It’s time for me to ramble about my Splatoon characters <3
Gonna be a long post, I can’t stop talking about these squiggly guys
First up is Yuki <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He’s actually my in-game character and has been since I started playing Splatoon 2 in 2019.
ANYWAY He’s 19, aro/ace and uses he/they pronouns. Proficient with Dualie Squelchers and Heavy Splatling but do Not put a charger in his hands he will let you die (accidentally)
Family was part of the Octarian group forced underground post-Great Turf War. He grew up in Inkopolis Square after escaping. I say his family is “part of” because I’m pretty sure not all of the Octarian race was forced away. Some of them had to have escaped.
Being a pro ink-battler would be cool, he was a pretty decent soldier underground, but back then he battled for survival and recognition. Turf and Ranked made fighting fun. Took the games too seriously at first. He was used to the harsh training underground and knew that either you had what it took or you didn’t. And if he didn’t (aka being discharged from the military) then what else was he to do?
Certainly there were other jobs underground; the food hunters who scavenged the barren lands they lived in, “scientists” and “electricians” who worked in ways to keep their world alive & running despite the circumstances.
(It’s in quotes because,,,,I mean I can’t really say they’re qualified. Their knowledge would be helpful but not equivalent to a scientific or engineering degree up in Inkopolis)
He's a little ashamed to admit that, for quite some time, he harbored hatred for his related species (Inklings). They have everything, took everything from his own people yet still have the nerve to complain and be ungrateful. But he worked through this & doesn’t think like that anymore.
Had a lot of reflecting to do. Often would throw himself into Ranked to forget about it, but that wouldn’t last long. He had to come to terms with the fact that he has nothing on the surface. It’s what his people dreamed of, and he’s not trying to be ungrateful, but it’s not like he had a family, or anywhere to go at first. Technically he had it all in his old underground home; stable income, amicable neighbors, decent reputation due to his military service & status. But up in Inkopolis he has none of that. He lived in the shadows of alleys, no money and no way to get it,
Honestly if Inklings knew of his Octarian military service they would likely only distance more from him.
Speaking of Inklings; they were,,,alright. Some of them couldn’t even tell he was an Octoling from underground until he spoke. Those who could tell showed him nothing but hostility. It doesn’t help much that he didn’t know a lick of modern Inklish.
(The most Inklish he knew was of the old script used 100+ years ago that they teach underground, so he talks like a grandpa)
He spent his early days hiding in alleys watching the locals go about their days. He would always notice the younger Inklings with weapons going to and from the Great Zapfish Tower (we know it’s the battle lobby but that’s what he’d call it) and a weapons shop.
He went to the Battle tower first, but quickly realized you need both a weapon and gear to play (play what though? He had no idea but he’s interested now). After being pointed in the right direction, he was freshly equipped with a splattershot jr, basic gear and ready for turf war.
For a while, he kept losing because he was focused on getting kills, and his teammates did Not like him. It doesn’t help that he can’t understand them either, so when they say to play objective (ink the ground) he doesn’t listen.
It took him some months, a lot of awkward hovering around inkling convos, and a good amount of teammates yelling at him, for him to learn more modern Inklish. When he did, he finally got to read the rules of turf war & gave it another shot. Things got better from there; he earned money for a small apartment, got more weapons, became more social (he still talks like a grandpa most of the time), but he still has that self-reflecting to do.
His first Splatfest was a bit of a disaster? It was Pancakes vs Waffles and he thought there was an absolute correct answer. Making decisions in the military is more cut & dry and each option has consequences so it’s important to pick the right choice. He tried getting people to understand that pancakes were the better choice and that something bad would befall the people who chose waffle (then waffle won and he had to eat his words. He kinda panicked thinking something bad actually would happen)
What drew him to the Splatlands was that people kept asking him if he was from there. The inklings on the surface eventually kinda learn that Octolings live in the Splatlands, but few know that many of them survived underground. When he answers that he’s from the underground they give him a weird look. Eventually he decides to visit the Splatlands and loves it!
It’s an organized mess and there’s a bigger presence of his own culture there compared to Inkopolis Square. It’s a little different but still of the same roots.
-
I also wanna touch on why he’s trans since like,,it wasn’t just a random choice to add spice to his traits. So back when I got Splatoon 2 in early 2019, I played & beat Octo Expansion. I usually used the male character. Something about him just made me go “yaaayayay.” At this point in life, I knew I wasn’t trans but I had recently experimented with chest binding and he/him pronouns, and decided that it wasn’t the right fit for me. Maybe that’s why I used the male model? Maybe not, it’s not important really.
I used that male Octoling kind of as a persona. If I wanted to draw a Splatoon doodle about me and some friends then I would use our in-game characters rather than us irl. Makes sense. But drawing him was kinda,,,odd. I wanted him to be the In-game model but I am a female irl and have a fairly large chest, so I wanted my drawings to reflect that. All I did was slap in a bump for the chest when I drew him, but that was enough for me. And since the character in-game is male, I kept referring to him as such.
Over time (and moving into Splat3) my character became less of me. I drew and imagined him as confident and loud and in all these scenarios I wouldn’t be in. Once I started feeling disconnected from him, I knew something had to change (and I had become more open with online friends, so I had no need to hide behind my character anyway).
I decided to separate entirely(?) from him. While some things that I am (aro/ace) and do (play dualies & heavy splatling) remain as part of him, he is no longer an extension of me. I gave him a backstory, along w/ Redd who I will get into later, and I drew him as the character I wanted him to be rather than who I am.
That was a lot, and I’m not done because now it’s time for:
Redd <3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(I don’t have as many drawings of her </3)
Despite the outfit and outward demeanor, is not outspoken or brave like her cousin. She’s soft spoken & introverted & would probably cry if she were yelled at.
Currently pro-ish ink battler, happened on accident though! She was doing some turf & ranked for fun but in a few matches she ran into her soon to be teammates who wanted to hang w/ her more.
(In my mind there’s like,,pro ink battle leagues. Like how we have NFL, NBA, etc, Sploon world would have professional Ink Battle leagues. The turf/ranked games they play as young squid-kids is similar to playing football or basketball in school. It’s a hobby/interest that could lead you to the big leagues one day. Unless that’s all canon to Splatoon already)
Yuki is like,,,lowkey jealous bc Redd has all this natural skill & doesn’t even want to be a pro battler. Also it’s a little embarrassing and emasculating that he (a well ranked and respected soldier) performs worse than his squishy cousin.
As I said; she’s not even into ink battles. They’re fun and all but doing it long term is not what she has planned. She had a hard time telling her teammates this & struggles to find excuses to skip practice. (Yuki is helping her become more confident & outspoken, but progress is slow).
She’s Interested in making music, and enjoys upbeat jams. She’s inspired by, Deep Cut, ChirpyChips & Squid Squad (“Kraken Up” is her Song)
Her teammates aren’t rude or forceful about their practice, they just don’t know that Redd isn’t all that interested. They'd still be friends & even support her music career.
-
As for her and Yuki’s connected history; Redd was born and raised in the Splatlands. Her family used to live around Inkopolis but when word spread about Octarians fate post-Great Turf War (going underground) they successfully fled to the Splatlands where they’ve been living ever since. They were unsuccessful in bringing the entire family, having to split in order for at least half the family to escape.
It isn’t until Yuki is 19 and visits Splitsville that they meet. I don’t really know how or when or why this next part happens; but they open up to each other & as they talk abt their family they realize that the missing pieces of their own family history is filled in by the other’s story. (Lmao I imagine Yuki talking abt his great grandma like “yea her brother kinda left her for dead.” (he’s bitter about it) & Redd just thinks “hm. Reminds me of my great grandad who felt like he left his sister for dead,,,”
(Specifically Redd’s great grandfather escapes w/ his kids but has to leave his sister behind, who ends up being Yuki’s great grandma. (I think I have these familial titles right?)
Anyway yeehaww Yuki & Redd are distant cousins!
(While their shared backstory serves as a good amount of evidence, they do some further genetic testing to prove it for sure.)

What weapons and victory poses would the spiderband have in splatoon 3? (i am bored at work and wanted to make this concept
MILES:
I've seen some people imagine him using various types of dualies, which I think works for him! I've also seen one piece of art where he was using an S-BLAST '92, which I think matches his color scheme pretty good! I would also though like to suggest the clash blaster neo, or maybe even the painbrush!! I think he would like brushes a lot! Otherwise, I think the sloshers would work for him too! Maybe the Slosher Deco or the regular slosher.
For victory poses, I can imagine him using the Flip Out animation, especially for the blaster and brush! I think the Reppin' Inkopolis one (especially for the brush and blaster again) would look rlly cute with him!
Overall, I think he'd be a relatively chill splatoon player, probably hanging out in random turf wars and occasionally doing challenges or maybe ranked. He'd probably like Tableturf if only so he could collect cool-looking cards. He'd probably be a fan of Splatfest too!
