I think the funniest thing that the Ramban ever said is roughly translated to: āThese are the words of our Rabbi Hananel. And they are stupid words.ā
(Could also be translated to: āAnd his words are wrong.ā Still hysterical.)

Hello. I watched the show the haunting of hill house on Netflix recently. And I am really impressed with Oliver Jackson-cohen and then I remember he was a popular fancast for moonknight. he lowkey looks like Smallwood's MK and he's a great actor and he's Jewish. What are your thoughts on him as Moon knight?do you think he can do better than Oscar Isaac? Most of comic mk fans who doesn't like the mk show prefers him than Oscar isaac.
So I have not watched Haunting of Hill House and know nothing of Oliver Jackson-Cohen except what I just looked up. He looks alright. I'm sure he's amazing.
When they announced Oscar Isaac, I was skeptical because I only knew him from Star Wars as Poe, which I enjoyed very much, but I didn't know the man's range.
I've mentioned many times that I am always skeptical of any Moon Knight media until I can take it in for myself (Marvel has hurt me far too many times).
I think for the story they told, Oscar did an outstanding job and his need to do his own research and advocate for certain groups was amazing.
I amā¦ Mildly... miffed that Marvel has put Oscar in other roles. (Don't get me wrong. I adore him as Spider-man 2099 Miguel. And he was in that role first before he was Moon Knight). What annoys me about it is that the re-use of an actor is taking away from someone else of that culture to get exposure, work, and representation.
Oscar Isaac is of mixed Latino descent and fits the Latino Miguel role nicely. He can use his accent and his Spanish! Full love!
Now, here's the problem. Was Marvel going to cast someone Jewish to play Moon Knight?
Did they cast someone Jewish to play Magneto? What about Billy Maximoff?
What about upcoming Ben Grimm? Arguably THE most Jewish Marvel character they have?
Ebon Moss-Bachrach is an American Jewish actor from New York (I am not going to get into any patrial lineal arguments). Baruch Hashem! It can be done!
They gave a Jewish role to a Jewish actor. THE most Jewish character they have (I'm not going to argue about Magneto here but I feel like Ben Grimm and Magneto are their own different sides to the same coin. ask me more about that later).
I feel like Marvel bit off a lot of attempted representation with Moon Knight and jumped in half cocked.
Grief stricken, Traumatized, PTSD former soldier, D.I.D,, Jewish, Avatar to an Egyptian Moon God, Autistic, anger management problemā¦ I'm sure I'm missing a fewā¦
If they gave this role to a Jewish Actor, it would have been purely by accident.
Moon Knight was SO underrated in the Marvel universe I just about had a heart attack when they said they were going to give him a live action series!
So now they had to take a VERY unknown character who has a history of being seen as "The Crazy face ripping off Egptian God Worshiping guy" and make people want to watch the show. People who probably didn't even read the comics as well as die hard comic fans.
How do you do that? You give them a well known and well liked Actor who will draw people in just to see that actor.
And it worked.
The number of people that started watching the show who had never done ANYTHING Marvel before SPIKED thanks to Oscar. It was a VERY smart play.
What I am VERY happy they didn't do? Cast some white guy.
Oscar Isaac's casting opened up the possibility of Sephardic Moon Knight. Comic Moon Knight is VERY Ashkenazi jewish Orthodox. Up until this point, there were people who had no idea that there were other types of Jews! Hispanic Jews? Whhhhaaaaat?!
I think that is an amazing conversation to have! And man I wish they had explored THAT prospect! Make my Moon Knight Sephardic! Heck yeah! See my boys getting down to Ladino music! A little Salsa in the club and a little gefilte fish veracruzana on Friday night!
So, yes... we could have had more comic accurate Moon Knight... But is it more important to get a guy that looks like the character or someone that can play the character and open new doors?
I would love to see Ladino Jake. The sass. The attitude. The swears.
But back to the original question: Moon Knight played by an actual Jewish Actor. I'd love to see it. Again, I don't know anything about Oliver, but I'm not a comic purist and don't need the characters to LOOK like the characters. As long as they can show up and make me believe they are the character, I'm happy.
Did you know they invented Marvel Ultimate because of Sam Jackson? White Nick Fury was so ingrained and popular in 616 that when Sam Jackson got the role, and was GOOD at it, they immediately went "How do we marry the comics with MCU so we can have Sam Jackson comics without going "Ignore all that white guy stuff"?!? And now we have Marvel Ultimate Universe.
I plan to watch the Haunting series someday (I started the other one but had to stop because life happened and I never got back to it), so maybe I'll be sad they didn't cast Oliver. But I'm not sure his role would have fit in with the style of what the show was trying to do. Maybe if they had put out a Moon Knight movie, it would have needed a different guy.
#ask away#Talk to me about Moon Knight#I have a lot of opinions on Sephardic Moon Knight now that I didn't know I needed before#We do need more Jewish rolls being put in Jewish hands#I wish I could ask Oscar if the repeated rolls he gets as Jewish Characters has let him look into his own family Jewish heritage#I wonder how he feels about it now#He did the roll very respectfully#There will always be unhappy fans#Thank you for the ask it made me look into the new Fantastic Four and now I am curious#If they don't give us Yiddish Ben Grimm I'll riot

