I think the biggest reason they tried to make Buddy Daddies as less Homo as possible is definitely because they wanted more people to watch this series. As the VAs said in an interview that "Men should watch this". They probably wanted to attract a larger audience, especially men. If they made Kazuki and Rei's relationship even a bit gay, they would lose so many watchers.

A large audience of Anime in general consists of Cis Heterosexual Men. These men won't watch anything that's even remotely gay. Why do you hear all these anime youtubers people never talk about Yuri on ice or Banana Fish? Both of these anime series are pretty popular. But they don't talk about it cuz they don't watch it. They know it's canonically queer and hence, they are never gonna watch it. They refuse that Ymir and Historia were in love. They hate on people who harmlessly ship characters of same gender. They say gay shippers ruin the fandom. Of course, they won't watch Buddy Daddies if it's even a little Homoerotic.

The fact that it's about two men raising a child is already a reason for many people to draw back from watching it. So, if it actually turned out to be a gay, so many of them will refuse to watch it. And that's why Rei and Kazuki acted like "just friends" in the timeskip even after all that happened when they were at The Suwa mansion. It's like that meme where a man uses tape to a fix a hole in a filled water tank. They love each other. They really do. But the creators had to prove that it's purely platonic. But on the other hand one of the producers keeps liking all the KazuRei shipping posts on twitter. Remember the rumor in Haikyuu fandom that one of the ships was going to become canon but due to homophobia, they weren't allowed to make it canon. That might be actually apply to buddy daddies in reality.

So, basically my point is: Miri commenting about Kazuki slipping out to go drinking with a girl and Rei n Kazuki being a little awkard at first when Miri was taking a family picture ; It was nothing more than a marketing strategy. They did it on purpose so the homophobic audience (or audience that just don't want to watch gay content) will still watch the show. They did it to assure that audience that it's not gay. They did it to relieve those "Thank God Buddy Daddies is not gay" kind of people.

Now, What they did was right or wrong, that's subjective. I personally kinda understand why they did this this. And Honestly, us as a fandom shouldn't just let a couple of scenes ruin KazuRei for us. I was actually kinda scared when I came across a time-skip spoiler before watching the episode. I was scared if they will show Kazuki and Rei having wives or something. But THIS is a lot better than that. And gay shippers have had worse than this. But that does not stop us from making all this amazing content about our favorite fictional pairing, does it? So, let's just not overthink it.

They look very happy in the picture. It's clear that they are comfortable with each other.

Last anon, it's easier to say it in words but extremely bad in reality. You sound like you just want JK to confirm your ship Jikook like a hero and save jimin from tkkrs. Do you think in this real world it's happening?

Let's look at their personal lives first ? Their families will be attacked, Antis will be attacking magnate restlessly. Idk if you were here in 2019, but some kjjkrs arranged a bday party for JK in magnate and had to cancel it because they got a Ton of hate calls, messages.. even their staffs were stalked and hated. So imagine a coming out ? They'll eat, especially Jimin's family, alive. JK's brother's business, their rest family businesses, their friends, their close people everyone will be attacked, including other bts members.

Do you think this won't affect them mentally ? This 🤏 amount of peace they have now will be gone forever. They won't stop until Jimin is completely ruined in every aspect and JK goes insane. They can be attacked on streets, while they are just living their lives. Again idk if you were here when Holland, openly gay idol, was attacked in ITAEWON, which is usually called a safe place for queer people.

Now their career ? This high career graph they have will reach sea bed. They will be literally boycotted from performing in music shows, their MVs will be boycotted on national TV channels, their sm accounts will be attacked, there will be protest infront of hybe to disband and kick out Jikook. Their brand deals will be affected, their reputation will be gone, their peers will be attacked, bangtan's whole career will be on danger. Their companies stock value will steep down, their shareholders and investors will pull back. Around the world, this news will be spread like wildfire, in every news channels, YouTube channels, media outlets, social media. Each and every homophobe and bts antis will be mocking them and armys around them. There are many incidents of armys being attacked and ragged for just liking bts in many conservative countries so how about after this gay dating news ? They will be blacklisted and forget about the super stars Jimin and JK status they worked hard for all these years. They can be banned from performing in conservative countries and will be infamous for this news than all accolades they have till now. Fanbases, fan accounts and fansites which are very important for idol will be closed especially forget about more than half of JK's fanbase. Some fanbase even closes after hetero dating rumors duh. Now they may get some new fans and some real ot7 army may whole heartedly support them. But it's a big maybe. But what is the use of getting fans who were here with you for some fans who stanned you for your relationship with your bandmate or out of sympathy or curiosity ?

