im so cross cos i was doing really well w updating dndb on a monthly basis and then i had to take a 2 week break bc i got too excited and typed too much and too aggressively and my carpal tunnel (?)/weird wrist fuckery came back with a vengeance to ruin my life and brought a fun shoulder injury with it, so i had to not write for a few weeks to conserve my typing ability for my "job" >:( but anyways after 2 weeks of sulking and watching grey's anatomy i tried working out yesterday and i guess my body was just asking me to move or something bc the pain has gone away so!! WE'RE BACK IN BUSINESS BABY
i did then fuck up my wrist again while i was grating a courgette last night lmao but it seems to be okay as long as i have my wrist braces on so. WE'RE STILL BACK IN BUSINESS. SEND ME GOOD VIBES I WANNA UPDATE SOOOOON
#i wanna give an estimated date of when this chapter will be done but we all know i can never accurately judge how long it will take me#so we'll just go for 'as soon as i can get it done#they also reopened the library so that helps!! but it sucks now. they took away all the tables and chairs and replaced them with evil stool#to discourage people from sitting there for prolonged periods#and by 'people' i mean 'me' and also the ladies from the knitting club#but idc i will still go. i'll take my own chair and desk if i have to honestly#i need someplace to write that's free and not in my house

Pregnancy has a way of changing a woman.
When I was younger and even up until a few weeks prior, I wasn’t even sure I wanted children. I never found myself to be the motherly type – my sister made sure of that. I would watch other women out in public with their children, wondering what they were thinking for even contemplating the idea of making a human being. The world was fucked up as it is but what made them so special that they would spend the rest of their lives caring and loving another person? The stress of making sure the child grows up to be a responsible, kind adult was a daunting challenge. There were so many evils out there to keep away.
The black and white photo hung lightly between my painted fingers. July 17th was the estimated due date – right in the heart of the summer season. During the examination performed by the Volturi physician, the initial sight of our child was bizarre. It was smaller than a tennis ball at that point, curled into itself. The breaking point and the moment of realization was hearing that I was indeed pregnant by a complete and total stranger. Blood and urine tested – all positive for the hormone.
I sat in the empty waiting room, my knee bouncing up and down as nerves riddled my body. A part of me wanted to get up and leave, too afraid of the possible truth.
“Vanessa?” My name rang out as a young woman appeared from doorway. I quickly gathered my bag, giving her small smile as I followed her into the triage room.
“If you wanna set your bag down and then step on the scale for me.” I followed the directions, taking a deep breath as my flats stepped onto the object. I didn’t even bother looking at the numbers staring back at me, quickly stepping off when she gave me the go-ahead. She obtained my vitals next before the questions started. “So, you think you might be pregnant?”
I nodded my head, “Yeah- “I started. “I took a home pregnancy test and it came back positive. I just wanted to make sure that I was for sure pregnant.” I lied. I didn’t bother taking a home test after seeing the ultrasound.
“Gotcha.” She smiled. “Do you happen to know when your last period was?”
I explained to her that it was irregular to begin with and the last day of my period was a mystery at this point. She typed everything I said into the computer for the doctor to read. Once we were done in the triage section, she escorted me to the examination room, instructing me to remove my clothing for the physical exam.
I sat there awkwardly with the paper gown wrapped around my body as I waited for the doctor to come in. My phone vibrated from inside my bag, Caius’s name illuminating on the screen. I had told him that I was going out for a while but didn’t fill him in on any of the details.
A soft knock sounded on the wooden door – my back straightening as an older woman and the nurse from before walked in. She introduced herself as Dr. Bredford, shaking my hand as she took a seat in front of me.
“So- “She smiled. “From what the test results are showing, you are indeed pregnant.” Her smiled widened.
I couldn’t help but start tearing up, soon bursting into tears as the news finally became real. She congratulated me with a soft smile, passing me a box of Kleenex. “Thank you.”
She took the time to explain what would begin to happen as the pregnancy progressed. When I needed to be seen and what to watch out for that would cause alarm. She prescribed the much-needed prenatal vitamins and told me what medications to stay away from, which was a majority. She was a very kind woman – unlike the physician hired for the Volturi men.
I stared out the window of the coffee shop, my mind going in a million directions. The biggest questions being if and when I would tell Caius. I knew I had to eventually tell him, but I didn’t want Aro knowing anything about it. His quest for me to be pregnant was the only thing holding him together at this point. Marcus was dying and the need for another Volturi male was becoming increasingly important.
“Well, if it isn’t the Louisville slugger herself.” Michael stood in front of me – the remanence of my attack still present on his face. “Caius actually let you out of his site- “He paused. “Or does he even know you’ve escaped?”
He took a seat next to me, his arm slung around the back of my chair. “What do you want?” I glared, trying to remain as calm as possible.
He let out a laugh, his face inching closer to mine. “Just wanted to chat, sweetheart.” His hand coming up, reaching for the strand of hair hanging from my messy braid. I quickly shifted in the seat, pulling my body away from his. “Don’t be like that, Vanessa.” He frowned. “I just wanna be your friend.”
I let out a sigh, quickly gathering my things. He started speaking again, only this time I tuned out what he was saying, rushing to get back to the car. I knew he was hot on my tail, his expensive shoes slapping the ground behind me. I hastily entered the car, his hand grabbing the door as I was closing.
“Get away from m- “
“What’s the rush, baby doll.” He sneered. “Gotta plan what the nursery’s gonna look like? Pick out baby names, perhaps?”
My body stilled as I stared into his blue eyes, “What?”
He stepped further into the car, his pelvis pressing against the driver’s seat. “I saw you leaving the gynecologist – little sonogram pictures in your hand. Only the glow a new mommy could have written all over your pretty, little face.”
"Are you following me?"
His lips turning into a smirk, "Someone has too, sweet pea. Especially now that you're caring a bundle of joy."
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” I deflected.
He let out a sinister laugh, “I’m not stupid, darling.” His smile wide. “You’ll see that you’re with the wrong man. Just because he’s only hit you a few times doesn’t mean it’s gonna get any better. Should’ve looked up his rap sheet before committing to those vowels or spoke with one of the downtown girls – they’ll tell you how he really is.” I remained silent, staring straight ahead. “What would it take for you to just leave him – right now – no questions asked? What would I have to do for that to happen?”
I slowly turned my head, our eyes connecting. “Drop dead.” My voice low.
His eyes squinted as he slowly backed up allowing me to pull and lock the door. Just as fast as I started it, I reversed out of my spot, racing back to the house…
I spent the rest of my day piddling around the house. Caius was busy with “business”, tending to whatever Aro needed. Ever since Marcus’s accident, Aro had appointed his nephew to take the vacant spot. Caius was working more, dealing with the business doings that Marcus seemed to handle when needed. There were times when I wouldn’t see him all day, only feeling his body dip into the bed late into the night. By morning, he would be gone for another long day. As the days and weeks passed, I kept my feelings to myself – the pregnancy hormones starting to come into play as certain things triggered them. My stomach was slowly growing as I kept google searches of nursery ideas and the list of possible names hidden on my locked phone. I also kept the interaction I had with Michael a deep secret as well. I could have told Caius that day what had happened but then he would find out about the baby and be even more pissed that I allowed him to get so close.
“Hungry darling?” I looked up as Charlotte walked into the kitchen. Her bright smile casting more light into the already sunny room.
I cleared my throat, the remanence of the toast I made earlier still active on my tastebuds. “Oh no thanks, I had some toast and bacon earlier.
She nodded her head as she moved around the room. “You must’ve gotten up with the chickens this morning.”
She was right. I hadn’t been sleeping the best lately and my hunger cravings were getting the better of me. There would be times where I would just wake up in the middle of the night and sneak into the kitchen, finishing off whatever ice cream or dessert item I could find. Then, I would be paying the price of that snack as I leaned over the toilet seat. Caius would wake up here and there, finding my spot vacant, questing my whereabouts when I finally returned to bed.
“I think it was around five or so.” I spoke. “I couldn’t sleep, and I was hungry.”
“Those cravings can get the best of us, deary.” She smiled. “The little ones like sugary treats.” My body stilled as her words filtered through my brain. She moved closer to me, taking my hand in her aging one. “I can tell just by looking at your sweetheart. I’ve been through it, and I’ve been around enough women to know the look.”
I could feel tears forming in my eyes as she looked at me warmly. “Caius doesn’t know. I don’t know how or when to tell him and then there’s Aro- “
“You don’t worry about Aro.” She interjected. “Caius is the one and only man that needs to know about the baby. What happens and what is told between you and Caius in the privacy of your relationship is all that matters. Aro has no say in anyway in the life of that baby.”
I wiped away the tears, “He’s just been pressuring me about giving the family an heir and here I am- “I sighed. “I don’t want my child anywhere near him.” I whispered the last part.
Charlotte’s arms wrapped around my shoulders, pulling me into her warm body. I instantly broke down as her arms grew tighter. It was a comforting hug- a hug that I needed at that point. Everything that I was worried about flowed as the tears fell on her shoulders.
She slowly pulled away moments later, her hands resting on my upper arms. “You listen to me- “She spoke sterner. “You just take care of yourself and that baby. Whatever Aro has said in the past is just that and you worrying about his words are not good for you or that child. Yes, that child will be the heir of this family, but you will always be the mother of that child. You get the ultimate say in what you want and don’t want – And if you don’t want that child following in their father’s footsteps, you have that right.”

