first: do no harm
(AO3)
Dr. Mensah’s attention zeroed in on me like a well-tuned surgery bot arm. “You have medical training.”
I was going to deny the hell out of that. I really was.
And then I said: “Not recently,” instead of no or even more accurately I frankly don’t think the company’s education modules count as training by your standards. (As far as I was concerned, the only thing worse than those modules was the one on breaking bad news, but what did I know. Maybe humans actually felt comforted by those tactics they described.) (No, I didn’t think that was likely, either.)
Which reminded me of a necessary addition. “The company won’t cover liabilities related to any non-security tasks you assign me to, if that’s what you’re intending.”
Mensah made a sound that was both grim and viciously annoyed at once, which I immediately saved for further analysis and replication. “Then we’ll just have to not make any mistakes, won’t we?”
I hadn’t exactly been thrilled with getting assigned to this mission. Not that mining installations were much of a walk in the park, but this was just asking to turn up memories that were better off buried (preferably forever) in my organic parts.
I don’t usually pay attention to mission briefs, as you may have noticed, and I wouldn’t have this time either except that my half-assed scan turned up the fact that the team weren’t science-doctors on a survey like I’d initially assumed, but medical-doctors. On a medical mission.
Of course they were.
(I wanted to say that someone had allocated me to this on purpose, but realistically speaking the company didn’t give enough of a shit, and the universe disliked me enough that this could totally be pure chance.)
Considering all that, the mission so far had been… much less worse than it could’ve been. Though the bar for that was admittedly very, very low. Possibly somewhere in the negatives.
Anyway. Up until the whole thing with Bharadwaj and Volescu getting almost-but-not-eaten, the task of making sure no one died had mostly been the clients’ job for once, which was a nice change since they were actually competent at it.
I still didn’t care enough to read their background info, but it was pretty clear just from observing that these doctors had experience with working in less-than-great conditions, even if Ratthi did sometimes sigh wistfully about equipment they couldn’t have in field hospitals. It meant that my job had pretty much amounted to patrolling, lurking visibly around the supplies storage in case anyone got ideas about that, and helping to fetch various medical items when I happened to be there and it wasn’t Gurathin asking.
It wasn’t terrible. I’d even got some media-watching time in.
(There might have been the vague thought that things could’ve gone much better if I’d been deployed with a team like this instead of Corporation Rim fuckery that literally bled payment from patients, but part of the reason medical-use constructs had been developed in the first place was so that hospitals could draw up forty-hour shifts and other assorted fun without worrying about doctor and surgeon unions, which told you everything you needed to know about our existence.
Also, the thought was inherently depressing and I already had enough of that in my head, thank you very much.)
The contract was more than halfway through. All I had needed to do to avoid awkward questions was continue making sure no one noticed that I was weirdly well-versed in all this, which wasn’t difficult since they only seemed to have theoretical knowledge about SecUnits at best.
Then the fauna happened, and poof went my cover.
Now all of PresAux knew I was – whatever the hell you called a catastrophically failed MedUnit who got turned loose onto security, because at least if I screwed up here the press wouldn’t be as bad. And that wasn’t even getting into the hacked governor module.
Even constructs didn’t have a term for all that.
Of course, none of that stopped this from being a Very Bad Idea. Even if apparently no one except Gurathin (ugh) seemed to agree.
“I’m a SecUnit, Dr. Mensah. I scare people. Patients are harder to assess when they’re running away.” I thought basic logistics might work here.
“You had better bedside manner with Bharadwaj and Volescu than many doctors I’ve seen. Human ones, might I add, and not actively injured themselves at the time.” Mensah’s tone was brisk as her pace – which wasn’t difficult to keep up with either, given my vertical advantage, but impressive nonetheless. “And no one wants to be around Pin-Lee when she’s holding a scalpel. That’s what the sedation is for.”
It’s because SecUnit hasn’t seen her in court yet. Trust me, it’s much scarier, Ratthi chimed in over the feed, with the text signifier for “amusement” but not “joke”.
Pin-Lee just smiled.
