The Bold Type 3x09 “Final Push” and 3x10 (Finale) “Breaking Through the Noise” Review
Before I say anything — they put “Wasabi” by Little Mix on the soundtrack for the finale. Please, everyone, do yourself a favor and start listening to Little Mix. That is all.
Welcome to the last two episodes of The Bold Type Season 3! I’ll confess that due to traveling, work, and being in a wedding I’m getting this out late, so I figured I’d do a joint review. It wasn’t that difficult to manage, honestly: with these two episodes being the penultimate and the finale, they certainly have the same themes and conflicts driving them. Let’s start with 3x09, “Final Push.”
At face value, the title could be interpreted as a “final push” for the season, but the episode also sees our core three each have a “final push” of their own, the cumulation of a season of storytelling.
Kat’s “push” is both the end of the election and the mounting pressure to decide between Adena and Tia. Pressure is certainly mounting for her campaign, and she’s just starting to realize what this means for her time at Scarlet — sure, she has big plans if she’s elected, but gaining a council seat would mean not working at Scarlet anymore. Patrick certainly isn’t helping by forwarding her options for her replacement, and seeing Adena didn’t make her choice between her and Tia any less complicated.
Much like Kat, Jane is being “pushed” both professionally and personally — she’s struggling at a time when she should be thriving. Pinstripe is still on his book tour, getting on her nerves every time he gives an interview where he puts on the playboy act, not unlike the main character in his book. Her Pamela Dolan story with Jacqueline has the potential to be a career defining, groundbreaking piece, but she’s dealt a huge blow when Jacqueline is forced to give the story over to Patrick at the dotcom. Apparently Pamela Dolan, as soon as she was informed of the Scarlet story, decided to launch her own version at another magazine. If they had any hope left of publishing first, they couldn’t wait for the fall issue. The only way to publish would be on the dotcom, still making a splash but handing Patrick most of the influence.
Next is Sutton, who is…putting on a fashion show? I guess that would be considered a push, since apparently an influential designer will be there and this could be the start of a potentially successful career for her.
I want to be able to write more about Sutton — she’s doing well, she’s happy, but her story lacks oomf. She’s not getting the complex storylines that Jane and Kat are. Sure, her and Richard have had the occasional conflict or misunderstanding, but that and her foray into a design seminar (which we’ve barely seen) are the only things they’ve given the incredibly gifted Meghann Fahy to work with. They did give her a moment with Carly after she opened up to Sutton about how insecure she feels when compared to the models at Scarlet and the girls on instagram, but it fell flat.
Her side story with Carly this episode did little to improve Sutton’s lack of depth; it seemed like an afterthought when the show suddenly remembered they needed to give Sutton some kind of inspiration for her designs. It is pretty on-brand for The Bold Type to touch upon body image, but it came on too quickly and from a character that doesn’t have a lot of influence (sorry, Carly, you’re still adorable). Sutton is supposedly not good with children and hardly even knows Carly, but she manages to get her to open up about her insecurities and gives her a touching speech nonetheless. To say this seems forced would be an understatement.
The very end of the episode is perhaps the final “push” for everyone — in the closing minutes we find out that Richard got a job offer in San Francisco, Ryan returns to tell Jane he kissed someone else, and Kat loses the election. Seriously — if you shut off the episode one second before the ending you would have missed it.
Alyssa’s episode rating: 🐝🐝🐝.5
That leaves the finale to pull everything together, to help our core three “break through the noise.” (See what I did there?) The problem is, while this was a good episode, no one actually broke through any of the noise that the previous episode created. It certainly created more noise by the end, leaving everyone on a massive, show-changing cliff hanger.
A prime example of this was Sutton’s sudden change of heart — the fashion show she put on was nice, and everyone looked great. The message was there, and despite the quick decision of adding Carly to the mix, it was still really touching to see Carly being able to watch everyday women in the fashion show.
Sidebar one — I’ve never liked when people say “REAL women should be in fashion shows, not models.” I get what they’re saying, I really do, but REAL women come in all shapes and sizes, including skinny. Please don’t take that to mean that skinny women face the same hardships that other women face, because they don’t, but I think we need to remember that there are people who are naturally skinny. I like the term “everyday” women much better, since that implies that fashion models don’t represent women that aren’t, well, fashion models. Anyway, moving on.
I will say (sorry, Sutton), the fashion was not good. I really hoped that they’d spend a little more time developing Sutton’s style; it would be a lot more convincing to see her as passionate if her work had a little more pizazz to it. Instead it ended up looking like the outfits of a 1970’s American Girl Doll (again, sorry Sutton).
Sidebar two — can The Bold Type make it so I don’t have to apologize to Sutton all the time? It’s exhausting. Work on that, please.
All of this, only for Sutton to realize she didn’t want to be a designer. Now, that I’m fine with — but leaving that for the finale was pretty lackluster, the result being a bit of a wasted season if Sutton was going to end up right where she began, kind of like Jon Snow back at the Wall (don’t @ me). If they wanted Sutton to explore design and in doing so discover it wasn’t for her, that’s fine, but keeping that to a half season arc would have been much better.
The build up for Jacqueline and Jane’s Pamela Dolan story also resulted in a bit of a let down — giving the story to the dotcom certainly made sense for the story, but not for the show. After a season of buildup, which I was pretty excited about, the story was published pretty unceremoniously. Jane’s dealing with Pinstripe was also a bit of a bore. I’ve maintained that I think that Jane and Pinstripe are good together, but we only see that when they’re amicable. When they’re fighting there isn’t any romantic angst, and if Pinstripe were to take off I don’t think he’d be missed. Compare that with Adena, whose presence was definitely missed after her breakup with Kat.
My point is, just because I supported Jane choosing Pinstripe over Dr. Ben (ugh, remember that guy?) doesn’t mean the show has done the job of convincing me that Jane and Pinstripe are or should be endgame. Jane ends up going back with him, adamant that he has zero chances left, and they end in a really sad place. They admit they love each other, but I didn’t read that as a victory. It sort of read like an unfortunate fact — I love you, so I guess I have to give you another chance. Maybe Katie Stevens did too good of a job acting devastated.
Everything sort of builds up, only to end in a disappointing drop off. For Kat, we see her deal with the loss of the election (bravo, Aisha Dee). I will say that I expected the loss — it would be a little too idealistic to give Kat a win, in my opinion, but the real reason for my expectation of loss was The Bold Type’s tendency to push characters out of their comfort zone only to pull them back again. It seems, much like Jane’s Incite and freelance storyline in Season 2, that no one can really be gone from Scarlet for too long. Much like her election story, Kat is hanging in limbo with Adena and Tia after deciding that she isn’t choosing anyone for now, and is instead going to focus on herself. This on its own isn’t disappointing, but combined with everything else that’s falling short, it contributes to the dragging down of the episode.
Now, for the comfort zone point I made earlier — it seems like that is where this bummer of an episode is coming from. If Kat won, she’d have to quit Scarlet. If Sutton wanted to continue designing, she’d probably have to make some moves and go to fashion school and/or seriously cut back her time at Scarlet. If the Pamela Dolan story had more punch, maybe it would have catapulted Jane’s career and send her to bigger and better things outside of Scarlet.
Despite The Bold Type being a great show, accuracy has never been a strong point. I don’t think anyone whose worked at a magazine or in journalism in general can look at this show and think “oh yeah, it’s just like that.” Keeping Scarlet at the center isn’t the mistake, it’s how they maintain it. We’ve seen all three of the girls take giant steps forward only to fall back on Scarlet, and it’s happened so many times that it’s a let down. It’s certainly possible to keep Scarlet around and let these characters grow, but it seems like The Bold Type hasn’t found that method quite yet. However, that giant cliffhanger might foreshadow some branching out at least — Scarlet is done, presumably shut down, and it’s not clear to me how they’ll manage to get it back.
Of course, most of that has to do with how little we know about the situation — was it the Pamela Dolan story? It doesn’t make much sense to shut down a whole publication over a very popular article. Was it Jacqueline revamping the fall issue to be all inclusive? It would have been easier for them to fire Jacqueline in that case, and they DID just hire Adena has the in house photographer the night before, so clearly HR knew nothing. If either of those are the reason the magazine is shut down, it could easily be turned into a “Scarlet is a martyr for inclusivity and inconvenient journalism” story.
Even if it’s (and it is, most likely) temporary, I think The Bold Type needs to make the world of Scarlet a little more harsh in order to make it more realistic, and not use the magazine as a crutch that the girls all lean back on. As soon as that happens, they could have their best season yet.
Alyssa’s episode rating: 🐝🐝🐝.5
The Bold Type has been renewed for a Season 4, premiere date TBD, with Wendy Straker Hauser replacing Amanda Lasher as showrunner.

