#i will say the space marines we got in a box that came with base necrons have been fun to torment just bc theyre bulkier so we arent afraid

Humans are Space Orcs, “Reunited.”
Just tying up some loose ends, also see the post I made right before this about a stupid story that happened to me while writing this. It is kind of funny :)
The day was hot, very hot, and the sun beat down on fort harmony with merciless intent. Over the tarmac, the sweltering heat caused little mirrages, as puddles of water to appear and then vanish down the runway.
The heat was oppressive enough that no birds sang, and even the roaring of the engines had been dulled by a day that none of the en were willing to venture out of the air cooled airplane hangers.
Only one figure remained outside staring up at the blue sky and the oppressive sun beaming down upon her.
Waffles limped over the hot pavement, the tarmac burning the delicate pads of her feet, but if she stopped walking it would only hurt even more.
Her tail drooped towards the ground,
It was so hot.
She made it across the tarmac and down to the little shaded area where someone had set up a discarded cardboard box and a bowl of water.
Her feet continued to ache, and she licked at them with her long, pink, tongue though that only brought momentary relief from the burns.
Across the tarmac two men watched her form the open hanger door. It wasn’t that they hadn’t tried to get her to come inside, they had, it was just that she wouldn't, and no amount of cajoling or bribing her had worked. THey felt bad of course, but there was nothing much else they could do.
One of the men felt bad enough to brave the heat and bring over a bag of ice which he pressed onto her paws for a time before having to return to his work.
Waffles laid her head down and closed her eyes ears drooping.
So hot
Overhead an engine sounded. It was a familiar noise by now,and only one of her eyes cracked open to watch the shuttle descend from the sky and come to land on the scouring earth. She closed her eyes again, listening to the distant sounds as the shuttle doors open, and human voices swelled up around her.
It was then that she was hit with the smell.
IThe heat washed over her face and straight up into her nose with a smell she had been waiting for for months now.
She shot to her feet ears up nose lifted.
Her tail began to wag
And despite the heat of the burning tarmac, she raced across the open space yipping and barking and whining for all she was worth
***
Adam stepped out of the shuttle into a sheer wall of heat. It was like being punched in the face by the sun. The borrowed flight suit he now wore was immediately sweltering and he fanned himself with one hand already beginning to pant.
Behind him Sunny and the other stepped down onto the tarmac.
Sunny Immediately yelped and sprung back into the shuttle
Adam couldn’t help but laugh, but that was when a high pitched whining noise reached his ears. A whining barking, yipping noise that immediately had him turning towards the sound eyes wide.
It started out as a small shape barely distinguishable from the sand and grass to the side of the tarmac, and then, as it raced towards him it coalesced into a furry bullet.
“Watffles!” He shouted, taking a few steps down from the ramp as she raced up, and leaped into the air.
He caught her mid arc staggering back a few steps as she attacked his face was the kind of love that could only be bestowed by man's best friend. She whined and whimpered and her tail wagged and her body wriggled so hard he had a tough time holding onto her.
“Hey pretty girl!”
Wavvles whimpered and barked some more licking his face and the side of his head repeatedly to the point where his hair was damp.
He laughed and held her to his chest, her tail thudding against his side and back.
She didn’t seem very inclined to get down, and the Tarmac was so hot he worried about her paws burning. So instead he held her like a large baby in his arms, and once she was finally done licking his face, she rested her head against his neck and chest nuzzling every now and against at his chin just to remind him she was there.
Not that he could forget an 80 lb German Shepherd.
Behind him the others were laughing and awing.
Ramirez had videoed the whole thing, and continued to video as they made their way across the tarmac and too one of the hangers. Waffles didn’t seem to have any intention of getting down.
Finally they stepped into the hanger, and reluctantly he set her back on the floor, though she insisted on sitting on his feet every time he came to a stop.
Across the room there was a clamouring of voices, and A group of at least five people came charging across the room.
His family hugged him so hard, he thought he was going to crack a rib, and he laughed right along with them as they stammered out nar incoherent sentences.
Eventually his mother pulled back wiping her eyes on hand resting on his cheek the other on his shoulder, “Boy, you need a shave.”
He smiled, “Yeah, can't say there are many razors in a wormhole.”
“I knew it, I knew it. Our baby brother is invincible.” David announced, slapping him on the back so hard he nearly stumbled forward.
Waffles looked up at him her tial thudding against the floor, her tongue lolling form her mouth
“Where were you!”
“Not sure if I am allowed to say just yet, but i'll tell you when I know what I am allowed to say. Let's just start by saying that it wasn’t pleasant, but it’s a great story, ad it involves  miraculous escape planned and executed by yours truly in a fantastic manor.”
HIs mother sighed, “At least you came back wit hall your body parts in tact this time.”
She turned her head to look down and smiled, “Dr. Krill we are so glad you made it back too. We were devastated to hear that you had gone missing as well.”
The doctors saved a polite hand, “No matter.”
She gave him a very light hug anyway, careful to avoid crushing him or something, which he seemed to enjoy despite himself.
Thomas crossed his arms, “Hey, is anyone gonna thank me for bringing him back in one piece?”
Martha sighed and grabbed him up in a hug, “Thank you for bringing yourself home in one piece.” She pulled back, “ How was the war.”
HE grinned, “It was awesome, we mounted a revolution.”
She shook her head, “I can’t take you anywhere because you're either discovering extraterrestrial life or overthrowing corrupt governments.”
Thomas grinned, “Plus I think this has finally made me realize what I want to do with my life.”
Adam smiled as he watched his brother, this was arguably the happiest he had ever seen thomas: who was known for his sullen nature and moodiness. Life hadn’t been easy on him, and he had jumped and bounced from one thing to another in between relapses.
“Oh, and what is that?”
He motioned back to where the rest of the group was standing, “Well I was talking to Ramirez and Maverick and I…. I think joining the marines would be good for me.” He got a slap on the back from their father, who seemed more than pleased with the idea.
Martha assigned, “Of course I should  have seen that coming.” She smile, “I am proud of you. Just try not to overthrown anymore empires while you’re at it.”
He grinned, “No promises.
Adam got hugged a few more times after that seeing as no one was really willing to believe that he was alive.
Even the men he didn’t know from around base stopped by to shake his hand and tell him how glad they were that he was back.
The UNSC sorely missed him.
At some point Krill insisted on doctoring him, and dragged him back into the medical bay where he did all he docterly things, blood pressure temperature pulse. Sunny stood in the corner with both sets of arms crossed over her chest.
He might have asked her to wait in the hall, but he had a feeling that that request wouldn’t go down so well, so he let it go.
Krill examined the three large gashes on his chest and where they had healed over into large, livid puckered red scars.
“Hmm, I could probably fix this. WIth a consultation from a plastic surgeon.” He muttered
Adam waved him off, ‘It’s alright Krill, I think they look kind of badass, sort of a tarzan king of the jungle sort of vibe.”
Krill glowered at him, “Well one of these days you are just going to have to pick ONE vibe, because space cyborg pirate Tarzan is getting to be a bit of a mouthful.”
Adam laughed.
Sunny harumphed glowering angrily at the new scars.
Krill turned to look down at the ones on his upper forearms, which hadn’t scarred up yet, but where still in the process of being scabbed over, “And what are these.”
“Er…. I had to get the attention of the keepers, and that was the only way to do it without them heightening security on me.”
Sunny’s fists clenched even further.
Krill flipped over his hand, which was still raw and red, “Let me guess”
Adam shrugged sheepishly, “Well you know how it is.”
He turned his head to look at Sunny and quickly looked away as her stare bored a hole in his forehead.
At the end of the medical bay, the door slid open and a soldier stepped inside hurrying over to offer him a set of ACUs and a pair of boots, “These should fit sir, the brass will be here in half and hour, and will meet with you in the war room… I… mean the conference room !A.” He turned on his heels and walked out, big boots clomping on the tile as he went.
Adam changed quickly and managed to hunt down a razor in enough time to get a quick shave in before meeting with his superiors. He didn’t understand why other men wanted a beard so much, it was really nothing to be happy about, and it made his face itch. Felt so much better when the thing was finally gone and he was free.
Sunny was a little miffed when she had to wait out in the hall as he and waffles stepped into the conference room, which he could immediately see why they called the warm room. It was less like a conference room and more like mission control. The room was large, lined on all sides with massive monitors which cast pale blue light down onto the large, elongated table with its holographic touch screen.
As soon as he walked in an entire room of officers stood from their seats.
“Commander!”
“Its good to see you, son.”
“We thought you were dead.”
“Earth is going to be happy to hear you’re alive.” He smiled and greeted the others with a firm handshake despite how tired he was, “It takes more than a wormhole to take a human out.” He said taking the seat offered to him near the head of the table.
Admiral Kelly had broken from her usual serious demeanor into a smile, “We are glad to have you back, Commandr. A lot has happened since you left.”
“Can I get a quick summary?”
“Well we learned that the balck hole, or I suppose wormhole now that we know, was created in part by the burg working with the voiceless kree. The voiceless have long been in conflict with the voiced and allied with the burg to turn our ire against the voiced. However, they pose no significant threat without burg technology and so we focused mostly on the burg. Your ship was of course, in pieces, but nearly all you crew survived as they were picked up by other ships in the near vicinity. You were pronounced MIA as was Dr. Krill. ONly three on your ship didn’t make it, and one of our ships was permanently crippled with over 50 casualties and 100 additional injuries.”
HE grimaced, but held back on the guilt for a moment.
“After that battle, the GA came to council, and war was declared on the burg. We sent in the GA armada and over 1000 shock troopers on to the face of the planet. While there a small team comprised mostly of your old crew discovered that the burg king was being imprisoned in a cavern below the throne room and allied with him to replace the queen with a successor.”
He had heard that part of the story , but it didn’t cease to amaze him.”
“Beyond that it was actually quite simple.”
“And my ship?”
“We will get to that in a moment, commander, but now its your turn.”
He nodded and sighed hand to his head, “Where to begin. Of course you know I initiated the shatter protocol when it seemed there was no possible escape for my crew. I stayed behind to initiate assuming, like you, it was a black hole. However, when I didn’t die and was shot out to some unknown location, it appeared as if it was a wormhole instead. I managed to crashland the command deck on the planet below, which was habitable. It was an alien world, but seemed rather…. Jurassic…. In nature. I managed to salvage the emergency kits from under one of the crew seats and survived for a week or two on the beach well fed and warm, however, while I was out in an attempt to boost a radio signal, I ran into some sort of alien creature which attacked me. The wounds I received were pretty bad, but I managed to kill it. I was losing blood fast and probably wouldnt have survived if the Omnidroids-”
“Wait, I’m sorry, the WHAT!”
“Sorry, sir, The omnidroids are what I nicknamed them because they look like something form an old movie. Think large ball with five big stumpy legs and a tiny head on toop.”
They nodded and he continued.
“Anyway, I ran into a group of them, and they helped with my sounds. I couldn’t understand them, and I am pretty sure their speech is in a much lower register because it was like listening to whales talk. Anyway, they brought me aboard one of their ships, and kept me there for a day or two. When we landed I was let out into an enclosure of some sort, turned out to be some kind of alien zoo.”
They stared at him.
He stared back.
“Your kidding?”
“No time for joking, commander.”
He shook his head, “I am not joking. I am serious, the enclosure that I was in had perfect temperature plenty of water and lots of food, but I could see other alien creatures outside the window and above me, just looking at me. Drones came in every now and again to feed me or clean the pen.”
They staired in silent awe.
“Anyway, from there I concluded it was likely they didn’t know I was sentient, so I determined that escape was possible if I let them think that. I started trying to figure out if I was being watched, and their response time if i was. Once tht was done I picked an appropriate time to escape, and used the iron eye armor I still had one from meeting with the Kree and pried open the bars before setting all of the other creatures loose. I found Dr. Krill on my way out, and we hijacked a shuttle.”
“How did you know how to get back?”
He shook his head, “I didn’t. But that was when the space dragon showed up.”
They stared at him again.
He held up his hands, “ I swear I am not making any of this up. That is exactly what happened It created some sort of wormhole and I ended up in the middle of a burg battle in space.”
“So there is an entire alien society separate from the one we already have.”
“It seems so?”
“And the shuttle?”
“It was handed over to GA scientists for examination and potentially reverse engineering.”
They nodded.
He waited for them to say anything else before.
“So…. my crew is safe but my ship?”
They shook their heads, “Is gone,” THey held up a hand to cut him off, “However it was actually a  stroke of good fortune as we have been building new ships for the fleet over the past few years, and one of them was close to completion. So, using the scraps leftover from your ship we were able to finish the job.” They leaned forward, “Commander, despite any issues we have had with your commanding in the past, we have determined that to judge you by the standards of the old military was a faux pax on our part. Space is new, and requires something from men that it hasn’t required before.”
He waited to see where this was going.
“The new armada will be nearly five times the size of the old. The captains as they are now will be promoted to fleet commanders and will be over their own unit of ships. The ship that the harbinger was recycled to make, is twice as big as your old ship with room for over 1000 crew members. It has the latest in alien and human technology and is the most advanced space vessel humanity has ever seen.”
It was an important reminder at this point not to pee himself out of excitement, so he kept his face stony, though he wanted nothing more than to jump around like a little girl squealing.
“However, since the captains would be promoted to fleet commander, that means that you will have to be promoted against as well.”
He paused.
“I… but I haven't been commander for all that long.”
“The UNSC fleet is growing at a rapid rate, and to keep up with it, we are going to have to adapt rapidly as well.”
“So, commander, do you accept?”
He paused and looked down at his hands, “I’m not moving to a desk job, sir.”
“No, no you won't. But you will be commanding a larger ship and thousands more people. Do you think you can handle that? He paused again looking down at his hands thoughtfully.
“Yes, I think I can.”

Cruisin’
A/N: I’m really glad for my first Leo one shot that someone gave me the basic plot points because honestly writing for Leo is gonna go one of two ways for me, I’m either going to write him super out of character (or base him off of OOTS which might not be the best idea in my opinion) or it will be in character for this type of fic and you guys will like it. But I promise I’ll get better at writing for Leo either way.
Updated A/N: I ended up writing so much for this but I’m so happy with what I wrote even if it is a little out of character. (2979 words)
Leo x female!reader

Leo had made a habit of trying to leave without anybody noticing and hoping to god they just assumed he was in his room, meditating. But Donnie had knocked on his door and opened it to see if he was there to only come up empty three times this week. THREE TIMES. It was incredibly unlike the fearless leader to just vanish without telling the rest of his team, his brothers, where he was going. Raph knew how brutal he was whenever he came back from a trip to the surface by himself, it was like Leo was the mother hen but no one knew who would tell him off. Splinter? Yeah but it wasn’t like Leo was actually doing anything wrong.
Going up to the surface for a breath of fresh air wasn’t against the rules or whatever. It was the part about not telling his family that stuck out. Eventually even April and Casey started to notice that they saw less and less of the blue banded turtle. Suspicions were starting to grow and it just got to the point where they knew they had to follow him. If he was going out almost five times a week? Something was definitely up.
Following him down to the docks? It was a bit unexpected but it wasn’t like they knew where he was going. Stalking a ninja without being noticed was the hard part, with all the falling behind they did (especially with April and Casey) it was surprising that they hadn’t lost Leo at some point. Watching him walk into an abandoned warehouse was even more sketchy than they thought, so his brothers assumed that he was either being black mailed or he was dealing with crime directly…by himself.
A couple minutes passed and they saw a young girl, around their age, jump down from a boat and make her way into the warehouse with a bright smile on her face. Raph was having none of it, “What if she’s working for the foot?” he whisper shouted to his accomplices. It was a reasonable question, but as far as the brothers knew, Leo was alone with that girl in there.
 *Leo’s POV*
I had been meeting up with her for a couple months now, meeting her by accident when I was out by myself one night near the docks. I liked to stare at the water to help me calm down and this was after a particularly nasty fight with Raphael. Next thing I knew, the wooden roof underneath me had gave way and I blacked out. When I woke up she was there, hovering over me and tending to what little wounds I had. She had somehow managed to carry me to her boat and had me resting on her sofa bed.
The way she looked at me wasn’t with fear or hatred, but concern and dare I say kindness. I learnt that her name was Y/N and she had loved the water all her life, when she was a kid she’d tell grown ups she wanted to be a mermaid when she was older. She loves all marine life, she told me turtles were her favorites, which (almost embarrassingly) made me blush. Hopefully I don’t think she noticed.
We became friends and for some reason I wanted to keep her friendship to myself. Which led to the sneaking out, not telling my brothers or my father where I was going, who I was meeting and why I went I meet them so often. You see, Y/N lived by herself, she didn’t have many friends in the city and all she had was her boat and everything on it. I barely fit under the deck so we ended up meeting in a warehouse nearby, it was warmer and had a lot more space.
Seeing her almost every day helped me regain my belief, that what we were doing for the city was worth it. That even when the people we saved ran away screaming, it was okay because they were safe and not everybody was going to be accepting to who we are or what we do. Even if all we did was help from the shadows, at the end of the day it was better than nobody helping at all.
But tonight? I wasn’t expecting things to go differently. I was expecting an easy going conversation with a girl that I considered as my friend…and nothing else! Nope. But no, my family had to step in at some point. I just wasn’t expecting it to be so…awkward.
“So I told her that yes I do live on a boat but that it’s also none of her business!” Y/N was rambling about how her day had went, especially since she’d ran into someone she had known from high school. She had only graduated last year but nonetheless she wasn’t comfortable with people judging how she lived her life. “Good for you.” I chuckled warmly. Watching Y/N talk had slowly became one of my favorite things, maybe it was the way she described things or how she moved as she reenacted scenes but all I did know was that she looked beautiful. Wait, what?
A sharp tone sounded from Y/N’s bag, taking the irritating device out she answered it. “Oh! Hi Mom.” She blushed as she turned to face me, indicating the door she mouthed to me ‘Is it okay if I take this?’. I nodded, as if she had to ask, I knew she didn’t talk to her parents that often so who was I to say she couldn’t take a phone call?
Shooting me a bright smile before she scooted out the door, she gave me a small wave. I was still waving back even after she had closed the door. What was I doing? All we ever did was talk but I found myself wanting…more? God, just having her as my friend was enough and I was grateful for that but it felt like I had known for a long time that I was looking for a lot more than friendship. Maybe this was why I had kept her away from the others?
*Third person POV*
Crawling through one of the many warehouse windows, the others gazed down at Leo. He was alone and looked a bit…sad? Raph couldn’t help but feel like he was right, maybe the girl was working for the foot and had only just revealed it to Leo after he had given her all the information. On the other hand he should probably check in with his brother before jumping the gun, like he had ever done that before? There was something about how Leo was holding himself that made Raph think twice.
Jumping down, the others followed, with Casey falling into a pile of boxes becoming a clear indicator to Leo that he was no longer alone. Shooting up from his makeshift chair (a crate) Leo skittishly met the eyes of his brothers. “Oh-Hey! Hey guys…what’s up?” Blushing all kinds of shades of green, Leonardo internally face palmed at how he handled their arrival.
“What’s up? What’s up! You have been leaving the lair without telling us for months Leo! Months! We’re worried! That’s what’s up!” Raph yelled. He may not have jumped the gun but he still had a right to be angry. “I’ve…I’ve been busy Raph.” He mumbled pathetically, embarrassed. “Busy? How can you be busy? You haven’t got many hobbies besides taking down the foot! So unless you’ve been doing missions by yourself I want to know exactly what you’re doing?! No excuses!” Raph questioned harshly, Donnie and Mikey just looked disappointed with April and Casey awkwardly standing there witness the family argue. Well, one-sidely argue.
“I…met someone.” The leader muttered, hoping it wouldn’t go as badly as it had so far. “Oh you mean that girl? Who is she? Do you even know Leo? She could be working for the bad guys did that even cross your mind?!” The ran banded turtle accused. “She’s my friend and she saved me! If she was our enemy she would have left me! Or she would’ve hurt me by now, she wouldn’t have let it go on for this long!!” He finally snapped, not wanting Raph to turn his anger to Y/N. She didn’t deserve it after all she had done.
“Look bro just because you got a girlfriend doesn’t give you the right to just flake out on us and not tell us.” Mikey rubbed his arm, sad that all of the lying had to lead to this (but realistically how else was it going to turn out). “Mike I never meant for-wait you think she’s my girlfriend?” Leo’s blush returned in full force. The fact that other people saw it too made him think he wasn’t going crazy? “Well she is. Isn’t she?” April perked up.
“Uhhh-” Before Leo had a chance to explain the warehouse door creaked open. “Hey sorry that took so long my mom wanted to tell me about…macarons?” You seemed to question yourself as your eyes met the three other turtle men and two people. “Um…Hi?” You waved awkwardly, making your way over to Leo. “You didn’t tell me there were others like you?” You laid your doe eyes on him and all of a sudden it felt like his legs were made of jelly.
“Um, I didn’t know when to bring it up?” His voice squeaked as he smiled uneasily. “Well anyway, I’m Y/N. It’s nice to meet you!” You beamed as you looked back at the turtles, making eye contact with the one that seemed to be glaring at you. “Huh, I’m sure you’d love for him to tell you everything wouldn’t you?” Raph snarked “Raph don’t.” Donnie finally spoke up. “No, maybe I should because nobody else will, not even Leo! Who’s supposed to be our fearless leader. It’s ridiculous! He’s so distracted he has no idea if she’s gonna stab him in the back or not.” Donatello glared at his brother as he made his argument right in front of you.
“Wait, you think I’m going to betray your trust?” Turning back to Leo, you needed to know if this was true. “My brothers do. I don’t think you would.” You could tell he was being sincere by how he was looking into your eyes. It made you want to melt. “Hey! Don’t group us into Raph’s spiel! We don’t even know her yet. Besides I don’t see why this is so different from when we met April and Casey.” Mikey reasoned. “Mike’s right. I’m April by the way.” She shook your hand, smiling warmly. “I’m Casey.” He introduced by waving behind the reporter.
“And I’m Michelangelo! Leo’s younger brother and the best looking of the group!” He winked as he slung an arm around you. Jealousy flared up in him for a moment, he shoved him off of you. “Sorry about him, he doesn’t know personal space is a thing!” He growled at the orange banded brother. You laughed at the interaction, “I didn’t know they were your brothers! That’s so cool!” Placing a hand on Leo’s arm you watched him calm down at your touch.
“Anyway I’m Donatello, some would say I’m the brains either way I’m far more intelligent than these knuckleheads.” The purple banded turtle quipped before Raph could throw a punch at him. You were still a bit nervous about him, he clearly didn’t trust you and was very protective of Leo and his family. “Don’t worry, if the others are okay, Raph will be too. He just needs time.” It was as if Leo could read your mind. With the amount of time you two had spending together lately, you wouldn’t be surprised if he had picked up on your mannerisms.
*a couple hours later*
“I mean…it wouldn’t be all that bad if Leo brought you by the lair sometime. Maybe even meet master Splinter.” Raph admitted. You’d thought it would take a couple of days, months maybe to earn even a shred of trust. Although the way you treated and held yourself around his brothers convinced him that you didn’t have a malicious bone in your body.
“Thanks Raphael.” You smiled politely, trying your best to not show how tired you really were. The others had called it quits for the night after hanging out for a bit, dawn was almost here and the turtles couldn’t be seen in daylight hours. “I’ll see you all soon, alright?” Patting down your pockets, you started to back away, double checking you hadn’t forgotten anything. “Aw hell yeah! Next time we see you, we’re playing Mario kart ‘kay?” Mikey pointed finger guns at you before bounding away. “Sure!” you giggled.
Donnie nodded, bowing slightly before walking alongside April and Casey who were yawning, leaning against each other. “I’ll walk you back to the boat.” Leo offered, giving you that smile with all the warm feelings behind it. “Thanks.” You grinned back, kicking the snow in your path into the frigid water below. Living at the docks was usually cold, but with Leo around it made you forget how alone you were, how cold reality was. You wish he was around more often but after tonight you realized how much he had given up just to come and see you. Even though what he did was wrong it made you feel…special, like you were special to him.
“Is it true you snuck away from your family just to see me?” Curiosity boiled over, the look on Leo’s face confirmed it. He felt guilty, you know that, but had it been worth it? “Yeah…it’s true. I just, didn’t know how to tell them…how to tell you, I can’t even imagine what master splinter would say if he found out I got knocked out so easily and was rescued by…you.” It seemed a bit back handed the way he had phrased it, like his father wouldn’t like you, but the way he had said it was completely different. His whole demeanor had turned soft and a short walk felt like it lasted an eternity.
When you reached the boat, facing him before saying goodbye, searching for the words you knew you had to say. Leo beat you to it. “I don’t want to make anything awkward between us after tonight. I hope you know that the last couple of months have been really…special, to me. I just want to know if they’ve been special to you too.” He admitted albeit sheepishly. “Of course they have Leonardo. I don’t think I could ever be awkward around you, if anything you calm me down. Even that night when I found you out cold in the shed, I knew I should have been panicking but knowing you needed help, my help, calmed me right down. Somehow I found the strength to get you back.” You let a little laugh, feelings bubbling beneath your words. You just wondered if he felt it too.
“I’m happy to have you in my life and I knew that meant introducing you to my family eventually. I just wasn’t expecting it to be in the form of an interrogation.” You both burst out laughing at that one. Starting to see color in your peripheral vision, you knew the sun was waking up. “Leo tonight was awesome, I don’t mind that you kept your family a secret, for whatever reason. Besides I look forward to beating Mikey at Mario kart.” Chuckling uneasily, you didn’t want to say goodbye, even if you were going to see him the next night. It had become less and less easy as your feelings towards him had grown. He gave you a half smile before stepping forward, the beginnings of sunlight glinting in his eyes. Your heart rate picked up as you realized you were practically chest to chest. “I’ll see you tonight.” He breathed. You could…you wanted to, but was it the right moment? Of course it was, but you could tell he was nervous underneath. His eyes were searching every other part of your fave besides your eyes and…lips. “See you.” You whispered slowly, dragging out the moment.
That was when his eyes met your lips, his head tilted slightly, sun rays creeping dangerously up his skin. All it took was breaking down the last of your resolve and trusting your toes to carry you the rest of the way. It was a brief brushing of lips, eyes meeting before he wrapped his arm around your back, his other hand cupping your cheek. He was surprisingly warm, each kiss told you that, even with your eyes closed you could tell he was smiling. He was buzzing with such happy energy. Wrapping your arms around his head in a prom-esque kind of way, you leaned into him, soaking in all the warmth before he pulled away for air.
You could see the sun rising in the blue, but you knew he was staring at you. “I really wish I didn’t have to go right now. I wish I could stay.” Leaning his forehead on yours, his hands on your hips now. All you could do was smile up at him. “Just think of it as something to look forward to tonight.” You smirked. “Heh, I tried to tell Mikey that I wasn’t ‘cruising’ or whatever but I realized tonight I kind of was.” He flirted back, kind of. “You tell yourself that honor boy, I’m the one who found you in the shed.” You laughed before giving him a gentle push.
“See you.” He pecked your lips again before finally separating from you. “See you then.” Beaming, you stepped onto the boat, watching him jog away with a wide grin on his face. Before you knew it he was out of sight and you were doing a little victory dance.