GWEN:
She's another one that fits with dualies, I think. The dapple dualies nouveau would probably be right up her alley! I think the custom dualie squelchers would be good too. If not dualies, I can imagine her using a tri-stringer or maybe even a brush. I bet a painbrush woud work for her too!
For victory poses, Roundhouse Ballerina is the most obvious choice (lmao). If not that, then I think Victory Twist would suit her as well!
Gwen strikes me as the kind of player who'd enjoy playing turf war and challenges on her own, but then gets distracted by life and stuff for a couple weeks before going "Oh right I've almost gotten the freshness on my weapon to five stars!" and jumping back in again. She also probably enjoys playing turf war against randos with her friends.
PAVITR:
Pav seems like the kind of guy who does stuff like turf war and challenge mode just for the fun of it but is also really good at it. He's good with his weapons too, and I imagine that he'd use rollers a lot given that he's probably plenty strong enough to wield them efficiently. Maybe not the dynamo roller, but I can see him using other lighter rollers like the Flingza roller or the Big Swig. If not a roller, then I think he'd probably use a Splatling like the Ballpoint or Nautilus.
For emotes, I think Flip Out and Repping Inkopolis really works for him, but I can also see him doing the Stuntin' and Your Move emote. I think maybe he'd do Later Undulator too.
Overall, he'd probably be a very team-oriented player. Almost every mode he does, he'd probably drag a friend into it too so they can play together (and because levelling matchups are bonkers annoying). He probably gets really excited during Splatfest because it means he has the chance to win a 100X battle and get a picture on the raft! He doesn't always win it, but he still does his best during splatfest. He's probably the sort of squid who puts some real thought into which team he wants to go for.
HOBIE:
Hobie definitely uses the dynamo roller. He's probably one of those players who's 2 months away from building his own Gold Dynamo roller because WHEN is it gonna come out??? Other then that, I think he'd probably go for efficient weapons that are a little on the heavier/stronger scale, like the Heavy Splatling or regular e-liter. I bet he would be efficient as hell with an explosher. Maybe he would have a Tenta Sorella Brella or a Splatana Stamper on standby too.
Emote-wise, I can see him using No Chill or Who's Next a lot, Lowdown as well. Maybe even Card Shark, and maybe even You're Welcome when he's feeling a bit mean.
Overall, he's probably one of the players that a casual opponent would see and just go "nope." Although, he's probably pretty chill and a good teacher to new players though, and while I can imagine him being the kind of person who'll charge the enemy with his team, I think he also knows when to stop and save that tactic for ranked battles; he doesn't wanna bully up and coming players in turf war. Also he is probably in the X rank levels, he probably hits S rank/X rank on the regular. But I also imagine he doesn't really enjoy or partipate in any of the big events that much (challenges, splatfest, eggstra work) or doing things like Salmon Run shifts. But I can see him sneaking around Grizzco HQ or even doing a couple shifts during a grizzco weapon roster to see what kind of tech Grizzco has in the closet. He has 100% figured out replicating a Grizzco weapon for casual use and wants to sneak it into a turf or ranked battle just for fun sometime.
Also for note: Everyone except maybe Hobie uses the Nailed It emote too.

my thoughts on new weapons (that ive tried in turf war) + some extra thoughts:
painbrush
its nice. it threatens a lot of weapons and gets quick kills if you can get past the lag before the first swing. trying to use the brush roll mechanic to escape tight spots is pretty hard due to that lag, though. maybe i just suck at the game but every time ive tried it fails.
i like curling bomb on it, a bit finicky but it can catch people off guard well. quick movement alternative to the brush roll is also nice, though it doesnt work as well.
it can combo VERY nicely with wavebreaker. i believe it just straight up kills people on the first swipe if they took wavebreaker damage beforehand but im not 100% sure on that
s-blast
its definitely one of if not the best blaster out right now. it gets kills very quick if you can hit the direct, and abusing tech with jump shots allows for your shots to have little to no shot rng i think which is really good. technical stuff aside, its just really good at killing, though its painting isnt amazing. i think thats why they put sprinkler on it
sprinkler isnt good on this weapon. i just use it to paint and build special. if youre in a pinch it can paint your feet and briefly block an attack, but itd be better to try to get a quick direct with the main weapon
not sure how i feel about reefslider being on this weapon at the moment. it isnt bad, but it isnt good, either. couldve been worse
heavy splatling deco
i only used it for like, 3 games and i dont know how to play this thing, but i like it. it reminds me of naut, probably because it has point sensor and functions better at midline lol
kraken is interesting, it can do the job, though im not good at using kraken so i cant give a reliable opinion on it. i struggled moving from back/midline to frontline to activate it, but that could very well just be a skill issue so take that with a grain of salt
light tetra dualies
okay i used this once so my opinion will definitely change in the future, but i prefer the original kit atm. zipcaster is better but i dont know how to use it lol. i miss my autobombs..
it cant take advantage of sprinkler well, i wish it got literally anything else. im a bit of a sprinkler hater
big swig roller express
okay im a bit of a liar, i havent even played this one at all. but a friend said it combos really well with angle shooter for kills and with ink storm for painting
side note: i fought against someone using one on flounder heights splat zones and they were so annoying (i mean this in a positive manner). we traded zones like every 5 seconds and they killed me many times despite me having the favorable matchup (i was using naut) really fun and tense match
im not gonna main any of them BUT these are all good weapons, some better than others. not sure about the other new releases. still gotta wait for a new naut kit, though... hope it gets suction bomb+trizooka/inkjet 🙏 (it wont)
snipewriter 5h
why is this here? it got the biggest buff ive ever seen in salmon run: each shot from a full charged set deals 240 damage. to put that into perspective, it now:
3-shots steel eels, scrappers, and slammin lids
4-shots drizzlers (easier one-cycle from before)
can now one cycle and 5-shot big shots, armored flipper floppers
call me crazy, but this thing went from a charger that was good based on niche uses to genuinely being one of the best chargers in salmon run. used this in the most recent rotation and it perform REALLY well. when i discovered how quickly it can kill flipper floppers my jaw literally dropped mid-match. ive always loved using snipewriter in sr but, damn, its amazing now
thats all i have to say

I was gonna give Splatoon 3 a break but the next day after my last post I jumped into Splatoon 2 for a bit of Turf Wars for old time's sake then I ended up reinstalling 3 on the same day because I'm too hooked on it! XD I decided to try leveling up all my weapons to 1 star again so that I can get a license from that to buy more and eventually have a nice little pile of them to use when new weapons come out! It... um... some of the weapons make me wanna yeet Sheldon into the ocean because of how much I hate them.
Now that the new season started, I've gone back to work on the new ones that came out! The S-BLAST '92 is super amazing as a concept but blasters in general aren't my thing because of how slow they are but I'll keep working at it to git gud at this one because I really want to use it! Since I had already leveled up all my blasters to 1 star that were already out during the Fresh Season, I've already known about some of its quirks like blaster hopping so it wasn't much of a shock to use the S-BLAST '92! I'm keeping track of what weapons I've leveled up to 1 and noting down how I feel about them so that it's easier for me to remember which ones besides my mains are fun to use and which ones are trash! Nothing will make me like the chargers though. Well maybe if they add a new one based on another Nintendo controller but I can't think of any that would suffer such a fate.
I've been keeping up with the Splat 3 news and I'M SO HAPPY MY HAT IS BACK!!!
Tumblr media
I've decided that I'll rearrange some outifts and abilities so that I'll have one for my N-ZAP '89 and S-BLAST '92! The default outfit for my OC, Arrows, is the Do-Rag, Cap, & Glasses/Retro Gamer Jersey/Crazy Arrows but I've said a few times that he wears the Takoroka Rainbow Tie Dye underneath the jacket! I've also grown so fond of the Seafoam 'Phones and it kinda makes me feel like Dashie (I wish he'd play Splatoon 3 so I can laugh at him raging at that! 😭) so I've decided to keep using it for an alternative outfit!
