okay so MCU canon Peter in DC is all funny and games but what about comic canon Peter? Peter who’s in his 30s, whose life is falling apart(again) and has clones to deal with(man I hate the fact that Ben became evil :(.)

extra points if Miles and/or Mayday is with him. This single dad is STRUGGLING. And the bats wanna help him/his kids cause man! Look at them :(

Peter B. Parker could, 100%, picture landing in (yet another) alternate universe. You know what? As a matter of fact, he expected it.

What he didn’t plan for, however, was being stranded in another universe with his baby girl strapped to his chest. 

But here he was, crouched in a narrow alley in the darkest corner of Gotham City, New Jersey. From the name alone, Peter knew he landed himself in a section of the Multiverse Miguel had expressly labeled as off limits. It wasn’t his fault he’d landed here, though!

One minute he’d been web-swinging through New York, enjoying a rare peaceful day with Mayday babbling happily, and the next he was crash-landing onto a grimy rooftop in the most dangerous city he’d ever seen. It was like New York turned up to eleven, all shadows and towering gargoyles, dripping with rain that seemed perpetual. The interdimensional bracelet he’d been given to travel the multiverse was sparking and smoking in his pocket— total toast. He was officially stranded. 

Ok, so it maybe, kinda sorta, been an eensy weensy, tiny bit Peter’s fault. 

Peter’s, very high-tech and likely expensive bracelet had been, uh, scratched in a fight the day before. Barely even a nick! He swears he could’ve reattached the wires and fixed the screen. 

He probably should’ve also taken the watch out of his robe pocket before he started swinging Mayday to daycare. 

MJ was going to be so mad. 

It became evident early on it’d take a little bit to find a way home, or for someone to find him. If it had just been Peter, he could’ve roughed it on some rooves and abandoned buildings. It wouldn’t be a big deal, he knew he would be getting home eventually. Being a little smelly was the least of his worries. 

But he had his baby girl with him. 

So, with the money in his wallet, he found an under-the-counter, rundown but otherwise warm, apartment in a place called Crime Alley. (What a seriously terrible name) Peter started pulling together whatever side gigs he could, fixing appliances, tuning up electronics, just enough to get by. Even for a guy who was used to scraping by, the situation felt bleak, especially with Mayday depending on him. 

His little red-headed whirlwind was still too young to understand what was happening, but she noticed the tension and started clinging to him more tightly. Peter knew he couldn’t keep this up forever, but he wasn’t sure how to trust anyone in a city that had both criminals and vigilantes lurking around every corner. When he spotted someone in a cape swinging overhead, he instinctively hid in the shadows, holding Mayday close, her tiny face tucked into his shoulder.

But the Bats noticed him. 

It was hard not to notice a single dad with no records, no job, and no explanation for why he was squatting in Gotham’s most dangerous neighborhood. Bruce, ever vigilant, put out word to the family to keep an eye on him. 

Jason, who patrolled Crime Alley, wasn’t thrilled about the idea. “A guy moved into my turf with a baby?” he grumbled to Tim. “Either he’s got a death wish, or he’s crazy.” 

Tim, on the other hand, was fascinated by the mystery. He dug through every database he had access to, and then some. But “Peter Parker” returned zero results— at least, none that matched this Peter Parker. no criminal record, no birth record, no online footprint. It was like he just spawned in! 

Dick didn’t have a whole lot of opinions. He thought the man was nice, though he had only met him once in a routine mugging. He evidently cared for his daughter, and matched Nightwing’s wit and humor pretty nicely, too. He looked annoyingly familiar too. Maybe it was Tired Dad Chic? He kind of reminded him of Bruce, in a way. 

Steph seconded the funny part. This Peter guy could be one of those dark-humor comedians. 

From what they observed, and conversations supplied by Jason (who was his neighbor in a series of fortunate events), Peter really did seem to just be an ordinary guy.  

Then one night, Peter was picking up groceries from a corner store when he felt a tap on his shoulder. He turned to find a man in a ski mask brandishing a knife, gesturing for his wallet. 

“Hand over the money, and I won’ hurt ya’ kid.” The man threatened, waving his knife around threateningly. Peter tensed, dropping his groceries in favor of cradling Mayday closer. 

Peter blinked at him tiredly. “The best I can offer is some lint and a can of beans.” 

The man tensed, stepping closer in an attempt at intimidation. Peter thought that his face turning red with anger was kind of funny.

“Don’t fuckin’— are you makin’ fun of me?” The man fumed. Peter might have let out a sleep-deprived chuckle, partially forgetting to respond. 

The mugger lunged, and before he could dodge, Peter felt a searing pain in his side as the blade plunged in, his vision blurring with the shock. Normally, Peter would’ve disarmed the guy without breaking a sweat, but tonight, with Mayday in his arms and his body worn from days of restless sleep, he kind of just… blinked and the knife was there. 

Peter blinked again, then looked back up at the man.

“Oh, wow,” he said, his voice dripping with deadpan sarcasm. “A knife in Crime Alley? Super original. Really, I’m honored to be a part of your creative process.”

The mugger blinked, clearly caught off guard. Peter rolled his eyes, adjusting Mayday to better apply pressure to his side. “Next time you stab a guy, maybe aim for someone with insurance.”

The mugger stumbled back, looking increasingly confused by Peter’s lack of fear. Peter sighed, bouncing Mayday gently as she began to fuss. “Listen, I’m already running on no sleep and the caffeine fumes of yesterday’s coffee. And now you’re just making my night even worse.”

Peter winced, feeling the slow but consistent leak of blood. His healing factor was helping, but it was dulled due to lack of sleep and hunger. 

Between one long blink and the next, someone had jumped down and knocked out Peter’s would-be mugger. 

After another blink Peter realized he was on the ground, Mayday’s wails filled the air, her cries echoing down the alleyway, and Peter tried to smile through the pain. “It’s okay, baby,” he mumbled, clutching her tightly. “Daddy’s fine… just a little… scratch.” But his vision was going hazy as he pressed a hand to his bleeding side. The world began to spin.

One of the vigilantes that Peter recognized as Red Robin rushed over, talking hurriedly into a comm. Peter blinked up at him, his mouth curling into a weak smile. “Hey, nice costume,” he muttered. “Does the utility belt come in dad sizes?” 

Red Robin blinked in surprise, but otherwise keept his focus as he worked to stop the bleeding.

“It doesn’t, unfortunately.” Red Robin offered, popping open his emergency med kit. “I’ve got help on the way, ok? Stay awake for me.” But his attention was snagged when Mayday, overcome with distress, reached out to him, her tiny hands gripping his arm. She wasn’t just clutching it— she was sticking to him, her fingers locked like suction cups on his suit. Tim’s eyes widened as she scrambled up his arm, scaling it like a bug on a wall. 

