he dos whatever Ron wants to do to hang out with him - bestie, so TRUE!!!
The great joke of Harry Potter is that Ron is known for being Harry's sidekick when the reality of the situation is eleven-year-old Harry Potter made one (1) friend and immediately decided to spend the rest of his life with him. And then he did.
#'but harry joins the quidditch team first—' ron loved quidditch before harry even knew what it was !!#ron mentions that it's cool to be an auror way before harry thinks about it himself!#i will just never get over ron being harry's hostage in the second task I think#harry hangs out with ron for like one afternoon#and then when malfoy comes over to socialize disastrously he's immediately like. you keep my boy's name out your fucking mouth#ride or die doesn't even begin to cover it#the only time harry is ever mad at ron is book 4 and book 7 when ron's being pissy and mean#and even then THEE minute ron comes back with 'okay better now sorry tho :(' harry folds like a lawn chair#girl stand up... stand UP#platonic(?) soulmates fr

*Harry looked at his mother."Stay close to me," he said quietly.* Could you write something about Harry having this moment with Lily, but in your world where Jily lives? Perhaps after Dumbledore's death, or at the end of the War, after Voldemort died. I don't know, I feel that Harry would be very attached to his mother in these important moments, and maybe if you want, your world where Jily lives is just perfect <3
Hey! Thank you so much for this prompt @sweeethinny! I love writing Lily and Harry’s moments together and this one is so special in the books!
Now, in the world I imagine, there are actually few moments that Harry needs his mother and she isn’t there. Then I thought about Voldemort’s ressurrection and the duel after, because this version of Priori Incantatem would have no James or Lily appearing. So Harry is alone... and he really needs his mother afterwards.
And then I finally wrote a version of the Third Task through Lily’s eyes, which is pure angst, really, but full of Lily’s mother love.
It’s on AO3 or below:
Their hug is so fleeting that Lily wonders if that moment will haunt her later.
She admonishes herself for ever thinking about that. Nothing will happen; it’s the Third Task and soon, whether Harry wins or not, this damn tournament will be over.
So for now, she hugs Harry but lets him go quickly, knowing he feels embarrassed of being hugged in public, and watches as James slids his hand fondly through Harry’s hair to mess it as much as he can. Harry smiles at them, nervous and a little excited too, and then he leaves them with the other champions.
James squeezes her hand as they sit again at the table, though neither is hungry anymore. In front of them, Hermione gives her a comforting smile, while Ron shakes his head.
‘Wanna bet he will end up winning this thing after all?’, he asks, turning to his brothers. Lily watches as they start betting on how long it will take for Harry to get out of the maze with the Cup in his hand, coins passing through their hands.
Her heart fills with a warm glee. They are betting on Harry. Never against him.
They walk to the Quidditch Field, James and Ron complaining about the mess they’ve made in the field and discussing how it will be the next season, how much Harry will need to train in the Summer for making up for the year he lost without any match.
‘He caught an egg dragon’, Ginny notes brightly, right next to Hermione. ‘What is a Golden Snitch after that?’
They laugh and Lily lets that sound warm her too; she has been shivering ever since they left the castle, though the summer night is warm. There is just something in the air tonight that makes her feel ill. A calm before the storm, with just the wind announcing the change that will come.
It’s probably just the nervousness. She couldn’t show to Harry, during their free day at Hogwarts, how apprehensive she was, but now her nerves are probably catching on with her. These tasks seemed so dangerous after all, and Harry is still so young…
The air around her is calmer than in the other tasks, however. People are talking excitedly, everyone wondering who will be the champion; now and then, even amongst students of other schools, she hears Harry’s name. He was the underdog, but now he is a favourite - not because of being the Boy-Who-Lived, but because of his achievements so far. First with that dragon, with the way Harry had flown nearly perfect, acting smart and dancing around it, much better than his parents’ original suggestion of attacking it in the eye; and then, during that boring Second Task, when it was announced that Harry had taken longer only because he was worried about all other hostages, not just his.
Lily had been worried with his delay, but she had no heart to chide him later. He was never in danger after all, and Harry was just being his usual selfless; he always had a tendency to defend others. Lily could not complain about her son being a fair player.
‘He will be okay’, James whispers to her as they take their places at the stands, and Lily forces herself to smile.
The sound of the whistle, marking the beginning of the Third Task, makes her jump, but with all the noise and confusion around her, no one seems to notice it. That’s better. She doesn’t need to infect her worries with others.
There doesn’t seem to be anything for her to worry, though. The first hour passes quickly. They can’t see anything inside the maze, but Bagman provides a few commentaries about what the champions have just faced - a boggart, an acromantula, a hole in the ground, blast-ended skrewts (though Lily is not sure she knows that), a disorientation fog, riddles, giant snakes.
And then it’s announced that the Beauxbatons champion is out. Lily remembers seeing that beautiful girl and wonders what happened to her, feels sorry she had to leave.
Ten minutes later, when Bagman announces the Durmstrang champion has left too, the crowd explodes in glee and noises around her. Now it’s only Harry and the Diggory boy on the run, which means a Hogwarts’ win in any case.
And now, for the first time, so close to the end, Lily really wonders how it would be if Harry really wins the tournament, instead of just surviving it. She can see the way he would beam, surprised and proud, how he would raise the cup and people would cheer around him; how Harry would be really happy because he won on his merits, and not because of something he did when he was one-year-old. That would be Harry’s victory, only his.
James will make sure to keep the cup in the middle of their living room; he will tell everyone how his son just won the Triwizard Tournament (‘and all the other champions were already of age, but Harry did not let that scare him, he fought bravely and won all the tasks! My son! Triwizard Champion!’).
And Lily can’t help but think that it’s her son, the son of a muggleborn witch, who will win the most traditional tournament, and what this means to her and other people like her. Oh, she will not mind gloating about this for once.
But the minutes go on, and there are no more announcements, Bagman’s voice silent and the excitement from the crowd is turning into whispers, questions, worries.
There is something wrong, Lily thinks, and she doesn’t need to say out loud because now not even James is frowning, quiet.
There is a commotion in the field, a bright colourful light that lasts for a second (‘Was that a portkey?’, James asks, confused), then she watches Dumbledore and the Minister rushing forward, but she can’t really see anything else. Then the whispers begin, those same words repeated in a crescendo as more people know about it and pass it on, a deadly song.
‘He is dead. Dead!’
She holds James’ hand as not to fall now. Everything is dark around her, and Lily is in a nightmare she can’t wake up, thinking of that last fleeting hug she gave on Harry; she should have hugged him more, refusing to let him leave the safety of her arms for the unknown. Why did she let him go? She feels the fire of the dragon burning her skin alive, the coldness of the deep of the lake and the still air of the maze that Harry entered to never come out -
‘Cedric Diggory! Dead!’
And it’s the first breath of air as she leaves that horrible nightmare, a relief beyond words, a lightness that comes to her as Lily understands it is not Harry that died…
Then it is guilt, a horrible feeling of being the worst person on the planet, because how can she be happy that someone else is dead? How can she actually smile when another parent will mourn their child today?
But there is no easy answer, no trying to understand what happened, just a primal urge to get to Harry and to make sure her son is safe.
She will worry about everything else later.
________________
‘Now I have work for each of you. Fudge's attitude, though not unexpected, changes everything’. Dumbledore is saying, looking at them all, and Lily knows what he will ask even before he says it.
She glances at Harry instead.
His face is pale, his eyes more troubled than a fourteen-year-old should have the right to be, and yet she can see he is watching everything with attention. He is trying to understand what is happening right now, as if witnessing Voldemort’s return and the crazy lunatics of that fake Mad-Eye Moody was not enough.
He needs to sleep - a dreamless sleep so he can begin to recover, as hard as that it will be.
Dumbledore turns first to Snape, asking him to do something if he is ready, and from the corner of her eyes Lily sees Snape’s eyes flickering briefly in her direction. She pretends not to have noticed it, as she has done every time they happened to meet before - it is easy because most of the time Snape doesn’t even seem to be able to look at her. And tonight she has more pressing things in her mind than an old friendship.
She knows Dumbledore will turn to her and James as soon as Snape leaves the room.
And he does, asking for their help to gather the old gang. The Order of the Phoenix.
Lily thinks of everyone that won’t be there for this second time and tries not to let this crush her heart. She doesn’t have time for old grieves today either. Harry needs her.
And, by God, how he needs. She sees the bandages in his arm, in his head; there are dark spots under his eyes, giving him a spooky look - he slept so little before he was awakened with the cries in the hall. And now the world he knows is falling around him, even if he doesn’t understand the full extension yet…
Everything will change now.
‘I will go’, James says softly, and Lily sees him watching her and Harry. James looks somber, much more than she has seen him in the last thirteen years, with that expression she didn’t really miss: the face of a soldier that was getting in a war he didn’t want to, but he would because he believed in everything he was fighting for.
She doesn’t want him to go, but someone has to, Lily knows. It is very important that people know the truth before it can be muffled, and they need to be ready. They need as much advantage as they can get.
Still, the idea of being away from James right now hurts her almost physically, an old familiar feeling of the unknowns that a war brings.
‘But… Dad…’, Harry’s voice is weak, but it is his tone that scares Lily. Harry sounds afraid for the first time that night - as if he too understands the possibility that James will walk off the door and not return.
She thinks of Cedric Diggory. His parents watched him enter a maze and he never returned. She can’t promise safety for Harry, not anymore; his trust in it has been broken forever.
He has faced death now.
‘I will be back before you awake, Harry’, James says soothingly, patting Harry’s feet over the blanket. ‘Right now I must do what I can, okay?’
Harry doesn’t look like he agrees, but he whispers: ‘Okay’.
James glances back at Lily. In those few seconds, she can read the fear in his eyes, not for himself, but for them; being away from his family at this moment doesn’t feel right for him either. But there is a fierce resolution in his eyes too, a notion of duty that James Potter will do everything he can for them, and Lily answers with a soft kiss on his lips.
Come back for us, is what she says in that kiss. If you want to do something for us, then come back.
‘I love you’, James whispers quietly, only for her, and she hears his promise of return in his voice.
And then he is gone.
She turns to Harry, sitting at the edge of his bed. Dumbledore tells him he will talk to the Diggorys and Lily closes her eyes as he leaves, fighting back a will to cry. It is the easiest thing to imagine what the Diggorys are going through and that scares her a lot.
Oh, God, Lily thinks to herself. Voldemort has returned only for a couple of hours now, the war has not even really begun, and she is fearful of everything already.
But she puts on her brave face. Later, when she is alone (or rather with James, his arms around her, preferably in the bedroom of the house they built together), she will let her feelings flow. Now, she needs to be there for Harry.
Lily opens her eyes, looking around. Ron and Hermione are staring at Harry, biting their lips as if they are on the edge of speech, but Harry’s eyes are fixed on the ceiling and nobody talks for a while.
She grabs the bottle of potion in the bedside cabinet, brushing the sack of gold as she does it. The sack falls in the ground, the sounds of metal coins echoing in the room. Harry winces as if that pains him.
‘You need to take your potion, Harry’, Lily tells him kindly, picking up the sack on the floor.
‘I don’t want it’, Harry murmurs. ‘The gold, I mean, I shouldn’t have won it. Ced… Cedric should have it’.
Lily tries to stop her hand from shaking as she uncorks the bottle of potion. It doesn’t work, but Harry doesn’t seem to notice as he holds the potion she gives him.
His brows are furrowed as if he is trying very hard to control himself.
‘It wasn’t your fault, Harry’, she tells him, knowing she will have to repeat it a thousand times until he believes it.
‘It is’, he argues emotionless. ‘I told him to come with me. He was… the spare’.
Lily doesn’t know what he means by that, but she can’t ask right now. Harry is breathing through his mouth now, his lips trembling and he absolutely refuses to look at anyone. She knows his expression.
It’s the same on her face when she can’t cry at the moment.
Harry doesn’t want an audience. He was never one to feel comfortable with his emotions in public.
‘Drink your potion’, she orders gently, trying to force him to lie down, though he remains sitted. ‘We will let you rest -’
‘No’, he cuts her off, taking her hand in his. Harry looks around briefly, his head down as if he doesn’t want to meet anyone’s eyes, and then he whispers: ‘Stay... stay close to me’.
It’s the way Harry says it that breaks her. His voice is guilty as if he doesn’t want to be this weak, this dependant, the words seemingly escaping his mouth against his will. He is pleading to her, asking for comfort as he did when he was three-year-old and the thunder scared him and he was ashamed of it; Lily remembers him refusing James’ company, asking specifically for hers instead.
It is a son’s plea for his mother.
‘I’m always with you, Harry’, she promises him, bending down and placing her arms around her. She thinks Harry should hate her, because she feels a liar - she wasn’t there for her son tonight. Harry faced everything alone, as brave as he could, but all by himself, him against Voldemort, no lingering ghost of his parents to support him.
And yet Harry doesn’t yell, doesn’t accuse her of anything. He accepts her, raising his arms to hug her too almost desperately, and Lily hears him sobbing. It is a cry of misery, a cry that speaks how tired her teenage son is and how sorrowful he is for everything that happened, even when it is not his fault.
‘I’m here’, she tells him softly, caressing his hair, urging him to feel he is loved and protected by his mother.
There is a loud noise and they break apart. Harry’s face is drenched with tears and, as Lily blinks hers away, she realizes she was crying too. She dries them away quickly, before quietly wiping Harry’s face too. He is refusing to meet her eyes now, looking embarrassed and so young.
She kisses his forehead tenderly.
'Sleep, Harry', she whispers.
Harry takes the potion, drinking it in one gulp, and then his head is falling heavily on the pillow. Lily arranges his hair, then smoothes his blanket. Now, at least, in a dreamless sleep, Harry looks calmer, more like the fourteen-year-old boy he should be and yet never will.
She sits back on the chair, in a quiet vigil, waiting for James to return so they can be there, together, for when Harry wakes up.

The fact that Harry missed Ron during the fourth book of the series is completely irrelevant to the 'Harmony' ship (unlike what Romione shippers claim)
I'd like to preface this by mentioning that I'm neither anti-Romione nor anti-Ron. I actually like him a lot (unlike a few of my fellow Harmonians, who hate the redhead so much that they actively wish him death). I really don't care whom people ship. At the same time, it makes my teeth chatter to hear Canon shippers make fatuous arguments that somehow "proves" that H/Hr can never be together.
I'd come across most of these claims on some other site, and for some mystical reason, they've received hundreds of upvotes. Despite the fact that Romione shippers tend to indulge in selective reading themselves.
And one of the most prevalent ones is, of course:
Harry missed Ron a lot during GoF. It's a sign that H/Hr would never work.
Seriously, how weird is that?
The friendship between Harry and Ron is certainly not germane to the H/Hr ship. I don't know why it shouldn't be more obvious, really.
Imagine using the affection (which is fully platonic) he felt towards Ron to leverage your own ships. Harry would miss Ron even if he was pitched with Cho Chang, Ginny Weasley, Romilda Vane, Luna Lovegood, Fleur Delacour... or literally any female character in the series you can think of. You might as well ship Harry with Ron himself, for all the good that would do.
The Weasleys had essentially adopted Harry. It's sort of the difference between your paramour and someone whom you consider a brother.
Also, as 'u/HopefulHarmonian' mentioned in response to a comment on Reddit a few months ago, Harry actively chose to spend more time with Hermione during that period, which is something he wouldn't have done if he disliked it very much.
And it's not as if he was completely dysfunctional without Ron, anyway.
"Well, that's good," said Harry loudly, his temper getting the better of him, "just as long as it's not drawn-out. I don't want to suffer."
Ron looked for a moment as though he was going to laugh; he certainly caught Harry's eye for the first time in days, but Harry was still feeling too resentful toward Ron to care.
Notice that the reason Harry didn't care about Ron nearly laughing is that he was angry at him. So, it's obvious that after a few days/weeks of being given the cold shoulder by his best friend, Harry had learned to get on just fine without Ron (unlike the very first day after his name came out of the Goblet and he enquired about Ron to Hermione).
I must also address the corollary claim that it was Ron whom Harry tried to save first during the Second Task of the Triwizard tournament.
Yeah... you get the point, don't you? Romione shippers hate the H/Hr romance so much that they pretend as if Ron.... wasn't Harry's priority.
That's the reason why he tried to hack the ropes binding Ron underwater. It also goes without saying that Harry would've inferred Hermione to be Krum's hostage. Why in the world would he try to save Hermione when his task was to rescue Ron?
Also, I'm curious as to who would've been Harry's hostage if Krum hadn't asked Hermione out to the Yule Ball.
Look at the very first thing he did after helping Ron out. You'd expect him to try and cut off Cho Chang's ropes, right? An extremely pretty girl whom he was head and heels over?
Well, no.
There were rocks littering the lake's bottom. He dived and snatched up a particularly jagged one and returned to the statue. He began to hack at the ropes binding Ron, and after several minutes' hard work, they broke apart. Ron floated, unconscious, a few inches above the lake bottom, drifting a little in the ebb of the water.
Harry looked around. There was no sign of any of the other champions. What were they playing at? Why didn't they hurry up? He turned back to Hermione, raised the jagged rock, and began to hack at her bindings too -
Need I say more?
And that's not to mention the fact that Harry starts to appreciate her more during the last few books.
I have no idea why some Romione fans pretend as if Harry never cared about Hermione, which is simply untrue. For one thing, it was she who managed to draw him out during OOTP. It was also Hermione for whom Harry made an exception during Deathly Hallows (when he didn't bother to wipe away his tears).
Won't you miss a family member if he/she acts like a jerk and stops talking to you?
That pretty much sums it up, because Harry viewed Hermione in an entirely different way compared to Ron.

My Treasure
( not my gif )
Hey everyone, so this is my first one-shot so I don’t know how it will go but hopefully it won’t be absolute trash so here we go x
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Hey Ced’
‘Hey Dove”
He said, opening his arms to me and enveloping me in a hug that I could stay in for hours.
“ I heard about the second task, how are you feeling about it all?”
“ I mean the first thing I did in this tournament was fight a dragon so I think I’ll be fine” he said, with his cheesy smile plastered on his face. The same smile I fell in love with.
“ So all you have to do is retrieve something? That sounds easy enough?”
“ At first yes, but it’s in the lake, so I have to swim through hundreds of strange plants and mermaids before I can even find the damn thing” His voice had shifted to a frustrated one, filled with underlying anger and distress.
“ Hey I’m sure you will do fine bub, do you know what you have to retrieve?” I said quizzically
“ All they said was “treasure”, so It could honestly be anything”,
“ Have you got all your charms ready? Everything you need before tomorrow?”
“ Yes don’t worry my love, I got help from Mcgonagall with the Bubble Head Charm so everything is sorted” He uttered, with a tone of reassurance to calm my mind.
“ Hey I have a free period if you want to go take a walk” I suggested, needing the warmth of Cedric and the breeze of the courtyard.
“ Anything for you bub” he said, planting a small peck on my lips, grinning into it like the handsome fool he is, and placing me under his arm as we walk the next few paces”
“ Miss… Miss!” Professor Mcgonagall announced in my direction,
“ Yes Professor Mcgonagall?” I said, wondering what she wanted, I had handed in my transfiguration work, I hadn't lost any house points, so what was it?
“ I need you to accompany me to Headmaster Dumbledore’s study, you’re not in trouble, but we just need to speak to you and a couple others. “
“ Oh ok, sorry Ced this seems important” I said, with the feeling of guilt already trickling up my throat and chest.
“ Don’t worry bub, I’ll see you in the stands tomorrow won’t I?”
“ What kind of girlfriend would I be if I wasn’t there to support you?” I proclaimed, with a smile plastered across my face ear to ear.
He gave me a kiss on the cheek and began walking forwards to the courtyard,
“ Professor Mcgonagall “
“ Mr Diggory “ Mcgonagall said, nodding her head at the Triwizard champion.
“ Now if you wouldn’t mind following me to the headmaster’s office “
“ Of course “ I said, not wanting to upset the professor before this “important meeting”.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------*Cedric’s Pov*
“Where is she?” I thought to myself, as my legs and arms freezed to ice as the cold wind enwrapped me.
I hadn’t seen her all day, I would have expected at least good luck, as my nerves took over my body every second, and Dumbledore’s powering voice did not help,
“Yesterday, a treasure of sorts was taken from each of the four champions, a treasure that if lost, would be sorely missed, the champions must retrieve their individual treasure from the lake by the hour, or their treasure will be lost forever…”
“ On the sound of the cannon, the champions will begin their search for their stolen treasures”, Dumbledore said ,eyeing Harry as he aggressively choked on some gillyweed.
The cannon went off, and before I knew it, I was lost in a freezing lake surrounded by kelp and the faint sound of singing echoing through my ears.
I swam and swam until I saw a sight that broke my heart.
The girl I loved strapped to a rope, with the eyes I had lovingly stared at so many times sealed shut from my sight.
Swimming with my life and soul, I broke the rope from her ankle, and touched her arctic-like arm, before turning to Harry and warning him about the remaining time.
All I had to do was get us out of there.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Your POV*
I was cold.
Freezing.
I didn’t know where I was.
I didn’t know why I was here.
My heart was racing each second.
I was surrounded by darkness.
I couldn’t breathe.
I didn’t know what to do.
Until I opened my eyes,
And saw those grey orbs staring at me like they had started at me all those times before,
“ It’s ok dove, I have you don’t worry, “ Cedric said, with his arm wrapped around my waist tightly as though he would never let go.
I could hear faint cheering from behind, as a realisation came over me, was I his treasure?”
We swam forwards until we reached the dock, where we were swaddled in towels by Cedric’s friends.
Madame Pomfrey treated us, checking that we didn’t have a fever or any side effects from being in a haunting lake for god knows how long.
All the other champions had come out, Krum with Hermione, Fleur without anyone, as she got lost and couldn’t find her sister, but Harry was nowhere to be seen…
My eyes were trained on the water, waiting for a large splash of black hair to erupt from the water, as I felt a pair of strong eyes on me.
“ I could have lost you ya know, all because of this tournament, “ he said, with that look of utter guilt and sorrow smothered on his perfect face.
“ But you didn’t, you still have me” I said, with my cold hands placing themselves on his jaw,
Going in for a kiss, we heard the splash of three people coming out the water, Ron Weasley, Harry of course, and a small blonde girl, who I assumed was Fleur’s sister.
Caused by the freezing cold and the ringing in my ear, all I could get from Dumbledore’s speech was,
Fleur didn’t manage to rescue her hostage and only got 25 points;
Ced brought me to the up a minute outside the hour, getting 47 points;
Krum was second and got 40 points.
Harry was last, but would have arrived first with Ced but took longer because he saved Fleur’s sister, so he got awarded 45 points, tying him for first place with Ced.
After the rather long announcement, as we walked to the boats, Ced grabbed my arms and kissed me with a loving embrace and pulled away and said,
“You are my treasure, my soul and my life, and I will love you for as long as you will have me”
“ I love you Cedric Diggory”
“ I love you too dove “
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sorry It took me so long to write another fic x
I kind of adoree this one because I’m a speed reader. It seems too quick but I feel quite dramatic though…

PADFOOT RETURNS
Favorite chapter of this book! I don't care you still don't need to know this.
HPHPHPHPHP
Sirius, who clearly still had that last task stuck in his craw, grumbled at Harry, "Well this does prove I was right about Krum, and Cedric. Anyone who leaves those other kids down in that lake are to be avoided by you at all costs."
Lily was frowning down at the little infant in her arms sadly, but still tried for some good, "I don't know Sirius, maybe we were being too harsh on them. Cedric at least, after all, before I heard about Harry's first year it never would have crossed my mind Dumbledore wouldn't put some contingency in place to make sure the unrescued kids came back to the surface. Cedric hasn't had the same bad feelings about Dumbledore recently as we had, I'm sure he just had faith enough not to take that song literally."
Sirius rolled his eyes, clearly not in all agreement, but Remus had a happy smile in place, clearly liking to the idea. "You gave me an interesting idea about Krum as well, what if he saw Dumbledore talking to those merpeople, and pieced the whole thing together from there."
"I can see that," Lily instantly agreed, "he's been staying out on the lake, any Durmstrang student could have seen Dumbledore discussing the task with them, or even more realistically, I'll bet Karkaroff told Krum as soon as he knew that he only had to worry about his one hostage."
