Love has always been painted as a grand and dreamy gesture in movies and books,the kind that leaves you breathless, where every moment is filled with butterflies and every glance feels like it could stop time. I grew up on those dreams, watching romcoms where Shah Rukh Khan taught me that when you truly love someone, you’d move mountains just to see them smile, even if it means letting them go. The little things,the letters tucked away in drawers, photos slipped into wallets, made me believe that love was about these tiny tokens of affection, and that one day, someone would make me feel like the most beautiful woman in the world, even if it wasn’t true. I imagined love as a fairy tale, where someone’s adoration would make me fall in love with myself, too. I thought that when I found love, it would be a perfect match to the dreams I’d held onto, ticking off every box. But love isn’t about checking off boxes; it’s about throwing the list away entirely. When you’re in love, truly in love, it doesn’t matter if your dreams align or if everything is picture-perfect. Love, as I’ve come to realize, is about embracing the imperfections, the flaws, the reality that no one can live up to those cinematic ideals. It’s not about finding someone who fits a mold, but about loving them so deeply that the mold shatters, and you love them anyway. In *The Notebook*, when Noah reads Allie their story every day, even though she doesn’t remember, that’s love. In *P.S. I Love You*, when Gerry’s letters guide Holly through her grief, that’s love. It’s unconditional, without expectations, without needing a reason or validation. I’ve come to see that love isn’t about someone making me feel worthy; it’s about loving someone so completely that worth doesn’t even enter the equation. Real love is unconditional. It doesn’t ask for anything in return, it just is. It’s about loving someone not because they fulfill your dreams, but because they are your dream, with all their flaws, quirks, and imperfections. That’s the kind of love I believe in, the kind where expectations fall away, and all that’s left is the pure, unfiltered truth of how much you care.
I love you in this way🚬

Hi!
I’m working dutifully on your gift and man, is it angsty. I won’t tell you too much…because some things should remain a surprise.
It’s sad. I’m throwing a little bit of toxicity in as a treat(for you), but mostly it’s just sad.
It’s a few thousand words long so far! Is any of it readable? …No! (But we’ll get there 😂)
I’d genuinely be surprised if you guessed who I was before I reveal myself. And I don’t mean this in any sort of way, I think we’ve just existed in two separate corners of the fandom(but I’m so happy to get to know you now! You seem really cool!)
Ooh so for genres I do love books based in mythology(any kind!). I also sometimes like a slight mystery with a focus on drama (ask me for specifics and I’ll give them), and rom coms are cool too. Oh and high fantasy, if I’m in the right headspace to have a massive book hangover, which doesn’t happen that often.
And there’s nothing wrong with being pretentious. I am, too, about certain things.
I think in terms of superpowers I’d like shapeshifting. That seems pretty cool.
Questions!
Can I lean into morally dubious Rhys?
Who’s on your hear me out cake? (I can’t take credit for this one)
What’s your favorite piece of artwork you’ve made? (Brag about yourself!)
hello dear santa i am SO SORRY, i know you've been waiting in my ask box forever! i finally have the time to write out my reply :((( GOOD, the angst!! don't tell me too much, i can't wait to scream in pain in your comments i, as an angst connaisseur, adore sad but i love you for putting a little of toxic just for me <333
i'm sure it's a work of art ok
DO NOT WORRY, i'm not taking it in any kind of way if anything, i'm even more excited to find out who you are 😼 (i'm happy to get to know you too! i've really been enjoying our talks)
ooh, i really enjoy mythology as well! i'm not that into rom coms, though i've read a few; i like romance but i also like when other things happen around it so i don't tent to seek them out and i also agree with you on the high fantasy, my preferred ones read almost like a made-up history book but it does involve massive hangovers
i mean, it's been over a year since i've read the first baru book and despite the fact that i loved it i'm still not ready to get into the second one 😜
(please tell me the details of the drama/mystery genre)
okay, now i really want to know what you're pretentious about! we can be pretentious together
okay shapeshifting IS cool, a top tier choice, a classic one too —
QUESTIONS!
ABSOLUTELY you can lean into morally dubious rhys all you want, i love rhys at his shadiest motherfucker and i love him at his daddiest husband, so go whichever way feels right for you
OKAY, i have never thought about this before so here are my unfiltered thoughts on the matter: i am putting an acotar character on my hear me out cake and it's the weaver.
I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S A POPULAR TAKE LMAO i'm scared to answer this question because i know somebody will be like "well, actually this is the most common answer and totally ordinary." and then i would be crushed. so i'm going to be very cheeky and say jagna from "the peasants" is on my hear me out cake ✌️😗 and since i know for a fact that, save for me, only like 2 other people in this fandom even know who i'm talking about, the only people that would disagree AND be genuinely mad about this take are polish literature teachers and the peasants in question.
and my favourite piece oh gosh!! i love mucha elucien from elucien week. that one destroyed my wrist but i've done some really cool things i haven't gotten the chance to try before AND it came out looking so good 😌😌 i'll be riding that high for a while still
dear santa, i hope your halloween is stellar and full of spooky goodness! see you next time 🎃🎃

Sweet Talkin’. Yan Dabi x Reader [COMM]
There’s been an abnormal amount of sirens tonight.
It should be unnerving -- and to an extent it is -- but this isn’t what keeps you awake. Not that, or even the dogs barking outside accompanied with an occasional derogatory yell. With a heavy heart, you can say that you’ve gotten used to all of that noise. No, it’s something different that steals you from the welcoming comfort of a deep slumber.
The thing that truly keeps you up is the anticipation of what is to come. Or more precisely, who.
The bright glow of your phone strains your tired eyes, but it’s your best shot at finding entertainment. Squinting at the blinding light, exhaustion seeps into your being despite your best efforts to ward it off. No matter how much caffeine you drink later on in the day, it’s not enough to to thwart your natural inclinations to sleep.
For most, nighttime is a relaxing time of day that’s coveted. It brings a time of solitude, to reflect and rest up for the next day. While you wish you could return to the days where you felt like that, it’s long behind you now. Instead, you evade sleep, in fear of what could occur when you’re in the defenseless state.
An illusion of control is better than none at all.
“You’re gonna get dark circles under those pretty eyes if you keep staying up this late.”
A deep voice rumbles from the entrance to your shared room, one that you instantly recognize. Even in your groggy state, your emotions heighten in his presence. Turning off your phone and placing it down, you stretch your arms out, a yawn leaving your lips in the process.
So he’s back.
“Yeah, yeah…” you grumble back, caring little for the teasing comment. After feeling around your nightstand, a click resonates, light illuminating your room. Once your eyes adjust, you spot your unwelcome visitor, who makes himself at home. Dabi walks towards you, your bed creaking under his added weight as he sits down. Untying his shoes, he throws them carelessly in the corner.
Sensing your staring, he looks over his shoulder and grins at you. “Awe, you miss me or somethin’? How cute.”
A groan leaves your lips, and you reach to throw a pillow at him. He easily deflects it with a snicker, working on taking his shirt off next. At least now that he’s back you feel more inclined to sleep, knowing that he can’t sneak up on you. Splatters of dark vermilion catch your attention, mouth curling downwards into a frown.
If there’s anything you’ve learned in your time with Dabi, it’s that you shouldn’t ask where the blood stains come from. Ignorance is bliss, right? It’s still an unnerving sight, especially since you know it isn’t his.
The relationship you two share is nothing if not unconventional. His occupation -- if you can even call it that -- has him coming and going at unholy times at night. Sleep is difficult to come by, not knowing when he might make an appearance. It’s what leads you to stay up some nights, a preferable experience to tossing and turning with anxious thoughts plaguing you.
As long as you stay in your designated place, Dabi holds true to his promise of doing you no harm. Thinly veiled threats under the pretense of being your “roommate” lead you to the current day, an awkward routine settling in. For all it’s worth, it could be worse. You’re acutely aware of what Dabi is capable of, having seen the ashes of corpses blurred out in the news.
Why he’s taken a liken to you is beyond you. It still beats dying, only by a sliver.
“There are some leftovers in the fridge,” you tap your phone, reading the time. Three in the morning. Great, and you have work tomorrow too. “I think I’ll give sleeping a shot now that you’re back.”
Dabi raises an eyebrow at this, a fresh shirt without blood stains now on. “You always sleep when I get back. It hurts my feelings. What, am I not good enough company?”
‘If I’m being honest, not really.’
He grins at how you shiver, lazily crawling over to be by your side. His sudden presence fills your nose with unknown scents, ranging from smoke to burnt leather. Underneath is hints of his cologne, all mixing together to disorient you further. Dabi loves riling you up, testing the limits of what you can handle.
You take a deep breath, hugging your knees to your chest. As long as you don’t let it get to you, it’ll be fine. He always gets bored eventually, leaving you to do as you please. That’s what you’ll aim for.
“It’s not that. I just have stuff to do tomorrow, and I don’t like being exhausted. It’s my long shift.”
His trademark grin melts away, furrowing eyebrows and a grimace taking its place. Mentioning your life outside of him is a tricky battle, and you can’t help but regret mentioning it. Being in a sleep deprived state is a major disadvantage in your interactions with him.
“This again? I thought I told you to quit. Rent or whatever won’t be an issue, I’ll handle it.” Dabi scoots closer to you, wrapping an arm around your bare shoulder. His skin feels rough against yours, coarse hands rubbing circles into you. You bite your lip at the sensation, hair on the back of your neck standing.
“I... I like my job. Sure, it can be irritating at times, but it gives me something to do during the day. I’d go stir crazy without something concrete to focus on.” The words are heartfelt, unfiltered. When he responds in silence you worry you’ve made a mistake, upsetting him with your defiance.
He huffs against your neck, lifting his head and shooting you a displeased look. His voice is a low murmur, one that reverberates into the core of your very being. “Always making trouble for me..."
Dabi’s grip around you tightens, and you gulp thickly. With how casual he speaks to you, it can be easy to forget the major power imbalance. Instead of greeting you with insults, or worse, he lightly flicks your forehead.
You blink, baffled.
“Don’t most people hate their jobs? I figured you’d be jumping at the idea of having more free time, or whatever. So you can focus on other things.”
It’s not a confession you were expecting, your cheeks flushing at the considerate nature of his words. While it’s true quitting your job is an appealing thought, it creates a semblance of balance within your now chaotic life. Helping you stick to a schedule, in the same way school used to.
Now feeling confident in expressing yourself, your taut muscles relax into his touch. “I’m too tired to think about it properly, if I’m being honest. I don’t know how you can stay up this late all the time without losing it.”
Deflecting from the previous topic makes you feel better. If Dabi notices your intentions he doesn’t point them out, allowing you to take control of the conversation without complaint. He must prefer it over when you’d just shake and cry in his presence.
“You get used to it, sweetheart,” he drums his fingers against you, smirking. “I’ll make a night owl outta you yet.”
Any implications in his words go straight over your head.
“As tempting an offer as that is, I think I’ll pass. ”
He shrugs at your indifference, removing his arms from your frame. The lack of enveloping warmth causes you to shiver, Dabi searching through his bag. You peak over his shoulder out of curiosity, his scarred hands settling on an object which he pulls out.
It’s a copy of Animal Crossing, in all of its beautiful glory. You wipe your eyes, unsure if what you’re seeing is reality.
“W-what?” you guffaw before your brain has the chance to stop you, jaw agape and head tilted. Dabi places it on your lap, and returns to his previous position of holding you. There’s clear amusement in his eyes at your stunned state, relishing in your every reaction.
“Did I get the wrong thing? This is that game you wanted, isn’t it?”
It had to have been a week or so ago. You lamented to him about not being able to afford this, not even realizing he was giving it any attention. To think he remembered, and acted on it for your sake... is a touching sensation. Maybe he is capable of selflessness after all.
The cute box art puts a smile on your face, one that Dabi stares at.
“I have to say, I’m surprised,” you pick it up, looking at the back with wide eyes. “Did the cashier give you a funny look when you picked this out?”
‘I really need to start thinking before I speak.’
He shakes his head at your blunt comment, not taking any offense. “I didn’t get it that way.”
‘Oh, well... better not ask more than necessary. There’s no blood on it so at least that’s a good sign.’
Wiggling free from his grip, you rotate your legs over the side of the bed, intent on getting your switch. An opportunity like this must be taken advantage of, and you’ve wanted to play this game for some time now. Dabi must’ve read your mind, and pulls you back to him with little effort before you get the chance.
“If I remember correctly, you said you were tired just a few minutes ago.”
He plucks the game from your fingers, and places it on the side furthest from you. What a cruel world this is, to have paradise so close and yet so far. You can’t help the pout that forms at his actions.
“The situation changed, I’m wide awake now.” you explain to an unmoved Dabi, launching over his lap to get your coveted game back. He picks it up, lifting it over your head with a chuckle. So that’s how it’s going to be.
Defeat settling in, you retreat for now. A sigh leaves your lips, arms crossing over your chest. You should’ve known better, Dabi has made it clear to you that he wants your attention. Looks like you’ll have to wait until after work to get a taste of Animal Crossing.
There’s a glint of mischievous in his azure eyes, one that you’ve seen more often than you wish. Dabi sighs in mock hurt, placing a hand over his heart. “Not even so much as a thank you for my efforts. That’s cold, babe. Real cold.”
“I’m sorry, you’re right. Thank you, it means a lot.”
He shakes his head, clicking his tongue. “That’s not what I was looking for. Try again, sweetheart.”
A flurry of thoughts fly through your mind, all competing with one another to offer a solution. Does he want money for it? He should know that you’re not capable of producing that amount, or you would’ve bought the game for yourself. Dabi gives you a moment to think, before offering the answer to you.
He puts his pointer finger on your lip, maintaining eye contact while doing so.
“Oh, t-that.”
“So glad to see that you’re finally catching on.”
It could be the summer heat winning over your AC, the room suddenly feeling warmer than it did a few moments prior. You look down at your blankets, focusing on anything other than the person in front of you. This level of teasing is nothing new with Dabi, he always manages to fluster you.
He sits, relaxed, waiting for you to make a move. There aren’t any other options that you can think of, so you give into what he wants. Moving closer to his face, you feel his warm breath fanning against your skin. Your hand twitches, pressing against his chest to offer balance.
Squeezing your eyes closed, you tilt your head, soft lips brushing over his own. All of your movements are hesitant, your entire body feeling like it’s on fire. Heart pounding violently against your chest, you move to pull back. Only to discover his hand on the back of your head is stopping you from doing so.
Dabi slants his lips back over your own, nibbling your bottom lip. You freeze, the unexpected affection leaving you incapable of reacting. It’s when you squeak that he finally loosens his grip, opening his eyes to take in your embarrassed countenance.
All things considered, it wasn’t an unpleasant experience.
You cover your burning face with your shaking hands, feeling the warmth emanating off of you. He makes it even worse by chuckling, the low rumble filling you with indignation. There never is hope of catching a break with Dabi.
“You might be the one with a fire quirk after all,” he leans forward, placing a hand against your hot forehead. “Mm... that look you’re giving me is too much. You have to be doing it on purpose at this point.”
Fed up with his relentless teasing, you smack his hand away and purse your lips. He props his arms behind his head, letting you glare at him to your heart’s content. From his lack of reaction, you get the feeling he isn’t too intimidated by you.
“Whatever, I’m going to bed,” you huff, returning to your side and pulling up the blankets. He doesn’t make a move to stop you, and you take the opportunity to lay down on your side. Refusing to look at him, you focus on the wall.
Dabi pokes your cheek, which you ignore.
He lets out a long sigh at your antics, joining you underneath the covers. You hear shuffling behind you, and can’t help but wonder what it is that he’s up to. Maybe he’s succumbing to his own exhaustion, and will let you sleep in peace? What a perfect world it’d be if that’s the case.
The thought is entertained for three seconds before you’re pulled against his firm chest from behind, toned arms snaking around your torso and staying there. His body is always so warm. It doesn’t help that you’re already embarrassed from before. Dabi grumbles something incoherent, placing his head in the crook of your neck.
Accepting the situation for what it is, you stop moving. He reaches over you to turn off the light, and darkness surrounds you once more. All you can hear are your own labored breaths, and rapidly pounding heart. It might be impossible to sleep like this.
You’ll call out of work for tomorrow.
“... Dabi?” you whisper, voice soft and barely audible. He grunts in response, nuzzling further into your neck. For the past few months, there’s been a thought that haunts you at every turn. One that you can never find an answer to, and have been too frightened to investigate beyond your own musings.
It’d be easy to play this off as sexual attraction alone, yet a voice in the back of your head says otherwise. That what Dabi feels for you goes beyond that, into a sinister territory that you want desperately to avoid. Why is it he’s patient -- borderline kind -- with you, yet cruel to everyone else? None of it makes logical sense, his actions erratic and seemingly without reason.
Maybe you shouldn’t know. Still, you ask, against your better judgement.
“Why do you like me so much?”
You feel how he smiles against the skin of your neck, the sensation stirring up unknown emotions within. He squeezes you against him once, letting out a low hum as he considers your words. While waiting for him to speak, you hold in a breath.
“Dunno. Just do,” Dabi offers a noncommittal response, one that leaves you greatly unsatisfied. It seems he’s not even aware of it himself, the effect you have on him unlike anything he’s ever experienced. “Don’t worry your pretty little head about it.”
“... Alright, I won’t.”
“Good. Now get some sleep, before I ask you to kiss me again.”

In The Cards
*not my gif
The Mandalorian x reader
Word count: 2k
Summary: While traveling with the Mandalorain, you stumble across an older woman who claims she can read your fortune. But what happens when she sees your ever brooding companion in the cards?
A/N: My first attempt on writing for Mando. Thinking about writing more for him. Hopefully it’s good.
***
The constant hum of the Razor Crest’s mechanisms filled your head to the point of insanity. It never really bothered you before, but after being on the ship for more than two weeks without a single stop, you grew sick of the thing. Of course, you kept this all to yourself. You wouldn’t dare to voice your actual thoughts with the Mandalorian in earshot.
Though he remains his usual reserved self, he’s been ever so kind to you in his own way. By that, you mean he’s provided you a place to sleep and food to eat while you looked after the child. That’s where it pretty much ends concerning his generous hand. At times, you felt like a burden. He rarely ever talks to you, and regards you with hmmm’s or single worded answers. Because of this, it grew a bit lonely. You wanted to reach out to him, to talk to him or have him open up a bit, but you were always afraid on how he might react. Would he disregard you? Would he get angry at you for pushing the unspoken boundaries? Would he drop you off somewhere and never turn back? It was always those gnawing doubts that cause you to hesitate and choose not to say anything.
The clang of boots hitting against the latter’s metal rungs drew your attention away from your own thoughts, causing your head to turn towards the source. The Mandalorian towered over your sitting frame, casting his shadow over your figure. The gleam of the light against his beskar armor made him more menacing compared to how he usually looks.
“We’re docking soon,” he said, his modulated voice escaping the helmet.
“Where?” you asked, ever prying whenever the opportunity presents itself.
“A small moon,” he replied.
“Why?” you asked again, craving for more interaction since the Child has yet to speak.
“We’re low on provisions,” he huffs out, obviously annoyed with the interrogation. “You’re staying here.”
“What? No,” you tried to reason. You needed to get out: to stretch your legs, to breathe unfiltered, clean air, to see some sort of natural light instead of the artificial one. “Please, I need to get out of here. I think it would be good for the Child as well. He needs a change of surroundings as much as I.”
Though you couldn’t see his face, over time you have become an expert on reading his body language. The slight tilt of his helmet, the gentle clench of his fist, and change of his stance told you that he was conflicted but reluctant.
“Fine,” he said, ending the conversation there.
You watched him as he walked away to another part of the ship. You couldn’t help but feel a pang in your heart. It happened whenever you finished talking with him, and you constantly wondered why he did the things he did.
***
You decided that the warm sun settling on your skin was a sensation that you would cherish whenever you feel a chill in the ship. You welcomed the warm weather that the small moon provided, and enjoyed the spacious outdoors. On one side, the Mandalorain strode with the intent of intimidating the salesman that surrounded you in the marketplace. On the other, the Child followed the two of you in his pod, looking at everything that passed him with wonder in his eyes. You too looked around, observing the many faces and species of people that bustled about.
You followed the Mandalorian, abiding to his strict orders to remain close to him at all times. It was a little annoying and a bit condescending at first, but upon seeing how big the crowd is here, you finally understood. You stopped when the Mandalorian started to haggle with a merchant, who seemed to not buy his intimidating warrior look. Not finding interest in their little argument, you turned your attention to other products that the merchant was offering.
When observing a seemingly peculiar fruit, you felt a strange sensation creep upon you, starting from your lower back to your neck, causing you to shiver. A faint whisper of your name grabbed your attention. The gentle noise sounded like it came from right beside you, but there was no one around you. You heard your name again, causing you to turn around in instinct. An older woman matched your gaze from across the way, a smile creeping upon her face causing her mouth to crinkle at the corners. You let out a breath you didn’t even know you were holding, as the woman beckoned you to her. You looked over at the Mandalorian, who was still arguing with the merchant and the Child still at his side. Shaking your head, you made your way to the old woman at her booth.
“Ah, Y/N,” she greeted, giving you a toothless grin. “I’ve been calling you.”
“How do you know my name?” you asked, putting your guard up at this stranger.
“How can I not know it?” she countered, before pointing a bony finger towards the Mandalorain. “He’s been muttering it ever since he arrived.”
You looked over at your beskar clad companion, who hasn’t even noticed your absence yet. You turned your head to the woman, a question upon your lips, but you were instantly silenced when she held up her hand.
“But that’s not why I called you over here,” she said, pulling out a small box. “I called you over here to give you a gift.”
“Me?” you asked. “Why?”
“Are you always so full of questions?” she countered again, raising an eyebrow. “Now, pick three cards.”
You looked down as the woman fanned out a bunch of ornate cards, faced down. Putting aside all the questions and doubts in your mind, you picked out three cards only to have them snatched away by the woman.
“Perfect,” she said, putting away the other cards and laying out the ones you picked on the small table before you. “The gift I’m giving you is me telling your fortune.”
“Really?” you said, doubt coming again.
“More questions, huh?” she snapped back. “Well, the three cards show three things: the past, the present, and the future. Now shut up, so I can read.”
You sighed, and watched as she flipped the first card. You looked at the symbol on the card, it having no meaning to you at all, but your interest was piqued when the stranger hummed.
“The warrior and the peacekeeper,” she observed. “Interesting.”
