You got invited to the SIDEMEN Tinder In Real Life youtube video. You are acutely aware to what the Sidemen are and you've seen their videos before. Now to be fair, the genres between your channel and their channels were pretty different. The Sidemen were known for football challenges, those 100$ vs 100,000$ challenges and other things with a similar vibe. You on the other hand, you did vlogs, lifestyle hack and tips, in your time you've achieved some disstracks and occasionally broke down some formula 1 grand prix weekend.

The moment you saw the instagram dm from the Sidemen official account you weren't sure how to react. Should you be excited? scared? worried? yeah.. all. It was the Sidemen, Logan Paul, Mike and George (idk who Mike and George but who cares).

Eventually you accepted the offer and waited till the day you had to be "picked up" by kinda random men for 5 minutes straight. The day came, you got dressed for the video shoot, they made you wait with the other girls until they called your name and then you walked in.

"Hi, I'm (your name). I'm 24 and i'm from Newark, New Jersey" (go devs go) You've practiced that line like 50 times before you left, not because you wanted to come out of this video with a new man but because you didn't want to embarrass yourself lmao.

he never watched this type of thing. he never really watched stuff at all. but suddenly here he was binge watching every single one of your videos. it was as if he had no control over himself and he just wanted to continue to watch them for the rest of the day.

by the time he had realised how late it was, it was dark out and the time read 6:43am. it must've been the delusion that made him type out the comment, or the fact that he hadn't actually slept yet. but either way he made a comment and that, that was the beginning of the start of everything.

You and Jack had been dating for a few months. You knew he was in a very public relationship with a model before he started dating you and you didn’t mind. Not until you and Jack went public and all of the internet seemed to be against your relationship. You couldn't lie, after once again going down a rabbit-hole and looking at all the photos of them together, you couldn’t deny how in love they looked.

jack❤️: I only agreed to meet with her because of all the press. I don't want them talking about us getting back together. I made it clear to her that we’re over

When Jack finally got home things were different. you finally felt good in your relationship after the rough week when he was away.

“I’m really sorry about everything,” Jack reassured you for what seemed like the hundredth time. 

“I just… with Alice it’s different. I don't want you to see her again. It’s gotten worse” you look down at your hands so you could avoid eye contact with Jack.

“The comments have gotten worse?” he asked, sitting up in bed to look at you. 

“Yeah… I just, they want you guys back together so badly. It’s literally like a movie Jack,” your laugh was tense as you told Jack your true feelings. “I just don’t know if there’s room in your life for me,” you whisper after a brief pause and you feel Jack tense next to you.

“Pass me your phone,” Jack said, holding out one of his hands expectantly. You did as told and passed it over silently. He scrolled around for a minute, before showing you your own instagram comments causing  you to frown.

“I know what they’re saying about me” you were annoyed. Did he want you to be more upset?

“No look at the accounts” he said.

“I don’t get it,” you stated, pulling your phone back into your grasp and scrolling through more comments.

“Do you know any of these people?”

“No…” 

“Then what they’re saying shouldn’t matter. I’ve moved on from Alice, i’m with someone who I love” Jack cooed, reaching a finger up to touch your cheek causing you to smile. “There’s only room in my life for you. You’re the one I want y/n. I’m not reading these comments and agreeing with them. I text you, or I come home to you and I think I am so lucky to have y/n in my life” Jack smiles and so do you. He takes your phone back and disabled your instagram comments, and then limits his own. “I’m not going to let anyone make you feel like you don’t belong with me” was all he said as he started playing with your social media settings.

You sat back and admired the man you loved.

In the morning you and Jack laid in bed, your head resting on his chest as he combed your hair with his fingers. you felt so alive when you were with Jack. You could feel the little bubbles of happiness and excitement whenever you were with him. 

you moved to sit up, looking down at Jack you smiled and he smiled back up at you. “morning” he mumbled as he trailed his hand down your shoulder and arm. “good morning” your smile widened as you leant down and kissed him on both of his cheeks. 

you didn’t check your phone for the few days you stayed with Jack at his apartment. you were on a high, and you couldn’t believe how melancholy you’d get when you were feeling low.