Story and Setting
Outward starts you off indebted to your tribe, a debt in which you must try to repay. In an effort to clear the amount you owe, you embark on an ill-fated voyage to try and earn enough to pay it off. Of course the ship runs aground, leaving you with almost no money and a crowd of angry villagers demanding payment. From here on out, the game opens up into three distinct main quest lines, with a small variety of sidequests you can participate in. Sounds like a good setup, but it is not executed well in my opinion.
This is a good friend, or so I’m told
You are tossed into this town and told someone in your family did something bad, you’re again told this one person is a close friend, you’re told that you are a part of this tribe. Due to the way the story is told, none of this is given adequate time to develop. I’ve poked at one of the main quest lines out of a feeling of professional obligation and I still have no real drive to pursue it. This is fine though as Outward does not advertise itself as a game with an in-depth story, rather the focus is on the story that you make for yourself.
Even with that though, things fall a little flat as I can tell the devs put a fair amount of work into this world, but very little of it comes across to the player. Very few NPCs will talk with you, and many of them are just shopkeepers that have just add a little bit of flavored text. If there’s books or other written lore entries in this game, I haven’t found them yet. There are ruins scattered throughout the game, but so far I’ve not found much inside any of them so far. To be fair, this is a very slow paced game and I’ve not gotten too deep into the more dangerous ruins, so there might be more if you venture further in. That being said, it’s not very excusable that I’m still so clueless on the world given the amount of time I have spent playing.
And thus starts the legend of the Bird Lady
Gameplay
In my original draft, this section was turning into a small novel as there are a lot of mechanics in this game but two things made me stream-line this section. Firstly, if the mechanics of this game aren’t going to interest you, the Cliff Notes version is all you really need to read.
Secondly, if the mechanics of this are your cup of tea, then all you’ll want to read is the Cliff Notes version. See, a lot of this game is about exploration, discovery, and the story that you create. Going through the game and making decisions based on imperfect knowledge is a major part of what makes this game unique. There is a tutorial, and it is a must for this game, but you’ll really be short-changing yourself if you go in with a complete understanding of the mechanics. This is the same for most things in this title, for some this will sound like heaven and for some it will sound like a complete waste of time.
Avatar customization is limited, but it has a purple hair option so it’s all good.
At its core, this is an action-RPG, while there are plenty of side mechanics, the main thrust is exploring dungeons and beating down the bad guys and monsters. After administering the beat downs you will loot all of their stuff, maybe find an upgrade or two, sell the rest, and move onto the next group of walking loot.
Combat
This brings me to my major criticism of the game, and one that I think will be the proverbial straw for many gamers. The combat is not fun as it is clunky, unresponsive, and it is difficult to use the flashier more complex spells if you’re playing solo. After the most difficult fights have ended, I don’t feel like I achieved a victory, rather I just feel like I cheesed the AI. I honestly can’t tell if this is the result of inexperience or if it was a deliberate design choice. Either way, combat really needs to be better given how much of it you’ll be doing.
As for the rest of the mechanics I’ll just skim over them. Survival is a big aspect of this game, with hot and cold weather, hunger, thirst, and the need for sleep. It might sound like a bother, but the game does a good job of encouraging you naturally to keep track of all your bars. As long as you are mindful, you won’t get in trouble.
That being said, the UI to convey some of the information is lacking. For example as you take damage, you recive ‘burnt health’ which reduces your max HP until you either eat specific foods, drink a potion, or sleep. However, the UI really isn’t very clear on this and I died several times before I figured out what that slightly different color red meant on my health circle.
I mean it’s obvious in hindsight, but it did take a few deaths to figure it out
Death
Speaking of death, you don’t really ‘die’ in this game. If you lose all your health, you’ll pass-out instead. This will cost you one day (which can be a major problem for some quests) and you’ll wake up in a context sensitive situation. This can either be fun, an annoyance, or a really bad situation since the time might have caused some food to rot, which means you can’t eat to get rid of that hunger status, as well as your max HP and stamina is also now reduced. It is certainly an interesting way to handle death, I’ll give the developers that. Something to be aware of is that because you can’t ever die, the game does not allow you to save. There is only one auto-save for your character, and the game is saving almost constantly. Don’t count on ALT-F4 to bail you out of a bad choice either.
Character Progression
Character progression is mostly done by getting new gear, you don’t level up in this game, though you can gain new skills. Some skills are free, some cost silver, and a few require you to spend one of your three skill points to unlock. While skills help, your gear is everything here. Getting a new piece of armor or a better weapon drastically effects how well you do in combat. This also means in certain situations you can lose all your advancement because all your gear gets taken, needless to say that really stings. Though it is always possible to get your stuff back, however it might be pose a big challenge, but as far as I can tell nothing gets destroyed unless you sell it to a merchant and their inventory resets.
Multiplayer/Co-op
Multiplayer is potentially a big bonus here as not only does it have online drop-in drop-out gameplay, but it has split screen co-op as well. I didn’t get to test this feature a lot but from what little I did test out multiplayer worked well. It does seem to make the combat an order of magnitude easier though, which could be a concern. To me this is a non-feature since I don’t have anyone in my house I can play with and I’m not all that interested in playing with random people, but I can see how others would love the ability to play an RPG like this with a friend.
Crafting
Finally, there is quite the crafting system to explore here. There are no skill points here, you either have the materials to make something or you don’t. There are recipes but you don’t get to read them before crafting, If you look it up on a wiki (or in some cases just take an educated guess) you can craft the item and the recipe will be added to your journal. While you can craft weapons and armor, you’ll mostly be crafting adventuring supplies such as fire rags and potions. Cooking is a major crafting area as well and is very well integrated into the other systems. Different dishes have different bonuses, with more complex dishes providing additional bonuses.
Audio and Visual
There is honestly not much to say here, the visuals are to put it simply, functional. Occasionally you’ll come across some interesting monster designs and much of the gear you can equip is unique in design, but most of the terrain and architecture is very plain looking. There’s also tons of small, tiny errors in the terrain with the occasional prop that just looks out of place such as the giant rib cages that look like they’re made of plastic.
This does not look like weather-aged bone
Another thing about the visuals that ties in with gameplay is lighting. When it’s supposed to be dark, it is dark. Running out of light in a dungeon is not good situation to be in. While this sounds like an interesting mechanic, it really doesn’t work well when you are outside. If you’ve lived your life in the city, you really don’t realize how dark the great outdoors gets. As someone who does a significant amount of camping in his life trust me, this games gets moonless nights perfectly, which ultimately means you can’t see a darn thing. This makes outdoor navigation a massive pain, even if you have a lantern.
I did not doctor this screen shot at all
Audio is a bit of a mixed bag as the actual songs aren’t bad, and SFX are serviceable, but whatever system they are using for dynamic music is a bit wonky. I’ll be on my 17th trip back to town to sell off the two swords I looted and suddenly the music will swell into this epic score, usually spooking me a bit in the process. The voice acting is a bit off as well. It really does feel like they just went around the office and said “Hey, you’re not doing anything. Go get into the sound booth!” I really don’t think you’ll miss much by muting the sound and listening to your own stuff, but it won’t hurt the ears to leave their stuff on either.
Replayability
OK this might be a bit of a controversial view point, but I feel this game has very limited replayability. As I mentioned in the gameplay section, the vast majority of your adventuring effectiveness is in your gear. True, there is the choice of using magic or not, and which of the skill trees you wish to max out, but honestly you’ll probably have a favorite combat style that you’ll want to stick with. The only real reason to replay the game will be to experience all three faction story lines, since once you join a faction, you’re locked out of the others.
As I’ve already stated though, I don’t feel the main quest lines aren’t all that compelling. Certainly not enough for me to want to redo the game from the start. I really feel that whether or not you want to replay this game is going to hang on both how compelling you find the three factions vs how much the gameplay annoys you.
Pricepoint
So despite that fact that I just roasted Outward for a perceived lack of replayability, I still feel this game is a good buy. Assuming again, the mechanics sound like your cup of tea. Due to the pacing and the size of the world, this is going to take you a solid 30-40 hours to finish one of the main quest lines. It might take you a little less time for additional playthroughs, but not much so for a $40 game, that’s not bad at all. The devs give an estimate of 40-80 hours to fully experience the game, and I can see someone easily spending 60+ hours in this game if the mechanics happen to click with them. Toss in the fun you can have with a friend or random people on the internet, and Outward will really give you your money’s worth.
Final Thoughts
If I could give this game two scores I would. This game has a target audience and for them this is easily a 7.5, maybe even an eight. For the average gamer looking for a neat RPG experience to tide them over until Elder Scrolls 6 or Cyperpunk 2077 it would not even come close to that. Very slow pacing, unexplained mechanics, removal of modern systems, clunky combat, all of this adds up to an experience that the average gamer is probably not going to enjoy.
But if you are in that target group, those looking for an RPG that absolutely does not hold your hand and allows you to get hopelessly lost if you don’t pay attention, and will rip you a new one if you mess up, then this game is for you hands down. In the end though, I do need to choose a single score, and I’m going to go with the one I think will reflect the experience most people will have with this game.

