Ebisu lists these eight principles off to Naruto and Konohamaru in Chapter 2, and they seem to be in direct parallel with the Five Constants and Four Virtues. My knowledge of Confucian ethics is passing at best, so my interpretation of it may be different than another person's reading. But I find it very interesting which of these are followed by the characters, and which aren't.

Kakashi explains why he stays helping Tazuna in Chapter 21 with the words, "To know what is right and choose to ignore it is the act of a coward. Like Master, Like Man [...] True shinobi do not merely dance to the tune of whoever pays the Piper." In that quote alone, Kakashi seems to be upholding wisdom (knowing that's right), justice (doing the good) and virtue (doing something for others' sake rather than for self-gain).

However, on the other hand we see Kakashi disregard filial piety (shame towards his father as a child, refusing to abide by hierarchy with friends and colleagues, both when he is a shinobi under the Hokage and when he is the Hokage himself), loyalty with a ruler (in placing Naruto's plea for Sasuke's life above the village/the Hokage), and prudence (in not moderating his chakra usage in battle, in risky experiments like having Naruto aim a rasenshuriken at him). So, while he is sometimes described as a model shinobi, what's most interesting to me are which principles Kakashi chooses not to follow.

It's a bit of an open question what dying entails for a creature consisting of consciousness imprinted on the life-energy that is chakra, but I'd say what he went through probably counts. I mean, he took the life-energy that he's literally made up of, smashed it into Naruto's life-energy hard enough to perform spirit-particle-physics, and used the new and exciting types of chakra this pseudo-quantum annihilation of their life-energy spat out to power some (admittedly pretty devastating) fisticuffs. It's literally called 'Baryon Mode,' as in it's named after a type of subatomic particle, like the type you would get smashing atoms together in particle accelerators in our world.

That must have produced some really interesting types of chakra, huh? Especially since the technique was still a bit rough, what with it being the first time Kurama was actually using the technique as opposed to just theorizing how it would work. It must have been like some of the first nuclear fission and fusion prototype experiments, where you don't know all the things you have to look out for yet so you just kinda wing it, but also use every safety protocol you can think of. Except they were pulling this out in the middle of a life-or-death fight so strike the safety protocols. That type of winging it must have produced some wild kinds of life-energy-particle byproducts, maybe even some life-energy-anti-particles...

Anyway, back from that tangent to what I was talking about. Kurama knowingly paid his own life- literally smashed the substance of his being into exotic high-energy spirit-particle soup, one piece of himself at a time, to provide fuel- sustaining total focus throughout the entirety of what must have been an extremely painful and emotional process through his absolute will to help protect his friend and their village. Except this place looks less like a ninja village and more like a lab. It's not like any of the labs he's seen on infiltrate-and-decommission missions with Naruto either. The tech is all wrong! Some of it is way too advanced, other tools and techniques which he knows are absolutely basic standards (like seals for example) are missing entirely, and everything is absolutely saturated with anti-chakra to the point where he almost can't feel the difference from the world literally made of the stuff he just left! Something is deeply off about this place, it's like a whole different world from the one he died in.

They're obviously in the kid's village after all, judging by all the buildings around when he phases through the roof with the kid hot on his tails, and Kurama has learned to admire the kind of spunk that it takes to so immediately put oneself in between a threat and its target. He's even all tied up with Clones for sage's sake!

It's like looking at a younger Naruto in far too many ways for him to just dismiss.

Kurama can't believe he somehow stumbled into another one! He also can't admit to himself that he's already decided to take the boy under his wing and pass on all those lessons he picked up by watching Naruto successfully lead a village for over a decade. Not that never admitting it will stop him from doing so, he'll just insist that it's for purely selfish reasons the entire time. Yeah! He's just getting the kid to trust him so he can eventually pump him for information on who's in charge and who can help him get back to his home dimension for a visit.

Question Stuff

1. What was the most surprising thing about writing in 2024?

Well, now that I'm looking at the statistics page, it's gotta be how well-liked In Progress is? I don't know, I don't usually look at kudos or anything (except to admire it if it's a palindrome!) so I didn't really realise... It's a 5K word one-shot Bleach fic that's basically time travel trope puree, because I skimmed most of the time travel tag and wanted to write something short and fun. I'm glad people seem to have liked it but I'm a little surprised.

2. What was the most enjoyable to write?

Probably Sweat Equity. Sweat Equity happened because an anon sent me a prompt and it was a banger. I wrote it in one sitting while I was in Bologna, sitting in a park beneath a tree that was almost certainly older than my whole city. It was nice.

3. Which fic is the most underrated?

Nailed It. Listen, I am not complaining. I understand why other people didn't love it like I did: it's high context and a stupid pairing, and I reckon MANY of the people who got a notification —for a Deidara/Madara fic that was already a spin off of some other unfinished soulmate AU fic! — were like "Ummm, what the fuck, Tozette, I'll pass."

I see you, you are so right, and that is a valid choice.

But also, I raise you: every character in that fic is terrible and it made me laugh.

4. Which fic(s) had something "cut" or an idea that never happened?

This bleach fic, which I may yet manage to clean up and archive for a little one shot eventually.