Red Robin took it in stride, scooping Mayday up as he continued to work. Peter had been on the Meta radar for a bit— a few things here and there just a little off, and it was mostly based on Red Robin’s time spent with super-powered individuals. 

But as he patched up Peter, he discreetly swiped a sample of blood, stashing it in his belt just as the Batmobile pulled up.

Later that night, he ran the sample through the Batcomputer, expecting some small lead. A Meta, possibly insect-based? What with how the kid had stuck to him. Instead, the results left Tim absolutely speechless. 

Peter Parker, the man who was in his early 40s and a single father, didn’t just match someone in the system— it matched Dick Grayson.

Not as a brother, or a cousin, but as a son. 

Tim must’ve ran the test at least 100 times. It came back the same every single time. 

Tim called Bruce and the rest of the family, each of them crowding around the screen with varying levels of shock and amusement as the analysis rolled in. Dick was dumbfounded, staring at the results in disbelief. 

“You’re telling me this guy is my… son?” he stammered, struggling to wrap his mind around it. 

Bruce, socially unaware in all his glory, tried to comfort Dick. “He’s likely from far into the future. Barry said there was a ripple in the timestream around the time Peter showed up.” 

“So what does that make Mayday?” Jason asked, snickering. 

“His granddaughter?” Steph said with a teasing grin. 

“Wow, Dick. You went from a dad to a grandpa in the same minute.” 

“That’s gotta be a world record.”

“You think we can submit this for a Guinness World Record?”

Dick groaned, rubbing his temples as Jason laughed and clapped him on the shoulder. 

“He’s from the future, right? Something must’ve gone wrong on his end," Tim said, folding his arms with a thoughtful look. "He’s definitely got the skills. Moves like you, Dick. It's obvious he's had training.”

Dick couldn't help but smirk, puffing up a little with pride. “Of course he does. He’s got Grayson blood in him, after all.”

Jason snorted. “Yeah, because the whole ‘falling on his face with a baby strapped to him’ bit? So graceful.”

Tim rolled his eyes, trying to stay on track. “Look, I don’t know why he didn’t come to us for help in the first place, but the point is, he’s family. We should get him back to his time, if that’s even possible.” He looked over to Bruce. “Are any speedsters available? Maybe the League could lend us Wally or Barry—"

“Hold on,” Dick interrupted, frowning. “I’m not sure we’re ready to ship him off just yet. The guy’s been trying to make it on his own. He’s got a baby to look after, and I think he’s afraid of dragging us into whatever’s going on with him. You know this family and their pride.”

Damian, who had been silent up to this point, finally piped up, his arms crossed. “I’ve seen him with the baby. She’s… persistent.” There was an almost begrudging respect in his tone. “But he clearly doesn’t have the resources to keep her safe here. If he did, he wouldn’t be living in Crime Alley.”

Dick nodded. “Exactly. The guy’s holding it together with duct tape and dad jokes. We can help him and get him back on his feet while we figure out a way home.”

Bruce, listening intently, finally spoke up. “He’s right. Until we find a way to get him home, Peter and his daughter stay here. We’ll pull together whatever resources we can to help them both.” 

Steph and Tim shared a look. He just wanted to meet his grandson and great-granddaughter. 

There was a beat of silence as everyone absorbed the decision, and then Tim looked at Dick, a small smirk playing on his lips. “So… you ready to be a dad, Dick?”

Dick flushed, looking a mix of horrified and pleased. “I’ll just stick to ‘Uncle Dick’ for now. Baby steps.”

EXTRA:

“Hey,” Jason drawled, barely suppressing a smirk as he looked over at Dick, “you think we can submit this for a Guinness World Record? Fastest unplanned parenthood, or maybe most confusing family reunion?”

Dick rolled his eyes but couldn’t quite hide his grin. “Very funny, Jay. Maybe we can submit you for most inappropriate comments per minute.”

Jason chuckled, clapping him on the shoulder. “Just saying, man, it’s impressive. One day you’re Nightwing, lone acrobat extraordinaire, and the next? Boom— you’re the proud father of a scruffy, interdimensional— what'd you say it was, Tim? Spider-dad? A Spider-dad.”

Tim snickered, glancing up from his laptop. “We’re all just living in a 'Strangest Family Reunion’ reality show at this point. Besides, if anyone’s submitting to Guinness, it should be Peter for most relentless optimism under terrible circumstances.”

Bruce cleared his throat, giving them all a look. “Enough. This isn’t a joke. We have a situation to handle here.”

Dick, still grinning, turned back to Bruce. “All right, fine, we’ll save the record-breaking for later. Right now, I say we start by finding this guy and getting him some real help.”

Why even bother writing when you wont write part 2s to most of your shit man like we have to wait for months for u to even remember u had to write a part 2. is it so hard to just give us what we want? I'm saying this with all respect, but it feels like u just lead us on to believe u will continue and then u dont

You most definitely are not saying any of this with respect. That's first.

I have a feeling this is about "obsession" lmao. I'm writing it, as I've said countless times that I'm working on it. And even if I wasn't, you have no right to demand me to write anything. I take the time out of my day, sit down and write for hours and publish my work for free. So don't come here and fucking whine about how I should do what I do. That's extremely disrespectful of you. I don't owe you shit.

And as for everything else, I know people sometimes want a second part to a specific work, mostly when I leave the ending up to their own interpretation. If I have an idea, or if I feel like I could write a good continuation, I will do so. If I dont' have any ideas, or simply don't wish to continue, then that's what I'll do. This is my blog, my work, my ideas, and my writing. Don't like it? Hon, there's no one keeping you here.

You could have simply and respectfully asked me if/when I'll do a part 2 to something instead of embarrassing yourself like this.

you said you wanted people to ask you how you've been doing but you clearly stated in your pinned post that you don't want no friends. so you can't expect a stranger to keep track of your blog and feelings. if i were ur moot or something maybe i would've cared a little more for what you do than just reading for my sake but since u didnt wanna make no friends, i guess not. i mean we all have busy lives so its kind of unrealistic to expect strangers to keep up with your whereabouts or wellbeing. there's tons of other blogs out there and some authors might have a better bond with their readers (not saying you don't) and so it might make the readers more inclined to check in on the author.

and i know its not that hard to reblog and comment and be appreciative of someones work but a stranger might just be scrolling, unaware of the struggles and standards that author had to go through. and they might not feel comfortable openly reblogging smut but it depends on people really. so it'd be wrong to blame random people. everyone may feel different towards your works or anyones work.

also, that "part two" rambles might just be because the readers found a common interest among others who commented and asked on wanting part twos and then it led to your inbox and cmnt section being filled with pt 2 asks.

most readers often ignore praising the author bcuz they think others will or have done it looking at the amount of notes your works usually receive. but i guess thats how tumblr mostly works? the amount of notes a work has is considered the sole form of support for the work/blog and readers mostly assume it'd be likes.

yeah i understand u want praises for your work bcuz ngl it really makes one smile to receive open love for their work. but now that you've decided to leave so suddenly bcz of the lack of appreciation and pt 2s, we wont be able to change our actions and support u the way u want it anymore cuz ur leaving.

