For anyone who didn't catch it on other social media, I have finally moved out of the "temporary" apartment I was stuck in for 7 months, thanks to a lot of emotional and logistical support from friends, and a generous amount of financial support from the folks who gave to my GoFundMe. I am endlessly grateful to all of you, and if I weren't so goddamn tired right now I'd be more eloquent in saying so.
I've spent the past few weeks of unpacking and working out the bus routes around my new place trying to figure out how to explain what was so terrible about the last one. Most attempts devolved into page upon page of rage, which is not really what I want to be doing here. On the other hand, I also don't want to downplay how bad it was.
Spoiler: The temp apartment was Very Very Bad.
The tl;dr is that I was offered someone's spare room on the condition that I help out a little extra with household chores and caring for their rats, because the pet owning roommate had recently had back surgery and was still mobility-impaired. What actually happened is that as soon as they realized I had any basic life skills whatsofuckingever, I was cornered into becoming the 24/7 on-call House Adult. I would have gone on strike, but the other two people in the apartment were so terrible at coping with absolutely any aspect of being alive that if I had, one or both of them would probably be dead now.
That is not hyperbole. I sat back at one point and realized that I had talked to 911 dispatch five times in the preceding four months. None of those calls were for me. To be clear, I ain't mad about other people having medical problems. All five of those calls were appropriate and necessary uses of emergency services. I just resent the hell out of being the default option for handling all of it, even though none of the medical emergency problems were mine, and there were other people in the house. Literally, Short Roommate had a catastrophic asthma attack one night, and when she was wheezing too hard to talk she passed the phone to Tall Roommate -- who immediately ran to the other end of the apartment, banged on my door, and handed the phone to me. It got to the point where I just told the operator what was up, went downstairs to unlock the door for EMS, stood in the corner answering the occasional question until they hauled someone off to the hospital, and then went right back to bed, because none of this was my problem. And that's just the 911 calls, not even counting the number of times I had to talk her down out of a dissociative episode, or any of the other shit I was not warned about and did not volunteer to do. They wore me down until my only response to "a fellow human can't breathe" is "fuck's sake, why am I even involved here".
They both needed a lot more, and a lot more professional, help than they could possibly have gotten out of a random civilian roommate. They both fought tooth and nail against actually getting any of it. Every time Short Roommate was dragged to the hospital, her discharge papers included a big fat packet full of social services, resources, and business cards for actual physical people to phone. I know this because whenever I cleaned the apartment, I found them on the fucking floor, whereupon I placed them on her fucking keyboard, and told her point-blank to call these people. As far as I know, she never did.
I am neither qualified nor equipped to be a live-in caregiver for anybody. There is a fucking reason I have never wanted children. I keep critters because if you give them food, water, toys, and boxes to sleep in, you can leave them to entertain themselves for hours while you work or sleep, and no one will arrest you.
There was a bunch of other stuff. Tall Roommate rarely if ever cleaned anything, including herself, unless directly ordered to do so and given a detailed list of instructions of what you meant by "clean". I only ever got her to wash her own damn dishes once, and I did it by messaging her from the other room 'I just found a mouse in the sink eating snacks off your dirty plates GO DO YOUR DISHES'. She had a laundry list of problems, but the relevant one here is that she was high-support-needs autistic with no support and zero inclination to find any.
[Did I mention the mice? We had mice. All over. The rats murdered two of them when they got into the cages, looking for the free-feed bowl.]
Short Roommate clearly loved her rats but didn't actually do any of the rat care beyond petting and playing. One of them was tremendously sick at one point and needed meds q6h. She was supposed to be helping with that and didn't, which meant that I went several weeks on a maximum of six hours of uninterrupted sleep a night. I tore the fuck into her for that one, pointing out in exactly so many words that some of these meds were painkillers and if the rat didn't get them on time HE SUFFERS. Not doing any of the grunt work, Short Roommate evidently thought rats were so easy she should just keep getting more of them! She rescued two, one of whom was preggo, kept several of the babies, and started talking about waiting for one of the girls to grow up so she could breed him with one of her younger boys.
Gentle Reader, I promise you the only reason I did not strangle her in her sleep that very night was that I knew, deep in my heart, that I could not move the body down two flights of stairs by myself, and if I left it up to Tall Roommate, the corpse would still be in the apartment today.
If I were inclined to any sympathy, it would have died when Short Roommate moved out to shack up with New Boyfriend and New Boyfriend's Mother. She initially took all the rats with her, which made them officially not my problem anymore, but I woke up one morning to a message that said something like "[New Boyfriend's Mother] says that if I show up to our new place with the rats she's not going to let me in, [Tall Roommate] is coming back with all the rats and everything they own". I found out later that this was because their new place was in section 8 housing, where you are not allowed to have pets that aren't service or support animals. Which Short Roommate had known the entire time, and just... made no plans for. At all. Unless "ignore everything until bitchslapped by reality, then panic and make unreasonable demands of other people" counts, I guess.
Eight rats. She dumped eight rats on me. Eight. I wound up taking care of them all without help; Tall Roommate was incapable of keeping anything in her habitat clean, including herself, and I wasn't willing to let her neglect animals. I was actually down to one rat of my own, having lost my two venerable old men, and was looking for a new friend or two for Tseng. Which I had to stop doing, because nine fucking rats is a lot of rats, and I couldn't in good conscience bring Rats nos. 10 & 11 into this shitshow. Naturally, none of the rats got along; two pairs of boys had to be kept apart, and both of them tried to pick fights with poor Tseng, and four of them were girls that had to be kept away from all of the boys for obvious reasons. It was exhausting and a catastrophe.