The damage all these will do to Jimin will be fucking unimaginable. Those fuckers will burn that boy alive. If you don't know Taeyeon was attacked at airport and had to apologize for dating baekyun. So how will they treat Jimin for dating JK ? His life will be in great danger. In short if you want Jimin happy by JK's side the best thing is to be private. Hiding ? Nope but private ? Yes.

BTS are BTS. Those celebrities that got fucked over are not even close to being on the same caliber as BTS. I'm not saying nothing would happen to them, but I think people would hesitate before treating them like they have treated other gay idols in the past.

Before I continue can I just say that people forget? People always forget. Scandals don't last... there is always gonna be something else. Yeah if they come out it will be huge and scandalous but people will move on like they always do.

They will loose fans but they will gain new ones who will stan BTS already knowing there's a gay couple in the midst. Yes they will be banned from going to certain countries ever again. But the countries that would do this are less than those that wouldn't care.

I honestly do feel Jikook have the potential to pave the way for how people view homosexuality over there. BUT it is alot of pressure and I wouldn't blame them if they never came out. The world is indeed a scary place like u described.

But I honestly do think them being from BTS would make the backlash less severe.

That being said, I dont think its happening. Not even in 2025. They will live like a couple hiding nothing, but they won't come out orally. Like some announcement. And honestly as long as they're happy, is all Good.

Can you explain why you hate this ship, and why you hate it so much that you built your whole tumblr identity around hating this one ship? I haven’t read that far into homestuck to know anything about the ship, and I can’t imagine hating anything that much.

From ruining both Dave and Karkat's character arc, ruining the characters themselves in things like the Homestuck epilogues and Homestuck^2, the oversaturation it has on the fandom to even this day, how bullshit that Hussie tries to claim it was planned all long just to pander to his fans, the unhealthy co-dependency they have on each other to forget they have other friends and family members around them, and how rushed it all seemed by Post Retcon just because VRISKA fixed everything on the meteor. I had made this blog because there are still people who like Homestuck and wished it could be better. But speaking out about it gets you labeled as a bigot, homophobe, hater, or any label if you dare criticize the medium. The push of progressive and puritan culture doesn't help things either that everything has to be diverse and drawing a character in a cute anime style is seen as pedophilia. I wanna be the one that helps others speak out about the series. People can send me death threats and insults all they damn want, but I won't be bothered by it. I will still post about why Davekat sucks and how Homestuck as a series could have been better. Let's face it, Homestuck has fallen into irrelevancy. It's not as big as it used to be. Yes, we got a collab cafe. But it's not as giant as let's say Undertale, Friday Night Funkin, and video game or anime related IPs. If the success of the cafe does succeed that Viz Media could try to revive it, it might come back. But until then, it's stuck in the state of limbo with the indefinite hiatus of a shitty sequel and 2 million dollar Kickstarter game that's still yet to be completed from WhatPumpkin after 10-11 years the campaign was first launched and funded.

Confession time; i kinda hate the st writers. They are the reason why the pride was ruined during the vol2 waiting, the reason why we face constant homophobia from mlvns and the ga for shipping byler and all bc they refused to break up mlvn and also included that shit ass monologue. Now we have to wait years to see the conclusion meanwhile ppl gradualy start lose their interest. They ruined Nick's career and reputation for no reason when his site was there for years. The way they say nothing against the apparent fandom homophobia even though it is not even a secret since ppl sharw homophobic comments left and right. The way they use Will's car scene as a memeable moment even though many queer fans were devastated when the scene came out. The way they write these characters. The way they treate Will. The way they treated Robin. I have so much spite and hatred bottled in me and i am only starting to realize it after a year. If byler doesnt become canon i hope all st writers and the duffers lose their jobs and never manage to write ever again. I would even support Netlix going full bankrupt. My respect for the writers all depend on whether or not byler becomes canon and i dont care if it makes me stuck with byler or whatever. After everything the writers pulled, yes, my respect all depend on this choice for S5.

Honestly I see where you're coming from, so your feelings are completely valid. I do believe that the monologue and saving byler for the last season makes narrative sense because of the way they've written the story and how best friends to lovers stories usually work (they normally won't get together until the end of a movie, and you have to think of ST as a 5 season long movie).

I think most of those things you pointed out are more of a fandom problem, like Will crying in the van becoming a meme- I believe it was portrayed very seriously in the show and it was a certain sector of the audience who decided to memefy it. Also, the homophobia would happen even if byler became canon in season 4, sadly homophobes are everywhere in every fandom. I also believe a lot of those things you pointed out are more of Netflix's fault, because using Wills scene as a meme was something accounts like Netflix, Netflix geeked, Netflix UK and other did, but I don't recall strangerwriters doing that (but I may be wrong so please if I am let me know). Their executives were probably the ones who decided to split the season as well, and having vol 2 come out right after pride month (being a terrible coincidence because of the byler-Milkvan storyline and the homophobia that subsequently came from maloobans). If I remember correctly, the writers account has stated a couple times that everyone should be allowed to ship whoever they want. But as you pointed out, sometimes I feel like they could do a little bit more. They tanked Nick's reputation (which I can understand up to a certain point if they are trying to protect the show they are working on from getting spoiled, but maybe they should have made a less vague and incriminating statement), and they definitely could address the rampant homophobia in the fandom more frequently.

