btw i want u guys to know i have been So brave recently. i cleaned and reorganized the entire kitchen over the last week or 2 and today i started tackling my room and good fucking god i have so much stuff and none of this resonates with me as a person so when i finally clean it all the local thrift stores are going to be PACKED and my room is going to have ABSOLUTELY NO CHARACTER

Since last time I bounced off a few more games, so let's note them for posterity.

After finally giving up on TWEWY for good I tried NEO: TWEWY because people kept saying it fixed a lot of stuff that didn't work very well in the original. Sort of? It definitely feels a lot better to play because it's not super clunky touchscreen nonsense, but that still only brings it up to mediocre. I'm not convinced Squenix knows how to make a fully real time action combat system, because even the ones people tell me are good keep kinda sucking (although I still haven't tried FF7R or FF16 yet).

Also I didn't really like the starting duo in NEO: TWEWY as much as Neku/Shiki in the original. The new guys have potential and maybe get more interesting later, but I really miss the weirdos who antagonize each other but are stuck with each other vibes from the beginning of the first game. Shoka was the only character that really got my attention in the first few hours (aside from occasional glimpses from Rindo), but she barely exists up to that point unfortunately. Might go back to it at some point, but don't count on it.

And then I also wasn't super into Tales of Vesperia either. I was really surprised it was a 360 game originally, because it feels dated enough to be a PS2 game. And it's not like I haven't played older Tales games before. Tales of Symphonia was great back when it was new, and I even played the fan translation of the original SNES Tales of Phantasia before they started releasing games in English, but I might've just been spoiled by newer games at this point. The characters and story just didn't really grab my interest, and it felt a little clunkier than I was in the mood for putting up with right now, and mostly it just makes me want to go back and finish Tales of Berseria because that one's great. Unfortunately it's also on my computer, and that's hard for me to play games on right now because I can't hold it six inches from my face like the Switch.

And then I also also very briefly tried They Bleed Pixels, which I had been meaning to do several years ago but just never got around to. Not really my thing I guess. Nothing really seems wrong with it, but the movement and combat style just wasn't really clicking with me even though it seems to all work fine and be fairly expressive. I dig the art style for the intro and other larger more detailed stuff though (the in-game stuff is fine too I guess but less compelling).

And then I actually played all the way through Aria of Sorrow, but that one gets a separate post.

first impression - my god you can really tell this game was made in the 2000's by this outfit alone impression now - a wonderfully complex and flawed character who is an absolute delight to watch grow and embrace her issues. her story is so unapologetic - jealousy is an ugly thing, but she's able to confront it and better herself. I adore her and the game does such a good job with attaching both you and Neku to her. favorite moment - her "reunion" with Neku in Neo where he can see her but she can't see him - but she knows he's there regardless. it got me good when I first played. idea for a story - I'd looove to see more details of what she's up to between the original twewy and the sequel!! working through her grief over Neku, working with Eri on starting up Gatto Nero - plus adjusting to living again after being dead is always a fun trope. unpopular opinion - admittedly I haven't delved too deep into the twewy fandom so I'm not sure what's popular lol but. I really wish we could've seen more of her in Neo. I know not Every OG character can play a major role but for being one of the poster characters of the original, she really doesn't get much, especially compared to Beat. favorite relationship - this isn't even a question for me - her and Neku just make me want to blow up if I think too long about them. have yall seen the anime scene of them meeting up at Hachiko in the Realground?? Neku's face?? love at first sight. literally. i'm sick favorite headcanon - good god have you ever seen a more transgender character. transfemme shiki is so canon to me

Do you have any predictions/guesses of what other Tribe Nine tribes could be?

Chuuou: No idea because Shinagawa already covered businessmen and Setagaya already covered money.

Shinjuku: Maybe something of a slut tribe referencing Kabukichou's nightlife.

Shibuya: Gyaru/skateboard punk aesthetics, see TWEWY for reference.