What is the antisemitism in TUC season 1? Does it have to do with Wally the golem?/gen
[ID: an ask from an anonymous tumblr user that reads "would love to hear more about the antisemitism in unsleeping city! was a while ago that i watched it and can't remember what you might be referencing but definitely want to be aware of it.]
no, it's not about willy the golem -- i actually think willy is a great addition to the season (even if i wish we got to see more of him), and an indication to me that brennan/the showrunners were definitely trying to be sincere and inclusive. i want to make it clear that i don't think anything antisemitic in tuc is there intentionally; i think it's there out of simple ignorance, which is also why i think fans don't frequently see/comment on it either. but i don't think that's an excuse, either.
my grief with tuc1 is largely centered around its portrayal of robert moses as the villain. especially by making him a greedy, power-hungry lich working en league with bloodsucking vampires. (also his mini is literally a green skinned skull man in a suit. yikes.) here's the thing; i know robert moses was a real life horrible person, who actually was racist and powerhungry etc etc. and i know that robert moses, the real actual person, was jewish. my grief with tuc1 is not that they chose to use robert moses over literally any other person (real or fictional) to be their season villain (though i'd be really curious to know what tuc1 would have looked like with a different villain), but that they chose to take a real jewish person, turn them into an antisemitic caricature, and then only barely add other portrayals of judaism to balance that out.
like, tuc isn't completely devoid of other jewish representation. as you mention, there's willy the golem -- and again, i really like willy, and i love that it's a portrayal of a golem that's faithful to jewish folklore (ie as a benevolent, guardian construct rather than a mindless destructive monster. i am not a fan of how 'golem' is so frequently misused as a generic enemy creature in other fantasy and ttrpg spaces, including other seasons of d20). but as i said earlier, i wish we see more of him in the season, because he's not around very much, and feels a little more like worldbuilding than a full character to me. also, he's not human. jews are people.
the only other human jewish character in tuc1 is...stephen sondheim. which, again, yeah, that's a real person who really was jewish. but i really wouldn't blame you if you had no idea of that when watching tuc1. maybe from the name you could guess he might be jewish, but i don't think people ought to make a habit of trying to 'clock' someone being jewish by having a 'jewish-sounding' surname. as he's portrayed in tuc1, you'd never know he's jewish, unless you happen to already be pretty knowledgeable about the man in real life. it's far more likely you'll know him as a theater legend than anything else (may his memory be a blessing).
now i'm not saying that brennan or the showrunners should have played up the jewishness of Real Person Stephen Sondheim to counterbalance the depiction of robert moses; that just feels weird to me, especially considering that sondheim was literally alive when tuc1 was filmed and released. it's a tricky thing to portray real people in fiction alongside made up characters, especially when they are contemporaries, and i don't think 'outright caricature' is the way to go about that. nor do i think that moses' jewishness should have been played up at all, because again i don't think that would have been particularly true to the person/character, and also Fucking Yikes. but, c'mon, if you hear the names 'moses' and 'sondheim' next to each other, which one do you associate more with judaism?
and as it stands, these are the only representations of judaism in tuc1. one admittedly nice but very minor nonhuman character; one human character you'd never be able to tell was jewish; and a third human character who, while never explicitly referenced as jewish, plays into some really hurtful antisemitic stereotyping. and it was a choice to not include anything else. maybe not a deliberate one, probably more likely one made out of simple ignorance than anything else, but a choice nonetheless. in a city with one of the largest and most visibly jewish populations in the country, and a culture that is inextricably influenced by that jewish population. a jewish population which has been and continues the target of rising hate crimes for years. i know that nyc means different things to different people, and everyone's nyc is their own -- but my nyc is jewish, and it sucks that that its jewishness is referenced directly in only one very minor way, which is greatly overshadowed by its, in my view, really insidious indirect references.
i don't know exactly how to go about addressing this. obviously, the show can't be changed by now. even if it could, i think the final product would be very significantly different from what it is now if the villain was something/someone else. i think including more references to jews in new york, more (human) jewish characters, hell, even mentioning hanukkah celebrations and menorahs in windows (it takes place in late december, after all; depending on the year it's not at all out of place for hanukkah to coincide with xmas!) would help. having literally any more positive jewish representation in tuc1 would, i think, help balance the bad stuff that's there. because, yeah, robert moses was real and he was terrible and he was jewish. but he's one jewish guy in a city with over a million jews, the vast majority of whom are just normal people. i don't want him to be the only vision of us that people get, in tuc1 alone or in any media. i'm not saying that jews can't or shouldn't be villains in fiction; but especially if you are a goyische creator, you should be really careful in how you're portraying us, and if there are other contrasting depictions in your work, too, in order to not (even accidentally) demonize jewish people as a whole.
#sasha answers#anon#unsleeping city#the unsleeping city#long post#sorry for not putting this under a read more but i think people ought to see this. or at least#if two people felt the need to ask me about it then at least they would want to see the full thing uncovered#also fwiw i do think that they tried to address this to some extent when they made tuc2#with more scenes with willy (and incorporating more golem folklore with the animating word in his mouth -- nice touch!)#the jewish immigrant family in the photo flashback encounter (even if the hanukkiah in the picture isn't exactly kosher lol)#and ESPECIALLY rabbi mike. i ADORE rabbi mike. i think he's a WONDERFUL addition#i do still wish he was a more important/prominent character. cause again he isn't in it all that much.#(and he's still like. the only new jewish human character in the campaign.)#but i recognize what he represents and i am happy about it#i do think brennan & the d20 crew tried to improve after tuc1. i do. i see their efforts and i applaud them for it#but still to my knowledge they haven't ever directly addressed the errors made in season 1#and it's extremely rare that i even see other fans mention it#and like. sorry but i am tired. i am. we deserve better. we deserve portrayals in media that show us as People#not just as evil monsters#anyway you're welcome to rb this but be cool in the notes esp if you're a goy#other jews are welcome to (respectfully) disagree with me if they want#also if you so much as mention the word israel on this post you're getting blocked end of