It was terrifying. I wasn’t even looking directly at her.
“I don’t have a valid license.” That’d been a part of the legal fallout from the disaster on RaviHyral, though no one had actually bothered with adding malpractice charges or barring me from ever doing medicine again. (Just another side effect of being considered as equipment – I doubted the company would’ve even secured licenses for constructs if not for their paranoia about covering their asses on all fronts.)
But it was a last resort argument, and I knew it.
Mensah knew it, too. “There’s special dispensations for that, especially under the current circumstances, as long as a fully-licensed doctor is in the vicinity at all times. It’s not like any of us can actually get out of each other’s hair in this base anyway.”
Mensah had stopped in a less-chaotic corner and turned to me, not that she could see anything behind the faceplate. I fixed my gaze a generous distance to the left and let my drones do the looking.
“I’m not going to make you agree. You perform a valuable function as our security – far more than I had initially expected, to be honest, and we would all be grateful if you kept doing that. But with Bharadwaj down for the count and Volescu still recovering, we could do with the help.” Her expression was still steady as ever, even though she probably knew better than I did the risks of continuing to operate shorthanded like this. “It’s your decision, SecUnit.”
Right, just the very thing I didn’t need to hear.
I kept most of my sigh internal. “Triage and first-aid only, between patrols. No procedures, and I won’t be responsible if any patients freak out.”
Mensah nodded. “Of course. Gurathin’s on receiving duty today, how about you work out a roster with him?”
I knew it. This was a bad idea.
–––––
You’d be my guardian.
Yes. The education opportunities – most of us were trained on Preservation, if you’re interested in learning and getting your license properly this time. Or not. You can do anything you want.
–––––
ART barged its way into my feed. You’re exhibiting a mildly elevated temperature and respiration rate. Though it could of course merely be a sign of inferior processors rather than emotional distress.
Do you talk to your clients like that?
Do you? ART retorted right back, but obligingly brought up the documentation for its MedSystem before I finished the query for it.
I ignored ART’s attention (with some difficulty) as I flicked quickly through the top few files, taking in the glaring disparities from my existing data. The notable lack of suggesting costly procedures that no-one actually needed, for starters. I’m assuming some of these are your improvements on standard procedure?
I am the cutting edge of medical research, ART proclaimed. You couldn’t accuse it of humility if you tried.
I still wasn’t sure what I wanted, and I still didn’t want anyone to decide it for me. But moving towards the one thing I did want (at least in the short term) had ended up with me running into what was very possibly the most advanced and opinionated diagnosis-treatment AI currently in existence, because that was just the kind of luck I had.
I didn’t have a medium-duty surgical suite in my arms anymore, since that was the entire point of modular Unit construction, but neither did Mensah.
And I didn’t think I wanted to stop doing security, anyway, since it turned out I might not be completely terrible at it; having actual medical knowledge that was MedSystem-malfunction-proof couldn’t hurt.
Plus, overwriting those shitty education modules seemed like a pretty great fuck-you to the company. I was always interested in that.
I tagged some of the more emergency-related files, then added a bunch of the weirder injuries I’d seen on contracts, and prodded ART. Tell me about these?

Huntressess Winter (6/?)
What happens when a Hunter meets the Avengers because a summon gone wrong?
AN: Here is the next part. Have fun reading.
Wordcount: around 3700
Warning: description of torture! Be warned.
Huntresses Winter Masterlist
Part 5
„So, what do you say, soldier? Wanna spar?” You grinned, “I promise I won´t go hard on you. Unless you want me to.”
He just wanted to answer you, when an alarm goes off and you immediately were on high alert and grabbed where usually your angle blade was hidden.
Oh yeah, fuck!
“Hydra is attacking. They were able to breach through the northern perimeter.”
The AI informed and hectic broke lose.
“You want me to help, or don´t you trust me enough?” You asked running next to the two.
“You will wait in there. FRIDAY, make sure she doesn´t get out. Sorry (y/n) but we can´t risk it.” Natasha Romanov answered you motioning at your room you were about to pass.
