Bitty birb in the nest is worth...? Part 19
Masterpost This is going to have many typos and spelling issues, but it currently feels like I've got an ice pick in my temple and my skin hurts so there's no rereading happening atm. Sorry!

Danny looked up as Tim Drake-Wayne strode into the lab and closed the door quietly behind himself.
“Tim?”
“Mm-hum?” Tim hummed as he sat down his thermos before he shed his messenger bag, coat, and school jacket onto an open part of desk.
Danny watched on with bemusement. The kid looked half asleep. “Not that it isn’t great to see you again, but what are you doing here, honey?”
“Bruce is on a call running Luthor in circles and then has to talk to legal about some stuff because Luthor is always an ass. We’re supposed to go run an errand and then to dinner together, so I’m stuck here until he’s ready to leave for the day.”
“I’m sorry,” Danny said honestly.
“It’s okay, at least Bruce won’t forget, not like—” Tim shut his mouth with a snap, seemingly suddenly thinking about what he was saying.
“It’s okay, I get it,” Danny said, because he did. “You need somewhere to hide out then?”
“Yeah, it’s… calm here.”
“Okay. Sit wherever you want that’s clear. If you need to move something, let me know first, okay?”
“Thanks,” Tim said, shoulders finally losing some of their tension.
“Of course, whenever you need.”
Not wanting to push Tim in any way, Danny kept a subtle eye on the boy as Tim absently wandered around Danny’s office. To Tim’s credit, he did try to touch anything or move things around, even as he obviously grew increasingly tired.
It would be a lot, Danny supposed, to be a teen ager trying to live up to the legacy of two important families in the area, learn the business, go to school, and (hopefully) also spend time with friends. Danny knew how hard it had been only having Phantom as an obligation.
While, sure, Danny wished Tim had made chosen a less neck cramping spot, he was happy to see Tim finally settle down and seemingly fall asleep… under one of Danny’s work benches. Danny couldn’t fuss too much, he’d done that plenty in grad school himself. Once Tim seemed properly asleep, Danny got up to fetch his cardigan from the hook by the door and took it to drape over the sleeping kid. Tim let a little huffed breath of air before he snuggled further into the cardigan and settled back into sleep.
It made Danny’s heart melt in a way that he didn’t want to think too hard about.
It really was no surprise when about forty-five minutes later one Bruce Wayne poked his head into Danny’s office. The door was hardly open when Danny had his finger up and over his mouth in the universal sign of ‘shush’.
Bruce titled his head curiously. Danny gave a little nod of his head towards the workbench that Tim was sleeping under. Silently, Bruce moved to the work bench and crouched down next to it. There was a soft, amused sound before Bruce reached out to brush his hand over Tim’s forehead, as if habitually checking for a fever.
When Bruce returned to where Danny was working, he asked softly, “How long has he been asleep?”
“A little over a half hour. It took him about ten minutes to settle in,” Danny answered, voice equally quiet.
“Then do you mind if I let him keep resting for another fifteen minutes or so? He’s likely to wake up on his own then.”
Danny shook his head. “Nope, let the kid rest. He seems like he needs it.”
Bruce glanced at Tim, his expression that soft sort of worried only parents seemed to get. “He does. He works too hard at… everything. He’s always trying to prove himself even when he doesn’t need to anymore.”
Danny made a little questioning noise as he got back to fiddling with the annoyingly tiny screws.
“His parents were… demanding. They had very exacting ideas of what proper high society behavior was,” Bruce explained. “I’m sadly not the best suited at dismantling those ideas either.”
“Ah… well, what do you do that encourages him to be a kid?” Danny asked.
“He skateboards, actually. And he enjoys photography, but even that became a goal what with art competitions at school.”
“Maybe take him and Damian on a mini art vacation? Somewhere pretty. Somewhere where it’s not about judges,” Danny suggested. He finally got the last screw seated so he glanced up at Bruce’s thoughtful face.
“That’s a good idea,” Bruce said. “I’ll start looking at what might work. Thank you.”
“Sure, ideas are kinda what I do,” Danny said and motioned to the office around him with the screwdriver.
Bruce’s answering chuckle was low and warm. “I suppose it is. I hope you’re also not overworking yourself.”
“I’m doing much better,” Danny assured Bruce. “I just needed some rest.”
“Which my children made sure you got. I’m still sorry that they kept you so long on Friday.”
It was Danny’s turn to laugh. “Honestly, I don’t think you really have much control over what they do.”
“No, I really don’t,” Bruce admitted. “But I wouldn’t have them any other way.”
“That’s good; they’re a pretty amazing family,” Danny said with a soft smile. “And if I don’t get to be sorry about falling asleep, you don’t get to be sorry about making me rest.”
“You drive a hard bargain, but deal.”
“I am a master business man,” Danny teased and ducked his head to hide his smile.
“I’ll have to watch for corporate take overs. Keep an eye on the stocks and papers.”
“Maybe. Oh, speaking of… Well, not speaking of but sort of related? You know, I was joking about us making the papers.”
Bruce hummed curiously so Danny set aside his tools to pull up the story that several coworkers had sent him on his table. He spun it to face Bruce. The picture of them in the box was big on the screen. They were pressed almost chest to chest with Bruce’s arms around Danny. It certainly looked incriminating.
“Well shit,” Bruce said with a sigh. He picked up the tablet to scan through the article. There wasn’t anything in it, of course, just wild speculation. “I hope you haven’t been harassed about this by anyone.”
“I don’t think anyone knows who I am to harass me,” Danny said honestly. “Some coworkers have sent me it, but apparently it’s just my luck to have both randomly run into a Wayne and be invited to an event and have one of my ‘spells’ when I’m around them.”
Bruce looked at him with one well manicured brow raised. “You have interesting luck.”
“Yep. It’s been quite a life so far. I was pretty much born into interesting luck and life has really lived up to that luck and died by it,” Danny said with a little chuckle as he took his tablet back.
“I feel concerned by that last part.”
Danny hummed in question, distracted by pulling his notes back up.
“The having died by the luck part.”
“Oh.” Danny smiled, but he knew that expression was less than a happy one. “I think I mentioned that there was an accident when I was a kid?”
Bruce nodded and lean his elbows on the work bench and crosses his arms. “You did. One that is apparently still affecting your pulse to this day.”
“Yes, well,” Danny glanced away from Bruce. Why was it still so hard to talk about. “When I was fourteen, I was electrocuted at at an… industrial level of voltage. Unsurprisingly it killed me. And hey, obviously I came back! But that sort of thing sticks around.”
“I’m sorry.”
Danny looked back at Bruce, honestly startled. In all this time, Danny wasn’t sure if he’d ever heard a ‘I’m sorry’ about his accident, not without strings attached. His lips quirked into a smile again. This one felt more pleasant. “Thanks. Trust me though, I’m grateful that life has, had been calmer.”
Whatever Bruce was going to say to that was cut off by a loud yawn, the sound of someone shifting around, and then the unmistakable bang of a limb against the metal legs of one of the workbenches.
Quiet cussing followed a moment later.
“You okay there, Tim?” Danny asked.
“Fine,” Tim hissed back.
“I’m sure I have an instant icepack in my office. We can grab one before we leave,” Bruce said.
“B?” Tim asked, voice noticeably brighter. A moment later he appeared out from under the desk.
“Hi, sweetheart, sorry that I had to take that call,” Bruce said as he stepped over to Tim. He reached out to brush the teen’s hair a little straighter.
“It’s fine, it’s Lex, I get it.”
“I know you get it, but that doesn’t mean it has to be fine.”
Tim just shrugged. The action made him notice the the cardigan draped over his shoulders. A little blush rose on his cheeks as he took it off and handed it back to Danny. “Sorry.”
“Nothing to be sorry for Tim, you weren’t any problem,” Danny assured him. “You’re welcome in my office whenever.”
“You’re going to regret that,” Tim said.
Danny just shrugged with a smile.
“Come on, chum, let’s go find that icepack. We’ll still get to your store before it closes,” Bruce said and started to guide Tim out by the shoulder.
Bruce glanced behind him and Danny gave a little wave to the retreating Waynes.
His luck indeed.

“What happened in Danny’s office that’s bothering you?” Tim asked. He had the icepack pressed against his elbow and was sitting almost sideways so that he could take in all of Bruce’s expression.
Bruce was doing that thing where he was feeling big, complicated emotions and wishing he wasn’t. Tim could read it in the way that Bruce’s shoulders were set, that little bit of tightening under his eyes, and the way he was very purposefully not frowning.
“B,” Tim pressed.
Bruce sighed, the sound all of his air. “I think we should leave Danny alone, both as Waynes and as Bats.”
Tim jolted and scrambled to sit up further. “Wait, what? Bruce, what happened?”
“Nothing bad,” Bruce assured Tim. “Nothing bad happened. Vicky got a picture of Danny and I at the ballet. We spoke some about it and Danny talked about how he had interesting luck. He said he was grateful that life has been calmer; he had to change that to had.”
“…oh.”
“It’s just that—”
“No, you’re right. I’ll try to talk to the others about it because you know they won’t listen to you about it.”
“I’m sorry, Tim.”
“It’s fine, I get it.”

Summary: Attempting to conceal her checkered past, a young dancer in Gotham (Y/N) lands a job at Ha-Ha’s and finds herself increasingly drawn to a shy, lonely clown named Arthur Fleck.