It sucks that we need to wait so many years to prove we were right, but think about how satisfying it will be once the season comes out and you watch all of those people have a breakdown, and hopefully you see interviews from the duffers explaining how that was the intention all along. If that's the case, then I'll be happy, but as you said, if all of these was for nothing and byler isn't endgame, I'll definitely consider it queerbaiting, because they have built up romantic feelings for Will on Mike's side, even if some people want to deny it. So yeah, queerbaiting in 2023 sucks, and it's totally valid for you to feel like you won't respect them anymore if they go that route. I think more people need to realize this is not a matter of whether the couple I like ends up together over the couple other people like, it's a matter of whether queer people get a respectful and deserved treatment or not. And if they don't, then they're terrible writers, because if the way they fucked up that storyline, and terrible people too.

But hopefully not. Right now, I'm really convinced byler is endgame and they know what they're doing. We have to deal with crazy Melvin stans meanwhile, but the wait will be over before you notice and they'll get really quiet and embarrassed once they realize how wrong they were. But I'd like for them to address some of the homophobic comments online a little bit more often.

Typing out long paragraphs to prove a point isn't going to suddenly make it valid. I believe anon is right. The misogyny in Naruto does a lot to highlight the relationship between the males. Different aspects of a piece of media are bound to influence each other. Kishimoto wrote Naruto to be similar to a much intense version of a rival-like relationship in his own life. He also acts as if women are part of some foreign species, leading him to say "idk how to write women" as justification for ruining all the arcs of females. Queer baiting is a thing. These things collectively contribute to make Sns so obvious.

So I'm sorry to break it to you but I can't, in a million years, believe that this cishet, married man sat down and intentionally wrote a 700 chapter gay romance. And yes, some pieces of media are unintentional. You just make this piece of art and not everyone will interpret it the same way. Anyone can show up and say "character A looks beautiful. This is an intentional thing done by the artist" when the artist drew character A to look average to their eyes. Kishi does realize that sns must look so fucking romantic to some ppl and he allows us to see it the way we want.

That being said, i don't see the point in arguing whether kishi intended to write homosexual characters or not. Does saying that it was intentional make you feel better about yourself /the ship?? Does that help you glorify your favourite author of all time?? Are you going to sit here and defend this middle aged man who has literally moved on with his life, for something he wrote eons ago?? Which you obviously conveniently missed and came and ranted in the ask section, like some seven year old stubborn child. And you know where I am coming from?? I work in the industry. I know how it works from experience. I also know because I am in the habit of watching films from all over the world since I was four. I make time to actually read about storytelling. I am a cinephile. A lot of fans, such as yourself, are ignorant about how things are done in the actual world. Like I am sorry but you obviously don't know jackshit.

I socialize with a lot of writers, some of them are national and international award winning film makers and I like to pick their brains, because of my own interests. One of them recently got nominated for an Oscar. I would have shared the link had I not been mindful about my anonymity. That's a privilege only special people get (you know who you are). Am I flexing? Let me know when your friend gets nominated for an Oscar, even though I think Murican film awards are quite overhyped, but it's still a major recognition. What I am trying to tell you is that I am coming from a solid background and I give reasoning for it. And I don't see actual counterpoints from you, just a sad little rehash of what the other anon said, also as ignorant.

Anyway, you know why I don't think Kishi's writing is unintentional? The whole reason why Kishi thought it was important to talk about - are they friends? Or brothers? Or More? points to the FACT that he wanted to say something with it. That their true feelings for each other is at the very least, suspect. If they aren't brothers, since Naruto does finally admit he doesn't think Sasuke is his brother when talking to Hagoromo, and if they aren't just friends, as Naruto finally admits in chapter 698, that he doesn't really know how to explain it, what else could it be?? And how is it that I have seen this trope so many times in other gay media, very much derived from personal stories of gay film makers?

Why would Kishi tell the story this way when he makes Sasuke ask Naruto over and over again, to define the relationship, and Naruto keeps saying, because you are my 'friend'? Why waste so much precious panel space when he could have added more fight scenes that otakus just eat up with both hands? Have you asked yourself these questions? Do you even think about writer's intent? Do you even use your head while consuming media?