Beth and UARF!Billy - ❤♡❥ღ💕💘💝💓💌💟💙💚💜💛
Heart-Eyes || -
Five A.M.
Beth’s barely awake as she comes into the office, coffee in hand, only to come face to face with the widest grin she has ever seen on Hal Gates’ face. Dark eyes dancing, he relieves her of her thermos cup, takes both her arms in his hands, and swing-dances her around the cramped space where they work.
“We’ve done it, girl!”
Though abjectly confused, Beth can’t help but grin in return. “Wha’ve we done?” She wants to be just as thrilled, wants to share in the old man’s joy. “We’ve got data on white pointer mating! I’m running the compile now, we should be able to parse it and watch the video footage within an hour or two!”
She’s floored.
The shock is clear on her face, even her mouth drops open a little. Often bandied about as the Holy Grail of marine biology, great-white mating is known to exist. Despite decades of research into the habits of the species, that particular bit of knowledge has eluded marine biologists.
“Wha...? How?”
“Mate of mine, Crawford down in New Zealand has taken a fisherman’s eye-witness account on our elusive little friends, and shared video. Crawford sent me all of the data.”
“Oh, Hal.”
Dr Gates nods at her eagerly and once again promenades her around some tables, brushing past a stack of hastily shoved aside folders with charts of migration patterns, weather reports, and feeding data. Then, far more carefully, he hands her into a seat and plops down into an office chair, slapping his knees in pleasure and pride.
“Speaking of mating rituals...”
Beth laughs but blushes at the same time, eyes askance. She suddenly knows what he’s going to ask, or at least of whom.
“...And since we have so little to do until all the research is collated and complied...”
“Must we?”
“No finer time, girl.”
She holds her hands up to stave him off until she gets up, crosses the room and takes a sip of her coffee. Not exactly how she wanted to start the day, but there’s no real reason not to humour her mentor.
“Have at, den.”
“Excellent.” Hal Gates really is an inveterate old gossip.
~*~
❤: who is more affectionate in public? in private?
Beth laughs. Okay, so this isn’t really so bad. “I t’ink I gotta say...I’m more affectionate in public. Mos’ of da time, Doctah Manderly... just doesn’t know what t’ do. Very stiff, hands in his pockets or stand at parade rest.”
The last cocktail party had been a half disaster, between trying to get William to mingle with the public attendees and not leave to check on his seals at first opportunity. The one time he surprised her was when he put a hand on the small of her back though the illusion was broken when she found that the six-foot-six man was trying to ultimately hide behind her. No amount of mock-tails were going to spare him any acute discomfort.
“Probably for da best. No offence, but he’s very definitely...ah....British.”
“None taken.” Hal offers her a wink and taps the side of his nose.
“But even behind close doors? He just... lil uptight, I guess. I sometimes wonder if mebbe he’s worried about havin’ an episode, and some affections are difficult when you have a service dog nearly t’ree-quarters ya size intent on doin’ her job, but I’d say he at least tries when it jus’ da two of us. Fingahs in my hair, brush against my arm. Da kine.”
Hal nods, knowing the specifics without having to drag them out of her.
♡: who is the bigger romantic openly? secretly?
"I t’ink,” she begins, carefully considering this one. “Dat anyone who loves da sea so much dat dey would give up a whole life to dedicate demself to it...got a big romantic soul. What is da ocean, if not love an’ life, an’ all dat we dream of in songs an’ poetry? I only t’ink it’s harder for him to express dat because well..”
She makes a dismissive gesture.
It isn’t that he grasps the concepts of language and expression, they’ve certainly entertained passionate arguments, verbal jousts that have filled the air with sign and countersign.
“Romantically speakin’ I jus’ don’ see him as da type dat I’m gonna find outside my window wi’ an ole boom box, playing In Ya Eyes by Petah Gabriel, ya know? But I also don’t believe he wouldn’t t’ink about it. So secretly? Him. Openly, me.”
❥: who is more likely to plan something big for valentine's day?
“Honestly, Hal...I’d have t’ say him. He’s a planner. Wants every detail to be perfect, will second guess himself a hundred times jus’ to make sure dere no wrinkle in the research. Me? Always been da spontaneous kine, except when it came to really wantin’ to work wit’ you.”
Hal pats her lap, his face soft.
ღ: who is more likely to initiate hand-holding in public?
“Again, it would be William. I don’ know wha’ he’s t’inkin’ a lot of da time, if he’s even aware dat I am dere sometimes. An’ I don’ really wanna make a big deal about it, don’ wanna ovahstep. For me, it’s a much more difficult proposition, is like...touch is where I’m most comfortable, outside of typing endless notes or readin’ data.”
She nods toward the words scrolling along the screen. She fully disclosed her disabilities when she applied for the position so thankfully she doesn’t have to explain now. Most of the other people at the facility don’t even really notice. Except for maybe Ben who sees too much and maybe says too little. That’s to be expected though when you gather a bunch of scientists and stick them in one beautiful place.
“You want him to initiate more, don’t you?”
“I would, yeah. But dere always more important kine and so really guess it nevah really matter.”
💕: who is more likely to make huge declarations of love in front of other people?
“Fair question an’ I guess dat would be me. We...we agreed not to make a big t’ing about any of dis, you know how quirky everyone here is, an’ in case it doesn’t work out, we don’ want da kine t’ get weird. Especially wi’ James an’ Miranda. So if somet’ing like dis were t’ happen it’s probably because he push all my buttons an’ my tempah got da best of me, right? Could see it happenin’ over breakfast. On da beach. Mebbe by da pools.”
Which is why she tries so hard to keep her passions in check. She doesn’t want to blurt out anything that can’t be taken back.
💘: who developed a crush on the other first?
“Couldn’t say,” and in those two words it is the breadth and depth of her honesty. Beth doesn’t have crushes in the same way most people do. She’s never seen anyone and instantly found herself immersed in fantasies, desires, a desperate need to be around them. She might find someone intellectually stimulating and enjoy the conversation. She might notice that something about them calls to her artist’s eye and be aesthetically pleasing in its symmetry, someone might make her laugh but she doesn’t dwell. And by the time there is the first inkling that she might want more out of a situation or relationship, she’s already become close friends. Or she watches as that object of her affection drifts beyond reach and she tells herself she’s happy because they clearly needed something more than she’s even capable of giving.
And sometimes, Beth wonders if she isn’t really broken or damaged in some way. Because she can’t even say she ever had a crush on Billy. She doesn’t know that she can say she has any expectations other than they look good together on paper, and it’s been drilled into her since birth that appearances *do* matter. “Mo’beddah you should ask him.” Gates doesn’t say anything, he only nods.
💝: who spends more time (possibly overthinking) what presents to get the other?
“William. For same-same reasons as Valentines Day, an’ da need for everyt’ing to be as exactin’ as he can make it. Like, how hard and how long it take him to find...or more likely, *breed* dem two purple neocardinas in my office?” Shrimp like the two in her tank, deliriously happy and spoiled and free of predators, are rare in size and colour, and yet… there they are. Then there’s the allegorical evidence of his severe and frothing dislike of mass consumption marketing, the complete commercialisation of every secular and religious holiday, the pastiche of feelings tacked on almost like an afterthought.
💓: who initiates most physical contact?
Beth hesitates. That’s slightly more personal than the other questions so far and truth be told she’s a little ashamed of having to answer without specific parameters. But it is a question, and she did agree to answer them with the same honesty as she offers Hal in all their other work and conversations. “I’ve always done well wi’ sensory input dat was based in kine oddah dan auditory. Smell, taste, seeing… but of alla dem, touch has always been important to me. Textures, near imperceptible data processed t’rough skin. An’ I guess dat I use dat wi’ him. Way to express ideas or sensations dat might not come across ordinarily. Enthusiasm, excitement, humour, rage, disappointment. I wan him to feel an’ understand when I don’ have da words in me, or know how to express. A lot of da time, it’s accidental or at least….subconscious.” A beat goes by. “I don’t believe he really cares much for it.”
💌: who is more likely to send cutesy texts to the other?
This one is hard for her to answer because they aren’t really cutesy text people. Most of their days are too filled with very real world drama, service to the greater good, the understanding and conservation of the most vulnerable environments and animals within. There’s weather, there’s reports, there’s an entire litany of experiences that don’t leave much time to play around until well after hours when they can finally seek well deserved liberty. However, Billy does sometimes send her pictures of the seals doing very cute seal things, or Annie shepherding him and his charges with the boss-vibes of the Queen Mother. In the end she only offers her mentor a smile and a shrug.
💟: who spends time reading their zodiac compatibilities?
“Oh absolutely I do. Find da whole pseudo-science of it fascinatin’, especially when da stars are not in da same position as dey were when it was invented an’ da psychological impact it has on our species is jus’ totally wild, you know?”
Beth knows that she’s the textbook definition of a Cancerian woman, and Billy does a good job providing a counter-argument on being a Libra. Further there’s a bit of an annoyance factor; he thinks junk science ‘belongs in the bottom of the bin with the rest of the rubbish.’ And he has a point, to some extent, even if she doesn’t agree with him. Not everything can be cold facts and numbers. Sometimes a little playfulness was in order and he absolutely needed to be reminded of that.
Hal laughs and shakes his head. “You’re going to do my chart then, aren’t you?” “Wit’out a doubt, Doctah Gates.” She wiggles her brows.
💙: who is more protective?
“I think objectively, I am. You know William’s troubles, and I have to keep them all in mind dough it’s not like he can forget dem, right? Some of his facts aren’t… I’ve consulted with some medical doctors and if we are careful, dere’s a lot he can experience dat he sees out of reach but I don’ like bringing dem up because I don’ want to agitate him. Only can lead t’ problems.” She does wish though that he’d trust her a little more, that he’d let go of some of his well deserved fears. That he’d let himself out of his shell and accept that even with limitations he can do many of the same things as the rest of the group does. But he seems content enough to hang back, ever the observer. And she doesn’t know if it’s her place to try to drag him into things though she might be better at it than anyone else. Miranda has told her as much.
💚: who tends to get sick more often? who is better at taking care of the other?
Hal’s question is really a continuation of the previous one and once again she has to call Billy out on it. Because she’s never really been sick a day in her life, not since early childhood and the culmination of that was the test bite that nearly lost her the leg she keeps tucked away, hidden out of sight whenever possible. “Dat seems a small kine ingenious, he no can help his seizure disorder. An’ I feel like he really ought to have a good psychologist. I t’ink some t’erapy would do him good. Spends too much time in his own head an’ mebbe not enough taking charge of his life. I know he can be afraid of lots of t’ings but it nevah really *has* to be dat way. But I also don’ wanna push him, for same-same reasons I mention before. You can lead a shark to chum but no can make him frenzy, know what I mean?” The analogy is silly. Billy wants so much more than what he feels he has. And a darker current in the back of her mind wonders if they would still be the same if he felt he could reasonably have them. That feels so selfish and toxic and she really has no place casting judgement on him when maybe she’s no better off than he is, only expressing it differently.
💜: who said "i love you" first? or, if neither has said it yet, who is more likely to say it first?
It’s strange how perceptive he is and goes in for the killing bite. The honest truth is that neither one has said it. And neither one likely will. Billy has layers of guilt and trauma, has beliefs that she cannot get a single foothold to try and tear apart. He doesn’t feel deserving of such a finer emotion. And Beth? She has her own reasons. She doesn’t even know if love is a thing that exists or if it’s some fairy-tale people tell themselves to make it easier to get by. She believes in affection, and she believes that people bond the same way packs and pods and herds do. But she feels the concept of love is poisonous. Ruinous in the way it can destroy someone from the inside out. And how any time she’s ever thought she’d felt it, it was ripped out from her grasp. She won’t say it. She won’t hear it.
She doesn’t answer him immediately, but instead gets up and paces away, appearing as though she’s checking on some of the cameras situated around the bay. The wall that she’d left down for Hal goes back up, slamming into place.
“Research from both psychology and neurology fields have found that there are twelve different areas of the brain that light up and work together when two people are attracted to one another, releasing chemicals like dopamine, adrenaline, oxytocin and vasopression. All the symptoms people experience are simply animal-instincts provided to guarantee that we as a species survive by either wanting to mate, or flee.”
💛: who believes in soulmates?
And Gates understands he’s made an error in judgement, though he’d only been trying to be helpful in a meddling kind of way. Anyone at the facility could see that Billy and Beth were two sides of a very quirky but ultimately needed coin. That they’d both changed each other in the two years she’d been a research fellow, and how they’d both blossomed for it. Well, anyone but the two of them. And this had seemed like such a good idea at first, tied into shark mating habits which he’d hoped she’d take better than she is.
Her answers have thus far matched up quite nicely with the boy’s.
Sadly, especially this one. She doesn’t turn to look at him. “There are no such things, Doctor Gates. And even if there were, statistically it would be almost impossible to meet a soul mate. Within the same general age group there are about a half a billion potential companions all over the world. One would have to travel the entirety of the world, every remote pocket of the planet. Secondly, there’s no scientific proof that souls even exist, and enough studies across various disciplines to prove that they don’t. Believing in such nonsense only makes a person unhappy. And all that aside, most mammals are not biologically programmed for monogamy and I doubt human beings are either.” Because if they were, why would anyone leave someone they claimed to love?