You were about to question her, but bit back your tongue, not wanting to get scolded at by her. You thought back to the time when you met the Mandalorian. He was arguing with a merchant on your home planet, somewhat similar to now. The merchant pulled out a blaster, and upon seeing the Child, you threw yourself in front of it, trying to reason with the both of them in order to prevent any sort of violence from erupting. The issue resolved itself, and the Mandalorian asked for you to accompany him for the purpose of watching after the Child. He figured if you could talk your way out of that predicament, you could talk your way almost out of anything. You decided to keep your mouth shut, and watch her flip over the next card. Another symbol, but it still met nothing to you. You watched the woman press her lips into a tight smile, meeting your eye.
“I can tell you want to ask a question,” she chuckled. “Good for you for keeping your mouth shut. And for that, I’ll answer your question. This one means unspoken love.”
You opened your mouth to say something, but nothing came out. Your heart quickened its pace, as heat bloomed in the center of your chest. You didn’t know how to interpret that. Was the Mandalorian in love with you? Were you in love with him? But that’s crazy, you two barely talk. Yet, you always feel whole whenever he’s close. You feel warm whenever he touches you, even if it’s short, gentle gesture. And you can’t deny that you miss him when he leaves for bounties.
The woman was about to flip the third card, the card that will tell the future. But as if it was instinct, you reached out and stopped her hand. She looked up, and she was met with your determined gaze.
“I don’t need to know,” you said. “You have given me enough already.”
She opened her mouth to say something, but instead the call of your name came to your ears first. But it wasn’t from her voice, but from the automated voice of your Mandalorian. You turned your head to see him stalking towards you, the Child’s pod trailing behind him. He reached out, grabbing your arm and pulling you away from the woman. She looked at the card, and gave you smile and a wink before you were whisked away.
“I told you to stay close,” he hissed, picking up his pace towards the Razor Crest.
“Well, you never said how close,” you countered, knowing you weren’t helping your case.
“You knew exactly what I meant,” he snapped, before stopping dead in his tracks. He downcast his head a bit, sighing. “I don’t know what I’d do if anything happened to you,” he said, a bit lower compared to his previous statements.
Your heart plunged down to the floor as your head began to swim. Guilt washed over you, but the second card’s symbol flashed in front of your eyes. You didn’t have time to even mutter out an apology; the Mandalorian resuming his fast walk towards the ship.
***
You pulled the blanket closer to your body in hopes that the warmth will force you to sleep. But every time you close your eyes, you see that damn symbol. It should’ve made you happy but the true meaning still eluded you. The symbol wasn’t the only thing that plagued you from sleeping, however. The woman read the third card, and smiled and winked. What did that mean? You would’ve felt better if you and the stranger both didn’t know. Yet there was someone out there who knew your future.
You squeezed your eyes shut, trying to ignore the symbol and even out your breathing. Maybe if you focus on your respirations, you would get bored and fall asleep. Nothing worked. Repositioning, blanket, no blanket, pillow, no pillow, nothing helped you and hours have already passed by. You were about to get up and walk around to exhaust yourself, but were stopped when you heard the Mandalorian’s heavy footsteps. You quickly put yourself back to your cot, pulling the blanket over you, and closing your eyes. You had your back to the door, waiting for him to leave.
But instead, the familiar swish of your door opening reached your ears. He was coming into your room. Did he know you were up? You listened as he stepped closer to where you were at. You furrowed your brows when you heard a small hiss of air. What was that? You didn’t have much time to think about it before you felt the edge of your cot dip. Your heart began to quicken, but you kept your eyes closed, continuing to pretend to sleep. What is he doing? You felt a hand brush against your hair, causing you to stiffen your back and hold your breath.
“You scared me today, but I’m glad you’re safe,” he whispered, this time his voice was unfiltered and his breath fanning the side of your face.
You nearly melted at the sound. It was raw, yet smooth. Then, you felt a pair of lips press into your temple. You shut your eyes tighter, relishing in the moment, before he pulled away. The gentle kiss lasted about five seconds, yet you could still feel the warmth it gave. The kiss even lingered much to your delight, like a phantom pair of lips. The cot raised, the Mandalorian getting up from his spot. The click of his helmet going back into place was echoed off the metal walls, and the door swooshed closed.
You couldn’t help the smile that spread across your face. Well, now you know. You didn’t need to see your future written on that card. You could see your future clear as day, and he just placed a kiss on your head.

I challenge you to pick five Tumblrs in your social circle and tell them something you admire about their blog!
Only 5? I could probably do 500. However, that's determined by what's considered my social circle. I'm often in my head being incredibly social continuously is really a challenge of mine. I'm always actively marching to something, my flame of passion when I have it, I can do some crazy stuff but it diminishes relatively quickly, so I try to cling. But I'll up your thing and list 25 of my fave people. Ask me this same thing in a Month, I'll keep doing 25, until I do all the people. How about that? (If anyone wants to be taken off mention let me know.)
@eligos-venator
- Has one of the most intelligent and sophisticated minds, I've had the pleasure to know. Literally admire all his aesthetics, work, head-cannons, ideas. It's only a benefit that the dude shares some OC characteristics to my own (Winning features). I really enjoyed the short-thread we did. It was incomplete, mainly because of my faults. I want to actually be better to give him a proper delivery and RP worth his time, but he's incredibly worth the investment of eyes.
@mischiefandmystics
- If there was a Mount Rushmoore of writers who kept me in this endeavor, encouraged me. Sun'ra is one of them. His characterization skills, writing, the delivery and how believable his character is, they're masterful acts.
@mishivymendi
- I wouldn't be nearly tamed or as creatively freed if it wasn't for this gem. She broke my shell, I really didn't at a time ever see myself being anything really beyond a smut writer, but Mishi not only saw potential in me, but brought it out. Her stories and world's she brings to life are so majestically colorful.
@asymphonyofash
- My go-to. He's another pillar individual who saw things in me past just the obvious perception, (Probably second longest XIV RPer I know.) Taught me a lot of the lore, I shot him up and he's sort of become my stapled rock. He's right aside Sun'ra met them about the same, both took me under their wing's as I quietly observed and absorbed.
@lavender-hemlock
- We're always up and front with each other, never feeling like I couldn't say anything around, extremely rare to share that these days. Her gif's are legendary, something on my own terms I want to soar in quality. The writing she does is astounding. Character has so many mysterious pages that are quite addictive to want to explore and learn them. (Encore 20 below-cut)
@under-the-blood-moonlight - Her sweetness and artwork and overall is just a friendly presence to be around. I cherish them so much. One I can jive with more darker undertones with. She's one the most hardworking and ambitiously creative people. I'd mail them infinite hugs if could. Thanks for being you! @roxinova - I owe a lot of credit to her. She's constantly OOC and everything was nudging me too be more inclusive to things and involved heavenly. It's rare for me. I'm really horrible about that my autism sets me back socially, I constantly will be drowned by the next day and be reverted back to better off alone, that's my major crux and weakness. But her thoughtfulness, these things, aren't ever foreign to me, I do pay attention probably better than any would ever give me credit. She's a beacon model to have as a friend. @corpse-dancer - Haven't ran into many words with them, but her character, screenshot game, expressiveness, they're all a marvel to constantly see, alongside her attitude and bringing life character. I do think if I were better, we would click quite splendidly. They've recently reminded and motivated me to pick-up my daily-practice, or try too. Keep being a rockstar. @fair-fae - Few who wouldn't know who she is in this community. She's been in my opinion a huge core. I'm certain she's inspired many who weren't even RPers too try it by seeing her at the Quicksands or elsewhere, a tyme ago. Making no exception, I was even one of those. I used to be in QS every-single day and was often doing my shameless stuff. Though her presence first did show me there's a lot more. I admire her in all fields. Also appreciate her adopting me to the FC and her always thinking of others and giving events, or her aesthetics and portrayal, its the epitome of swan elegance. @thorcat - One of my most treasured friends. Been RPing with them for a longtime. There's never anything complicated between us or a rift of drama, it's just let's go and have fun. We really mesh well, I've welcomed nearly ever character and got the privilege to RP with nearly all them. They always open up envelope and help me, settle on back and just laugh. Whether used to be waking up to their characters humping my afk one or use randomly having a hardcore banter between Ufah and Captain and capturing them as a voidal pet. Memories with them isn't something I'd ever want to lose. I love ya! Never stop enjoying life for anything. @lukawarrioroflight - I get in the gutter find myself lacking motivation or writing, discouraged even... But I never have felt, I could ever do any wrong with this person, they bring the light out of me. So no matter what, how many hospital-beds I yearly visit, it's because of this rare nature, that I come back, even if they're the only one's ever to read my stuff. I would do it for them alone. @scholarlybreadbun - I've only been back recently and they've so much warmth. Their presence is the sun of inviting. The couple and posing all the shipping that stuff makes me even melt. I'm not particularly talented in regards to posing couples, but I took notice of them along time ago and set on quietly improving. Really like them for them, wouldn't ever want them to change that. Ideally look forward to be in their orbit longer so I can bask in them. @seascrapes - Been mutual with them for a while. Their aesthetics and character is all S+ level. I appreciate throwing back tagged prompts with them, one of many people I really think would be enjoyable to collab with any other seafarers. The artwork and pieces of Tal Brook, are breathtaking as ever exceptionally too, not to mention. Love your stuff matey, you're a king. @mai-takeda - Is a myth. Her absolutely sheer friendliness and her attitude, are so positive influencing, I was so thrilled to be welcomed with her and boosted by them early on. I couldn't see myself, wanting to exist where they didn't have happiness like the same she always delivers by just doing so many soft-things. Not to mention her writing... She's a whole world to throw yourself gazes
under. @zhauric - It doesn't go far either without the same breath of Mai, I could say about Zhauric. He's someone worthy to look-up and also recognize they're passionate and inviting, hoisting up literally everything. Could easily find any of their characters comrades with my own, or jiving alongside. Not to mention last XIVWrite, they slaughtered it. So enjoyable to read them all. I like how organized their blog is too, motivated me recently to redux my entire thing. @cadrenebula - They have so many diverse characters and their entire roster is vibrant and is imbued with a massive flux of life. They are able to encapsulate so many character's voices and portray them so effectively too, I really admire that greatly. They've made me think bigger and try myself recently at actually undertaking a huge roster of characters too. I've taken many breaks, but I always am so graciously returned often with them close-by and that's so incredibly sacred. I've seen a lot of people get discouraged or quit, leave, departure, etc. But they always seem to have a bigger house then they had last I took a break and I enjoy peaking in. @silvernsteel - Her artist and gif-work are awe-aspiring, there's little unrecognizable by her photo-sets and edits. They helped me even tip-toe into uncharted with giving me the recipes to try incorporating gifs into my arsenal. Plus so delightfully pleasant to actually talk with and just chill. I want nothing less in life, than the beauty they give, to be returned to them for eternity in all their glorious air. If ever needed anything of me, they've got me. @spotofmummery - We talk about passion or friendliness or overall a person to even remotely try to be, I got to include them. Their web-series and writing, screen-work, everything they do is fantastic. And that's furthered back nearly any I've met showcase or immortalize how just genuine of stellar person they are. I wish them always the energy to create and sparks. @snow-covered-moon - They've never been anything less but absolutely a diamond to know. I enjoy their character, their almost always abundant of energy that's very rub inducing. Their WoL character stories, writing, screen-shots, everyday they open up a new pandora box of joy, there's no mistaken love behind their character and that's infectiously easy to also enjoy something when the author does too. Always healthy to be around, I never feel short of vitality when they're close-by. @letheofthelost - Always cheerful or least encapsulates with me, they're a carnival ride. Just pure epic story-telling and engaging equally as passionate, constantly writing characters, not looking for anything outside of RP or anything really just being their selves, they fade all others. I love their presence, them as a person. Enjoy any character they'll ever come and throw under me, or a change of pace. Always feels easily understandable between one another. @crow-iv - Together we're an unfiltered, unstoppable wake of pure passionate writers and art. But I would say they're far ahead of me, in every regard. Already able to portray multiple characters in a scene and do such in-depth thinking, alongside even sketch or draw right afterwards or a scene. They're so talented, huge reason I set-out on giving them a Crew of cast and actual stories to-tell when I'm actually caught up and if they interested and we both have the room, I really think if further myself, I can be better and supply more for them to draw and I want to see them soar. I want to give them all my improvements and effectiveness. @trishelle - They've such a reinforcing personality and aura around them that easily bolsters anything that dares thinking they're about to be depleted so energizing. Aesthetics, characters, all them are so lively that further compliment their own mun's great welcoming presence. Worth hundreds of smiles and stars, keep high. Wish I had more time to dedicate to learning you! But I do notice and appreciate you. @fracturedfantasia - One of my people, I like to retreat and just talk my full
head-cannons with or learn, share insightful and inquisitive thoughts about philosophies and multi-culture things. Or plotting and in-general, they're a well of information and brimming ideas, they are every making of what makes a quality friend. When you can generally be open-about-all that's a real one right there. Their characters and tarot readings, I always would implore if they're offering. Thanks for giving me any-time. You're truly a treasure. @violet-warder - Never have even came to words with them yet unfortunately but didn't mean as a mutual, I haven't admired all their screenies, writing, or the aesthetics they bring of their character. Glamours is real end-game, I like all what you've done and put together. I care strictly about what represent and give, I don't want to see them ever think anyone want's them gone, they are abundantly so talented and possess things only they can deliver. I think recently came back too, and I'm glad to share, hopefully, overtime I can build you better up. Or eventually even talk, but I'm certain you are a busy-body person too, so we're relatable. @layla-grey - I have a lot of underline issues that set me back as a flawed person, but I've never not been anything but someone who's open, it's why I always do include my f-list in anything or etc. I'm not here to present this facade, and really don't care to be an image crafted by another. No one as of recently or now, am I close with as an RP partner or friend with then this stunning masterpiece. I never let-up on story-telling or anything so I can eventually use my Crew or other Characters, to give them anytime a master entertaining day, they push me to not be short-changed. IC and OOC I would devote my full attention too cause they've never shed from me. Didn't ever matter how much silence or anything, they're always around. And don't expect anything out of me or pressure. Just accept me and I equally share that sentiment, I want you to have everything in this world has to offer. ----- This is just a fraction of people, I've paid attention, noticed or know. I've been around in this Community for many years. There's a lot of things I could say about it, more probably then anyone else. But what matters to me, is recognizing the people who are here, that work hard, build others up, support, constantly are a beam. I don't need to interact with everyone, to know when someone is generally out for good. Or they're out for bad I've learned inquisitiveness longtime ago, I had to survive and remain afloat. I just go out and be me, and along the way, I get to find people like these, who help bring out the best me. I am nothing without these people, creators, writers, artist. I'm a terrible friend, horrible person, I don't have the energy to interact NEARLY with as much as I'd like with you all, If I could clone myself, or if things were different, I would drop it all to be in your orbits more if could. But, do know I appreciate you. And even if you ever do depart from this whole community or anything, know that anything you share, or give, that stuff does matter, somewhere, someone was aspired, if nothing else, by me. ONLY you can give the worlds you see and I am thankful. Do love yourself.
#I acknowledge you#Love you#Keep doing you#Asks answered#I'm the one guy who's never not going to be filtered or unspoken#To many people have left or been broken#Don't you ever think about it.#There's so many many more#But I'll recharge for next time

ice cream cake
notes: this is my first time writing for dick! sorry if he’s a little (or a lot) ooc. i adore him so much, so i thought i’d start writing for him. as always, feedback is appreciated!
word count: 1.7k
warnings: none
An agonizingly long mission had taken up the majority of the day. Everyone was exhausted out of their minds and had decided to call it a day as soon as they made it back. But you were still up, foot tapping the tile of the dimly lit kitchen with a small ice cream cake in front of you. A pack of candles, which were purchased before you realized they’d make the cake melt even quicker than it was already, had been lazily tossed on the counter beside it. You had snuck away from the others after the mission, running to the first store that was still open this late, purchasing one of the only cakes they had left.
Your arms laid crossed on the cool counter as a sigh left your lips. “Happy birthday to the loneliest Young Justice member,” you muttered, spoon going in to cut the confection.
“What are you doing up so late?” asked a low voice, making your head snap to the direction it came from.
“Dick?” you breathed as your eyes made out his form, trying to regain control of your quickening heartbeat. It was always hard to keep steady whenever Dick was around. One look from him made butterflies fill your stomach. Even when he always wore those stupid sunglasses, you still could feel his gaze. You gave him a once over. “I could ask you the same.”
You had been an admirer of Robin since his early days of staking out on rooftops with Batman, and began to develop a slight crush on the Boy Wonder after the two of you became a part of Young Justice. His constant flirting and banter with you didn’t help the small ache in your heart you’d get from seeing him. You always wrote off his passes at you because he was like that with almost everyone he met. It was all a part of his charm as the son of billionaire Bruce Wayne. But Dick’s blue eyes pulled you in like ocean waves. It didn’t take much for you to lose your footing and get pulled from shore.
“It’s your birthday?” he questioned, ignoring what you had said. Dick frowned when you nodded. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Well we were kind of trying not to die, y’know?” you shrugged. “Not something you just bring up while you’re dodging punches. Hey Robin, I know we’re in a life or death situation right now, but hey! It’s my birthday! Yeah, a little distracting, don’t you think?” You purse your lips, looking down at the cake. “And I'm not really one for parties, especially if the attention is on me. Everyone was tired anyway, and they deserve some rest. As do you.”
“Well, you shouldn’t be spending your birthday alone,” he said, walking over to you.
“I didn’t. I was with you all.”
“Fighting criminals,” he deadpanned. “Doesn’t sound like the best thing to do on your birthday to me.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever. Now help me eat this cake before it melts.”
He smiled, gratefully accepting the spoon you offered. The both of you quickly regretted digging in so fast, because before you knew it, your head and teeth began to ache like hell. Being superheroes and all, you and Dick have endured much worse pain, but pain was still pain.
You groaned, keeping the ice cream on your tongue to let it melt. “Shit- brain freeze.”
Dick winced as he finished his piece. You looked at each other and began giggling hysterically. Simultaneously sharing a brain freeze wasn’t all that funny, but a chorus of laughter began filling the room anyway. The two of you quickly forgot the others were still very much asleep, all too wrapped up in each other’s company. Your fit of giggles soon died down and you hoped you hadn’t woken anyone up. Most of them were heavy sleepers anyway.
“Maybe we shouldn’t eat so much at once?”
“Good idea.”
You soon fell into easy conversation and moved over the couch. The ice cream cake was eagerly devoured, in a normal fashion this time to prevent any further aches. The silverware had been long forgotten on the table as you traded childhood memories, hopes and desires, and basked in the presence of one another. There was something about Dick that made you feel safe. Nothing but him seemed to matter and all of your worries vanished in an instant when he’d flash you that smile of his, blindingly bright and oozing with charm.
It was so easy to fall for Dick Grayson.
There was a glimmer of hope that would fill you sometimes. A small wish that maybe he felt the same way about you. You noticed how his gaze would linger on you for that tiny moment longer, or when he’d smile at you lopsidedly in a way that was different from anyone else. The way that he was gazing at you now made your stomach swirl. He had pushed his sunglasses to the top of his head. His face was slightly flushed and his eyes were tired, but the warmth you felt from them was all the same. Dick wore a boyish grin. The distance between you was small, smaller than you recalled it being. You don’t remember moving closer to him. Or did he get closer to you?
A small smile tugged the corner of your lips. They were slightly chapped from when you licked the excess ice cream off of them earlier in the night. The room was silent, but there was something peaceful about the silence. Eventually, the exhaustion caught up with you. A soft yawn left your lips as your head gently laid on Dick’s shoulder. The soft material of his t-shirt coaxing you to sleep.
“Happy belated birthday, angel,” Dick whispered to your sleeping form, pressing a chaste kiss to your temple.
The sunlight shined brightly on your face, forcing you awake. You rolled over to escape its beams, pulling the covers closer to your body when a thought hit you. You don’t remember falling asleep on your bed. How did you get there? Your eyes shot open, a muffled groan escaping your lips as you realized that Dick must’ve carried you. You kept your face hidden in your pillow, praying to God you didn’t say anything in your sleep. Who knows what came out of your mouth, drowsy and most importantly, unfiltered.
A few minutes went by before you slumped up reluctantly, realizing you wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep. You rubbed your tired eyes and slowly pushed the warm blanket off of you. The cool air nipped at your skin, making you shiver. You scurried over to your dresser to grab a sweatshirt, and quickly pulled it over your head. You glanced at the clock before gazing at your reflection, taking in your eyebags and dull skin. You sighed, rubbing your face and began to brush out the knots in your hair.
The groaning of your stomach made you realize how hungry you were and you slipped out of your room to make breakfast. You were in need of caffeine as well. You didn’t run into anyone as you quietly walked to the kitchen. You figured everyone was still asleep. That or they had gone out early. But when you made it into the kitchen, you found someone.
“Good morning,” chirped Dick. “Made some breakfast. You want some?”
“Cereal?” you questioned, eyeing the bright green box of Apple Jacks in his hand. “Since when does that qualify as ‘Making breakfast’?”
“Oh shush,” he said sheepishly, running his fingers through his dark hair.
You walked over to the refrigerator to grab eggs, but it was empty. You sighed, hoping that someone will remember to get them if you don’t. After grabbing a bowl and spoon from a cabinet, you took your seat on a stool. You grabbed the box of cereal and poured it in along with your milk. “So...”
“Hm?”
“Did we go to my room last night?”
“Oh.” Dick laughed, his cheeks beginning to turn rosy when remembering the way you unconsciously wrapped yourself around him. “No, I carried you to your room after you fell asleep. I didn’t want to leave you on the couch.”
“Thanks,” you said, chewing another spoonful of cereal. “Also… I didn't get to thank you for last night. I'm glad that it was you I got to spend my birthday with.”
Dick placed his hand over his heart for dramatic flare. “I’m honored.”
You snorted. “Shut up, you dork. I’m trying to have a nice moment with you.”
He simply smiled and gazed at you with an emotion you could only describe as adoration. “I’m glad that it was me who you got to spend your birthday with.” He paused, taking a deep breath. “I have a present for you.”
“Really? You didn’t have to.”
“Just close your eyes.”
“That’s a bit ominous, I’m not sure if I want to-“
“Y/N.”
“Okay, okay.”