Once I had the rats she apparently made no further effort to re-home them, although she did keep telling Tall Roommate to come knock on my door and take pictures of them. (I put a stop to this. Tall Roommate did it because Short Roommate had broken up with her to shack up with New Boyfriend, and Tall Roommate had literally no way to cope with this other than try desperately to get her back.) I bugged her to do something about this until, predictably, I had to contact the local rat rescue people to find fosters less than a week before my moving crew was scheduled. When I told her, she replied "oh, I was just about to submit that". Sure you were. And while you're here, I have this nice bridge to sell you.
[The four girls and two youngest boys went to Mainely Rat Rescue. It looks like the boys have already found a home, but the girls are up for adoption. I kept the two old men, who both have special care needs; Garion has breathing problems that involve his own asthma inhaler and a steady diet of NSAIDs, and Errand has attitude problems that involve picking fights with any rat who isn't Garion. They're both just shy of three(!) and unlikely to find homes through a foster program, plus I'm already their third caretaker, so I couldn't send them off with a stranger. They are currently sulking because I wouldn't supplement their dinner with all of my dinner -- which is to say, they're fine.]
The point is, my brain just about died off. The only time in that apartment that I didn't spend cleaning up after three grown adults, two of whom weren't even me, were the weeks after Short Roommate moved out to shack up with New Boyfriend, which she had broken up with Tall Roommate to do, and Tall Roommate took it so badly she ended up inpatient before she ate a bottle of Tylenol. (I called 911 when I overheard her plans. It was about 50% "a fellow human is in need of help" and 50% "argh jesus fuck THIS IS NOT MY JOB please go talk to someone who is actually paid to deal with this".) I am slowly clawing my way back to the surface, so if you'll just bear with me, I'll be back on Twitch this Sunday 3-7 Eastern, and type out more things that have been on hold while I tried to retain at least some of my marbles.

It’s pretty scary being immunocompromised at a time like this. As stressful as it is not knowing how long this will go on for and that I am temporarily laid off from my job just after finding it after being unemployed since before Christmas, I am grateful for our Canadian government who is putting so much in place to help us right now. My husband’s hours have been cut back and after this week I will have no income coming in until I can apply for the emergency benefit. I’m hearing I will need to be without pay for 14 days before I can apply and I’m hoping that isn’t the case so that we can get funds in time to pay our April bills. But despite it all, I’m viewing it as a blessing to be able to stay home and stay safe. I have Lupus, hypothyroidism, a heart condition and asthma. Lupus has attacked so many things in my body over the years. I started getting sick a couple months after getting married in 2009. I was diagnosed with Lupus in 2010. It has attacked my kidneys, my GI tract, my lungs, my skin and my joints. I take medication that suppresses my immune system and have to always be careful not to get sick. So I am grateful I’m at home staying safe and hoping I don’t catch this. My husband still works 3 days a week and gets our groceries so he could bring it home but we are doing all we can to prevent. Lupus has taken away my ability to work full time, I can only manage to work part time, which in turn has taken away our dream of owning a house and having a child. We just can’t afford those things and health wise I don’t know I could manage parenting. It’s been heart breaking to have to give up so many dreams because of my Lupus. Lupus medications have also affected my singing voice. I have sung from the time I could talk. It has been my life. I wanted to sing professionally but didn’t have the confidence in my appearance to pursue it but I still love singing. It is heart breaking when my meds or lupus causes vocal issues and I can’t sing. But on the days I can I love to record covers of Taylor Swift’s songs. I admire Taylor’s strength so much and while I’m older than her she has taught me a lot about life and her music has gotten me through the bad days of Lupus including surgeries. I love seeing Taylor helping her fans with money in these trying times. While I’m stressed I’m sure with the government help and our savings we will be fine. But so many others are not and desperately need that money. I just want to thank you Taylor for all you do and for being my guiding light in the darkness. I do not want any money, but would love a chance to meet you one day and hug you and thank you face to face for the huge impact you have had on my life. And at this time of social distancing, what I’d love more than anything is for you to see some of my covers! 🙏🏻💗🤞🏻 Here is a link to my playlist of my covers. Hope you watch and enjoy them! @taylorswift

Coughing
Summary: Noah has a post-op complication (Crockett/Noah)
WC: ~1.2k
The cough starts eight weeks later.
All things considered, Noah heals well. He takes all his medication and titrates off the painkillers. Every checkup shows improvement. In fact, Noah starts watching out for what he eats and works out more often to try and keep himself healthier in the wake of all of this. Without his spleen, he’s going to be immunocompromised, and everyone assumes he understands that. Just like Maggie, he wears more protective gear around infectious patients, and they try to keep him more in the service of injuries. Eight weeks of getting better, and everyone’s proud of him.
But the cough starts early in the morning, when their alarm goes off and as soon as Noah sits up, he coughs, wet and heavy. Crockett’s up too in an instant, rubbing his back and telling him to breathe through it until his breathing slowly comes back under control, if a little rough.
“You okay?”
“Inhaler?” Noah wheezes.
Crockett gets up to dig through their medicine cabinet, making a mess and realizing that this isn’t normal. Noah had asthma when he was young. The inhaler, it’s just in case nowadays. When he moved in, he says he still gets attacks when he’s really stressed out. Crockett wants to believe that’s all this is, especially because the stress trigger is obvious, but deep down? He knows what an asthma attack is like, and that this wasn’t it.
He keeps rubbing Noah’s back as he takes two doses and sniffles. Another red flag. Crockett reaches up and cups his cheek under the guise of affection, but really he’s looking for warmth. A fever. He’s got good instincts, and something about this is setting them off.
“I know it’s your day off,” he says. Noah’s skin is hot to the touch. “But maybe you should come in with me, let me check you out.”