Electic Moves--Montgomery Scott x Reader (ToS/AoS compatible)
This is the LONGEST insert I have ever written holy MOLEY. Here it is at a whopping 5,423 words. I mostly wrote this with ToS!Scotty in mind but I think it also works for both ToS and AoS! I’ll also pop this up on Ao3. Fic is based off my favorite band The Orion Experience and their song Electric Moves
Warnings: Kissing
Electric Moves
“Alright that’s the last of the wires!” you yelled to your superior wiping your safety glasses clean of debris.
“Alrigh’ let me take a look at ‘em,” Montgomery Scott said, crouching next to you. He examined the junctions of the circuit boards and nodded in approval. “Not bad…not bad at all Lieutenant. No bubbles… joints are solid. This soldering is better than some of my own. Must be those steady medical hands.” He winked at you and you put your safety glasses back on to conceal a blush.
“Thank you Mr. Scott,” you replied.
“Lass, I’ve told you already just call me Scotty. Don’t make me order you now,” he joked.
“Sorry. Thank you Scotty,” you put your tools back in the small box and hand it back to the older man. His hand brushed over yours as he takes it from you making your breath hitch.
“No thank you for lending us a hand down here. Doctor McCoy said you were a fast learner but neglected to tell me you were a near genius with mechanics. I ought to have a word with him, keeping a talented lass like you all to him—_______, you alrigh’?”
Scotty must have noticed your face morphing into a deep red from underneath your goggles. You run the back of your hand across your forehead, hoping he’d buy the redness from the heat down in the engineering room.
“Yeah I’m…I’m fine just warm. Goodness how do you live like this down here all the time? It’s hotter than Vulcan!” You exclaimed, earning a chuckle from Scotty.
“Well I s’pose we just get used to it eventually, ain’t that right Kern?” A man slightly younger than Scotty nods in agreement, through you’re pretty sure he didn’t hear what Scotty asked. “Well I think we’re all done down here. Thank you again. It was an absolute pleasure having you down here. I hope we’ll see each other soon.”
He held his hand out to you and you took his surprisingly gentle hand in your own. “Any time, Scotty. It was an honor working on her.”
“Her?” he asked, eyebrows raised.
“It! Her—uh the Enterprise!” You ran your hands over your face. Surely your blush was obvious by now.
Scotty belted out a hearty laugh. “Lass, I thought I was the only one who referred to the ship as a lady, other than the Captain of course.”
“Well—yeah it’s like in those old stories about sea mariners and pirates and even in early space exploration. Their ships were always referred to as female so I just kind of let it slip into my vocabulary. Besides,” you gestured to the warp core. “The Enterprise is like a human being. She has a heart, a circulatory system, a brain…All sorts of anatomy. It’s just made of metal.”
Scotty looked at you full of admiration. “Lieutenant _______ I believe you and I are going to get along quite well.”
You turned to him and smiled. “I sure hope so Scotty.”
The next few days you doubled back and forth as both Assistant Medical Officer and engineer. Though most of your time was spent in med bay assisting Doctor McCoy with patients and testing, you also assisted Scotty with warp core diagnostics and repairing small details on the lower decks. You grew fond of the crew down below becoming friends with Ensigns Kern and Russell but your admiration mostly resided with Scotty. If fact, your admiration was becoming even more: each time you passed him your heart would speed up and you could feel yourself going red. Your stomach flipped and your knees weakened and if your eyes met his, oh stars your words would catch in your throat and you could barely keep yourself from stammering. Eventually, though your heart still raced when he got too close, you managed to get used to his sweet conversations about the starship and his daily life.
Two weeks after the two of you met Captain Kirk announced there would be a week-long shore leave after a recent encounter with Harry Mudd left the Enterprise in disarray and in need of refueling.
“Can’t believe we nearly lost the ship in a bet. Mudd would have had us floating through the galaxy if you hadn’t gotten that gauge recalibrated Mr. Scott,” Bones said as he stepped off the landing pad and onto the Federation sanctioned planet.
“Aye, but I can’t take all the credit Doctor. In fact it was your assistant who wrote the equation. She’s the real star of the show,” Scotty said clapping a hand on your shoulder.
“Well Lieutenant, seems like we owe you a drink or two,” Bones said.
“That’s very kind of you but I plan on curling up with a good book and working on some small projects I’ve been meaning to get done during leave,” you replied.
“Ach lass you have to take a bit of a break. You’ve been working plenty,” Scotty said.
“Thank you Scotty but I’m going to sit this one out.”
“I understand,” he replied. You didn’t catch the sadness in his eyes as you turned to head to your hotel room. “It won’t be the same without you!” He called after you.
You turned around and threw him a dazzling smile. “Enjoy your evening gentlemen!” You responded with a mock bow and disappeared into the crowd.
As soon as you were out of sight Bones turned to Scotty. “You really have it bad for her, don’t you?”
Scotty scoffed at the doctor. “I haven’t the slightest idea what you mean!”
Bones rolled his eyes and retorted, “Oh please. ‘It won’t be the same without you’?”
“Well I simply meant we would miss her.”
“You’ve been looking at her like a lovesick teenager. It’s sickening,” Bones responded. The two of them began to walk to a small diner, serving refreshments from different parts of the galaxy. “One bourbon and a scotch on me.”
“Doctor you aren’t going to get me drunk and have me spill my secrets.” Scotty said as a Betazonian male placed his drink in front of him.
“You don’t need to spill anything it’s written all over your face. You get all goo goo eyed with her. Nurse Chapel noticed it, Uhura noticed it, hell, even Spock has mentioned how you’ve been talking about her nonstop.”
Scotty sighed and took a sip of his scotch. He ran his hand through his chestnut hair for a moment before saying, “I don’t know what to do McCoy. She’s on my mind constantly. Working, off duty, hell even in my dreams. The first day when she came down to work on the circuitry she was so kind and sweet, a wee shy too, but she’s also smart and creative. The way she figured out the equation to save our ship was incredible!”
“Then what seems to be the trouble, Mr. Scott? You aren’t technically her reporting officer so there aren’t any regulations against it.”
“That’s not the problem I just…I don’t want to make her feel uncomfortable. She’s a quiet woman and she hasn’t made any indication that she wants to pursue anything outside of work. I, well, I don’t even know if she considers me a friend,” saying that out loud broke Scotty’s heart and McCoy could see it on his face.
Bones waved the bartender over and ordered another round for his friend. “Listen Scotty, I’m a doctor not a love expert. But I do know my assistant pretty well and she talks about you a lot. She sings your praises. Hell, she’s been spending more time with you than in her own office. The girl likes you she’s just too shy to make the first move.”
Scotty shook his head in doubt and McCoy sighed. “Come on Scotty. Let’s finish up our drinks and we can talk about this some other time. I know Jim was thinking about going to a little hole in the wall club of some sort and I’m going to need someone to help carry his miserable behind back when he out drinks himself.”
Scotty stared into his glass and said, “Aye.”
 ***
Meanwhile you began to unpack your shore leave bag, distracted by Scotty’s words.
‘It won’t be the same without you.’ What could he mean by that? He’s never been out with me before, heck I’ve never been out with anyone on the starship before. Could it be that he had hoped I would come out?
“This is all so confusing!” You yelled to yourself, throwing down a towel. “Stupid feelings.”
You flopped on your bed and stared at the pastel purple ceiling weighing your options. You could continue to pine after Scotty in secret, watching him as he eventually fell in love with someone else and—no that felt awful. You could tell him how you feel, get rejected, and never be able to work in the same room with him—that felt even worse.
You sat on the edge of your bed and sighed. You needed to do something to keep your mind off Scotty. The clock on the computer on your desk flashed 20:00.
“Computer, what is there to do on this planet during the evenings?” You asked. The computer whirred to life, ticking with calculations.
“Sources for entertainment near your current location. There are six bars within walking distance. Two are karaoke bars, three are exotic stripping clubs, and one is a dance club.”
A dance club? You thought excitedly. It’s been so long since I’ve been dancing. “Who’s performing at the dance club? Anyone good?”
The computer whirred again before stating: “Popular intergalactic band The Orion Experience will be performing live throughout your shore leave.”
“Thank you Computer. That is all,” you said and the computer powered down. You sat on the edge of your bed staring at your luggage in front on you. If I’m going to do this, I’m going all out tonight.
You sprung up in excitement and grabbed your bag. “Screw sadness, screw the rules, I’m about to be Cinderella at the ball.”
An hour and a half later you checked yourself out in the mirror. You purchased two dresses, your choice for this evening was a jeweled emerald green dress that stopped mid-thigh and white boots. You even splurged on some makeup and changed your hair. At a glance you could barely recognize yourself.
Shooting a wink at your reflection you strutted out of your room and out the door not even noticing the three Starfleet officers you passed on the street.
***
“Mr. Scott, Bones is right. You need to just come right out and say it. Quick, like a band aid. It will be over in a minute.” Captain Kirk tried to persuade the Scotsman.
“Thank you, Captain, for the sage advice. And thank you Doctor McCoy for telling the Captain about my personal affairs, I greatly appreciate it,” Scotty replied with a glare to the brunette.
McCoy rolled his eyes. “Well I’m sorry but I wasn’t going to let you look like a depressed Sehlat the whole shore leave.”
“I do not look like a depressed Sehlat!” exclaimed Scotty. Bones and Kirk stared at him intensely and he relented. “Gentlemen, I thank you for support. But I’m an old man—much older than __________. And she should be with someone else her age. As beautiful as she is, finding someone else wouldn’t be a problem.” Scotty’s eyes began misty and he blinked back tears.
Kirk clapped a hand on his friends shoulder. “Now Mr. Scott there will be no tears tonight. The night is young and there is a bar just down the streets with all sort of intergalactic alcohol. Let’s forget about our problems even if it’s just for the night.”
But I don’t want to forget about her. Mr. Scott thought to himself, but he knew voicing his opinion would get drowned out by his two friends. “Aye, where are we going lads?”
“Well,” Kirk began rubbing his hands together. “I thought we would check out that bar I was telling Bones about earlier. I’ve heard that they have these dancers that—“
Kirk was cut off as a woman walked past in a short green dress and white boots. The three men stared after her as she sashayed out the door into the crowd.
“Jim…who was that?” McCoy asked staring after her.
“I’m…not sure. I don’t recall ever seeing her before,” Kirk replied.
“She has to be on the Enterprise though. This hotel was booked for us by Starfleet and no other ships are docked so it’s just us,” Scotty said.
“She couldn’t be a Romulan spy could she?” McCoy asks.
“A Romulan, spy or not, would never—could never—have that strut in their step. Especially in those shoes,” Kirk responded.
“Of all things you could comment on you mention her footwear?” Bones joked.
“Of all the things I could comment on her shoes were the most appropriate. Do you have anything to add Doctor McCoy?”
“Not at all, Jim.”
“Good,” Kirk began to follow the woman but was stopped by Scotty.
“You don’t plan on following her do you?” He asked.
“Scotty, the three of us have no idea who she is and we know our crew better than anyone else. Whoever she is, she’s obviously gotten through our security systems and we need to know how. Besides aren’t you two a little curious to see who she is?”
Scotty sighed for what seemed to be the hundredth time that day and he followed his two friends through the street after the mysterious, and yet oddly familiar, stranger.
The bar pulsed with the beat of the band and you were bumping and grinding your way through the crowd. You felt different, alive, on the dance floor. A cheer went through the crowd as you spun through a dance circle. Each move was filled you with energy, you were electrified by the music and you sang out with the rest of the crowd.
“Somebody told me, you got electric moves. Out on the floor you’re like lightening striking,” you sang off key with everyone as the band went into the final chorus. You turned again as the song began to transition to another but froze mid step as you spotted McCoy, Kirk, and Scotty staring in your direction whispering to themselves. You made eye contact with the chief engineer for a brief second, both confusion and recognition evident in his eyes. He slowly got off his chair and began to walk towards you, startling you out of your trance. You turned your back towards him and ran out the door.
***
The three men sat down at bar scoping the dance floor for the mysterious woman.
“You sure she went into this one Jim?” McCoy asked the blond sipping a drink.
“Positive. Keep your eye out for anything suspicious,” Kirk said surveying the dance floor. “Mr. Scott, have you given any more thought to what Bones and I were saying earlier.”
“Now Captain, I told you I don’t want to pursue anything—“ he was cut off by a cheer and applause on the dance floor.
“There Jim! She’s over there,” McCoy exclaimed. The three men stared in her direction, watching as she danced sensually, hands in the air laughing and stomping her foot to the beat.
“She looks familiar. I just can’t put my finger on it,” Kirk said. McCoy and Scotty nodded fixated on the woman. She did one final turn as the song transitioned into a new one but, as she looked in their direction she froze.
“It can’t be…” Bones mumbled.
“Is that…Lieutenant ___________?” Kirk asked still staring at her.
Scotty watched her intently as they maintained eye contact. It was _________ there was no doubt in his mind. Seeing her with such fire in her soul was intimidating, there was no doubt about that. She radiated confidence and seeing her with such energy made Scotty’s heart swell in infatuation. Clenching his fists, Scotty knew he had to take a chance or he was going to have a heart attack. Taking a deep breathe he stood up, knees weak not from the alcohol but from the nerves. He steadied himself and began to approach her gaining confidence with each step. However about ten steps in the woman who held his soul broke eye contact and ran out the door, leaving the shattered pieces of his heart where she last stood.
***
Morning hit you like a Bat’leth; your mouth was dry and every vibrant color of the wall sent a wave of nausea through your body. The headache you had was unsurmountable and you grabbed the hypo you left on the table and injected it. Moments later your headache was gone and your nausea was slightly more manageable.
You revisited the events of last night grinning s the memories came back to you. You looked at the dress that was discarded on top of your suitcase with a fond grin, eagerly thinking about the second number you had waiting for tonight. However your feelings of excitement were smothered as soon as you remembered who saw at the bar watching you. McCoy. Kirk. Scotty.
“Oh my God,” you cried out to yourself putting your head in your hands as you tried to erase that memory from your mind.
They must have thought I looked ridiculous, you thought. I made such a fool of myself. Tears pricked at your eyes and you tried to will them away. Even though you knew none of them would make fun of you—well McCoy might tease you but you could handle him—you knew it would impact how the other two would look at you. If there was a black hole close enough you would jump right into it.
Your stomach growled and decided to get something to eat to keep your mind off of everything. Throwing on your blue Starfleet uniform you walked across the street into a diner. Beings of different races, genders, and ages sat throughout the establishment and were even peppered with Enterprise officers and crew.
Walking to your table you heard the voice of someone you didn’t want to hear: Captain Kirk.
“Lieutenant _________! Come have a seat with us,” he said.
You sighed and though you could have rejected his proposal you also wanted to have a moment to explain yourself—to explain you didn’t always look so uncoordinated and dramatic.
“Good morning Captain, gentlemen,” you nodded to McCoy and Scotty as you sat beside the latter. He didn’t greet you with the usual smile he always had around you. In fact he didn’t greet you at all.
“We were just discussing this woman that we saw dancing last night. It really was something else,” Kirk said.
Oh God here it comes, you thought to yourself.
“She was fantastic, _________, you should have seen her. She had this control over the floor. It was almost supernatural,” McCoy exclaimed. “At first glance we thought she was you,”
You nearly choked on your water. “You thought she was me?” They didn’t realize it was me?
“We certainly did. Then Scotty said you planned on working on some projects during shore leave,” Kirk replied. “How did they turn out?”
“O-oh. Fine. They weren’t anything too difficult,” you replied, relieved.
“And your reading? How was that?” Scotty asked bitterly.
You were taken aback by the harshness in his voice. “It was…fine I guess. Scotty are you—“
“I’m fine Lieutenant __________,” Scotty said. Kirk and McCoy exchanged looks as Scotty got up from the table. “Lads I have some work that I need to catch up on so I’m going to head back to my room. Have a good day.”
The three of you watched as Scotty left the diner without as much as a goodbye to you. You looked down at your plate of food that was just served suddenly nauseous again.
“What the hell was that all about?” McCoy asked in shock.
“I have no idea,” Kirk replied. “But I intend to find out.” He and McCoy followed the Scot out the door leaving you behind, your food hardly touched as tears welled in your eyes.
***
“Scotty! Hey Scotty!” McCoy pounded on the door to the Chief Engineer’s room. “Open up we know you’re in there.”
“Step aside Bones,” Kirk said, punching an override code. The doors slid open to Scotty’s room revealing the Scot seated at his table a bottle of scotch in hand.
“Hello lads, I wonder what brings you here?” Scotty asked sardonically, taking a hearty swig of his drink.
“You know very well what brings us here Scotty. What the hell is your problem? You’ve been in a crappy mood since we got back to the hotel last night and now you’re taking it out on _________?” McCoy asked, arms crossed over his chest. Kirk watched Scotty, slowly putting pieces of the puzzle together.
“I don’t feel like answering that question, Dr. McCoy. Frankly I don’t want to discuss anything with anyone. I wish to be left alone with my scotch,” Scotty said.
Captain Kirk sat at the table to level himself with Scotty. “Scotty,” he said. “Mr. Scott, look at me.”
Scotty sighed and turned to Captain Kirk. Kirk studied him for a brief moment.
“We were right weren’t we Mr. Scott?” Kirk asked softly and put a hand on his friend’s shoulder.
McCoy looked between the two. “Right about what, Jim?”
“The woman at the bar last night. It was Lieutenant __________, wasn’t it?” Jim asked.
Scotty stared at the Captain for a long time before whispering, “Aye.”
The three men waited in silence, waiting for someone to say something. The room was filled with nothing but the ambience of chatter in the halls and the echo of Scotty’s affirmation.
“She ran from me,” Scotty said mournfully.
Kirk nodded.
“Why? Why would she run?” Scotty asked.
“I can’t answer that for you, Scotty,” Kirk said.
Scotty stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the city below. Midday had approached by then, the sun high up in the cyan sky. “I don’t know what I was thinking going up to her. She was having the time of her life dancing and singing. What would she want with an old fool like me?”
“That’s horseshit,” McCoy said, going over to Scotty.
“Bones…” Kirk warned.
“No, Jim I have to say it. Scotty what you’re saying is pure horseshit and you know it. You’re making assumptions and that’s all you’ve done this whole time. Have you even talked to ________ about your feelings yet? I bet you haven’t and I guarantee you have her feeling like complete crap after the way you ignored her this morning.”
Scotty contemplated everything his friend said, knowing he was right. He hasn’t talked to ________ since they docked and not giving her a chance to explain herself wasn’t fair.
“But why would she run from us. From me?” Scotty asked.
“Hell if I know. Maybe she was embarrassed that we saw her, you know how shy she is. And I’m not saying what she did was excusable, but dammit talk to her. Ask her why she ran away and tell her how you feel. Because if you don’t you’re going to lose any chance to have with her, and that will be a damn shame,” McCoy said.
Scotty nodded his head, understanding that everything McCoy was saying was tough love. “Do…do you have anything to add, Captain?”
Captain Kirk waved his hands innocently. “No…no I do believe Bones covered it all.”
Scotty grabbed some glasses from his cabinet and poured drinks for the three of them. “Well then let’s have a drink shall we? And then…well then I’m going to go make a visit to ________’s quarters.”
***
You wrapped your hair in a towel as you stepped out of the shower and threw on some loungewear. Your hangover was completely gone by now but in its place was a heavy heart. You messed up really bad, running away from him last night and then not explaining yourself this morning. You looked at the dress laid out on your bed and sighed, debating whether or not you still wanted to go out when you heard a knock on the door.
“Who is it?” You called out.
“It’s Scotty. May I come in lass?” He asked.
You nearly tripped over yourself running to the door, pressing the button to open the door to let him in.
“Mr. Scott, good evening,” you said hoping the waver in your voice wasn’t as prominent as you thought.
“Back to calling me Mr. Scott are we?” He asked gruffly as he stepped inside.
You winced at his tone. “Sorry…Scotty—“
“I was joking _________,” he said with a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.
“Oh.” The two of you stood in silence trying to figure out what to say next. Moment’s passed, then you two both began at once.
“Lass, I—“
“I’m sorry.”
The two of you looked at each other at the same time before letting out nervous laughs.
“You’re sorry?” Scotty asked in slight confusion.
You nodded. “Yes I…I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have run from you. I didn’t…I didn’t want anyone to see me dancing and I was so embarrassed when I saw you…” You were so overwhelmed with everything your lip began to tremble.
“Now, now ________, don’t you start crying,” Scotty said as he wrapped his arms around you and pulled you close to his chest. “You have nothing to be sorry for, this is my fault. I jumped to conclusions.”
You allowed yourself to be held by him for a moment, relished breathing in his scent of scotch and oak, and savored the feeling of his one hand stroking your hair while his other hand rubbed circles on your waist.
After a moment you pulled back to look him in his eyes. “Jumped to conclusions?” You asked.
Scotty took a deep breath and took your hands in his. “Yes I…I may have thought you didn’t want to have a dance with me. Thought that you thought the idea would be repulsive.”
Your hand flew to your mouth. He was going to ask me for a dance?  “I thought you were going to tell me that I looked ridiculous,” you confessed.
Scotty’s eyebrows shot up his forehead. “Now why in heavens would I do that?” He exclaimed.
“I mean…I probably did look ridiculous flailing around like I was,” you said.
Scotty laughed. “You looked nothing of the sort. You…you were incredible! You dance beautifully, hell McCoy and Kirk didn’t even recognize you until I told them today. We thought you were a spy.”
“A spy?” You shout in laughter.
“You have to admit you looked a lot different last night.”
You chuckled and nodded. “I certainly did.”
You two stood in silence for another moment. “Why would you think I wouldn’t dance with you?” You asked.
Scotty sighed, “It was a little foolish of me. I’m so much older than you are—“
“Not by that much,” you cut in.
“But still old enough. I thought you were repulsed by the thought of it. I should have known better,” he said.
“Scotty, I would have very much liked to have danced with you had I not run away,” you said placing a hand on his cheek.
He put his hand over yours, rubbing it slightly. “________ I believe we both are foolish.”
You nodded in agreement your eyes captured in his gaze.
“I—also was going to tell you something last night.” Scotty said hesitantly.
You nodded for him to go on.
“Seeing you dancing there—every time I see you as a matter of fact—I get so overwhelmed in your beauty. That day you first came into engineering you were just a ray of sunshine without saying anything. Then you finished those wires and talked to me and I thought I was going to pass out. You talk about the Enterprise like she was your child and I know you can’t see the way your eyes light up when you talk about her but I do and it can make even Klingons blush. You can imagine what it does to my heart.” Scotty paused to take a breath and you could feel your heart racing.
“_________, I know this might be wishful thinking but I need to tell you that I like you. That I am falling head over heels for you. And I don’t intend on making you feel uncomfortable in any way regardless of how you answer my question. If you want to just be friends and never speak of this again I will. If you want me to leave you alone for the rest of our time on the Enterprise together I will. I just want to ask if maybe you would like to go out with me?”
Your breath hitched head absolutely spinning with every word he said.
“Scotty,” you began. “I would like it very much if you would kiss me.”
A chuckle of relief escaped Scotty as he wrapped his arms around your waist and pulled you in for a gentle kiss. It was neither long nor short, just enough for the two of you to lose yourselves in each other’s touch of your lips.
You both pulled away, light blushes on your cheeks.
“I would love to go out with you Montgomery Scott,” you told him.
Scotty was so overjoyed that he let out a boisterous laugh and hugged you, lifting you a few inches off the ground.
You laughed, body feeling like it weighed only feathers.
“Would you like to go on a date right now?” You asked boldly. “I was thinking about going to the dance club again.”
“Now how could I pass up dancing with the most beautiful woman in the universe?” Scotty said, pecking your cheek.
You blushed, realizing you would never get used to being showered with complements. “Wait here,” you said. “I’m going to change.”
“You could always change right here.” Scotty joked, laughing as your face turned crimson. “I’m teasing you. Go ahead and get ready.”
You shook your head and grabbed your dress of your bed. “Go ahead and sit down. I’ll be right out.”
Scotty sat down and waited in anticipation. He took in all the details of your hotel room wondering what kind of stuff you kept in your room on the Enterprise. He saw your dress from last night peeking out from your suitcase and he chuckled thinking about the last twenty-four hours. You were his; he was yours even with how ridiculous you both acted.
A few moments later, you poked your head out the door. “Hey Scotty, would you mind zipping me up?” You asked holding the front of your dress up.
Scotty looked at you, mouth open in shock. Your hair and makeup were styled the same way you did yesterday but the dress was different. It was a dark blue glittery dress with three quarter sleeves. The dress was short in the front and long in the back and flared out beautifully. You wore black pumps with it.
“Scotty?” You asked, snapping him out of his trance.
“Sorry lass, you just…you look stunning.” Scotty said as he walked over to you.
You turned and he slowly zipped up your dress his fingers occasionally brushing against your skin, leaving your skin burning where he touched you.
Once zipped, Scotty kissed the nape of your neck making you go weak in your knees. You turned to him and pulled him in for a searing, passionate kiss. His hands pulled you tight, dipping you slightly, and ran them across your back. You ran your hands through his mahogany hair gasping slightly at his desperation. He took that moment to slide his tongue in your mouth increasing the passion of the kiss.
The two of you pulled away after a moment, blushes evident in your faces.
“I do believe you owe me a dance.” Scotty whispered to you.
You smiled and pulled him towards the door. “I certainly do. I believe we have time to finish this later if you want?”
“For you, my love, I have all the time in the world.” Scotty said, squeezing your hand as you led him to the club.

