Well, I did it, folks! I finished Emergency!

I have so much I want to say about this show. First, I finally understand what people mean when they say they have a comfort show! I affectionately think of it as my Silly Little Show About Paramedics. I loved the characters. I love how it successfully pulled off episodes on the serious side, and lighthearted ones. And—this is absolutely not surprising—I adored Johnny and Roy’s friendship. There’s so much more I could say about this show, and probably will. I was very surprised to see how much content there is here for a show that came out over 50 years ago and look forward to becoming an active part of this fandom :)

It wouldn’t feel right to make a post about emergency! without mentioning michael norell. i hope his loved ones are receiving so much support right now. i teared up reading through the comments on his obituary and seeing how many people were inspired by his performance as captain stanley. i hope he knew how many people he inspired and continues to inspire. i hope everyone involved in the show knows how many people they inspired. this show came out 32 years before i was born and yet it’s become one of my favorites. i’m so happy it’s a part of my life. if you haven’t watch emergency! you absolutely should. and if you have then…watch it again. that’s what i’m doing because i’m not through loving my Silly Little Show About Paramedics just yet.

so this is actually super dumb, but it’s a name I came up with when I was still in elementary school and it’s actually a gummy bear reference bc it’s “żelka” in Polish and it was my favorite type of candy 😅; actually I’ve been kinda thinking that I should change it because some minecraft streamer started using the same name and got somewhat popular, making finding my stuff way harder; but at this point I got too used to it since people know me by this name and often call me “Zel” and also I'm too tired to do something about it at this point 🙄 also I’m stubborn

2020 July Update

Things have gone slowly... again.

The good news is that the game is now submitted to the console "authority" and it's entirely off my hands. Once it gets through the console "checking" process, it can get a release date and we can sprint towards release. Until then, it'd be at least a month's wait or more until I hear anything. Understandably, their checking process is impacted by Corona, so wait times are increased.

On my end, I was also slow to submit the game. I submitted it late late June, since I ended up spending 7 weeks fixing bugs (and not 2-3 weeks like I estimated in the last blog post). There were just SO many bugs - now squished, thankfully. Since this is a blog post, I'll talk about what kind of bugs I've been fixing.

The other thing that slowed down the submission process was simply due to unfamiliarity with how these submissions proceed. There were pages and pages of stuff to read, guidelines to follow, and legalese to wade through. It really made me wish I had a publisher to guide me through the process. But I was able to clear it with a couple days work. I had an impression that the submission process went like A->B->C->D, with no room for concurrency. Turns out I could have done steps B & C at the same time and sped things up by 2 weeks... So that's that. I'm taking that as a lesson for next time.

The Console Revealed

What is this console that I talk about so stealthily? So that this blog update isn't completely unexciting, I'll reveal which console I've been working on until now. Drumroll please!

It's Switch!

We actually got the Switch dev kit in late 2017. From my understanding, around this time in the USA, the Switch kit was quite hard to get for indies as it was just starting out and high in demand. So I was surprised that my application got approved. I didn't know it then, but the game would still need a few more years of development...

Tweaking performance and fixing bugs

Here you can see my "expert" playtest setup. Since the Switch is more powerful while docked, I needed to playtest it in handheld mode, so I could catch and profile any problem areas where the framerate was unsteady. The most common thing that caused framerate drops were areas that went overboard with lighting. For these areas, I'd tweak or swap out the lights with alternatives that looked similar while also being less computationally intensive. Maintaining 60 FPS is a must!

An old camera (Nikon D3100) trained at the screen recorded my playthrough and would let me rewind to any moment a bug occurred. It could only record in 10 minute chunks, so I'd have to repeatedly repress the record button. On the plus side, because it's so old the movie file sizes were small and convenient.

The number one bug that I tracked and fixed in the past two months was what I dub the "Gear Ring De-equip" bug. The Gear Ring functions as customizable shortcut keys for the player to map items and tools (see an old video demonstration HERE). Through regular use of the inventory, somehow the equipped items on the Gear Ring would be de-equipped. It was an elusive bug since the de-equip event would happen very quietly and you would only suspect something had gone wrong much later. By then, the trail had gone cold and you weren't sure if a de-equip had actually occurred or if the player had simply de-equipped the item themselves. Two other playtesters noted that something left the Gear Ring in their playthrough, but I dismissed them. "Are you sure you didn't just de-equip it yourself?" It was a bug that bred mistrust and discord. I didn't truly believe it until it happened to me...

Luckily, with the camera setup, I was finally able to track it. In the literal 67th video, I caught a live instance of the bug occurring. After which, it was all too easy to recreate the exact same inventory and gear ring setup and replicate it.

(With this exact item layout, combine the 2nd item with the 14th item... and viola! Gear Ring de-equip!)

After fixing this bug, I then proceeded to fix it 5 more times. Every time I fixed it, it would later reappear through a different mechanism. 