It never got off the ground because of fundamental incompatibility issues. Irreconcilable differences are grounds for divorce, etc etc. Can't be helped.

5. Which fic(s) did you want to write but didn't get around to?

I would have liked to have finished Where The Heart Is before I started writing like 5 different Bleach fics all at once, actually.

6. Any WIPs that never got published?

Goodness me, yes. Three Hidan/Kakuzu (Naruto) fics, a long form Ishida/Szayel (Bleach) fic, a new fic in my Murakami Madeline series (Naruto — that's Where The Heart Is), an Urahara/Ichigo/Urahara (Bleach) fic, an Akatsuki Time Travel Ensemble (Naruto) fic...

Here's something from my draft of Where The Heart Is:

"Your friend won't look me in the face, senpai," complained Tobi. "Isn't that too suspicious?" Maddie managed not to twitch but it was a near thing. She had absolutely no desire to look Uchiha Obito right in his sharingan eye. "It would be suspicious if she wanted to look at you!" Deidara snapped. Dramatically, he turned away from Tobi. "Stop following me everywhere! Hm!" "We're partners, though," Tobi responded, totally unconcerned by the honestly staggering amount of disdain Deidara could cram into one sentence. "Senpai, don't you want to spend time with me?" Tobi teetered forward and around so he could angle his bright orange mask up at Deidara's face. A shard of ceramic scraped on the stone floor underfoot. "Eh?" He looked down and spotted the broken pieces of Maddie's ugly ex-teapot. "Ah! Senpai, is it yours?" "Is it—?" Deidara's face contorted. "What are you trying to say?" Worse, his volatile chakra also contorted into a flicker of intense killing intent. Maddie's hearts kicked into their highest gear.

8. Which fic was the one you were most excited to write?

Hmm. Interesting to have this as a question distinct from which was most enjoyable to write. Excitement...

Maybe Deadbeat?

Deadbeat was one of those fics that kind of happened to me while I was reading a lot of OC romance fics I didn't like very much and thinking about how I could write a Kakuzu one that I liked instead. Since it's not a romance you can only imagine how well that went! But I ended up liking it a lot better and writing all of it over a weekend in a scrambling little frenzy.

9. Fic hopes for the New Year?

I've got some WIPs to work on. I'd like to get Where The Heart Is (Naruto, Murakami Madeline (OC) fic), Plan C (Bleach, time travel, IchiIshi) and Open Season (Bleach, Grimmichi) posted.

Ideally, I would also like to hopefully get the other two Bleach fics drafted at least — the Urahara/Ichigo/Urahara one with the time travel and the romantic parasitism and the Ishida/Szayel one.

I hope my tolerance for the fandom lasts long enough to see me through, lol. We'll see!

South Park Filler Guide - Season 2

I find the existence of filler guides quite amusing, since for some shows it makes sense (like Naruto), but for others (like Pokemon) it absolutely doesn't and they still exist. So here is an attempt to do an absolutely unnecessary one just for fun. 😅

The classifications are CANON (an episode with major storylines present), LORE (in which we get significant backstory or world building, but could be skippable)  and FILLER (completely skippable episodic storytelling, not connected to overarching story arcs)

PLS my analysis will have spoilers, if you're a first time viewer, just scroll to the bottom and read the list and only read full text if you are familiar with the content of the show already!

S2E1 Terrance and Phillip in Not Without My Anus is FILLER

This is the definition of filler, and not even a good filler, but the one that drags. The whole episode is a waste of time, and a horrible season opener if you ask me. I don't even care if Saddam Hussein dies in this one, skip it anyway, all you need to know for his next appearance is that he is already dead, which will be obvious and TBH since the movie gives a different story about his death, this one might as well take place in an alternate continuity. S2E2 Cartman's Mom is Still a Dirty Slut is CANON

We're back with the conclusion of the season 1 mystery. For now. S2E3 Ike's Wee Wee is CANON

Kyle learns the secret of his brother and he also gets a great deal of character development that makes this episode a must-watch. S2E4 Chickenlover is FILLER

A great character episode for Officer Barbrady, nontheless a filler half hour of the show. S2E5 Conjoined Fetus Lady is FILLER

One might enjoy this one for Pip. Or for Nurse Gollum. But not for its long-lasting consequences, that one is for sure. S2E6 The Mexican Staring Frog of Southern Sri Lanka is LORE

This one is debatable, and the one that I would think most people would actually debate on, since most of it is a one off story, however there is a single scene at the end with Satan and Saddam, which acts as foreshadowing for the movie, so that one scene provides context, however the movie is enjoyable without this little introduction. S2E7 City on the Edge of Forever (Flashbacks) is FILLER

Again, you can't make more specific filler content than a whole episode that is just a dream. Stan dreams that Eric dreams that Ms. Crabtree falls in love. S2E8 Summer Sucks is FILLER

I was thinking about the Mr. Twig storyline. It does build up Herbert's identity as a gay man. However looking at it, this doesn't seem like manga original content, rather, this hits every usual beat of an anime-exclusive filler arc. Edit: I know South Park is not based on a manga, it's an elaborate joke. S2E9 Chef's Chocolate Salty Balls is FILLER