Honestly if you don't understand why discussing how quickly the Holocaust happened is relevant to what made it different from other various other genocides prior to that, then idk how to make it seem relevant. It's like...deeply important to understanding the scale and specifics of the Holocaust and what the impact of that was. I don't think it's helpful to assume continual worst case reasons for why someone is not fully on board with a Holocaust comparison either but whatever.
#israelis make a shitty comparison and use it to justify horrific shit!! yeah they sure do. i wish they wouldnt....#maybe no one should make bad holocaust comparisons!#i also shouldve gotten in to edward said's weird thing about palestinians being the Jews of the Jews#and his fun claims he was the last true jewish intellectual despite not being jewish at all lol#the replacement and removal of jews from jewish narratives is weird

ok ive had enough of queering judaism. can we start judaizing queerness now. or something
#like. it feels like so much of this queering judaism shtus just layers an american/secular queer identity over judaism#which i guess is fine for certain communities. but it's only going to push you away from orthodoxy#and if as queer jews we already feel like our queerness makes us into secularized outsiders in our own communities#how does this help? is trying to get our communities to embrace an essentially secular american iteration of queer identity supposed to mak#us feel LESS like outsiders? it's not quite doing it for me#we need a queerness that comes from within judaism that is essentially jewish#ive seen a couple of articles recently from ppl talking abt how word/concept of butch doesnt exist in their language & culture#but they use it anyway#& like. i love being butch. it's important to me ill never give it up#& i am american too. but my whole identity as a butch he/him lesbian is exclusively secular american it came from the outsifr#which is definitely due in large part to the fact that my Gender Problems were really tied up w orthodox jewish gender roles#so naturally to get out of that i'd pull on something not jewish. but i wish there was another option? idk if that's possible#or how it would look#maybe that's why im obsessed w the idea of a butch w long curly payos.... š¦#i forgot where i was going w this but yeah it's frustrating#this is a large part of why im wary of starting a queer Jewish club on campus bc the people who would wanna start it w mr#well no offense but they are insufferable about this#(incidentally they're also insufferable about chanukah. no surprises there)#op#jew blogging#others have Actually written abt all this tho

