An Essay on Love in Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time
Tumblr media
Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is a movie about love in all its forms. From the love of family, friends, and neighbors, to the compassion we feel for people we have never met. The movie reminds us that love is something we continuously gain, lose, and choose, again and again. Which love is greatest? In my opinion, the answer to that question is left up to interpretation. In this essay, I will give my own personal interpretation on certain character interactions and what I believe we are meant to take away from their Rebuild portrayals.
The character I will start with is one I’ve noticed the most outrage over from people who haven’t seen the movie and read out-of-context spoilers: Kaworu Nagisa.
Kaworu is a beloved character among many Evangelion fans, especially those who are members of the LGBT+ community. He is a canonical love interest of Shinji Ikari and I want to reassure people that this final movie does not change that fact. However, it does not make the couple blatantly endgame either. This skirting around the couple might make some fans upset, and while their feelings are completely valid, I do not think they fully understand the difficulties faced by LGBT+ people in Japan, nor do they understand the way that romance is typically conveyed in Japanese storytelling. (I recommend watching “Is ‘Yuri On Ice’ Good Gay Representation?” by James Somerton for more about storytelling nuances.)
What have we been shown about Shinji and Kaworu’s love? The good news is, anything you read into the original TV series and End of Evangelion is completely true for the Rebuilds— because Kaworu is the same Kaworu. This movie proves Evangelion is a single universe set on repeat, and that Kaworu and Shinji meet each other every loop, and in each, Kaworu is trying to make Shinji happy. Within the final movie, Shinji becomes aware of the loops and chooses to break the cycle and free Kaworu from his pain.
What does the relationship between Shinji and Kaworu teach us? I believe the purpose of their love is to show the audience that first, in the words of Kaji, “love has no gender.” Second, I believe Kaworu’s love in particular is a warning about basing your own happiness solely upon another person. There are parallels drawn between Gendo/Yui and Kaworu/Shinji. Gendo could not exist without Yui, and so he was willing to destroy the world to be reunited with her. For Kaworu, it was not the destruction of humanity, but the destruction of himself that defined his tragedy. What’s important within the final movie, in my opinion, is that Shinji does not reject Kaworu’s love. With the insight he’s gained from remembering past loops, he sees Kaworu’s love and appreciates him, but he also sees his suffering and wants to ease it. He helps Kaworu into a new world where he can seek his own happiness and find balance in his life (something his father did not have).
While Kaworu and Shinji are not seen as an explicit couple at the end of the movie, it’s significant to note that, when he sets Kaworu free, Shinji holds out his hand to Kaworu as a promise to stay together. Over the course of the movie, Shinji comes to accept his connection to others through accepting touch (in the form of hand holding and hugs from Rei, Misato, and Gendo); however, Kaworu is the only character in the movie who Shinji initiates physical contact with and that speaks to how much Kaworu means to him. This simple gesture, in my opinion, keeps the door open for Kaworu and Shinji to be a couple one day, after Kaworu has found more balance in his life.
If I were to write an entire essay about Kaworu, it would be titled, “Out of the Coffin: How the Resurrection of Kaworu Nagisa Buries the Tragic Lovers Trope” because this movie truly does just that.
Another potential love interest for Shinji for many years was Asuka; however, unlike with Kaworu, the nature of this relationship is not left up to interpretation by the end of the movie. Before her big final battle, Asuka tells Shinji, “I think I loved you back then” (regarding their time in middle school) and Shinji, during Instrumentality, tells Asuka, “Thank you for saying you loved me. I loved you too.” It is past tense.
What does this relationship teach us? It’s a beautiful way of showing that we can love people, and grow and learn, and let go when we no longer fit each other. Letting go is an integral part of life. Whereas other Instrumentality scenes involve touch, Asuka’s, mirroring the ending of End of Evangelion, has a distinct lack of touch. Shinji sits with his arms around his knees and Asuka turns her body away from him. He gives her his thanks and he sends her off to find her peace. Asuka and Shinji teach us that it’s okay to grow out of relationships. You can appreciate what they were to you at the time they happened and move on.
What about Rei? To be honest with you, this movie is less about Rei’s relationship with Shinji, and more about her relationship with the world. Rei teaches movie viewers about the simple pleasures of living. While Shinji is in mourning for the first quarter of the movie, Rei (as “Sokkuri”) is learning about crop growing and community, the wonder of babies and kittens, the joy of the bath after a long day of fruitful work, and the power of words and picture books. At the end of her life, she only regrets not having more time to spend with the people she loves. In Instrumentality, Shinji accepts her hand when it is offered to him, which I hope signifies he is ready to see life as she had come to during the final movie.
Rei teaches us that we can love living and to not take our limited time for granted.
Next, we move on to parent figures: Gendo and Misato. I think they both represent people ill suited to the role, who do the best they can despite it. Gendo, as mentioned for Kaworu above, is a warning about defining yourself by your relationship to another person (Ikari, afterall, is Yui’s name). He is also a lesson in how people mourn and how they can lash out. Misato, like Gendo, felt herself a poor parent, and while mourning the loss of Kaji, she gave up her child to be raised by other people, but, unlike Gendo, went forward to put all her energy into protecting humanity. Both of them reach out to hug Shinji within the movie and he accepts them where they are.
While I wouldn’t say the movie shows that Shinji forgives Gendo, it does show his making an effort to understand and make peace with what others have done. For Misato, it is fair to say we can still hope for a better future, even when it feels like everything is crumbling around us. Her self-sacrificing love for her son and the whole of humanity is what enables Shinji to then save the people he loves (via the spear of Gaius).
In the movie, we are also shown friendship. Touji, Hikari, and Kensuke are important members of their community who maintain open communication with those around them and respect others’ boundaries. They are patient and kind and represent the importance of being present. They teach us to meet people where they are and support them how we can, whether it’s giving them a warm meal or giving them space when they need it.
There are many more characters that could be talked about, but today I am going to end on Mari. Mari’s love is physical. She enjoys being in people’s personal bubbles. She cuddles Asuka and helps trim her hair, she gets into Gendo’s space at college, and at the end of the movie, she reaches out her hand to Shinji to help him stand up from his seat. Upon first glance, some viewers might take Mari and Shinji’s final scene to be romantic, but the reality of it is this: We do not, and cannot, know what kind of love she is meant to represent in his life.
We do not know Mari’s relationship with Shinji because they hardly interact in the movie. She clearly cares about him, but in my opinion, it comes from a place of duty and compassion— Mari was friends with Gendo and Yui. She has been there since he was born. (If we take the manga to be canon, then Mari even had romantic feelings towards his mother. Her hairstyle and glasses are from Yui. At the end of the movie, Mari has changed her hairstyle, which to me implies she has moved on, and “getting” with Shinji would be a thematic break.)
Additionally, their conversation, while flirty, is very much one that implies they haven’t seen each other for a while. Mari is someone who is very physically affectionate. With everyone. If someone ignores that and focuses on the fact she gets into Shinji’s space and claims that’s romantic, they better acknowledge it’s possibly romantic with Asuka, who we see far more intimacy with. When Mari flirts, Shinji flirts back and her initial reaction is surprise, “Wow, you’ve learned to talk back!” Her purpose is clear. She is there to remove the DSS choker from his neck.
Personally, I love that Mari is the one to close the movie, for the exact reason that we do not know her relationship with Shinji. For Mari to have an assigned role would be to say, “This kind of love is most important,” when the entire movie was spent showing us each love is of equal importance in the balance and building of our lives. (It’s wonderful to see those types of love embodied across the platform from Shinji at the end of the movie: Rei and Kaworu, who, just like in End of Evangelion, could signify the ability to connect with others and be loved.)
If you view Mari as a romantic love interest, then I think it speaks to the value that you as an individual give to romance rather than what the characters themselves are feeling. To me, Mari, the character who was created to “destroy Eva,” is a symbol of all love. When Shinji takes her offered hand and then pulls her to run into the new world, it’s a symbol of balance. The give and take of any kind of relationship.
We are the product of every relationship we have ever had, from our parents to the people we once loved, from our friendships to any other person we want to stay connected to. Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is a story about these relationships. It is a story about love.

The Wolf Reviewed
Spoiler-free section
My life is divided into two eras: ‘before seeing GG as Ji Chong’ and ‘after seeing GG as Ji Chong’. I will never be the same.
GG is magical in this series, and Ji Chong is among my absolute favorite characters of all time (I am actually in love with this character, which is heartbreaking given the fact that he’s fictional). The show also has many interesting characters and some exciting storylines, and in spite of some of its flaws this series is quite good. Highly recommended.
Tumblr media
Of course there’s a lot more to it than that, but I can’t give a full review without spoilers. Here’s the rest for those who have already seen the series.
Spoilers under the cut
OK, where to start?
The Characters
There were so many great characters in this story and overall I found the performances of all of them well-acted and exciting to watch. I especially loved Ji Chong and Yao Ji. Both were complex, mysterious characters who stole the show every time they were onscreen.
Ji Chong was incredible. Everything about him was over-the-top amazing. I can imagine that GG must have identified a lot with Ji Chong because he has a similarly gallant, charismatic and kind personality. Seeing GG perform a character like this was mind-blowing because of the harmony between them in spite of their physical differences.
I could go on and on about how much I love Ji Chong as a character but if you’ve seen the series you already know how great he is. I truly fell in love with that man. He was everything I love in a person, and in such a beautiful package. I loved his nimble mischievousness, his rebelliousness, his fierce independence, his devotion to those he loves, and above all, his integrity.  With one exception that I’ll get into later, everything he did in that series was consistent with the image I had of him and it made my heart melt.
And it was pretty insane to see GG go from the thin, twinkish, bubbly and somewhat diminutive Wei Wuxian to the rugged, masculine, mature and level-headed Ji Chong. Not only because of the personality differences between the two characters, but also because of the physical differences. They look like two entirely different people. Ji Chong looks so tall and imposing in the series!
It’s impressive to see GG’s acting ability shine through in these roles. He has such a gift for acting, and for drawing viewers into the hearts of the characters he plays.
Yao Ji was another character that really impressed me. She had so much intensity and complexity, and her character arc was so strong. She was also just incredibly well styled and she looked breathtaking in every single frame she appeared in. The various headpieces and hairstyles she wore were stunning, and her sidekick Zi Shen was an aesthetic marvel.
Tumblr media
I also really loved Ma Jing. Despite the fact that she was often used for comedic effect, her character was quite nuanced and multidimensional. I loved her loyalty and strength, and the depth of the love she had for Ma Zhai Xing really shone through in every scene she was in.
The entire Night Fury group was also amazing. I loved them as a team and as individuals, and the trajectories their characters went through were interesting and engaging. I was really invested in what became of them. When Wen Yan died I was gutted, and I was grateful that Hai Die and Mo Xiao had such a satisfying conclusion to their story.
I also adored Butler Shi. What a great character. He reminded me of one or two guys I know hehe. He had such a warm, endearing quality about him.
I’m realizing that I could sit here and name almost every character in this series. Despite some of the problems that I have with it, I’m reminded that the characters are exceptionally well-realized in this series.
The Story
Overall I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by the story. It was exciting and engaging, and there were some very interesting side conflicts and intrigues. There was an overall sense of adventure and plenty of action, some really emotional moments and even comic relief.
When you think about it, almost every character had something deeper going on outside of the main plot, and those side/back stories were really interesting and varied. There was complexity to the characters and their motives and experiences without it overcomplicating the plot.
The romances were not my cup of tea. I’ll get into that later on. But despite being the thread that ran through the entire story, they really didn’t feel central to it and it was easy to simply enjoy the show while putting aside the annoyances I had with the romances (I did this primarily by consciously choosing to take the story at face value, and choosing to believe that Ma Zhai Xing really was through with Prince Bo).
The show did a great job of getting me engaged and keeping me interested, giving me a story that was complex without being confusing, emotional without being too sappy (with some exceptions). The action, fight scenes, battles, etc. were exciting without feeling fake and cliche. There were some well-choreographed scenes.
I really can’t complain about much. I mean, there were times when I was watching this series that I thought I hated it, but in retrospect I can see that I really loved it in spite of some of the flaws, which I’ll discuss in a moment.
The Soundtrack
The soundtrack was quite good, even if it felt repetitive when I was bingeing the show. So many songs have stuck with me since I finished the series. I especially like Backflow by Jolin Tsai (second-last song on the playlist I linked). Of course I would have loved a song or two with GG, but the soundtrack we got was memorable.
What I hated
I really struggled with some aspects of this series.
I found Bao Na mostly unwatchable. She was incredibly annoying. As a character she had all the traits I dislike. Whiny, stalker, demanding, emotionally immature, jealous... I really couldn’t stand that character for a lot of the series.
It’s true that she started to redeem herself a bit through the course of the series but she never really evolved into someone I wanted to see more of. I definitely had some moments where I liked her and sympathized with her, but mostly she grated on my nerves.
Tumblr media
I also hated Prince Bo through most of the series, and found it insulting that I was expected to view him as the protagonist and cheer for him to win the princess’s heart. I felt that the ‘love-hate’ thing between Prince Bo and Ma Zhai Xing was overplayed to a point where I lost all sympathy with Prince Bo and desperately wanted him to die a horrible death through much of the series.
His behavior didn’t reflect someone who was in love but wanted to protect her. Much of his behavior was excessive and gratuitous, much worse than was necessary to achieve its stated goal. He was incredibly emotionally and psychologically abusive toward Ma Zhai Xing to a degree that was often really hard to watch. Especially his near-rape of her.
This is a man that I didn’t want to see redeemed. This is a man I wanted to see burned alive. No one who truly loved Ma Zhai Xing would be even remotely capable of the actions Prince Bo took.
I will admit that he did begin to redeem himself in my eyes a bit later in the series, but not to where I could ever see him with Ma Zhai Xing. I don’t think that’s the sort of treatment one can ever redeem in a relationship. He might be able to redeem himself, but not the relationship. There are some lines, once crossed between people, that one can never come back from.
I actually felt that Yao Ji was a much better match for Prince Bo than the princess was. They were true equals with similarly difficult pasts, and similarly dark deeds to redeem themselves from. They were in so many ways perfect for each other.
Tumblr media
Ji Chong and Ma Zhai Xing were a better match because they were more natural equals in terms of personality, values and life paths. There were tremendous parallels between the two of them. Although I ended up feeling she didn’t deserve him.
So for me, it was really difficult to get invested in the love stories I was presented with. Ultimately I found them all very unsatisfying. The people I wanted to see together were treated as unsuitable for each other in ways that were completely unbelievable, and the people I was expected to want to see together had unconvincing chemistry and incompatibilities that I couldn’t overlook.
Seeing Ma Zhai Xing die in the end was an OUTRAGE. Especially when I read about the director’s rationale for that decision.
“Her thought process on killing off “Zhai Xing” was that “King Bo” had done so much for her that it was time for her to do something for him. “Her character had matured the most in the series. Dying for Wolf Boy is the best ending for this identity of hers. To me, this perfect ending is even more in line with her character’s growth.””
I found that shocking. I couldn’t disagree more with this sentiment. She wasted so much of herself and her life for Prince Bo. He treated her like crap, and he didn’t ever truly do anything to redeem himself from that behavior. He should have been the one to die.
In my opinion, REAL character growth for Ma Zhai Xing would have been to see her overcome the fixation with Wolf Boy and with Prince Bo and just move on with her life.
I will say this, though: By the time Ma Zhai Xing died in the show, her character had already been so utterly and thoroughly decimated beyond all recognition via the Prince Bo housewife trajectory that there was no point in her surviving.
The absolute worst moment for me, though, was Ji Chong ending up with Bao Na. Talk about adding insult to injury. This is the one thing that Ji Chong did as a character that ran against my understanding of him as a character.
You could have done anything at all to Ji Chong, including killing him or turning him into a villain, and it would have been less of an insult to me than putting him with Bao Na.
I do try to interpret his invitation for them to travel together in a non-romantic way (despite the fact that in the world of the show there’s no way that a princess is going to go traveling with a prince without her reputation being ruined unless they are a couple). But when I tell myself that he took her traveling to get her away from court and give her some life experience - as friends only - then it becomes less of a bitter pill to swallow. I could see him doing that for her, and I could see them developing a strong friendship through their travels.
I just can’t see them as remotely romantically compatible. Not on any level.
I found it completely unconvincing that the most emotionally mature, honorable person in the entire series who had the healthiest boundaries and a lot of worldly experience and intelligence, would have any interest whatsoever in someone as emotionally immature, childish and inexperienced (and with no boundaries whatsoever) as Bao Na.
I would have preferred it if they’d framed that whole thing as him being a sort of big brother/mentor figure to her.
I felt like I saw chemistry and compatibility between Bao Na and Fourth Prince Chu You Ze, and I would have loved to see them end up together. They were much more at an equal footing. I was expecting that to be the outcome and it would have been a sweet one. They would have made a cute couple.
Final thoughts
The romances in this story seemed fixated on unhealthy, often misogynistic power imbalances and they were really, really hard to watch. Not just in terms of Prince Bo and Ma Zhai Xing but also the ugly Ji Chong and Princess Bao Na hookup they tried to get me to swallow at the end. I hate that kind of ‘love’ story. I prefer seeing actual equals find each other in the great wide world.
However, pretty much everything else about the series was excellent. Ji Chong owns my heart and I only wish I could see more of him. GG completely blew me away and far exceeded all of my expectations.
Overall, I really love this series and will definitely be rewatching it.