The Neighbors Son
Martha chuckled as you sat at her kitchen table grumbling over the papers in front of you.
"You do you lot have to do things so weird?! What the hell is this shit ?And what the fuck does that word even mean. Its not a word that's the fucking alphabet in the wrong order! THEY MADE UP NEW WORDS Martha can you take me out back and shoot me please? At this point I think that's my only option" You grunted resting your head on the table. Martha sighed rolling her eyes at your dramatic display you felt her slip the paper from underneath your head.
"Just whats gotten you so work up now girl..... Health insurance? Well its about damn time! You've been here four months .....I can see why this can seem difficult." She scanned the documents and slapped the side of your head making you sit up.
"Come on up, right this one is the best value but doesn't cover dental or opticians, so you have to pay for them, but it covers illness and emergancey care, if you choose the next one up you’ll get that and it also covers for maternity care." She pointed out the different options, you knew that you’d been lucky in England to have the nhs but until now you didn't know just how lucky.
"Can I upgrade? Like at a later date if I wanna have a one?" The older woman scanned the documents.
"Yes but you wont be able to claim anything for prenatal or maternity for at least six months after adding it to the policy." You nodded you didn't really see yourself accidentally falling pregnant for that you'd need to have sex and you've been on a dry spell since being here. You nodded taking the paper from her."So I will just do that then" you said wanting it over and done with she sighed at you crossing her arms giving you 'the look' that every woman got when she became a mother."How many have you looked at?" You shrunk under her stern gaze and rubbed the back of your neck nervously.
"Errr so far? In total? One" she sighed shaking her head at you, before pouring you both another coffee setting it in front of you,she hadn't realized how lonley she had been once the farm house across the field had been empty not until you had moved in, all the way from England you had bought the house with your inheritance selling most of the fields to others in the area just keeping a small two acres around the house for yourself. She had met you the day you moved in coming over to introduce herself see if you needed help, you both instantly hit it off and it wasn't long before she was looking out for you. It was hard for you to adjust to life here, loosing your dad was bad but she then found out that your mother had caused major problems practically chasing you out of the country, the woman had been unhappy with the will and wanted her 'half' tho it wasn't millions it was enough for you to live comfortably in the end you'd had to move as she kept coming around to the house causing problems and harassing you for money, you'd had to get away far away so settled in Kansas. It was different but a welcome change, slower and laid back sure sometimes you missed not being in the Hustle and bustle but you had everything you need, a comfy house ,decent car and an income from your books, you was an author writing adult books, tales of gorgeous cowboys, dominant business men and mafia king pin's all falling in love with the women of their dreams with erotic twists and scenes that would make a porn star blush. Martha had been a huge help since you got here ,she had taken you under her wing watching over you and you'd become fast friends, always finding yourselves at each others houses helping each other out. You groaned as she shook her head at you knowing the look. There was a lecture coming.
"That’s just silly, you should look around compare prices and policies, it could save you a lot of money in the long run, especially you i mean your a trouble magnet how you haven't already ended up in ER I don't know?" You smiled sweetly at her
"Because a have a kind and loving neighbor to patch me up" you said casting a look to the scar on your arm where she had sewed you up after a nasty fall on some farming equipment in the barn. She huffed at you rolling her eyes kids. And you was a kid only twenty seven years old younger then her Clark, sometimes she asked you why you don't go into town and meet some people your age you'd always cringe and shiver saying that they were to immature or just banged on about marriage and kids, which neither interested you in the slightest you were quite happy with things the way they were. Martha looked up as the dog perked up outside whining and yipping happily before she heard him
"Ma? You here?" She smiled as he entered the house wrapping her up in his arms she hugged him back.
"Clark? What are you doing here?" She pulled back a little seeing him upset she cupped his face.
"Oh god whats wrong? Is everything okay? Whats happened?"
"Its Lois...we had an argument I had to leave her Ma, its over she couldn't see past the super-" Martha quickly shushed him as You stood awkwardly thinking it better to leave not wanting to intrude. The man snapped his head in your direction releasing his mum and you were floored he was stunning, sure she had showed you photos of her son but they didn't do any justice. Tall broad and strong his biceps were fucking huge his chest tapered into a perfect v, dark hair hanging in messy curls atop his head some falling forward just skimming his eyes that were a glistening bright blue you felt your pussy clench violently. Fuck. You was so lost that you failed to notice him staring right back at you it was Martha clearing her throat that snapped you both out of what ever trance you'd both been put you under.
"Cheers for the coffee but I should get back and leave two to catch up, anyway this next chapter isn't gonna write itself..... at this point I don't think I’m gonna write it either." You said with a chuckle Martha turned to you putting her hands on her hips.
"Oh no you don't, your going park you butt right there and stay here to search other quotes" you gaped at her looking to her son he held up his hands staying out of it.
"Don't you go looking to him,he wont help you" you huffed crossing your arms
"Did you just give me homework? It sounds like you gave me home work." She nodded
"Damn right, health insurance is a big deal and you don't just pick the first one that pop's up on the internet" you pouted at her trying to change her mind she just stared you down tilting her head then you threw your hands up.
"Oh for fuck sake, fine I will look Jesus Christ" she nodded smiling not missing the way you and Clark was stealing glances at one another, well you stole glances Clark was out right staring. She slapped him upside the head.
"Don’t be rude son introduce yourself" he stuttered shyly flushing at being scolded before holding out a hand towards you quickly.
"Er Clark Kent nice to meet you Mrs?" You took his hand not surprised by how warm it was I mean this guy was hot, it only made sense right?.
"Miss Y/n Y/L/N but just call me Y/n everyone does....apart from your mum she calls me 'a pain in the ass'" he chuckled
"Then we already have something in common" you laughed as Martha motioned for you both to sit at the table smiling knowingly, she saw how Clark couldn't look away how the sorrow in his eyes disappeared as he looked at you. Clark couldn't tear his eyes away from you he gulped eyes raking over your form his mouth gone dry speechless. Wow. You was very attractive like you walked out of one of his fantasies, a tiny homely looking girl light tan with deep chocolate wavy hair in a short bob twisted in a half up do, tiny bun in the back with a few loose strands framing your small face that had a dusting of freckles from being out in the sun, tho he guessed that some were more permanent as they didn'tstop on your face trailing down into you blouse, his breathing hitched as his eyes couldn't help peeking seeing the tops of you breasts spilling over the cups of your bra as you slouched over the table barely resting your elbow on it due to how small you was. His cock twitched you were very tiny the top of your head didn't even reach the top of his chest, he estimated you to be around four foot nine maybe four foot ten he grunted a little, he did have a thing for smaller women, he loved that he towered over average sized women but you were like his dream girl, fuck if he didn't want to fold you in half and fuck you senseless. His pants tightened at the thought, he bet you'd struggle to take him but given the chance he would find a way to impale you forcing your little body to take every punishing inch he grunted a quietly his stomach clenching. He quickly pulled his eyes away before either you would notice trying to calm his slightly ragged breaths this wasn't like him at all, he had been raised a gentleman but sitting here he felt anything but. Drawing his eyes up to yours. Incredible, he got many compliments for his eye but yours were something else, one a light brown honey colour the other was the brightest green he had ever seen, like someone had captured an emerald with in it, he swallowed dryly again becoming hot under the collar twitching in his pants as he continued to assess you. He wasn't sure what you was doing in his Mothers house but he had no complaints whatsoever.
"S-so Y/n your not from around here." his voice cracked a little as he spoke you shook your head at him a little uncomfortable as Martha pottered about the kitchen busying herself with making a fresh pot of coffee, you moved to help her but she just shook her head at you.
"No I moved here four months ago from England, your mum has been helping me get settled, America is a lot weirder than I had initially thought" you giggled a little nervously crossing your legs trying to fight off the building tension between your thighs, it wasn't every day you sat across for a delicious looking male, already picturing him as the main character in your next book with the amount of fantasies you were sure to come you'd probably have enough material for a whole series. He grit his teeth a little as his cock jumped at the melodious sound of your voice and thick southern British accent, he wouldn't admit but your voice had now become his favorite sound of all, imagining just how high he could get it if you ever gave him a chance.
"Wow that’s pretty far, and you chose Smallville why not one of the big cities?" He asked as Martha walked across the kitchen washing up some dishes in the sink, you frowned she never did that when you was here, she was up to something.
"Well Gotham didn't look to promising and I couldn't find anything in metropolis, I didn't have much time to move and when I saw the farm house I thought why not and bought it now I'm just across the field from your mum. I might get a small place in the city at some point but right now I'm quite happy here"
"You haven't even been to metropolis yet and your already thinking of buying a place there? shouldn't you check it out first? Maybe you could show her around when she does visit Clark? Take her to see the sights she'd like that? Wouldn't you y/n?" Your jaw sort of hung open....was she trying to set you up with her son? You chuckled nervously seeing the smirk on the other woman face.
"Oh Martha he's probably busy-"
"No! No I'm not, I'm not busy at all!.....I-I mean sure I could to show you around." He interrupted you then flushed, Martha shook her head the boy wouldn't know sublty if it bit him on the ass. You blushed sipping more of your coffee.
"Well if your sure... but I need to finish my book I've already postponed the release date once, don't think the publisher will like another one" he smiled as his mother set down a cup and fresh coffee pot he refilled everyone's cups as she took a seat at the head of the table sitting back watching you both fumble around your words blushing and stuttering, there was definitely something going on here and she was a little smug and had a feeling she was going to enjoy this next bit.
"Your a writer? What do you write?" You blushed bright at his question. Oh shit.
"Haha Yeah, well I sort of write books, fiction"
"I don't think I've heard of you tho?" you looked down going beet red your pussy dampening your panties at the idea of him lying back in his bed reading one of your raunchy books.
"I use an alias so I don't get any backlash" he looked a little surprised but it wasn't uncommon even some journalists did this mostly if the do honest reviews of shops and services
"Oh so what type of fiction do you write children's books?" You flushed more at his innocence looking to Martha who was snickering quietly to herself. She was going to be no help here whatsoever.
"No..Not children's books...My stuff is more...Mature" you desperately looked to Martha eyes screaming. Help me!. poor Clark tilted his head a little not understanding why you seemed to be getting so embarrassed
"Oh for teens then?" his mother finally cracked up laughing out right at the face you pulled at him deciding to put an end to to sorry affair, it was painful to watch.
"Oh for god-She writes porn Clark! Erotica, Adult fantasies" Clark spat his coffee not ready for that at all, coughing and spluttering, you got up quickly just dodging the drink sprayed in your direction.
"MARTHA!..Oh shit are you okay big guy?" Patting to poor mans back as Martha sat there sipping her coffee smirking into her cup.
"What? Like I'm wrong? we'd be here all day if I'd let that pan out" You flushed at her words as he finally caught his breath before you sat back down and sunk in your seat mortified she just came out and said it.
"Ah okay then wow I didn't expect that....I mean you look so cute...Not that I don't think you can be sexy and cute cos you are shit I mean er what do I mean?...Its just not what I'd have thought you'd write....But there's nothing wrong with that, I imagine its quite hard NO!no not hard...Not that its easy that's not what I meant just that it would be hard-Difficult! difficult it would be difficult to write." Martha laughed out loud having the time of her life as you both flushed bright red, Clark was trying to talk himself out of his own embarrassment, you on the other hand just Blinked at him as he had a melt down so red he looked like his head was going to pop, finally taking pity on him you interrupted his babbling.
"Its okay...I get what you mean...Sometimes its... Difficult but you just you know keep at it..." Martha smiled oh yes you two definitely liked each other, now if only she could find a way to set you up together. An awkward silence fell over the kitchen as you fiddled with your cup a little and Clark trying to look anywhere but you failing miserably, she decided to have some mercy and change the subject and let you know that he was available all at once.
"So you and Lois are over for good this time?" You leaned back in your seat watching his face drop you couldn't help feel sorry for him.
"Yeah, she just kept pushing, wanting me to be someone I'm not, to play that part all the time I'm sick of it! it started got to the point I no longer had any choice, I'd do what ever for a quiet life even if it made me unhappy" Martha sighed at him she had seen this coming for a long time but had to step back and let him figure it out for himself.
"Clark I'm sorry things didn't work out I really am but she would never be satisfied until everything went her way you knew that"he nodded solemnly sighing you could tell who ever this Lois was had meant the world to him.
"I think I knew deep down she wasn't the one, I just thought if I carried on, if I stuck with it she would see how it was effecting me and change just a little for my sake. Just like I did for her you know?"
"She was never going to son, in her eyes you had become what she wanted so she didn't have to change at all but she forgot the most important thing in a relationship that's its give and take she forgot to be what you needed" Martha held his hand he sighed looking at her nodding.
"Well this happened just over three weeks ago and she is still carrying on like we are together, like nothings changed! showing up at my apartment when she feels like it and throwing a fit when i don't let her in and is telling everyone I'm her date to this party now I'm stuck, I don't want to go with her but if I go alone then she's going corner me." he sounded exhausted and fed up and slightly bitter towards this woman and with good reason you knew how this type of thing could were on someone, you'd seen it first hand growing up.
"Party? what Party?" he waved his hand at his Mothers question
"A staff party celebrating another award and I don't want to go alone, if I do I know I will end up going back to her I really don't want to. So need to find someone else but there is no one shes still letting everyone think we're together! and none of them want to be on her bad side. I just need a woman to pretend to be my girlfriend for one night"
"Now Clark that's not fair on whoever you take, your a handsome boy and anyone you take might really like you it could crush them if they find out your using them. You can't use one women to prove a point to your ex it isnt right your father and I raised you better then that." You interrupted before she could lay into him anymore.
"I can understand what he is getting at tho, sorry to interrupt and if I'm being out of line tell me, but she sounds like my Mother, relationships are give and take, you can't just take and take and expect your other half to put up with it, Clark if you need someone to go with you to make it clear your finished with her I will go with you, no strings attached or hard feelings but women who think everything should revolve and change around them and their needs really fucks me off!! especially when they pull that shit on a sweet genuine person, in the end these women just destroy the men their with. I don't know you very well but Martha raised you so you can't be that bad and that's enough for me." You hissed some of the words it was like your parents all over again. Your mother was spoilt and selfish always demanding that your father change the way he was for her, you had watched as he had given up everything for her but it was never enough, he had to play a part and it ate away at him for years sending him into a deep depression, yet she never did anything in return or tried to help him. In the end, you at seven years old had found him trying to commit suicide. The thought of you being the one to find his body was what broke the camel's back he threw her out the next day then tried divorcing her but she wouldn't sign the papers so instead they remained separated she had nothing so you was left in your dads care, he was happier then ever but the damage had been done he never found anyone else, she hung around every few months trying to weasel her way back in missing the money more than her family, when she didn't get her way she tried to destroy any happiness he found. Luckily he had sense enough to rewrite his will and piddle away the money in the account he had left to her his final fuck you to her was when the executor of the will read out that you was left with the car, house and just over seven hundred and eighty thousand pounds the housekeeper Susanna was left the holiday home in Devon and forty thousand pounds and your mother well she got twenty nine pound sixty seven pence and was aloud to have the expensive china that the Susanna had been instructed to smash after his passing....Yeah your dad was a bastard but it was funny as fuck. That’s why you had to leave she kept coming to the house harassing you for money. The restraining order hadn't worked so you decided to move you had the means to do it so went for it, she would never find you here and couldn't use the fact shes your mother to find you because you wasn't a minor the cherry on top the account that your dad was leaving for your mother was what he used to pay for your college and university. Martha sighed knowing why you got so wound up and you was right Lois was similar to your mother.
"You'd do that? Really?" You nodded to him smiling
"Absolutely I ain't afraid of no American.... apart from your mum shes scary as fuck, but seriously I can handle anything she tries to throw at me and you can show me around town while your at it, I'm guessing its in metropolis? when is it?" Martha sat back a little stumped turns out she wont have to set you two up after all.
"Err Its this Saturday ,you sure you want to come what about your book?" you waved him off
"Its fine Clark I can bring my laptop and work on it in the hotel" he nodded grinning wide suddenly excited about this next week then faltered.
"Don't bother booking a hotel you can stay with me for the week after all your doing me a huge favor its the least I can do to repay you" he chose to ignore his mothers raised brow. She had a few guesses at exactly how he was planning to pay you back and she doubted it was just going to be bed and breakfast.... probably breakfast in bed if the looks he gave you were anything to go by, not that she minded you would be a better fit for him anyway. Call it mothers intuition but she got the feeling that Clark would be around a little more now that you were just across the field.
"Oh no I couldn't! a hotel would be fine"
"I insist I would love nothing more then to have you to myself for the week" Martha tried to bite back a laugh, she never realized how cheesy her son was trying to flirt, no wonder he didn't have much success but she could see you fall for it hook line and sinker as you flushed squirming in your seat a little, he smirked at you from across the table getting more confident, he liked to think that he had already caught you. Prick he new exactly what he was doing as he leaned back man spreading, making your walls clench.
"You could spend the week ,we can catch a train tomorrow afternoon if you like, be back in time for dinner there's a nice diner near my apartment" you nodded a little suddenly feeling like one of the women in your books flustered heart racing a mile a minute as the man of your dreams offers to take you away from the boring daily routine. The question was were you brave enough to follow through with it, hell you'd moved to the other side of the world on a snap decision, spending a week alone with a drop dead gorgeous man should be a breeze, it didn't take long to decide giving him a shy smile nodding as you had butterflies in your tummy. His face lit up
"Great I will check the train times It's Sunday service but there should still be some in the afternoon"
"Perfect! I should go and pack then I suppose,Martha if I leave a key here could you watch the house for me and feed the fish when I'm gone" she nodded quickly excited but anxious at the same time, hoping that you would hit it off with Clark but at the same time apprehensive about how fast you was going, after all you only just met, but you were both adults and could handle yourselves and she knew you'd be safe with him.
"Oh is it formal or what?"
"Oh yes, its theme is Hollywood glam"
"Oooo I've got the perfect dress, any way I'm off and will see you both tomorrow be back around eleven tomorrow morning?" he stood nodding walking you to the door making you swoon inside as he opened the door above you reminding you just how big he was, a gentle giant.
"I-I'll see you tomorrow then Clark" he leaned down to your ear whispering
"Can't wait, sweet dream's Y/n I know mine will be" you gasped as he pulled away winking chuckling at your hot cheeks, he could have a lot of fun making you blush he decided as you turned quickly scampering down the stairs away from the house towards yours, who's roof you could barely see over the crops from this distance. He stayed there leaning on the door frame arms crossed groaning watching your ass sway as you made your way into the brakes in the crops what the tractors used to get across the field disappearing into the high crops.
"So you like her then?" he jumped back bumping into the door frame making it creak a little at his mothers sudden appearance, she giggled folding the tea towel in her hands.
"Wow you must have taken a shine to her if your so mesmerized by her or more specifically her backside, that I can sneak up on you,I haven't been able to do that since you were a little boy." he chuckled embarrassed that she'd caught him staring
"Not that I think you would but Clark? don't play with her feelings okay? shes a good kid and had it tough over the past few years and she doesn't need a heart break on top of everything else" he snapped his head to his mom.
"Ma you know I wouldn't-" she fixed him with a look
"You just admitted in there that you was going to use some poor girl to make a point to Lois and I'm telling you now if you hurt her I wont be impressed"
"I wouldn't do that to her, I wont hurt her I promise, but I would like to get to know her more...see if we could you know" she smiled softly at him
"I'm just saying your a handsome man and she could fall for you easily, don't use her as a rebound." he sighed she had a point but after seeing you all thoughts of Lois died.
"I like her Ma do you-do you think maybe she could like me to? this time have a relationship with me, get to know Clark Kent before Superman? that Clark could be enough this time?" that made her pause clenching the cloth in her hands twisting it, there was something in the way he said that, so unsure and hopeless she fumed inside his confidence was knocked she felt like she was speaking to the shy beaten down preteen he once was. He truly believed that Clark Kent wasn't good enough anymore and there was only one person to blame for that,it was with those words she realized that Lois had hurt him and hurt him bad, she sighed pulling him down kissing his cheek then cupped his cheeks making him look her in the eye.
"Now you listen to me and you listen well. You are good enough and you are loved, I don't know what Lois has put into your head, and for her safety I don't think I should know, but you forget it right this instant! you hear me?" he nodded a little still unsure as Martha searched his eyes for a little glimmer of confidence but her heart clenched when she couldn't find any, that confidence from earlier must have been false bravado. Lois was lucky she wasn't going to metropolis herself she's probably kill her for hurting her baby, tho she's sure Y/n was going to rip her apart in her stead it was a pity she wouldn't be there to see it.
"I think Y/n is already smitten with you and that you'd be good for one another. I've only known her four months but She doesn't try to be anything she's not, she takes people as she sees them and doesn't have time for all the games other women play its why we get along so well. And as a side note she has never reacted like that to any one else's attempts at flirting trust me there have been quite a few try when we've been out and she shut them down....Quite brutally now that I think of it. But if your serious about her give it your all I don't think you will be disappointed I think you'd be a good match." she wiped under his eye as they welled a little with unshed tears.
"Y-you really think she could like me?" he asked in a small voice.
"There’s no doubt in my mind that she already does, you think she'd agree to spend a week with you if she didn't? Honestly if you both hadn't made plans I was going to play matchmaker myself. Now why don't you go have a cold shower? and I can start on dinner"
"Cold shower?"
"You think I haven't notice your problem?" he flushed laughing wiping at his eyes and pulling his top down a little trying to cover the tent in his pants as she walked back into the house patting his back.
"Oh shit! You think she notice to?!" his mother laughed shrugging
"Who knows I mean she was checking you out to" as she entered the kitchen he stood there dumbfounded
"What Are you sure? I didn't notice"
"You wouldn't your a man, now go have a shower you are not eating at the table like that" he groaned shaking his head closing the front door making his way up the stairs to the bathroom.