okay for real, top 10 video game monster designd
okay so this will be a mix of games i have played/seen and also range in age and quality. This also got long oh my god im sorry, i pulled up my xbox achievements to refresh and I got nostalgic. There are better designs out there but this was on my brain.
1. Gravemind/ The Flood - scared the shit out of me and they’re super gross and vaguely unknowable. Also the gross level I showed you from Halo 3 was the bane of my existence. The thing speaks in trochaic heptameter and says raw ass lines like “I AM A MONUMENT TO ALL YOUR SINS”
2. Jeff from HL:A no spoilers but enemies like that stress me out and he is well executed and designed. A gross dude. I have not played but have watched 2 full playthroughs.
3. All the funky lil dudes from Voodoo Vince for the original Xbox. Fucked up weird ass game that has a charming art style and a lot of platforming. The Imps, bubba gators, and Gingerdeadmen stick out.
4. The sleepytime robots from Battle for Bikini Bottom, stealth based stress plus loud warning noise. My brother and I hated the Rock Bottom level but this game and its music are ingrained in our DNA now.
5. Cacodemon. good round design and I love the evolution over the years. Glory killing the bastards as I figure out Doom Eternal is rewarding.
6. Elites/ Sangheili - yes another halo enemy. But the design is cool and different from regular space marine shooters. The entire culture and structure of the covenant is interesting and way too much lore is involved but the Elites were always so cool to me, compared to the Brutes/Jiralhanae, which are just a bunch of angry gorilla men. And I mean the Arbiter is right there y’all. They also have energy swords.
7. Striders! I’m remembering all the weird biotech synth enemies from Half Life but Striders are terrifying. Flesh and Machine and horrible calls signalling open fire. The tripod war of the worlds thing going on. The Combine scared me playing the games when they first came out because they were so mysterious and unexplained, were they still people or machine and the alien-ness was scary. I’m not scared of Hunters anymore because you can murder them with their own flechettes pretty easily once you get it down.
8. Fallout - Deathclaws. Okay yeah big scary dino, mutated chameleon thing, but these things are fast and tough and the fucking quarry in New Vegas? Leaving Goodsprings and trying to apply Elder Scrolls “I can probably outrun this” logic DOES NOT WORK. They are a great monster, they lumber, they roar, and they will get you. You see one before it sees you and you might have a head start.
9. I might be one of 3 people on this site to play them but Shadow of Mordor/ Shadow of War is fun. Yes it is basically a lotr fanfic game, but the nemesis system is fucking amazing I do not care what people said. Yes its a batman/ass creed clone. SO? I have fun killing orcs! WELL DESIGNED, LOVINGLY GENERATED ORCS. They have personalities and a history with the player character and a set of revolving traits. Also Carnan is fun. Caragors and Graugs, fuck ghuls, but fun design is a lotr homage playground. I wish something else was coming from this studio. If you’re out there Tumhorn Life Drinker I’m not dying again you bastard.
and finally
10. Okay so lore time for this blog. Poison Headcrab zombies are the worst. Great design, scary as fuck, fucked up noises, and really dangerous in close quarters. Headcrabs in general are great designs, i see u facehugger 2.0. Also enemy that jumps at face? awful! more please! anyways, Poison headcrab zombies.
There’s a couple in Ravenholm and a few in abandoned houses on the coast and in the hospital. I hate the noises they make. I used to replay the Orange Box up to Ravenholm and stop back when i was a kid. During my replay this year, my brother was helping me finally do the lambda cache achievement. Whenever we heard one of the zombies call we’d reenact that scene from spongebob where he’d turn around and yell ‘It sounds like someone’s trying to SELL ME SOMETHING!” and so we called them salesmen. “Uh oh, there’s a salesman up ahead, did you hear that?” This whole blog is a terrible inside joke of a spongebob reference used during a half life 2 play-through. You are now cursed with knowledge! Thanks for putting up with me!

Assembly and Assualt
Pairing: Joseph Liebgott x OC x George Luz
Word Count: 3,351
Summary: Andrew and Luz make it to the assembly area. Liebgott and Andrew have a sweet reunion and Andrew has his first taste of the food in France — a shitty cup of coffee. Andrew gets put on main assault of Brecourt Manor, where his marksmanship is truly put to the test.
Thanks again to @whatwouldidowithoutgeorgeluz for the BoB Script of Day of Days! This part would be nowhere near as good if it wasn’t for your script.
In this part, we get into some canon divergence, as I’ve inserted both Andrew and Luz into the assualt on Brecourt Manor. Luz wasn’t present for the assault, he was probably somewhere in the middle of Normandy trying to get to the assembly area.
Part Four of We Happy Few
Easy Company Assembly Area
June 6th, 1944, 0700
Andrew wasn’t going to be the one to tell everyone about the two Germans he killed. Like Luz had said, he was doing his job. He was going to have to kill Germans at some point, it was what he had to do, he signed up for it. But hearing everyone else, bragging about how many Germans they had already killed, seeing the POWs, it was a strain for Andrew not to think about it.
He lost Luz at some point due to Winters calling him over or a search for coffee for the two of them. Yeah, it was coffee. Someone had to be making it in an ammo box somewhere, and Luz was determined to get some. Anyway, Luz has left Andrew alone with his own thoughts.
“Hey, Pretty Boy!” Andrew heard someone call out. He knew who it was. He turned around to see Liebgott, a smile wide on his face.
“Hey, Lieb,” Andrew said, returning the smile. “How was the jump?”
“Not bad, not bad, aside from the plane beside us going down, it wasn’t too bad,” Liebgott tells him. “What about you?
Andrew laughed, “Not that bad. We were shot at, I’m pretty sure, it wasn’t too bad.”
“Could’ve been worse.”
“How’s that?”
“Could’ve been in the plane beside me.”
Andrew chuckled. It was fucked up to laugh at, he knew it was, but it got his mind off of everything. Andrew knew that he was off, he could feel it down into his bones.
“You talk to that Hall guy yet?” Liebgott asks.
Andrew shakes his head. “No, no, not really. Saw him, didn’t think to talk to him, why?”
“They’re calling that kid cowboy when he’s from Manhattan.”
“That’s like calling me a Cali Boy,” Andrew laughed.
“Well, at least he’s not from the middle of nowhere in Illinois.”
Andrew laughed at that. “Hey, my brother got out, didn’t he?” Andrew bore a solemn smile on his face, maybe that’s why Liebgott pulled him to the side.
“What’s wrong, Drew?” Liebgott asked, placing both hands on his shoulders. Liebgott was softer now, he could feel how tense Andrew was.
Andrew sighed. “There were two Germans on patrol last night. Me and Luz were trying to get here and they came across our path and I didn’t know what to do,” Andrew explains. “We hid behind a bush, and they stopped right in front of us,” Andrew tells. He can see every moment of it, ticking by meticulously slow. “I — Lieb, one of ‘em was a kid. Still had the safety on his gun.”
Andrew wasn’t crying over it, but the guilt washed over him like a wave washed over a pebble at high tide. Andrew wraps his arms around Liebgott’s chest, and Liebgott wraps his around the smaller man’s shoulders. Andrew winces a bit. He hasn’t taken the “posture” binding off in two days. He had flown in a plane and jumped out of it with the binding. He knew fully well it wasn’t good for him, but he had to keep it on.
Liebgott places a kiss on the top of Andrew’s head. “It’s alright, Drew,” Liebgott tells him. “You did what you had to do.”
“I’ve been trying to tell myself that all day,” Andrew says, pulling away. “I know this is war, Lieb, but I feel so fucking guilty. They’re nasty Germans, Lieb, and I still feel bad about it.”
“That’s cause you’re a human, Andrew.”
Andrew looks up at Liebgott. No one’s there. It’s just the two of them, no one’s looking. It almost feels like they’re back outside the movie, except they’ve already jumped out of the damn plane.
Liebgott takes Andrew’s chin, tilts his head up just a bit, and kisses him. It’s hungry, again, like Liebgott hadn’t gotten enough from the last time. There’s a passion there, a burning deep inside that Andrew feels as he kisses him back. Andrew pulls away slowly, looking deep into Liebgott’s eyes.
I’m so happy you’re alive, Liebgott’s face screams out. It’s like they can read each other’s minds. It’s a deeper feeling, now. That wasn’t just any kiss, it was something more complex than either of them could describe.
Andrew kisses him again, slower now. He savors it, holding onto every last second.
Liebgott breaks away this time. Andrew smiles at him softly.
“You still taste like cigarettes,” Andrew tells him.
“Oh, is that right?”
“Mm-hmm.”
“Anything else you wanna tell me?”
Andrew thinks for a moment. I’m a fraud, Lieb. “You better get out of here before Luz comes back with my coffee.”
“And if I don’t?”
“He’ll get your ass court-martialed.”
Liebgott chuckles. He has no fucking clue, does he? “And not you?”
“He likes me.” More than that.
“Sure, sure,” Liebgott says. He goes in for a quick peck before walking away, a smirk on his face.
Andrew watched as the older man walked away and down towards Wynn and Guarnere.
You’re fucked, Andrew Marin. Royally fucked.
-
Luz eventually came back with two cups of coffee. “Un black coffee for ze handsome man,” he says in a horrible French accent.
“Needs work, Luz,” Andrew says before taking a sip of the coffee.
“Oh, mon ami, I’m just getting started!”
Andrew feels his face recoil as the liquid washes over his tongue. It’s bitter, burnt, it’s not even coffee.
Luz seems to think it’s in response to the French accent. “It’s not that bad, Jesus, I’ll quit it!”
He coughs as he swallows, shaking his head. “Who the hell made that?”
“Malarkey, I think,” Luz tells him, taking a sip. “It wakes you up, that’s for damn sure.”
“It tastes like boiled horseshit.”
“Better than boiled bullshit.”
“Isn’t that military issued?”
“Yep, straight from Eisenhower himself.”
Andrew chuckles, taking another sip. It’s not as bad this time, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste like shit.
He looks up from his metal mug to see Luz looking at him, his eyes soft, loving. Andrew smiles back at him, getting up and walking over to his side.
“Hey,” Luz says, quietly.
“Hey yourself,” Andrew replies.
“You’re cute when you laugh.”
“Am I?”
“Yeah.”
There’s barely any space between them. Andrew can smell the coffee on Luz’s breath. Despite it tasting like shit, it’s not that bad. Maybe because it’s Luz.
The kiss is gentle and sweet, like Luz. Everything seemed smoother around Luz, like nothing bad was going to happen.
Even though it did.
“You’re so handsome, Andrew.”
“Don’t say things like that, Luz,” Andrew tells him. “I might start to believe them.”
Another kiss. Luz’s hand moves to Andrew’s neck before he pulls away sharply.
“What?” Andrew asks, concerned. “What’s wrong?”
“Be honest with me,” Luz says.
Oh no.
“Is the French accent that bad?”
You’ve got to be shitting me.
“It’s not...great,” Andrew tells him, sighing. “You’ve only been here for a day, you’ll get it in time.”
“Just what I thought you’d say, mon amor,” Luz says, draping his arm over Andrew’s shoulder.
Andrew chuckles. “You’re a romantic even in the middle of a goddamn war.”
“Better than what Sobel would be.”
Andrew lifts up his mug. “Better than Sobel.” he says, taking a long swig. Luz pulls the mug away from Andrew.
“Hey, now,” Luz says. “I don’t want you tasting like boiled bullshit.”
“Well, why not?”
“If I wanted to kiss that, I’d just go ahead and sleep with Eisenhower.”
Andrew let out a fake gasp. “You wouldn’t dare.”
Luz smiles at him with the usual goofy grin. How the hell are we even doing this? Shouldn’t we be fighting a war? “Maybe I would.”
“Oh, General, please don’t take my man away! He’s all I’ve got left,” Andrew plays along.
“I’m sorry, Private, but he’s too damn charming,” Luz says, putting on a deep voice.
“Mercy me,” Andrew says before falling into a fit of laughter. Luz quickly follows, and the two of them were hunched over giggling in the middle of a war.
It only made the next few moments all the more real.
-
Being briefed was nothing to Andrew at this point. It was nothing to any of them. It was something they did, a mental prep before the full assault.
“The 88s we’ve been hearing have been spotted in a field, down the road aways,” Winters informs the men. “ Major Strayer wants us to take ‘em out. There are two guns that we know of, firing on Utah Beach, plan on a third and a fourth here,” Winters draws on his map, “and here. The Germans are in the trenches with access to the entire battery, and with machine gun cover in the rear. We’ll establish a base of fire and move under it hard and fast with two squads of three.”
Andrew only wondered what he would be put on. Probably covering fire.
“How many krauts do you think we’re facing?” Guarnere asks.
“No idea.” Fantastic.
“No idea?” Guarnere questions. He says what’s on everyone’s mind, at least.
“We’ll take some TNT along with us, to spike the guns. Lipton, your responsibility,” Winters says, and Lipton nods.
“Yes, sir,” The sergeant replies.
“Liebgott, you’ll take the first machine gun with Petty, A-Gunner,” Winters says, and Andrew’s heart flutters. A flutter. He knew damn well that Liebgott could take care of himself and he still worried about him. “Plesha, Hendrix, Luz, you take the other. Who does that leave?” Luz was on the same detail, just a different gun. They’d be fine, right?
Andrew raises his hand, along with Guarnere, Malarkey, Buck, the new guy Hall and Toye.
“Compton, Malarkey, Toye, Guarnere, Marin, okay. We’ll be making the main assault. Understood?”
“Yes sir,” they all say together.
We’ll be making the main assault. Andrew’s heart almost stops.
“Alright, let’s pack it up, boys,” Lipton says, and they all leave. Andrew’s still reeling. Main assault. Fucking shit.
-
“Three canons,” Buck says, and everything suddenly becomes far more real for Andrew. Yes, he had already killed people in this war but now it was time for what was supposed to be a mandated slaughter.
He sees Liebgott set up the machine gun. It was almost like he was watching a different person. Liebgott looked up at him for that split second with a face that screamed, Don’t get yourself killed.
“Take Ranney, envelop right, give covering fire,” Winters tells Ranney before turning to Lorraine. When the hell did he get here? “Lorraine, on the machine gun. Don’t give away your position until you have to. And I want that TNT as soon as you see we’ve captured that first gun. Go.”
Lipton replies with the standard “Yes, sir,” and they’re off to they’re position and Andrew’s back to his.
See, shooting at someone was very different than shooting at someone and being shot at in retaliation. The Germans seemed to have a never-ending cycle of bullets coming, flying by your head and shoulders and anywhere on your body that seemed to even slightly move.
Winters pulls the men away from Liebgott and Petty and through the trenches to the first 88. Then, of course, someone gets shot. It’s a damn war, everyone gets shot.
It’s Wynn who goes down and Andrew can’t tell where he’s been hit. Doc Roe isn’t here, and neither is Spina, so no one can call for a damn medic.
While Wynn is screaming about being sorry, a grenade is thrown into the trench. Winters yells at Toye to roll and he does, covering Wynn from the blast as well.
“Guarnere, Malarkey, Lorraine, secure that gun! Compton, Marin, covering fire!”
“Yes sir!” Andrew and Buck yell, and Andrew begins the fire while Buck checks on Wynn.
“Where’re you hit, Pop?” Andrew heard from behind.
“I can’t believe I fucked up. My ass, sir,” Wynn replies. The man’s been shot and he thinks it’s his own damn fault.
“Your ass?”
His ass? How the hell did he manage to get shot in the ass?
Winters and Buck haul him out of the trench and give him his gun. Popeye can make it back, he’s sure of it.
As Andrew keeps the covering fire, Buck drops his grenade.
“Grenade!” Buck shouts, and Andrew jumps out, back towards Popeye.“Toye! Get out of there!”
Except, Joe’s not out of there. Andrew’s heart drops as it goes off. Buck’s the first one back in there, to check on him, but Toye’s there, alive.
“Jesus Christ, fucking twice,” Toye says and Andrew can’t help but laugh.
“You lucky bastard!” Andrew laughs out. “Fucking twice!”
Approaching the second gun, no one expected any of the Germans to be alive after Buck popped another grenade into one of the fox holes.
“Nicht schiessen. Bitte, nicht schiessen. No make dead!” The soldier shouts at Toye, but to no avail. None of them know German. Would fucking kill to have Lieb here right now, Andrew thinks. He knows German, he can speak it too. Tell him enough to just shut the fuck up.
“Shut up,” Toye tells him, but the German doesn’t listen.
“Nicht schiessen. Nicht schiessen.”
“Shut the fuck up!” Toye points his gun at the German, which just makes him even more terrified.
“No make dead, no make dead-“
Joe finally decides to shut him up by punching him with his brass knuckles. How the hell did he keep those on the jump?
“Hey, Toye,” Andrew says. “Our goal is to kill Germans, not knock them the fuck out.”
“Got him to shut up, didn’t it?”
Andrew couldn’t argue with that.
As Andrew and Toye go back to covering fire, Andrew sees something truly bizarre come up from the trenches. It’s enough to make the Germans stop their fire.
It’s Malarkey, out in No Man’s Land, looking for something on the German’s. He’s checking their sidearms.
That man wants a goddamn Luger.
“He’s gonna get himself killed,” Andrew says. “He’s gonna get himself killed over a Luger.
Andrew swears he can hear Lieb yelling at Malarkey to come back, and he does, no sidearm in hand. Mission failed. Now get the fuck back here before the Germans realize who you are.
Malarkey rushes back, not a scratch on him, and he comes back around to the second gun with him and Andrew and Toye continue their covering fire. They’ve got to do it. Andrew feels the rush of a bullet pass over his head but he keeps firing. You have to. You’ve got no other choice.
Eventually, Andrew runs out of ammo. He looks around, frantically, trying to find something.
“Shit!” He shouts out before getting out his side arm. He’s got no other choice until someone finds something.
Andrew aims carefully and fires, hitting a German who just had his head a little too far out of the trenches. The man’s down — Andrew has either killed him or grazed him, but he’s down nonetheless.
No other Germans are up that far out. “Jesus, I need something, sir,” Andrew tells Winters.
“I’m trying, Marin!”
Like that, Sergeant Speirs was back with ammo, Some in his hand, some draped across his arms, but a good deal on his shoulders and neck. It was like he had raided the German’s supply house and took it all for himself.
“Winters, Hester said you needed ammo!” Speirs says, handing over some of it. “Mind if D Company takes a shot at the next gun?”
Winters nods and hands Andrew some ammo, but gives most of it to Malarkey to redistribute.
Andrew reloads and he’s back to his M-1, firing at the Germans.
He can only blink twice before Speirs has the first gun secured. What a hell of a man.
A bullet goes past — Andrew’s down into the ground. The wind’s knocked out of him and he’s looking around frantically. Everything is muddled, watered down. The pain is throbbing and white-hot and he can’t begin to think of where it’s coming from.
“Marin!” He hears someone shout — Lipton.
Lipton pulls Andrew up into a sitting position. Andrew can feel the warm wetness of blood trickling down into his ear and down the side of his neck. He reaches up and feels for his ear — it’s there, just not intact.
He blinks a few times. “I’m okay, I’m okay,” he reassures and grabs for his gun again. He can’t stop. The pain may hurt like a bitch but you can’t stop — nothing major was hit, so he has to keep going.
“Compton, police ‘em up, then pull out! Lorraine, Marin, Toye, move out!”
Andrew follows orders and he’s out and running back, M-1 in hand, like the rest of the men. Everyone’s still shouting, but it’s all a wet muddy pile of sound in one ear.
Lieb’s gonna kill you for this.
-
Andrew’s got his own little fire going and he’s “stew” out of an empty ammo box when Liebgott joins him. He’s cleaned up all the blood and discovered that a bit off the top of his left ear is missing. It’s not a lot, but it’s a hell of a lot more than a graze.
“I thought I told you not to get yourself killed, Drew.”
“You never said it,” Andrew replies, stirring the liquid in the box. “You looked it, though.”
“Same thing.”
“Not really, Lieb.”
“Andrew,” Liebgott says, making Andrew turn to face him. “I’m serious. If that bullet was just two centimeters to the right—“
“I know, Lieb, I know,” Andrew cuts him off. “You don’t think I’ve gone over the odds of it all myself?” Andrew pauses. “That Hall guy? He died, Lieb. I never got the chance to meet the Cowboy. Why do I get to live and he doesn’t?”
It’s quiet for a moment. Liebgott moves closer to Andrew, slipping his arm around the smaller man’s waist. He presses his forehead to Andrew’s.
“Promise me,” Liebgott says, “Promise me you’re not gonna die.”
“I promise,” Andrew replies, “If you don’t die either.”
“I promise.”
The kiss is soft, and Liebgott tastes like cigarettes and whatever alcohol he had in the douche and a half.
“Are you drunk, Lieb?” Andrew asks playfully.
“Nah, just a little bit of spirits to lighten the nerves is all,” Liebgott replies, pulling Andrew in closer. They kiss again, and Liebgott nibbles on Andrew’s lip before moving down and kissing along his jawline to his neck.
Andrew stifled a moan before he felt the little bit of a bite from Liebgott.
“Joe!” Andrew says, pulling away a bit. “You can’t leave any marks, we’ll get caught.”
There was that look in Liebgott’s eyes, one Andrew had seen a million times before. It was that sheer look of not caring, but now it was backed by a hunger, a deep want for more.
“I promise no one will see it,” Liebgott says before kissing Andrew again. Andrew nods and Lieb’s back to his neck, now unbuttoning the top of Andrew’s shirt. It’s just enough for Lieb to get to a spot that no one will see, and he’s quick about it too. Andrew’s back to buttoning his shirt back up in almost a minute.
“You’re a cheeky bastard, Lieb,” Andrew tells him, getting his food off of the fire.
“Not enough of a bastard to keep you from feeding me,” Liebgott says as Andrew pours some into Lieb’s mug.
“Oh yeah?” Andrew says, pulling away the ammo box. “Keep it up and see where that gets you.”
Andrew can’t tell if it’s a joke or not, but Lieb goes back for Andrew’s neck, kissing it one last time.
“Joseph Liebgott, I swear to god, I’ll beat your ass.”
“I wanna see you try, Drew.”
Andrew hits his shoulder with a spoon and Liebgott laughs. The sound seems to carry through the Assembly Area, all around them. Despite the still muddled part of his ear where Andrew hadn’t gotten out all of the blood, the sound of Liebgott’s laugh was as clear as crystal.
It was almost enough to make you fall in love with him.

