Prohibition AU | Character Profile: Giovanni

The Roaring Twenties is a time of conflict, crime, and chaos—but chaos is opportunity, and the inexplicably salmon-haired Giovanni Potage is a professional agent of it. Currently under Naven’s employ after falling out with a much larger gang, he leads the majority of Bliss Ocean’s soldiers with little other than a vandalised baseball bat, a cooking pot of tricks, and a reckless confidence only matched by his sheer dumb luck and unconventional faculties.

Background.

Giovanni Potage was born to a small immediate family of two mothers in the Chinese diaspora of the US, and close relatives to the legendary crime family known as the Roughhouses. His upbringing was largely informed by honoured family traditions and festive gatherings, the ripples of the Great War overseas, and the growing cultural obsessions of baseball and motorsports in the States. The values of respect, diligence, and unity were deeply instilled in him since childhood, just as much as his taste for brazen rebellion and troublesome aptitude for making a weapon out of anything he could pick up.

Hungry for excitement, surrounded by an extended family versed in crime, and perpetually cruising for a bruising, Giovanni was soon enveloped by a strange aspiration: To become the greatest criminal name in the United States of America. He quickly found himself in a notorious, nationwide criminal group known as the Banzai Blasters, where his natural charisma and unusual, uncanny instincts would soon earn him a small company of deathly-loyal soldiers and an early promotion to captain (and help him to survive the job, at that!)

Giovanni first met Naven by proxy of Molly, who he had befriended early into the Prohibition during an operation gone-awry, and who he proceeded to protect from the chaos of said operation. When the organisational fallout of that night’s events revealed to him the true penny-pinching, dog-eat-dog mentality that suffused the Banzai Blasters’ ranks, Giovanni swiftly left the gang, bringing along his loyal crew of “boys” and a gang-spanning grudge with him. Naven quickly saw the unique assets and potential of the young rogue, and would soon approach him with a new, once-in-a-lifetime job offer. And what kind of aspiring criminal legend could refuse?

Relations.

Though he serves Naven and Bliss Ocean with diligence, Giovanni’s loyalties lie ultimately with his own “boys”. Notable among them is his younger cousin Trixie, of the Roughhouse crime family; as well as the resident foundling, Molly Blyndeff, who he has developed a remarkable compassion for, even serving as a sort of surrogate guardian towards her in her family’s absence. By proxy of the two, he also maintains a somewhat rivalrous acquaintance with Phoenica Fleecity and Dr. Sylvester Ashling.

Within the family’s inner rankings, Giovanni’s almost aggressive amiability—and frankly, his utter lack of social awareness—have also earned him the friendship of the equally-eccentric Rick Shades, the ever-friendly Indus Tarbella, and even a somewhat-amused Zora Salazar. As a largely-amateur criminal, he also admires and is close acquaintances with one Ramsey Murdoch, who has (resignedly) taken to mentoring Giovanni and “making sure the kid doesn’t get himself killed”.

Bliss Ocean Report.

In a business where saying or doing the wrong thing can cost you immeasurably, secrecy and anonymity tend to be valued luxuries; which I suppose is why my colleagues in the underworld find so perplexing my decision to place the notoriously loud, painfully unsubtle Giovanni Potage under my employ. But I do have my reasons, and he does have his traits that set him apart from the common gangster.

Given the young villain’s penchant for making general mayhem, it’s easy to miss just how excellent Giovanni is at making targeted mayhem when he wants to, especially when working in tandem with a team (or a teammate, failing that). Though not necessarily a gifted strategist, Giovanni is a remarkable improviser with seemingly no bounds to his creativity in combat, capable of fashioning life-saving plans out of the most ridiculous of circumstances. His talent with his favourite baseball bat especially is not to be underestimated…although his choice of embellishments for the signature weapon (knives??) can certainly be questionable.

Giovanni also appears to possess some stranger attributes which admittedly interest me somewhat, on top of simply being quite useful. Catastrophe seems to tail the teen wherever he’s directed to create chaos, but no matter the destruction that inevitably befalls the crime scene, he’s never been dragged away with more than a dozen or so scrapes and bruises (and the occasional concussion or dislocated shoulder). Ramsey pins the blame for the damage done on his “lucky” number, 13, which the otherwise-chronically dyscalculic Giovanni keeps count of with a strange obsession. Given his uncanny survivability and tendency to inflict the most devastating attacks at nigh-miraculous moments, I’d argue the accursed number is what’s keeping him alive.