Anything that gets brought up later from this episode is counted as filler content, so in the long run it doesn't matter. S2E10 Chickenpox is FILLER

Stuart and Gerald get some backstory, but otherwise the whole story is a one-off. S2E11 Roger Ebert Should Lay off the Fatty Foods is FILLER

I believe this one was expected. Nothing in this episode matters by the next. S2E12 Clubhouses is FILLER

Randy and Sharon divorce. They get back together by the end. Bebe likes Kyle. She doesn't by the end of the episode. Typical filler stuff. S2E13 Cow Days is FILLER

The Terrance and Phillip dolls never appear again. Neither does Eric believing himself to be a Vietnamese prostitute called Ming Lee have any consequences. S2E14 Chef Aid is FILLER

Herbert Garrison's filler arc with Mr. Twig comes to an end. Chef sleeps with a lot of women. End of episode. S2E15 Spookyfish is FILLER

I love this episode, but Sharon being crazy and all the paralell universe stuff are solely for this one. S2E16 Merry Christmas Charlie Manson! is FILLER

Eric now has a bunch of family members, none of which we ever see again. S2E17 Gnomes is CANON

It may come as a surprise after such a long string of fillers, but since the gnomes return and Tweek becomes a major player later, it only makes sense for this episode to be seen as fairly plot-heavy. S2E18 Prehistoric Ice Man is FILLER

Stan and Kyle get into a fight and then make up. The iceman never returns.

About You

When did you start writing?

I remember writing a story for a first grade assignment when I was 4-5 and really enjoying it. They gave us little booklets that were just like construction paper cut into shapes with lined paper inside to write on. I didn't really start writing as a hobby until I was about 10, writing naruto fanfic.

Are the genres/themes you enjoy reading different from the ones you write?

I tend to write what I like to read! I like nonfiction on occasion which I definitely can write, I just don't do it very often.

Is there an author (or just a fellow writer!) you want to emulate, or one to whom you’re often compared?

No one has ever compared me to an author ever, lmfao, but there are some writers here on writeblr that I've got an eye on, with prose that fucking slaps. I haven't actually sat down and read their stuff yet for the most part, because my life has been crazy but from the excerpts I see on tumblr I'm like. Yes. That. That's great. How do they do that. shout out to @cowboybrunch, @fortunatetragedy and @davycoquette!

Can you tell me a little about your writing space(s)?

90% of the time I write in my messy ass bed my fitted sheet refuses to stay on. The other 10% I'm wandering to other places in the house.

What’s your most effective way to muster up some muse?

Write or die sometimes brute forces it out of me. Otherwise, brainstorming with a sounding board, answering some asks or tag games, or rereading my old stuff can all help me out here.

Did the place(s) you grew up in influence the people and places you write about?

I mean. Probably! I definitely do that thing where I'll picture the layout of a building as a building I'm familiar with. I've written a lot of apartments that look suspiciously like my grandparent's old house.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing, and if so, do they surprise you at all?

Yeah almost definitely lmfao. I keep noticing patterns after the fact. I have been circling the idea of dead worlds for one, and what it takes to survive there a couple times now. It's less obvious in project Cannibalism, but it's honestly still there.

Your Characters

Would you please tell me about your current favorite character? (Current WIP, past WIP, never used, etc.)

My current obsession is definitely Ravi, who is a dnd character, a larp character, and the main character of my Summer League OCT rounds. They started off as a gnome alchemist who is like just a back alley drug dealer when they got stuck in Barovia in a Curse of Strahd campaign. (Currently the only member of the original party still alive and aiming to keep it that way) I changed them to be a halfling when writing them for the OCT on a whim because it feels like a more grounded fantasy race to draw from without having to explain too much thanks to Lord of the Rings and its enduring cultural legacy. I've been greatly enjoying the process of writing, essentially, an incredibly traumatized character embark on a life or death venture among people who have no idea what the stakes are for them, exploring how badly adapted some of those defense mechanisms are for a regular ass place and how other people would view them, and how they would get there in the first place. I'd put them in my mouth and chew on them

Which of your characters would you be friends with in real life?

I can be a pretty sensitive person who prefers straightforward communication and positivity, so every single one of my horrible little prickly assholes is out. And that's a category I really enjoy writing so that's almost all of them lmfaoooo. I'd probably be friends with Wakma though. Wakma's cool.

Which characters would you dislike the most if you met them?

I wouldn't be able to stand Mala. She's consistently unpleasant and horrible to the people around her and I would not be able to let it roll off or just hit back like Rakani does.

Tell me about the process of coming up with your characters?

I like to develop characters in response to aspects I find interesting about the worldbuilding, or around a concept I want to explore. Sometimes they come about because there's a role in a story I need to fill. Wakma, for example, mostly came about because I knew Rakani absolutely needed a friend who didn't come from the Suyan hierarchy, and I already had this really cool idea about nomadic airship traders so I made him a diplomat from that culture, and then developed more of his character as I wrote him and decided what was important to the story.