Humans Are Space Orcs “Preparations.”
I’m getting ready for an interesting new arc, I think, so we shall see. I never know what my brain is going  to want to write.
“Lieutenant, command is yours. Keep the ship operational till I get back. I want low orbit just in case we have to bail out quickly.”
“Yes sir.”
Boots clattered on metal as Commander Vir clattered down the stairs and moved quickly down the hallway. A small entourage of figures walked at his back, “I’m not sure I like this commander.” One of them was saying, “It could more than easily be a trap.”
He sighed, “I know, but the GA wants it done.”
“I would much rather do reconnaissance for a while-”
“And so would I, but the chairwoman made it very clear that we needed to speak with them as soon as possible. I’ve already tried establishing radio contact, and nothing. The only way to go now is the old fashioned way.”
They took a sharp corner, “Tell the council to meet me down in the docking bay.”
“Yes sir,” They scampered off leaving another subordinate to fill their place.
Most of the council was already there when he reached the docking bay. Dr, Krill, Sunny, Dr. Adric, Ramirez Narobi etc. etc.” He paused before them, hands clasped behind his back.
“You shouldn’t go alone.” Came the first announcement.
“Wouldn’t dream of it, which means I want at least six marines, and a group from the diplomacy team. I know I’ve been taking lessons, but I don’t trust myself nearly as much as I trust them.”
“Are we sure it needs to be you at all?” Krill pointed out getting to the heart of the issue on first try, as was usual for him.
Commander Vir turned to look at the little doctor on the spot, “The Kree have demanded a high ranking representative.”
“Then lie to them, send down someone not important and pretend,” Krill said
He crossed his arms, “We aren’t going to lie. Starting out diplomatic relations with a lie would destabilize the entire foundation of what we are trying to build, no we need proper protection is all.” He turned to look at the others, “Any objections? If so raise your concerns now?’”
Sunny raised a hand, “You're Not going unless you bring proper weapons, otherwise, I say we shouldn't meet them.”
“I agree….. And I have an idea.” The group looked nervously around at each other, “No, you are very much not going to like it, and you will probably argue with me.” He turned to Dr. Adric, and motioned hi to follow, “Ramirez get your marines and-”
“Already done commander.”
“Nice and fast of you.” He turned to look at Ramirez one last time placing a hand on his shoulder, “Are these the marines that have…. Uh…. trained with the new equipment?”
Ramirez  nodded enthusiastically, “Yes sir.”
“Good.” “New equipment?” Krill wondered rather suspiciously.
“Yep you're going to hate that too.” Commander Vir announced knowing that he was going to argue and knowing that people would assume his decision was poor. But he had talked it over -- seriously -- with Ramirez, and they had both agreed it was too good a strategic advantage not to. Ramirez had then talked with the requisitions officer and so on and so forth until the package had been loaded onto the ship not a few days before, but that he thought he might be able to get away with, it was this next thing, they were going to hate.
Floating at the back of the group Conn knew what he was thinking, “They’re going to lock you up.”
“Are you exaggerating, or is that seriously what they are going to do?”
The starborn kept silent  leaving hi on edge as he moved forward and into the equipment room. He knew where it was, they had hardly hidden it as well as they thought they had, and he could tell by the nervous movement of the rest of the crew that they knew too.
Ight as well not keep them waiting.
He walked over to one side of the room, pushed a rack of guns out of the way, reached down and dragged the large silver box onto the open floor.
Immediate uproar.
“No!”
“Not on your life!: “What are you thinking!”
Commander Vir crossed his arms, planting himself before the box with feet spread wide. He let them continue to rant, sunny even tried to pull hi away, but he ducked past both of her arms and stepped back, so he was now standing on the box.
“QUIET ALL OF YOU!”
That made them shut up, at least for the moment.
“Commander, we won’t let you.”
“I know.”
“Than why even bother bringing it up.” Sunny demanded
Even Ramirez was looking a little put off..
He turned to look at Dr. Adric, “That is why he is here. I know for a fact that I can do it, and not cause harm to myself. I’m healthy enough mentally to manage, but if the good doctor decides that I am wrong, than I will put it down and stp arguing.”
Below him, the Iron eye logo glinted in the yellowed overhead lights.
Dr. Adric looked on in concern, “What is this about?”
Krill and a few of the others turned to protest, but commander Vir stopped them with a raised hand turning to look at the doctor, “You are aware of my time in operation steel eye?”
He nodded.
“And were you aware that I put the armor back on for the burg war not some months ago?”
“Yes.”
“Do you know about the project.”
He laced his hands together before him, “I published a paper on it. I know that it was a volatile experimental pice of technology that the government attached  directly into the spinal columns and muscles of the forty surviving soldiers. Each machine was powered by the steel eye prosthetic which contained the suit’s power source. I know that they used drugs to stop the excruciating pain, and that they added amphetamines to cause aggression and allow the soldiers to stay up longer…. And I know that more than three fourths of those soldiers are dead now and only have of that fourth is….. Operating functionally as people.”
Commander Vir smiled, “Yes, than you do know. IT took me years to recover from the suit, than I went and put it on again, and that caused a relapse in y mental health to a degree that I almost got myself grounded and , likely, discharged. However, during that time I also spoke to a group of people who were working on a similar project, operation Iron eye.” There was a nervous shifting around the room, “ITs the same thing as stell eye, though it requires no drugs, and no pain. The Trade off is, I had to go in for surgery because the attachments are permanent.”
He turned around and pulled down the collar of his shirt so Dr. Adric could see the first port just below the base of his skull, “I had these done at a time where I honestly shouldn't have, but I thought this was my only option.” He turned back around, “I am well aware that is not true, but what’s done is done. I have the implants, they cannot be removed, and I have the suit. I might as well use it to protect myself. That is the point? To protect myself and the rest of the crew?”
There was silence for a moment.
“We can’t let you do this.” Dr Katie was saying.
Narobi was shaking her head emphatically .
He turned to look at Dr. Adric, “I leave this decision up to you doc. If I’m not mentally healthy enough to handle it, than I will stop, but you are the expert here and the most unbiased among us.” Dr Adric shifted on the spot nervously. He could see where this was a problem. The unhealthy associations that soldiers were bound to make after an experience like that was…. Horrible to imagine, but the Commander seemed calm, so he supposed there was no issue with trying.
He was a bit nervous about all the eyes that his decision caused. Sunny looked like she was about to beat him to death with her spear, and Dr. Krill seemed intent on poisoning his drink the next time he had the chance.
They took the Iron eye box back to the medical bay, and The three doctors observed the process.
Commander Vir was feeling pretty good as he slid back into the box listening to the connections click into place. Were there some bad memories? Yeah, sure, but he could handle those well enough.
Dr Adric kept a close eye on him as he stood the whirring of hydraulics accompanying his movement. He flexed his fist inside the iron eye suit and turned to look at the others.
Krill was frowning. Sunny was glowering , Dr. Katie wouldn't even look at him. Ramirez looked very, very nervous.
Dr. Adric walked over and checked his pulse, asked a few questions, but finally decided there was no reason to tell him no.
That pissed off almost everyone else in the room, but commander Vir pulled on the specially made iron eye gear, “You wanted me safe, and this is as safe as I can think of being, and I trust Dr. Adric’s judgement.” With each footstep, metal clattered against metal, and the soft hiss of the hydraulics accompanied him up the hall.
THe others followed in concern and anger.
The crew turned to look their eyes wide looking nervous.
They expected him to do something stupid.
What they didn’t know is that he actually had a practicing mental health professional on his side now, and truth be told, he didn’t feel anything really. Yes he could just as easily compare the experience to the steel-eye suit, but without the pain, the experiences were too different.
Reaching the docking bay for the second time. The marines were already waiting as were the diplomacy team.
Dr Krill cursed, “You arent serious.”
“Krill, I appreciate your opinion as a doctor, but in areas of equipping marines, I trust Ramirez more.”
The line of marines saluted as he drew nearer, their bodies covered by their combat ACUs, and each one wearing a matte black painted jetpack.
He turned, just in time for Ramirez to step forward with another, mounting it to the back plate on the Iron- eye suit, where it clicked satisfyingly into place.
Krill and Sunny both looked as if they were about  to have a conniption.
He withdrew something from his pocket, “Don’t worry, I did my homework, and read the manual. I don’t plan on even using it if this all goes well.” he looked at the group of them seriously, “This isn’t for fun, everyone, this is for the safety and protection of myself and others. I have a panic button ready in case anything goes wrong, and I will have two more teams of marines on standby in low orbit in case something decides to happen. I have the diplomacy team to speak when I don’t know what to do, and I have the marines for a firefight if it comes to that. THe first sign of trouble and we fly out if we have to.”
He stepped forward a bit, looking around at the concerned and angry faces, “I understand you all are worried, but I have thought this through. I have taken your suggestions, and I am doing everything I can to stay safe.” He looked up at Sunny, “I will be equipped in the way that you suggested.” he turned to Krill and Katie, “We have the medical supplies that you ordered in the bags that were placed in the ready room.”
He turned to Narobi, “You sent in one of your best people to service all of the equipment days ago. I, and these men are as safe as we can be.”
Maybe one day he wouldn't have to explain his actions to these people, but he understood that, in the past he had made a bunch of poor decisions. This time would not be that time. He had thought of everything, and he had talked to everyone else to consider things he hadn’t thought of. He was listening to his crew, and differing to the knowledge of experts. He didn’t pick the team, he didn’t pick the equipment, and he was going to allow the knowledge of others to carry through this time.
Yes, one day he would be able to make a decision without explaining everything, but today was not that day.
He looked around, “Are there any objections?” He held up a hand to cut Krill off, “On the basis of logic and not being angry at me?”
Krill shut his mouth.
One of the floor technicians jogged up, “The shuttle is ready commander.”
He nodded and turned to the marines, “Load up!” He then turned and ordered a second pilot onto the ship so as not to leave it unmanned when they were gone.
In the confusion, he turned to head towards the ship, but something caught his hand.
He turned and looked up to find Sunny’s golden eyes staring down at him. He could tell she was mad, displeased, and even a little hurt, though she didn’t say any of that.
The one day he thought he had made no mistakes…. And he had.
He looked around quickly, and seeing no one paying attention, he took one of her other hands.
The Iron eye armor impeded a good connection but it would have to do, “I’ll talk to you when I get back.”
SHe remained quiet.
“I know…. I should have told you, and you can kick my ass later, ok?”
His smile fell from his face as she continued to glower.
He squeezed her hands, “Back before you can say Adam is a dipshit.” He squeezed one more time and let go turning towards the shuttle and flexing his shoulders with a hydraulic hiss , the iron eye clattering hungrily with every movement

The Artist is Absent
If I tell you about what I did yesterday, you do what? You take a bunch of sights, sounds, tastes, smells from your experience and stick them together in your head into a complex picture of my experience? Well, that’s what I’m doing when I use my memory. I don’t have a prefab image of what’s happened to me in my life that I break down into pieces when I describe it to you; the act of remembering is building up from pieces, reconstructing reality from a mass of tiny sensations, and all a memory is is a set of instructions for which ones to assemble and how. This act is performed every time a thing is remembered. And the difference between my memory and your imagination is that, having lived it, I have way more sense memories than I could ever communicate, and the knowledge that mine actually happened to me. Those are really the only differences; you could characterize memory as “imagining things that actually happened,” or imagination as “remembering things that didn’t.”
The Artist is Absent 2
OK, quickie sidebar on what the meaning of “meaning” is in this context. I don’t want anyone to trip over this term and think I’m saying all art is part of some grand design, like I’m going to argue The Avengers is an allegory for the Bay of Pigs or something. I’m not using “meaning” in a lofty sense. If you wanna argue that the only substance to The Avengers is “it’s fun,” that’s cool. That’s still a meaning, but it’s perfectly valid if that’s all there is to it.
...I mean, that’s not all there is to it, it’s also about family, and about how being in a family with people who are different from you can make you a better person. It can teach you the value of selflessness, or the value of compassion over mercenary coldness, or the value of accepting yourself and your flaws, or help you fit your idealism into the modern world, or… deliver exposition, because Thor doesn’t have an arc in this movie.
But you see my point! All I mean by “meaning” is that there is an answer to the question, “Why does this exist?” If someone made it, they had to have a reason, anything from “I wanted to change the world” to “I wanted to make money” to “I was bored.” Those aren’t all great answers, but they’re answers.
Also, all creators exist within their culture, which means their works are products of that culture, and their contents will either reflect or differ from that culture’s values. Like, the fact that all the central characters in The Avengers save one are white, and all save one are men, means something. We can debate the whats and wherefores of that meaning and how much that meaning matters, but since things like race, gender, the military, and New York City, mean things to our society, they can’t not mean things in our movies.
And, let’s be honest: following The Avengers, Tony has PTSD from being a rescue worker during Something Very Bad that Happened in New York, and SHIELD dramatically expands the surveillance state and employs Cap in fighting terrorist threats, so, while not the Bay of Pigs, The Battle of New York is doing work as a 9/11 allegory. Both of these movies have been praised for exactly that.
But, let’s follow through: in our 9/11 allegory, the US government could not have possibly predicted nor prevented the bad Guys’ invasion, America is wholly innocent and has had no political or social impact on the Bad Guys, the Bad Guys are literally inhuman, and any amount of violence against them is justified, up to and including the Good Guys nuking them.
But whatever.
Bringing Back What’s Stolen
OK. A lot of psychoanalytic film writing comes from the 70’s, 80’s, and early 90’s, including gender analysis of horror films, and it can read a little Freudian: gender essentialist, heteronormative, and obsessed with the D. “Does this empowered woman look feminine? Well, she’s holding a gun, and I’ve got news for you: guns are penises. She’s smoking a cigarette, and cigarettes are penises. She’s wearing high heels, and high heels are penises. That slit in her dress that shows off her long legs? [Long Legs Are Penises]”
It’s a bit Second Wave-y. And not completely off-base! Like, I get it, Laura, sometimes a knife is a dick. (Symbolically, I mean.) But sometimes a stiletto is just a stiletto.
Bringing Back What’s Stolen 2
I want to stress that a trope does not define a character, and does not, alone, make her or the movie around her bad. I love a number of the characters I’ve cited. But when a movie, even a great movie, tells me, “Don’t worry, this woman is violent, but we’re not saying women at large are as strong or violent as men,” I feel condescended to. The lengths some movies go to soothe my ego, like I’m a seven-year-old who’s going to throw his toys against the wall, strike me as a big waste of time that could be spent on the more interesting parts of the movie. I’ll take another shootout any day.
WSGT3
Imagine you’re called onstage to do a cold reading of a two-person scene from a play you’ve never read. You don’t know the story, the characters, or even the stage directions. And the director hands out only one script to the other actor. You will have to improvise all your lines. The other actor knows the premise, knows the story, but they still need you to make the scene work. The person who knows what happens is trying to signal everything you need to you without straying from the script, while you attempt to discover your role in the story and perform it at the same time. That is the attention that must be paid. And, together, you try to make a story.
This is an exercise my acting teacher used to do with us, to get us listening to the other actors in a scene instead of just waiting for our cues. And this is how an adventure game feels.
DOOM
It was 1993, and we all knew about DOOM. It had a reputation. Many of us learned it existed with the same breath that forbid from playing it, in the same way we were forbidden from watching Beavis & Butt-head or Terminator 2. We didn’t have those kinds of parents. But most of us knew someone who did.
We came to learn three things about DOOM: that was intended for grown-ups, that our access to it was scarce, and that having not played meant getting teased by those who had. Some of us never asked if playing it interested us, we simply knew playing it was important.
And when we played - and we did play, on whatever computer someone had secreted the shareware version onto - it was like nothing we’d ever seen before. Amazing and terrifying, in the way that a kid alone in the house watching their first skin flick finds it shocking, because half-naked women and simulated sex are so far outside their limited experience. We had never seen anything close to this, and it unsettled us at first. But we played.
The titillation of an art student drawing a nude model lasts for the few moments between the dropping of the robe and the touching of charcoal to paper. Then nakedness becomes just another series of lines to render. We acclimated. When we fired our shotguns into an enemy, soon enough all we saw was an obstacle neutralized. We saw a series of lines elegantly intersecting a series of boxes. That’s not what our parents saw. Our parents saw an imp howling in pain as its ribcage burst from its chest.
And so part of playing DOOM became learning how to defend it. “I play DOOM for the gameplay” became a generation’s “I read Playboy for the articles.” When we got caught, we tried to explain the the lines and the boxes: The bullet wounds were just there to let you know when you’d hit your target. The space marine’s bleeding face was just there to tell at a glance how your health was doing. The enemies were Satanic hellspawn just to make it perfectly clear their function was to be dispatched by your shotgun. What we wouldn’t say was that all these things could be accomplished through other means, without blood, but we didn’t want to play Chex Quest.
What we couldn’t put into words, most especially under threat of punishment, was that, while the blood and gore wasn’t why we wanted to keep playing, it was usually why we sat down in the first place. DOOM was good, but being good wasn’t what made it important; it was important because it was illicit. Yes, we were kids, and we probably would play a game that offered us nothing but brutal violence, but if the lines didn’t pleasingly intersect the boxes we would soon stop playing. DOOM is loved today because there was more to it than that. Blood was captivating, but it wasn’t enough - we sat down, but we did not stay, for blood alone. What our parents could rarely put into words was that us no longer seeing the blood was part of what worried them.
Indivisible Talk
These are some fundamentals I want you to keep in mind as we look at the Right.
Everybody’s people. When I talk about the difference between the Right and the Left, I’m not saying “the Right does this and the Left does that.” I’m talking about things all humans do, and the difference between the Right and the Left is a matter of scale and proportion. If I say “the Left values data over gut feelings” or “the Right values family over extended community,” obviously everyone values all of those things. It’s a question of how they’re prioritized. But small differences in our priorities can lead to dramatically different worldviews. So when I say “the Right does X,” don’t get too hung up on whether the Left also sometimes does X, but try think about how it manifests on the Right versus the Left and what those differences between them mean.
People vote their beliefs, not their self-interest. The Left tends to ask things like, “Why would working-class voters who depend on Obamacare vote for the party that wants to repeal Obamacare? They must have been lied to.” And I won’t deny that a lot of lies were involved, but it’s a mistake to think people only vote for what’s good for them. It seems like this should be obvious; I mean, why do I vote to have my taxes raised to pay for someone else’s education, someone else’s food stamps? We tend to answer that by arguing it is in my self-interest, that a well-fed and well-educated population leads to a stronger economy and a richer culture, and that this will trickle down to make my life better in the long run, and I could make that case, but, really, that’s not why I do it. I believe in education, I believe in fighting poverty, and if you proved to me that neither would ever benefit me personally, I would still fight for them, because it’s the right thing to do. So when someone across the political spectrum does something that confuses us, it may be true that they are misinformed, but we can’t assume that simply correcting them will change their minds. Right or wrong, they are acting in accordance with their beliefs, they trust misinformation because it aligns with those beliefs, and, if you don’t understand what those beliefs are, you’re going to misdiagnose the problem.
Tolerance and sectarianism. A tolerant view of society is the melting pot, the idea that Real America is the combination of many different walks of life, all of which are valid and deserving of the same rights. A sectarian view thinks of one walk of life (usually one’s own) as the Real America, and this walk of life is one society should trend towards: that America is a Christian nation, English should be the national language, or the ideal family as nuclear and heterosexual. I think it’s obvious which ways the Parties lean.
But, again, these are human traits. Everyone is balancing both these impulses every day. And I don’t want us to split these into “tolerant good, in-groups bad.” Democrats who over-commit to the melting pot run into the Karl Popper’s Paradox of Tolerance: that, if you treat every group as equally valid, including Nazis, fascists, and the Klan, you create a less tolerant society. And treating one group as a greater priority than others is logical when that group is persecuted; there is a degree to which all minority activism is defending one’s family. So it’s a matter of knowing when to be tolerant and when to be familial, and coalition-building is all about being both at the same time.
End
Um. So. I’m not sure how to end this. Uh. 200k subs! Wow! I find that number very humbling. Thank you all so much. And back me on Patreon, if you want to and if you haven’t already. There’ll be a proper video soon. Uh. What do people usually do in these things, they do Q&A’s, right? People ask you “what’s your favorite movie, book, game, comic, anime, musical, poem, album, joke”? I’ve been wondering what it says about me that all my answers would be things I experienced in my 20s, or earlier. Is it that I don’t love things the way I used to? Or is it just that, the more art you experience, the harder it is to be blown away? Like, something can be better than anything I’ve seen before, but it can’t shatter the record the way it could when I was younger. But I’m not making a video essay about that, so: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Motion of Light in Water by Samuel R. Delany, LOOM, Sandman, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, A Woman is Talking to Death by Judy Grahn, a three-way tie between In The Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel, Lincoln by They Might Be Giants, and Onomatopoeia by Jonny 5, and the lemon cookie joke.