I'm not usually a fan of hunger game AUs cuz they usually don't take into account the actual characters and are just about the games, which is dumb and not really the point imo, so the fact that you tied in seam vs merchant class stuff, and even made Odalia's hair dye obsession make sense in-universe is so cool.

Also Amity being Peeta fits so incredibly well that's so genuis??? She's got a thing for dramatics and so does Peeta, she'd do anything for the girl she loves and so does Peeta, she's good at defensive close quarters combat(usually chosing the abomination glove rather than more long range attacks) which kinda fits in with Peetas wrestling..... I'm obsessed.

I have so many questions tho! Amity is also very different in terms of attitude/general personality. Would she have trouble acting charismatic for people who want to see her dead like Katniss did?(considering she dgaf about the abomination presentation in canon, she doesn't seem to like pretending. At least not after she befriends Luz bc pre-Luz friendship Amity and post-Luz friendship Amity are admittedly very different) or be more like Peeta and be a really good liar.... Luz seems better for the charismatic role(at least considering canon since she befriends lots of people and often fakes smiles for those she loves....) but otherwise makes for a very good Katniss. Her attitude could be very different from canon and closer to the small snippets we see of her when she's mad. Given that she'd be forced into a role of primary provider in-universe. Fiercly loyal and willing to fight tooth and nail for those she loves is extremely fitting. And on top of that you have Katniss's strained relationship with her mom due to her dad's death and Luz's strained relationship with Camila and her Dad also died when she was younger... omgggggg

Obviously lots of stuff would be different, but the fact that so much fits so perfectly is insane as a massive toh + hunger games fan I don't know how i never saw it.

I agree their personalities would be quite different given the extreme situation, but thats the difficulty with these sorts of AUs 😔 but i guess it's something thats got to be balanced to not go too OOC especially if its written! Esp on the lumity dynamics~ Oh i didn't even notice the combative abomination matching with Peeta's wrestling until you mentioned it!! Someone on twt told me that Peeta's camouflage bit could be Amity camouflaging in a puddle of abomi-goo haha

FINALLY finished ultra despair girls. rambles and ending spoilers ahead

i almost rage quit during the final boss fight because the combat mechanics were at their absolute worst (which is saying something because i found the combat incredibly frustrating front to back). but narratively the ending was. fine i guess. i think sdr2 did the whole "i reject your dichotomy" thing better and the way monacas plan got thwarted was kinda. dumb. i liked the fukawa/komaru development though! having monaca back komaru into a corner and then fukawa saves her, which monaca didnt account for, was good! but the whole. giant monokuma comes out of nowhere and tears the building down. defeat it and then you win!!!! really ruined the whole scene i think.

honestly komaru and fukawas friendship arc was the best part of the game. (also every komaeda appearance but thats just because im insane.) like the fight in the middle was SO yuri. especially when genocide jack held the knife up to komarus throat and she didnt even flinch??? obsessed. honestly fukawa kinda gets on my nerves as a character and that didnt really change, but it was cute that she finally made a friend. i liked it. the scene where fukawa finally got komarus name right was nice, and i like that she never once messes it up after that. and the way komaru tries to call her toko-chan once they become friends and fukawa really cant handle it so she goes back to fukawa-san, but then she calls her toko-chan in the after credits scene....... really good. theres more than that but just..... their relationship is a little unconventional but still really sweet and i like it. i think its good as the central relationship of the game. and also i think they should kiss