You closed your eyes in anticipation, wondering what he could’ve gotten you only a mere eight hours after learning it was your birthday. You felt Dick get closer to you until you could feel the warmth of his breath. His nose brushed against yours and his lips hovered over your own. You could almost hear the gears in his head grind before finally deciding to close the distance between you. Dick’s lips are chapped, but they’re still soft like you thought they’d be. You’d be a liar if you said you’ve never imagined kissing him before.
He pulled away and you instantly missed the feeling of his touch. Your eyes fluttered open, dazed from the action. There was doubt in your mind. You still weren’t sure if that had really happened. Maybe you would wake up again and realize that it was all in your head. But you were still here with Dick looking at you with love.
“I have to admit,” you whispered breathlessly, “that was the best birthday gift I’ve ever received. Can I have another? Maybe a really early one for next year?”
He laughed. “How about you can have as many as you like whenever you want?”
“Deal,” you said, eagerly pressing your lips against his.

Until Tomorrow
Summary: Quarantine by itself is lonely enough. Quarantine amidst a rainstorm of biblical proportions is downright depressing. Lucky for you, a visitor arrives just in time to keep you company.
Word Count: 2,463
Pairing: Loki x Reader
A/N: Sooo..... I did a thing. I’ve never written fanfiction or reader-inserts before, but it was pouring rain last night and I’ve been reading so many quarantine fics on Ao3 that I thought I’d give it a whirl. I’ve never been more nervous about posting a story before... I hope you like it!
Also, I got an Ao3 account now, so you can read it here if you’d like
It was raining.
Although raining didn’t seem to do the weather justice. You couldn’t remember the last time you had witnessed such a torrential downpour. The pattering of raindrops rushing down your slanted roof had been drowned out by the wooshing of the fast-moving river that a few hours ago had been your street. Between the dark storm clouds and fog so thick you could cut it with a knife, you couldn’t make out exactly how bad the road was, but the waves that crashed against your window every time a car came skidding past your house told you that you weren’t going anywhere anytime soon.
Not that you currently had any great travel plans.
You sat on the couch at your front window, a book lying open and ignored in your lap, watching water droplets race down the glass as a shiver raced down your spine. Usually, you loved the rain. You had grown where storms were a treasured rarity, where you’d insist your mother buy you rainboots for your birthday only for her to give them away a year later when they became too small, balls of paper still stuffed into their toes. Usually, when it poured, you’d run into your driveway with your head back and arms out, belting out “Singin’ in the Rain” as you attempted dance moves that would make Gene Kelly role in his grave, just because you could.
But today, you didn’t feel like dancing. With everything going on right now, the rain seemed less like a cause for celebration and more like a sign of impending doom. It had been weeks since you left the sanctuary of your tiny suburban house. You were lucky, everything considered— your parents were safely quarantined in your childhood home on the other side of the country, from where they FaceTimed with you at least once a day.
Your job was secure. That was one of the wonderful things about working for Tony Stark: the day everyone was sent home, the head man himself sent out an email swearing to keep everyone on the payroll through the quarantine, regardless of how long it lasted. He had even set up a system for delivering groceries to his employees: you texted a number with your order, and a few hours later a red and gold drone dumped a box of overflowing plastic bags on your doorstep. That was something your mom couldn’t get over—Iron Man bringing you milk!— and honestly the ridiculousness of it all made you want to giggle, too.
Sometimes, though, it was all too much. It had been ages since you’d seen anybody, ages since you had heard another voice unfiltered by the garbled speaker of your cell phone. You had never considered yourself to be an overtly social person, but damn did you wish you had somebody here to talk to. Your mother had been trying for years to convince you to adopt a pet, insisting that it wasn’t healthy for you to be living completely alone, but you had always brushed her off, saying that you were working so often that you were rarely at home and it would be cruel to the animal. Now, you promised yourself that as soon as this was over, you were heading to the Humane Society.
If this was ever over.
Outside, the rain kept pouring. The trickling water seemed to be whispering to you—sinister promises of something worse yet to come. You curled tighter upon yourself, pressing your cheek to your knees.
Let this end. Please, just let this end.
A crash behind you startled you out of your thoughts. You shrieked, whipping around to see a figure standing in your living room, soaking bags sprawled about him, staining the carpet. He scowled.
“Bloody rainstorm. You can’t see a damn thing out there.” He shook his head and began wringing out his hair, muttering in a language you didn’t understand.
It was several moments before you could find your voice. Once you did, it slipped out cautiously. “Loki?”
“At your service, my lady.” He gave a grand bow, his words dripping with sarcasm.
You stared. You knew Loki, of course. You were familiar with all of the Avengers who lived in the tower—your office was located on one of the higher levels, and as a result it wasn’t uncommon to see celebrities like Dr. Banner or Captain Rodgers making their way across the floor to meet with one of your coworkers. Unlike the others, however, you had actually spoken with Loki.
The two of you had a little run in a few months ago, when you were refilling your coffee mug at the break room. You were already on edge because Dr. Foster was visiting, Dr. Jane Foster, and word about the floor was that she would be stopping by with Thor to meet some of the higher-level workers at some point during the day. You felt silly for feeling so starstruck, but Dr. Foster’s work was on another level of world-shattering, and the thought that you might be shaking her hand by the end of the day had you all sorts of jittery.
Then the coffee pot exploded.
Exploded wasn’t exactly the right word. It was more like an eruption— all at once the pitcher just vomited its contents across the counter, up to the ceiling, all over the floor, writing like an animal and spitting out more coffee than it possibly could’ve been holding previously. With a scream, you threw the anthropomorphic pot to the floor, adding shattered glass to the absolute mess in the break room.
There wasn’t time to comprehend what just happened before he was there, pulling you out of the puddle of lukewarm coffee.
“Forgive me, that was not supposed to happen. Are you hurt?” Loki scanned your form with an anxious sort of urgency. There was a tinge of pink on his cheeks—if you hadn’t known better, you would’ve said he was blushing. “Are you hurt?” he asked again when you only gaped at him like a dead fish. “Burned? That was not meant—forgive me.”
“No,” you finally said. The coffee hadn’t been warm enough to do any damage. “Just… my clothes—”
He waved his hand, and the sticky moisture clinging to your front disappeared. You ran your hand over your shirt, now dry and stainless. That’s useful.
“Are you certain you are uninjured?” he asked. “I swear, that was not what I intended—”
“I’m fine.” Now that the shock had worn off, you found yourself stifling the urge to giggle. “What were you trying to do?”
Loki looked embarrassed. “My brother has the tendency of laying claim to the refreshments of any floor he visits, without leaving anything for those working on said floors. I thought I’d teach him a lesson.” He cast a glance back at the mess behind him. “The charm was meant only to react to him. I suppose I made a mistake in casting it.” He turned back to you. “I am sorry.”
You smiled. “It’s alright. I guess I could use a bit of excitement in my life.”
He grinned. “Words to live by.”
After that, you had been friendly. You’d greet each other when you walked by one another, you’d make small talk in the elevator if you were riding together, he’d hold the door for you if he had the chance. Nothing serious, nothing even that personal really, just office-friendly.
Definitely not crashing-unannounced-into-your-living-room-during-a-rainstorm-in-the-middle-of-a-pandemic friendly.
“What—?” you sputtered, springing off the couch. “What are you doing here?”
Loki dramatically gestured to the bags on the floor. “It seems I have been relegated to the status of a delivery boy.”
Craning your neck, you recognized the label of your local grocery market. You frowned. “Did—did you bring me groceries?”
The Asgardian in your living room huffed irritably. “You had an order for today, did you not?”
You nodded slowly. Yes, you were waiting on an order today, and now that you were looking you could see that it was sprawled across the floor at Loki’s feet: a carton of orange juice, a tub of ice cream, a bag of potato chips… but what was Loki doing dropping off food for you?
He sighed. “Stark, in his infinite wisdom, failed to consider the effect of such the elements—” he gestured to the monsoon outside your window “—on his mechanical messengers. As I am the only individual he knows with means of instantaneous travel, I have been encouraged to assist with deliveries. I am—what is the phrase?—making the rounds, if you will. ”
“Oh.” You found yourself at a loss for words, likely looking every bit as dumbfounded as when you first met in the break room. You mentally slapped yourself. “Um… thank you. Here,” you moved to collect to foodstuff off the carpet, “I can, uh, start putting things away—”
With one swift motion, Loki scooped everything up. “Allow me. Just tell me where you want me to put it.” You glanced up at him cautiously. He raised his eyebrows.
“Uh, okay.”
He followed you into your kitchen, and you cringed as you realized how truly disgusting your sink was. It had been ages since you had the motivation to do the dishes, and they had been piling up in your sink like the leaning tower of cheap ceramics for at least a week now. Loki didn’t say anything though. At your direction, he placed the bags on the counter and watched as you silently put the contents away.
Even amidst all the awkwardness, there was something soothing about his presence. For the first time in weeks, there was a living, breathing person in your house, someone real to talk to and laugh with. So when Loki said that he had to finish his deliveries, the question that popped out of your mouth was birthed by pure desperation.
“Do you want something to drink before you go?” you asked. “Like, a glass of water? Or… I have coffee, if you don’t mind it being reheated.”
If Loki was surprised by your offer, he masked the emotion quickly with a smirk. “Do you really trust me with coffee?”
You giggled. “I don’t know. Can I?”
“You shouldn’t trust me with anything,” he said, slipping into one of the seats at your kitchen table. “But I think we can make an exception just this once.”
You sat and talked for nearly an hour, sipping your microwaved coffee as the rain pounded on the roof. Loki had plenty of quarantine stories from the Tower, stories that always seemed to end with Thor accidentally blowing something up.
“He is not used to staying in such a limited space for this long of a time period,” he said reflectively. “I think perhaps confinement is having a detrimental effect on his intellect. Stark has installed a ‘Days Without an Accident’ count at the kitchen table, and thus far my brother has managed to reset it every day.”
You snorted. “That sounds hilarious. I wish I was there to see that.”
“No, you don’t. Everyone is fed up with everyone else.” Loki stared into his mug absently. “They have been starting altercations over the minutest details. It’s quite chaotic.”
You frowned. “Aren’t you supposed to like chaos?”
“When it’s within my control. This is far beyond that.” He took another sip, emptying it. “You are lucky to live alone. I would gladly welcome the peace you have here.”
“I don’t know. There’s not much to do in here.” You held in a sigh. “It gets kind of depressing after a while.”
Loki cocked his head, brow furrowed. “You are lonely?”
Your cheeks heated with embarrassment. It was such a menial complaint to have, especially when so many others were suffering. “Kind of,” you muttered. “It’s not so bad, though.”
Loki continued pressing. “You have access to communication, yes?” he asked, leaning forward. “I thought all of you mortals were addicted to your cellular devices.”
“Yeah,” you replied slowly. “But it’s not the same thing as, you know, actually talking to someone. Like, when they’re actually there.”
“I understand.” He reached out to set his mug on the table. Somewhere hidden under your smile, your heart sank. He’d be leaving soon.
Loki cleared his throat. “If you would like,” he said, “I could pay you a visit every so often, as we are doing now.”
What?
“Oh, you don’t have to do that,” you rushed to say, even though the thought of having a regular visitor sent your pulse thrumming.
“No, but I think I would appreciate the respite. Today has been quite lovely, if I may say so.” He smiled— a genuine smile, not a smirk or a grin—and you felt rather silly for the way your heart seemed to soar. “Of course,” he added quickly, “if you don’t wish for my company, I completely—”
“No!” The volume of your voice made you cringe. Jeez, he must think you haven’t spoken to anyone in months. “No, I—if you want to come over, then…” For a moment, you fumbled with your words, searching for an eloquent way to accept his offer. “I’d like that,” you finally said, giving up. “I’d like that a lot.”
He laughed. “In that case, I’ll stop by tomorrow.” When he stood, you stood with him, following him back to your living room where he had left the groceries you hadn’t claimed. “I do need to be going now, though,” he said, scooping up the remaining bags. “The last thing I need is Stark having a fit over my failure to deliver his employees’ groceries on time.” He nodded at you. “Thank you very much for the coffee.”
“No problem,” you said. “Thanks for—thanks.”
He chuckled. “Until tomorrow, my lady.”
“Until tomorrow.”
And just like that, he was gone. It was a noiseless disappearance: one moment he was there, the next, you were once again alone with the pouring rain. With a sigh, you made your way back to the couch, scooping up your book off the floor. Once again, however, you found your attention drifting to the water running down the window, the rushing waves of your street outside. Nothing had changed, and yet it seemed so much less frightening than it had an hour before. No, now, it was almost soothing. You had the sudden urge to run out on to your driveway and belt “Singin’ In the Rain.”
I should’ve done that while Loki was here, you thought sleepily, pressing your cheek to the cushion. He would’ve gotten a kick out of that.
Maybe you could, if it was still raining tomorrow.
Tomorrow.
You dozed off to the peaceful lullaby of the rainfall, smiling softly and thinking of tomorrow.

hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have, but i have it—ronald speirs
inspired by
(and my 12-1am contemplation)
@yeahcurrahee : Hey! I was wondering if you could do a Ronald Speirs imagine with the prompt “you can’t keep avoiding your problems!” “i avoid you well enough!”? Thank you!
when your feeling utterly lost, speirs shows you a side you're not used to seeing.
literally started writing this as sOON as i got the request because i was listening to the song and i was like 👀. not re-read it, not cut it down. my pure, unfiltered 12am thoughts. word count 2k because i don't know where to stop at this time. i hope u enjoy it <3 thank u for the request
there was a soft breeze that blew the sheer curtains. the doors to the balcony had been left open the night before, you couldn't be bothered closing them before slipping into your silk sheets. now, the rays of sunshine cast a heavenly glow on the marble floor of your room, and believing in a god no longer felt foolish to you. you, however, were not exactly feeling like you belonged in the paradise of that austrian hotel room. you'd spent your night tossing and turning, stripping layers of clothes off in cold sweats between nightmares. you now lay wearily in your bed, wondering why you couldn't sleep as well as everyone else. you were a lieutenant, for christ's sake. you were supposed to be training the men to go to war once again. but you were haunted by the images of the war. you'd seen almost all your friends injured or dead. chuck grant with his head shot, bill and joe with their legs missing, gordon paralysed, hoobler bleeding out, jackson in that dingy basement, skip and penkala being blown up—
breathe, you told yourself.
now you could barely look your men in the face without feeling guilty for sending them off to the hell you'd experienced. you had the points. you could go home. but you knew in your heart you'd forever feel ashamed if you left now. your head, being wiser, knew that you'd forever feel guilty for leading these men back into combat, after they'd earned long and happy lives.
instead of worrying about your inner conflict, you lay and stared up at the lighting fixture. there were three lightbulbs, surrounded by tulip-shaped lampshades. they were edged with gold, and they reflected in the light. you stared and stared, until your eyes began to drop. a bang on your door startled you, and you called: "i'm naked!"
ron speirs came barging into the room. "lieutenant what the hell are you playing at?"
see, the awkward thing was that you really were naked. you grasped the sheets to pull over your bare chest and a small squeak cane out of your throat. "i told you i was naked sir!" speirs awkwardly stood in your room like he was lost in the middle of a jungle and had stumbled into a foreign camp. he slowly prowled towards the dresser, lifting up a jewel encrusted brush you'd snagged and holding it up to the light. the reflection was cast on the wall opposite, leaving a glowing pattern on the cream walls. you sat up onto your elbow and stared at your captain. you weren't blind, you knew he was handsome in a sort of rugged way, but the delicate light from those french doors radiated a celestial glow onto him, making his appear angelic. you watched as speirs fumbled with the silver box of pins, trying to figure out how to open it. a soft click confirmed he'd succeeded and he peered inside, unimpressed at the contents of the box.
you wanted to scream. you wanted to tell the man to get out your room. but instead, you just observed him as a glint from your bedside table caught his eye. slowly approaching both you and the bedside table, he lifted up the best thing you'd snagged. a diamond necklace, four diamonds thick, with tendrils of diamonds hanging down from it. you knew it was worth a small fortune, because it was one of the most luxurious pieces of jewellery you'd ever seen. looking down on you, ron leaned down and held it up to your bare neck. "it's pretty."
"thank you." your voice was breathless, ron had taken that away. standing back up and letting the necklace clatter on the glass tabletop, ron's demeanour returned to normal. "are you going to get dressed?" you simply pointed to behind the door.
ron's footfalls were the only thing heard in the room as he grabbed the silk robe from the back of the door and chucked it at you. you caught it with one hand, and ron turned around to give you some privacy. he heard you place yourself back on the bed before telling him you were decent. as he turned back around to look at you, he swore he'd never seen anyone as ethereal as you in that moment. your hair was down, something he had never seen before, and it caught the light. your eyes gleamed as the looked at him, sparkling with something he couldn't recognise. your cheeks were flushed and your lips looked soft. “you’re not sleeping.”
“of cour—”
“you’ve got dark circles.”
he watched as you scoffed, walking over to the dressing table mirror and peering into it. “maybe i’d get less stressed if i was tested less.”
picking up the hairbrush, you slowly began to pull it through your hair. ron watched your reflection in the mirror. “why are you here, captain speirs?”
“why aren’t you with your men?” you paused, hissing as you got to a knot in your hair you couldn’t untangle, right at the back of your head. ron felt an insatiable urge, and indulged himself in it. taking the brush from your hands, your hair was like silk in between his fingers. he dragged the hairbrush through your hair slowly, and your head tilted back towards the movement of the brush.
“you never answered my question, lieutenant.” you hummed in content at the soothing feeling of having your hair brushed, and looked up at him in the mirror. “just let me enjoy this. this is the best things that’s happened to me since nixon brought me that bacon sandwich.” ron chuckled at the statement, and continued to brush your hair with a softness you hadn’t expected from him. the gesture was very out of character, but you accepted it with open arms. maybe you just didn’t know your captain as well as you thought you did. there was a clank as ron set the brush back down and you turned on your stool to look at him. he looked down on you with a look you couldn’t decipher, so you stood and padded over to the bed again.
"the men need someone else." ron stared at you from across the room. arms crossed. "i can't do it."
"why?"
"because..." you couldn't articulate what you were feeling. "i... i can't watch another boy die. screaming for the medic, or their mother, with blood coming out of their mouth and—" you cut yourself off abruptly in order to stop yourself from crying in front of the captain. he approached you, crouching down until he was at your eye level. "aren't you just happy that the war's over in europe?"
you scoffed again. "don't ask if i'm happy."
"why?"
"you know that i'm not." your traced your fingers along the silk of the creamy sheets, stained with your sweat and a reminder of all the images you'd had in your dreams. "at best i can say i'm not sad." you glanced fleetingly at him, with a half smile on your face. you wondered how your captain would ever understand how you were feeling. ronald was ruthless, to the point. he acted as every solider should, no second thoughts, no remorse.you wondered if he ever understand the guilt that hung heavy on your conscience, like a plaque that read i've murdered more people than i can count.
ron sat on the bed next to you. "you're a good leader, y/n."
"yeah?" you tucked your hair behind your ear.
“yeah.” he smiled, something you hadn’t seen properly before. ron had always been stern faced or shouting, but it was worth it for the smile. his eyes crinkled, twinkling like the constellations in the sky. you looked away from him and shrugged. “i don’t know. maybe.” you stood back up, collecting your clothes off the floor, and dumping them on the bed. “y/n.” you ignored him, picking up your army pants and folding them leg to leg. “y/n, you can’t keep avoiding your problems.”
“really? because i avoid you well enough.” a neatly folded shirt now joined the pants. speirs walked behind you, and you could feel the warmth he radiated on your back. his hands captured your wrists. “stop.” you turned your head to look at him, and his lips met yours.
at first you froze, and then you jumped back. ron felt a cold feeling in the pit of his stomach. had he read the signs wrong? “y/n, i’m sorry i—”
“no. i’m sorry. i panicked, i...” you turned around properly, “spilling my guts with... drunkards who don’t care about me... is the only love i’ve ever known.” he felt a pang if guilt, that someone as beautiful as you had never experienced what love really was. he looked down on you and murmured: “let me look after you.” you wrapped your arms around his neck. ron’s hands found your waist, and he pulled you back in for another kiss. this time, it was reciprocated. softly, gently, and with feeling. lifting you up and sitting on the bed with you in his lap, the kiss continued with more compassion and care. you pulled away.
"wow." your laugh was breathy and shaking. ron just grinned, hair ruffled and chest heaving under you. easing yourself off him, you could feel your legs trembling. "i should... probably get ready." a sudden wave of guilt slammed into you. you were enjoying yourself, and you should have been out there training your men. the men you were responsible for. your chin wobbled and you turned away from your captain, unable to stop the tears welling in your eyes. "hey, y/n look at me." ron lifted you chin up to look at him. "everything is fine. you have done your very best. just..." his voice softened, "hope for the best." you sniffled, and he told you he'd leave you to get dressed. as he was about to open the door, when you answered him. "hope is a dangerous thing for a woman like me to have," you said softly. he turned to look at you, "but i have it."
he left you alone to your thoughts as you got dressed. your ike jacket was a little loose, you didn't have the broad figure expected, and your hair could barely stay in its pins, but you looked a lot better than you had done for a while. your face wore a smile. going down the luxurious stairs of cream marble to meet the other officers, you were greeted by a slightly drunken lewis nixon at the bottom of them. "captain nixon."
"lieutenant y/n. nice lie in?"
"shut up." you shoved him with an elbow and he just giggled that dumb giggle. he held his hands up in mock surrender, "i'm serious, y/n. you're looking a lot better than when we got here." wrapping an arm around your shoulder, nix guided you into the glass room with the huge wooden table and sat you down on it. ron was stood at one corner, drinking coffee and consulting his map. you smiled shyly at you, and he smirked back. lewis seemed to pick this up, and he handed you a teacup and saucer and winked at you. you couldn't help but smile at the gesture, shaking your head and glaring. you sipped your tea and almost gagged on it. “christ nixon! stop drowning everything in alcohol!”
“sorry! thought it would be a good pick me up!” you stood up, leaving the teacup where it sat.
“i’m going sorting third platoon.”
“alright kid. have fun.”
speirs smiled and nodded as you lit up a cigarette. you felt pride swelling up in your chest. he was proud of you. and you were proud of you too.

GUY TALK (Four proposals)
Doug was surprised that Steven wanted to go on a ride-along. Not that he minded, work's been boring; not a lot of vandalism within Little Homeworld or Beach City nowadays ( not that there was much, to begin with), but since gems were semi-public knowledge (and he was close enough to be considered a friend of the gems), he still got (handsomely) paid to patrol the 'sibling cities'
So here they were, car on the boardwalk at night, coffee for both and a half Box of donuts between them.