N-ZAP '89 outfit: Do-Rag, Cap, & Glasses/Retro Gamer Jersey/Crazy Arrows
S-BLAST '92 outfit: Seafoam 'Phones/Takoroka Rainbow Tie Dye/Crazy Arrows
My current outfit, Seafoam 'Phones/Retro Gamer Jersey/Crazy Arrows, has all its abilities in place for the N-ZAP '89 and I'm currently trying to farm for more abilities I've got on the hat so I can put that on the Do-Rag, Cap, & Glasses and replace the abilities on the Seafoam 'Phones! So this is what I plan on running:
N-ZAP '89 outfit:
Do-Rag, Cap, & Glasses=Ink Saver (Sub), Ink Saver (Sub), Ink Saver (Sub), Ink Saver (Sub)
Retro Gamer Jersey=Sub Power Up, Sub Power Up, Sub Power Up, Sub Power Up
Crazy Arrows=Special Charge Up, Special Charge Up, Special Charge Up, Special Charge Up
S-BLAST '92 outfit:
Do-Rag, Cap, & Glasses=Ink Saver (Main), Ink Saver (Main), Ink Saver (Main), Ink Saver (Main)
Takoroka Rainbow Tie Dye=Special Power Up, Special Power Up, Special Power Up, Special Power Up
Crazy Arrows=Special Charge Up, Special Charge Up, Special Charge Up, Special Charge Up
Hydra Splatling outfit:
Five-Alarm Helmet=Run Speed Up, Run Speed Up, Run Speed Up, Run Speed Up
Hero Jacket Replica=Run Speed Up, Run Speed Up, Run Speed Up, Run Speed Up
Angry Rain Boots=Object Shredder, Ink Resistance Up, Sub Resistance Up, Quick Super Jump
I call my Hydra outfit "Fireyeb outfit" because I wanted to dress up like a firefighter! 👨‍🚒 It took a bit to learn how to use it, first starting with the Heavy Splatling to get the basics down first then used the Hydra more and more! I got some good advice from other players for how to learn it and what abilities to use for it along with some ability suggestions for the N-ZAP '89 outfit!
For the rest of the Sizzle Season update, I love that we're getting a bunch of Nintendo systems to decorate our lockers with and their names crack me up sooo much! 🤣🤣 They sound like really crusty bootleg systems! I'm def gonna redo my entire locker when I get all of them so that it looks like a gamer's locker instead of a firefighter's locker! As much as I love my firefighter themed locker, it's time for a change! I've yet to get the "Gaming" or "Gamer" titles so I'm still trying for that! But I think I've grown too fond of my "World's Best Curly Hair" that I have on my splashtag so I think I'll be keeping it for a while still!

slipknot x splatoon because i feel the need to combine my interests all the time
originally i was gonna have all 12 here but i decided to keep it as the original 9 we all know and love since i hardly even know the new members.. i would have loved to have them under here tho
so basically these guys arent really an actual team (yet) but they do have scrimages with eachother. like all the time. everyone has basically the same traits and personalities as their irl human counterparts.
i went off of vibes i get from them btw

• still pops reefslider like its splashdown
• plays in a band
#2 Paul Gray
Inkling
• midline
• average mini splat/nautilus main
• misses the zink variant from years ago (the old bubbler)
• just your basic S ranker, good but not the best
• comes up with the wackiest comp ideas
• "what if we all used weapons with splash wall as the sub... or quad big bubbler on tc"
#4 Jim/James Root
Inkling
• anchor
• heavy splatling, ballpoint
• came from greater inkopolis (is that what they call it?)
• him moving made his rank reset from S back down to B- so now hes scared to touch ranked
• "im a backline, man... what if my teammates are fucking braindead?" ion know
• new to the group so doesnt really know these guys
• got in from a tryout session
#3 Chris Fehn
Octoling

#5 Craig "133" Jones
???
• slayer
• wiper. lives and dies by the sword
• he just kinda popped up one day
• ...
• him talking is like a big foot sighting
• really good. like... super good... almost mick level
• everyone wonders what the hell he mained before splatanas were a thing
• well decorated locker. nice color theory
#6 Shawn Crahan
Octoling
• anchor but can be mid for faster comps
• explo is his babby. slosher is nice too
• 'they dont know i served in the octarian army'
• was basically the groups leader 24/7 until corey came
• his strongest feat is making strategic decisions and pop up plans for the team
• has been S+/X rank for yearsss
• probably responsible for some of the map callouts you hear today (ex. skipper pavilion, blackbelly skatepark)
• his locker has a dried squid corpse playing a miniature drum set inside
#7 Mick Thomson
Inkling
• as anchor as it gets
• "do you ever play anything other than 5k??" "...5k scope"
• frequent top 500 in tc and rm
• wants the original eliter 4k to make a comeback
• evil charger main #666
• will talk you to death about chargers and their history
• his locker just has a singular eliter in it
• "come into MY house, suck MY dick, call ME gay?!?" incarnate
#8 Corey Motherfuckibg Taylor
Inkling
• the most "splatlands born and raised 💀" guy ever
• aggro midline
• 💞flingza💞, stamper
• hates big swig it feels like a knock off flingza to him
• S rank isnt treating him well and he does care. bro is suffering
• some know him as "the great big mouth"
• no ass unfortunately
• shawn saw him in turf war once and immediately went and got him to join his team afterwards
• was found as a soggy flingza main but gradually learned to have great team spirit and become a good leader :D
• just kinda puts shit in his locker.
• joey says he has frontman energy

so does anyone actually know how unlock the pink slopsuit in salmon run?
i can only see the green and yellow ones, but i dont really wanna buy either of them because i know about the pink one. i dont have to buy one of them first to unlock other options do i?

since I'm seeing a lot of posts go around (again) here's my own little reminder:
yes, inking spawn is important (less so in ranked tbh but its still good to ink it a little. just dont waste time getting every nook and cranny)
no, you don't have to do it at the start of the match. you have 3 minutes to get it done. ink a bit as you go out each time when you respawn (because yes, you WILL die eventually, or at least your teammates will)
it's important to get to mid early if you know you're good at splatting because it allows you to establish a foothold while your teammates catch up
also keep in mind not every weapon is great for inking turf! something with more spread like an aerospray is better than a blaster or bamboozler
so if you see someone not inking base, don't get angry right away. maybe you and 2 of your teammates are inking, and they decided to go ahead cause you don't need all 4 players competing to ink the same turf. maybe they're a heavy splatling and are better suited for splatting (because yes, splatting is still important, just slightly less than inking turf)

heehoo oc time :)  gonna give a bunch of basic info about my splatoon ocs under the cut just bc i can
chroma (my in-game inkling)
-agent 4 // n-zap ‘89 main // uses too much run speed // completionist
-light blue natural ink, purple eyes
-shortest of his friends
-hyper dude, doesn’t really shut up but that’s ok
-very gay, dating shade. every day he wonders “why did this genuinely great person chose me of all people” because chroma is Big Dumb
-painted his goggles rainbow for pride month. to this day, the paint is still stuck on there

[yawns loudly]
Tumblr media
“You look well-rested. Though, I guess that’s to be expected, since you slept like ten hours straight after coming home at three in the morning.”
Tumblr media
“Ten hours are you sERIOUS?? And you didn’t think to wake me up sooner??”
Tumblr media
“Well, you looked so peaceful all sprawled out on your bed the way you were. Does that mean you had a nice win streak before you ditched Splatfest for the night?”
Tumblr media
“Oh, uh, yeah. I got put on a team that really knew what they were doing, and I left with a nice amount of wins. Would have stuck around longer, but one of them noticed I was practically falling asleep on my Heavy Splatling between matches and told me to go home...”
Tumblr media
“Are you going back today?”
Tumblr media
“Nope. I’ve had enough of this Splatfest. I’m probably just gonna go back in my room and play video games and eat junk food until I pass out.”
Tumblr media
“But... You just woke up?”
Tumblr media
“And I wanna be lazy today!”
Tumblr media
“Yeah! You tell her, Cerrin! You have a right to be lazy after a long night of Splatfest!”
Tumblr media
“...Okay then.”

Prologue 2.1: Salmon Running and You
Welp here’s the second prologue story, with guest cameo by @blueplayer2‘s OC Akio and featuring @flowingchiaki‘s OCs Hazel and Fil(bert), @patar-fuifui / @inkdazzled‘s OC Andy, and @theoneguardian‘s OC Brayden!
(Music linked in the story isn’t mine, obviously)
Not gonna lie, I’ve been wanting to work on this prologue story for a while ever since Salmon Run was revealed at last year’s E3 event with Nintendo and I had so much theory crafting going on. More or less the game mode was everything I expected it to be and more, what with the locations and special Grizz Co. weapons to play around with. But anyway I hope you enjoy “Salmon Running and You!”
*Beep beep beep beep!*
“Mmm... not now babe. A few more... minutes.”
*BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP*
“Damnit alright I’m up!”
An inkling grumpily slammed his hand down on an alarm clock next to him, causing the blaring device to go quiet. For a few moments the inkling smothered his face on his pillow in an effort to clear the sleep out of his eyes. Eventually he pulled himself off his bed and clumsily stood up and walked to his bathroom. Looking into the mirror he reached a hand to his cheeks and pulled them down, trying to get his eyes to widen.
Ugh... I knew I shouldn’t have had those drinks last night.
Despite his groggy condition he had to get himself together for his new job. He hastily brushed his beak, took a quick shower (a cold one at that), and went to the kitchen to grab a snack. He glanced to his phone and saw that he was running late to his job; a first for him.
Damn, gonna have to call a guy to get me on time.
Keeping his phone out he taps on the Sc.Uber app and scrolls down the list of drivers. Finally he spots one he knows is reliable.