The Layperson’s Guide to Online Research
The Internet is full of badly researched and sometimes straight-up wrong information. Who would’ve guessed? From reinterpretations of ancient sources being taken at face value by history enthusiasts (like that infamous pre-patriarchal Persephone post) to well-intentioned but ahistorical writing spreading misinformation among modern polytheists (like the myth of Hestia abdicating in favour of Dionysos), it’s often hard to know what is trustworthy information and what is not. Unfortunately, this makes things difficult when you, a non-academic, want to research a topic.
My biggest recommendation will always be to turn to a local university library (often there are even lectures and conferences you can attend without being a student) or to subscribe to a digital library like JStor. On the other hand, I completely understand that for various reasons, not everyone can access these resources. This is why I’m here to help.
In this post, I will outline the steps you should take to check whether an online source is trustworthy and up-to-date. I will mainly focus on researching ancient history, but bear in mind that you can use the same (or similar) steps to research many different topics.
The vetting process below may seem like a lot to take in, but it all boils down to five questions:
where does this come from?
who is the author?
what are their sources?
when did they write this?
who else wrote about this?
Step One: Where does this come from?
The first thing you need to do is check the website where the information comes from. Trustworthy signs to look for are a .edu or .org web address, a university logo, or the description of the website as a professional resource. Very, very often, websites with flashy or sparkly designs are made by amateurs and are not trustworthy. Any web page that doesn’t tell you who wrote it or why is not trustworthy.
When you’re looking at books and articles uploaded online (such as Google Books), make sure they were published professionally by a publishing house or peer-reviewed journal. Mainstream news articles range from accurate (BBC) to completely unreliable (Daily Mail), but since even the best of them can be sensationalistic, I recommend digging further.
Another very important thing to look out for is ideology. Is the website devoted to a certain issue, like proving the Ancient Greeks were black, the Sumerians were contacted by aliens, or the Hittites worshipped a pre-patriarchal Mother Goddess? Congratulations, this information is biased. Some of it may be correct, but you should check steps two to five very carefully before believing it.
Generally, you should look for websites that are focused on your topic, not websites that use your topic to prove a point.
Here are two examples to illustrate the difference:
Not trustworthy: this page about Persephone as an archetype. The website focuses on the Enneagram, not on Greek mythology, and the web design is amateurish. Even though the page mentions mythology, its purpose is to establish Persephone’s personality type, not to discuss her role as a deity in Ancient Greece.
Trustworthy: this page about Ancient Egyptian women and religion. The website looks far more professional, and by clicking on the logo in the top left, you will get to the organisation’s page, The Stoa Consortium. On the right, there is an “About” section which explains that the website was set up by a Professor of Classics and is funded by various universities, as well as by the US Department of Education.
However, determining whether or not a website is any good is not always so easy. Theoi.com, for example, is an independent resource with no academic support, but it’s very well put together and reliable. Meanwhile, Academia.edu is a platform for scholars, but less reputable people can easily slip through and post their “translations” of haiku in Linear A. Experts can have informal blogs, and non-experts can write professional-looking news articles. It’s hard to know which ones of them to trust.
This is where Step Two comes in handy.
Step Two: Who is the author?
A trustworthy source will always identify its author. Some pages (like my own blog’s “About” section) will only tell you the person’s credentials, often for privacy reasons. This is a good start, but you should try to find out more - particularly whether this person actually is what they claim to be. (In my case, it’s fairly easy to tell, since I’ve posted pictures from university projects (x, x) and my identity can be deduced from various links and tidbits I’ve shared - but please be skeptical about what I say as well! Just because I’m an ancient civilisations student doesn’t mean I’m always right!)
Once you know who the author is, you need to check whether they are not only educated, but educated in the subject. This means a university degree (preferably a masters, and even more preferably a PhD) or other proof of expertise in the subject (like an experienced weaver sharing their perspective on ancient tapestries). Whatever the person’s qualifications, they need to be serious (i.e. not “one time in college I took a class on Greek mythology”) and directly related to the subject.
Here are some examples:
Not trustworthy: that pre-patriarchal Persephone post. Its author is a layperson who fell into the same trap I’m trying to prevent: they read a few web pages and decided they were the truth. Luckily, they seem to have somewhat learnt from their mistake.
Usually trustworthy, but not in this case: Gerda Lerner writing about the Hittites. While Gerda Lerner was very learned in women’s studies, she was not a Hittitologist - nor particularly familiar with ancient civilisations in general - and she did not have the nuanced understanding necessary to discuss women in the context of Hittite society.
Trustworthy and non-academic: Janet Stephens’ hairstyle reconstructions. Janet Stephens is not an archeologist, but she is a very experienced hairdresser. This makes her qualified to reconstruct and reproduce ancient hairstyles. (Note that this does NOT make her qualified to discuss, say, the religious implications of hair-binding in Ancient Greece. It makes her qualified to do what she does: style hair.)
Trustworthy and academic: Paul Schubert’s blog (in French) about Ancient Greece in the modern world. His “About” page has a link to his university page, which contains his biography and credentials. He writes about his expert subject, and stays well within its boundaries.
Step Three: What are their sources?
Next, you need to determine where they get their information from. For ancient history, the number one, most important source is ancient texts. Anything that cites ancient texts with their reference (Homer, Iliad, XΧII 389-390) is automatically more trustworthy than anything that doesn’t. If you want to research in-depth, I would recommend looking up these references to get an idea of what they say (Theoi.com and Perseus both have free text databases).
References to modern texts (especially books and articles) are good, but the author shouldn’t only cite these. This turns research into a game of broken telephone - so-and-so told me that so-and-so said that Plato wrote... What’s more, you need to make sure these sources are also trustworthy. Just because a page provide links doesn’t mean they’re relevant or well-researched - if so, then rickrolling would be the peak of academia.
Lastly, I shouldn’t need to say this, but information without sources is not information. That’s like me telling you I’m secretly the princess of Liechtenstein. It might be true, but you can’t know for sure without proof.
Again, some examples:
Not trustworthy: this quote by Plato and this one supposedly from a cuneiform tablet. Neither has a clear reference, nor context: the first is just attributed to Plato’s Symposium, and the second’s author varies from Naram-Sin to a Chaldean king to Cicero. (What’s more, both have strongly ahistorical content. Plato would never have written about “Greek mythology”, and the Mesopotamians had no concept of a “book”.)
Could be trustworthy, but you should check: Medievalpoc’s sources on Ancient Egyptian transatlantic voyages. Yes, a variety of links are provided, but are they any good? A few clicks will show that they lead to the Daily Mail, a paper written by two ideologically-motivated Mormons, and a bunch of articles about ancient people building boats (which nobody doubts, but which doesn’t prove they could sail across the Atlantic).
Trustworthy: Hittite Prayers to the Sun-God by Daniel Schwemer. This is a fully cited article with ancient sources.
Step Four: When did they write this?
The next important step is to find out when this information was written. This is because research is constantly evolving, and older interpretations may no longer be considered valid. This obviously includes views with underlying racism, sexism and homophobia, but it also applies to less obvious things, like the fact that the Sumerian word zag is now read za₃.
Unfortunately, for copyright reasons, most information available online for free is a bit outdated. You should still aim for more recent publications if you can, and definitely avoid anything that’s fifty years old or more. The only exception is for translations of ancient texts, which stay pretty much the same apart from a few spots where their translators’ biases come through - and the exception to the exception is texts in Mesopotamian languages, in which case you should really, really try to find a translation that’s younger than fifty years.
Academic podcasts, blogs and newsletters come in very handy here, because they offer insights on modern research while often being written in accessible language.
Yet more examples:
Not trustworthy: Martin Nilsson’s The Mycenaean Origin of Greek Mythology (1932). Though Martin Nilsson was a great scholar, modern research has evolved since this book was published (in 1932 in Germany - a context you can definitely sense while reading). What’s more, it was written before Mycenaean Greek was even deciphered.
Trustworthy: Eric Cline’s 1177 B.C.: The Year Civilization Collapsed (2015). Not only is the writing easily accessible to non-experts, this book is up-to-date and written by someone at the forefront of research in Late Bronze Age societies.
Step Five: Who else wrote about this?
This last step is basically fact-checking. Your author may have the best of credentials, they may have written their article on the most respectable of websites, but their theory could still be rejected by the majority of their peers. Look up the book or article’s title followed by “review”, which will hopefully generate other experts’ opinions on the matter - or just keep browsing different websites.
This step is not the most important and can often be skipped - you don’t need to fact-check every word you read. But if you want to research something in-depth, if a claim seems iffy, or if any of the above steps gave mixed results, you should always look for outside input. And no, you won’t always get definite answers on whether something is true. Such is our knowledge about history. But it will give you a more rounded understanding of the topic, and that’s always valuable.
A final note
If you’re not sure whether something is trustworthy, please don’t hesitate to ask! Historians and history students are your friends, and we want you to have accurate information. There’s a lot of us on Tumblr and elsewhere who are happy to help out with that. We can’t be there for everyone 24/7, but we’ll gladly point you in the direction you need!