“Alright, but if you need help. Shout for me.” You answered and entered your room.
“I am sorry Ms Winchester, but I am sure the situation will soon be under control.”
“Yeah don´t worry.” You breathed.
I know this is needed, but I really don´t like if I don´t know what is going on and help.
You walked around in the room, looking for anything you could use as a weapon should one of the attackers decide to come after you, but there was none.
Need to take their weapons then. Hope they didn´t succeed in summoning another demon.
“Miss Winchester. I fear someone was able to overwrite my protocols and will soon enter the room. I suggest to get ready to fight.”
Hearing that, your inner animal awoke and you felt your senses and reflexes sharpen.
Strange how it always helps me when I need to fight or am in danger but otherwise leaves me alone.
“Where will they enter from?”
“The door.”
“Thanks for the heads up FRIDAY.”
Not a second later the door opened and a soldier entered the room, his eyes immediately scanning for you, but you had moved right next to the door, where you waited in the shadows for him to step inside.
Your nose caught the distinct smell of blood and dead.
Vampire. Shit, I need something to decapitate it.
The bloodsucker sniffed the air to catch your scent and you knew the time to surprise it was almost over.
You took in his built. He had the usual look of an soldier, with his broad shoulders and height. A big knife was secured at her waist, as well as an assault rifle that hung over his shoulders.
I need to get my hands on the knife. That’s the only sharp thing I can use to behead him.
But before you could reach for it, did the bloodsucker turn around and the two of you began to fight.
He tried to grab and secure you, not wanting to hurt you too much and you knew he was here to bring you back.
Not going to happen
With a quick move and your pick pocket training, you were able to get a hold on the knife. Anger filled the eyes of the bloodsucker, anger that he wasn´t able to get you under his control, regardless the supernatural strength and speed he had. Time after time did you slip out of his grab, every time leaving cuts and marks behind.
Need to get closer to his throat. Just one good cut- come on (y/n) you can do it!
“Give up little girl, you can´t run from me.” He laughed.
“Who said I want to run? I will cut of your head and shove it up your ass.” You growled and couldn’t supress a smile when his own blade cut through the muscles of his neck.
“Little girl or not, I am a hunter and you and your friends are the prey. FRIDAY, are there more coming?”
“No, but Mr Rogers and the others have trouble to fight of their attackers.”
“Inform them to behead them or use silver to slow them down. I am on my way- if you allow me that is.”
“They are informed. I can guide you towards them, just follow the lights in the floor.”
“On my way.” You answered and grabbed the head and the weapons of the dead vampire. You were in full hunter mode; your senses, fingernails and canines sharpened.
“Can you analyse the air for sulphur?”
“Analysation complete. No Sulphur found.”
“At least you don´t have a demon in your compound.” You told the AI. “Can you give me a description of the attackers?”
“Claws and sharp teeth. Animalistic movements. Male. Mid thirties.”
Sharp teeth, claws- Maybe a werewolf?
“Tell them to make sure they don´t get bitten, anybody that isn´t armoured has to keep away! I believe it is a werewolf.” You stated, now hearing the tumult up front.
Turning around the corner, you assessed the situation at hand. The common area was a mess, chairs and tables were laying everywhere in pieces and Stark (now wearing his metal armour) and Bucky were fighting the attacker, apparently they had heard your warning. Realizing the monster was slightly better at the moment, you aimed the vampires head at him and threw. It landed right in front of the werewolf´s feet and he lost his footing when he stepped on it, what gave the soldier enough time to get the attacker under control. His metal arm sneaked around the wolf´s neck, bringing it to the floor.
Quick, Stark was able to put some kind of muzzle around his face and his arms into restrains.
“Get him into the chamber. I want to know what is going on as soon as possible.” The Captain declared, and Bucky nodded in understanding, the wolf was dragged over the floor towards a you unknown area of the house.
“Who´s head is that?” Natasha Romanov asked, still a bit out of breath.
“The head belongs to the man that was able to hack into my systems and enter Ms Winchester´s room.”
