hiding El. But. Also the sound came from his closet. He's hiding the fact he's in the closet-- *gunshots*. Double meanings exist i swearr

3. Lucas's Teasing

This whole scene is so interesting to me. I used to ignore it because it's possible Mike and El proof but...

It reinforces the heteronormativity of Mike and could even feed into how he acts in his relationship with her. First of all, Lucas tells Mike that just because he is being nice to a girl he must want to marry her and love her right?

This could be a 'Mike could like El' scene, but no. Mike is literally like, 'Lucas what are you talking about?' HE IS CONFUSED. He's also fed-up, he's not embarrassed. He's not flustered. He's not like 'omg shut up hahaha' he literally bluntly says 'shut up Lucas' in this voice that sounds kind of tired.

What Mike learns here is that being with a girl is kind of expected. He's not allowed to be friends with a girl or care for a girl without people assuming they're a thing.

This leads perfectly onto the next point.....

4. Bullies' Homophobic Comments Exhibit A

Straight after learning that Lucas assumed he had heterosexual feelings for El, Mike learns that being gay is a 'bad thing'.

These comments could just be coding for Will, sure, but there are indications that it could be Mike queer-coding as well.

First of all, 'He's dead, that's what my dad says. Probably killed by some other queer', is a very weighted comment. The fact that Troy's dad said this to him implies that Will's sexuality is like a rumour amongst adults in the town. It's also the show portraying how hate like homophobia can be taught from parents.

Mike's then the one to be like 'just ignore them' and goes to walk away. SPECIFICALLY IT IS HIM THAT IS TRIPPED. I REPEAT!!! HE IS TRIPPED NO ONE ELSE.

This could imply that the bullies were targeting him as well as Will for homophobic bullying, maybe in the past as well, and the 'killed by some other queer' comment could be directed at him. I guess you could say that he was tripped because he was the nearest person, or that he was the one speaking, but the directors chose him to be the one walking there. And SPEAKING. Why??

So: Mike has just learnt from Lucas that being nice to a girl can be seen as attraction and means he has to love her. THEN Mike has just learnt from the bullies that maybe Will died because he was gay, and that being gay gets you hurt (tripped over).

Mike is given a choice between the lesser of two evils: choose to fit into a heteronormative society but get made fun of Lucas, or embrace being gay and get killed/ bullied like Will.

Later on in the season, he finds out Will has died. Let me repeat that. He. Believes. Will. Has. Died. Would this maybe reinforce what the bullies said? That being gay = disappearance. Oh poor MIKE OMGGG

Queer coding all up in this scene lads. (+ a reason for internalised homophobia uwu)

5. Bullies' Homophobic Comments Exhibit B

This scene and the previous scene are inherently linked.

Mike is the one to confront the bullies about Will, defending him, so the bullies instantly resort to homophobia. This means that they may be implying that Mike trying to defend someone who they view as gay is also gay.

In the last scene, I guess you could say that the comments weren't particularly targeted at Mike as well as Will because he wasn't at the forefront of the group (even though he was tripped over). But in this scene he definitely is. They chose to utilise homophobic language about Will because they know it touches a nerve with Mike: This homophobic language doesn't just affect the person they are talking about but also the person they are saying it to.

So here's what they say: 'Besides, what's there to be sad about anyway? Will's in fairyland now, right? Flying around with all the other little fairies, all happy and gay.'

The words that Troy is saying here are obviously more linked to how Will is queer-coded throughout season 1, but the way that the scene is shot, the music, the implications, they're all coding for Mike.

'Will's in fairyland now, right?' is posed as a question. They didn't have to make it a question, but they did. This is basically them saying 'oh we've told you this before, shouldn't you know?'/ implying that Mike would know because he's also gay.

Another line they didn't have to include unless it was queer-coding for Mike is: 'Flying around with all the other little fairies.' They could have just written Troy to say 'Will's in fairyland now. All happy and gay,' or something along those lines etc. The jab at Mike is that other gay people exist, and that Will is being gay 'with them'. The words 'all happy and gay' here doesn't actually imply Will's sexuality by itself, but the act of 'being gay together' or in a gay relationship so to speak.

So if you put the pieces together, they're making a point about Mike and Will's friendship in a sense. Also the fact that Troy at the beginning of this insult says 'What's there to be sad about anyway?', basically means that he's trying to get under Mike's skin by saying 'Why are you sad that Will's happy and being gay with other boys? Are you sad he's not with you?' I know that's like, on the nose, but whatever.