Psych student here. I keep hearing a lot about hypnotists using Neuro Linguistic Programming and how it can be used in trancey situations but... From everything I've heard, it's basically pseudoscience. Tumblr doesn't let me link to things in an ask, but there's scholarly articles dating back to the 1980's saying that. (Journal of Counseling Psychology , Vol 32(4), Oct, 1985. pp. 589-596.) (The Wikipedia page also includes a lot of sources debunking claims made by NLP's creators.) [part 1/2]
Is the hypnokink version of NLP somehow different from that? Or is it more a fantasy/role play? Thanks for everything! [part 2/2]
WHAT’S THE DEAL WITH NLP?
Hi! Thank you for your question!
First of all- here is a mandatory psych major announcementfor you: If you are a sophomore orabove, I heavily encourage you to get in some research experience if youhaven’t already. Even if you don’t decide to get a graduate degree inpsychology, this will really help you if you decide to continue in the field inany way.
Also- good for you, psychology major, for caring if psychologyideas from hypnokink are evidence-based!* A psychology major who is not askeptic is a poorly-trained psychology major. You are doing exactly what you’re supposed todo- questioning “common sense” and ideas that are presented to you. In a way,it’s kind of the job of the field to find the holes in “common sense” that noone else is looking for. Good job!
When people in hypnokink talk about neurolinguisticprogramming, they are talking about using a verbal technique (almost a “cheatcode” if you will) as a way of influencing people. This is how salesmen andpick up artists and trainers tend to understand nlp. But nlp actually startedout and was intended to be used as a therapy- often in conjunction withhypnosis. There is no secret,super-effective type of nlp** posted on fetlife somewhere- the nlp we all useis derived from the therapeutic modality.
So- how good is the therapy itself?
If we’re looking to see if a therapy is evidence based, thebest place to look for what is evidence based is the Division 12 website of theAmerican Psychological Association (https://www.div12.org/).(Bookmark this, psychology major!) Under their “psychological treatments” tab,you can search for what are considered the best treatments available forpsychological disorders. You’ll note that nlp is not listed as an evidencebased treatment. (To be fair, nor is hypnotherapy). That’s usually a bad sign.
Let’s move on to litreviews!
If you look further at the few related literature reviews, you’ll see more bad signs. There seems to be very limited evidence basis at allwith more negative than positive results- and the positive results generallyare coming from the lower quality research. I like the one you pointed to anon! Also- This lit review is enjoyably snarky in the discussion section. This one is more modern and seems more robust. Either way, the evidence of effectiveness in any of these is pretty scant. (The officialnlp page on Wikipedia, which you mentioned, is also pretty shady with those damning quotes in the referencesection.) These lit reviews areprimarily based on nlp as a counseling practice, but there’s also negative information heretoo about individual specialized nlp techniques- like eye accessing and using submodalities.
So- if you want to learn an effective therapeutic intervention, you should probably not put too much time or money into nlp training.
However!
Can knowing nlp can be useful for your casual sexyhypnofetishy hypnotists?
Potentially!
Here are some ways:
1. It’s a cultural signifier. Since we (and hypnotistsas a community) have decided that nlp is A Useful Thing, knowing about nlpbecomes valuable. Showing that you know nlp (even a little bit) shows that you’vecracked a book/attended a class and you have sought culturally-valuableknowledge. It gives you authority. For example- I usually ask subjects abouttheir modalities (kinesthetic/auditory/visual/some people throw in others). There’ssome mixed evidence on modalities existing but the most and best evidence saysthat the concept and the theories behind it are inaccurate. But! The communitybelieves in modalities. My subject likely believes in modalities- or at least itis a useful thing to have them believe. If I use their preferred modality, itboth shows that I’m listening to them/respecting them and it shows that I knowenough about hypnosis to be trusted. So- I’ll generally still ask about modalities and use them as though they were real.
2. Theplacebo effect. A lot of what we do as hypnotists is exploit the hell out ofthe placebo effect and people’s pre-existing beliefsabout hypnosis. A spiral, a pocket watch, someone’s eyes- none of these thingshave any power on their own. A bunch of people see my eyes every day andthey’re not hypnotized by them. But they can be very hypnotic when me and mysubject agree that they are! Tricksy language patterns, in my opinion, often worksimilarly to pocket watches or a spirals. Since I am a hypnotist and I am doinga tricksy language thing, the language thing works- in the same way that myeyes work in the correct circumstances. ***
3. NLP isn’t entirely ineffective! NLP was designedby Some Bros watching a bunch of good trained counselors and deciding toreplicate their techniques. Thus, thereis a lot of gently borrowed good counseling technique in nlp! I’ve noticed bothSFBT and ACT tend to teach some ideas that I first saw in nlp- although Isuspect that those may come from a similar parent therapy and not nlp itself.**** Utilizingsomeone’s own language, metaphors, and world concepts (their meta-model, if youwill) when working with them is a good basic therapeutic technique and is utilizedby most evidence- based practices. Outsideof therapy, there’s very strong scientific basis for ideas like subliminal cuesand priming (although some variations- like subliminal messages- have been debunked). Those ideas are somewhat nlp-connected.
4. Feeling like you know a powerful thing is a confidenceboost. Sleezy pick up artists (aka all PUAs) use nlp techniques all the time-some of them successfully. The technique itself may be flimsy, but theconfidence boost of knowing a technique probably boosts their success rate. *****
5. Increase your punning and hypnotist!joke makingability.
So in conclusion:
NLP is a big mix of proven counselingtechniques, wild speculation, great marketing, and somewhat outdated linguistictheories all thrown together and pureed in a blender. (It’s kind of like hypnosisin that way- a big mix of scientifically-based phenomenon, artistry, and bullshit blended together so seamlesslythat it’s hard if not impossible to sort out the active ingredients). There’s afamous book by a therapy skeptic that derides therapy as “the exchange of myths”. In a similar way, there’s a lot of what we do that could be considered exchanging myths in a similar vein. Brainwashing is amyth. The subsconscious (at least the way a lot of people view it) is a myth.NLP is a myth******. That doesn’t mean that these things aren’t fun or sexy or eveneffective in cases. After all, myths are powerful!
But yeah- your scientific skepticism here isvery warranted, anon.
Thank you for asking!
———————————————————————————————————-
*Spoiler: No, they are not!*******
**Except the kind I’m selling!
***And yeah- I admit I’m being pretty simplistic here. I think hypnosis is too complicated to just be a large placebo effect (although I definitely used to believe that)- but the placebo effect is a big component. A lot of what we do is really, really cultural.
****One of the criticisms I read of nlp stated that it’sbasically a grab bag of techniques from a bunch of more evidence-basedtherapies. This may be true. However, that’s also how many licensedprofessionals tend to practice counseling.
*****Although, to be fair, there is evidence that some nlp techniques actually harm rapport- such as over-mirroring/matching words.
******For added discussion- I think a lot of what we do in/with hypnosis is not even something that hypnosis researchers would consider to be actual hypnosis. But- they have no better, more specific and clear descriptions of what hypnosis is and neither do we. It’s a relative experience: If you say that you’re in love, I can’t scientifically validate if you are or are not.
*******OK I kid. But only partially!
#at some point you will probably also become skeptical about therapy and evidence-based practice itself#as well as psychological research#and I'm here to tell you that's normal too#welcome to the paradox!#also- you know why there aren't a lot of psychologists hanging around hypnokink?#stuff like this may be why#but also- I promise you can be a skeptic and still have lots of fun#also- learn some cold reading!#it's more fun and you'll pick up less wrong information#ymmv of course