You had to be an absolute fucking idiot to not notice the signs.

I mean - you didn't notice it at first, because you are an absolute fucking idiot - but then you actually saw something - someone, rummaging around in the fridge.

Like any normal - sane person would, you quickly retreat to your room after seeing an unknown man in the kitchen. An actual man with frizzy untamed hair and all-black clothing, save for a dark green sweater. Did he even have shoes on? You didn't really care enough to actually stay and analyze the man.

Again, like any normal, sane person would do, you call the police. You didn't recognize the large body to be anybody of Kappa-Sig, so you immediately dialed the number of emergency - ahaha, just kidding!! You aren’t a fucking normal and sane person! What you do is actually get a camera and step out of your room.

Stepping down the stairs quietly in your socked feet - avoiding the creaky stairs.

Ah, but alas. Once you peek into the kitchen, the male was gone. You drop your camera - screeching in pain as the fucking thing lads on your goddamned foot. "FUCK!" You cried out, crouching and dropping to sit on your bottom.

The other girls were at school that day - some had free periods and doing whatever. You skipped. Knowing you would have to pay something to someone for skipping a singular day.

Later that same day - The Moaner called, shortly after you falling on your ass. You immediately crawled towards the front door and picked up the phone.

The conversation went something like this;

"what did you do to the baby, billy?"

"yeah what'd you do to the fucking baby, billy."

"where's anges, billy..?"

"ayo, wheres anges?! WHO THE FUCK IS ANGES??? you been cheating on me billy?? oh wait if you're mocking a voice of one of your parents - maybe even a babysitter or guardian. then.. anges is your sister. or friend?? dude o-m-g what im like, a detective doin' some detective work n' shit."

"y/n.. where's billy?" he asked in that wailing.. high-pitched voice.

"oh shit, you know my name? ion know bro.. wheres billy? wheres billy..?!" You repeat.

"billy knows what you did last night..." He spits into the phone. "pretty pink cunt. pretty cunt. pretty pretty pretty pretty..."

Anyways. You had called him a little bitch and he hung up. You guess if Billy really did know what you did, he would've had to be there to see it. Somewhere. LATER THAT DAY - Present time.

You had a little alone time despite being alone the entire day. you catch my drift?

You cleaned yourself up and had disposed of the towel you placed under yourself, not wanting to dirty or piss accidentally on your bed.

Soon, you were drawing on the floor, fucking around with waterpaints - when the goddamned phone rang. A string of curses fall from your lips.

As you took a single step outside your room, the ringing stopped for one moment, before starting up again.

Quickly, you step out fully and jogged down the hallway. Peering down the stairs to see a - well. That figure from earlier - from the kitchen. You take two steps down the stairs.

"AYO?" You shout, immediately putting up your defences. "you know, ive read about this somewhere." You narrow your eyes, squinting at the male.

"ayo - ayo chill." You take a stumbling step backwards as he twitched, falling onto your ass, your ankle rolling. You curse before peeking up -

"Oh FUCK - oh FUCK??" You realize, he was halfway up the stairs. Oh my fucking god, where were the goddamned other girls. School still? What time was it? Fuck you don't know.

"Billy.. Billy likes you. Billy likes pretty piggy. Pretty p - piggy cunt." He spits out the last letter.

"You know what Billy. I like you too. You're pretty chill." You let him come closer, dominate hand clenched in a fist by your side. You let him take a few steps closer. The deranged male looms over you. His peach.. sickly yellow skin. Crazy brown eyes peer into your own.

"billy knows what you're doing. billy doesn't like it."

You sweat under the pressure. "What the fuck - ?" You let the curse slip past by your lips as the male falls onto you. You scream in surprise as the male practically dry humps against your hips slowly.

Pushing him away, you hear the front door open.

"Y/n!" You recognize the voice as Barb. The male glares angrily into your eyes, a warning for something, then scrambled off you and quietly scuttles down the hallway. You wonder where he goes.

"Dude!" You shout out from the floor, before pushing yourself up. "Holy shit you would not believe what happened - " You pause immediately. You were sure he could hear you. You change the subject.

"Bro nevermind i’m going to sleep again don’t fucking bother me!"

"I'll tell the other girls then!" Barb called back. You see her wave lazily before she leaves your line of view.

You scrambled down the hallway, to your room.

Where this little goddamned fuck was fucking with your water paints. Once you had entered the room, his attention was solely on your figure.

"OI!" You whisper-shout. His eyebrows jump up in confusion. "Stop fucking with that!"

Billy leaps away, onto your bed. He bounces for a few moments before you drag your attention back to your paints. You immediately began to clean up.

Once finished, you turn your bitch-ass attention to little Billy.

“Billy. How’d you get in the house fool? Oh wait, if you were actually forreal rummaging through out fucking fridge then.. do you live here?”

“billy’s been here forever. billy doesn’t like sharing his house. billy likes you.”

“damn lmao. thanks chief. anyways don’t kill me or ill fucking fuck you over from the other side.”

“billy likes pretty piggy.” he said ferociously.

you begin to ramble on to the male, asking him questions here and there about why he was there and why the fuck didn’t he kill you, you got the same answers as before, going on and on as you lie next to the seated, criss-crossed legged male, an arm behind your head as you tell him about your favorite shit to do and such.

Soon, it was okay. Billy was chill enough to actually not kill you, he told you in broken words that he lived there like he fucking said before but you don’t listen lmfao, he had hung around you alot when you had gotten home from your classes, sometimes waking up to the male besides you when you wake - you had caught him watching you shower, and offered him a shower as well. With no hesitation, he stripped and hopped it, immediately groping your body as his tongue licked upon the skin on your neck. It was a weird - sexual yet friendly relationship. You literally had no idea where this was gonna go,

RWBY LiveThoughts: V8E7

Since I finally have time for it today, lets make sure Im all caught up for the hiatus. 

Before we get fully started, an idea; Its not a war crime if they’re Grimm. Then its just self defense. So break out the napalm, the cluster bombs, the chemical weapons, the fun stuff. Make em regret it, yeah?