Arthur called immediately after you hung up the phone with Tina and Chantelle and asked you to meet him at City Central Station at noon.
“I have to go out to Long Island,” he said, a heavy undercurrent of apology in his voice. “And I wanted to ask if you’d be willing to come with me.”
“Sounds perfect,” you’d replied instantly.
Arthur laughed, surprised. “I, uh…well, I know it’s not very romantic. But it’s kind of an emergency and-”
“I’m there,” you said. “Is everything okay?”
“Yes, yes,” Arthur said. He sounded tense, flustered. You wished you were in the same room with him so you could put his arms around him and calm him down. Comfort him with your body. Among other things.
“Nothing’s wrong,” Arthur assured you. “I’m not hurt or anything. I can explain everything to you on the train. I’m sorry, I-”
“Don’t be sorry, Arthur,” you stopped him. “I’m happy just to spend time with you. No matter what we’re doing.”
You heard Arthur pause, releasing a relieved-sounding sigh on the other end, his tone softening. “I…I couldn't stop thinking about you last night,” he confessed. “I think I even dreamed about you.”
“Really?” you felt an uncontrollable smile spread across your face. Only Arthur Fleck could make you smile like a complete loon.
“Sorry. Is that weird for me to tell you that?”
“No!” you blurted. “In fact, I dreamed about you!”
Arthur laughed. “You did? Last night?”
“Uh…not last night, exactly.” You felt your cheeks heating up and felt glad Arthur couldn't see you blush. “Earlier. Like…maybe after the first time I saw you?”
“That’s sweet, Y/N. Was it a nice dream?”
“It was…very nice.”
If only Arthur knew the true carnal nature of that first dream. You’d get around to telling him someday…hopefully sooner rather than later.
And now, one hour later, here you were: one hour standing on the train platform waiting for him.
You glanced around Gotham City Central Station at all the bustling people - still rushing, still hustling, still rat-racing on a Saturday morning. They were like hamsters on one big gigantic wheel in a cage called Gotham, and although you knew you were one of them, having a day off gave you a refreshed perspective: Exactly who was winning this race? Why did normal people have to work themselves into the ground just to scrape by?
It seemed the winners of this race had already been called a long time ago.
Among the noise, traffic and images vying for your attention all at the same time, you locked eyes with a poster of Thomas Wayne. You shook your head. He was on television all the time these days. People seemed to think Wayne could “fix” Gotham and wanted him to run for mayor.
To put it bluntly: you thought those people were delusional.
There was no denying Gotham was a broken place. But was the wealthy mogul Thomas Wayne really the one to fix it? How could he know what the people of this God-forsaken city needed to get back on their feet? How could someone born and raised with an endless supply of silver spoons in his mouth possibly relate to living on the fringes of society?
The crowd parted and Arthur appeared, holding a newspaper under his arm. He spotted you and smiled. You ran up to him and leapt into his arms. Arthur caught you, spun you, then dipped you over and kissed you. The two of you were living in your own musical fantasy in the middle of a dirty, overcrowded train station.
“I’m so sorry that this is our second date,”Arthur said as he lowered you to the ground. “I wanted to plan something more romantic…a walk in the park, or maybe a trip to the-”
“Arthur,” you stopped him. “Anytime we’re together is romantic. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else in the world right now but here.”
He smiled shyly and gave you a tender kiss on the cheek.
The graze of his lips against you triggered a slew of wants. You wanted to kiss him again. Properly. In fact, you wanted to do a lot of things to him. The memory of the soft pull of Arthur’s lips against yours the night before had stirred within you like a fever since then - but you were worried that if you started, you wouldn't be able to stop. And there were too many people around. You’d have to behave yourself. At least for the time being.
“So where exactly on Long Island are we headed?” you asked. “And what’s this mystery mission you couldn’t tell me about on the phone?”
Arthur drew in a heavy breath. “It’s…look, I don’t want to sound crazy. I’m not sure if I believe it myself, but last night…”
He was interrupted by your train pulling loudly into the station.
“That’s the one we want,” he jerked his head towards it.
“Oh shit!” you exclaimed. “I just remembered, I didn’t buy a ticket!”
“Don’t worry,” Arthur fished into his jacket pocket and pulled out two small pieces of paper. “I got yours.”
After finding two empty seats together, you placed your hand on Arthur’s and listened. Listened as he told you everything: How his mother had been writing letters to Thomas Wayne (funny how you’d just been thinking about him…though to be fair, his smug face was plastered all over the city). How he hadn’t paid his mother’s compulsive letter-writing much mind. She was set in her ways and tended to overfocus on things that were of little to no consequence. And finally: how last night after coming home from your date, an unexpected burst of curiosity had cajoled him into reading one of her letters…
…in which his mother had disclosed something totally unexpected. Something shocking.
“Thomas Wayne?” you repeated, raising your eyebrows.
Arthur nodded.
“Your…father?”
You blinked. This was so out of left field, it had gone past left field and back to right again. You struggled to pick a reaction; there were so many coursing through your mind and heart. You could only imagine how Arthur was feeling.
“How did your mother even know him?” you asked, agog.
“She used to work for the Waynes. As their housekeeper. Just before I was born.”
You shook your head in stunned disbelief. “I have to say, I don’t know what to think. Do you believe her, Arthur?”
Arthur was silent for a moment, and you gave him space to find the words.
“At first I didn't, really. She hasn’t always been…the best at telling the truth. She thinks things are real that aren’t. I wonder sometimes if I get that from her.”
He unfolded the newspaper on his lap and began leafing through the pages.
“But now, when I look at pictures of him - and his pictures are everywhere - I can’t help but see a resemblance. Maybe it’s all in my head, I don’t know.”
Arthur landed on a picture of Wayne and his wife, gazing admiringly up at him as he waved to a crowd. He tore out the photo and creased back the edges so you both could see it more clearly.
“Do you think I look like him, Y/N?” Arthur asked.
“I don’t know…” You scoured the famous man’s face. The curve of his cheekbones, the arch of his eyebrows.
Like a bolt of lightning, it struck you.
“Shit, Arthur. I don’t know if I’m going crazy, but…now I do kind of see a resemblance!”
“I know,” Arthur said. “Now that I see it, I can’t stop seeing it.”
You peered in closer.
“But why wouldn’t she say anything until now?” you leaned back in your seat. “Why wait all these years?”
“She said she signed some papers promising she would keep it a secret. It was to protect me as their child, some big scandal coming out. But she said they loved each other. They just couldn’t be together.”
“Jesus,” you sat back in your seat. Through the window, the entire world seemed to blur as the train lurched away from the city. “What a fucking rollercoaster.”
“I have to go see him,” Arthur’s voice broke into your racing thoughts. “Talk to him face to face.”
“Of course,” you agreed. “Go to his house and confront him. It’s the only way to get to the bottom of this. ”
You’d been to Wayne Manor only once before: a field trip in the second grade at Burnley Elementary School. Over a decade later, all you recalled about the visit were the Waynes’ dobermans that barked at you and your classmates the entire time. Like you were intruders even though the Manor was a historical landmark with paid tours.
The Waynes were a piece of work.
“Come on,” you took Arthur’s hand as you exited the train station. There were no cabs around like in the Gotham, and the walk from the train station to Wayne Manor would take at least half an hour on foot.
Long Island was worlds apart from the city. Away from the endless, screeching roar of Gotham, you could actually hear yourself think.
You and Arthur made your way down the tree-lined roads. It was autumn and the leaves were beginning to turn gold and fall to the ground. You liked how Arthur made a point to always walk on the outside of the sidewalk, creating a buffer between yourself and the street. Maybe his mother was crazy, but there was no denying she had raised a gentleman.
Arthur seemed to relish holding your hand, the sound of dry leaves crunching beneath your feet.
“So what was that dream you had about me?” you asked playfully, giving his hand a light squeeze. You looked over to see his cheeks flush. His shy smile swept you off your feet.
“Oh,” Arthur gave a small laugh. “I dreamed you were onstage with me.”
“Doing your comedy act?” you giggled. “Like a singing, dancing comedic duo?”
“No,” Arthur shook his head. “I mean yes. Kind of. We were singing and dancing together. I was in my red suit and you were…”
He paused. You shot him a quizzical look.
“I was what?” you prodded.
“It’s embarrassing.”
“What was I, naked or something?”
“No,” he shook his head. His face was even cuter (if such a thing was possible) when it was all embarrassed and flushed.
“You were wearing your Snow White costume.”
Not the answer you’d expected. You let out a laugh.
“I guess that makes sense,” you conceded. “Given you’ve seen me in it at the children’s hospital.”
“It’s not just that,” Arthur confessed as you walked along. “It’s because…well, I didn’t tell you this at the time because I thought it would be weird. But Snow White was the first movie I ever saw in the movie theater.”
“That’s not so strange,” you replied. “It’s a classic, after all.”
“Well…she was also my first love. Snow White, I mean. I saw her up there on the screen and I fell in love with her.”
Now you were blushing. And as stupid as it was, you also felt a pang of jealousy course through you. Yes, you were jealous of a cartoon princess Arthur’d been infatuated with as a child. It was beyond ridiculous, but the truth was: hearing Arthur loved anyone besides you made your heart pound with envy. You just hoped he still didn’t have a thing for her.
“You know…” Arthur’s voice broke into your racing thoughts. “I hope this isn't weird of me to say, but…I'm honestly surprised you would ever be interested in someone like me.”
You stopped in your tracks. Was he trying to give you the brush off? Tell you he was still in love with a childhood celluloid dream? Your heart was jumping up and down, side to side. You couldn’t imagine going on without him in your life.
“What makes you say that?” you asked, measured tone and breath, trying specifically not to sound as psycho as you really felt.
Arthur shrugged. “I’m…older than you, I live with my mother. I have no money. And you…”
You wanted to protest everything he was saying, but reminded yourself to wait patiently for him to complete the thought.
“...you’re a college student.”
“I was a college student,” you corrected him.
“You deserve to live in a beautiful place like this,” Arthur said, gesturing at the verdant surroundings. “Someone who can give you that.”
“Are you breaking up with me?” you blurted. You could feel another episode coming on and as much as you trusted Arthur, you really didn’t want to lose it in front of him again. You especially didn’t want to lose it because he was dumping you. And on Long Island, no less. Crazy behavior was normal in Gotham, but here they’d have you arrested for so much as a shriek here.
“No!” he shook his head immediately. “Not at all. I just…don’t want you to feel like I’m keeping you from a better life. You know I have all these problems…”
You breathed a silent sigh of relief. He wasn’t breaking up with you. He was just concerned, thoughtful, putting your needs ahead of his.
It only made your feelings deepen for him even more.
“Does it bother you?” Arthur asked. “That I’m older than you?”
“No,” you replied. “Does it bother you? Have you ever been with someone younger?”
Arthur pulled a pack of cigarettes out of his pocket and shook one loose, bringing it to his mouth as he fished around his other pocket for a lighter.
“I haven’t really dated at all,” he said with an embarrassed wince. “I’m not someone most people would…ever be interested in.”
“That’s not true,” you said, still reeling from the shock that this beautiful, sweet, tender man had never dated. Though to be fair, knowing he’d loved anyone else would have triggered more jealousy. At the same time, you couldn’t wrap your head around how no one could see how amazing he was.
“I’ve never dated, either, Arthur,” you pointed out.
“But that makes sense. You're a lot younger than I am.”
You grinned slightly. “Have you been doing the math? How much?”
Arthur inhaled the first drag of his cigarette, and it billowed out into the clean Long Island air.
“You told me what year you graduated last night. If I’d stayed in school, I would have graduated in 1964. Which means I'm fifteen years older than you. It took me a second to do the math. That was never my strong subject. None of them were.”
You shook your head, then suddenly found yourself laughing. “Actually…”
Arthur looked up at you with big, worried eyes. “Yes?”
“I like that you’re older than me,” you confessed.
“You do?”
“Is that weird?” Now you felt a little embarrassed. You didn’t want Arthur to think you were a freak, but you were just being honest. “I don't like guys my age.”
“You didn't meet anyone you liked at school? I'd think lots of guys would be interested in you.”
“‘Interested’ is a relative term,” you scoffed bitterly. “The guys at Gotham U are…let's just say a lot of them are book smart. And come from rich families. But they act like fucking animals.”
Arthur frowned. “Animals? How do you mean?”
You shook your head. “I'll tell you about it some other time.”
Arthur nodded respectfully.
“The truth is, Arthur,” you continued. “I never liked anybody that way…until I met you.”
Arthur smiled at the ground as you plodded along in sync, then silently took your hand.
“I feel the same way about you,” he said. “When we’re together, it just…feels right.”
“I know,” you said, giving his hand a squeeze. “So many things in my life haven’t felt right…haven't been right. But this does. And if it feels right, nothing else matters.”

Summary: After some encouragement from Emily and Penelope, you try to explain your reaction to Reid at work. You were stupid, there was no other logical explanation for it. Staring at Emily on your doorstep as your brain stood there, slack-jawed and wide-eyed, trying to process the words she’d just said to you, there was really only one thing running through your brain.
“I’m a fucking dumbass.” you groaned, your hands coming up to your head as you pondered your next move.
“There’s no chance that you’ll believe this was all just one practical joke that I’ve been playing to test how quickly you could turn up at my place with wine?” You looked up hopefully at Emily, and she returned with a concerned look of her own, that silently communicated ‘No, I wasn’t born yesterday.’

“You promise not to tell anyone? Penelope knows, and so does Rossi, but no one else does. Well maybe someone else but I don’t know who that someone is - long story.” You rambled, still aware of the promise you’d made with Spencer, and knowing that you’d actually broken it twice now.
“Scouts honor, now get on with it.”

“A drink might get you married though.” You glared at her at the interruption, and she held her hands up in surrender as you continued.

Again, another long story.” You let your words sink in as you realize the tangled mess you’d spun for yourself in the last week.
“We spent some time researching our options on Saturday night, to see if we could get our memories to come back and I might not have left until a couple hours ago?”
“Y/N! You’ve been banging Reid for the last three days?”

“Define not reacting well,” Emily probed further.
“I pushed him away and slammed the door in his face. “No! No, this is salvageable! You just have to… be brave?” Penelope didn’t seem to believe her own words as you pulled your phone back and poured yourself another glass, ready to drown your sorrows once again. Emily was a little more confident.
“Okay. Here’s what you do. I’m going to talk to Rossi for you tomorrow morning at work, get him to hold off on his big reveal while you go and explain everything to Spencer. How does that sound?”
“That sounds doable, I guess.” You sniffled a little, rereading the text having made your emotions jump back up to the surface again as you fought off tears.

Then at 9 sharp the elevator doors opened, and from your seat at your desk, you watched him step out, feeling your tongue grow thick and your heart beat faster as he made his way into the office. You took a deep breath and walked closer to him as he continued making his coffee, again refusing to look you in the eyes as he continued as normal.

“Y/N, why are you avoiding me?” He’d caught you alone in the hotel lobby, pulling you into a dark corner without much foot traffic to confront you. “Is it because of the kiss? Because the way you talked about getting your memories back the other day made me think we were okay about that again, but if we’re not then I’m sorry I made you uncomfortable.”

Stefan had been on the run for three days, he was wanted, and it was beginning to tear on him - always being on guard, always keep moving, always trying to stay three moves ahead. When he received a phone call from his companion, Filip, he began to feel hopeful. After a few minutes of talking, Filip asked him; ”do you trust me?”
- “Yes,” Stefan replied tonelessly.
- “Okay, then meet me at the old brickworks tomorrow morning. Until then, keep a low profile.”
- “What do you think I’ve been doing?” Stefan snarled only to discover that Filip already hung up. The old brickworks was located several towns over, but Stefan knew where it was, it closed years ago, the buildings and ground abandoned and falling into disrepair. A good hiding spot, if a tad obvious. Nevertheless he needed to make his way there, unseen.
It was a cold night, but Stefan survived, he just had to wait till daybreak, then hopefully Filip would come to his aid. As dawn broke, Stefan began to scout from his hiding spot every now and then, he just needed Filip to turn up. He wouldn’t risk calling him again, all he could do was wait.
In the distance Stefan heard an engine or possibly two approaching the quiet grounds. Then the noise disappeared, he assumed that was Filip, who had come to his rescue. From his cover Stefan tried to scout to see, who had come to this dump. But it wasn’t Filip.
It was a police officer, and he was looking directly at Stefan. Stefan froze, he couldn’t move, he realised that Filip had betrayed him, handed him over to the police. The police officer approached him, Stefan got up not breaking eye-contact. Now was the ’fight-or-flight’-moment, but before even considering his options, the officer stood only a few meters from him and had taken off his helmet, and with a firm voice he said: “You are under arrest, we have the area surrounded. You might as well come along willingly.” This was the end.
The police officer then burst into laughter, and Stefan was as confused as he was dumbstruck. “Stefan, it’s me, Filip,” the officer laughed at Stefan’s shocked face. “Filip? But how-” before Stefan could finish the sentence, the officer raised his hand to his head. With the hand he pushed his forehead backwards causing the officer’s face to distort as his mouth widened grotesquely as another head emerged from the gaping maw.
”It really is you?!” Stefan exclaimed, he was astonished, seeing him here, in a genuine police uniform and what appeared to be an ultra-realistic mask flopping around his neck.
“Sure is,” Filip grinned, enjoying the look of utter disbelief on Stefan’s face, “but when I’m wearing this, I go by the name of Officer Marcel Kowalski.”
“I have a colleague, who is very eager to meet you, waiting outside,” Filip continued, smirking and winked as they walked towards the road.
“You got a disguise for me too?” Stefan asked, believing he had guessed what Filip meant with that remark.
“Of course, I told you to trust me, I originally thought of giving you Kowalski here, but then I decided to make another for you.”
Make another? Stefan wondered.
“It’s a long story, I’ll tell you later. Right now we got to go back to the station,” Filip said and pulled Kowalski’s face back over his own, bringing the officer back to life.
“The station!?” Stefan exclaimed.
“Calm down, nobody is going to recognise you, not when you’re Officer Tomasz Kubik,” ‘Kowalski’ explained with his authoritative voice. Once outside the brickworks, ‘Kowalski’ pointed towards two police motorcycles parked by the road.
There was another police officer, or at least something, that used to be one. Tomasz Kubik laid across his motorcycle like a deflated balloon, his head seemingly squashed under the weight of the helmet. Stefan looked from Kowalski to the skinned man on the motorcycle with undeniable fascination.
- “So you want me to become a cop?”
- “For the time being... You know you want this.”