“He was a vampire. Best way to kill them is beheading them.” You stated, lifting the head (that now had a little dent in it) back up. “Ugly bastard.”
“If that´s a vampire, where are his fangs?” Stark asked smartly, and you sighted.
“here.” You answered, pushing the second pair of teeth out of their hiding place. “Believe me, you don´t want to get bitten by it. It damn well hurts like a bitch. Good thing is that you have to drink their blood as well to become a bloodsucker otherwise I would have been doomed a few times already.”
The last time was only as loud as a breath, but the raised eyebrow of the Captain told you he had heard you.
“Later Cap. For now, I need to figure out if the man in your custody really is what I think he is.”
“And that would be?”
“A werewolf Mr Stark, a werewolf. You don´t happen to have a silver dagger lying around here, do you?”
“But it is not full moon.” Banner stated confused.
“He is a higher one, maximum fourth generation after the alpha. That way he is still under control of his actions. That makes it even easier to deal with him. We don´t have to kill someone that had no idea he or she was killing and eating other people.” You shrugged.
“Tony, I think we should her allow to speak with the man. If she is right with her assumption, neither of us knows how to handle that.” Wanda piped up.
“I think that as well.” Bucky said, sending you a little approving look.
“Fine.” Stark sighted. “But I am not responsible for anything that might happen.”
“One thing though, I want to figure out a few other things and that might get against your believes how I will get the answers.”
“Thinks like what?”
“The Huntersociety, who are the bosses and so on. Nothing too major. But I believe you will find that pretty interesting as well. I mean, you have a whole new parallel world you have to think about now.”
“How do you want to get the answers?” Steve asked.
“Torture, if nothing else helps. And before you spat that is inhumane- he isn´t a human anymore-maybe never was. His wounds will heal fast.” You assure the others, who send you disbelieving looks.
Typical.
“I promise I will keep it to the minimum.” You said, offering the Captain your little finger for a pinkie promise.
You somehow knew, he was the one that would give you the most trouble.
“What are you going  to do with the head?”
“Maybe a candleholder? Don´t you think?” You smirked, “That was a joke. I will use it to get answers and then burn the whole body in your backyard- or do you have something I can use as a crematorium?”
“We have a big oven to burn old experiments and folders.” Dr Banner stated a bit unsure.
“That´s enough. I can cut it into little pieces after all.”
Half of the others looked at you like you were a sick serial killer, only the Black Widow and the Winter Soldier looked like they knew what you were speaking about.
Maybe that’s why they call her Black Widow and Bucky has the eyes of someone that killed a lot of people- that could come in handy, if we have to face other monsters. Regardless that they are fighters, they are all sweet summer children.
“Silver dagger you say? I may have some silverware lying around and then there are your weapons.” Tony mused, sending you a questioning eye.
“As long that there is a knife in there. I will need to use my knuckledusters.” You shrugged, Hunters are masters of improvising after all.
Ten minutes later, you stood in front of a glass door knuckledusters and head in your hand.
“We are right outside if you need our help.” Bucky assured you and you thought you heard worry in his voice.
“Sure thing. But wait for my sign, I may have to trick him into something.” You stated and put on your stare that kills demons, at least that´s how your brothers and Crowley called it.
Your face is expressionless then and your eyes seem to burn with internal fire then, though you haven´t seen that till today. Your heartbeat and breathing slowed and your canines sharpened a bit.
Pushing the door open, the werewolf´s attention was on you at once, a dangerous smirk appeared on his face and you knew he thought you to be an unknowing human being.
“Cut your smirk of your face, you can´t scare me. I am a hunter and you are nothing compared to my usual pray.” You stated without emotion, almost bored. To underline that statement, you threw the head of his companion onto his lap, so it dead eyes looked upwards.
“Your friend did the mistake to underestimate me. Don´t make the same mistake.”
“He wasn´t my friend, girl.” The werewolf grinned.
I hate to be called a ´girl´.
Without any emotion, you pulled back and slammed one of your knuckleduster covered fists into his face and blood immediately splattered around.