Connections Review Part 1
Happy 2021 everyone! Well…the year’s off to a terrible start due to how bad last year was but I hope that most of 2021 will be good and not be 2020 Part 2: Electric Boogaloo. But enough of that, another arc ended, another review due. Now I am quite conscious of length here and I’ll try to make these reviews a bit easier to read, it will still be split into 3 parts as there I can cover the main themes which are; Time Travel, Harems and Maverick ‘Motherfucker Hellspawn’ Storm. My initial plan was to have a quick lightening recap of everything that doesn’t fit into these categories and then review the Time Travelling and Harems but Storm became so big he needed his own part. Oh, and it should go without saying, but I will not cover the Mistletoe Asks. They are not relevant to the arc and are basically shipping fluff. No in-depth analysis required there. And with that said and done, let’s get right into it.
Its Recap time
So, as I mentioned before we get into the 3 big themes of this arc, I’ll cover really quick, and I promise it will be really quick here, anything that doesn’t fit into those categories. So firstly, we see that Kazuichi went around the Void Warehouse and helped fix their lights. Now that all of Class 77-B are aware of Void’s existence, they can help out with any problems they might have in their living quarters, which leads to a funny scene of Kazuichi getting attacked by a crow. This could be random but given what has happened with another seemly random event (more on that later) and the fact that Monocrow exists, this could be sinister foreshadowing for things yet to come. We also see Kazuichi getting ideas to build a robot with Chihiro as that’s his way of romance. Given Chihiro’s crossdressing tendencies, I wonder when the truth comes out and how confused our shark boy would be. But yeah, Kazuichi out all of the new Class 77-B members seems to have the most focus in this arc, not that I’m complaining as he was the most ‘pointless’ survivor from DR2 so him getting actual character development and focus I’m more then welcome for! There’s also Yoruko rekindling her relationship with her mentor Minako. This went better than expected then again it happened years ago, both Yoruko and Minako had time to reflect on it and both wanted to make up, but thought the other wouldn’t accept it. We also see some parallels here with Hiroko from UDG as Kizuna is revealed to be the result of a teenage pregnancy. As I mentioned in an ask, not to bog you down with personal details but teenage pregnancy is a serious problem where I live and too many people I know fucked as teens, didn’t use protection, and boom! Babies! Good thing I have a passion for Danganronpa so I DON’T get wrapped up in that kind of stuff eh? So, I completely understand Minako’s rational here, and Kizuna’s more troublesome behaviour as one of my RL friends was also the result of a teen pregnancy, and this led to her having…issues. And yeah, Kizuna shamelessly flirts with the Anons and talks about Josuke, no not THAT Josuke, simping hard for her. Naturally we have bigger problems to content with but once the weather calms down, we need to sort out Kizuna, especially now that Yoruko and Minako have made up. And that’s the two things that happened which weren’t relevant to the main themes. Now they are out of the way, time to move onto Wibbly Wobbly Timey Wimey Stuff. Hey, Emma made a Doctor Who joke already, so it’s okay!
Back to the Visions
Despite Time Travel being one of the main themes of this blog, not a lot of research has gone into it at the moment, so in this wind down time, it’s the perfect time for Umeko to do some experiments into time travel. Last Arc dropped the reveal that Mikako has being getting dreams of the future, and as Koroko and Umeko pull up at the Kisurugi household, we see that Mikako just had a dream of the Tragedy, which understandably horrified her. Because of this Umeko and Koroko were forced to tell Mikako, Yamato and his father the truth about the future. They omitted Kasugano and him changing the timelines as its not needed but well…when one dreams of an apocalyptic future you know is coming, there’s no sense in lying about it. Umeko then explains about the time travel and basically that since the brain surgery, Mikako’s brain has become a tachyon receiver that can pick up tachyon from different timelines, not just the one you are on. But it goes beyond being able to see the future via her dreams as if Mikako focuses, and someone touches Mikako during this time, they are hit with a vision of the future that involves them. The first vision was with Koroko and she caught a glimpse into a future much more distant then the 2017 that Hajime, Yoruko, Sora and the other 2 time travellers came from, as it seems to be from the Year 2020-2022 so pretty close to our time then. Here Koroko and Kanata, who not only went through a growth spurt like Hiyoko (Poor Hibiki, she is forever going to be the short one) and has married Nagito, are giving vaccinations to a young girl named Sayuri Hinata. Sayuri herself is very familiar to some people as during the last Arc when Akane was trying to comfort Nikei, one Anon asked about a timeline where she and Ayame had a child. This was a reference to Nextgenronpa which is a Nextgen AU on Instagram created by Mikwithnoando, if you happen to have an Instagram account, I highly recommend reading it, it’s really good! The character in question is called Sayuri Otonokoji the Ultimate Sculptor and in Nextgenronpa she’s the child of Hibiki and Iroha. Koroko looking through her medical records noticed her mother’s name is Hibiki Hinata so Hibiki obviously changed her last name, makes sense as she wants to probably be as far away from Otonokoji as possible now but no mention of the father and yes Sayuri looks a lot like Iroha. This has a few possibilities.
The first theory is that Sayuri is Hibiki and Hajime’s child, but both are very busy. Hibiki would have very likely restarted her musical career around this time and we don’t know what Hajime would be doing but he would be very busy as well, and thus not a lot of time to raise Sayuri. Now Iroha would have a very sedimentary lifestyle and given she is looking after Jataro at the moment, this would probably make Iroha one of the more experienced caretakers/mothers of the cast, so maybe Sayuri was often babysat by Iroha, and if Sayuri was spending a lot of time with Iroha at a young age, she would start to view Iroha as a second mother and start copying her behaviour and mannerisms. But that doesn’t evade the fact that Sayuri PHYSICALLY looks like Iroha as well. The second theory is something happens to Hibiki or Hajime and they are unable to reproduce but want kids. With Kyoji, making kids would not be an issue, but a surrogate mother would be required and maybe Iroha volunteered to be a surrogate. However, the big issue there is that Iroha is much younger than the Goodbye Despair cast, and as Mikan later points out legally, you need to be 21 to be eligible. Sayuri looking to be 8-10 years old means Hibiki and Hajime must have banged around now-2014 and Iroha won’t turn 21 until 2017 and Sayuri looks way older than 3-5 years old. But there is one more theory and the one I believe in. Just because Mikako can see the future, doesn’t mean it’s the timeline we are currently on, and you guys remember that awful, awful period during Oncoming Storm when Iroha was crushing on Hajime and wanted to join the Cuddle Puddle despite there being a significant age gap between him and Iroha? In our timeline, Yoruko was able to slap some sense into Hajime, he was able to see he was developing a Saviour’s complex and was able to grow and develop, and it also system shocked Iroha as well as she learnt that she needed to grow up as well. But what if that didn’t happen? I think that timeline is from one when the sense slapping didn’t happen and Iroha did wind up being part of the Cuddle Puddle, and Sayuri was the result of science from Kyoji and Iroha and Hibiki wanting kids. In addition to this we also see Kotoko in her teen years and she looks brilliant all grown up and the way she talked about ‘our mothers’ and Sayuri referring to Kotoko as a big sister, makes one believe that Mikan is successful in adopting Kotoko. Overall, while Sayuri is going to be a headache to decode, that future was nice and sweet, even if it gave Mikako mild seizures.
After Mikako recovered, Yamato wanted to see the future as well, and thus we get the second vision which is from the OG Timeline in 2014, as it shows some Class 79 tomfoolery with Haruhiko ‘testing’ Yamato’s jetpack and crashing into a tree, and Teruya being concerned for his bro. I know its 2014 because Class 79 was formed then and they didn’t bond for long before Utsuro showed up with an army of Monokumas and was like ‘Knock knock, it’s the upupupu train’ and we get the Proto Killing Game. At least Yamato gets to see his future friends for the first time. And Mikako doesn’t get that much of a headache this time so it seems that the further in time she looks, the bigger the side effects. The first vision was a decade into the future so the side effects were quite big but the second one was only a couple of years so the effects were reduced.  It remains uncertain if Mikako has to trust the person in question for the vision link to be done because as much of a force of good this seer ability is, it can also be used for evil. Overall, lots of discoveries on Mikako’s abilities and some hope that not every future out there is filled with despair and there exists a timeline where the Quantum Crew do win. Now it’s a case of seeing if that’s the timeline they are on or not.
That summarizes part 1 with the recapping of minor details and the time travelling science! It’s a longer part then I wanted but with the recap at the beginning it cannot be helped. When we come back, I’ll talk about the Harems and the events surrounding them and hopefully that would be the new length I wish to aim for because this is more of my old length. Stay tuned people! - Review Anon

