Katara has always been my favourite character and she doesnt deserve the hate just for mourning her mother.

The thematic through lines between Spinning Silver and The Scholomance drive me absolutely insane. It is so fascinating, seeing themes resurface across an author's body of work.

You've got paying for things with honest hard work (mana, Magreta's hand-sewing), VS paying them with exploitation and other people's lives (malia, Chernobog's magic clothing). You've got mothers who set up their children as bet as possible (Gwen, Silvija) VS mothers who sold them for their own gains (Ophelia, Minartius' mother). You've got monsters of endless hunger (Mawmouths, Chernoborg). You've got all our righteously angry girlies (El, Miryem, Irina). And you've got people coming together as a circle (all the circle castings in the Scholomance, the Staryk King's capture)

It's also interesting of course to see where themes don't repeat. The Scholomance has a huge focus on collective action that's not very present in Spinning Silver. And Spinning Silver has a lot to say about personal dignity, about the "thousand tiny deaths" of seeing yourself ground down by abuse, which the Scholomance doesn't say much about. But just. GOD. The parallels.

being mentally unwell about aldella again. they need each other. they hate each other. they have two kids (because they don’t speak about the third). they have no secrets (because not saying them means they don't exist). they understand each other. they don't know each other. they can't comprehend what it would be like without the other (because they're in love, right?). they lie awake at night wondering what it would be like if they other was just a bit more understanding, just a bit more open . . . because that's the problem, right? why can't it work out. they're perfect. they're supposed to be perfect. they're broken. they're not broken. they can't understand what it would be like if they didn't have each other to lean on . . . but what would it be like without the black hole of nothingness that is their lack of trust? maybe that's needed for them to be them. maybe they'll always be like this . . . maybe they were doomed to be together instead of fated to be together. but it must've been fate, right? because without fate they wouldn't have each other . . . which is worse. worse than whatever they have right now . . .

like on some level I get that having a good relationship with my dad in the present requires both of us to pretend like most of the last 20 years didn't happen. well it's mostly me pretending, I don't think he gives a shit. and I'm okay with that! I would've traded anything in the world when I was a kid to get to have my dad be the way he is now. but also there's a little kid who lives in my chest and is gnawing at my ribs and it wants to hear my dad list out every single thing he ever did to us and apologize for all of it. which is never going to happen.

Things that could've improved UTY:

Keeping the deja vu effect that Undertale had and have it influence how the main characters interact with Clover/Clover's flavor text in certain areas

Make Flowey operate as the Hint System, where almost all of his "helpful advice" are just thinly veiled insults directed at the other characters/are further attempts to isolate Clover from everyone else

listen i'm actually glad they didn't kill off Jamie's dad on the show because that is something that imo would have required a larger storyline about jamie dealing with the aftermath to be done right. There's like, zero chance of Jamie handling that news well, and it would've have completely fucked him up even more after just coming off of a whole episode about how Jamie Isn't Doing Well. But realistically it would've just been that one line and then the writers being like welp he's dead so problem solved! xx which is deeply goofy and unsatisfying

on the other hand...the 10 seconds where I thought James Tartt Sr. was dead? best 10 seconds of my life!!!