drawing new lines, chapter seven (branjie) - holtzmanns
AN: So…normally I’m a bit more on the ball with submitting to aq. Oops? This is chapter seven, but here’s the link to all the chapters in between. Most of you have been reading this story on ao3, too, so thank you so, so much for all the love and support for this fic. I appreciate every single message and they make me so happy. So, thank you. As usual, Writ continues to be the best beta and friend one could ask for.
(read on ao3) | word count: 3730 | tumblr: plastiquetiaras
“Here.” A’keria slams the burrito bowl down in front of Vanessa, and she can’t help but let out a delighted squeak.
“God, I could get used to not having to pack my lunch. This month is gonna be lit.”
“Don’t get too used to it.” A’keria snorts as she mixes up her own bowl. “It’s only for a month, as the bet specified.”
“Hey, I don’t care.” Vanessa’s voice is muffled as she tries to talk with a spoonful of the sweet, sweet rice, salsa, beans, chicken and vegetables in her mouth, but it’s hard. “Imma enjoy it.”
“Good, cause you earned it. Top ten things in my life that I didn’t need to see - you and Brooke practically fucking on the dance floor. Nasty hoes.” A’keria makes a face, and Vanessa grins right back at her while Silky snickers.
“You just jealous you ain’t got a blonde skyscraper on your arm.” Part of Vanessa still can’t believe it, really. That Brooke’s willing to do this with her. Not that she’s complaining in the least.
A’keria flips her hair over her shoulder. “I got my man, that’s all I need.”
“He’d rock a blond look though, I ain’t gonna lie.” Silky’s statement makes Vanessa pause, try to picture it.
“You’re right Silk, he totally would.”
“Enough about my non blond man.” A’keria takes another bite of her own burrito bowl before handing it to Silky to share. “What do you want for tomorrow’s lunch?”
Vanessa has to stop herself from practically rubbing her hands together with glee. “Lord almighty, I did not realize how great having my food brought to me would be. Pizza? Poutine? Gimme that unhealthy shit.”
Silky lets out a whistle. “Damn Vanj, you ain’t gonna try and look good for your girl?”
“It’s called happy relationship weight. Imma get it, cause I’m happy. And in a relationship, and she thinks I look good anyway.” As if Vanessa actually is in one. But hey, why not? She’s allowed to enjoy poutine.
“Brooke looks like she can lift you up with one hand, anyway.” A’keria’s tone is almost envious. Which is understandably, really, because her boyfriend is on the scrawny side.
“Damn, I should get her to try that. Do you think she would?” Vanessa remembers when she’d been dating Kameron, who’d brought her to the gym often. Kameron had picked her up once and done squats at the same time, and Vanessa would be lying if she said it hadn’t been fucking hot.
“You know her better than we do, Vanj. If she’d let you be a human barbell, go for it.” Silky shrugs. “I ain’t getting anyone to lift me anytime soon.”
“Imma go find her. Share some of this burrito bowl, ‘cause it’s technically her victory, too. Not that she knows about the bet.” Vanessa stands up, packing the burrito bowl up once more. It’s a bold faced lie, because Brooke does know, though Silky and A’keria don’t need to know that.
Brooke’s on the phone in her office when Vanessa pops by, the fingers of one of her hands pressing against her temple. She looks up, gives a small smile before turning back to the papers on her desk and ripping the person on the other end of the line a new one.
“No, we can’t use the support beams from the other manufacturer. I don’t care if it’s going to lower costs - it’s not going to matter if the structures collapse in five years because of faulty material and we’re the ones who get sued. So, save it.”
Vanessa plops down in the seat across from Brooke’s desk as quietly as she can, her eyes transfixed on Brooke. It’s kinda hot - Brooke yelling at someone on the other end of the line while completely maintaining composure. Not that Vanessa would ever admit it to her.
“You need to liaise with the first company again, because they’re the ones that have been working well this whole time. I need the estimate from them by tomorrow.” With that, Brooke slams the phone down, letting out a sigh. She shoots a small smile towards Vanessa. “Hey.”
Vanessa holds up the bowl. “Brought you some lunch, ‘cause I know your overworked ass ain’t eating.”
“I had a protein bar-”
“Rabbit food doesn’t count.” Vanessa pulls out the extra set of cutlery, lays it out for Brooke. She’s already had enough of the bowl, and Brooke looks tired enough that she needs as much as she can get.
Brooke raises an eyebrow. “Isn’t rabbit food supposed to be what people call vegetables?”
“You telling me any sane human is gonna eat a protein bar for sustenance?” Vanessa can’t even picture having them on the regular, so tasteless and quite unlike the chewy bars of her childhood.
“Are you calling me nuts?” Brooke’s finally smiling, and it makes Vanessa’s heart grow when she sees it. She hates seeing how tired Brooke’s job makes her.
“Remember, you took us to a spin class for a date.” Of course, Vanessa had enjoyed the shit out of it, but she’s not gonna mention that to Brooke.
“I distinctly remember you having a great time.”
“Maybe.”
“Did you eat half of this already?” Brooke holds back a laugh when she takes her first spoonful, looking down at the already picked-over bowl.
“Hey, I was hungry.” Vanessa shrugs. “Plus, this is the start of the free food A’keria is giving me for the bet. Figured I’d share it with my partner in crime.”
“Well, that was very sweet of you.” Brooke’s voice is muffled by her bite, and the contrast is adorable from her blazer and the smell of her expensive perfume.
Brooke’s an enigma, a person with so many facets that Vanessa is relishing in the chance to discover. The fact that Brooke’s willing to open up to her more and more is Vanessa’s favourite part of the bet, mostly because she’s an open book herself. Because what people see with her is what they get.
“Gotta make sure you don’t waste away on me while yelling at your minions.” Vanessa snickers when Brooke makes a face at her.
“They’re not minions. Just people who should know how to do their jobs.” Brooke sighs, gathering the papers on her desk and pushing them to the side. “Don’t go into management. The title isn’t worth it.”
“Can you imagine me trying to get people to do shit? It would be a whole lotta yelling.” Vanessa tries to picture herself at a desk like Brooke’s, having to spearhead projects and be responsible for them. At least she’d get to wear a power suit.
“You’d be good at it, though. You have charisma, the kind that most people don’t and the kind that can’t be bought.” Brooke takes another bite of the bowl. “Dang, this is good.”
Vanessa raises a skeptical brow. “What do you mean, charisma?” She’s just her natural dumbass self, which pays off sometimes.
“I mean, you convinced me to fake date you thirty or so seconds after introducing yourself. I’d say that’s pretty impressive.”
Vanessa snickers as she leans back in her seat, resisting the urge to lift her feet up onto the chair. “True.”
It’s funny to think back to that day months ago, when Vanessa had barged into Brooke’s office, convinced she’d be able to get her to agree with no evidence to back her up aside from sheer dumb confidence. Though it had worked by some miracle, something that still surprises Vanessa every now and then - and she’s sure that it’s the same for Brooke, too.
Brooke lets out a contented sigh when she finishes the bowl, pushing it away from her on the desk. “So, are you going to share all of your lunches with me from now on?”
Vanessa doesn’t miss a beat. “Why, Miss Hytes, are you asking me to lunch for the next twenty nine days?”
Brooke rolls her eyes, but grins nonetheless. “Only if the food is good.”
“You can bet on that.”
Brooke really, really doesn’t want to go out.
It’s a Friday, she’s had a long week. Really, all she wants to do is curl up on the couch with her cats.
But Nina’s birthday only comes once a year, and she’s a good friend, and so she has to choose a dress from her closet even though pyjamas sound like an infinitely comfier option right now.
The buzzing from her phone on her bed distracts her from her closet dilemma, and so she hangs the dresses in her arms back up in favour of checking her texts.
VVM: Kahanna is singing along to the radio
VVM: AND RILEY IS DUETING WITH HER
VVM: we bout to get complaints from the neighbours at any moment but this shit is hilarious
BLH: Omg. Send me a video
The resulting video from Vanessa makes Brooke crack up, because Riley’s spinning around and howling in the same key as Kahanna is singing. The best part of the video though, is the shaky quality of it, because Vanessa seems to be giggling too hard while filming to hold the camera straight.
BLH: These two need Grammys
VVM: RIGHT! IM SAYIN
VVM: I wanna join in but I’m afraid of ruining it
VVM: anyways how’s your evening going, blondie?
BLH: Trying to choose an outfit. Nina’s birthday and she wants to go clubbing, as if we’re not too old.
VVM: speak for yourself, grandma, some of us are still young
VVM: that being said, you’re not too old for clubbing at all
VVM: show me some of those outfits
BLH: Like, take pictures of them?
VVM: yeah
VVM: better yet, facetime me
It seems like as good of an option as any. Maybe Vanessa can help her decide.
Vanessa picks up the call on the first ring, Riley’s singing reverberating loud and clear in the background. “Hold up, lemme go to my room and close the door. These opera singers be too fucking loud.”
Brooke watches as Vanessa falls back onto her bed, her hair fanning out all around her. “There. Much more comfy. Now, show me some outfit options.”
“Let me prop my phone up on my dresser, hold on.” Brooke leans it carefully so that she can get a clear, hands free shot of herself, and gives a little wave to the camera.
Vanessa giggles on the other end of the line. “Hi to you too, you dork.”
“Okay, help me decide, I’m stuck. Mostly ‘cause I don’t wanna go.” Brooke pulls out a couple dresses and lays them on her bed. “I guess I’ll just hold them up one at a time, or something?”
“Nuh uh. You gotta try them on, give me the full fantasy.” Vanessa snuggles further into her pillows on screen, and it makes Brooke raise an eyebrow.
“Really?”
“Mhmm.”
“Fine.” Maybe it’ll be fun, help Brooke decide a little better.
She pulls out a blazer dress, steps out of the frame to try it on. When she comes back, Vanessa is nodding appreciatively.
“Okay, I could get into this. Suits you.”
“Yeah?” Brooke faces the screen, turns a little so she can see her back. “I dunno if I wanna wear long sleeves tonight, though.”
“Clubs do get warm.” Vanessa shrugs. “What other options you got?”
“How about this?” Brooke steps back in front of the screen after shimmying into her knee length, floral form fitting dress, one which she doesn’t pull out often because of how long it takes to take off when she has to pee. But it feels like a good option.
“Woah.” Brooke’s almost not sure if she hears the words or not, but Vanessa’s eyes are wide as she shuffles closer to the screen, and Brooke has to bite back a smirk.
“Yeah?” Brooke puts her hands on her waist, turns slightly so that Vanessa can see what it looks like from the back. She knows what she’s doing.
It works, from the way Vanessa gulps.
Brooke knows that the two of them have chemistry. She hasn’t forgotten the holiday party, hasn’t forgotten the way it felt to have Vanessa gasping into her mouth. The way Vanessa had pulled her closer, the way Brooke hadn’t stopped wanting to kiss her, either.
Well. They’re not actually together. But it’s nice to know she has chemistry with her fake girlfriend, at least. Sells the fantasy.
Because that’s what this is about - being believable.
That’s it.
Right?
The club is a lot more boring to Brooke when she doesn’t feel like dancing with anyone.
It’s too sweaty, that’s why. The club feels like it’s a million degrees, and adding dancing to the mix will only make it worse. Heck, Brooke’s sitting at the bar in front of a fan that is directly blowing cool air at her, and she’s still sweating like crazy.
That’s why she doesn’t want to dance.
All of Brooke’s friends are on the dance floor with their respective partners - save for Courtney, who’s found a girl for herself to make out with in the corner of the club. Brooke can’t help but feel…bored. Why dance anyway, when it’s too warm and sweaty and crowded? Why talk up a girl when-
When she has Vanessa?
Technically, Brooke doesn’t have Vanessa. They’re not dating. She has to remember that.
But they did sign a contract together, saying that they won’t mess around with others while doing this. Yes, that’s why Brooke is staying away from chatting up nearby girls. Because she has a commitment to keep. Not that she really wants to talk to other girls in the first place. But her gin and tonic is nearly done and she needs another if she’s going to be at this bar for any longer, so she signals to the bartender and opens up her phone while she waits.
BLH: Help, the club is boring
BLH: I’m wasting away at the bar
VVM: omg
VVM: go dance, you’re at a club
BLH: I don’t wanna
BLH: Stinky guys
VVM: stinky, huh?
BLH: You need to spray your perfume on them. You smell so much better
VVM: weird compliment, but I’ll take it
VVM: we should go out dancing. I’d give you such a better time
BLH: Would you, now?
VVM: you know it, blondie
VVM: let’s do that for another date
Brooke is reminded of the holiday party, of how they’d danced pressed up against one another and how it was fucking hot. The chance to do something like that again with Vanessa? She’ll take it.
BLH: You wouldn’t be able to keep your hands off of me
VVM: you say that as if you’d be able to keep yours off of me
VVM: I know how much you love grabbing my ass
VVM: not that I’m complaining about it
Brooke smirks at her phone screen. She remembers how Vanessa had keened into her touch, spurred her on to keep going with little gasps into the crook of her neck. Dating or not dating, Brooke loves how easy Vanessa has been to take apart. She wants to do it again.
BLH: Interesting. Noted.
It’s funny. When she and Vanessa had signed their list, they had agreed on light PDA only. But there’s a part of Brooke that wants more more more, that wants Vanessa on her arm and wants everyone to know it. That Vanessa’s hers, that she’s the one who gets to take Vanessa home every night.
Brooke almost wishes that those things were actually true.
“C’mon, Nina. There you go, come on out of the Uber. Small steps, don’t slip on the ice.” Brooke wraps one of her arms around Nina’s waist, holds her up as they head to Nina’s apartment.
“Ugh. It’s too cold.” Nina leans her head on Brooke’s shoulder, and Brooke reaches out to pat her hair.
“Almost inside. You got your keys?”
Nina fiddles in her pockets for a good thirty seconds before pulling them out, holding them towards Brooke. “Please?”
“I got you.”
Brooke is usually the supportive friend in situations like these for Detox, helping her get home in one piece after she’s had too much to drink. Nina’s not usually the one to need it, but Brooke had found her in the club bathroom leaning against the mirror and sniffling about her fiancé. Considering the fact that they’d gone out for Nina’s birthday in the first place? Brooke had felt her duty calling.
“I don’t feel so well. That car ride was fast.” Nina rubs at her eyes as Brooke tries to get her coat off, pushing it off her shoulders and hanging it on the coat rack.
“Bathroom first, then.”
Nina sighs, resting her head against the lid of the toilet after sitting down on the ground. The scene feels reminiscent of Brooke’s undergraduate days, when she’d partied too much and absolutely did some damage to her poor liver. She pulls Nina’s hair back, has to keep her nose from wrinkling when Nina lets out a retch.
“Thanks, B.” Nina sighs when she lifts her head up, only to turn back towards the toilet to throw up again.
Brooke’s definitely been there before.
“No worries. It’ll feel better when it’s out of your system, anyway.” Brooke rubs her back, trying to keep her voice as quiet as possible because she knows Nina’s probably got a pounding headache, too. “Now, tell me. What made you drink so much today and end up crying by yourself on your birthday?”
Brooke’s surprised by it, really. Nina’s usually the one who takes care of everyone else like its second nature, because she has a high tolerance herself. Which means that to reach this current point tonight, she’s probably had a lot to drink. Which also means that something has to have really rattled her to get her here, bent over the toilet and looking slightly green.
“It doesn’t matter.” Nina mumbles the words, looking down, and Brooke puts a hand on her shoulder, gives her a little squeeze.
“Course it does. You can talk to me.”
Nina finally, finally looks at her, and Brooke can see the dimmed sparkle in her eyes, the sadness along her features. No, not sadness - more defeat.
“Am I making a mistake, Brooke? Marrying Ben?”
Booke pulls back in surprise. “What? What do you mean?”
Brooke has multiple friends that are in long term relationships and Nina’s, by far, always has looked the steadiest. The most wholesome. Nina never shuts up about her fiancé, telling Brooke all the time about the picnics he takes her on or the gifts he gets her or how they’re absolutely soulmates. Nina’s always looked happy, truly happy with her man, something that Brooke has loved to see, because Nina’s the kind of person who believes in true love. In a happily ever after. And, up until this moment, Brooke has believed that Nina’s been living exactly how she’s always dreamed of.
But what if she hasn’t?
“It’s just-it’s good. But it’s also just good, y’know? He brings me flowers and always opens doors for me and snuggles me at night but…” Nina lifts her head, looks at Brooke, and her face is more lost than Brooke has ever seen it. “I don’t feel anything else with him. Like, it’s happy, it’s good, he’s good, but-”
Nina cuts herself off, takes a deep breath as she lifts her left hand up, holds it out in front of them. The sparkling bling on her ring finger reflects sparkles along the bathroom tiles and walls, ones that make Nina wince when they shine on her face.
“I just don’t know. I’m not feeling what I’m supposed to feel, y’know?” Nina sits back, scooches away from the toilet to lean against the wall.
Brooke joins her because really, does she have anywhere else to be? She doesn’t know what to do though, not when Nina’s looking so forlorn and lost and all Brooke wants is be there for her, somehow, even though she’s never felt the way Nina is feeling right now.
So Brooke leans her head on Nina’s shoulder, feeling the comforting warmth of Nina leaning her head against hers, too. “I dunno, babe. I wish I could tell you I had the answer, or how to make things magical, but I have none of those answers. All I know is that you deserve to be happy. You deserve the ending that you’ve always wanted. I think you need to first figure out exactly what that is.”
Nina sighs, twisting her ring on her finger. “I have no idea what that is.”
“No need to decide on your birthday with a tipsy brain. It can wait.” Brooke unfolds herself from the ground, gets herself up before holding her hands out to Nina so that she can help her up, too.
“C’mon. Let’s get you into bed.”
The conversation replays in her mind, though, as she Ubers home from Nina’s. It makes no sense - how has Nina lost that spark with her fiancé, when they’ve always looked so stable? Did Nina ever really have it in the first place? Or did she just think she did? Was the way Nina had felt in the bathroom just cold feet, or was it something bigger?
And then there’s that spark Nina had talked about in the first place. Brooke tries to picture what it would feel like, what the concept of sparks flying actually even means. Fireworks and butterflies and falling head over heels? Hell, Brooke feels fireworks when she kisses Vanessa, but it’s only because she’s kissing a pretty girl after ages and ages and fully enjoying it. The concept of sparks flying feels elusive, something that could be searched for forever and ever without ever truly being found. It feels similar to the way that Vanessa’s looking for her true love and Princess Charming, and how she’s absolutely convinced that she’ll know when she finds her.
It feels like everyone has a radar for knowing these kinds of things except for Brooke. Not that Brooke minds, not really. Being in search of something that’ll never be in reach seems fruitless. Unnecessary. Especially when she has other things she’d rather be spending her time on.
Quite frankly? Brooke’s good with just her cats and friendship - especially Vanessa’s.