“I’m okay, it was just asthma.”
Crockett’s heart hurts. “You had major traumatic surgery a couple months ago. Even if that’s the case, you should let me take a look and make sure everything’s okay.”
“Can’t we do that here?”
“Do we have a lab here, sugar?”
Noah groans and falls back against the bed. “No labs, c’mon. You know I hate getting my blood drawn.”
He pouts, adorably pathetic, and Crockett can’t resist kissing him and he’s close to giving in. He’s a weak man when it comes to Noah, he can admit that. So he sighs and leans back a little.
“I’ll do what I can, and if you’re really okay, I won’t bring you into the ED.”
“Thank you.”
Crockett grabs his bag from by the closet. He calls it his little housecall kit. Even if he rarely uses it, it makes him feel more secure to know he has it in the event of an emergency. Or Noah refusing to go get a proper checkup. He starts with the thermometer, giving it a pass across Noah’s forehead until it beeps at him.
“100.2,” he reads aloud. “That’s a fever.”
“Not a high one.”
He gets his stethoscope next and fits it into his ears before holding it up to Noah’s chest. His heart audibly speeds up, the way it always does when Crockett touches him, but it was already faster than he’d like to begin with. And when he listens to his chest… he can hear that Noah is still breathing in both lungs, but he can also hear that he’s having trouble with it, and there’s fluid. He pulls his stethoscope back and it must show on his face.
“Crockett-”
“You need to get to the ED.”
Noah shakes his head. “Look, I’m okay, I promise. If it gets worse, I’ll get checked out.”
“If it gets worse…” Crockett’s chest hurts now, too. “Noah, listen to me. It’s early. You’re not at your strongest right now, you need to get treated immediately.”
He doesn’t argue, nor does he agree. Instead, he coughs again, hard, long enough that it’s frightening because Noah isn’t breathing. Crockett can’t do much but rub his back until he starts gasping for breath again.
“Sugar, I’m taking you to med,” he says firmly, and helps Noah to his feet.
His skin is warm to the touch, a little clammy, and he’s shivering now as they walk slowly to the front door. It’ll be a thirty minute drive to med in the traffic, and then they should be okay. Once they get to the hospital, everything will be fine. Noah will be okay. Crockett promises himself as such. He won’t let anything too bad happen to Noah, and they’ll probably just monitor him and put him on medication. Everything will be fine.
He buckles Noah’s seatbelt for him and turns the heating on. The cold weather probably doesn’t help, either. But it’s not too far to med, and once they get there, it’s going to be okay. Even if Noah coughs on and off for the entire ride there in varying degrees of severity.
As Crockett’s finally walking him into the ER, Noah’s legs give out, and one of his coughs produces a thick, dark red dribble down his chin.
“I need help,” he yells, dropping to the floor with Noah and cradling him close against his chest. “It’s okay. Just breathe.”
Ethan, Will, April, and Doris are there right away, their faces twisted with concern as they help him carry Noah to a treatment room. He’s still coughing and wheezing. The blood is new, and Crockett would be panicking if his brain wasn’t automatically shifting into Doctor mode.
“What’s going on?” Ethan asks, putting his stethoscope in his ears and pressing the end to Noah’s chest.
“He was having a hard time breathing this morning. Low fever, cough. His lungs sounded congested. He collapsed on the way in.”
“This morning?”
Crockett helps get Noah on the monitors and clears his throat. “That’s not important. He can’t breathe, Choi.”
“April, let’s get him on oxygen.” Will elevates the end off the bed so that Noah’s no longer laying down, which does help somewhat. “Sat’s in the mid eighties, let’s get that quickly. Can we get a chest x-ray in here?”
They arrange the lead blankets on Noah’s body before pulling down the emergency x-ray. Noah’s shaking enough that Crockett and Ethan have to steady him long enough for the image to get taken.
“Definitely some fluid,” Will says, gesturing at the white film. “We’ll want a closer look on CT. But in the meantime, let’s see what we can do about raising his blood ox. April, temperature?”
April swipes the thermometer across his forehead and raises her eyebrows. “We’re up to 103.4.”
“It was 100 just an hour ago!”
Ethan tucks the blankets around Noah’s legs. “600 of acetaminophen.” He looks at the monitor. “And let’s actually get him on a nebulizer.”
As everything happens around him, Noah just lays there, eyes half open and chest heaving with another cough. Before they come back with the treatment, Crockett reaches over and wipes away the blood on his face.
“It’s gonna be okay,” Crockett says as April comes back with the mask and an oxygen tank. “You’re at med now, you’re going to be just fine.”

Smoke and Fire
An “Al has asthma” story nobody asked for, completely inspired by Shannon in lost because like, Maggie is adorable. And I love Al and thus project on her.
It’s going well, the asthma thing. She doesn’t bring it up mostly because it’s going so well, and because they’re not in an area with most of her triggers, and then, well, she crashes a fucking plane. There are more important things to deal with after that. And she has an inhaler, just for emergencies.
There were a lot of those, at the beginning, when she ran out of her daily meds and her body lost it’s fucking shit for a while, and every time she looks at the dose counter a little part of her dies inside. She’s fine. She also has eucalyptus oil (it’s horseshit, she knows, but it makes her feel better to have it). She definitely doesn’t want to go back to the beginning. So it’s fine.
At least, until the brush fires kick up. It’s been a really dry summer, and Al has been steeling herself for the fires for about a month now. The inhaler has 5 doses left, and every time she tries to tell June about her issue, something happens to derail her plan. The smoke starts to drift towards the caravan and Al maybe takes a couple more naps and spends a little more time inside the cars, but it’s fine.