‘Kowalski’ threw some of Kubik’s clothes to his friend, then he walked over to the pile of Stefan’s discarded clothes, emptying the pockets, folding them neatly, before igniting them with a lighter. Stefan saw his old clothes and life burn, but he didn’t care, he wanted this more.
With great enthusiasm Stefan began to pull on Kubik’s uniform, he couldn’t believe how much he wanted this. He pulled on Kubik’s leather pants, threw on his thick police leather jacket, and stepped into the officer's heavy motorcycle boots and secured his belt around his waist. It was a perfect fit. Stefan was now Officer Tomasz Kubik and Filip, Officer Marcel Kowalski.
Kowalski disposed of the remains of the burnt clothes, whilst the new Kubik admired his face on his motorcycle’s side-view mirror. He certainly looked good in uniform. Kowalski returned and the two leather-clad ’officers’ mounted their bikes.
”Remember, we are law-abiding citizens for the time being.” said 'officer Kowalski' jokingly.
”Actually we are law-enforcing citizens,” 'officer Kubik' replied with a devilish grin.
Hiding right under the police’s nose might be his best option for now, it might even be fun, but one thing was for sure, Stefan didn’t mind having ’police on his back’ for the time being.

This post contains both prologue and chapter 1! Also, I'll try to make Y/N as gender neutral as I can!

Prologue

Once upon a time, in the heart of Japan, on the outskirts of Yoshiwara, there was a castle. In this very castle, there once was a prince. A prince with a heart so cold, cruel and petty that people’s faces twisted with disgust and fear even by hearing his name. He taxed the district that was under his rule; so he could fill his castle with only the most beautiful, expensive objects and to have only beautiful and high-ranking guests at extravagant parties he threw.
But one night, a ‘doctor’ with her assistant entered the castle; looking for shelter from the ruthless storm and bitter cold outside. In exchange for help, the doctor wanted to offer the prince a single red rose. The prince wanted to turn them away immediately, ignoring the gift, blinded by his own bitterness, but the woman warned him not to be so quick and act without thinking about his actions first. When the prince wanted to turn to violence instead, the woman revealed herself, surprisingly due to her calm nature, as a powerful demonic being. Seeing that there was no love nor compassion in the prince’s heart, she and her assistant transformed the prince into a literal demon, casting a powerful spell on the castle and all those who lived there.
The rose; a gift from the mysterious Lady, would bloom until the prince’s 26th birthday. If he could learn to love another and forget about his violent ways until the last petal of the flower fell, the spell would be broken. If not; he would be doomed to remain a bloodthirsty monster for all eternity.
Days bled into years, and the prince and his servants were forgotten by the world... The powerful castle, claimed by the deep, snowy forest around it, became cut off from the rest of the world. With every passing day, the prince fell into despair and lost all of his hope.
For who could ever learn to love a beast?

Chapter 1: One single rose

”Good morning!”
There was silence for a moment, before at least ten different voices repeated the greeting. Little town, a small, quiet village; every day was like the one before. People rushed to the market, buying eggs, rice and vegetables. Merchants walked through the main streets, selling coal, wood, fabrics or such. Children played around, running, singing songs or fighting each other with long sticks, pretending to be mighty warriors. Your basket was slowly filled up with groceries; fish, fruit, vegetables. There was the merchant with his rice as always, the same old things to sell. Every day was just the same, since the day that you and your father came to this small, safe town. People talked, laughed, or even gossiped. Every second, a new voice was audible in the crowd.
“Ah, good morning there! ” A sweet voice called to you before a sweet maiden came over.
“Good morning. Miss Koyuki! Have you lost something again?” You called back with a smile as the girl approached.
“I’m not sure…oh well, I’ll hopefully find it one day. Where are you off to?” She asked with a sweet smile, looking over at you with those big, warm eyes.
“I’m going home…with a new book; it’s about two lovers who lived in the west”
“Sounds so sweet! Hm— I feel like I'm missing something again, forgive me!” Koyuki answered before waving goodbye and going back to her own problems. It was always like this, something seemed to escape her mind every time you saw that sweet damsel. As if something was there once, but then suddenly disappeared.
It was another day, like dozens of other days here. The same people, same routine and same town over and over again. You were never a permanent part of any crowd, maybe because sometimes your head was stuck on some cloud, and people saw you as the funny one. Father said that it was safe, that it was good, that it was just how things were everywhere. But how can this be compared to all the stories you saw written on paper? Brave warriors, beautiful women, curses, battles, monsters and so much more were right there, in the books you managed to collect over the years. Even if it wasn’t much, it had to do. How many times have you dreamt of leaving this place, of just seeking something more out there? This place wasn’t bad of course, but you had a feeling, a small voice inside your head was telling you that something way greater was waiting out there just to be discovered, seen, understood. There had to be more than this simple life.
You seemed so peculiar to all those around you, like a puzzle to be solved, but all those things could just fade away when a book was opened by you. Oh, it was so amazing. And this exact book had your favorite part in it; the one where the protagonist meets their prince charming, but they don’t discover that it’s him until chapter 6.
The town lived its own life, but there was one person focused on you at that moment. Kaigaku. His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked in your direction after finishing his spare with Zenitsu.
“Look there, my future spouse. They're the fairest of them all in this little shithole. When I become a great samurai, they will be right at my side, all sweet and all.”
Kaigaku hummed before tossing the wooden katana away, before Zenitsu picked it up.
“True, but they're more into— you know. Doesn't grandpa say it's good to share interests?”
Zenitsu answered meekly before looking up at Kaigaku while they both stared at you passing through the market.
“I don't really care, but I feel like I'm missing something…and they give me this thrill”
Kaigaku hummed before walking towards the market as Zenitsu followed along. From the moment Kaigaku met you, saw you, he thought you're gorgeous and he fell. So he had been making plans to woo and marry you for a while now. It was like chasing something so rare and unobtainable, it always gave him those chills that he slowly grew to like more and more.
You slowly moved through the streets, looking into one of the books belonging to you, moving towards your house.
In the exact same moment, a hand snatched the book out of your hands. A familiar face showed up with a small grin on his lips. Kaigaku. And Zenitsu not far away from him, of course. Their master, or rather ’Gramps’, as they both called him, really wanted them to get along, so they were spending a lot of time together. Even when Kaigaku showed clear displeasure in that.
“I thought we lost you there for a second. How can you read this crap, there are no pictures at all… I thought they’re making books more interesting now, but this is just disappointing. Absolutely nothing to focus your eye on. Funny how you can even read all this...”
He muttered before the book came back into your hands. Funny; that’s your role around here. You seemed to be the only person who wasn’t able to get used to the very boring reality. People thought you were daydreaming too much, it was harmless of course, but there was always an excuse that there were more important things to do instead.
“Well, I guess you could always use your imagination when reading a book” You answered before Kaigaku raised his eyebrows and huffed softly
“Well, it’s a waste of time anyway, I focused just on my training and the world around me, and I’m turning out just fine.”
He answered before making an angry face as Zenitsu was about to say something in protest. The yellow haired boy then looked away, not bothering to say anything, clearly intimidated by Kaigaku and the possibility of getting punched for saying anything.
“Well, I was thinking that you could come, watch me train, maybe I’d inspire you like I did to many other people already...” Kaigaku added with a smug look on his face, trying to show off.
“I’m afraid I can’t, I’m sorry.”You answered, getting ready to leave, yet his hand stopped you.
“You’re busy?”He asked quickly before you yanked your hand away and moved away.
“No, not really.”
Those were the last words leaving your lips before you walked away. Zenitsu just waved you goodbye before Kaigaku scowled at him and punched him on the arm, making Zenitsu whine in slight pain afterwards.

The door opened quietly as you walked into your house. A soft sound of tools being used while soft muttering started being audible as well.
“Hello, father.” You said softly, gently putting the grocery basket next to the door. As you stepped out of your geta, your father turned towards you, noticing that you entered due to the door leading into his working room being open.
“Welcome back— uh…could you pass me the…” The old man didn't get to finish before you passed him the right tool and he immediately started working. With western culture slowly entering Japan, many new items became popular, like music boxes. You felt lucky that your father quickly picked up on making simple and then complicated mechanisms, and soon enough began creating music boxes, just like those from the western countries! Maybe one day he would sell enough and that would help in getting a new house in a new place where something new could be already waiting for you? Who knows…
While father was working, you wandered off into the kitchen, taking out some of the groceries you got from the market. The sounds of water boiling soon enough filled the room as breakfast was being prepared. Miso soup was poured into two bowls, steamed rice was put into others as you chopped down some veggies and fried some eggs into tamagoyaki.
Once you sat down by the table, father joined you as you both ate. The old man swallowed his meal rather quickly, but how can you blame him? Your dear father was a busy man who constantly worked to try and make your lives better. He was really passionate about assembling his music boxes and other gizmos he produced in his room all day. That's how it just was, just you and your father trying to reach out for the stars.

“Is it the last one?” You asked as your father carefully packed the finished music box. As it joined the others, also beautifully packed, your father nodded, slowly turning to face you.
“Let's hope I can sell those to very wealthy people. Next time, maybe I'll take you to sell the music boxes with me? You've always wanted to see some new places, so once I figure out where to sell my creations, we'll be able to go together.” Your father smiled, slowly walking towards the cart outside to put his creations inside it.
“Are you sure you can pull this cart all on your own?” You asked, slowly leaving the house alongside your father as he prepared for his journey.
“Of course. I'm not that old! I'll manage, I can work on my own just fine.” The old man answered with a smile as he finally got ready.
“I'll be passing through bigger towns and districts, would you like me to bring you something? Maybe a fan, or a new haori…perhaps a whole new kimono if I find one with a nice price.” Your father chuckled, waiting for your answer.
“Oh, that's too much. I don't need anything right now so…I just wish for a safe journey for you. As for any souvenirs— a single rise will do, really.” You answered, feeling the soft rays of sun hitting your and your father's faces.
“A single rise? Oh well, I can't argue with you about it, especially if you truly want it, even if it's so little.”He answered, chuckling quietly once more, before starting to walk down the path that would lead him out of the village.
You waved your father goodbye, hoping his journey would be safe and that he would hit the market with his handmade music boxes. With this on your mind, you couldn't help but wish that everything would go as planned, that your dear father would earn as much money as possible and that your life could perhaps change for the better? There had to be something waiting for you in the great, wide somewhere. Something was waiting, yearning, screaming to be seen. Hidden away deep in the darkness just to be discovered. When you couldn't see your father anymore, you just peacefully walked back into the house. There were still some things to be managed, and once father returns, he'll be happy to see everything done. Once father returns, everything can get only better, right? Father will return, and everything will be good, wonderful even.

Summary: [Max and reader crossed the line in their 3 year friendship, resulting in 2 positive pregnancy test. And 1 baby on the way.]
Lando is somewhat forgiven- but before going out on track reader had a bad feeling- leaving Maxin a bad situation. Reader worries for him and makes a crazy choice to nurse him back to health.

“Is Max still angry at me?…” sitting down next to me Lando sipped at his tea.
“I would say livid still.” Glancing over at Lando I then also took a sip of tea. “I’m also still very angry at you.”
“I don’t know how many times I have to apologise…”
Humming a silence grew between us both.
“At least you and Max didn’t have to do the reveal?” Smiling a little at me, I rolled my head to the side glaring at him.
“We didn’t want them knowing at all.”
“But-”
“We wanted it on our terms.”
“But-”
“And I wanted a stress free pregnancy but I doubt it’s ever going to be calm.”
“But-”
“will you stop saying but.”
“I have something to say.”
“What have you got to say?”
“You haven’t got to hide anymore… isn’t that a good thing?” Raising his eyebrows at me like he thought of a brilliant idea.
“I wouldn’t have had to hide anyways Lando. The whole world didn’t need to know he was Max’s, there’s a lot of pressure on him at the moment, with all the-” pausing I furrowed my brows feeling the aching sensation creeping up to my head.
“The um…” breathing in and out slowly I tried easing the pain, “You okay?” Worry was plastered on his face. “Want me to get Max?”
“I’m okay… just keep getting these horrible headaches…” sighing I rubbed my temple, Lando reaching over resting his hand on my shoulder in a comforting manner. “I’ll go get him, okay?”
“He might strangle you” breathing out a little laugh I rested my palm against my forehead like I was trying to hold it together.
“I’ll take the chance-” smiling he quickly got up running off- yelling Max along the way, I decided to make my way towards the red bull garage praying that moving around will console the pounding sensation.
But it wasn’t long before I was sitting down again, the need for Max growing quickly- to the point I was on the urge of tears.
Over the summer break, spending time with Max day in day out. I felt an attachment to him, or maybe Milo knew he was always around- and now? When he is not? I get extremely anxious- worried if his okay. Which then causes stress because of the worry, which then brings on these lovely headaches.
And weirdly enough as soon as I see Max everything wrong with me disappears, it’s like Milo knows max is there and everything’s going to be okay.
Sighing once again, I took a seat ontop of some Ferrari storage boxes, waving a hand infront of my face. I felt like I was overheating- exactly like when I returned home and see Max for the first time. I was hot- too hot.
“Hey Y/N- you okay?” Glancing up I see a very concerned looking Charles. “Oh yeah I’m fine-”
“You’re not your face is really red- here…” holding his bottle of water out he looked around him. “I just got it don’t worry-”
Humming I quickly took the water gulping nearly half of it down. “Thank you…”
“Want me to get Max?” I shook my head looking around. “It’s okay Lando is finding him.”
“Yeah… I better go look. I doubt Lando and Max together is a good idea.” Smiling a little at Charles, he then held his finger up before running off, coming back with a booklet and fanning it in front of my face.
“Y/N- what’s the matter?” Worry was plastered on Carlos face, now joining in with Charles and fanning me down with whatever he had in hand. “Just this pregnancy kicking my ass.” They both laughed quietly, Charles then quickly pulled his phone out.
“Want me to call for paramedics?” I shook my head knowing as soon as I see Max in view I’ll be a-ok.
“I’ll call Max.” Nodding my head an apologetic smile on my face. “I’m so sorry-”
Hushing me Carlos then started rubbing my back. “Don’t apologise. You’d do the same for us.”
Tilting my head at him with a small smile, he then rolled his eyes. “You know what I mean- if we were sick… not like if we got pregnant… if I was ill-” laughing a little I nodded my head “I get it Carlos. And you’re correct.”
After a few more minutes, I found now I was getting hotter by the moment, and my worry was through the roof- is Max okay? Why couldn’t they find him? Charles has tried his phone multiple times… Lando has been gone a while.
I looked down at my feet kicking them back and forth trying to distract my brain, both the Ferrari boys doing everything they can to soothe myself back from overdrive.
“Schat?” (Darling?) Looking up quickly, I see Max breathing heavily Lando two steps behind him,
“I told you-” Max was quick to hush Lando- falling to his knees in front of me “What’s the matter?” Furrowing his eyebrows, his eyes scanned over me looking for any visible injury’s- but apart from the flushed face and fidgeting fingers I looked somewhat okay.
“I just got one of them horrible headaches…” at the mention of my head he stood back up hands out and massaging my head, by then I was zoned out, like an instinct I rested my head against his abdomen closing my eyes.
“Thank you both.” Max looked between both Ferrari boys who only nodded their heads and patted him on the back- both making their way to their garage.
“What about me?- I come and got you…”
“Lan- I’m still pissed off the world knows Y/N is having my baby. Look at the stress it’s fucking causing.”
“I didn’t mean to! How many times have I got to apologise?”
“It’s not an apology that makes it better.”
“But I can’t do anything else to make it better.”
“Then don’t keep trying to-”
Leaning my head back I looked between them both. “Will you both shut up.”
I got up from the Ferrari ‘seating’ shoving Max’s hand away from my hip. “You both bickering every time we’re together is driving me insane.” Wincing at the pain shooting through me, I quickly reached up clasping the front of my head. “You need to-” glaring at Max I held a finger to my lips shushing him.
Looking over at Lando. “No Lando, at the moment you cant make it better- yes we are annoyed! We specifically asked for no social media- and you done exactly that.” Lando’s head ducked, glancing over at Max every so often. “And while I’m speaking to you right now- stop texting me every night asking me if Charles is Milos favourite- cause strangely enough I don’t know and at this point I don’t think Milo knows either.”
Turning my head around to Max the little smile falling from his face. “And you. What Lando done- yes it wasn’t fair, but you realise that twisting his arm every time you see him only brings more shit onto me, I get your angry but we can’t do anything about it now. He came and got you today when I was having a moment- clearly he was willing to risk an arm amputation for the well-being of your child.” Raising my eyebrows at Max I then moved around him before glancing between them both.
“I’m sick to death of the petty bickering… I’m sorry Lan okay? But you have got to understand how I’m feeling- that was our moment…” Nodding his head he leaned in kissing my temple. “I really am sorry… just for everything.” Waving him off I turned to Max once again.
“And Max. Answer your phone for the love of god- I know I shouldn’t rely on you to make me feel better- but unfortunately Milo does. It’s like he knows your away to long and wants to upset me for it.” smiling down at me he instantly turned to putty- pulling me into a tight embrace. “I’m sorry schat.” (Darling)
“Now both of you get to your garages and show Milo a good race.” Max took my hand in his and with slow pace moved us to the red bull garage. “Drive safe Lan- please.” Looking over my shoulder at him, he smiled happily.