I have the advantage of having watched I don't know, around fifty films about gay coming of age stories, and talking to actual gay people to compare if their stories or experiences were similar.

The writer's intention says a lot. I get that most fans don't understand the method of writing a story, but to think it's accidental is plain denial mixed with ignorance.

Kishimoto intended to tell a gay love story. Otherwise he wouldn't have told the story in this manner. No way. He deliberately moulded the story that forces the protagonist, who is closeted gay, to answer why he cares about Sasuke so much, and what his feelings for Sasuke mean. Why would there be this intent to define this relationship, had they not been purposely written as two boys in love with each other? And why are we seeing the same dynamic in Boruto which isn't even about these two? Yeah, sure, Kishimoto has apparently moved on but he is still continuing the same dynamic in Boruto, nice, heh.

Why aren't they close to their wives? Why don't they even talk to them, much less spend time with them? But they always have time for each other? They smile for each other and look alive and happy when otherwise they look so dull? Why is Sasuke's marriage such a sham? Why doesn't he kiss or visit his own wife? Why does Kishimoto show Boruto think of his mother when Sarada talks about bento in Gaiden but when she gives it to Naruto in the next chapter, Naruto thinks of Sasuke looking at the bento and not his OWN wife when she is the one who regularly makes it for him?

Do you really not see writer's intent? What is Kishi trying to say here, in a genre where he can't explicitly say it, but has other means that he uses so blatantly? Before you ask me questions, ask them to yourself. If you then have doubts, then maybe come to me. Or don't. I have a huge backlog anyway.

How easily you sweep significant moments under the rug without asking yourself why the writer wrote it this way if he didn't want to say something with it? Writers use everything in their toolboxes to tell their story. Narrative, dialogues, characters, visual imagery, which in Naruto's case, all points to a deliberate intention. You think it all happens in isolation? No thought required?? Maybe you don't do things that way, but don't expect everyone else to be as simple minded as you. I can agree that one can be susceptible to interpreting a piece of art as not intended by the creator. I remember once, when I was working in an art gallery, and admiring a painting. So this old man, a collector stood alongside me, also looking at the painting, and asked me what I saw in it. And I told him. He had a different idea, and he got offended by my reading of it, much to my amusement. But you see, it was abstract art. I can look at a Jackson Pollock painting and say it's about a murder scene. You could say it's about rains. That's the fun about abstract art. But there's nothing abstract about Naruto. If anything, it's too expositional, like any other shounen manga. Love, know your genres. Don't think you can get away with comparing apples and oranges, it's such an obvious ploy.

This is a clip from a dramedy film called 'Sleep with me' and this is one of Quentin Tarantino's acting roles. Now he is being funny here, and even though he makes a lot of sense, it's meant for comedy, that's the whole point of this scene in the film. It is funny. BUT. There is a difference. The difference is TROPES. Writing your script with a line or two that sounds like a character is saying superficial funny gay shit, is different from actually taking those tropes and embedding them in your narrative. The other reason why Top Gun sounds accidentally gay, and is not actually gay, is because otherwise Tom Cruise would never have signed the film, that man is probably gay himself and is notoriously homophobic, and he would sue anyone's ass who as much as breathes about his doubtful sexuality. And secondly, the writer admitted that he didn't write it that way, but he could see how it could be interpreted as gay. But these moments are only for laughs, totally circumstantial and don't add ANYTHING to the actual narrative.

Naruto's story on the other hand is GUIDED by it. Naruto does everything to get close to Sasuke, to understand him, to make him trust him. Kishimoto uses a lot of tropes well explored in global gay media to tell their love story. I have made comparisons with actual films, look for them here and here. I am sorry (not) to say your understanding of narrative is ridiculously poor.

Yes, I know queer baiting is a thing. Apparently, you don't know what it means. You know what is queerbaiting? Ops and eds of Naruto is queerbaiting, such as Blue Bird, Diver, Broken Youth etc. Why? Because the producers knew it ain't never gonna happen. Kishimoto didn't write the lyrics or create the visuals of the ops and eds. But the studio still commisioned super romantic, explicitly so, ops and eds exclusively for the two of them. To attract a certain subset of audience and it did get traction because it was already established in the story and appealed to audiences it was targeted at. The studio was aware of how it looked to audience. But it's not the kind of genre where you can write it explicitly in the actual story.

As for Kishimoto being misogynistic, yes he is. But that still has nothing to do with Naruto and Sasuke's purposeful love. Is it possible to create homosexual media without or with minimal female interaction with the male leads? Absolutely. 'Hawaii' by Marco Berger has close to no female representation in it, but it's about two gay men realizing their love for each other. Same goes for 'Tropical Malady' by Apichatpong Weerasethakul. 'Happy together' by Wong Kar Wai. Minimal, completely absent or entirely irrelevant female representation. Does that invalidate their own story? No. Obviously.