Contemporary art & history
“My Bed” is an installation piece by the artist Tracey Emin, who belonged to the Young British Artists generation and her “degree of fame stands out even among [them]” (Grovenick, 2005, p.148). She was born in 1963 in Margate, left school at 13 and started her practise in the eighties. Her work is very much influenced by her experiences as a woman and is known to be remarkably sincere and non-ironic, which seems to be unusual for the young British artist genation. She’s well known in the art community as being the "bad girl of British art", for her controversial works that have been seen as non-art, and also for her blatant expression of femininity.
“My bed” was first made in 1998 and first exhibited in the Toyko’s Sagacho Exhibition Space. It was shortlisted for the 1999 Turner prize and exhibited in the Tate Britain. Currently “My Bed” is on long term loan from the Duerckheim Collection in 2015 to the Tate. This art piece was very controversial in the public eye at the time, and still is not entirely accepted, as many people argued that it didn’t count as art which was probably part of the reason why it became so famous. It “doubtless remains that competition’s best-known work- though she didn’t even win the prize” (Grovenick, 2005, p.148). The artwork included dirty underwear, bottles of alcohol, cigarettes and general bedroom mess. The piece shows a chaotic, disheveled bed covered in common detritus. The dimensions of the piece aren’t recordable as they are changed by where the piece is installed due to physical constraints, and to how it is arranged each time it is set up- it isn’t exactly the same every time.
“My Bed” was created inadvertently by the artist during a depressive time in Tracey Emin’s life, after some relationship problems in her life - we even see these indicated in the piece by the used condoms and pregnancy test. After binge drinking heavily, she retreated to her bed for four days, only drinking alcohol and not leaving the bed. Eventually her survival instinct won over her nihilism and she left the bed to drink water, returning to her bed and seeing it again in the state she had created. She then moved it into a gallery - “By reframing it as art, Emin has turned her worst moment into her most transcendent.” (Hudson, 2017)
A lot of how the bed seems to be interpreted also depends on how it is exhibited and with what works. At one point it was exhibited by some of Turner’s works and Emin compared her chaotic sheets were compared to the tumultuous seas and skies of Turner’s paintings (Hudson, 2017). Emin later chose to exhibit “My Bed” alongside some of Francis Bacon’s paintings when it was exhibited in the Tate, her reasoning that “his life was pretty chaotic he just did what he wanted to do” and that “he was a maverick within society” which she felt resonated with her work. (Emin, VHS Pile, 2013)
This piece got a lot of media attention at the time and controversy about whether it was an art piece or not. People would compare “My Bed” to their own beds and ask if that was art, and Emin actually enjoyed this response as it meant people were relating to the work.(VHS Pile, 2013) When people would give the criticism that ‘anyone could put their bed in a gallery’ Emin responded by saying "Well, they didn't, did they? No one had ever done that before.” However in the art world, the piece lost kudos for becoming so mainstream. As said by Marshall Mcluhan, “Art is anything you can get away with” - just announcing something is art and putting it in an artistic space is enough to make it into art. A teenager showed the reality of this perception by a prank that became an artwork,
“Khayatan put Nguyen’s glasses on the floor below an official-looking piece of paper to see how it would be received by gallery-goers. The work seemed to hit a chord with the public, striking in its simplicity, yet – probably – a challenging commentary on the limits of individual perception.” (Hunt, 2016)
This piece was photographed by gallery-goers and well received generally, and then documented by the tweets, which in turn created it into what some called a performance piece. If something is declared as art, and received as art at least by one person, or even just the artist, this would lead us to believe it is in fact art.
Similarly, this piece and Emin’s work in general also influenced the creation of the Stuckism movement which was created by one of her ex-boyfriends, Billy Childish. The name of the movement itself came from her referring to his artwork as “stuck!” The movement is all about opposing conceptual art and the professional art business, as they think it is killing the art world, and not real art. They continue to protest the Turner prize every year, and their movement can only thrive because of artists like Emin. One of the signature pieces from the Stuckism movement was directly referencing the work “My bed”, called “Sir Nicholas Serota Makes an Acquisitions Decision” where he examines a pair of ladies underwear, trying to tell if “Is it a genuine Emin (£10,000) Or a worthless fake?”
There was also a performance piece made with the bed called “Two Naked Men Jump into Tracey's Bed” which only caused the piece to become more famous. Cai Yuan and Jian Jun Xi jumped shirtless onto Tracey Emin “My bed” with words written over their bodies and proceeded to have a fifteen minute pillow fight that required Emin to return to the work and remake the bed into its original state. The two performance artists were arrested, but not charged as both the gallery and Emin didn’t take it any further. The Guardian summarises their intent as non-destructive saying the artists “insist[ed] their performance was not an attack on Emin. "We are simply trying to react to the work and the self-promotion implicit in it. I hope the security guards see it in that spirit."” (The Guardian, 1999)

Portfolio Reviews
As part of my portfolio reviews, I’ve been in contact with several people in the industry to gather feedback and advice for my portfolio so far. Rose Lloyd Rose Lloyd is a Stockport alumni, and has risen far in the industry. She’s represented by Eye Candy agency, who are massive in the illustration world. Her work is bright, bold and at such high quality she’s had clients such as the BBC, The Times, and the British Medical Journal. She uses texture and shape as a forefront for her work, which is something that makes me very lucky to have been able to speak with her about my work, as it’s not just inspiring but also very similar to my own work. Having a creative who can understand your work and the processes behind it, is brilliant in getting feedback. One of the first points Rose made when looking through my work is that she could see that I had a versatile range of media in my visual language, as well as my output. She mentioned that versatility is important, and that if you use more than one medium in your working style, let potential clients and agencies know that. I’m going to continue using different styles, as well as employing various techniques such as using mock ups, as well as if suits best - photography of my work, such as t-shirts, prints and books if needs be. Rose also suggested the I add my contact details to the back, as it’s a nice note to end with. I currently have mine at the front, so I’ll see if other artists suggest the same. Business cards were also suggested, which I’m currently designing! I’m also ensuring I keep my font, colours, and general feel consistent - I’m a brand as an illustrator and clients and agencies need to see that, purely because it looks so professional. Rose, speaking about getting work, also mentioned looking up art directors in Manchester, and just getting yourself out there, emailing your portfolio over so you’re in their books and getting your name out there for potential work! She also mentioned if I wanted to go into editorial work, it’s well worth getting current articles and adapting them as your own. Editorial is so fast paced, so it’s good to get into that fast frame of thinking and ways of applying your skillset to text in a short amount of time. It’ll also put your work into context and be super applicable for potential clients. It was wonderful to speak to Rose, and really nice to see how far you can go in the illustration world! Flow Creative I was given the amazing opportunity by Barney to visit the team at Flow, a huge agency in Manchester. They're a design agency who specialise in motion design an animation, but are super versatile. They have a massive client base and a team who are always looking for work from freelance illustrators - so it’s safe to say they have a good eye for the illustration industry. I spoke with Karl Doran, the creative director, and Sarah - accounts manager, as well as other members of the team. Feedback included my portfolio, website and social media accounts being consistent, presentation of my work being well ordered, and they liked how my website is an open portfolio. Karl commented that my mix of mockups and full digital photos was refreshing, and that mockups used with my (Re)Collection work, as well as both print and digital campaigns is brilliant - agencies and potential clients love to see things in context, and the applicability of your work, so to keep that up! Feedback also included to add sketchbook workings, and work leading up to it - this may be drafts or screenshots - it’s important that clients see this, as it puts your work into context some more, and shows the importance of your process, and how you’ve worked as a designer. I definitely need to start adding these! After showing my ident animations, it was amazing to see that the whole team actually really liked what I had going on - for something I’m really new to, a process that I struggled with, and is still a work in progress - they loved the looping of the saxo wheels, the general over-the-top-ness of the 90′s items, and the lo-fi, VHS feel. Points to improve on were looping my work, perhaps simplifying transitions, and putting them on my instagram as loops or GIFs, as people looking for work such as agencies and clients absolutely love this. Karl mentioned that I should check out Ruffmercy on instagram, and I’m so glad he did! I’m so inspired right now! When chatting, I mentioned how I felt worried that by using the MTV logo so much in my (Re)Collection work, I may be ‘ripping off’ the brand, however the whole team said that it’s a good thing - people in the industry have published ‘knock off’ potential designs and actually gotten work off the original brands! They also mentioned that using Beer Paper from GF Smith for my Beer work was so effective and a really nice touch, and possibly even creating business cards that are beermats! I am SO getting on that! Beermats are collectible, usable, and the thought of someone lifting their mug off it while looking for inspiration and seeing my contact details is a great idea! An amazing feedback experience with lots of things to take back, and my confidence boosted. Thank you for checking my work out and for your time! Tyler Spangler I contacted Tyler last year for a small interview about his views on the creative industry, and so contacted him again this year for some feedback on my PDF portfolio. Tyler is based in California, and uses amazing colours in bold designs covering character, text, and many types of concepts. He has some amazing clients including Chanel, Nike, Outkast, and has featured online in Dazed and Confused, and Hi-Fructose magazine. He’s lovely to talk to and has always had time to give me advice, and is in a great position to learn from and get advice from from within the industry. On sending him my portfolio, he mentioned that he remembered my work from last year because he likes my uses of texture! This is great, as being able to be consistent with my visual language means that I’ll be able to stay in people’s minds and proves better to staying in the radar as a creative! He mentioned that he thinks it may be nice to include project information on my PDF portfolio, similarly to how I do on my website - that it’ll give the viewer some more context. At the moment I only have my captions as to what they are, media, and when they were done. However, my website captions, such as here - simply even with how and why I came about it, why it’s grapefruit, etc. I think this is a great idea, as as well as working sketches and drafts, it gives the full information to viewers and potential clients. If I’m sending a PDF portfolio over it typically means I can’t show someone my work in person, where I’d normally explain and talk through what I’d been working on and why. So that’s a great piece of feedback! He also mentioned that his favourite piece in my portfolio is Elvis Juice, so I’m glad I’ve put it so prominently on my business cards! A few people have mentioned that it’s their favourite when looking through my work, and so it’ll be nice to be able to show people my best work here, especially in chances were first impressions are small, short, and therefore need to be really good and lasting, and an essence of my visual language as a whole. I’m going to add small captions to my work, making sure it doesn’t take over too much or become too much of a read. Ken Maylor Ken is a proper old school illustrator. He’s based in Lancashire, and has been illustrating for decades. He’s produced work for the likes of Star Trek and Elvis Presley annuals, Oyston’s Estate Agency, produced spray positives of photographs for various catalogues, as well as being a police officer for years, he created drawings for the Police and Crimewatch, as well as airbrushing. We couldn’t find any of his old work together, but he now mainly fly ties - as you can see here, he’s got an incredibly craft hand and so it’s no surprise he did so well with airbrushing and producing realistic drawings for the Police and Crimewatch! Looking through my updated portfolio with captions and sketches of the process thanks to Flow Creative’s and Tyler Spangler’s feedback, he had lots of positive feedback. Generally, he said he loves the colours I’ve used, for myself as a brand, and the boldness in the illustrations - they grab attention. The use of my batman making faces image as my logo alongside hand-drawn type is quirky, and he thinks they’re positive and there’s humour. This is great, as I’d love this to be a first impression for agencies and potential clients! Looking through my (Re)Collection work, compiled together with suggestion from Tutorial Feedback to categorise my work, the ‘90′s Called’ poster design reminded him of 90s films such as Lethal Weapon - knowing that the use of items to promote nostalgia has set off in this way for a variety of people who remember the ‘90s differently is great! The (Re)Collection campaign is definitely nostalgic and giving the right message about the ‘90s. The Inflatable Sofa piece casts a good image and Ken said it made him wonder whether watching tv is relaxing, as he saw the sofa as floating on the ceefax due to its transparency - which is a new way of myself looking at it - considering it to be possible to be used for an editorial piece covering technology etc! Going to the beer area/pieces of my portfolio, he suggested that Elvis Juice could appeal to bikers, and the ways in which the grapefruit is used for the wheels is again humorous and thought provoking - it’s lovely and refreshign to see that a fresh pair of eyes can see something like this consistent throughout my work when I’ve never noticed it before! He also mentioned that the sketches and process components are great - the feedback from before has paid off! The use of texture and paint dragged over on such a large scale gives a lovely effect in Beer Dive and allows a relaxing thing to look at - I never thought of this as a relaxing piece, but it’s now something I can use within my visual language if I need to create something relaxing or scenic! The Red Screes design is very relevant to the suggestion of where the ale is from, helping promote its locality - continuing to use the culture of the client and what my work is based on proves well and really shows that there’s deeper meaning and a lot of work put in behind my illustrations - I’ll definitely keep working like this. The craft beer book is accessible, readable for both experts and non-experts, and makes you want to go out and try craft beer! This is wonderful, exactly what I set out to create when I made this - from a portfolio page, I’ve managed to get the best choice and range of photos for Ken to be able to tell this! The Brodie’s Prime fox stance works well, as it looks mischievous but as hough he could be affectionate too, with a good stance considered in the sketches to show he’s on the prowl for mischief. The Tarn Hows XPA piece with the lemon over the building is brilliant and works well with the spotted background, representing the way the lemon is squeezed and he also loved how it makes you think - one of my most conceptual pieces which I’m glad it’s not just me that thinks of it in this way! The Palace cinema piece sets the tone well and the selection of what I’ve illustrated is so apt to the location, using Lancashire roses shows so much relevance. The House Plant piece is so differential in terms of shapes used - he said he could see a sloth, a birds head, a goose - he mentioned that you look for shapes when looking at the illustration and it casts your eye all round. The more you look, the more you see - and then he saw an elephant looking away! And now I see it! I’ve had some amazing feedback from Ken, and I’m so glad I was able to get feedback from such a practiced illustrator with a different variety of work to other artists I’ve looked at - it’s wonderful to see that artists from different disciplines can help me see my work differently, and can bring wonderful suggestions and feedback. Eva Stalinski Eva Stalinski is an illustrator based in the Netherlands, who works with bright colours and bold outlines, with most of her work screen printed as merchandise. Her work is here! Like Chris Madden and Tyler Spangler, I contacted Eva last year for some insight into the creative industry, and received some amazing information and advice! Again, I contacted her for a portfolio review and received some really good feedback. On looking through my PDF portfolio via. email, she mentioned that she really liked the bright colours used, especially yellow - I never realised myself how much I use yellow, and just how much it works nicely with my work! She also mentioned that my work is different from hers in discipline, and in that she uses bold outline a lot, however she could really see my work as merchandise! I’d love to explore screen printing some more as I have a screen printing kit at home, and I love using it! Finally, she mentioned that my beer work is really together and nice. She suggested looking at International breweries, as it’s always good to branch out and get myself out there! It’s strange, because as much as I love beer, I’ve never thought about this so I might do this! Thank you to everyone, as I’ve had so much help with my work generally, and my portfolio has improved massively!