“Max-” turning around he lifted his visor up looking at me. “You okay?” I paused judging what I was feeling before slowly nodding my head. “Just be careful…”
“I’m always careful.” The corners of his eyes creased as he moved closer to me adjusting his gloves. “I just- something feels off.” Looking around I tired ‘sensing out’ what was odd. “Milo?” He curled his hand brushing his knuckles over my belly making a small smile creep to my face. “No he is ok. Just-”
“Be careful” raising his eyebrows, his hand moved to the back of my head pulling me in and pressing a delicate kiss on top of my head. “Promise.” Taking his word I took a step away and allowing him to get out on track.
Maybe we have grown fairly close- but it’s all just for Milo’s sake.

Looking up at the sky frowning, I looked out across the pit wall and at Max.
Something still felt wrong… maybe a change in weather? Or the way that Max was very fidgety- like he had the same gut wrenching feeling about today’s race.
All I know is it sure as hell didn’t feel right.
Sighing I moved away from the wall heading back into pits, and by Max’s demand and engineer following close behind me making sure I was okay. I sure as hell wasn’t but I can’t stop an entire race because I have a bad feeling.
“You okay Y/N?” Nodding my head with a small smile, I then chucked on a headset looking up at the screens. Come on Max.
Zoned out I was barely paying attention but it wasn’t before long I was having to use the bathroom once again.
Sliding the headset back off I turned to the engineer who was getting their stuff ready. “I’m just going to the bathroom…” nodding they assisted me to the doors, and I ensured them they needed to be there for the race I wouldn’t be too long.

The race had already started by the time I waited around for the toilet and got back, however when I entered the Red Bull garage everyone was frantic. I stood well in the far back making sure I wasn’t in the way.
“Y/N! You okay?” Christian came rushing over with his hands outstretched. “I think so- what’s going on?” Brows furrowed I glanced around before looking up at the tv screen, Max wasn’t on the score board anymore… gulping I moved around past Horner, eyes glued to the screen.
And I waited, breath stuck in my throat. My stomach churning… to ease the sensation I placed my palm flat against it. Reassuring Milo in my eyes that his dad was okay.
That was before the replay showed, Max car collided with another’s wheel sending him doing 360 spins off the track- sucking in a breath I prayed that was it…
Then the car flipped.
And flipped.
Leaving him upside down in the gravel, not budging at all, and then the screen repeated it again this time in slow motion.
And again now zoomed in more on Max…
I could only sit there and think- I should’ve told him the battle wasn’t worth it… I should’ve told him a lot of unspoken words.
He wasn’t out the car yet, red flag being sent out and all the cars re entering pits…
My stomach just kept churning. Why haven’t they got him out yet?
A pair of hands rested on my shoulders, Christian consistently reassuring me he was going to be okay. But the words of encouragement fell on deaf ears.
He wasn’t okay- he wasn’t out the car.
“Has he spoken yet?” Turning around to Christian he looked over to the control panel gently pulling me over with him.
“Heard anything from Max?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Try him again.” Bringing my fingers to my lips I tried stopping them from quivering.
“Max? Need a confirmation mate that your okay…”
They looked over at me shaking their head, we was all worrying- yet they was hiding it a lot better…
Me? Tears were already on my cheeks- I knew something was off… and he knew it- I know he knew. I watched the small screens as the marshals were trying to tip the car back over- or at least get to Max somehow.
“Try him again.”
“Y/N-"
“Again.” Nodding his head Christian then took the headset trying it himself.
“Max, we got Y/N here mate. We all want to know you’re okay.” Holding his hands over the headset trying to block any noise.
Christians eyes shot up and he looked over at me nodding. My hand clasped over my chest, sighing gratefully. “You gave us quite the scare there-” laughing a little into the mic you could see it on Christian’s face the relief.
“Just stay still Max they’re gonna get you out okay?” I moved away from them walking back to the garage, now playing the waiting game.
They still had Max on screen, sliding a headset on I listened in hands clasped in a praying motion infront of me.
“I think I’ve done my collarbone…” his voice was rough- but it was Max and I silently thanked the heavens I was hearing him.
“Just stay still.”
“Fuck-” groaning again- it then cut off. And we all waited.
And waited.
And waited.
Until finally he was out, on a stretcher and sent straight off to medical. One of the team offered to take me there, and before I know it we was both rushing through the place to find him.
“Is Max okay?” The nurse nodded her head coming over to us both. “Slightly concussed, he was knocked out for a few minutes… and the pain in his collarbone is because he has fractured it. But other than that he should be okay.”
“How long does a collarbone take to recover?”
“About 4-6 weeks”
“What about racing?”
“Well he simply can’t race until his recovered.”
“Can I see him…?” Nodding her head she motioned towards the door. “His still a bit out of it, also the tablets might be kicking in now so he may not say much.” Smiling I thanked her before knocking the door gently.
“Max…” sliding through the door I looked over at him, and truthfully he looked tired. Exhausted in fact like he hasn’t slept in months.
“You look awful.” Scrunching my nose up, I sat down beside him. “I’d get out of here if I could.” Smiling I rolled my eyes at him. “I’m honestly fine. I don’t know why I’ve got to stay here any longer.”
“You are still concussed Max.” Leaning on the edge of the bed I looked up at him, chin resting on my hand.
“How you feeling though?” Sighing he rolled his head over looking at me. “Like I hit a brick wall truthfully.” Chuckling more to himself, but it only caused me to frown.
“You okay?” He reached his hand over brushing my arm. “You look tired…”
Humming he closed his eyes “I feel it.”
Then silence fell upon us, I was watching his chest rise and fall softly, he looked so peaceful… this only gave me flashbacks of the nights we shared. The aftermath we would lay in silence taking each other in, and each time I’d swear to never go back… and I always did because it’s Max.

Humming in response, he brushed my arm again letting me know he was listening.
“You know that collarbones got to heal right…”
Humming again, sleep nearly taking over him, “are you going back home to recover?”
“Yeah.”
“Can I come with you?” My face felt warm as I looked over at his face, his eyes cracked open, a small smile creeping onto his face. “You want to look after me?”
“Just a little bit.”
“I guess you can tag along.” Scoffing I shoved his hand away. “Tag along huh?” Laughing with me we both fell silent again. “Get some rest Max.” Closing his eyes again he got comfortable. “I’m sorry for stressing you.”
Taking his hand in mine I brought it to my cheek, holding it close. “It wouldn’t be normal if you didn’t bring me worry.”
“I’ll try not to bring anymore I promise.”
“You can still bring a little fun, just not crashing your car next time huh.” My thumb brushed over his knuckles softly.
“Again I’ll try.”
“All I can ask.”

One can only take so much… before they break
(Alex Morgan X OC)
Hi, yes i know i’ve been away for a very long time, but I wanted to give this writing thing another shot to see if I still had anything left in the tank. Hopefully this isn’t the most dreadful thing you’ve ever read. So sorry if it is. Please be advised this one deals with some very strong emotions and topics. Implied mental abuse, Suicidal ideation and just overall sadness and anxiety. This will be a multi parter as my fingers got away from me lol.
This one is 99% Alex x OC, although the character’s name is never dropped as I wasn’t sure if I was going to make this an x reader fic or not. If anyone has any name suggestions at the end I’m all ears. And future parts will definitely be more USWNT x OC