Why do bugs like this happen? Underneath, there are two lists of items. Tools on the right and items on the left. Items can occur multiple times because they're consumable. Both lists start counting their indexes with the value 0. However, both items and tools co-exist on the gear ring. So to uniquely identify an entry you need both the item ID and the data index. Failure to check both data types resulted in bugs like the Gear Ring de-equip. Now throw in a bunch of item operations that can confuse the system. You can split items, combine items, swap items, or discard items. The more freedom you allow, the more ways there are for the system to trip up.

If you didn't get all that, that's alright. It was needlessly complicated. Imagine doing more and better and with less code and less bugs! Such a thing is possible if you start with the right design. I'm definitely taking notes here on how to design inventory systems for next time. In the meanwhile, I'm very confident I've squished all inventory related bugs.

Other bugs squashed and features implemented in the past 2 months include the end game arts not unlocking properly, collection percentages climbing beyond 100, stray doors floating in the sky, low HP sfx blaring when loading different files, balance tweaks on bosses, a max HP display when the menu is open - too many to count really! It was only after I fixed them all that I was confident enough to move forward with submitting the game. I apologize for the delay this will cause!

PC version back in progress

You may recall in the March 2020 update I talk about how in pursuing the Switch version, I unwittingly ruined the PC version. Well, since the game is "done" now and I'm waiting for it to go through the checking process, I've started working to reclaim the PC version.

And there is some good news to report. The PC version can compile again! Of course, it will need to have some work done, since it was late 2017 when I last had a functioning PC build. 

The opening menu is broken, the underlying save file system needs to be updated, and the controls... oh Lord, the controls. Controls were probably the #1 factor in pushing me to pursue a console version first. There are just so many controller options. Even just the usual suspects are numerous: Xbox, Nintendo, Sony, Logitech, Hori, 8Bitdo, Steam...

One of the number one complaints received regarding the flash game (which was keyboard primarily) was that I didn't allow controller rebinding to start. It was then that I learned of the vast array of different keyboard types.

(Ever heard of an Azerty keyboard?)

I shan't make the same mistake twice! One of the things I'll definitely tackle is the Right/Left face button feud when it comes to which should one should be 'confirm' and which one is 'cancel'. I want to allow the player to choose which is their "YES" and "NO" preference and allow that to overlap other actions like Attack or Jump.

Even after control bindings are taken care of, some things just won't translate well. The right control stick is currently used to access the gear ring and for fishing. Keyboards have no right stick. Aiming the crossbow with a full 360 degrees of range is done with the left control stick - if keyboard only, would the crossbow simply be locked to the 8 cardinal directions? What about those tutorial prompts with button graphics (e.g. "Press 'B' to Jump"). If using the playstation controller, it'd need to be the CROSS symbol. How many button graphics are we gonna load into the text module? What if the player, mid-playthrough, decides to swap out controllers? Indeed, there are many issues to tackle where controls are concerned...

Perhaps I'm overthinking it because even some AAA games get this wrong (Dark Souls has 'B' as 'Yes' on Switch, and it's not remappable, which I find quite annoying). I've seen games on consoles where the controls wouldn't mention the console's controller at all but instead mention a mouse and keyboard. Or, if you remapped the controls, the tutorial prompts still showed the old control bindings, making for a confusing experience. I definitely want to do the controls justice, so this will take some time.

Fan Arts

We have five new fanart submissions this time around from regulars and new alike.

Cody G. returns with this pair of sketches of Gail. One seeks to answer the question, "how is Gail so strong?" Cody's answer is that under her sleeves she's actually really buff! This might be the most ripped rendition of Gail yet. Also, in the right drawing, the letter 'E' kinda melds with her bat, making it look like a keyblade!

What if Gale was a Shrek character? A new artist, Samu Kajin, from tumblr answers that question with a rendition of Gail sporting ogre style antennae. Samu Kajin says she can be called "Gaek" or "Shrale". I like the poncho!

Shafiyahh returns with a pretty portrait of Gail. Unlike their previous digital pieces, this one was made with color pencils! I like how her hair blends pink and purple colors together, and this pattern is also present in the eyes. Reminds me of a certain character. And the eyes are so sparkly despite using color pencils! Major props!

Negativus Core also returns with this relevant image of Gail, masked and running, presumably from Corona. It gave me quite a chuckle! I like the angle and tilt of this run pose because you can see the sole of her foot - that's how you know she's at full sprint! A skillful blur localized to her left foot show's just the right amount of motion. Gotta love the robot's expression too!

A rare 3D art has emerged. Dany Q crafted this adorable figure of Gail that is as cute as a button! I like how well it translates the pixel character over to 3D, capturing the 3 stitches on her shirt and even catching her stray strand of hair. It kinda reminds me of a Wallace and Gromit character, so I can picture it moving and animating in that unique claymation style.

Next Time

I'm ~80% confident we can clear the Switch console checking process and drop the trailer with a release date before the next blog post. But once again, if things go slowly, you'll hear from us in 2 months...

I had so much fun drawing these! They are just so cute and made me smile whenever I worked on it. I also got to design villager Tomas and animal Janus & Remus!