Under Shadow: Chapter 12
Najia’s body ached from sleeping on the hard ground. When she was alone, she preferred to stop somewhere where she could make a decent bed for herself. The desert ground was less than ideal, but she knew she was already on thin ice with Shane. She figured, in the circumstances, she could learn to sleep on the ground. After a month on the run, it wasn’t the first time she had done so. But she still missed the luxuries of her life in the city. She adapted only because she had to, but made every effort to make things as easy as possible for her. Including packing the car with every single useful thing she could find during her travels, and moving those items from one trunk to the next when she needed to seek out a new vehicle. She supposed she learned that from her father. Always be prepared - it was the boy scout motto, after all.
Shane, on the other hand, did not care for such luxuries. Of course, having luxuries were much harder when all you had was what you could carry. And Shane carried the bare minimum.
As Najia wired the car, she started to realize that she would likely need to adjust further still if she wanted to make it to Stardew Valley. While it seemed foolish to give up her supplies, they wouldn’t last forever. Shane had obviously made it with the bare minimum; perhaps she would be wise to learn to do the same. But then again, the time hadn’t come for such drastic measures. Why not enjoy what supplies she had for as long as she could?
Najia dusted her hands together and smiled as the engine purred. She let Shane climb into the driver’s side and she slid in beside him. She pulled out the map from the glove compartment and found their estimated location.
“There’s probably an old gas station up the main road, somewhere,” she said. She traced the line on the map with her finger. “We could fill up a couple more tanks there it be set for a while longer. Assuming it hasn’t run dry yet.”
Shane shrugged. “Yeah, okay.”
They drove in silence. Najia focused her attention out the window, trying to imagine the desert scenery passing in the daylight. It was likely just as boring a view as it was in the dark. She sighed loudly, but Shane did not acknowledge her.
“We need some music in here,” she muttered.
“Too bad radio stations don’t exist anymore,” Shane remarked snidely.
“What if one did exist, though? Someone in some abandoned station trying to deliver an S.O.S.”
Shane peered at her in his peripheral vision. “Don’t you think the Shadow People would notice and capture them?”
Najia slunk back in her seat and crossed her arms. “You have absolutely zero sense of adventure.”
Shane tensed. “You think this is an adventure?” His voice raised. “You think this is some game?”
Najia hesitated. “No.”
Shane narrowed his eyes at the road before him as he continued driving in silence. Najia shifted uncomfortably before opening the glove compartment. She fished through the odds and ends she had secured in there, pulling out an old, tattered CD case. She smiled to herself as she zipped it open and flipped through the contents she had collected.
“What are you doing,” Shane said quickly.
Najia selected a CD with the word ‘mixz’ scribbled in sharpie on the front and pushed it carefully into place inside the radio. It hummed quietly as it read the disk and the first track began to play. Shane groaned loudly as the song started, and Najia did not miss a beat as she belted out the song.
“I stay out too late!” she sang. “Got nothing in my brain! That’s what people say!”
Shane rolled his eyes.
“I go on too many dates, but I can’t make them stay,” she continued.
“I can see why,” Shane muttered.
Najia ignored him as she continued singing. She turned the knob on the radio and the music got louder.
“But I keep cruising. Can’t stop, won’t stop moving. It’s like I got this music in my mind saying it’s gonna be alright.” Najia danced in her seat as she sang out the chorus.
Shane winced and, having enough, ejected the disk from the radio. Najia stopped dancing and stared at the disk as it popped back out.
“What did you do that for?”
“You’re singing is as terrible as Taylor Swift.”
Najia crossed her arms. “It’s a fun, upbeat song. We could use a little fun in here.”
Shane pinched his lips together but didn’t respond.
“Do you have some beef with my girl T. Swift?”
“Please stop,” he muttered.
“Fine,” she said sharply. “What do you want to listen to?”
“Nothing,” he said quickly. “No music. It will only draw attention to us.”
Najia watched him closely for a moment before returning the disk to its case. She shoved it back into the glove compartment, humming to herself. She focused her attention on the dark road, leaning back in her seat with a sigh.
“Wanna play a game?”
“No.” His voice was stern.
“Were you always this much fun?”
“Yup.”
Najia rolled her eyes and turned back to the road. “I see. I bet the women flocked to you.”
Shane said nothing. Najia turned back to him, eye brow raised. “Men?”
Shane shot her another angry glance.
“Both?”
He sighed loudly.
“I bet you had tons of friends with that charming personality of yours,” she muttered.
Shane shrugged. “Maybe I did.”
Najia scoffed.
“Can you really blame me for being Mr. Brightside?”
“You could at least make an effort to be happy at the fact that you’re not the only survivor.”
“Of all the people in the world to get stuck with,” he muttered.
“Funny, I was just thinking the same thing.”
“What does it matter?” he muttered. “We won’t survive much longer. Might as well not get attached.”
Najia sighed. “You’re right,” she said. “Might as well make this as miserable as possible for ourselves.”
“Might as well.”
“I don’t buy it,” she said. “There’s some hope left in you. You wouldn’t have made it this far if you didn’t have some kind of hope. You’re going after something; that’s hope. Hope that something’s still out there.”
Shane was quiet. His knuckles whitened as he tightened his grip on the wheel.
“Fine,” Najia said, sensing his tension. “I’m sorry. I’ll leave it alone.”
They drove in silence once more. Najia let her mind wandered as she stared into the darkness before them. It was still early in the day. Najia couldn’t imagine another six hours in the car with Shane. She didn’t know what was worse; the silence, or his bubbly optimism. She rolled her eyes to herself at the thought. She only hoped they would reach the coast soon. Maybe then they could part ways and she could make her way to Stardew Valley. If Stardew Valley even existed.
“Jas,” Shane said, breaking the silence.
Najia turned to him, but he continued to focus on the dark road ahead.
“My goddaughter. And Marnie, my aunt.” He hesitated. “We were separated when the attack happened.”
Najia looked at her feet. “I’m sure you’ll find them,” she said quietly.
Shane shrugged. “I hope so.”