(Also Mike has tears in his eyes during this part showing how the words are also affecting him and not just Will)

Another thing I want to talk about is the music. Obviously this music is foreboding and is trying very hard to make the audience uncomfortable, trying to let you know that something bad is going to happen. When Troy walks away, the music swells and the camera zooms in on Mike's angry expression.

Then, Mike pushes troy over for the homophobic comment. This is interesting why? Because Troy tripped Mike over in the previous scene I talked about. Meaning: the scenes are linked. Troy was being homophobic to both Mike and Will. Mike's had enough, so he retaliates in the same way that Troy had treated him earlier.

I'd also like to add that before El saves Mike, he just stands there as Troy stands up and says 'You're dead Wheeler, you're dead.' He was ready to take whatever Troy was going to throw at him. Which is interesting because in the previous scene I talked about, Troy spoke about how being 'queer' means you'll get killed. ('He's dead. That's what my dad thinks, probably killed by some other queer.') So Troy is going to kill Mike, just like how Will is dead too.

A lot has happened between the previous scene and this one. Mike thought Will had died. Yes, during the assembly scene, he doesn't believe it anymore, but he watched Will's body being dragged out the water just recently. Just like in the scene where he jumps into the quarry, this is yet another instance of Mike not caring if he gets hurt in regards to bullying/ Will.

6. More Lucas Comments

"Screw you Mike! You're blind, blind because you like that a girl's not grossed out by you! But wake up, man. Wake the hell up!" (btw I'm not saying that Lucas is being homophobic here, they're little kids and they've been through a lot)

I mean, come on. This basically implies the classic compulsive heterosexuality concept of Mike choosing which girl to have a crush on because she's the easiest option, since she didn't know him growing up or didn't go to the same school together. Even if this isn't accurate, it is still coding because they wrote Lucas to say that jab at him, it hurts Mike inside, because he knows deep down it's at least a little true.

He looks saddened by this, not angry. Mike usually gets annoyed much quicker than this and whenever he's insulted he looks shocked or has a scowl on his face, but here he just looks... sad. Because he knows that Lucas is touching a nerve. (The top pic btw)

He's completely silent. Until, of course, Lucas starts talking about Will:

'She knows where Will is. And now, she's just letting him die in the Upside Down.'

'Shut up!' -- Mike suddenly shouts either because a) he doesn't like that Lucas is insulting El or something OR b) he hates that Lucas is implying that it is his fault that Will is dying in the upside down because he's being blinded by the fact El isn't grossed out by him.

I think it's B tbh <3 (this scene isn't toooo important for my overall conclusion but it's a little nugget of info i guess)

7. Mike Jumps Into the Quarry

Let's be honest here, before this scene, almost everything seems hopeless for Mike finding Will. Firstly, he physically saw Will's 'body' being dragged out of the same water that he's about to jump into. Then he found out he was still alive but somewhere extremely dangerous and he could be dying there for all he knew. Then his one hope at finding Will (Eleven) is gone and he can't find her ("She's a weapon!... We're no use to Will if we're dead!") and Lucas won't agree to help him find her.

This scene was foreshadowed earlier on, making it a very important scene anyways -- Hopper said that no one would survive the jump and the water 'turns into cement, hits you like a tonne of bricks'. Mike would have died if El didn't save him. And he seemed okay with it.

The camera focuses in on him, and if you listen closely, you can hear his heartbeat. You could say that he's only really doing this to save his friend, but like, why is he so willing and why did they so pointedly zoom in on him?

Here's where we get a little serious: Mike would have committed suicide if El wasn't there at the last second. He would have died in the same place where Will's body was discovered.

Quotes about how being gay gets you killed:

'See Michael? You see what happens?' --Meaning: What happens when you're gay? You disappear.

'He's dead, that's what my dad says. Probably killed by some other queer' -- Meaning: Being gay gets you killed/ means you should die.

'Besides, what's there to be sad about anyway? Will's in fairyland now, right? Flying around with all the other little fairies, all happy and gay.' -- Meaning: Will's dead along with all the other gay people, that's where they should be etc.

'You're dead Wheeler, you're dead.' -- Meaning: Mike you should die too, because you're just like Will, and you should join him in 'fairyland'.

(from this scene) 'Jump [into the Quarry].' -- Meaning: Mike you should die just like I told you earlier and in the same place that Will died. (Honestly I believe the whole town now think that Will is dead and his body was found in the quarry, so Troy would know too and use it against Mike.)

Then, after Mike survives this queer-coded death (which can be paralleled to Will's hypothetical death because it's in the same place), he says to the girl that he cares about and has been presumed to 'like' by his friends: 'You saved me. You saved me.'