Do you notice any reoccurring themes/traits in your characters?

Traumatized little goblins, people who aren't acceptable victims, who lash out and behave in unacceptable ways.

How do you picture your characters?

I do draw, so I do have pictures of what characters look like sometimes, but sometimes they're just blobs and I decide along the way what they look like. I do try to be deliberate about it though, because diversity in race and body types rarely just happens to me. It's something I work towards and am purposefully deliberate about.

What’s your reason for writing?

I wanna and no one's stopped me yet.

Is there a specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating coming from your readers?

i love it when someone points at something I did specifically about what about it they vibed with or excited them.

How do you want to be thought of by those who read your work?

Just don't look at me and expect my characters please.

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?

Clarity.

What have you been frequently told your greatest writing strength is by others?

Well I think people have cried about my writing a lot, so it's quite emotional. I'm always very pleased when someone says I've hit on a level of some emotional realism.

How do you feel about your own writing?

I have great, creative ideas, but the execution could use a little work. I think my writing is pretty plain and worksmanlike, and that's like fine.

If you were the last person on earth and knew your writing would never be read by another human, would you still write?

This does absolutely open up a whole ass can of worms. jamie's right, how am i surviving here, if im subsidence farming I don't think I'd have the time and energy for writing. But like, I don't think I would if I knew I'd never have an audience. Even a small audience of one would be reason enough to write but if it's just me I might not.

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely what you enjoy?

I don't care what other people want when I'm writing. I only care when I'm editing lmfao.

Naruto seems like he would enjoy working at a big and popular national park like Yosemite. Like you can kind of fuck off and do whatever you want depending on your job and be rude to tourists who are deserving of it. He comes to the valley for a summer season and is excited to hike and climb and stuff and he ends up working with Tenten at a bike rental. Tenten thinks he’s a little slow and annoying at first but he seems really sincere and kind, and very passionate about climbing.

She invites him bouldering (scaling large rocks, not walls) with her and Lee and when Naruto sees Lee flashing v7s (more advanced level of climbing) while Naruto can barely mount a v3 (more beginner/intermediate climbing), Naruto decides for Lee that they have to train together from now on so Lee can teach him all his skills and introduce him to this Mighty Guy person that apparently has been in the valley for over a decade& Lee is always glazing. One day Gai is leading them up Sunnyside Bench (beginner climb that takes you to the top of the Yosemite falls, really sick views and you can swim in the falls pools above the tourists looking up taking pictures) and suddenly Gai stops them and is like “wait we have to let Uchiha pass” and Naruto is like “who?” so they all stop and Naruto looks down and he sees this toned tan shirtless twunk seamlessly catching up to them but what completely throws Naruto is that he has zero safety gear. No harness, no nuts, no rope, just 2 carabiners in his belt loops, a chalk bag around his waist, and a small backpack, but that’s not stopping him from ascending so quickly and effortlessly that you’d think he was climbing up into a tree house and not suspended thousands of feet in the air with death being the only possible consequence if he falls. Naruto immediately starts running his mouth like “What the fuck. How is he doing that he’s not clipped into anything! Hey, don’t you know you could fall and die!?” And as Sasuke passes, Tenten, Lee, and Gai try to say hi and Sasuke completely ignores Naruto and grunts some kind of hello in response to everyone’s greeting as he almost silently overtakes them and then disappears overhead. Naruto is still !!??? “What an asshole why’d he just crawl on by without acknowledging everyone” And Tenten goes “You’ve never heard about free-soloing? It’s extremely dangerous, but it is a tradition. People go up on the walls and cracks with nothing but their hands. That’s Sasuke Uchiha, last summer his brother became the first person to ever free solo El Capitan (sorry Alex Honnold). Ever since then Sasuke has been training to solo El Cap and beat his brother’s time. Every morning this summer he’s free solo’d Sunnyside Bench, taken a swim, and then he jogs the hike down. It’s his warm-up.” And Naruto is like “PEOPLE CLIMB WITH NO GEAR!? SOMEONE CLIMBED EL CAP WITHOUT ANY SAFETY GEAR!?” and his broke orphan self who can barely afford climbing gear suddenly is like wait this is actually perfect why didn’t anyone else tell me this style of climbing sooner. Team 3 is like u don’t get it, if you slip, you die. And Naruto is like okay well then I won’t slip. And if you guys won’t teach me I’ll find this Sasuke guy and have him teach me! And Neji scoffs “good luck with that. He always climbs alone and he’s not really social.” (This is particularly odd in Yosemite as climbing is normally considered a social sport and easiest to improve by climbing with others) But Naruto can’t get the image of Sasuke’s muscular body effortlessly getting up the wall out his head. The precision of every leg movement, the efficiency of every hand placement, the focus and determination in his eyes that made Naruto wonder if Sasuke had even been aware of him as he flew past. Naruto must learn to climb like that, and he will figure out a way to make Sasuke teach him.