About 3 days after the smoke hits the caravan, Al runs out of meds completely. Even her 5 doses are gone, and when she goes to take a puff in the morning (the smoke has invaded the van and her chest aches), the canister just rattles. She turns it around and checks the dose counter, and it’s all she can do not to panic and make it worse on herself.
“Deep breaths, deep breaths, deep breaths,” Al murmurs frantically, shaking the canister even though she knows it’s empty. She has to tell June, immediately. The smoke is only getting stronger as the drought keeps going and the fires spread. Al feels her chest ache and she coughs, grimacing. Then keeps coughing, shoving her arms above her head and easing herself to the floor. It passes eventually, but she’s left red faced and panting, leaning her head back against her bench. She has to tell June, but the idea of leaving her van and facing an even smokier outside world is agonizing. Her throat is raw from coughing, and she feels so tired. Al stands, ignoring the numbness in her fingers and feet from the lack of oxygen after her fit, and pulls her shirt over her face. She’s going to do it, but as she reaches for the doors they swing open and the sun shines in, practically blinding her, and a blast of smokey air starts choking her.
“Jesus fuck-” she breaks off with a nasty cough, telltale attack mucus getting caught in her throat, “warn a girl!”
“Sorry,” Charlie pants, “Morgan and Alicia got a distress call, and they need you to go.”
Al sighs, grimacing when it catches in her throat. She clears it, trying to push off the tightness in her chest and the need to lay down and cough until she throws up. Her hands are shaking as she shoves her trench spike into her belt and shoves her feet into her boots. She coughs again, too miserable to do much besides let it happen, leaning forward and bracing her forehead on her arms.
“Al? Are you okay?”
“Yeah,” she rasps, lifting her head and dragging herself to standing, “we just should probably move away from the smoke soon. It’s started to get irritating.”
“Yeah, Tess’ son is having a really bad time with it,” Charlie says, following Al out of the van. Al hums, looking for Alicia and Morgan. The smoke isn’t even that bad, she realizes. She’s just hypersensitive. She presses her palm over her face. Alicia holds up a hand from over by the truck, and Al walks over to them, swallowing constantly to push down the need to cough until she passes out. Her ribs hurt, a lot, and she just wants to fall over and go back to the van. And maybe suffocate. She’d be kind of down for it right now if she’s honest.
“Hey,” Alicia says. Al must look off because she wraps her hand around her wrist and doesn’t let her get in the car at first, even though Morgan is waiting.
“You good? You look a little off.”
“Yeah,” Al rasps. God, why can’t her voice sound normal? Get it together, she yells in her head.
“Just a little tired.”
They get in the truck, Al cramming her long legs in the back so Alicia can navigate.
“We got a couple people stuck pretty close to an active fire. They ran out of gas and one of their people has a broken ankle, so they need to be yanked out, and fast. It’s growing.”
Fuck, Al thinks, tilting her head back against the seat. Straight into the fire, and straight into an asthma attack almost definitely. She really should have told June as soon as it was clear they were all settling together. The smoke gets thicker as they drive, coming in through the car vents, and Al’s lungs begin to spasm. She forces herself to take calm, deep breaths, but ends up coughing anyway.
“Al, you okay?” Alicia asks, when Al can’t get her hacking under control. Al nods, swallowing hard, like it’ll get her to stop. Alicia hands her a bottle of water and she takes a few sips and forces herself to stop. She’s dizzy with the effort, and her oxygen is definitely low. She hands Alicia the water bottle and Alicia hands her a scarf.
“Wrap this around your face,” Alicia murmurs to her, letting her fingers linger against Al’s, “It’ll help with the smoke. That cough sounds nasty.”
“Thanks,” Al chokes out.
The extraction is simple. They meet the group at the agreed upon location, get them in the truck, and start to head back. The only problem is, they’re so close to the fire their clothes are getting singed.
Al’s breathing hurts so badly her vision starts to tunnel before they make it back to the car. She’s crammed in the front seat next to Alicia, the sides of their ribcages pressed together, and Al knows Alicia can feel how hard it is for her to get air. She just needs to make it back to the caravan, then she can find June and get sorted. She’s fine.
She can’t hold it back anymore suddenly, and she starts hacking, feet already numb. The coughing won’t stop, and the only times it does she can’t get air. It’s like breathing through a straw. Alicia is rubbing her back, saying something to Morgan, and she can hear the people they picked up talking nervously to each other.
“Breathe, Al. Just breathe, it’s just the smoke, you’re okay.”
Al lets her head fall to Alicia’s shoulder as she gasps for air. When she looks down, her hands are contracted and immobile, thumbs tucked into her palms, fingers curled. She’s fucked. She’s so fucked. She tries to wiggle her fingers and when she can’t she whimpers, wheezing in fear. She’s never had an attack this bad, not without an ER to go to and a nebulizer to use, steroids to take. Alicia cups Al’s head, pressing it against her temple.
“It’s the smoke, baby,” Alicia says, stroking her fingers through Al’s hair, “just breathe, okay?”
“It’s n-n-not just the sm-o-o-oke,” Al gets out in between wheezing inhales and choking exhales. She starts coughing afterwards, numb to her knees from her feet.
“What do you mean?” Alicia barks, still cradling Al’s head.
“Asthma,” Al wheezes out. Alicia swears angrily, releasing her grip on Al’s head to raise Al’s arms up. The gasping gets easier, but Al’s lungs are screaming at her and she feels like she’s choking.
“I know,” Alicia whispers, “I know, I know, just try, Al.”
“Bag,” Al forces out, “my bag.”
“What’s in your bag?”