Remus was an easy pick, rat man! It was fun working with those low key eye bleeding colors XD 

Janus was a difficult choice. I wanted to make him a snake, but to give him limbs would just make him into a lizard. Then I remembered a character from one of the older games, Blanca! The idea of a character who could have the player draw her face, fit snake man pretty well.

I got inspired this past month or so, which lead to many Sander Sides fan art! First up, the main four as animal crossing animals!

First up is my main boy, Virgil. I designed him as a bat, as a cat didn’t feel quite right and all the other animals also didn’t fit right to me. So I made a bat! I think it turned out really cute.

Next is Roman! Making him a deer was super easy for me, since deer are known as the prince of the forest, gives him a mini Disney refence of Bambi, and because Diana exists and I can see those too as besties

Smart man next, Logan! I’ve seen designs of Logan as a bird and I found that it fit him very well. I tried for a mix of a raven and a cockatoo, since raven’s are the smartest birds and I confused cockatoos with gray parrots who are also very smart. I really liked coming up with his black blue feathers and drawing the simple wings.

And we got Blue from Blue’s Clues, I mean, Patton. Yep, he looks a lot like Blue and I didn’t catch it until it was too late and I got attached. Though, with Patton being all about memories and childhood comforts, I think it works. He also come out really cute!

2017 year review

I am late yet again with this! 😅  2017 was ... a pretty crap year. BUT I made the most of my situation by travelling around Australia doing the most conventions I’ve ever done, growing my following and earning a nice friendly profit! More under the cut ~ (warning, starts off very mopey)

So continuing on from 2016, I was a what they call a ‘job seeker’ .. which means earning a small amount of money to cover rent and bills while applying for 20 jobs a month, only getting a handful of interviews and being rejected by every single one :))) This was extremely frustrating because each interview required a lot of anxiety just to hype myself up to go, and then hearing the same ‘sorry there were better candidates’ or -nothing at all- resulted in even more anxiety and breakdowns, and the whole thing was just a repetitive cycle that made me less and less confident each time.

(I’ve decided to use kittens to convey emotion in this post lol)

In April I was called back to (what’s left of) P55 Studios for some concept work, but it was only a 1 month contract and it took them 6 months to finally pay me for the work I did. It was fun, but man ..I hope they pick up their game soon ... it’s sad to see the state they’re in now.

I was then basically punished for ‘not finding a fulltime job quickly enough’ - the job centre shoved me into a warehouse sorting old clothes 9-5 with next to no breaks, alongside a bunch of ex criminals who were extremely unpleasant and rude to me. The dust made it hard to breathe, most of the clothes had gross stains on them as well as spiders hiding in them. After having another breakdown and being taken to hospital and a psychologist because I freaked some people out, I decided it would be best to go back to being a student and trying to learn more things for my resume, because a University Degree is apparently worth nothing in this world :/

AFTER THAT DECISION, THINGS REALLY PICKED UP! 😅

I did a 6 month IT and Web Technologies course, which was really good! I learnt quite a lot of things including HTML, and I was able to finally make a professional online portfolio with my own domain name ^_^ (tessmontyart.com)

While that was all going on, I was also managing my Etsy store and tabling at conventions, both of which are becoming quite successful which makes me happy! Other than that I’ve just been drawing and drawing and drawing. I’m pretty sure I’ve drawn the most in 2017 than any other year, and I can see my art slowly but surely improving, which is something I’ve been longing for!

I tabled at the most conventions in 2017 too. I did Melbourne Supanova, Central Coast Comicon, Sydney Supanova, Nexus Con, SMASH, Adelaide Supanova as well as 2 local markets. I had a lot of fun with those and am planning to go to even more in 2018! 

Other highlights include:

⭐️ I made my first ever vinyl sticker sets!

⭐️  I made my first ever enamel pins!

⭐️  I made these adorable Nifflers in mini Jars!

⭐️ among a whole load of new products!!

⭐️  I hit 600 followers on Instagram and Facebook! 

⭐️  I successfully completed another Inktober! I failed 2016s because I was in New York and didn’t have time (a fair excuse! I wanna go back)

⭐️  During that inktober I created a new OC, a robo catgirl! I definitely want to draw her more in 2018 :) 

⭐️ I had a go at Livestreaming for the first time! It is such a good way to get stuff done o_o knowing people are watching so you don’t procrastinate lol ..

⭐️ I also started making time-lapse videos, which have become quite popular!

⭐️ I started Fanart Fridays (which I gotta get back into again!)

⭐️ I road tripped all the way from Sydney to Melbourne and back for the first time :D (thats 545.3 miles!)

⭐️ I got to meet @katiecrooked for the 2nd time and actually hang out for a few days rather than 1 hour ;w; You are amazing and I’m so lucky to have such a great friend!