(just wanna note that i think that is a very sweet scene and doesn't just have to be all about Mike's queer-coding. it's a bond between the party as friends because Dustin also hugs El. But still.)

You tell me what this scene means then.

8. Mike wasn't Lying (Theory)

Okay so this is more of just a theory than queer-coding, because there is something about this scene that I just find... weird.

I personally think that this scene with both Nancy and Mike talking about their so-called 'crushes' is meant to be so you can see the difference between someone who is lying and someone who is telling the truth. Their reactions to the questions are very different to each other (although it could just be a difference in their characters).

Mike: 'Do you like Jonathan now?'

Nancy: 'What?' *looks to the side, fighting a smile* 'No... no, it's not- It's not like that.' -- She's clearly lying because she's being vague, looking to the side, stuttering over her words etc. However, Mike nods like he believes her. This is key for later.

Nancy: 'Do you like Eleven?'

Mike: 'What? No. Ew. Gross.' *looks her up and down in disgust* -- Telling the truth because he stares at Nancy, doesn't stutter over his words and is very direct.

The fact that these reactions are so different (and we know that Nancy likes Jonathan lets be real) is purposeful in my opinion. It shows that at this point, Mike doesn't like insinuation that he likes her in that way.

Something else that happens later in the episode is also quite interesting to me, which further points to Mike 'telling the truth', which is that Mike thought his and Nancy's conversation was mutually truthful.

Why? Because he was completely confused when Lucas says that her and Jonathan are romantically involved later:

Mike: 'They're gone. Nancy and Jonathan. His car's gone.'

Lucas: 'They're probably just sucking face somewhere.'

Mike: 'What? No. No way.' -- Clearly showing that maybe he thought that Nancy was being truthful, meaning he thought their exchange was mutually truthful.

This seems a bit far-fetched but... something to think about.

Btw, I was going to talk about how the First Kiss between Mike and El is queer-coded, but tbh, it's more like... weird. Because they're 12/11 years old and El literally has no idea what a kiss is and they have this exchange about being brother and sister (ew). Then Mike kind of says 'oh i want to go to the snow ball with you, but not if you're my sister', just gives me vibe that he's just doing what he thinks is normal as a result of what others say. But that's it, not much else to say abt it really (also im tired of writing this post ive been doing it for so long <3)

In conclusion: Mike gets taught that being queer/ not liking girls is dangerous. It means you die/ disappear. Being 'normal' or straight is therefore easier. He internalises this for a while poor child <3

Undeniable urge to draw my fan Princesses smh (The Villain, The Captive)

Also thinking of changing Captive to Guilty? The Guilty works.. might be paired with Cheated (succeeded in freeing the Princess but gets killed anyway)? Still not sure which Voice to pair with Villainess tbh.

(Rambling ahead vv)

Chapter II : The Villain

Kind of inspired by those Revenge plot Villainess female leads. Very attractive, yes./lh

Get her by trying to free the (Sinister) Princess in chapter I. She's not very discreet about wanting revenge (on the people who locked her up) in chapter I and emphasizes on it in chapter II.

You find her tangled up in chains. If you didn't bring the blade, she asks you, her darling assistant, to help her out.

1. If you do help her detangle herself, she breaks the little chain fairly easily (and a few bones maybe. But she doesn't seem to mind.)

2. If you don't and try to leave she'll get angry and trap you with her. "If I have to stay here for another second, I'm keeping you with me" You could ask her to let you go and she'll reply with "Oh, don't think I'd trust you to not just leave me here again." It'll probably play out similarly like the non-headless Prisoner vessel? I'm still not sure about that one.

If you did bring the blade she'll be a little more on guard but still have her playful-ish personality. "Are you here to free me? So thoughtful of you to bring that little knife with you, but we won't need it." You could just detangle her like the bladeless variant

If you try to fight her, she'll retaliate. She uses the chains to her advantage like the Prisoner but she's a lot less hesitant to kill you.

3. If you kill her, you'll get to a shared chapter III with The Guilty. It'll be kind of like the Grey where you don't have much choice, but I'm still thinking about how it'll go. Maybe something with the theme of execution.

4. If you give up and die, you'll get to her "evolved" chapter III with themes of being "trapped" or stripped of choice (like Cage and HEA). Also not sure how this'll go yet!

Chapter II : The Guilty

Somewhat Inspired by any Woe Is Me character..

Get her by trying to free the (Somber) Princess in chapter I. She's not very motivated in doing much of anything but she still wants to live and escape the cabin. After she kills you and the cabin doesn't let her leave, she's completely distraught. Believes that she can't leave no matter how hard she tries, at least not without you.