The reason why I think you are homophobic is because when you trivialize, and appropriate gay content in the name of heteronomativity, you are being homophobic, whether you think of it as such or not. It's like saying - Oh I don't care if you are gay, just keep it away from me.

Your understanding of homophobia is quite shallow, I must say. Kishi's intent is so clear, that you really don't have to be a cinephile to get it. There are many other fans who got it in their first read or watch, just through an unbiased and unprejudiced stance. You don't even have to be exceptionally smart. You just have to avail yourself to the story, to let it immerse you, without coloured and unobjective lenses. Which is honestly the only right way to watch or read anything. Homophobia is such an ingrained mentality, quite like misogyny, that it shows in what you say and how you react to certain things, and it doesn't have to be overt. Almost all the - they are just friends, or they are brothers, or it is just accidental arguments clearly stem from heteronomativity and homophobia because it is such an ingrained response, that one isn't even aware sometimes that they are doing it. People often lack insight into themselves and the majority of Naruto fandom is emotionally young or belong to an age group that is inexperienced in both life and consuming media. Sometimes I suspect most of them haven't seen anything outside of Shounen or shoujo or anime.

And I will tell you something else. People who are in my film circles, I made a couple of them watch Naruto. I didn't say anything about it being gay or whatever, I said nothing. They also understand visual language and narrative like I do. And like I had suspected, they also came out knowing it was a gay love story. Coincidence?? I don't think so. You just gotta be honest with yourself, it's just so much more relieving. Why carry the burden of lying to ourselves? It's not worth it. You and Camilo first met at his gift ceremony, and ever since then one of you would trail behind the other all day. You grew up together which by time made you fall for him knowing how sweet, gentle and caring he is, but what you never expected is for him to feel the same. You being a guy always made you think that Camilo would never feel the same way towards you, but to your surprise he was the one to confess his feelings to you and you gladly returned them.

Since you two were always shoulder to shoulder before you started dating no one really suspected anything, but of course you couldn't hide anything from Dolores who ended up telling her mother who told her Husband, and that made you scared. What if they didn't accept it? What if they didn't support Camilo? What if that would ruin his relationship with his family? And you knew how important his family was to him.

those thoughts worried you and you were always more careful around his family not to show any hint of your relation ship until you told Camilo how you felt, but he comforted you saying that the only thing his madre scolded him for was not telling her sooner. That made you ease up a bit, the thoughts fading away as you met his parents and seeing Pepa worry that Camilo wasn't treating you right, but that still didn't let you rest.

You knew how Camilo's reputation was, he was a Madrigal and you knew he had to live up to the name and you knew he had to get married at some point and expand the family, but he would always refuse to listen when you bring it up, saying that if he can't have you then he won't have anyone else and today wasn't any different.

You two were cuddling in Camilo's room after he locked the door so no one would walk in on you, or so he thought. A while after you two started cuddling you heard a knock on the door, still thinking it was locked he just responded with a 'who is it' but then the door opened to reveal his Abuela. The two of you just stared at her while she took in what was happening. "Camilo what are you doing??!" she shouted almost dropping the flower pot in her hand, Camilo then got off the bed and started walking towards her "Abuela wait, I can explain-" but she just stepped backwards as he got closer "Camilo why were you so close to a guy like that? What were you doing?!" she continued to yell making a crowd around Camilo's door "Mami why are you yelling?" Bruno came in view as Camilo started to get really nervous, this wasn't how he wanted his family to know about your relationship.

They all started arguing with both of you in the middle of it, you just yanked your hand from Camilo's and ran out of the house, you didn't want to be there anymore you just wanted to be alone, so you ran until you were out of the small town and into the woods.

Meanwhile Camilo was about to start running behind you when his Abuela stood in the way, he tried to talk with her, to allow him to go after you but she didn't move saying that he shouldn't care where you went which irritated him, he loved his family yes but he wasn't going to stand by and just listen to his Abuela talking crap about you. He just pushed by her and started running not paying attention to his Abuela yelling at him to come back but he didn't care he just wanted to find you, make sure you're ok.