"I wouldn't be surprised if Karkaroff did know the others would drown and told Krum to leave them down there anyways," Sirius rolled his eyes at the two of them." *
Harry and James exchanged a look, clearly realizing Sirius was looking to pick a fight, while everyone else just wanted to move on away from that task, so Harry leaned over to Sirius and gently restrained, "I'm positive I'll take your advice as seriously after the task as I did before."
Sirius was instantly derailed, turning back to Harry with a brilliant smile as he declared, "Well how else would you take advice from me?"
Lily and Remus rolled their eyes at him and looked pleadingly at James to go while he had the chance.
James still had a stupid happy smile stuck in place, hoping beyond all measure that Harry would just breeze through the last task and that until that had to arrive they'd spend the rest of his school year hearing of nothing more than homework and actual fun things to laugh about.
One highlight of the aftermath of this task, was Ron getting far more attention than Harry for once.
"Why?" Sirius couldn't help but ask, some nasty memories resurfacing of the last time Ron had been in the limelight, that hadn't been pleasant for Sirius. "Ron was asleep the whole time."
"Everyone saw Fleur kiss him along with Harry," Remus reminded, "and I can all to easily picture Harry shoving Ron in the way when anyone asked why."
People were clamoring to hear his time down in the lake, and at first Ron seemed to be telling the truth. How the teachers had collected them, promised their safety, and he'd awaken when he reached the surface. A week later however, his tale had been embellished to include a fight for his life against a dozen merpeople, single handedly defending all of the women as they forced him under.
"I like the second story better," James beamed. "Its sounds like a thrilling tale."
"Ron's always been the best at those," Sirius snickered in agreement.
He made sure to assure Padma, who'd been much more taken with Ron since all this started, that he'd had the situation under control that whole time.
"Of course," Lily huffed with disgust at such a flighty girl. Ron acting like this was giving her some annoying flashbacks to James as well, so she wasn't going to pretend to enjoy any of this.
Hermione was not as pleased with his little stunts. She'd been snappish lately with all the people mocking her for being Viktor's missing person, and whenever she caught Ron she'd snap all he could do was snore them to submission.
"Teasing might not affect Hermione," James couldn't help a sympathetic smile for her, "but it certainly gets to her."
"Notes for the future," Harry said simply.
Ron blanched in surprise at her quip, and quickly went back to the real version afterwards.
"Least Hermione keeps him in place," Lily approved.
March came with drier weather, but cruel winds skinned their hands and faces every time they went out onto the grounds.
"I miss Quidditch," James sighed.
Owl post was getting delayed slightly by the buffeting winds, but Sirius' brown owl still managed to make a landing the Friday before Hogsmeade. It took off the moment Harry untied the note, clearly not up for making a return trip.
Harry was the only one who gave a laugh, the others were to on edge for the reply. Sirius' last note had not been promising.
This letter was almost as short as the previous one, simply requesting Harry meet him at an old stile in the back of Hogsmeade at two tomorrow, and to bring food.
They all sat there in a bit of dumbfounded silence for a moment.
Lily cracked first, saying with the most sincerity than she ever had in her life, "I am going to strangle you."
"Bring food?" James demanded, his voice cracking on the last word so that he couldn't have continued if he'd wanted to. James felt like an idiot, he'd made the joke himself that Sirius would probably have to steal a cake, but how much was he eating on the run?
Sirius had a torn look on his face, somewhere between he wanted to laugh them all off for thinking he was in danger like his usual idiotic self, and the rest was curiosity. He somehow managed to ask as if for the weather, "wonder what I'm up to."
"Would you please, for just a moment, pretend like this is dangerous," Remus sighed.
Sirius clucked his tongue at him in agitation, stating, "Never stopped me before. I'm just curious what I finally couldn't put in a letter, or maybe I'm just sick of owl post and want to see my Godson."
The baby in Lily's lap had been growing increasingly fussy, so Lily excused herself to put him down for a nap while still muttering about murder.
James fidgeted with the pages until she got back, honestly debating holding him down for her the whole time, but in the end he reminded himself it wouldn't be fair to murder Sirius just for mouthing off in here. In fact James was almost getting his wish, at least Harry and Sirius having a conversation face to face should be some modicum of fun, his best friend was probably right and just wanted to check in on Harry and no one should be looking for him in Hogsmeade, this should turn out fine.
Harry and Hermione were incredulous he'd really come back, but Ron brushed them off and said he'd been away from dementors this long, he obviously knew what he was doing.
"Thank you Ron," Sirius said a little extra loudly, still with an insufferably cocky look in place that no one was going to catch him.
As Harry tucked away his letter, he was surprised that he honestly felt better with the idea of seeing Sirius again.
"Ha!" Sirius barked in triumph, while Harry was in such a good mood with the most recent task finally being over he couldn't do anything but roll his eyes back.
So he headed down to his Potions class in a much better mood than normal.
Of course that was ruined the moment he saw the standard group of Slytherins all standing in a group, snickering over something.
"Well this never starts well," Lily grumbled, clearly the only one clinging to her unease over Sirius. She was equally annoyed at her boys trying to brush this off as a spot of fun, and just as unwilling to argue it otherwise. She relinquished Sirius had been out long enough it wasn't one hundred percent suicidal to come back, more like seventy five.
Pansy caught sight of them first, gesturing wildly at them to get the others attention.
"I'm with Lily," Remus groaned, "prepare to be annoyed just by that."
Harry saw a magazine in her hands, Witch Weekly.
"Guess that's better than the Daily Prophet," Sirius narrowed his eyes shrewdly.
"Not by much," James grumbled.
Then Pansy gave the paper a toss to Hermione, telling her she should have a good read of it. At that moment Snape opened the door, and they all had to file in.
"Of course this had to happen inside there," Sirius snapped, "at least when this stuff comes up in Care of Creatures you know Hagrid'll back you up."
"I'm sure they planned it this way just for that," Lily sniffed.
The three friends set up their cauldrons in the back of the room like always, but instead of pulling out their ingredients they all leaned over Hermione's magazine as she riffled through it.
The piece wasn't hard to find, another photo of Harry was spotted over the title Harry Potter's Secret Heartache. The article starts by reminding everyone that Harry had grown up without love while being deprived of his parents,
Lily and James flushed in hatred already for this, did that have to keep coming up!
was at least equaled out with the love he'd seemed to find in his school life was Hermione Granger.
"Didn't this already come up?" Sirius scoffed, "Skeeter must be running out of material if she's rehashing your love life."
"Let's hope she just runs out altogether soon," Harry sighed.
Sadly for Harry, he may not even be aware of his own suffering. Miss Granger, a plain but ambitious girl,
"She needs to keep her own story straight," Remus reminded, "she keeps changing her own description of just how pretty she thinks Hermione is."
"We've well established her facts change to fit her story," Lily huffed.
had recently been seen in more company of Viktor Krum. Clearly the girl had a love of famed Quidditch players, though it was clear neither boy knew of the other. Krum himself had been heard saying he'd never felt this way about another girl, even inviting her to his country over the summer.
The real crux was, it most likely wasn't Miss Granger's charm the cause of this.
Skeeter had interviewed a few students to get the real story, and Pansy Parkinson had happily stepped up in the story to report how intelligent Hermione was, it was more than possible Hermione was using Love Potions on these boys.
Love Potions were banned at Hogwarts of course, and this reporter only hoped the matter would be looked into soon before someone's heart was broken forever.
"That's all there is," James finished with a disappointed shake in his head, "thankfully. I'm relieved, I was fixing to start laughing at how ridiculous that was."
"I can still see why Skeeter tried to go that way for Hermione," Lily shook her head furiously, "that really would be traumatizing for some girls to have that printed about them."
"Hopefully Hermione'll take this as she did the other one," Remus said.
Ron was furious for Hermione, even as he couldn't stop an I told you so for her. Skeeter had gone and printed this about Hermione, turning her into a scarlet woman.
"Well he's not wrong," Lily couldn't resist a smile for Ron.
Hermione stopped looking down at the paper and began to laugh at Ron's choice of words, now shaking with giggles.
"I'm sure that's the exact reaction Skeeter was hoping Hermione would have," James beamed with pride.
"Laughing in the face of it all," Sirius agreed at once, "best way to face life."
"You're still not off the hook mister," Lily told him at once. "If you get yourself caught and killed for being an idiot, I'm going to kill you."
"And just what's it to you?" Sirius demanded with an impetuous smirk, clearly all at ease with digging his own grave.
"It means a great deal to me," Remus sniffed back, his mind scrambling to play this off and blast away the worry really eating at them. "As I take great comfort in knowing it'll be my hand that'll be the death of you one day."
Sirius most likely would have kept going, for some deranged reason he seemed to feel the way to make them feel better was throwing out more jokes at this, but James was in no way amused and kept reading loudly around them.
Ron said that's what his mum called them.
Hermione was not impressed, saying if that was the best Skeeter could do, she'd lost her touch.
"As if she ever had one," Lily scoffed, "so far all of her stories have been nothing but dribble."
The Slytherins were watching her expectantly for a reaction, but Hermione simply waved pleasantly at them.
"Never let it be said Hermione doesn't know how to play a situation," James smiled happily at the girl.
The three finally began on their potion for today, a Wit-Sharpening Potion.
Only a few minutes in though, Hermione began how odd it was
"That Snape's never used that Wit-Sharpening Potion on himself," Remus offered with wide eyed innocence.
about Skeeter knowing...
When she trailed off, Ron quickly yelped in surprise if she had been making Love Potions?
"That was his first thought?" James snorted.
"Not that I believe she'd do it," Lily shrugged, "but I'd be the last person to be surprised that she could. Ron would know the same thing."
Hermione snapped at him for being stupid, no what she was surprised was how Skeeter knew about Krum inviting her to Bulgaria.
"I thought that was just more made up stuff," Sirius said in surprise.
She was blushing in embarrassment by the end of admitting to this.
Ron dropped his pestle in shock as he looked at her.
Hermione tried to ignore this and quickly got the whole thing out, telling out he'd asked her just after he'd pulled her out of the lake.
Ron demanded what her answer was, now trying to grind up his desk more than his ingredients.
All four of them were snickering now, though at least trying to hide it at Harry's bewildered stare. He wasn't sure if they were laughing at Ron or something else altogether like he was thinking, but did not want to discuss it.
Hermione tried to ignore him, unsuccessfully by going all the more red, as she agreed he'd been quoted saying he'd never felt this way about another girl.
"I cannot believe she's actually admitting this to them," Remus shook his head.
"This is why Hermione needs some friends who are girls," Lily sighed for the poor thing. She knew full well how that could feel.
That didn't explain how Skeeter knew this, she hadn't been around when Krum had said that, no one had. Perhaps she'd had an Invisibility Cloak on and was sneaking around?
"Would not put it past her," James grumbled.
Ron repeatedly demanded what her answer to Krum had been, knocking the desk so hard with his pestle he put a dent in it.
"I'm thinking Ron wants an answer to that," Sirius raised a brow.
"What on earth gave you that idea?" James kept trying to repress giggles while continuing.
Hermione began to admit that she hadn't a chance to answer before Harry appeared- but was cut off by Snape saying from behind them that he was docking ten points from Gryffindor for discussing their business in his class.
Amusement instantly gone and snatched away because of that insect, no one had the heat to snap at him this time, it went without saying at this point.
The whole class turned as Snape hovered over the three of them, Harry getting another wave of POTTER STINKS badges from Malfoy.
"Might as well glue that to his arse, or his forehead, same thing at this point," Sirius huffed.
Snape caught sight of the magazine, docking another ten points for having this in class, then finding the article and even reading the title out loud.
Lily was gnashing her teeth furiously to hold back the abundance of things she'd like to throw in his face for all the petty comments. It was sick how he was living his dream come true, being able to humiliate her son at every opportunity, when most likely he was really looking down on James in all these moments.
The dungeon rang with the Slytherins' laughter, and an unpleasant smile curled Snape's thin mouth. Going one step further, Snape then began to read the article aloud.
"I-He!" Remus spluttered, sure he must have heard that one wrong.
"There's logic for you," James lip curled, "he took their points away for reading it, and then reads it. Remind me again why I never got around to blowing this one to Norway?"
"Don't ask me mate," Sirius was glaring at nothing and not even pretending it was a joke, "I suggested at least once a week we hogtie him and leave him to the Forest, but no one would let me do it."
"Next time you get the opportunity," Remus told him sincerely, "I'll run interference while you get the rope."
They snarked on long enough at the injustice of this, but James forced himself to reread that bilge through Snape.
The whole thing came across ten times worse in Snape's cruel tones.
When he was done, Snape came to the conclusion it was time to split these three up to keep them on their work. He made Ron stay where he was, moved Hermione to sit by Pansy,
"Please tell me Hermione's brilliant enough to make that blow up without her noticing," Lily pleaded of nothing.
and put Harry in the table in front of his desk.
"I'll pause for the miracle he didn't put him beside Malfoy," James groaned, an honest toss up of which would have been worse, Harry next to him or continued interaction with Snape!
Harry furiously obeyed, dragging his cauldron to the front and slamming into his new seat to continue his potion.
Snape retook his seat but Harry refused to look up at him, determined not to give Snape the satisfaction of seeing how angry he was as he began smashing his own scarab beetles, imagining each one as Snape's face.
"You know what, I like Harry's idea better," Sirius nodded along. "It'd be much more personal and fun to turn him into a potion ingredient."
"Won't deny loving the irony of that," James agreed.
Snape began whispering for Harry's ears alone how all of this press attention was inflating his already large head.
Harry denied response, he knew Snape was trying to provoke him, he'd done so before.
"When did Snape provoke you before?" Lily cast her mind back. "He seems much more fond of humiliating the life out of you and then docking points."
"When he found out I had the Map," Harry reminded, "tried to get me into admitting I'd been visiting Hogsmeade."
"Oh yeah," she rolled her eyes at that resurfacing memory of him taking potshots at James. The incident with Remus afterwards had burned that away a bit.
No doubt Snape was hoping to take a whole fifty points from Gryffindor before class was up.
"The day is just wasted if you haven't," Sirius scowled.
Snape persisted in saying that Harry may be delusional enough to think the whole world was in love with him, ignoring the fact that Harry had long since turned his beetles into a fine powder, but Snape knew better. He didn't care how many times Harry was in the papers,
"Really?" Harry mock outraged with as much sarcasm as he could muster. "Because I've been putting in so much hard work to garner his approval!"
"It's too bad you can't say things like that to him without risking detention," Remus sighed.
"The detention would be worth it," Sirius huffed.
Potter would always be a nasty little boy who gave no consideration to the rules.
Harry finally gave his powder to his potion and turned on his roots instead, his hand shaking so bad the cuts weren't nearly as precise as they should be. Still he refused to respond and give Snape the satisfaction.
"I'm glad you're taking Hermione's path at least," Lily sighed, "he'll get less satisfaction if you act like he's not getting to you."
"Much more self-satisfying to get him back later, when he's lesser expecting it," James mock agreed with his wife, though she wasn't going to argue with him.
Snape promised this warning, if he ever caught Harry breaking into his office one more time-
"He's never broken into your office period," Remus said like speaking to an idiotic child.
"Technically," Sirius added on with a faint smile, "and Snape can't prove otherwise."
"That was two years ago though," James cocked his head to the side, "or is he really blaming Harry for, well whatever that mess with Crouch was."
"He blames everything on me," Harry reminded.
"I'm sure he's tried to get you expelled for every instance that went on at school, and at some point Dumbledore just stopped opening the door for him," James said wistfully, thinking about slamming a door in his face as well, or more on his face.
Harry snapped at that, saying he'd never been in Snape's office.
Snape's black eyes glowed with hatred as he hissed back all of his missing supplies, the Boomslang skin and Gillyweed, all from his private cupboards.
"Wait, now I'm confused," Lily made a rewind motion. "Dobby took the Gillyweed, but what's this about the Boomslang skin? Again, that happened years ago, I'm blasted he's really connecting the events."
"Again," Remus pointed out, "he clearly blames Harry for everything that goes wrong in his life, and I'm not really surprised if he's been in waiting to throw this at him since he found out."
"But it is rather odd," James had his head cocked to the side, "he's talking like this happened when Crouch was in his office, but he can't have stolen either of those, it doesn't add up."
"With what?" Sirius demanded of him. "We never even found out why he was there in the first place."
"What are the odds Crouch happened to steal the exact ingredient Harry had need of, and something he also stole two years ago," Lily said back.
Sirius had no reply, none of them did. This was such an inane mystery no one even had a clue how to begin to puzzle it out.
Harry stared back with a blank face, refusing to acknowledge this. It was in fact Hermione and Dobby who Snape should really be looking to, but Harry wasn't going to be saying that. Instead he lied, stating he had no clue about anything.
Snape hissed back he knew Harry was out of bed that night his office had been ransacked.
"While he's technically not wrong about that," Remus rolled his eyes.
"He still has no proof it was Harry," Sirius finished for him. "There are three other champions that egg could have belonged to, but of course he's still convinced, without proof, it was Harry."
Lily wanted to scold him this time it was good enough evidence, the map and the egg together wouldn't leave an idiot stumped, but that wasn't Sirius' point and she knew it.
Snape had no clue why Moody had joined Potter's fan club,
"Oh, do we finally have proof that exists," James asked mildly. "What did Colin and Ginny name it anyways?"
"Potter Doesn't Really Stink," Sirius offered to Harry's trying to ignore them both, about as successfully as he'd been ignoring Snape.
but even he couldn't save Harry from Snape when he caught him.
"About as thoroughly as he has in the past," Remus stated with a winning smile, making them all give a hearty laugh in appreciation for that; because Harry hadn't ever technically been in trouble for any of this.
Harry mildly agreed he'd keep that in mind if ever he had a wish to go for Snape's office.
"You just know it's on his top ten list," Sirius nodded along.
"Right up there with going back into the Forest, going to another Death Day party, and going back to the Chamber," Remus agreed.
Snape's eyes flashed, his hand tucked inside his robes, and for an actual moment Harry was sure Snape was about to curse him.
"I'll skin him alive," Lily said dangerously, wishing now more than ever she could leave these walls for the simple use of acting on that.
Instead he pulled out a clear bottle that looked like it held water. Snape asked if Harry knew what this was.
This time, completely honestly, Harry said no.
"Not that it's ever stopped you before," James said.
Snape explained it was Veritaserum, a Truth Potion so powerful just three drops and Harry would spill every secret he'd ever had.
"And illegal to use on the unwitting," Lily hissed.
Harry ruffled his brows at her, casting his mind back to a not at all pleasant conversation where he'd try to offer ideas to prove Sirius' innocence. This potion had come up, and he asked, "If you can't use it on people on trial because they're expecting it, and you can't use it on someone who isn't expecting it, what's it used for?"
"Nothing," Lily deflated a bit at talking to her son, though venom was still clear in her tone even not directed at him. "It's basically illegal to even own any amount unless you have specific license to study under a few fields. Snape would be allowed to have some I suppose, being a potion's teacher and all, but that doesn't give him the right to use it on anyone!" She finished, trying to force herself not to shout there at the end.
"Dumbledore wouldn't let him use it," Remus offered without any real hope.
"Dumbledore should be stopping a lot of things that keep happening," Sirius snapped back bitterly.
Snape conceded there were many restrictions placed on the use of this potion, but one day Snape's hand may just slip over Potter's evening drink.
"And ironically," Lily put her hands up in exasperation, "Snape still wouldn't get his end results."
"Though a few worse things would come out than breaking into a teacher's office," James muttered, keeping a careful eye on his best friend.
Harry turned away with false indifference, ignoring how uncomfortable that potion made him feel. Snape may not get the confession he'd be wanting, but Harry knew how much trouble not only his friends would be in, but also far worse things could happen. Like his admission to being in contact with Sirius, and his crush on Cho.
Sirius couldn't help it, he broke all tension in the room by snorting with laughter, and not stopping there by doubling over and still holding his sides with amusement.
Harry was bright scarlet already, trying in vain to get James to keep going who was paying him no attention, clearly just as amused as Padfoot that Harry's embarrassment over that crush ranked right up there with the fear of his Godfather getting caught. Good to know where Harry's priorities were at least.
It took Sirius quite some time to settle back down, rubbing happily at his chest and ignoring the exasperated looks of the others at such an overreaction. "Thanks pup, I needed that."
"You are not welcome," Harry grumbled back.
He put his roots into his potion and began stirring, his mind on Moody's idea to start drinking out of his own hip flask for a while.
"While I wouldn't blame you if you did," Remus shook his head with amusement, "I more recommend just asking the house-elves to special make you meals. Gives you a much less paranoid vibe."
"I'll keep that in mind," Harry did manage a smile for him.
A knock on the door stopped either from saying anything else as Snape called for entrance in a more normal voice.
"So, dark and creepy," James nodded along.
Karkaroff came in.
"Well, well," Sirius raised a brow. "Evil plotting in front of the kiddies now? Poor form on their part."
"I will strangle you," Lily promised, still unable to grasp how he could make light of Death Eaters around Harry.
"What?" Sirius defend himself at once. "They're not actually going to do anything to Harry in that classroom, but Harry might pick up on something else they could be up to."
Remus wanted to remind him they most likely had already done something to Harry, they were their number one suspects on who'd entered Harry into this tournament, but he wasn't going to argue with Sirius now and begged Lily not to bother while James ignored them all.
Everyone watched as he came up to Snape's desk, clearly trying to be as quiet as possible as he whispered they needed to talk.
"Then he should have done this after the fact," James rolled his eyes, "in Snape's oh so important office."
"Be happy intelligence is failing them," Sirius waved him off.
Harry still pretended he wasn't listening as he kept at his ingredients, but still clearly heard Snape's hissing response to deal with this after class.
Karkaroff refused, saying he was tired of Snape slipping away and avoiding him.
"I would too," Remus quipped, but was watching the book curiously now, all of them wondering what they could be squabbling about.
Snape repeated they would talk after the lesson.
While Harry raised his measuring cup full of armadillo bile up to the light to check the correct measurement,
"Subtleness you were excelling at I'm sure," Remus smirked.
"You ever wonder how they get some of these ingredients?" Sirius muttered to Harry.
"Detention from Snape I'm sure," Harry said back, thinking it would be just that kind of punishment for Snape to make armadillos appear just to have them vomiting their bile for the students to collect.
Harry peaked at the pair. Karkaroff looked worried, Snape angry.
Karkaroff stayed hovering over Snape's desk for the rest of class, and determined to know what they were talking about, Harry knocked over the rest of his armadillo bile with a minute to go before class let out and quickly bent down to mop it up while the rest of the class fled the room.
"That was brilliant," James praised.
"Absolute credit for sneakiness with an excuse," Sirius agreed.
Snape demanded what Karkaroff thought was so urgent? Karkaroff declared this!
Harry peeked around his cauldron to see Karkaroff had pulled up his left sleeve to show Snape something Harry couldn't see.
Remus cocked his head to the side with a calculating look in place. "Wasn't that the same arm Snape grabbed when Moody made a crack at him about marks?"
"You think him and Karkaroff got matching tattoos?" Sirius asked in disbelief.
"I think it's strange something's clearly bothering both of these Death Eater's," Lily agreed mildly even if she did think the arm thing was a slim attachment.
Of course, they all knew something was stirring, Voldemort was trying to make a return and even if Harry hadn't been having any more dreams about it, and thank Merlin for that and it not happening any time soon, it was still the most unsettling thing to happen thus far. Could these two be talking about that? It really was hard to come up with anything else this could be about, but what would something on their arms be about?
Karkaroff insisted it was clearer than ever, it hadn't been like this since-
Snape snapped at him to put that away, turning a nastier face on Harry and demanding to know what he was still doing in here?
Harry showed his sodden rag he was cleaning with,
"I'm so sure he appreciates your cleanliness," James scowled, his mind still flagging in frustration he couldn't put this together. This could be something really important, and they were all clearly missing something.
but Snape snapped at him to get lost. Harry quickly vacated the room to tell Ron and Hermione what he'd seen.
"Which was what exactly?" Lily groaned in frustration.
Next day they left for Hogsmeade, the weather finally slowing enough that it was actually a beautiful day.
This wasn't making anyone's mood feel any better. Despite the Snape distraction, no one could get over how worrisome it felt to have Sirius back in the picture like this. Danger kept screaming at every corner of their mind, and yet at the same time none of them would selfishly admit it would be good just to hear about him again not on the run or as a convict. Just Padfoot trying to spend some time with Harry for a day.