I'm so sorry, I have no idea what a mun-name is but thank you anyways 😅. Also sorry it's taken so long, I was trying to do the Make a Wish prompts, which I've finally gotten mostly bullet pointed out. Lucky thing because I all but finished one of the last two and then lost it due to my own stupidity... so I've been sadly trying to rewrite it /sigh. I decided to finally shake free those ideas in the mean time, since I haven't posted any writing in a while

Yamato (Tenzo, but this name is for private use)

Because he was raised in Root, he mostly emotes via micro expressions so his Alpha has learned to be really good at reading those looks. His Alpha can literally stare at his face for hours while they talk. Yamato stares right back. Please ask for a booth if you go to a restaurant with him. Everyone thinks you're making bedroom eyes at each other when you're figuring out your next week's meal prep. Actual bedroom eyes are near lethal levels.

He's a pretty tall guy so when you first started spending time at his place, all the cups and plates and things are also really high up. He barely used any of his lower cupboards. When you first move in together, he asks you where all of your stuff is and you think he's joking until you realize he genuinely doesn't check any of those cabinets or drawers that he doesn't use...

All of his furniture is handmade, as in through the wood style. It's all very functional, lots of squares, but elegant. If want different shapes he's really willing and eager to learn how intricate he can get with his jutsu. He's got a remarkably artistic streak, despite his serious demeanor. You'll never have to buy a new bookshelf again, he'll just make them.

Yamato likes quality time and gifts as his receiving love languages. He works really hard for the village and having someone focused on him and appreciative of his hard work and attentive to his needs is key to being a good partner for him

You can't go wrong if you show your appreciation by making him things that he likes, ie a craft, homemade item, or really involved food. He's also not opposed to an evening of pampering where he has your full undivided attention after a day spent sight seeing.

Gaara

He doesn't make the first move in a relationship, which leaves him in a fun lil' stalemate for a while with his eventual mate, because you can't make moves on the Kazekage and he's thinking "I'm the Kazekage, it would be an unfair power dynamic to tell them I think about them every time I write poetry lately..." On a trip back to Suna, Temari takes one look at him and you and then scolds Kankuro because "I can't be the one to manage both kinds of diplomatic relations. Please do something to make my life a little easier." Kankuro then attempts to organize scenarios for you and Gaara to meet. These go poorly in the way of all comedic anime interludes but do result in the two of you bonding more closely.

Gaara was raised to be the leader of a military nation, but he winds down by engaging in more traditional artistic pursuits. All three of the siblings actually have a talent in at least one area of the more refined arts. Gaara is very accomplished at calligraphy, and I'm not kidding about the poetry, he really does compose different works and a lot of them are very good. He even worked hard at some point during his courtship to create a public stone garden in the village which he sometimes alters during festivals so it has different designs.

He is very responsible when it comes to Kazekage duties. He's also been performing them since before he turned 15, and has almost no penchant for mischief. However, he can be easily coaxed away from his office in the name of training his children/students, where he can be further tricked into simply enjoying himself. He's actually a really patient, insightful teacher.

He has an unfortunate habit, only slightly curbed by age, of being willing to drag everyone into a goal he decides is worthwhile. While he mostly used credible threats to get what he wanted as a child, he's since become very adept at manipulation. Mostly, he's genuine and persistent, but he also knows how to get other people to want to follow him. This includes knowing the exact Look to give his mate whenever he wants something.

I think you could easily write him as demiromantic/aromantic. He isn't romantically attracted to anyone right away, and if he does develop those feelings they aren't all-consuming, but there are certain people he can see himself partnering with for the rest of his life, and certain triggers for kicking those feelings off with his alpha.

Nagato

The more I research him, the more it is clear his canon outcome is the bad-end version of the shonen trio trope. Yahiko and Konan were in love with one another, and Nagato was the one who loved them both enough to follow them to the ends of the earth. Nothing in any world was ever going to deter him from that, so his Alpha needs to be pointed in the same direction, ideally devoted to Yahiko and his original Akatsuki as well.

Nagato is the one who guides his Alpha in believing in the ideals of Akatsuki. Before the original trio falls apart, this is done without any ultimatum or ulterior motive. Nagato genuinely believes in the dream Yahiko has, and felt very motivated to bring that hope to his Alpha. It was only afterwards that he truly started to fall in love with them, although that was the original spark.

He likes to read, although he seldom has the time or opportunity to do so. Jiraiya's taught all of the Ame orphans to read and write. He truly enjoys ready philosophical treatises and dialogues. He is a fan of fiction but very slow when reading these because he prefers to experience the world himself first hand, interacting with people and places. He once dreamed of traveling throughout Amegakure and the surrounding nations as a kind of pilgrim.

Nagato nearly died after he fought Hanzo for the first time, not because of his injuries, but because chakra depletion left him unable to sense his Alpha. Believing them dead while he was near delirious, he himself nearly died from the grief of losing Yahiko, and them on top of this loss, despite Yahiko's final wish.

In a version of the world where his Alpha does not survive Obito's slaughter of the original Akatsuki members, Nagato recovers their body and turns it into the Preta Path of Pain, appropriate given the path's callback to possessiveness and desire, and representation of the Hungry Ghost Realm. In the version where his Alpha survives, Nagato becomes very possessive over them, only willing to let them take missions for the Akatsuki alongside Konan, alone, or preferably not at all as you three nurse your grief within Amegakure.