Everything is your fault. It always is. Why can’t you do anything right?! It all fell apart because of you! You know that, and so do they. They hate you for it. Your own mother won’t even talk to you.
“Hey, kid… Kid?…Dude!” I was so lost in thought I didn’t even hear one of my teammates calling out to me.
“Huh? What?” I looked up to see Alex looking down at me worriedly.
“Are you okay little duck?” She said squatting down so she was eye level with me. She put her hand on my cheek rubbing it softly raising an eyebrow when i didn’t say anything immediately.
“Hmm? Oh yeah, I’m fine.” I said softly, making a poor attempt at a smile but I’m fairly certain it came across as a grimace instead. I looked down and refused to look back up even though I could feel Alex trying to get me to look at her.
“Hey… what is it?” She said moving her head so she could look into my eyes, which at this point were watering and I was doing my very best to force the tears away.
“I-It’s nothing… I-I’m fine.” I said, my voice breaking. I brought my hand up to rub my eyes and I stood up and tried to make a quick get away, but Alex wasn’t having it.
“Stop, what’s going on? What’s wrong?” She put her hands on my shoulders to try and stop me from leaving but I pushed her off and started to walk away.
“I said I’m fine, just drop it Alex. Please.” I gave up trying to stop the tears, they were freely flowing now and i let out a sob as I broke into a full sprint when I heard her starting to follow me, calling out to me. I ran passed several of our fellow national team, teammates who were watching everything unfold.
I beat her to the locker room, grabbed my stuff and made a mad dash to my car, getting in and attempting to regulate my breathing. The tears were still coming in full force, sobs racked my body as I tried and failed to calm myself down. How pathetic is this? Crying like a big baby, because your mommy made you sad? I really am weak aren’t I? No that’s not true. The girls always tell me I’m strong and that I’m their brave big girl. Yeah it’s a bit baby-ish but it gets the point across. I wrestled with my own thoughts and was so engrossed in arguing with myself that i didn’t even realize I made it back to my apartment already. I also didn’t hear my phone ringing incessantly while I drove. I hesitated a bit seeing as it was Alex, probably trying to figure out where i went. It almost went to voicemail before i decided to answer.
“Hello” my voice was raw from all the crying I did, but I sounded more tired than distraught now.
“Baby, where did you go? What happened back there? Why did you run away? Please talk to me. I’m worried about you.” She said all in one breath, I bit my lip contemplating my answer. Then i took a deep breath and decided to just bite the bullet and be at least partially truthful.
“I… um, I was going thru a-a lot during the break between camps, I mean I guess I still am going thru a lot right now, given my very apparent meltdown earlier. I-I’m sorry Alex, I’m so sorry. Please forgive me. I won’t do it again, I swear.” My damn voice started breaking again as the tears started back up.
“Hey, hey, hey… little one, please breathe, you’re okay. You have nothing to be sorry for. Take deep, slow breaths, in and out.” she said gently, guiding me thru some breathing exercises until my breathing was less erratic. “Can you tell me where you are please? I’m going to come get you and we’ll talk this through and maybe we can order a pizza and watch movies, what do you say?” She asked, I could tell she was trying to remain calm but I could hear her voice quiver just slightly. She was scared, and rightfully so, this isn’t the first time I’d run off and usually when i did, I became self destructive at worst and let myself rot in bed for a week at best.
“I’m at the apartment.” I said and she let out a sigh of relief on the other end of the line.
“Okay good. I’m on my way, be there in 10. Stay there, please.”
I took one last deep breath before I got out of the car and made my way inside. I intended to sit on the couch and wait for her to get home but then the more i thought about having to talk to Alex about what’s been going on the more anxious i became. I started pacing and started mumbling to myself about what i was going to say and how I was going to say it. I wanted to let Alex in but I knew if I wasn’t careful I would let her in too much and I wasn’t ready for that. Being 17 and all my ability to regulate my emotions and understand them wasn’t the best as I’m sure you’ve already figured out.
10 minutes went by quickly and Alex was there before i knew it. She quickly made her way inside and dropped her bag by the door, coming up to me and taking me by the shoulders again to get me to stop pacing.
“Stop, please. You’re spiraling, what’s going on?”
“I just have a lot on my mind.”
“Like what? Is it your family? Soccer?”
“Family.” I mumbled, attempting to yank myself out of her grasp but she just wrapped her arms around my torso tightly so i couldn’t run away. “Let go Alex I can’t do this. Please let go.” I kept fighting against her hold but she wasn’t relenting, and while i would’ve denied it in the moment, I needed that.
“Shh, shh bub, just relax. I’ve got you. I’m here now it’s all gonna be okay, okay? I promise. Please just let me help you.” She said softly and I finally just allowed her to fully pull me against her chest, she relaxed her grip just slightly moving one of her hands to the back of my head, stroking my hair softly, resting her chin on the top of my head. “You’re okay, you’re safe now.” She whispered, and she continued to mumble reassurances to me as she rocked me in her arms slightly.
“Do we have to talk about this?” I mumbled.
“Yeah kid unfortunately we do. You know the rules when you decide to run away like you did earlier.” She kissed my head before picking me up with ease and moving us to the couch. She kept her hold on me and let me curl up into her lap, I tucked my head in the crook of her neck.
“I don’t want to.” I attempted to say firmly but it came out as a whine.
“Remember what I said? It’ll all be okay. I know this is scary but I’m not going anywhere and anything you tell me isn’t going to scare me away. I promise you. You’re my brave big girl, hmm?”
“I’m 17, you know?” I said in an attempt to seem tough.
“And that’s why i said you’re a big girl. But you’re still the baby on the team and little one to me.” She said chuckling softly. “You can do this.” she said after a moment rubbing my arm gently.
“I can do this.” I repeated to myself. I moved myself out of the safety of Alex’s arms slightly, putting some distance between us and turning to fully face her, steeling myself for the tough conversation ahead. I’m a very sensitive and emotional person so these conversations always make me cry no matter how much I try to stop it.
Do you want me to call the rest of the girls? Is this something they should know about too?”
“Too many people. Not ready, I think it’s better if I tell you everything first and then maybe only tell them the gist of it after.”
“Okay, then that’s what we’ll do. Whenever you’re ready.”
“I guess I’ll start at the beginning. So you know how in between camps and during off season I go home to be with my family? Well I went and everything fell apart, and it’s all my fault. Just like everything always is.”
“Hey, no don’t say that.” She cut me off, she hates when i am self deprecating.
“Its true though. I fucked everything up. You know how my brother and I work at the same place right? Well and you know how my shift is closing? So I work 1-10pm? Which my mom hates.” She nodded her head as I was talking to let me know she was following along. “Well one night it was bad… The weather was horrendous because in my hometown we get a lot of snow. A-and so one of the days I worked I was one of the f-few people to show up and, when everything was all said and done there was a huge mess left behind from the disaster of a day we had….” I was beginning to become emotional just thinking about what had happened that night, and i hated that it still made me feel such strong emotions.
“It’s okay, do you want to keep going?” Alex asked me softly, stroking the back of my head softly. she knew sometimes that talking about things was hard for me and that i needed to take breaks in order to get the whole story out.
“Yes i need to. I can do it.” I said determinedly. Blinking away the tears.
“Anyways, it was a mess and being a “Back up Team lead” sometimes i made a decision to send everyone else home and clean up. And since my brother worked on overnights I called him and asked him to come help me clean up so that i could go home at a semi-reasonable time. He came over to help but when they wanted to send him back to his normal area he refused and he s-started arguing with his boss about how he was going to choose family over his job at the moment and they d-didn’t like that so they sent him home for the night, and he didn’t have a car so he called my mom to pick him up…” I stopped to catch my breath as i realize I hadn’t been breathing
“Shh, easy baby, nice, slow deep breaths, you’re doing so good.” She said. I hadn’t been looking at Alex very much this whole time but when I finally did I could see unshed tears in her eyes. I knew it was hard for her any time i was upset or emotional in a negative way. She gently wiped away the tears that made their way down my cheeks.
“My mom came to get him, and then she called me, and she was angry, she demanded I come home so I did and when I got there she told me she had a lot of opinions about what happened but she was just going to keep her mouth shut. She told me to get out of her sight so I did. She wouldn’t even look at me. Just like that I was transported back to when I was a little kid and she would get angry and she would just tell me she didn’t want to look at me. It felt like a knife to the chest. I didn’t understand what i did to upset her so much and I knew she wouldn’t tell me. All part of her “healing process.” I said bitterly.
“Fast forward to the next morning, I woke up to the news my brother had been fired. I called him to apologize and I asked him what our mom said to him and he said that she blames me for him getting fired. She said I should have known better. I knew how much he needed that job.” My hands were shaking and my breathing was ragged as I played with the strings of my hoodie.
“That wasn’t your fault, you have to know that.”
“Yes it was. It is. He hasn’t found a job since and he-he’s struggling again. You remember what happened last time he was struggling don’t you? I can’t do that again, I can’t! Everything he does, every decision he makes that’s not good is my fault. My mom wants me to be “an example” for him but he’s older! How fucking twisted is that?! Why are things never his fault?!” I yelled standing up suddenly startling Alex.
“Okay, okay let’s take a break hmm?” Alex stood up holding up her hands to show me she meant no harm.
“No! You don’t get it! Everything is my fault! My own mother thinks so! I know he’s struggling but can’t she see I’m struggling too?! ” I threw a plastic cup that was on the table across the room.
“Stop. Now. We don’t throw things when we’re upset, do you understand?” Alex said sternly.
My lip wobbled as I started crying again. “I’ve spent the last 4 years trying my very best to hold my family together through everything we’ve been thru. I got my brother the job working where i do and now I’m the reason he lost it. And now he and his girlfriend risk being homeless because she doesn’t have a job either. And if they lose their apartment they move back home with my mom, which means I’ll probably have to move back to be there with her because I can’t just leave her there by herself with them. It wouldn’t be fair. Which in turn means I’ll have to put my life on hold. The life I finally made for myself.”
I’m so tired of being emotional exhausted. I can’t keep doing this. I don’t even want to be alive anymore.”
“Woah, hold on… what do you mean by that?” Alex’s eyes widened as she processed what i said.
“I mean what I just said I don’t want to be alive anymore okay? I want the pain to stop. I need it to stop.”
The silence that followed was long and tense. I immediately regretted saying what i said. But realized i couldn’t walk it back. Alex finally took a deep breath and began speaking again.
“How long have you been feeling this way? Do you- Do you have a plan?” She asked quietly, her voice breaking as she did.
“No I don’t have a plan, I just sometimes think about how much easier it would be if I wasn’t here anymore. And sometimes I think about hurting myself but i haven’t acted on it. And i’ve been feeling this way since last year, when my mom and i got into that big blowout fight at Thanksgiving. You know she didn’t even want me moving out here? She’s never really let that fight go.” I laughed hollowly.
“Thank you for telling me, and being honest with me. I know that wasn’t easy. Why didn’t your mom want you to move out here?”
“She thinks you and the girls have too much of an influence over me. She thinks you guys are “changing” me. She threatened to force me to quit playing soccer all together.”
“What? Why didn’t you ever tell me any of this?”
“It didn’t seem relevant.”
“Didn’t seem relevant?! How’s that? If i had known that I would’ve just had you move out here permanently!”
“Alex…”
“No I’m serious! I understand you’re still 17 but you’re out of high school and you should be able to decide your own path.
“I’ve been trying, but the situation with my brother gives her more reason to say i should just quit playing.
Alex goes quietly again and I can tell she’s thinking. I can tell she’s angry. She has never really liked my mom and visa versa, their relationship is courteous at best.
“I think sometimes you forget that you’re still a kid. I know that you have had a lot put on your shoulders and that a lot is expected of you, but your brothers choices that night are not your fault and I’m sorry he’s having a hard time and he might have to move back home, which yes will be hard for your mom but that doesn’t mean that you have to give up your life for them. They will be okay. I promise you.”
“You don’t know that.”
“Yes i do, you wanna know how I know?” She said and I nodded meekly.
“I know because your brother is strong, and so is your mom. And while i’ve never met her I’m sure his girlfriend is too. You don’t have to hold anyone else up but yourself. Not anymore. Their emotions and their… predicaments are not yours to try and fix. i don’t want you going home for a while okay? It’s clear that it’s taking a toll on you and to be frank, This is your home. Here with me, With the other girls. We have you okay? And we will never leave you. Ever.”
I turned away from her and tried to calm myself completely. I was so over all the crying and I bet you are too.
“You’re probably so sick of me crying.” I said chuckling quietly. Alex Vehemently shook her head and wrapped her arms around me, kissing my head.
“Not at all, you needed to get it out. it’s never good to hold it all in like you did, you know that.”
“I know, I just…”
“Have a hard time letting yourself be vulnerable. I know love. I know. So here’s what we’re going to do. I think writing your thoughts out might help what do you think?”
“Maybe…” i said hesitantly.
“Don’t worry no one else will read it but you. And the only way anyone will ever know anything you write down is if you tell them. And I know you going home for part of the year is to help you be able to pay your half of the rent but don’t worry about it okay? I will cover any excess we have from the missing income okay? I meant it when I said your home was here with me.”
“Alex you don’t have to-….”
“Yes i do. You’re very important to me, and I care about you and the things you need. And right now you need a bit of a break.”
“Thank you. That means a lot.”
“Anything for you kid. Now listen I also want you to really consider talking to a therapist or a mental health professional about how you’ve been feeling okay? I won’t force you but I think you might benefit from it. And please talk to me, or one of the other girls if you feel like hurting yourself. I don’t want you to think you have to go thru that alone okay?”
“Okay i will.” She’s right, it’s probably about time i go to therapy, I’m still hesitant as sharing my feelings and the things i keep inside has never been my strong suit.
“Now, how about you go take a warm shower to calm down a bit more, I’ll order some pizzas and get the girls over here?”
“I’d like that.” I smiled softly and headed upstairs to do as she suggested.
About an hour later I was showered, comfy and sitting on the couch sandwiched between Alex and Christen. A “Chrislex” sandwich if you will. Tobin was on Christen’s left, Mal, Sam, Kristie, Rose and the rest of the team were laying as close to me as they could get and spread out through out the living room. Pizza was also spread out through the room as people shared with one another. We had Moana on as the girls said I could pick and that’s my go to movie. I was so focused on the movie i almost didn’t notice my phone buzzing at my side. I looked at the text that came thru and my heart dropped as I realized who it was from… My mom.
“You need to come home.”
Is all it said. My hands instantly started shaking and I had that panicking feeling rising in my chest again. Alex looked over at me curiously and I forced the fakest smile i could muster onto my face. I’m in deep shit now…

Totally not writing about Tuesday on a Thursday
Masterpost wc: 674 cw: attempted mugging
“Look, dude, I have seven dollars and fourteen cents in my wallet. I know that because I had to buy lunch on campus today and I have no idea how I’m going to make seven dollars and fourteen cents last the rest of the week,” a voice said from the alley that Jason was approaching.
A voice that was becoming very familiar over meals and passing each other on the stairs.
“What’s in the fucking bag?” a different voice croaked. “Hand it over.”
“My notes from class and binders of engineering diagrams. It’s worth even less than seven fourteen. I don’t even have a working pen in there, dude, the last one exploded in my hands this afternoon. Do you see how blue my hands are? That is not natural. I hope you know that that is not natural.”
Was Danny really being mugged and talking back to the mugger? This guy was a disaster. Jason moved quietly as he approached where the alley started.
“You’re a fucking liar, hand it over!”
“Okay,” Danny said with forced calm. “Just taking the bag off…”
There was was a heavy ‘fwack’ followed by an ‘omph’ of pain and the distinctive sound of a body hitting the ground. Jason gave up being stealthy and sprinted around the corner. Hopefully the mugger hadn’t gone for anything vital. His place was stocked with first aid, they were close by, he could—
Danny’s head shot up from where he was standing, bag dangling from his hand, over the prone body of the mugger. He smiled sheepishly. “Jason, hi!”
“Don’t ‘hi’ me, Tuesday! Are you okay?” Jason asked. He nudged the mugger hard with his foot. He only got a groan in response.
“Oh, yeah. I mean I’m still broke and tired, but what else is a college student?” Danny said breezily a he shouldered his bag again. He ran a hand through his long bangs, pushing them back. “But I’m fine— he didn’t even nick me with his knife!”
“You still shouldn’t argue with a mugger like that, it’s a good way to get stabbed,” Jason said, taking Danny’s hands and checking that he hadn’t actually been slashed. Jason wouldn’t put it past Danny to hide injuries, “and you don’t want to be stabbed.”
“Yeah, it really sucks. It took me weeks to heal last time I was, I kept ripping my stitches open,” Danny said breezily.
Jason had to close his eyes and take a breath. How was this guy alive? He grabbed the knife the mugger was using, folding it up and tucking it away, before he rooted through the man’s pocket.
“Um, Jay? What are you doing?”
“Looking for his— there!” Jason pulled out the rubber banded roll of cash and tossed it at Danny who almost most fumbled the catch. It was sorta precious how he looked down at it, eyes all wide in shock.
“Call it emotional distress compensation. No way you’ll find who else he robbed and he sure doesn’t deserve it.”
Danny cocked his head, several emotions running across his face before he shrugged and shoved the cash into his bag. “Guess I get to still eat this week!”
“Tuesday,” Jason said. He reached out and tilted Danny’s head up by the chin so that their eyes met. “If you ever don’t have enough to eat, you come to me, alright?”
“I don’t want to—”
“Tuesday,” Jason said more firmly. “I like cooking. I always make extras for left overs. I won’t have anyone in the building starving— I know what that’s like. If you don’t have enough to eat or the energy to cook or anything else, you come to me. There’s always food at my place. Now be a good boy and say you understand.”
Danny blushed and nodded, his head rocking in Jason’s large hand. “I understand."
“Good boy,” Jason said with a smirk. He let his thumb brush over Danny’s cheek before he dropped his hand. “Now come on, I don’t trust you get back home in one piece.”

AN: Jason continues to despair over Danny's self preservation. Danny continues to blue screen over Jason. It's been so fun to get to explore the Jason/Danny dynamic as opposed to the Red Hood/Danny! It's turning out nothing like I expected LOL For how willing Hood is to be put on his knees by a feral Danny, Jason sure enjoys taking control of this soft nerd. Idk, I'm just going with it!