The Best Accident - Ch. 5
Chapter 4
NOTE: This is my first ever fic! I was terrified to write it but just sat down and let the words flow. This story is in preparation for TRH. I’m super excited for its release and couldn’t help imagining where it might go. This is my take on what happens between Maxwell and MC. Reblog if you like it! :)
PG-13
Summary: After one too many surprises, Maxwell reaches out to his friends for help.
Chapter 5 - Fallout
One week later...
Riley:
Sitting in the limo on the way to Dr. Hart's office, Maxwell was staring off into the distance. He was quiet. He had been quiet for the past week. His smiles never quite met his eyes. She could tell he was trying to be there for her, be strong, but he wasn't good at hiding his emotions.
One of the things she loved most about her husband was his ability to wear his heart on his sleeve. His emotions weren't something she had to guess at - they were always right there in front of her and she didn't need to try and figure him out.
Over the past week, that had changed. He had withdrawn and been distant. He hadn't been cold or mean. He'd just quietly drawn into himself as he tried to process everything that was happening.
She was trying to give him his space because she knew he'd eventually come around. This was Maxwell after all. He'd always been right by her side through everything that had been thrown at her since he unexpectedly came into her life. She knew he just needed time to adjust, then he'd see how amazing this was.
Riley held his hand and gently rubbed her thumb along the back of his hand trying to be comforting. He looked at her and gave her a small smile before turning back to look out the window.
Soon, they were walking through the back door at the doctor's office. They needed to be discreet about this. If the press got wind of this pregnancy before they were ready to make a statement it could be a disaster. Especially with the way Maxwell was acting at this moment. He needed time to process without the press breathing down his neck.
One of Dr. Hart's nurses ushered them into a private room with an examination table and what looked like a machine with a small screen attached to it. "Please have a seat, Your Grace. I'm going to check your vitals for a baseline for your chart, and then Dr. Hart will be right in," the nurse said kindly but efficiently.
The nurse proceeded to take Riley's blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and blood oxygen levels and write everything down in the chart. "Everything looks great," she told the Duchess.
Riley looked at Maxwell. He sagged slightly with relief at the news that so far everything looked great.
The nurse quietly collected her file and left the room. Riley looked at her husband. "Maxwell, I know this is hard for you. I really appreciate you coming with me," she told him.
He looked at her with a small smile. "I couldn't leave you to face this alone. Even if this has all been a shock to me and I'm not really sure how to deal with my emotions, I want to be there for you if I can," he replied.
Riley smiled at him. "I love you, Maxwell. I know you're doing your best and that's all I ever need from you," she told him.
He smiled at her, sitting back slightly in the chair.
There was a brisk knock on the door, and Dr. Hart poked her head in the room. "Hello, Duchess Riley, Duke Maxwell. Are you ready for me to begin the exam?" she asked.
Riley nodded at her. "Yes, as ready as we'll ever be, Dr. Hart," she said with a smile.
Dr. Hart entered the room with the nurse behind her and closed the door. She said, "You Grace, at this point I'd like to do an ultrasound to see how far along you are so we can estimate a due date. It's likely too early for us to do an external ultrasound so we're going to use this wand to do an internal exam. It's not painful at all, it'll just feel like a slight bit of pressure and then we can see the baby and check its heart rate. Does that sound okay?"
Riley nodded. "Sounds good," she exhaled. She was incredibly nervous. What if something was wrong? What if she couldn't hear the heartbeat? She was holding her breath, heart racing.
Dr. Hart turned on the screen on the machine in the room and pulled out a wand like device. She squirted some lubrication on it and told Riley, "Okay, Your Grace, this may be a bit of an odd sensation. Are you ready?"
"Yes, go ahead," Riley replied, bracing herself.
Dr. Hart pushed the device inside of her and Riley exhaled. It really wasn't bad at all. She could handle this. She turned her head intently at the little screen waiting to see her and Maxwell's baby. She grabbed Maxwell's hand and squeezed. He was looking between her and the screen with fear in his eyes.
She wanted nothing more than to soothe him in that moment but she wasn't sure what to say or do, so she just squeezed his hand again with a small smile and turned her attention back to the screen.
Suddenly there was a small dot on the screen. Was this her baby? She felt tears spring to her eyes.
Dr. Hart was silent for a moment while she looked intently at the screen.
"Dr. Hart, is... is everything okay?" Riley asked cautiously, her voice shaking slightly.
"Well, Your Grace, the babies look great," Dr. Hart said slowly.
Riley blinked. "Babies?"
"Yes, that's right. There are two separate fetuses here and both look great. They're progressing exactly as they should be and both appear to have strong heartbeats," Dr. Hart explained.
Riley's heart was racing. Oh, no. Maxwell was barely holding it together as is. How would he deal with this? She looked at her husband. He had gone white and was holding completely still.
Abruptly he stood up. "I can't do this. I need some air," he explained as he began to run from the room.
Riley just watched him go, a silent tear running down her cheek. How could he not see how amazing this was?
...
Maxwell:
Maxwell's mind was racing. How could this be happening? He felt like he was crawling out of his own skin. He didn't know how to process his thoughts or emotions. He had just walked out on his wife after hearing they were having twins. TWINS. Oh, my god.
He needed to get away. He couldn't do this. He felt the need to run. His thoughts were a jumble of what ifs and he just needed to flee.
As he practically ran down to the entrance to the doctor's office, he called a car for his wife. He'd take the limo they rode to the office in and the replacement car would be there to take her home. It killed him but he couldn't face her right now. He was so ashamed of what he'd just done.
Once he was safely inside the limo, he told the driver to take him to the palace. He knew he wouldn't have to face Bertrand there and could talk to his two best friends, Liam and Drake. They'd always welcome him and hopefully be able to help him straighten his mind out.
Once the drive was well underway, he took out his phone to text his friends:
[Maxwell: Is it cool if I come stay a few days? Am freaking out]
[Liam: Always. What's going on?]
[Drake: Yeah, Maxwell. You can always come stay with us. We'll see you soon.]
[Maxwell: Don't wanna text abt it. Will talk when I see u.]
[Liam: Okay, see you soon.]
Maxwell tucked his phone back into his pocket, switching it off. He needed time and space away from Riley and the... babies. He couldn't even think it without his stomach knotting up and feeling like he was going to throw up.
Time away was exactly what he needed.
...
Riley:
Once Riley was home, she let the tears come. She could never be angry at Maxwell for how he reacted. She knew he was doing his best and her husband had never backed down from a challenge yet. He just needed space, so unless something was really wrong with her or the babies, she wouldn't call him. She'd give him the time he needed. She was worried about him, though.
Babies... She hadn't even had time to process that thought herself. She had never imagined that they would have gotten this news today. If she really thought about it and got past the overwhelming thoughts about what was to come pregnancy-wise, she was excited at the idea of having two babies that were a perfect mix of her and Maxwell.
Based on the way he was reacting to this pregnancy, she doubted she'd ever have another chance to have Maxwell's babies and she had wanted a big family. This couldn't have worked out better for her if she'd tried.
Suddenly her phone vibrated, interrupting her thoughts. She looked at the screen:
[Drake: Head's up, Johnson - Maxwell's coming to stay with me and Liam. We don't know what's happening with you two but we'll talk to him and hopefully send him back to you in a day or two]
[Liam: Yeah, we've got him. Try not to worry, Riley.]
[Riley: Thanks, guys. I appreciate you letting me know. I'm really worried about him. I'll let him tell you what's going on.]
Riley put her phone down. She was so thankful for these men who had welcomed her into their lives so completely. She loved them all, even if Maxwell had been the one who ultimately stole her heart completely.
She knew if anyone could get through to Maxwell, it'd be them.
...
Drake:
Drake had been training in the self-defense gym when he got the text from Maxwell. "Hell. This isn't good," he said aloud to no one. He quickly sent a text to Riley to let her know what was going on and went to find Liam. He imagined he'd find him in his study. They needed to figure out what the hell was going on before they put themselves in the middle of a mess.
He lightly knocked on the closed study door. Bastien, who stood guard outside the door, nodded once at him. Drake was Liam's personal guard but he was more informal, more like undercover, accompanying Liam whenever they left the palace.
No one besides Liam, Bastien, and a few other King's Guard members knew he was actually Guard himself. His position was unique to only him, having grown up with Liam and being his best friend, too. Liam trusted Drake more than anyone else with his life.
"Come in," Liam called out.
Drake opened the door and walked inside, closing it behind him.
"I figured it'd be you," Liam said. "You remember our promise to each other?"
"Of course, Liam. Why do you think I'm here?" Drake replied, slightly annoyed.
He and Liam had promised each other when Riley married Maxwell that they would never let him hurt her. They had both been in love with her, too, which they confessed to each other the night of Riley's bachelorette party after too much whiskey.
That night they had made each other a promise that as long as either of them were alive, they would never let Maxwell hurt Riley. They knew their friend could be flaky and impulsive. They both were in love with Maxwell's wife and as neither of them could have her, they had agreed to make sure she got to live happily with the love of her life.
"So, what are we going to do? I have no idea what is even happening," Drake said, running a hand through his hair.
Liam looked out the window thoughtfully. "There doesn't seem to be a lot that could make Maxwell run away from Riley. You know as well as I do that he loves her at least as much as we do."
"Yeah, I guess that's true," Drake replied.
"He'll be here soon. We'll wait for him to tell us. But we have to get him to go home, to see what he has right in front of him and to make sure he doesn't throw it away," Liam said sadly.
"Agreed," Drake said.
...
Maxwell:
A couple of hours later he was pulling up in front of the palace. He hadn't been back here in about a month and being back in such a familiar place put him more at ease. He felt a little bit like he could breathe again.
He got out of the limo and headed into the palace. He hadn't brought any luggage, but he headed for his room to freshen up and then he'd go find his friends.
Once he had splashed some cold water on his face, he set out to find Liam and Drake. He figured at this time of day they'd probably be in his study.
He approached the doors and knocked briskly. "It's Maxwell," he announced.
"Come in," Liam called.
He opened the door and stepped in the room, closing the door behind him. He wasn't sure he'd ever been happier to see his best friends than in that minute. He almost felt like he could cry with relief.
He exhaled shakily.
"Wow, Maxwell. I've never seen you like this," Drake said, looking at this friend with concern.
Maxwell walked over to the sofa in Liam's office and sat down. "You guys have no idea. I'm sorry to just spring my issues on you like this. I know you're busy, well, running a country and all that," Maxwell said nervously. "I just didn't know what else to do."
Liam walked over and began pouring them each a whiskey. He carried them over to the sofa area and sat down with his two best friends. "Maxwell, why don't you tell us what's going on and we can go from there," Liam proposed.
Maxwell hesitated. He didn't know if he could say the words aloud. He began to speak, his voice shaky. "About a week ago, Riley found out she's pregnant." He exhaled, feeling tearful and ashamed for feeling the way he did about something that most other men would be thrilled about.
"Whoa, Johnson's gonna have a kid? Your kid?" Drake exclaimed, shocked.
Liam looked at Drake out of the corner of his eye and cleared this throat. "Ahem, what Drake meant to say was 'congratulations'," Liam said diplomatically.
"Please continue, Maxwell. You said she told you a week ago? So, why did you panic today?" Liam asked.
"That's just it," Maxwell said. "I'd been trying to be there for her on the outside the best that I could this past week, even though I've been struggling so much inside. I didn't know if I ever wanted kids and I was just getting used to the idea of being somebody's husband. Then this happened by accident and it's all my fault. I know exactly when it happened. I did this to myself and I've been so mad at myself for it," he said, voice thick with emotion.
"I was keeping it together somewhat okay until today. Today we had our first appointment with the doctor," he continued.
"Wait, is Johnson okay? Did something happen to her?" Drake was practically shouting.
Maxwell looked at his friend curiously. "What? No. Riley's fine."
Drake tried to compose himself from the panic that had sprung up so quickly. He had nearly given the fact that he was completely in love with Maxwell's wife away. He took a deep breath. "Okay, then just spit it out. What's going on?"
Maxwell sighed. "Today we found out it's twins."
Drake and Liam both had matching looks of shock on their faces. "Twins?" Liam asked.
"Yep. Twins. I can't believe this is my life." Maxwell buried his face in his hands.
"What do you mean you can't believe this is your life? You're such a lucky son of a bitch and you can't even see it! You've got a gorgeous wife who supports everything you do and she's going to have your babies. How can you not see how lucky you are?" Drake asked him, eyes flashing anger.
Maxwell looked at his friend as if seeing him for the first time. Understanding dawned in his eyes at his friend's impassioned speech. "You love her, don't you?" he asked Drake.
"No! What are you talking about?" Drake shifted his eyes away from Maxwell. "She's my friend, you both are. It's my job as your best friend and best man to make you see what an ass you're being."
Liam had quietly watched this exchange, carefully pondering his next words. "Maxwell," he spoke in his commanding kingly voice.
Maxwell and Drake both looked at him expectantly.
"Do you want to divorce Riley?" he asked seriously.
"What? No! Why would you ask me that?" Maxwell asked, suddenly panicked.
"Well, the way I see it you have two choices here. You either wrap your mind around the fact that you're about to be a father and try and enjoy it, or you leave Riley for good and I can start the divorce right now," Liam replied.
Maxwell looked at his friend with wild eyes. "I could never leave Riley. Never. It's not even a question in my mind. I wouldn't survive it. I need her like I need my next breath."
"Okay, I'm glad to hear it. Then you know what you have to do. I understand if you need a couple of days to do it but Maxwell," Liam paused to lock eyes with his friend, a warning in his tone. "You need to go be the husband Riley needs you to be."
...
Maxwell left the study feeling a lot calmer than when he came to the palace. He knew his friends would put things into perspective for him and it felt good to have people to confide into, to get his thoughts off his chest.
He headed to his room and grabbed his phone. He wanted to let Riley know he was okay and that he would be staying here a couple of days. He missed her terribly already and just wanted to wrap his arms around her and apologize for putting her through all this, but he couldn't. Not yet. He had to be sure he wouldn't freak out and run out on her again.
When he went home, it would be for good. There would be no more running out on his wife.
He began to type:
[Maxwell: Hey wifey. I'm so sorry for running out today like I did. I'm still struggling with everything. I need a few days and I'm going to stay here with Liam and Drake. I miss you like crazy.]
He waited, holding his breath until she replied:
[Riley: I love you and I miss you, too. Come home to me when you're ready. I'll be waiting.]
God, he didn't deserve her. He was exhausted, not just from this day but from the week. He needed a nap. He laid down on his bed and drifted off into a dreamless sleep, the bed cold beside him.