Then there is the matter of…Giovanni’s soup. His soup, which is not only the strongest and spiciest I have ever smelled and tasted of a meal (and seasoned to perfection as far as anyone can attest), but also capable of spontaneous resuscitation, temporary adrenaline production, and sometimes even a minor increase to natural healing. Giovanni has attempted to explain this away as the work of a ‘family recipe’, which explains…well, nothing, and the effects aren’t even always consistent or guaranteed. Nonetheless, he’s never seen without a cooking pot full of it on hand, and he swears it has been a major boon in those missions that come to bullets and blows. I still dare not challenge this claim.

But Giovanni’s greatest asset to us, by far, is his charisma and his compassion. Just during his time working for the Banzai Blasters alone, he’s managed to earn the veritably undying loyalty of six of his peers, largely simply by being true to himself and kind to those around him. He has also taken it upon himself to care for our goddaughter Molly, who I think could benefit from his guidance and infectious confidence more than anyone…despite his criminal aspirations. Giovanni Potage is a chaotic, contradictory character indeed, a wild card to be sure; and personally, I’m almost as eager as I am nervous to see what becomes of his career in Bliss Ocean.

Trying to clean up my files and decided to finish up this one first. While looking at old travel posters I found a really good one that fit Sylvester perfectly, and the other one was an old Vogue cover that was originally going to be Penny, but I accidentally made her look older, so… guess that’s Sylvester’s sister, Penny’s mom, aka Petunia Pitstop. (Name courtesy of the Wacky Races reboot, because to me that’s all it’s good for.)

Some vague ideas so far related to the AU: She’s already dead by the time the story takes place and Penelope’s dad probably had a hand in it, or so Sylvester suspects, but has no evidence to support it. The two siblings were rather close, so her death hit him pretty hard. I want to play around with the family dynamic of Sylvester and Penny, and don’t want to jump straight to the cartoon shenanigans of her uncle trying to off her, but him having a rather hard time even bringing himself to harm her, as she looks just like Petunia. Because the late great Paul Lynde voiced Sylvester I took some inspiration from his voice actor’s life, so Sylvester is a closeted gay man in the AU, and one of the few people who he was open about it was Petunia. One of the reasons why he’s gonna be so harsh to the two German pilots in the Prohibition AU is that they could live a somewhat normal life in the depraved Berlin, something he obviously wishes for, but cannot have. He also has a fucked up ex tho, but for now let it be a secret who that is~

11. How many characters do you have?

Errrrrrrrrr...

Not counting pure SPCs for chronicles I've run, just "OCs" in the general sense... about fifteen? Riccardo, Luciana, Santino, Alistair, Sorcha (Hecata squad); Lamorne (forbidden blorbo); Penny, Riley (PCs in other people's chronicles); Yaritsa and Myriam (Tzimisce PC and her sire whomst I have queued up); Zhao Wen-Jun and all her associated names (VTMB); and Laetitia, Dorian, Sylvester and Dominique, the core cast of Bloodspell, a game I made and a novella I have as of yet no idea how to plot.

19. Which character is least spoken about? Speak about them now!

I want to talk about my Tzimisce! I've not really had an angle on playing one before, but Blood Sigils dropped and gave me the Koldunic Sorcery angle around the time I actually started paying attention to Animalism and watched The Suicide Squad, wanting to adopt Ratcatcher II.

Put all that together and Yaritsa fell out of the air, fully formed; horrid, sassy little street witch who's bonded with the water and knows exactly what's going on thanks to her army of rats. She doesn't like shoes and she comes with an entourage (armed ghoul squad and her ailing, befuddled mortal dad).

Her sire, Myriam, is a concept I've had kicking around for ages but not found the oomph to use, probably because I was being smooth brained and thinking she had to be a Harbinger. The concept, in two words: Saint Death. Ancilla koldun occupies local Santa Muerte cult: they're her Herd, but they're her Herd and she looks out for them, and she's functionally adopted Yaritsa along with Embracing her. Sometimes a character isn't complete by themselves; they need to be part of someone else's deal.

21. Tremere or Salubri?

God, what a choice. I can only hope this question explodes and kills me.

This is tricky because I don't like either of them strictly according to their presentation. I've used both as SPCs and they've been fairly impactful, but... eh.

I've discoursed at great length about the Tremere thing in the past, bottom line is I like them as medieval alchemists who backdoored their way into vampirism and decided to take over, but I can take or leave their Ars Magicka baggage and Thaumaturgy and all the high level "lore" cruft.