and. im sure ive complained about this before but im complaining about it again. absolutely BAFFLED at the decision to make the main villains abused children. genuinely what the fuck is that. its not that it COULDNT work but its not handled well at all..... like. yes they were manipulated by monaca, who was manipulated by junko. yes they werent REALLY the bad guys because komaru was being manipulated into siding with the adults for monacas grand plan (although by the end it was more like. both sides are wrong. so they /were/ still bad guys, just not the only bad guys). i dont CARE. the whole "woahhhh monaca was faking her disability for attention!!! because shes evil!!!!" twist??? awful. im not opposed to the concept of a character faking their disability for manipulative reasons but i resent the constant framing around these kids being "the bad stuff you went through doesnt excuse your actions". to be clear - im not saying that because you were abused as a child means its okay to kill all adults ever. but i am saying that kids acting out after being abused by their fucking parents is extremely reasonable, and the narrative is intentionally exaggerating this type of behavior in order to punish it. and im TIRED OF IT. monaca faking her disability for attention is literally explicitly because she felt like an outsider in her own family. yes it was manipulative. yes you shouldnt fake having a disability. but children whose needs arent being met will do whatever it takes to make sure those needs are met. and this is framed as Evil Villain Behavior and i am NOT HAVING IT. humanize the motherfucking abuse victims or die by my sword

anyway. overall. i got through it so it clearly couldnt have been too bad. i think im making it sound worse than it was - it does have its charms. but. i didnt really find the characters, plot OR gameplay that enjoyable. it has its moments but overall i didnt really have fun. so. not really a good game for me. but now its done and i can move on to the rest of the series!! yippee!!!

but then again when the katara lying to zuko about being sokka sitch went down I wouldn’t have hesitated to pretend like she did so… maybe I’m just a bad person. (jokes, I totally think suki was valid for her response and I actually think it was an insanely emotionally mature response???? like being emotionally mature is about recognising your emotions and reacting appropriately so you don’t hurt others in the process unnecessarily, NOT ignoring your emotions/not having them to begin with so you can always put the feelings of others before your own and have the “ideal” reaction… not to be too deep about this AND I DONT THINK PEOPLE MEANT IT TO COME ACROSS LIKE THIS but it also makes me feel kinda iffy about the fact that suki a teenage girl is being criticised for letting her own valid emotions get in the way of her assisting sokka a boy through his trauma.. kinda giving women expected to perform emotional labour for men all the time…….. i think yaz&ryan and ryan&graham shouldve had episodes like the black spot or the girl who waited that centered their relationship and made them count on each other to save them, where like the doctor gets out from between them whether thats received well (black spot) or not so much (girl who waited)

i mean i can imagine graham might have some thoughts and feelings about the way the doctor - the other ostensible adult in the room - handles ryan and yazs - the kids' - safety. hes responsible for ryan and i can imagine he probably extends that feeling to yaz as like an honourary second grandkid

i would pay to see graham confront the doctor à la rory "you make people a danger to themselves" and "this isnt fair. youre turning me into you" (smth smth im one of the few who wont turn myself into you so you force me to idk not the point) not about the same subject of course but something like,,, well like you cant keep them safe

i think a lot abt like how graham literally doesnt have the skills or knowledge to keep ryan and yaz safe in alien environments so he has to count on the doctor for that. he cant do a whole lot of his own risk assessment in situations hes never been in before so he has to trust the doctor's are right. and from s12 onward it becomes clearer that sometimes shes Irrational As Fuck and when it's sometimes then it might be all the times and you have no way to gauge that and no way to mitigate it like shes going a little bit insane in front of your eyes and you still have to trust shes thinking clearly enough that she can keep the kids safe youre responsible for. like at what point do you just stop risking it and take them home?