'Wonder what is going through his mind?' Doug took a sip of his coffee as he glanced sideways at Steven's downtrodden and worried expression. His eyes brows furrowed, lips pursed, hands clenched in his lap. His eyes turned to Doug ever so often before facing forward again.
"Fifth time tonight," Doug muttered with a sigh.
"Hmm?" Steven looked up at him.
"Fifth time you glanced at me like you have something on your chest."
Steven flushed in embarrassment and opened his mouth, only to close it right after.
"Son," Doug started, " You know you can talk to me, right?"
Steven remained silent before sighing deeply. "I'm thinking of asking Connie to marry me...Again."
"Oh? Well, that's great" Doug smiled brightly, "You have my blessing."
Steven smiled gently, "I appreciate it." He looked down, " but..do you think she'll accept."
"You're worried she'll say no or..not now again?"
Steven nodded, " I...We've been going so well...It not perfect, but it's close to it...I don't wanna mess up what we have."
"Ah," Doug sighed, " If she does say not now.."
"I'd be afraid to ask her ever again." Steven rubbed his arm, " Maybe take it as a hint that marriage isn't in her future."
"would you leave her?"
"No!" Steven turned to him with a near disgust, " No, never... " He calmed, " Not unless she doesn't want me anymore... Can't force her to love me...but what if me asking lead to us breaking up?"
" I doubt that would happen...Connie'sctill looks at you like your the best thing that ever happened to her."
" I feel the same..."
"That doesn't exactly mean, I think she'll say yes..." Doug admitted, " She's stubborn, like her mother. Took four proposals before Priya and I got hitched."
Steven's eyes widen at Doug's words, who just nodded.
"You heard me. Four."
"How...What... Did you ever feel she didn't love you? How did you take the rejection well?"
"The first time, I didn't." Doug took another sip, "In front of her I kept my smile, but once alone, I broke down. Ugly crying, fetal position.. Playing 'fools fall in love' on repeat."
"You're lying."
Doug shook his head, " Ask Priyanka, that's how she found me."
"So what happened after that?" Steven questioned. "after she found you, that is."
Doug laughed, "Priyanka is a strong woman, not really one that would cry unless it was something highly emotional." He sighed, "That was the first time I saw her cry. Seeing me curled up over the rejection, broke her heart... To the point that she was ready to retract her answer. She was afraid I was gonna leave her...I was afraid I ruined us." Doug leaned back, "Funny how a tragic experience, reveals so much about us. It brought us closer, ensured that we wanted to be with each other and make a future together. It showed how extensively we love and respect each other."
Steven nodded finding relation in his words, Connie and he have been a lot close since his corruption, despite that being three years ago. Every up and down since then just served to either sweeten or strengthen their relationship.
"Hold on, Dr.Maheswaran was gonna say yes," Steven leaned back to Doug's level.
"I didn't allow her to." Doug started, "she had her reasons for saying no and the last thing any of us needed then was pity acceptance." Doug said firmly before smiling, ", Besides that we were both just happy that we still wanted to be together. The proposal, marriage..it just wasn't important at the moment."
Seven looked at the older man with pride, seeing the small grin as he rubbed his wedding band, thoughts of his wife clearly on his mind.
"Ok, but If you two knew all that? Why did it take you four proposals for a yes?" Steven pondered, he wasn't a fool. Even though they didn't express it as publicly as Ruby and Sapphire, or Connie and him; anyone who spends an evening with the Maheswarans could see how in love Priyanka and Doug are with each other. It was all in their visual communication...Though Connie and he had caught them playfully flirting more than once when they thought no one was looking.
"Now, I never said it took four for a yes. Just four to get married, big difference there." Doug corrected, "But to answer your question...Life." Doug finished in dramatic awe, jazz hands and all.
"Life can be a bitch." Steven said almost instantly before covering his mouth and looking at Doug, ashamed.
" What?" Doug arched an eyebrow, " You're not wrong, and if anyone had the right to swear, it's you." Doug assured, getting a grateful grin from Steven. "Plus, I heard Connie's rants so.."
Steven laughs a little at the thought of his girlfriend and her tirades on a subject she was strongly invested in. "She's certainly unfiltered when she's passionate."
"Right?" Doug chuckled, "Something she got from her mother."
"So. Why did it take four?"
"First...she wasn't ready, which yeah..neither was I. We were only dating seriously for ten months. Knew each for years before that though." Doug lifted his index. " Second, college. She wanted to focus on that and it would unfair to me to accept without giving it her all in preparation." He lifted his middle finger, " Third time, it was more of a drunk passing question. We were celebrating her getting into med school as well as me going off to the air force. So it was bittersweet." He stretched his arms up
"And the fourth?" Steven's anxious excitement was tangible.
" The fourth...She asked me, on my base, in front of my fellow airmen. At that time I had a two-year reputation of being badass...and her getting on one knee and asking me turned me into schmaltz." He laughed, "I was known as the crying flyboy for the next two years, and was always reminded that she was a keeper...We were husband and wife by the end of her visit but didn't have a bigger ceremony until I got back."
Steven was in awe, saw the two relationship in a new light (though he always thought that the Maheswarans were an admirable couple). "That's...That's wow. "
"Yeah," Doug breathed out with a smile, "You should ask her, Steven. I can't say that she"ll say yes or that she wants to wait, but you two have already gotten last a failed proposal, traumatic experiences, turning into monster, and even making a long-distance relationship work better than most normal ones...Even if it's a 'not now' it's in the cards for you two."
"You think so?"
Doug looked at the hopeful tweenty-year old, with an affirmative nod. "Definitely...My daughter see you as a main part of her future...and it not hard to see you think the same of her...Kind of remind me of Priya and Me, when we was you age."
"Thanks, Doug," Steven wiped his eyes," that means a lot more than you think."
Doug nodded, "No problem, Son."

college!au with Lucas
HARO EVLYONE!
it happened again. I did that. another college au is here and again, I hurt myself while writing this…… Lucas is so powerful, man… you’ll see how whipped I am below…
college!au; fluff c’mon it’s about this giant dork expect to sink in the feels sea; bulleted scenario; drinking game: take a shot every time you read the word ‘man’; 7161 words good lord thankfully it’s not over 9k or I’d be scared; LUCAS IS THE BEST BOY
summary: you might think that you have feelings for another boy, but when Lucas starts working with you, you quickly realize that you could be wrong about the perfect boy for you,,, or should I say,,, you are wong ;)
enjoy! :)
Lucas is popular at your university
he’s hard to miss with that height and that face and those muscles and this smile and that laugh
okay I think you get the point
he’s probably the most handsome guy on the campus and thanks to that, you can rarely see him without someone hanging on his neck
the fact that he’s a transfer student that can’t speak the language here too well is even better because - he speaks less = he seems more mysterious and that’s apparently what ladies like
on top of that, he’s just so positive? no one has ever seen this man sad or angry, he’s always smiling and talking to strangers as if they were his best friends
he knows almost everyone and has lots of friends everywhere; whenever he appears on the campus he can’t go 5 meters without someone waving at him
or when he laughs loudly at Winwin’s joke, 20 people in the corridor laugh with him
he has some great achievements as a swimmer; he’s probably the most popular member of the uni’s swimming team thanks to all those fangirls dying to see him without his shirt on and with wet strands of his hair sticking to his forehead
he focuses mostly on the sport, as he got in this university thanks to a sport scholarship and he takes pride in it
and you’ve never expected yourself to interact with him but the moment he walks into your life (and steps on it but wait for that) is when he starts working with you
you’re a bartender at a club popular amongst students; you’ve been working there for a few months now and you feel pretty stable at this job
sometimes it’s hard to simultaneously study and work, but you need to earn money to pay your rent and be independent
the first time he shows up at work is already intense
he seems to walk in slow-motion, his bangs falling softly on his forehead before he pushes them back with his long fingers
he then waves at your manager and smiles at him, showing his perfect teeth
you stare at him but you can’t even blame yourself for that; this boy is glowing, everything about his is so eye-catching - it’s literally like a world-class actor came in
when his eyes land on you, your breath hitches
you start cleaning the bar eagerly because you should at least pretend to be working right
and that’s weird - you’re usually confident in yourself
but, I’ll say it again, Lucas is like a god so that’s fair
as every good k-drama goes, your manager tells you that the two of you will now work together and since you have more experience, you should help Lucas a lot at first
‘sounds like I just got promoted’
'I won’t pay you more if that’s what you’re thinking’
you force a smile and when he turns away from you to look at Lucas again, you roll your eyes HARD, earning an amused look from Lucas
after they talk about, what you suppose are some organization matters, Lucas joins you behind the bar
'I hope we will work together well’ he says, smiling at you confidently; you can imagine that he uses this smile as his weapon
'if you don’t change your clothes, I don’t think that’s possible’ you shrug, not giving him the reaction he usually gets
'y/n… behave please’
you roll your eyes at your boss again
'okay, follow me, I’ll show you where you can change’
you throw the cloth on the bar and go to the back of the club, not even checking if Lucas follows you; you show him his locker and give him the clothes he needs to wear and he even starts to take off his T-shirt before you leave the room like he doesn’t care
you RUN to the bar again and continue cleaning it; Lucas reappears pretty quickly wearing his bartender uniform; by that I mean, black buttoned shirt with black pants and a black apron
you can’t help but check him out when he finally meets you at the bar; the curves of his lips go up automatically like he knows that you know that he knows that he looks good
you love and hate that smugness of his; come on, with that face you’re pretty much prepared for him to be a jerk
you put on your best professional face
'so as you may know, I’m y/n. I’m supposed to teach you stuff but honestly, I don’t even know what I’m doing here so it might be difficult’
'sounds great’
’ … just, make the orders and keep the place clean. if there’s a problem-’
'then I’ll just smile and everything will be okay’
he shoots finger guns at you and you raise your eyebrows; he laughs loudly soon after, covering his mouth with his hand
'that might work tho’ you admit defeated
'on you?’ he asks eagerly, the spark in his eyes reminding you of a child getting Christmas presents; you’re about to discover that he always looks like this
'don’t even think about it but our boss seemed quite whipped if you ask me. NOW-…’
okay, let’s be real here
Lucas is kinda used to people throwing themselves at him wherever he goes; that’s the price he has to pay for being this attractive
and as much as he doesn’t want to take advantage of this, he’s quite self-confident
so when he finds out that he’ll be working with you, there’s this thought that this job might be easier than he expected; everyone would try to help him out as much as they can, right? which means, he wouldn’t need to try too hard
and he’s actually relieved to discover that it’s not the case with you
you don’t treat him like everyone else does
you jump right straight to the work, showing him some of the recipes and you actually expect him to do well; but luckily, he’s ambitious and he wants to be good at this job so he lets you see the focused and serious side of him
that makes you change your mind about him as well; you were expecting him to be lazy and not interested in this job unless it’s about flirting with the customers but you’re wrong about that
you start talking and you find out the reason for him taking this job
apparently, he doesn’t want to be a burden for his parents and wants to start living more independently; also, he has his hobbies and he wants to be able to spend his own money on them
you’re surprised at how hard he works on his first day; he obeys everything you say, he’s careful about the recipes and even though he might not be fast and making them yet, he tries to learn them by heart; also, it’s nice to have a strong colleague that lifts heavy boxes with so much ease
but well, the girls start to go insane very quickly
when they notice that he’s the bartender, you get a crazy amount of orders and it’s honestly one of the busiest nights you’ve ever worked on
Lucas sends multiple apologetic looks your way when he sees how fast you have to move because of him
he tries to keep up as much as he can, but the girls just keep on talking to him and ask him questions and there are just so many things he has to do at the same time that he feels like he’s going to go mad very soon
BUT in the midtime, your tip jar is getting fuller and fuller with every minute and it’s the first time you’ve seen something like this
and even if Lucas makes a mistake and gives a wrong drink to the wrong person, no one even cares
the relief you feel when you can finally change out of your uniform after the night = indescribable
you’ve just finished changing when Lucas comes into the staff room, the tip jar in his big hands; his eyes are bigger than usual and he’s not even smiling which you find incredibly disturbing
'hey, y/n… that was crazy, right’
'crazy? bro, I can’t feel my legs'
'I know, I feel guilty about all of this so and I couldn’t even help you as much as I wanted to… so take this’
you eye the tip jar that he holds up your way, then his face again, then the tip jar again
'I can’t take this, we both worked for it’
'it’s not fair, I didn’t do as much as you’
'well, if you weren’t there I wouldn’t even get a single coin’
'just take this y/n, don’t make it harder’
'I’m NOT taking this’
'OKAY THEN, what do you think about that. let’s take the money and eat something really good together’
you furrow your eyebrows at him and your stomach growls with hunger as you couldn’t even go on a break because of the amount of work
'so it’s settled’ he smiles widely, putting the jar on the table before starting to unbutton his shirt
'okay but CAN YOU STOP UNDRESSING WHEN I’M IN THE SAME ROOM’
anyways, that evening you go to get the biggest pizza available because 1. Lucas eats A LOT 2. you eat a lot as well
and that’s the moment when you decide that you were completely wrong about Lucas; he’s such a fun guy to be with, talking with him is so easy and also dangerous because eating and laughing this hard at the same time is life-threatening
the first day of working with Lucas ends with both of you smiling brightly as you wave at each other before parting ways and you’re excited for more
what he likes the most about you is how unfiltered you are, how real and genuine you act with him compared to everyone else that pretends to be someone else just to catch his attention
while you, you’re clumsy. weird. chaotic even.
he still remembers how hard he laughed at you when you slipped on the wet floor which you’d just washed
but he also remembers how hard YOU laughed then, you were unable to stand straight as your body kept shaking with laughter and he decided to come and help you up but guess what? he slipped too
and your boss found both of you laying on the wet floor, roaring with laughter
that was probably the best icebreaker for you
ever since that unlucky incident, you find yourself smiling at Lucas more and more, even when he just asks you if you ran out of tequila
but he’s like that too; he can’t wipe the smile off his face and he constantly chuckles and giggles and whenever the two of you talk, you both radiate such positive energy
the moment Lucas shares his favourite memes with you is the moment you just know this friendship is real
when it’s one of those Tuesday shifts that you actually like since not many people visit the club then, you and Lucas can chill; usually, you either study or, well, look at memes
or watch something on netflix under the bar on Lucas’ phone since it’s as big as your laptop, sharing earphones casually; sometimes you just want to watch it peacefully but he keeps on pausing just to throw in some joke or comment that makes no sense but even then, his goofy face still makes you smile
he still flirts jokingly but you’re used to it
'can you take this outside Lu’
'okay but will you go out with me’
'I told you it doesn’t work with me’
'that’s why I like you’ and he shoots finger guns at you
he’s also extremely caring and protective; when you show up to work looking terrible as you haven’t slept in 2 days, he makes you go and take a nap in the staff room while he covers for you
or once, when an old man starts saying some nasty stuff to you, he just appears in front of you, blocking your view completely with his wide back and you’ve never seen him this serious
he stares at the guy dangerously and says 'I would like you to leave the club now sir’
and when the man argues and threatens to complain to the manager, Lucas just hits the bar with his fist so hard that the whole club shakes, making the man run away instantly
but when he turns to face you, his face is calm and bright again
'are you okay?’
he can be so cute also
you once find him studying something at work, under the bar and you’re like ! he’s ambitious
and since you know the topic pretty well, you offer help
you meet in the library and he randomly shouts EUREKA or AHA! when he understands something making everyone jop
and you’re like.. okay so that’s the last time we came here together
and when you meet in the corridor on campus, he waves like crazy your way, his face so so bright and so happy it almost gives you butterflies
sometimes, after you finish work, Lucas watches you disappear in a crowd wondering why you’re not attracted to him
it’s not that he wants you to; he likes this friendship and he finds you unique because of the way you act around him and whatever you two have is important to him
but he can’t help feeling slightly… disappointed?
there’s something Lucas doesn’t know about you yet
you have something going on with Jaehyun
and something is the essential word here
Jaehyun is known for being scared of commitment and for months you’ve been seeing each other without putting a label on it… but the situation exhausts you and makes you feel bad
you knew how he was yet still you developed feelings; how embarrassing is that, to get upset over a boy the way you do sometimes
you see him with other girls and you can’t do anything about it because, he’s not yours
you can go weeks without messaging each other, seeing each other and sometimes you even get used to your life when he’s not in it
but somehow, he always finds the moment when you’re ready to let him go and asks you to meet him
usually, it’s when no other naive girl wants to meet up with him
and somehow, you still fall into the trap
Lucas finds out about you and Jaehyun one time when he accidentally hears you talking
since Jaehyun is a member of a band that plays gigs at the club every weekend, Lucas never paid attention to how much time you actually spend talking to him - he thought it was natural, you knew each other well and worked at the same place
but he should have paid attention to how you talk with him
you just seem different whenever you’re near Jaehyun; you’re much calmer, much more graceful, either curling your hair on your finger or playing with the material of his jacket’s sleeve
so after Jaehyun leaves, Lucas approaches you with his eyebrows furrowed and you welcome him with a smile
'who was that’
’… Jaehyun, you know him’
'no, I mean that girl talking to him’
you lift your chin confused, your eyebrows furrowed now as well
’… I was the only one talking to him’
'that?? that wasn’t you, you didn’t snort even ONCE’
and then you, well, snort unwillingly and he just throws up his hands basically yelling 'SEE’
'come on Lu, don’t be dramatic. that’s what people do when they like someone’
'oh, pretend? I don’t do that’
you roll your eyes at him, finding the way he reacts a little exaggerated but you also don’t know how to deal with him when he’s like that
'well, not everyone’s perfect like you, Xuxi’
'listen, it’s not okay man. you’re a great person, you’re funny and smart. why would you pretend to be different? this guy doesn’t know it yet but he’s missing out man’
you blink a few times, your eyes not leaving his serious face; his chocolate eyes and pouty lips; the warmth that spreads in your body makes you feel a little uneasy and the only thing you can say now is
’… bro’
he swallows suddenly and diverts his gaze towards the exit before it lands on you again; his perfect smile back on his face now
‘want me to drive you home after?’
'HELL YEAH but quick question, will we survive this?’
'just look at me’
and he turns around in, what seems like, slow motion and when your eyes meet again, his playful smile has already changed into his charming, lady-killer smile
'do I look dead to you’
'did I really have to check you out to make this judgement’
'that was a bonus’
and he winks
you hit his chest with your fist, which was a stupid idea because his chest is way harder than you expected it to be, earning a laugh from him
he doesn’t know it yet, but what he said really moved you; you just suck at expressing your gratitude
anyways, after work you stand together in front of the exit, watching his big, black motorcycle
he zips up his leather jacket, his face so smug and so confident that you almost want to push him; he side-eyes you, the longer strands of his black hair meeting his forehead, giving him some retro charm
'you’re not scared, are you?’
'me? scared? very unlikely’
'I was just judging by the way you’re squeezing your purse now’
your knuckles are white now and your ears are starting to get red; you press your lips into a straight line from embarrassment and Lucas, again, chuckles
he offers you the helmet, his voice calmer and deeper when he speaks
'I’ll drive slowly. don’t worry, you’re safe with me’
you look up at him, your eyes reflecting the street lights and Lucas’ smile fades; he clears his throat before putting the helmet on your head, a little too suddenly
before you can put it on properly, Lucas is already sitting on the motorcycle; he pats the place behind him
'Lucas, if we end up dead, I’LL KILL YOU’
he shakes with laughter and your face brightens proudly; you sit just behind him, letting your hands wrap around his waist… in a completely friendly, don’t-want-to-get-killed way
'hold on tight, m'lady’
Lucas adds so much excitement to your life; you never expected yourself to be excited to go to work as you do recently or to watch bad movies just to make fun of them with him
and look at you know, you’re riding a motorcycle with him; your cheek pressed to his back, your hair blowing in the wind, with the stupidest grin on your face, doing something you’ve never thought you’d do
Lucas enjoys it as much as you do; the smile is playing on his lips whenever he feels your hands grabbing on the material of his leather jacket
it almost ends too quickly for you
'we’re here ma'am’
'what? already?’
'oh, look at you! weren’t you pissing your pants before?’
you slap his back jokingly before focusing on taking off your helmet; he watches you above his arm and your gaze stops on his side profile for a little too long
'thanks for not getting us killed’ you say, your feet finally landing on the ground 'be careful on your way home’
he waves at you, his lips spreading in a big, warm smile and he watches you until he’s sure that you made it to your block safely
because you’re so focused on Lucas, you almost forget about Jaehyun; he hasn’t messaged you in some time and when he shows up at the bar, you’re either busy with work or talking to Lucas and you don’t even know that it irks Jaehyun a lot
one Saturday, he comes up to your bar, leaving the rest of his bandmates at their usual table; the way he looks at you makes you nervous already, but since Lucas is at the back of the club, you have to serve him
'what can I get for you?’
'are you and Lucas a thing now?’
you smirk, grabbing a glass to clean it; his eyes are so intense you can’t look into them
'why, does it bother you?’
'of course it bothers me, the girl I’ve been seeing is constantly with another guy now’
'so that’s the problem? I’m the problem here? we’re not even a couple Jaehyun, and you’re the reason for it’
'well, I guess you don’t even care about it now that you have Lucas, huh?’
'and it’s you telling me that? you meet a different girl every week’
'well, at least I change them and Lucas? he’s always around you, it’s been like that for months now and it makes me look like an idiot’
'are you for real now? are you drunk?’
'it’s not something you should care about anymore, y/n’
and he pushes his body off the bar and joins his bandmates again with long, angry strides; only after he’s out of your sight, you let your body shake with the emotions and nerves
'Y/N DID YOU SEE WE HAVE A MOUSE NO- wait’
Lucas stumbles into the club but stops abruptly, seeing you dead serious like this; his whole face falls and he appears next to you in no time, his hands rubbing your shoulders to calm you down
'hey hey hey, what’s wrong?’