The food Sirius had asked for was tucked in Harry's bag, a dozen chicken legs, a loaf of bread, and a jug of pumpkin juice.
Sirius still fidgeted uneasily a bit at such an odd request from himself, he wasn't liking where this was headed right off the bat.
First they headed for a shop to get Dobby those promised socks, enjoying themselves by picking out the most outlandish ones they could find, including ones that screamed at you if you didn't wash them regularly enough.
"Not a bad start," James nodded along, "but you've got about three hundred more pairs to go to get to that every day of the year promise."
"I decided I'd build up to it," Harry grinned, "I need to get him future gifts after all, no sense in doing it all at once." He finished with an almost vacant look at the end, his innards squirming a warning he'd better get Dobby those socks while he had a chance.
"That's cheating," Sirius wagged his finger at the half finished return to keep Harry's attention, but agreed with a smile, "I'm so proud."
As the time came, they made their way to the stile. Harry had never been this far into Hogsmeade before,
All three boys made choking noises of disbelief at that declaration, it still blew their mind Harry didn't know the grounds of that place like they did.
and the place looked far more deserted with a long winding road and being right at the base of a mountain.
A small gate closed off the borders of the village, and leaning on said gate with large paws and a shaggy coat was a familiar dog.
Harry happily greeted Sirius.
Lily was shaking her head fondly, like she'd still been futilely hoping this whole time Sirius wouldn't be stupid enough to come, and even more pleased he had.
Harry couldn't help but compare that lean, wild looking animal to the happy pooch he'd seen in this living room days ago, trying to comfort him in his fear of what would happen to Sirius. The contrast between the same dog was as vivid as the cocky, self-assured Godfather sitting at his side, ready to joke his way to the end, and the gaunt faced criminal Harry only had memory of seeing smile once.
The black dog sniffed Harry's bag eagerly, wagged his tail once, then turned and began to trot away from them across the scrubby patch of ground that rose to meet the rocky foot of the mountain.
"Wait a minute," Remus said slowly, "you're not really..." he trailed off in disbelief as he kept watching Sirius.
"Don't know how regularly," Sirius shrugged, "but I'm even more pleased if so. It'll be much more fun to talk to Harry rather than just following him around."
"I don't understand," Lily was frowning, looking from Sirius to his two friends suspiciously.
"That mountain's got all sorts of caves and hiding spots," James told her and Harry. "We explored them all the time, even kept a stash of stuff up there when we didn't want to get caught with it. When we found Sirius wasn't staying in the Shack, I honestly thought this was where he was spending his time last year."
Lily gnawed on her lip a bit, but decided this was actually fairly out of the way of the school, and if the Marauders said they'd explored this place than that meant they knew it better than the surrounding villagers. Plus, if Dumbledore even knew Sirius was staying there, and warned people to stay away from the area, well this was honestly looking like almost a good idea. Then she realized what she was thinking, and chose not to say anything aloud, still not wanting to give that idiot the impression she approved of him being in the country at all.
The three followed him up the steep path, having to climb over boulders and struggling to keep up with the more assured four legged one, as they sweated under the sun and the straps of Harry's bag cut into his shoulders.
"If I'd known there'd be a hike, I'd have left the jug behind," Harry winced and rubbed at his shoulders in remembrance.
"I honestly forget what it's like to try on two legs," Sirius answered honestly, and with a bit of pity. "We didn't really go all through these places until we changed."
Finally the dog vanished into a crevice, and the three wiggled inside to see a spacious cave with Buckbeak tied to a corner.
"So you did actually keep him," Remus chuckled. "I never again want to hear you mock me for bringing home strays."
"Not happening Moony," Sirius shot back at once. "This beast saved my life, the least I can do is keep him around. You dragging in all manner of destruction into our flat with your creature of the month have yet to do the same."
Remus opened his mouth, to argue the point or give another sarcastic response James didn't want to listen to for once, he was too anxious to hear how Sirius was doing in person. That food comment was still lingering badly at the edge of his mind.
All three bowed to the hippogriff, who obliged back, and while Hermione rushed forward to pat him in greeting, Harry turned eyes on his godfather. Sirius was wearing the same ragged garb he'd had on the night he escaped Azkaban,
They all winced, that wasn't a great start, though no real surprise as it probably would have been a chore at best to steal anything better. Most likely if he wasn't on Buckbeak he was Padfoot, so it wasn't even the largest of deals in the grand scheme, but even something as little as this struck deep.
his hair was a long tangle mess again, and he looked extremely thin.
Lily made a noise she knew she wouldn't deny even if she'd been called out on. All her blustering and scolding aside, she was as distraught as the boys at the idea of what Sirius had really been living through.
James and Remus looked like they'd swallowed a lemon at the idea, not even being subtle as they kept a steady eye on their Sirius, here and now looking grumpy but still his usual self. He didn't even seem to realize he kept running his hand through his hair, as if to keep himself in check this wasn't some nasty new form of a mirror being put on him.
He was sitting on the ground, spitting a few newspapers out of his mouth he'd been carrying this whole time, and turned to Harry asking about the chicken he smelled.
'Missed you to Sirius,' Harry thought to himself, not looking to meet anyone's eyes. He still felt responsible for Sirius being in these conditions, and the fact that his Godfathers first request had been for food rather than an actual greeting spoke every level of how horrible it had been.
Harry handed over the bag, and Sirius began digging in at once, while thanking for the food, admitting he'd actually been living on rats.
James hardly got that out before revulsion hit and his throat retched.
"There's some kind of irony in that I'm sure," Sirius said with pure viciousness in his voice as he took in all the disgusted faces around him.
"Sirius-" Remus began weakly, but Sirius cut him off snappishly.
"What? You lot going to sit around and tell me how sorry you are for me? Like that's going to help? Let it go will you, it's my decision."
While true, this didn't make what they were hearing any better, so still fighting down the impulse to run to the kitchen and get Sirius a snack while he had to listen to this, James forced himself to keep going.
He admitted he couldn't be stealing too much food from Hogsmeade, he didn't want to draw attention to himself.
Lily kept a watchful eye on him, waiting for him to start up his bragging that of course he was smart enough to think ahead like this, clearly waiting for someone to mock him to the contrary, but when no one did he instead intensified his glare at all of them so that he actually looked pretty scary. It was clear he was growing sick of their trying to baby him, but none of them were going to be able to shake it off any time soon.
He gave Harry a grin, who only reluctantly returned it.
Harry demanded why Sirius was even here, and Sirius said back he was doing his job as godfather, while gnawing on the chicken bone in a very doglike way.
"Least some things don't change," James shook his head fondly, Sirius had done that long before he'd been an animagus, though he'd admitted he'd donned the habit more in protest of his mother's precious table manners than anything.
Sirius looked pleased enough at the comment, at least his best friend wasn't all doom and gloom.
Sirius told Harry not to worry about it, everyone around here found him a lovable stray. He kept grinning, but when the anxiety didn't leave Harry's face, he kept going seriously
Sirius released a bark of triumphant laughter, clearly never growing tired of when Harry did this the most, before turning to his pup and stating, "no need for the clarification, I say everything Seriously."
"You're right Prongs," Remus groaned, "but sometimes I wish that joke would change."
"Not happening," Sirius stated proudly.
that Harry's last letter had left him uneasy. The papers weren't helping anything, clearly something was getting fishy around here.
He nodded at the yellowing newspapers, which Ron went to investigate.
Harry kept watching Sirius, asking what would happen if someone spotted him.
Sirius waved that off, saying the three of them and Dumbledore were the only ones who knew he was here and that he was an Animagus, still tearing off large pieces of chicken between every word.
Ron got Harry's attention by showing him the headlines, one of which covered the mystery of Crouch's disease,
"One of the symptoms being night time wanderings," Sirius rolled his eyes, still finding this much more fun to think about than himself.
and the other still over the missing Ministry Employee, and that the Minister himself was now looking into it.
"I'm honestly impressed," Lily arched a brow. "Why's she getting so much attention? People have gone missing before."
"Most likely, after ah, this time," Remus wasn't quite sure how to phrase that and since they got the gist he quickly moved past, "I'm sure if it did happen, at least someone could offer up some sort of explanation. As far as we know, she's gone without a single trace. That is media worthy."
"I'd almost rather not have the answer to this one," Sirius shivered for the poor thing.
Harry read the Crouch one first, looking up when he was done about how they made it seem like he was dying.
Ron told Sirius about how Percy was Crouch's underlying, and he just wrote it all off as being overworked.
Harry disagreed, saying how bad he'd looked that night of the Goblet.
Hermione just said it was his own comeuppance for how he'd treated Winky.
"I'm thinking this might be a bit more than that," James shook his head fondly
"Hermione'll just take any excuse to change the subject to house-elves," Sirius snorted.
Saying how she was sure he was regretting his harsh actions now.
Ron informed Sirius about Hermione's house-elf obsession, but rather than exasperated like Ron, Sirius looked intrigued as he asked about Crouch sacking his elf.
"That would be news to me," Sirius agreed, he still found the instance odd, and he'd already heard about it.
Harry recounted the whole Dark Mark event for him.
Sirius pulled yet more chicken out as he made sure he got the whole thing cleared up, clearly being the most interested in Crouch not even appearing at the event of the Cup.
Harry agreed he'd stated he was too busy to come at the time.
Sirius got to his feet as he sucked on the marrow, muttering to himself for a moment before asking Harry if he'd checked his pockets for his wand before he'd left the Top Box?
"Why would you ask?" Remus asked slowly.
"Not really sure," Sirius was frowning at nothing as he tried to guess at his own train of thought...no matter how odd that was.
Harry thought back and admitted he hadn't checked until he'd needed it later, then asking of Sirius if he really thought the caster of the Mark had been in the Top Box?
"Even Sirius wouldn't make such a suicidal leap," Lily dissed the idea.
"If the Malfoy's hadn't been confirmed in with the other Death Eaters, I might argue the point," Remus said fairly.
"But there's no one else up there who could have done it," James agreed.
"Unless Winky stole it for someone," Sirius offered, his brow still ruffled as he tried to put it together.
James scoffed at the idea, saying, "Unless Crouch told her to, I don't buy that. She was clearly all loyal to him, that sounds like a Dobby stunt."
Sirius ran out of ideas, it really didn't make much sense, but something had happened in between it being in Harry's possession and it casting the Mark, they just had not a single clue of what. Harry wasn't helping anyone, arms crossed in a huffy manner as he was well aware the answer was somewhere in Sirius' line of thinking.
Sirius agreed there was a good chance, and Hermione at once snapped it hadn't been Winky!
Sirius agreed she hadn't been the only one up there, asking for a list of everyone.
When Harry recounted the Malfoy's name, Ron suddenly got the idea that it could have been Lucius all along.
Sirius didn't seem to think so, as he asked for anyone else present.
"Well you clearly don't think much of the idea," Remus pointed out.
"Which is a bit off from you," Lily shook her head.
"If Harry explained the whole thing, including Draco telling of his parents being in the Death Eater crowd," Sirius shrugged them off.
"They still seem the most likely," James sighed, then his eyes brightened with understanding, but not pleasure as he offered, "what if it was a handoff. Who wants to put money Karkaroff could have been at that game, supporting his number one student."
They all swallowed that for a moment, but Harry shook his head first, saying very slowly so as not to agitate himself, "I don't think, I mean, I like to think I'd have recognized the voice, and I still haven't heard it since that night."
It was thin, someone shouting a curse could still manage to sound different enough from just casual speaking, but if Harry was disagreeing with an idea, it was best not to argue the point.
When Harry finished, Hermione also pointed out Bagman in the end.
Sirius kept up his pacing and stated all he knew of him was that he was an old Beater.
The four of them felt themselves sink just that little bit lower, again. First the dragons, now this, had Azkaban taken everything away from Sirius? Something of his old Quidditch love and idol of a player should have sparked a life in him at the mention of that name, not just that.
Sirius asked if they'd had any more contact with him, and Harry admitted Bagman had been trying to help Harry out with the Tournament, said he'd taken a liking to Harry.
Hermione pointed out they'd seen him just before the Mark was cast and he disapparated, but Ron said it was ludicrous to think Bagman had done this.
"I can't really buy that," Lily shook her head. "He's been a bit of an idiot, one too many bludgers honestly, but I don't think he's Death Eater material."
Something buzzed in the back of Harry's skull, and for some odd reason his mind flickered to Skeeter, and something she'd said about Bagman...
Hermione stubbornly said back she thought Bagman was still more likely than Winky.
"That I'll give her," James snorted.
Ron looking imploringly at Sirius as he repeated Hermione's obsession with elves.
Sirius though waved Ron silent.
"I'm impressed he listened," Remus couldn't help a little smirk at Sirius. "Looks like you've gotten marginally more menacing to stop someone."
"Wish it would work on you," Sirius grumbled at him.
Sirius instead turned back to Harry and asked what Crouch had done after his elf had been discovered under it.
Harry told how he'd gone through the bushes looking for someone else, and found no one.
Harry still felt like someone had snapped a rubber band on his nose, something in there was a lie, but all he got for it was rubbing in agitation at his temple and ignoring the moment.
Sirius agreed that was in line, Crouch would want to pin this on anyone else but his elf.
Hermione instantly agreed, saying he'd been wrong to sack his elf just for running from that stampeding crowd.
Ron snapped at her to give those elves a rest!
"I can see Ron's point," James said around twitching lips, "I'm sure he's heard this a million times by now, and Sirius has much more important things to be asking than house-elves."
Sirius seemed to be on Hermione's side though, telling Ron that she had a better idea of how Crouch was than Ron. If you wanted to know what a man was like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.
Lily couldn't stop a violent, and rather vindictive, snort as she looked disbelievingly at him for that one. "You did not just say that with a straight face? After the way you've gone on about elves, I thought you'd be cheering Ron on."
Sirius had a little sneer in place for her benefit as he corrected, "I hate my elf, with good reason. That doesn't mean I'm not going to think less of someone doing the same to theirs if it hasn't done anything wrong. That's sound advice woman, you should be thanking me for bestowing that on your son."
Lily raked her hand through her hair instead of slapping Sirius for the pompous attitude, she found him being a hypocrite more in that moment than wise like he clearly thought himself, but truth be told he wasn't wrong either. Sirius had every right to hate his house-elf in particular at least, but from what she'd gathered he'd clearly treated the ones at Hogwarts with at least as much respect as the rest of the staff, if not more for the free food, which was saying something.
He ran a hand over his unshaven face, evidently thinking hard.
Sirius waited impatiently for a sarcastic comment from anybody asking how hard that was, a witty retort already in place, and was all the more frustrated when it didn't come. Couldn't these guys chill for just one second? They had no problems taking the mickey out of him in here, but clearly none of them were going to be mocking his future self...which still hurt his brain to think about so he let it go.
He was still stuck on the idea of Crouch, saying all of these absences of his from events he'd had such a huge hand in putting together wasn't like him at all. If he'd ever missed a day of work because he was sick, Sirius would eat Buckbeak.
"Best way you could have put that, past the lovely sentiment," Lily crinkled her nose at him.
Harry was surprised that Sirius seemed to know Crouch personally.
Sirius' face darkened so much, that between the menacing scowl and the dark lighting, he looked truly like the murderer Harry had once believed him to be.
Five faces lost every last drop of color at that sentiment, one question on all of their lips, what had Crouch done to Sirius?
He whispered for their benefit that he only knew Crouch as the man who'd put him in Azkaban without a trial.
Sirius' mouth flopped open in shock, mingled disbelief and hatred suddenly burning away any trace of his joking bravado nature. It was now all too clear to Harry that was indeed an expression of one who could actually go and kill someone, and Sirius had just been given a motive.
"He what?" Lily hissed, the fire blazing in her green eyes matched only by her hair. "They couldn't really, there's no way they-"
"I'm going to kill him," James vowed on the spot. He didn't remember getting to his feet, but he was suddenly pacing all around the room, his wand tapping furiously on his hip and clearly hoping to use it on the first available target. He spat in the fireplace as he passed it but that relieved nothing, he could not get this out of his head!
Remus' lower lip was trembling, it was unclear whether he was fixing to cry or scream. Mostly he just looked diminished. He couldn't help his mind scattering to the first person that he would have called to for help with this, but Dumbledore had actually allowed this to happen! He was Supreme Mugwump, Crouch may have held off the trial but he would have had to pass it by Dumbledore to be skipped, which had never been passed in their history! Even someone brought in as a confirmed and known Death Eater was granted a trial, but Sirius hadn't even been given that! What the bloody hell was the matter with this! It only marginally explained their earlier plights and complaints that Sirius shouldn't have been sent there at all, one moment in front of an actual person should have proven Sirius' innocence, now they all realized he' never even been allowed that chance!
While Harry knew he was just as angry as the rest of them, he tried to keep some perspective. While outraged on behalf of Sirius for this slight, Harry just knew there was something important about this conversation, something Sirius was going to tell him that would make all the difference to this year. He really didn't want to be the one to call attention to himself, any of them were likely to spring into deadly action at a moment's notice now, but it spoke volumes of Harry's time here when he cleared his throat and hardly winced at all eyes falling on him. "I am begging you guys to remember this hasn't technically happened yet," he gestured vaguely to his still fuming godfather. "Crouch'll never get the chance to do this to him," he promised with much more conviction than he felt.
No one looked appeased enough to move past this, James was still pacing manically around the room and looked as likely to kiss Snape as pretend this wasn't going to weigh on him whether it had technically happened yet or not. Sirius should never have been in Azkaban to begin with, that thought had never once left his mind since he'd heard about this, and yet somehow the level of bad got worse at this news. He didn't know how to go back to simply reading a book after this kind of news, he was entirely certain he couldn't get the words out anyways through his red vision.
The book had been left in James's vacant seat, and Harry uneasily reached for it like it was the Monster Book of Monsters, ready to bite his hand the moment he touched the cover. No one made to stop him, though a few throats vibrated a warning growl that promised screaming would resume at a moment's notice. Harry's fingers fumbled across several pages, possibly earning a few paper cuts as he found his place, but that Gryffindor bravery, or thickness he was sure Ron would say, shone through as he forced himself to go on in this atmosphere.
The three of them gasped in surprise, while Harry demanded to know if he was kidding, but Sirius simply said he wasn't while taking another bite of food.
Harry paused hopefully, though in vain. He'd been hoping at least Sirius, who'd laughed off plenty of terrible things before, would at least make a crack he could discuss anything over food, but clearly it was not to be forthcoming.
Crouch had been head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement at the time.
"He won't be holding that position long when I get a hold of him," Lily snarled. She'd put up with his horrid ways for long enough because he'd been using them against Death Eaters, proven Death Eaters! This was, unprecedented!
He'd even been tipped for the next Minister of Magic. Crouch was a powerful wizard,
"Bet you nearly bit your tongue off getting that out," Remus sighed, his voice still coming out so quiet no one was really sure what he'd said and didn't ask for a repeat.
and power hungry. He caught the look on Harry's face and quickly corrected he was no Voldemort supporter, Crouch was the opposite. Then again, a lot of people against the Dark, but he trailed himself off saying they were too young to understand.
"Hurtful," Harry yelped at once.
Sirius gave him an even look, but finally that face was starting to wobble. It was clear he could have held it for hours yet if left to stew, but he'd never want Harry to really see him like this, so even if it didn't really work he tried to force something resembling his more normal self as he said, "well, hopefully I get over the delusion that you're fourteen. Obviously you're much older and I just need my eyes checked."
While it was clear he was going for a joke and apology all at the same time, Harry still grumbled mutinously for a bit, wondering if Sirius would reach the same conclusion in his own time.
Ron said in protest that's what his dad had told him, why wouldn't Sirius give them a try?
A grin flashed across Sirius' thin face.
"That's why you need to keep Ron around, it's good to know he can still get to me." Sirius sighed, losing the fight to keep himself tensed for a fight and instead slumping back in his seat, now just looking defeated. It was almost as bad as his anger, like he'd accepted this was his fate to come and he may as well enjoy himself in the meantime.
Everyone else refused to believe that, whatever self-punishment Sirius clearly still felt towards himself had not gone away no matter the farce he put up, but around a dry throat all James could do was what he'd always fall back on. Pick on his best friend. "Oh, now you agree with me, after the fact. Typical of you."
Sirius listlessly stuck his tongue out at him, the gesture more pouting than admitting a point like normal.
He agreed he'd give them a try, pacing back and forth a few more times before beginning.
Remus couldn't stop just the smallest of smiles gracing his features. James and Sirius were so alike sometimes, about things they didn't even realize. Only one instance being that they both tended to pace when they were upset or thinking hard, like the motion helped generate better ideas for them.
He began by recounting how it had felt to the rest of the world for Voldemort to be all powerful, no one to trust and no one to turn to. People did terrible things and no one could stop them.
"Don't have to think too hard to imagine that," Sirius muttered at Harry's side, going slightly cross eyed at himself saying this in past tense. It probably still felt like days ago to an after Azkaban Sirius, where time didn't mean much in that prison except endless torture.
You were scared for yourself, your family, everyone you cared about. Every time you turned around there was more news of death, disappearances, and even torture. The Ministry was not keeping a handle on anything, and Muggles were dying left and right.
There was nothing but panic in everyone.
"You do a lovely painting, I thought James was the artist," Remus quipped at Sirius loudly enough to be heard this time.
Sirius gave him a pleased enough smile, he'd heard that hint of longing in Remus' voice for this to be a past rather than present. James didn't find it nearly as funny, giving him a light swat on his next pass through, but at least he'd tucked his wand away.
Times like that brought out the best in some, and the worst in others.
"Clearly some people shouldn't be in this at all," Lily said flatly.
Crouch had been a rising star from the beginning, a voice for the Ministry that they weren't going to let this stand. He dealt out the harshest punishments on anyone slightly associated with Voldemort, granted powers to Aurors for people to be killed rather than captured. Sirius hadn't been the only one to get sent away without a trial.
Harry couldn't get that out without stuttering a bit, knowing it was foolish to fear for his life from them but it still wasn't passing easily through their ears without inciting more violent outbursts; made all the worse at the realization Sirius wasn't the only one treated like this. Yet more innocent people had likely died in this place because of Crouch!
Crouch fought violence with violence, and authorized the use of the Unforgivable Curses against suspects.
Lily blanched in horror. Talk of that was being passed along now, clearly it had gone through. She had been talking to her boys about this just last week, it was the root of all their snide comments about Crouch following whatever rules he saw fit.
Crouch became as ruthless as those he was fighting. Most seemed to agree with his methods and were begging him to take the top spot. When Voldemort vanished, it seemed obvious Crouch would get just that.
Remus opened his mouth to ask how on earth Sirius would know a thing like that, he'd been in prison by the time that came about, but not only did no one here know the answer, it would only be a sharp reminder in an already ugly room.
Then it all changed when Crouch's own son was brought in with a group of Death Eaters.
Harry got a zing tracing from the peak of his scar, marking all the way down to his toes. That was it, that was the bit of crucial information he was so sure he learned from Sirius. What on earth significant could that hold?
"Crouch has a son?" James asked in surprise, his steps finally faltering as his murderous thoughts were derailed and he was successfully pulled fully back into the story.
"I've never heard that," Lily said in shock. "I mean, sure I don't know the family members of everyone in my department, but I usually at least know who does and doesn't have kids. He's never mentioned it."
"Didn't you hear the rest of that?" Remus asked with disgust. "I can understand why if he's been hanging around Death Eaters, I wouldn't go parading that around in that sort of job."
Maybe before they'd have felt bad for Crouch, none of them could imagine what it would feel like for Harry to turn to Voldemort's side, but now that they knew what Crouch would indubitably do, all they felt was more hatred for the guy. He was clearly making examples out of others to show distance from his child, most likely why he'd never even mentioned him. That fallout had landed on Sirius for one.
Hermione was shocked to hear Crouch has a son?
Sirius agreed, while throwing himself back into the dirt. He tossed all his leftover bones to Buckbeak, while he continued saying it had come as a nasty shock for Crouch's own family to be pushed into the spotlight like that. It was probably his own fault, he should have gone home early for once and spent time with his own kid.
He then found the loaf of bread and began wolfing that down.
"I don't think I eat like Moony?" Sirius told Harry innocently, now receiving a slap from James as he passed him next. Sirius didn't regret it, as the lame joke finally ceased his best friend's incessant tread and he slammed back down on Harry's other side mutinously.