“Eu-Euc-” she can’t get the words out, her lungs spasming and forcing her to start coughing to a degree that makes her black out for a second. When she comes back around she’s limp against Alicia, too weak to even cough, just wheeze and gasp for air.
“Is it this?” Alicia holds out a small bottle and Al nods, whimpering. She opens her mouth to speak but nothing comes out, just more gasping.
“We’re almost home, baby, Almost there. What do I do with this?”
“Ch-” Al mimes rubbing her chest and Alicia drips some of the eucalyptus oil on her chest and starts to rub it into her skin.
“N-n” Al gestures to her nose with one cramped hand, and Alicia holds the bottle up. It’s not working. It’s not WORKING, it’s not-
“Morgan, start driving faster. She’s blue. Just hang on, Al. June can help.”
Al can’t even gasp anymore, just lays slumped in Alicia’s arms and wheezes in and out. Alicia is rubbing her back, whispering against her temple.
“Keep trying to breathe, Al. That’s it. In and out, you’re doing so well.”
Al finds the breath to whimper, the strength to move her head to better press it better against Alicia’s temple. The car comes to a stop and Al goes to try to open the door, to move, to do anything, and she fails. Alicia smoothes a hand over her hair again.
“Just be still. June’s coming to us-you’re too sick to move right now.”
Al thinks she blacks out again, because when she wakes up there’s something over her face and she panics, but she’s too weak to do much more than shake.
“Take it easy,” June says, from where she’s holding the thing on Al’s face, “It’s just a spacer mask. Try to take even breaths, Al.”
She’s still leaning back against Alicia. Alicia is warm, still stroking her hair, and Al lets her, leaning her head back. Alicia scratches her nails lightly against Al’s scalp. Al takes deep breaths. An inhaler canister hisses. Al is so exhausted.
“There we go,” June whispers. Al realizes that June has a stethoscope pressed against her chest. She can breathe. She can breathe, and then Strand is lifting her out of the car, June pressing a scarf to her face to block smoke. Al reaches for Alicia.
“I’m right here,” Alicia murmurs, as Strand lays her in the passenger seat of the van. She wishes she could lay down but she knows she can’t, not after an attack that bad.
“How many puffs,” Al rasps, as Alicia pulls a blanket up over her and then sits in the driver’s seat.
“Like, six.”
“Jesus,” Al groans. Alicia reaches over with a cool cloth and sets it on Al’s face.
“You’re off your feet for like three days, minimum,” Alicia says, “and June has steroids in the truck for you. Lucky you.”
“Hate steroids,” Al mumbles.
“Yeah well, you almost died on me today, so you’re taking them. And we’re talking about the whole ‘not mentioning your potentially life threatening illness’ when you’re better.”
“Yeah,” Al whispers. She’s so tired.
“Go to sleep. I’ll be here when you wake up,” Alicia whispers.
Al trusts that she will be.

All right, all right, people are started to get annoyed rather than laughing, so let’s cut this short.  Here’s the story of how my mom accidentally poisoned me!
So I have asthma.  This went undiagnosed until I enlisted in the Air Force in 2007 and subsequently passed out in formation less than a week in.  (It went undiagnosed, interestingly, because in the words of the Air Force medic who tested me, I have the lung capacity of a lifelong wind instrument player or long-distance runner--so it all muddled out to slightly worse than average, and we thought I just got winded easily.  Nope!  I’m a weird mutant whose weird mutation just doesn’t work.  Go figure.)  People with asthma, it turns out, are quite often allergic to aspirin--something I didn’t take once in my entire runup to my twenties.
The first time I took an aspirin, because I’d run out of ibuprofen (the stuff in Advil) and decided to try something else, I just kinda wheezed a little and didn’t think much of it.
The second time I took aspirin, it was worse, and I realized I was having some kind of weird reaction, so I stopped taking it.  Then I found out I was allergic because asthma, went to the store, bought a five hundred pill candybottle of ibuprofen, put it on my shelf, and didn’t have another headache for four months.
The next time I had a headache, the ibuprofen gave me a pretty rough asthma attack.  Because!  Guess what!  There’s a whole class of what’s called Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, or NSAIDs, that are perfectly fine for asthmatic people to take...until they trigger their aspirin allergy.
After that, they’re poison.
At this point, I do a bunch of research and discover that nearly every over-the-counter painkiller available to me is ibuprofen-based.  The stuff that I’m told is safe for me to take is acetaminophen, the stuff in Tylenol.  Half the acetaminophen-based painkillers out there have ibuprofen in them, too.  It’s a nightmare finding stuff safe for me to take, and around this time my sinus polyps are really getting going and I’m suffering daily pressure headaches which is a whole other ball of fun let me tell you.  So I get in the habit of buying 500-pill candybottles of generic 500mg Tylenol tablets, keep a general eye out for safety’s sake, and otherwise largely leave the whole thing on the shelf.
I make it to my second year of college without another incident.
Spring of 2014, my mother’s in Bangor, picking me up so we can have dinner out, and I complain about headaches when I get in the car.  (I had surgery to remove the sinus polyps!  They’re growing back by this point.)  She hems and haws, because she has a couple Aleve in a plastic baggie that she keeps around for her personal painkilling needs, and she can’t remember whether they’re ibuprofen or not.  We look it up--there’s no ibuprofen or aspirin in it, hooray!  It’s got something called naproxen sodium instead.
At this point, we aren’t aware that acetaminophen isn’t just safe for me to take, it’s the only safe painkiller for me to take.  Naproxen sodium is another NSAID, and I’m in for a rough night, because I pop that sucker in my mouth like it’s the cure for nose cancer and we head off to Chili’s to try them out for dinner.