Toshima: My image of Ikebukuro is way too colored by Durarara to have any real value, but trying to distance myself from that, I guess they could have a fujoshi tribe settled in Ikebukuro's Otome Road.

Bunkyou: Academic nerd Tribe settled at Tokyo University's campus, easy.

Meguro: Uh, mad artist Tribe from the Liberal Arts University?

Arakawa: Only ward without a Starbucks. Only ward without a Thirty One Ice Cream. Only ward without a Mujirushi. Only ward without a highway. The Tokyo-Yokohama-Touhoku train line crosses Arakawa without a single stop in that ward. Only ward in the Yamanote circle without a train to Yokohama. One of the only two wards without a Book Off. One of the only two wards without a Kaldi Coffee Farm. The low-quality hotel slanders. The memes about Arakawa not being part of Tokyo. The Arakawa River flood in 2019. Arakawa has such an amazing history of getting the short end of the stick that it needs to have a poor butt monkey Tribe. I'm feeling the vibes of Miwa from Jujutsu.

Sumida: That's a tough one. Sumida has a lot of eccentric sightseeing spots, like the Super Dry Hall or the Sky Tree, but they don't have a distinct aesthetic and identity as Taitou. I guess they could be the weirdo Tribe, but I don't know what flavor of weirdo. Something more colorful than Oota is a given, but what next?

Koutou: The Trash War was such a historical event for the ward that I guess they could go with a clean freak Tribe, idk.

Nakano: The only notorious thing in Nakano is Nakano Broadway. I really can't see what other options Too Kyo has. But I also have no idea what a Nakano Broadway-themed Tribe would look like.

Sugitami: Uh... take Kouenji's nickname of "Japan's India" super literally. I really can't come up with anything.

Kita: Kita has a huge history of its youth moving to less marginalized regions to the point the ward is practically occupied only by senior citizens. Make it the grampa Tribe. The poster we saw has some really old characters, so they could very much be Kita's players.

Itabashi: Is there even anything in Itabashi?

Nerima: That's another one that's hard to get ideas for. I guess it can be the kid Tribe in reference to Nerima being the newest ward? Make them middle and high schoolers from Ooizumi Academy for the meme.

Katsushika: Kochikame references. We know Kodaka well enough to know this is unavoidable.

Edogawa: Completely out of ideas. With Itabashi they could make a Tribe of exaggeratedly normal people to illustrate the lack of anything notorious, but Edogawa doesn't have even that.

Something I started speculating with other TWEWY fans a bit ago was which month TWEWY is taking place. While playing I entered a battle and the above sign was shown which says October 8th. And we were like, cool, TWEWY takes place in October. Then I went into a search for dates shown anywhere in the game and I found some more. There are two signs in West Exit Bus Terminal that have March 4th - April 5th & February 3rd - March 4th dates. So that confused things. And later I found a poster at Udagawa Back Streets with a March 21st date. So yeah, that didn’t help to reach a result. And after that I found that there are characters thinking about Christmas. So, my headcannon is that the October sign is a leftover sign, TWEWY’s timeline is nearing Christmas (Maybe November / early December) and there are promotion signs and posters that promote events coming in the first months of the new year. Let’s not forget you can buy a New Year’s Gift at the shop.

VERDICT

Quality of Curation: I say this every month, but for a romance-based box, which you think might limit the selection, there is nonetheless a huge variety on offer. There’s contemporary romance and paranormal romance, teenage characters and adults, characters who are out or still determining their orientation, those who are out for casual hook-ups or for something more meaningful…

I do however have one nitpicky criticism – I wish there had been a bit more representation of the rest of the LGBT+ acronym, as 90% of the stories focused on gay men. However, the ebooks were generously donated by the authors, so BLMB had no say in the category of stories provided and as that is the most popular subgenre out there, I’m not surprised gay romance ended up dominating the box.

Worth It? This box above all others before it was DEFINITELY value for money! The three books came to $56.80 AUD, and all the e-books were a total of $72.59 AUD, so there was a value of over $100 for everything included!