in canon obvs graham never stops risking it but i think it would be really interesting if there was an episode where it's a bit too close and he confronts the doctor about that. about the fact that like, if youre denying everything you might be feeling then youre not gonna account for how those feelings might be affecting your decisions or perceptions. and then the doctor will freak out about being Abandoned and cover that up too so shes gonna say smth stupid and fucked up and diagonal like i just wanna see it. i just think it would be neat

and i want to see how like yaz&ryans friendship and ryan&grahams relationship would develop/change under stress and out of earshot/perspective of the doctor. like we get a lot of that - ryan and yaz on the veranda in australia or that time in tsuranga or the end of can you hear me - but i think it would be soooo cool to have like at least one episode just dedicated to each of those relationships. an episode where the doctor is,,,not an antagonist really but like, where we get to see their perspective, their situation, their relationship as its own thing that the doctor is not a part of

about the siblingification of friendships, sorry im totally about to make myself a stand in for steve here, but im an only child, i have felt v lonely, and i have this one friend who calls her close girl friends sisters,, and i just do not feel it, i love her, and she is one of my best friends, but i just do Not see her as a sibling. and i think steve would be the same way tbh, also my most sibling adjacent feelings have been for ppl around 5 years younger than me (just like Steve & the kids/teens<3) but unlike steve, i haven't had any intense trauma to increase the chance for sibling bonding.

idk i just think that it would take More for steve to feel sibling feelings for ppl around his own age or older.

Kitty was a child no one ever wanted to look at, she didn't have friends as a child besides one.. Piper.. a girl Kitty adored.. she was popular, strong, loud and just everything Kitty wanted to be herself, she'd follow the girl around, do anything that she asked.. when they weren't together she'd spend all day working on things with her father, he was a mechanic and an inventor, and he taught Kitty everything he knew! she caught on fast, she was a natural at it!

The older she got the more she realized that people barely noticed she existed, unless she made a scene, screamed or did something dangerous no one would look at her besides her family and Piper.. it reminded her of games she played.. such an odd feeling.. she hated it.. she wanted the attention, for people to see her, they saw Piper just fine? why couldn't they see her as well?!

As life progressed she began to do more dangerous things, live streamed as she'd pull any stunts she could think of! when she did that people saw her! .. afterwards they always forgot tho.. even when she almost died no one remembered her! she couldnt take it anymore.. maybe if she killed someone then eyes would be on her for good! sure she'd be on the run but who cares if it finally got her seen! .. she didn't go through with it that night.. she couldnt do that, not to Piper..

It got worse.. one night she snapped, an old man was causing her problems.. flirting with her even as she told him to fuck off! .. at least he was seeing her.. that was surprising, but she didn't want it if it was like this.. she wasn't going to be some tragic victim of a case, its not like anyone would believe her anyways.. so when he leaned in to kiss her, tried to grab her face.. she stabbed him, watched him bleed out on the ground..

She made a routine of that.. kill those people, they all saw her.. and she hated every single one of them.. plus! at least she could hear about the aftermath on the news..

When Piper found out she was furious.. Kitty didn't see why! its not like she'd been any better! .. the fight almost killed her.. she'd never been as strong as the girl.. and only managed to get through it by dirty tactics.. bombs and improvised weapons that she'd been able to create.. after it she stumbled home.. started working on a new body.. her parents barely questioned her.. it was nice, they still cared tho, still brought her food even after she stopped eating.. after all as she replaced each part of herself with a new one, trying to keep her body from dying she learned that now she didn't need food, and once the body was complete she left..

also fics where the major antagonists are a group of girls that harrass jimin r super mean bc god we cant have a MAN do that or he's a predator. you get me? and the alpha jk who is quiet and broody and doesnt even HAVE to fight bc he's soooooooo strong the other alphas are just scared of his vibes. like you know the type of fic im describing. in general whenever the major antagonist of the fic is a bunch of women who also want to fuck jk (which like. if we're supposed to believe jk is soooo hot... like. they should?) and the author calls them a "gaggle" of women and emphasises how they "giggle" and their high pitched unpleasant voices..... brother we have some serious internalised misogyny to unpack with that one.