The wind from below made your skirt fly in the wind. You took one more step towards the ledge, looking down at the place you had seen many times before, back when you almost visited the rooftop every single night.
You wondered if someone would hear you if you shouted out all of your pain; screaming for someone to save you, but would they? Or would they keep walking with their heads dropped, eyes fixated on a phone screen with headphones on to block out the world?
Your feet seemed to move on their own, stepping up on the ledge as if they were too familiar with it by now. The alley below was empty, only big dumpsters and bags of trash were down there. No people passed by. No one would hear you scream here, it was practically the perfect place for suicide as well as murder.
But of course, you never actually took the step that you always yearned for. Like all those other times, you backed away after the wind started picking up its speed, howling in your ear like a beast, daring you to jump.
Your heart was thumping in your chest. Just when you fell to your knees to try and calm down your breathing, you felt something wet and cold land on your bare skin. Sighing, thinking it had started to rain you thought of how you’d have to run while your shoes would inevitably get filled with water on the way home.
But when your eyes lowered it wasn’t rain, but snow. Looking up, you saw many more snowflakes slowly falling down. It quickly started to cover all of you, like a white blanket and you almost groaned in relief when the coldness melted on top of your wounds. They had started to itch all the way from school to the rooftop, so much so that you almost dropped your backpack in the middle of the street to start furiously itching until it bled.
The snow became even heavier. To the point where you almost couldn’t see properly; and the snowflakes kept falling onto the bare skin, melting and soothing the redness while the burning feeling slowly dissipated.
Closing your eyes your hands dug into the piles slowly building up, to spread it all over, sighing in satisfaction. During your sweet euphoria, you suddenly heard the sound of a door creaking open.
Your head whipped around so fast it almost gave you whiplash, and you were on your feet at once, backing away from what could be a potential threat.
No one came out.
‘’ Hello? ‘’
You stared at the door, but no one broke the silence. Slowly approaching the door, you were on your guard the whole time. When rounding the corner you decided to go for it, hopefully being able to catch the attacker off guard so you had an advantage.
You jumped forward and kicked the door that had slowly started to close again wide open. Two pair of eyes stared back at you, widened in terror.
‘’ Soobin? ‘’
The poor guy looked like a terrified bunny, all pressed up against the wall behind him while his fists that were clenched hung limply in the air; it looked like a pathetic attempt at squaring up.
‘’ What are you doing here? ‘’
Your concerned frown shifted into an angry one, and the tone became more harsh at your next words, ‘’ Did you follow me here? ‘’
Soobin who was still recovering from you surprising him, only let his mouth hang open but didn’t look like he was sure what to say, so you cut in before him.
‘’ You fucking creep! Why would you do that? ‘’
He panicked.
‘’ No, no- wait! ‘’ he tried to stop you from moving away from him but you ignored his soft eyes pleading with yours, continuing to back to the spot you previously stood in.
‘’ It’s not like that. ‘’
Your dragging feet kept moving towards the edge, but you still decided to give him a chance to speak.
‘’ Then what? ‘’
Soobin gave you a half-smile, seemingly knowing you were still on your guard and didn’t trust him. He cautiously stepped out onto the rooftop, watching your reaction. When he saw that you didn’t move further away, he relaxed and his head raised to the sky, eyes twinkling at the sight of snow falling.
But It disappeared almost as quickly as it appeared, as they landed on you instead, worry taking over.
‘’ I just wanted to make sure you got home safe, you worried me. ‘’ he sighed.
But he didn’t sound too convincing yet, which he probably knew.
‘’ So you followed me so you could see where I live? ‘’
A harsh scoff left your mouth.
‘’ No! ‘’ he paused, jaw clenching. ‘’ You had this look in your eyes, I couldn’t just stand by and do nothing. ‘’
‘’ What look? ‘’
You shifted your weight uncomfortably, feeling like you already knew the answer.
‘’ A look of despair and…hopelessness. Only one, someone who has completely given up and surrendered to their pain would bear. ‘’
You didn’t say anything, but your heart ached painfully.
‘’ Yeonjun has seen it before. He told me. ‘’
Your curiosity spiked and made all manners go out the window. ‘’ Who? ‘’
‘’ It’s fine, we shouldn’t really talk about that. ‘’
‘’ Fine. Then tell me everything you know about them. ‘’
His eyebrows raised in a look of genuine surprise.
‘’ What do you mean? ‘’
‘’ Your dad works with Jay’s dad, I saw them outside your house when leaving. ‘’
‘’ I- uh, didn’t know that was Jay’s dad. ‘’ he bashfully admitted, scratching the back of his head.
You rolled your eyes scornfully, ‘’ And you expect me to believe that? ‘’
‘’ The kids never meet each other. ‘’ he defended, looking like he was starting to get angry. ‘’ Do you know your dad’s colleagues’ kids? ‘’
‘’ No... ‘’
Maybe he had a point. That fact alone didn’t really prove he was guilty. But you had a hard time trusting him because of your past. Whenever you let your guard down just a little around anyone, it seemed that they always betrayed you. Your bullies had sent a handful of bribed students to pretend to be your friend before; all just to watch your reaction, happy to have a friend, be crushed as they finally took them away and revealed their plan. In this situation, it seemed too good to be true that they just happened to have parents that worked together.
‘’ You scared me. ‘’ he repeated, snapping you out of your head.
‘’ The first day you were really nice to me, then the next you act like you want nothing to do with me. I don’t even know what I did wrong! ‘’
His sad tone made you, at last, feel some sympathy for him. You supposed you were pretty rude even though it wasn’t at all what you had planned after finding out they worked together. You were just going to be distant but ultimately exploded because of them dragging you to the gym again.
‘’ I’m sorry. ‘’
His tensed shoulders sunk. ‘’ Thank you. ‘’
You smiled at each other and both seemed to think the same thing at the same time. As the snow piled up on top of Soobin’s head, your attention was drawn back to the weather that brings everyone’s inner child out. So you crouched down to quickly scoop some snow into your hands and you saw him do the same.
Before you could laugh, he threw a huge snowball right at you, hitting your chest and knocking the air out of you, your smile fell off your face.
‘’ Soobin! ‘’
He giggled and tried to run away. You hurried to scoop up even more snow and chased after him, throwing and having the luck of it landing right in his face.
You laughed heartily at the look on his face. He didn’t smile either when it was his turn to get hit, and almost immediately after he surrendered and cried out,
‘’ Okay! We’re even! ‘’
You caught your breath and he helped you get under the roof over the staircase as the snow kept falling intensely. The forgotten phone beeped in your pocket and you fished it out.
Soobin looked at you curiously. You knew he didn’t want to be nosy but his round eyes said otherwise.
‘’ It’s my mom. Finally asking me to visit. ‘’ you groaned. ‘’ I haven’t gone in such a long time. I feel guilty ‘’
‘’ I can come with you. ‘’
‘’ Why would you want to do that? It’s just depressing. ‘’
Soobin shrugged. He didn’t say anything else so you just looked at each other in silence. Your narrowed gaze and his beaming one; until you finally made up your mind.
‘’ Fine. You can come I guess. ‘’
He smiled widely and threw his head around like an excited child before leading the way down the stairs. You wondered on the way down, how you’d actually get to the hospital in this weather. It was practically a storm.
But Soobin answered your question before you could even say it out loud. He opened the entrance door at the bottom of the building and a big black car with tinted windows greeted you.
‘’ You also have a private driver? ‘’
You turned to him.
‘’ Yeah… ‘’ he sheepishly said, hurrying to approach it so you wouldn’t see his ears turning red.
A man who appeared to be in his 50s dressed in a black suit, stepped out of the vehicle. He first bowed to Soobin and then politely to you, which you returned.
‘’ Mr. Choi, we have to leave before the storm gets too bad. ‘’ his voice sounded hoarse like it wasn’t used very often.
‘’ We need a ride to the hospital. ‘’
The driver nodded and immediately got behind the wheel. Soobin turned back and waved for you to come up to the car. You hurried over and he opened the door for you, running to the other side and robbing you of the opportunity to thank him.
As soon as you were both in the car, it started and you were off at a very great speed. The car struggled to get a steady grip when turning out onto the road; it seemed the city wasn’t prepared for the sudden snowfall and therefore no roads were plowed or gritted.
You tried to control the anxiety that kept increasing the longer you spent driving. On several occasions, the car slid too close into the other lane, almost crashing which had Soobin clinging onto you for dear life. Afterward, he’d clear his throat and play it off which made you laugh, despite the situation you were in.
When you turned on the highway, you passed by several cars that had crashed. Police were parked on the bridge and tried their best to wave people off, warning them not to keep driving. For a moment you wanted to tell the driver to turn around like many others did, but the thought of disappointing your mom yet again made you bite your tongue and hold onto the door.
‘’ Are we there soon? ‘’ Soobin yelled over the sound of sirens and the heavy snow hitting the car roof.
‘’ Almost, hold on tight! ‘’ the driver shouted back over his shoulder.
Just then, he had to wrestle with the steering wheel as the tires lost their grip, this time you’re the one who grabbed Soobin. Your heart was drumming widely inside your chest and all you could think about was how stupid you were for standing on that ledge earlier. You didn’t want to die, you couldn’t die yet.
You imagined behind closed eyelids what would happen if you crashed and died in that car. The cycle would likely repeat itself. They would find a new girl to fixate on and she’d be tortured, never having or never taking the chance to fight back. It had to be you, of course.
‘’ Soobin! ‘’
His face scrunched up and he leaned in, struggling to hear you.
‘’ You were right! ‘’
‘’ What? ‘’ he yelled, practically laying on your shoulder now.
‘’ I need you! I can’t do it all by myself! ‘’ you cheerfully yelled back.
A guttural laugh slipped out of his mouth. ‘’ Why are you telling me this now? ‘’
You laughed too.
‘’ Sorry. I just got excited. ‘’
And that was partly true. He didn’t need to know about the fact you wanted to use him because he had more money than you did. Even if you didn’t trust him 100% yet, he would probably be very useful for someone like you, who only had half the power and resources he had.
The car screeched as it came to a jolting stop, colliding with something in front which threw the both of you forward violently. Soobin hit his head while your shoulder bumped into the driver’s seat in front.
‘’ Are you okay? ‘’ you both asked at the same time.
You get out of the car. He looked like he had a bigger collision so you wanted to help him. He reluctantly accepted you helping him in silence, trying his best not to put too much weight on your smaller frame.
Despite him trying to hide it, he eventually had to support himself on the car as his ankle seemed to be causing some pain. At the same time, you saw the head of the driver appear from the other side of the car.
You were about to come around to him but he waved you off and wriggled out of the damaged vehicle with a gruff. The second he was out, panic grew in his eyes. You followed him as he ran over to Soobin, clutching his hands to take a good look at him.
‘’ Are you hurt, sir? ‘’
‘’ No. Don’t worry, I won’t tell dad. ‘’ Soobin tiredly smiled.
The driver sighed as if a huge burden had been taken off his shoulder.
‘’ Why not? ‘’
Soobin turned his gaze to you. His eyes were only half-open and he struggled with his breathing.
‘’ It’s not the first time it’s happened. ‘’
You turned to the driver. You didn’t know why but you felt angry. Why was he a private chauffeur if he could barely drive; crashing several times when he had a young high-schooler to drive around?
He shied away from your glare.
‘’ It’s not what you think, miss. ‘’
You stepped closer to him, which made him step away. His body language screamed of discomfort.
‘’ Y/n, stop it. ‘’
You met eyes with Soobin, who looked almost as angry as you were, and instantly your mood changed. You backed away from the driver who bowed his head in shame, and he only nodded at your quiet apology.
‘’ He doesn’t get paid enough, his vision is only getting worse. ‘’
You all stood in silence as his words hung heavy in the air.
‘’ W-what? ‘’
‘’ I’m going blind, slowly. ‘’
Your eyes flickered around in guilt. ‘’ I’m sorry. ‘’
‘’ If my boss finds out, he’ll fire me. I have a family at home. ‘’
‘’ That’s why I can’t say anything. ‘’ Soobin added. ‘’ But, the injuries are never too bad. One quick trip to the hospital, and I’m good to go. ‘’ he shrugged, trying to light up the tension.
‘’ Again, I’m sorry. That was…really out of character for me. ‘’ you said.
He waved you off for the second time but smiled, letting you know there were no hard feelings. Soobin got approached again and he supported himself on his driver as the three of you slowly started to move towards the entrance of the hospital.
It was a lot emptier and quieter than what it usually would be around this time, probably due to the snowstorm outside. The lady at the desk’s head raised at the sound of your footsteps.
‘’ Hey. What can I help you with? ‘’
‘’ I’m here to see my mom, I’m her daughter. ‘’
‘’ Name? ‘’
You dug out the paper you always kept in your schoolbag with all the information that was needed. She took it out of your hands and her eyes scanned over it before she gestured to the hallway on the right.
You took the lead, Soobin and his driver following at a much slower pace behind. The hallway was too familiar at this point. Years had been spent walking down it, and now you felt bitter at the thought of having to redo it all over again as your mother relapsed just a few weeks ago. She had insisted on you not visiting, even though it made you feel guilty; and she had done such a good job at ignoring your first messages, that you actually hadn’t thought about her since you yourself were in the hospital with the burn wounds.
When your hand touched the door into her room, you wondered what she would say about them, so you quickly decided it was best she’d have nothing to say at all; pulling down the sleeves to make sure they were covered just in time for you stepping in.
‘’ Y/n! ‘’ your mother exclaimed joyfully.
She seemed to remember the role she’d been committed to just a second later, for her smile got replaced with a scowl.
‘’ Why did you come here when I told you not to? ‘’
You ignored her scolding.
‘’ I brought my friend, Soobin. ‘’
Your mom’s angry eyebrows turned into question marks. ‘’ Your friend? ‘’
‘’ Yes? ‘’
‘’ I thought those lovely young men before were your friends. ‘’ she hummed, looking out of the window.
You and Soobin stared at each other. The same fearful expression mirrored on your faces.
‘’ I didn’t know you had made so many new ones. ‘’
‘’ Mom- Who were they? ‘’
She sighed exhaustedly and held her head as if it just hurt to think about it.
‘’ There were so many of them. I think…seven, how could I remember their names? ‘’
Soobin put a hand on your shoulder, sensing how you were going to worry.
‘’ Are they- ‘’
You pushed past him and slid the door open. The hallway was empty closest to your mom’s room, no relatives resided outside them and no nurses patrolled it; but then your eyes continued to shift further down, and in the distance, you saw them.
The door to a room got closed as Jake, Jungwon and Ni-ki joined the other four who were waiting outside. Your heart was in your throat. Immediately you shut the door and turned the lights off.
‘’ They’re here. ‘’
Soobin heard the urgency and panic in your voice and tried his best, despite his injuries to hurry over to the corner of the room. Outside, the voices grew louder.
‘’ Mom, please be quiet ‘’ you whispered to your mom.
She seemed bewildered but stayed quiet, gaze fixated on the small round window on the door just like you and Soobin who were holding your breaths had. If they decided to visit your mom again, you’d be fucked. From where you were standing, you were only out of sight if they peeked through the glass, but not enough in hiding if they stepped in.
They got closer. You could differentiate their voices now. Shoes shuffled closer and you felt yourself unconsciously press harder against Soobin. Your heartbeat grew louder and louder, eventually drowning out the voices that were starting to sound muffled.
‘’ Y/n, they’re gone. ‘’
Soobin tapped you and you released a breath you didn't realize you had been holding in. The dizziness went to your head but he helped you steady yourself.
‘’ Shit, sorry. ‘’
‘’ What was that about? ‘’
You looked at your mom again and gave her an apologetic smile.
‘’ Sorry. We have to go. But I promise to visit you soon again! ‘’
She didn’t answer in time. In under a second, you’ve dragged Soobin out of the room and closed the door, quickly turning your back to your mom so you wouldn’t have to see her face.
The hall was empty again but you wasted no time running to the room you saw them leave out of. If they happened to come back, at least you knew what they were up to before getting caught.
A quick peek into the window told you the room was empty, so you slid it open swiftly and went in with a lot of confidence. A girl lay on the bed in the middle of the room and she backed up against the headboard upon seeing you.
‘’ No, wait! ‘’
You approached her bed, hands up to try to calm her distressed self down.
‘’ We’re not here to hurt you. ‘’
She didn’t move from her spot.
‘’ Isn’t that a girl from our school? ‘’
Soobin stepped further into the room. You were about to get irritated at his interruption but, at his words, you took a better look at the girl and realized he was right. She was a student, one year below you.
Your eyebrows furrowed. ‘’ How do you know them? ‘’
‘’ I just got injured. ‘’
Her arm that stuck out from under the covers was in a cast, and the other arm which laid on top had some familiar wounds on it, the burn marks.
‘’ You didn’t answer my question. ‘’
‘’ We’re…friends. ‘’
Neither you nor Soobin looked rather convinced. While thinking of what to say next, Soobin took your hand to talk outside, out of earshot of the girl. He sat down on the bench and rested his face in his hands.
‘’ What do you think? ‘’
‘’ A new victim? ‘’
‘’ Does this mean they’ve forgotten about me? ‘’
‘’ Let’s hope so. If they’re not keeping tabs on you, it makes it easier to get revenge.’’
He voiced out the thought that had popped into your head as soon as you saw the wounds. You felt terrible about thinking that way though. A part of you wanted to jump in and intervene, but that would bring attention to you if they really had forgotten about you for a moment.
At the same time, why did she look so scared when she saw you? Surely, they must’ve told her about you, right?
‘’ Where do we start? ‘’ Soobin mumbled.
You both sat in silence. A feeling of unspoken hopelessness surrounded you two. It felt like a dilemma, you were stuck at a crossroads.
‘’ What does your dad do? ‘’
Soobin looked taken aback. ‘’ He works for the mayor of Seoul- ‘’
‘’ What! ‘’ you almost screamed, making him jump. ‘’ Jay’s dad is the mayor of Seoul? ‘’
He nodded innocently, pouting at your tone change.
‘’ Fuck. I don’t…know. I don’t think there’s much we can do. ‘’
The two of you sat in silence for a really long time, both heads working overtime to try and come up with something.
You started to chew on your lip. The foot that had been tapping rhythmically out of anxiety, stopped abruptly as an eureka washed over you and made your eyes light up.
‘’ Soobin! ‘’ you gasped. ‘’ You- You’re our key in! ‘’
His eyes widened, but he still looked a bit confused.
‘’ They haven’t seen us together since the first day since you were late. We have a chance of fooling them, making them think we never became friends. ‘’
His eyebrows rose. ‘’ And, you want me to pretend to be their friend? ‘’
You eagerly nodded.
‘’ We need someone on the inside. I don’t know if I can trust Sunoo yet. ‘’
‘’ But me? Y/n, I’m the worst actor! I will fuck up almost immediately. ‘’ he whined.
Your hands found his, and you looked at him earnestly; a spark of newfound hope written all over your face.
‘’ Please. ‘’
Soobin ticked his tongue and looked away from you. He looked like he was fighting on the inside, yet it didn’t take long for him to sigh, ‘’ Fine I’ll do it, for you. ‘’
You squealed with joy and had to hold yourself back from hugging him. It was still necessary to keep some distance, so that if he betrayed you; you wouldn’t be too affected, and hopefully had a backup plan.
His face lit up as a shy smile spread on his face when watching your reaction quietly. It was quite quickly replaced with a determined one seconds later. He took out his phone and handed it to you.
‘’ We’ll have to have some code-name for each other, and you have to go into settings to make sure previews are off. ‘’ you rambled as you received the phone and put your number into it.
He hummed.
‘’ Like baby or something? ‘’
‘’ What? ‘’
Your cheeks heat up.
‘’ If I just tell them you’re my girlfriend, they won’t question why you’re texting so much. ‘’
‘’ Oh…’’ you swallowed, gathering yourself. ‘’ That’s pretty smart. ‘’
You put in the nickname Soobin suggested and then handed the phone back. He shifted on the bench beside you and you got the feeling that he wanted to leave for some reason.
‘’ Do you need to leave? ‘’
He looked guilty. ‘’ I promised Yeonjun I’d be home before six. ‘’
‘’ Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow then. ‘’
He smiled back at you warmly.
‘’ Remember. We’re not friends at school. ‘’
You jokingly looked offended which made him laugh wholeheartedly. He waved you goodbye before slowly disappearing down the hall. It took several minutes for you to get up from the bench and gather your things.
When you passed by the door of your mom’s room, you smiled sadly. However, it became forgotten as your phone vibrated in the pocket of your jacket. You fished it out and instantly the gloomy look you’d been wearing turned happy.