An Interesting Gift
Requested By: @skip-skip-hooray
I seriously loved writing this. Although halfway through it I realized I was writing in third person which I never do so that’s fun. Enjoy!
Y/N sat there in the armchair, a little white box in her hands. It had been wrapped to look like an anniversary gift (even though her real gift to him was hidden in the back of the hall closet). She was in complete disbelief; after almost a year of trying, she was finally carrying her husband’s baby.
Steve had called her on his lunch break at the shop, saying to be ready to go out when he got home. He hadn’t told her where they’d be going, so she just hoped she wasn’t going to make them late to any dinner reservations. Though at this rate, it was starting to look like Steve was going to be the one to make them late. He still wasn’t home from work and it was almost six.The door swung open rather dramatically and almost made her spill the glass of sun tea that she’d gotten up to pour herself.
“I knew I said be ready but I didn’t expect you to be just this beautiful,” Steve said as he wrapped her up in his arms, “‘Cause baby, you’re just drop-dead gorgeous.”
“Well thank you but you just about spoiled it comin’ in here all covered in grease and oil from work,” she teased, “And almost half an hour late too.”
“What if I had an important errand to run before I came home? Think you could forgive me?”
“Depends. I was about ready to send out a search party. Or worse- call Soda and ask where you were, I’m sure I’d get a kick out of his answer,” She joked, staring up into those dreamy blue eyes until she almost felt like she was drowning in them.
“I was picking up your present baby, it just got in last night and I couldn’t have gone to get it then because you’d have seen the bag.”
“Well then I guess you’re forgiven this time. I don’t know what time you planned on leaving here but I think you’d better start getting ready.” She said as she leaned back against the kitchen table.
“Well I was thinking we’d leave around maybe seven or so. I just wanted to come home to you all dolled up,” he says as he gently kisses her forehead.
“So we’re just gonna bum around here until then?”
“Well we could go ahead and exchange gifts now since it’ll be the last thing on our minds when we get back tonight,” he suggests with a wink.
She couldn’t help but chuckle at his flirty little comment. “Fine Stevie but go get ready I can’t wait to see what you got me.” He nodded before giving her a quick kiss and heading off down the hall.
“But don’t even think about taking a peek at yours, Y/N. I mean it I want to surprise you.”
She went back into the living room and sat down. She picked up the little white box- which almost seemed silly considering what was in it.An envelope might have been a better choice looking back on it- and carefully lifted the lid. Inside was a small card. “Estimated Due-Date: February 19, 1969. Congratulations.” The note on the card was short, to the point, and quite frankly pretty bland, but the meaning was so much greater. She put the lid back on the box and set it all back on the end table beside her chair and tried to concentrate on the book she’d been reading earlier, and after about a chapter of The Bell Jar later, Steve stepped out into the room.
“So I’m guessing you’re gonna want yours first, huh?” He asked, his signature light-up-the-whole-room kind of smile shining as brightly as ever.
“Come on, quit stalling let’s do this already!” She responded excitedly. Steve hurried out to the car while Y/N grabbed his gift out of its hiding place. When she returned, she found him already seated in the chair across from hers, and a red and gold gift bag in his hands.
“Oh I put the roses in a vase by the way. Happy anniversary baby, I’m not sure how I could love you any more than I do right now,” He said as he handed her the bag. She pulled out the tissue paper to find a velvet clamshell case, and inside it was the most beautiful set of pearls she’d ever seen. “Are those the same ones you pointed out that one day in the jewelry store window? If you don’t like them I can always take them back and exchange th-”
“No they’re perfect. I love them!” She cut him off and gave him a swift, yet still passionate kiss. “Roses too? Can’t wait to see what you’ll do for our second.”
“Just you wait, I’ve already got it planned,” he joked, “So does it matter which one I open first?”
“Yeah, this one,” she said, handing him his real gift first. It was a real wedding ring. She’d been saving every spare penny she came across ever since the day they’d realized they couldn’t afford anything more than a cheap nickel one for him, even though Steve made sure that she was able to get whichever one she wanted.
“Oh… Baby you really didn’t have to…” He said, even though she could tell how thankful he was that she did.
“Don’t you think a real gold band makes it a little more official?”
“We’re married, and that preacher would’ve done it with two loops of thread and it’d still count. I don’t see how anything could be better or more official than what we have right here.”
“Wanna bet?” She mused, “Open up the other one.” He looked at her as he reached for the box. It was easy to see the slight confusion written across his face, and it only made the moment sweeter to her. He lifted the lid and read the card, but still looked slightly confused by its meaning.
“Stevie… Honey, I’m pregnant.” Tears of joy started to well up in her eyes. The same happened for Steve when the words finally sank in.
“I’m gonna be a father?” He asked in utter disbelief.
“Not just any father, the best one in this whole world.”

Holsom Fic-Rec
Although I have my all-time favorite OMGCP fic bookmarked on my Ao3 page, I wanted to compile a master list of all of my favorite OMGCP Ao3 fic to have in one place on my tumblr. And since I’m that neurotic, I thought it might also be nice to break-up each ship as well:
Two Minutes for Holding | halfabreath One-Shot, 2k Ransom is a team physician and Holster is a referee. They first meet on the ice during a particularly physical Aces v. Falcs game.
not funny | applecrumbledore One-Shot, 9k This whole thing feels so weird, like they're betraying some clause of the homosocial bro code that says it's only for fun, you can't actually be gay, like they're letting someone down. But on the other hand, being with each other is the most natural thing they've ever done. Like a chemical reaction, or two halves of something whole, or one of those hand puzzles where the two pieces of metal are all twisted around each other, or the logical and satisfying conclusion of a really good book.
Score | emmagrant01 One-Shot, 12k Ransom and Holster like to score goals for each other, and they like to take care of each other. It was probably just a matter of time before those two things became entangled.
What I Wanted Was to Fall Asleep | halfabreath One-Shot, 5k The gods are real, which everyone knows, but when they’re not fighting among themselves they’re usually partying and humans have generally learned to accept their meddling without too much complaining. Ransom just never thought he’d actually know someone who’d been god-touched and he never, ever expected that it would be Holster. Alternatively: Holster becomes a tree.
Five Things Adam Birkholtz Learns in HDFS 332: Healthy Couple Relationships | EllyAvon Completed Multi-Chapter, 6k HDFS 332: Healthy Couple Relationships is just the night class Holster is taking with Lardo to fulfill one of his core requirements. He doesn't expect it to drastically change his life. OR: The Weirdest Healthy Relationships PSA Ever. OR: Wholesome Holsom
In a Different Frame | sunfair One-Shot, 4k Holster is determined to become somebody's boyfriend. Too bad he's kind of an idiot. He figures it out, though.
BFFWB | emmagrant01 One-Shot, 7k Ransom's schedule this semester leaves no time for a sex life. Holster has a solution for that. (Set fall 2014)
Seasonal Drinks | rhysiana Completed Multi-Chapter, 1k An AU in which Ransom and Holster never met in college. Thank goodness for the local coffee shop.
someone as good for me as you | astrolesbian One-Shot, 7k “So tell me,” Justin’s mother says, all business, “is your boy going to propose?” “What, Jack?” Justin says, and doesn’t really think much of it, because his mother eats up the details of Jack and Bitty and JackandBitty like Holster eats up rom-coms. His mother sighs, and he can practically hear her rolling her eyes. “No, baby, I meant Adam.”
what is the meaning of this? | kleinergruenerkaktus Multi-Part Series, 13k Ransom has a system, and it was working just fine before Holster came along.
There Were Fireflies | Schuyler One-Shot, 3k Holster has never been weird about shit like this before. They’ve been friends for, what? Almost a decade? And Holster has never said anything bad about guys who date other guys. Hell, they lived in a house with Jack and Bits. But Ransom goes on two dates with a guy and Holster goes ballistic.
blink back to let me know | nighimpossible One-Shot, 4k Justin is a medical student in Boston and Holster is working in New York.Things were a lot easier before they became real people.
Here’s a Man in Evenin’ Clothes | halfabreath One-Shot, 5k Ransom's estimating that they've got another 3.75 hours until the last people trickle out of the Haus. 3.75 hours, 225 minutes.Holster grins, flushed and disheveled and handsome as Justin has ever seen him, and suddenly he knows he's not going to be able to wait another 225 minutes before kissing him. Or: Epikegster toga porn
Keep It | petals42_tumbler (rosepetals42) Completed Multi-Chapter, 18k At the start of their senior year, Ransom is dating March and Holster is okay. Of course he is. Except when he's not.

It was just another definition for one of the short answers in the midterm exam: a fundamental change in the basic concepts of and experimental practices within a given scientific discipline. It was a benign factoid to be stored away, something to be revisited in a later essay: compare and contrast the views of Thomas Kuhn and Karl Popper on the scientific process. He hadn’t understood just how jarring such a fundamental shift could be until he broke up with Adam. (Happy ending!)

One Dance | palateens Complete Multi-Chapter, 7k If he remembers any part of them making out and promptly passing out on the couch the next morning, he doesn’t mention it. Justin would rather avoid making things weird with his best friend while he’s still searching for his soulmate. She’s out there somewhere, and she’s everything he’s ever dreamed of.
The Final Rose | Tintinnabulation_of_the_Bells Incomplete Multi-Chapter, 7k Justin Oluransi quits his job and goes on the reality dating TV show The Bachelor looking to find love. It should be simple, but what he finds is nothing he (or Bachelor host Adam Birkholtz) could ever have imagined of in their wildest dreams.

Why I (Don’t)... [A New Annoying Series] Actual Title: Why I Don’t Take Commissions From Strangers Anymore
Hey, guys! So I’ve been in a sort of rant-y mood lately and I’ve just posted a vent a few days ago about why I train for mat wrestling instead of going to wrestling school.
I thought that since I’m probably gonna be posting a lot more of this kind of rant/vent posts, I figured I’d make it a series where I can:
Rant/Vent about certain topics
Answer asks regarding said topic or
Give my thoughts and opinions about certain stuff
Under the cut will be the actual rant so if you’re not into these sorts of posts, either ignore this or blacklist the words ‘rant’ and ‘vent’ so you won’t have to see further installments of this series.
Why I Don’t Take Fanfic Commissions From Strangers Anymore
You guys probably didn’t know this (that’s on purpose since I don’t think my work is good enough. and besides, i don’t have a paypal account) but I take fanfic commissions from either my friends, my family, my classmates, my professors; Basically anyone who is willing to shell out money for my work.
I originally posted my commission prices on my class’ (or ‘block’ as we refer to it here) group DMs. I did the whole 9 yards; I posted to the PE Group, the Western Cuisine Group, the Bar and Beverage Management Group; I posted that commission list to every school/class related group DM I had, and I’m sure I pissed off a few people because most of them were in all of those groups as well so they’d seen the same list over and over again. Sure, my commission list was pretty full, but none of the works I was working with were like more than 2,000 words so I was finishing them rather quickly.
The way I do these commissions is through Google Docs or MS Word and send through e-mail, but the payment has to be handed to me in person the day before I start the commission, either half or full price upfront depending on the trust I have with the client.
Now, it may seem like I’m rambling but all this will make sense in a second.
So, a lot of my clientele (if you could call it that) are people from my friends circle, or people who have the same major as me, same classes as me, or basically just people I interact with on a daily basis and/or know on a basic level.
I keep this business a secret from my family because I’ll admit it: I don’t like sharing hard-earned money unless it’s important. I know that makes me sound horrible but what I do with the money I’ve earned is treat my mom or my sister or both to go to the mall, maybe buy a few nice things for them to kinda...give back to them. Sometimes, I even tell my mom to just not give me lunch money on certain days because I can buy food for myself, saving her money to treat herself with. If they knew about my “job” as a fanfic writer, they’d constantly borrow money from me that I could’ve spent giving my mom and my sister gifts.
Now that that’s outta the way, onto the actual rant.
Like I said, I take commissions from my classmates who I have the same classes/major with or professors with whom I have classes with. So I know everyone who commissions me in the event of a discrepancy, regarding either the agreed-upon word count, confusion about prices, wanting refunds, etc., etc., they could easily approach me for it or leave a note in my locker with their name, commission details, class/subject we both have, and any concern they might have. (It’s very detailed for a fanfic commission, I know. It would’ve been easier if this was all done digitally but just like with everything else, I need receipts in case of any mishaps that might happen.)
Since I use the same format for new commissions, someone from the IT College (mind you, I’m an HRS/Hospitality & Restaurant Services major) submitted a request note saying that they would like to commission me for a 10,000+ word, multi-chaptered work, and told me to meet up at the school canteen later at lunch that day to discuss details.
I was already cringing at that point because, let’s face facts here: College students don’t really have any money to spare unless they’re either really rich or they have a part-time job. And the fic they wanted was going to be at least $105 (₱5,600 = $38 + my time [$10] + the extra details they wanted [which estimated around $20 since they asked for basically purple prose descriptions] + the prologue [which costs exactly the same price for a one-shot, 1,000< word fic $5) and I know they aren’t gonna have the money to pay upfront.
When we met up, he told me all the details, that he wanted the prologue to be more than 1,000 words, and I immediately warned them that that would cost extra since the price for a standard, 1000< fic would be $5/₱300 but they still wanted it so their total was now up to $110.
I know that sounds like an absurd amount of money to charge a college student but mind you, they wanted at least 30,000 words spread throughout 5 chapters, excluding the prologue which was about 2,500, and they wanted it to be as descriptive as I can write it. And also, this was the cheapest I could go for such a lengthy piece, given the client’s situation and my time and expertise. Which means that I have to either rush out other commissions or tell those clients that their commission would be finished at a later date, both of which I didn’t want to do because if I rush a story, it’ll end up not being worth the money I was given. And I don’t want my clients to wait any longer than, say, a week for a 1,000 word fanfic. Fics of that length shouldn’t even take me a week, I finish those in like 1-3 days depending on how many commissions I have, or my personal situation.
Now, back to the absurd commission. I calculated the price right in front of him so there would be no further questions or complaints as to how the price was how it was, and I had them make a recording on my phone saying that they agree with the price, again another safety net for me should anything go wrong.
Now, since the price was a certainly beyond what he could’ve had as his lunch money at the time, I decided to make the mistake decision to let them pay half when I send them the WIP screenschot of the prologue and the rest when it’s done. That way, they’d have more than enough time to save up some of the money since it’d taken me 3 weeks to finish that. I also made him record himself on my phone saying that he agreed to this payment method.
Cue the day I send them the screenshot of the prologue (which was well over a week after the price agreement) and told them “alright, like in our agreement, we can meet up at school so you can pay half like we agreed, then I can finish the entire thing.” Lo and behold, they reply to me with “oh, I don’t have the money yet. It’s been a rough couple of weeks, I had to spend a bit of money to help with tuition and bills and stuff.”
Now, I get it: Life can be a surprising bitch and it’ll spring up awful situations when you least expect it, especially when you’re in college like we were. So, against my better judgement, I let them know that they can pay full price once I’m done, which they again agreed to. I have the screenshots but for my and this client’s privacy, I won’t post them here. (and because I’m too lazy to block the names out of the screenshots)
Well, 3 weeks later and the fanfic was finally done and out of my hair, I asked around the IT professors if the client was one of their students. Guess what?
Turns out they fucking dropped out of the school one week prior. So I messaged them, politely and professionally, to remind them of the fic they commissioned and they had the fucking balls to say, and I quote:
“Can you just fucking leave me alone? That commission was a prank and you fucking fell for it, loser. Do you actually think that people want to pay for stories? Fuck, I can write the story myself and it would be 10 times better than the commission I had you make for me. Good luck with your failing business, bitch.”
After that, I just...I ripped that asshole a new one, saying that if they could make a better story, why commission for it, even if it was just a prank, bro? I said a lot more but I don’t want to remember that time. It was a bad time for me because it was so upsetting wasting precious time, energy and skill, only to be scammed out of an insane amount of money.
I already knew, even before I started my commissions, that fanfic commissions were gonna be a niche market since, y’know, people already don’t want to pay for a fucking “art piece that I could’ve made myself”, so I prepared myself for the backlash I’d get from outraged people who would complain about me being a “selfish bitch because you charge for a bunch of words on the internet”.
But to be burned this bad is just so upsetting. I literally cried in the bathroom that day because I just felt so stupid for making that one mistake of letting someone outside of my usual clientele circle to not only request a commission but not letting them pay upfront like I always do with other commissions.
Since then, I’ve never let a stranger commission me ever again because I was just so traumatized by it that I don’t want to feel that way again. I never want to feel stupid because I did something out of the kindness of my heart. I don’t wanna be made a fool simply for being nice to someone.
This was a very long one because it’s such a personal story of mine that just really grinds my gears everytime I think about it.
To the people who do commissions of any kind, (whether it be art, adoptables, fanfiction, YCHs, or whatevs) NEVER BREAK YOUR BUSINESS MODELS LIKE I DID. Especially your payment conditions. I was stupid to do so, so please
Don’t repeat the same mistake that I did.