An online marketplace (or online e-commerce marketplace) is a type of e-commerce site where product or service information is provided by multiple third parties. Online marketplaces are the primary type of multichannel ecommerce and can be a way to streamline the production process.
In an online marketplace, consumer transactions are processed by the marketplace operator and then delivered and fulfilled by the participating retailers or wholesalers. Other capabilities might include auctioning (forward or reverse), catalogs, ordering, wanted advertisement, trading exchange functionality and capabilities like RFQ, RFI or RFP. These type of sites allow users to register and sell single items to many items for a “post-selling” fee.
In general, because marketplaces aggregate products from a wide array of providers, selection is usually more wide, and availability is higher than in vendor-specific online retail stores.[1] Since 2014 online marketplaces have become abundant.[2] Some online market places have a wide variety of general interest products that cater to almost all the needs of the consumers, others are consumer specific and cater to a particular segment

Examples of prevalent online marketplaces for retailing consumer goods and services are Amazon, Taobao and eBay, which cut its “buy-it-now” online auction fee in 2008. On the website of the online marketplace sellers can publish their product offering with a price and information on the product’s features and qualities. Potential customers can search and browse goods, compare price and quality, and then purchase the goods directly from the seller. The inventory is held by the sellers, not the company running the online marketplace. The sharing economy In 2004 Yochai Benkler noted that online platforms, alongside free software and wireless networks, allowed households to share idle or underused resources.[6] As the sharing economy inspires itself largely from the open source philosophy,[7] open source projects dedicated to launching a peer to peer marketplace include Cocorico[8] and Sharetribe.[9] In 2010 CouchSurfing was constituted as for-profit corporation and by 2014 online marketplaces that consider themselves part of the sharing economy, such as Uber and Airbnb, organized in the trade association Peers.org.[10] In 2015 Alex Stephany, the founder of online marketplace JustPark, defined the sharing economy as the economic value arising from making underutilized assets available online. 6 Creative Ideas to Make Money Selling Physical Products By Kari Sayers Leave a Comment This post may be sponsored or contain affiliate links. I know I talk a lot on this blog about creating and selling digital products, but it is absolutely possible to find creative ways to make money selling physical products via your online business as well!
Currently, I have two ways that I make money selling physical products. My primary source of income from physical products comes from selling paperback journals using Amazon’s print on demand service. Here’s an example of my most recent journal.
A secondary source of physical product income comes from a t-shirt that I also sell on Amazon. I paid a graphic designer to create a shirt design for me a few years ago and I made it available for sale via Amazon Merch.
I make a few sales here and there. It’s not a significant source of income for me, but there are definitely people who have created full-time passive income selling shirts.
My physical product business is small time right now. In the near future, I plan to sell more journals and planners through my personal development brand. For now, I just love being inspired by the creative journeys of other mompreneurs rocking their physical product businesses.
Check out these physical products below being offered by some amazing women making their mark in the online business world!

Share 4 Tweet Pin 1 Share 5SHARES How to Make Money Selling Physical Products OnlineAs the Internet has evolved and ecommerce and delivery systems have improved, more retailers have decided to sell their physical products over the internet. Setting up an online store that sells physical items is a relatively easy and affordable way to start an online business, and you could be selling your products pretty quickly to a local and worldwide market.
How To Make Money Selling Physical Products Online If you’re not sure how to sell physical items online, you may get inspiration from the list below.
Third Party Ecommerce Systems If you want another company to take care of the technical side of your online business, you have a wide range of third-party shopping systems like Shopify to choose from. There are numerous Shopify reviews that will explain why it’s such a popular Ecommerce platform.
Third party systems are usually extremely secure and they are updated on a regular basis by the security team of the company you are dealing with. You can easily change the look of your website and add products. You are normally charged a monthly or annual fee to set up shop, but it’s well worth the money.
Set Up Your Own Ecommerce Store If you are able to store your own products and fulfill online orders, you may be in a position to set up your own ecommerce store on your own domain and hosting platform. There are many shopping systems available that allow you to display your products, take orders, process payments and fulfill each order taken through your website.
With these systems, you have total control of them and you can make changes to these systems whenever you wish. However, you need to keep your ecommerce system maintained and secure with the latest security updates.
Dropshipping Dropshipping is an extremely popular and straightforward way to sell physical products through another company. Your online store sells the physical item and this product is bought from a dropshipping company at a reduced price.
Mediavine The product is then shipped to your customer by the dropshipping company. Your profit is the difference between the price you charge your customer for the item sold and the price the dropshipper charges you to fulfill the order.
Auction Websites Since eBay was established, a huge number of auction websites have emerged. They can be a great place to pick up a bargain if you’re a shopper, and these websites are also the perfect places to sell all kinds of physical items because thousands of shoppers flock to auction websites every day.
Amazon And Other Leading Marketplaces Sometimes it pays to piggyback off the popularity of other websites, instead of going it alone. Many of the world’s biggest marketplaces like Amazon allow retailers to sell their products on these huge websites. In some cases, these companies even store and fulfill all of your orders, so that you can focus on promoting your products to more shoppers and customers.
It’s never been as easy as it is now to set up an online store. ecommerce technologies keep improving and more shoppers want to buy items online, so you should seriously consider each of the options above.