“Yo how’s it going? Uh I need you to pick me up asap. Yeah I-I know it’s pretty early but I’ll pay you compensation for it. Alright, cool.”
The inkling was about to put his phone away he heard tires screeching in the distance before a sports car pulled up to his house.
“Hey,” the driver yelled as he pulled down his driver side window. “you ready to go?”
“Yeah I am!” The inkling ran down and got into the passenger side before the car revved up and sped off, leaving behind long tire marks on the street.
“Hey, thanks again for picking me up at this hour. The app showed you were the only one available and-”
“Don’t sweat it dude!” The driver bumped his client’s shoulder with a fist and clutched the gear up a notch. “Now where to my good sir?”
The passenger pointed towards Inkopolis Plaza. “That way.”
The driver nodded with a grin and pressed down on the gas, pushing the car’s engine to the max and speeding through the light traffic. The inkling sat back and looked out the window, watching various landmarks pass by like Moray Towers and Urchin Underpass. A few minutes later the car arrived at the square’s parking lot.
“Alright, here’s your stop.”
“Thanks,” The inkling took out his wallet and gave the inkling a roll of cash. “Keep the change.”
“Thanks Aeto!” The driver gave him a sincere smile and rolled up his window.
Aeto grinned back and took a bite of his snack. “See you again Akio!” He turned to the inkling social hub and started making his way in, wolfing down his food along the way. He looked around to see that the local shop vendors were just getting their doors opened up and waved to a few. He even saw Crusty Sean pulling in with his food truck.
Hmm, maybe I’ll get one of his Seanwiches during my lunch break.
A few minutes later he reached his destination: the GrizzCo. Industries building. Albeit looked more like a run-down store than a true building it was where Aeto’s latest occupation was located. He walked inside and set down the few possessions he brought with him into a locker before reaching up for his work uniform. In a moment’s notice he donned the company’s signature hat, rubber overalls, and a white jumpsuit before heading for his desk. He took out a pen and clipboard and scanned over the list on top.
Looks like we’ll be getting 3 volunteers for the morning shift.
Aeto set down the clipboard and tapped the pen on his head.
But they’re new to the business so that means I’ll have to show ‘em the ropes huh? Oh well, guess that’s why Mr. Grizz gave me that new job as trainer.
He pushed back on his chair and got up to stretch his arms over his head, feeling his back finally getting some much needed attention. He looked to his locker and pulled out a rental Splatterscope and strapped the charger over his shoulder, waiting for the volunteers to arrive.
(One hour later...)
The first of the volunteers arrived as Aeto leaned against the doorway to the building, eyeing the crowds of inklings and jellies that walked to and fro. He glanced down to his clipboard and saw three names scribbled down and tapped on each one.
They should have came in almost 15 minutes ago...
The inkling sat back down behind his desk and kicked his legs up, leaning back on a worn out folding chair as he flipped through the few papers attached to his clipboard. However he didn’t hear a pair of footsteps walking to the building until someone coughed.
“Excuse me, is this where we sign up for Salmon Running?”
Aeto hesitated for a moment before sitting upright and fixing his cap. He looked to the entrance and saw two inklings looking at him quizzically.
“Uh yes this is it,” He stood up and walked towards them before reaching out to shake their hands. “And you two are...?”
“My name’s Hazel, and this is my little brother Filbert!” The inkling girl wrapped her arm around the younger sibling, who shyly smiled back.
“Come on sis, it’s Fil!” He hissed back to her, causing the older sibling to giggle mischievously.
Aeto nodded and looked to his clipboard, seeing their named printed on the top of the recruit list. He lifted the paper up and saw two pictures of said inklings.
“Alright, please come inside and wait in the lobby while the other two show up.” He motioned with his hand for the pair to take a seat by a set of chairs. As the senior freelancer was about to head to his desk he noticed another inkling standing at the front door waiting.
“Ah, are you here for the morning Salmon Run shift as well?”
The inkling nodded, a stoic silent look stared back at Aeto as he glanced down to the clipboard.
“Brayden, correct?”
He nodded again.
“Okay, please come inside and take a seat by the other recruits.”
He nodded once more and walked in before setting his belongings under his seat. At the same time Aeto took a moment to himself to check off his list.
That’s three present. The last one to arrive is-
“E-excuse me?”
Aeto heard a soft and slightly jittery voice calling from the doorway and looked to see an octoling boy peeking in.
“Ah, hello there. Are you, by any chance, Andy?” He looked back to his list and saw the last name printed.
“Mhmm.” The octoling nodded and peeked in a little more.
“Well, welcome aboard!” Aeto reached to him with an open arm. “Glad you could make it young octo!”
At first Andy recoiled from the sudden loud burst from the senior inkling but felt himself calm down before reaching out to shake his hand.
“Thanks.”
“Now come in, the others are waiting for you to take a seat. I’ll get with you all in a minute.”
The octoling thanked him again and hurriedly found a seat a row ahead of the others before setting down his own items before sitting down. In a few minutes Aeto approached the four with a projector under his arm.
“Alright recruits! Now, Mr. Grizz has told me to show you this video tape of the basics on how we run things around here,” He then placed the device on a stool and pointed it towards a tarp on an adjacent wall. “But I thought that would be pretty boring so we’re just going to say that you watched it.” He pushed the stool aside and dragged a crate to the front of the room.
“So... what are we going to do instead then?” Hazel questioned, crossing her arms.
“Glad you asked!” He took out a crowbar and cracked open the container. The lid flew off to the side, revealing a plethora of ink-based firepower to the group. “Because I’m going to show you how to Salmon Run myself!”
All four looked into the crate and reached in to get their hands on some of the weapons inside. Brayden pulled out a Heavy Splatling, looking it over before making a nod of approval. Hazel and Fil picked out a pair of Dapple Dualies and a Splattershot respectively. And finally Andy chose an E-Liter 4K Scoped. He looked through the sights and smiled that they were just right for him.
“Now remember, these are rental weapons so don’t go losing or breaking them. I’d rather I not have to pay for damages,” Aeto joked as he grabbed a large duffel bag from his locker before slamming it shut. “Anyway just follow me to the tram and we’ll get on our way to the work area.” He watched as all of the freelancers readied their rentals and trailed behind the senior trainer through the back of the building and out a back door. There the group approached a large truck and piled in the back as Aeto took seat in the driver’s position, fired up the engines, and drove to Port Mackerel.
(A few hours later...)
“Hey, Mr. Aeto?” Andy called to the trainer. “Are we there yet?”
“We’re a few minutes from reaching the Spawning Grounds Andy. Why?” Aeto looked back from his spot on the boating wheel, the sea-worthy vessel the group was on cruising through green polluted waters.
“Oh... no reason.” He replied back as he held a hand to his mouth.
“Yeah,” Hazel grumbled to them, her face having lost some color since disembarking from Port Mackerel.
“Oie, if you’re feeling seasick take one of these.” Without looking away from his post he reached for two small paper bags and waved them to the seasick pair. Almost immediately the inkling and octoling grabbed them and hurled their breakfast into it before closing it up.
“Thanks...” The two grimaced before tossing the filled bags into a trash can.
“Just sit back down in the cabin and take it easy,” Aeto motioned to a small room behind him. “I’ll let you know when we’re there.”
The now sickly duo took his advice and found a bunk bed inside and laid down on it. Meanwhile the other two recruits were staring out at the open waters, taking in the not so graceful sights around them.
“Geez, the seas here are gross,” Fil mumbled to Brayden. “There’s piles of trash all over the place.”
“Yeah,” Aeto yelled over the sound of the boat’s motor. “The Salmonids around these parts just let their waste and junk float back up to the surface. They’re not exactly ‘eco-friendly’.”
“How come they make so much trash then?” Brayden asked out of curiosity.
“Good question but for another time,” Aeto powered down the boat’s motor to a slow drift. “We’re here freelancers.” He then knocked on the cabin door to get Andy’s attention. “C’mon, it’s time to show you how Salmon Running is done.” The octoling, feeling slightly less seasick, walked out and followed the group to the back of the boat.
“Now before we head to that big island you see over there,” He pointed behind them towards a large landmass. “There are a few things you need to know. One: the areas where we freelancers work in are surrounded by an unexplained barrier that prevents us from super jumping at will. So we have this giant satellite dish on this here vessel,” He motioned to them said device. “to temporarily break this barrier in order to send ourselves onto land.”
“So that means we can’t super jump to each other?” Fil cocked his head, a pang of worry in his eyes.
“No, but the islands we’ll be on are pretty small so super jumping is kind of redundant.”
“But what if we get in trouble?” Brayden pointed out.
“I’ll explain that later. Two: Each of you will be carrying Splat Bombs as your secondary weapons. Out of all the explosive subs we tested, Splat Bombs are the most effective when tackling the Salmonids.”