Salubri are similarly eaten by their role in the metaplot and so overdesigned that I have trouble with them existing in any other capacity for several thousand years before the Tremere came along. The original "there are only seven and they all diablerise their sire on Embrace and they're all eighth generation" was the start of all that "vampions" bullshit that I don't really vibe with. The super sekrit Sabbat Salubri popping up in Hong Kong all way of the warrior stylee is more of that Nineties wuxiaboo crap that brought us Kindred of the East. I also don't give a fuck about the Baali and the "revelation" that those are Saulot's fault has no impact for me - OK, whatever, I didn't buy the idea of the vampire messiah anyway, who cares about Antediluvians, we have real problems!

You know what, I've decided. It's Tremere. They're on thin ice - every time a Tremere player whines about losing Thaumaturgy in V5 I reach for my revolver, you still have Rituals, you have to play by the same Discipline rules as everyone else, die mad about it - but I can make them into something I vibe with a lot easier than I can the snowflake sparkledog special clan.

No contest. The recurring subtext of all my games since 2005 has been "the Bahari are right about everything, and they 'won' Gehenna while the rest of you weren't even sure what's going on." The Mother of Monsters is absolutely the most important figure in the World of Darkness (if she literally exists) and she has the coolest cult by a country mile (even if she doesn't). Lilith, and the Bahari, fuck, and they fuck nasty, up against a tree, rubbed red and raw and bleeding. Don't you wish your spiritual icon was hot like mine?

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude. It's just... I've had very bad experiences with both of these "gentlemen". They are some of the slimiest most rotten villains that you would ever hate to meet. I guess it would be good to answer your question, so you know why you should avoid them at all costs...

First up the "Green Lawyer" which I am sure you are referrin' to the deplorable Sylvester Shyster. What do I even say? He's a corrupt lawyer who abuses the law to swindle innocent people and try to evade consequences for his criminal activities. Did you know that he tried to steal Minnie's inheritance? And after she trusted him as a friend too. Yeah, I know. And that's barely the tip of the iceberg. There's almost no end to his depravity. He'll do anythin' to get a quick buck, even put multiple people's lives at risk.

If he ever offers you any legal services, SAY NO!!! I'm not jokin'. He'll try to come across as someone trustworthy, but he's not. He'll somehow find a way to screw you over and take all your money. It's best to ignore him, or even better yet report him. I honestly can't stand people like him. People who just see others as potential targets to squeeze every penny from. I can't even imagine how he sleeps at night.

And now for the "Inky Dog", I know exactly who you're talkin' about. The wretched evil that is The Phantom Blot. Him. Well the most important thing you need to know about him is ...

Sorry. It can be hard to talk about him sometimes. I have had some... intense... experiences with him and while he's not the only one who I struggled with... With him, it just feels different. I don't know how to explain it. He just feels so... off. He's unsettling in a way that is hard to describe. He masks it pretty well with his "charisma", but once that mask starts to slip... Well...

... He kinda scares me.

It doesn't help that he is extremely conniving and can make devices and schemes unlike the world has ever seen. Every time I know he is involved in something, I just feel like I have to be on high alert. He always manages to surprise me. And not in a good way.

I guess what is most important for you to know is that he's extremely cruel and manipulative, and will do anything, anything, to get more power and control. I wouldn't recommend tryin' to deal with him. It's not worth getting entangled in his traps, both physical and mental. He's a wicked monster with a stone-cold black heart made of coal... Then again, I wonder if even that's true. Sometimes I feel like there's still some humanity in him. A part of him that does know better... I kinda feel like that makes him worse.

Regardless, I think it's important not to be afraid of him. That's exactly what he wants. He's not as invincible as he tries to appear. He's not unbeatable. In the end, he's just a guy. Just a guy in a cloak. And just like any guy, he has, can, and will be defeated.

But seriously if you happen to catch either of these two in suspicious activity please alert me or the Mouseton police. We'll do our best to try and take care of these scoundrels.

Perhaps this is a blessin' in disguise. I could use this as an opportunity to keep an eye on these two and keep them out of trouble.

"Mm?" Sylvester hums, looking up at the man, eyes tired and hair unkempt. The clock reads close to 4 in the morning.

"You heard me. What are you doing up?" Butcher asks again, sitting down next to Sylvester on the couch.

"Pre-flight jitters?" He asks, pulling the man into his lap, who slowly relaxes, as Butcher's scarred hands knead at Sylvester's shoulders ever-so gently, wanting him to relax.

"I.. think so."

"Penny for your thoughts?"

"What if I'm making a mistake?"

"Elaborate." Butcher pries, hands still on the older man's body.

"What if.. I ruin their lives? They'll be alone. Absolutely alone."

"Oh c'mon, give Mary and Sam a little more credit. She's tough as nails and the boy trusts you like a dog. Besides, you three will be alone together. The kids trust and adore you, dollface. They'll be fine. "

"...And if they're not...?" He asks after a brief silence, before expanding "what if.. What if none of us are alright?"