Top 5 Easy Ways to Make Money Selling Physical Products Online GUEST CONTRIBUTOR 1 COMMENT

Q&A with Apogee’s Alexandra Watson
Recently Apogee announced that it would no longer publish in print but that it would continue in a digital format. From its beginning in 2010, the journal has highlighted work from underrepresented writers, particularly writers of color. We chatted with executive editor and co-founder Alexandra Watson about Apogee’s history, its future and its final issue in print, no. 10, which will be on its way here to Special Collections in the coming weeks.
First tell us about yourself.
I teach a first-year essay writing course at Barnard College. I’m also a fiction writer. I have my MFA in arts and creative writing from Columbia. I’m mostly working on things for my classes, but I also have a novel project, about an epidemic of insomnia. It was inspired by the Portuguese writer José Saramago and his novel Blindness. I started discovering a lot of interesting research about sleep deprivation in the military, for example, and what it does to the psyche.
Why did you and fellow students at Columbia University start Apogee?
We were a part of a student group called Our Word at Columbia’s graduate writing program. The group (was) a place where writers of color and international students could talk about some of the gaps we were finding in the literature assigned for class, the way that fellow students were responding to our writing, and just the wider literary world and the imbalance of perspective. (Apogee) started as a way to make that student group have a tangible product or outcome.
In our first couple of issues, we focused on Columbia’s community, so we mostly published work by students in our program and across the Columbia community. After our second year, around 2012, we realized that the school itself wasn’t championing the cause of this journal, and there wasn’t necessarily a new crop of students who were passionate about taking the mission forward. So we decided to make the journal independent from Columbia, which really wasn’t that big of a step because they had never supported us financially. We started a Kickstarter campaign to get our second issue printed, and we expanded the field of people we were asking for contributions.
Since then, we tried to widen the pool of potential contributors not only by sharing online and in different social media platforms but also by hosting community workshops in New York, where we’re based, so that we keep expanding the idea of who is a writer and whose work is worthy of publication. We don’t want it to be just people who have an MFA or who are professionally connected to the writing world. We want to keep highlighting voices that may otherwise not make it to publication.
Have you published people who’ve participated in the workshops?
Yes, the majority of the writers we publish are emerging writers. In other words, they don’t have a long history of publication, they often don’t have any books published, (and) they haven’t won major awards. (For) about a quarter of the authors we publish, we are their first print publication. We’ve had not only people from our writing workshop published both on our online platform, Perigee, and in our (print) publication, we also had two members of our workshops join our editorial staff as readers.
Do you think other magazines and publishers are more likely today to seek out work from underrepresented writers?
I’ve definitely seen growth in especially online publications that explicitly seek to publish work by marginalized writers. The Offing is one good example. They have a mission that’s similar to ours: They seek out writing from writers of color, women writers, LGBTQ writers, differently abled writers, indigenous writers. For a time, they were an offshoot of the Los Angeles Review of Books, but they recently went independent.
A couple of other small journals come to mind: Winter Tangerine and Nat. Brut have similar missions as well. They have a great aesthetic; they’re beautifully designed. I think they have pretty small readerships, but having so many online platforms does give a wider range of representation than just having print publications like the literary journal world used to be.
Can you elaborate on your plans for Apogee?
We’re still in the process of sorting through our transition. We’ve chosen to go in this direction mostly because we have a high-quality print product and aren’t able to print that many copies. We’re putting most of our energy into the production of the print journal, and not that many people get to see it and enjoy it. Our goal is to make the work more accessible.
We’re still playing around with what our schedule for the year will look like (and) whether we should just do a digital issue (and) keep things the same but make a PDF available for download. But I’m pretty sure that we are going to go in a direction that is more integrated with the website, more of a reading experience online. That will let us have more mixed media—for example, audio recordings of our contributors reading pieces, or video projects. We’re still trying to decide if we want that to be a regular, ongoing series or mini collections of work. By March, we’re hoping to have that pinned down and roll out our version of Apogee 2.0.
Did you consider other, less costly options for continuing in print?
We have. One of the things that increases our costs is that we do visual art. If we had all black and white and just text, that would be quite a bit less expensive. But visual art has become integral to our work, and the ways that the visual media can speak to the text and vice versa. We decided that rather than reverting to black and white, we want to create a high-quality digital product.
We’re thinking of doing an anthology of work (in print). We’d have an event around that. A lot of authors we’ve published have (since) published books or have gone on to gain more attention in the literary world. It would be really fun to celebrate all those accomplishments in one place.
How do you see literary magazines continuing to engage readers?
The subscription print model seems to be in decline for smaller publications. Places where they still have affiliation with a university department—those I see continuing. They have a lot of clout and institutional backing, and they do contests and often charge a small submission fee.
I think that there will be a growth of influence of smaller online publications as well—which may have different models of sustaining themselves, like holding events or doing workshops. Winter Tangerine does an online workshop, which I think is a brilliant model. They do sessions with a workshop leader over a Google Hangout video call. They organize prompts, share work over Google Drive and comment on one another’s work.
What are some of Apogee’s biggest accomplishments so far?
The way we have been able to identify writers as they’re on an upward trajectory. I like to think that we pushed them into the spotlight. I’m thinking of the poet Danez Smith, who we published a few years ago (and) who’s now a finalist for the National Book Award for Poetry; Morgan Parker, a poet whose book is getting a lot attention; and Kaitlyn Greenidge, whose novel has been getting critical acclaim.
We received a two-year grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. That was really exciting for us, because receiving a multi-year grant indicates the organization’s ongoing belief in us—that we’ll continue for at least another year. (Laughs.)
We did an online series on the No Dakota Access Pipeline movement, which featured mostly indigenous writers, (and) we did a series on sexual violence in the literary community. Those really engaged our community. There doesn’t have to be a strict divide between the social and political conversations going on and literature. In fact, literature should—and can—be deeply engaged with these issues.
Can you give us a sneak peek of issue 10?
I’m excited about publishing Amber Atiya and Belal Mobarak. I’m really excited about our visual art. Our cover image is from multimedia artist Victoria Sin. On the cover, Victoria is dressing in drag, and it’s just a really soft, beautiful image. There’s a really great story by Jon Lewis-Katz about a shop owner in Brooklyn, from Trinidad, who’s watching the changes brought by gentrification in the neighborhood.
Do you have advice for readers who want to be published in Apogee?
We’re looking for, especially in fiction and nonfiction, attention to the subjectivity and fully dimensional characterization of minority or marginalized characters or perspectives. That’s only one part of what we’re looking for, but we do have a more particular angle in that way. The first thing we look for is: Does this fit our mission? Does it seem to engage with some social or political issue, even if it’s not an outright political statement but dealing with the nuances of identity?
Just because we haven’t accepted (your) work before does not mean we wouldn’t accept anything, so keep submitting and to various publications. A good way to get a foot in the door is to volunteer to be a reader for a publication—it doesn’t have to be the publication you’re sending work to. Having that inside view of what editors are looking for can help you be attuned to those things in your own writing.
You can read back issues of Apogee in Special Collections on Memorial Library’s ninth floor. —Sarah Lange

So last Friday, I spent an entire days worth of work creating a spreadsheet of book bloggers and reviewers. Then the next day, I separated the ones that offered a simple email address and those who have specific submission requirements.
Why did I do this?
I’m an independent publisher. I publish my own written work (and others). I did this to solicit some book reviews for one of my books.
Out of 88 bloggers, only 4 have responded so far. 🙄 This is what you’ll have to deal with when marketing your book, even if a publisher selects your manuscript. With the handy-dandy use of online tools, publishers expect you to market your own book. They have tons of authors that they’ll jump start their authors with a press release, online campaign, and maybe even a book signing, but then honestly, if you’re not paying for it, they’re on to the next project.
Why am I telling you all of this?
Because as an aspiring author, you’re going to have to solicit either your manuscript or the book itself.
Why are we always waiting for someone to validate us? Let’s just learn how to do it ourselves, OK?
You’re Gonna Learn How to Self-Publish and You’re Going to Like It! Maybe.
Whether you choose to hire someone to publish your book or you want to do it yourself, it’s still important to take the responsibility to learn much as you can about the publishing process. This way, you’re not driving your publisher crazy spending time explaining things to you while he or she can be productive working on publishing your book!