And we start off...on a farm. Looks like my moms old farm in South Dakota. Even on Remnant, hay is best used in bales.

Waiiiit. Thats the place the Whale set down isnt it. I see a Sayber running. Ah, and the Atlas military! Surely, the vanguard of a massive force to hold the line! Also Im glad to see a close up of the helmet for once, I want to make my own. Also, the gloves, and the rifle itself. Not sure why it doesnt have a stock, seems kind of silly...

And airships too, so they got some fire support...whats that wall behind them though?

Also it TOOK US 8 FUCKING SEASONS to get a close up of these FUCKING Weapons. 8. FUCKING. SEASONS. Okay maybe more like 5 cause they didnt first appear till 3 or so but come on. Im so picking this shit apart later.

Atlas field harvesters resemble Halo’s JOTUN Farming equipment. As wel as our own. No surprise there.

Let’s Make Anal Great Again! Enemas & You.

First off I need to say if you decide to do anything I write about here you are doing it at your own risk. 

Ok, so I have been giving myself enemas for a little over a year now and have found a great boost to my sexual experience. Its a little weird to get started with but I got use to it fairly quickly. If you decide to do this you might find anal a lot more pleasurable if you didn't enjoy it before or if you did enjoy it before you might find it even better. Personally I did not enjoy anal much but after doing this I find it really enjoyable. I really like seeing my partners reactions to how easy and smooth the experience is. The experience is also far more “cleaner” now after doing regular enemas. No need to fuss around with lube anymore and work at it back there. Having a readily lubed clean butt allows your significant other to literally trip into you. Having all that suddenly appear inside you is an amazing sexual feeling.

Let me talk about the cons before we continue. This can be time consuming to some. I feels it’s just part of my week at this point and don’t really notice it at all but starting out it can be a hassle. The next thing is going #2. I do not want to be gross but you do need to be warned. Your #2s will be quick. Due to having a coat of lube inside you at all times you will pass very quickly and can be a surprise if you aren't ready for it.  I personally try for a #2 when I need to go for a #1 and don’t have any issues but your results my vary. I also eat a vegetarian diet which might have something to do with the simplicity of my #2s.

So how do I go about doing this? I started off by doing them every morning. I found that after about a month I only needed to do it about every 3 to 5 days. I use a 500ml syringe which might seems like a lot. You wont need the whole 500ml. I use closer to 250 to 300ml. The reason you want to go with a larger size is because the tips are larger and stay inside you with less issue. You can go for a smaller one but you might have trouble with leakage and need to refill mid enema which from my experience isn't ideal. I also find the larger size easier to clean and keep sanitary. 

The mix I use is one half warm water (150ml) to one half lube (150ml) with a few drops of a scent of my choice, usually jasmine but anything will do. The measurements end up being very simple equaling 300ml. Water and lube doesn't mix well but thats fine you just need to get them together and in you.

I usually do this alone but if you can get help it can be a lot of fun and makes it a lot easier. 

Step 1: Mix your water/lube, rinse out your syringe with warm water and fill the syringe with about 300ml of the mixture.

Step 2: Relieve yourself by going #2. Take your time and be thorough.

Step 3: Clean yourself off preferably in the tub or shower and get your butt ready for the syringe.

Step 4: Squat low and insert the syringe as far as it can go without causing discomfort. This will get easier after you do this a few times.

If you have a partner I find going to all fours with your butt as high as you can get it or on your back rolling to your upper back/neck area, again with your butt as high as you can get it to be the 2 best positions for this. All fours is probably better if this is new to you.

Step 5: Slowly empty out the the entire syringe into yourself. Try your best to hold it in. It gets easier with time. Early on it was really uncomfortable but now I would do this and working on getting the rest of my day started. 

Step 6: Hold it for about 5 minutes or as long as you can. I have a good feel for it now so I sometimes even leave it for as long as an hour. If I’m staying at home I would risk longer. If I am going out I would relieve myself at work or where ever I’m going depending on how far it is.

Step 7: Relieve yourself into the toilet and clean up.

Step 8: This isn't mandatory but I do it unless I decide to stop at step 6. I fill another 50 to 100ml of the mixture and insert it again to hold. There can be leakage at any point throughout these steps but I find it to be minimal to non existent. Your results may vary.

So there it is! This is how I became a lube dispenser.

I just made a whole DnD adventure based on Coffee.

Okay hear me out ... I recently convinced my coworkers to do a DnD one shot and I am ecstatic!!!

I am a part time Barista at Starbucks (plus I have 4+ years working in coffee) and I have been trying to get my coworkers to play DnD with me since I started working there. Well today I finally convinced several of them to join me for a whole Oneshot! But ... I don’t plan on giving them just any one shot, no. These coworkers of mine eat,sleep, and breathe coffee and they deserve a truly special experience.

So I secretly have created a whole adventure I am tentatively calling it The Dungeon of Brewed Chaos.

The whole story is going to start off with a family of a powerful and long dead mage asking this group to go into this powerful mages tomb to retrieve the inheritance that he left. Many have tried to retrieve it but few have made it out alive. What my players WONT KNOW is that the Mage was actually addicted to coffee but was cursed by a God for his glutinous ways with coffee, the moment he decided to drink coffee he slowly started to go insane and suffer a painfully slow death.

This whole dungeon is not only going to go through the process of coffee making, but it is also going to BE COFFEE! ,I.e.,

-the dungeon is going to be shaped like a coffee cup

-they will have to deal with several coffee related traps (syrup that 1/2s their speed/coffee beans that cascade into the room and potentially suffocates them)

-It’ll end with them entering a room that is the exact layout of our Starbucks store with the dead mages skeleton clutching a cold dusty cup of coffee

I am going to play it off as a super serious DnD dungeon only for them to realize at the end that it is all about Coffee!!! I am so excited 😆

Frisk: doesn’t sing often (i love the headcannon that frisk is mute/nonverbal) but likes to sit with alphys and ralsei - signs for the choir

Papyrus: working on softening his voice (has the loudest chest voice in the alto section) but actually has really constant tone and loves the whole choir to death

Risk Of Rain 2 Items

I want to increase the pool of items in my game and make them more unique but I wasn't sure of things I could do so I decided to look at risk of rain 2s item pool for inspiration as risk of rain 2 is one of the main inspirations behind my game. 

While dealing 20% extra damage to bosses is a particularly simple item it relates to my game with its focus on the bosses so I could use this as a starting point for making more boss-only related items. 