'I… I need to go outside for a bit, okay?’
he just nods his face but his lips become pouty which expresses how worried he is about you now; he looks around, trying to find a sign of what could have happened and when his eyes meet Jaehyun’s, he knows
he takes off his apron and leaves it at the bar, making his way to Jaehyun; he seems unstoppable
'oh, there he is. how is it going with y/n?’ Jaehyun asks, sitting more comfortably in his seat
'listen’ Lucas starts, his voice so dark that Jaehyun stops smirking immediately 'be careful around her, she doesn’t deserve your shit. if I see her hurt one more time because of you, we’ll have a big problem here’
and not giving him the time to respond, Lucas goes back to work
he can sense that you don’t want to talk about it, so when you come back to the club, he changes the topic and keeps you distracted
only when you’re cleaning the bar as the last task of that night, he says 'you know what, let’s go to a party! Yuta is throwing one on Friday’
'bro, I’m not invited’
'because he knew you’d come with me’ he shrugs, sending you one of the winks that you roll your eyes at
you sigh, cleaning the bar quicker now 'I don’t think I want to go’
'I checked my sources, he who shall not be named won’t be there’
your eyes travel to his completely calm and unfazed face; his eyebrows quirk up as if he’s asking what’s wrong
'did you really ask around for that’
'yeah’
he just shrugs, as it’s a normal thing but you’re once again overwhelmed with his caring nature and you have the urge to hug him now that you resist
'bad news tho, we’re working on Friday’
he puts his hand out in front of your face and smirk, before pointing at himself
'fear not m'lady, this face will get you anything’
and you just, scrunch your whole face from the cheesiness and reach to his cheek, squeezing it like he’s a baby
however, he was right
it’s a miracle but he manages to convince your boss to give you a day off and even if you don’t want to, you just have to go to the party now
Lucas feels responsible for you and he even picks you up from your apartment and drives you there
he tries to spend as much time with you as he can, but you get reminded of how popular he is and how many friends he has; every time he finds you and chats with you, there’s someone dragging him away from you
and usually it’s a girl trying to get him to dance with him; he’s too nice to decline most of the time, but even when he’s dancing with someone else, his eyes always find you
you stick to your group of friends but something’s wrong with your mood today; you just watch all of the couples - like Taeyong with his girlfriend slow-dancing to an upbeat song like nothing matters, their eyes not leaving each other for even a second - or especially your best friend with Taeil who you used to have a big crush on before, and your mind seems blocked
you spend most of the time with Hyuck and his date and they’re so fun to be with, you’re laughing a lot whenever you with them but you just have to leave them alone when you see how Hyuck looks at her as if he wants to kiss her so badly
you find your oasis in the bathroom
sitting in the bathtub with the door closed never seemed so relaxing; you take a few deep breaths and check your phone, finding no new messages but you look at cute dog pics so it’s fine
then, you see Lucas’ name on the screen; he’s asking where you are so you tell him
he joins you in the bathroom soon; he locks the door after coming in, and he takes in your current state; you also take in how handsome he looks with his dark hair pushed back with gel and his shirt fitting his body perfectly
'did you drink a lot? why are you hiding here?’
'no, I guess I’m just not in the mood for a party’
he exhales, letting his body rest on the edge of the bathtub
'sorry, I shouldn’t have made you come here if you didn’t want to’
'no Lu, it’s fine. the idea was great, it’s just that there’s something wrong with me apparently’
'what do you mean?’
you catch his gaze and you sigh, feeling stupid immediately; you prop your head on your head
'is it… because of him?’
'I don’t know anymore. the worst thing is that I knew it was gonna be like that with him and yet I still went with it’
'why?’
'I guess I just wanted to feel how it is to be loved without getting too serious, too real. it’s scary’
'you deserve to be loved for real, y/n’
he falls silent, turning his gaze away from you to be able to think straight; you watch his side profile closely, your eyes taking in every inch of his skin
'why don’t you have anyone tho? there are queues asking for your number in the club every night’
'I don’t want to hurt anyone. I’m childish’
your forehead wrinkles, your gaze getting so intense that Lucas senses the way you look at him and returns the look
'yes, you’re goofy and childish sometimes but you’re so much more than that, Lu. you’re so positive, warm, caring and smart. you make me smile so much, do you even realize that?’
you watch his Adam’s apple moving when he gulps, his lips parting when he comes up with the response
'would you date me then?’
the atmosphere is so intense that for a moment there, you think he’s actually genuine about it; after a while, you let yourself smirk
'bro why do you keep asking this joke is getting old’
'I’m just waiting for you to change your answer’
you’re almost unable to hear this as someone starts knocking on the door loudly and screaming to open up
but you do hear it
Lucas takes your hand in his to help you up from the bathtub
when you’re out of the bathroom, you go straight to the kitchen to grab a drink, not expecting to see Jaehyun there
but for some reason, your heart doesn’t jump in your chest at his sight
he eyes Lucas who’s standing behind you; the corner of his lips lifts up in an ironic smile
'can I see you alone y/n, or are you dragging him with you everywhere nowadays?’
'don’t start, Jaehyun’
you’re surprised to see Lucas this tense; it’s like he’s sending daggers Jaehyun’s way and Jaehyun doesn’t back out in that battle as well
he comes closer to Lucas and looks him in the eyes
'isn’t it difficult to like someone who doesn’t like you back? you must be hurt whenever you see y/n with me, huh?’
and Lucas can’t take this anymore
he pushes Jaehyun powerfully; his body lands on the kitchen counter and before you can apprehend the situation, Lucas punches Jaehyun and they start fighting right before your eyes
thanks to Johnny and Yuta, you’re able to pull them away from each other but their fierce gazes and shaky breaths imply that they might jump to each other throats anytime again
you put your hand on Lucas’ shoulder to get his attention; he rips his gaze off Jaehyun just to see your big eyes and his body melts
you take in the sight of his face expression changing so quickly when he meets your eyes; something in your chest rises when you see his lip bleeding
'let’s go, okay?’
you apologize to Yuta and everyone who witnessed this before going out of the house with Lucas right behind you
‘y/n, I’m sorry, they said he wouldn’t be there and-’
you stop next to his motorcycle and he halts too
'why did you fight with him? are you really this dumb Lucas? you could have pulled a muscle, what about your competition next week?’
you don’t notice the way his face softens immediately
'is it really something you worry about? aren’t you curious if he’s okay?’
you just let out a big sigh before bringing you fingers to the blood on his lips; he hisses with pain
but when he looks down on you, the both of you freeze; your index finger brushes against the skin on his cheek, and you don’t even realize it; his face moves towards your palm, wanting to feel your warmth and he doesn’t realize it as well
you take your hand away from him
'can you… take me home?’
the next time you meet at work, it’s another busy night for you two and you forget about everything that happened on the party because,, there’s just,, so,, much,, to do
well, you don’t exactly forget about what happened - it just seems like both of you ignore it
around 3 AM, it finally starts to get a bit calmer and you’re even able to go to the bathroom
you leave your phone on the bar and excuse yourself
and Lucas really doesn’t want to do it, but when you get a text, his eyes travel to your phone automatically
and when he sees Jaehyun’s name there, he takes the phone in his hands
he can’t believe his eyes, seeing how Jaehyun wants you to meet him again
he’s about to throw a fit, he wants to go out and find Jaehyun and punch him again right now but then
'what do you think you’re doing’
Lucas turns around quickly, exposing himself with your phone in his hand; you furrow your eyebrows, he gulps
'I’m sorry, it’s not like that, I just-’
you snatch your phone from his hand; your gaze stays focused on the words that Jaehyun sent and you don’t move
'y/n, I’m sorry. I just have enough of this dude and I don’t want you involved with him’
'why? why are you so protective?
'he keeps on hurting you and you let him, if I need to fight him again to change this then I will’
'it’s still my choice to make, you have no right to look through my messages like this’
'I feel stupid, I’ll never do it again, just…’ his eyes travel all around the room before he manages to let it out
'please, don’t meet him’
your shoulders drop at the sight of him like this, so vulnerable and worried; he plays with his fingers waiting for your response anxiously and your heart sinks
you delete the message from Jaehyun and put your phone in your pocket; you speak after gulping heavily
'I won’t meet him’
'you won’t?’
'it’s time to stop being naive. you’re right. I deserve to be loved’
one of the corners of his lips lifts and his mouth stretch into a wide grin; his hand finds its way to your hair and he ruffles them softly
'I’m relieved now’
'Lu, was he right then? is that why you punched him?’
Lucas stops, blinking a few times before he finally understands; he expects to see the disappointment in your eyes but when he doesn’t, it gives him the courage to speak
'I… I care about you, okay? and I don’t want to see you cry. I don’t want you near Jaehyun. I don’t want you sad, hurt or sick man’
his lips, again, get all pouty and his big, round eyes look straight into yours; this time, you welcome the heavy feeling in your chest gladly
you stretch your hands towards him; he puts his hand on the back of your head and brings your face to his chest, your whole body fitting perfectly with his in a hug
his hands travel up and down your back and you press your body even closer to his to get more of his warmth
you feel him kissing the top of your head before he pulls away from you and for a second your heart seems so close to exploding
'now, m'lady, it’s time to clean!’
'no, Lu, do it alone, I’ll pay you’
‘you can’t afford me’
and like that, all the tension disappears; you and Lucas go back to what you had before and act like the bestest of friends at work but also on the campus
you help him study at his dorm, getting to know his friends better but they also visit you two at the club and sometimes, you and Lucas don’t have the time to talk alone even
you go out to eat regularly after work thanks to the tips Lucas still gets
and you even go to his swimming practises to cheer him on,,, you also see him shirtless and suddenly you don’t mind him changing next to you in the staff room
you also cut things with Jaehyun completely; he seems sincere when he apologizes to you and you know that deep inside, he isn’t that bad
but he’s bad for you
and there’s someone so much better right next to you, someone that you would trust with anything - also your heart
you watch Lucas swim across the swimming pool, you two are the only ones there at the moment
when he finishes, he throws his arms in the air and yells 'YEAAH!’ as if he won the Olympics or something
and you laugh at him, shaking his head
he comes out of the water, drying his hair with a towel messily; he then hangs it on his shoulder and sits at the edge of the swimming pool next to you
'was I cool’
'yeah, but then you screamed’
'I just can’t keep the emotions inside man’
you look at him with your eyes smiling and he shrugs smugly
'you know, you haven’t asked me if I wanted to go out with you for a while now’
'you told me to stop joking like this and you know I’m obedient’ his hand travels to his ear that filled up with water
'the answer might have changed’
Lucas stops; he tilts his hand and presses his lips together, waiting for you to continue; you look down on your hands before speaking up again
'I know, it’s sudden and it makes no sense but I love spending time with you. you make me feel so important and with you, I can’t stop smiling… I just want you to know that I think I like you’
his expression doesn’t change, he’s still serious and he tries to find out if you’re honest by looking into your eyes
'only after meeting you, I realised that whatever feelings I had for Jaehyun, they weren’t real. he has never made me feel the same way I feel when I’m with you and I needed some time to realise that, but I finally did’
he brushes the hair from your face, a smug smile appearing on his face
'will you go out with me then?’
your nose scrunches when you laugh and you get overwhelmed when you feel his fingers tracing the skin of your palm before he intertwines your fingers
'I’d love to’
and you don’t expect him to screech the way he does, covering his face with his other hand as if he just heard the cringiest thing in the world
and you to calm him down but you also laugh out loud; you’re both not able to contain your smiles
he moves his face closer to you and kisses your nose first, then his lips find yours and he pecks them a few times sloppily before finally, landing your first proper kiss on them
he presses his wet body to yours and shivers overcome your whole body and you’re getting wet as well but you don’t care
eventually, Lucas drags you into the water with him and after you yell at him, you begin splashing each other with water and kissing and laughing maniacally
he warns you though
he says that he was never serious with anyone before and he might turn out to be the worst boyfriend ever
but it’s totally not the case
you’ve never imagined yourself to be so happy
he’s still your best friend and still behaves the same way as before; every time you’re with him your cheeks hurt from laughing and you can’t contain your happiness
he’s still caring; when you’re sick he makes sure you take care of yourself; he calls you after your studying sessions and keeps talking to you until he knows you’re asleep - because you tend to stay up late and then you’re like a zombie the next day
he’s still protective; whenever someone talks to you without showing respect, he just appears next to you and asks them politely to change their ways
his words might be polite but his gaze sure isn’t
he gives AMAZING hugs, it’s like your body melts into his and you weigh nothing; one hug of his and you suddenly have no problems, life is beautiful and flowers are blooming
and the feeling of his hand holding yours? indescribable
it makes you feel extremely safe and reassured like there’s nothing that’s impossible for you
whenever he laughs at your jokes, you feel like the funniest person in the world and you just want to make him laugh and laugh and laugh; his chuckles sounded obnoxious once but now they’re the best sound in the world in your ears
and when he looks at you with his big brown eyes, you feel so beautiful; when he smiles at you, you feel like you can do anything
you sometimes can’t believe how lucky you are to have this big dork next to you; when he falls asleep while studying with you in the library (yeah you take him there again), you count his eyelashes and trace your fingers across his cheeks and play with his soft hair and just, admire how handsome and perfect he is
he’s also unstoppable
whenever he sees your gaze falling to his plump lips, he just goes for it and cups your face in his big hands and kisses you hungrily, as if he hadn’t just kissed you a few minutes ago
he loves giving you random kisses
at work, you can be just making an order for something when he suddenly comes up to you and gives you a peck on the cheek unexpectedly and it leaves you blushing EVERY.TIME.
still, your random make-out sessions in the staff room make you blush the most
or when you’re explaining something to him, he just shuts you up with a quick kiss
and you look at him with a straight face because,,, you were talking about some real important stuff,, but when he grins at you and his cheeks go up like this, you can’t even be mad
he’s so proud to show you off in front of everyone; he’s always holding your hand or having his arm around your shoulder or just touching you in some way
and your friends are as positive as him, they love you
and whenever you interact with them as if they were all your best friends of 12 years, he just lights up with pride
the thing is, none of the people that had a crush on him before seems mad about him being in a relationship? they actually seem to love him even more because seeing you two interact makes everyone’s hearts just go crazy
you’re so incredibly sweet together, you don’t even fight
Lucas would hate himself forever if he ever hurt you; so,,,, he just lets you win all the time
there was only one fight between the two of you, early in your relationship and he cried and you cried and you just ended up hugging and comforting each other on the floor
since then, Lucas has decided to never start a fight and since you’re easy-going as well, you don’t really need to fight
you both shower each other with compliments and support all the time; your texts are filled with heart emoji and memes basically
but you secretly love the moments when you lay down in your bed talking about everything just before you doze off; none of you knows exactly what you’re talking about it but it’s just so wholesome and listening to his deep, hushed voice just makes you fall in love with him again and again
in conclusion, you’re so in love with Lucas and you tell him that for the first time after he wins a competition
he’s all wet and tired and not breathing properly even, when you throw yourself at him
and he lifts you up and twirls with you in his arms and you leave sloppy kisses all over his face
'I love you I love you I love you I love you I love you..’
'I LOVE YOU TOO MAN’
’…. is 'man’ your pet name for me’
and he laughs hysterically and you just shake your head before joining in
so yeah, you’re undoubtedly in love with the biggest dork of them all, Lulu
you once get startled when you come across Jaehyun on the campus; you squeeze Lucas’ hand to warn him not to do anything stupid
but Jaehyun smiles at the two of you and acts incredibly friendly?
you’re not friends with him but you’re in good terms; actually, you’ve heard some stories about him falling in love?
but that’s… a story for another time >:)

CHAPTER EIGHT
Chris knew this would more than likely be the last time he would see his friends for a while. The reshoots loomed ever closer, the knot in his stomach was getting tighter, and he was growing more and more unnerved at the prospect of what was lying ahead of him. He was determined to make the most of this night as much as he physically could.
He showered and made himself vaguely presentable, ignoring the navy Chanel sweater and trousers that had arrived earlier that morning and opting instead for a plain white tee and jeans. His favourite red belt made a special appearance. He began regretting his decision to allow his management team to redecorate his pad in order to make it “friendlier on the eye” as soon as he took stock of his open lounge. They’d shifted some of the furniture around, added some fresh flowers and balloons here and there, and taken down the photograph of a family trip to Disney that used to be hanging in the entrance hallway. There was also a distinctly sweet and fragrant smell of freesias wafting through the air. It smelled like Springtime and positivity. He hated it.
Just a few “unfiltered” photographs, they said. Nothing too intrusive of stressful. Now, however, they were looking to cover up the potential fall-out from his fling with Jenny after she’d helpfully announced the day before that she was starting divorce proceedings. Matt had taken to messaging him at half-hour intervals to remind him his house needed to be bustling with as many people as possible even if he didn’t know them all personally. He needed to look carefree, he was instructed, and unbothered by whatever may be going on in somebody else’s private life because it had nothing to do with him, right? Maybe flirt a little bit. Bring out the “big guns” and the Boston “bro” personality his fans loved to see. For God’s sake, just try to look as single as possible.
People weren’t due to start arriving until 7 but it didn’t stop Chris from drinking almost as soon as he had woken up, calling on Scott and a couple of his oldest pals to come and join him for some pre-party beers.
“Woah.” said Gary, walking in closely behind Scott, carrying a crate of Budweiser. He rook one exaggerated sniff of the perfumed air surrounding him. “If I didn’t know any better I’d say we’d come to the wrong place!”
“Are we allowed to touch anything?” joked Scott, mocking him by tip-toeing in past the guys.
“Don’t ask. Just do whatever you like, please. I need it to at least feel like it’s still my home.” Chris scratched his head in disbelief. It looked more like something featured on the ‘gram of a would-be influencer than the home of a 30-something bachelor who had no time for soft furnishings and Feng Shui.
“Bro, it’s your birthday! You could at least look happy about it.”
Chris wasn’t drunk enough to muster much more than a half-smile at his brother at that point but figured a few more beers might encourage him to lighten up. He must have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. He was about to follow the lads into his kitchen when he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. If it was Matt bugging him one more time, he swore he’d throw the phone out of the window.
Unknown 1.09pm
Happy birthday sweetie. Can’t wait to see you again x
“Who’s that?” said Scott as he emerged from the kitchen, beer in hand.
Chris just shook his head. “I have absolutely no idea.”
Gradually as the hours passed by, a steady stream of people started making their presence known. Most parties Chris threw rarely went off as originally organised but he didn’t much care. It was always implied that his downtown apartment had an open-door policy when it came to friends and family turning up unannounced. Hell, many would stay for days at a time and he wouldn’t care. If he was holding a party or a game night, people could just show up whenever they felt like it even if Chris himself wasn’t awake or ready to greet them in person.
The vibe soon started picking up and the music was louder now. Scott had made various playlists and was doing the duty of hosting people better than Chris, who had been glued to his phone on and off for most of the afternoon. More and more of his friends arrived with their partners and Chris would give them a bro-shake but pretty much leave them to it. It was...odd. He wasn’t sure what was going on but he was growing concerned that his brother wasn’t much enjoying his birthday celebrations. The table in the hallway was rife with gifts and cards, and the beer and alcohol levels were not in danger of diminishing any time soon. Chris had gone overboard on catered food but he himself had yet to touch anything. That was a danger sign, Scott thought. Last thing he needed was a drunk and melancholy actor on his hands this earlier in the evening. Thankfully, Chris perked up as soon as he saw his mom and Shanna arrive, and Scott breathed a sigh of relief.
“Hello darling. Happy birthday!” Lisa called out to him and embraced him in a typical motherly hug, all stretched arms and smiles, running her hand under his chin as he pulled away. “How is everything?”
“Yeh, all good. Thanks mom. You look great!” Chris moved in to kiss her on the cheek again before pulling back to allow Scott his turn. “Wow, Shan, I really didn’t think you could make that shade of yellow look even more grotesque but you did it!”
When she was sure Lisa couldn’t see her, Shanna flipped him the bird. Chris feigned offense before wrapping his arm tightly around her shoulders and walking her towards the lounge. “Baby sis, you can’t be mean to me on my birthday.”
“Ugh...I really can’t handle you when I don’t have a drink in my hand.”
“Then let’s fix that!”
Chris shifted past a few friends, all greeting him and patting him on the back as he and his sister moved by. Several faces he didn’t recognise so Matt would be proud of him, he thought. “So, is Sarah travelling separate to you guys?” Chris asked, finally taking one of the wrapped boxed out of his mom’s hands.
“I think so. Do you want these in the fridge or in the pantry for later?” Lisa asked indicating the cupcakes she’d been asked to pick up on the way over.
“Um, just leave them there for now, it’s fine.”
Before he got a chance to speak to his mother again, it was too late. He watched as she was grabbed by Josh and his new girlfriend and started to make her way around her son’s oldest friends, greeting them all as though she hadn’t seen them in years. Shanna reappeared next to him, rifling through the bottles of vodka until she landed on her favourite.
“Is Sarah not coming then?” Chris asked, more concerned this time than no one seemed to know exactly where she was.
“Not if you’re going to continue being a dick to her, she’s not.” Shanna turned around to Chris’s fridge and began perusing the selection of mixers. “Where’s the cranberry juice?”
“It’s inside the door.” He responded. Shanna couldn’t see for looking but finally located the carton of juice and poured a fraction of what she needed into the glass before topping it up with a very generous amount of vodka. “I was kind hoping to apologise to her in person actually. Is she still really upset? She hasn’t answered my texts.” He rubbed the back of his neck.
“Well, you were out of like, Chris. But yes, she’ll be here, I’m sure. I think she just had something to do first.”
Chris knew Shanna was hiding something from him. She was a terrible liar.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” He grabbed the glass from her hands. “I am not looking after you tonight.”
“Don’t worry, Grandpa. I’ll make sure she gets home safe.” Scott reappeared alongside them, merrier than before and holding a small plate of food for Chris. “Why don’t you ‘mingle’ mingle? Your audience awaits, kind Sir.”
Just as Chris was about to protest, his phone vibrated again in his pocket.
Unknown 9.22pm
I hope you’re having a great time tonight. The party looks amazing! Can’t wait to catch up with you properly x
*
At some point around 10pm, Chris escaped. He retreated to his little hideout behind a tree that gave him a clear view of his property without the pressure of being spotted by anyone inside. His phone had buzzed a couple more times and he was now sure if was Jenny reaching out to him. She’d been leaving little heart emojis on some photographs that had already appeared online. He felt a little sick and just needed to get away from the crowds, now tipsier than he was, annoyingly. He took the cigarette he’d bunged from a friend and lit it, savouring the feeling. In that moment was possibly the calmest he’d felt all day.
“Who are you hiding from, birthday boy?” Chris knew it would be Scott who would find him eventually.
Chris shrugged. “No one. Just needed the air.”
“Yeh right. Mom knows you smoke by the way. No point hiding it now.” Scott took the cigarette and took a slow drag before handing it back to him. “Zach hates me smoking inside.”
