to briefly explain the setting first - magical girl knights: paragons (mgk paragons for short) is a medieval eurofantasy story setting where there are knights who are magical girls called paragons and they have magic powers and fight monsters and shit. paragons are very rare and views on them differ depending on region and belief but generally they are revered as heroes/divine warriors/etc.

johanna (curly haired girl) is a paragon from a noble family, and is not only revered as the only paragon of the kingdom but also a status symbol for her family, the golden child etc. she falls in love with lan (straight hair freckled girl), who is by all accounts just an ordinary farmgirl from one of the villages on johanna's family's land, honestly at the sight of her like. breaking a chickens neck. and then they had a whole whirlwind romance thing going on classic princess (not quite) and peasant type sitch. i imagine their courtship with sort of hadestown wedding song vibes... except if orpheus was a rich kid so not like hadestown at all. idk its the idealistic bright-eyed heroine x more cynical grounded girl who cant help falling in love with the earnestness to me. also have some discord messages about it

so yeah turns out being deified as the people's saviour and an infallible symbol of goodness and righteousness does mess up your perception of self huh. pretty regular for paragons, honestly. (i imagine johanna had to go to battle many times not just against magical monsters but also leading the battle in conflicts with other nations too.) i haven't hashed out the exact circumstances but eventually and unfortunately, she does die in battle and gets recognised as a martyr. (what they won't tell you though, is that she was so, so tired. she has to die a hero, after all.)

lan and johanna really didn't have that much time together either (maybe a couple years? mortality rate really sucks for paragons). they did have a deep connection, but also they hadn't really gone past the honeymoon phase much. if they had more time and the relationship had started to stagnate with johanna still stuck in her family lan would've definitely started growing restless, maybe even a little resentful. maybe they would've changed. ah well, they didn't have time for any of that to happen

johanna also never gets to see their child. that's right lan was pregnant when johanna dies. and their kid, svanna (the wasian girlie), also gets paragon powers! yippee.

lan increasingly clings to her daughter, which is the only thing she really has anymore, but also becomes detached to the rest of the world and loses that sharpness about her as she just. doesn't have much else for her anymore. this is made worse as johanna's family takes over svanna's upbringing, especially as she starts growing older and showing signs of being a paragon (which isn't really a hereditary thing, i just made this svanna's backstory to uh. cause her turmoil. and also in-universe they don't know that), and that mother-daughter relationship also gets... strangled in some way.

also being a martyred paragon's kid and having powers (that you never wanted and might be scared of) that uh definitely isnt going to lead to issues down the line. but thats a whole separate story entirely. :)

some final additional context:

so my friends and i actually conceptualise mgk paragons as ye average magical girl show, just with like a medieval aesthetic on top of it. and the funny thing is if it was a show... lan and johanna would entirely not be in it? svanna would be like a minor character who shows up in one backstory episode. i just got really insane thinking about her and was like "well what about her lesbian mums"

so if you've been reading this being like "well whats so magical girl about this" thats because this is like. maybe thirty or forty years before the "main storyline" takes place haha. the main storyline involves a much more teen- and team-oriented main cast - in-universe there is definitely a trend of more paragons cropping up, in the past generations they were rarer (and thus much more isolated, like johanna was. this generally has fucked up past paragons too) but now they have #friendship is magic

also in general mgk paragons to me is about girlhood and womanhood and knighthood and sainthood and personhood and also most importantly the power of friendship and importance of human connection. u guys should check out the #mgk paragons tag for more content please please please pl