“Don´t call me ´girl´. Now I have a few questions and you will answer. First of all. Why were you here?”
“We were bored and hungry, and this compound smelled soooo tasty.” He laughed, bearing his fangs.
“Don´t lie to me. I know you were send. Tell me why and I might won´t hurt you too much. But maybe you want to answer other questions first. So tell me, why is a werewolf and a vampire working for humans? Don´t you have any dignity? You are pathetic.”, you laughed, and the werewolf send a glare at you.
“You will answer my questions. I am curious though, are you born a wolf or are you made into one? You know what? I will find out myself.”
“Get me free and I will happily show you.”
“Nope, I prefer the safe method. Do you know what this is? This is an Angels blade and it is very sharp, you might want to sit still while I cut off your clothes. We don´t want you to lose any limbs do we?”
With precise cuts, you eliminated the military clothing of the wolf and he know sat in only his underwear in front of you.
“Lets see if I can find a bite. Keep your teeth by yourself, I like my skin intact and believe me: you don´t want me to bite back.” You smirked, slowly walking around him; all the while dragging the tip of your blade over his skin, leaving a small red mark.
When it dragged over one of his nipples he hissed in pain and you grinned as an answer.
“Oh, did I hurt you? Come one give me answers and you won´t need to suffer. I promise.” You breathed into his ear. Seeing his opportunity, he snapped his head around and tried to get a chunk out of your face, but your reflexes saved you and he was greeted by a blade at his throat and a grin on your face.
“Nuh uh. Forget it. I am not on your menu today. Tell me, what other supernatural beings work for Hydra? By the way has no one ever told them a hydra is a serpent and not an octopus? You should know that. Amateurs.”
“We don´t work for them.” He spat, salvia of his hitting your face.
“oi, don´t spit at me!” You growled, punching him in the gut where immediately marks and blood appear. “Fine- what other creatures are working WITH hydra. Demons, Skinchanger, others ?”
“And what if I don´t answer? You won´t hurt me, you are with the AVENGERS they are the good guys after all.” He laughed, and you turned around, a deadly glimmer in your eyes.
Have it your way then.
“You know. Your bosses, or comrades, summoned me from another reality, when they wanted to get a demon. I am not good, and I am not one of them, so believe me: you have no idea what I am going to do to get my answers. You see. My goal is to get back into my world, to my family, my monsters and to know why I am here and what that thing sealed inside of me is.” You stated, while slowly getting undressed, your scars and ink evident on your skin.
“Do you want to seduce me?”
“No. I just don´t like blood on my clothes. You know, I hate the feeling of soaked clothes clinging to my skin and when it get´s dry- Uargh.” You stated, with a sadistic smile on your face, your canines glittering in the corners of your mouth. Not a second later, you embedded the angel blade in his arm until the hilt hit his skin.
Blood splattered and flew everywhere. A pained gurgle escaped his lips and his eyes were widened in shock.
“You bitch!”
“Wrong answer.” You sighted and turned the blade, vibration was what you felt when it scraped alongside the two lower arm bones.
“So? Still don´t want to talk?”  You asked again and your heightened senses caught the sound of hectic movements and hushed voices behind the wall of glass.
Sorry. I tried.
A puddle of blood gathered on the floor, and you grabbed a silver spoon out of your disregarded trousers on the floor.
“We don´t want you to heal, do we? Where would be the fun?” You breathed, grating some of the spoon into the wound.
“ARGH!”
“I have ALL the time to go on. And to do other things to you. Damn you should have switched places with your dead FRIEND. So, what do you think? You answer my questions and you will join him in purgatory. Come on, it is obvious you are a born werewolf and that you were tortured before. Don´t deny it, I can see your scars. They conditioned you to work for them, am I right?”
Silence.
But you knew you were right, his whole composure changed, and you caught a whiff of fear.