“Is that why you started running?” Chris smirked.
“Running’s healthy. It’s all about balance.” Scott observed his brother for a moment. “What’s going on? You’ve been quiet all day. You’ve only had, what, three beers? That’s not like you.”
Chris shrugged unconvincingly, avoiding eye contact before his phone buzzed again. He quickly dove into his pocket to grab it but shifted uncomfortably when he saw who it was.
“Somebody’s keen.” Scott didn’t need to ask to know who it was. He could read his brother like a book. “Can’t believe she hasn’t got the message by now.” Scott continued to eye him, unsure of what was going through his head. “That’s not what’s got you down, is it? There’s nothing going on, is there?”
Chris glanced at his brother and shook his head. He knew he’d been caught out and at this point he was too tired to deny it. “I still haven’t heard from Sarah. I’ve tried apologising and it’s like she’s just ghosting me or something.”
“Stop being melodramatic. She lives with your sister. She’s not “ghosting” you, you dick.” His attempt to lighten the mood between them fell flat and he realised humour was going to be wasted on Chris this evening. “She’s got a lot on her plate right now, what with Charlotte and work and everything. Just give her a break, OK? It’s a tricky think she’s trying to navigate here.”
“I don’t know about that.” He shook his head slowly, crushing the cigarette under his shoe. “I said she was being ungrateful.”
Scott sighed. “Well, that’ll explain it. Hey, remember when Shan was a teenager and she got all those letters out of the blue?” Chris nodded at the distant memory. “I think the one thing we need to keep in mind here, with Sarah, is that she chose to reach back. She’s doing things her way and no one is forcing her. That’s gotta be a positive, right?”
*
Sarah felt like an idiot. She had no one to blame but herself. She couldn’t even lean on Shanna for support right now and she didn’t want to disturb Audrey at this hour if she was mid-celebration with Michael. She threw her coat on the stand and stood in the hallway of her apartment, bag swinging low. She kicked off her shoes and took off her tights to feel the coolness of the floor on the soles of her feet. It was a small comfort. The text message was still showing on her phone that was grasped in her hand as if she hadn’t been staring at it for the past three hours.
Charlotte 7.52pm
I’m so sorry. I thought I could do this. Please forgive me.
Sarah had decided to arrive at the venue a little earlier than they’d agreed to meet. She didn’t know what she was planning on doing by deciding that but she just knew she couldn’t sit around the flat any longer, her stomach was tied in knots. She hadn’t eaten much of anything that day but claimed she was saving herself for the extensive catering Chris would no doubt have laid on now that his guest list had multiplied.
She had spent some time getting ready with Shanna and Lisa but left her hair and make-up quite simple figuring she could add to it on the way to the party later on. She didn’t want to make an unfair first impression on Charlotte. She knew she didn’t want to look like she was a party girl but equally so, she didn’t want to appear to have given too much thought to what she was wearing to meet her in the first place. She wanted to remain as casual as possible which was some kind of weird irony given what was taking place.
She managed to make a relatively quiet exit as Lisa was helping zip up the back of Shanna’s jumpsuit telling them she’d be there as soon as she could. They didn’t ask her any questions. She just left and got into the cab that was waiting for her around the corner. A little under fifteen minutes later, she was outside the bar, trying to regulate her breathing. Maybe Charlotte was already inside? Maybe she had had the exact same thought and was having one for courage before they met? That thought made her laugh a little. She opened the door and gave her name to the rep who proceeded to show her to a nice booth in the far corner. Charlotte hadn’t arrived after all but Sarah had a clear eye on the door, as much good as it did her.
She poured herself another glass and wiped at the tears in her eyes. She couldn’t believe she had been reduced to crying over someone she had never met. She couldn’t believe she had allowed herself to assume everything would work out despite evidence to the contrary.
Everyone was right. She was a fool.
She heard the door go but couldn’t face seeing Shanna. She swiped at her face as much as she could, trying to remove any and all hints of her crying. Shanna told her once she was jealous of how she could cry without her skin getting all red and blotchy.
She clocked the time and realised it was perhaps a little too early for her to be coming home unless Scott had shoved her into a taxi, which wouldn’t have surprised her. Loud music and a free bar were Shan’s undoing. She composed herself and waiting for Shanna to appear in the doorway, worse for wear, but everything had gone silent. Sarah got up and walked out of the kitchen, not sure what to expect but certainly not expecting to find Chris stood with his back against the foot, keys dangling between his fingers. He seemed smaller somehow.
His expression briefly turned towards guilt when he noticed she had been crying. He made a move towards her before ultimately deciding against it, preferring to remain still in her hallway. He looked awkward which was a feat in itself for someone who always seemed so...cool, she thought. It didn’t last long, though, a steeliness soon returning to his eyes.
“Hey,” said Sarah diffusing the silence. She suddenly became hyper-aware she was in the Chanel dress he’d given her to wear for his birthday party, the party she should have been at hours ago but instead chose to blow off carelessly in favour of meeting somebody who really shouldn’t have mattered. Shit, she thought. She was a terrible friend. “I’m so sorry, Chris. I really don’t know wh-”
“-You know, I could have done with seeing you there, Sarah. It’s been a fucking terrible day, I’ve had my team hounding me over this Jenny bullshit and having my friends around me would have made all the difference.”
“I just,” she wasn’t sure where to go from here. He’d become so cold in the last few moments. She wasn’t really expecting it but knew she’d pushed her luck a little too much this evening. “I had something I needed to do first, and-”
“I don’t ask for much from my family but the one thing I do expect is that they turn up when they say they’re gonna turn up. You understand me? It’s my fuckin’ birthday after all and you couldn’t even manage that.” He moved past her, ignoring the tears now burning at the corners of her eyes.
“Alright Chris, you’ve made your point.” she whispered. The room felt too small and Chris looked like he’d grown a foot out of pure frustration. She just wanted to go to bed and forget this day ever happened or at least get Chris to leave so she could feel pathetic in peace.
She could detect a faint small of tobacco coming from his breath now he was standing closer to her. “What was so important that you couldn’t make it? Must have been amazing to blow us off like that and please don’t tell me it was Greg. I didn’t think you of all people would sack family off for some fuck you’re ambivalent about at best.”
She felt like a scolded child. Actually, no, it felt worse than that. It felt like he was picking at her, trying to get some kind of reaction out of her but what that reaction was, she didn’t know. She took a breath and calmed herself. Her hands were shaking. She was pretty sure he noticed now.
“It wasn’t like that,” she said, as calmly as possible. “I’ve said I’m sorry, Chris. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal, OK? Your family and friends were there and I was planning on dropping by.” She pleaded, her tone striving to be a little more even. She figured if she tried reasoning with him instead of pushing back it might allow them both to get out of this unscathed but he just scoffed.
“Dropping by? Well, gee, thank you for making me an afterthought, Sarah. I really appreciate that.”
“It’s not just you that’s had a crap night, OK?” She shouted before reigning herself in. She really didn’t want to fall out with him on top of everything else. “We all have shit to deal with. At least people turned up to see you. They care about you. They didn’t just leave you hanging around, wondering what you’d done wrong.”
Chris looked confused. He signed and placed his hands on his hips, unsure of what his next move would be. “What’s going on?”
She could feel herself tearing up again, her face getting hotter by the second. She hated crying in front of people and it invariably gave her a headache, one she’d most likely fail to overcome before bedtime. “I arranged to meet her this evening. I didn’t want to say anything to anyone until I’d seen her at least once but, um, she didn’t show.”
For once, Chris didn’t have any answers. If he had been thoughtful instead of the selfish asshole he recognised himself to be, he would have known to have shut his goddamn mouth. “Fuck, Sarah. I...I don’t know what to say. I’m so sorry.” He took another step closer to her but she made no effort to react towards him. “You don’t deserve this.”
Sarah audibly scoffed. “Well, that’s a maybe. But hey, look, happy birthday! Looks like you were right all along! I’ll make sure to wrap it next time.”
“If I’d have known what you’ve been through today, I would have shut my mouth. You’re one of my best friends and I was just thinking of myself, like always.” He leaned against the doorframe and Sarah recognised how pathetic they both looked in that second.
“What kind of person do you have to be to reject someone twice?” Sarah whispered to herself more than anything. She gently banged her head against the doorframe in thought. She wasn’t looking for a response.
Silence passed between them for what felt like hours. They were good at being quiet around each other, neither feeling the need to dispel energy and not caring what the other was doing but this didn’t feel like those times before. She glanced across the doorway at him but didn’t recognise what was looking back at her so intently. He looked like he’d been suspended in motion and if it wasn’t for her tapping her foot on the wall behind her, she would have thought she had, too. Everything just seemed a little fuzzy now and there was a headache threatening her from behind her eyes.
Before she could move again, Chris had crossed what little space there was between them and went for her, his hands grabbing her face and pulling her into him. It was messy at first, their lips slightly out of line with each other and she couldn’t think, she couldn’t breathe. He’d taken the breath straight from her, it felt like. The only thing she could do in that moment was to grab back at his hands that were holding her face but she didn’t feel like pulling them away. Not just yet. For the first time, she had some power over what was happening to her. She was tired of being a good person, being vulnerable for others to use whenever they felt like.
She felt his lips slowly move across hers, calmer now, while she stayed almost still in his grasp. She felt one hand leave her face and reappear on her lower back and he pulled her in to bring her closer. They must have occupied less than a square foot of space stood like this. Everything was silent apart from what Sarah assumed was her heart beating or perhaps that was his? She couldn’t separate them at this point, a perfect fit soon only disturbed by the shrill buzz from someone’s phone in their nearby vicinity.
“Fuck!” Chris whisper-shouted pulling away from her, biting his bottom lip. Sarah scrabbled around to find her bag in the hallway before signing when she saw who it was. She took a breath so as not to give the game away.
“Shan? No, it’s fine, honestly.” Chris could only hear one side of the conversation as she spoke on the phone but could instantly tell from Sarah’s inability to get a sentence out that Shanna was drunk and giving her the third degree. He wanted to grab the phone and smash it against the wall. “No, it’s no problem. Don’t worry, OK? Yes. Yes, I’ll see you in a bit. Alright. Bye, lovely.”
Sarah had turned away from Chris at this point and looked down at the phone in front of her. She pursed her lips, embarrassed that she could still feel him on her. She thought she might have been imagining things but that was definitely his hand gently touching her on her hip where he’d held her just moments ago. She turned around to face him but one look into his blue eyes and she felt like she was going to collapse on the floor. She was pretty sure he could feel her shaking but he kept his grip on her, trying to work out what she was thinking. She just shook her head slowly and in confusion at what transpired and walked out of the kitchen, down the hall to the bathroom hoping to get some privacy and some cold water on her face.
She didn’t get very far. Chris followed her and grabbed her wrist, swinging her back towards him until she crashed against him again, unsteady on her feet. There was no time to think before his lips were on hers again, harder than they were before. He had his arms around her waist and started walking her backwards towards...something, she couldn’t register what.
She briefly resisted his movements but after a few steps or so he made do with the wall next to her bedroom doorway. He pressed her hards against it, his hands now back cupping her face. She could feel how hard he had become with the way he pushed his crotch into her in an attempt to keep her still against him. She knew she didn’t want to break away again, she was tired of fighting and was ready to let it just wash over her. She grabbed at his sweater with both fists and moaned into his kiss.
She shoved him until he felt his back meet the opposite wall. The groan that left him was nothing short of filthy and something inside her snapped when she felt his hands fist in her hair while the other slipped down to grip her ass. She felt him pull up the hem of her dress, his fingers gently skimming the back of her thighs. He grabbed at her just underneath her ass and pulled her against him harder than before until they lost their balance and she ended up on top of him as he slid down the wall and hit the hard wood floor beneath them. They’d have bruises tomorrow but they didn’t care.
He desperately grabbed at the hem of her dress again, this time to feel her soft skin between her thighs. Her skin was so smooth and not to the touch, he couldn’t bear it. She felt like she was on fire. He managed to pull her panties to one side but she felt them rip as she furiously gripped at the belt on his trousers. He worked out pretty quickly what she was trying to do and took over for them both to release himself as quickly as possible. In one move he placed her where he wanted her. He heard her sharp intake of breath and looked up just in time to see the look of pleasure on her face as he entered her, perhaps harder than he had intended to but she didn’t seem to mind.
Her eyes closed. He could see the blush covering her skin and her neck and he reached out to pull her face back to him as he motioned for her to move on top of him. He filled her, thrusting into her as much as he could from this angle and briefly regretted not keeping them up against the wall. He knew it would be over in a matter of seconds at this rate. They were both struggling to feel something. Make something of this godawful day.
He couldn’t take his eyes off the way she was moving. He felt her wavering slightly as he quickly approached his own release, her eyes open now and looking down at him. Their staggered breaths were the only sound filling the space. He was so close and he knew she would be too but he couldn’t ignore the look of fear growing apparent on her face. The glazed look in his eyes felt like electricity coursing through her veins. She didn’t know it could feel as exciting as it did to be encouraged along by him like this, his hands firm on her hips, gliding her up and down, keeping him firmly inside her. She had to look away and she began to move faster, slightly out of rhythm now, scraping her knees against the floor on either side of him, pain that only served to heighten the pleasure.
She could feel him throbbing inside her as his legs began to shake and his breathing quickened. The sound of them both hitting the floor over and over again only served to push her on even more against her better judgement. It was too late to stop now. They would just have to deal with the consequences another time.
He tried to hold off from his own orgasm for as long as possible. He wanted more than anything to see her hit her peak as he held her hips tighter and moved her so she could take him harder. One of her hands pushed back against the wall behind him in order to find purchase and it was this move that ultimately caused them both to hit the point of no return.
He didn’t know who came first but it didn’t matter. After a few moments, their breathing started to even out, their skin showing that unmistakable sheen of sweat that only sex could give. Without thinking, he wrapped one arm around her waist and stroked the strands of hair out of her face. He wanted her to look at him as she continued to get her breathing under control but her eyes were too tightly shut. He look scuffed up from their actions and his pupils were blown wide open. She couldn’t even imagine the state she was in. If he could have found a little strength to speak in that moment, he would have told her she was more beautiful than he’d ever seen her look before. Perhaps wisely, he decided to save that for another time.
Oh fuck.
Sarah’s brain went into overdrive as she gradually came back to reality. Chris was trying to figure out what was going through her mind as he felt her slip off him and shuffle herself to the side, pulling the hem of her dress down in a rather redundant effort to protect her modesty. Her underwear was left wrapped around one ankle as she tried to move onto her knees to stand up. She wiped at her mouth with the side of her hand and in that moment, he thought she might start crying again.
“Fuck.” She rubbed her face with her hands. He didn’t think she meant for him to hear that. It was the last thing he thought he would hear her say. He made a grab for her hand but she avoided his grasp as she stood and, on shaky legs, walked back into the kitchen leaving him ruined on the floor against the wall, shaken in more ways than one.
She couldn’t register her surrounding. She felt like she was about to throw up. How could this have happened? How could she be so stupid?
She held herself as she contemplated all the things she would need to say to him to try and make this better. No words made sense in her mind and those that did, she could barely string together to form coherent sentences. She heard Chris enter the room behind her but he stopped just inside of the doorway seemingly as unable to speak as much as she was. This was bad, she thought. So fucking bad. She felt embarrassed when she eventually clocked his messed-up hair. He looked dazed by the whole thing. No doubt his back would be bearing the brunt of their heavy mistake.
she finally reached his eyes and was met with a shy smile and a look she didn’t quite recognise. Was it pity? Concern? Regret? All of the above most probably, she couldn’t quite tell.
“Sarah,” he whispered, swallowing. “I’m....” He took a couple of steps forwards, holding his hand out to reach her, offering what he thought would be some kind of solace.
“I think you need to get back to your party,” She said calmly, deflecting the situation, tears forming in her eyes.
“Sarah, please, I don’t want...”
“People are going to be wondered where you are, Chris. You should go.”
Chris tried to focus on her face in an attempt to find something there other than the shame she was failing to hide. He wished he could get to her but the space she was putting between them felt wider than the kitchen they were stuck in. Resigned, he bowed his head slowly and turned to leave half expecting, or possibly wanting, her to stop him.

Thank you for the tag @kiki-the-creator @codename-mango and @voile-de-lune this gives me a perfect excuse to ramble and talk in depth again!
1. What do you prefer to be called name-wise?
Iris. Some people know my real life name too, so if you do, please don’t use it on here. I make a serious effort to separate my real life from online life.
2. When is your birthday?
22nd February
3. Where do you live?
Wales, UK. That’s how specific I’m willing to get.
4. Three things you are doing right now?
Listening to music, thinking in general, and considering writing/editing something.
5. Four fandoms that have peaked your interest?
LITG definitely, that’s by far my main one. This blog is a split between LITG and positivity. I’ll chuck Choices, The Haunting of Bly Manor/Haunting of Hill House and Taylor Swift in there too. This blog has way more than just those 4, but those are my main ones.
6. How has the pandemic been treating you?
Back at the start of the year, I was getting better mental health wise, and starting to become a proper adult in general. Then the pandemic hit, and my mental health fully stabilised and has mostly been stable. I’ve had a couple anxious spirals and anxiety attacks since then, but I’ll always have anxiety and depression, it’s all about how I manage my shit and not let it overwhelm me too much. And, ooh! I started my first year of uni in September, and uni in a pandemic is definitely a strange experience. Online lectures actually fit better with me, not having to struggle to hear is great.
7. A song you can’t stop listening to right now?
I’ll cheat, and go for two albums: Folklore and Evermore have definitely made my year! Those two have been on pretty frequent repeat, so yeah x
8. Recommend a movie.
Booksmart and Ladybird. I can’t remember watching anything in the past year, so here’s two recommendations from past years.
9. How old are you?
I’m 19, 20 in 2 months and a day! I don’t always keep a realistic count either, but oh well. It’ll be weird when I do hit my 20s for real though, it appears at the moment I’m likely to have a lockdown birthday.
10. School, university, occupation, other?
University and I’m mostly loving it! I love my course, and am so relieved that past me decided that English wasn’t my thing, or even half the weird stuff I got tempted to do. 4 years ago, I seriously wanted to be a child psychologist despite a dislike of children and sucking at Maths and needing a B to even take Psychology. I scraped a C, so Psychology was out, thank god.
11. Do you prefer hot or cold?
Cold by far. I hate hot weather and the summer with a passion. With cold weather, you can add more layers, hot weather you can’t do much, just get more and more uncomfortable!
12. Name one fact others might not know about you.
I want to be bilingual/trilingual in terms of long term life goals. I’m very slowly teaching myself French and Welsh. Both languages are on hold for a bit, but I plan to pick them back up.
13. Are you shy?
Yup. I plan words in my head when I do speak, usually the conversation has continued without me in groups, hell, even group chats that happens! For me to go unfiltered I have to be very comfortable with you, so if you’re starting to hear me talking about more weird stuff (I call it weird o’clock for a label) you know I’m very comfortable, especially so if my messages sound weird and I sound high. Which I’m not, just unfiltered.
14. Your pronouns?
She/her
15. Biggest pet peeves?
Slow walkers, noisy eaters, people who eat with their mouth open, people who move/take my stuff (like, I had it like that for a reason.), loud people, people being nuisances late at night, peer pressure/influencing people in general (I’m pretty damn stubborn, so if I don’t want to drink, there’s no way that you’ll influence me to), arguments, large groups, people who use me for a therapist, dogs (that’s more me not being comfortable with loud noise, things jumping up on me, being absolutely terrified of dogs/having a genuine trigger for them), people who mock strange/rare stuff about people (a serious amount of stuff about me is strange/weird. So you’ll need to find a different person if you want something not weird!), interrupters, being ignored deliberately, and I think that’s it! Phew, that’s a lot.
16. What is your favorite “dere” type?
I used to be into anime, but that was way too long ago, so I have no clue.
17. Rate your life from 1-10
Likely a 7/8. As my mental health is mostly stable, I can actually write and do creative stuff without letting other people tell me it sucks (well, if you hate my stuff so much, do you really need to tell me? Heck no, in my opinion anyway.) I don’t quit stuff just because I get negative feedback any more,
18. What’s your main blog?
I only have this one! My LITG/positivity/random crap one, which started as a mental health recovery/positivity and fandom blog, then gradually got more chaotic as my own creations appeared.
19. List your side blogs and what they’re used for.
I don’t use side blogs, mainly as when I used to have multiple accounts on other social media, I’d always end up sticking to one and neglecting the others. I don’t know how multiple blog people do it, seriously.
20. Is there something people need to know about you before becoming friends?
If your first interaction with me is via an ask box, it might change a little bit once we properly message. I ramble, and talk about a serious amount of strange crap just because it interests me and do spam a lot when I do create stuff, so if spamming makes you uncomfortable, you’ll have to give me a heads up. But also what you see is pretty much what you get, I’m straightforward in that if you’re an arse to me, or people I care about, I will cut people out pretty quickly. I have no patience for people who lash out at others and do set boundaries with people. On a slightly more positive note, a side effect of chatting to me a lot is that I do gush about people’s work a lot. If I love something someone creates, my motto is always telling them! I’m human sunshine for a reason, but even then I can’t always keep it up, so don’t expect me to be constantly happy!

Interview with Kelly Green, avatar of the Flesh.
Georgie : And welcome back, listeners! As promised before the break, we’re moving on to our weekly interview segment: Where are you now?
Melanie : We’re joined by this week’s guest, Kelly Green, live in the studio with us tonight. Welcome to the show, Kelly.
Kelly : Hi Melanie, Georgie. Great to be here, I’m a big fan. Huge fan.
Georgie : Why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself for the listeners?
Kelly : So! I am with the Flesh, I transitioned right when the Eye came through, like a lot of people did. I was already well on my way by that point. I used to be a beauty vlogger, I’d just been researching for my Halloween special right around then. Practically napping in a takeaway box when the Flesh came to collect.
Georgie : Classic. That’s a good lead-in for our first question, which is something we ask all our guests. Where were you when the world ended?
Kelly : I ah, I was walking my dog. I’d spent the whole morning sifting through Pinterest for monster prosthetics, and I wanted to clear my head. None of them really did the trick for me. They weren’t realistic enough.
Melanie : I think I see where this is going.
Kelly : Right, right! So I caught my reflection in this big shop window, and I couldn’t stop staring at it. I kept thinking, what if I just did the whole thing with my hands? Next thing I remember, I’m covered in blood and I’ve got two extra mouths.