You find her with a shackle around her neck like the Prisoner, but it's incredibly rusted and loose. You could free her just by pulling it over her head.

1. If you do free her by pulling off the shackles, she'll thank you and self deprecate a little, maybe even hesitating to leave. You could assure her and she'll believe you and finally move on

2. If you don't assure her, she might spiral. "What if my leaving actually hurts everyone?" And for funny reasons she'll start questioning everything (why does that remind me of Skeptic.) and jab at real life issues maybe. As she gets more distressed, her art style gets either more and more realistic or abstract until she is taken away by the Shifting Mound.

3. You could kill her after assuring her that she could be free, and get the shared chapter II with The Villain. She'll feel betrayed but think it was inevitable.

If you kill her before the freeing-part, you'll also end up with the shared chapter II but she might say different things/be less hostile, but it still ends the same.

For Guilty, I haven't decided on how to get her to the "lack of choice"/ her "evolved" chapter III.

I love that these two have clearly known and hated each other for centuries - sometimes you just see an enemy and immediately go, oh it's you motherfucker. and I think that's beautiful. (dear lord that store is so pink)

and once again: hilarious dialogue, heavy and dark undertones. jen has very, very legitimate reasons to hate and mistrust agatha, even more than she realizes. she will never open up to agatha like the others, and that's both fair and sexy of her. tbh she was too kind all things considered, that bitch deserved her ass kicked from here to the afterlife

case in point, agatha knows jen well enough to manipulate her into joining them. and jen knows agatha well enough to say what will hurt her. she picked the worst thing she could come up with

billy and the audience don't notice that agatha has just been stabbed in the heart

partners in crime, once again! agatha is so proud of her boy's lil manipulative side. and yep, billy is not as naive as he tries to appear. he's still a bit clueless, but he tries.

love how they're so deliberate in depicting the witches as a legit community with its own culture and history.

watch this scene again. now think about the rage and soul and desperation jen pours into winning her powers back from agatha. look at the way these two are being both so casual and so callous about jen's deep, bleeding trauma. not so funny a scene anymore, is it?

agatha shoving a fistful of paper in her mouth so she doesn't have to say rio's name also goes in the top five funniest list. she'll never beat the toddler allegations

and now she's gobbling a corn dog! see what I have to deal with here?? how can I keep it classy?

what's really iconic is bringing your gay son to hot topic

alice always looks a little hunched down, as if she had, idk, a giant disgusting harpy sitting on her shoulders. the more I think about it the sadder it gets

oooh, those are dorothy pigtails. i get it now.

you know, I said yesterday that agatha successfully cons jen and alice, but that's not true. she couldn't have swayed jen without billy's help, and she had alice completely wrong. she thought alice was looking for her mom, but Lorna didn't die on the Road and alice always knew it was a con - she's actually the world's biggest Road expert after agatha herself. seems like Agatha is pretty desperate and out of her depth without her mind reading powers. (wait, do we think billy is the one doing the mind reading, is that why he got to jen so easily?)

seeing her being so cruel with people's deep seated traumas is really upsetting me. especially considering how she guards her own trauma. feeling guilty afterwards is no justification, she knows exactly what she's doing.

these two need their own show. oh wait, they already have it.

but agatha saying "we don't need her" and then pushing people around in the mall - she is upset about what she just did to alice. and she's almost relieved she said no, that she gets to spare her. sweet, sad alice, so spiky on the outside, soft as a marshmallow on the inside. she did not deserve any of this. her death is entirely on agatha.

sighing and looking wistfully out of the window, she's in pain but determined to go on

meanwhile detective agnes is working hard to figure billy out, you can practically see the gears turning inside her head. I think at this point she already kind of knew, tbh. "I have a theory, but I need more."

Just in general, it's pretty much a given that someone (or someones) will die in OS, especially since we didn't really lose anyone in IF. And it's inevitably going to hurt, which means it will be someone close to Xaden and Violet. It won't be Sawyer because he just lost a leg. It's not Jesinia for obvious reasons. Personally I'd narrow it down to Bodhi, Rhiannon, or Garrick, but Rebecca LOVES Garrick. Loves that man. So Bodhi or Rhiannon. Amy convinced me that Bodhi makes more sense, in that someone is likely to kill him thinking he's Xaden. Her whole theory is linked here!

TADC - Episode 4: Short thoughts about Jax, Zooble and Ragatha + some goofy shit (SPOILERS AHEAD, HOES!)