I’m pretty much okay when we walk in the door.  We order appetizers--I get a little dish with soft pretzel sticks in it--and we get to chatting about life.  As the conversation goes on, I get a little coughy, and a little snotty, and then I have to excuse myself to the bathroom a few times to blow my nose, because at this point my respiratory system is trying to strangle itself.  The pretzel sticks come and I’m starting to wheeze, but I barely care because I tried one of those bastards and they were goddamn incredible.  My mother starts to get scared, despite my insistence that this has happened before, and she and I eventually get up to leave because she wants to drive me to the emergency room.  While she’s apologizing to the restaurant manager (who insists on turning down her offer to pay for the food we ordered), I dash back to the table and grab the five remaining pretzel sticks, because screw leaving those behind.
So begins the most memorable car ride of my entire life.
Mom’s driving through downtown Bangor, starting to panic, because at this point I am audibly choking on my own throat, but I’m on cloud nine because these god damn pretzel sticks, man, holy shit.  I’m snarfing them down, and babbling about how good they are--and anyone who’s spent any amount of time around my mother and I at the same time knows my absolute favorite game is making her laugh--and generally doing my best (somewhat on purpose, even) to distract her from the fact that her son is suffocating in the passenger’s seat.  She, meanwhile, is doing her damnedest not to swerve off the road, because she’s alternating between hysterical tears of terror and hysterical tears of laughter.  She rolls down the window so I can get some fresh air, and I alternate between gulping down oxygen and suffocating myself with pretzel sticks because why are these so goddamn good.
Mom’s losing her shit laughing when we pull up to the hospital, and I’m red-faced, pretzel-less, and starting to slow down, so she pulls up to the ambulance door and runs inside.  After being directed by a very annoyed desk clerk to pull around the side, we go inside, and while I make a few more half-hearted efforts to tell jokes, I spend most of the rest of my wait red-faced and desperately dragging breaths through my closing windpipe.  I’m in a bad way, guys.  Mom finally gets them to bring me in ahead of some people who aren’t suffocating to death, and they pump me full of some kind of Benadryl cocktail, which makes me loopy and high and sleepy.  I spend a few hours drifting in and out of consciousness, high off my ass (and boy howdy do I hate being high) and at one point, because I’m in no state of mind to do social math, I tease Mom about getting me that Dave Strider figurine I wanted.  Then i go back to sleep.
Eventually, I’m good to go.  I get sent off with some information about my condition, plus the knowledge that this particular allergic reaction gets worse every time it happens.  The next time it happens, I may die before I get to the hospital.  Mom takes me to a pharmacy, buys me a pair of epi-pens I never wind up needing because I get religious about being careful what I put in my mouth (I still have ‘em, because I’m not throwing away three h u n d r e d dollars of medicine, what the hell is wrong with you) and...well, honestly, the night past that point is a bit of a blur, because I’m loopy from the meds and just had a near-death experience.
A couple weeks later, though, I got a surprise in the mail!
Tumblr media
This is Dave Strider!  I almost died to get him.  Literally!
To this day, Mom and I tease each other about how she spent my entire childhood not murdering my insufferable mug, only to almost kill me by accident once I was out of her hair.  I’ve been sending her screenshots of your reblogs and tags and discord messages and she has been laughing her ass off.
So, I’m sorry I strung you all along for that long, but I did say my favorite game was making my mother laugh.

Breathe.
So the last part of the Photographer and the Lonely Artist is driving me crazy. I’m taking a break from overthinking that by writing fluffy fluffy fluffy drabbles from the one word prompts some of you sent a while back!
AU/AH where Klaroline are neighbors. Longer than I planned it to be because, well, it’s me. Enjoy!
Carolinejerked out of her sweet slumber to the sound of incessant knocking. One minuteshe was on her bed, snuggled between comfortable blankets and the second she’son the floor, yelping as her elbow hit the floor.
“What thefuck?” She muttered, too sleepy to actually yell. “What’s going on?”
As her eyesadjusted to the darkness, another series of forceful knocks attempted to jolther out of her sleepy state.
“You’reabout to break the door, asshole.” Her voice was a little louder but still scratchywith sleep. And as if the intruder heard her, the doorbell rang the next momentinstead of another knock.
“Fine.” She huffed.“I’m coming.”
Standing upquickly, Caroline ignored the way her head spun with the quick movement. Shestomped towards the door, equal parts angry and annoyed which meant only onething: Whoever was on the door was dead. All is fair when you wake Caroline sorudely.
“WHAT?” Sheyelled as she threw the door opened, only to stutter back on her feet.
Caroline didnot know what to expect when she threw the door opened. She did not have asingle inkling over who it might be. But she certainly did not expectKlaus, her hot, drop-dead gorgeous, new neighbor, standing on the other side ofthe door. Klaus had moved in two months before, bringing in perfect genes and awinning smile into their quiet building. She still remembered the first timeshe met him, how she reeled at the way he moved and how she stared and staredat his unfairly handsome face, gaze lingering on his lips. And he had known itthen, smirking, doing his own fair share of ogling. When she snapped out of herfantasies (it had been too long), she cleared her throat, turned herdumbfounded expression to a polite smile, welcomed him into the building andwalked into her apartment without a second glance. As soon as she was in herapartment, however, she found herself leaning against the door inhaling sharply.
“Wow,” shewhispered, looking up towards any deity that might exist. “Good job.”