He ran all around the town not finding any track of you, he then remembered a place you told him about that you go to when you're stressed, so he ran into the woods hoping to find you soon. He reached a small lake and started looking around, he found you hiding behind a tree a few feet away from the lake "Y/N!!" His voice made you jump but you didn't have time to look at him, you found your face buried into his chest as she hugged you tightly. "Mi amor I'm so sorry about what happened, I didn't know my Abuela would react like that-" You cut him off with a quick peck onto his lips "I's ok Milo, It wasn't your fault" you made him sit down beside you as you rested your head on his shoulder "I know but still, She made you cry and you know how much I hate seeing you cry" Camilo wrapped his arms around you and leaned his head on top of yours, you two sat like that in silence for a few more minuets until you spoke up again "What are we going to do now?" I'm not fond of the pairing but from what I've seen General public actually loves Sylki very much. Even the trade reviews called the relationship "genius" which,,,ok. Someone did a poll on various platforms, yt, reddit, fb, twitter etc comparing which ship is better (Lokius or Sylki) and it was Sylki who won by large margin in the end. I suppose mostly they just don't care because it's sci fi and a pairing in a totally unrealistic show, and after Wandavision I guess weird ships are 'in' but yeah it makes you think. But the writers already said they won't give in to the fan pressure bc they have their own story to tell (which ok, valid, you do you) but idk. I guess we will get even more Sylki in second season. Tom already said Loki won't stop searching for her

Just as a disclaimer (bc I don’t want people coming for me): I think lokius is really cute, and I love fics/art/headcanons about them, but I never thought they were canonically romantically interested in each other. I never thought lokius was gonna be canon, and I never wanted it to (because I didn’t want ANY romance in the series), so I don’t even include it in my argument against s*lki.

The viewing public, in general, tends to heavily skew towards heterosexual-presenting ships. Partially because a portion of the general audiences are homophobic, and partially because a lot of non-tumblr fans are so sick of hearing tumblr stans go on and on and on about how they were queerbaited by certain gay ships not becoming canon, when in reality, said ships are trash.

Listen. I sympathise with that. I get that. I know I’m beating a hornet’s nest with this, but…. D*stiel? J*hnlock? St*cky? None of those were written in any way to invoke queer undertones, they were always supposed to be platonic, and tbfh even as platonic relationships the first two are literally toxic and abusive as hell, anyway.

So I definitely understand how a casual straight fan on Twitter or Instagram would see some of those same crazy “we were queerbaited” tumblr stans ranting about lokius not becoming canon and how much s*lki sucks and……. it makes sense that they’d be like “These people are just pissed that their gay ship isn’t canon, that’s why they hate s*lki.”

But here’s the thing. I don’t think those people realise how callous it is to say something like that when the only reason queer kids are so quick to ship any two male characters who express a modicum of affection for one another, is that they’re so fucking starved for representation in the first place, they’re willing to see queer romance in any same-sex interaction. They’re just that desperate. That’s where the whole crazy gay stan thing comes from. And yeah, it’s annoying that these people put their whole chest into defending gay ships that are total trash, but you have to realise why they do it.

So, what I’m saying is, for s*lki shippers- who are already winning, because their straight ship had the privilege of easily becoming canon despite all its flaws- to look at queer people who are frustrated to the point of tears that they were once again conned out of any form of queer rep (for the mcu’s first canon queer character, for gods sake) after actually genuinely being queerbaited this time (with his bisexuality/genderfluidity)….. and to essentially gloat that their straight ship became canon and taunt queer people by saying “oh you’re just desperate for two men to kiss”………… idk, man. It just seems real cold to me. Reeks of straight privilege and heteronormativity.

Ok, so with that being said.. let me respond to your actual ask lol.

I’m not surprised at all that s*lki won the popularity polls. I think a large reason for that is the fact that it was pitted against lokius, which sorta rubs a lot of casual viewers the wrong way for reasons listed above. I’m also not surprised that casual viewers liked it outside of its opposition to lokius- because, um, casual viewers aren’t very smart.

They tend to analyse exactly nothing, they don’t look any deeper than the surface, and if the writers of a show stick a hot man and woman together under a blanket, they eat it up. Because the narrative tells them it’s sweet. Just like the narrative tells them Loki is a greasy asshole who had no character development up until this point, and they eat that up too. Just like the narrative tells them that sylvie’s the best thing since sliced bread, and they eat that up too. Just like the narrative tells them it’s completely in character for Loki to try to subjugate a group of 3 random Mongolians in the middle of the dessert for absolutely no reason other than his “narcissism”, and they eat that up too. Just like the narrative tells them that one throwaway line about liking “a bit of both” is somehow this groundbreaking example of lgbt representation, and they eat that up too……… See the pattern here?

And as far as being concerned about the pseudo-incest angle, I don’t even think casual fans even dug that deep. They literally just saw two main characters- a pretty white woman and a hot white man- doing cool fight scenes together and giving each other goo goo eyes, and they were automatically sold.

And the writers saying “we won’t give in to fan pressure, we have our own story to tell” is honestly complete bullshit. What the hell is the POINT of working for a corporate film company and telling a story on screen if not to please the fans??? They do what they do to get people to watch their shows to get lots of money. That’s literally what they’re there for. Mike Waldron must have a pretty damn inflated sense of self importance if he thinks his own “artistic vision” or what the hell ever is the priority here lmao.