Apart from giving us a well-needed glimpse into Gangle's mind and past, we got to see how our scrimblos deal with the silent insanity of normality in a fast-food chain environment. Not as the clients, but the workers, of course. Firstly, we get to see a defeated Jax, conforming to the situation around him because it's all he can do, especially after being stuck glued to a screen. He was, for once, truly stripped of all control, and thus unable to get a kick out of the whole thing. Though perhaps not in a more humiliating way than when Ragatha tied him up. Not a whole deconstruction of his psyche just yet, but definitely a look into another side of his. It felt nearly personal, if you ask me... Was he also a fast food employee before, much like Zooble? Kinda fits tbh! And Zooble getting to be themselves again. God I've been yearning for more of her and we've REALLY been getting it lately. Zooble is shaping up to be the straightman (har har) of the gang, and possibly the most stable despite his internal, dysphoric struggles, and I'm VERY interested in seeing more of that dynamic, seeing as how so far, she's the most emotionally mature out of everyone, even more so than Pomni or Kinger who I'd argue are quite mature on their own. One dynamic I'd love to see is the one between Zooble and Ragatha, for reasons I'll get to right now. Ragatha seemed like she was about to be the joke character here at first and well, yeah, she delivers the laughs, but she also lets slip what she truly thinks when put into a vulnerable state of mind. That she wants to be loved, desperately so, but that she may not truly love everyone as we imagined. And before most get their pitchforks aimed at her, I just wanna say, most of us are like this. We can't and won't love everyone, but I reckon a lot of people are in fact, just trying to get by without much trouble and maybe even helping others along the way regardless of any petty issues we may have. That's Ragatha. But this isn't just a woman going through life, it's a woman trapped in a seemingly endless digital purgatory with a limited amount of people who may or may not dip into a state of unrecognizability due to an insane mental state. Is it really the best idea to keep things bottled up? I gotta see Zooble and Rags having a real ass, adult heart-to-heart.

Oh and the ships have truly sailed and sunk with this one huh. Gummigoo got re-used as an NPC and swiftly killed all hope of Pomni ever getting to truly be his friend ever. Or lover, too, if you like this couple. Some would say she was fawning over him but to me it seems more like she was just in pure awe that the being she came to care for so much and saw DIE, is suddenly back, very much so alive. All that for nothing, though, because he can't remember a thing. And Ragatha...? Ragatha's jealous. RAGATHA IS JEALOUS. Reminder that what happened to her was basically getting drunk. When drunk, most people lose their filter and speak a lot more loosely about what they think, so, perhaps Pomni's wishes of being by Gummigoo's side instead of Ragatha's when the doll looks out for her so much is more bothersome than we think. I get it though. I get you girl.

Track 3: a biographical story of a real person, a life that happened vs a life (and a love) that never happened

Track 4: meeting an ex-lover and either walking out or letting the moment take you and rekindle the flame even if it's just for a weekend

Track 5: walking out of a loveless relationship vs staying in one. There's also something to say about how the speaker in my tears richochet is so much more active. "When I'd fight you used to tell me I was brave" or "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" vs "I sit and watch you"

Track 6: this is a little hard for me tbh. Could be about killing parts of yourself to change and please others vs killing someone for your own desires ('cause Este's husband didn't really need to die it was just revenge).

Track 7: childhood love that lasted forever even if the two are no longer in contact vs adult love that didn't last. "Hit my peak at seven" vs "it's the price I pay for seven years in heaven. Accepting change vs struggling to accept change

Track 8: a love that was never yours vs a love that used to be yours. "You were never mine" vs "you know, you'll always know me"

Track 9: trying to fix your mistakes vs regretting not fixing your mistakes soon enough

Archangel no more? 🙄

Warren Worthington the third, OG X-Man, was altered by Apocalypse a loooong time ago. Angel became Archangel and for the most part it was a burden, often inscrutable to make sense of, and disappeared once under extreme circumstances. From House of X to Fall of X Archangel was a transformation that he had under control and he used it sparingly to increase his combat efficiency.

He did die at Gambit's hand in Dark X-Men, but like everyone else (except Havok and Magneto) he was resurrected by the Five/Four.

Then X-factor #1 came out and he definitively said he 'can't turn into Archangel anymore.' Also, Frenzy is cool as hell and has been reformed for a decade. I've read every title, including the infinity comics and this is simply not explained.

Here he is in Heir of Apocalypse #1, a From The Ashes mini, turning into Archangel (it's so bad. I don't recommend you read it. Just check out the winner and how ridiculous they look on the wiki.)

Here he is in Heir of Apocalypse #4, still Archangel. It's the last page he appears on and there was zero mention of Apocalypse undoing his transformation or anything else.