Hiring a Local Basement Contractor: Remodeling, Finishing & Waterproofing
Tumblr media
Basement professionals lead the range of contractors. You can find a company that offers broad finishing services. Or you can find some experts who complete the job piecemeal, starting with a waterproofing company and then flooring, electrical, and plumbing pros.
You need to know how to find the right contractor, what to ask, and how to work with him. This guide can help you whether you want to finish your basement or just add waterproofing.
When You Hire A Contractor To Finish A Basement
Basement extension is often the most cost-effective option to add square feet to the floor plan of your home, but it can only work well if you take the time to find and interview specialists.
Completing your basement is a great investment in time and money, and the rewards can be even more significant. Hiring the right expert will add a significant amount of living space while increasing the value of your home by about 70% of the project cost.
Professionals hired usually take care of
• Flooring
• Insulation
• Building Walls, and
• Finishing the Ceiling.
You may need to hire subcontractors to provide waterproofing, plumbing, or electricity services. Ask your contractor if they specialize in these services in advance.
Hiring Tips in The Research Phase
Some contractors offer you the choice of flooring in the basement and help you assess the advantages and disadvantages. Others simply expect you to make all the design and material decisions. Know what to expect before hiring an expert.
When you start looking for a professional to help you complete the room, look for a few special things to help you find the right expert:
• Set Your Budget: Finishing your basement expenses between $10K and $50K and more, so it’s crucial to know what you can afford.
• Go Beyond The Price: Take the extra time to view photos of each company’s previous work to avoid choosing an inferior professional.
• Look For Online Reviews and Ratings: Especially on independent sites such as HighFive Listings.
• Check License and Insurance Information.
• Pay Attention To Communication: This is a large and often lengthy project. Make sure that the company you choose respects your wishes.
Questions To A Contractor Who Is Completing A Basement
When the first investigation is complete, contact all the companies that meet your criteria and ask several specific questions:
• What experiences have you had with the basement finishes?
• Are you registered, licensed, and insured with the state?
• Will a permit be required for this project, and can you help me obtain it?
• How much time do you think the project will take?
• Will, you offer cost options for various materials?
• Which part of the project will you complete and which will have to be awarded to subcontractors?
• Will you manage and supervise local subcontractors?
• Do you have references to previous works that I can contact?
Following this last question, you will find references for each company that still meets your criteria. Knowing which questions to ask each customer can help you to recognize the quality of the work.
• Were you satisfied with the project?
• Was the work done on time?
• Were there unexpected expenses?
• Would you use this contractor?
• Would you recommend this professional?
Find The Best  Basement Remodeling Companies
Your basement might already be finished, but it needs complete renovation work. In this case, it is worth working with an expert who specializes in remodeling.
This professional will work as a general contractor, and perform specialized tasks such as waterproofing, electrical, and sanitary work. Unless you plan to change the room layout, these tasks will not be as important as in the case of basement finishing.
What Renovation Professionals Should Look Out For:
The most important decision you make when you embark on a basement remodeling project is to select your contractors. When deciding between many companies, price should not be your only concern. Rather, take these steps to drive a balance between quality and budget:
• Set A Price Range: With an average basement remodeling expense of about $20K, knowing what you can afford should be the first step.
• Start With A Wide-Ranging Search: Write down a list of contractors in your area who can potentially do the job.
• Pay Attention To Customer Reviews: Online reviews and ratings are a great approach to narrow down your search.
• Check Your License and Insurance: Consider only experts who have the necessary papers.
• Use Your Judgment: Given the length of the project, you must be able to get along with the workers on your property.
What to Ask Basement Renovation or Remodeling Services
The first steps above should have left you a few companies that meet all the criteria. Contact them and ask some specific questions to evaluate their qualifications:
• How long have you been renovating basements?
• What formal training did you have for this work?
• Do you belong to any professional associations?
• Do you have a state-issued license and registration?
• Are you insured?
• Do you give written guarantees?
• Can you evaluate how long it will take?
• Will you offer options for different materials?
• Do you have any references I can contact?
Once you have references from previous clients, ask them several questions to get a feel for their experience with the professional.
The Choice of A Basement Waterproofing or Repair Pro
Not all renovation projects are aesthetic, some are just necessary to keep your home dry. A basement waterproofing company can ensure this with a variety of solutions, ranging from installing indoor sump pumps to French outdoor drainage.
A couple of companies offer all services, but well trained in one or the other. Some of these work is done directly within your foundation, so it is essential to find an expert with the appropriate expertise.
First Steps in Selecting A Contractor
Reputation is the key to this kind of professionalism. Any work that involves your foundation needs someone who knows exactly what it is doing. The cost of sealing your basement can cost you $10K or more. Make sure the money is spent wisely.
• Know Your Problem: It could be just a $500 solution, or you might need a new foundation. If in doubt, ask for free foundation repair estimates.
• Do Your research: How many professionals in your area can do the work you need to keep your room safe and dry?
• Check Reviews and Ratings: High ratings are great. In-depth reviews that detail the work for a client are even better.
• Check Licensing: Do not work with someone who is not licensed and registered with the state.
• Understand Warranties: Consider only companies that back up their talk of quality with a guarantee that they can solve problems.
Ask Professionals Who are Waterproof, Sealed, or Repair
The interview process is critical. If you bring companies out to make you an offer, sit down for a few very specific questions to help you determine their quality.
• What’s your estimated timeframe for the job?
• How many years are you in the business?
• Have you had faults with the systems you installed? What went worse, and how will you settle it this time?
• Would you suggest exterior or interior waterproofing, and why?
• Which sump pumps would you recommend if any? Where would you fit them?
• Why do you think your proposed project would be the right solution for me?
• Do you offer assurance and what does it cover?
• Can you provide any references for past work like mine?
Answers to these questions tell you almost everything you need to know. Look for honest answers that acknowledge past mistakes, but also a way forward to ensure that this doesn’t happen again. Experience shines via in some of the more specific questions, even if you’re not a waterproofing expert yourself.
DIY (Do It Yourself) vs. Hiring A Basement Professional To Remodel or Refinish
The first question most homeowners need to answer is whether they need to hire an outside professional. In most cases, the answer is yes. If you are an expert on one of the following topics, you may be able to save some money by doing it yourself.
Can I Finish My Basement?
You can finish your basement, but only if you have extensive knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and general contractor. Start by contacting your local municipality to gets any essential permitting.
Be prepared to detect potential problems as soon as you start working on walls and floors. Also, the project takes time. If you only work on weekends, it is common for this sort of project to take two years or more.
Can I Frame My Basement?
Do you understand how to install a floating wall? The answer to this question is central to understanding whether you can frame your basement.
Simply installing a few 2x4s is not enough. The floor under your foundation, and therefore your cement floor, will expand and contract over time. Floating walls ensure that this movement does not seriously compromise the integrity of the structure of your home. Therefore, working with a specialist is important.
Finishing Basement Walls Yourself
The finishing layer over your wall frame needs to take floating walls into account. Whether you want to install drywall or wood paneling, you need to make sure you leave enough room for an expanding and contracting floor.
It requires precise knowledge of how much space to leave on the floor and how to anchor the wall. Most homeowners are unfamiliar with this process, so it is best left to licensed contractors.
How to Install Basement Floors
Installing your basement floor is similar to other levels of the house, with a few additional complications.
• Moisture: You must keep your floor dry in a room with potentially high humidity.
• Obstacles: You must protect the integrity of your French drain indoors or other types of existing waterproofing.
If you are unsure about both, hire a professional.
Finishing Basements With Low Ceilings
On the level below your living space. They complete the space, but they must also have easy access to all the sanitary facilities and electricity that flows into the house. That’s what makes drop ceilings so popular.
You need to know exactly how much space you need to leave, how to support all your ceiling beams, and how to avoid power lines. Work with a contractor who can help you.
FAQs
What Can I Predict From My Company For Basement Finishing?
What you can expect from your finishing company depends on the exact professionals you hire. Some will sit down to plan the detailed floor plan and choice of materials with you; others will expect you to make those decisions.
Regardless of this, your contractor expects you to clean the room and rid it of debris and clutter. Make their work as easy as possible by providing them with easy access to and from the basement. If the contractors are going to be exceptionally dusty, as after sanding drywall, get some carpet parts from a store and place them in a path to the door.
Are Basement Finishing and Remodeling Professionals the Same?
Many, but everyone, basement remodeling experts are the same or offer comparable services. Finishing specialists tend to do remodeling work as well, but remodeling specialists cannot always finish a room. That’s because the procedure tends to be more difficult and involves more subtasks. Be sure what you’re looking for when hiring one or the other to avoid confusion.
Is it Worth it To Finish a Basement?
The completion of your basement is worthwhile, both for the resale value and for the additional living space. It is the easiest way to add livable spaces to your house without building an addition.
How Should I Business With Basement Contractors on My Property?
Proper etiquette can make everyone’s job easier on a major home improvement project, and these contractors spend most of their time out of the way. It’s very convenient for everyone involved, but it’s very important to keep the lines of communication open throughout your project.
Brewing a large pot of coffee and giving a cup to your crew is one of the best things a homeowner can do when making a major renovation. It doesn’t cost you much, but it lets your crew know that you appreciate the work they do. Homeowners who bring a little warmth to their contractors often get ten times as much productivity or even small extras back for free.
How Can I Get a Cheap Basement Remodel?
When it comes to basement projects, cheaper is not always better. Low quality work can threaten the integrity of your home and pose future dangers to everyone living in it. A few cost-effective points can help you optimize your budget:
• Get multiple quotes to make sure you get reasonable prices from all companies.
• If you are qualified, you should do some of the work yourself.
• Organise experts such as electricians or plumbers, rather than leaving it to the general contractor for a fee.
• Choose your materials wisely, such as vinyl over ceramic tiles.
Where Can I Find Remodeling and Basement Contractors Near Me?
In any part of the nation where most houses have basements, finishing professionals are easy to find. You also need to make sure you work with qualified experts. HighFive Listings allows previous customers to post reviews, comments, and reviews of the company they have chosen.

How To Have Easy Conversations With Conservative People
There is rancor in America and elsewhere. No time more than today is communication proficiency, self control, presence of mind and command of intention needed.
Also needed: compassion, honesty, openness and vulnerability.
As a progressive, if you’re expecting conservatives bring these, satisfaction is not in your future. Conservatives are scared and for good reason.
When a human being is scared, they do and say irrational things. Scared people try controlling environmental factors by any means necessary. If they’re scared enough, they’ll get violent.
These acts are typical for any human. Not only conservatives. Progressives verge on similar insecurity-fueled irrationality. The Anti-facists are a great example.
But progressives have no basis for their fear. They are winning.
Conservatives have a LOT of basis for theirfear. A biological basis, as we pointed out here. And, the future — our collective future — offers an overabundance of evidence. It threatens everything they hold dear.
We therefore offer this guide to progressives.
Progressives are best positioned to make history. Not by changing conservative minds. But by changing how they approachconservatives.
This guide presents a path forward. Life-changing, gratifying conversations with conservatives are possible. Conversations that can change opinions are too. These are sorely needed, but they’re not happening today’s social discourse. Not enough anyway.
This opinion-changing must happen on an individual-by-individual basis. Influence on such an insignificant level can change nations.
That’s because it’s amazing what happens when a person feels heard. Equally amazing are the many positive responses Perry gets from conservatives. Like this one:
“Thank you for your kind thoughts. It is refreshing to connect with someone with whom I can discuss some of the challenges confronting our society without the rancor too often associated with such discussions. We do have our differences…”
Progressives don’t need to change the world. They need to change their approach.
So what follows describes practical, sure-fire approaches. They will work.
However, you must practice them. Becoming genuinely proficient with them will transform your experience. Not only with your conservative fellow Americans, but anyone you disagree with.
But….and it’s a big one: if you’re not genuine in your desire for real human bonds with a fellow human being; a human being you right now may consider your existential enemy, you will not get far. Your desire to connect with this other human must be sincere. These are not debating tactics.
Your Ground Rules
Before offering the approaches, let’s set your ground rules. Your rules of engagement. Not engagement with the prospective conservative. We’ll talk about that later.
These rules of engagement are for how you will engage your humanity and your brain in service of your cause. Which is to connect meaningfully with a human you may currently consider your enemy and, through that connection, have an inspiring positive experience via conversation.
So here are your ground rules:
You will not allow words to trigger your well-honed sensitivity to offense. Words are just that. Words. You are not under threat. Even if a threat is offered, they are words. A real threat is immanent behavior likely resulting in serious personal injury. Not someone’s lips moving. Maintain your calm no matter what is said. Better yet, replace your sensitivity to offense with a healthy sense humor.
Your goal is connection. Not winning. You are not trying to persuade a conservative to become progressive. Conservatives serve a beneficial purpose within humanity. Your goal is connection, so you can fulfill your primary and secondary intents and commitments, outlined below.
Your primary intent/commitment is: understanding. You must be clear and rigid in your desire to hear, understand and inquire further into what the conservative believes.
Your secondary (but no less important) intent: finding commonalities between you and your conservative conversation partner.
Follow these ground rules while applying approaches described here. You’ll be stunned as you discover how human conservatives are. Your mind will expand and you’ll understand where conservatives come from.
You may even become genuinely compassionate towards conservatives. Rather than claiming to be compassionate while hating conservatives. Hate, annoyance, extreme frustration are not compassion. That’s hypocrisy. If you’re progressive.
Distinguishing The Context
Now let’s talk about context. To do so we’ll distinguishing two labels which describe communication between people. People often confuse one for the other. Doing so, they get in trouble.
You want a conversationwith the conservative. The word “conversation” may mean to you the same thing as “discussion”, the other word we’re going to clarify. But these words are NOT the same. They describe two totally different intents, processes, outcomes, contexts and feelings.
One aligns with your intent (presuming you’re wanting connection). The other does not.
You want conversation
“Conversation” is a talk, usually an informal one, between two or more people exchanging ideas. You know this. But you may not know the word’s origin. Words’ origins carry their meaning so much better sometimes than their definition. So let’s look at the origin of “conversation”. Here it is:
Tumblr media
Interesting, eh? A conversation then, is something that ends with you having a feeling of “living among, or having intimate familiarity,” with the person with whom you have conversed. This is what you want. You want a conversation. Not a discussion.
Not discussion
Let’s contrast conversation now with “discussion”. A discussion is “the action or process of talking about something in order to reach a decision or to exchange ideas.”
That sounds laudable. It’s not though.
Not in the context of making a connection with, and understanding another human being.
Discussions don’t breed familiarity. In discussions, you’re just throwing back and forth opinions. Discussions get you nowhere if you’re trying to connect.
But wait, there’s more.
People don’t generally understand what “discussion” connotes. Probably because, like “converstation”, they don’t understand the word’s origin. Here is the origin of the word “discussion”, the noun and verb so you get a clear picture.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the intent of “discussions” is not to gain familiarity and a sense of living among the person you are speaking with. No. Its intent is “to examine by argument, to tear apart, disperse, shake or dash to pieces.”
Does that sound like the basis of connection?
We don’t think so either.
Progressives and conservatives are not trying to connect. They are tearing each other apart. And the country along with them.
They are discussing. Not conversing.
If you want a groundbreaking interaction with a conservative, you’re going to have to move out of discussion-mode and into conversation-mode.
Ok?
The Right Way To Approach Conservatives
So here are the approaches. They only work if you stridently refuse to be baited. Strive instead for connection and understanding (your ground rules).
If you can’t stick to the ground rules, it’s best you first practice with someone who can role play a conservative until you get the hang of it.
The approach:
Ask more questions than sharing your opinion.
Express over and over your sincere desire to understand their point of view, not to exert yours, until they relent, i.e. realize you really do want to understand them.
Beseech your conservative to stick to answering your questions. If they avoid or refuse to answer your questions, keep (politely) redirecting the conversation back to your questions, or express vulnerability (we’ll offer an example in a moment) that may trigger them reciprocating.
When the conservative answers your question, offer sincere praise and appreciation. It is not standard practice for someone who is fearful and feeling defensive to answer a question, particularly one that demands they be vulnerable. Especially a question asked by someone the responder believes is the enemy of their values. So reward them for taking a risk.
When the person answers your question, and you have praised them, ask more questions. Offer limited information you may want to share. Instead, listen to the person’s answers.
When they answer, take in what they say. Chew on it, prepare a relevant response. Then offer the response in the form of a question or a polite rebuttal supported with examples.
If they ask a question, answer it. If you don’t have an answer, say so. Risk looking stupid. And if they call you stupid or a loser or whatever, remember ground rule number one.
Repeat these steps.
We’re not offering this in a vacuum. It has worked for Perry several times now to remarkable results. Not every time, but often enough to recommend them. We’re offering one complete example that happened on facebook. We’re offering this example because of the documented evidence. Anyone can look at it to see what happened.
Despite Perry misstepping in several moments, the conversation went quite well. Here’s an overview of it:
Perry offered the following meme on his wall.
Tumblr media
It’s inaccurate (which the conservative responders pointed out). But the purpose of sharing it was for conversation. Conversation did happen. It ended with the following statement. This from a conservative who at first expressed himself aggressively:
I enjoyed reading your post. We do have more in common it seems….I wish you much success in your endeavors!
This is where you want to end up. It won’t happen every time, but if you practice, you’ll get better at it. Perry screwed up in this facebook exchange a couple times. But he still ended with positive results in line with the above ground rules, objectives/intents.
So we know if you sincerely use these approaches, you’ll find yourself in a new reality. One where conservatives turn out to be human.
Just like you.
Don’t get triggered
Tumblr media
^^A conservative defending her life-decisions, then name calling Perry in a tweet.
People who believe conservatively have been trained to be tough. They live in a brutish world where it’s dog eat dog, and survival of the fittest.
Their manner of interaction feels like discussion. Confrontational, gruff, belligerent. Not conversational. At first.
So be prepared for rebuffs, snide accusations, and direct insults. It will sound like you’re talking to Alex Jones, Donald Trump or Rush Limbaugh instead of the person you’re talking with.
After all, for many conservatives, these people are their heroes. So of course they will pattern their discussion style on those peoples’ styles.
Intelligent conservatives, taking a cue from many conservative organizational playbooks, such as the college campus-focused Turning Point USA, will try to bait you into losing your control.
Don’t take the bait.
Compassion wins. Always.
Self control is your best friend. Again, if you suck at self control, your best fallback is your leftie compassion.
But if “compassion” is just a word for you, or worse, something you believe you “can’t afford in these times”, which is actually something a progressive told Perry recently, then you’ve already lost.
There is always room for compassion. The best, most effective progressives — Jesus, Ghandi, MLK, Harvey Milk — have demonstrated this time and time again.
You must contain your disgust. You must respond with vulnerability. Even in the face of their disgust of you (and what they presume you believe).
For example, when Perry clarified errors a conservative made in interpreting Perry’s previous comment, the person offered the following:
I’d like to continue proving my points but you don’t seem too receptive to the logic I’m providing. Your idea of what a necessity is leaves me wondering how much of a privileged life you must have and probably still do live. Many people survive without an education and many walk to jobs or bike. Many live healthy lives without doctors and hospitals. It’s a shame that you don’t seem to have facts to support your assertions, or did I miss them somewhere in your previous posts? Again I appreciate your ‘opinion’ and respectfully disagree with most if not all of them. Assertions without facts to support them lead me to believe that all of your points are opinion based.
In response, Perry could have been triggered as a person of color, being accused of enjoying privilege. Instead, Perry offered vulnerability. How? By acknowledging his privilege:
So now let’s talk about my privilege, which is a funny thing to bring up IMO. But as I said, I’m more than happy to chat about whatever you bring up.
I am privileged. I live in a great country. It has ALWAYS been great. It also can be improved. I live in the west. I live in a democratic society. I get to live pretty much wherever my finances make it possible to live. I have a wife who loves me, pets who adore me. I enjoy the sunshine, the beautiful state of Oregon and all it has to offer. I enjoy clean air, a healthy body and mind. I enjoy clean delicious food my wife makes for me or I make. I enjoy an adventurous life, where I get to spend my time doing pretty much whatever floats my boat. My life is getting better and better as is my prosperity. I realize my eternal nature and from that I know anything is possible.
I’m also male. I’m a “black” male. I came into the world with the perfect timing such that I can enjoy both these in relative security and comfort (compared to other times). I’m also non-binary. I’m free of constraints of being “straight” (thank god!). I have the fluidity of thought to see the world from multiple perspectives, and not just human ones. I have the privilege to have time to think about life — ordinary day-to-day life, but also extraordinary aspects of life, such as what happens after death and how all that happens after death (and before birth) shapes what happens between birth and death. I have found those answers. From those answers, I know things a LOT of people don’t know. So yeah, I’m privileged. But no more than anyone can be. I can pretty much do right now, whatever floats my boats.
It just so happens, what floats my boats is creating a world where EVERYONE has the opportunity to do whatever THEY want to float THEIR boats….
You can’t be vulnerable if you’re triggered. You can’t offer cogent thoughtful replies either when you’re triggered. When you get triggered, you offer fodder confirming conservative beliefs about you and other progressives (liberals). Don’t be this guy:
youtube
Offer food for thought
Once you have earned their attention by thoughtfully, calmly and constructively listening to, and then expressing understanding, only then should you offer “food for thought”.
Food for thought is not telling them they are wrong. This isn’t about right and wrong. Your food for thought should be an attempt to surface their human connection to other humans…even ones they believe aren’t worthy of that connection.
So for example, when a conservative says people who don’t work are parasites and deserve to starve, you must figure out a way to show how a person can do whatever he wants (even not work, for example) but shouldn’t have to starve. Or worse, work a job but not afford healthcare.
If you can’t do that, you have no basis for making such a claim. And a conservative will tell you.
Some conservatives (many people actually) view people negatively. Conservatives particularly believe people are lazy good-for-nuthins. People must earn their living by doing productive work, they believe. These beliefs aren’t factual. They’re conditioned or taught, which, in a rare moment of vulnerability, is exactly what a conservative told Perry recently:
…Maybe it’s because i’ve been conditioned to believe a certain way or possibly my life experience has taught me to be cautious….
A good way to chart unknown territory with a conservative: appeal to their well-known territory (for the conservative). That is, talk about liberty. But not the way conservatives talk about it.
Liberty as you may know, is a major conservative talking point. But the kind of liberty (aka “freedom”) conservatives believe in is a kind of pseudo-freedom. It’s not really freedom as it is based on coercion: As far as conservatives believe, your freedom doesn’t extend to being a lazy parasite on society. Another way of putting that is: your freedom shouldn’t cost me or anyone else. So pull your own weight.
The response to this point is: “you’re right. And in the 21st Century no one’s freedom should cost anyone anything. This is the future. Everything is possible.”
Perry likes offering this tasty morsel, which creates amazing moments that, at first, stupefies conservatives. But then leads to remarkable, real, conversations.
It begins with Perry’s definition of real freedom:
“A person who is really free can do nothing if that’s what they want to do. A person who wants to spend all their time learning to paint, play video games all day, or fish or whatever, can. And they can do those things (or anything else) without going hungry, living on the street, or getting care for their body (or mind) if necessary. If they’re free that is. They can also get all the education they need or want to learn or improve any skill while doing whatever they want without having to earn money to get those things. And…the person exercising their freedom can do so without anyone else having to do anything they don’t want to do to support that person.”
A definition like that will short circuit most people’s brains (conservative and progressive) namely because most people can’t figure out how this kind of freedom is possible. Perry explains how this is possible. Then shows how the world is careening towards exactly that outcome for everyone.
Your food for thought, therefore, must halt a conservative’s talking points in its tracks. It must get them genuinely thinking. Not spouting conservative boilerplate.
Another example: Perry was at a Starbucks recently. There he happened to sit in a nest of conservatives. That wasn’t his intent. It just happened.
One of the conservative’s asked “what do you do for a living?”
“I don’t do anything for a living,” Perry said. “I don’t believe my living requires me to do anything.”
This conservative’s friend, Mary, piped in.
“So you’re a socialist,” She said.
“No. I’m not,” Perry said.
“Then what are you?” Mary asked.
Knowing Mary was likely a conservative, and therefore Christian (which she was) Perry said “I am what Jesus is.”
That derailed Mary’s train of thought. Now Mary had to ask a question likely not included in her talking points:
“What do you mean?” She asked.
“I am that I am,” Perry said.
The conversation turned to Christianity. Perry is not Christian, but he is well-versed on fundamental accuracies upon which Christianity’s distortions are based.
So he was able to form a connection with Mary through her religious beliefs. Then he turned the conversation towards Christian compassion. He was about to ask Mary if her compassion extends to immigrants and if not why not.
But Mary ran out of time (she had to catch a plane).
Still, you can see, by not getting baited into a debate about “socialism” and name calling, and instead connecting with something Mary held dear (her Christian beliefs), Perry found room in between Mary’s boilerplate about people who she prejudges as “socialists”.
You can do this too.
And not only will the conversations you have stun you in their originality, you’ll learn that underneath all that lashing out, anger and conservative closed-mindedness is a human being wanting to be understood and connected with.
That is the short answer to this entire approach. Giving conservatives what they want, so their minds open.
If progressives really want the world they want, they must find a way to give conservatives what they want.
Until you know what that is, you can’t give it to them. And you can’t know unless you understand them. And, you can’t understand them unless you’re willing to talk with them.
And finally, if your approach is based on not understanding justified conservative fear that they’re losing everything, and that’s why they are lashing out, you’re going to have a hard time having a conversation with them.
Rancor in America and elsewhere can be mended. But you can’t expect conservatives to make the first step.
Someone has to though. That someone can be you. And this guide can help.