Dick should be Romani. Jason should be Hispanic. Damian is half-Arab. I don't know where we fall on Tim, I guess he can be the only white boy in the Robins. /shrug
Tim's upper crust New Jersey rich class, he is white as hospital wall paint. Dick just is Romani, that's straight up canon at this point, I don't know whether they've made it so both of his parents were Romani but I know that at least John Grayson has been Romani for some time in canon, which would make Dick at least half. Damian's a bit harder to pin down because DC has flip-flopped a lot on exactly what the al Ghul heritage is, Ra's I believe is half Chinese and half Arab (where exactly? who the Hell knows apparently the entire Arab world is a monolith for this people) and Talia has that and I think her mom was Arabic so Damian is at least half-Arab with some Chinese ancestry and is, in fact, brown, just like his mom and his grandpa (those ugly-ass movies that made him painfully white are the Devil's work). Jason at least needs to be ethnically ambiguous enough that he was able to wholeheartedly believe that the top three candidates for his biological mom are a Middle-Eastern woman, an East Asian woman of mixed Chinese and Japanese descent, or a blond haired blue eyed white woman. I tend to go for biracial Hispanic because I myself am the child of one white parent and one Latin parent and I like projecting, but I've seen a lot of good stuff with Jason as East-Asian or Afro-Latino that I really enjoy. And Cass is also biracial, since her mom is, again, of Chinese and Japanese descent and I don't know what the fuck David Cain is, and she should be portrayed as such as well.
And if DC could just remember all of this and stop portraying them as just Bruce clones physically that would be swell.
#personal#answered#anonymous#batfam#'oh but some of them have blue eyes' yeah cuz sometimes when you mix genetics weird shit happens#i have my peruvian side's hair and eye coloring because both my hair and eyes are very dark#but EVERYTHING else i got from my dad's greek side (and he's not even full blood greek he's half on his mom's side) i am startlingly pale#some of y'all did not pay attention eighth grade/freshman biology but i did because i'm smart#anyway i really wish people in editorial would remember that the batfam has a wide variety of cultures and disparate upbringings#it just makes it so much more interesting#hell even the way religion has shaken out can be fun to play with#bruce is jewish jason has been hinted to be catholic (and i endorse it wholeheartedly because again projection)#tim is at most agnostic (honestly tim is just a WASP which tracks because tim okay i'm done) christian-adjacent#and damian absolutely should be muslim or at least multi-faith but that again requires dc to remember that damian is brown#which they so often don't

I knew twitter was a cesspool, but my god. I thought at least tumblr had the reading comprehension from all the fanfic.
Like stop acting as if four months ago yāall werenāt up Noahās ass and fawning all over him. Now he said something you donāt like, and are participating in the mass psychosis against Jews and Israel and despise him. Itās pathetic. If the last month has taught us anything, itās that we know who wouldāve sided with the Nazis.
#noah schnapp#good fucking god he was your blorbo for the past year#stop acting like yāall hated him from the beginning just bc thatās the issue of the month#you can dislike what he said sure#but when you hate on him for being gay and Jewish thatās where we have the problem#at least ppl are wishing his character dead instead of him I guess#what a low bar

some silly little thoughts i have on monster :
big fan of how so many characters in monster have a big nose like that's peak character design, that's exactly how i draw people š«”. and every character, even ones with one line of dialogue have a different nose, i love this !! i think my favorite noses, on the top of my head right now, are runge's and karl's.
i'm also a big fan of how many middle aged/old men there is, as a fictional dilh (dad i'd like to have) lover. (this one is about only like five characters because the rest are kinda bad people etc.)
there was only supposed to have these two thoughts but i decided to ad two more :
i love the french detective hired by mĆ¼ller, he deserved better. also if there ever is an adaptation of monster, my theater teacher, who's an actor too, should play him i think š¤ (he's french and kinda looks like the character and i love him so).
since i'm on the topic of an adaptation of monster with real actors, i don't want one UNLESS it's with exclusively with german-speaking actors. like i want it to be a fully european production all in german (with characters speaking czech, english, turkish, french etc when needed, obviously). i put my trust in arte if there was someone to produce this because they have banger german shows š«”. also i want the actors in this scenario to mostly not be very famous, just to be good and have the same vibe as much as possible as the characters. although i'm not against more famous people being in it, they should have little roles imo (like if an actor like idk david suchet plays the old english husband or katrin sass plays a random nurse, i don't mind yk)
#urasawa did it for the north african jewish girls (me) who love drawing big noses (kinda wish more women had one tho)#also 2nd point is about leichwein/reichwein and rosso mainly#kinda tenma and grimmer and runge/lunge too but the first two aren't THAT old#and even though i love my man heinrich he's not a dad (but he kinda reminds me of my dad who's so absent he left the country but you know)#3e point David mv jtm je vais faire de toi une star#4th point i'm invested in this hypothetical german adaptation (it will never happen) (if they did make a live action i'd be with am*r*c*ns)#naoki urasawa's monster#monster#sophia talks