Disney+ UK Star Launch: Complete List of New TV Shows and Films
https://ift.tt/2P7STsN
We came for The Mandalorian, stuck around for WandaVision, and, as we wait for The Falcon and Winter Soldier and Loki to arrive, there’s now a huge pile of new catalogue additions to work through, courtesy of Disney Plus’ Star brand.
Star launched on the Disney Plus streaming service in territories outside of the US (where Disney already has a home for adult drama in Hulu) on the 23rd of February. It’s added over 75 TV shows and 280 feature films here in the UK, including the entirety of Lost, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, Glee, Prison Break, Sons of Anarchy and Scrubs as well as cult favourites Firefly, Flashforward, Terriers and more. There are also some UK debuts in the form of the Star Originals listed below.
Film-wise, there’s ample reason to go back to the 90s in the form of Arachnophobia, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Con Air and a host of others, plus…well, it’s almost 300 films. Chances are you’ll find something to tickle your fancy. Households with kids should know there are new parental controls to set too, ensuring that nobody gets any unwelcome surprises.
Here’s the complete list of titles so far:
Star Originals
Big Sky
From Mr TV himself, David E. Kelley (Doogie Howser, Chicago Hope, Ally Mcbeal, Big Little Lies) comes a nine-part crime thriller starring Ryan Philippe and Vikings‘ Katheryn Winnick. Based on the 2013 novel The Highway by C.J. Box, Big Sky is the story of a series of missing girls and a private detective/cop trio with a messy personal history who team up to find them. It aired on ABC in the US last winter.
Helstrom
There’s very little fanfare for this comic book show‘s UK debut, which met with mostly negative reviews on release and was cancelled after 10 episodes, but Marvel completists will want to take a look. Tom Austen and Sidney Lemmon play the Helstrom siblings Daimon and Satana, the children of serial killers who hunt down the worst of humanity.
Love, Victor
Another Hulu original making its UK debut, this teen drama spins off from celebrated gay teen 2018 film Love, Simon. It’s narrated by Nick Robinson, who played Simon in the original film, and follows the story of a Puerto-Rican/Colombian-American teen living in Atalanta. Reviews for the 10-part first season were strong and it’s been renewed for a second.
Solar Opposites
Rick and Morty‘s Justin Roiland and Star Trek: Lower Decks‘s Mike McMahan are the creators of this adult animated comedy series about a family of aliens (pictured above) forced to seek refuge in middle America. Season one was enthusiastically received, and a second run is due to air in the US in March. Read plenty more about it here.

My 2nd Ice Show Adventure (Fantasy On Ice 2017 in Niigata)
Tumblr media
Summer 2015, I went for my very 1st ice show, Fantasy On Ice (FaOI) in Kobe, and it was the 1st time I saw ‘nama-Yuzu’ (real-life Yuzuru) after being a fan since 2014 Olympics.
Summer 2016, I had tickets for FaOI again but this time, Yuzu pulled out of all ice shows to recover from lisfranc ligament injury, so I sold my ticket, prayed for Yuzu’s health and happiness, sent him letters of support, and managed to survive the terribly long off-season with other long-suffering Yuzu-fans.
This summer (2017), I am so busy with work projects that I have no time for fangirling, not to mention ice shows, and I moaned about it to a few friends. Almost like a miracle, one friend told me that if I wanted, she could get tickets for me for FaOI Niigata!  I decided I could get away for the weekend.  I must!
Tumblr media
The shows were on Friday, Saturday, Sunday (16-18 June) and it would be my first time in Niigata.  I took an ANA flight (yay! ANA!) and arrived in Niigata airport on Thursday.   The first meal I had was a very delicious bowl of ramen, and as I ate, I was surprised that I could taste bits of yuzu (the fruit).  I have never had ramen with yuzu before and so I was really happy!  It was really oiishiiiiiiiiii~~!!!  What a great omen, I thought.  My first meal on this trip was with yuzu. xD
On this 1st night, there was something else that made me think of Yuzu.... I saw Bourbon ice-cream!  “Mo chotto”!
Tumblr media
I was way too full from the huge bowl of ramen and so I did not buy ‘Mo Chotto’ ice-cream to try.  Thought I’d try it another day but I did not pass by this shop again and I could not find it anywhere else.  Sigh.  Regret.  The snack is common but the ice-cream is not.
Friday 16 June (ice show is at 7pm, doors open at 6pm)
In the morning, I changed hotel.  Checked into ANA Crowne Plaza (yay, ANA!) because it’s a short walk to the ice show venue.  A Yuzu-fan friend, D-chan, messaged to say she is nearby and asked me to join her for coffee.  OK!   It was a lovely breezy walk from ANA hotel to an area called Pier Bandai and I found her in a cosy little coffee place with comfy sofas.  I ordered an iced coffee and we chatted away.  “I can’t believe I’m really here....”  “He’s somewhere near us now, you know....”  “Omg we’re breathing the same air as him....”   xD
Happiness is talking with a Yuzu-fan while sipping coffee in Japan. :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Soon it was time to meet another friend, Kay, the wonderful person who got my tickets for me.  We had plans for an early dinner together and then go for the ice show.  I met her at Niigata Station and we walked around looking for food. Some restaurants were not yet opened for dinner as it was too early. Luckily there was a soba shop that was open and we both felt like eating soba, so in we went.  (soba= buckwheat noodles)
Tumblr media
We ordered their specialty which was soba dipped in a warm broth with tender slices of pork.  And once again, I had the lovely surprise of finding yuzu in it!   I really love the citrusy fragrance it gave to the soupy noodles.  We felt so happy eating soba with yuzu.  It was a very good meal. :)
From Niigata station, there was a shuttle bus to the show venue, running pretty frequently.  (I really love Japan;  they think of everything.) There was no real need to look for the bus-stop, just look for the long queue!  Luckily, it was a short wait as the buses came quickly and soon we were on our way to Toki Messe!   Just a 10-minute bus ride and we were there, a lovely glassy tall building by the river.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were early but the queue for FaOI merchandise was already VERY LONG. It’s ok, let’s admire the pretty Tanabata decorations and chit-chat while we wait in line.  Finally we could at least SEE the sale counter!  It’s going to be our turn!  I got a T-shirt, a towel and the programme booklet.  So happy to get the towel because 2 years ago at FaOI Kobe, the towel was sold out before it was my turn, on the very 1st day!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then Kay pointed out to me something that made me very happy.... Ice Rink Sendai merchandise counter!  I have not had the chance to buy anything from Yuzu’s hometown rink before, so I hurried towards it excitedly.  Wow, they really have a lot of pretty things!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The photo of Yuzu wearing ‘Irene gloves’ was there.  (Irene is short for ‘Ice Rink Sendai’ and is the name of the mascot.)  And also his signature with a message saying “I will never forget, I will continue to do my best and give my support.” (my translation from Japanese)   And there is a little mushroom at the end. ^^
Tumblr media
What a simple but heartwarming message for his hometown rink....
I bought the ‘Irene’ gloves, T-shirt, keychain and some stationery.  I love the pink theme!
Tumblr media
There were also stalls selling really beautiful books and magazines..... I want them all!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Glad we were early.  It was hard to take a good look at the stalls when it got very crowded later.
I was also very amused to see a counter that rented out binoculars, haha.  I did not rent one on the 1st day, but I did for the next 2 days.  Best decision ever.  I could see clearly all his cute facial expressions and who he was talking to all the time at the finale.  (Guess who. :))
Tumblr media
And of course, there were big boxes for fan letters and gifts to skaters.  Yuzu’s box filled up quickly and the inner bag had to be changed several times by the staff.  I used my new Irene stationery to write 2 fan letters (one on behalf of the FB international fan group and one from myself) and dropped them into the box on the 2nd day.  On the 3rd day, I decided to also drop a letter into Oda-san’s box.  I told him I enjoy his skating, his talk shows and his blog, thanked him for his great friendship with Yuzu, and may God bless his beautiful family. :)
Tumblr media
After all the excitement outside, it’s time to go in.  The seating arena for Niigata is smaller than some other places, so even the furthest row was not that far away.  I was somewhere in the middle, nearer one end of the rink.
Tumblr media
As usual, there were guys in black jackets who walk around holding up big signs that say “No taking of photos or videos”.  (I took this pic before the show, no pics during the show.  Law-abiding fan.)
The show started and the skaters were introduced one or two at a time.  Yuzu was the last one to come out and the applause and cheers for him were huge.  It was clear who the star of the show was. :)
After the opening number, the skaters did their individual performances.  I enjoyed watching all of them.  My favourite ones were the 2 performances by Nobunari Oda -- the music was beautiful for both and I love to watch his jumps;  it’s like he lands on marshmallow (once again I am reminded of why they gave him that T-shirt saying ‘landing with cat’s feet’);  Sex Bomb by Plushenko was hilarious and I laughed so much;  and Shizuka Arakawa-- what supreme grace and beauty.
Ice dancers Papadakis and Cizeron were very beautiful to watch. So glad they performed in this FaOI.  The acrobatic duo of 2 men in Swan Lake tutu performing ‘Notte Stellata’ was very funny.  I have seen Yuzu perform to this song so beautifully so many times in the past season (and watched it live at 4CC) and now this exact same song is skated in such a comical way..... I was so tickled. xD
For the record, the other skaters were Kaori Sakamoto, Marin Honda, Akiko Suzuki, Miki Ando, Shoma Uno, Evgenia Medvedeva, Denis Vasiljevs, Javier Fernandez, Elladj Balde, Johnny Weir, Stephane Lambiel, Jeffrey Buttle and the Chesnas.  Many of them performed twice, before and after the intermission.  Much thanks to all for their wonderful performances!
At the end was Yuzu’s Chopin Ballade Number 1.  I had the good fortune of watching this 2 years ago, at the last show of FaOI 2015, when he gave us a surprise performance with live piano music played by Kotaro Fukuma.  At that time, he did the 2nd half of his usual Chopin, in a black FaOI finale shirt. It was awesome. So this time, I was really excited that I would see the full performance with that beautiful white Chopin top. And wow.... he really took my breath away. Although I have watched him perform Chopin for 2 seasons already, it felt like a different Chopin. It was the same and yet it was different. More beautiful, more powerful, more flow, more speed, more precision.... it was already so perfect, how can it be even better, but it is!  (based on my ‘expert’ opinion.)   I am so thrilled that he is doing this for the new season! I LOVE Chopin!
After Chopin, he went backstage to dry his sweat and then came out again to do an encore of ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ (his SP for last season). It was funny to watch LGC performed in that sweet Chopin costume. So mismatched, haha.
For the finale, Yuzu came out in a glittery blue FaOI top with a cat ears-hair band on his head. He danced in the group number and even did a cartwheel on the ice!  And he waved happily to all of us. It was so good to see him enjoying himself. I am very glad he did not do any quad battles at the end. He just did a side lunge for the 1st show (with one under a set of hurdles, so amazing!), a hydroblade for the 2nd show, and a ‘muscle man’ pose with Plushenko at the last show. And when others are doing their jumps or special elements in the middle of the rink, he would skate from his original position to the space between his idol Plushenko and good buddy Nobu. And he was often talking to Plush. Ahhh... Yuzu, still the cute fan-boy after all these years. :)))
After the finale, when all the other skaters have left the rink, Yuzu took a mic and spoke to thank all of us. He said things like please take care of yourselves, take care as you go home, have a meal, have a good rest, who is staying on for tomorrow’s show? oh that’s quite a lot of you (laughs), thank you for your support, I really enjoyed myself, eh to, eh to, there is still so much that I want to say, but never mind, it is already very late, I should stop here, I really want to thank all of you for today....... And he would end by putting the mic down and shouting as loudly as he could with his own voice “Arigato gozaimashita!”
Listening to him speak was just wonderful.... I was touched by his concern for his fans and also half-laughing at some things he said. He wanted to talk more but he did not want to hold us back as it was already way past 10pm on that 1st night. That dear talkative boy. :) Oh Yuzu, your fans would listen to you all night, if only we could. But then we want you to rest too! You need a good rest and a good meal more than us!
In his speech for the 2nd day, he also thanked the people who made the ice rink.  He said the ice was very good to skate on and they all loved skating there. Yuzu and his grateful heart. :)
On that 2nd day, I was seated at the other end, where the stage was.  (I took this pic as I was leaving.)  When he was speaking, he was standing on the left of the stage just outside the ice.  I had a very clear side view of him through my binoculars ( I was halfway up the stands).  His face was sweaty but dazzling with happiness as he spoke.  How I wish I was sitting this close!
Tumblr media
The shows for Saturday and Sunday were at 2 pm and 1pm respectively.
Most skaters performed the same programmes for all 3 shows in Niigata but a few skaters did a different one for one of the shows. Like Marin Honda, for the 2nd show, she performed in a very cute Japan Airlines air stewardess costume. Elladj Balde was the skater before Marin (he did a great Michael Jackson medley) and when he finished his performance, he skated to one end with his chair and just sat there. Marin skated out in her JAL costume, went to him and said in Japanese, “Sir, would you like some coffee or tea?” Haha, that was how she started and I really enjoyed her performance.  For the other 2 days, she did ‘Crime Tale’.   Javier also had a different one in the 2nd show;  instead of his new SP, it was a funny pirate one where he was a cleaner-boy daydreaming. Johnny Weir performed ‘Amazing Grace’ in the 2nd half for the 1st 2 days, then on the 3rd day, he did a song called ‘Creep’.  His performance was so heart-wrenching, I almost cried.  I can still feel the pain he expressed even now when I think back..... Johnny’s skating is really very special. No wonder he is one of the skaters that Yuzu has looked up to since junior days.
In the 3rd show, which was the last FaOI show for 2017, Yuzu had some surprises for us.
After performing Chopin, he went backstage as usual, and the rink was dark. As with the previous 2 shows, we waited a while and then started to call his name. “Yuzu, Yuzu....” The MC said we have to shout his name louder because he can’t hear us. So we shouted “YUZU!” as loudly as we could, expecting him to appear for the LGC encore. Suddenly, the sounds of an electric guitar filled the air. There was a guitarist on stage and he was playing ‘Parisienne Walkways’!!!! We recognised it immediately and the fan beside me turned to me with eyes as big as saucers. She grabbed my hand and we started screaming and jumping about, mad with excitement! Yuzu then skated out to all our screams and did his legendary PW wearing his Chopin costume (he did the 2nd half of the usual PW programme). Oh wow!!! What a surprise! What a treat!!! Yuzu's PW with live guitar!!! I felt like the luckiest fan in the world!!!
After that amazing encore, he went backstage and the finale started. The other skaters came out in turns to do the group number. When Yuzu came out again for his part in the finale, we all went hysterical again! Because he was wearing a yellow headband with Pooh ears!! Hahaha...... this guy really knows how to make his fans scream. He looked so adorable! It was wonderful to see him looking so happy and enjoying himself so much. (Later, I saw a Japanese fan on twitter say the Pooh headbands were all sold out. But of course. The Yuzuru-effect. XD)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(2 pics above are fans’ screenshots of a TV news segment on FaOI.)
Then at the very end of the show, when the other skaters have left the rink, he gave a very emotional speech and made me cry.  He said that last year he could not do anything (no ice shows at all due to injury), so now he is feeling very happy to be back doing this and he loves skating and he is feeling most blessed and he is the happiest person in the world. (*may not be the exact words but the meaning is such.)  And he thanked the organisers and other people and all of us.  It was not so much the words he said but the way he said them. There were so much emotions. His voice trembled a bit at the beginning. It sounded like he was tearing and was trying to control himself not to cry. As he spoke, his feelings were just gushing out...... he was just so utterly happy and grateful for everything!
Then he did the usual ending-shout;  he put down the mic, cupped his hands near his mouth and shouted "arigato-gozaimashita!", and we all shouted back "arigato-gozaimashita!"  And then he bowed and waved and went in through the curtains.
Tears were running down my face. I continued to say softly, "Arigato, Yuzu-kun, arigato."  Thank you, Yuzu, thank you.  My tears just kept flowing as I thought back.  After going through so much... so much..... he is finally where he is supposed to be.......
Seeing Yuzu so happy and healthy is one of the best things in the world.
I met Kay after the show and we talked about how special Yuzu is.  And how is it that he can make us fly thousands of miles to watch him perform just those few minutes and we feel it’s so worth our time, money and energy.  She would be flying home that night, and for me, my flight home was the next day.  As with all good things, it ended too quickly but our hearts were filled to overflowing.
I am very grateful to Kay for her help with tickets and for her fun company.  We met up every day and ate some very delicious food together.  On the 2nd day after the show, we walked around and found a little ramen shop to have dinner.  And again there was yuzu in it!!!  (See the little yellow strips on top of the soup?)  Kay also ordered a yuzu sparkling wine.  I had a sip and it was lovely!   Another meal with yuzu.... ahhh life is good. :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the last night after the ice show, I shopped for stuff like P&G Bold clothes detergent, Lenor clothes deodoriser and softener, Ghana chocolate and Xylitol gum.  I was so happy to find all these things near my hotel, and after I lugged my heavy shopping back to my hotel room, I realised I had forgotten to buy rice! Niigata is famous for very good rice and I had wanted to buy a small bag of rice home. :((  I messaged Kay to lament and she replied, it’s ok, he is not the ambassador for rice.  Hahaha..... I love Yuzu-fans.  (I did manage to get a bag of rice before I left for the airport the next day. :) )
Yuzu-fans are really wonderful and generous.  And just like Yuzu, they surprise me all the time.  On the 2nd night, D-chan passed a package to me from a fan that I don’t even know.  Inside were some Japanese newspapers and advertisements with Yuzu, and also ‘Weekend Sendai’!!!  OMG I nearly fainted with happiness.  (Weekend Sendai is a free travel magazine given out in Japan many months back.  Yuzu is featured inside recommending food and places in Sendai. 1st pic below, left side.)   Gosh, how did she know it’s something I had been coveting for ages now???  I told D-chan to give her my utmost gratitude.  And thank you, D-chan, for being a good friend and messenger!  So glad I met you on this trip!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another fan gave me gorgeous photos of Yuzu that she had taken herself at competitions.  And she said, “Thank you for the good work that you do in the fan group.”  Aww..... I was so touched!   Thank you, CL!
Tumblr media
I was so happy when I was packing my luggage on the last night in Niigata.  I had so many precious goodies in my bag!   Thank you, dear Yuzu-fans!!!  Hope to see you all again!
Below are pics of my FaOI tee, towel and booklet that I bought on Day 1.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There is so much more that I want to say, but this is already so long, I should stop here now.  Dear Yuzu, thank you for everything!!!  May God bless you and your family.  Always supporting you and hope to see you again soon!
Tumblr media
Note: This is written one month after the event due to being too busy at work.  If any details of FaOI are incorrect, I am sorry for my bad memory. :P