From thatmoment on, Caroline both loved and hated running into the unfairly handsome Klaus. He was a pleasure to look at, there was no doubt about it. And that definitelytranslated into her dreams. But he was also incredibly arrogant and smug.Everything he did exuded a confidence that made Caroline simultaneously want topunch him and kiss him. His smirks, his flirtatious tone, the way he tilted hishead, the way his eyes sparked with mischief even as the dimples made him lookso innocent, so welcoming, all screamed danger to Caroline. Katherine wasadamant that she did not need to overthink it, just jump his bones to scratchan itch and be done with it. But behind it all, Caroline knew he would becharming, irresistibly so, making him a professional heartbreaker. And shecould not handle that. She’d done it before and was not up for it again. So shelet herself enjoy the way his eyes scanned her and the way he smirked in herdirection and the way he starred in her dreams.
Excepttonight, Klaus was not wearing any of his usual crooked smiles or infuriatingsmirks. He did not dimple at the sight of her in nothing but short shorts and atank top without bra, did not tease her for the mess of her hair, did not movelike he owned the entire universe. Instead, he stood before her in a pair ofsweatpants and an old t-shirt, his hair sticking around his head in odd anglesand his face, much to Caroline’s horror, as pale as a sheet of paper. Hisshoulders moving rapidly as he seemed to struggle to breathe. And she couldswear his lips were a little blue.
“Klaus, what’swrong?” She squeaked, all sleep gone now from her eyes and her irritation longforgotten.
“Asthma …attack.” He wheezed out, shocking her with the way his voice barely scratchedits way out of his throat.
“Oh shit.”She muttered, unable to do anything but stare at him with growing anxiety.
“Hospital.” Hemanaged to get out. A flash of annoyance on his face through the painedexpression. “Can’t… drive.”
“Right!”Caroline snapped out of her frenzy. “Let me just grab my keys and…you justbreathe.”
“Thanks…sweetheart.” He bit out. She would have snapped at him for finding the time tomock her even in this state but he was growing increasingly paler. And she wasso not going to be the reason the world lost such a beautiful, albeit a littletoo smug, face. So instead, she wordlessly rolled her eyes and quickly slippedinto her bedroom, changing into jeans and throwing on a jacket over her tanktop. Within two minutes, she was hurrying out of her apartment and practicallydragging Klaus behind her.
-
The drive tothe hospital was anything but graceful. Caroline broke every traffic rule knownto mankind, ruining her perfect history. But she could not bring herself tocare when Klaus looked like he was incapable of doing anything but focus on hisbreathing and yet growing paler. Thankfully, the streets of Chicago were empty at3:00 a.m., reducing their chances of a car crash.
Within tenminutes, Caroline was rushing Klaus into the ER, leaving him to the capablehands of the doctors. She watched from a distance as doctors and nurses fussedover him, placing an oxygen mask over his mouth and nose and hooking his arm toan IV. It took about another ten minutes for the doctors and nurses to settledown around him. And Caroline finally let out a breath she did not know she washolding. At that point, one nurse headed towards her with a kind smile.
“He’ll befine. The attack is under control. We’ll just need to keep him here for acouple of hours for the meds to work and to make sure that he won’t haveanother attack.”
“Thank you.”Caroline said, smiling back at the young nurse.
Before thenurse walked away, she leaned in closer to Caroline to whisper conspiratorially,“Nice catch.” She winked, leaving Caroline stuttering that she wasn’t hisgirlfriend. Not that the nurse was particularly wrong. He would be a nicecatch. In a universe where he didn’t make her want to slap that smug expressionoff of his face half the time.
Shaking herhead, she joined him at his bedside, relieved to find that he was alreadygaining back color. He turned his head towards her, attempted to shoot her asmile that she couldn’t quite make out through his oxygen mask. She waved himoff, shooting him a comforting smile.
“You justbreathe.” She said.
His eyebrowsshot up, a teasing glint in his eyes. She could almost hear him saying “Yougive the best, least obvious advice, love.”
“Shut up.” Sherolled her eyes, tempted to stick her tongue out at him.
Klausremoved the oxygen mask, grinning at her. “I didn’t say anything, love.” Hisvoice returned to its velvety tone, only slightly gravelly from exertion. Whichsomehow made it sexier.
Her eyeswidened, trying to shove the mask back on his face. “Oh my God, don’t removethat thing!”
His amusedlaugh turned into a cough, after which he obliged and placed the mask back onhis mouth, though the mirth never left his eyes.
“Do youseriously want to risk another attack just to tease me?” she squeaked out.
He removedthe mask once more, causing Caroline to huff and cross her arms over her chestat his stubbornness. “Didn’t know you cared so much.” He winked, shooting her awinning smile.
She scoffed,“I only care because I’m not a fan of late night emergency calls.
He placed ahand over his chest in mock-hurt. “You wound me, love. You mean to say that mypain does not affect you at all? And here I thought we were getting to knoweach other.” He shook his head, pressing his lips in sadness.
“No,” sheinsisted, reaching for the mask and snatching it from his hand to replace it onhis mouth. “It doesn’t. I’m an ice queen.”
Before hecould deliver a witty retort, the nurse walked towards them, fiddling with theIV and shooting them a beaming smile.
“Looks likeyour color is returning.” She said brightly. “You were cutting it close there.Should’ve come here earlier.”
He shrugged.
“He’sstubborn.” Caroline volunteered, shooting him a pointed smile.
“Good thingyou had someone to drive you here.” The nurse grinned at Caroline. “The Café ison the first floor, by the way, if you want to grab coffee. He’s gonna be herefor a while.”
With thatthe nurse left.
“You don’thave to stay, Caroline. I’m perfectly fine taking a cab back.” Klaus said, dutifully placing the oxygen mask back on his mouth at Caroline’s warningglare.
She shookher head. “I’m not leaving. What if you need something?”
The nextthing out of his mouth made her immediately regret her sincerity. “I knew youhad a soft spot for me.” He grinned.
“Are youseriously incapable of shutting up?”