"Oh give that back," he grumbled, offering his hand out while Harry watched him uneasily. "I might need it to crack his head open next."
Harry gave it back, a little too willingly in Sirius' heads opinion, and James forced himself to continue reading. He still wasn't happy about it, but wearing out the carpet wasn't helping him, at least this way he could read past Sirius' insistent jokes rather than letting Harry laugh at them like he was prone to do.
Harry asked if his son really was a Death Eater?
For some reason Harry wanted to laugh at the question from himself, something in him clamoring to say that was obvious, of course he was, but the feeling subsided instantly and Harry was instead left listening to the blistering tones of James forcing himself to read about Crouch's personal life rather than him being burned alive.
Sirius said he had no clue if he'd really been, while stuffing himself with bread.
"You're going to make yourself sick," Lily couldn't help but scold maternally. "You've gone from hardly eating a thing to a lot of greasy and heavy foods. What good's that going to do you?"
"Yes mum," Sirius rolled his eyes at her, trying to hide his flashing smile.
He was in Azkaban when the guy was brought in,
James could not ever get that out without some interesting colorful tones threatening violence and death for that having to be a thing.
this was all stuff he'd found out after he'd escaped.
Remus still wanted to ask where that could have been from, even vaguely hoping it could have been from himself though unlikely as he didn't particularly keep up with politics, but then again Remus like to think he'd have at least kept an eye on Crouch; the man who did this to Sirius. Was that giving himself too much credit, since he clearly hadn't cared a lick for Sirius during this time? Great, now he was depressing himself as much as he was over Sirius.
The boy was certainly caught in the company Sirius would bet his life were Death Eaters, but it could have been wrong place, wrong time like the elf.
"Surprised you used a house-elf over yourself in that instance," Lily whispered softly.
Sirius watched her steadily for a moment, his expression hard to read as he told, "I got caught because I didn't run Lily, that's hardly wrong time and place."
His face spasmed, showing the deep regret and hate he had for himself, letting himself get caught, this stupid situation still falling on him though that rat had set everything in motion. He controlled himself quick enough, that cocky mask back in place as he added on to egg her on, "thought that would have given me some brownie points from you? I just compared myself to a lowly house-elf."
She shook her head fondly at him, she wasn't going to rise to Sirius' bait.
Hermione asked how hard Crouch had tried to get his son off?
Sirius let out a sharp bark of laughter.
"Always a warning of trouble," Remus muttered.
Sirius grinned and gave Harry a wink, he'd never thought to describe his type of laugh like that, but he loved Harry putting it like that for him.
Telling her he'd thought she realized better.
"I would have thought he'd think more of his child than his elf," Lily squeaked. She hadn't gained back any of her normal color tone, the fresh news of Sirius' incarceration still heavy on everyone, but still she somehow managed to look all the worse at this news.
"I'm not even going to pretend to be surprised," James muttered lowly, he now knew he'd never put anything past Crouch after what he'd just had further evidence of.
Crouch's fatherly affection stretched just far enough to give his son a trial,
"Oh well hallelujah he gives someone one!" Remus snapped instantly, his spine threatening to crack in half he jerked so hard at that statement.
and the whole show had been so everyone could see how much he hated the boy before he was given to the dementors.
Sirius read the shock on Harry's face and nodded along, not looking remotely amused as he told how they'd brought him right past his own bars.
James made a sound like a kicked puppy, the image swimming before his eyes of Sirius' wasted face having to look through bars and watch all of this, hearing the screams of this guy shouting all this. He shook himself so hard to shake that off he nearly tossed his glasses across the room and forced himself to keep going, anything to focus on rather than that.
He'd couldn't have been more than nineteen, screaming for his mother to help him, but he'd gone quiet by nightfall, most of them did. Except the ones who continued even in their sleep.
Sirius couldn't pretend anymore. He'd been trying to force this off since he'd found out what Crouch had done to him, but everything in him was crumbling at the dead way James was reading that. He started shaking so violently the couch trembled with him, his fingers digging into the cushion to anchor him to this life right here, and they'd have to wrench it away from his limp fingers before he wound up like that.
Harry didn't even think about it this time as he wormed up to Sirius, pulling him into a hug for protection, but words failed him. He still held a deep sense of regret whenever he thought too hard about comforting Sirius, something in Harry telling him his godfather was doomed which wasn't a pleasant thing at all to be considering in light of this.
Lily reacted much better, scrambling to her feet and perching on the arm of the sofa, running her nails gently through his hair and promising, "It's alright Padfoot, that's not happening."
The oddity of Lily calling him that managed to win out, his movements going from violent shaking, to jerking, and finally stilling. He remained hunched in on himself, hardly speaking loud enough, "I don't want to end up like that."
"You won't," Remus croaked, even that had been hard to force out past his tight chest, but it was worth it when Sirius glanced up at him. His dark gray eyes were at war, he wanted to believe him but the image had trapped him better than any Devil's Snare.
Remus sighed, he knew he would regret what he was fixing to do, but at this point he'd suffer for it just to take that look off of his friends face. He gave James a steady look as he sated, "I'm serious."
James reacted almost instantly, some things really never died as he remarked, "Nope, he is," giving Sirius a winning smile.
Sirius blinked spastically at the pair of them before tackling both of them with a hug, then laughing his arse of as he declared, "you haven't done that since first year!" It was mostly for show, but Sirius would rather pet a dragon than let his friends get away with doing this.
"That joke wore off after Christmas, you were the only one who wouldn't let it go after the fact," Remus reminded.
Still not completely able to hide swimming eyes, Sirius forced himself back to his seat and caught Lily before she could sneak away. "Thanks sis," without a hint of mocking.
She met his eyes steadily, while flicking his nose like scolding a dog and saying, "you're welcome love."
Sirius rubbed absently at his nose, but knew he'd take that over the wallop he knew she owed him.
James watched Sirius steadily for a few moments longer, but he considered it mission accomplished when his best friend turned back to him expectantly, waving his hand theatrically for James to continue. James knew a farce when he saw one, Sirius was still on the verge of a real panic attack again at his life heading towards that prison, but James would be remiss if he just sat here and let Sirius wallow in that instead of finding something else to do.
For a moment, the deadened look in Sirius' eyes became more pronounced than ever, as though shutters had closed behind them.
No one in here needed to picture that, they'd just gotten the live version, and hoped to never see it again. That fact that he was all alone in there, with no one to really turn that light back on, caused the room to feel as if it had been iced over already with a dementors presence.
Harry asked if he was still in Azkaban, and Sirius corrected he was dead. Died less than a year after he'd been brought in.
At their surprise, Sirius bitterly agreed most who went mad in there, stopped eating soon enough.
Sirius suddenly wasn't Sirius anymore, but instead had poofed into Padfoot for no clear reason other than to bark in Harry's ear, lunge across his lap and lick obstinately at James' ear, and then start running around the room, only pausing to occasionally bite at his tail. The others weren't sure whether to laugh or call for a Mediwizard, whether it would have worked or not, as they wondered if he'd really just snapped, but then he froze, fur bristling at James. James more than anyone was used to figuring out silent language, and the intent was clear, 'get on with it.'
He couldn't believe himself when he actually managed a weak chuckle, but he supposed the logic was sound. Sirius had survived that place as Padfoot for twelve years, he clearly felt he was only going to get through the rest of this mess in the same state.
Most lost the will to live, and you could always tell when a death was coming, it was when the dementors got the most excited.
Remus had never wished to be Moony in his life, but he suddenly envied Sirius. He still understood what they were saying, as he kept his tail high in the air and sniffed at Remus' boots most likely out of sheer something else to do with himself, but it was in a more simplistic nature filtered through those ears. He could still process everything being said and yet not have to face a reaction, something they all were wishing for by this time.
Crouch's boy had looked sick enough being brought in. His father's position being what it was, Crouch and his wife had been allowed a visit to the deathbed. That was the last time Crouch saw his son, half carrying his dead wife past Sirius' own cell.
If Harry hadn't been so distracted watching Padfoot suddenly leap onto his lap, which he was far too big for, Harry knew he would have considered much more carefully the significance of that.
James reached over absently and gave Sirius a mock pat on the head, a silent promise this was all almost over.
Mrs. Crouch had died not long after, grief most likely. Crouch had never come again for his son's body, and the dementors had buried it just outside the prison, Sirius had watched them do it.
James was entirely sure that was bile slicking over his tongue, his hand suddenly trembling in the fur. The distraction of the wet tongue lapping at his fingers, and then Sirius leaping cleanly over the table to start chasing his tail again the only thing that saved another vomiting session appearing. James was sorely tempted by this point to pass the book to Harry and join him as Prongs, on his life he'd never forced himself to read anything as painful as Sirius recounting his time in Azkaban.
Harry had no want to ask about Azkaban when it had been such a horrid topic for Sirius, but the question had lingered in the back of his mind so he figured he could ask now, which seemed fairer than later when he'd have to see Sirius' face again. "If only prisoners and Dementors are in Azkaban, how does that work? How do the prisoners get fed, and like go to the bathroom and stuff?"
"There's bathrooms in the cells, and the food's shipped in," Lily sighed heavily, building up a mental rant in her head she was going to save for Sirius' human ears about him tearing around her carpet with those huge feet that had unclipped claws on the end. If he tore stitches out of her rug, she was going to make him repair that without magic.
Harry did not press for more, knowing he'd pushed his luck for now when James kept going without waiting to see if Harry was done for once.
Sirius didn't bother finishing what was left of his bread, throwing that to Buckbeak as well as he went for the pumpkin juice and draining half of it in one long gulp.
Wiping the rest off his lips, he continued explaining that Crouch had lost all his popularity in that one move. Going from the hero, to the town gossip. People judged him for what had become of his son, thinking if he'd spent more time with him he wouldn't have turned out like that.
"I believe that," Remus said at once, he couldn't wrap his mind around Crouch caring about anything ever again. Not after all this.
So now Fudge had the job, and Crouch was shunted to another department.
Silence beat through the cave after all that. Harry felt he finally understood Crouch's overreaction to finding Winky under the Dark Mark.
"Makes a twisted amount of sense," Lily sighed in agreement.
He'd probably been having flashbacks to a time when his own son had been accused of the same Dark Arts.
Harry told Sirius about how Moody thought Crouch was obsessed with catching Dark wizards.
Sirius nodded along, saying that didn't surprise him. Sirius guessed Crouch was under the delusion if he caught just one more Death Eater, his name would be popular again.
"Let's hope it's a real one, and not just a name," James murmured to himself, keeping an eye on the dog that was finally pretending like he was going to settle, stretching out in front of the fire and closing his eyes, but keeping his ears perked and listening. The message was clear, he'd change back when the chapter was over, he wasn't risking anything else until otherwise.
Ron finished with triumph that was the reason he'd gone into Snape's office.
"Triumphantly?" Remus tore his own protective eyes away from Padfoot to look curiously at James and the book. "What did Ron just latch onto?"
"You're clearly not following along anymore," Lily snorted at him. "Ron's as convinced as we are Snape's a Death Eater, and I can't say I'll be displeased if Crouch does put him away for it," she finished nastily.
"I got that," he waved her off, "but was anyone disagreeing for him to be throwing that around?"
Lily shrugged without response for that.
Sirius shook his head and said that didn't make any sense.
"Apparently Sirius is," Harry noted, looking to his godfather in surprise, who was still pretending he was asleep, clearly not even up to defending himself and still content to let the book do it.
Ron tried to argue back, but Sirius waved him down, pointing out if Crouch wanted to spy on Snape he'd have the perfect opportunity by coming to all these Hogwarts events.
A sharp breath of air was released from the wet slit nostrils, if a dog could be quietly yet smugly triumphant Padfoot was doing it.
"Oh hush you," James sighed without looking up, "if you were thinking it, you should have said it."
Harry asked if Sirius thought Snape was up to anything?
Hermione pointed out Dumbledore clearly trusted Snape,
"And that means nothing to us," Lily said bitterly, her temper flaring at the mention of his name as well as Crouch's.
but Ron cut her off by saying as brilliant as Dumbledore was, it didn't mean a Dark wizard couldn't pull one over on him.
She shot back why had Snape saved Harry's life in first year then?
"Things change," James snapped sourly, "Voldemort hadn't been on the verge of a comeback then. Clearly his priorities went from hating me yet still heeding being a teacher, to appeasing Riddle."
One sharp bark of a laughter came from Padfoot, his tail wagging from side to side a bit at that.
"I remember agreeing to call him that," Remus smirked at James as well. "I'm glad you didn't let us forget."
Harry cut off their argument by asking Sirius' opinion, which shut the other two up.
Lily pressed her fingers to her lips to hide her smile, she wasn't going to let Sirius see how amusing she found it Sirius had managed to stop those kids picking at each other, when Sirius was the source of nearly every fight going on in here.
Sirius admitted they both had a good point. He'd been blasted to find out Snape was working at Hogwarts, he'd always been fascinated by the Dark Arts even as a slimy little kid.
"He just hit the tip of the iceberg," Remus shook his head fondly. "I've heard worse things from him on his good days about Snape." Clearly Sirius was still as lost in his own thoughts in that time to have used such mild insults.
Snape had known more curses coming into that school than some seventh years, and his gang of Slytherin friends had all turned into Death Eaters.
Lily bit at the inside of her cheek, pain welling up inside her chest as she fought to try and say otherwise. Even though she knew the truth, it still hurt that had ended up being so true.
He began ticking off those old names, Rosier and Wilkes who were killed by Aurors after Voldemort fell,
"Wicked," the three Order members suddenly perked up at that information, any failed Death Eaters was good news for them, especially in light of the fact they'd yet to come across a single member of their own group who'd survived past Voldemort's downfall as well.
the Lestranges who were a married couple in Azkaban,
Sirius made a 'humph' noise from his spot on the hearth, and Harry didn't need a translator to realize Sirius was adamantly saying they more than deserved it.
Avery, who'd talked himself out of a cell by saying he'd been under the Imperius curse.
"Something else that will be fixed," Lily's eyes flashed in outrage at hearing of this happening, again.
Yet Snape had never even been accused. This didn't mean much, plenty of them were never even suspected, and Snape was clever enough to keep himself out.
"That's got to be the nicest thing he's ever said about him," James shook his head in disgust.
"We never underestimated him," Remus reminded, "you were the one who near constantly reminded us to keep our checks up for him, he was the quickest to grow wise to when we were up to something. That falls under clever, to keep up with us."
"You boys fascinate me, with the amount of arrogance you hold. How the castle held your fat heads I'll never know," Lily pleasantly informed them while James smirked and Sirius' shoulders shook in silent laughter.
Ron pointed out how Snape and Karkaroff knew each other, but were trying to keep that quiet.
Harry told Sirius what he'd seen yesterday, about how they were upset about something on Karkaroff's arm.
Sirius seemed bewildered about the arm comment,
"Darn," James sighed, "Sirius has actually been a wealth of information so far," most of it something none of them would ever want to hear again, they all mentally agreed, "yet you couldn't answer that one."
It wasn't physically possible for a dog to actually 'stick' its tongue out at anyone, but the pink muscle lolling out of the side of his mouth was point enough.
but said that if Karkaroff was running to Snape for answers, that couldn't be good. He lapsed into a frustrated silence for a moment before continuing that if Dumbledore trusted Snape, than they had to trust Dumbledore for now. Sirius just couldn't see Dumbledore hiring anyone who once worked for Voldemort.
That spiked some different feelings in everyone. Remus threw Sirius a grateful look, unbelievably happy that at least someone other than him was at least still trying to hold out hope Dumbledore wasn't completely this thing putting them through hell.
James and Lily weren't entirely sure they agreed with that assessment, they were absolutely convinced Snape had been a Death Eater at some point, and for Dumbledore not to know was not possible. Yet the headmaster must have some profound reasoning then for keeping Snape an employee. What those reasons were though, they still weren't getting an answer.
Sirius shifted his weight around, his dark gray eyes reflecting back the firelight and causing some dancing shadows to pattern back on the walls in a rather eerie fashion. Harry's mind flashed back to when he'd feared this sight, and knew this would have at one point caused him heart failure to see the Grim so casually watching this room. Now Harry instead forced his mind to get away from that question he was sure he had an answer to, and instead wondered what it must feel like for a tongue to be scraping so harshly over canines and if that hurt while his large body panted next to the heat.
Ron insisted there must be a reason Crouch and Moody were going through Snape's office.
"Got to give him credit," James shook his head fondly, "I give anyone points who fights back with Sirius."
"You're giving yourself too much credit," Lily snipped back, "he's hardly the mastermind you seem to think."
Sirius made a yip noise of protest, but Lily just glared back at him. The message was clear, she wasn't taking it back unless he changed back.
He stood up, spun in a circle, and plopped back down with his back to them instead like a pouting child.
"I was actually speaking of you dear," James told his wife while watching Padfoot with worry growing eyes. They'd moved past the Azkaban talk, and James was really starting to want his best friend back. "I've never met anyone so willing to verbally spar with him."
"Flatterer," she scolded with a quirk of her lips.
Sirius agreed Moody wasn't something to underestimate, but he'd always been fair. Hauled in anyone he could get away with and tried not to resort to violence. Crouch though, that was a different story. If he wasn't ill, what was he playing at? What's he been doing rather than attending the schools event?
"He just managed to ask every question we have been this whole time," Remus rolled his eyes in exasperation.
They all stayed silent for a time after that, the only noise Buckbeak snooping around for any bones he'd missed.
Sirius was the first to break the silence, turning to Ron and asking about Percy, wondering if Ron could send a message to him asking about any news from Crouch?
"I'd think he's already been asked that a dozen times over," Lily scoffed. "If he's in charge of the department, he would have told someone by now if he'd actually seen his boss."
"Maybe he might mention something to Ron though," Remus shrugged in Sirius' defense.
Ron agreed he'd try.
Sirius also suggested dropping a question about Bertha, see if there was any more recent news on her.
Harry told about Bagman telling him more recently there wasn't.
Sirius said he wasn't going to take Bagman at word, he'd been quoted saying how bad he thought of Bertha's memory. Sirius though had known her differently, she'd been in school at the same time as him, and she'd had an excellent use of her memory by dishing out the school's gossip.
Harry remembered back to Bertha being mentioned in the same light in here, and Harry had a feeling it wasn't Sirius' memories or Bertha that was different. It was most likely in fact, something very important about her memories that got her into so much trouble...
He could easily picture her being a liability to the Ministry, which is why it may have taken them so long to go looking for her.
He cut himself off with a weary shake of his head, asking what time it was?
Hermione told it was half past three, and Sirius told them to get back to school. Then he gave Harry a particularly hard look,
Harry tried to look innocent of whatever he was sure Sirius was fixing to tell him, which wasn't fooling anyone, not even the canine who managed another huffing laugh with his back still turned to the lot of them.
as he told them not to come back out here unless Sirius said to. Just keep sending notes, he still wanted to hear if anything else odd was happening. They were not to go wandering around out here though, it would be too easy for them to be attacked.
"I love paranoid Sirius," Lily said sincerely, starting to feel some worry herself, she wasn't used to not hearing Sirius speak for so long. "He actually gives good advice."
Sirius gave her a happy little wag of his tail for that.
Harry shot back the only danger he'd been in this year was from a dragon and a grindylow.
Sirius scowled at Harry, telling him not to get lax. He wasn't going to be breathing easily until this was over in June. Then he added on not to go calling him by name in public, and instead they should use Snuffles.
Three collective snorts of laughter appeared for that, Sirius was even so distracted he rolled over to watch them laugh at this.
"I think I get it," Lily said with a small smile. "Sirius told Harry to call him that because he and Remus are the only ones who would understand who that's referring to."
Remus was frowning in consternation, thinking over in his head what all Sirius and Harry had and could be writing to each other over, and grudgingly saying, "yeah, I guess, and if he's thinking of hiding it from a certain someone," he got out through only slightly gritted teeth, "I guess it would make sense not to go with Padfoot."
James wasn't nearly as amused at the reminder for the secrecy, and in all honesty he was entirely certain that rat could pick up on Sirius' handwriting if anything so it still wasn't much use in hiding it from him if he was trying to intercept their letters, but he wasn't going to knock his best friend's paranoia either.
He gave Harry back his bag and said he'd walk with them back to Hogsmeade, try to find another newspaper.
He turned back into the black dog and led the way back down to the stile. He waited patiently as they each gave him a pat on the head, before he vanished back into the shadows.
Harry felt something very heavy sinking down into the pit of him. Somehow, he just knew the next time he saw his godfather wasn't going to be a good thing...
The others weren't feeling much better, each wanting to rub it in that they'd been right all along, Sirius coming back around had been more terrible than anything, though ironically the worst on the man himself.
Padfoot was stretching leisurely and getting back to his feet, shaking himself off as he watched James fingering the last page of this chapter.
The three of them headed back to Hogwarts, Ron asking if Percy knew all that stuff about Crouch?
"I really wouldn't think so," Lily frowned to herself, "I can't help thinking that isn't common knowledge. Crouch would want to keep that as hushed up as possible, and if he didn't talk about his family much before, I wouldn't think he would afterwards."
Then answering himself that he probably wouldn't care, he'd just admire Crouch more for it.
"That's disgusting," Remus yelped in shock. "Ron can't really mean that," his mind had instantly flashed back to the panicky older brother, sobbing and dragging his kid brother out of an icy lake after thinking something had happened to him.
"Yeah, I think Ron's exaggerating on this one," James agreed sadly. "Even Percy's not that bad."
Harry felt a bone deep shiver that he in no way wanted to pretend to process. Surely he was just getting a chill from sitting still so long...Percy would never turn his back on his family like that...
Hermione was shocked at him, telling him Percy would never hand over his family to dementors.
Ron shrugged her off, saying he just might if they stood in the way of his career.
"Oh please stop," Lily whispered as Padfoot froze in place. It was clear he'd been fixing to change back to a person, but at one last mention of those dementors, he released a high pitched keening noise and roughly shook his head as if to scare off a gnat.
They walked back to the smells of dinner starting, and Ron told Harry how much he should appreciate poor Snuffles, living off of rats just to be around.
"That's the least awful thing I've heard about myself recently," Sirius grumbled as he stumbled slightly on his two feet, before going over to James and taking the book away.
HPHPHPHP
I promise Padfoot popping up like that won't become a regular occurrence, no matter how much I loved writing like that, but I can't say he won't ever come back either...
*That whole conversation happened between me and nahte123456.

I've been working on my new wip a bit and wanted to post the unedited version to see if its worth committing to rn or if I should wait a bit
Huge trigger warning (They'll be all in the tags) but it's also missing a few parts so bare with me
Tonks looked down at the picture, the pale man had blood dripping from his nose, leaking from his mouth, eyes blood strained.
"Harry, it happened again" she shoved the file into his hands. He flipped through it, looking at the torched body, deep cuts ripped black robes, blood pooled underneath him, Harry was far too comfortable with the scene. Throwing the file onto the pile of similar murders he rubbed his head.
"Again?" Harry glanced at the pile, a high stack of grotesque pictures nearly toppling over, unsettling papers sticking out.
"Yah'' she sighed, this was the 16th poisoning ever since Voldemort's defeat. All people found the same way cases seemingly unrelated, it seems like his death brought the worst out in people. Attacks where becoming more frequent, suicide rates shot up and serial killers running lose. There wasn't enough people in the whole ministry to help build their world back together
"Got any leads on the stabbings" she picked up another file, thinner then the others but deaths just as violent.
"Yes actually!" Harry smiled "er well it's kind of a lead anyway but we discovered that it's not a spell that's doing the killing and whatever is being used is tainted with dark magic, like dark dark magic." He finished up, most dark objects were being confiscated but if they could trace the magic they could find the object and the owner!
"That's brilliant, keep it up and maybe we can put away one of these nut cases" Tonks said, relieved to finally have some good news. The war might've ended 6 months ago but it hadn't stopped the death eaters from fighting, people were still going missing, being kidnapped, killed. Last month they put away Fenrir for trafficking magical creatures, selling werewolves and seers to god knows who for god knows what. Harry picked up his file, tired eyes scanning the sheets looking for answers he gave a big yawn before turning to the next page
"You can go home you know" Tonks politely took the file from his hands, she occasionally caught Harry sleeping in her office and was getting concerned.
"No, there's too much work to be done" Harry picked up the previous file, turning the pages but not looking at the pictures.