With Over fifteen decades of experience as a professional magician in EnglandI will tip you the secrets of employing a premium excellent magician for the event, and also the way to prevent the minimal quality magicians that may really do more harm than good to your occasion.
Trollkarl
Straightforward Magicians jargon, the 3 Chief Kinds of magicians:
Any event, it is crucial if you'd like to not just provide entertainment to your event, but to boost the air and give it that particular advantage, selecting the most appropriate magician can be somewhat more'catchy' than you might imagine. A premium excellent magician with years of expertise will not come particularly cheap, so here are some top recommendations to make sure you find the very best deal for the money.
Trollkarl
Request Google or some other search engine  How do you select them? And, how can you know they'll be the very important ingredient for your occasion?
You may observe many market on their sites exactly the very same buzzwords like'Unforgettable','Unique',''World Class Magician',''Absolutely Wonderful ',''Perfect to your occasion' etc , but just how much of this is fact, and how much that is fiction? Before long you will learn to distinguish the facts from the augmented reality.
Firstly, pick  Precisely what type of magician you believe could be ideal for your occasion. To assist you search with using search engines for the ideal magician to your event utilize the'magicians jargon' phrases together with the following to assist your hunts turn into that little bit simpler. If you'd like a magician which could mingle with your guests at a drinks reception kind surroundings you'll have to hunt for close up magicians in the regional area; should you require a magician to get a ball or supper exactly the identical search phrases or table magicians rather than close up magicians inside the regional area will provide exactly what you require, acquiring a magician work round the classes isn't any difficulty whatsoever to the practitioner, however the amateur could have a tricky time with coordinating their amusement round the meal. If you're seeking a wedding enthusiast, again you really do need someone who specializes in weddings, perhaps not especially someone that really does the'entire shebang' as it - as the old saying goes do not spread yourself too thin.  I strongly suggest not selecting a close up magician which also does children's celebrations, sadly there are lots of fantastic children's entertainers on the market, but a lot of them believe the very same rules apply to fun children as amusing adults - in fact it is an entirely different ballgame. Both are highly skilled arts.
Tricks and attempt to piggyback close up magical work out of their children's parties. Ideally in the event that you would like a children's entertainer, find someone who specializes in entertaining kids and should you'd like a magician for adults find someone that only performs high excellent magical for adults. Maybe you desire a cabaret magician, or point type amusement, there are lots of genres ; thoughts reading, humor, stand up magic, hypnotism, illusions,'Tommy Cooper kind' magicians and so forth, consider what could be ideal for your guests and event - should you believe that your audience would love a comedy magician over say that a mind reader, then hunt around for humor magicians in your region, a major trick here is to be sure they have a minumum of one video of them doing, there's not anything worse than an unfunny comedy magician!  Fantastic point magicians and illusionists are typically quite great audience pleaser's, but it is usually old fashioned style entertainment which will not suit everyone. Illusionists and conventional stage magicians are perfect when you've got international guests since they possess'non patter' acts which are performed simply to music. A fantastic mind reading series can be exceedingly impressive, it may be entirely baffling, entertaining your entire audience and also be quite amusing, however there's lots of dull mind reading reveals rather than all them are geared towards relatives when there are kids in the crowd, again check references and movies.
After  You understand just what you need for your occasion, and possibly a fashion which you believe will best fit your involvement, maybe you want the old looking magician type magician or your youthful fresh and contemporary near magician, take a look at a numerous websites until you encounter a couple that you believe could be excellent for your occasion. Pay attention to there style and picture - Whether it is a black tie occasion, you most likely don't need a magician who wears jeans and t-shirt and other casual wear to performances, even if you have got a young trendy crowd maybe you desire the rather young magician who really does dress much more casual. Maybe you need close up magic and stage magic, find out whether they provide both solutions - most will provide you a fantastic package deal for the two.
To employ someone non local for you personally who covers doing in your town, a great deal of magicians have a'one charge anyplace' for doing any place in the nation so that you aren't landed with a massive travel expenses in addition to the acting fee.
Each magician's site should have; real  Premium quality testimonials and references, photos - rather than only studio photographs but real performance photos, a movie if possible so that you may find a clearer idea about what they do, and eventually they ought to present to you all of the info that you need about there doing experience. It should let you know how long they've been doing, notable areas and businesses they've worked for and making them stick out over the crowd. When you get in touch with your brief list of magicians make certain to include all the essential info regarding your event; such as type of event, date, time, place, number of visitors, and in case you've got some notion of the budget you've allocated for a magician, or mention that as well.
Agency site will pop up with numerous magicians and other entertainments, recall brokers usually charge around 15 percent commission, which means you may wind up paying more via a broker. Sometimes it's far better to cut out the middle person to get one performer. If your event needs several functions of distinct amusement branches, bureaus are typically the best approach to visit supervise your amusement, nevertheless most magicians are going to have the ability to urge colleagues that work well together in the event that you would like to employ numerous magicians.
Unlike many professions where there Are constantly'cowboy' providers, surprisingly there are very few'cowboy magicians' on the market, but there's a massive range in grade. The simplest way to detect the fantastic excellent magicians in the reduced quality magicians is from the fee. A complete time specialist will work hard on his trade, he's got the expertise and the ability needed, devoting their life to doing magical, their commission reflects their clients will pay the commission each time to get an unbeatable support. On the opposite end of the spectrum you've got the amateur, the man just beginning, or the'experienced professional' that maybe should of retired if his tie went outside in vogue in 1963. These are normally the weekend amateurs who is going to do the task for you and will not bill you very much.  It takes a very long time to turn into a fantastic magician, amateur magicians could possibly mess up your occasion, but they may create an off the cuff remark towards the guests that's not well accepted, but their magical may not be that great or they may only be exceptionally unsuitably dressed for the occasion. Total time professional magicians need to be good in every facet of operation and people skills, normally you can not fail with a complete time professional which has all of the appropriate credentials I outlined previously.
Many Magicians provide close up magic within 1 hour or 2 hour slots, normally two hours to get about a hundred guests would be your best bet, which provides the magician sufficient time to view as many individuals as you can.
After  You've back your info, done by telephone or email, here comes the difficult part - that you will select? Unfortunately I can not make that choice for you, usually the greater magicians are going to be in precisely the exact same price range, as I mentioned previously - the reduced cost magicians will often be part time magicians which may not provide you the complete magic experience which can make your event stand out a mile. Magic is a really unique art form, the very best magicians aren't just good at magic they're also good with people which comes with several years of expertise.
Your occasion. Magic is among the most enjoyable, interesting and enjoyable   Only can it be universal in appealing all ages but may bring individuals  Collectively, even help promote products or incredibly increase the air  Of an occasion.

