But the point of all this is to say, I think saying "I love you" to close friends and (adoptive) families should be normalized and when people hear it, they know the person is saying it in a platonic way instead of jumping to the conclusion it's a declaration of romantic love. Contrary to popular belief, platonic love can be just as powerful and beautiful (if not more so) as romantic love.]