⭐️ I also got to meet up with the Japanese exchange student I hosted way back in 2011! My Japanese is much worse now but her english has improved so much, I’m so proud TwT

⭐️  I went to CHOCOLATE HIGH TEA

⭐️ Tried a raindrop cake for the first time :0

⭐️ Lights released the most amazing album in the world ‘Skin & Earth’ *_* 

⭐️ Owl City is finally releasing more music! (The cover of “Waving Through A Window” and sneak peaks of the new Cinematic album made me so happy!)

⭐️ The year Hatsune Miku turned 10!

⭐️ I got this cute bag for my birthday and so did my new friends resulting in this adorable pic:

⭐️ I became obsessed with washi tape

⭐️ Became obsessed with Mystic Messenger

⭐️The year Prisoner Zero finally became available on Netflix (the 2D animated series I worked on in 2015/2016)

⭐️ It was another year of cute dates and sweet things with a sweet partner 💖

⭐️ I also got to try Teppanyaki for the first time!

⭐️ I made these cute gingerbread cookies! (my first time making gingerbread)

⭐️ And I made these cute christmas ornaments for my friend of her 2 doggies ^_^

On a sadder note ...

2017 was the year I met my partner’s grandma for the first and last time. She had a birthday party at the start of the year (my first visit to a place called Scone) and she passed away later in the year :( I had to go to my 2nd ever funeral ... it was at a really lovely country town I have never been to called Canowindra. Rest in Peace ♥️

What’s coming in 2018?

I am crossing my fingers for an animation job I applied for a while ago - one of the ladies who used to work at P55 is now working at a bigger animation company and planning to open up another studio near where I live. I wont find out for a while, cause new workplaces take a while to set up, but that would be really amazing if I were to work with her and the old animation gang again. 

Whether anything happens with that or not, I’ll be studying certificate IV of the IT course (like a continuation), and I plan to do even more conventions. Hopefully I can get into Oz Comic Con (they have a selective application process) which is 3 extra conventions if they don’t clash with anything else! (Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne). 

There’s also other conventions I hadn’t heard of until it was too late to apply that I’m keen to apply for like Animaga in Melbourne, as well as Madman Anime Fest in Brisbane and Melbourne. I also want to make a lot more non-fandom things for market stalls, as well as a comic and zines!

Hopefully I’ll hit 1k followers on fb/ig? :D that will make me feel important lol

I’m also hoping to go on a holiday this year. I seemed to go on some sort of holiday (either domestic or overseas) every year up until now xD; Sounds greedy but I really miss the feel of holidays you know??

And here we are! Another March 26th, another of Gladiator’s anniversaries has come. What a Fourth Anniversary it has been, eh? Thanks to every last one of you for your support through these years, and through this week too as I posted the collection of fanarts seen above!

Under the cut, one of my long-winded ramblings, this time about the story that has changed my life beyond belief.

Admittedly, this hasn’t been an easy year. Personally, I’ve had some struggles with my surroundings, with school lately, with circumstances that often overwhelm me.

Not everything goes right, in fact, most things won’t unless you actively work to make it so, and even then there’s a chance things might fail, too. Nothing is as frustrating as putting your life and soul into something, and being told that it’s not good enough. It’s happened a lot to me, more often as time goes by, actually.

Amidst this chaos, with these struggles of so many different natures, there’s one place I can run to where I can forget everything that plagues me. Where I can give myself away completely, invest all my energies into it, and regardless of what people may think later on, I will still feel that every effort was worth it. And that one place, that one haven I have left, is undoubtedly Gladiator.

From the start, I’ve written and posted fics because I hoped, somehow, that they might reach people who would enjoy them. I haven’t said it a lot, but in the middle of writing Origins of Pro-Bending I had a brief crisis in regards of fanfiction, where I ended up asking myself why was I doing it at all? Did anyone really want to read this? Why would they, when there were likely so many other better fics and writers out there?

I told myself to finish that story, though, not because of desperate hopes that someone out there would read it one day and validate it by saying “Oh, this is the best story EVER!”, but for a very much simpler reason: I wanted to finish it. I wanted to see the final product. I wanted it to exist, if just so that I could go back to it one day in the future and enjoy it fully all over again. Maybe nobody else would read it, but as long as it mattered to me, it meant it mattered to someone. That view counter could stay in 0, but the story would have been told. And that was what I needed the most.

The same mentality is what guides me with Gladiator: I knew it would be the largest project I’d undertaken in my entire life (and indeed it is), I knew it would take me FOREVER to finish it (and indeed, four years have gone by, but this story is still not done, clearly!). I was warned by so many people about the possible negative consequences of writing it: you get used to the initial hype, but the people who’re supporting you now won’t support you forever. Some might be gone tomorrow, others in two years, others in ten. You won’t be in the limelight forever, and if you lose courage because of that, you’ll lack the strength to finish this huge-ass story that you’ve put so much work into and everything will have been for nothing.

So with all the potential problems, with all the possible drawbacks (I probably could have been a way better student in school if I hadn’t taken up such a time-consuming project, yes...), I still told every last one of them that I wanted to do it. That I would keep doing it, no matter what.