4 Underrated YouTube Metrics to Quantify Your Video Campaign Success
I completely understand how difficult it can be to explain to a client the value of YouTube. It does not help when video campaigns (or YouTube campaigns) are also run through Google Ads. This can set a false expectation that video campaigns can or should perform just like Search campaigns, and in most cases this is not true.
Video campaigns in Google Ads have been my favorite way to build awareness for my clients that can help someone make the decision to buy from your company further down the road. Since that viewer of these video ads may not be ready to convert right away, we cannot look at only conversions as a success metric. There are other KPIs I like to review to see if my ads are engaging the users to perform the actions we want them to take.
Here are my four favorite, underrated metrics to help measure the true value of a YouTube ad campaign.
1. “Video played to” column
It's no surprise that the main reason people go to YouTube is to watch videos. And even if the goal is to send more people to a specific landing page, the first step in a video campaign is actually seeing the video ad. That is why understanding how long people are engaging with the ad can be a good indicator of how much a user is paying attention to your message.
To view the “Video played to” metrics, you can add the column from the Performance columns menu.
Tumblr media
The column will only show you if a user watched the video up to four different milestones: 25%, 50%, 75%, or 100%. This means if a user watched the video up until the 45% mark, it will only count as hitting the 25% milestone. There is no rounding up for these columns.
I always recommend to try and have your most important message (call-to-action, value proposition, etc.) in the beginning of your video if you are running skippable TrueView in-stream ads. This is because if a user skips the video, you most likely don’t have to pay for the ad and still get your message across. But sometimes, we’re stuck with video creative that is not ideal. This is where viewing the “Video played to” metrics can help.
Tumblr media
Understanding that video ad creative lengths can vary, let’s assume your video ad’s value proposition is around the 30% mark. If a good percentage of users are not even making it to the 25% mark, it is a pretty good indication that your ad is not engaging enough to keep the user wanting to watch to the 30% mark.
If you are running TrueView discovery campaigns that use longer video creatives, this column is helpful to see how long you are keeping users engaged. This is especially true for an ad format where you are paying for the video view every single time. If you are really focused on call-to-action extension testing, your main goal could be driving traffic, and that will affect how long users watched your video ad. Just try to keep in mind all possible factors on why a user may stop watching your videos early.
2. Earned actions
For a TrueView discovery campaign, advertisers pay every time a user clicks on their ad. For skippable TrueView in-stream campaigns, advertisers mostly pay for video views (at least 30 seconds or the entire video if the ad is less than 30 seconds), but if a user interacts with a call-to-action extension, companion banner, or Shopping card first, they will only get charged once. Any other action a user takes after paying for the first view is free. These actions are called YouTube Earned Actions, and they have their own set of columns within Google Ads.
Tumblr media
After an advertiser pays for an ad, any views, shares, likes, subscribes, and playlist additions the viewer performs are free. The best part is we can track all of these post-view actions all within Google Ads. So many of my clients love hearing how we can stretch their dollar out. So even if we are not seeing direct conversions from some of our targeting, I at least want to see if users are still interacting with my brand after they have seen my video ad.
Tumblr media
If you build enough of these Earned Action metrics (with the help of whatever organic performance you may have as well), you can actually build audiences from all of these actions in Google Ads Audience Manager. That is right. Advertisers can build audiences from channel views, likes, shares, playlist additions, and subscribers. These audiences can then be used for additional remarketing on Google Search, YouTube, and Gmail campaigns. Any conversions you receive from these YouTube user audiences can then be attributed to your original video marketing efforts, thus proving the value of video even more.
3. View-through and cross-device conversions
View-through conversions showcase conversions that occur when a user sees your ad (impression) but does not interact with it. Then, the user eventually converts on your site. To clarify, an impression is not a view. We already talked about how video views are counted for in-stream ads in the Earned Action section of this post. And those view (actually watching the video or clicking on a part of the ad) conversions are visible in the Conversions column.
Cross-device conversions are recorded when a viewer clicks on one of your ads on one device. Then that same user completes a conversion on a different device. This column has been more important to my clients running video campaigns over the past couple of years. I say this because more and more we’re seeing the majority of our video views coming from mobile devices. This allows us to still attract users to our site using video ads with call-to-action extensions. Then if the site converts better on desktop, we typically see conversions happen later on a desktop. It does not mean the initial mobile video view was worthless.
Tumblr media
Both of these columns can help show if your video campaigns succeeded in converting a viewer further down the road. You just have to be really careful with reporting your cross-device conversions. Depending on what conversion columns you use as your main conversion metrics for reporting, cross-device conversions are counted in the “All conversions” column. Cross-device conversions are also included
4. Audience performance
Remember those Earned Action audiences I mentioned earlier in this post? Well those are not the only audiences you can create from YouTube users in Google Ads. Here is the full list of audiences you can create from YouTube users in Google Ads’ Audience Manager.
Tumblr media
The first thing I do in any Google Ads account I manage that is running any video campaigns is create a basic audience from anyone who viewed any video from my client’s channel. I will then max out the audience at the full 540 days. This will be the broadest type of YouTube user audience you can create and the best option for smaller accounts with not a lot of video views. I will then go and create as many of the YouTube user audiences you see above if I feel they will have a significant amount of traffic.
Next, I will want to take all of these audiences and layer them into my Search Network campaigns as Observations audiences. This is a targeting setting that is the same as saying “bid only” audiences. My initial goal is not to target the YouTube user audiences separately on search (even though it is definitely an option). My initial goal is to collect as much data on these audiences as possible.
Tumblr media
After my video campaigns are running for a while, I want to be able to go back and see if I can get any information on how my YouTube marketing efforts (yes organic YouTube efforts can be included) are impacting my Search Network campaigns. I will be able to see if people in these YouTube user audiences have higher click-through rates, conversion rates, or any other column metric that is important to your company’s goals.
These are technically remarketing lists for search ads or RLSA. And for any audience to start showing data in your Search Network campaigns, the audience needs to have at least 1,000 active users within the past 30 days. That is exactly why I recommend starting with one audience including any video view in the past 540 days. Then continue to add as many YouTube user Observation audiences to your Search campaigns once they hit the 1,000 user mark.
One more grain of salt. This audience data review will only show you how many people come back and interact with your paid keywords in Google Ads. The Audiences report in Google Ads will not show you if they went back directly to your site, if they eventually came back to your site via Bing, or even Google organic. So YouTube user audiences do not show the full picture by any means, but some data is always better than no data.
Moving beyond conversions as the only success metric
Conversions are always important, and conversions should always be kept in mind. But users are not always ready to convert the first time they see an ad. This is especially true for YouTube ads. People go to YouTube to listen to music, watch funny videos, follow their favorite gamer, etc. They do not go to YouTube to with the intent to download your whitepaper or buy your products. But YouTube can definitely build awareness in front of the right user.
If your creative resonates with your target audience, you can influence the user to eventually seek out your brand or products that lead to an eventual conversion. Use the measurement features within Google Ads to find out how well your video campaigns are doing to influence future conversions. There is so much information we can pull from Google Ads to measure true campaign success beyond direct conversions. Take advantage of it.

I took an online course!
Hello, and welcome to my first proper post under the #quarantingz tag: a little series where I chronicle all of my virtual endeavors and adventures in the time of COVID-19. Through this, I hope to achieve the following (research paper ka, gh0rl?):
Share what I’m doing with all of you guys, since it’s much easier than messaging and video calling you all one by one to confirm that yes, I am alive despite my inactivity on Messenger;
Hold myself accountable so I strive to find ways to keep myself occupied instead of sinking back into stagnancy;
Inspire you to pick up a hobby or try something out while we’re all cooped up indoors! I’ve seen a lot of my friends post that they’ve been getting so bored that even sleeping seems like a chore to them, but the four walls of your room present more opportunities than you think. Let’s try them out together!
And before anything else, it’s worth mentioning that this pandemic is not a productivity contest and we should not feel pressured into making or being the Next Big Thing. But, I believe there’s nothing wrong in seeking structure for one’s self-improvement if your mental health is up for it!
Ok. [START]
During the early weeks of the pandemic, online classes were still ongoing for students at my university, and needless to say, I was not having it. I was already worried enough about the possibility of contracting a life-threatening virus, and on top of that, I had to decipher lessons I could barely understand in a face-to-face set-up, and submit a paper on it that was worth half my grade. But thankfully my university opted to exercise cura personalis—“care for the entire person”, individualized attention to their needs—towards those who lacked the resources needed to keep up with the demands of e-learning. So, they cancelled the rest of the semester! I was filled with relief because as necessary as it might have been to stay on track, it was not an effective way to facilitate learning and retaining of information.
Which is why it’s kind of ironic that one of the first things I did once I realized I had so much free time on my hands was sign up for an online class. *cricket noises*
Tumblr media
A friend had sent me a viral listicle of 500 free Ivy League courses. I guess a lot of people had looked at the indefinite quarantine period available at their disposal as an opportunity to learn something new! And well, I couldn’t help but join along, especially since Harvard was my dream school growing up, and they were offering hundreds of programs for me to choose from. (Sorry, Ateneo. I did say otherwise on my application essay.)
Tumblr media
Growing up, I had wanted to be an author-doctor-scientist-rockstar-supermodel. I consistently proclaimed this to anyone with ears, whether they liked it or not, with all the conviction my four-year-old body held inside. I hadn't the faintest idea which degrees I needed to get to make a livelihood out of these childhood fantasies, but I figured that if I was going to be a legendary multi-hyphenate, I’d have to come from the best university in the world. I also remember negotiating with my family members from the States that I would have to live with them while I was finishing my college education, not knowing how far their humble home in Orange Country, California was from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Reality inevitably took over—more like, held the reins on my ambitions—and I had to accept that there were several constraints in place that would keep me from studying there despite my desire to.
Tumblr media
Well, that was until I chose to take up a course on rhetoric, the art of persuasive writing and public speaking under HarvardX! I picked this out of the several options because I believe learning to separate logic from emotional appeal helps me analyze an argument better and craft more well-informed decisions—definitely a skill we must have in our toolbox given today’s media landscape that is constantly inundated with fake news.
I was to learn about how arguments are structured and how rhetorical techniques are usually employed by dissecting a number of influential and prominent speeches in American history. I then had to apply these learnings in two major written requirements: an opinion editorial and speech, both on any topic of my choice.
Every morning for a week and a half, I would wake up as early as 9:00AM—just when some people on my timeline are getting ready to go to sleep—and dive straight into my lessons. I decided to take on a module a day since each was pretty packed with information in the form of readings and videos. More often than not, the flow looked like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The transcript of an address by a prominent American figure: examples of which are Former Presidents John F. Kennedy and Ronald Reagan, as well as Martin Luther King, Jr. I would annotate this with my first impressions, opinions on any lines and ideas that struck me.
The background of the speaker and the context of the speech: This honestly contributed a lot to my understanding and appreciation of the material. Although I’ve heard of most of them through almanacs I’d read as a kid, I never knew the story behind them.
The key concepts of the module: These consisted of terms and examples, as well as how to make use of them properly and to my advantage. Examples of the topics covered were modes of appeal, kinds of reasoning, and logical fallacies (my favorite).
The transcript, again: For the second round, I would have to spot the concepts that were previously taught to me, in action. When I was fully drained of my brain juice, I had the option to view and respond to the comments of my peers, as well as the lecture notes of my virtual professors. I admit I didn’t get to interact with any of my fellow students: majority of them were from different timezones. I would occasionally creep on the forums, look at the replies my peers would leave, and see I was in the presence of people from Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
Videos of actual lectures regarding the reading, held by the professor: This course is an online version of an existing in-person Harvard class called "The Elements of Rhetoric". Probably the best part of the daily lessons, because it felt like I was also sitting in, watching his students recite from the other side of the room.A quiz on the topics discussed: Very easy, and you get two attempts before you submit your final answer so it’s almost always a sure pass.
As I mentioned a while ago, there are two major outputs to be submitted and they involve a lot of writing and preliminary research. (I personally wouldn’t recommend this to you if you don’t derive pleasure from activities of that sort.) In an attempt to shed a light on a timely issue, I wrote my op-ed on the steps the Philippine government must take to rehabilitate our healthcare sector, and my speech on the use of social media as an effective political tool amid a crisis such as this. The last one was a requirement I had done for my Comm subject, which I tweaked for the sake of formality.
The op-ed was subject to self-evaluation: I had to answer questions on whether my submission met the set criteria or not and give proof as to why I thought so. The speech, on the other hand, was graded by two anonymous peers, who gave encouraging remarks and cited points for improvement. Although I knew I gave my best, my final grade was very much dependent on what they thought of my work so I was a bit nervous. Thankfully, everything went well: I got a perfect score on almost every component and secured a certificate of completion (which I had to pay for, but looks great on my Linkedin, if I do say so myself).
Tumblr media
Overall, I enjoyed a lot and found the learnings I picked up to be useful. The ideas might seem abstract but the building blocks of rhetoric pepper even the minutiae of our daily conversations, whether we're aware of it or not. All of us engage in discourse and form our stances on issues using emotion, authority, or hard facts. We elaborate on them by stating the general premise then delving into specific examples, or the other way around. Our last resort tends to be a form of character assassination, faulty generalization, or leading question. The list goes on! I don't think I can speak or listen without policing someone in my head!My response towards this experience is a far cry from how I felt towards my required online classes for school, it's true. But, there are several factors that differentiated both of them.
I was able to choose what I wanted to study. No Quantitative Methods or Computer Science being forced down my throat (although I am revisiting my lessons in those respective subjects after I’m done with everything else I want to do, because I remember my parents paid for those). I am free to invest in areas outside the scope of my degree and gain key insight from the most reputable institutions around the world. I have the luxury to study to test something out, to see if it’s simply a hobby or a potential minor/double degree/career trajectory. If I find out after a few sessions that it’s not my cup of tea, I can easily unenroll and move on. Trying to do that in college would lead to disastrous consequences.
Another thing I liked was the freedom I had to go through everything at my own pace, mull over what I wanted to write for as long as I needed to, rewind and go back to parts in the videos that I liked. Additionally, if I wasn’t in the mood to do anything productive on a certain day (it happens to everyone), I could easily do so without the fear of missing out on anything. I know that a handful of courses do require you to stick to a schedule but everything is still within a reasonable time frame.
Now, I understand that several things are chipping away at our (deteriorating) focus right now. It’s hard enough when school demands so much of our energy—I remember my Quant prof had offered to teach us once via Zoom and though if we were only preoccupied with Netflix and trashtalkan groups back then, we collectively decided to ditch him. But, if you’re determined and committed to learning for leisure purposes, here are some tips that helped me hold myself accountable!
Tumblr media
Tidy up, both physically and mentally.
Find a workspace that is conducive to learning. In the absence of a desk in a bedroom, the living room couch or the dining table when no one's eating meals are suitable alternatives. As long as there is a constant source of light, little to no noise, and a simple set-up that minimizes the chances of you leaving your work, it should be perfect!
And while we’re on that note, eliminate distractions. I only had my notebook, pen, and correction tape on the table along with my laptop: I made use of the Forest app regularly as well and now I have a nice collection of various shrubs and trees. I even put my phone on top of the cabinet, God knows my sedentary lifestyle keeps me from exerting the effort needed to stand up and reach for it.
If you aren’t sure that you can devote your full attention to the task at hand, get someone you trust to help you! I update my mom that I’ve been studying and fill her in on my progress not only because I am naturally predisposed to telling her everything going on my life, but also so she can help keep me on the right track and ensure I do my work.
Take it seriously.
Allot a specific time of the day for it. That way, it’s easier to integrate it into your routine and stop you from bailing halfway. For me, it's not advisable to go at it early in the morning, because your mind won't be ready to process anything of that scale. But, it has to be one of the first tasks of the day so you can avoid putting it off in favor of whatever your subconscious feels is more interesting.
Take notes when needed, complete the assigned activities seriously without consulting other sources, and participate in the forums as a substitute for recitation! Be the star student you wanted to be, but were probably too shy to turn into for the fear of being smart-shamed by your peers!
Try to see the purpose in what you’re doing.
In my case, it gave me the motivation to finish it so I could apply it in real-life situations and make the necessary changes in my behavior and habits.
This definitely isn’t the last online course I’m taking: as a matter of fact, I have a couple lined up! I’m currently working my way through something on strategic planning by this website called Culture and Creativity. Although the material has been tailor-fit to address the social and economic development of countries in Eastern Europe, the concepts can easily be utilized in local contexts. Here’s a list of other programs that caught my eye while I was browsing the different catalogs across other platforms.