What's up with that? First of all X-factor sucks so much - it's sexist, regressive, unambitious and worst of all, boring. It took time to reference why Havok isn't a zombie anymore, but there's nothing like that for Warren. He's been in a coma for 3 issues so there's been no new information. Under a better creative team I'd expect clues or even a slick explanation, but it's pretty obvious this was at best a mistake by the writer, missed by the editor. At worst, it's an example of From The Ashes lack of care for details, continuity and character work.

I have to ask myself 'if the creative team doesn't care about the characters, why should I?' Why should anyone? Either Angel is a bad joke or inconsistent and neither is positive. Sadly, he doesn't even get the worst treatment in X-factor - Polaris is unrecognisable. Gerry Duggan kept her pretty flat in X-Men and Fall of the House of X, but it was at least Lorna Dane. She's worth her own post, though I'll wait until she shows up again, probably tied to railroad tracks with an ACME bomb fuse lit next to her.

From The Ashes is a misnomer IMO - it's just ashes. I hope DOOM wins when that kicks off tbh.

Hi genuine question! I've seen some MelissaHat hate on your blog and was wondering how you feel about her dynamic to Shauna and then becoming a survivor in correlation to the shows core story because it's something I've been debating and don't see anyone else doing so.

While watching yj I've found myself looking at it with the lens of "what is the core story they're telling vs the fringe imagery?" We know this show has taken many many turns in its plot from the shows pitch to post pilot and now, for example van being the first to die, then to the first survivor to die, then to how she is now etc etc. If somone told me that the show was written as it was primarily planned to be with no regard to fandom reaction or input I'd say they're lying because it's pretty clear that the creators absolutely have changed some things up from their initial ideas as time goes on and seeing how the audience reacts. ( and that's not a bad thing! If they didn't make changes once they saw Livs amazing chemistry and scene presence then we wouldn't have our groovy butch jester )

But I've always read the show as the jackieshauna show, that's the main story line and core of it all. Shauna and jackie, Shauna is our main girl but only because jackie is our main girl etc etc, everything else while just as important and fun can be tossed and tumbled and scrapped for the betterment of the jackieshauna of it all. Our main 4 are Misty Nat Tai Shauna but their stories fall to the wayside in the face of jackieshauna. I feel like they've always had a set plan for them and what we are seeing as some odd choices are all due because those choices are in regards to the 2nd storylines ( Taivan, lotties story. Tais family doesnt impact the main storyline of jackieshauna so it gets less thought out and instead we get Jeff bingo )

So anytime I feel like the show is off I chalk it up to " yea they've got their main storyline and everything else is whatever vibes the smoke shesh the writing room had that day"

That brings me to Melissa, her role as jackies mirage and an important note in shaunas sexuality would make me think that this was always planned, that she's apart of the main story line and was from the beginning. But then we hear that they wrote up a new role entirely for Swank to play? And for such an important character to have like no lines till the season they apparently make her important for the adult timeline actress? It feels odd I can't figure out if she was just weirdly handled but was always intended to be a thing or if it really was just them needing a role for Swank.

( still feeling slighted if it turns out that they really did kill Simone off to payroll swank lol )

yeah, so i have a hard time talking about this tbh because i feel the room tend to shut down when i do & that's never a good feeling, especially since it's something that's making me feel uncomfortable with the show about? but i'll tag this & put a read more so the people who don't wanna see it can happily ignore me lol.

first thing, i just want to say that i don't hate melissa (in the teen timeline, idk about adult timeline yet but looking bad). she is kind of a loser but that's like her whole character. i do actually enjoy her dynamic with gen & have been playing with that some.

so, my thought is that i actually don't think the writers intended for shaunajackie to be the principle sapphic ship of the show. i know the show is about shauna generally & she's the main character bc for whatever reason the writers are quite invested in exploring the savagery that could conceivably exist within a white soccer mom. that's fine, you know, go off. but yeah, i am really not sure it was supposed to be sapphic, i think that's more to do with sophie and ella's gay ass chemistry lol.

i don't think the writers banked on the fans sidelining taivan and imminently shipping shaunajackie. like i am just convinced that taivan was supposed to be the solo queer ship with ben as an additional character (how most shows have this kind of quota where rep is restrained) & then when the show got massive attention and a huge queer following, they were like "oh?"

the reason i don't think shauna was always meant to be queer is a couple things but one example is that they could have easily introduced melissa from the beginning and even put her in the position of adam. tbh that writing would have been so much more fluid. if they were already considering adam/javi, then wouldn't it make much more sense to use melissa for that role? honestly, if they had done that, the writing would have ate!!