Yes, there’s been hard times, and yes, there have been moments where I’ve doubted myself as a writer, as a human being even, as ANYTHING, because of the responses my stories can get. Yes, I’ve struggled with motivation a few times when people who used to love this story passionately now seem mostly disinterested in it, and I can’t help but wonder where did I go wrong. I’ve learned sometimes you don’t go wrong at all, that people just move on... but maybe I did go wrong somehow, too. Maybe I did.

But even then, I can’t let go of this. I cannot stop writing this story, and I won’t stop until I reach the final scene. It’s the first story that has made me laugh so much, the first story that brought me to serious tears while writing it, the story that seems to bring together absolutely everything I’ve learned through life, where everything I am is reflected. Maybe this story isn’t half as big a deal as I make it to be, but for me it’s more than just a story. For me it’s more than just the longest Avatar fanfic on FF.net, it’s more than just a ship manifiesto, it’s more than a hobby I dedicate myself to when I have some time off.

I’ve been asked how I do it. How do I have so much motivation, how can I write such a long story and not stop, not get tired, not get bored? There’s a ton of answers I can give to this question (one of them being, of course, that my passion for the two characters who drive my story is responsible for all that motivation). But the truth is, I live in a place where I am used to seeing misery, pain, horrors every day. I see a city decaying around me day by day, a country in collapse, with next to no hopes for something to break its fall. Things aren’t easy here, and worse obstacles pop up every day, too. I’d rather not go in depth about the Venezuelan crisis, but all the same...

What keeps me sane, in this insanity, is Gladiator. Reality can outdo fiction in many ways, but my reality falls short in many regards, and I’m powerless to change it. But whenever those overwhelming waves of depression start climbing up, trying to drown me, I find myself afloat again because I still have to write so much more! I have so many stories plotted, so many story arcs, so much content that I can’t wait to produce. Because Azula still needs to become the greatest of all Fire Nation leaders, because Sokka still needs to end the war and make sure his people stay safe and sound. Because Zuko has to find what life means for him, because Suki has finally found happiness after all the sorrows she has seen, because Rui Shi needs to tell Song how he feels, because Ozai and Ursa’s past need to be revealed. Because all these characters need to bring back balance to the world that lost it, and they will only do it if I write it. This story won’t tell itself, and I don’t mind it: I want to tell it. I want to explore every last bit of it, and every new Word doc I open to write more chapters is a blank page I can’t wait to start filling. 

I’m not the greatest writer ever, regardless of the people who may say so, regardless of how many readers may think highly of my skills. I could be better, no doubt, and that’s why I keep going back to the story, to fix all that can be fixed, to make it the best it can be. The best I can make it as I am. I will continue to grow as a writer, or at least, I’ll try to. I will grow as an artist too, hopefully, and continue to accompany the fic with as many of my drawings as I can.

It may sound insane, it probably is. But regardless if that’s not the case for anyone else, this story is more than a story for me: this story is my release, my opportunity to dream, to imagine, to believe, to feel so many things that I’ve been numbed to in my daily life. Gladiator sets me free. Gladiator is a part of me, and I’m sure it will continue to be for the rest of my life. I love this story more than words can say. And as it was when it came to Origins of Pro-Bending, writing Gladiator already is its own reward. Any and every companion who comes along for the ride is a great friend to have by my side in this quest: Whether they stay or they go, I’m glad they were here for however long they were.

Thank you, to everyone who has been here, everyone who still stays by my side, everyone who may come in the future. This story exists because a stubborn, reckless girl decided one day that she wanted to dedicate herself to something a thousand times larger than she was. Something that, she hoped, would be cherished by those who might be compelled by the story of a Princess and a Gladiator falling in love, who will do everything in their power to right the wrongs of the world they live in.

There’s still a long road ahead, and a challenging one at that. My life may be very different by the next of the story’s anniversaries, but I’m sure that I will still be here, and that I will continue to tell this story. And I will be grateful forever that I get to be the unbelievably fortunate writer with the privilege of bringing this story together. The sum of my life’s decisions have brought me to this day, and I find myself filled with gratitude, relief, peace. I know I chose the right course, and I will continue to tread it as I go. I will carry on writing this story, for however long as it may take me to finish it, and I will continue to be grateful to no end for that one PM that started it all, that gave me the incomparable opportunity of becoming the writer of Gladiator.

1: when you have cereal, do you have more milk than cereal or more cereal than milk?

NO MILK IS COMING ANYWHERE NEAR MY CEREAL!  Like, I’ll drink milk in a glass, but I’m not mixing it w/ cereal.  The taste makes me nauseated & the texture is awful.  Plus, let’s be honest, most of the time I eat from the box, so…..  

Old Habits Die Hard.

2: do you like the feeling of cold air on your cheeks on a wintery day?

Yes & No.  It’s kinda refreshing, but at the same time, sometimes the cold aggravates teeth & jaw pain.  

3: what random objects do you use to bookmark your books?