20 Bold and Beautiful Blue Chairs in the Bedroom
Tumblr media
Considering the truth that we already have recorded a couple of lists right here in House Design Lover about bedrooms and about chairs – I by no means thought for one 2nd why haven’t i believed about prioritizing this listing as a result of that is my favorite colour! i've made one recently approximately crimson chairs in the bedrooms and yet I’m developing this one just now. if you had been following the lists that I’ve been making, i think that you just could have noticed my fascination with the colour blue. Anyway, since we are already in this topic, why don’t we pass ahead and discover this record with essentially the most glorious, fun and unique blue chairs that there's in the marketplace. when you can, notice how so much comfy the entire chairs are in this listing – and that i might think this is as a result of these chairs can be found in the bed room – relaxed chairs had been chosen, take a look at it out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lim Design Studio, Inc. To kick off this checklist is a lovely and cushty-looking blue chair that one way or the other resembles a bean bag. the color of the chair is a little bit very similar to that of the color on the window. Despite The Fact That this bed room seems actually relaxed and neat, i think the minimalist subject makes the blue chair stand out much more than that poop pillow at the mattress.
Tumblr media
Jerry Jacobs Design, Inc. Shared bedrooms actually fascinate me; belonging to a circle of relatives during which space is restricted and having a dual sister, i've always shared a bed room with someone – and well, as much a space for oneself is sweet, sharing it with someone at all times provides me comfort.
Tumblr media
Lischkoff Layout Planning What are you able to say approximately the colour combination that this bed room have? The blues and the purple in some way make itself paintings. Including the white lamps and the white drawers created a more impartial glance but still keeping up that sophisticated feel and aura.
Tumblr media
Lindesay Development Neatly, what do recognise! a big bed room and setting! I’m positive that there may be something that may enclose this bed room (evidently) and i feel it’s superior and even breathe-taking to only be in this space on account of how a lot nature you spot on every occasion you actually open your eyes.
Tumblr media
Connie Cooper Designs Now, right here we are with a bedroom designed by Connie Cooper Designs. the colour aggregate is just adorable and trendy, I should say. It’s a great deal unique and one way or the other out of this global – but now not in a nasty or bad manner. i love how the fashion designer actually went out of the field in this one. Perhaps that is one common colour aggregate, however i feel this was once achieved with grace and a surprising consequence was once produced.
Tumblr media
Blutter Shiff Layout Pals A lovable lounge chair is highlighted in this bed room photograph. i feel that this very white bed room is like heaven sent. The blues in reality stands proud and yet it still continues an excessively promising house worth your money. If I’d actually have this bed room to myself, i believe I’d consider myself luckier than such a lot – blessed even.
Tumblr media
Smith & Vansant Architects PC I don't have the exact identify of this charming blue armchair but i think that it’s okay – particularly that this chair seems to be pretty at ease as it and the place it is. The view of the outdoors is rather inviting when you ask me – I’m not really an outdoorsy-type of particular person with this view from my window (if ever), i'd in point of fact rethink my circumstances.
Tumblr media
Patrick Brian Jones PLLC This bed room positive has a fantastic view. excluding having glass home windows, the view outdoor is just impressive. Final the drapes on this bedroom looks as if a nasty idea understanding that there are so much of beautiful things waiting out of doors to be came upon.
Tumblr media
Texture Inside Design The table lamps in right here is simply fascinating – it has a novel colour mixture which makes it somehow hip and a laugh; after which by including the blue throw pillows and accent chair created an entire new revel in, especially for me. It presentations us an effortless but superior risk of a color combination that actually pans out.
Tumblr media
Staffan Tollgard Design Staff Check Out the blue chair via the window having a look all-fabulous! Impartial-colored areas are really nice to beautify; and i think, looking at this bedroom, including the lovely blue chair created an charisma that makes this space slightly a treat!
Tumblr media
Turnquist Layout I Know that it could be slightly farther on this photograph, however I’m sure that you just can see the blue front room chair obviously in here. The royal blue colour is simply great – it stands proud in this space where we see impartial colours surrounding it – excluding the pretty view out of doors – which me notice that the placement of the living room chair is solely best possible!
Tumblr media
Wonderful Design Interiors, Inc. The Colors observed in this bedroom is very a laugh! Blue and inexperienced is actually a popular mixture that works neatly, especially in case you find the ones two tones that will in reality mix in combination and well complement one another – just like on this bed room. And, oh, by means of the best way, i really like the egg chair on this bed room photo.
Tumblr media
Simplicit Interiors, LLC Have You observed the newest installment of Captain The Us? Take Into Account That the building the place the King of a few united states of america was killed in a bombing? the other construction which we see through the massive window by some means jogged my memory of that. Staying in a lodge within the heart of the city is nice as soon as in some time (well nicer in case you’re used with it), but i think i'd nonetheless prefer seeing trees outdoor my bed room window.
Tumblr media
Jessica Helgerson Inner Layout A prime again blue arm chair is adorning this simple but homey bedroom. the massive bed with those large bookshelves on either side of the windows is solely a beautiful sight to get up to each morning. in the event you inquire from me, i think that if this bed room had a unique colour for the bed, i believe this may prettier; but alternatively, the blue arm chair pops right out and it’s in order that cool and fun!
Tumblr media
Massucco Warner Miller Interior Design I Actually like the gentle colors in this bedroom – the white and blue mixture particularly on the pillows are fascinating. excluding this vacation home being by way of the seaside, i feel the colour combination is simply very good. I additionally love the striped arm chairs that is just beside the night stand.
Tumblr media
Bahdeebahdu With a color palette to work with (perhaps from the customer or their recommendation), designers are able to manage how one area can in truth appear to be. in this case, we can see how the matte black and lightweight grays create that feelings of darkness however this used to be lightened up through the softer shades of blue and white (and perhaps the plants too!).
Tumblr media
SUBU Layout Architecture In a contemporary, white bed room like this one, designers and residential house owners can be in a position to really play and test as to what they really need for the positive house. Like I said as soon as before, an empty room is a blank canvass that designers can in reality do their magic on.
Tumblr media
Seamless Designs The velvety blue accent chair in this bedroom positive is lovely. if you happen to might need noticed, this bedroom has the most neutral colors used on the partitions, the ground or even in the mattress sheets. the large mirror in here is quite a charming piece that completes this bed room.
Tumblr media
Jill Greaves Design This bedroom has a adorable set of furniture that you perhaps will not simply in finding in the marketplace. i love the gorgeous base, headboard and evening stand and the accent portray at the wall – or, smartly, the wallpaper, i guess. This bed room is a wonderful example of a contemporary bed room.
Tumblr media

Pin Me!
It’s been quite a while since I’ve done the Freedom Life monthly recaps, but I decided it’s finally time to get back into it! That said, I may or may not have started writing this post with the intent of it just being a July monthly recap and then… got too busy to finish it. Story of my life…
So anyway, here’s what I was up to this summer living in Tbilisi, Georgia!
On the way to Kazbegi!
What I Was Up To This Summer
Over the last two months, I’ve been very busy! Firstly, Chris and I took a quick weekend trip to Kazbegi along the Georgia Military Highway!
In addition to that small trip, I attended a baby shower, prevented my cat from dying via surgery, rescued a NEW kitten, launched a new website with Chris, and more!
**For those of you who are concerned about me traveling during COVID-times, the Republic of Georgia handled the pandemic very well (we only had 17 deaths TOTAL) and things are really starting to open up. We did have a very strict mask protocol at the hotel though, and we specifically went to the countryside where we could explore with almost no people.
Where I Went in July
Tbilisi, Georgia
Mtskheta, Georgia
Pasanauri, Georgia
Kazbegi, Georgia
Sno, Georgia
Gudauri, Georgia
Gergeti Trinity Church is lit up behind me!
Highlights
Here are the best moments from July and August!
A Quick Trip to Kazbegi
After being cooped up in a small apartment for months and months, Chris and I were so excited to finally get out and see a bit more of Georgia. Unfortunately for us, we only had about 2 months to enjoy Georgia before lockdown, so aside from a quick wine tasting day trip, we really hadn’t seen much of the country!
Now that things are (almost) back to normal here, we decided to head to Kazbegi in the mountains near the Russian border. The lack of tourism has been really hard for all of these beautiful mountain towns, so it was nice to be able to provide some business while enjoying the fresh (and chilly) mountain air.
We booked a heavily discounted room at Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, which is one of the nicest local hotel chains in Georgia. It was so nice to take a few days away, and enjoy the beautiful view of the mountains and Gergeti Trinity Church.
Honestly, I think Kazbegi is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been to in my life.
The Russia Georgia Friendship Monument!
Driving the Georgian Military Highway
Driving to and from Kazbegi was an adventure in and of itself! We hired an awesome driver named Timo from GoTrip.ge, who not only stopped at all the major sights along the Georgian Military Highway, he also suggested additional stops and activities for us!
On the way to Kazbegi, we had the opportunity to visit Mtskheta to see the beautiful Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in town and the Jvari Monastery which sits up on a hill giving you an incredible view of the entire town.
We also stopped at the famous Ananuri Fortress, Pasanauri for their amazing khinkali dumplings, Sakuriani to drink mineral water from a natural spring just off the highway, an area just off the highway with “sticky rocks” you could climb up without slipping despite the slight waterfall, and of course, the Russia-Georgia Friendship Monument, which we had completely to ourselves!
On the way back a few days later, we stopped at Sno to see the famous carved head sculptures of Georgian poets, and we even got to take an hour-long cable car through the mountains to Gudauri! We really thought the cable car would be closed considering no one was there, but they let us ride which was such a fun surprise! That said, it was super weird to ride a cable car for an hour and see NO ONE.
Honestly, the trip to and from Kazbegi is amazing, and I’ll have to write a blog post about it soon!
Fruit Baby!
Attending my First Baby Shower
This July was my first experience attending a baby shower! Two of our friends are having a baby literally any day now, so it was very fun to be able to celebrate with them!
We played baby-themed trivia, ate tons of great food, and there was even a gender-reveal with cupcakes! I also loved being able to shop for a few cute baby things as a gift!
Chris and I Launched Multiple Nerdgasms
Over the last two months, Chris and I launched a brand new blog together: Multiple Nerdgasms! This is a site where we can talk about one of our other loves: Dungeons and Dragons. (Yes, we’re both giant nerds).
Chris has been DM’ing D&D games for 24 years (seriously), and I started playing a few years ago. While I used to play once every two weeks, during lockdown, I got involved in three different online D&D games!!
Chris and I thought it would be interesting to write about D&D from the perspective of both the player and the DM, as well as exploring both a male and female perspective. I’ve already written a few posts for the site, and set up social media accounts. I can’t wait to keep writing more!
Surprisingly, the very first post I wrote about gender equality and D&D actually got a lot of traction! People were sharing it on Twitter in women’s D&D groups, and many people reached out to me with their own stories of sexism in D&D. I even inspired a few men I know to create strong female characters.
it’s hard to get a good picture of him
I Rescued a Kitten
So at the end of August (aka last week), I may or may not have rescued ANOTHER cat. After coming home from a nice dinner out, Chris and I stepped out of the taxi and were immediately accosted by a 2-month-old kitten who wouldn’t stop meowing at us.
He looked fairly healthy, so we thought that there was a possibility he belonged to someone in the area, especially considering the fact that he kept running up to people, looking for help/food.
We were originally going to leave him because we didn’t want to take someone’s cat, and even if he was a stray, Georgia has a ton of street cats and kittens that do very well. We even waited for a solid 40-minutes just to see if we could find a mother or owner, but no one came for him.
But on the way home, this little kitten decided to follow us, almost getting hit by two different cars in the process! Worried that he wasn’t going to survive on his own outside, we decided to take him home until we could figure out where he belongs.
After a visit to the vet the next day, we learned that he is definitely a street kitten, but doesn’t have great street-smarts and was relying on people for food and attention. Now he’s happily at home with us and is probably the most loving kitten I’ve ever met in my life. So… welcome to the family?