When the player isn’t fighting a boss they’ll most likely be fighting big groups of enemies which I’ve found so far can be overwhelming. while that's mostly due to lack of balance I think having an item like this which can do damage to all enemies at once could be very helpful, especially since it’ll help the player defeat more enemies, more quickly which can help them be faster and more efficient. 

While it doesn’t directly relate to any part of my game I think having an item like this would be a good idea as it gives a very straight forward direct buff to the player but it will also force them to better keep track of their health. 

I want the main obstacle to the players success to be the time limit on the bosses returning rather than them running out of health so it makes sense to include lots of easy access easy to use healing items like this one so the player still has to worry about their health but the time limit will still be the main problem.

In my game there may eventually reach a point where the player feels like they have enough to be able to beat the game and wont want to fight lower level enemies so having an item like this where they can sprint past enemies and take less damage if they do get hit so they can be more prepared for the bosses would be a good idea, and I could make it drop later in a run as the player may want other more helpful items earlier on.

Now, while there might be Commanders who have Banshee`s in numbers (more than a handfull) they are far between. So even after adding another Mech (perhaps the only legal one) to the mix, most Commanders would have plenty of room in their formations. And, as there were both waves and circuits to fight in, why not fill those rooms with bigger Mechs to fight in those events? Actually, provided you got the (few) Mechs fighting in the climb the best weapons/equipment they could carry, there is no downside to doing so. Although some few Commanders bring only the legal Mechs to the arenas, there is no actual need to do so. As for us.... There were no more than two Banshee`s in the hangar, and even after adding a Novum as scout there would be room for three dozen aditional Mechs. On the other hand, I would be busy in meetings for the later part of the climb, quite possibly for the scramble as well. So only the legals were sent in this time. When we arrived at K3 as the absoute junior when it came to piloting licences, there was a certain amount of butterflies in my stormach. When your entire force masses less than an Regis and most of the contestants outmass you at least a dozen to one, the feeling is normally understandable, -but understated. Here on the other hand, those massive forces probably contained few if any legal Mechs. At least that was what I hoped. My hopes seemed to hold up however, and we raced through massive, (but for the moment impotent) formations with only light opposition. A short while later we parked on the top slope position. The crew were told to hold as best they could, and try to get some footage in the bargain. As feared, the event ended before my return. But the crew had managed to cling to the slopes despite being bested a couple of times, and had even managed to save the recording equipment through the two relocations. The footage taken showed that this time the winners had been. Add in some serious imbalance between the tops (mount Olympus alone had more contestants than K2, K3 and K5 combined), and the only question was how many unclaimed medals there would be. In the end a total of nineteen Bronzes (including all from K2) had to be returned for resmelting. The last half-hour saw only two Golds changing hands, while four were held for more than two hours. Was this due to strong winners, if so perhaps the fighting for the rest of the prizes were closer? Best way to find out is to look at the number of medals held for more than 30 minutes in this event: .............Silvers......Bronzes Div 1 ....1 of 4.........1 of 10 Div 2 ....4 of 4.........0 of 0 Div 3 ....0 of 4.........1 of 9 Div 4 ....4 of 4.......10 of 10 Div 5 ....4 of 4.........3 of 3 Div 6 ....3 of 4.........9 of 10 Div 7 ....3 of 4.........7 of 10 Div 8 ....2 of 4.........8 of 9 Div 9 ....4 of 4.......10 of 10 We had four tops (K2, K4, K5 and K9) totally bereft of successfull medal atacks this time. Mount Olympus and K3 were the bright lights here, and almost all medals on those two tops found fresh holders. A total of 11 Silvers(31%) and  twenty-two Bronzes(31%) changed hands. A bit anemic perhaps, but still a higher percantage than for the Golds(22%) Odin`s secret chambers secured the two highest tops, but even that acomplishment takes second seat to the Ronins 2 who claimed the three lowest tops. There were neither unaligned winners nor repeat winners this time. Upcoming event: Progressive Pileup Here we get one of those events where only Mechs in certain positions is included in the fighting. From the first line only the top Mech is included, from the second line the top two, the third line the top three and so on. Adjusting the formation to put the weaker Mechs in the positions that wont fight is probably a good idea. Removing them and putting the best equipment/weapons on those that are left might be an even better idea. Event ends January 28 between 2300 and 2330 New York Time

Prayers of Demigods - Litanies of the Adeptus Astartes

After a break for the weekend lets pick up where we left off, the chief Chaplain ability, the Litanies of Battle. Litanies are war hymns sang by the faithful during a battle, led by Chaplains to extol their brothers to ever greater feats or heroism or endurance. I wont look into the individual chapter litanies today as untill we have a suite of suppliments out it wouldn’t do GW justice to compare them to the 8th edition suppliments, and the Psychic Awakening series has been removed from active rules leaving some of the 1st Founding chapters a little disadvantaged. Your stock Chaplain can recite one Litany a turn in your Command Phase on a 3+ and all know at least Litany of Hate and one other from their respective lists.  Litany of Hate is your old, possibly 6th edition, basic ability, which now requires a 3+ to recite. Unlike the old days and 8th edition this Litany now only affects CORE and CHARACTER units within 6inch of the PRIEST giving them reroll hits in combat. As a stock ability that all Chaplains know, its not like you’re upset that they all get it in addition, and can really help shore up your gunline if you get charged.

Litany of Faith is another AURA ability which is very specialised. Giving CORE and CHARACTER units a 5+ against mortal wounds. Depending on your opponent it could be a potential life saver, a much needed defense against smite spam, and other army abilities that can churn mortal wounds out. I don’t see it getting huge use in a tournament setting as unless PSYKER heavy armies suddenly shoot in power then you’re unlikely to need this litany over others.

Canticle of Hate is your last AURA ability as far as Litanies go, Again affecting CORE and CHARACTER units this is your add two to charge rolls and an extra 3 inch to consolidation and pile in. This is a good one for those reserves and deep striking units if you ca get a Chaplain into position, which is again one of the reasons I like the Primaris Chaplain on Bike but there is a way to pop this off a unit arriving as a reinforcement which I’ll hit on later.

Catechism of Fire allows you to pick a CORE or CHARACTER unit within 6. When that unit shoots the closest visible target, add one to your wound role. Now I used this to great effect in 8th on Assault Centurions, however they are no longer able to benefit as they do not have the CORE keyword. This is a good one if you’re popping down a unit of reserves next to their favoured target, or if you really need to clear that close assault unit coming at you.

Recitation of Focus is similar with a +1 to hit with ranged weapons on a CORE or CHARACTER unit within 6. Great if you’re digging a unit out of dense cover, or want your Devestators to hit aircraft at full BS. I’m interested in this one of Imperial Fists as they now do have terrain traits to deal with and only ignore the armour bonuses. In Devestator Doctrine they are very effective against vehicles and have stratagems to make them better, its nice to see the possiblity to extend this to troops in dense cover and AIRCRAFT.