Reciepts, random pieces of paper or napkins/kleenexes, any small object (paper weight, stress ball thing, eraser, pencil, rock, etc.) or piece of clothing  (Beanie, Jacket Sleeve, etc.).

W/ the amount of Bookmarks I have, you would think that I wouldn’t need to do this.  :P

4: how do you take your coffee/tea?

I’m not really a tea or coffee person.  I’m trying to get into coffee more, I guess?  I’ll usually get flavoured espressos or lattes or Vanilla Frappuccinos from Starbucks every now & then.  

I like Raspberry Iced Tea, if that counts?  

  5: are you self-conscious of your smile?

…..I’m basically self-conscious about everything, so, yes.

6: do you keep plants?

YES!  I have no clue what I’m doing, though.  These poor plants.  I currently have some Cacti [took them in last year when the apartment next to ours abandoned them] , 2 Succulents, & a Venus Fly Trap [that I think I killed tbh].  I’m also gonna try to plant a Marigold, again.  

(Sorry for the poor image. Here’s 3 of them.   Ralph [the succulent on far right] is the one I’ve had the longest.  I’ve had him for over a year & a half now.  Here’s how he looked when I first got him.) 

7: do you name your plants?

Yes!  …..But the thing is, I’m bad at names & chronically forget them.  :P  I only remember that I named one of my Succulents  Ralph, my Venus Flytrap was/is Khaleesi, and the Marigold that I tried to grow last year was Kira  (…..as in the Kira from Bleach).  My second try at the Marigold will be called Kira 2.0 .

8: what artistic medium do you use to express your feelings?

Mainly Writing!  In the past, mostly Poetry.  I’ve been focusing more on Fanfics. lately, though.  I also sometimes indulge in some art.

Overall, poetry probably winds up being the most emotional thing for me and contains the most personal content (at least some of the time).

9: do you like singing/humming to yourself?

Rarely.  I don’t really like the sound of my voice & I get scared people will hear me.  I like to Lip-Sing, though.  

Occasionally I will hum, though.  Usually as a way to try to calm myself & get some nervous energy out.  

10: do you sleep on your back, side, or stomach?

99% of the time I go to sleep on my stomach, 1% on my side.  What I do after I pass out is anyone’s guess.  Some nights I’m very still, others not.  A fair amount of the time I’ll wake up on my back…..which is uncomfy.

11: what’s an inner joke you have with your friends?

“Hot Coals.”

In 10th grade we had to write a skit in English class for the play, “Julius Caesar.”

We were writing a scene & I was trying to lighten the mood, so I came up w/ a few lines that weren’t meant to be added to the script…..but my partners liked them and the rest is history.

12: what’s your favorite planet?

I like rooting for the Underdog, so Pluto!  

13: what’s something that made you smile today?

14: if you were to live with your best friend in an old flat in a big city, what would it look like?

Oh, boy.  Uh….. mainly however she’d like, I guess. Preferably w/ plants and some space to move around.  Not too high up.  Good Plumbing.  That kind of thing.  I don’t really know?  :P

I don’t plan on dying my hair (at least, not anytime soon), but probably Purple, Bi Pride Colours, or a Mix of Blues.

…..My memory is so bad.  What even are friends, again?  I honestly can’t remember.  I’m sure there’s something.

But, no, for actual journal, I do have several, but I haven’t used them in years.  I had a few that I meant to start, but never did, that were for like Dreams and Personal Growth and Identity Exploration.  The ones that I did do were mainly for venting or recording certain mundane events.

When I was a kid I was way more into it.  Used to have a few diaries where I would record school gossip and random events and certain desires and stuff.  And, b/c I was a weird kid, in elementary school, I used to sometimes draw what one of my crushes was wearing.

But, my Mom started reading it, so I stopped writing in them.  :)  And I never really got back into it later, mainly b/c of Trust issues.  But also b/c I got a bunch of Online Blogs now.

20: what’s your favorite eye color?

Uhhh…..Blue?  Probably?  Idk I like a lot of eye colours, tbh.  Like, Brown eyes can be really pretty & certain shades of Hazel.  

21: talk about your favorite bag, the one that’s been to hell and back with you and that you love to pieces.

Somewhere in my closet is a Purpleish-Pink & Black Backpack that I’ve had for…..idk, at least 5 years, if not longer.  It’s very sturdy & pretty.  

I trade between backpacks for school, so it’s taking a break, storing some of my things rn.

Honestly, though, I’ve had so many backpacks over the years, each w/ their own memories…..which have been mainly lost to time.

22: are you a morning person?

I’m…..a late night, early morning type person.  As in, Midnight- roughly 7 a.m. is my jam.  Waking up early, though…..I’m dead.

23: what’s your favorite thing to do on lazy days where you have 0 obligations?

Uhhhh  I think my Black Boots would be the oldest pair that I wear consistently.  I’ve had them for about 3-4 years now.  I think the oldest pair I currently have in my closet, though, are my Old Gym shoes, which, I think, are between 5-7 years old, but I haven’t really worn them since I graduated High School and no longer had the dreaded P.E.