to briefly explain the setting first - magical girl knights: paragons (mgk paragons for short) is a medieval eurofantasy story setting where there are knights who are magical girls called paragons and they have magic powers and fight monsters and shit. paragons are very rare and views on them differ depending on region and belief but generally they are revered as heroes/divine warriors/etc.

johanna (curly haired girl) is a paragon from a noble family, and is not only revered as the only paragon of the kingdom but also a status symbol for her family, the golden child etc. she falls in love with lan (straight hair freckled girl), who is by all accounts just an ordinary farmgirl from one of the villages on johanna's family's land, honestly at the sight of her like. breaking a chickens neck. and then they had a whole whirlwind romance thing going on classic princess (not quite) and peasant type sitch. i imagine their courtship with sort of hadestown wedding song vibes... except if orpheus was a rich kid so not like hadestown at all. idk its the idealistic bright-eyed heroine x more cynical grounded girl who cant help falling in love with the earnestness to me. also have some discord messages about it

so yeah turns out being deified as the people's saviour and an infallible symbol of goodness and righteousness does mess up your perception of self huh. pretty regular for paragons, honestly. (i imagine johanna had to go to battle many times not just against magical monsters but also leading the battle in conflicts with other nations too.) i haven't hashed out the exact circumstances but eventually and unfortunately, she does die in battle and gets recognised as a martyr. (what they won't tell you though, is that she was so, so tired. she has to die a hero, after all.)

lan and johanna really didn't have that much time together either (maybe a couple years? mortality rate really sucks for paragons). they did have a deep connection, but also they hadn't really gone past the honeymoon phase much. if they had more time and the relationship had started to stagnate with johanna still stuck in her family lan would've definitely started growing restless, maybe even a little resentful. maybe they would've changed. ah well, they didn't have time for any of that to happen

johanna also never gets to see their child. that's right lan was pregnant when johanna dies. and their kid, svanna (the wasian girlie), also gets paragon powers! yippee.

lan increasingly clings to her daughter, which is the only thing she really has anymore, but also becomes detached to the rest of the world and loses that sharpness about her as she just. doesn't have much else for her anymore. this is made worse as johanna's family takes over svanna's upbringing, especially as she starts growing older and showing signs of being a paragon (which isn't really a hereditary thing, i just made this svanna's backstory to uh. cause her turmoil. and also in-universe they don't know that), and that mother-daughter relationship also gets... strangled in some way.

also being a martyred paragon's kid and having powers (that you never wanted and might be scared of) that uh definitely isnt going to lead to issues down the line. but thats a whole separate story entirely. :)

some final additional context:

so my friends and i actually conceptualise mgk paragons as ye average magical girl show, just with like a medieval aesthetic on top of it. and the funny thing is if it was a show... lan and johanna would entirely not be in it? svanna would be like a minor character who shows up in one backstory episode. i just got really insane thinking about her and was like "well what about her lesbian mums"

so if you've been reading this being like "well whats so magical girl about this" thats because this is like. maybe thirty or forty years before the "main storyline" takes place haha. the main storyline involves a much more teen- and team-oriented main cast - in-universe there is definitely a trend of more paragons cropping up, in the past generations they were rarer (and thus much more isolated, like johanna was. this generally has fucked up past paragons too) but now they have #friendship is magic

can you elaborate more on steve being abandoned by the narrative?

yes <3 so i think there are two very unfortunate circumstances surrounding steve's character that have led to the current state of his plotline: 1. after not killing him in s1 like they originally planned, the duffers have never really had a plan for steve and 2. they are extremely influenced by audiences. when they were conceptualizing steve to fit in among the ensemble cast, the duffers were picturing him as a douchey boyfriend who unceremoniously dies. lonnie was originally going to come back to the byers house to save jonathan and nancy. there was no need to picture where he'd be 4 seasons down the road, so they just didn't account for that. then joe keery charmed them so hard that they literally couldn't bear to kill him, so steve ends season one still somehow alive.