"Then you remember my damn number and call me. I'll get your sorry asses back in my arms the moment shit goes south, y'hear?"

"Yeah... I hear."

"Good kitty. C'mon, back to sleep with you now. You gotta get some sleep. Eye bags ain't cute on that muzzle of yours." Butcher states simply, pulling a blanket over the both of them, still on the couch.

"I'll be right here, kit. Just get some rest." He coos, pressing a soft kiss into the other's hair, still holding him. He savors the feeling of Sylvester's face nestling in the crook of his neck. He stops his impromptu massage when the short man's breathing evens out, smiling sadly at the thought that he leaves tomorrow, but pushes the thought away.

"Dream of me, dollface." He murmurs, staring up at the ceiling, avoiding looking at the packed suitcases.

"... Please."

I think a lot of us just say fuck it and scream, but I've started endorsing belting boxes to help my patients feel okay with letting their pain out as loudly as they could possibly want to while their laboring baby is tearing them apart down there, and they seem to be a pretty big hit. All of that TMI to say: try a belting box, I think you'll really benefit.

PENNY SYLVESTER

This past week had probably been the most confusing week of Penny's life—and, considering she'd recently found out her "adopted" brother was actually her kidnapped brother, that was saying something. She'd been thinking a lot about her situation lately, about her and Logan, and how she was sure this just wasn't working. She'd almost texted his sister before everything had gone down, asking if she'd hate her if she ended things with Logan. However, spending a week away from him, parts of it not even knowing if he was safe or not, had caused her to do plenty of rethinking, and she realized she was glad she'd never sent the text, and even more glad she hadn't told Logan exactly what she'd wanted to talk to him about. Penny didn't care about their house; she was glad it seemed to have suffered minimal damage, and that a smashed vase and toppled over items here and there were the worst of it. She didn't even care to pick them up, and simply found herself pacing back and forth by the door, waiting for Logan to walk in. It wasn't long before he did, but somehow it felt like she'd been waiting hours. He'd barely made it through the door before she reached up to catch his cheeks in the palms of her hands, stretching upward to press a needy kiss to his lips. "You're here. You're okay," she said as she pulled back only far enough to study his face, her hands finding their way to the back of his neck. The statement was a reassurance for herself more than for him. It was no secret she'd never particularly been Zoe's biggest fan, but ignoring her as she jumped up at her legs wasn't intentional, she was just too focused on Logan. Her eyes, which grew slightly watery, continued to stare into his, taking all of him in. She hadn't done this in so long, and she didn't realize until now just how much she'd missed him—long before the past week. "I hated not knowing if you were okay," she whispered, her fingertips brushing gently against the back of his neck. "I hated not being with you."

LOGAN CLARINGTON

Logan had known even before going into this crisis that there was something wrong in his marriage, whether he'd been willing to admit it or not, the fact that he was spending more and more time out of the house was not doing either him or Penny any favours. So when he'd gotten Penny's text about wanting to talk, his heart had sunk. She was feeling it too, and here he was proving his father right- he was unworthy of being called a man, undeserving of the woman in his life that had loved him through so much turmoil. In truth, at first Logan had thought of the lockdown as something of a lucky break, a stay of execution, but the longer that he had sat there, the more hours and days that had ticked past, the more he realised that this wasn't what he wanted, he didn't want to lose Penny, he had to fight for his marriage, and he had sworn that if they both came out of this okay, he would spend every day doing just that. The second he was given the all clear, Logan had practically sprinted home, Zoe running happily behind him. He loved her dearly, but the second she seemed to be slowing him down, he had picked her up rather than slowed down, not caring if he looked insane right now. Penny was waiting at home for him, and that was the only important thing. He set Zoe down as he fumbled with his keys before realising that with Penny already home, he didn't even need them. "Pen?! " He called the second he opened the door, heart pounding in his chest, "Pen are you-" The minute he heard her, Logan felt like his heart was going to explode and he ran forward to meet her, his arms wrapping around her waist as he pressed his face into her hands, returning the kiss with as much urgency as he could muster, "I am, I'm okay, I'm right here, like always. Are you okay, are you hurt, are you...?" He studied her back as he trailed off, leaning down to rest his forehead against hers, eyes full of tears as Zoe went ignored for a moment. She could be fussed over again later, right now he just wanted to look at his wife. He let out a shaky breath as her fingers traced the back of his neck, tightening his grip on her waist, ensuring there was no space between them as he held her closer than he had done in far too long. "This was the worst week of my life." Logan mumbled, "And I've had some pretty crappy ones Pen, but this? Not knowing if you were okay, not being able to see you and talk to you properly? I never ever want to do that again."