“Who do they have under their control? Tell me-“
“A few bloodsuckers and werewolves. No skinchangers or demons. No ghosts, no that’s not true, rumours have it that they have the ghost of some World War two general. Other rumours say Hydra have found a book that describes how to summon strong demons. One of them the mother of hounds. I am glad they didn´t succeed. I may be a monster, but them heaving an army of hellhounds, that’s not good for either side. I may be born a monster, but them- they are the REAL monsters! You know a lot, Hunter. Maybe you can stop them before they get the hell under their control as well. My father fled from Germany during World war two, I tell you this things for him. And if you meet a demon, ask him were they keep the bastard with the stupid moustache and kill him again. I know an angel blade can kill demons for good.” The wolf told you, his voice sincere and full of hate for the organization he had attacked for.
“My pleasure, but before that: I have some holy water prepared till then. His existence will end in suffering.” You promised with a growl.
“You-”, the man took a whiff of air, “you smell like one of those hellhound things, did you encounter one of them a short while ago? What I told you is all I know. They don´t let us see where the base is they keep us in, but it is cold there and it smells like ice and mountain. We are around one hundred there. Now that is all what I know. Get it over with. And should you ever come down to purgatory, I hope you kept your promise. Believe me down there WE are the hunters and you will be the prey.”
Without another second you embedded the blade into his heart, killing him instantly. Your eyes locked with his and you saw the life leave his body.
Pulling out the blade, blood splattered onto your face and body, before you returned towards the door.
Bucky was already waiting there for you, a strange expression on his face, but you couldn´t bother to think about it; your thoughts were spinning around what the wolf had said.
They want to summon the mother of hounds, and then he tells me I smell like hellhound. He is not the first one to tell me that as well. Crowley mentioned Juliet and other hounds of his like my smell and me- could it be. Could that be the thing sealed inside of me? The Mother of hounds? I need to check that. But first, I need to do research. Wasn´t there a spell or potion to meet and talk to your inner self- maybe I can-
“(y/n). I thought you said you want to do it as bloodless as possible.” Rogers scolded, disrupting your way of thought.
“I did. I could have cut off his arm. Starting at the tip of his fingers, then his wrist then split the arm between ulna and radius. Then dislocate the elbow, only to split the arm from the shoulder. That’s what I am understanding under the description ´bloody´.” You stated with a bit annoyed tone.
Looking him in the eyes, you thought you saw a light shade of green around the tip of his nose.
“Sorry Mr Rogers. My brothers and I usually don´t hold back with them. But don´t get me wrong, there are a few monsters that try to live humanly, some that only feast on animals. Those we let go. So don´t think I am a monster, but sometimes you must become a monster to defeat an even bigger one.”
You stated and you looked into Bucky´s eyes. “Do you still think you are a monster? You are a puppy compared to some things we came across and even compared to things we did. The description I just gave your friend, that was what I did to a vampire that loved to feast on children, torture them in the meantime, together with his nest. We needed to stop them, like you can believe. They had another child under their control and he knew where the hiding spot was. Only his torso and head was left, when he finally told us what we wanted to know. The blood was everywhere.”
The last part was only a breath.
“We came just at the right moment, and a friend of us – an angel- was able to change her memories. She believed that she was in a cruel car accident. But the scars will never leave.”
“Giirl. Remember me to never get on your bad side.”, Black Widow said, clapping on your shoulder in a friendly manner, “And I thought the things they taught us in the Red Room were disgusting and cruel. For how long are you doing all of this?”
“I started hunting when I was born you can say. My father and half-brothers got me after my mother was killed by a demon shortly after I was born. One of the first things I learned was how to kill the monster that was hiding under my motel bed- it was silver bullet to the head by the way. I think I was six then. Well enough of that. I need to do some research, but before that I need to get the blood of my skin. It is getting dry and sticky. Or is there anything I need to answer right here and now?”
“No. But hurry up. There a lot questions you have to answer now.” Stark said and you saw the gears move in his brain.
“I will come with you.” Bucky stated from behind you.
“Hope to see me naked?” You winked.
“- No. I will take care of the body-“ he answered with a frown, but you knew there was something else he wanted to say.
“Sure. Come on then.” You turned around and walked towards your room, the Winter Soldier at your heals.