(Fanfic) Set in Stone - Chapter Five
Title: Set in Stone
Pairing: Sarumi
Chapter: 5/18
Rating: M
Mirrors: AO3 | Website
Summary: Yata wasn’t sure what he was expecting when he performed a summon on his own in a fit of drunken loneliness. It definitely wasn’t some asshole demon with a bad attitude, even if that demon happened to be frustratingly hot. But breaking their contract was going to mean working together, and he wasn’t sure how much of that he could take before he snapped… one way or another.
Note: Thank you to @dropletons for being my beta and to @chromekins for helping with the magic aspect. This fic is not entirely accurate in terms of modern magic and the demon lore was basically made up to suit the story, but I tried to keep somewhat of an authentic feel, so hopefully that succeeded.
Somehow even without removing the moonstone from his pocket and giving it a go, Yata still felt the thrumming energy of the sun beating against his body as he settled on the rooftop of the building that housed the bar. Moreso than usual.
So this is it, huh? One of those spots Munakata had mentioned. As expected, since Anna had confirmed it, this really did feel different from the usual energy he got from the sun.
Experimentally, he spread out his wings again, feeling the vibrant warmth soaking into his entire body. It was as comforting as it was invigorating – he could feel the tension and stress in his muscles start to dissipate even as his energy level rose. Closing his eyes for a moment, Yata tilted his face up toward the sun and just took it in.
“Based on that reaction, it seems like this is the right place,” Fushimi commented dryly. When Yata turned to look at him, he was settling himself on the ground, cross-legged. “In any case, you’re the one who manages sun charges, so I’ll leave that to you.”
Again with that irritating tone. Yata scowled at him, but reached into his pocket for the moonstone all the same. It felt cool against his palm as he turned it up to absorb the sun’s energy, and he could get a sense of its response: sluggish and reluctant, as expected. Still, at least it was taking something in. “Yeah, and what are you gonna do? Sleep?”
Fushimi turned one of his hands slightly and a thin laptop manifested within the grip of his fingers. “I’ll be doing something I wouldn’t trust you with,” he responded, opening the device and starting it up. “Researching our next move.”
“Like I wanna do that shit anyway!” Feeling disgruntled but still too curious to let it go, Yata flopped down beside Fushimi, pulling his wings back behind him and still holding the stone on the palm of his hand so it was exposed to the sun. “So? How you gonna figure that out?”
As he watched, Fushimi opened a program that displayed what looked like a 3D map, zoomed out to the point where individual buildings weren’t visible. “This is your city,” he explained dispassionately, tilting the model so that the view was completely top-down. “As up-to-date a view of it as we can get, anyway.” He shifted things again, this time turning the axis of the camera so that the city spun on the screen, and moved the mouse to the top of the map. “North is here, for reference.”
“Ah… right.” Yata wasn’t great with abstraction but he could at least read a map. And he’d done enough rituals to kinda get a sense of where this was heading. “You think the charging points are at like the north, south, east, and west? But you’d need a center point for that, right?”
“I guess you’re not quite as dumb as you come across,” Fushimi murmured, and ignored Yata’s scowl, continuing immediately. “There are two centers that I can think of: this bar, which is our starting point” – he slid the mouse pointer to a blinking spot on the screen and clicked, leaving a red dot with solid lines extending out to all four sides – “and the Captain’s office, which will be our finishing point.” The mouse moved across the screen again, settling at a different location and clicking to create another mark.
Yata blinked at him. “Munakata’s place is the finish line?”
“Almost guaranteed.” Fushimi didn’t even look up, this time spinning the mouse around the places where the solid lines hit the outskirts of the city to create rough circles. “It’s the closest point to where I live – my ‘place I belong to’, so to speak. These other points are a rough estimate; we’ll have to go to the areas and look around for the charging spots.”
“Still, this narrows it down a lot!” Once again, Yata was impressed by how quickly Fushimi had worked it out. “That’s awesome! How’d you think of all that stuff just like that, anyway?”
Fushimi looked up and met his gaze, a slight frown on his lips. There was something almost wary in his eyes. “This isn’t anything special – it’s basic logic.”
“Whatever – it’s still pretty cool to watch you just… go at it, y’know?” Yata grinned back, feeling more enthusiastic about the whole thing than he had since they’d started. There was some honesty in that cautious look that made Fushimi seem like less of a cryptic asshole and more of a closed-off grump. Maybe there was a possibility they could get along eventually. If there’d even be time for it. “With you figuring all that stuff out, we’ll probably be done in no time, huh?”
“We still have to search these areas and find the right spots,” Fushimi reminded him, turning back to his screen. “And as for the last two points…” He circled the two places on the map where the lines from Bar Homra and Munakata’s office intersected. “We might almost want to get those out of the way quickly.”
Yata frowned at the map and then at him, confused. “What’s that mean? What’s special about those places?”
“Just a hunch.” Fushimi was frowning at the map as if he were suspicious of it. “They’re not related to the directional poles but to those so-called ‘places we belong to’, so I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re a little more…” He paused, and then finished his sentence with a certain amount of distaste, “personal.”
“Huh.” Yata squinted at the map. “Not sure I get it, but…” Actually, based on where the line extending up from Homra met the line extending out from Munakata’s place was… “Shit,” he muttered out loud, a tiny shock spiking through him as recognition struck. He knew that neighborhood. “Seriously?”
“It’s true, huh?” Fushimi clicked his tongue, eyes flickering from Yata’s face back to the map again. “I guess the other one probably is around the area where that happened, huh?” he mumbled, as if to himself, tapping a finger with restless energy against the side of the laptop.
Yata didn’t bother to ask for clarification, feeling a small pit of dread forming in his stomach as he thought about it. Going back there again, huh? It sounded both painful and pleasant; he could already feel a taste of the mingled good and bad memories rising even at the idea. The thought of going there now, with this asshole getting a sense of all the emotion it was going to bring back… “Fuck.” He reached up to scratch at the back of his head with agitation. “Forget it. Let’s do those last.”
If he had to do it, at least he’d do it when he was close to getting rid of Fushimi and not have to face him for too long afterwards.
Fushimi took in a breath, clicking his tongue again before letting it out. “Not like I have a choice, having to tag along with you everywhere,” he muttered. “Well, I’m not any more eager to go there than you are.” He glanced down towards Yata’s open palm, where the moonstone still rested. “Are you sure that thing isn’t done yet? Overcharging won’t help us any.”
“Huh? Oh.” Yata shrugged. He could still feel the sluggish sense of energy absorption from the stone in his hand, a sense of warmth drawing into the cool, smooth surface of it. “It’s still going. We gotta wait a while, probably; this guy isn’t really stoked about sunlight.”
“‘This guy’, huh?” Fushimi turned his dubious gaze upward, meeting Yata’s eyes. “It’s a rock, you know.”
Yata frowned back. “Yeah, so? Everything’s connected to life somehow, y’know – even rocks. They got a purpose just like everything else.” He raised an eyebrow. “I woulda thought a demon would be better at hearing ’em than regular people, but whatever.” He let out a soft ‘heh’, letting his mouth turn up into a smirk. “Just take my word for it then.”
Fushimi’s eyes narrowed, a tightening in his experience spelling out obvious irritation. “Not everyone can be as in tune with nature as a changeling,” he muttered back, and clicked his tongue a third time. “Demons specialize in human desires, not the feelings of rocks.”
Human desires. Yata took in a breath, bracing himself against the reminder. It probably didn’t just mean those kinds of desires, but he couldn’t help but be aware of how close they were sitting – and the fact that he hadn’t put his shirt back on, leaving his entire torso as well as his wings exposed. At the back of his mind, there was still a vivid memory of the slender, pale-skinned chest and shoulders that he couldn’t seem to shove down. When they were looking at each other like this, close enough to notice when their gazes started to wander with less than innocent intent, it was hard to ignore the familiar shiver that started in his belly and rose up to the back of his chest.
So fucking annoying…
The fact that Fushimi could probably feel all of that through him had his cheeks growing hot again. Yata turned his gaze to scowl down at his hand instead, focusing on the moonstone to avoid the embarrassing reveal and shifting awkwardly at the sharp awareness of eyes on his body. “Yeah, well, that’s why I’m the one in charge of this part, so just leave it to me.”
“I was already planning to do that anyway.” The words came out in a drawl. When Yata looked up again, it was in time to catch Fushimi’s eyelids lowering lazily over his eyes as he gave him another of those heated looks. “Just make sure you focus properly.”
More taunts. Sort of. Yata shoved back the rush of excitement that gaze generated. It's not worth it. Not fucking worth it. “Yeah, yeah.” His voice came out embarrassingly off; he cleared his throat and tried again. “I got this.”
“If you say so.” The corners of Fushimi's mouth edged up into another of those deadly little smirks.
Not worth it, Yata reminded himself one more time, and made a soft ‘ch’ through his teeth as he deliberately turned his gaze away.
Silence fell between them, thick and uncomfortable. Yata shifted in his seat, closing his eyes and turning his face up towards the sun in an effort to drown out that awkwardly charged mood. The stone in his palm felt strangely heavy for some reason, and he kind of wished he could put it down.
His instincts told him that would be a bad move – and it made sense, he had to grudgingly admit. Despite the fact that he was a being with a natural affinity for moonlight, his personal aspect was the sun, and Munakata was probably right that him carrying this stone around, having contact with it and all, was going to help with this whole charging business. Anything he could do to help it charge – to help it hold a charge – was a tiny step in the direction of breaking this shitty contract and getting the rude asshole it came with out of his life.
The sound of fingers rapidly typing broke him out of his thoughts. Yata glanced beside him, finding Fushimi bent over his laptop. “What’re you doing?”
The typing didn’t even slow. “Working.” Fushimi clicked his tongue. “Or, at least, tying up some loose ends, since I won’t be able to do much while I’m wasting time in this realm.”
Yata blinked at him. “Wait… you actually work? Like, a job?”
At that, Fushimi’s fingers stilled. “What do you imagine we do all the time between contracts?” He turned to meet Yata’s gaze, raising an eyebrow. “Lounge around on a divan being fed grapes by lesser demons? Don’t be stupid.”
“How the fuck would I know? Do I look like an expert on demons?” Yata scowled back at him, a little irritated by the attitude – but still curious enough to go on. “What kinda job is it?”
Fushimi regarded him silently for a brief but telling moment, as if assessing the question. “Our realm reflects this one,” he answered finally, “in more ways than you’d think. We have the same problems with those who don’t play by the rules – lesser or greater in power. The Captain represents order in the fourth sector, but he can’t enforce that by himself. That’s part of what I do.”
“Huh.” It made sense, even if it sounded... surprisingly normal. “So you're like cops or something?”
That earned him a soft, amused huff. “You could say that. We have more freedom than the police here. I'm sure you've noticed this, but the Captain doesn't have any objections to using underhanded methods to get results.”
The reminder had his frown deepening. “Yeah, I figured that out. Sneaky bastard...” Yata let out a sharp huff of breath, releasing his annoyance with the situation. “So you guys are like a special squad or something – that’s sorta cool.” As he turned the idea over in his head, something else occurred to him. “Oh yeah, Mikoto-san said you were high ranking, so does that mean you’ve got some kinda lackeys working under you?”
One corner of Fushimi’s mouth twitched, forming the beginnings of what looked like a reluctant smile. “Something like that.”
The expression had the odd effect of making Yata smile back, feeling a bit less alienated. “You gotta be the worst person to work for, huh? D’you call them idiots all the time, too?”
Fushimi raised another eyebrow. “Only when they act like it.”
“Yeah, right.” Yata huffed out a brief laugh. “Your standard for ‘not an idiot’ is too high; just ’cause someone doesn’t immediately figure shit out like you doesn’t make ’em stupid.” He met that arch look with a gradually widening smirk. “You gotta lighten up more.”
“Coming from the expert, huh?” Fushimi returned his gaze without flinching, the upward tilt of his lips matching the lazy way his eyelids drooped. “You have an ugly temper yourself; there’s a thing called moderation, you know.”
Yata felt his mouth twitch at the corner, but it was easy to fend back the impulse to scowl. Sure, the comment was sorta irritating, but the mood had shifted. It felt less charged somehow, in a way he couldn’t explain. “At least I don’t have a shitty ass attitude about everyone and everything.”
If this lasted, hopefully it meant a temporary truce. They had to get through this somehow, and it was gonna be hell if they kept sniping at each other.
“Some of us are realistic enough to recognize when things aren’t perfect,” Fushimi drawled back.
“Yeah? Well, who needs perfect?” Yata’s answering smile had teeth in it. “Anyway, what the hell does ‘perfect’ even mean?” Unbidden, an image of Munakata’s smugly knowing smile flashed across his mind, and he couldn’t help but let out a soft ‘ch’ in reaction. “Sounds like it’d be pretty annoying.”
Fushimi made another of those amused huffs. “For once, we agree. Not that it’s exactly what I meant.”
Yata snorted at that. “So? Just say what you mean, then. Not that hard.”
“I wonder about that,” Fushimi murmured, almost as if to himself. There was a slightly sardonic edge tipping up the corner of his smile.
“Whatever – suit yourself.” This wasn’t a conversation he felt like having anyway. Fushimi was intriguing – mysterious, kind of cool, more attractive than Yata felt like admitting – but trying to piece together what he meant half the time seemed like a headache and a half. Yata deliberately changed the subject instead of pushing it. “Anyway, what’s your realm even like? D’you live in houses and all? How ’bout shops and fun stuff?”
“Like I said, it’s a reflection of yours,” Fushimi answered him lazily, still meeting Yata’s gaze with lidded eyes. “Most of it’s going to be the same. Just without any kind of food products.” His smirk widened again. “That’s what we take contracts for, after all.”
There it was again – that immediate, uncomfortable sensation of white-hot attraction flaring to life in response to the mix of threat and interest in Fushimi’s gaze. He couldn’t deny that the combination was hitting pretty much all of his points.
Damnit. He really did like the allure of that mystery – that edge of danger, being unable to predict…
It was frustrating just the same – especially since he knew Fushimi could feel his uncontrolled reaction. Yata scowled back, jerking his eyes away from that tempting expression. “Fucking creepy bastard…”
Fushimi’s answering hum was a mix of amused and mocking, but he didn’t respond.
Not like Yata didn’t know exactly what he wasn’t saying. “I can tell that you’re lying, you know.” It didn’t even need to be voiced, and it still pissed him off. He let out his breath in a sharp rush, irritation seeping through in his brain. Fushimi was too damn good at pushing his buttons – in more ways than one.
Why the hell does he have to keep doing that? It’s fucking annoying.
He was still trying to settle that agitation when stone in his hand grew warm, and Yata felt his fingers twitch – a telltale warning. “Hey, so this is gonna be done pretty soon,” he pointed out, relieved to have a reason to steer back into neutral territory again. “For now, anyway – I mean, if we overcharge it, it’ll probably crack.”
“Of course it would.” The tone of that was sardonic. Fushimi waved a hand, the laptop disappearing from in front of him, and rose gracefully. “I’m assuming based on the information we have so far that coming back here and expecting to charge it again won’t work.”
Yata shut his eyes and raised his face to the sun for a moment, catching that strong energy. There was a particular feel to it – something that felt familiar. Something uniquely ‘Homra’, in a way. All the spots are gonna feel different, huh? It sorta made sense; you didn’t just cram a moonstone full of sunlight and hope it worked. There had to be a trick to it. “Yeah, probably.”
Fushimi clicked his tongue. “That would be too good to be true, wouldn’t it?” He spread his wings, as if stretching in preparation for the next stage. “Well, I wouldn’t have wasted my time mapping that strategy out if I really thought it’d be that easy.”
Yeah, he seemed like the kind of guy who’d get pissy about wasted time. Yata pushed himself to his feet, being careful to keep the moonstone in direct sunlight while it finished its charge. “So now what?”
“Find more charging points, obviously.” Fushimi’s voice was low and flat. “We’ll probably have to search the same areas over again depending on whether it’s day or night, because the opposing charge won’t be noticeable.” He narrowed his eyes, frown deepening. “For now, let’s comb through a few to see if we can locate at least one more that’s sunlight – then we can go back there tomorrow or whenever the stone is ready again.”
“Oh.” It seemed simple when he put it like that. Yata scratched his head. “Right, yeah.”
Fushimi clicked his tongue. “Unfortunately, unlike you, I’m not terribly good at ‘feeling’ moonlight.” The frown shifted almost to a scowl. “We’re probably going to have to spend more time at night making sure. What a pain…”
“Nah, it’s cool,” Yata cut in. When Fushimi turned to look at him, he shrugged. “I’m good with moonlight too. I’ll find the spots.”
The thin brows above Fushimi’s eyes furrowed. “How are you – ?” He stopped, eyes flickering briefly to the wings extending from Yata’s back. “Right. Of course you are.”
“Comes in handy sometimes.” Yata shot him a grin in response, feeling a bit smug about it. “Anyway, you got this strategy thing figured out – that’s your bit.” He straightened, making a fist with his free hand and pointing the thumb at his chest. “Leave the finding and the charging to me.”
Fushimi narrowed his eyes further, as if looking for holes in that assertion. “I’ll still have to be the one charging the sunstone,” he pointed out, after a brief pause.
“Yeah, I get it – moon aspect and all, right? Still, though.” Yata shrugged, fully confident. “I can help you out with the timing. That’s what I’m good at.”
There was another of those significant-seeming pauses, during which he could swear he saw wariness in the gaze that held his. Then Fushimi was clicking his tongue again, expression souring. “It’s not like I have a choice,” he muttered. “I don’t have that kind of so-called skill.”
“Heh.” Yata let his grin widen into a smirk. “So what you’re saying is I can do something you can’t, right?”
If anything, Fushimi’s expression grew even sourer at that. “I’m not sure why that makes you so proud of yourself.”
“What? Don’t like admitting you’re not the best at everything?” Yata let his grin show teeth. He was about to push further, but the stone in his hand suddenly grew hot, nearly burning. “Huh, seems like this one is done, anyway.” He closed his fingers around it, feeling the surface start to cool marginally as it pulled back from the breaking point. “That’s it for the first charge, I guess!”
“Only eleven more to go,” Fushimi remarked sardonically, clicking his tongue yet again. “At least it seems like a simple task once we actually find the charging points.” He unfolded his wings. “That spell you cast on us should last at least until dusk, right? Let’s go south first and work our way up and around.”
“Hey, don’t act like you’re in charge here.” Yata shot him a bit of a frown, tucking the moonstone into his pocket again. “At least ask me or something, c’mon!”
“You’re ridiculous.” Fushimi let out an impatient sigh; when he spoke again, his tone was flat. “Fine. What do you think about going south first and working our way up and around?”
Yata squashed the tiny bit of annoyance that came with the tone, repeating a mantra of ‘not worth it’ in his head. “Yeah, yeah.” He spread his own wings. “Fine – let’s go.”