Exhortation of Rage does what Catechism of Fire does, but for combat only without the need for it to be the closest unit. If you fancy your army getting part of the Blood Angels Chapter Tactic for a turn this is a must, its very powerful, never wounding on less than a 5+ can’t be understated and with the changes to power weapons you could be wounding other marines on 2s... just let that sink in you combat beasts.

The final Litany, Mantra of Strength only affects your Chaplain, adding one to his strength and attacks and increasing his Crosius to to a mighty 3 damage. If you’ve got Gravis sized enemies abound, he could be your beat stick. Some nice options there, but do you want it better?

Your Master of Sanctity gives you two litanies a turn, and you add one to the roll for them plus you know two litanies from the list plus Litany of Hate. Two litanies on 2+ which stack on a unit or can be differant units sounds great and the possibility to combine Litany of Hate and Canticle of Hate for a reliable combat punch cant be understated. If you’ve only got the one unit that needs the litany support, maybe Exhortation of Rage and Litany of Hate, for that reroll hits and +1 to wound combo.

The other benefit Master of Sanctity gives you is the Stratagem that would normally cost 2cp now costs 1 and this is super important. Commanding Oratory is your Chaplain Epic Deed Stratagem. At the start of ANY of YOUR phases you can select a Chaplain that has not recited this turn. He can recite a litany not already recited that auto passes. On a normal Chaplain its 2cp, Master of Sanctity it costs 1. This stratagem is HUGE That reinforcement unit that appeared half way up the board with a Chaplain can now have a litany giving them the +2 to charge maybe, or the +1 to wound closest target after you picked where they arrived. I’ll happily use Chaplains in Drops Pods jumping out with squads on turn one and hitting that plus one to wound.... heavy flamer Blood Angel Devestators anyone? Maybe you like Terminators and want to use that new fancy model GW just previewed for Warhammer Day this weekend, fine use him and a squad of Assault Terminators or, dare I say, Deathwing Knights?

Forget your litany in your Command Phase, here’s your penalty, pay for you mistake or do you fancy suprising your opponent by reciting a litany in the Fight Phase after he’s let you through without overwatch in the Charge Phase because you weren’t a threat, maybe Mantra of Strength yourself? Yeah its super reliable, as it goes off automatically, and I’ll be looking at my collection with a new light, from my Primaris to my Firstborn, they are a great force multiplier and shouldn’t be underestimated.  Now my final thought.... just imagine your 1st Founding non compliant Chaplains, Lemartes and Astorath of the Blood Angels with their unique rules and interplay with DEATH COMPANY.

The Dark Angels with Asmodai and Interrogator Chaplains with their LD debuffs. Some of which can recite those Litanies already recited though with some restrictions.

SPN Over The Seasons.

Since the pilot, Ive noticed a pattern emerge. The pilot was different from every season to follow. Very heavy on the folklore monster hunts, brothers bickering, bromancing, meeting other recurring characters, first time disquising as feds and so forth, but this was all the story and character development stage. Any first season of any show, follows a similar pattern and even if you think it should stay that way, it never really does. After S1, Supernatural began a pattern of 2s.  S2 and 3 were almost identical in how the stories unfolded, how the brothers interracted and what kind of monsters they hunted. They introduced a home base by exchanging a local library for Bobby’s house. They dont have to spend all their time between cases in the Impala or in crappy motel rooms, and they have a place to study at their convenience. S2 also shows us that the show has a very unserious, goofy side. Tale Tales and Mystery Spot (though Mystery Spot was very sad after the first half) S2 introduced the fact that the boys are not immune to having life ruining events happen to them. Dad sells his soul for Dean, Sam gets possessed by Meg, Sam has to kill his love interest, Dean sells his soul for his brother’s life, we learn that death doesnt mean forever and the Winchesters CAN die but asks the question of “is anyone REALLY ever the same after they come back from the dead?” And now that we have established that Hell exists, and the will of God exists, is Dean actually going to Hell?  (intro now to the next set of 2)

Season 4 and 5 were now completely different than seasons before it. Shit starts to get real. First we learn, yes, Hell is a real place and the Winchesters arent immune to that either. We learn time travel is possible, Angels are real and are dicks, God is real, Lucifer is real, and there is a REAL reason why Sam and Dean do what they do. They are part of The Big Picture, the great war between Good and Evil, Destined from the beginning ti fight this battle, between the Archangels and bring on the Appocolypse. We learn Sam, though having strong morals, can be lead to do the unthinable, drink demon blood to supposedly to get revenge on Lilith for sending Dean to Hell, but mostly to show he loses control when Dean is gone that leads to some horrible decisions. Which paralleled Dean losing it when Sam died. We get a recurring Angel and a recurring Demon and we re reminded in the end that not only are the Winchesters willing to do anything to save each other, theyre willing to do anything to save the world, and Sam voluntarily throws himself into Hell to save the world he thinks he ruined. At the end of S5, it leads into S6 with Dean trying to have a life with a woman and kid, and Sam being “different” intro to the next set of 2s. Seasons 6 and 7 are again, different than other seasons. Sam has no soul for half the season, so we learn that sometimes Winchester afflictions might be bad, and also last a while. Dean has a family at home that he willingly leaves to hunt, confirming what Dean always believed, that he cant have a life outside of hunting. We have Bobby who has done more than enough to prove he is family to the boys, and that family really doesnt end with blood, and the Campbells who prove it doesnt start there either.  S6 and 7 also had more humor than previous seasons yet adding some real darkness in Sam’s hallucinations and subequent insanity. We also learn that monsters, though deadly can sometimes be kinda comical (leviathans) and big monsters are (can appear) human... Dragons, Eve, Pheonix Alpha Vamps and so on.  We  lose Bobby in S7 and the boys are back to no home base and staying in random cabins bobby and ruffus had set aside, and very limited lore books to go by. But we also learn that the Word of God is a thing, and there are more Pophets than Chuck .. this leads into Seasons 8 and 9. Seasons 8 and 9 are much different than the seasons before (see the pattern now?) We first learn that though the brothers have this deep abiding twisted codependent love for each other, they are not immune to lying, betraying, and dismissing the others feelings. They fight, they seperate, they lose trust.  Both have come to the point of being martycidal (aka suicidal Winchester style) because they believe their brother doesnt need, love, nor trust him anymore. Sam seems to talk Dean off this ledge in Trial and Error, by affirming in him that hes a genious, the best hunter ever, and he wants to take him to the light at the end of this tunnle (I still llove you man!) Sams is more emotional because he’s made so weak and sick through the trials and just lost people he cared about “because of him” but Dean talks him off that ledge by assuring him, in the most heart wrenching way possible, that he (Sam) is the absolute foremost important thing to him in the world and always will be. We also aquire the Bunker, now the boys have a nice comfy home base they can call home and sleep in warm beds when not on hunts. Season 9 shows Dean making some poor (though) necessary decisions when hes seperated from Sam. First one is when Sam is dying and he tricks Sam into letting an angel  possess him, and when that goes sideways and they seperate again, Dean accepts the MoC without much question, which proves to be a bad idea. What we learn from these 2 seasons, is that the Winchesters should never be seperated... period, What leads into then next 2, is the MoC AND that secondary characters get their own storylines (bleh) S10 and 11 are different from other seasons. The boys learn that they can “trust” natural enemies (witches and demons) if it suits their needs. Sam learns that sometimes its ok, and necessary to discount a persons wishes unless you are ok with them dying or becoming who they are not, or the safety of the world is in the ballance. Yes folks... respect another persons choices, but only if you are prepared to give up on them if it will destroy them or others..The bros dont seperate anymore though they fight pretty much all through S10 in one way or another. And Sam is willing to go against Deans wishes to leave the MoC alone because something bad will happen, and Sam goes behind his back anyway because he needs his brother and wont live without him (parallel S9 and Gadreel)  On the other side, Crowley, Cas, and Rowena all get their own storylines, and it sucks...IMO anyway, if the focus isnt on Sam and Dean it shouldnt be in the show (sorry I had to) but this carries into S12 and I hope it finishes there. S11 has the guys getting along very well all season, enough fighting for crying out loud. But we arent lead into the next 2 seasons, 12 and 13 till the end. The BMoL pop up and Mom is back.