also wouldn't it make sense for tai to bring it up when shauna and her are reflecting on relationships? like sorry if you were fucking a girl in the woods and your lesbian friend was listening to you talk about your failing marriage, no way she isn't gonna suggest maybe your ass is gay.

so all of that. what becomes frustrating for me on this is that i feel like the writers saw the popularity of shaunajackie & decided to cash in on white sapphics for season 3. regardless of whether they meant to do this, they did. i tend to agree with everyone who is suggesting that mari could have been shauna's love interest to much more interesting effect while giving the role to someone who has already been with the show instead of (ostensibly) relegating her to being yet another dead poc character.

there is an interview with liv and jasmin where they are clearly joking but they say something like "i thought we were the gay ones." maybe it's not that serious but it breaks my heart a bit. like i just don't think the fandom gave them their flowers likely because of embedded racism or an insidious preference for white fems.

anyways, it's not that these ships have to be in competition with each other EXCEPT when fuckshit like what happened with lottie happens. it truly feels like the writers didn't know what to do with her & cast her aside so that they could have a melissa/shauna unhinged fuck fest in the adult timeline. like whatever if they want to do that, but it just feels like it was at the expense of the most interesting character in the show--a character people really resonated with both in terms of mental health & in terms of representation. we NEVER see representation like lottie in television, like i could seriously gaf about melanie kissing a girl in the adult timeline. it's just such a disappointment.

the last episode was particularly ridiculous to me. like wdym the police don't investigate a suicide without a body? wdym melissa sent her the DAT tape and thought nothing would happen? like JFC what was that writing??? like you could never convince me this was an endgame since the beginning.

and invariably, you have to ask yourself who are the writers catering to when they write stuff like this? it's not their mixed race and poc viewership who saw the value in a character like lottie. it is certainly not the sapphics in interracial relationships who are prolly gonna have to watch van die so that shaunahat can move forward as the primary sapphic ship in s4. like again, these things shouldn't be in competition but the writers are making them so by disposing of incredible dynamics and characters.

this is just my take, but it's a general frustration i have had with the show going forward. it doesn't mean i'll stop watching or stop having fun with the characters i enjoy, but generally, i am a lil meh about how unwilling people are to talk about this. i think it's the case where if you don't feel impacted bc this is the rep you want & you don't feel the same lack as other people, then you're just less likely to care.

so because i rewatched s3/4 recently, when Hen is struggling with having to give Nia back to her mother, she says "we were supposed to have her for 2 months it's been a year" so i think it's not that they weren't told that Nia would go back to her biological mother, but they got attached to her (obviously 🥺) and maybe because she stayed with them for so long they assumed her mother wouldn't want her back or couldn't have her back? tbh it's still a bit.. that whole thing with Hen Refusing to give the child back. and picking a fight with Karen about it. always annoys me. it's the Angst and Drama show tho, so it's like of course there's gonna be Angst and Drama lmao

for one thing, yeah the bond she'd formed with nia made her irrational and angry when the time came to give her back, especially after she and karen had built themselves up with the expectation that they'd become a permanent placement for nia (although im not entirely sure where they got that idea from, beside the length of time they'd had her; the foster agency in 911verse is a nightmare at communication, evidently).

i think the extent of her frustrations can also be explained by hen's issues with loyalty. she's loyal to a fault. sorry im gonna use this ask as an excuse for meta posting:

eva. she didnt get closure when eva was arrested. so even after building a life with karen, hen still felt indebted to her ("i feel like i owe it to her," she says, ostensibly because eva "didn't fight us when we wanted to adopt denny" [ignoring the canon discrepancy regarding the circumstances of denny's adoption] but there's a deeper commitment there to eva). she wants to see the best in eva, and after having committed herself to helping eva for so long, i think that explains why she was still loyal to eva--one of the factors that contributed to her cheating.

chim. "You get to forgive and move on--I get to hold a grudge until I die." so we're all aware of how loyal hen is to chim, but it's important to note when that loyalty got in the way of their relationship. toward the end of s6, hen's frustration with maddie and doubts about chim's proposal was, imo, a little forced on the writers (in being shoehorned conflict) but not baseless. her loyalty is to chim first and foremost, and that loyalty twisted into an unfounded frustration with maddie for perceived "wrongs"--especially as hen was watching chim squirm over the issue of proposing himself.