"Hermione's not there, it gets kinda lonely you know? She's busy reading journals from last week's raid but lots of them are burnt up. She wants the piece together what she can, I mean she thinks it's some kind of dark magic they are talking about. Hey maybe it's the same magic that's in my victims!" Harry shot up, throwing the file back into Tonks desk and taking his,
"I'm going to go see her" he got up. "Coming with? It might say something about your victims too" Harry opened the door, waiting for Tonks to leave.
"Sure, whatever I can take" she looked at her watch "shit i'm going to be late! Sorry Harry but I'm going to have to take you up on that offer later, I have another meeting" she smiled rolling her eyes, being head of the Auras was hard on her but before Moody died he put in a request for her to be trained as his successor.
"Ill catch you later then!" Harry waved, running off, Tonks watched him disappear into the crowd. Harry had been a big help in putting away the death eaters, Hermione as well, but they were just children and would soon burn out. Tonks shook her head, a smile still on her face and both kids would do anything to help. Looking back at her watch she swore, swinging her office door shut and making way to her next meeting.
Rushing along the corridors she looked at the wanted pictures on the wall, most faces of death eaters others who used the war for exploitation. One face always stood out, the young rosy cheeks stood out against the hardened faces, the innocent life vivid in his eyes. She tried to keep Ron off the wanted wall for as long as she could, keeping him with the missing persons, alongside her friends and family but after a while and debate he was slapped into the wanted side, poster saying "traitor, found dead or alive."
"Oh excuse me! Uhhh- of- oh hi Tonks'' someone ran headfirst into Tonks, making them both fall.
"Hey Hermione'' Tonks picked the bushy haired girl off of her. Hermione scrambled, grabbing the fallen papers and tucking them back into her arms ``you know Harrys looking for you" she handed Hermione some papers, ink slightly smudged.
"Oh really? Good I need to talk to him, in some of the books I found the mentions of horcruxes and I think somebody was doing experiments with them, it kept mentioning the " devils fire" and " the others" I don't really know what it means but Harry has destroyed more then me so he's the experts." She said in one breath, eyes wide and full of curiosity. Her hair bounced down her back, papers slowly slipping out of her arms. "I'll catch you later okay?" She smiled, starting to walk off. "I gotta go talk with Harry" her voice waved as she noticed the picture of Ron. His disappearance hit her hard, she could barely go to the burrow neverminded talk the other Weasleys but she was slowly healing, she was even going over for dinner on Sunday. Remembering her previous task she ran off, being late for her meeting.
.
"Did you find my baby?" Miss Chang ran up to her, hope in her eyes. Tonks barely has walked into the door before the sad lady interrogates her.
"Miss if you'd sit down?" She gestured to the couch. She hated this part of her job but no one else was willing to do it.
"But did you find her?" She clung to Tonks robes as she guided her to her seat. "You found her right? My babys okay?" Tears welled in her eyes,
"We are following up on some leads today, I promise I'll let you know what happens okay?" Tonks tried to reassure the crying woman, she has had far too many "meetings' ' with grieving families and just once wanted to give somebody good news. Cho went missing in february, snatched away from her bed no one knew who took her or where she went but because they never found a body they are going off the motion that she's still alive, even if the chances are slim.
.
"Sorry I'm late" Tonks sat down at the head of the table, two auras where waiting for her full aura gear, ready to go out.
"Where are we heading off too?" He asked
"I got note of an abandoned death eater hideout, it was mostly used in the first war and was used for transporting hostages in the second. Cho was moved and I believe there might be evidence there, if not for her for somebody." Tonks said in a breath, anxious for her mission.
.
The door creaked open, noisily scratching against the concrete floor. It echoed throughout the room, a dim light lit up a cell, blood soaking the floor beside it. A table sat beside the cell, blood dripped off of it, an axe and blood soaked chains draped over each other
"Hey boys!" Tonks froze where she stood, the voice came from the cell, sounding familiar.
"Aura Tonks show yourself" she announced, standing up straighter. Hearing the rattling of chains she stepped forward, coming closer to the cell but keeping her distance. The man shook the door, proving it was locked and rested his hands on the bars, pale skin was covered in blood, it dripped off his long fingertips, falling into the huge pool underneath, dirt matted the parts of his arms that weren't covered in blood, building up under long fingernails. Tentatively making her way over she noticed the man moved, hearing the chains clanking around,
"Are you coming?" He mocked her, the chains moved again, clanking against one another. Angry she marched forward, and held tightly in her hand wanting to tell off this man for mocking her, but the sight she saw surprised her.
There he was, thick red hair, bright blue eyes, well over 6ft and silvery scars wrapping around his arm was Ron Weasley.
"Took you long enough" he spoke to the ceiling, he was lying on his back, legs raised up against the fall and arms folded under his head. Thick chains clasped around his wrist, connecting to the ground, he laid in a pool of blood, it coated the back of his head, drenching his dirty hair. He looked as if he hadn't taken a bath in weeks, hair covered in dirt making it black, his clothes hung from him, sticking to his body and smelling of sweat, his legs where exposed, all he had on was a pair of shorts, clearly the rest of the jean had been torn off, his bright freckles were invisible under the brown and red, large purple bruises covered his skin, cuts and scrapes alongside them.
He's been considered missing, no one really knows the true date he disappeared but he hadn't been seen since he left Harry and Hermione

The Fight
“There’s no way in hell, Potter.”
“Oh c’mon, I’m telling the truth,” Harry insisted, laughing as Draco glared at him under the dim lamps that lit up Hogsmead. They should probably be getting back, but Harry was having too much fun.
“You did not enter the Slytherin common room,” Draco insisted. “No, you cannot have. No Slytherin in their right mind would have let you in themselves.”
“You did,” Harry teased, enjoying the light blush that etched Draco’s cheeks as he did so and prompting him to pull his boyfriend in by the waist and place a lingering kiss on the cold surface of his cheek.
“I meant before,” the blond walking next to him grumbled.
“Well, you were the one who let me in before,” Harry informed him.
“I did not,” Draco glared. “See, now I know you’re lying because I’ve never let you in before and from this point onwards I’m never letting you in again for being a liar.”
Harry knew he was joking. Draco loved having him in his bed too much to give that up and, quite frankly, Harry loved being with Draco too much to give in without a fight.
Come to think of it, they spend all their time in the Slytherin common room and dorms, but Harry’s yet to insist that they stay at the Gryffindor tower instead. Then again, Draco’s never shown the inclination to see it. Not that Harry could blame him for his lack of enthusiasm, even though most everyone was quite alright with him already.
“You did, in second year,” Harry finally told him the story of how he and Ron broke in while Hermione stayed in the bathroom because of her little blunder and how Draco practically marched them in. By the end of it, Draco was left gaping before he shut his mouth with an audible clack.
Then, quite abruptly, he slapped Harry’s shoulder. “I cannot believe you never told me this. And to think, I’ve yet to visit your common room. I’m invading that soon, mark my words, Potter,” he hissed, but his eyes softened with worry when Harry began rubbing at the spot where Draco had heartlessly assaulted him.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t realize I hit you too hard,” Draco apologized immediately, placing his hand on the area Harry’s hand previously occupied and tried to sooth the non-existent pain. He pressed his face into Harry’s shoulder and nuzzled in, leaving Harry to be very endeared, but also very amused.
“You’re laughing,” Draco glared at him suspiciously once he felt Harry’s body shake as he tried to contain his laughter. “You were faking it!”
“C’mon love, just kiss me and it will be better,” Harry cooed, pouting a bit as he said so. Draco simply raised an eyebrow at him for a few seconds with a calculating look on his face before stepping forward.
Once their foreheads were pressed together, leaving them only about an inch apart. Once Harry’s eyes fluttered shut and he began leaning in, he nearly fell over when Draco stepped away.
“Ouch, blood fu-” he yelped when Draco gave his foot a hard stomp.
“Complete that sentence, Potter. I dare you,” Draco grumbled, but Harry could see the slight twitch of his lips that threatened to break into a full smile, and possibly a laugh, that instantly made the pain not so bad.
“Does this mean we’re even?” he asked.
Instead of answering him, however, Draco simply turned around and began making his way back to Hogwarts. “We should head back,” the blond’s voice sounded loudly through the near-empty roads despite his soft voice. “Don’t want to get in trouble with the Headmistress.”
“Hey!” Harry had to jog to catch up with Draco’s fast pace. “Stop being mad. Please?” He draped himself over his boyfriend’s back and wrapped his arms around him in a way he knew Draco loved but would never admit to doing so.
Harry’s come to realize that Draco just liked being close to him in general, even more so when Harry encompassed him securely.
Draco ignored him in favor of looking straight ahead, but Harry could see the corner of his lip twitching again. They were already so close to the entrance of the castle. Alright, so he wanted to play like that, Harry grinned.
“Hey,” this time it came out sounding much more gentle. He had stepped in front of Draco and cupped his face, leaving Draco with no other option than to look at him. “I’m sorry. I love you.”
Harry could practically see Draco melt, his emotions always visible to Harry through his eyes, and Harry was suddenly overcome with the strong desire to kiss him. So he did.
“Stop looking at me, Potter,” Draco mumbled, averting his eyes. “We’re fighting.”
“Is that what we’re doing?” Harry teased with a grin. Draco simply rolled his eyes and continued walking through the Entrance Hall except this time, he was holding Harry’s hand.
“Hey, Harry?” Draco mumbled before they had to split up. Harry had to go up the stairs while Draco could reach the dungeons from here. “I love you too.”
He said it so suddenly and left no room for Harry to reply as he immediately pressed him soft lips against Harry’s, all but stealing his breath for a few minutes before they pulled away.
“Goodnight, then.” Even through the dimness of the hall, Harry could still make out Draco’s flustered expression, accompanied by the blush that Harry has come to find so endearing on Draco.
“And where do you think you’re going?” Harry asked, grabbing Draco by the wrist and pulling him back gently into Harry’s chest.
“To... sleep?” Draco responded, looking confused as to why Harry was still keeping him there. “You’re welcome to join me if you don’t want to make the whole trip up.”
Harry seriously considered it, but he wanted to try something first.
“Well, you were the one pouting about never having been in the Gryffindor dorms,” Harry raised an eyebrow teasingly.
“Wh- I did not pout,” Draco sputtered indigently. “And who’s to say I want to make the whole trip up the stairs.”
“Sure, love,” Harry was still grinning so widely his cheeks began to hurt. “And I can carry you, if you like.”
“Absolutely not!” Draco looked mortified at the thought of them barging into the occupied common room in Harry’s arms. Well, at least Harry wasn’t exactly looking forward to carrying Draco up flights of stairs either.
“Alright, I’ll come as your willing hostage,” Draco sighed dramatically, like it was the most tedious task.
“My offer still stands.” It did not.
“No thank you,” Draco snorted, finally relenting and following him up the stairs hand-in-hand.
After a brief silence, Draco finally wondered aloud. “Does this count as our first fight?”
“Sure, if you want,” Harry snorted, although it was hardly a fight.
“Okay,” Draco nodded seriously, leaving Harry to watch him while feeling helplessly amused.
“I can’t believe you want to count that as a fight.” It was petty, but it was hardly a fight when they were both enjoying it. But then, Harry didn’t want to argue with Draco’s logic. It was one of the things he loved about him, after all.
“Okay. Just so it’s clear then,” Draco said after another moment of thought. “You started it.”
And with that, he practically bounced with every step they took, leaving Harry utterly confused but hopelessly in love with the strange creature that is Draco Malfoy.

I don't want Percy to be MC's friend. He's a complete jerk who only cares about himself more than his friends, parents and siblings but at least, he learned his mistake in the last Harry Potter movie. Watch the video called "The Entire Life of Percy Weasley (Harry Potter Explained)"
I can’t say that I agree, anon, though I can understand finding Percy obnoxious, especially in this game. His personality can definitely rub people the wrong way. However, having just watched the video, I have to say that I think it’s very one-sided. I’ll try and go through everything that it talks about - under the cut because I have no filter.
Fred and George
To say that he didn’t like his brothers Fred and George, and that he wanted to control them, isn’t really accurate and it doesn’t acknowledge that whenever Fred and George were mentioned in conjunction with Percy, they were usually bullying him. Vandalizing his Head Boy badge, even though he was proud of having gotten the position and it meant a lot to him. Or the time that they literally sent him dragon dung. Or the time that they tried to leave him for dead in a Pyramid tomb. And it was played for laughs. I’m not condemning Fred and George because they were the human embodiment of the chaos alignment, so it makes sense that they would butt heads with Percy. Brothers pick on each other, I know it happens. But it’s not fair to act like Percy feeling distant from his other siblings was his own fault. Fred and George were really popular with the Weasleys and other kids. Percy, by comparison, was just tolerated. Even though he was the model student and the one who followed rules, and the twins were constantly causing trouble. Why should Percy be ashamed of doing what he’s supposed to do? Why shouldn’t he want attention and validation from his family? Maybe the reason he talked constantly about his accomplishments was because he wanted to be appreciated.
The other Weasleys
Most of the moments where he doesn’t get along with his family in the early books are not moments that Percy himself initiates. It’s primarily Ron, Ginny, or the Twins picking on him. He didn’t even feel like he could tell his family he was dating someone because he guessed (correctly) that they would bully him for it. Speaking of that, Ginny promised she would keep Percy’s secret, and then turned around and told basically everyone.
Despite all this, Percy very clearly cared about his family, well before Deathly Hallows. Like the time he boasted about Ron helping to win the House Cup. The time he tried to comfort Ginny, believing she was upset about Ron. The time he scolded Ron over this and warned him to stop going near the site of the Basilisk attacks because of how it would look. Or the time he watched out for Harry because Mrs. Weasley asked him to, “like an extremely pompous guard dog” as the video says. (Like I said, very one-sided.) Or the time that he refused to let go of Ron after Ron was used as a hostage in the Second Task. The video also attributes the end of Percy’s relationship with Penelope to him working too much in GOF...but there’s literally nothing in the books that ever suggests that.
The Triwizard Tournament
Like Bill, Percy is show constantly shown to be a good leader. He was named Prefect and Head Boy and he utterly embraced the positions. But the video mostly focuses on how proud he was of having gotten these positions and now enough on how he got them...because he earned them. In the same breath as talking about how he would apparate in the house every morning just to prove he could the video also talks about how Crouch barely gave Percy the time of day. Couldn’t be bothered to remember his name and just gave him pointless tasks. Despite how excited Percy was and how eagerly he would talk about all this to the rest of his family, who found it boring and avoided the topic. Percy is all alone in GOF. Even more so than he has been before. It’s really no wonder that he poured himself into his work and looked to the Ministry for support and validation, because he wasn’t getting any at home. He was just being belittled and humiliated at every turn. Of course, once Crouch was imperius’d, Percy thought he was finally getting recognition, but he was just being used. He was being set up as the fall guy. Even the villains are indirectly dismissive of this character!
Because Crouch was out of commission, Percy was having to deal with all his work. So to say that he valued laws and rules over his own family is not only cruel, it’s completely wrong. Percy is resentful of them because to him, it feels like their actions are creating more stress for him at work and ruining that environment for him too. Ruining his dreams. The Ministry (and the video) blames Percy for not figuring out that something was off about Crouch, but it was still the same hand-writing, so why would Percy question it?
The Estrangement
His supposed reprieve came when Fudge hired him as a Personal Assistant. Percy was excited and came home, hoping his Dad would be proud of him. But like always, Percy was disappointed. Arthur was right in his suspicions about why Fudge hired Percy, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is that Percy heard “You aren’t good enough to have gotten this job.” He heard Arthur refuse to believe that he might have actually earned this. That he was succeeding. “No Percy, this job isn’t real. The one person who’s actually valued you in recent memory is just manipulating you and it’s totally our fault for siding with Dumbledore, but I won’t admit to that.” That’s how it felt. And yeah, it was one time too many. The Weasleys have never conveyed to Percy that they appreciate him or want him around, so why should he want to stick around? Why didn’t anyone step in sooner, or come to his defense when he was taking the fall for Crouch? Why is it only when their agenda is threatened that they say something? And Percy is the selfish one? Why should he believe Voldemort has returned? I agree that what he said to Arthur about Arthur’s reputation and their family was horrible...but I think Percy-Antis view this as totally without cause. And the cause is clear.
I take issue with how the video describes Percy slamming the door in Molly’s face “without even giving her a chance.” Because that scene was never depicted. We don’t know what happened or what was said. We don’t know how long the conversation may have lasted. But y’know, if I was Percy, I don’t think I’d even answer the door. He’s made his choice - cut ties with his family. To Molly’s credit, she was one of the only Weasleys who praised his accomplishments...but neither she nor Arthur ever did anything about the constant, constant bullying. That might be pretty hard to forgive, and Percy never receives any apology for it. He’s the only one who apologies in the end.
The letter that Percy sends Ron seems pretty terrible until you look at it from from the perspective that he’s genuinely trying to protect his little brother. Which he has always done in his own way. It’s an olive branch. Look, the word on the street is that Harry Potter is constantly lying and potentially dangerous. Percy might very well have made the judgment call that his family was blinded by their loyalty to him. It’s not like Percy and Harry were ever close. Think about it. After befriending Harry, Ron consistently got involved in dangerous adventures like confronting acromantulas, dementors, devil’s snare, the list goes on. It’s not unreasonable at all that Percy might want Harry to stay away from Ron. I’ll agree that giving Umbridge an endorsement is jaw-dropping...but we don’t see them interact. Umbridge might have put on a completely different face around Percy. Or he might have simply trusted Fudge and repeated his words. We just don’t know.
Fudge’s Departure
Dumbledore said that it’s harder to forgive someone for being right, then it is for being wrong. I’m not going to go off on a Dumbledore-bashing tirade right now, because that’s hardly the point - but while that is very wise advice in general...it completely misses the real point of why Percy left. It doesn’t matter if Dumbledore was right and Fudge was wrong. (Though Percy no doubt felt horrible and humiliated yet again when he realized that.) What matters is that Percy’s family pushed him away and made him feel so isolated that Fudge valuing him was the only good thing going on in his life. Percy leaving doesn’t make him an asshole. But it does say a lot, not about him, that he decided Fudge’s approval and his job at the Ministry were worth moving out and cutting off all contact with his family. Dumbledore's assessment of Percy’s feelings once again ignores any responsibility that his family has in why he left in the first place.I genuinely do love the Weasleys to no end (just look at my URL) but their relationship to Percy was toxic.
Scrimgeour, like Fudge, used Percy to get to the Weasleys, and forced him to pretend that he wanted to see them when he didn’t. Try to imagine being in that position, especially when Molly was the only one who even acted happy to see him. Fred, George and Ginny threw food at him. Literally why would Percy ever want to see them again if this was the welcome that he got? It was already painful for him and they did not make it any easier. Sure, I know that it was probably painful for them too, but they were once again not even considering Percy’s feelings, just their own.
The Battle of Hogwarts
I’ve already talked about how Percy apologies for everything, and the other Weasleys apologize for nothing. Not gonna lie, this is realistic to an uncomfortable level. Family members who have been mistreated wind up being the ones to apologize because they miss their family, even though they often aren’t completely to blame. But this is probably never going to be addressed because immediately after the reconciliation, Fred died. Just imagine how much undeserved guilt Percy felt about that. And then look to the epilogue where there’s one final humorous moment about Harry seeing Percy at King’s Cross and making a mental note to avoid him. Literally nothing has changed. Percy is still the joke of the family. He’s just accepted it because without them, he’s alone. He’s learned to see himself as the problem, and not them.
...I am such a nerd. But I hope you can see where I’m coming from as well. Again, I love The Weasleys. I adore Fred and George. But Percy is not, and was never a bad guy. In some ways, he’s my favorite Weasley. I do love his character arc. But...I just...I wish there had been some apology from the twins as well.

◈◈◈
The cold February air burns the back of your throat and lungs as you sprint towards the lake. You can’t believe that you’re late– late to your own Triwizard Task. If only you hadn’t insisted on staying up waiting for Draco. Why hadn’t he shown?
You were still so mad about that, you let your anger spur you on as you pounded down the path. As you drew nearer, you could hear the voices of the crowd. The stands that had been used in the first task against the dragons were now arranged neatly on the shore of the Black Lake, and a platform over the edge of the water had the judge’s table and the other two Champions standing on it. You burst through the final tree line and out onto the rocky shore, not slowing even slightly as you skid across the pebbles. The Gryffindor section of Hogwarts students roars their approval at your dramatic entrance when you finally come to a stop, hands on your knees and panting, beside Krum and Fleur.
“Nice of you to finally arrive, Miss L/N,” Percy Weasley says icily. Ludo Bagman just laughs and gives him a reprimanding shoulder pat, but Karkoff and Madam Maxime look equally disgruntled. Dumbledore looks as placid as ever, but you think he might be slightly amused.
Finally having caught your breath, you look to the stands while Bagman spaces you, Fleur, and Krum evenly across the platform. You catch Harry and Ron standing with Neville, who all give you encouraging looks. Hermione isn’t with them, though, which is odd. You eyes drift next to the Slytherins, all sitting together near the top. The anger flairs in your chest again when you spot Pansy and Crabbe and Goyle, but no Draco in sight. Doesn’t show up the night before your task, causes you to oversleep, and then also doesn’t show up? You’re going to be having a word with your boyfriend later.
Neville’s frantic waving pulls your eyes back down to your friends. He’s mouthing “You still got it?”
You dig your hand into your robe pocket and produce the Gillyweed he’d given you the night before. It’s grossly warm from being in your pocket all night and has some lint on it, but otherwise it looks just the same as it had yesterday. With a jolt you realize what your lateness has also cost you: proper dress.
Fleur and Krum are both in bathing suits, wands at the ready. You sigh, shove the warm Gillyweed into your mouth and force it down your dry throat, and pull off your robe. You hastily toss your shoes and socks to the side as well, and then look down at your wool skirt and the rest of your school uniform. You steel yourself for a moment, and then strip off your shirt and tie, trying to ignore the increasing wolf whistles behind you as you slip out of your skirt. Merlin, this stuff is hard to chew.
“... the second task, which will start on my whistle. They have precisely an hour to recover what has been taken from them.” Bagman said, his voice magnified by his wand at his throat. “On the count of three, then. One… Two… Three!”
You’re certainly glad that Bagman wasn’t messing around, because you hadn’t expected the Gillyweed to take effect so fast. While Krum and Fleur dive into the lake beside you, you trip over the edge in your haste to get in. As soon as you’re submerged in the icy water, the lightheaded feeling that had started to come over you quickly goes away. You examine your hands– they’ve become webbed, and as you tread water you can feel your feet have also changed. You smile. Thank Merlin for Neville.
Krum and Fleur had disappeared in the time it took you to get your bearings. You grip your wand in a webbed hand, and do the first thing that comes to mind. Accio treasure, you think. When nothing happens for a moment, you realize that was a pretty pointless idea. You use your new heightened swimming abilities to head deeper into the lake.
Even being fast, there was no way you could cover the entire lake in an hour. What even was your treasure? You still had on your family ring, and beyond that your wand one was one of the most important things you owned. What else could possibly be missing? If only you’d had time to check your room before the task, maybe you would have a better idea. You silently curse your idiot boyfriend for the third time that morning.
You swim through the dark water for who knows how long, totally at a loss for what to do next. But then… you thought you heard something. You stop swimming, and through the watery sounds of the lake you hear it more clearly– Mermaid song. The egg clue finally comes together in your brain, and you set off in what you hoped was the direction of the singing.
You knew you were close when you saw the first merperson. They were scarier than you’d imagined them, with grey skin and yellow eyes and sharp teeth that made you not want to think about their diet. As you swam on, you started to see their little houses, built out of rocks that were green with algae. Merpeople were everywhere now, even coming out of their houses as they watched you swim past. Some carried spears, but none made a move to attack.
At the center of the mervillage was a large statue, carved from an enormous rock still settled into the lake bed. Even though you had gills to breathe underwater with, you choked a little when water entered your mouth from your involuntary gasp.
Tied to the statue’s tail were three people, a tiny girl of no more than eight with streaming locks of silver hair, your friend Hermione, and Draco.
The treasures. You’d never even considered that a person might’ve been the treasure, and now Draco’s disappearances over the past six hours made sense. You swam forward and floated in front of Draco, resting a hand on his pale cheek. He felt cold and looked green in the water of the lake, but the slow yet steady stream of bubbles coming from his mouth told you he was just under some sort of sleeping spell.