So, needless to say now, that we can say S12 is different, or wonky from the other seasons, we cant deny a patern that has been used since the beginning. Things in this season will lead into S13, which hopefully means there wont be any end in site till at least 15. If the pattern continues.

What’s wrong with Robinson R44 pilots?

Robinson R44 helicopters are death traps, right up there with Mitsubishi MU-2s and Cirrus SR22s – at least that’s according to a lot of articles you read online. A dramatic headline in The Los Angeles Times late last year was the most recent example, warning residents of southern California that “Danger spins from the sky.” It’s a compelling story, and the newspaper even went so far as to calculate the numbers (something most non-aviation publications neglect). But does it tell the whole story?

In the spirit of Richard’s very popular “What’s wrong with Cirrus/Mooney/Bonanza pilots” series of articles, I’d like to offer a more nuanced perspective. This comes from my perspective as an R44 owner and pilot, but also as a longtime safety geek who reads a lot of accident reports. With one foot in the airplane world and one in the helicopter world, I’ve found some of the comparisons between the two quite revealing.

One important similarity is that, as Collins repeatedly found in his articles, the “problem” is usually with the pilots and not the design of the aircraft itself. That may seem like a dodge, but it’s simply what the statistics show. Certainly some models are more forgiving than others, but better training and operating habits seem to correct for most of those weaknesses, as the rapidly improving accident record for both the MU-2 and the SR22 have shown recently.

The numbers

It’s the world’s most popular helicopter, but is it safe?

Let’s start with a look at the statistics, which is not as easy as it might sound. I will restrict my analysis to US accidents, since the NTSB typically shares more complete information and the accident causes are consistently reported. Comparing an accident report from Brazil to one from the US is not always helpful, or even possible. Doing this excludes a number of accidents, since the majority of R44s are flown outside the US, but there are enough aircraft in the US to get a fair read on safety trends.

I will also focus only on fatal accidents. While a non-fatal accident can ruin a day or a career, it’s the fatal ones that most pilots focus on and rightfully so. This restriction also makes for simpler comparisons, since (unlike in airplanes) many very minor helicopter mistakes become accidents. If you taxi a 172 into the side of a hangar, you’ll replace the wing cuff and face some embarrassment. It probably won’t even show up as an incident, much less an accident. On the other hand, if the rotor blades on your R44 clip a hangar, the helicopter might be totalled. This skews the data when comparing accidents and incidents in airplanes vs. helicopters.

Finally, the numbers below include total fatal accidents and fatal accidents per airframe. Many safety studies use accidents per 100,000 hours as the key rate, and it’s a valuable number since it considers the exposure. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to accurately track hours flown by model and that’s especially true for helicopters. I don’t put much stock in the estimates that are published.

One number that is easy to calculate is how many fatal accidents have occurred. Here are the total number of fatal accidents in the US for the R44 over the last 5 years:

2018 – 3

2017 – 2

2016 – 2

2015 – 1

2014 – 5

That’s 13 total over a 5 year period, not exactly a staggering toll, and with 1622 registered in the US that means that 0.8% of the US fleet has been involved in a fatal accident in the last 5 years. For comparison, the Bell 206 series had 12 fatal accidents in that period and a rate of 0.8%. The Eurocopter AStar also had 12 fatal accidents in that period and a fleet rate of 1.3% over the last 5 years.

Comparisons like this are unavoidably apples and oranges – both the 206 and the AStar probably fly more hours per aircraft than the R44, since they’re used by a lot of air ambulance and law enforcement operators. But they are also typically flown by much more experienced pilots and they both have turbine engines. It’s at least interesting that the percentage of the fleet involved in a fatal accident over the last 5 years is as good or better for the R44 compared to two stalwarts of the turbine helicopter fleet.

This is considered “good VFR” by some helicopter pilots.

One final comparison. The Cessna 172, a somewhat similar performing aircraft in the fixed wing world and one known for its good safety record, saw 59 fatal accidents in the 2014-2018 timeframe. With a US fleet of 19,678, that leads to a much lower 0.3% fleet fatal accident percentage. If anything, these numbers show that helicopters in general have a worse safety record than airplanes.

Causes

The raw numbers are directional, but the causes of the accidents and the stories behind the crashes are much more revealing. Here’s a quick recap of those 13 R44 accident causes:

Hit wires shortly after takeoff from a field

Crashed shortly after takeoff due to unknown reasons (there are implications about poor maintenance but the NTSB report is not final)

An IFR training flight crashed in the waters off Hawaii in good weather, but the wreckage was not found so no cause was determined

A low-level flight impacted terrain in a remote area; the pilot had no helicopter rating

Crashed after descending from cruise (maybe with a tail rotor issue, maybe a low pass gone wrong)

Crashed on takeoff – and the pilot was drunk

VFR-into-IMC in the mountains

Improper maintenance led to a control rod detaching and in-flight loss of control

The pilot had a heart attack and crashed trying to land while doing external load practice (a very demanding type of flying)

A crop duster hit wires while flying between fields at low altitude

Midair collision with an airplane in the traffic pattern at a towered airport

Improper maintenance meant a pitch link was not re-attached properly

Crashed after taking off at night from an unlit area and hitting trees

Reading these accident reports, it’s hard to find a consistent problem with the helicopter. Two involved pilots flying illegally (one drunk and one without a rating) and one involved pilot incapacitation. Three involved hitting obstacles at low altitude, and the VFR-into-IMC accident proves that helicopter pilots are not any more immune to this temptation than Bonanza or 182 pilots.

