the beginning of a servant of two masters would’ve been such a good moment for a magic reveal. arthur is fighting a bunch of enemies on his own and merlin is injured. more bad guys are running towards arthur
so merlin uses some magic to put a barrier between arthur and the enemies (and himself)
but arthur is looking merlin’s way and he sees and hears merlin use magic. and arthur’s been taught his entire life that sorcerers are all evil but merlin is using his magic to save arthur even if it means merlin himself will likely die.
then for a good half of the episode, merlin is gone and arthur has men looking everywhere for him. he hasn’t told anyone that merlin has magic of course, but he knows and he knows if merlin was to be found he’d probably have to be arrested but he saved arthur’s life so clearly he wasn’t evil. all that matters to arthur is finding merlin.
but then when he does find merlin, it’s the brainwashed merlin that’s actively trying to kill him.