Challenges
This summer wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows. Here’s what didn’t go so well…
My Cat Almost Died
If you didn’t already know, I’ve been fostering a cat named Yasmina for a few months now. She’s also a street rescue and has a ton of medical problems. At the beginning of the summer, Yasmina started to go really downhill. She was having a lot of trouble pooping, barely ate, slept constantly, and appeared to be in immense pain.
I kept taking her to the vet, who gave her IV treatments and lots of medicine, but she wasn’t getting any better. We even gave her an enema to try and clear out her bowels! (She hated it).
While my vet seemed great (and refused to take any money for any of these treatments?!!), she also didn’t speak English very well and couldn’t really take the time to fully explain to me what was wrong with Yasmina. I kept offering to pay her (seriously, she’s a saint), hoping she would give me more time, but even the paying clients were extremely rushed in this very busy clinic. I started feeling like it might be worth my time to go to a different vet that comes highly recommended from other expats in Tbilisi.
So after not hearing back from the original vet for a few days, and getting very worried about Yasmina not making it, I had Chris take her into the Veterinary Clinic at Georgia Agriculture University. Apparently, Yasmina is 8-10 years old NOT 2-3 like a vet originally told the girl who rescued her, and her biggest problem is not her kidneys, but the fact that she had a solid kilo of poop stuck in her intestine! She needed to undergo emergency surgery IMMEDIATELY and there was only a 50-50 shot she’d make it due to her age and medical problems.
On hearing this, I contacted the company I work for remotely and asked to have my remaining shift covered while I raced to get to the hospital to be there for her surgery. The entire surgery I was so nervous I felt sick! But thankfully she’s such a strong girl, she came out of surgery just fine, and has completely recovered!
I had to give her a lot of medicine, and take her in for IVs every day (and this vet clinic is NOT nearby my house…). I also have to feed her Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Wet food in 4 small servings a day which is not cheap.. but it’s a small price to pay for my fluffy baby!
As of now, Yasmina is a completely different cat. She’s constantly playing with toys, and went from barely ever making a sound to becoming an extremely talkative little lady. A little too talkative to be honest…
At least I have khinkali
My Course Launch Didn’t Go As Planned
As many of you know, I have an online course and coaching program called Teach Abroad Squad that helps people to be successful teaching abroad in China!
Understandably, this year has not been great for my business. With the Chinese borders closed and no end to COVID in sight, it’s been a tough year for me.
That said, I did have a very successful launch of my program in April! I had my highest grossing launch yet, and had a bunch of really awesome people join the program. I’ve been working with a business coach who has really helped me through the entire thing (from positioning for the pandemic to dealing with my many mindset issues about selling during this time).
So after that successful launch in April, I decided to do another one in July! I made the free webinar training even longer and better, and had just as many people sign up as I did in April. However, no one joined the program, despite many people seeming interested.
Honestly, this is not really something I wanted to be open about, because I felt really ashamed of the results. I have this fear that if I talk about the struggles I’ve had with my program this year, people will think Teach Abroad Squad isn’t a success and they won’t want to join.
But deep down, I know Teach Abroad Squad is an incredible course, and I have full confidence in it. It’s really just the current situation that’s made things very hard.
Back in April, people still had a lot of hope that the borders would be open by now. So investing in Teach Abroad Squad was a no-brainer! But now with the pandemic raging in many countries like the US with no end in sight, I have the feeling that many people are choosing to hold off until things become more stable.
That said, it doesn’t make my July launch any less disappointing! I put a ton of time and work into promoting Teach Abroad Squad, and sometimes it’s hard not to equate your business to your own self-worth. It’s definitely something I’m working on!
This failed launch has definitely given me the time and perspective to look at potentially creating a second program I’m really proud of, with a different topic that’s more relevant right now.
While I still love and fully support Teach Abroad Squad (I mean, we do live Q&A’s weekly and monthly Zoom Coaching Calls!), it might make the most sense for me to stop pushing it for the moment and focus some energy on a new topic. Now, just to figure out what that topic will be…
For those of you who are interested in Teach Abroad Squad, I’ve decided to put a hold on webinars and big promotions for now. So if you want to join, I’m leaving the cart wide open for you! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!
Drinking cocktails with social distancing in Kazbegi
Work Overload: Course Launch, Freelancing, and Interviewing!
Most of July and parts of August were EXTREMELY stressful for me. Earlier in the summer, I started a new part-time job interviewing Chinese students for their college admissions applications, which has been a great source of extra income, but also takes up a lot of the time I used to use to work on my blog and Teach Abroad Squad.
I also have a position working as a social media manager for my business coach Merilyn! Yes, I joined her Lead Your World program, and then she ended up hiring me a few months later to do Social Media! (I help run her Facebook Page and Facebook Group!)
Trying to do these two jobs, and run a launch for Teach Abroad Squad, while also running my cat to the vet 30 minutes outside of town DAILY… is a giant recipe for burnout.
I ended up having major pain in my jaw that’s only just now calming down. But wow, I really overloaded myself these last two months… hence, why this blog post never got published and it’s a 2-month recap!
Georgian bread and cheese on the balcony for brunch!
Major Payment Plan Issues
To make financial matters worse, I had a few people in my program ask me to postpone their payment plan payments by a month due to financial issues. While I wouldn’t normally allow this, I know COVID has been super rough for everyone, so I allowed the payments to be pushed back by a month and followed the instructions from MemberPress to put their payment plans on pause.
IT WAS A DISASTER.
Not only did the system charge them anyway, but it also created a second subscription for them when I turned their access back on, meaning it charged them TWICE the next month. WTF!
Unfortunately for me, MemberPress only does tech support via email (seriously! It’s a paid service!), and my tech support person literally had no idea what I did wrong when I sent them screenshots of my system. They eventually had to get more advanced tech support in the backend of my website to try and fix the problem. It was a complete nightmare and I’m still mad.
Look at them not killing each other!
Trying to Introduce My New Kitten
While I’ve loved having my new kitten Mordie, my older cat Yasmina has NOT been happy. We’ve had to keep Mordie in the bathroom while Yasmina gets accustomed to him, and then we bring him into the bedroom to hang out for large chunks during the day and evening.
I know this is normal, but we have a very small apartment, and keeping them separate has been hard!
Not to mention, Yasmina was pissed at ME for bringing him home. She’d even smell his scent on my hand and growl at me. One day Mordie escaped into the living room and she was so mad she slapped me in the face! She also completely refused to come in the bedroom because it smelled like him, and hissed at me the one time I brought her in there.
Finally, after a week she’s starting to come around. They even napped next to each other on the bed today and she only hissed at him if he tried to come within a foot of her. Baby steps!
Here’s a Georgian tomato and cucumber salad with walnut paste
The USA is a Giant Mess
I could write an entire post on this, but this summer has really showcased that the US has some big problems they need to fix. Firstly the way we’ve handled the pandemic is absolutely ridiculous (and this is coming from someone who lives in a country that locked down hard and only had 17 deaths nationally). Then on top of this, the police brutality and reactions towards the BLM movement is horrifying.
While I’m glad I’m in Georgia right now, there is definitely a part of me that wishes I was in the US so I could participate in the BLM protests to demand racial equality, police accountability, and justice for the many victims of police violence and racism.
I’ve been trying to do my part to help, and have the difficult conversations with the few people in my newsfeed (and on my Adventures Around Asia page!!) who just DON’T get it. While I would typically just block these people for my sanity, I’ve realized that this isn’t productive. But wow, is it EXHAUSTING to talk with people who refuse to recognize their own biases, and will literally never change their minds.
But every time I feel like I just want to walk away, I remember that many people don’t have the privilege to do so. I think many of us have felt exhausted, hurt, and angry these last few months, and I really hope the protests (and upcoming election) create some positive change for our country.

This month I want to give a shoutout to my amazing Teva W Ysidro Sandals that have gotten me through the summer. Not only are these things super cute and go with pretty much every outfit, but they’re also SO comfortable and supportive. They even have extra cushioning on the ball and heel of the shoe!
I had a pair a few years ago that I literally wore to death, which is why I was so excited to get these for Christmas! Now that the weather is warm I can finally wear them.

What I’m Reading Now: Wisdom of the Enneagram
If you didn’t know, I’m more than a little obsessed with the Enneagram, a personality categorization and self-help tool. The Wisdom of the Enneagram is considered by many to be the “Enneagram Bible” and the book that you really need to read if you want to learn the Enneagram in-depth.
While I’ve owned Wisdom of the Enneagram for quite a while now and had read through most of it, I decided to start reading through from the beginning again now that I have a better understanding of the Enneagram. I’m also taking notes and highlighting important info!
I honestly feel like I’m back in college again and I don’t even mind. It’s always fun to learn something new!

What I’m Up to in September
To be honest, I don’t have any big plans for September, but there are a few things that I want you all to keep me accountable on!
Firstly, I plan to start writing a blog post EVERY WEEK on Adventures Around Asia. I know, right? I’ve been so horrible about writing since the pandemic started because I just haven’t felt the passion for travel right now (and neither does anyone else…).
My plan is to write every week about something I’m passionate about, whether or not it has anything to do with travel. To be honest, most of what I’ll say will at least be tangentially related to my life traveling and living abroad (because that’s my life!), but I’m not pressuring myself to write travel articles and teach abroad posts right now when I just really don’t feel inspired.
I hope you all enjoy my passion-led blog posts this autumn and keep me accountable if I haven’t posted anything in over a week!!

Six key content performance aspects that Google Analytics can’t measure
Google Analytics (GA) is one of the most popular traffic analytics tools for websites, but it can have serious drawbacks for anyone looking to measure content performance.
The problem is systemic: Analytics was built to track traffic for ecommerce and content sites, with the structure of its reports built around pageviews. It can provide some sophisticated data around those views – what kinds of audience members are behind them, how they might have arrived, what they did next, and other such questions – but today’s content marketers need the ability to measure and understand much more than that.
How do people interact with your content when they’re viewing an individual landing page? How do they feel about your brand after having been exposed to it on other media channels? Where are they running into conversion roadblocks? What are the content assets across touchpoints that people are consuming most on their paths to conversion? What assets are most compelling to your most qualified individual leads?
GA can hint at some of the answers to these types of questions, but to truly understand these aspects of your content marketing performance, you’ll need to turn elsewhere.
Here are a few of the biggest ways that Google Analytics can’t measure your content performance properly, along with some tips for overcoming these shortcomings.
1. On-page behavior
Google Analytics only tracks page views and movement within your site. Unless you manually add layers of event tracking, it can’t reveal what people do within specific pages. You’ll never know if visitors get two lines into your content and then get distracted by an interesting link.
This is the value of heatmaps, which are remarkably effective at showing user behavior. They map out which areas of the page get the most view time and the most clicks, and where the mouse rests.
A heatmap shows areas that get the most attention in red, shading to blue for those that get the least. It reveals whether the visitor engaged and interacted with the page, or left it open and unread for hours. With a heatmap, you can discover the most popular parts of your pages, the navigation links people click on most, and whether key elements below the fold are going unseen.
To get started experimenting with heatmaps, you can try using Hotjar, Lucky Orange or CrazyEgg.
2. Brand sentiment lift
Google Analytics is limited to tracking page views on your own website. It can’t tell you anything about the impact of your content on earned or shared media channels, where you don’t have the ability to install its tracking pixel. And even if you could use it track content views on all channels, you still wouldn’t know much about the impact that the content has on brand sentiment, or your share of voice in the general market.
Instead, use a social listening tool to track what people think about your brand. Social listening tools track social media shares, comments, reactions and mentions. This information has many key use cases, one of which is gaining a holistic view of brand sentiment.
The better platforms track far more than the number of brand mentions on social media, using semantic text analysis to reveal the emotions behind the posts and comparing these signals to those of your competitors. Merge these trends with your timeline of content marketing achievements, and correlations will start to emerge.
To get started experimenting with social listening for brand sentiment tracking, you can try using Awario, Mention or Talkwalker.
3. Friction points on forms
If a visitor tries to complete an online form and gives up in frustration, Google Analytics will never let you know. The best it can do is to show you how much time all visitors spent on the page. (Even this information can be extremely misleading since GA measures page view durations starting from the moment given page loads to the moment the next internal page loads. If your visitor stays for 10 minutes, reads your article from top to bottom, shares it, and then closes the tab without browsing any further within your site, GA will register ‘zero’ time on page.)
When it comes to lead capture forms, contact forms, and sales checkout forms, it can be hard to tell how many fields you’re best off including. The fewer fields your forms have, the lesser friction people will have opting in, which makes for more conversions.
On the other hand, the more fields you include, the more data you’ll have to work with when people do complete and submit forms, which is useful for identifying personas when executing segmented nurture sequences. You’ll also learn more about your audience, and you’ll be in the best possible position for determining the relevance of your leads. And there’s something to be said for asking a lot of your audience, as it helps to filter out people who are “just curious” about your lead magnet and will never actually do business with you.
To really understand the extent to which form fields are serving as roadblocks on the path to conversion, turn to your form builder tool’s analytics. The better platforms will reveal partial submissions, and how far a user gets through a form before abandoning it, so you can see if any single field is too long or question too confusing.
To get started experimenting with form conversion optimization, I recommend Formstack, Formismo or Jotform.
4. The identity of every visitor
One of GA’s biggest weaknesses is its inability to give context to visitor behavior. It can’t show you much about the identity of your visitors – at best, you can segment data about your entire pool of visitors according to their physical locations, devices, referrers, rough demographics and points of entry to your site.
What’s more, Google Analytics only uses a sample of your visitors, so that even if you tinker with your report settings to reveal the IP addresses of individual sessions, you can’t rely on this information as a comprehensive source of individual user insights.
Instead of GA, use audience intelligence tools that provide information about the interests, behavior, personal data (in a GDPR-compliant manner, of course.) and historic activity of every user, so that you can gain a deeper understanding of your visitors. This allows you to fine-tune your content to appeal to your audience, and it also reveals opportunities for account-based marketing.
To get started with audience intelligence, try Albacross, LinkedIn Website Demographics or Visitor Queue.
5. Funnel analytics
It is possible to use Google Analytics to track users through your funnel and measure its effectiveness. However, setting this all up can be highly complicated. You have to build a confusing series of filters and a dedicated URL structure that allows GA to correlate content pages with each stage of the funnel.
It’s much better to use a single tool that follows users through your funnel. Pick one that logs abandonment points and the cumulative impact of your various key funnel touchpoints. You’ll also need a good way to track the activity of returning visitors, which is another weak point for GA, thanks to uncertainty about cookies, lack of reliability when tracking visitors across devices, and the aforementioned notorious data sampling issue.
And if you integrate a funnel analytics tool with your CRM, logging each lead’s engagement activity on your website, you’ll be in great shape to set up a smart lead scoring system for identifying sales-readiness levels.
To get started with funnel analytics, check out Kissmetrics, Woopra or Yandex Metrica.
6. Off-site interactions
Google Analytics only measures interactions with the content on your own site. It’s not something you can use to measure the impact of content on shared, paid or earned media. So that guest post you recently published on someone else’s blog, or your LinkedIn Publisher articles, for example, will be blind spots for you.
GA can show you information about some of the visits you acquired via clickthroughs from these media presences, but that’s about it.
You’ll get better results from a multi-channel dashboard tool that pulls together user analytics from all channels, including email marketing, advertising tools, and social media. This type of solution can’t show you how people found your content on these properties, nor where they went next if they didn’t end up on your website, but it will help you consolidate all your metrics into one centralized dashboard for a more holistic analysis.
What’s more, if you combine data relating to engagement on all touchpoints into one timeline, you’ll start to see correlations between spikes on certain channels and website conversions, which can point you in the right direction for further drill-downs
To get started with multi-channel dashboards, try Klipfolio, Databox or Geckoboard.
Google Analytics isn’t a magic button
Google Analytics is hugely popular, but it can’t do everything, especially if you’re concerned about content performance. Fortunately, there are other tools that fill the gaps GA leaves behind, giving you a much clearer understanding of your content marketing success.