Shisui

You know I love those Uchiha men. They just have a vibe... Shisui in particular. His appearances never make me think first of his death, but of his kindness and his protectiveness over the people he cares for; he dies smiling. Unfortunately, Shisui's path really only works in a non-massacre scenario, since he is approximately sixteen when he dies, which is too young for him to have a mating bond, although I do HC him as considering courting someone at the time the coup starts to take over his life. The with-massacre scenario is one in which Itachi is able to get Shisui out of the village, possibly that he secretly survives the fall thanks to his summons.

Shisui's parents were either not ninjas, or are individuals who have had to retire for the corp for some reason. What we know about him says he was the family breadwinner after he was made a jounin, which leads me to lean towards non-ninja parents. This is particularly interesting for Uchiha clan members, since we don't get to see what the civilian members of clan families do in the Naruto world and most assume the Uchiha clan is shinobi-dominated. It's doubly intriguing when we also know the famous Kagami Uchiha was his ancestor (likely grandfather > great grandfather if we base off other known generations). Since we don't have canon confirmation of this stuff, I guess it counts as a HC?

Given the above, he's the most likely of the Uchiha on my list to willingly and happily take on a civilian Alpha. While I haven't totally fleshed out the background for this pairing, I have toyed around with the idea of an acid-tongued relative of someone from the Daimyo's court whom Shisui met on a mission catching his attention. This oc is a bit of a tsundere with an infamous temper who only Shisui with his notable empathetic and pleasant demeanor is immune to. They become one of the Land of Fire ambassadors and Shisui travels with them on a sort of long-term assignment before they eventually settle together in the village.

The reason they settle in the village is that Shisui decides he wants to have kids and knows that the Uchiha will never risk the sharingan passing into the control of another family or political body. His alpha has to sign a bunch of paperwork relinquishing their ability to inherit anything that might give their family power over their and Shisui's children, but enjoys arguing enough that they remain an ambassador even after settling in Konoha so they can wipe the floor with anyone who has anything to say about Shisui being the reason for their departure.

In the survive-the-fall scenario, Shisui remains blind, retires from being a ninja, and lives with his Alpha in a civilian city, where they help hide his identity and spoil him as much as he will allow. There's potential in this scenario for a path which probably fixes Sasuke btw. There's a lot of options here.

Sai

He intentionally emotes more than Yamato, however while Yamato mostly keeps his facial expressions hidden, his reactions to his Alpha are almost always honest. Sai explicitly cultivates his ability to make facial expressions because he was trying to fit in with normal people, throw them off guard, and do his job as a spy better. This makes it more difficult for his Alpha to tell whether Sai is actually showing that he likes something or not. It takes a long time to figure it out. Eventually, his reactions naturally start to correspond with his emotions around family and friends so it's easier on everyone.

His Alpha thinks that Sai really doesn't like them at the beginning. Although he doesn't necessarily understand why, he picks up on this very quickly and tries to fix the situation throughout the next few months, to varying degrees of success. Eventually, he decides to show you how he feels by painting a portrait of you as he sees you. It's exactly as intimate as you'd think it would be. For better or worse, Sai eventually has to come out and say he can't come up with any courting gift more genuine than the portrait to show you how he feels about you personally, which will tip his Alpha off that he is interested in them.

Because he has difficulties showing his emotions, and also in understanding the nuances behind others' reactions, he likes straightforward methods of communication. He trusts his Alpha implicitly and is incredibly perceptive so he is able to read their responses to him. He enjoys words of affirmation the most and appreciates when his Alpha takes the time to talk through things with him. He also likes physical contact, craves it even, but can quickly become overstimulated depending on the situation. He genuinely wants people to like him and to have sincere connections with the people he meets by acting like himself. Although Sai works hard to "earn" his place among the other people in his generation, it takes him a long time to see that everyone has already accepted him, and to understand that relationships take time and hard work.

For many years, he believes he physically can't have children because Root made all of its operatives starting about 5 years before Sai joined infertile. This insights conflicting feelings in him. On the one hand he never has to worry about accidentally becoming pregnant, which is very nice when he starts navigating his physical desires with his mate. On the other hand, he will never have the option and that hurts, because so much was taken from him in the way of choice and this is another one of those things. The procedure may be reversible in some members because I can see Root forcing long-term operatives to have families with their targets to get closer to them, or being gross enough to try and breed operatives, but Sai doesn't know this.

He likes swimming. He has a favorite swimming spot on the Konoha river. It's the kind of activity that sincerely has no purpose, and he finds a serenity in it, in a similar way that lots of people find a zone of focus when running.

I'm so sorry bestie but this one is gonna get us killed by the fandom: if you think the villain's should have gotten a redemption arc but think endeavor didn't deserve one, you're a hypocrite 100%

This is coming from someone who didn't like endeavors atonement arc. I don't like how characters treat him so softly. I don't like how rei forgives him so easily and pushes him around in his wheelchair. I don't like how hawks is reduced to endeavor fanboy hypeman. I don't like how none of the heros treat him differently once the news comes out!! I don't like it!! But endeavor did change, he removed himself from his kids lives, he apologized to his children and wife, and didn't argue when natsuo went no contact with him.