Georgie : Something I’m sure a lot of our listeners can relate to.
Kelly : Naturally.
Melanie : Is your dog okay?
Kelly : Erhm, I’m not sure. She ran off into the Vast a few days later. Sort of gives a new meaning to the whole “great doghouse in the sky” euphemism, doesn’t it?
Georgie : Well, I’ll bet she’s doing just fine up there.
Kelly : That’s nice of you to say. If anyone sees a miniature greyhound floating around, give her my best.
Georgie : Now, you’ve been doing pretty well for yourself, that’s the impression I got when we were setting up this interview.
Kelly : Oh, yeah! I mean, it’s had its rough spots, just like anything else. I miss Starbucks. Hard to find my favorite shampoo, nowadays. But it’s been good, mostly. You know, it’s kind of a relief to be able to take walks at night now that I’m one of the scarier things in the neighborhood.
Georgie : Heh, I’m sure. What are some tips you can give our listeners for making the best of the apocalypse?
Kelly : Buddy system. Hands-down. If you do any one thing, find a friend and stick with them. My life got so much better when I met my girlfriend.
Melanie : Cheers, mate! That’s just how it is with girlfriends.
Georgie : Auwww, love.
Kelly : It’s true though! I feel safer, I’m happier, more fulfilled, all that. She was really interested in my patron, and sharing that with someone is just so meaningful, not to mention learning how it crosses over with hers.
Melanie : Can I ask what she’s with?
Kelly : Oh, she’s a hunter.
Georgie : Very exciting!
Kelly : Funny story, really. When we first met, she was trying to rip me limb from limb, but I could tell just by looking at her that she was smitten with what I’d done with my teeth.
Georgie : You certainly do have a lot of them.
Kelly : Thanks! You should see hers, she’s a real artist about the whole thing. Anyway, she chased me around for a bit, we had a fight to the death, and, well, all that aggressive tension turned into… a date! I took her straight to this cute little park I’d had in mind, so I could give her back the leg I’d torn off. We’ve been together ever since.
Melanie : Sounds like you two are very close.
Kelly : I actually brought some of her with me tonight. This right here- that’s one of her arms.
Georgie : Ooh, the claws are lovely.
Kelly : Aren’t they just?
Georgie : Do you mind if I-
Kelly : No, go ahead.
Georgie : Mel, feel this, here.
Melanie : Oh, wow! It’s so soft, but also, very sharp. Like a cat.
Georgie : Did you help her with that, or is that from the Hunt?
Kelly : That’s all Hunt, yeah! All-natural. I’d be jealous if I wasn’t so impressed. Caitlin’s really something special, I tell you. I did do some work on a few of her packmates, though. That won them over right quick.
Georgie : Buddy system?
Kelly : Right, the more the better. I mean, obviously your mileage may vary if you’re in with the Lonely. But you’d be surprised how much you have in common with the other crimes against nature out there. If a monster hunter and a great hulking monster like me can make it work, well, what does that say for the rest of us?
Georgie : Well, Kelly, you’ve been no monster to us. It was great to have you on the show.
Kelly : Thank you so much for having me.
Melanie : We asked you where you were when all this started, now we get to ask you the question we named this whole segment after. Where are you now?
Kelly : Living my truth, really. I’m on the lookout for a sharp new jawline, and maybe my dog, and I’m doing my best to appreciate all the wonderful things I’ve got. Caitlin, if you’re listening to this, I love you baby!
Georgie : If you’re just tuning in, that was Kelly Green, an avatar of the Flesh here to give you all some advice about life and love. Next week, we’re joined by Desmond, with some hot cooking tips straight from the Desolation. Join us to find out which monsters are safe to eat, and which ones are better not to bother with.
Melanie : Spoilers, it’s not the ones you’d think.
Georgie : We’re going to move on to our graveyard segment, two hours of smooth, unfiltered jazz. I’ve been Georgie-
Melanie : -and I’m Melanie.
Georgie : And, as always, be brave, and keep each other safe out there.
#someone mentioned these two having a radio show#and I absolutely fell in love with the idea#psst pls tell me if you have ideas for characters you want interviewed#tma#the magnus archives#fanfiction

Just A Typo (11/?)
Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Hacker!Reader
Summary: It was a simple challenge between a very competitive group of friends. A challenge that ended very differently than anticipated.
Warnings: A cliché trope and a lot of shouting
Word Count: 2106
A/N: I promise the gif is accurate for this part.
“I don’t get why you can’t just ask him out,” Becca whined as she glared at me across the table. We were sitting in Angie’s apartment which was a refreshing change from the high-tech atmosphere of the tower. After begging and pleading and annoying Tony for nearly eleven hours straight, he finally agreed I could leave for a few hours, provided I was brought there and back. He didn’t seem to appreciate me persistently hanging around his lab.
We were talking about Bucky. Again. It's not as though I was the one to bring him up. Since Becca visited me in the tower last week, she’s been more determined than ever to make something happen between Bucky and I. Somehow, she managed to convince Angie to join her on her mission. So now I had to deal with the pair of them constantly inserting themselves into my love life. Or lack of.
“I can’t do that,” I scoffed. “It's Bucky. He’s not looking for anything like that. I'm just grateful he talks to me at all. He’s pretty quiet with most people.
Angie clapped her hands together. “There, you said it yourself. He doesn’t talk to many people, but he talks to you. He clearly likes your company, judging by what Becca said happened last week.”
“Oh please,” I waved her off. “Becca exaggerates everything- “
“Hey!”
“- nothing happened. He was just curious about what I was doing on my laptop, so I showed him. What’s the big deal?”
“The big deal is that, for a very empty corridor, you both were sitting awfully close to each other,” Becca replied, smirking at my flustered face while I struggled to come up with an excuse.
“Why don’t you just focus on your own love life?”
“Oh I am, trust me.” She grinned proudly, nodding in Angie’s direction who just gave me an exhausted look.
“Becca’s decided to join my gym,” she explained. “She picked me up last week and has now fallen head over heels for another woman who goes there.”
“We’re soulmates! I can feel it,” she defended. I simply rolled my eyes. This wasn’t unusual for Becca. She caught sight of a woman in the grocery store or in the bank and promptly fell for them. It was endearing how passionate she could be, but it didn’t make it any easier when the relationship ended and Angie and I were left to help her move on.
“But for once Y/N's life is more interesting than mine so that’s my current priority.” Before I had the chance to interrupt and disagree with her, she went on. “Look, you're clearly a mess and have no idea what to do with all your feelings- “
“Oh dear God, are you about to give me the talk?”
“- so why don’t you write it down.”
I rolled my eyes at Angie who shrugged in reply, not bothering to hide it from Becca. “What?”
She grabbed my laptop from the bag I brought with me and opened it up. After a few moments of her messing around on it, she looked up at me and cooed, “Aw, you have his email.”
“What are you doing,” I questioned, trying to sneak a peek at my laptop but she moved and sat away from the pair of us.
“Ok, say we write an email to him. But we don’t actually send it, of course,” she added quickly, noticing how I was about to interject from her first statement alone. “That way you can get everything out there so you know what to do. You can practice how to ask him out.
I laughed nervously, chewing on my bottom lip and glancing at Angie for support. “I mean, it couldn’t hurt.”
“Great!” Becca clapped her hands in glee. The pure joy that was radiating off her was shocking. She loved playing matchmaker a bit too much. “We’ll start it off simply. ‘My dearest Bucky, my loins burn in your presence- “
“What the hell!” “Why would you write that!” Angie and I yelled at the same time. I stared at Becca incredulously. “I want a date with this guy, not a restraining order.”
“Then tell me what you want me to write.”
That’s how the next hour or so went; with me baring my heart and soul while Becca told me I sounded like an idiot and needed to rephrase. Angie chimed in every so often with a “Becca, shut the hell up” or a supportive “that sounds great!”
Together, we broke everything down. We went through it step by step, word by word. It wasn’t uncommon for me to start blabbering before stopping myself and telling Becca to delete everything I just said. I was surprised with how helpful I found it. Admitting to myself and my friends that there was a slight possibility there was a spark between Bucky and I was almost therapeutic. And definitely healthier than the whole ‘lock it in a box’ schtick.
“And I was wondering if you drink? Well, obviously you do. Y’know, you’d be dead if you didn’t drink water. But other drinks. With people,” I rambled on and rubbed a hand over my face. “Scratch everything I just said, that was so dumb. Just end it with ‘I’d like to get a drink with you sometime’.”
“And that’s that,” Becca announced, mockingly wiping a tear from her eye. “I'm so proud that not all of that sounded moronic.”
“Gee, thanks for your undying support,” I replied sarcastically as she rolled her eyes.
“So, all you have to do is say to him everything you said here. You’ve already done it once. The hardest part is honesty. Now you’ve been honest with yourself, you can be honest with others.”
“If I'm being honest, Angie, you need to stop reading those motivational books. You're starting to sound like you swallowed a few dozen of them,” I commented. I turned to Becca. “You can shut the laptop off now. I think I should just go talk to Bucky while I'm in the right head-space.”
She shot me a thumbs up and went to exit our work. I was putting on my jacket when I heard the ping from the laptop.
It was like a scene from the most cliché movie ever. We all turned to stare at one another at the exact same moment, mouths agape in horror. Becca was glancing from the screen and back to our alarmed faces. She did this several more times before any of us did anything.
“Wha- please, please, please tell me that was not what I think it was,” I managed to sputter out. Angie clutched her scarf as though it was the only thing tethering her to the ground. I appreciated her dramatics on my behalf.
“I am so sorry,” Becca whispered. “I thought it was the delete button.”
“NO!”
I rushed over to where Becca was cowering and looked at the open email that now had a little ‘sent’ button in the corner. I quickly scrolled through, hoping it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be. It was worse.
“Wait, you didn’t even delete the stuff I told you to cut out!”
Oh, it was much worse.
“Maybe it's not that bad,” Angie offered.
“Well, Bucky’s gonna see that I said, ‘shall I compare thy ass to a summer’s day?’, so that’s not ideal,” I exclaimed, giving Angie a pointed look.
This was horrible.
“Don’t forget the whole ‘burning loins’ part.”
It was this moment I decided I hated my friends.
Angie sensed that I was about to throw Becca out the nearest window and rushed over, struggling to think of how to console me. “ It's going to be alright. First things first, does he check his emails often?”
I snorted. “He’s like a hundred years old. I think he forgets he has an email half the time.”
“Great. So we just hack into Bucky’s phone and delete the email. Simple,” Angie said as if it was the easiest thing in the world. Becca and I shared a look. It did sound pretty simple when she put it like that. Technically, cyber security was what I did for a living now. And this was technically a cyber threat. To my happiness. How hard could it be to delete an email?
“The only thing is, Tony set up all the tech in the tower to be much more difficult to breach ever since what happened with us. I helped him make every electronic more secure. You have to be in the building and have whatever it is you're hacking into in your possession.”
“Field trip to the tower to save your relationship. Yay,” Becca said quietly, waving her hands slightly in mock excitement. She was still hiding behind a cushion, scared that the second she came out I would attack her.
She wasn’t wrong.
~~~~~
We somehow managed to make it inside the tower without anyone being suspicious of our behaviour. We all seemed to realise that we would we terrible spies; we couldn’t lie for shit. At least, Becca and I couldn’t. Angie was a lot calmer, acting like her true neutral self. She was able to whisk me away from a colleague who had said hi to me and I replied with a very loud “I work here!”
It wasn’t that difficult to get Bucky’s phone. I was just glad we didn’t bump into anyone on the way to the gym. While I was distracted watching him with the weights, my ever-faithful friends snuck over to take his phone which was lying on the bench. His hair was tied up in a bun, which was a style he hadn’t tried before but damn, it was definitely working for him.
“Hey, you still don’t want that restraining order, right,” Angie hissed, snapping me out of my trance and beckoning me to leave with them.
~~~~~
“We should be good here,” I told them, closing over the door to Tony’s lab. We headed towards the back where we would be less likely to be seen. “Pepper’s been giving out to Tony about the lack of breaks he takes from work, so she’s dragged him away for a few hours at least. I think my nagging earlier might have had something to do with it too.”
We hooked the phone up to my laptop and, with three expert hackers working on it, we unlocked it quickly.
“That wasn’t as difficult as I thought it would be,” I said, cringing as I saw the first line of that email once again while deleting it.
I could only imagine Bucky’s reaction if he had seen it. That email was unfiltered madness and I wished I could do more than just delete it. I'd rather burn it from screen. If Bucky had even got a glimpse of it, I would have been ruined. His stupidly perfect eyes would glare at me in horror while I took one of the quinjets to an uncharted planet not in our solar system.
As we were leaving the lab, we froze when we heard Bucky shouting, and nearly tripped over each other when Sam came running past us in a panic.
“He’s gone mad!” He panted, glancing over his shoulder every few seconds as he paused to speak with us. “He says he’s sick of me taking his stuff. He flexed his metal arm at me! I don’t even know what he’s taking about!”
I went to comment, but he was gone before I could help him with his unfortunate situation. Becca stifled a giggle and Angie and I turned to her with a questioning gaze.
“I slipped Bucky’s phone into Sam’s back pocket,” she cackled. I grinned at her. She was a pain in my ass half the time, but Becca really did lighten up every shitty situation.
Bucky came thundering down the hall, a murderous look on his face. The three of us just pointed in Sam’s direction. He grunted in reply and we scurried down the opposite direction.
~~~~~
“Y/N, can we talk for a minute.”
I felt my blood run cold as I heard Bucky’s voice. Angie and Becca’s eyes grew wide from where they were sitting on the sofa.
“And, uh, what do you want to talk about,” I asked, facing his general direction but refusing to look him in the eyes.
“Um, I got a really weird email from you…” He trailed off, scratching the back of his neck awkwardly. “Something about my ‘intoxicating smell’?”
My two ‘friends’ bolted from the room before Bucky had even finished his sentence.
Movie Magic|| Taylor and Remmy
Mirror, mirror, taped to the wall-- who the least human of them all?
CW: mild ablest language mention
The real question of the week was, how did you clean an apartment that felt as if the grime was an inherent part of decor? As if it were just part of the apartment itself. Remmy stood in the middle of the studio, looking from the derelict living room, with only a TV stand and fold up table next to the window, to their bed pushed all the way to the other side of the room next to the closet. They’d asked the front desk to borrow the vacuum and when they were handed a little hand vacuum, had exasperatedly run back up to the apartment and spent the next two hours kneeling on carpet as they vacuumed up as much as they could. It gave up almost ¾ of the way through the job, so Remmy had pushed the mattress over what hadn’t been vacuumed. That still left the fact that Remmy didn’t have a couch. There were two fold up lawn chairs at what was supposed to pass as a dining table, but Remmy didn’t see those as being too comfortable for prolonged movie watching. Frowning, they decided to pile up the pillows and blankets against the wall and push the TV stand down so that it was at the foot of the bed. A good enough solution for now, but perhaps the idea of a couch should be added to their list of things to get. Remmy spent more time over at Blanche’s place than their own most days, but a couch was probably a good idea. But it would have to wait, because there was more cleaning to be done before Taylor got there.
When Remmy was satisfied enough with the cleanliness of the place, they glanced at the clock. Not too long now, but they reeked of the same must the apartment always seemed to have, so it was a quick shower and a quick change of clothes. They were just drying their hair, noticing how long it’d gotten-- perhaps they needed a haircut too, they couldn’t remember the last time they’d gotten one-- when there was a knock at the door. Moose, from his perch on the bed, looked up, and Remmy stumbled out of the bathroom.
Remmy lived completely across town from Taylor, and she was very concerned with being late. She’d done her best to look good for this little movie night of theirs. Remmy was cute, and Taylor would be lying to herself if she claimed she didn’t want to impress them. She vainly knew it wouldn’t take much, if their kiss was anything to go by, but still. She’d opted for a tight black tank top, black jeans, topped off with a flannel for a splash of color. She’d freshly shaved the sides of her head and put on some aftershave on her neck, her version of perfume. All that, blowdrying her hair, doing her makeup, it had taken longer than she anticipated, and she showed up at Gallows End Estates fifteen minutes after they’d agreed on. Hopefully Remmy was okay with fashionably late. She climbed the stairs to their apartment number, not particularly bothered by the less than stellar exterior of the building. With a quick knock, she signaled her arrival and waited patiently, a bit of a knot forming in her stomach suddenly.
“Coming! Sorry!” they said, hurrying over and unlocking the door, throwing it open. A smile seemed to automatically pull itself onto Remmy’s face when they opened the door and Taylor was there. “You made it!” they blurted, then pressed their lips together in a thin line. “I mean-- of course you made! You said you would. It’s not like you wouldn’t. I didn’t think you wouldn’t show up! I don’t think you’re that kind of person! It was just, um--” God, Rem, shut up. Even Moose seemed embarrassed by their rambling already, sighing as he turned his head away to lay back down on the bed. “Sorry. I’ll um--” stepped out of the way and ushered Taylor to come inside. “It’s uh...not much! But it’s home. For now.” A pause. “I hope.”
The moment she laid eyes on Remmy, Taylor smiled to match theirs. “I sure did,” she echoed, her smile spreading even wider as Remmy rambled. They hadn’t changed a bit since that night. It was easy to forget what they were like in person when it was easier to censor words on the internet. Taylor liked it. Listening to their subconcious pouring out felt so unfiltered and raw, something Taylor could appreciate since she used that same technique sometimes to write her music. “I’d never stand you up, you don’t gotta worry about that,” Taylor reassured, walking in as Remmy stepped out of the way. They were right, the apartment really wasn’t much, but they’d tried their best. She could tell they’d cleaned, and just that made Taylor smile. “So what’s on the docket for movies? Got anything picked out?”
Movies. That’s what Remmy had forgot! Idiot. “Oh, um--” they closed the door behind Taylor and redid the latch before scurrying over to the TV stand and throwing it open. “Let’s see uh...Blanche brought a bunch more over the other day. I know you said you like horror, I think there’s a few horror here….Or i’ve got this weird collection box that’s supposed to be all the hits from the past few years. Um...Date Movie?” Their breath caught immediately after saying the name. “Or uh-- something called Baby Driver? And um-- the newest Alien movie. I watched all the old ones when I was a kid, but I don’t really remember them much. Oh, she also brought me this collection of all five Final Destination movies. So really it’s um--” stopped, realized they’d talked almost without taking a breath or pause for two minutes. “S-sorry...I don’t um...have people over often.” Moose gave a huff, as if to further the point. Remmy looked over at Taylor from their spot crouched in front of the TV stand. “It’s uh...your pick.”
Taylor had forgotten to bring movies as well. She’d meant to, but she was already so late she’d left the stack she’d picked out on her kitchen counter. Luckily Remmy did have a bit of a selection. Nothing really stuck out to her until their final suggestion though. “I love the Final Destination movies! I hope you have snacks though. They weirdly always make me hungry. Marathon?” she suggested, still standing right inside the doorway. She was a bit nervous to approach Moose since last time. “I brought Moose a peace offering,” she said, reaching into her inside jacket pocket and pulling out the locally sourced bone she’d bought for him.
“Oh, um, yeah!” Remmy said, perking up as they pulled out the movie collection. “I’ve got plenty of snacks. Blanche stocked up my fridge last week and I haven’t even made a dent in most of the food yet.” They set the DVD down on the TV and padded over to the little minifridge in the wanna be kitchenette are and popped it open. They’re “pantry” was a metal shelf next to the window. “I’ve got like...chips. Popcorn! It’s microwave popcorn though, there’s no stove here. Um...soup? Some weird cheese crackers. Applesauce? Weird…” They glanced back over at Taylor, noticing her still standing in the doorway. “Oh, you can um-- come sit down or something? He’s fine. He’s just mad about the vacuum,” they said, coming over to her and holding out their hand for the bone. “You can give it to him! I-if you want.”
How much Remmy seemed to mention Blanche both warmed Taylor’s heart and, well, slightly worried her. They were a lot closer than Taylor thought. No wonder Remmy had freaked. But Blanche was taking care of Remmy too it seemed. Lending them movies, stocking their fridge. It was all very cute and domestic. “Can’t have a movie without popcorn, right?” Taylor commented, grinning over at them. They were so accommodating. So cute. Her nervous energy must have been written on her face though. “Are you sure? He didn’t like me much last time.” She tried to take Miles’ advice and not be so tense. Relax and try not to expect the worst. “Help me give it to him?” she suggested, holding the bone out for Remmy so they could both hand it to Moose.
“Oh, yeah!” Remmy said, their face lighting up. “Good idea! Maybe if he sees me helping you, he’ll be less worried.” They took the bone in one hand and motioned for Taylor to follow them over to Moose, who had been watching the whole scene from the bed, his head laying atop his big paws. He lifted his head when they got closer. “C’mere bud,” Remmy said, crouching, “want a treat?” He stayed on the bed for a moment, as if deciding whether or not to trust the new person in his house, before standing, too tempted by the smell of the fresh bone. Though his ears still pressed back, he tentatively took the bone from them, turned, and padded to a corner of the room, laying down to enjoy his new treat. “There! That went much better.”
Taylor smiled proudly as Moose took the bone and padded away. At least he hadn’t growled that time. “Still don’t think he likes me, but we’re getting there,” she said. “Right Moose?” But he was fat too busy picking at his bone to pay attention to her. So Taylor moved to climb on top of the bed, huddling herself in the little seating area made of pillows. “This is nice,” she said softly. Remmy had clearly made an effort, and Taylor appreciated it. “You’re a good host, Rem.” She bit her lip as she watched Remmy in the little kitchenette. “It okay if I call you that?”
“Oh, uh-- thanks! I um...tried. It’s hard to make this place um...look good,” Remmy said as they went back over to the kitchenette to gather snacks. Stuck a bag of popcorn in the microwave and hit cook. “Oh, yeah! That’s-- that’s totally fine! I don’t mind. The guys in bootcamp all called me different things, so really I’m used to being called by whatever. Uh-- I have lemonade, ginger ale, or sweet tea to drink. Or water?” They looked back over at Taylor on the bed and felt that flush of warmth in their cheeks again, hiding it behind the fridge door.
“Sweet tea please,” Taylor requested, catching Remmy’s blush no matter how much they tried to hide it. “If it makes you feel any better my houseboat doesn’t look too hot right now. Gotta replace some floorboards and shit. Flooding left a lot of water damage.” She looked around, realizing that sounded like a backhanded compliment. “I’m serious though, this place looks great. I’m honored by your effort. You really didn’t have to.”