Mmmmm  Probably Strawberry or Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream Flavour.

Sunset!  I love the Colours!

…..I’m literally almost always in a state of fear, tbh.  

But, yes, I’ve had some moments of intense fear.  Mainly phobia or trauma stuff.

31: what is your opinion of socks? do you like wearing weird socks? do you sleep with socks? do you confine yourself to white sock hell? really, just talk about socks.

I LOVE SOCKS!  I really like coloured socks & socks w/ patterns, but I’ll wear just about anything at just about any length, tbh.  I’m wearing socks more often than not, and I generally wear socks to bed  (sometimes the looser ones will fall off during the night, though).

Almost all of my socks have holes in them, tbh, b/c I’m constantly pacing.  :P  My sock drawer is bursting and unorganized.  Sometimes I just wear mix-matched socks, tbh, b/c I rarely ever put the socks w/ their mates.  I just shoove them in the drawer most of the time b/c I don’t have energy.  :P

My fav. socks are probably my Fuzzy Mint Green Pairs.  They’re nice & warm.  

Fun Fact:  I have a pair of Tie-Dye socks that I dyed myself.

32: tell us a story of something that happened to you after 3AM when you were with friends.

??? I’ve never been w/ friends at the time.  [Except for 2 sleepovers, I think, and ironically I was asleep then.]   I can literally count on my hands the amount of times I’ve seen friends outside of school.

Uh, online-wise, just-  staying up late on forums &, recently, Discord talking about a range of entertaining topics & playing games, I guess?  I don’t really have anything specific atm, sorry.  :(

He’s my most prized possession.  I’ve had him for 20 years and I still sleep w/ him.  Most of his fur is worn & he has a patch worn off of his neck b/c I used to rub him there a lot as a kid.  

My Mom got me him.  I also had another one that my Grandmother got me when I was like 3 that has a Blue Bow, but I have no clue what happened to him.  :(  We think my Baby Bro. might have had it when he was in foster care & that at some point some kid took it.

I also had a tiger one, too, but I’m not sure where they are.

Anyway, I Love Stuffed Animals so much!  They are a major comfort to me!

Dude i wish i could make a living through art like you do. I literally get tired of every job ive ever done after a while. Expect drawing. Commissions are fun and worth staying up late to complete tbh

Sorry I didn’t reply to this yesterday, I wasn’t sure how I wanted to respond to it!

To be honest whenever someone tells me they wish they could do what I do or wish they had that kind of option in their life, I tend to feel a bit guilty. In an ideal world, I’d want for everyone to be able to do the kind of work they find rewarding. In some ways I also feel like I’m not ‘working’ because I don’t hate what I’m doing, and I need to remind myself that this is actually an entirely valid option as a type of self employment.

If you want to self-employee into artwork, you should try it to see what your earnings could be. I realized it was an option for me while I was still working my retail job and would do monthly commission streams to supplement my income. I noticed pretty quickly that the amount I was making was better than my ‘actual’ job. Around that time things had also gotten pretty shitty at my job (it’s amazing how two people can ruin everything), and I had been trying to get hired into another job with a better dollar per hour rate. I decided that even if I didn’t get the job I had interviewing for that I’d still put my two weeks in either way because I was just couldn’t be at that place anymore. I ended up not getting the other job, but it was okay because I knew I could earn a decent income with my artwork.

Which is my other point- I make decent income but not great income. At this point I couldn’t afford to rent my own place for example. But I’m able to comfortably pay my current rent as someone who’s renting a room as well as save up for future plans. I had been making due with starvation wages for so long that the commission money is like a windfall for me, even though it’s not actually ‘very much’. So if you want to do art as a ‘main’ job, you should make sure it would be an option that’s financially stable ‘enough’ for you. And I should stress that it’s not as stable as it may seem. People can very easily choose to not buy my art.

Lastly, realize it’s not all just drawing fun art*. Technically speaking, you’ll be a sole proprietor business. I recently got a ‘Doing Business As’ from my county clerk so I can rearrange my bank accounts. But I also need to worry about my taxes at the end of the year, and I know a big chunk of my income is going to have to go to towards it. Since I’m no longer working for a company that deducts taxes from my wages, I’ll no longer be getting a tax return with that money. So you need to plan for that too.

I hope this helps anyone who has an interest in art. I’m not saying ‘don’t do it’, I’m just saying to be aware of what your profits be as well as your expenses.

*also it’s not all ‘fun art’ also because sometimes you have to draw things you personally don’t care for. When those occasions come up, I try to make it a situation of “I’m doing something new/different and I want to have range, which means stepping outside my comfort zone”. This is how I end up drawing fanart of things I’ve never played and have 0 interest in, or end up drawing kink art. In the end though, it’s worth what I’m being paid for it. I’ve only had to say no to art commission requests a few times, thankfully.

I'm actually sorta obsessed with drawing tiny, dabbing figures right now because I just discovered an easy way to draw dabs and…well. It’s fun?)