Nerding day

Where’s my damn primer! I can’t go without the primer! Oh, here it is! Here we go: I’m ready to leave for a nerding day! It’s been a while since last time.
Just a quick post here because I want to get painting as soon as I can. You know, being a family man means you get a lot of satisfaction from being with your beloved ones but you also inevitably end up with less free time for yourself. However, yesterday my wife being the lovely person she is, let me go out for a nerding day. What is it? Easy! It’s one of those days where you get back to your 18s and you basically get to do whatever you want. I’m talking about hobby related stuff of course. I didn’t get to paint much but it was still a lot of fun.
I left home in the early afternoon with my painting gear and headed to Osaka Warhammer store. The plan was to go there with a colleague of mine that wants to dive into the hobby but he canceled on Friday so I just decided to go to the shop and have some good time. You never know… I may end up learning something new or even teaching something to someone or taking somebody in the hobby. As I said, you never know what may happen. I’m a firm believer in the fact that small actions can have a huge influence on people around you so getting a lot of different people in the same room is always something interesting to do. That’s why I packed my death guard, the base colors I use on them and went to my FLGS.
Painting
I was able to only spend a couple hours painting in the shop while waiting for my friend Matt. I base coated my shiny new Typhus model while picking up the last details on a plague marine. So now I have two fully painted marines! Forty more to go! And it only took me 2 weeks! If I keep this pace it will take me roughly one year to paint all of them. BTW, If you follow me on twitter you may already know this guy but here’s my first ever plague marine painted, based and ready to be fielded. I think the result is good enough.
Tumblr media
Well, with just two hours I was only able to prime and base-coat my Typhus but while I was doing that I got to talk to a newcomer that just happened to buy a Tau starting box. He was already painting them so I gave him some advice. Should have given him this blog link to share my tutorials for beginners. Speaking of which, I think I will break up the full painting scheme of my pre-heresy death guard and do a step-by-step, as these colors seem to be really appreciated by everybody who sees them.
Shopping
When my friend Matt came to the store I packed my stuff, bought a couple of GW washes I needed and we headed for the local hobby store. I didn’t get to buy anything but my friend needed to buy a bottle of Vallejo Flow Improver. I say “needed” cause I was forcing him to buy one: everybody needs to have one in the painting rack even if you only use brushes. I will probably explain how it is used in a tutorial as this represent the secret weapon for perfect washes or glazes.
Tumblr media
On the way back we just stopped for a quick Kebab which is not a super-common food here in Japan and I always try to get one when I go there. Oooh... was it delicious! With a lot of meat and the spicy sauce.
Playing!
After getting the food we took the train from Namba to Kyobashi and spent the rest of the night playing our first Warhammer 40k game. We were hosts to these two guys here, who, believe it or not, are the authors of the video unboxing that took me and my friend into 40k. Go and check the video out because they get pretty deep into the details.
As you can easily imagine, the game was a big brawl between Space marines and Death guard models but our hosts also had some additional units for the death guard (namely, the Hellbrute and the Blightlord terminators) and some Eldar. Don’t ask me their names ‘cause they all looked alike with their characteristic pointy hats. It was a pretty fun game, actually but I’m not going to write a report like I did for Mercs because it was a big mess. Checking back the rules the day after I can tell you that we missed a lot of key rules, especially those specific to each unit. Well, it was our first game so we actually got to perform quite well. I cannot say who won because we had to stop mid-game and both sides lost roughly the same amount of models/power so it was a draw even though the Death guard was in a better position and was about to strike with a lot of hard-hitting units in the subsequent turn. It was fun. A lot of crazy fun... but we still need to read the rules some more times before we can get to dive in this size of games.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Impressions
After the first game, I have some impression. I’ll write them down with no special order. Except the first one... that’s definitely the first one, indeed.
I hate Eldar: they’re greatly, greatly, immensely overpowered. They shoot salves of God knows what and they almost always hit. They’re not powerful, of course, but they get to damage you a lot and that sucks if you are a “less than shooty” army like the Death Guard. The Poxwalkers were not even able to get into close combat: only one dude was left after two Eldar shooting phases. And they don’t even get to do morale so it could be even worse.
The rules feel like AoS: this was my first 40k 8th edition but I know AoS pretty well and I can tell you that there’s a lot of AoS in this new ruleset. As a matter of fact, even if in the beginning I was the one that didn’t do his homework studying the rules in advance, I was able to get ahead with some key mechanics that are just exact copies of AoS rules. I also kept calling Armor Piercing “rending”...
Know your opponents: This is true for all wargames: if you are serious, get a book for all the opposing factions. If you don’t, it gets super-hard to follow what the opponent does if he doesn’t show you the rules and just keeps rolling. Getting to know them in advance is an advantage do you know who you should hit first.
Study your units: You need to remember each trait, each special rule and maybe even the stats of each unit you filed. If you fail to do so, the game turns into a book club where you just keep reading from the codex/rulebook. This felt like the old WHFB I used to play during college.
Death Guard sucks: The units you get in the starter box, at least. The Lord of Contagion didn’t get to do any damage (even though we didn’t use his special deployment rule so, its the previous point over and over again!). The Poxwalkers may act as a tar pit or a meat shield but you need to get them there and they will probably all be dead when you manage to. I have to buy an Hellbrute and the Blightlord terminators because they were the only viable units in the game.
Game sessions are long: I read a lot of comments where the average gaming session is described as “short” but yesterday, after 3 hours we only managed to nail down two full turns. Let’s see how it gets when we get used to the rules.
Never play unpainted: the Eldar were all unpainted and that takes away half of the fun in my opinion. But I’m a paintbrush aficionado and my opinion doesn’t probably count too much.
That’s it for today. I want to get some paint on my Typhus before my son wakes up from his nap. But before I go, just a small update: I am (admittedly slowly) setting up a Facebook page to try to reach a wider audience. If everything works well, this post will also appear on the said page automatically.
Until next week, keep hobbying and having fun!
Game on!

VULVARINE on tour Presented by Fat Rascal Theatre Company King's Head Theatre June 11 - 6 July 2019 Interview with Robyn Grant, artistic director of Fat Rascal Theatre and performer in Vulvarine ‘Ripping apart comic book Superhero clichés and gender stereotypes … with songs that stand out for their ingenuity, wit and catchiness’ ★★★★★ London Pub Theatres review LPTmagazine: Hi Robyn, The VULVARINE tour is well under way now but we’re delighted that you’re coming back to King’s Head Theatre, with your anarchic musical. As Artistic Director of Fat Rascals are you the genie behind it all? Robyn Grant: We’re thrilled to be returning to the Kings Head! As one of their associate companies it really feels like our London home and we can’t wait for the London audiences to get their teeth into it. As for being the genie I wouldn’t say that at all haha, I have the most fantastic team around me here at Fat Rascal. Our brilliant producer Laura Elmes who is a total power house, my genius co-lyricist Daniel Foxx, our wonderful associate director Siobhan CannonBrownlie and of course our amazing cast and crew. They’re such a joy to work with and make my job very easy indeed. LPT: We imagine the first rehearsals were laugh a minute, but perhaps it had a much more serious intent? RG: We came into the show knowing exactly what we wanted to say. We had a few research days looking at the marvel universe and its lack of female characters, at the tampon tax and everyday sexism, at the pharmaceutical industry, hormonal treatments frequently used on women and the risks they pose. With all of that in our backpacks we dived into the adventure of creating the comedy, the pace and the feel of the show. All of our political elements are an undercurrent, fuel for the fire and made to seep into the audience’s subconscious. From rehearsals forwards its really our job to make people laugh! We all get on so well more often than not rehearsals just feel like playtime and it’s up to poor Siobhan to come and reign us in, tell us to get off each others backs, put the wigs down and do some bloody work. LPT: Allie Munro is electric in her role as the hopeless Bryony Buckle thrust into a Spiderman-esque scenario as Vulvarine, complete with nuclear sea urchins. In the story it’s the result of hormone therapy gone wrong and a well-timed bolt of lightning. What was the hardest part of putting all these elements together? RG: Figuring out the story for this show and creating a sensical and satisfying arc was the hardest part for me. As you say there’s so many elements but we want our work to be fun, fast and accessible. No-one should feel left behind. Allie is a total gift of an actor because whatever you throw at her she’ll take it and make it her own, and also almost translate it for the audience. She’s so relatable, likeable and god damn funny I almost think there’s nothing that girl couldn’t sell. Saviour of womankind? Easy mate. LPT: You’re also acting in the show, playing multiple roles. Could you tell us a bit more about your role as the wittily named Mansplainer? RG: The Mansplainer is Vulvarine’s arch nemesis. He’s a 55 year old evil marine biologist called Keith Herlit who harbours a love of The Greatest Showman and a hatred of womankind. It sounds completely nuts I’m well aware but he is SO much fun to play and one of my favourite parts to date. LPT: There’s no doubt the show has heart, but what’s the break-through scene for you? RG: I love the romantic duet at the show’s climax, ‘The Office Boy and Vulvarine’. It’s a total celebration and pastiche of musical theatre cheese and 80’s rock ballads. There’s a disco ball, there’s dancing fish and there’s some tasty AF harmonies. It’s everything I’ve ever wanted to make and the audience always bloody love it, it’s so silly and satisfying. LPT: With the larger than life characters and the catchiness of the songs, have any of your audiences got carried away? RG: Yes they get rowdy and we love it! With our shows we always want the audience to know that they’re welcome to laugh, cheer and whoop. This isn’t a night at the theatre to sit and be silent. It should feel like a party, a celebration; everyone should feel totally empowered and badass at the end. The ladies in Bristol who brought in a bottle of prosecco each and sang along with the finale, we salute you. Equally the gang who were all dressed up as the Mansplainer in Sheffield, fantastic work. LPT: The show is certainly a master class in multi-roling, with a caste of five playing a multiude of roles. What’s the secret to your success? RG: We have a firm (and probably unwarranted) belief that anything can be done and that if it seems impossible, it’s probably a gift. Crowd scenes, flying and manic fast changes; Things can go wrong at any time, the audience are totally in on the joke and that creates an electric atmosphere. We just need them to be on our side, they are very much the other actor in the room and if they’re willing to buy it and laugh, anything can be done! LPT: Have you got a favourite stand out moment in the show yourself? RG: I love the reprise of the title song ‘Vulvarine’, sang by Sonya, the Mansplainer’s wife (Played by Steffan Rizzi). It’s such a great empowering moment of girl power, we’re careering towards the end and DANG, boy can SANG. LPT: This isn’t your first addition to the musical theatre genre, you took TOM AND BUNNY SAVE THE WORLD to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2017. That was an equally hilarious take on the Zombie Apocalypse trope so we wondered what else you might have up your sleeve? RG: Well well well, not a white rabbit but an Octowoman! We’re currently working on our new musical ‘Unfortunate’, the untold story of plus-size icon Ursula the Sea Witch. It’s a parody based around Disney’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ and hoo boy are we excited about it. Think sass, sex and suckers. We’ll be taking the show to the Edinburgh fringe festival this summer alongside Vulvarine. LPT: Finally, what do you think is the best thing about bringing the show to King’s Head theatre on this leg of your tour? RG: Fabulous London audiences including Rascal fans old and new, a brilliant space to bring the show to life in and a delightful pub for a summers eve G&T, what more could we want!? THIS SHOW HAS ENDED VULVARINE Presented by Fat Rascal Theatre Company on tour: Komedia Brighton, May 27th – 29th King's Head Theatre June 11 - 6 July 2019 Cast Doncaster, July 10th The Lowry Salford, July 11th – 12th King’s Head box office Bryony Buckle is astoundingly average. Her days are filled with mind numbing office work, thinking about lunch and lusting after Orson Bloom from IT. But following a dose of hormone therapy gone wrong and a well-timed bolt of lightning, Bryony gains superhero abilities and a brand-new persona: Vulvarine, saviour of womankind. Where is all the tampon tax going? Who is The Mansplainer, and what is his evil plan? Grab your tights, your spanx and your most supportive sports bra. It’s hero time. "We came into the show knowing exactly what we wanted to say. We had a few research days looking at the marvel universe and its lack of female characters, at the tampon tax and everyday sexism, at the pharmaceutical industry, hormonal treatments frequently used on women and the risks they pose. With all of that in our backpacks we dived into the adventure of creating the comedy." "Allie is a total gift of an actor because whatever you throw at her she’ll take it and make it her own, and also almost translate it for the audience. She’s so relatable, likeable and god damn funny I almost think there’s nothing that girl couldn’t sell. Saviour of womankind? Easy mate." "This isn’t a night at the theatre to sit and be silent. It should feel like a party, a celebration; everyone should feel totally empowered and badass at the end. The ladies in Bristol who brought in a bottle of prosecco each and sang along with the finale, we salute you. Equally the gang who were all dressed up as the Mansplainer in Sheffield, fantastic work." "We have a firm (and probably unwarranted) belief that anything can be done and that if it seems impossible, it’s probably a gift. Sonic Injustice Like Fighting Game Character Concept List
Since that reblog and looked at that official post just thinking. Just saying I'm at Jack In The Box now and have some time before I go see my therapist.
I think I thought about this before Sonic Mania came out or...I forgot yet feel before so or okay after the game came out in August I don't know forgot. Yet this was an idea I wanted to talk about.
A Sonic fighting game like in the vain of Injustice 2. Such as characters having narly interactions first and characters having crazy awesome but insane power moves still or just... basically I remember trying to think of a list of characters. No offense only characters from games because just... almost left power still but thought before this quest characters might not just apply to other Sega characters or even non canon Sonic characters. But as a stupid joke no offense you aren't gotta be seeing Scorpion or Subzero as guest characters.
I'm just gonna type down the list of characters I remember thinking best I can. Including tried to make it reasonable.
1: Sonic of course no offense lol ha okay to smile.
2: Metal Sonic
3: Shadow
4: Chaos
5: Amy Rose
6: Blaze
7: Tails
8: Knuckles
9: Dr. Eggman with him using a new battle suit mainly gloves where he can get up and personal to punch Sonic or anyone else in the face
10: Rouge
11: Espio
12: Silver
13: Fang
14: E123 Omega
15: Vector
16: Zavok
17: Bean
18: Bark
19: Mecha Sonic
20: Silver Sonic
The last two just I remember I was running low somewhat on villians. But feel people might be bothered by a lot of robotic Sonic's just thought when typing Sonic oh yeah Metal Knuckles and just thought Egg Robo are nice ideas.
Other characters some new and even human ones meh my own characters.
Infinite would most likely be special DLC something like how Darkseid is. He was a pre order bonus now he's on the store.
Zeena was a thought okay I'm thinking she might of been not. But seeing that official post now makes me think. Really reason why she be there is mostly fans would want her. Despite I feel Zavok is perfect.
Emeral sorry wait looked on Google and pressed emerald sonic by mistake.
Yet Emerl okay had to look twice at his name. But Emerl because of Sonic Battle. Don't know if DLC but part of the main roaster would make more sense and his return too.
Shade was and idea for DLC but the shit with Ken Penders no offense I doubt we would see her again unless Ken Penders changes shit.
Silver Sonic 2 as DLC but original Silver Sonic is there now so no but as a costume skin would work.
Guest characters are Nights from Nights Into Dreams from Sonic Team, and Ulala from Space Channel 5 bit Sega related games. Including I wanted to pick characters that would make sense but remember wanted ones who could fight. Now thought of Beat before I made this and think other Sega related guest characters could join and even non Sega game characters.
DLC fighter pack 1 in case theirs more
E102 Gamma brought back to life.
Sonic The Werehog a doppleganger or well basically now think a clone of Sonic who is stuck in the form of the werehog instead of well...a version of Sonic where the Earth was never fixed in Sonic Unleashed because it to me seems depressing.
Also told lady who knows me and works here she asked if everything was fine said yes or yeah forgot.
Jet The Hawk.
Two okay a and again and aide from school texted me.
But wanted to mention two of the special power moves have some characters mainly think of Blaze has Marine with her ship, the other Babylon Rogues for Jet as I think about it.
Also their are interactions with staged you can even send your opponents flying throw stuff like the Injustice series. Including one of the stages includes the Space Colony Ark where you use the Ecplise Canon on your opponents and maybe okay ether Knuckle's or Rouge's stages but remember theirs others in Sonic Adventure 2 or Eggman's base need to think.
Fine got tag down will leave it as Sonic The Hedgehog no fighting games tag didn't need to press the tag space it's 1:22 pm gonna take large Dr pepper and go 1:23 pm typing on phone with right hand only

Guantánamo Bay as Nursing Home: Military Envisions Hospice Care as Terrorism Suspects Age
Tumblr media
This article was produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting.
GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba — Nobody has a dementia diagnosis yet, but the first hip and knee replacements are on the horizon. So are wheelchair ramps, sleep apnea breathing masks, grab bars on cell walls and, perhaps, dialysis. Hospice care is on the agenda.
More than 17 years after choosing the American military base in Cuba as “the least worst place” to incarcerate prisoners from the battlefield in Afghanistan, after years of impassioned debates over the rights of the detainees and whether the prison could close, the Pentagon is now planning for terrorism suspects still held in the facility to grow old and die at Guantánamo Bay.
With the Obama administration’s effort to close the prison having been blocked by Congress and the Trump administration committed to keeping it open, and with military trials inching ahead at a glacial pace, commanders were told last year to draw up plans to keep the detention center going for another 25 years, through 2043.
At that point, the oldest prisoner, if he lives that long, would be 96. Another of the 40 people still held here — the Palestinian known as Abu Zubaydah, who was confined to a box the size of a coffin while held at a secret C.I.A. site and waterboarded 83 times to break him — would be 72. Like him, a number of the detainees are already living with what their lawyers say are the physical and psychological aftereffects of torture, making their health especially precarious as they head toward old age.
“Unless America’s policy changes, at some point we’ll be doing some sort of end of life care here,” the commander of the detention center, Rear Adm. John C. Ring, said during a discussion with reporters that highlighted the kinds of questions the prison is asking Pentagon policymakers to decide.
“A lot of my guys are prediabetic,” Admiral Ring said. “Am I going to need dialysis down here? I don’t know. Someone’s got to tell me that. Are we going to do complex cancer care down here? I don’t know. Someone’s got to tell me that.”
The prison is envisioning communal nursing home-style and hospice care confinement of detainees. Already, military commanders say, the detainees now suffer typical middle-age conditions: high blood pressure and cholesterol, joint pain, diabetes and, lately, sleep apnea.
But the military is grappling with an array of questions about how much medical care the prisoners should receive, how it should be delivered and how much Congress will provide to pay for it.
The closest major United States military hospital is in Jacksonville, Fla., 822 miles north. That is where Admiral Ring’s troops go for medical needs that the small base hospital cannot provide, like an M.R.I. But, by law, the military is forbidden to take Guantánamo’s Law of War detainees to the United States.
So most nonroutine medical care has always had to come to the prisoners. Cardiologists have for more than a decade come to consult on some prisoners’ cases. Other specialists have made regular visits to do colonoscopies and examine orthopedic injuries. A prosthetist comes for those with long-healed battlefield amputations.
For now, the military says, no prisoner has cancer and anybody using a wheelchair can get himself in and out of it. But, senior staff members are puzzling through how many cells they will need with grab bars and ramps, and bigger spaces for gurneys, wheelchairs and showers.
“You know, a lot of these folks had hard lives before they came here to Guantánamo Bay,” said the senior medical officer, a Navy commander whose name cannot be disclosed under the military’s rules for visits by journalists to the prison. “We are starting to see the use of canes and walkers and braces and so forth.”
Admiral Ring said the military had no geriatric or palliative care physicians. So he is sending a team to see how the federal Bureau of Prisons handles sick and dying convicts.
The Guantánamo Bay prison has a revolving medical staff of 140 doctors, nurses, medics and mental health care providers. They care for the detainees but also provide some services to the 1,500 troops assigned to the prison, who can go to the base hospital or to the United States for more complex medical care.
Now, the Pentagon is seeking $88.5 million to build a small prison with communal hospice care capacity for the 15 detainees brought here from C.I.A. black sites — six of whom await death penalty trials as alleged conspirators in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and the American destroyer Cole in which nearly 3,000 people died.
The initial cost estimate for the project in 2013 was $49 million. Last year, Admiral Ring estimated it at $69 million. Congress declined to fund it, citing more urgent Defense Department infrastructure needs.
The former black site prisoners are suspected masterminds, deputies or foot soldiers linked to Al Qaeda, and their defense lawyers and medical experts they consult call them Guantánamo’s sickest. Some of the ailments the military attributes to aging, they say, are actually the aftermath of C.I.A. torture.
One prisoner, known as Hambali, 55, an Indonesian who is being held as a former leader of the Southeast Asian extremist group Jemaah Islamiyah, is due for a knee replacement, said his defense lawyer, Maj. James Valentine of the Marines. Major Valentine said the damage to Mr. Hambali’s knee directly resulted from his first year of C.I.A. captivity, when he was always shackled at the ankles.
Mustafa al-Hawsawi, 50, a Saudi man accused of helping the Sept. 11 hijackers with travel and expenses, has for years suffered such chronic rectal pain from being sodomized in the C.I.A. prisons that he sits gingerly on a pillow in court, returns to his cell to recline at the first opportunity and fasts frequently to try to limit bowel movements, said his capital defense lawyer, Walter Ruiz. He has become dependent on a narcotic painkiller called tramadol to make it through the day, Mr. Ruiz said.
It may strike some people as odd that the military is discussing complicated, expensive medical care for the detainees, especially those the Pentagon prosecutor wants sentenced to death.
“It is paradoxical,” said Dr. Stephen N. Xenakis, a psychiatrist and retired Army brigadier general, who has consulted on Guantánamo cases since 2008. “But we don’t let people just die in this country. It violates all of our ethics, our medical ethics.”
Even before most of the detainees reach old age, the prison has confronted the challenges of providing sophisticated medical care under the constraints imposed on it.
In summer 2017, guards found an accused war criminal, Abd al Hadi al Iraqi, incontinent in his cell. He had complained for years about debilitating back pain from degenerative disc disease. A hurricane was headed to the Caribbean, and the Pentagon rushed a Navy neurosurgical team to the base to do an emergency spine surgery.
Recently released court documents in Mr. Hadi’s case challenge the assertion of commanders who say they provide detainees with excellent health care on par with American service members.
He underwent three spine surgeries in September 2017, the first on his lower back, another on his neck and a third to drain a postoperative hematoma. Then, that October, a senior officer at Guantánamo’s community hospital declared in an email that the patient’s “cervical fusion has failed.”
The officer, whose name was redacted in the court record, offered three possible options: giving Mr. Hadi a neck brace and hoping for the best; bringing in a special screwdriver from a Navy hospital in Portsmouth, Va., to remove hardware inserted in the patient’s neck in an earlier operation, or transporting him to the Portsmouth hospital for complex surgery.
In a rare admission of the limits of medicine at Guantánamo, the naval officer added that “the prospect of attempting” that complicated operation at the base hospital here “scares the hell out of me.”
What happened next is not in the court records. But Col. Amanda Azubuike of the Army, a spokeswoman for the Southern Command, which oversees the prison, said by email that the idea of airlifting the prisoner “was obviously not pursued nor explored further given the legal restrictions.”
Two more operations on Mr. Hadi would follow at Guantánamo.
Court filings show Mr. Hadi has chronic pain and back spasms, for which he is prescribed a variety of painkillers and muscle relaxants. His surgeon has testified that Mr. Hadi may not improve. At a hearing on his case in March, guards brought him to court in a wheelchair; he used a walker to transfer to a cushioned rehabilitation chair. The hearing abruptly recessed when one of his lawyers said Mr. Hadi’s answers were not tracking with questions his legal team was putting to him.
Mr. Hadi, now 58, has a February 2020 trial date. To ensure his attendance, the Pentagon fast-tracked bringing a wheelchair-accessible holding cell to the court compound where legal proceedings take place. It was already on order in anticipation of a population of aging detainees.
It is triple the size of the court’s other five holding cells, large enough to hold a hospital bed and, according to a case prosecutor, will have a video monitor so Mr. Hadi can watch a feed of his trial from the bed. It will also have a phone to let him or a lawyer call the courtroom next door, if he has something to say.
The military has already figured out what to do when a detainee dies because that has happened nine times since 2006.
Muslim employees on base offered the deceased their traditional rites until a Muslim chaplain arrived to take over. The State Department then arranged to repatriate the prisoners’ remains.
For those who cannot be repatriated, there is a chain-linked-fence ringed plot of land marked “Entrance Islamic Cemetery” on an off-limits portion of Guantánamo. The last time a reporter was able to visit it, in 2016, it was empty.