s7 drunk driver. hen was angry with the rest of the team when they didn't lay down their unconditional trust in her judgement of the drunk driver. logically, hen might recognize that as professionals, it's right for them to have (1) a healthy amount of skepticism and (2) base their judgement on what they have seen for themselves. they hadn't seen and smelled what hen had, but understood that emotions were running high, and thus approached hen's situation with sympathy and measured trust in her assessment. but hen is upset regardless. she says, feeling that they dont have her back, "if the roles were reversed, I'd find a way to have your backs, and I wouldn't have to lie to do it." she's projecting her sense of loyalty onto the team, frustrated that they're not as apparently unconditionally devoted.

so. nia. hen developed an unconditional love for nia in that time that, naturally, translated to undying loyalty. but as demonstrated, her degree of loyalty can translate into misguided skepticism--and harm, at worst.

and hen's listening to nia "damn near crying her eyes out" over it all. nia's cries are haunting her. she's misguided trying to fight the source of nia's pain (and her own pain). she's seeing this whole situation as a threat to nia's well-being and identifying points of harm where there aren't necessarily any.

she's gravely concerned over what nia's mother did to lose custody in the first place, mistrustful of the positive judgement that deidra's giving them, mistrustful of the agency's assurances that nia will be cared for, and wanting to see the proof for herself that evangeline can care for nia.

it's only after seeing evangeline for herself, with assurances from karen on her capacity to care for nia, that hen can let go of her frustrations with evangeline, deidra, and karen. (just like how after talking to maddie she let go of her hesitancy around chim proposing. just like how seeing the team show up for her with the cruise ship disaster let her stop questioning their loyalty)

i'm not personally annoyed or frustrated with hen in the nia situation. i can't imagine never knowing the fate of your once-daughter and i'm not surprised hen wants to see the proof for herself. i think her desire to fight for nia was an expression of grief more than anything. her loyalty, maternity, and grief are all activated as opposed to the logic we usually see hen depend on.

it's like the call where hen continued cpr on a mother for 12 minutes. her devotion inhibits her from letting go. which was a lucky thing for that mother, but it's not always such a blessing for the people in hen's life.

now that i have tried the remaining 4 pc98 touhous... (and not finished all of them, i was on a sort of a time limit, showing them to my friends on stream... being able to set your starting lives to a higher number is Great for just showing the games really) here's just a few thoughts and nothing special

well about 2 i'm not sure i have much to say as in the 3 hours of the stream i forgot a lot of it already, but i can say i didn't expect the jump from 1 to 2 to be so sudden, it's "this is Not regular touhou but i can see some elements of it" to "oh yeah it's definitely early touhou"

i didn't beat this one, i didn't want to go through the whole 1cc thing for the true ending, that would've taken more time than i wanted to spend on this one. pog for marisa tho, but please don't slap me with your balls :'(

touhou3 hurts my Fucking hand i don't think i'll play this one again. i did beat it and got the final boss on the first try too but i'm pretty damn sure it was bc i got really lucky. i do not have the skill for such things and this sort of 2-player touhous confuses the heck out of me anyway, just as touhou19 did when my friend streamed it

there's touhou4 which i Technically beat but it's got that baffling game design choice of "oh you're on easy mode well Fuck You you don't get the final stage" so, not really... however, with this one, i'm determined to practice and try again some other day just to see the final stage. that's for another stream. apart from that, i didn't expect eepy yuuka. kind of cute.

touhou5: *points at the final boss* it's devil's recitation baybee. just like in touhou12, that also killed the fuck out of me. also yuuka's... silly. :3 i did a run with her first where i died to the thing i just mentioned,,, and because of my Noobishness (and probably severe penalties from taking the extra lives and easy mode) the game did tell me to straight up Die which, cold, jesus-- so i tried again with reimu (mostly for the story tbh since yuuka doesn't really say much about it, just running around to beat ppl up) and beat that one Just Fuckin Barely... at least that time it didn't tell me to die. i wasn't much better but, uh hey i'll Take it

now there was something weird going on with some of the games where either they just had different controls or something was messed up with my controller keybinds, leading me to waste all of my bombs without realizing it until way later in the game in touhou3 bc i pressed the wrong button (not that i would have used them anyway, that is something i forget quite a lot), happened again in touhou5 where i at least realized it very quickly.

also since none of these games have any sort of focus mode, i get a bit worried that playing them too much would cause the habit of not using it in the games that do have it... EDIT I'VE BEEN INFORMED I JUST HAD SOME SORT OF OTHER ISSUE AND FOCUS MODE IS IN FACT A THING. WISH I'D FOUND THAT OUT EARLIER BUT OH WELL.

besides that, interesting to see how many of the games have some sort of makai related stuff. i guess then it's nice to come back to it, huh. you've been there reimu, several times...

also if i mixed anything up in the games that is because i did all of those in 3 hours and have the memory of a rotten grandma. sorry