The Villains on the otherhand? They didn't want to change, and that was the point! Izuku wanted to save shiggy, but shiggy didn't let him. You can't save someone who doesn't want to be saved. Same for touya. His family desperately tried to cool him down but he literally let his hatred burn him alive. These people were too far gone to be saved, they deserved help sooner. That's why the phrase "we keep reaching our hand out" is so important. Even after failing to save those they were trying to, they a still reach out their and in an attempt to save those who need it, so something like that never happens again. (I'm not including toga in this cuz fuck what happened to her)

If you're argument is that they deserved better or whatever bc of their tragic backstories; they still killed people. So many people. So many random innocent people that had nothing to do with their trauma. At best they would be in prison for life with mandated therapist sessions. Actions still have consequences (which I wish endeavor had, but in his case rei would have to press charges herself since it's domestic abuse and not murder, which I don't think she would do)

At least endeavor did SOMETHING in his arc, the villains just doubled down(except for toga, my fucking baby look what they did to you)

Okay going to address the paragraphs one by one cuz there's a lot here and I don't want this to be as rambly as the other post LMAO

Lowkey? I don't think there's such a thing as being deserving of a redemption arc or not. It's like you said, Endeavor chose to get better and the villains didn't. They were all given the opportunity to be better people, and turned that down for their petty revenge. That is literally the point of the Todoroki storyline.

2. Endeavor's arc is kinda bad actually

I feel like it's all a byproduct of how rushed the latter half of MHA feels. I think somewhere around the Joint Training arc Horikoshi realized he set up far too much stuff for it to pay off without MHA turning into Naruto or One Piece and pretty much every character suffered from that lmao

Endeavor is especially bad because his arc depends IMMENSELY on how other characters react, and despite the immense amount of time put into the Todoroki family plot, the only characters with any nuance to their opinions of him are Shoto and Toya. Natsu just hates him, Fuyumi is given no explanation on why she forgives him, and Rei is just. a mess (why did she say it was partially her fault that Toya got hurt. no it wasn't. it was the domestic abuser's fault.)

3. The villains just doubled down

Yeah. Like you said yeah that's the point, they were offered the chance to get better and they all turned it down (apart from Toga like you said, and... I'll get to her), and ultimately what the narrative is extremely blatantly trying to say is that you should always offer a helping hand to people, and if they turn it down, that's their choice yes, but you should learn from that. If you can't solve a problem you should at least try to prevent it from happening again. that's the point of the little kid in the final chapters, a random civilian helped a kid that looked supposedly had an evil quirk and next time we see him he's in UA.

4. "oh but they deserved better"

Hate that I don't have a better term for this but it's a case of Voldemort-Umbridge syndrome. A lot more fandom people have dealt with abuse than with mass murder, and the villains are shown in a sympathetic light where Endeavor very much wasn't, so a lot of people tend to focus a lot on Endeavor's actions and not as much on the villains'. So like yeah objectively they did worse things than Endeavor lmao they still deserved the chances they got to get better but. they didn't take them. They are generally dangerous people they'd end up locked in Tartarus like AfO if they were tried for their crimes, and that would both be a less satisfying ending and not at all something they would be okay with. Hell we got something close to that with Toya and his last scene was just him saying how much he fucking hated the other Torodokis. He was offered the chance to improve a thousand times and did not take it.

5. At least Endeavor did something, the villains just Didn't

Toga. OOOOOH Toga. The way she was fumbled in the second war is insane. She died of blood loss because she stabbed Ochaco. She fucking died of blood loss because of a single impulsive decision. The one villain that did the least heinous crimes (Spinner notwithstanding) and is has an actual good fucking excuse for said crimes pretty much kills herself. Hey Hori, you could have illustrated the point about people being willing to change more easily if you just let her live :D you didn't need to make up a new character for the final three chapters this story already struggles with far too many people being in it :D you could have rehabilitated her :D:D:D:D:D

So yeah shounen manga with a rushed af final act suffers from the characters in said final act having rushed conclusions to their arcs, more at 11

as much as i love shipping hwoarang x steve, as a jin main i can't help but feel like a loud minority of them seem to really hate jin. i remember someone on this site said like "they clearly get along better than Hwoarang ever did with Jin". like they think jin is a rude bitch who constantly trash talks hwoarang. when jin has shown throughout the series (especially tekken 3-5) he actually gives a fuck about hwoarang. unlike other "edgelord" characters like say sasuke or vergil (especially the former, who is such a jerk bastard that constantly calls naruto and sakura "annoying" and tries to kill them multiple times on his own volition), jin never intentionally hurt hwoarang's feelings or downplay his strength in any way. jin straight up apologizes to hwoarang for breaking a promise in tekken 5, and also says he's busy with family issues at the time. if jin really was a rude person, he would've called hwoarang "an annoying weak nuisance who is nothing compared to him". jin also saved hwoarang's ass in tekken 4 when he was about to get arrested by the military, jin could've easily just left hwoarang behind but he decided to help instead. in his non-canon tag 2 ending, jin clearly enjoys going on a motor bike race with hwoarang. jin also actually smiles when he is around hwoarang too, which means he is happy around him and actually appreciates his friendship with him. the only time jin "tried to kill him" was in tekken 5, when he lost control of his powers and hwoarang got hospitalized. jin is only distant towards hwoarang because of his fucked up family starting shit and his devil gene which he couldn't control at the time. he doesn't want hwoarang to get into the cross fires. it's thanks to tekken 6's existence where jin kazama was OOC as fuck in that game we get takes like this in the community.