but we've already established the nancy/jonathan plotline, because jonathan was once the duffers' self-insert who must defeat the evil jock and win over the girl. they couldn't just backpedal on that right away, so they needed to give nancy and jonathan a plotline alone, away from steve. but steve only ever functioned as an extension of nancy until this point, so what do we do with steve now? in an accidental stroke of genius that the duffers have admitted was a last second decision, they pair him with the children and make him into a babysitter. it almost instantly boosts steve into being tied with hopper and el for most popular character from the show, potentially even beats them both out. in 2017 when s2 aired, you could not escape mom steve jokes. it was everywhere, steve was everywhere, joe was everywhere, it was arguably the second coming of #justice for barb, which, in netflix business-y terms, was the exact viral meme type situation that the show wanted and needed to sell merch and remain relevant and say "see we still got it!!!"

you know who has the 2nd most lines in the entirety of season three? directly behind hopper? ahead of winona ryder? steve. think for a second about how absolutely insane that is. the character who was written specifically to die in season one. joe keery's name wasn't even in the season one credits, because he wasn't considered a series regular. and now he has the 2nd most spoken lines in the big blockbuster season because he rocketed up in popularity so intensely. season three marketing features the mall so heavily, creates a literal physical shrine to 80s nostalgia, and when the very first promo is released an entire year before the season airs, who's the star of that teaser trailer? and who, pray tell, is featured in the main brand sponsorship ad that plays in movie theaters worldwide? thats right its america's little darling steve harrington.

but here is the issue. the duffers look at what made steve popular and they see: funny exasperated babysitter, heartthrob action hero. they're like oh okay so we should keep putting him directly in the center of the action, bang him up every season to give him his classic bloodied aesthetic, but. he still needs to be funny. we can almost kill him, but we can't actually kill him because he's profitable. we can let him get horrifically injured because it's badass, but we still gotta let him crack jokes. it creates this very weird tone to steve's role in the story starting in season 3 because he's both the action hero and the comedic relief and protected by plot armor, so we get scenes where he's being literally tortured until he's begging for his life and gasping for breath but the tone is still.......fun? comedic? light and goofy? i think the duffers also forgot he's supposed to be a teenager.

now this is partially me making educated guesses but i feel pretty confident about this: once again, like gollum, joe keery uses his big shiny eyes and manages to evade death again in season four by being so likable and charming and marketable that netflix execs or shawn levy or maybe even the duffers themselves were like oh fuck we just can't do it. they were obviously tossing around the idea of taking mom steve all the way by letting him die sacrificially for dustin, so in season four they make eddie, transfer steve's relationship with dustin directly onto him, ctrl f steve's name in the death scene and just type in eddie instead, and once again steve is alive but he's directionless.

so what does he have now, in season four? i think the duffers have a whiteboard somewhere with steve's name and around it are little circles that say "funny" "cool" "DO NOT KILL" and steve is now stuck in this endless cycle of getting beaten up, popping back up somehow unharmed like a looney tune, saying something cute and oblivious, rinse and repeat. because that's what worked, that's what made him popular all the way back in season two. that's what the duffers are obviously keeping in mind when they're writing steve: popularity. not realism, not depth, not growth, just literally how to continue making him popular. meanwhile, other characters get to be part of the actual story. other characters get to serve a purpose other than selling merch. when el is bitten by a monster, she gets to actually feel pain and need help because that's realistically what any human would need. when hopper is tortured, he gets to suffer and ponder his existence and reflect on the relationships in his life. steve never gets any of that, because the writers just don't see steve as the 19 year old boy on his 4th straight year of traumatic events that he actually is.

they literally just see him as a money maker, there for cool viral moments and witty lines and maybe the occasional emotion experienced but only if it's about his romantic prospects. and the narrative that other characters get to have and be apart of just kinda runs parallel to steve. he's there, technically, but he's not really in the story. and it's like actually crazy because you'd think after all the funko pops he sold, he'd have earned an actual storyline!!!