For a fewmoments, they grew quiet. Him taking deep breaths while he held her gaze.Slowly, the teasing glint in his eyes dissipated to be replaced with a softlook that she had never seen him wear before. Turning the blues in his eyes toa welcoming ocean, inviting her in, sucking her in. And she found herselfholding her breath as he slowly removed his oxygen mask.
“Caroline,”he said gently, almost in a whisper.
“Yes?” shehated how breathless her voice was.
“You’re aterrible driver.” He smirked.
“You knowwhat, you can fend for yourself.” This time, she did stick her tongue out athim, letting out a frustrated noise as she began to walk away, wanting to punchthe amused laughter out of him.
“No, wait, wait, sweetheart.” He called after her, his hand shooting out to grab hers, tingling her skin, freezing her movement. “Wait,” he said again, this time givingin to a violent bout of coughing. He placed the mask back on his mouth asCaroline ran her thumb back and forth over the back of his hand. The feel oftheir entwined hands spread warmth through her, and from the way he watched themovement of her thumb on his hand, she knew she had a similar effect on him.
“Serves youwell for mocking me.” She teased, but it came out a lot softer than sheintended.
Taking a fewmore deep breaths, he removed the mask, looking at her with the same softexpression as he laid his second hand on top of hers, and drawing her theslightest bit closer. She watched her small hand engulfed by his callousedones, noting idly that the tips of his fingers were rougher than she thoughtthey would be. When she looked back up at him, a soft smile had etched itselfonto his face. She couldn’t help but think that he looked as if he had steppedout of a painting.
“Thank you,Caroline.” He finally whispered. “For helping me.”
She smiledat him slightly, unable to speak above a whisper. “That’s what neighbors arefor.”
He chuckled.“Is it now?”
“Yeah. It’sa difficult job, you know. Being a neighbor. All those late night calls.” She grinnedwhen he laughed. She noticed that he had an infectious laughed.
“How about Imake it up to you then?” He tilted his head to the side, smiling still when sheraised her eyebrows at him quizzically. “Let me take you out to dinnersometime, Caroline.”
The way he saidher name made her breath stutter. “Umm” she bit her lower lip, looking down attheir entwined hands once more before looking back up at his imploring eyes. “Ihave a better idea. I’m gonna be really hungry after we get out of here andthere is this place that serves the best pancakes just a couple of blocks awayfrom here.”
A few hourslater, Caroline found herself sitting across from Klaus, both of them still intheir pajamas, her hair still sticking out at odd angles much like his, with aplateful of chocolate chip pancakes in front of her, laughing at hisunimpressed expression at her choice of food. He insisted that nothing isbetter than simple plain pancakes. It was 9 a.m. when they finally made it backto their building, Klaus leaving her with a kiss on her cheek and a plea toaccept his invitation to dinner. She said yes with her heart in her throat, realizing the danger of the warmth he caused within her.
Pleasedon’t make me regret this. She chanted in her head.
And she didn’tregret it. She never did. Not even a little. Not even once.

Do car rental companies ask for proof of insurance?
Here's my circumstances, I'm 22(have credit card in my name) and am going to rent a vehicle. I had insurance for 4-5 years, have never been at an at fault accident and have one speeding ticket, so I'm a pretty good driver, when gas was near $4.00 I traded in my vehicle, and it's fine as I bike everywhere as it's all close to me. I'm having family over for a couple days and need a car though, it's easy to drive around town, I'm almost 100% sure I wont get in a wreck, but I have a feeling the insurance would be more expensive than the rental itself which is ridiculous for someone with a driving record such as mine. Can I say purchase just liability and then sign something that says I'll pay for the rental if I do any damages, what would be the cheapest way to get out of this?""

Im losing all my teeth & I cant get insurance anywhere!!!!?
I am only 22 years old & I noticed all of my back teeth slowly breaking away about 6 months ago. I went to a clinic & found out I have a bad infection, next to no enamel & serious gum disease. I am a single mom of 2 young boys. I pay my own Rent phone electric & everything else with a next to nothing paycheck. So at the end of the month I am left with Nothing. I went to the welfare office & was turned down because I make more than 400$ a month. My job doesn't provide dental but this infection has spread so fast that I don't have 1 tooth that's not infected & the only ones that can even still be saved are the top 4 in the front. I don't even remember what it feels like to eat solid food & I have tried everything to get health insurance..but I have no $ left over @ the end of the mouth. I feel lost. Does any1 know of anything I can do? This is painful in every way.& I think it is crazy that I can not have dental insurance because I have a job. I cant quit my job to save my teeth. My fronts probably have less than a month b4 they start to chip away from the gum line...& I am out of options.""

""Car insurance for young male drivers, its cheaper to drive without it and pay the fines!?""
I really dont get it, car insurance on a 2000 plate 1litre yaris is over 10,000 - YES 10K! I do live in manchester, which is the most costly post code to get insured in but 10k is just a joke for a 18year old. Ive done it all correct too putting 1000 annual milage e.t.c So ive read online about how much people are fined when they are found driving without insurance and its about 200 on average. I know it can go upto 5000 but thats still cheaper than shelling out for insurance and your chances of getting caught arnt really high the way i would do it. Get a car, insure my dad on the car so it doesnt flag up on the police cameras when you drive past, drive to and from work only, and say the car is parked at work (nice postcode to get insurance cheaper) over night. which i can say it is my brother takes it on his night shift there. And if i do get caught i will say i took it without owners concent. TWOC the police call it. I just cant get it into my head at why the government dont do anything about insurance it kind of pushes people into breaking the law. And i would use public transport IF it didnt take me 4hours to get to and from work a day! ""