You push up with your hands to move down in the water, examining the rope tying Draco to the statue. You point your wand at the rope and think, Diffindo. Even though your wand movement is slow underwater, the spell works and the rope magically severs. You grab Draco’s arm to keep him from floating away, and turn to look at Hermione before you go, her long hair rippling gently in the water. You cast one glance around for the other Champions. Surely the hour is almost up? Then again, this is also your chance to come in first, and make up for your abysmal performance with your dragon. You securely wrap your arms around Draco, and start to swim towards the surface. The effects of your Gillyweed are wearing off, and you fight the last few meters to the surface.
As soon as your heads break the water, Draco’s sleep spell lifts. You both take a minute to cough up water and he grins at you, his wet hair plastered stupidly flat on his head. In the distance, you hear the crowd on the bank roar as you’re finally spotted.
“Well? How’d we do?” Draco asks.
“First!” You can’t help but forget the reprimand you had planned, you’re too excited.
“Really?” Draco gasps. He takes your face in his hands and gives you a wet, cold kiss. “I’m so proud of you!”
“Thanks babe. C’mon, let’s go.”
You swim back to shore together, where Madam Pomfrey is waiting with large blankets for the both of you. You’re thankful, because not only are you freezing in the February chill, but you’re painfully aware that undergarments look much different wet than dry.
“Goodness, child, couldn’t you have had the sense to keep at least some of your clothes on?” Madam Pomfrey chides as she enconces you in one of the blankets. Your response of “I wanted to be faster” dies in your throat as she shoves a spoonful of Pepperup potion into your mouth. She hands the other blanket to Draco, and hurries off to get more. The crowd has started up again, and you think you see Krum and Hermione surface in the distance.
“So now I know why you didn’t show up last night.” You poke Draco with a blanketed finger.
“I’m so sorry about that,” Draco apologizes sincerely. “I wanted to get a message to you but Snape told me I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone, and sent me back to my room. I’ll make it up to you, I promise.”

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Chapter 31: The Third Task
Harry tells Ron and Hermione everything he heard and saw at Dumbledore’s office, and Ron wonders if Fudge might be right about suspecting Madame Maxime, whereas Hermione immediately defends her, claiming she would have lied about her heritage as well, knowing about the prejudice Madame Maxime had to face. It once again shows that Ron is much more willing to believe certain prejudices and stereotypes, because there must be some truth to it, if everyone says so, whereas Hermione questions everything. And it is not just because Hermione is more rational, logical thinking and suspicious. But because she, unlike Ron, had to face prejudice because of her heritage. People tell her how incredible talented she is, but usually add that she is despite being Muggleborn. Hermione’s perfectionism, her deep fear of failure, is based on the fact that she has to work extra hard to prove her value, to prove that she belongs in the Wizarding World, despite her being Muggleborn and a girl.
“Lying in the darkness, Harry felt a rush of anger and hate towards the people who had tortured Mr and Mrs Longbottom … he remembered the jeers of the crowd as Crouch’s son and his companions had been dragged from the court by the Dementors … he understood how they had felt … then he remembered the milk-white face of the screaming boy, and realised with a jolt that he had died a year later … It was Voldemort, Harry thought, staring up at the canopy of his bed in the darkness, it all came back to Voldemort … he was the one who had torn these families apart, who had ruined all these lives …” – But that’s too easy, isn’t it? To blame a single person for all those terrible things. Because even someone as Voldemort needs followers, needs an army, needs people who fight for him and in his name. You can’t fight a war without followers after all. And the Death Eaters weren’t simply soldiers following orders. They were or still are devoted to Voldemort and his ideals. Voldemort’s radical ideas only worked because pureblood already fanatics existed – he just took things to a next level. And nobody forced them to do this. Some might have joined him out of fear or to protect their families, but many did because they agreed with his ideas about the purity of blood, because they did enjoy to torture and kill people. And that is an aspect that I like about the Fantastic Beasts-movies and the exploration of Grindelwald: that Voldemort isn’t a singular event. And if it wasn’t for him some other Dark Wizard would have taken his place. Terror-regimes don’t stand and fall with one person. And we see this in book 7, because otherwise Voldemort didn’t have to take over the entire government.
I wonder if they even asked the Dursleys to come see Harry at the Third Task or if they straight out just wrote to the Weasleys instead. Anyway, I always loved that scene, of Harry thinking he has no family, nobody that would care about him, and then the Weasleys showing up.
“‘Hmm,’ said Mrs Weasley, pursing her lips. She had always refrained from criticising the Dursleys in front of Harry, but her eyes flashed every time they were mentioned.” – Can you imagine how hard that must be though? But that is something I really like about Molly Weasley – she knows that they are still Harry’s family, that despite everything they demand some very basic respect and that it would be rude to talk bad about them. It somehow reminds me that when couples get divorced, and one starts to talk badly about the other in front of their child. Which is simply something you shouldn’t do, because despite whatever happened in the marriage, kids still look up to their parents, and sometimes people are shitty spouses but still good parents. (And I’m obviously not talking here about abusive and violent spouses/parents, they can rot in hell)
“‘Your father and I had been for a night-time stroll,’ she said. ‘He got caught by Apollyon Pringle – he was the caretaker in those days – your father’s still got the marks.’” – Casual reminder that obviously beating was an accepted punishment at Hogwarts not that long ago. According to the interwebs Molly attended Hogwarts in the 60s. I couldn’t find an exact date when Dumbledore became headmaster, so it is possible that this form of punishment stopped once he took over.
Mrs. Weasley tells Amos Diggory off for coming after Harry, claiming he should know that Rita Skeeter is always out to cause trouble, and that he should be aware that she is not always (or never) writing the truth. And yet, she still believed what Rita wrote about Hermione, and it is not until Harry tells her that none of it is true that she acts normal to her again. I wonder why that is? There is no implication that Mrs. Weasley had any kind of reservations towards Hermione before, which might explain why she was willing to believe those rumours about her. Maybe it is simply because she is overly protective when it comes to Harry.
Oh Harry, do you really think Dumbledore would have allowed an actual Dementor in the maze? Of course it is only a Boggart.
Harry hears Fleur screaming and his very first instinct is to help her, before he remembers that it is not his job.
Krum attacks Cedric, with an Unforgiveable Curse nonetheless, and yet none of them suspects that something might be wrong with Krum, that somebody might have forced him to do it. They both got to know him, and yet they assume that Krum is rather a Dark Wizard himself than a victim of one.
So much about book 4 and the Triwizard Tournament is what it means to be a hero. And mostly it comes down to being selfless. Harry didn’t enter the Tournament, he has no intention of winning it, he just wants to survive the whole thing. He doesn’t see the others as rivals but rather as people who have to face the same burden as he does, despite them being older and more competent wizards and participating voluntarily in the Tournament. And because of that Harry acts selfless. He tells Cedric about the dragons, because he wants to give him an even chance. He wants to rescue all the hostages in the Second Task, because their survival is more important than winning. He helps Cedric twice in the Maze, he wanted to help Fleur as well. He offers Cedric the cup. And he is the one suggesting they both should win. And all those selfless acts cost him so much. And in the end, in book 7, he has to do the ultimate sacrifice: to give his life. And that is what makes him a hero: his ability to love, to think about others before thinking about himself, to care about them in the most fundamental way.
As it turns out the Triwizard Cup is a portkey. Earlier we learned that they only work at a specific time, so how could this particular portkey work? There was no way of knowing at what time Harry would reach the cup after all.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire Review
I FINALLY FINISHED THIS BOOK !!
That sounds like I didn’t like it, which is completely false!! I just have been reading this book for a while because i read like 200 pgs and then put it down bc school and such and only now picked it back up. Plus it really is a long ass book. I was rereading my other harry potter reviews, and they are kinda all over the place and I don’t really worry about spoilers and all that, so I am going to just continue on with that messy style for the rest of the series lmao
Thoughts I Had While Reading
It sucks to be Harry Potter like 100% of the time
Ron was a huge ass dick in this book and he never apologizes to either Harry or Hermione and i am DISSATISFIED
Hagrid is my #1 Fav always
my #2 fav is Viktor Krum I love that kid so much and his love for Hermione is beautiful and pure
Harry Potter is such an irrational dick to Cedric just because of Cho lmao i was getting SO FUCKING MAD AT HIM
but also harry is such a cutie trying to free all the hostages during the second task
I forreal ugly cried 1) when Mrs. Weasley showed up as Harry’s family before the third task 2) when all the ghosts came out of voldemort’s wand and Cedric asked harry to bring his body back to his fam and when his own parents came out aaaahhhhhh 3) CRIED THE MOST WHEN AFTER EVERYTHING HAPPENED MRS. WEASLEY HELD HARRY AND HE SAID IT WAS THE FIRST TIME HE COULD REMEMBER BEING HELD LIKE A MOTHER HOLDS HER CHILD
rip sweet cedric diggory he deserved so much better and I kinda think about how if only harry had been a dick and grabbed the trophy at the end for himself !!!!! but of course he isn’t a dick and he didn’t know !!!!!! ugh
Review 4/5 Stars
I really really enjoyed this book, I loved all the new characters and the triwizard tournament and then the end, as usual with these books, was WILD. All the pieces came together and there were lots of character moments and shocks, etc. I just think the book was a little long, and at the end two villains had to have these super lengthy monologues to explain the whole book and its events, but other than that this book was such a gamechanger for the series. Prisoner of Azkaban is still my fav though

Fan Theories (Part 1)
One of the most well-known but least accurate fan theories about Harry Potter is that of the Golden Trio (Harry, Ron, and Hermione) and why they each belong in Gryffindor. As a reminder in case anyone has forgotten, the theory is that though each of the three characters represents a different house, they are all in Gryffindor because they chose to be. Hermione is the intelligent Ravenclaw, Ron is the loyal Hufflepuff, and Harry is the determined Slytherin, and they all ended up in Gryffindor together because that is where they wanted the Sorting Hat to put them.
There are two things wrong with this theory. Firstly, this theory gives an inaccurate portrayal of the characters’--particularly Harry’s and Ron’s--traits, and secondly, despite what many Potter fans believe of the books, you cannot expect the Sorting Hat to put you in a certain house just because it’s where you want to go.
Let’s talk about the inaccurate portrayal of the trio’s character traits first.
First off, there is almost nothing about Harry that would suggest that he belongs in Slytherin. He is not cunning or manipulative, may be good at being a leader but doesn’t actually like it, and really, he is not very ambitious. He is determined, yes, but only in those situations that involve potential harm to others, such as when he thought that Voldemort had captured Sirius in book 5 and wouldn’t let anything get in the way of rescuing him. He is not at all competitive, being far more concerned for his friends’ safety than for winning, and this fact is perfectly demonstrated during the Second Task in book 4. Harry is the first to reach the hostages in the lake, making it almost certain that he will be the first to return and win the most points from the judges, but rather than follow the path that will bring him glory and give him the upper hand in the rest of the tournament, he chooses to ensure the safety of Hermione, Cho, and Gabrielle, a little girl he does not even know.
Harry is about the most Gryffindor-y character out of everyone in the entire series. He loves going on adventures and solving mysteries, he is very reliant on his reflexes and impulses and often acts without thinking, and at times, he can be a bit reckless because of it. It is in his nature to always do the right and noble thing, and like the stereotypical Gryffindor, he loves and is very prone to, as Ron says, “playing the hero.” However, unlike the stereotypical Gryffindor, he doesn’t play the hero in order to gain fame, glory, and popularity--he plays the hero in order to help people.
That is why, if Harry was not in Gryffindor, he would be a Hufflepuff. He is loyal to all people--all CREATURES, really, as this includes House Elves, Goblins, Hippogriffs, etc.--and only defies them if they threaten those loyalties, as seen with Draco, Lucius, Voldemort, etc. When threatened, he responds not offensively but defensively, protecting the ones he loves and ensuring their safety before going for the fight. He puts others before himself (sacrificing himself to Voldemort in book 7), he is very forgiving and doesn’t hold grudges (saving Malfoy from the Fiendfyre in book 7 despite everything that he had done), and he believes that everyone deserves a second chance (stopping Lupin and Sirius from killing Wormtail in book 3).
Ron is supposed to be the representative of Hufflepuff, but given the evidence above, Harry belongs in this house far more than he does. Ron does do the right thing--in most instances--but never goes to the extremes that Harry does. He loves his friends and is very loyal to them, but he is not loyal in that sense that Hufflepuffs are. Ron’s loyalty aligns more with Slytherin house; he is very loyal to his friends and family (Harry, Hermione, and the rest of the Weasleys), but when it comes to the rest of the magical world, he is fairly indifferent. It is true that he was made a prefect, but he doesn’t have the sense of responsibility or duty that the position requires (often slacking off just because he feels like it). He is very competitive and wants to stand out and be the best (as we see when he looks in the Mirror of Erised in book 1), he has a prominent jealousy streak (when he stops speaking to Harry after he is chosen to be a Triwizard Champion in book 4), and though he may not come up with it initially, he is very open to the idea of manipulating others in order to get what he wants (his excitement at Harry’s plan to trick Griphook and cheat him out of the Sword of Gryffindor in book 7).
Ron lacks almost every Hufflepuff trait, and the few reasons why people think he should belong to that house are actually reasons why he would make a good Slytherin. However, Slytherin and Gryffindor are very similar in their thoughts and actions, and Ron’s extroverted tendencies in pretty much everything he does make him lean more toward the latter than the former. So basically, if he wasn’t in Gryffindor, he would be in Slytherin.
Now, Hermione is a different story altogether. This theory states that Hermione is a Ravenclaw, and though I agree, I think so in a different way. Ravenclaw house is probably the most diverse out of the four, encompassing people from her to Luna Lovegood, who couldn’t be more different. Like a typical Ravenclaw, Hermione values intelligence, is competitive and looks down on cheating, has an immense thirst for knowledge, and can be quite the know-it-all, but many of these traits can be seen in the other three houses as well. Hufflepuff house values fair play, so they would also look down on cheating, Slytherins are very competitive and ambitious, and intelligent people can appear in any house, really.
Because of the extensive descriptions of Hermione as a character, both within and between the lines of the books, I think that she is more of a Slytherin-style Ravenclaw. Hermione is very hardworking like a Hufflepuff and wants to be the noble leader like a Gryffindor, but her closed minded-ness, sense of perfection, extremely competitive nature, and jealous tendencies suggest more of a Slytherin personality. Hermione’s closed mind makes her very self-centered, especially as we see with her self-established group, the Society for the Promotion of Elfish Welfare. It’s great that she wants to do the right thing and give House Elves equal rights within the Wizarding World, but she doesn’t stop to think about what the elves actually WANT. She thinks she knows what is best for them even though they have actively disagreed with her, and she goes so far as to trick them in order to get them to do what she wants them to do (when she leaves out the rubbish-covered hats in the Gryffindor Common Room in book 5). The right thing is what HERMIONE deems as the right thing, nothing more and nothing less.
The fact that she loves knowledge and learning more than anything else makes Ravenclaw Hermione’s dominant house, but Slytherin is a close second. Other than her bravery and stubbornness, Hermione really doesn’t have many Gryffindor traits.
The second reason why this theory doesn’t really make sense is that Hogwarts students cannot just choose their own houses based on where they want to be. I understand why people would think that they can, for after all, Dumbledore DOES say in book 2 that Harry is in Gryffindor because he told the Sorting Hat that he wanted to be. However, if we look more closely at what he says, we will see a different meaning:
“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities.”
The Sorting Hat saw in Harry many Slytherin qualities (because he was a Horcrux), but it put him in Gryffindor because it also saw the desire to take actions and make choices that align with Gryffindor. He can talk to snakes and has the ability to order them to attack people, but he doesn’t because he would never want to harm anyone. He has the potential to be a great and powerful leader, but he avoids that because he doesn’t want to control others nor does he like the attention. Harry has so many opportunities to be selfish but he never takes them, choosing to go his own way rather than to just do what is easy.
“Choice” is the key word here. Someone may be very smart, but because they CHOOSE to value hard work and responsibility over intelligence, they would be sorted into Hufflepuff over Ravenclaw. Everyone has a bit of every Hogwarts House inside them, but what they deem as important and what they would do, say, in the face of a crisis, is a lot more telling than simply their abilities. People’s values often tend to coincide with their abilities and so are thus sorted into the houses that they desire to be in, but it is because of the values, and not the abilities, that they are there. So, to an extent, a student can choose his or her own house, but not in the way that they would think, and certainly NOT in the way that this theory proposes.

Hello Mah, forgive me for coming to ask for another prompt, I should control myself more, but I was reading ''Fate'' when I came across with this part ''Harry will have a full plate with these two someday.''
And I thought that if you haven't written that, make Harry complain to James and Sirius or Lily, idk, over the Easter break, about how Hermione and Ron are fighting, and maybe, just if you want, there is no Voldemort? Just to see the Golden Trio even more as teenagers, as they should be. But if you want to put Voldemort to give that dramatic touch of yours, it's okay too, you decide :)
and if you don't want to write that, that's fine too <3
Hiiiiii, Sweet! <3 please send all the asks you want!
I loved this prompt so much that I couldn’t help myself. So please enjoy this family moment between Harry, his parents and Sirius as they discuss Ron and Hermione’s possible relationship, during the Easter Break of Harry’s Fourth Year (for curiosity, in this universe, Ron and Hermione begin dating the start of their Fifth Year - and one day I’ll finish a WIP about Hinny’s relationship in the same universe)
Oh, and I know you asked for the Golden Trio being teenagers, but, really, here the parents are the teenagers:
Harry looks at the letter Errol just dropped with a heavy sigh that’s muffled by the sound of the owl hitting the glass of the window instead of flying away.
‘Rest before you go back’, Harry says, picking up the owl carefully (Errol blinks in thanks) and taking it downstairs to the tree next to the window of the kitchen that stands as their owlery. His parents are there, with Sirius, finishing their breakfast.
‘Morning’, Harry says distractedly, helping to place Errol in a branch of the tree, next to a sleepy Hedwig.
‘Come take your breakfast, Harry’, his mother tells him. Harry sits, yawning.
‘What’s with the grumpy face?’, Sirius asks, watching him.
‘I woke up early. Hermione sent me a letter - and when I was almost sleeping again, Errol came with another’.
‘Ron and Hermione are already writing?’, James asks, sounding amused. ‘You have been apart for only one day, you know that, right?’
Lily giggles. ‘Look who's talking. When was the last time you spent a day without seeing Sirius?’
‘Hey!’, James complains, while Harry laughs too. ‘If I don’t see him, how will I know he’s been feeding himself?’
‘Maybe trust he is a functional thirty-five-year-old guy?’
‘Hey, I am right here’, Sirius remembers.
‘Yeah, and you are eating breakfast in our place, which just proves my point’, James notes, smirking. He turns to Harry. ‘What’s so important they had to write to you on the first day of the holidays?’
‘Privacy, James?’, Lily says, amused. ‘Or you used to share the contents of your Marauder letters with your parents?’
‘I hope not’, Sirius intervenes. ‘He used to talk a lot about you in those letters - I am not sure Monty and Mia would have enjoyed reading so much about your very nice pair of -’
‘Hey, hey!’, Harry interrupts, raising his hands. ‘Kid alert here!’
‘Very nice pair of eyes, Harry’, Sirius says calmly. ‘Why did you think I would say?’
‘Oh, shut it’, Harry rolls his eyes, ignoring the redness around his neck. ‘And if you want to know, it’s no big deal, they don’t stop talking about it anyway. It’s about Viktor Bloody Krum’.
‘Harry -’
‘Sorry, Mom’, Harry adds hurriedly. ‘It’s just I don’t wanna ever hear about him again, really’.
‘What happened to all that admiration?’, James asks, surprised. ‘I thought you were cheering more for him than for the Hogwarts Champion’.
‘That was because…’, Harry’s voice drifts off, embarrassed. He doesn’t really want to talk about why Cedric Diggory annoys him lately. ‘Well, I don’t have any problem with Krum, but don’t say his name out loud near Ron and Hermione unless you want to hear them bickering’.
‘Oh, they are still in that phase?’, asks Lily, a grin playing on her lips that Harry doesn’t understand.
‘They always bicker, it’s just… I don’t get it, I thought Ron would actually be glad Hermione is friends with Krum, but all he does is complain’.
‘They are friends? Krum and Hermione’, his father asks, raising his eyebrows. Harry supposes that’s really an unlikely pair.
‘Well, friends, I don’t know - wait, I didn’t tell you? Hermione went with Krum to the Yule Ball’.
James and Sirius make a chorus of ‘ohhhh’, raising their eyebrows at the same time, and pull their chairs so they get closer to Harry.
‘You didn’t tell us!’, his father complains.
‘I didn’t think it was important’.
‘You really need to sort out your priorities, Harry’, Sirius says, somber. ‘That’s big news’.
‘Hermione and Krum?’, Harry asks doubtfully, then he grins. ‘Oh, wait until you hear everything then’.
And he tells them how Ron got upset with Hermione’s choice of date, accusing her of fraternizing with the enemy.
‘Wow’.
‘Nice phrasing’, Sirius agrees.
‘I should have used it when I found you snogging Anthony Travers’.
‘He was hot’.
‘He was a Slytherin!’
Lily rolls her eyes. ‘Grow up’, she mumbles, but they don’t seem to hear.
‘And at the end of the Yule Ball’, Harry adds, expecting for their reactions, ‘she told Ron that next time there was a ball, he should ask her before someone else does, and not as a last resort!’.
Sirius and James don’t disappoint him. ‘OOOOOOH’.
‘One point to Hermione!’
‘She definitely hit a nerve there’.
‘And then what happened?’, Sirius asks curiously. ‘The next day? What did they do?’
Harry shrugs. ‘Nothing, actually, they just pretended nothing happened’.
‘I will need to talk to Ron’, James says gravely; he looks at Lily. ‘If you told me something like that, I would be asking you out the very next minute’.
She gives him a loopsided grin that Harry is sure she learned with his father. ‘As if you would ever not ask me for any ball first’.
James grins, raising to kneel in front of her. ‘My dearest Lily, would you give me the pleasure of your company for all balls for the rest of your life?’
‘Oh, get a room you two’, Sirius says, rolling his eyes. ‘I am waiting to hear the rest of the story. Come on, Harry’.
But Harry is looking wistfully at his parents. ‘It must be so nice to ask someone out when you know she is going to accept it’.
James laughs. ‘Well, now it seems easy, but when I asked your mom, trust me, I was nothing but a nerve-wracking mess’.
‘He fainted’, Lily agrees, looking fondly at her husband.
‘It was not a faint! I just closed my eyes for a while -’
‘Harry’, Sirius interrupts out loud. ‘So if everything was ok, why are you receiving letters now?’
‘Oh’, Harry grins. ‘It’s because of the Second Task. The champions had to rescue the things they would miss the most - and for Krum, that was Hermione’.
‘That is so -’
‘Unexpected?’, Lily suggests. ‘Unbelievable exaggerated for someone you just went to a ball together?’
‘Romantic’, Sirius finishes, frowning at her. ‘What did James see in you, Evans?’
‘Potter’, she notes, smirking. ‘And from what you said, he was very fond of my pair of… eyes’.
‘Oh, stop you two’, James says, waving his hand as if they are two misbehaved kids. He glances at Harry. ‘I take Ron didn’t like it very much’.
‘No, he hated it. I mean, he was very worried with Hermione while she was underwater, though I told him Dumbledore wouldn’t really anything happen with any of the hostages… and then when she was safe, he got angry with her!’
‘Of course he did’, James agrees, eyes sparkling with laugh. Harry doesn’t see much humour in this story.
‘Well, now they keep arguing about Krum, about house-elves, about whoever Ron is talking to, about everything, and I am in the middle of it. Letters and all now’.
James exchanges a look with Lily. ‘We were never like that’.
‘No, we went from arguing to bantering and then snogging’.
‘It wasn’t arguing, I was just an arse and you didn’t take it quietly’, James says unabashed. ‘But I meant we never took pleasure in arguing just for the sake of it’.
‘I wish you had’, Sirius notes. ‘At least then I could shut you up with a spell’.
‘We were not that bad’, James says fairly. Sirius gives one of his barking laughs.
‘You two keep looking at each other when you thought the other wasn’t looking, both convinced the other didn’t like you back, while you both sighed all over the place, finding some stupid excuses to be near each other - I mean, come on, how many meetings could you have in our final year?’