PENNY SYLVESTER

"I'm fine," Penny promised, pressing a series of short, quick kisses to his lips as the moisture in her eyes began to spill over her lids. She couldn't remember the last time she'd wanted to kiss Logan as anything more than just obligatory greeting and goodbye kisses, but now she didn't want to stop, or she at least didn't want to stop being close to him. Her shoulders relaxed as his forehead pressed to hers. "I know," she whispered, gently nodding as her forehead remained resting softly against his. "But we're both here now, we're fine. Our house is fine. That crazy little nut is fine." She chuckled softly, motioning down to Zoe. Their families were fine; everybody and everything really was fine, and Penny was going to make sure things between them were more than just fine, too. Her arms wrapped around his neck, tightening to pull them impossibly closer. "I missed you," she murmured, tilting her face to press another, longer kiss to his lips this time. She'd missed him this past week, but she'd missed him much longer than that, too.

LOGAN CLARINGTON

Words couldn't express how relieved Logan was that Penny was okay, that he was looking at her, holding her for himself and had indisputable proof that she was just fine. In that moment, he didn't ever want to stop touching her, to stop having her lips on his. They had a lot to work on, that much was true, but right now that didn't matter, the only thing that mattered was that they were both here and they were both safe. "The house could have been a pile of rubble and I wouldn't care, as long as it meant that you were okay. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy we still have a house, but... me, you and Zoe? That's all I need Pen." He hated seeing her cry, and raised a hand from her waist to gently brush them from his cheeks, laughing warmly as Zoe tried and failed to push between them, "Oh she's been making friends everywhere, don't worry about her." He took a long, deep breath and closed his eyes for a few moments, soaking in the feeling of Penny in his arms. They hadn't held each other like this in... god he didn't even know how long. Too long. "I missed you too." He mumbled as he leant into the kiss. Logan hadn't wanted to do this in a long time, not beyond the kisses that he felt like he had to give her, but now? He couldn't think of anything he wanted to do more.

PENNY SYLVESTER

With Logan standing right there in front of her, their bodies pressed so closely, so safely together, it was suddenly so easy to believe him, to believe that the three of them were all each other needed. It was a stark contrast to the way she'd felt for a long time now, but it was welcome, and she allowed herself a soft, sincere smile as she tilted her face into his touch. "I don't doubt it." She chuckled quietly as she glanced down towards their crazy dog, though her focus was soon on Logan again, on the way their lips seemed to fit together as perfectly as they always used to. It was easy for Penny to deepen the kiss, before she eventually pulled back just far enough to scan his face. "Can we go upstairs?" She asked in not much more than a whisper. Like kissing, she couldn't remember the last time either of them had initiated sex when it wasn't just obligatory 'we're in bed and we're married so we probably should' sex, but as she took all of him in, she knew she wanted even more. Without losing eye contact, she tightened her arms around him, then rephrased her question to more of a sure, strong statement. "Take me upstairs."

LOGAN CLARINGTON

He didn't know why he'd ever thought that there were problems in his marriage at that moment, with Penny nestled in his arms in that perfect way that she always had ever since they'd met. This was woman who had loved him through thick and thin, had cradled him during night terrors, talked him through his worst shifts, knew exactly how he felt about his parents and never judged him for it. And here she was, looking at him in that way that made him feel invincible, pressed into his touch, and suddenly it felt like they were going to be okay. That feeling only intensified as she kissed him, it felt like the first kiss in months... years even that felt like a true kiss, not simply a passing obligation but a complete and pure expression of love, the love that he had felt for her ever since the day he walked into her apartment to find her swatting at a smoke detector with a tea towel. He echoed, swallowing the lump in his throat. A smile tugged at his lips as the question turned into a statement, arms sweeping down her back and her legs until he was lifting her thighs in his hands and encouraging her legs to wrap around his waist. Logan's evident surprise at Penny's request-turned-instruction was warranted, all things considered. She'd surprised herself, in fact, but Logan didn't seem to be complaining, so Penny didn't regret it. If anything, his willingness only served to aid in turning her on—she hadn't felt this wanted in a long time, and she wasn't going to take the moment lightly. Wrapping her legs around him as he picked her up, Penny leaned in to press her lips to his momentarily, before beginning to trail kisses across his defined jaw and down to the warm skin of his neck. "You're gonna see just how much I missed you," she murmured between kisses. Penny didn't know how long this was going to last, but she was going to ride the wave for as long as possible. She only hoped Logan would allow himself to fully give in to her, too.