“Why not something like Burst Bombs or Auto Bombs?” Brayden
“Long story short, Mr. Grizz finds Splat Bombs to be the best,” Aeto shrugged the question off. “And three: Since this is a training run you won’t have to worry about being overrun by Salmonids. Understand?”
The group nodded in agreement.
“Great. Any more questions?”
“Uh...” Andy was about to raise his hand when Aeto clapped his together.
“Wonderful! Now everyone please stand on this platform behind me.” The senior trainer stepped forward to allow the freelancers some room to get on.
“Uh, Mr. Aeto? Are we going to have a lunch break when we’re done?” Andy tried to ask.
“Ready?” The inkling opened a panel on the satellite.
“W-wait you didn’t answer my question-”
He pressed a few buttons and reached for a lever.
“Mr. Aeto! Are we gonna have a break at all-”
He pulled the lever, which caused the dish to activate and started spinning. A moment later the group watched as the air around them momentarily wavered before it went back to normal. “Everyone, super jump to the island now!”
The four didn’t have time to ask any more questions as they all changed into their squid and octopus forms and flew away towards the isolated landmass. Aeto then reset the lever and reached for a pair of binoculars to see if they landed safely. It took him a moment to find all 4 flying towards the island before they landed on what they guessed was a landing pad. The four took a second to recover from their surprise flight and changed back to their bipedal forms.
“Ugh, my head...” Fil grumbled as he rubbed his temple.
“Ugh, my face...” Brayden groaned as he touched his nose.
“Oooh, my stomach...!” Andy held his gut before running to a trash bin and hurling once more into the container.
“...ome in freelancers! Ca... you hear me?”
All four heard a static voice coming from around them.
“Did you guys hear that?” Hazel asked as she continued glancing around. Fil and Brayden nodded while Andy recovered from his episode of illness.
“Hold on... a sec.” Another moment passed as they heard more static and inaudible chatter until they heard Aeto clearly. “There, that should do it. Can you four hear my voice clearly now?”
“Yeah, we hear you loud and clear.” Hazel replied, grabbing a Dapple Dualie in one hand.
“Excellent, it looks like you all made it in one piece.”
“...mostly.” Andy mumbled.
“You’ll be alright Andy. Now take a good look around you,” The group did as such and saw that the island around them was more than just a patch of dirt in the sea. They saw several structures built around the landing pad, such as ramps, catwalks, and walls. “You are currently at the Spawning Grounds, one of the first locations where Salmonids go to migrate and... well spawn. You will also notice next to where you all landed a square metal panel.”
“You mean this thing?” The group looked to Brayden who was standing on top of it, a raised eyebrow looking down at it suspiciously.
“Yes Brayden, that square metal panel,” A moment later the panel opened up and a large cylindrical net popped out and launched the Splatling wielder into the air, falling back on the landing pad. “Don’t stand on the egg basket please. I told you that I really don’t want to pay for damaged property of Mr. Grizz.”
“Ugh... sorry.” He stood back up while rubbing the back of his head.
“No worries, just stick together and I’ll run you all through the training exercise.” The four heard a horn blow from the boat Aeto was in. “Alright, the first thing you’ll notice is that the egg basket is empty. Look around for a big glowing fish that’s holding a big frying pan.”
They looked around but didn’t see any such creature.
“We don’t see it.” Fil said as he glanced around the area.
“You’re gonna have to look for it yourself,” The trainer sighed. “Go check around those catwalks. There should be one hiding out over there.”
The group then headed to where Aeto suggested and, sure enough they saw a large gold-scaled fish wandering around. The late morning sun glimmered off its metallic body, causing the freelancers to stare at it in an almost trance-like state.
“Oie, noobies. Don’t just stare at it. You need to take it down to collect some Golden Eggs!” Aeto radioed to them, causing the group to snap back to reality.
“Uh, sorry.” Andy blinked his eyes until he could see clearly. He then aimed his charger and lined up his sights on the Salmonid. He took a moment to breathe out before releasing the trigger and-
SPLAT!
They watched as the toga-totting fish turned into an ink splotch on the ground as well as 3 glimmering orbs.
“Woah, those must be the Golden Eggs.” Fil muttered to his sister before heading down a ramp to get them.
“Wait, Fil!” Hazel yelled to her younger sibling, racing behind him. Brayden followed suit to grab an egg of his own leaving the octoling charger to watch their back. But as he watched his new squad mates he noticed that small bubbles were forming by the edge of the island next to the eggs. He aimed to them only to see another Salmonid popping out of the water and headed right for the eggs.
“Guys! Watch out!” Andy warned as he took aim at the intruding sea creature. The others stopped dead in their tracks to see it going straight for the eggs instead of them.
“It’s trying to steal the eggs!” Brayden prepped his Splatling while the other two made a mad dash for their objective. In what they felt was a small eternity, Andy lets loose another shot from his E-Liter while Brayden unleashes a torrent of ink shots. At the same time Hazel and Fil changed into their squid forms and grabbed hold of an egg each. The two looked up to see that the overwhelming firepower did more than enough to splat the Salmonid, leaving one last egg for Brayden to simply walk up and take.
“Alright!” Fil leapt up with joy as the others cheered.
“Good job freelancers. Now get those gold goodies back to the basket and deposit them in.”
The three egg holders regrouped to Andy before heading towards the basket. As they stood by it a slot underneath the container opened up, allowing them to drop their prize in and see the eggs pop up within it.
“That wasn’t so hard.” Fil chimed as he waved his Splattershot around.
“Trust me kid, this job is a lot tougher than it seems,” Aeto radioed in. “Don’t forget that this is just a training session.”
The four drew silent for a moment before they heard their comms crackle.
“Now, what you just saw were Salmonids called a Goldie and a Snatcher. Obvious of what the big glowing fish is but the Snatcher will come ashore and try to steal any eggs you might leave out for too long. So be sure to collect as many Golden Eggs as you can.”
“Sounds like a plan!” Brayden calls to the others, his weapon in hand. The others nod with him approvingly.
“Looks like you all are ready for some more action,” they heard. “Now let’s see how you lot handle a wave of them Goldies.” A moment later a foghorn blew from the ship, followed by bubbles forming around the edges of the island. One by one the group watched as the bubbles slowly became Goldie Salmonids, leaving behind a thick, viscous green slime as they made their way inland.
“Let’s take them out!” Hazel rallied to her team as she ran down towards the beach section of the Spawning Grounds and immediately started taking on a pair of Goldies.
“Well, you heard the lady. Take out those Goldies and get those eggs in freelancers!” The others heard Aeto order through their radios. They readied their ink weapons and joined Hazel, splatting the Goldies as they showed up. For several minutes Aeto watched from the boat as the recruits worked on their egg collecting. Andy stayed on top of a high wall and provided long range support by taking out sneaky Snatchers or lone Goldies that tried to ambush the others. Brayden took it upon himself to keep himself a good distance away from the shorelines, keeping the beach inked in their color. This left Hazel and Fil to the task of luring the Goldies in closer and grabbing eggs as quickly as they could.
Not bad for a bunch of noobs. Aeto thought to himself, keeping an eye out behind them in case the Goldies attacked from a different angle. As he panned his view towards the docks section he noticed some bubbles forming by the far left pier. He was about to reach for his radio to warn the others when, instead of a Goldie coming up, he saw the all too familiar sight of a gigantic armored Salmonid with pipes protruding from its mouth that led to a launcher on top of its head.
“Freelancers look out behind you!” Aeto warned. The first to look was Andy and when his gaze fell upon the looming Salmonid closing in on him he yelped in horror and started to slowly back away. Brayden glanced back and saw the behemoth and turned his weapon to it, charging his weapon fully before blasting away. But he could only observe as his ink shots splashed harmlessly off the massive fish’s body.
“Uh, guys. What do we do?” Brayden gulped and backed up as well. Hazel and Fil stopped their egg harvesting and gazed in fear at the new Salmonid.
“S-Sis, what is that?“ Fil stuttered, almost dropping his weapon.
“Everyone! Get back from that Salmonid!” Aeto called to them. “That’s a Steelhead! Attacking its armored body won’t do a thing!”
“Then what do we do?” Andy cried out. Just as he said that the Steelhead stopped moving and began to tremble. The octoling looked up and saw that the monster fish was gurgling green spit in its mouth, causing the charger user to almost vomit a third time. But he also noticed that a plastic sac was beginning to inflate on top of the Steelhead’s face.
“Quick Andy! Splat that inflating bomb before it launches it at you!”
He reached for his E-Liter and aimed it right at the bomb. The others rushed to his aid and tried to distract the giant but to no avail, as the Salmonid filled the sac up with more slimy drool. Andy took one last moment to aim and let loose a discharge of ink and watched it pierce through the explosive. The Steelhead recoiled from the implosion and ruptured, leaving behind bits of armor and three eggs.
“You did it Andy! Well done!” Aeto sighed with relief, watching as the octoling stand up and pick up and egg.