Unknown sender: Hi, did you miss me?
You laughed out loud. It had been what - ten minutes since he left, and he was that excited to text you.
You: Maybe, did you?
Unknown sender: I always do
You rolled your eyes. Was he seriously flirting with you now? Your fingers quickly tapped over the keyboard to send back when your phone pinged as another message came through at the top. Clicking on it, you got ready to tease him about being clingy.

Your stomach dropped.

Thank you @thewholelemon @moodandmist @run-for-chamo-miles and @youarenevertooold for the tags! I'm in love with everything y'all posted, what the hell.
In other news, it seems like my recipe for success is to have a Bad Saturday, unexpectedly write an unprecedented amount on Sunday, manage nothing throughout the week, then rinse and repeat. However, yesterday was a kind of okay Saturday, and I've still written a lot today, so maybe the point is really just Sunday.
In any case, what I've written today is from the same unexpected fic I mentioned in my last WIP post. But also like that post, that's not what I'm going to share, because it's not on my hit list for this year. Instead, I'm joining in with the CORB cheer by posting about, y'know, the one I started last year, good old Bait and Switch, because that's what I was getting all my words out for last weekend. Like, the next chapter is about 2 scenes away from done, when there had only been about 3 scenes in it when I started. So that's good?
Under the cut because this is already getting kinda long and I'm not stopping at six sentences.
I don’t know the answer to that. “Because I’m better than you. Now c’mon, get your head in the game. We have a plan.” “Do we?” “Here’s the plan. You give me a good zinger to make Simon go off—” “No.” “What?” “You think I can set him off with a zinger?” he audibly sneers. “This isn’t a one-liner trick. We build up to it.” “Fine,” I roll my eyes. “You long-con him, he goes off, I get my energy back. Easy-peasy.” Baz is silent. Maybe being a dick and maybe asleep. I can never tell. Finally, he says, “And then you’ll let me out.” “Yeah,” I say. “Totally.”
The slightly difficult thing is that there's also rather a bit of angst being threaded through a fic that is at its core quite lighthearted, but I've received some comments in my time that suggest I may be good at writing things that make you laugh and then also hurt you in rapid succession, so hopefully I can pull it off without it feeling like we're switching genres.
Here's another that's a very little bit of both.
“I would not fucking say that!” Baz yelps. “Calm down,” I swat at him, but the tips of my fingers just slide through the edge of the coffin. I scowl at them. “I saw it in a film. It’s fine. It’s a totally normal thing to say.” “It’s not! It’s really, really not!” By the time he’s run out of steam screeching at me about it, I’m thinking there’s no way this ends up worth it. I don’t feel bad for doing it, but seriously, no one has ever yelled at me for this long. His voice is wearing down. Getting scratchier, which just makes him sound more violent, but then quieter. He ends by mumbling, “I hate you.” It hits weird. I mean, I don’t know. It just sounded sad. And it’s not true. He doesn’t hate me. We’re helping each other.

Leon is so happy to meet other versions of himself at the @tmntaucompetition, Cleo on the other hand? Not so much, he's going through stuff and it's bad enough he's having to deal with Leon and Him. But Leon thinks it might be good exposure.... Hopefully there won't be any bloodshed
--------- “Bro, can't you just chill,? Leo whines. “Your not even 26 yet and I can already see the wrinkles in your face from the resting bitch face you keep sporting”
Leo turns his head to the side, amber eyes narrowing at him, “chill?” He echoes, turns fully to Leon now, “it’s bad enough I have to deal with you and him, but now there’s more of us?”
Leo drags his hands down his face with a groan and Leon catches the slight shake in his limbs. Brows furrowing, Leon adjusts his stance, shoulders drawing back as he fingers the scalpel that’s hidden in his wrappings, ready and waiting.
Keeping his voice low Leon speaks slowly. “It’s not a big deal, their not going to be here for long”
Leo digs his fingers into his skin and lets off a sharp hiss as he hunches his shoulders.
Leon curses and edges out from behind the settee and warily steps closer, “hey” he waits for a solid 5 seconds before the older slider lifts his head, and he hates the look the other is giving him.
His distorted pupils have retracted into slits, and a chill runs through Leon; he suddenly feels like he’s prey and those predators were locked onto him. He desperately tries to remember what he saw the other peepaws do when Leo gets like this, hell Leons sure Casey would have a better understanding of how to help his counterpart.
A low growl ripples out, shattering the quietness that had filled the room. Shit, he thinks, he stares down at the predator.
He feels a tug on his ninpo and dread fills him. He needs to defuse this situation as quickly as he can.
Leon’s eye catches onto a cup of water sitting on the table, eyes dart back and forth between the slider and the water, he’s seen Tello do the same and it worked then, sure Tello had to hide for a few hour a until Leo calmed down and stopped hunting him but it still worked.
He’s just hoping it’ll work now.
He edges toward the table as casually as he could, makes sure he’s out of arm reaches and keeps his tone soft.
“Look i'm going to be real with you, I’ve never been good on the whole “self help” stuff,” Leon air quotes, “but I know the usual process of getting people to calm down from panic attacks won’t usually work on you and I’d really like to not knock you out if I can help it”
Once he’s close, he inches his fingers closer to the cup; those irregular eyes were locked into his own, it unsettles him but if the older wasn’t looking at what his hands are doing then that’s fine.
Like magicians, it’s all about misleading.
Cup firmly in his hand he steps forward.
“So it’s either you let me help you calm down. Or I go get Tello, hell even Casey ” he’s a little disappointed name dropping Casey didn’t get a reaction out of him.
Sharp eyes peek out from his fingers, Leo’s golden eyes are a stark contrast to his black mask, making them all the more piercing as they stare into Leon’s very being.
When he’s met with no other reaction, Leon carries on, “okay that’s good, I’m probably the last person you wanna see but there’s nothing I can do.”
“And hey, I’m sorry” he grins and throws the cup of water at his counterpart's face, the slider flings back with a hiss and lands on his backside.
Leon waits with a bated breath, as Leo stares up at him, eye blinking while the water drips from his face. It takes a few seconds for either one of them to speak.
“What. The hell” Leo growls and Leon can’t take him seriously when he looks like a grumpy wet cat.
Faking casual Leo shrugs nonchalantly and sets the cup down, “shouldn’t have hissed at me then” even as he speaks he’s still creeping away, those same amber eyes narrowed into slits, and he sees the way the eldest slider's body tenses up.
Eugh boy
“Y’know, I’m curious” Leo gets up slowly, water droplets hitting his plastron and onto the floor. “I don’t remember how fast I used to be when I was younger” Leo regrets everything up until this point when he sees a smile twist onto Leo’s face, sharp white canines glisten in the light.
“You sure you won’t pop a hip” unable to hold back a snark, Leon regards him.
“Wanna test it?” His voice is low and menacing and Leo could see the sadistic look in his eyes.
“I just suddenly remembered Donnie wants me, so how about we test this some other time m’kay?” Grinning Leo turns and legs it with his counterpart hot on his tail.
“I shoulda just let you suffer!” Leo yelps just as a hand missed reaching out for him.

it’s cold, so, so cold. the rain easily silences any other sound you may hear, and it overwhelms you. the uneasy body that’s almost slouched in the passenger seat belongs to you.
“i’m sorry, i know you’re tired from practice. i was supposed to drive us home so you could rest but you ended up driving since the rain is too intense and-” rin listens to your ramble of apologies, but doesn’t stop you. however, you catch yourself with a lump in your throat when you notice rin pulling up in the nearest gas station on the highway.
“rin! you don’t have to stop driving because i don’t like it! i know you’re still tired and-” rin forces you to look at him, his fingers pinching your cheek for attention. “i know. i’ve heard you saying the same thing for the past, what, ten minutes?” you bite your lip, assuming that rin has reached his limit for the night. although that’s not the case, you’re only too distracted by the anxious feeling from everything around you.
unfortunately, you don’t hear what rin told you, and even if you did, he doubts you’ll listen to it. so, he looks at the outside of his window, watching the hefty clouds of the night sky pour down heavy rainfall before coming up with an idea to pass the time and to—hopefully—help you out.
“go in the back of the car.” rin gently grabs the hands you’re using to cover your ears to guide you in the rear. “what?” you speak out, eyes anxious with how flashes of light encase your vision from the storm. it’s getting worse now, as the appearance of light gets accompanied by the clang of thunder seconds after. “you heard me, did you not?” rin repeats his words, urging you to listen to him. unsure of what’s fully happening, you sit down in the middle seat at the back, hands starting to pick on the threads of your pants, crumpling the material harshly. “move over.” rin suddenly follows after you, his tall figure having difficulty in squeezing himself through the tight space because of the car console.

however, the storm is unforgiving.