like i said earlier i LOVE hwoarang x steve, i enjoy looking at fanart of the two being shipped together and i have so many bookmarks of them as a gay couple on ao3. i wish hwoarang and steve got to interact more often in canon outside of tekken 5 intro, tekken 8, and street fighter x tekken. i love watching hwoarang's character relationship with steve fox. but i get so angry when they hate on jin for "being a stupid kazama/mishima getting in the way" of their ship just like how so many damn SNS/SasuNaru shippers hate on literally every female character in Naruto (I hate both SNS and Sasuke with a burning passion). I enjoy reading HwoSteve fanfic, I just hate seeing my main being basically a victim of yaoi sometimes lol. (T＿T) hope you have a good day, been enjoying your blog so far.

surprisingly i don't care much for the steve x hwoarang ship. i dunno why! maybe due to their lack of interactions outside the stuff you mentioned? (not that that's ever stopped me before haha!) but i do see the potential in it. and well, jin, hwoa, & steve are my brot3.

the funny thing is, outside of tk6 and awful crossovers that were affected by tk6's virus, jin is usually nicer to hwoarang than hwoarang is to jin. usually hwoa tries to instigate jin, much to hwoa's failure. actually, it's not like jin is any "meaner" to hwoa than steve is. in all their official interactions, they tend to fight or insult each other lol.

i find it funny that there's a big belief that kazuya was influenced by the devil gene and is truly a Fine Guy, but when jin was genuinely not in control (devil nearly killing hwoa in tk5) -- everyone still blames jin and uses that as ammo as to why he's truly a Bad Guy lmao.

really and sadly, many shippers tend to hate any one that "potentially gets in the way." i know i used to argue with jinxiao shippers who would go as far as to deny jin & hwoa even being friends just because they can't stand the idea of the "hwoajin" ship getting in the way. even though i'd only say they're friends not lovers -- which is true! they are CANONICALLY friends, it's so silly to deny that.

there's a charm to tragedy hanahaki but every day I want to make comedy hanahaki and the only thing that stops me is my brain going on a little journey instead of researching to write. My favorite type of hanahaki-adjacent concept is for hanahaki to be, in essence, seasonal allergies except the thing you're allergic to is feelings and the main treatment is catharsis, usually coming from talking it out with someone, and the dense motherfuckers treatment, for people who don't know what triggered it, is to spend quality time with friends and do other things that would serve to make someone feel better. (So theoretically, a person with a very solid understanding of themselves, who is always honestly expressing their feelings and who has a good support system in place, would never get such allergies)

So for some it's a one and done kind of ailment and for others it comes and goes...something that isn't necessarily deadly but can be quite irritating depending on what you end up with

The comedy potential...the angst potential...the combination comedy-grief of having fits of funerary flowers on an anniversary...the gap moe of a very serious icy person having their stone-faced facade crack because they sneeze and a teeny little flower pops into existence...

Years ago I made notes for a genshin fic but currently I am in Naruto hell so I'm like u know what. I think the funniest possible thing is for the Uchiha to be either really good at not catching feelings-allergies out of sheer self-presevation or really uniquely blursed in that not only are they prone to being super deep in their feelings (it's a whole thing!), they also tend to keep to themselves, so the odds are good that at any given moment an Uchiha somewhere is just. Going thru it. Having to experience the mortifying ordeal of being known. Do you think that kind of thing would stop the momentum that lead to the Uchiha massacre (because they're very scary competent but they also have massive amounts of gap moe because you can't watch someone stubbornly refusing to acknowledge a steadily growing pile of flowers without like. feeling like you've come to relate to them a little bit.)

Team 7 watching Sasuke with morbid fascination because he's trying to stubborn it out...nods very seriously... (Madara would be a funny one as well) (You'd think Obito would catch it but actually it's Kakashi, and he hates it) (the most alarming patient would be Naruto because he looks like he should have his heart on his sleeve, and he does, but there's also some stuff that he keeps close to his chest...)

The world accidentally saved for the time being because Madara cannot stop hiccuping small blossoms and it's. What do you even do with this. And whenever they treat him it keeps coming back and it keeps getting a little more dramatic every time, and then eventually they drag a confession out of him in front of whatever witnesses are good for plot and it's like, he's very clearly being genuine because otherwise the flowers would continue. So. What do u do when the scariest guy you know is having to be vulnerable

(The other funny one would be Tobirama for the gap moe but u know. Scary Ghost Man attempts to hide his emotional allergies and fails in an accidentally comedic and possibly heartbreaking fashion)