And I wanna be mad about Season 2, I really do. But at this point Season 1 ruined the character so much for me that I legitimately don’t even care what direction they take him in.

Nah, it is. Like, it's a huge problem. The homophobia in the fandom is pronounced. And as is often the case with homophobia, a lot of it comes from ignorance--the ignorance of privilege, right?

Like, how could Benedict (or Eloise, or anyone else) possibly get a happy ending as a gay person in the Regency? Never mind that people most definitely did have happy, sustained relationships as queer people during that time period. The idea that a character being gay precludes them from having an HEA is.... homophobic, obviously, but it ignores both historical reality and the reality that Bridgerton is a fantasy. It has a made up world in which historically marginalized people get to live without marginalization--or at least, without it to the same extent that they did in actuality. It's troubling in general that the show was like "POST-RACIAL PARADISE" but still felt? The need? To include homophobia?

Never mind, too, that historical romance as a subgenre is moving more and more towards embracing its status as a fantasy world and is slowly but surely becoming more inclusive. If authors like Olivia Waite can publish The Lady's Guide to Celestial Mechanics, if Cat Sebastien can publish Unmasking The Marquess, why can't Bridgerton genderflip a relationship and make it queer?

I mean, I think the other thing that people have a problem with is the frank reality that a character they're attracted to being genderflipped or being rendered as queer in the show would destroy their own heteronormative projections. People don't always project onto ships, but they do often. In the case of Benedict and Sophie, because Sophie is such a generalized character, I think she's kind of ideal for projection? So if you want to fuck Benedict and you're a woman, it compromises your fantasy if Benedict gets with a man. And if you want to fuck Sir Philip and he's turned into Lady Pippa, your fantasy is similarly compromised.

The thing is that it's like running into a brick wall when you level these critiques. Because nobody in the fandom wants to discuss the show critically--you're ruining their fun if you do. (Though they could just not engage with critique.). And they're so defensive and up in arms about critique that they howl over being accused of homophobia, rather than looking inward and saying.... maybe... I am being.... homophobic...

And I say this from experience. I was raised in a very conservative household, which has since become quite liberal after trimming some fat. When I joined Tumblr genderbending was already a thing, and I was an ignorant teen who thought myself open-minded; but when I saw my hetero ships genderbent it made me uncomfortable. Until one day I was like.... why does this make me uncomfortable? I looked inward. I did some work. And I'm not patting myself on the back for it--I think everyone just.... needs to do that in general.

Let's be real, Bridgerton probably won't genderbend, and it will remain behind the times for that. But let's not pretend that the outrage over the very idea of genderbending isn't laced with homophobia.

Anyway, the show is groundbreaking just for being a historical romance adaptation and for being as diverse as it is, albeit with some issues. But the fandom?

There's a lot more to romance as a genre (and historical romance as a subgenre) than mindless fun, and self-reflection and critique is a part of making it better. Bridgerton is a part of that. I don't know if it's going to go as far as it could (I doubt) but there are places that it could go which would be genuinely fantastic and reflective of places where historical romance must go in order to remain relevant as a whole.

As far as canon ships go? Romione, honestly. I don't hate it I just don't see the appeal, personally. I don't think they're actually the best fit for each other, romantically speaking, but I won't like... refuse to read a fic over that or something. I just keep putting them both in other pairings when I write HP fics LOL

Marauder x marauder ships. I'm at a point now where I'll read wolfstar if the premise of the fic outside the ship is REALLY appealing to me but I genuinely have always hated Marauder x Marauder ships of any combo, since the very beginning. I just really value relationships with a deep level of love that isn't romantic, and I think adding romance between any of them cheapens it, IMO. The number of times I've been called homophobic for this opinion is absolutely staggering considering that I aM GAY askdfjgnkfl

It's not as cringey as ppl make it out to be now??? Like, not in the JKR sense — there's some deeply rooted ethical issues in the way some of her political thinking seeped into the fine print of the world she made, but like the story itself... idk I just see a lot of "ugh just grow up" attitudes about it now and it's silly to me. For all its flaws, HP explored a lot of deep themes and introduced that to a lot of kids. I was one of those kids from a very broken home who got to see themselves in Harry and grow up with him and, WOW THIS GOT TOO DEEP ANYWAY what I'm saying is it's not just a silly kid's story and it's not as simple as "find another book to read" like so many people say now. The world is so vast and Hogwarts really did become HOME at such a young age for a lot of people, and walking away from the emotional investment in that is a lot less simple than ppl want to act.