“Thanks Mr. Aeto.” He chimed back with gratitude.
“Just call me Aeto, freelancers,” He chuckled and saw them deliver the remaining eggs left on the beach. “Good work you lot. Now head back to the launch pad and-”
He couldn’t finish talking as he saw the water around the Spawning Grounds beginning to fizzle and boil.
“What the...?” Aeto looked around and watched in utter shock as Boss Salmonids started to surface. More Steelheads began to approach along with lesser Salmonid Chums from the docks, Fly Fishes and Drizzlers popped up from the catwalk area and took positions by the far corners of the sector, and Scrappers charged their way up the beach, denying the recruits’ chances of an escape.
“W-what’s going on!” Fil quivered in his uniform as Hazel, Brayden, and Andy found themselves surrounded by very angry looking Salmonids.
“Hehehe,” One of the Steelheads approached the group with a sneering, cold-blooded grin. “Looks like the hunters have become the hunted!” The other Bosses laughed maniacally as they watched all four freelancers clump together in fear. “For too long we’ve been slaughtered for our eggs. Well,” It grabbed the nearest recruit, Brayden, by the life saver on his back and glared at him. “No longer will our people have to struggle to preserve our own kind.” The monstrous fish tossed the inkling back onto the ground and moved back with its waiting comrades. “Salmonids! Who wants a taste of some revenge?” The others roared with blood-thirsty cheers.
“Hang on you guys!” Aeto tried to reassure them as he dashed to the boat’s cabin. He reached under the bunk bed and pulled out a metal locker, grabbing hold of his own custom charger: the Splat Bolt Action. Please, just hang on a few more seconds! He rushed outside and, hastily switching on the satellite, super jumped to the landing pad on the island.
“G-guys, I’m scared!” Andy huddled close to his coworkers as the Scrappers boxed them in. The Steelheads then began to inflate their bombs, the Fly Fishes opened up their rocket pods, and the Drizzlers aimed their Ink Storm mortars. But just as the Salmonids were about to unleash their attack, Aeto landed behind them all and whistled to the fishes.
“Hey! You leave them alone you slime-sucking freak shows!” The entire island’s occupants looked towards the source of the shout and saw another inkling gazing towards the confused Salmonids. “Recruits, get down now!” They did as he told and hid in an ink puddle. Aeto aimed his charger and fired away, his shots penetrating the Steelheads’ armored plating and causing them all to get splatted. With each shot he cocked back a bolt on his charger, ejecting a glass tube, and loaded another ink cartridge before resuming his onslaught. He redirected his fire at the Scrappers and blasted them to pieces. Reloading his Bolt Action, he scoped in on the Drizzlers’ mortars and disabled them in seconds, leaving them utterly defenseless before piercing their umbrella-shaped shields and killing them instantly. Finally he saw the remaining Bosses, the Fly Fishes, realize their dire situation and attempted to flee. But the sharpshooter ran towards the now retreating Fly Fishes and annihilated the airborne assailants with swift and deadly accurate shots to the pilots. In less than 60 seconds Aeto had single-handedly wiped out the Boss Salmonids, protecting the recruits and leaving behind dozens of Golden Eggs. The senior freelancer took one more scan of the Spawning Grounds and, satisfied that no more Salmonids were present to harass them, holstered his weapon and met up with the others.
“Hey, you four alright?” He checked each of them for any injuries as they changed back into their bipedal forms.
“Y-yeah....” Andy stared at Aeto, though unsure if it was awe or fear he felt at this point.
“How... how did you take out all of those big scary Salmonids?” Fil repeatedly hopped up and down with excitement. “That was awesome!”
“Don’t worry about that, alright?” He patted the young inkling on the shoulder. “Just collect all the eggs around here and head back to the boat when you’re done. I’ll keep watch to make sure no more Salmonids show up, okay?”
They all nodded and headed off in pairs to gather the eggs. Aeto stood by the basket and kept a close eye on all of them while in deep thought.
Why did all those Salmonids attack? The training session was only suppose to have Goldies show up... In a few minutes the last of the eggs were harvested and accounted for. Aeto closed up the basket and motioned for them all to head back. But as he was about to super jump back he noticed something peaking out from the ink a few meters away. He walked up to the mysterious object and pulled it out, seeing that it was actually some sort of recording device.
What in the world is this...? He thought and examined the device over. But his train of thought was interrupted when he heard the recruits calling him through the radio to hurry up. He took one last glance around him before pocketing it in his satchel and joined the others, sailing off to Inkopolis.

Better Eight Than Never-- Chapter 42: Onomatopoeic shenanigans
“What!?” Toda yelped, springing to his feet. “What happened!?”
“I’m not sure...” Leah said, setting the phone down on the table. “I answered it, and I think was Jill, and it sounded like some--”
The phone began to ring, and swiftly he jumped up and answered it, putting it on speaker. “Jill!? Simon!?”
He was greeted with a loud smack sound, as if the phone had been dropped, then a gunshot, and then finally shouting on the other end.
"I THOUGHT YOU SAID WE GOT THEM ALL"
"I SAID WE MIGHT HAVE!!!"
Toda’s ears went back quickly. Over the phone Jill and Simon sounded so alike… “Are you okay!?”
Nobody answered him, there was simply a bunch of disembodied sounds.
Whhhiirrrrrrrr ratatatatatatatatatatat shatter "EEEP!"
*BANG* *BANG* THWAK!
"STACEY GET BACK!" Thud thud thudthudthudthud KLANG
splinter "RRRAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!"
Pphhhhhiiiiiimmmm *BOOM* CLATTERCLATTERCLATTER
That sounded like a bomb had gone off next to the phone and sent it flying, and Toda felt knots settle in the pit of his stomach.
“Can anyone hear us!?” Bato called, stepping over.
On the other end, there was a gunshot, and then silence. Toda cast a quick glance at Tanya, and the two wordlessly came to a decision. He grabbed the phone, she grabbed her gun, and together they ran out of the house and down the hall, leaving the front door to the apartment wide open behind them. They took the stairs, footsteps echoing thunderously as they sprinted downward, two steps at a time.
As they barreled into the parking lot, Toda put the phone to his ear, swallowing as he heard nothing on the other end.
But then he did hear something, the distinctive clomping of shoes, or perhaps octoling boots, on wooden flooring. He tried to be quiet but quick as he got into the car, holding the phone between his cheek and shoulder as he buckled his seat belt.
But then were was a repeated beeping sound, an explosion, and splattering sounds, blasting directly into his ear. He hurriedly turned the phone off speaker mode with a cringe. That had been painful.
“BOOYAH!” Even while the phone wasn’t against his head he heard Jill shout, there was no way that could be anyone else.
He sighed in relief and put the phone back to his head as they started off down the road, listening intently.
"-of the house. Who knows where else they could be hiding" That voice was Stacey.
"This is like, giving... off serious horror movie... vibes right... now." Said… one of the twins.
"Simon, where did Dad go?" Said, well, Jill, that must mean the last person was Simon.
Toda swallowed. “Hello? Jill? Simon? Can you hear me?”
"I saw him get splatted, he dove in front of me, I don't know if he's ok." That was Stacey again. Her voice was strained, she probably shouldn’t have gotten up to fight, but she might not have had a choice.
There was a loud THUNK, like somebody set something heavy down on the floor.
"We need to find the phone... Where did it go?" Jill said.
“HELLO!” Toda shouted, hoping it would be loud enough for them to hear him.
"Hey, I think I found it." Stacey said, and then her voice became clearer. “Hey Toda, is that you?”
He sighed in relief. “Yeah it’s me, is everyone alright?”
“In a manner of speaking.” She replied.
“Give me that.” Simon said, and then there were some unpleasant shhhpphh shhhpph shpph sounds as they did… something. “Okay, we’re here.”
“Simon! Are you alright?” Toda asked.
“Hey! You just asked me that!” Stacey huffed jokingly.
"We're... Alive." Simon said."The bullet wound I got In my shoulder earlier makes it very difficult to use a roller."
"Our house is trashed, there's ink everywhere." Jill said, sadly.
"Wait, Jill said she’d call Tanya, what’s going on?” Simon asked.
Toda took a sharp breath, glancing briefly at Tanya. “Octolings attacked Bato’s house and really messed it up.”
"Is anyone hurt?" Jill asked.
"Bato was flipped onto a table covered with broken glass." He said. "He's cut up but he'll be fine. I got a cut on my foot... but there's nothing too bad."
“Thank goodness.” Stacey said. “The last thing we need is more dead weight like me.”
“Whoa, you were far from dead weight!” Jill said. “You were like… ratatatatatatat! Veeeeeuuushhhhh platplatplatplatplatplatplatplat!”
“Please stop, I’ve got a headache.” Simon muttered.
Toda was silent a moment. “I heard that something happened to your dad?”
Simon gave a heavy sigh. “He was splatted. Hopefully he’s alright...”