The Keeper of the Grove (Part 72)
The dining hall of Manor Schnee had been temporarily turned into a combination situation room/planning area/mess hall for the space and the slapdash nature of their operations.
Among other Queensguard, Agent Gumshoe waited there, pulling out a Fizzle Stick from her breast pocket, putting it into her mouth, and lighting it with her antique Zippo. The tip of the candy started to crackle, the sugar inside it melting and pouring out the other side, and she began to chew.
“They say we were all lucky that we came when we did, guns blazing and putting all kinds of holes in the plans of the Heralds and whoever the hell the ‘Council’ are,” she said. “Poor bastards don’t realize we Queensguard didn’t have the winning numbers on our tickets, and probably never will.”
Used to it, and with their own eccentric quirks beside, none of the other agents commented.
“It’s a hard life, being a Queensguard.
“You got your personal issues, your awful pasts, and your honest desire to make a difference in this world and help people out by putting holes in others, wondering if you’re a fuckin’ hero who deserves a parade, or just a gun with two legs someone else is throwing into the fray for them.
“Then you join the program, and everything goes to even deeper shit.
“Physical training that’ll make the Old World’s Marine Corps weep. School, the kind of eyebrow burning usually done by people lookin’ to tack some fancy letters to their name, have people callin’ em Dr. Whoever-The-Fuck. And don’t get me started on the third part of our training…
“Psychological Conditioning’ they call it, if only because ‘Mental Torture’ doesn’t sound as nice.
“They build us up, then seni through straight through hell and back, then send us back for however many go-arounds it takes before we break. Then they pick the pieces up, glue ‘em all back together best as they can, rinse and repeat, until they either wash out, or they come out the other side one certified Badass Motherfucker who can take on goddamn anything.
“You can’t do something like that without leaving plenty of scars, though, some of them more obvious than others.
“Take Agent Qi, here. Fuckin’ obsessed with the number 7, and his fancy revolver.”
“Seven is life,” Agent Qi said. “Six bullets, one barrel—seven.”
“Won’t say no to a mission that doesn’t have anything—and I mean anything—about it that is or adds up to seven, be it the time the shit’s going down, the letters in the name, or even the coordinates on the map.
“But if it does, you can be sure as shit he’s going to coast through all that with a smile on his face, like he’s the luckiest man in all the realm.”
“Then there’s Agent Gwendolyn, AKA ‘The Knight.’
“Lost her whole team in a mission where she was shadowing all the other functioning nutcases we call ‘Queensguard Agents.’ Almost died along with them—had actually, for a few seconds before her suit’s revival protocols kicked in and zapped her brain back to life, but either something went wrong in the process, or it was that particular moment that she cracked like the rest of us Rank 7’s did, got it in her head that the only way she was going to get through this and more if Gwendolyn died, and was reborn as someone better.
“So now she goes around narrating everything like me, except she calls herself ‘The Knight.’”
Everyone stopped as a new agent walked in, carrying a tray of food in her still armoured hands.
“Hello everyone,” Winter said.
Gumshoe pulled out the free seat next to her.
“Thank you,” Winter said as she sat down, and began to eat.
“You’re welcome, doll. If’n you don’t mind, I’m gonna continue my whole shtick with you.”
“Go on ahead, Gummy, it’s not like it isn’t all over the Info-Grid,” Winter replied.
“Thanks, doll.” Gumshoe replied. She chewed what remained of her fizzle stick for a few moments, then continued.
“And then there’s Winter.
“You’d think the name was her call sign, seeing as she’s got a reputation for keeping her cool through everything; melting her walls and becoming the warmest damn person you’d ever met in your entire life if it’d serve her mission well to butter you up before she cut straight to your heart like a hot knife; and being more than a little bit of a bitch, but no:
“That’s what her grandma named her, like she could see in the future and decided to save a future lover the trouble of nicknaming her their own version of ‘Frosty the Snowbitch.’
“So what’s wrong with someone who sounds like the mythical Queensguard Agent that makes it through training completely intact? Even someone who looks about as well-put together as can be like Ironwood has got his issues.
“Five words: The Keeper of the Grove.”
Winter choked on her food. Gumshoe picked up her drink for her, she took a long swig then sighed in relief.
“You need me to stop, sweetheart?”
“I’m fine...” Winter whispered.
“If you say so. Anyway...
“As Fear is a pretty helpful emotion for getting your ass in gear when you need it to, she didn’t beat it out of her so much as she made it so that she was scared of as few things as possible. Maybe she might get startled or uneasy, but never shitting-your-pants terror.
“It had seemed like a good idea at the time: she was already pretty well and tramautized from a horror show way back when she was still a sweet and innocent kid, and what would be the problem with being scared exclusively by someone that only existed in myth, pop culture, and really bad costumes on Eve of the Ether?
“When it turns out they live in Reality too, that’s what!
“As the Keeper was terrorizing her and her little sis in this very mansion, us crazies in the Queensguard thought Winter had finally broken for good, that this time, there would be no picking the pieces back up and gluing them back together. All we thought we were doing when we hauled her conked-out ass back to base was fix her as much as possible before we set her up for a nice, quiet civilian life with a hefty pension and a whole lotta perks beside.
“Then we all watched the Keeper 86 her sister on live holovision, and it turned out that the only thing in little tiny pieces that couldn’t be put back together was what we thought was reality.
“Nothing new, really, considering all the other crazy shit that happens in Avalon that necessitates an even crazier bunch of loons willing to protect it—AKA the Queensguard—but it still caught us all off guard.
“By the time we realized our big mistake, her sister was dead, the rest of her whole family was in the ground or may as well have been, and since she only ever kept working for us to keep her sister safe, she had pretty much lost everything she ever gave a fuck about.
“And what do you do with someone with nothing to lose?
“Give them everything to gain—namely, the Shepherd Suit Mk. IV, the latest in the line.
“First, Piper’s gearheads strapped guns and sturdy pieces of scrap metal to exo-suits originally made for hauling boxes around, then we started slapping armour and weapons designed specifically for getting shot and shooting right back, and then we shrank it down so you if you wanted to enter a building, you’d only have to duck to avoid banging your head, than break down the door and take a good chunk of the wall while you were at it.
“So where do we go from there?
“You make it smaller, faster, and strap some wings and the very cutting edge in energy-weapons to it, is what you do.
“There’s only three things that are keeping the Big Guys Upstairs from equipping every single trooper with these:
“One, it’s expensive as hell to mine, refine, and use this much Exanite and a shit-ton of other super-rare metals that all the armour, the weaponry, and the wiring needs.
“Two, it eats up power like a bus full of relapsed alcoholics at last call for Happy Hour, which is why it’s a damn good thing it can take out entire armies in the blink of an eye.
“And three, once you put it on, you can’t ever take it off—unlike its older siblings, the spine-jack on this thing becomes part of your actual spine.
“We thought we were just making the best of a very bad situation like usual, squeezing out some more use out of someone we thought we were going to have to put out to pasture, and who didn’t want to go there yet, either.
“But it turns out, the timing couldn’t have been better, because now the little sister turns out to be a whole lot less dead than we thought, we’ve got a messiah gone missing and possibly rogue, and a whole bunch of loonies with alien magitech and animal ears running about the whole realm causing hell and talking about something they call ‘The Truth.’
“You could be blind, and still read all the signs pointing to the one place that has the answers to all the latest mysteries Avalon is throwing at us:
“The Viridian Valley.
“So how many of us loons are going with you out there, soon as it gets dark and we don’t get turned to people-jerky soon as we step out the barrier?” Gumshoe asked.
“None,” Winter replied. “I’m going in with two Tinmen, and that’s mostly for recharging my core.”
Surprise came over all the agents faces.
“Seriously, doll?” Gumshoe asked.
“Yes, seriously,” Winter replied, her serious expression the most serious the others had ever seen.
“Sure you won’t end up putting your waste-management subsystems on overdrive when you eyeball her?” Gumshoe continued.
“I’m sure,” Winter replied. “I may have been absolutely terrified of the Keeper for almost all my life, but that ends now, because the face of my nightmares has kidnapped my little sister, brainwashed her, and seduced her.”
She raised her fists to the sky and started screaming.
“DO YOU HEAR ME, KEEPER?!
“YOU SEALED YOUR FATE WHEN YOU ‘KILLED’ MY LITTLE SISTER ON LIVE HOLIVISION, AND I’M ONLY MORE DETERMINED TO UTTERLY ANNIHILATE YOU NOW THAT YOU’VE KISSED HER ON LIVE HOLOVISION, TOO!
“I’M SCORCHING YOU WITH MY LASERS LIKE BOTH THOSE SCENES WERE SCORCHED INTO MY BRAIN—ESPECIALLY THE SECOND ONE!
“SERIOUSLY! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?!”
Winter sighed and got up from her seat. “Excuse me, everyone, I need to go get some last-minute repairs and upgrades before my big mission...”
“You do that!” Gumshoe yelled, as she and all the other agents were gathered up at the furthest corner away from Winter as possible, holding up their guns and projecting shields.
Winter left the dining hall, the agents slowly returned to their seats.
“Turns out there’s a fourth downside to the Mk. IV!” Gumshoe muttered as she chewed the last of her fizzle stick, pulled out a new one with shaking hands. “If it turns out the person you put it in is STILL pretty batshit insane, getting them out of the suit is going to be a LOT harder than putting them in…
“Like I said: we thought it was a good idea at the time...”

Dad's Car Insurance Coverage for My Car Accident?
I was in a fender bender, rear ending a truck in my Mazda 3. The collision cause minor damage to the Ram1500 rear bumper, but because I tried turning to dodge it, it broke it my headlight, scrunched my hood, and the driver door doesn't open well. Basically, the car was mine. Title under my dad's name until 4 months ago. Now under mine. The car is insured by my dad. I was not on the insurance. Since the car has been towed to the shop, the insurance company has opened an investigation to straighten things out. They are wondering if it is under my name, and my dad's insurance, why I was driving it and not on the plan. My brother thinks they are trying not to pay for the damage, I'm just hoping they will. Will my car insurance go up even more now?

I was not arrested or anything at this scene but I did get a ticket for careless driving by failing to yield. I am a 25 year old male btw and I was on my mom's insurance driving her car. We called the insurance and found out that she was monitored and the baby was ok. She was due next week, but the insurance hasn't heard about the delivery or anything. The lady, however is claiming neck and back injuries. Will my insurance go up more because of the accident AND her claims or just the accident itself? How a car insurance works? minor car accident?
Hi, everyone. This morning, I had a minor car accident in the grocery parking lot. A lady's car hit the front seat door on the right side of my car. The lady's car is fine, but my car door got dented. For your information, the lady's car was parked in the parking space and I was backing up behind her side-way when she reversed and hit my car. I think she was careless. Anyhow, We exchanged year, make, mode, plate number, insurance information, personal info(name, phone number) each other. Now, I don't know what would happen if I report the accident to my insurance company, GEICO. If I report the accident, I get repair money for the lady's insurance company? if so, how much would I get from the insurance company? and if it's not enough I have to use my own pocket money? Does this count as my fault and would increase my insurance payment? And, I did not take any photos of the cars at the time. How can I prove the accident if the lady insists the accident did not happen? Sorry, it's a lot of questions. It is my first time ever to get into a car accident since I started driving. I'd really really really thank you if you can please give me your advice or share your experiences. and one more thing, if you get your car to a repair center, how long does it usually take to get your car repaired? I live on California, and it's very inconvenient without a car. Insurance companies that helped develop Obamacare?
Liberals: You are required by law to purchase automobile insurance. Why not health insurance?
The reason you are required by law to purchase auto insurance is so that you cannot screw over society by making them pay for your car accidents when you can't pay for them yourself. Same with health insurance. People get sick and then others end up paying for them. It's much easier to require everyone to pay health insurance, just as with auto insurance. Do you agree?""

What states don't require auto insurance?
As a young driver auto insurance is way to expensive. Since I drive a Mercedes most quote me at thousands of dollars a year. More than what I can afford. I know some states don't require car insurance if you can prove you have the financial means to pay out if you cause an accident. I need a list of those states that don't require auto insurance if you can prove you can afford to pay out. On top of this question how do I prove I can afford it. Do I need to keep a minimum amount of money in a bank account or do I have to buy a bond how does it work. And if it works with a bond or bank account please list the states with the minimum $ you need in bonds or account money. The reason Im asking is that I can easily get a minimum amount in my account (hopefully under $10,000) because id rather have $10,000 sitting in a bank I cant use than having to pay thousands a year for insurance I don't need. I been driving for 3 years and I never had an accident and im confident I never will (at least not one that's my fault) so I don't wanna waste thousands of dollars I need for my school. The reason Im asking is cause im looking for a state that suits me. So far Vermont and new Hampshire have laws to my liking but hopefully you guys can give me more possibilities by answering this question. Thanks""

""Car Accident, Insurance won't pay up .. Any advice ?""
I was in an car accident two weeks ago, the other driver hit the side of my car because she did not make her stop. I tried to stop however, she was still able to hit the left side of my car. Police arrived but he recommended for us both to file a claim on each others insurance and that they would settle the problem themselves. My insurance company came to take photos of the damages and asked us what had happen. I received letters a couple of days ago, one from my insurance and the others person insurance. My insurance denied her claim because the damages demonstrated that it was her fault. However, i also received a letter from her insurance, that they also denied my claim. I called her insurance and they told me that it they weren't going to pay for any of the damages made to my car, because the the collision shows that it was my fault. What is the proper way to repaint a brand new car? Insurance question...?
I recently had my car damaged in one of our Texas storms. It caused about $4000 in damage to the entire left side, hood, and both bumpers, and knocked out two windows. I just got my car back from the insurance suggested body shop and I can still see where many of the rock marks were painted over. There are divets in the paint in a lot of spots, which is better than the metal that was showing before, but not how I want it. My question is, shouldn't they have completely sanded down the areas of the car that needed to be repainted instead of just painting over the paint nicks? The car is a 2006 Mustang that is practically brand new. Maybe I am wrong, but shouldn't the insurance company be fixing the car to the PERFECT condition it was in before it was damaged?""

If she crashed her car, would this get flagged up under my insurance, although she crashed it....i dont want to pay high insurance for the rest of my life for her mistake or would it come under her record??""
""Insurance problem, auto?
recently took a new job in Canada as a social worker and tried to add business coverage on my vehicle. I was told by my insurance company that this would be commercial because there is some risk I would have kids in the car. I called another company who told me it is just business. The initial company is cancelling my policy as they do not offer commercial insurance which they claim I require. They are not cancelling it for any negative reasons but will this cancellation show up and effect my rates even though it is not my fault. I tried to add the correct insurance but they did not have it so they are cancelling me. Other companies say I do not need commericial coverage so I should be ok with business but because there is a this cancellation I worry. I know if you have a cancellation for things like non payment or tickets it will impact you but what about this?
Which comes first? The car or insurance?

Was it wise for me to cancel my car insurance?
I had gotten into an accident. ICBC says it's 100% my fault, and I did just file an injury claim for myself and my family members that were in the car with me. I don't think my car is drivable, but if it is, then it's not worth fixing because I don't have collision and it would cost more to fix than how much I had bought it for. What I did yesterday, was cancelled my car insurance. But I was just talking to someone who told me that it wasn't a good idea to do that. And now I'm doubting myself. Will this be held against me? The person in the other car claimed injury and her car is also damaged. Did I just dig a deeper hole for myself?""

""Driving without insurance in CA, only 19 yrs old and does not own car, what is the worst case scenario?""
So I got into a bit of a fender bender at my college parking garage. I was trying to park and due to the tight space i apparently hit the back bumper of a car. I drove away because I didn't want to further block traffic, I thought I hit the side wall, and I was already late for an important exam. The campus police called me, and he's not charging me with a hit and run. We also have everything straightened out with the other driver. However, the officer needs my insurance to complete the police report. I do not have insurance, I don't own a car and the car I was driving was my sister's. Am I completely liable? I researched around and saw fines were up to $1000 and licenses were revoked 60-90 days. Please help me answer, I'm so stressed out and terrified of everything that's happening!..""

Now it is still going strong with 150K but he just got hit from behind and the insurance company will want to junk it because the repairs will cost more then the car. He has asked the other party for $600 out of pocket but the other party wants to go thru insurance because they only have a $200 deductible. ""Car insurance, accident & medical bills?""
I was in a car accident a month and a half ago. I went through my insurance to get my car fixed. My insurance dealt with his insurance & they accepted full responsibility. I went to the hospital immediately after the accident because I was afraid I had a concussion. I had mentioned to my ins company that I went to the hospital & asked what to do with my ambulance bill. I was told that wasn't covered under my insurance & his insurance would need to contact me. The ambulance company asked for my car insurance info & I have not received a bill, so I'm assuming my insurance company took care of it. However, I now have copays for physical therapy for my neck & back. How does this work? Do I need to contact his insurance or will his insurance be contacting me? I assumed I would hear from them, so I'm a bit confused by the process.""
How much do you pay for car insurance?
How much do you pay for car insurance?
Should I yell at the insurance company?
I'm very frustrated at this point. Two years ago I got braces, at the time I was still living on the east coast. I then moved to California halfway during treatment and learned that my insurance was not going to cover treatment after my transfer (even under their providers). I still needed the braces at the time so I found a seperate orthodonist and paid for all treatments as though I had no insurance. Its been almost a year now and I need the braces removed. However, I cannot afford to remove them and my insurance still won't cover for any ortho procedures. Should I be a pacifist about all of this? I've spent quite a lot of money on treatment w/o the help of insurance. Now I'm in a rut, stuck with braces even though I don't need them anymore and I feel as though no one will help me.""