The movies got a few (minor) things better than the books. Idk why the wardrobe always comes to mind first but sometimes I'm writing fic and I realize that the "students wearing muggle clothing outside of class/formal events" originated with the movies and not the books and I just cannot lmfao I refuse to accept the robes 24/7 give these children some COMFORT and INDIVIDUALITY can u tell i was not sent to a school with a uniform?? i think u can tell

I ship stevebucky, i ship evanstan, the problem with tfatws is that many shippers have said (I've read it here too) that they won't watch tfatws because how's possible that bucky moves on without Steve? How's possible that they did Steve dirty in endgame? How's possible that people are shipping bucky with Sam? Guys, this is the only serie with a black man as a lead and if you actually see the team behind the scenes, you'll notice, this show is + 1/

the most inclusive one in that topic, tfatws goes beyond a white ship which, unfortunately, was never canon, Sam-Mackie being the lead, his name being first is way more important than what our -bitter- feelings are towards something that was never going to happen and I need you to understand that. Hi love! I’m very sorry it’s taken me so long to reply to this ask, but to be honest, for a while there I wasn’t sure I should. Because while I know your intentions are good, anon, I’m a little worried that this might start some sort of shit storm again, which I am just not here for. But having thought about it, I do think your remarks warrant a reply, so I’ll try to reply as best I can and hope we can leave it at that. I’ll put the rest of the reply under the cut or this post will get too long.

First of all, I’m glad to hear you ship Stucky and Evanstan and I appreciate everything you’re saying here and the way you’re saying it too – not as an attack, but to try and open people’s eyes to something you feel is important (and which is, to a certain extent, undeniably important). I do see where you’re coming from and feel like you make several good points. But I still disagree with you on a number of points as well, the main one being that we should be able to change the way we feel about something because there is a rational argument for why it would be best if we did. If humans worked like that, the world would have a whole lot less problems, I think! Unfortunately, emotions aren’t rational. So if I, or anyone else, regardless of background or skin colour, has a negative emotional response to Endgame or to the prospect of seeing Bucky move on from Steve in TFATWS, that is not something we’re able to just shut off or change, like you suggest.

Now, we can and should definitely do our best to support the aspects of the show that are undeniably positive, such as the issue of representation you mention! (I assume when you say it’s the ‘only serie with a black man as a lead’ you mean within Disney+, because there are definitely other shows outside of Disney+ with POC in the lead, if not nearly as many as there should be). I am 100% supportive of Anthony Mackie taking over the shield, and my issue with this show is not in any way related to him. I know that isn’t what you’re saying either, but I just want to make that clear. I’m also very happy with the fact that the show has a female director, and I truly hope she and her team do a good job and aren’t just an extension of the team behind Endgame. None of that, however, can make me be not-sad or not-angry about the fate of this ship that has such a strong hold on my heart and which will inevitably be explored to some extent in TFATWS. I wish it could do that, but that’s just not how it works for me, unfortunately, and I know there are many others for who that’s true as well.

I’m not entirely sure what you mean when you say “we need to do better as a fandom and try to understand our feelings towards the falcon and the winter soldier.” As I see it, the negative feelings many of have towards the show are (among other things) very clearly based on the fact that the show is a direct continuation of the story line posited by Endgame, and the fact that Endgame completely ruined the characterisation and arcs of our favourite characters and actively tried to destroy the ship we care about so much. (Incidentally, I don’t think their skin colour is relevant in this particular case, nor is the question of whether they were or were ever going to be canon. Sure, there are canon ships too, but big part of shipping is and always will be the notion of recognizing the potential of two characters’ romantic chemistry and exploring how that might have worked out if the creators of those characters hadn’t, for whatever reason, decided not to do that themselves).

The way I see it, Endgame was the result of too many misogynistic, lazy and homophobic (etc.) decisions for us to just forgive and forget the whole thing and uncritically support anything they put out hereafter, even if they’ve made some positive, laudable decisions following the shit show that is Endgame. The truth is, Marvel and Disney+ have not provided us with a lot of cause to have faith in them of late, and as such, many of us are apprehensive about the Disney+ shows, including TFATWS. So our negative feelings towards it are not just caused by how we feel about this one ship – even though I think that in itself should be enough to not want to watch the show – but go beyond that.

Of course, I’m not going to proactively boycott the show, and I will support it if I think it’s good and it deserves our support, absolutely! But I can’t just suddenly make myself be happy and excited about this show because there’s a rational argument for why I maybe should. So I’m willing to give it a chance, but I can’t make any promises as to what my feelings toward it will be, and I don’t think anyone can, at this point. Having said all that, let me say again that I do truly appreciate your arguments and your attitude and I am not saying you’re entirely wrong, I just wanted to explain why for me personally what you propose I should do just isn’t feasible, unfortunately.