Following an investigation into Santa Cruz Public Libraries’ (SCPL) use of Gale Analytics on Demand, a California grand jury reported on June 24 that the use of data analytics tools by libraries “is a potential threat to patron privacy and trust.” The report’s broadly negative view regarding the use of big data and analytics software raises several questions about library privacy policies and how they should apply to the use of any data collected about patrons by third parties, when patrons have not explicitly given libraries permission to use that data.
This finding wasn’t the result of a lawsuit. California’s Superior Court convenes 58 separate civil grand juries each year—one for each of the state’s counties. These carry out several functions, including “investigating and reporting on the operations of local government.” In this watchdog role, a grand jury acts as a representative for county residents, generating recommendations for improving operations and enhancing local government accountability. Any local government entity subject to an investigation is required to respond to the recommendations within 90 days. In this case, the investigation was launched in early 2019, in response to concerns raised by SCPL staff.
These recommendations are not legally binding, and the report explains that SCPL’s use of Analytics on Demand does not appear to have violated any state laws. In addition, SCPL Director Susan Nemitz told LJ that the combination of staff concerns about utilizing commercial big data software to analyze patron habits, and the sense that it would require a major initiative to integrate Analytics on Demand into the library’s marketing efforts, had already led SCPL leadership to discontinue use of the tool prior to the investigation.
“Even though it’s a relatively simple product” to use, she explained, library management ultimately decided that “it really would take a major staff effort to make it part of our institutional research processes. So I don’t think our experiments [with Analytics on Demand] really went very far.”
Analytics on Demand is built on Experian Mosaic, a demographic analysis and classification tool used by many businesses for neighborhood-level analysis of customers and potential customers. Mosaic classifies households into 19 groups and 71 unique types such as “middle-class melting pot” or “young, city solos.” Since it is driven by the vast trove of consumer data collected and aggregated by multinational credit-reporting agency Experian, the tool can generate a lot of information, reporting demographic composition and predicting consumer habits, product preferences, and the prevailing attitudes of neighborhoods—or even individual households.
SCPL officials had used an Analytics on Demand license provided by the Pacific Library Partnership (PLP) consortium for a handful of projects beginning in 2017, Nemitz said.
“We aren’t a large library system—we don’t have a huge marketing team—so we had a couple of staff…go to a [PLP] training at Oakland Public,” she explained. “For us, the interest was, we collect no demographic data on our users. Could we [use Analytics on Demand to] provide our funding bodies with some reports about demographic use? Proving that we are serving low-income patrons? Another thing that we looked at when temporarily closing a branch, was…where to put temporary services. We did do one marketing thing to try to figure out where history programs geared toward older adults might be best presented.”
These uses are typical for Analytics on Demand, and indicative of pressures common throughout the library field, including limited outreach budgets and a demand for specific information about a library’s usage and local impact from government and other funding bodies. Yet SCPL’s staff concerns are also reflective of the tension between the implicit promise of privacy for library users and the competition of library services with commercial entities, such as Amazon, that have expansive data collection and analysis policies built into their terms of service agreements.
According to the report, a key sticking point for concerned SCPL staff was that by inputting address information into Analytics on Demand, the library was downloading significant household-level data that patrons had never consented to give the library.
“This gets into the question of combining data sets,” explained Becky Yoose, Library Data Privacy Consultant for LDH Consulting Services. “You have patron data in your integrated library system. You have patron data collected by individual electronic systems, like your catalog, your web analytics software, your electronic resources, [and] authentication systems like EZproxy. The issue comes when you start combining this information in one central place—especially when you’re combining this information with other external datasets that might have other sensitive or ‘high-risk’ data,” including information that could personally identify a user.
In addition, SCPL staff expressed concern about how Gale might be using patron data generated by the platform. Noting that the grand jury report did not include any specific recommendations for Gale, company representatives declined to comment for this article. However, the report cited prior SCPL communication with Gale, in which the company stated that “Gale does not personally handle the library data. There is no need for someone outside the library to manually review, handle, or receive files, like there is with other services. All data is submitted to [Analytics on Demand] directly by the library. In other words, there is no data being ‘exchanged with third parties’…. When the tool generates reports, the library can delete the report at their discretion. There is nothing maintained by us or [any additional third] party. The only information [Analytics on Demand] requires to function is an address. We do not require a name or any other identifiable information that is not public record.”
These statements imply that libraries using Analytics on Demand are pulling data directly from Experian Mosaic via patron address ranges, and Gale is not storing or exchanging any resulting reports with other third parties. Still, the grand jury report found that the library’s use of Analytics on Demand was inconsistent with its policy on Confidentiality of Library Records and companion document, “Information We Keep About You,” which was most recently revised in 2010. Among its many recommendations, the report states that the use of any data analytics tools should be clearly addressed in privacy policies. Patrons should be informed about their use, and all vendor contracts should be thoroughly vetted to ensure that vendors protect the interests of patrons and libraries.
Carol Frost, CEO of PLP and executive director, Peninsula Library System, noted that the grand jury process is not yet complete (SCPL’s reply to the report is due September 23), and PLP wished to honor that process in comments to LJ. But she added that “the section of the report which applies to PLP has some points which all libraries should consider when signing contracts. PLP has an NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) which covers patron privacy as well as the non-sharing of data, and addresses most of the items listed in the recommendations. We think it is a best practice for all libraries to use an NDA as a supplement to an agreement when patron privacy is involved, as well as having patron privacy policies. Gale Cengage also has several documents which were not referenced in the Grand Jury report which outline the protection of data when using Analytics on Demand.”
PLP member libraries are located in communities throughout Silicon Valley, and the consortium is “acutely aware of data privacy,” Frost added. “The Facebook sharing of data last year, along with the California Consumer Protection Act (which goes into effect in January 2020) made our libraries start to think about their own data privacy policies. In January we decided to apply for a [Library Services and Technology Act] grant to explore that nexus between library policies and the Consumer Protection Act.”
The grant was awarded, and PLP has used the funding to develop California-specific training workshops, as well as “a resource toolkit for libraries on privacy-related topics surrounding library data privacy and digital safety, including privacy policy and procedure best practices, tips for library staff for working with vendors in sharing patron data, and an overview of the data privacy lifecycle in libraries,” according to an announcement regarding the funding.
SCPL will be one of the library systems taking advantage of these new classes and other resources this fall, Nemitz said. SCPL also has established a page on its website with a list of every third party vendor the library uses, along with links to the privacy policies of those vendors, login methods, data retained by each vendor, and other information at santacruzpl.org/data_privacy.
“I want to own that, clearly, we did not address staff concerns well enough” with the library’s use of Analytics on Demand, Nemitz said. Going forward, SCPL is facing a challenge that is becoming increasingly common within the field—meeting the expectations of patrons who have become accustomed to the seamless conveniences enabled by big data, while adhering to policies that promise privacy.
The grand jury report “keeps us talking about really important issues in our field,” Nemitz said. “And I don’t think there are perfect answers right now…. But we as professionals need to care, and we need to help our patrons understand a lot more about data privacy.”

If You Want to Be a Rockstar Content Manager, You Must Have This Skill
Look, being a content manager is a lot of work. (I know this from personal experience.)
There are obvious day-to-day challenges of managing competing deadlines, balancing lots of different personalities, and having a job centered around the one thing a good number of people at your company would probably consider "homework" they don't want to do.
Still, a conversation I had during a recent episode of MarketHer with Angela and Kate made me realize something.
There actually is something more satisfying than hitting publish on something I've worked really, really hard on to produce -- empowering someone else to do the same with a piece of content or a project they're really, really proud of.
I want to make a lazy quip here about how surprising it is to feel that way because I'm a selfish only child, blah blah blah, but that kind of humor is a crutch I rely upon far too often and undermines the larger point I want to make here.
We've said before that two of the top qualities you should seek out in a content manager is that they (a) are likable and (b) know what makes people tick.
I don't disagree with that.
If you aren't likable, no one will want to work with you -- and they certainly won't give a damn about any deadlines you set for them. And if you don't understand what makes people tick, you won't be able to motivate or inspire anyone.
If, however, we were to distill that down further to the single quality I've noticed the top content managers I know possess, it's that they genuinely want to see those around them have a positive impact through their stories, and will go out of their way to empower them to do so at every turn.
A bit hokey and naïve? Maybe.
But if you were to ask me what gets me out of bed every morning, it's that. That moment when someone gets to the end of a big content project with me and says, "Wow, I really created this. And I am really proud of it."
And then sometimes, if I'm lucky, "When do we get to do that again?"
Not only do those moments give me the warm and fuzzies, I know that person has put a piece of content into the universe that's really going to have a bottom-line impact... and they'll continue to work hard to do so from that moment on.
If you want to be a remarkable content manager, this is the mental posture you need to adopt when you wake up every day to do your job. (And if you're hiring for one, this is what you need to look for.)
But I'll be the first to admit that this ingrained "content manager altruism" still takes work. You can have that natural drive to see others be successful that can't be taught and still fail to deliver in the ways that count.
That's because it's kind of like a muscle you need to work and strengthen over time with practice. Lots and lots of practice.
Here's how and when you practice.
#1: Editing & Giving Feedback
If you are the single point of contact through which all content drafts flow, you cannot be viewed as a royal in a castle from whom faceless decrees, accolades, and (most importantly) expressions of dissatisfaction are issued.
By no means am I suggesting you become an emotional hand-holder of the people whose work you edit, but rather taking the time to remember that to do your job well goes beyond your ability to wield your red pen -- literal or virtual.
For example, if someone impresses you with a draft, go out of your way to tell them that. And be specific.
"I really enjoyed this. You've got a great knack for structure."
Or...
"By the way, I just wanted to say I think this is really going to resonate with our audience. You did a great job of answering one of the most commonly asked questions we get."
Of course, you don't need to invite them out to lunch or make a big to-do out of these little exchanges. A simple email or Slack message can be quite powerful in these cases; especially since they can come back and revisit your kind words. The goal is that you want someone to feel valued -- as a contributor, generally, as well as for the quality of their work.
On the flip side of that equation, if someone gives you a draft that.... well, needs a lot of work, you need to go the extra mile to deliver that news. Particularly if it's the first time you've handled work from that individual.
If you see you're about to absolutely demolish a draft with edits and comments, you need to have a face-to-face chat with someone to walk them through what needs to happen. I would even let them guide that discussion by asking them how they felt about the draft they gave.
(Often, they'll say, "Honestly, not that great. I really struggled because of X, Y, and Z," which makes your life a heck of a lot easier.)
The goal of the conversation in these scenarios is not to simply take someone through the edits, line by line, as you would have given them via suggested changes and comments, but rather to have a dialogue where you make it clear that you're invested in helping them become successful.
Still, be honest in your feedback, but you need to create space for them to learn, while also making sure you're not creating a scenario where they feel like you're making them publicly walk the plank with you, as a penance for creating a sub-par draft.
There is also a third scenario in which I would recommend making the face-to-face (or, at the very least video call) effort -- when the draft is solid, but you either need to take out a personal story that someone clearly put a lot of effort into or you plan to restructure a large part of it.
Using the personal story angle as an example, I often coach folks who write for us to put themselves into an article by sharing experiences and going out of their way to use their conversational tone. Most of the time, it lands, but there are occasions where it doesn't.
That's true of anyone, though. There are times where I re-read drafts of my own, only to realize a great memory I was sure would work is the "odd man out" in my introduction, or wherever I happened to place it.)
So, when it doesn't work for someone else, I'll usually hop on a quick Zoom call to explain what isn't working about that section, but also to more broadly applaud how they put themselves out there and that they're moving in the right direction.
Because, were I to just strike that section or rework it to a point beyond recognition, they would see the final product and go, "Well, why did I even bother putting myself in there?"
That's the worst-case scenario that you never, ever want to create.
#2: Have an "Open Door Policy"
What form this takes for you will depend on your preferences, but you should clearly communicate -- both explicitly with regular reminders and through your approachability -- that you are always there as a resource to help people with their content questions, large and small.
Unlike the nuances of handling the certain cases in the editing process, this is a fairly straightforward recommendation of how to be that content manager rockstar.
Your people need to feel like they can access you, and that any questions they have will not be rejected or obviously considered silly or dumb.
Using myself as an example, I've made it clear that I am always available for specific questions or to help folks walk through vague ideas they need help crystallizing.
In fact, I'd say the latter is much more common, because as some people simply need a sounding board to get that quick mental outline for a topic where it needs to be -- or they need someone to ask a few clarifying questions to make sure they're pointed in the right direction before they get down to work.
You can make that a broad rule, you can create office hours, or whatever you think works best for you and your team. The bottom line is you need to create a culture where people instinctively feel as if you are there to help and, most of all, that you genuinely want to do so.
#3: Recognize the Quality of Work Being Produced
It's no secret that one of the ways to keep your people engaged is to help people see how their content is contributing to the larger whole of what you're doing with inbound marketing -- specifically, in terms of helping close deals, generating lots of views, etc.
But I want to take that one step further.
Yes, continue to do all those things -- recognizing deal-closing content, etc. -- but also occasionally weave in public recognition of someone who went above and beyond in the quality of their content.
Often I'll do this before someone even goes to publication.
For example, we have a Slack channel called #happy-thoughts, where people across IMPACT are given free reign to recognize fellow IMPACTers for great work, a milestone, being a team player, and so on.
I remember the first time I read Stephanie Baiocchi's draft for her guide to online community management, I was completely blown away -- were there still some edits that needed to be made? Surely. Did I have feedback on where she could take her work to the next level? Absolutely.
But she had surpassed all of my expectations on the first draft of an extensive beast of a content project, and so I told everyone:
As you can see, I was very specific about the "why" of it being so good -- the quality was outstanding and she was going to help us reach our goals.
Later on, I still made a big "to do" when her guide went live, but I wanted to make sure she felt her initial push was rewarded, because she worked hard and really delivered.
This is what you need to do for your people.
Not every time, of course -- no one feels special in an "everybody gets a trophy" situation. But whenever you get those genuine moments of, "Wow, they really, really crushed it," you should share that with others on your team.
#4: Don't Be a Pushover
This may sound contrary to the "Be their champion!" advice I've been giving you up to this point. But the reality is that someone will only consider you their champion if you push them to higher standards.
Be fair. Be honest. Be consistent.
And, most of all, don't diminish your standards of quality for the sake of making someone feel "empowered."
Your people will only feel like your affirmations matter when they feel like you thinking something is good is actually a big deal. That you're not just some fluffy-wuffy cheerleader who would be shaking your proverbial pom poms for just anyone.
Moreover, I'll say that sometimes the best moments where I do get to recognize someone for amazing work have been the result of conversations where I have to tell them first on a different occasion:
"I'm going to challenge you. Sure, this is passable, but you can do better than this."
Sometimes those moments involve me calling out obviously lazy writing or staying the standard is beyond where they're at, at that point in time. But I make it clear that I believe they can get there.
Finally, You Can't Fake It, but You Can Overdo It
Here's the thing -- if you take all of this advice to heart, but you're faking it, ultimately, when it comes to genuinely wanting your people to be content rockstars themselves, they're going to know.
That's why, when we tell people what to look for when hiring for this role, we tell them to be on the look out for specific people-focused soft skills that someone either has or they don't.
So, for those of you reading this, you either genuinely (as part of who you are as a human) have some part of you that wants to lift people up and see them just absolutely crush it on their own... or you don't.
There is no in-between.
On the flip side of that coin, I want to leave you with one important note of clarification. The ways in which you "practice" as I've outlined above are (a) based on my personal experience and observation, and (b) can quickly become an emotional drain if you think I'm recommending these practices for every single interaction you have.
For instance, most of the editing "transactions" you'll engage in around a single piece of content for someone will likely be fairly unremarkable and won't require setting aside time to talk with someone face-to-face about their work.
(Seriously, just think about the calendar collapse you would experience if you were to have some deep heart-to-heart meeting about every single piece of content getting published on your company's website. Just thinking about that reality for myself gives me anxiety.)
You won't be perfect every day, and that's OK. You won't always have the limitless time to help people as you may want to at first, and that's OK.
What really matters is that, as a content manager, you understand you are the leader of the content culture at your company. And if you lead with a mental posture that communicates, "You guys have no idea what kind of amazing stuff you're capable of creating, and I'm your champion in helping you get there," you'll get results in more ways than you thought possible.
And the people you work with will thank you for it.