“okay.” your breath is still audibly shaky, chest heaving as cold fingers now drag up the sides of your body. “tsk. calm down, will you?” rin whispers, almost annoyed, yet he states it in the softest way possible. however, your eyes go shut when another bright shine enters the car’s windows. “can’t, rin.” your body shivers, and the rain pours down heavier. with a sigh, rin’s lips touch your forehead, trying his best to keep the both of you as comfortable as possible.
rin’s fingers toy at the hem of your shirt, cold fingers contrast his warm cheeks. “rin?” you murmur, running a hand through his hair, attempting to pull his head away from you to figure out his intentions. “stop that.” he breathes out; taking your hand away from his hair and placing it between the two of you, kissing your fingers slowly as gentle hands caresses your palm. then, he pushes your fingers closer to your face, your own skin touching your lips as rin leans down. a tease of a kiss, perhaps. although it doesn’t last too long. because one or two pecks later, rin goes impatient with his own antics.
abruptly, he removes your fingers blocking the parts of your lips that he once could not adore, deciding that his tongue will be the first thing it meets. little by little, you open your mouth, letting rin feel every bit of your ragged breath. you almost breathe out a moan, but the sudden shock of rin’s cold fingers dragging from your warm neck and down to the underside of your shirt halts it.

People say absence makes the heart grow fonder but you call absolute bullshit on that.
Although to be fair, the problem isn’t the saying. The problem is Kate Bishop.
You’re definitely not the first person to think that, and you certainly won’t be the last considering the kind of person Kate is, but that doesn’t mean you can’t be upset about it. Especially considering the years that have passed.
You’ve always given her the benefit of the doubt, not because you think she deserves it but because you would have driven yourself crazy from the amount of unanswered questions Kate left behind. Or more specifically, from the fact that she left you behind with no explanation.
Kate deciding to leave you and Bishop Security behind to go to university outside of the city wasn’t surprising. What was surprising was her refusing to tell you about her decision until the day she had to leave, making sure to tell you how unambitious she thought you were for taking the job her mom offered you as her secretary.
You still didn’t know what hurt more, her disappearing from your life or the insults she hurled your way before she left. Kate Bishop has many flaws and being an overachiever is definitely near the top of the list. Hence the amount of effort she put into shoving you out of her life.
It should have made working with her mom incredibly uncomfortable but Eleanor seemed to understand your pain better than you could have imagined. Being left behind by the young archer wasn’t an experience that was unique to just you and yet it didn’t make you miss her any less. You're usually good at ignoring the pain her absence left inside you but tonight is different. You look around the bustling party, the smallest of frowns on your face.
This was definitely the worst part of your job. You didn’t mind the long meetings, the stacks of reports you had to look through every day or even the miscellaneous tasks that Eleanor assigns you because you’re the only one who won’t complain about having to bring her another cup of coffee every few hours.
All of that was nothing compared to having to go to stupid galas with even stupider people. You’ll never understand why your boss insists on you accompanying her to every Bishop Security gala considering the lack of something to do. You have a sneaking suspicion it’s her way of trying to get you to interact with more people to hopefully find a way to get over Kate but you’ve never questioned her about it.
You catch sight of your boss while scanning the room for something to take your mind off a certain purple archer and she calls you over to her. You force a smile onto your face as you approach her. “Is everything okay?”
“You don’t have to sound so formal, y/n,” Eleanor says with a small smile. “We’re out of the office.”
“Right. My question still stands though.”
She affectionately rolls her eyes at your insistence. “Yes, everything is fine. I just wanted you to hear the news from me. Kate is home for the holidays…and she’s coming tonight.”
You force yourself not to react even though your first instinct is to run as far away as possible from the party. You try to be calm but your voice comes out a tad harsher than intended. “And I’m supposed to be interested in that information because?”
“Because she’s been looking your way since I called you over.”
Your eyebrows raise in surprise and even though you really shouldn't do it, you lift your head up and scan the room for Kate Bishop. You don’t have to search for long. Even with the years gone by, your eyes are immediately drawn to her tall, suit-clad frame. She meets your eyes from across the room and you swear everyone else disappears until only the two of you remain. You notice the clench in her jaw even from this distance and you hate yourself for finding it extremely attractive.
Some things never change.
“You should go talk to her.”
You tear your gaze away from Kate to stare incredulously at Eleanor for even suggesting that. “I’d rather get fired than spend five minutes with her.”
“Then you’re lucky we’re not at work,” she says with a playful glare. “Come on, y/n, how long has it been since you’ve seen her?”
She already knows the answer. She was the one you called to pick you up from Grand Central Station after Kate left you behind to chase after…whatever it is she was hoping to find out there. You’re not sure if you’re hoping she found it or not.
“That doesn’t matter. She’s visited New York how many times since she started college?” You let the question hang in the air for a few seconds to avoid sounding as bitter as you feel. “And how many times did she come to see me?”
The older Bishop woman raises her hands in mock surrender. “Alright, alright, I get it. I won’t push. Just think about it?”
She walks away from you with a small smile, probably going off to find Jack to tell him all about yet another failed attempt at getting you and Kate back on speaking terms again.
When you turn back, Kate’s gone and you do your best to ignore the ache her absence leaves inside you.
You decide to go back to your apartment a few minutes later which means you successfully miss the drama that unfolds. What you don’t miss is the news report recounting the events or the text from Eleanor telling you you don’t have to go to the office for the next few days. You find it strange but you’re not about to say no to some much-needed time off.
That does mean you miss Kate’s surprising return to Bishop Security which leaves you completely unprepared when she shows up at your door with a ridiculous request and an even more ridiculous outfit.
“I need you to take care of my dog for a few hours.”
That’s the first thing she says when you open your door. No greeting. No apology. No explanation as to why she has the audacity to ask you for a favor after avoiding you like the plague for almost four full years.
Unfortunately for you, your anger is momentarily forgotten at the sight of the adorable golden retriever standing happily at the brunette’s side. “Since when do you have a dog?”
“Since last night,” she replies with a shrug. “I saw him outside of the party yesterday and my heart wouldn’t let me leave him behind.”
You have no doubt that she was trying to be cute with that reply but all it does is make you remember all the reasons why you should slam the door in her face. She seems to read your mind just from the shift in your facial expressions because she ‘accidentally’ lets go of the dog’s leash and lets him run straight into your apartment.
“Listen, I can explain, and I will, just not right now. But I promise you it’s important.”
Of course.
You were kidding yourself if you thought Kate had actually changed. It’s always been this way with her. There’s always something to chase that’s infinitely more important than you. So important, in fact, that she can’t even stop for five seconds to explain what the hell is going on.
“You haven’t changed a bit, Kate.” There’s a flash of something in her eyes, maybe it’s regret or maybe it’s disappointment, but it’s gone just as fast as it came. She opens her mouth to say something but you interrupt her before she can dig herself into a deeper hole. Yet another habit that you’re sure she hasn’t learned to break. “It’s fine, just go.”
She hesitates for a second before giving you a small nod and walking away. You watch her go just like all the other times before. Except this time there’s an excitable dog waiting inside your apartment. You try not to think about how badly you wish the furry companion by your side was Kate instead as you go about your day.
To no one’s surprise, you don’t hear from the archer for the rest of the day. You would be disappointed if you weren’t so used to it. At least this time, Kate’s broken promises only result in you having to take care of the golden retriever, who you’ve affectionately started calling Lucky, and nothing else…or so you think.
It’s not until late morning the next day that your door receives another urgent knock. Lucky immediately reacts, jumping down from the couch and running over to the door, his tail wagging rapidly as if he can tell his new owner is waiting on the other side. You chuckle despite yourself before following after him. “I don’t think you’re getting this dog back, Kate.”
The smile on your face disappears once you take in her appearance. Her face is littered with small cuts and you can see the outline of a bruise forming on the side of her jaw. Your eyebrows furrow the longer you look at her but the answer is given to you by the purple costume she’s wearing. Even without a bow in her hand, it’s obvious what her outfit represents and you can literally feel your heart sink into the depths of your stomach.
“y/n-”
“No. Save it.” There’s a mix of concern and frustration in your tone but you don’t have nearly enough time to figure out which feeling is stronger. “Just take your dog and go.”
“I can’t,” she says, tinges of desperation painting her voice. “I owe you an explanation.”
You scoff. “Oh, you owe me much more than that. You have no idea what the last four years have been like for me.”
The brunette takes a step forward, clearly asking a silent question. “Then tell me what I’m missing. Help me make it right.”
“I’m not a stupid Avengers mission, Kate!” You hate the way your voice breaks under the weight of your repressed emotions. “If you're looking for someone to save, you're in the wrong place. I don't need you. Not anymore.”
You're ready for that to be the end of the conversation and you reach out to grab hold of Lucky’s leash. You're about to hand the leash over to Kate when her next words stop you in your tracks.
“What if I need you?”
You stare at her with wide eyes almost not believing what you've just heard. Four years of silence and absence. That's what it took to hear those words you've desperately longed for.
But it's not enough.
“You're a little too late.”
She wants to fight back against your words. You know her well enough to recognize that spark of determination in her eyes. Despite what you've just said, a part of you hopes that's what she's going to do. That this time she’ll fight for you.
Instead, all you get is a mumbled apology as she snatches Lucky’s leash and walks away again. You shouldn't have expected anything different…but you did. You expected whatever mess she seems to be in to be more than enough motivation to fix what happened between the two of you.
Kate Bishop is many things but predictable isn’t one of them.
The next few days go by far too slowly for your liking. Eleanor denies your request to go back to work (multiple times) and without a place to travel to for the holidays, you’re stuck in the one place you’d rather not be. You don’t think there’s a single corner of New York that won’t remind you of the one person you don’t want to spend any more time thinking about.
It’s not until the day before the Christmas party, a party you helped arrange even though it’s definitely not a part of your job description, that you run into the purple archer once again. Or more specifically, she runs into you.
You’re on your way out of your apartment despite the heavy rain that falls outside. You open your door expecting to be met with an empty hall only to find a soaking-wet Kate Bishop standing on your doorstep, looking like the world’s largest golden retriever. You do your best to ignore the way your heart skips a beat just from the mere sight of her. It takes a few seconds for you to get over your shock but you manage to find your voice. “Kate? What are you doing here?”
“I’m sorry, I know I’m the last person you want to see right now.”
You briefly consider slamming the door shut in her face but decide against it. For the moment. “That didn’t answer the question, Bishop.”
“I just…” She sighs. “I had to see you again.”
“So you decided to walk here in the pouring rain?” You’re stuck between wanting to call her an idiot and wanting to admit how cute she looks. Yeah, you’re still a sucker for her puppy dog eyes.
“I know I don’t deserve another chance after everything I’ve done but please. I can’t keep this inside any longer. I need to talk to you.”
A long moment of silence goes by before you make up your mind. You might be signing yourself up for more disappointment but you have too many unanswered questions to let her walk away again.
“Come in before you catch a cold,” you say as you open the door wider for her.
She wastes no time in complying and you’re almost certain the shakiness of her hands has less to do with the rain and more to do with her nerves. You take a deep breath to calm your racing heart before shutting the door and following after her.
She stands awkwardly in the middle of your living room, her eyes scanning every picture frame and random poster that adorns your walls. You can tell the realization she comes to by the subtle slouch of her shoulders. There’s not a single thing in your living room that carries the memory of her. No pictures, no posters, no trace of the role she played in your life at some point.
“Let me get you a towel or something.” You start to walk away but a hand on your wrist stops you. You let her turn you around, not putting up any sort of fight as she pulls you in closer to her.
You wait for her to say something but all she does is stare into your y/e/c eyes, her grip on your wrist tightening ever so slightly. You can practically see every thought that flickers through her mind and you want nothing more than to spend the rest of the day deciphering the walking contradiction of feelings that make up who she is.
“y/n…” Her voice trails off as her blue eyes travel down your face. You’ve never seen that look before but you’re almost certain you know what it means. And it makes your head spin. “I shouldn’t have walked away. Not the first time, not the last time. But I…I’m so afraid of hurting you. Again. I thought dealing with my feelings would be easier if I was away from you but I was wrong. All it did was make you a stranger and you have no idea how much I regret that. How badly I want to make things right between us because I…I love you. I always have. And I can't go another second without you knowing that.”
You’re stuck between who you’ve been and who you want to be.
You’ve spent the better part of four years cursing Kate for leaving you, regretting the love you couldn’t help but foster for her, wishing she had never stepped foot into your life. But now…with her standing in front of you, looking at you with sincere eyes strong enough to make any other girl weak in the knees, you accept the truth you’ve been pushing away for so long.
You don’t blame Kate for leaving. You don’t regret the years you spent by her side. You don’t wish you never met her. You don’t hate her.
You love her.
It’s been that way since the day you met her and no amount of stupid mistakes or misunderstandings can ever change that. Hell, not even both of your stubborn personalities could change it.
“Say something,” she whispers. “Please.”
She leans in toward you. It’s a small move but you pick up on it immediately. Your breath catches in your throat before you do the only thing you can think of.
You close your eyes and take a leap, trusting Kate to catch you.
And she does. For the first time, you embrace the uncertainty that makes up your strained relationship and she doesn’t leave you hanging. She meets you halfway and the feeling of her lips against yours holds a promise you know she’ll fight tooth and nail to keep. She's not leaving.
This time, and every time from here on out, she's staying. And that's all that matters.