Any suggestions on good high risk policies that insure motorcycles?

Totaled car... Will insurance pay off loan?
I am pretty sure that I totaled my car yesterday. I hadnt even had it for a month yet, but I had got an auto loan from my bank to purchase the car. Since I only had it for such a short time, I hadn't even begun to pay on the loan for the car. If it is definitely declared totaled by the claims adjuster from my insurance company, is it likely that my insurance will pay off the whole loan? Can I get liability insurance if I do a roll over?
I'm currently financing a vehicle and I simply can't afford it anymore. I'm considering doing a trade in for a cheaper car. I would be trading in my car which has a higher value than the car. So there will still be a finance going on but it would be a rollover. Will the other technically be paid off meaning that I'd be able to get liability on it? I just need to lower my payments because it's too much to handle right now so even some ways that I can lower my payments or insurance would be nice.
Best Dental Insurance Plan?

[Fillings, crowns, extractions, etc.] Does anyone know of what the best insurance plan would be for me? Please help me find plans that do not require waiting periods, so I can get work done ASAP! Also, from what I briefly read, most of the plans only pay like a Maximum of $1000 per calendar year, which really isn't very much. Dental work costs a lot of money! I wasn't in the car. I let them go pick up a friend, they were on a semi busy street. My friend was walking up the street and my friend driving the car pulled over with the hazards on to let him in. 10 seconds after getting in the car and closing the door someone slams into the back of my car going between 40-60 mph in a 35mph zone. Totaled other driver's car. My rear end is completely crumpled, but still drivable. I haven't got it checked yet, waiting for the police to contact me in a couple days. Looks like it crumpled all the way to the rear of the frame so it may be bent or busted, so they might say it's totaled. Farmers Insurance problem when changed from CA to OR?
Hi, I've had insurance in CA for 2 years and moved to Oregon recently. I had my insurance tranferred with an useless Farmers Agent in OR. The thing is I already paid my 6 months premium in CA which is covered me until 06/2009. I paid nearly $450 for until 06/29. I got a bill for next 6 months from that agent saying that I have to pay $1000, since I haven't lived in Oregon for long enough. Jeez!!!. It's almost a $600 rise in my insurance that too I haven't had any claims or ticket in my last 5 years. I went to meet him in person but he told that's all he can do it. He didn't look my CA policy/discounts too. Then I told him, I can get $500 insurance anywhere else. But he challenges me if I could get something like that. I haven't approached any other insurers yet. Is it anything like insurance history or something like that maintained nationwide or in Oregon? Does he threaten me based on somre record? Can I get some decent insurance from someother insurers/agents? In CA I've never paid my 6 months permium more than $450. I'm the only driver for my car and the car is 8 years old. I've never claimed from any insurance till date. I neither had any speeding tickets elsewhere. Can I get some insurance for some decent rate If I shop around? i have just passed my driving test for a full license in the UK, i am 18, male and after looking at several different websites (some comparison ones and some direct ones) i have found that for what is considered a good first car (no more than a 1.2 engine) i am likely to be paying the minimum of 4000! and this is just for third party and theft. i am wondering if there is any way i can get this number down.. can anyone suggest a good insurance company or anything like the pass plus that will lower it by a reasonable amount? or even a specific car that is generally cheaper than others. any help would be appreciated!""

Which is cheaper ? Insurance on a small or mid size truck?
My son will be getting his license in a year and a half. I am thinking of going ahead & buying a used truck for him, and he can practice in it when he gets his learner's permit. He would like a truck. I have been encouraging him to get a smaller one, like a Toyota since it will be cheaper on gas, If I let him get a bigger one, like a mid size Chevy, would the insurance be cheaper. Where would I save more money--on a more fuel-efficient truck or a bigger one with cheaper insurance? I am thinking of 93-96 model years.""

My wife has been allowing her father to use her car to work as a pizza delivery man while his car is getting fixed. We don't have her car listed as a business vehicle, but he says that if he wrecks it his insurance will cover it. I'm not sure if he is correct or not, but I don't know the law in Georgia. I'm afraid he'll get in a wreck and we'll get sued or have our insurance policy canceled. Is he correct? Thanks.""

Cheapest 125cc Bike to insure?
Im a 17 year old male, no provisional or no CBT. I am hoping to pass my CBT around october-november when im 18. I wanted to know whats the best bike to have and also the price ranges? id much rather a 'sporty' looking bike as apposed to others. I had my eye on a Varadero 125, hyosung GT125r or a yamaha yzf r125. The aprilia rs125 is nice but ive heard its expensive to insure? So if anyone knows the price ranges that would be great, or if any suggestions on a suitable bike that would also be appreciated. I live in the rhondda valleys, have no criminal record, could keep the bike locked up out back, if any of that helps? i know insurance is tricky but i just want to know which ball park i stand in. Thanks.""

Insurance and car accident.?
I was involved in an accident in which I struck a vehicle in the rear on 11/15/2004. It was not a bad collision and I was starting to walk-up to ask the driver of the other vehicle if he was okay, when a car rear-ended me and then two more cars hit that vehicle pushing my jeep under the vehicle which I had hit causing severe damage in excess of $3500. My insurnce payed the driver I hit, but I have not received a dime from farmers insurance. I placed a call to the insured vehicle that strcuk me and they told me to use my insurance company to hash-out all the details and to collect funds for repair my vehicle. I told this to my insurance agent (Progressive) and they said they would do that but I didn't have full coverage so that will not happen, I need to deal with the other partie's insurance companies. I have no Idea where to go from here. If I had the money, I would get a lawyer and I am sure that I would have this resolved right now. Does anyone have an idea for me? peace""

Hello! Recently, I was involved in a car accident where the other driver was at fault (carelessly ran a red light) and didn't have insurance; my question is what do I do now. My car got totaled, but my insurance is going to pay me the whole value it's worth, but minus a deductible. Also, my sister and I are going to a back doctor because of some minor pains we started getting... People are telling me that I should do a small claims against the guy, but what exactly do I sue him for? And how? More info: He had no insurance, and the car wasn't his. How can you convince your parents to allow you to get your own car?
We went to the Ford Dealer and there was a 2007 Ford Taurus SE. The dealer wanted $8700.00 that is with tax. So I test drove it and took it to a mechanic nearby and the car checked out fine. My mom and stepfather went into the finance department and I waited in the room adjacent to them. The bad part is that I couldn't get the car because they had a small discussion about how much gas, insurance, and maintenance the car will cost. So I left the ford dealer with no car. My mom said because I am a young man I could buy my own car and take on the responsibility of a young man. I told her can she please do it and I will pay her back over the years. She said no and my stepfather said come on man lets go home. I felt a little embarrassed because everyone in the lounge was looking at me. So how can I convince my mom and stepfather to buy me this car.""