‘I was Head Boy!’, James remembers.
‘See? The worst excuse ever to get near a girl’.
Harry blinks. ‘What are you talking about?’
‘Your parents’, Sirius says joyfully. ‘And comparing them with Ron and Hermione’.
‘What they have to do in common?’
‘Oh, Harry’, Sirius looks at him almost pityingly. ‘You see, when a boy likes a girl - or another boy, or when a girl likes a boy or a girl -’
‘You are just complicating everything, Padfoot’, Lily tells him brightly. ‘What he means is that there is something going on between Ron and Hermione’.
‘Yeah’, Harry agrees, his brows furrowed. ‘They are fighting’.
The other three laugh. Harry crosses his arms, annoyed.
‘But why are they fighting, Harry?’, his mother asks gently.
‘Because they are two stubborn people?’
‘But why now, why about Krum?’ When Harry shrugs, without answering, Lily shakes her head. ‘Oh, dear, you are as oblivious as your father’.
‘Hey!’
Lily places a soft kiss on James’ face before turning to Harry.
‘Ron is jealous of Hermione’, she explains patiently. ‘And Hermione wished Ron had asked her to the ball before. You see now?’
‘So Ron and Hermione… will become Ron and Hermione?’
‘I don’t know that’, Lily says. ‘Not every crush turns into something’.
‘Ours did’, James whispers, smugly.
‘And not every school romance lasts after school either’.
‘Seventeen years together’, James sings. Lily throws him a fond look.
‘And counting’, she agrees, offering her hand for him to take it.
Sirius rolls his eyes.
‘You see what I had to endure with these two? That will be you with Ron and Hermione’.
‘They like each other?’, Harry repeats, thinking, but now that they’ve said it, he supposes he couldn’t really be surprised.
All that bickering had to mean something - and beyond that, they were always close, always gravitating around each other. He supposes he should be glad they would move on that bickering phase, but if they did...
‘But - what if they get together? I will be a third wheel! Worse, what if they get together and then split up? We won’t be friends -’
‘You are overworrying, son’, James assures him. ‘You won’t stop being their friends no matter what happens’.
‘Yeah’, Lily mumbles. ‘Look at Sirius’.
‘What about me?’
‘James dating me and marrying me didn’t affect the relationship between Prongs and Padfoot’, she notes, ignoring Sirius’ wink at her. ‘So you will be fine with them’.
Sirius nods gravely. ‘There is only one rule you need to follow when your best friends are dating, Harry. Remember that and your life will be easier’.
‘What is that?’
Sirius grins. ‘Always knock on their doors before you enter any room they are in or else you will see them in positions you didn’t even know it was possible’.
‘Sirius!’

Padfoot Returns
One of the best things about the aftermath of the second task was that everybody was very keen to hear details of what had happened down in the lake, which meant that Ron was getting to share Harry's limelight for once. Harry noticed that Ron's version of events changed subtly with every retelling. At first, he gave what seemed to be the truth; it tallied with Hermione's story, anyway - Dumbledore had put all the hostages into a bewitched sleep in Professor McGonagall's office, first assuring them that they would be quite safe, and would awake when they were back above the water. One week later, however, Ron was telling a thrilling tale of kidnap in which he struggled single-handedly against fifty heavily armed merpeople who had to beat him into submission before tying him up. "But I had my wand hidden up my sleeve," he assured Padma Patil, who seemed to be a lot keener on Ron now that he was getting so much attention and was making a point of talking to him every time they passed in the corridors. "I could've taken those mer-idiots any time I wanted." "What were you going to do, snore at them?" said Hermione waspishly. People had been teasing her so much about being the thing that Viktor Krum would most miss that she was in a rather tetchy mood. Ron's ears went red, and thereafter, he reverted to the bewitched sleep version of events. As they entered March the weather became drier, but cruel winds skinned their hands and faces every time they went out onto the grounds. There were delays in the post because the owls kept being blown off course. The brown owl that Harry had sent to Sirius with the dates of the Hogsmeade weekend turned up at breakfast on Friday morning with half its feathers sticking up the wrong way; Harry had no sooner torn off Sirius's reply than it took flight, clearly afraid it was going to be sent outside again. Sirius's letter was almost as short as the previous one. Be at stile at end of road out of Hogsmeade (past Dervish and Banges) at two o'clock on Saturday afternoon. Bring as much food as you can. "He hasn't come back to Hogsmeade?" said Ron incredulously. "It looks like it, doesn't it?" said Hermione. "I can't believe him," said Harry tensely, "if he's caught..." "Made it so far, though, hasn't he?" said Ron. "And it's not like the place is swarming with dementors anymore." Harry folded up the letter, thinking. If he was honest with himself, he really wanted to see Sirius again. He therefore approached the final lesson of the afternoon - double Potions - feeling considerably more cheerful than he usually did when descending the steps to the dungeons. Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle were standing in a huddle outside the classroom door with Pansy Parkinson's gang of Slytherin girls. All of them were looking at something Harry couldn't see and sniggering heartily. Pansys pug-like face peered excitedly around Goyle's broad back as Harry, Ron, and Hermione approached. "There they are, there they are!" she giggled, and the knot of Slytherins broke apart. Harry saw that Pansy had a magazine in her hands - Witch Weekly. The moving picture on the front showed a curly-haired witch who was smiling toothily and pointing at a large sponge cake with her wand. "You might find something to interest you in there, Granger!" Pansy said loudly, and she threw the magazine at Hermione, who caught it, looking startled. At that moment, the dungeon door opened, and Snape beckoned them all inside. Hermione, Harry, and Ron headed for a table at the back of the dungeon as usual. Once Snape had turned his back on them to write up the ingredients of todays potion on the blackboard, Hermione hastily rifled through the magazine under the desk. At last, in the center pages, Hermione found what they were looking for. Harry and Ron leaned in closer. A color photograph of Harry headed a short piece entitled: Harry Potter's Secret Heartache A boy like no other, perhaps - yet a boy suffering all the usual pangs of adolescence, writes Rita Skeeter. Deprived of love since the tragic demise of his parents, fourteen-year-old Harry Potter thought he had found solace in his steady girlfriend at Hogwarts, Muggle-born Hermione Granger. Little did he know that he would shortly be suffering yet another emotional blow in a life already littered with personal loss. Miss Granger, a plain but ambitious girl, seems to have a taste for famous wizards that Harry alone cannot satisfy. Since the arrival at Hogwarts of Viktor Krum, Bulgarian Seeker and hero of the last World Quidditch Cup, Miss Granger has been toying with both boys' affections. Krum, who is openly smitten with the devious Miss Granger, has already invited her to visit him in Bulgaria over the summer holidays, and insists that he has "never felt this way about any other girl." However, it might not be Miss Granger's doubtful natural charms that have captured these unfortunate boys' interest. "She's really ugly," says Pansy Parkinson, a pretty and vivacious fourth-year student, "but she'd be well up to making a Love Potion, she's quite brainy. I think that's how she's doing it." Love Potions are, of course, banned at Hogwarts, and no doubt Albus Dumbledore will want to investigate these claims. In the meantime, Harry Potters well-wishers must hope that, next time, he bestows his heart on a worthier candidate. "I told you!" Ron hissed at Hermione as she stared down at the article. "I told you not to annoy Rita Skeeter! She's made you out to be some sort of- of scarlet woman!" Hermione stopped looking astonished and snorted with laughter. "Scarlet woman?" she repeated, shaking with suppressed giggles as she looked around at Ron. "It's what my mum calls them," Ron muttered, his ears going red. "If that's the best Rita can do, she's losing her touch," said Hermione, still giggling, as she threw Witch Weekly onto the empty chair beside her. "What a pile of old rubbish." She looked over at the Slytherins, who were all watching her and Harry closely across the room to see if they had been upset by the article. Hermione gave them a sarcastic smile and a wave, and she, Harry, and Ron started unpacking the ingredients they would need for their Wit-Sharpening Potion. "There's something funny, though," said Hermione ten minutes later, holding her pestle suspended over a bowl of scarab beetles. "How could Rita Skeeter have known...?" "Known what?" said Ron quickly. "You haven't been mixing up Love Potions, have you?" "Don't be stupid," Hermione snapped, starting to pound up her beetles again. "No, it's just...how did she know Viktor asked me to visit him over the summer?" Hermione blushed scarlet as she said this and determinedly avoided Ron's eyes. "What?" said Ron, dropping his pestle with a loud clunk. "He asked me right after he'd pulled me out of the lake." Hermione muttered. "After he'd got rid of his shark's head. Madam Pomfrey gave us both blankets and then he sort of pulled me away from the judges so they wouldn't hear, and he said, if I wasn't doing anything over the summer, would I like to -" "And what did you say?" said Ron, who had picked up his pestle and was grinding it on the desk, a good six inches from his bowl, because he was looking at Hermione. "And he did say he'd never felt the same way about anyone else," Hermione went on, going so red now that Harry could almost feel the heat coming from her, "but how could Rita Skeeter have heard him? She wasn't there...or was she? Maybe she has got an Invisibility Cloak; maybe she sneaked onto the grounds to watch the second task...." "And what did you say?" Ron repeated, pounding his pestle down so hard that it dented the desk. "Well, I was too busy seeing whether you and Harry were okay to -" "Fascinating though your social life undoubtedly is. Miss Granger," said an icy voice right behind them, and all three of them jumped, "I must ask you not to discuss it in my class. Ten points from Gryffindor." Snape had glided over to their desk while they were talking. The whole class was now looking around at them; Malfoy took the opportunity to flash POTTER STINKS across the dungeon at Harry. "Ah...reading magazines under the table as well?" Snape added, snatching up the copy of Witch Weekly. "A further ten points from Gryffindor...oh but of course..." Snape's black eyes glittered as they fell on Rita Skeeter's article. "Potter has to keep up with his press cuttings...." The dungeon rang with the Slytherins' laughter, and an unpleasant smile curled Snape's thin mouth. To Harry's fury, he began to read the article aloud. "'Harry Potter's Secret Heartache...dear, dear. Potter, what's ailing you now? 'A boy like no other, perhaps...'" Harry could feel his face burning. Snape was pausing at the end of every sentence to allow the Slytherins a hearty laugh. The article sounded ten times worse when read by Snape. Even Hermione was blushing scarlet now. "'...Harry Potter's well-wishers must hope that, next time, he bestows his heart upon a worthier candidate.' How very touching," sneered Snape, rolling up the magazine to continued gales of laughter from the Slytherins. "Well, I think I had better separate the three of you, so you can keep your minds on your potions rather than on your tangled love lives. Weasley, you stay here. Miss Granger, over there, beside Miss Parkinson. Potter - that table in front of my desk. Move. Now." Furious, Harry threw his ingredients and his bag into his cauldron and dragged it up to the front of the dungeon to the empty table. Snape followed, sat down at his desk and watched Harry unload his cauldron. Determined not to look at Snape, Harry resumed the mashing of his scarab beetles, imagining each one to have Snape's face. "All this press attention seems to have inflated your already over-large head. Potter," said Snape quietly, once the rest of the class had settled down again. Harry didn't answer. He knew Snape was trying to provoke him; he had done this before. No doubt he was hoping for an excuse to take a round fifty points from Gryffindor before the end of the class. "You might be laboring under the delusion that the entire wizarding world is impressed with you," Snape went on, so quietly that no one else could hear him (Harry continued to pound his scarab beetles, even though he had already reduced them to a very fine powder), "but I don't care how many times your picture appears in the papers. To me. Potter, you are nothing but a nasty little boy who considers rules to be beneath him." Harry tipped the powdered beetles into his cauldron and started cutting up his ginger roots. His hands were shaking slightly out of anger, but he kept his eyes down, as though he couldn't hear what Snape was saying to him. "So I give you fair warning, Potter," Snape continued in a sorter and more dangerous voice, "pint-sized celebrity or not - if I catch you breaking into my office one more time -" "I haven't been anywhere near your office!" said Harry angrily, forgetting his feigned deafness. "Don't lie to me," Snape hissed, his fathomless black eyes boring into Harry's. "Boomslang skin. Gillyweed. Both come from my private stores, and I know who stole them." Harry stared back at Snape, determined not to blink or to look guilty. In truth, he hadn't stolen either of these things from Snape. Hermione had taken the boomslang skin back in their second year - they had needed it for the Polyjuice Potion - and while Snape had suspected Harry at the time, he had never been able to prove it. Dobby, of course, had stolen the gillyweed. "I don't know what you're talking about," Harry lied coldly. "You were out of bed on the night my office was broken into!" Snape hissed. "I know it. Potter! Now, Mad-Eye Moody might have joined your fan club, but I will not tolerate your behavior! One more nighttime stroll into my office, Potter, and you will pay!" "Right," said Harry coolly, turning back to his ginger roots. "I'll bear that in mind if I ever get the urge to go in there." Snape's eyes flashed. He plunged a hand into the inside of his black robes. For one wild moment. Harry thought Snape was about to pull out his wand and curse him - then he saw that Snape had drawn out a small crystal bottle of a completely clear potion. Harry stared at it. "Do you know what this is. Potter?" Snape said, his eyes glittering dangerously again. "No," said Harry, with complete honesty this time. "It is Veritaserum - a Truth Potion so powerful that three drops would have you spilling your innermost secrets for this entire class to hear," said Snape viciously. "Now, the use of this potion is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. But unless you watch your step, you might just find that my hand slips" - he shook the crystal bottle slightly - "right over your evening pumpkin juice. And then. Potter...then we'll find out whether you've been in my office or not." Harry said nothing. He turned back to his ginger roots once more, picked up his knife, and started slicing them again. He didn't like the sound of that Truth Potion at all, nor would he put it past Snape to slip him some. He repressed a shudder at the thought of what might come spilling out of his mouth if Snape did it...quite apart from landing a whole lot of people in trouble - Hermione and Dobby for a start - there were all the other things he was concealing...like the fact that he was in contact with Sirius...and - his insides squirmed at the thought - how he felt about Cho....He tipped his ginger roots into the cauldron too, and wondered whether he ought to take a leaf out of Moody's book and start drinking only from a private hip flask. There was a knock on the dungeon door. "Enter," said Snape in his usual voice. The class looked around as the door opened. Professor Karkaroff came in. Everyone watched him as he walked up toward Snape's desk. He was twisting his finger around his goatee and looking agitated. "We need to talk," said Karkaroff abruptly when he had reached Snape. He seemed so determined that nobody should hear what he was saying that he was barely opening his lips; it was as though he were a rather poor ventriloquist. Harry kept his eyes on his ginger roots, listening hard. "I'll talk to you after my lesson, Karkaroff," Snape muttered, but Karkaroff interrupted him. "I want to talk now, while you can't slip off, Severus. You've been avoiding me." "After the lesson," Snape snapped. Under the pretext of holding up a measuring cup to see if he'd poured out enough armadillo bile, Harry sneaked a sidelong glance at the pair of them. Karkaroff looked extremely worried, and Snape looked angry. Karkaroff hovered behind Snape's desk for the rest of the double period. He seemed intent on preventing Snape from slipping away at the end of class. Keen to hear what Karkaroff wanted to say, Harry deliberately knocked over his bottle of armadillo bile with two minutes to go to the bell, which gave him an excuse to duck down behind his cauldron and mop up while the rest of the class moved noisily toward the door. "What's so urgent?" he heard Snape hiss at Karkaroff. "This," said Karkaroff, and Harry, peering around the edge of his cauldron, saw Karkaroff pull up the left-hand sleeve of his robe and show Snape something on his inner forearm. "Well?" said Karkaroff, still making every effort not to move his lips. "Do you see? It's never been this clear, never since -" "Put it away!" snarled Snape, his black eyes sweeping the classroom. "But you must have noticed -" Karkaroff began in an agitated voice. "We can talk later, Karkaroff!" spat Snape. "Potter! What are you doing?" "Clearing up my armadillo bile, Professor," said Harry innocently, straightening up and showing Snape the sodden rag he was holding. Karkaroff turned on his heel and strode out of the dungeon. He looked both worried and angry. Not wanting to remain alone with an exceptionally angry Snape, Harry threw his books and ingredients back into his bag and left at top speed to tell Ron and Hermione what he had just witnessed. They left the castle at noon the next day to find a weak silver sun shining down upon the grounds. The weather was milder than it had been all year, and by the time they arrived in Hogsmeade, all three of them had taken off their cloaks and thrown them over their shoulders. The food Sirius had told them to bring was in Harry's bag; they had sneaked a dozen chicken legs, a loaf of bread, and a flask of pumpkin juice from the lunch table. They went into Gladrags Wizardwear to buy a present for Dobby, where they had fun selecting the most lurid socks they could find, including a pair patterned with flashing gold and silver stars, and another that screamed loudly when they became too smelly. Then, at half past one, they made their way up the High Street, past Dervish and Banges, and out toward the edge of the village. Harry had never been in this direction before. The winding lane was leading them out into the wild countryside around Hogsmeade. The cottages were fewer here, and their gardens larger; they were walking toward the foot of the mountain in whose shadow Hogsmeade lay. Then they turned a corner and saw a stile at the end of the lane. Waiting for them, its front paws on the topmost bar, was a very large, shaggy black dog, which was carrying some newspapers in its mouth and looking very familiar.... "Hello, Sirius," said Harry when they had reached him. The black dog sniffed Harry's bag eagerly, wagged its tail once, then turned and began to trot away from them across the scrubby patch of ground that rose to meet the rocky foot of the mountain. Harry, Ron, and Hermione climbed over the stile and followed. Sirius led them to the very foot of the mountain, where the ground was covered with boulders and rocks. It was easy for him, with his four paws, but Harry, Ron, and Hermione were soon out of breath. They followed Sirius higher, up onto the mountain itself. For nearly half an hour they climbed a steep, winding, and stony path, following Sirius's wagging tail, sweating in the sun, the shoulder straps of Harry's bag cutting into his shoulders. Then, at last, Sirius slipped out of sight, and when they reached the place where he had vanished, they saw a narrow fissure in the rock. They squeezed into it and found themselves in a cool, dimly lit cave. Tethered at the end of it, one end of his rope around a large rock, was Buckbeak the hippogriff. Half gray horse, half giant eagle, Buckbeak's fierce orange eye flashed at the sight of them. All three of them bowed low to him, and after regarding them imperiously for a moment, Buckbeak bent his scaly front knees and allowed Hermione to rush forward and stroke his feathery neck. Harry, however, was looking at the black dog, which had just turned into his godfather. Sirius was wearing ragged gray robes; the same ones he had been wearing when he had left Azkaban. His black hair was longer than it had been when he had appeared in the fire, and it was untidy and matted once more. He looked very thin. "Chicken!" he said hoarsely after removing the old Daily Prophets from his mouth and throwing them down onto the cave floor. Harry pulled open his bag and handed over the bundle of chicken legs and bread. "Thanks," said Sirius, opening it, grabbing a drumstick, sitting down on the cave floor, and tearing off a large chunk with his teeth. "I've been living off rats mostly. Can't steal too much food from Hogsmeade; I'd draw attention to myself." He grinned up at Harry, but Harry returned the grin only reluctantly. "What're you doing here, Sirius?" he said. "Fulfilling my duty as godfather," said Sirius, gnawing on the chicken bone in a very doglike way. "Don't worry about it, I'm pretending to be a lovable stray." He was still grinning, but seeing the anxiety in Harry's face, said more seriously, "I want to be on the spot. Your last letter...well, let's just say things are getting fishier. I've been stealing the paper every time someone throws one out, and by the looks of things, I'm not the only one who's getting worried." He nodded at the yellowing Daily Prophets on the cave floor, and Ron picked them up and unfolded them. Harry, however, continued to stare at Sirius. "What if they catch you? What if you're seen?" "You three and Dumbledore are the only ones around here who know I'm an Animagus," said Sirius, shrugging, and continuing to devour the chicken leg. Ron nudged Harry and passed him the Daily Prophets. There were two: The first bore the headline Mystery Illness of Bartemius Crouch, the second, Ministry Witch Still Missing - Minister of Magic Now Personally Involved. Harry scanned the story about Crouch. Phrases jumped out at him: hasn't been seen in public since November...house appears deserted...St. Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries decline comment...Ministry refuses to confirm rumors of critical illness.... "They're making it sound like he's dying," said Harry slowly. "But he can't be that ill if he managed to get up here...." "My brothers Crouch's personal assistant," Ron informed Sirius. "He says Crouch is suffering from overwork." "Mind you, he did look ill, last time I saw him up close," said Harry slowly, still reading the story. "The night my name came out of the goblet...." "Getting his comeuppance for sacking Winky, isn't he?" said Hermione, an edge to her voice. She was stroking Buckbeak, who was crunching up Sirius's chicken bones. "I bet he wishes he hadn't done it now - bet he feels the difference now she's not there to look after him." "Hermione's obsessed with house-elfs," Ron muttered to Sirius, casting Hermione a dark look. Sirius, however, looked interested. "Crouch sacked his house-elf?" "Yeah, at the Quidditch World Cup," said Harry, and he launched into the story of the Dark Mark's appearance, and Winky being found with Harry's wand clutched in her hand, and Mr. Crouch's fury. When Harry had finished, Sirius was on his feet again and had started pacing up and down the cave. "Let me get this straight," he said after a while, brandishing a fresh chicken leg. "You first saw the elfin the Top Box. She was saving Crouch a seat, right?" "Right," said Harry, Ron, and Hermione together. "But Crouch didn't turn up for the match?" "No," said Harry. "I think he said he'd been too busy." Sirius paced all around the cave in silence. Then he said, "Harry, did you check your pockets for your wand after you'd left the Top Box?" "Erm..." Harry thought hard. "No," he said finally. "I didn't need to use it before we got in the forest. And then I put my hand in my pocket, and all that was in there were my Omnioculars." He stared at Sirius. "Are you saying whoever conjured the Mark stole my wand in the Top Box?" "It's possible," said Sirius. "Winky didn't steal that wand!" Hermione insisted. "The elf wasn't the only one in that box," said Sirius, his brow furrowed as he continued to pace. "Who else was sitting behind you?" "Loads of people," said Harry. "Some Bulgarian ministers...Cornelius Fudge...the Malfoys..." "The Malfoys!" said Ron suddenly, so loudly that his voice echoed all around the cave, and Buckbeak tossed his head nervously. "I bet it was Lucius Malfoy!" "Anyone else?" said Sirius. "No one," said Harry. "Yes, there was, there was Ludo Bagman," Hermione reminded him. "Oh yeah..." "I don't know anything about Bagman except that he used to be Beater for the Wimbourne Wasps," said Sirius, still pacing. "What's he like?" "He's okay," said Harry. "He keeps offering to help me with the Triwizard Tournament." "Does he, now?" said Sirius, frowning more deeply. "I wonder why he'd do that?" "Says he's taken a liking to me," said Harry. "Hmm," said Sirius, looking thoughtful. "We saw him in the forest just before the Dark Mark appeared," Hermione told Sirius. "Remember?" she said to Harry and Ron. "Yeah, but he didn't stay in the forest, did he?" said Ron. "The moment we told him about the riot, he went off to the campsite." "How d'you know?" Hermione shot back. "How d'you know where he Disapparated to?" "Come off it," said Ron incredulously. "Are you saying you reckon Ludo Bagman conjured the Dark Mark?" "It's more likely he did it than Winky," said Hermione stubbornly. "Told you," said Ron, looking meaningfully at Sirius, "told you she's obsessed with house -" But Sirius held up a hand to silence Ron. "When the Dark Mark had been conjured, and the elf had been discovered holding Harry's wand, what did Crouch do?" "Went to look in the bushes," said Harry, "but there wasn't anyone else there." "Of course," Sirius muttered, pacing up and down, "of course, he'd want to pin it on anyone but his own elf...and then he sacked her?" "Yes," said Hermione in a heated voice, "he sacked her, just because she hadn't stayed in her tent and let herself get trampled -" "Hermione, will you give it a rest with the elf!" said Ron. Sirius shook his head and said, "She's got the measure of Crouch better than you have, Ron. If you want to know what a mans like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals." He ran a hand over his unshaven face, evidently thinking hard. "All these absences of Barty Crouch's...he goes to the trouble of making sure his house-elf saves him a seat at the Quidditch World Cup, but doesn't bother to turn up and watch. He works very hard to reinstate the Triwizard Tournament, and then stops coming to that too....It's not like Crouch. If he's ever taken a day off work because of illness before this, I'll eat Buckbeak." "D'you know Crouch, then?" said Harry. Sirius's face darkened. He suddenly looked as menacing as he had the night when Harry first met him, the night when Harry still believed Sirius to be a murderer. "Oh I know Crouch all right," he said quietly. "He was the one who gave the order for me to be sent to Azkaban - without a trial." "What?" said Ron and Hermione together. "You're kidding!" said Harry. "No, I'm not," said Sirius, taking another great bite of chicken. "Crouch used to be Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, didn't you know?" Harry, Ron, and Hermione shook their heads. "He was tipped for the next Minister of Magic," said Sirius. "He's a great wizard, Barty Crouch, powerfully magical - and power-hungry. Oh never a Voldemort