the locked tomb series as a whole feels like something the mechanisms would come across and be interested enough to write an album about

like you KNOW one of them would somehow accidentally be ordained as a lyctor or some shit. not because they go through the process but because they’re immortal and have the same healing powers as one. one of them would find a way to meet jod and probably conspire with him (and we know it would probably be ashes). pyrrha would meet one of them on the street and either get into a fistfight or take them out drinking. probably both. poor brian would probably crash land on one of the houses and become some sort of prophet/oracle again. they would encourage so much awful shit and it would be great

i'm c.o. lopez, a queer disabled ND white/filipino writer working on a queer retelling of the devil’s tragedy called Sons of God.

lucifer is the oldest angel, tasked by a distant god with rearing all angels born after him, including the second-born michael.

as heaven develops at their feet and more angels are born, the pair grow closer, but the growing roles given to lucifer by the absent father and michael’s search for his identity, along with lucifer’s questioning of the lord and michael’s devotion, begin to drive them apart.

above it all, the lord sits on his lotus throne, watching and waiting in silence.

content warnings: along with graphic violence and sexual content, this book contains depictions of blasphemy, mental instability, psychosis, self-harm, and emotional neglect. all of the angels also refer to each other as ‘brother’, including those in relationships. these warnings are currently subject to change, so make sure to check them every so often! and please if you're a minor, don't interact; you will be blocked. this blog isn't a space for you.

The Dark Queen of Mortholme by Mosu

This 20-minute, single-room anti-game (per the itch page's description) is maybe the best and most succinct encapsulation of the gameplay, appeal, and themes of the soulslike game genre. You play as the eponymous Dark Queen of Mortholme, reveling in the destruction of an upstart hero come to slay you and end your reign of terror. End their life by swinging a big fuckass mace, charging forward in blue flames, and/or summoning a pillar of purple energy (the evilest kind of energy) beneath their feet. But over time, the hero learns. And adapts. And gets better at dodging your attacks.

Then the dialogue begins. There's a whole world out there, beyond your throne room, and they get to experience it and grow and change. But you don't. You only have access to the same old stuff, the same old tricks. I would never call the Dark Queen an old dog, but, well...you know how the saying goes.

Anti-game is the perfect descriptor for this piece of art. It is, as far as I can tell, completely scripted, with no amount of skill or reactivity on the player's part able to change the inevitable outcome. And yet, I still found myself interested in the next part. What will the hero say on their next entrance? What more will I learn about the tragedy of power, the rot at the center of every Souls game? What new way will the hero learn to seemingly taunt me? (I may never know the same kind of frustration as me swinging my ludicrously large mace only for that little pixel fucker to be just out of reach.)

This game sounds like a shitpost (what is it like to experience Dark Souls from the boss' POV?), but it's so much more than that. It's a gorgeous little anti-game with stellar writing, and everyone should take 20 minutes out of their day to give it a try.