Three trends do jump out. First, private operators have a much worse record than other pilots. That is true in these accidents, across helicopters in general, and even in the airplane accident record. While accounting for roughly 10-15% of estimated piston helicopter flight hours, personal and business use without a crew accounts for the majority of accidents. R44s in particular are often flown by low time pilots – in fact, it’s the only helicopter of any real popularity that is flown by private owners. The typical pilot is completely different from a Bell 206 or an AStar.

The diversity of operations is also unique. From crop dusting to external load flights to law enforcement, R44s are often working machines, rode hard and put away wet (watch this if you don’t believe me). Sure, Cessna 172s are used for a lot of different operations, but nothing like the variety of a helicopter. That means different risk exposures, as the accidents on takeoff from remote locations prove quite dramatically.

Finally, while maintenance is a given, it can introduce the possibility for fatal mistakes in a helicopter. As two of the above accidents demonstrate, the post-maintenance flight is particularly risky. There are certain parts of any helicopter that simply must be installed properly or there’s nothing the pilot can do to recover. Good maintenance and methodical preflights are table stakes for helicopter operators.

Digging deeper

A deeper reading of the accident record (including some non-US reports) shows many accidents that will seem familiar to airplane pilots. There are plenty more examples of VFR-into-IMC accidents and a depressing number of reckless flying mistakes, both of which are hardly unique to the R44.

Post-crash fires do seem to be a problem with certain R44 models.

One issue that does seem to be more common in R44s is post-crash fires. A number of serious but survivable crashes have become fatal accidents because the helicopter caught fire and killed the occupants. The problem stems from a decision by Robinson in the 2000s to use “wet tanks” instead of fuel bladders. This increased the fuel capacity but left the tanks susceptible to post-crash leaks and fires. Beginning in 2009, Robinson switched back to bladders on all new aircraft and incentivized owners of older models to replace the old tanks, so at least the number of aircraft in this camp is declining.

While some law firms have sprung up to focus on this issue, it’s worth remembering that the fuel tanks didn’t cause any of these accidents – they caused them to become fatal. A minor point perhaps, and no comfort for the families involved, but it shifts the focus to crashworthiness rather than aerodynamics or performance.

Inevitably, the discussion about R44s turns to that longtime villain: mast bumping. This topic takes on an almost mystical tone with some non-aviation writers, but it is mostly a matter of physics and it is not unique to the R44. All semi-rigid rotor systems (two-bladed) are susceptible to catastrophic in-flight breakup if the helicopter experiences low G conditions and the pilot does not recover properly (Vertical Magazine published a thoughtful analysis of the issue if you want to read more.)

But mast bumping isn’t really a design defect, it’s simply a fact, whether you’re flying a Huey or an R22. The solution is to avoid low G situations (no pushovers with the cyclic) and practice proper pilot technique if you find yourself in one. That technique is still evolving, too, with some instructors now emphasizing reducing the collective in addition to the traditional aft cyclic. The theory is to reduce the tail rotor thrust and main rotor torque, which will reduce the right rolling tendency.

Speed also matters. Robinson is increasingly emphasizing that pilots should slow down in turbulent conditions: “A pilot’s improper application of control inputs in response to turbulence can increase the likelihood of a mast bumping accident.” For significant turbulence, slowing down from 110 knots to 60 or 70 knots may be required.

Reputation meets reality

Much like the Cirrus, the R44 has been a revolutionary aircraft for personal aviation. In both aircraft, the accident record shows machines with lots of performance being flown by pilots without lots of experience. An R44 can carry four passengers 250 miles at 110 knots – and then land in a 50 ft x 50 ft spot in the forest. That’s an impressive list, but you can earn the certificate to fly that mission in as little as 40 hours of flying. If ever there were a “license to learn,” the Private Pilot – Helicopter is it.

Both the NTSB and FAA have reviewed Robinson helicopters over the years (as they did for the MU-2). The results are telling: the helicopters were found to meet all certification standards, but the FAA wrote SFAR 73 to mandate type-specific training for Robinson R22s and R44s. The organizations were effectively admitting that safety rests with the pilot.

While the lawyers argue over fuel tanks and the engineers argue over mast bumping, helicopter pilots (and safety advocates) should focus on some very practical tasks. For a start, owners must expect and demand good maintenance, and take post-maintenance flights very seriously. Pilots should be rated, rested, and well-trained. That’s obvious, but bears repeating given recent history. This is not the place to pinch pennies or cut corners; if that’s your style then helicopters are not for you.

Helicopters can land almost anywhere; that’s good and bad news.

Pilots should fly above 500 feet if at all possible, and plan off-airport landings very carefully. The helicopter can almost certainly make it into that tight spot, and your passengers will love you for it, but can you as the pilot make it? Researching off-airport sites before getting in the right seat – perhaps including driving to the location for inspection on foot – and wide safety margins are essential.

A cultural change about weather minimums is in order too. The FARs grant helicopters broad latitude to fly VFR in truly scuzzy weather, as low as one half mile and clear of clouds. Many operators take those limitations as recommendations and spend very little time considering the weather before a flight. Unfortunately, the results speak for themselves: even among professional helicopter air ambulance pilots, VFR-into-IMC accidents are common.

I am hardly an expert helicopter pilot (90% of my time is in airplanes), but I have owned and operated an R44 for over 7 years. It is a reliable, capable performer, and I’ve flown it on both long cross countries and on short local flights to tight landing spots. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had flying, but it’s also the most demanding thing I’ve ever done. Because they can do so much, helicopters can lure you into situations without many escape routes. It’s easy to say, “I’ll keep flying even though the visibility is bad, and if it gets worse I’ll land in a field.” That flexibility is great, but are you really disciplined enough to land in that farmer’s field if it’s required?

Helicopters are incredible machines, but they are terribly unforgiving. As the most popular model in the civilian world, the R44 may simply be a notable example of this adage.

Last week, I had my husband's car parked up at work and I was notified that our car was broken into. The passenger side window was smashed and the thief took our GPS unit.