“Do you guys need help?” He continued. “Tanya’s driving me over right now.”
“I think it’s a good idea.” Stacey said. “We shouldn’t have split up like that, they’ll have a much harder time taking us down if we’re unified.”
“Alright.” He agreed. “We’ll keep going. Did you drive them all back?”
"We don't know.” Simon said. “They came down from the attic. They could have been there for hours, there may even still be some up there."
“I think I heard them.” Jill said. “I heard this creaking squeaky sound, but I thought we might have bat rays in our attic!”
“That would have been cool...” Toda said. “Bat rays are awesome.”
“Agreed.” Simon said.
"Simon! You're bleeding!" Jill yelped.
“What?” They asked, then there was a short pause. "Damn, I must have been too preoccupied to notice… I'll be right back."
“Okay.” Toda said, listening to them retreat up the stairs.
“… So hey, Toda?” Jill asked.
“Yeah?”
“How can you tell me and Simon apart so good?” She asked. “There are like, hundreds of people who can’t tell us apart on the phone!”
He snorted. “Pretty sure Simon wouldn’t go ‘veeeeuuushhhh’ like that.” He glanced at Tanya as that part made her snicker.
Jill started laughing, only to be cut off by a gunshot and then a scream. “SIMON!” She screeched, and then the phone was dropped.
Toda froze, going pale. “Tanya, can you go any faster?” He asked, then cringed as he was pushed back against the seat when they accelerated. He listened close as he dared, thinking he was about to hear his friends killed.
*BANG* Another gunshot, followed by distant screams.
"EEEAAAAAAAAHHHHH!!!!"
"JILL!"
"WHY WOULD YOU SHOOT ME?!?"
Toda closed his eyes and sighed a bit, resting his head against the headrest. His hearts couldn’t take much more of this… At least Simon was alive, from the sounds of things.
"IM SORRY!"
"OWOWOWOWOW"
“Hey Toda, stay with me on the line, okay? I don’t know what’s going on.” Stacey’s voice came through rather abruptly. “I shouldn’t be walking right now, much less running upstairs.”
“Oh, yeah.” He agreed. “I’m still here. Hi.”
“Hi.” She huffed in an amused fashion. “How close are you guys?
"Right. We're just getting on the exit, hold on there.”
“Will do.” She said. “Just… hurry up, we’re in a crowded neighborhood, someone’s bound to have called the police.”
“Oh crud, we’re going as fast as we can!” He said, glancing at the speedometer, which was firmly planted around ten miles above the speed limit.
“Right, yeah, of course you are, my bad.” She apologized, then gave a rather sharp whistle. "TWINS! C'mon! Toda’s gonna be here soon!"
Tanya made another turn, and they passed a train station, which Toda recognized. “We’re getting close! Do you need us to come inside?"
As he listened he heard two sets of thundering footsteps, likely Simon and Jill running down the stairs. “I think we can start heading outside.” Stacey said. “Meet you there.”
“Yeah.” He agreed. It sounded sort of like the end of the conversation, but he decided he wasn’t going to hang up until they got there. After all, Stacey had sounded a bit… scared? Nervous? Ill at ease for sure.
He stayed on the line, even though they didn’t talk anymore. He listened to the sounds of shoes being put on, weapons being checked, and most worryingly, some grunts of pain. But soon enough they pulled up in front of the Grace’s house, just in time to see Jill sprinting down the front steps with Stacey’s splatling in her arms. “Pop the trunk!” She called.
Tanya looked up, then nodded and followed her instruction. She kept the car in drive, ready for a quick gettaway.
Toda set the phone down in a cupholder and got out of the car, opening the back door, and then running over to the house, where Simon was helping Stacey down the front steps. “Need help?”
“Yeah.” Simon said. “Take my roller, put it in the back.”
He nodded and grabbed the roller from them before dashing back to the car. He placed the roller inside, slammed the trunk closed, then got back into the passenger seat, glancing over his shoulder as Stacey climbed into the back seat with Simon right in tow.
“Hey mom figure, we’re ready.” Stacey said, fumbling with her seatbelt.
“You must be Stacey, I’m Tanya.” She greeted, then hit the gas.
“Pleasure.” Stacey said. “Don’t speed, look like you were just passing by, just in case we pass the cops.”
“Oh, yeah.” She agreed, letting the car slow slightly. “Are you all okay?”
“Well, I was until Simon shot me in the foot!” Jill said.
“It was an accident!” They protested.
“What happened up there?” Stacey asked.
“An octoling was hiding in the bathtub, and attacked me when I came in. I was able to splat them before they could hurt me, but I grabbed their pistol and… was probably too on edge, because I shot Jill when she came in… I’m so sorry.” They apologized.
“Yeah, it just hurts… a lot...” Jill said. “Tanya, do you have more bandages at your house? Simon wasn’t sure what they were doing when they tried to patch me up.”
"Yes, we do." Tanya nodded, glancing at her briefly. "I'll take a look at it when we get back."
“Thank you.” She said.
Just then two cop cars whipped past them, and Toda gave a low whistle. “Looks like we got out just in time...”
“We all did good.” Stacey said. “Can I pass out now?”
“Yeah, we’ll wake you up when we get there.” Jill said.
Tanya cast a brief glance at Toda. “Toda, hon, can you call Leah put it on speaker? I left my bluetooth at home.”
“Can do.” He replied as he picked the phone back up.
Jill blinked. "Oh man, do they know we're ok?" She asked.
"Ah... well, Toda and I ran out as soon as we heard gunshots, so likely not.” Tanya admitted.
“Well, that’s not good...” Simon grimaced.
“Here we go." Toda said, hitting the speaker button on the phone as the call started to go through and held it a bit closer to Tanya.
Leah picked up on the first ring, "Well? Are they all okay?"
"Yup, the kids are alive, and we're on our way back now." Tanya said.
"Hey Leah!" Jill called.
"Oh thank Judd." She sighed with relief, then her voice became a bit muffled, she had probably covered one end of the phone while she relayed the news to the others. "Hachi wants to know if they got the masks from the soldiers?"
Tanya glanced briefly in the rear view mirror, "I don't think they did..." She replied. "And we can't go back and get one, the police got to the house right as we were leaving… That might be another problem..."
"Right..." Leah replied. "Just get back as fast as you can."
Tanya laughed. "That’s not going to be a problem.”
Leah laughed as well. "Okay. Love you."
"Love you too."
The phone call ended, and the rest of the trip was done in silence. It wasn’t awkward, or from fear, simply brought on by exhaustion. However as they pulled into the parking lot and began to get out of the car, it was like a seal was broken, and Jill spoke up. “Hey Simon?”
"What?" They asked absently.
"You're going to need to improve your aim if you really want to knock my socks off." She replied with a grin.
Simon replied with only a groan.
Toda snorted and got out of the car, holding the back door open for Stacey.
“I don't think the weapon you used suits you either--" Jill continued. "--Toe be honest.”
"Oh Judd why." Simon groaned. “Please stop.”
"Have you no sole? Look at me when I'm talking to you Simon!" Jill laughed.
"Well, hopefully it won't take too long for you to heel up." Tanya laughed as she pulled Stacey’s splatling out of the trunk.
Jill laughed, grinning a little. "What a way to kick off the week."
“Please, please no more.” Simon said as they rubbed their temples. “I’m dying inside.”
"Well, I put my best foot forward." Jill said, which while it got Tanya to laugh, made Simon groan in agony.
Toda smiled, and helped to support Stacey when she reached an arm out to him. “How you feeling?” He asked.
“I just had one of those naps were you feel ten times worse afterward...” She groaned. “So not good.”
“You can all sleep once we get upstairs.” Tanya reassured.
“Sweet...” Stacey murmured. “Which one of you guys has my Cpod?"
Toda frowned a bit as they began to walk toward the building. "Hachi still had it when we got back home that day, so it would probably be Bato."
"That's where we're headed now, right?" She asked
"Yeah." Simon replied.
She sighed in relief. "Good, I could use my tunes right about now..."
As they walked across the lobby, they drifted once more into silence, carefully casting glances around, as if expecting an octoling to jump out of a potted plant. However they made it onto the elevator rather uneventfully, and hit the button for the 5th floor.
"Did they get into your house too?" Simon quietly asked Toda once the doors closed.
Toda shook his head. "No, they didn't. We heard the gunshots and someone screaming from the floor below and we ran down to see what was going on."
“Thank Judd, they might not know where you are then, but I wouldn’t hold my breath if I were you.” Stacey grunted, carefully taking steps forward as the elevator doors opened.
“It’s still reassuring.” Jill said.
Tanya nodded in agreement. "That it is." They reached the apartment, and she set Stacey’s splatling down long enough to open the door, stepping to the side to let the kids go in ahead of her. "We're back!"