“Oh, no,” Remmy said, reappearing from behind the fridge with two sweet teas and handing one over to Taylor. “I really did. I don’t think-- I don’t think I’ve cleaned since I moved in like two months ago. It needed it. Guess I just needed an excuse to make it look good.” A brief grin, before they cleared their throat and stumbled back to the TV. “So, uh...you really like these movies? I’ve never seen ‘em...what’re they about?” they asked, popping in the first disc and pushing play. Luckily, the TV they’d snagged had come with a built in DVD player. At least there was that.
Taylor graciously took the sweet tea and took a sip, watching Remmy closely. For being such an anxious open book, sometimes they were hard to read. She could feel the nervous energy wafting off of them. Or maybe that was just her own. “Yeah! It’s about someone having a vision of some horrible accident that kills them and a bunch of other people, and then they save some of the people when they freak out about the vision.” She grinned and lifted her finger, wagging it in front of her face. “But you can’t cheat death, and he comes to collect the lives he was robbed of.” She sat back again, patting the space on the bed beside her to urge them to join her. “It might sound like I just spoiled it, but they’ve all got the same formula. It’s the creative and gory kills we’re here for.”
Just be cool, Morgan had said, just be yourself! Remmy nodded, crawling over to the spot next to Taylor, settling next to her. Their face felt warmer again. “Oh that’s-- that’s a crazy concept for a movie! Sounds kinda scary.” They popped open the popcorn bag and held it over to Taylor. “It’s the super buttery kind, hope you like butter,” they chuckled, not noticing quite how hot the bag was. They didn’t really feel much anymore, physically. It left them craving to feel touch, of any kind. “Creative kills,” they said, “never thought I’d hear that as a sentence.” Another toothy grin, crooked on their face.
“It’s okay,” Taylor said, instinctively tucking her arm over Remmy’s shoulders. Not even trying to be smooth or anything. It just felt more comfortable. “I’ll protect you if it gets too scary,” she teased, plunging her hand into the popcorn bag. It was a bit too hot and she winced, but came out with a greasy handful anyway. “Oh I love butter. Best thing about the movies, really.” Taylor mirrored that cute little grin of Remmy’s, having to stop herself from kissing them. It was too much too early. She knew they were nervous, and the last thing she wanted was to make them feel used somehow. “I’ve been obsessed with gory movies ever since I was a kid. Always made me weirdly hungry too,” she admitted, shoveling her handful of popcorn in her mouth. “When I’d get too scared or weirded out by it though, I’d always just think about how the filmmakers pulled it off. Like what sort of effects and shit they had to use. When you imagine someone lying on the floor under a dude wearing a latex torso, pumping fake blood out of a tube, everything gets a lot less scary.”
Remmy felt their chest tighten again as Taylor hooked an arm around their shoulders. They’d craved human touch for so long, and now all they could do was sit stiffly. They remembered how nice it had felt to lay on Morgan’s shoulder, wrapped in her blanket burrito, why did this feel different? They eventually let themself lean into the touch, if only slightly. “I was never too bothered by gore, but I’m a sucker for jump scares. Don’t let me hold the popcorn, it’ll-it’ll go everywhere, probably,” they chuckled. Raised a brow, looking over at Taylor before back to the movie. A bunch of kids were crowding through an airport. “Really? Is that how they do it? I’ve never thought of things like that. Guess that’s why I’m a sucker at watching scary movies and stuff.”
Taylor could feel the stiffness in Remmy, and she rubbed her hand on their arm as she pulled them a bit closer to her. Even with all the anxious energy, they were a calming presence to Taylor. “Jump scares don’t bother me much. I like to be scared. Gives me a logical place to focus my anxiety. Like look, this thing on the screen, I’m supposed to be scared of it. Not of a conversation I had three years ago that suddenly popped into my head, you know?” She shrugged, turning her face slightly to get a better look at them. “Speaking or gore...which one was it?” She asked, looking down at Remmy’s body. She might as well rip the bandaid off. “Which arm?”
“I can get that,” Remmy said, choosing their words a little carefully. The doctor’s had said they would probably experience some form of anxiety once back at home, but they hadn’t told them what it would look or feel like. “I was taught mostly how to um-- focus my mind on small tasks, so that it didn’t start making anxious thoughts. So it’s kinda the same thing? They’d have us do like puzzles and word searches a lot at the halfway house.” Remmy froze when Taylor mentioned their arm. They stayed very still for a moment, before looking down at their hands in their lap. They didn’t wanna talk about it. They knew they probably needed to, but they really didn’t want to. Especially not with someone they might like. Like, like like. Remmy bit their lip. “Um...the-uh-- the right one.”
“That makes sense,” Taylor said. She was completely ignoring the movie now, focusing on Remmy. That was what putting on a cheesy movie was for though, right? So you could just talk over it and still have background noise. “I can see why jump scares would get to you though, with your PTSD.” She wanted to be sensitive about it, but she felt like tiptoeing around the right words would just sound condescending. “The biggest jump scares in these flicks are explosions, but we’ll keep it turned down.” She could feel Remmy stiffen under her grip, and she just gripped them tighter in return, holding them closer to her body. “What happened?” she asked gently. “I’m not gonna judge.”
“With the--” Remmy started, but stopped. All the doctor’s had said they would probably experience stress symptoms for a while after getting back, Remmy just figured that was what happened. And then it would get better. Like all wounds. That’s what Moose was for, right now. To help them heal. “Right. Yeah. It’s not so bad. It um-- should be fine. I think I’m just super gullible, is the main thing.” They somehow found talking about that easier than wrapping their head around telling Taylor about their missing arm. “Uh...we went down to the beach. To uh-- get pictures of the chest. But instead, a bunch of those um-- giant lobster things? Showed up and swarmed the beach and...we ran towards the shelter for safety, but they were getting close so I tried to like...hit one. And it--” they stopped suddenly, shaking their head. “It sounds insane. Even when i say it. Like, it happened to me, I was right there, and other people saw it but-- it’s just insane. Things like that don’t happen.”
Taylor hoped she hadn’t said something wrong, but the moment passed before she had a chance to clarify. Maybe being so blunt hadn’t been the right route to go. She was quiet as she listened to their story, nodding along, her mouth slowly dropping open as they went on. She’d heard of the giant lobster things, but she hadn’t actually seen one yet, surprisingly. “We? Who was you with?” she began, before shaking her head. That really wasn’t the most important question, but now she understood why they’d went back alone. As much as Taylor could chastise them for it, she probably would have done the same thing. “Well, things like that do happen, clearly.” Taylor picked up their right hand and brought the knuckles to her lips, giving them a soft kiss before lowering their hand and holding it in her own. “Like I said, I’ve seen some weird shit…” Her voice faded. Was she really ready to tell someone else?
“Oh, um...Blanche and Cece,” Remmy answered quietly. “Blanche said she was gonna go whether or not I was with her, so I kinda had to let her come...But I told her to stay by the car! And of course she didn’t! Cece was just happening by I guess. But they both jumped down to try and get me away from the lobsters, and we ran, and it--” they paused again, watching, entranced, as Taylor lifted their hand to brush her lips over their knuckles. Their head felt very light, suddenly. “I, um….before you….you should know I…” they looked at their hands interlocked. “I don’t think I’m human.”
She didn’t know who Cece was, but hearing that Blanche was with them at the time, it was all starting to make sense now. It sounded very Blanche to jump into action like that too. Taylor almost chuckled at the thought, but stifled herself. She noticed how Remmy’s voice completely cut off when she touched them, and it made her grin ever so slightly. But what they said next caused Taylor’s face to drop, and the gears in her mind to turn, slow and rusty feeling. “Can I be honest with you, Rem?” she whispered, nudging their chin to look her in the eye. “I don’t think I am either.”
Remmy felt like they were going to vibrate out of their skin with the silence hanging between them. Oh, god, they’d scared Taylor off, hadn’t they? She was going to get and leave and never talk to Remmy again. Because their arm had ripped off and regrown, and because they were too much to handle, and because they probably weren’t human, and-- “Wait,” they looked up when the words registered. I don’t think I am either. “You’re--” they didn’t really know what to say, so they said the first thing that came to mind. “Are you a bear?”
Taylor let out a huff of a laugh, brow furrowed at the question. “A bear? What? No!” Where had they even gotten that from? “This isn’t a joke,” Taylor snapped, but her voice softened just as quick as it had spiked. “Let me show you. Come here,” she said, climbing up out of the bed and tugging Remmy along with her toward the bathroom. Luckily, they had a mirror above the sink. Before Remmy entered, she held them at arms length in the doorway. “Promise you won’t be scared?” she asked, biting her lip. “Only one other person knows about this.”
“Oh, I--” Remmy started, “I wasn’t joking! I’m sorry if you thought-- I saw someone turn into a bear. They’re the only um-- non human I know.” They picked themself up after Taylor, following her towards the dinky little bathroom. Luckily they’d just recently taped a small vanity mirror up to the wall (poorly). “Oh, um, I-I promise. Why would I be scared? I mean-- I won’t be scared. I promise. Cross my heart and hope to die.”
Taylor decided to leave the bear questions for another time, nodding as Remmy promised not to be scared. “Okay...okay…” She took a deep breath. Then again. She could still back out of this if she wanted to. It wasn’t too late. But before she could make that decision, she tugged Remmy into the bathroom, letting them get a full view of her reflection. While a normal looking Taylor stood next to them, in the reflection stood a scary visage. Sharp, pointed teeth, feathered face, fleshy but scaley skin, and large wings folded close to her body where her arms should be. “I’ve seen this in the mirror for as long as I can remember. I don’t know what it means, but it’s not normal.” Her lips were synced perfectly with the feathered reflection. “I used to think she was someone else. Like I was being haunted by a demon. But as time’s went on I...I think that is me.” She looked over to Remmy, nervous to see their reaction.
Remmy stayed still as Taylor gathered herself. Admitting something like this must’ve been hard. Remmy still hadn't 100% accepted that they weren’t human, but that lady Lydia online seemed to think so, and so did Morgan, and even Cece. It wasn’t normal to regrow an arm. Taylor tugged them inside and Remmy’s eyes met the creature in the mirror. Were they seeing that right? Was it a trick of the eye? No...Taylor’s mouth moved in tandem with the bird in the mirror. Someone on the TV was screaming about something, but Remmy just stared for a while. “So you’re a bird?” they finally said, turning to look at the human looking Taylor standing next to them. “That’s cool! I think? Is it cool? Is it weird that I said that? Can you like...turn into that bid? The person I met that was a bear was able to just...turn into it. It was weird and kinda scary but they seemed nice enough. And like, you’re nice and you’re not like..hurting me or anyone! And like, if magic and vampires and bear people exist, why not bird people? So it’s cool. Right?”
Remmy’s reaction hadn’t been at all what Taylor had expected. They were freaking out about regrowing an arm (admittedly weird) but was totally fine with Taylor’s reflection being a fucking bird monster? The logic didn’t add up in Taylor’s head. “Well, I haven’t turned into one yet. Besides, I’m scared of heights, so no flying for me!” She attempted to joke off her nervous energy. “You really think this is cool? This is terrifying, Rem. What am I?” She was trying not to be too dramatic, but she was prone to it by nature. This conversation wasn’t really about her, in the long run. She moved to sit down on the toilet lid, holding her head in her hands, only looking up when Remmy spoke again. “Magic and vampires? You’re joking, right?”
“O-Okay,” Remmy said, scratching the back of their head, suddenly nervous they’d upset Taylor. “M-maybe ‘cool’ isn’t exactly the right word but I’m-- I’m really not good with words. As I’m sure you’ve figured out. I just! I don’t think it’s like-- it’s not bad! I’ve found out a lot of really strange things exist in like the past two weeks and it’s a little exhausting and maybe it’s easier for me to just believe these things at face value? Like I just found out I can see ghosts now, and it’s like-- have I always been able to see them and not known? Or is this a new thing? Is it like...just here? Pretty sure I didn’t see any ghosts in Afghanistan. O-or Pakistan. Or at boot camp. Pretty sure I didn’t eat raw meat before, yet here we are! So, like-- if all that is possible, of course magic is. Plus I literally saw it happen right before my eyes, and yeah, maybe I was a little out of it at the time cause my arm was regrowing right before my eyes, but-- it happened! And I saw it! And, yes! Vampires! I’m being serious! They attacked Blanche! How else do you explain that chest on the beach making people cold without like...giving them hypothermia? I guess maybe it just makes sense to me. A-and maybe I don’t know what you are or what I am, but it’s not-- it’s not a bad thing, I don’t think! It’s confusing, don’t get me wrong, but it’s--” Remmy suddenly stopped. They realized they hadn’t taken a breath in that entire ramble. “S-sorry…” they said quietly, sinking to the floor in the doorway. “I ramble when I’m...nervous...I guess it’s a little more shocking than I thought, you being...your reflection….” they paused again, wordlessly reaching out and grabbing the razorblade sitting on the sink. They held out their hand. “Watch.” was all they said, before running the blade smoothly along their skin, cutting it wide open. But no blood spewed, no wincing, no pain. The skin fell back in place, seamlessly growing itself back together in just a few moments. “So...I’m kinda freak out about me, too.”
For a moment Taylor thought they were legitimately making fun of her. That the arm thing was all fake and she’d fallen for it and maybe they didn’t even see anything in the reflection. Maybe they were playing her for a goddamn fool. But she should have known better. Remmy probably didn’t even know how to intentionally hurt someone’s feelings. She let her face soften as they spoke, trying to take in the rambling they put forth. It was...a hell of a lot of information all at once. She felt her eyes going wide, almost feeling out of breath herself as they just kept going, and going, and going. “It’s okay,” she said softly as they sank to the ground. Before she could say anything else, they were cutting their skin and it...didn’t bleed? “What the fuck…?” she whispered as she watched it heal back up almost instantly. “That’s some Wolverine shit. Fuck.” So they hadn’t been lying about the arm, that was for sure. “Okay, yeah, I believe you that some weird shit is going on in this town. Weird people. And we’re just a couple of freaks.” She lifted her shirt and showed Remmy her belly button. Or lack thereof. Just a realistic looking tattoo. “I never had a belly button. My Dad said it was just a birth defect for whatever but…” she let her shirt drop again. “Goddamn, my head feels like it’s spinning, Rem. Can I have some water?”
“Freaks?” Remmy said, their face contorting. They didn’t like that word. They’d heard it a lot as a kid. Freak, couldn’t look people in the eyes. Freak, counting their steps, starting over if they got out of order. Freak, had to open and close their locker three times before taking anything out. Remmy shook their head vigorously. “We-we’re not freaks. Just different. Just...different.” Remmy’s eyes fell to the emptiness of Taylor’s stomach, save the tattoo. They’d never heard of people being born without belly buttons, but with everything else that they were finding out, it was the least weird. “Water. Right! I can...I can do that!” They scrambled up, feeling suddenly cramped in the small bathroom, that shaky feeling in their hands that they got when they heard a loud noise. Grabbed the water filter jug from the fridge and poured out two glasses, bringing one back to Taylor, staying a little outside the doorway this time, hands clutched around the glass. “So, um....some dude just got his head cut off on the TV. Should I pause it?”
Taylor thought she might have offended Remmy with her words, but she stayed silent. Different. That didn’t sound much better in her mind. But then again, the age old emo kid question, what was normal anyway? Definitely not all this. As Remmy scrambled to get water Taylor stayed put and just tried to gather herself. Process everything she’d just heard and seen into something coherent and digestible. It was a hard ask, for sure. When they returned, Taylor graciously took the glass and chugged it all down, not realizing how thirsty she’d been. She let out a small chuckle at their words and got up, setting her glass on the sink as she approached them, reaching up to brush some hair out of their eyes. “Whatever is up with us, whatever we are, we’re gonna figure it out, okay? Together.” She caressed their cheek as she smiled the smallest of smiles at them, unintentionally ignoring their question.
Remmy stayed still as Taylor stood up, fingers brushing their cheek again, kinda like that first night they’d met. They swallowed, a lump in their throat. “O-oh, you...you don’t have to um, worry about me. I’ll be fine! I’m more interested in um-- helping other people out, you know? Whatever is up with me, I-I’m sure it’ll work itself out,” they said quickly, not quite moving from their spot, but not quite responding to the touch yet. They gripped the water glass tightly, not even noticing the little crack their pressure was putting on the plastic. “Um-- I-I know I gave you a lot of stuff to um, process, so if you wanna like...just sit that’s cool. I’m cool with that. Or we can like, go for a walk. It’s not very um-- scenic around here. But there’s a hiking trail! Or i-if you just wanna go home, th-that’s okay, too! I don’t mind. I’d understand.”
Taylor was such a hypocrite sometimes. The same things that came from Remmy’s mouth she could hear herself saying. ‘Don’t worry about me I’ll be fine’. But hearing Remmy say it, touching their skin, she could practically feel how they thought of themself. It almost hurt. She’d always been able to relate to people in a deeper level than was probably normal, but she’d never felt such strong empathy for someone before. It was almost a little too intense. “Let’s uh, lets go for a walk,” she said, nodding and taking a step past them and out of the cramped bathroom. “I think I need some fresh air.
Had they said something wrong? Remmy watched Taylor step by them, noticing their eyes pool from a cool green to deep brown. That was weird. They were a familiar color, though, distracting Remmy a moment. Something about them felt...sad. “O-Okay…” they said, following after her. “Hold on.” They made their way over to the dresser next to the bed and grabbed Moose’s lead, bending down to put it on him. Their hands were almost shaking and they weren’t sure why. Stood back up, looking over at Taylor. “I….” they weren’t sure what they wanted to say, but they wanted to say something, “Sorry. Today was supposed to be...nice. Not...this…”
Taylor waited as Remmy got Moose ready to go, and once they were she pulled open the door and held it for them and Moose to pass. “It’s fine, Rem,” she said, her voice holding an edge of exasperation, but she quickly stifled it, swallowing it down before she spoke again. “It was nice, in its own weird way.” She watched as Remmy and Moose passed and shut the door behind them, following them outside. She caught up and laced her hand with Remmy’s free one that wasn’t holding Moose’s lead. “Thanks for trusting me.”
“Oh, yeah, of course,” Remmy said, “No problem. I-I mean, why wouldn’t I? You haven’t done anything to make me not trust or believe you.” Maybe that was a naive way of looking at things, but Remmy wasn’t a skeptic. They trusted people at face value, they believed them because, to them, no one had a reason to lie. It had backfired on them quite a few times, but it wasn’t in them to not trust other people because of someone else’s faults. They squeezed Taylor’s hand. Moose was being awful good, not even a growl. “Hey, um-- have your eyes always done that? The uh, color changing thing?”
Taylor just grinned at their response. Of course. God, they were far too kind for their own good. It honestly worried Taylor a bit. One day someone would take advantage of them and their kindness if they weren’t careful. “What?” she asked, brows furrowed. “My eyes changed color?” She dug her phone out of her pocket with her free hand and looked at herself in it. The only way she could see her normal reflection. “What the fuck…?” she breathed. “My eyes are brown now? What the fuck?” She stopped in her tracks, just staring into her own eyes. They still looked like her own, but darker. Heavier. Full of something that didn’t belong to her. She looked over to Remmy. “You think this has something to do with...you know?”
They’d only just made it down the stairs and into the courtyard when Taylor slowed to a stop, pulling out her phone. Okay, so not normal. That was...kinda good to know. Remmy blinked, letting her parse it out herself, biting their bottom lip. “I mean, could be?” they said, “Here, lemme see,” they motioned for Taylor to turn towards them. “Maybe it’s just the lighting out here? O-or inside?” Or magic. Or whatever it was Taylor was. Remmy’s head was beginning to swim a little, too, as if something at the back of their mind was pushing to be free, to be remembered.
“No, they definitely changed color. Maybe they’re brown now because I’m full of shit,” Taylor attempted to joke, but a smile didn’t accompany her laugh, so it just sounded harsh and dry. “This is insane.” She was freaking out more about this than hearing about Remmy’s arm. She was honestly surprised by how calm she’d been about that. What did that say about her? “I think I...need to go home.” She reaches out and put a hand on Remmy’s shoulder. “It’s not you. I love spending time with you. We’ll watch those stupid movies properly someday. I think I’m just too spooked right now. I’m sorry.”
“Oh, yeah, no-- i’ts--” Remmy started, stuttered, stopped. “Yeah, that’s-- I get it.” Of course Taylor wanted to deal with this alone. She didn’t need Remmy sticking their nose in and trying to help. “You, um-- me, too. I mean, spending time with you. I like...doing that. Like that, too.” Their eyes flitted up to Taylor’s, but that palpitation that rumbled in their chest whenever they made eye contact started up and they had to look down. They were so familiar, so warm, so...Moose’s cold nose pressed against their palm. “Right, yeah. Rain check! I’ll take a rain check on the movie night. I-I-I promise I won’t um-- watch them without you. See?” Lifted their hand, fingers crossed. “Promise.” They remembered, now, whose eyes were that color. That soft, creamy chocolate color. “I um-- I hope you-- feel better.” Moose whined.
Taylor could slightly feel Remmy’s sudden distress and she did her best to calm them, leaning forward and giving them a peck on the cheek. “You too, babe. Like I said, we’ll figure this out.” She leaned down to Moose, hesitant around first but trying to stay confident, giving him a quick pat on the head. His ears were back like always, but he didn’t growl. Progress. “Until next time,” she said, before making her way back to her truck. Once she climbed in, she leaned her head on the steering wheel, taking a few steadying breaths before pulling her phone back out again. She had to get a proper picture of this. But when she looked this time, her eyes were green again. “What the fuck….?”
“Until next time,” they repeated. Remmy stayed put for a long time after Taylor walked off. Moose stayed with them, whining quietly, pressing his nose against their hand, but they didn’t feel it anymore. Why had Taylor’s eyes done that? Was it because of Remmy? Or something else? Why had they turned that color? Remmy didn’t want more questions. They already had so much on their mind. But they liked Taylor. Maybe more than they’d even initially thought. Would her eyes always be that color with Remmy? They didn’t wanna be reminded of him every time they looked at her. Of Dario. Remmy blinked, eyes suddenly cloudy. Moose tugged on his lead, pulling them back towards the apartment. They followed, mindlessly. Stepped inside. Someone on the TV got hit by a falling building sign. Remmy slid to the floor and put their head in their hands, unmoving. The credits rolled.