AWW tysm! Tbh though I get the struggle. I hated all paints for the longest time because I also had no idea how to use brushes and control the amount of water I used and ended up with shapeless blobs or super runny pics (also I’ve never actually learned how to paint or draw…a couple of short lessons when I was really little, a month(?) of lessons around last year or the year before, that’s pretty much it. So idk how to do things really lol). But I sorta-recently got obsessed with watercolor paintings (SO PRETTY) and that’s why I started ‘practicing’ (AKA watching/reading a bunch of tutorials and trying my best to remember the few things I actually learned XD). I still can’t draw stuff just with watercolors though, I need to do a light pencil sketch and then color with paint.

OK that sounds so cool but problem: My phone is a super old flip phone that I’ve had since I was eight(?), so mobile games are a no XD and my parents probably wouldn’t buy me anything that costs money (they let me play simple free RP games and dating games on the internet since those are usually fairly innocent (I mean, it’s plot/character-based stuff, almost like a manga) but not anything too 'big’ you know? If I was old enough to buy games like that with my own money I don’t think they’d care tho, as long as I didn’t get obsessed with games or anything.)

Also just realized that I’m stupid and apparently forgot that I don’t have Steam. I was going to install it but can I ask you exactly what it is/how it works, first? I’m just kinda worried about randomly installing this since I don’t quite get it yet ^^;; (sorry I can be really, really stupid when it comes to stuff like this)

THAT’S SO CUTE. Let me recommend you a game too- a free RPG/Dating game called Ascension by ImpQueen! No download, you just go to ImpQueen and play it. There are three(?) chapters. The first chapter might not be that interesting compared to other games, but the game and the story keep getting more complex as you go on :D you also get new dateable characters every chapter and the MC, Aida, is AWESOME. Also, in chapter two and three you can actually customize the main cast’s appearances, like you’d do in a dress-up game! Another cool thing is that you get different 'personality points' depending on the things you say/do, and the amount of points you have for a certain personality can change the outcomes of certain situations.

Funny thing is I thought I liked physical contact (like cuddling, hugging, hand-holding) but turns out that’s not the case XD I get super awkward when anyone who’s not my mom, dad, or my little sister/younger cousin touches me. Tbh the only person I feel comfortable with cuddling anytime, anywhere is my little sister because she’s still smol LOL

It’s definitely weird when people who aren’t that close with you try to hug you though. The only thing that can make it worse is if they gush about what a good, sweet child you are while doing it XD

He does show emotion when he’s  trying to comfort someone, but that doesn’t happen very often.  *stares at that paragraph* *dabs aggressively* 

Ah, that’s what makes it even more impressive! I mean, we had art in elementary school, but it was mostly the ‘learn stuff yourself’ kind of art. Needles to say, I didn’t learn a lot. But watercolours really are a nice way of painting, since they can have really vibrant colours, yet be serene at the same time. Most people I know who draw, watercolour or not, use sketches and references, so I don’t see anything wrong with that ^^ Just take your time to learn what you want ^^

Oh, I see! So, free, computer games for you… Well, right now, CP is the only one I can think of, but I’ll discover more in the future and share them with you when I do ^^ The only paid games I play are on my phone, since I’m too shy to ask my parents to but me otome games… I have 0 problems playing them on my own, but not a lot of people know that I play them. 

Right, steam.  It’s a gaming platform. Technically, it’s an app for the computer on which you can download games that are available in the steam store. Some are free, some are paid. 

This is how the page looks. The little green button in the upper left corner is to download the app itself, and you’ll also need to create an account.  You’ll need to give an email, but it’s only for account verification and to send you bills if you decide to buy anything. However, if you don’t buy anything, the email will mostly be useless after the verification. I mean, I don’t remember getting a spam email from them at all.  After that, just go to the search bar, type Cinderella Phenomenon. And press play the game! It should automatically download the game to the steam app and you’re good to play ^^  No worries about asking questions! It’s actually admirable how you’re so careful around the internet ^^

Oh, I’ve actually played that before! I could never finish chapter 3, though… For some reason, it keeps glitching at one scene making me unable to continue further =3= It was quite fun to play! I just don’t remember most of it anymore, since it’s been a while since i’ve played ^^;;;

Scar isn’t sure if it’s Mei’s idea of a prank or not, but he’d be slightly disappointed if it was cause he kindawantedEvanstothinkhiseyesarenice but nope he’s in denial.

From that day on, Luna learns that if she wants to get the two awkward dorks together, she’ll have to take things into her own hands. Probably goes something like this:

Luna: Evans, are you free at 5pm this Friday? Evans: Yeah, why? Luna: Scar, are you free at 5pm this Friday? Scar: Aha Luna: Great, because I’m not! Have fun you two!

I think it’s more of the ‘I like physical contact if I know the person and am close enough to them’ thingy. I mean, I have a few acquaintances who love hugs and I always shrink away from them, but with close friends, U’m sometimes the one who starts hugs. But you might also dislike contact in general, which is also fine, everyone has their own preferences ^^