supporter," he said, reading the look on Harry's face. "No, Barty Crouch was always very outspoken against the Dark Side. But then a lot of people who were against the Dark Side...well, you wouldn't understand...you're too young...." "That's what my dad said at the World Cup," said Ron, with a trace of irritation in his voice. "Try us, why don't you?" A grin flashed across Sirius's thin face. "All right, I'll try you...." He walked once up the cave, back again, and then said, "Imagine that Voldemort's powerful now. You don't know who his supporters are, you don't know who's working for him and who isn't; you know he can control people so that they do terrible things without being able to stop themselves. You're scared for yourself, and your family, and your friends. Every week, news comes of more deaths, more disappearances, more torturing...the Ministry of Magic's in disarray, they don't know what to do, they're trying to keep everything hidden from the Muggles, but meanwhile, Muggles are dying too. Terror everywhere...panic...confusion...that's how it used to be. "Well, times like that bring out the best in some people and the worst in others. Crouch's principles might've been good in the beginning - I wouldn't know. He rose quickly through the Ministry, and he started ordering very harsh measures against Voldemort's supporters. The Aurors were given new powers - powers to kill rather than capture, for instance. And I wasn't the only one who was handed straight to the dementors without trial. Crouch fought violence with violence, and authorized the use of the Unforgivable Curses against suspects. I would say he became as ruthless and cruel as many on the Dark Side. He had his supporters, mind you - plenty of people thought he was going about things the right way, and there were a lot of witches and wizards clamoring for him to take over as Minister of Magic. When Voldemort disappeared, it looked like only a matter of time until Crouch got the top job. But then something rather unfortunate happened...." Sirius smiled grimly. "Crouch's own son was caught with a group of Death Eaters who'd managed to talk their way out of Azkaban. Apparently they were trying to find Voldemort and return him to power." "Crouch's son was caught?" gasped Hermione. "Yep," said Sirius, throwing his chicken bone to Buckbeak, flinging himself back down on the ground beside the loaf of bread, and tearing it in half. "Nasty little shock for old Barty, I'd I magine. Should have spent a bit more time at home with his family, shouldn't he? Ought to have left the office early once in a while...gotten to know his own son." He began to wolf down large pieces of bread. "Was his son a Death Eater?" said Harry. "No idea," said Sirius, still stuffing down bread. "I was in Azkaban myself when he was brought in. This is mostly stuff I've found out since I got out. The boy was definitely caught in the company of people I'd bet my life were Death Eaters - but he might have been in the wrong place at the wrong time, just like the house-elf." "Did Crouch try and get his son off?" Hermione whispered. Sirius let out a laugh that was much more like a bark. "Crouch let his son off? I thought you had the measure of him, Hermione! Anything that threatened to tarnish his reputation had to go; he had dedicated his whole life to becoming Minister of Magic. You saw him dismiss a devoted house-elf because she associated him with the Dark Mark again - doesn't that tell you what he's like? Crouch's fatherly affection stretched just far enough to give his son a trial, and by all accounts, it wasn't much more than an excuse for Crouch to show how much he hated the boy...then he sent him straight to Azkaban." "He gave his own son to the dementors?" asked Harry quietly. "That's right," said Sirius, and he didn't look remotely amused now. "I saw the dementors bringing him in, watched them through the bars in my cell door. He can't have been more than nineteen. They took him into a cell near mine. He was screaming for his mother by nightfall. He went quiet after a few days, though...they all went quiet in the end...except when they shrieked in their sleep...." For a moment, the deadened look in Sirius's eyes became more pronounced than ever, as though shutters had closed behind them. "So he's still in Azkaban?" Harry said. "No," said Sirius dully. "No, he's not in there anymore. He died about a year after they brought him in." "He died?" "He wasn't the only one," said Sirius bitterly. "Most go mad in there, and plenty stop eating in the end. They lose the will to live. You could always tell when a death was coming, because the dementors could sense it, they got excited. That boy looked pretty sickly when he arrived. Crouch being an important Ministry member, he and his wife were allowed a deathbed visit. That was the last time I saw Barty Crouch, half carrying his wife past my cell. She died herself, apparently, shortly afterward. Grief. Wasted away just like the boy. Crouch never came for his son's body. The dementors buried him outside the fortress; I watched them do it." Sirius threw aside the bread he had just lifted to his mouth and instead picked up the flask of pumpkin juice and drained it. "So old Crouch lost it all, just when he thought he had it made," he continued, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand. "One moment, a hero, poised to become Minister of Magic...next, his son dead, his wife dead, the family name dishonored, and, so I've heard since I escaped, a big drop in popularity. Once the boy had died, people started feeling a bit more sympathetic toward the son and started asking how a nice young lad from a good family had gone so badly astray. The conclusion was that his father never cared much for him. So Cornelius Fudge got the top job, and Crouch was shunted sideways into the Department of International Magical Cooperation." There was a long silence. Harry was thinking of the way Crouch's eyes had bulged as he'd looked down at his disobedient house-elf back in the wood at the Quidditch World Cup. This, then, must have been why Crouch had overreacted to Winky being found beneath the Dark Mark. It had brought back memories of his son, and the old scandal, and his fall from grace at the Ministry. "Moody says Crouch is obsessed with catching Dark wizards," Harry told Sirius. "Yeah, I've heard it's become a bit of a mania with him," said Sirius, nodding. "If you ask me, he still thinks he can bring back the old popularity by catching one more Death Eater." "And he sneaked up here to search Snape's office!" said Ron triumphantly, looking at Hermione. "Yes, and that doesn't make sense at all," said Sirius. "Yeah, it does!" said Ron excitedly, but Sirius shook his head. "Listen, if Crouch wants to investigate Snape, why hasn't he been coming to judge the tournament? It would be an ideal excuse to make regular visits to Hogwarts and keep an eye on him." "So you think Snape could be up to something, then?" asked Harry, but Hermione broke in. "Look, I don't care what you say, Dumbledore trusts Snape -" "Oh give it a rest, Hermione," said Ron impatiently. "I know Dumbledores brilliant and everything, but that doesn't mean a really clever Dark wizard couldn't fool him -" "Why did Snape save Harry's life in the first year, then? Why didn't he just let him die?" "I dunno - maybe he thought Dumbledore would kick him out-" "What d'you think, Sirius?" Harry said loudly, and Ron and Hermione stopped bickering to listen. "I think they've both got a point," said Sirius, looking thoughtfully at Ron and Hermione. "Ever since I found out Snape was teaching here, I've wondered why Dumbledore hired him. Snape's always been fascinated by the Dark Arts, he was famous for it at school. Slimy, oily, greasy-haired kid, he was," Sirius added, and Harry and Ron grinned at each other. "Snape knew more curses when he arrived at school than half the kids in seventh year, and he was part of a gang of Slytherins who nearly all turned out to be Death Eaters." Sirius held up his fingers and began ticking off names. "Rosier and Wilkes - they were both killed by Aurors the year before Voldemort fell. The Lestranges - they're a married couple - they're in Azkaban. Avery - from what I've heard he wormed his way out of trouble by saying he'd been acting under the Imperius Curse - he's still at large. But as far as I know, Snape was never even accused of being a Death Eater - not that that means much. Plenty of them were never caught. And Snape's certainly clever and cunning enough to keep himself out of trouble." "Snape knows Karkaroff pretty well, but he wants to keep that quiet," said Ron. "Yeah, you should've seen Snape's face when Karkaroff turned up in Potions yesterday!" said Harry quickly. "Karkaroff wanted to talk to Snape, he says Snape's been avoiding him. Karkaroff looked really worried. He showed Snape something on his arm, but I couldn't see what it was." He showed Snape something on his arm?" said Sirius, looking frankly bewildered. He ran his fingers distractedly through his filthy hair, then shrugged again. "Well, I've no idea what that's about...but if Karkaroff's genuinely worried, and he's going to Snape for answers..." Sirius stared at the cave wall, then made a grimace of frustration. "There's still the fact that Dumbledore trusts Snape, and I know Dumbledore trusts where a lot of other people wouldn't, but I just can't see him letting Snape teach at Hogwarts if he'd ever worked for Voldemort." "Why are Moody and Crouch so keen to get into Snape's office then?" said Ron stubbornly. "Well," said Sirius slowly, "I wouldn't put it past Mad-Eye to have searched every single teacher's office when he got to Hogwarts. He takes his Defense Against the Dark Arts seriously, Moody. I'm not sure he trusts anyone at all, and after the things he's seen, it's not surprising. I'll say this for Moody, though, he never killed if he could help it. Always brought people in alive where possible. He was tough, but he never descended to the level of the Death Eaters. Crouch, though...he's a different matter...is he really ill? If he is, why did he make the effort to drag himself up to Snape's office? And if he's not...what's he up to? What was he doing at the World Cup that was so important he didn't turn up in the Top Box? What's he been doing while he should have been judging the tournament?" Sirius lapsed into silence, still staring at the cave wall. Buckbeak was ferreting around on the rocky floor, looking for bones he might have overlooked. Finally, Sirius looked up at Ron. "You say your brother's Crouch's personal assistant? Any chance you could ask him if he's seen Crouch lately?" "I can try," said Ron doubtfully. "Better not make it sound like I reckon Crouch is up to anything dodgy, though. Percy loves Crouch." "And you might try and find out whether they've got any leads on Bertha Jorkins while you're at it," said Sirius, gesturing to the second copy of the Daily Prophet. "Bagman told me they hadn't," said Harry. "Yes, he's quoted in the article in there," said Sirius, nodding at the paper. "Blustering on about how bad Bertha's memory is. Well, maybe she's changed since I knew her, but the Bertha I knew wasn't forgetful at all - quite the reverse. She was a bit dim, but she had an excellent memory for gossip. It used to get her into a lot of trouble; she never knew when to keep her mouth shut. I can see her being a bit of a liability at the Ministry of Magic...maybe that's why Bagman didn't bother to look for her for so long...." Sirius heaved an enormous sigh and rubbed his shadowed eyes. "What's the time?" Harry checked his watch, then remembered it hadn't been working since it had spent over an hour in the lake. "It's half past three," said Hermione. "You'd better get back to school," Sirius said, getting to his feet. "Now listen..." He looked particularly hard at Harry. "I don't want you lot sneaking out of school to see me, all right? Just send notes to me here. I still want to hear about anything odd. But you're not to go leaving Hogwarts without permission; it would be an ideal opportunity for someone to attack you." "No one's tried to attack me so far, except a dragon and a couple of grindylows," Harry said, but Sirius scowled at him. "I don't care...I'll breathe freely again when this tournament's over, and that's not until June. And don't forget, if you're talking about me among yourselves, call me Snuffles, okay?" He handed Harry the empty napkin and flask and went to pat Buckbeak good-bye. "I'll walk to the edge of the village with you," said Sirius, "see if I can scrounge another paper." He transformed into the great black dog before they left the cave, and they walked back down the mountainside with him, across the boulder-strewn ground, and back to the stile. Here he allowed each of them to pat him on the head, before turning and setting off at a run around the outskirts of the village. Harry, Ron, and Hermione made their way back into Hogsmeade and up toward Hogwarts. "Wonder if Percy knows all that stuff about Crouch?" Ron said as they walked up the drive to the castle. "But maybe he doesn't care...It'd probably just make him admire Crouch even more. Yeah, Percy loves rules. He'd just say Crouch was refusing to break them for his own son." "Percy would never throw any of his family to the dementors," said Hermione severely. "I don't know," said Ron. "If he thought we were standing in the way of his career...Percy's really ambitious, you know...." They walked up the stone steps into the entrance hall, where the delicious smells of dinner wafted toward them from the Great Hall. "Poor old Snuffles," said Ron, breathing deeply. "He must really like you. Harry....Imagine having to live off rats."

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Chapter 26: The Second Task
“He, Ron and Hermione were sitting at the very back of the Charms class with a table to themselves. They were supposed to be practising the opposite of the Summoning Charm today – the Banishing Charm. Owing to the potential for nasty accidents when objects kept flying across the room, Professor Flitwick had given each student a stack of cushions on which to practise, the theory being that these wouldn’t hurt anyone if they went off target. It was a good theory, but it wasn’t working very well. Neville’s aim was so poor that he kept accidentally sending much heavier things flying across the room – Professor Flitwick, for instance. ‘Just forget the egg for a minute, all right?’ Harry hissed, as Professor Flitwick went whizzing resignedly past them, landing on top of a large cabinet.” – Of all the crimes the movie adaption of Goblet of Fire did commit, not including this scene is the biggest.
“With two days left, Harry started to go off food again.” – Harry is always described as skinny and that it is due his upbringing at the Dursleys, who never gave him enough to eat and denied him food as a punishment. People like Harry, who grew up without the security of always having something to eat, usually never miss a chance to eat. And yet Harry does, which is a clear sign of the pressure he is currently feeling. Harry knows what real hunger feels like, and yet he can’t eat.
Just an appreciation for all the titles of the books Harry, Ron & Hermione look through in order to find out how he can breathe underwater: Olde and Forgotten Bewitchments and Charmes; Saucy Tricks for Tricky Sorts; Weird Wizarding Dilemmas and Their Solutions; Madcap Magic for Wacky Warlock; A Guide to Medieval Sorcery; An Anthology of Eighteenth-Century Charms; Dreadful Denizens of the Deep; Powers You Never Knew You Had and What to Do With Them Now You’ve Wised Up; Where There’s a Wand, There’s a Way.
The champions have to rescue the person they would miss most from the Merepeople, and it is interesting to look who that person is for each champion. For Krum and Cedric it is their respective Yule Ball date, Hermione and Cho, and for Fleur it is her little sister (maybe they were afraid she wouldn’t care enough about Roger Davies to actually save him). Of course it is arguable if this is the person each of them would miss the most (at least in Krum and Cedric’s case, because they obviously would miss their family as well), or if they simply picked someone they knew the champion cared about a lot. The fact that Harry had to rescue Ron however makes great sense, given the latest development in their friendship, their first big fight, and Harry’s realization how much he really needs Ron. And given that the other two male champions had to save their love interest I wonder if there for some time a rumour was going around about Harry and Ron being a thing.
Dobby basically serves the role of the butler (and he is one in a way), someone who hears all kind of things, a keeper of secrets, and who due to his nature is always overseen.
Basically what gets Harry through the second task is his kindness. It is because he helped Cedric that he got the clue about the Egg from him. And it is because he had been kind to Dobby (and freed him) that Dobby gives him what he needs to perform the second task.
Speaking of magical plants like Gillyweed: How likely is it Muggles find it and try to eat it and die because they suffocate?
A lot has been said about Harry not only rescuing his own hostage but trying to save the others as well. Ron later belittles him for taking the song serious, thinking Dumbledore would have let anyone die. For one thing it shows Harry being heroic. Which in this book is largely expressed by his desire to help others: telling Cedric about the dragons, trying to save all hostages, helping Cedric again in the maze. But of course it also shows how traumatized Harry already is by the events of the past. Because Harry is by now used to not expect any help. He is used to take over the responsibility because nobody else does, the very least an adult. He was alone facing Quirell. He was alone facing Tom Riddle and the Basilisk. He was alone facing a horde of Dementors, saving not only his own life but that of Hermione and Sirius as well. Once the task is over Harry is able to think rational – of course nobody was meant to get hurt, let alone die. But Harry can’t think rational underneath the lake, with Merepeople threatening him and the time slowly running up. His mind acts to what he thinks is an emergency situation, a life-and-death-situation. Because he had his fair share of those before. He acts on instinct alone, and his instinct tells him to make sure he and everyone around him survives.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Chapter 27: Padfoot Returns
It is a great example of double standard how both Ron and Hermione get attention for being a hostage in the Second Task, but in very different ways. Ron is seen as a heroic, it is exciting and adventurous, and people ask him to retell what happened. Hermione however gets teased for being the thing Krum would miss the most. And even though it isn’t explicitly mentioned who teases her I’m pretty sure it is by other girls. And I think it tells us something about an almost natural solidarity between men, that doesn’t exist that way with women (or girls). Women should support each other, but very often we don’t. And I think part of that problem is society and how we are to a certain degree raised to see other women as competition. We compete over the attention of men, because men give us value. Which of course is utter bullshit, but I saw enough women in my life constantly comparing themselves to other women and acting like a bitch to know that this behaviour is still quite common. I had to actively unlearn to compare myself with every other woman or to dislike someone just because they had won in the genetic lottery.
With the article about the supposedly Harry/Hermione/Krum-Love-Triangle, what Hermione bothers the most is not what Rita Skeeter made of her (“She’s made you out to be some sort of – of scarlet woman!”), but rather that she invaded her privacy. Nobody but Hermione and Krum know that he indeed invited her over the summer, and given Rita’s reputation she could have made that part up. So instead of just writing an article that let Hermione look bad she wrote one letting Hermione know that she is no longer safe, that she has ways of overhearing private conversations and there is nothing Hermione can do about it.
Also, again Harry and Ron react quite different to the article. Once Ron knows that Hermione was invited by Krum his main interest whether she accepted that invention or not. Unlike Harry.
“‘Don’t lie to me,’ Snape hissed, his fathomless black eyes boring into Harry’s. ‘Boomslang skin. Gillyweed. Both come from my private stores, and I know who stole them.’ Harry stared back at Snape, determined not to blink, or to look guilty. In truth, he hadn’t stolen either of these things from Snape. Hermione had taken the Boomslang skin back in their second year – they had needed it for the Polyjuice Potion – and while Snape had suspected Harry at the time, he had never been able to prove it. Dobby, of course, had stolen the Gillyweed.” – Harry assumes that Snape refers to the Boomslang skin Hermione had stolen two years ago – and reminds the audience that it is an ingredient for Polyjuice Potion – but Snape refers to a recent theft, because this had been the reason Barty Crouch broke into his office after all. But neither Harry or Snape make this connection, neither wonders why someone would need Boomslang skin, or if someone uses Polyjuice Potion.
Snape informs us that Veritaserum is controlled by very strict Ministry guidelines. Just like love potions (who are mentioned in this chapter again as something Hermione supposedly uses) there are a lot of consent issues here. Of course Veritaserum can be very useful, but it also very unethical. The person who is given the Serum has no longer control over what they say. And Snape here threatens to use it on Harry and Dumbledore later uses it on Crouch without giving a second thought about guidelines.
“But Sirius shook his head and said, ‘She’s got the measure of Crouch better than you have, Ron. If you want to know what a man’s like, take a good look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals.’” – Oh the irony. Because this comes back to Sirius in the next book, and his treatment of Kreacher, and how it ultimately resulted in Sirius’s death. Sirius obviously had his reasons to treat Kreacher the way he did and obviously he didn’t deserve to die because of it, but still. I recently saw a post about writing subplots and what makes a good subplot, and the thing about the Potter series is that some of the subplots have their ultimately payoff only at the end of the series, not the book where they start. The House-Elf-subplot starts in book 2 with the introduction of Dobby, but Dobby’s story ends in book 7. We see the mistreatment of House-Elves, we see the severe consequences of it with Sirius and Kreacher, and ultimately we see in book 7 Voldemort’s ignorance of House-Elves and Harry’s kindness towards Dobby and Kreacher helping Harry defeating Voldemort. Anyway, this line always stuck with me, look how someone treats their inferiors not their equals to understand the kind of person they are. It’s a good advice.
“Terror everywhere … panic … confusion … that’s how it used to be. ‘Well, times like that bring out the best in some people, and the worst in others. […]Crouch fought violence with violence, and authorised the use of the Unforgivable Curses against suspects. I would say he became as ruthless and cruel as many on the Dark side.” – You know, back when I was still watching The Walking Dead I think this was something the show did very well (and despite its flaws it is worth to watch it): put people in a very extreme situation (the total collapse of civilisation) and see how some become the best and others the worst version of themselves. And that’s the thing about Crouch: he might have been on the “right” side of the war, but his methods weren’t. It asks the question if the cause justify the means. That it is not just enough to do things for the right reasons but how you do it. And if you tolerate methods that the ones you fight use (torture, murder), what does it make of you? Sirius is right in his claim that Barty Crouch was as cruel as the Death Eaters he tried to stop. That just because he was on the winning side of the war he isn’t necessarily a good man. And we see here how the morality of the series has evolved – in the first book characters were simply good or bad. But the older these characters get the more they realize the world isn’t as simple as that. And it is not just Crouch. By the end of the book we have a character like Fudge, who isn’t a Death Eater or evil per se, but whose actions help Voldemort to gain power again.
“Once the boy had died, people started feeling a bit more sympathetic towards him, and started asking how a nice young lad from a good family had gone so badly astray. The conclusion was that his father never cared much for him.” – I’m always a bit conflicted when a character’s motivation is basically just daddy issues (or mommy issues). Yes Barty Crouch wasn’t the best father, and perhaps not a good man. And his son had every right to cut ties with him. It doesn’t justify however that he became a Death Eater and tortured and killed people. It is too easy to blame all of this on his father. A lot of people have messed up childhoods and issues because of it. A lot of them still manage to become decent people. You know as they say: cool motive, still murder.
It is also interesting how both Ron and Hermione try to get Sirius’s approval, how Sirius’s opinion matters the most. Because despite being an adult he treats them as equals, he wants to hear their opinions. And in some ways he falls back to the role he had at school: the popular kid everyone wants to be friends with.
Sirius has no idea what it means that Karkaroff showed Snape his arm, implying he doesn’t know Death Eaters wore their Dark Mark at this point. It could be explained that of course Sirius was imprisoned right after the war ended, and that this particular piece of information only became public after the war and the trials. But Sirius said he had caught up on what happened after his imprisonment, that is how he learned about Crouch and his son, and yet he doesn’t know about the Dark Mark. Just as he is unaware that Snape actually had been accused to be Death Eater, but Dumbledore vouched for him. I think it is rather that at this point of the story this information should not be available for Harry, so Sirius can’t know about it either.
“‘There’s still the fact that Dumbledore trusts Snape, and I know Dumbledore trusts where a lot of other people wouldn’t, but I just can’t see him letting Snape teach at Hogwarts if he’d ever worked for Voldemort.’” – Oh, you sweet summer child. If Sirius would have known just how much Snape was involved in James and Lily’s death he probably would have killed him, damn the consequences. And while Dumbledore did trust Snape, I wonder if he ever forgave Snape or even liked him, or if he simply used him, because Dumbledore after all is a great strategist.
“He takes his Defence Against the Dark Arts seriously, Moody. I’m not sure he trusts anyone at all, and after the things he’s seen, it’s not surprising. I’ll say this for Moody, though, he never killed if he could help it. Always brought people in alive where possible. He was tough, but he never descended to the level of the Death Eaters.” – The fact that he was imprisoned and impersonated for a year won’t help Moody’s trust issues. But here we see it again: look at the actions of a man to tell you what kind of person he is. Moody never killed if he didn’t have to. And we see this later with Harry, who uses Unforgiveable Curses, but never kills. He even defeats Voldemort without actively killing him. And that is very important.
“‘Percy would never throw any of his family to the Dementors,’ said Hermione severely. ‘I don’t know,’ said Ron. ‘If he thought we were standing in the way of his career … Percy’s really ambitious, you know …’” – Which of course is already a foretelling of the rift between Percy and his family in book 5. But from a larger point of view, there are several supposedly good characters, and we see how their ambitions and their claim for power corrupted them. Crouch lost his family and reputation for it and became as cruel as the Death Eaters themselves, because he wanted to become Minister of Magic. Fudge refused to accept the truth to keep this position. Percy temporarily cut all ties with his family because of his position and ambition in the ministry. Dumbledore made some regrettable choices in his youth because of it, and lost his sister. Power can corrupt and I think it is Dumbledore who once said it is best given to those who don’t want it, like Harry.