The floor in the hallway looked a little better than it had when they left, there wasn't a thick layer of ink over the top of the carpet anymore. If it didn't still look somewhat wet, it might've passed as a psychedelic carpet pattern. This illusion was ruined as soon as Toda stepped into the house, his foot sinking slightly into the still damp carpet. At least now it was more like a shallow mud pit than anything else.
*schlorp schlorp*
The sounds of two sets of feet came from the living room, and a moment after Leah and Anita came into the entryway. "Thank Judd." Leah sighed as she caught sight of them.
“Toda!” Anita exclaimed, stepping forward and trying to hug him. “Don’t just run off like that!”
“Sorry mom...” He said. “Um… this is Stacey, Stacey, this is my mom Anita.”
Anita blinked and stepped back, looking her up and down. “It’s nice to meet you.”
“Yeah.” She agreed. “Can I have some help getting to somewhere I can crash?”
“Of course.” Leah said, stepping forward and taking her weight before helping her to the living room.
“Whew...” Toda sighed and rolled his shoulders, then glanced at his mother… and found she was staring at Simon. Oh no.
“So… are you the Grace twins?” Anita asked, clasping her hands tightly together.
"Yep~, I'm Jill, this is Simon." Jill said, holding out a hand to shake.
Anita took Jill's hand, nodding a bit. "It's nice to finally meet you, Jill and... Simon." She said, with a small hint of distaste.
Simon's eyes narrowed. "Is... there something wrong?" They asked, their tone hardening defensively.
Anita met their gaze coolly, her own tone was calm, but the judgmental hints to them were undeniable, "I simply assumed, when I learned your name before, that you--"
They raised a hand, intense anger in their expression. “I know what you’re going to say, I’ve heard it a hundred times before. I’m on around five hours of sleep, and I just had to not just splat, but kill intruders who broke into my house and might have killed my dad, so pardon me if I’m not in the mood for your fucking bigotry right now.” They snapped, then turned and began to walk down the hall.
“… Aaannnddd that’s my sibling!” Jill exclaimed. “I’ll be right back.” And with that, she turned and jogged after them.
Toda sighed in relief as the situation greatly deescalated, but he still felt anxiety building up from the pit of his stomach, like they’d only just avoided some sort of disaster.
Anita sighed. “Well young man, we should be getting home.”
“I’d… rather stay here.” He said quickly. “I want to be here in case they come back.”
She paused, then sighed. “Alright but… be careful, okay?”
“I will.” He agreed, then turned and went down the hall, turning the corner to find Simon and Jill bundled up at the end. “… Hey.” He said quietly.
They looked up sharply, and then wiped their eyes. “Hey.”
“Is… it okay if I talk to you alone?” He asked.
“Um… yeah, sure.” They said, then glanced at Jill.
“I’ll… go to the living room to hang out with Bato, or something.” She said. “Don’t worry about me!” She gave Simon a hug, then stood up and went back down the hall.
When the shlorp of her footsteps grew distant, Toda sat down near Simon. “… I’m sorry… "I'm sorry I didn't tell you before we got here. And I'm sorry she's like that to begin with."
"Yeah, a little warning would have been nice." They muttered. “I managed to get out of it okay though… I had to resist the urge to splat her.”
“I don’t blame you.” He said quietly.
They swallowed, then continued. "I shot Jill, and.. and I almost splatted you earlier! You... You've been in my head, you've seen how I react violently."
He looked up sharply. "Simon, that was different." You had every right to try to defend yourself, to get me out of your head. I don't fault you for that, I... if the situation was reversed and I didn't recognize you, I probably would have done the same."
They took a sharp breath, then began to cry, pressing their face into their knees. “I hurt everyone.”
"... Simon..." He murmured, holding out his hand. "No, you didn't, you don't…" He took a deep breath, and let it out before continuing. “It’s… okay to defend yourself. I’m so glad you walked away.”
They glanced up, and then ever so slowly took his hand.
"I wish I-I knew how to help you, but I..." He cringed a little, how did Bato make this look so easy?
"...  That shouldn't be your responsibility." They muttered.
It was a moment before Toda answered. "I want to... if there's something I can do to help, then I want to help. Well, I want to help even if there isn't anything I can do, but... you know what I mean."
They stayed quiet for a long moment. “You don’t want me to apologize to your mom, do you?”
“Absolutely not.” He said almost immediately.
“Glad we agree...” They murmured, then tightened their grip. “… Thanks for checking on me.”
“Yeah, of course.” He said. “My mom went home, we can go check on Bato if you want, ask if we can sleep on his floor.”
"Good plan." They said, then began to stand up, wiping their eyes with their free hand. “Hopefully I’ll be able to sleep.”
“Same.” He agreed, slowly starting to plod his way back down the hall, still firmly holding their hand. “Judd, this carpet." He muttered.  “It sounds like someone put whoopie cushions under there.”
Simon snorted, then bit back chuckles.
*fffpphh-shluck fffffttt-shluck phhhfttt-shluck fffppphhhhshluck!*
They burst out laughing, taking a second to lean on the wall. “Dear Judd, it does!” They agreed, wiping another tear from their eye.
He started to laugh as well, stomping his feet to make more noise.
“Toda, you’re going to ruin your socks!” They laughed.
“They’re already ruined!” He said with a grin. “Why stop now?”
They snorted, shaking their head.
“Heeeeyyyy! What are you guys doing?” Jill called from the dining room.
“Laughing at fart noises.” Toda said, casting a brief glance at Simon before beginning to walk again.
“This carpet is the best.” Jill laughed.
They entered the dining room just as Tanya was finishing patching up Jill’s foot. “Now, no more of you kids hurt your feet, okay? They’re important.”
“I’ll see what I can do.” Jill laughed, stretching a little. “Thank you~”
“I’d say ‘any time’, but I want to encourage you kids to be more careful.” Tanya replied, standing up and brushing some ink off her legs.
“Hey, what’s that?” Simon asked, gesturing at the ink tank on the table, and at Oz inside. He was sort of turning around and around in circles, in a bored sort of fashion. The only thing keeping the tank upright during this was the fact that Hachi had fallen asleep at the table with her arms hooked around it.
“Hm?” Bato said, lifting his head; He’d been drifting off as well. "It's the elite that led the attack here."
"Oswald." Toda added, "The one from the Underpass."
Simon's eyes narrowed. "And... why is he on your table?"
Leah sighed. “ Well, to make an awfully long story short, we fought him down, got the mask off of his head, and we stuck him in there."
“But why?” Simon asked.
“… It’s complicated.” She murmured.
"It’ll be fine, just as long as he doesn't try to roll away or anything." Toda muttered, watching the tank carefully.
"Through all of that mess?" Tanya pointed out, nodding towards the inky living room.
"I don't think he can open the door like that..." Jill added.
"... Yeah, you're right." He said.
"... Am I still needed?" Jill asked. "Can I go back to sleep?"
"No, that's fine, you can sleep..." Leah said, then glanced around with a small frown. "Ah... right, the couch is still mostly covered in ink..."
"My bed's open." Bato mumbled, still half asleep. "And there's the sleeping bag in there too."
"... Bato, honey, are you sure you shouldn't be in your bed?" Leah pressed.
"... That requires moving."
Toda snorted at that, smiling wearily.
“Well, good night...” Jill murmured, getting up and beginning to walk toward the hall, when she stopped and spun around. "WAIT! IIIIII just realized a shocking realization!"
"Oh no." Simon said. “Go to bed.”
"I can't call him 4-man anymore!" She said, pointing at Oz.
"Didn't we agree on Yon?" Toda asked.
"Well I didn't!" Jill protested. "But now he needs another nickname! Wait wait wait, I got a great idea... WALDO."
"Jill no, we're not playing where's Waldo." Simon rolled their eyes.
Toda laughed a bit. "I think he's already got 'Oz' as a nickname, Jill." He pointed out.
Leah chuckled. "Toda, dear, maybe you should follow Jill to Bato's room, it sounds like you need some more sleep too; the second sleeping bag's in the closet."
Toda yawned. "Yes ma'am. You ready for bed too, Simon?”
“Very.” They replied, giving a big yawn.
"Good sleeeeepppp~" Jill said, then began to lead, slogging down the hallway. "So B's room is where?"
"It's that one at the end there." Toda said, pointing.
"Oooohhhh." She started walking toward it again. "Hopefully you understood that I want to go to Bato's room and you aren't taking me to a room of bees."
Toda chuckled a bit, "I understood, don't worry."
“I’m too tired for this...” Simon muttered.
"I want bed!" Jill exclaimed, limping into the room and shaking off her feet a bit and then jumping into Bato's bed. It looked like she fell asleep almost as soon as she landed there.
"All yours." Toda chuckled, then turned and grabbed another sleeping bag from the closet. “You want this one?”
“I’m just fine using this one that’s already out.” Simon replied, settling down on the floor.
He smiled and shook out the sleeping bag, settling down beside them. “Good night...”
“Night.”