Holiday Gift Guide for on the go Families who Already own way too Much Stuff
Not Your Typical Family Holiday Gift Giving Guide
The holiday season is rapidly approaching and as our family prepares for our first Thanksgiving and Christmas in our new home, I’ve been pondering how we will manage the desire to give our kids meaningful gifts, while resisting the urge to fill every square inch of our home with unnecessary clutter.
This gift guide is not your typical Toys R Us and Black Friday catalog shopping list. **Disclosure: we don’t do Christmas lists at our home, so it’s easy for us to make giving an intentional experience. My hope is to inspire you to use the next two months to instill in your families a love for others and value time spent while creating memories.
I recognize that grandparents, aunts and uncles are well meaning in their gift giving attempts. They truly want to love of your family with gifts. The best thing that you can do to nurture that desire while still being true to your family values, is to help guide them by suggesting gifts that encourage learning, experiences, cultural or memory making opportunities.
Let’s dive into 2017′s not Your Typical Family Gift Giving Guide!
Memory Making Gifts

2. One of our family’s most memorable gifts, has been the laughter shared at an “The Original Harlem Globetrotters” game. Click here to check if they will be in your area for their upcoming season. We already know that they’re coming to Hartford in February of 2018.
3. Cooking Class: my amazingly talented friend, Celeste Borelli offers personal chef services via her website She Likes to Stir Things Up. Even if you don’t live in CT, I’m sure that you can find someone near you offering Cooking Classes, Meal Preparation and Private Parties.
4. Book a Horse Drawn Sleigh Ride: Local farms like Wood Acres Farms offer them for couples, families and group.
5. Family Portraits: One of my favorite gifts for grandparents is canvas portraits of our family. Let me explain. We live far from grandparents, great aunts/uncles, aunts/uncles, godparents and extended family and friends and there’s something touching about our parent’s response to receiving a framed or canvas picture of their grandchildren. If you wish to make this gift even more personal, schedule an extended family photo session and include your siblings and their children. This is a gift that will be valued for generations to come. If you’re in CT or have family nearby, I highly recommend Rebecca Wilhite Photography. Rebecca offers the option of mini sessions, full sessions, gift certificates and full photography services. She also participates in Gively, which is an online service that allows brides and mothers to be to register for photography related gifts rather than more stuff. What? How cool is that!
Click here to book a session or to order a gift certificate.
Limited Time Only! 82% off all premium canvas prints from CanvasOnDemand! Code: UnlimitedAFF offer ends 11/13/2017
I realize that we’re living in a digital age and that times have changed, however allow me to challenge you to at least attempt to schedule a photo session or at least grab your own camera and take pictures of your family until you get the one that best reflects your personalities. Confession time: I absolute detest mail and have actually been chastised by our mail woman for not checking our mailbox often enough. Once December 1st arrives, I rush to the mailbox daily in order to open the cards with pictures and updates from family and friends throughout the world. If time and money permit, please continue sending these cards. It sure beats all the junk mail and bills that we normally get.

I understand that it’s already November and Thanksgiving is a few weeks away. If you’re feeling pressed for time and can’t pull off a family picture session in time for the Holidays, this next suggestion is for you.
Are you ready?
Go online and order a frame of your choice. My favorites are these distressed wood frames which come in a variety of colors. Include a note inside the frame saying: This note will be replaced with a professional picture of you and all your grandchildren on (insert date). This gift will bail you out and buy you some time to schedule that portrait session.

Friday Finds || Vol. 2, Week 34
Happy friggen Friday! This is a long one, you guys… It’s been about a month since I’ve done a Friday Finds post so there’s a whole lot to share! Some EPIC podcasts to listen to… Clothes to wear now… Shoes to wear later… And some great reads, too! Enjoy. xoxo
J.Crew brought back my favorite embellished peplum top from last year in navy blue! You can see how I styled it in the photo above, but click here for the original outfit post.
A few things I personally bought this week… This phone case for my new phone (my phone got stolen two weeks ago), these $14 sunglasses (in brown tort), and this $40 handbag. // I really wanted this tortoise case, but I was in a bind and needed one that day so settled on the rattan.
Gimme gimme this dress! We’ve still got a few weeks of summer, my friends. Let’s pump the brakes on all of this fall talk, okay?!
I’m also loving this dress! It’s white, but the long sleeves make it easy to transition over the next few months. (I mean, if we *must* talk about fall…) All about that wear now, wear later element! It would be so cute with sneakers and sandals now, and booties, OTK boots, or even slouchy boots this fall.
Je Me’n Fous — I’ll help you out with the French translation on this one… It basically means, “I don’t give a f*ck.” Couldn’t press purchase fast enough!
I use the Olaplex hair treatment about once a week so I can’t wait to get my hands on the brand new shampoo and conditioner! It’s supposed to be great for dry, color-treated hair like mine.
I want this custom phone case SO BAD!
I also reallllyyyyyyyyyyyy want these red workout leggings.
How friggen cute are these leopard sneaks?
I love these strappy sandals! Great for wearing now and also transitioning into fall over the next few months.
UM HELLO SKIRT OF MY DREAMS. I need this fun, striped number in my closet! I love it paired with sneakers.
SHOP MY CLOSET — I’ve been adding a ton to my Poshmark page, and I also have a few designer items for sale, too… My pink Chanel bag, my Phillip Lim bag, and my Gucci scarf.
These leather sandals are on my wish list! I have a pair of their ballet flats and they are such great quality.
Per usual, crushing on all things Clare V. How cute is this new bag and this sweatshirt?!
Pure torture is being on very restricted shopping budget and finding the boots you’ve been lusting over the past two years on sale in your size only.
For my New York ladies — Boll & Branch is having a sample sale next weekend! I literally want to fly in. You can read about how much I love their bedding here!
I’ve seen so many rave reviews about this ice roller… I need to finally order it! (PS: Isn’t it funny how sometimes we drag our feet on a $12 purchase, but have no problem shelling out for other stuff? I find my own shopping behaviors so bizarre sometimes.)
I’m so admire Kelly for sharing her battle with depression! It’s something that so many of us deal with behind closed doors and while it’s not easy to talk about, it’s a conversation that needs to be had more often.
I just got a copy of Maxie’s book and I’m so excited to start it! Pre-order yours here… It comes out this week!
I loved this post from Mary and Laura. I’ve got a laundry list of sites to check out! — The Best Professional Resources for Women, By Women
Making a Case for Being Less Busy — Yes, yes, and yes.
I hate the word “diet,” but this is a great post about figuring out what your body needs!
I absolutely love Grace in this dress… Gorg!
This post takes me back! I had dinner at Galley Beach on Nantucket last summer on my birthday.
Carly looks so cute in this outfit!
What does work life balance even mean?
Three Ways to Be the Best Version of Yourself
THIS PODCAST EPISODE, OMG. Please, please give it a listen when you have a chance! “Your mess can be your message” was one of the quotes I tried to scribble down while driving and listening, haha. There were so many things she touched on that resonated with me on some level… family past, addiction, her own personal narrative, dating patterns based on fears, primary and secondary soulmates, relationship to failure and rejection, and more. It’s one of those episodes that I’ll definitely be listening to more than once to soak it all in. I ordered her book, Choose Wonder Over Worry, immediately upon listening to the podcast!
Speaking of Maxie, a few weeks ago she sent me this speech by Oprah and holy moly it’s good! Definitely worth a watch/listen.
My friend, Kate, has been reading her old journals on Patreon and it’s been SO FASCINATING to listen to!! I’ve been driving back and forth between Chicago and my hometown a lot these last few weeks and nothing makes the time go by faster than listening to Kate. (You can check out her regular podcast here!)
On a lighter note, I was laughing out loud listening to Jared Fried on the Girls Gotta Eat podcast!

Dogs off leash areas(PDF,49KB) Another consideration in selecting the type of confinement area is how long you may need to leave the dog alone. Anytime the puppy will be left alone for longer than he/she can control their elimination, you must provide an area for elimination. A room or collapsible pen with a paper-covered area would be needed. A cage or crate could be used for owners that do not have to leave their puppies confined for longer than 2 or 3 hours. ^ Jump up to: a b Millan 2010, p. 84. William Koehler had served as principal trainer at the War Dog Training Center, in California, and after the war became chief trainer for the Orange Empire Dog Club—at the time, the largest dog club in the United States—instructor for a number of breed clubs, and a dog trainer for the Walt Disney Studios.[18] In 1962 Koehler published The Koehler Method of Dog Training, in which he is highly critical of what he calls “tid-bit training techniques” based in “the prattle of ‘dog psychologists'”.[17] Amongst the training innovations attributed to Koehler is the use of a long line in conjunction with a complete absence of oral communication as a way of instilling attentiveness prior to any leash training. Koehler insisted that participants in his training classes used “emphatic corrections”, including leash jerks and throw chains, explaining that tentative, nagging corrections were cruel in that they caused emotional disturbance to the dog.[19] Vicki Hearne, a disciple of Koehler’s, commented on the widespread criticism of his corrections, with the explanation that it was the emotionally loaded language used in the book that led to a number of court cases, and to the book being banned in Arizona for a time.[20] Despite the controversy, his basic method forms the core of many contemporary training systems.[21] Help!
