there are currently some efforts in my work group to analyze experiment data using machine learning, and the expert wanted to present his first attempts today. some 10 minutes in the scientists started arguing so much about whether or not the first practice dataset (made by one of them) accurately represents the experiment data that the expert barely managed to finish the presentation.

Here on my midnight's thoughts. I think one of your posts talked - maybe I'm remembering poorly-how Ochako puts her feelings on the hold for so long...could mean she doesn't like him anymore.

Hori is the only writer I can think screw up the main ship of his story- Naruto is another topic- and it hits me...

Could be this a toxic mentality?

"Heroes cant love, they need to work. I need to be the best hero for my parents" to sum up what Ochako could be thinking.

I mean, we dont see heroes dating. Yes, there's a rumou, in the story, how Mt. Lady and Kamui are dating ...but it was solve pretty quick.

But Ochako still feels the need to hide her feelings. Why?

There's nothing, as far we know, preventing a hero to have a love life and a career. Rock Lock is married...

Actually, think of Fairy Tales, a manga who I have a problem with the fanservices- all the ladies have tight clothes or bikinis- but here the thing the ladies are still cable and bad ass and ...want romance(some even get the romance they wanted) bc a heroine wanting a bf doesn't make her less of hero.

But with Ochako is the opposite. And I think is odd. I tend to chuckle with Hori's bad writting and Hori having a bias towards Izu...but even if is not that...we can certainly say we dont know Ochako well enough to say if she is the type to hide her feelings or if is just about her crush on Izu.

There's two questions here: is Ochako right in saying she can't do both at once, and is that attitude healthy?

Well, from what we've seen (which is very little), UA students seem to have a lot of free time; barring the summer training camp and the like, they certainly seem to do stuff, in a way that implies free time. Moreover, you need to remember that this isn't, like, most magical school shonen settings, where they're all hellholes training students to fight against doom via the 'insert enemy here'. UA is apparently just... a school where some of the classes are spent basiclly trying to murder your classmates (*notes to self to do that UA rant at some point*), and you'd probably have most of the spare time you'd normally have in high school, I guess.

Beyond that, there's the fact that heroes again, aren't... Batman, or Superman; these aren't people who are giving up their lives so they can save people, this is a job. There's a lot of, for lack of a better word, 'fair weather heroes' who apparently quit amass Post War, with the sub text of 'We didn't sign up for this!'. If heroic life was that harsh, you'd expect them to have done that earlier.

Also, I'm going to point out that, like so many other things in MHA, we don't see a lot of hero's lives beyond them heroing. We don't know what they do with their free time, or how much they have. There are heroic families, though; the Iidas and the Todokoris have heroes who are married and have children, and while they're both rich and wildly successful, no one really says that's unusual. There's every indication that they can have a family and all the things that come with that; a partner, a home... though romance, or time spent in the home, isn't exactly guaranteed. With how the commision based payment system is set up, your free time probably is decided by how ambitious you are and how much you need money.

So, on that logic, yeah, I'd say Ochako was wrong in that she didn't have the time to do it, though I don't really blame her for being wrong, either: she's a kid. She's a first year, going into the mysticism of heroism as a newbie. Why would she know better? It's shown several times that UA gives a whiplash between harsh training and ordinary school life, and the students are often surprised by how normal things can be.

Is the attitude of 'I can't afford to have romance so I can be a hero' wrong?

In the way I phrased it, it's wrong by the logic of the setting, because, well, you can. Unless your love is going to turn you into the memetic 'ideal Japanese housewife', who lives only for their loved one, then yeah, that'd get in the way. But, you know, that's not how it works for most people, so we can ignore that.

Let me rephrase, though, because there's a core concept to this question: Is it ideal that you're putting your own desires aside for the sake of getting a good job? No. Is it common? Yes.

The thing is you need to think about Ochako and the setting itself: Ochako isn't Batman turning away a love interest because of her dark secrets and self destructive tendencies; heroism is a job. It is a job, a decently paying one if you're any good at it, and Ochako is poor. Peel away the label of 'hero' and suddenly things become clear.

This is something that isn't about her, is the thing, it's about society. Ochako is basiclly the archetype of a poor kid trying to get into sports to escape poverty, with a thin coat of heroism painted over it. And it's bad that she has to do that, to think about that, but it isn't a heroism specific problem, and I can't really criticize her for wanting to leverage her skills to better her situation.

When you look at it that way, maybe she's just super serious in the beginning about succeeding, passing with good grades and some inroads into the industry, getting a decent job and securing her family's future, before allowing herself to think about, well, herself.

It's one of the things I regret about her character, because she could have been this great vehicle to explore outside of UA or hero fights, about the grey realities of being a hero for pay and how it isn't actually always a bad thing and so on, and she just got abandoned part way through.

Actually Meghan had rather easy start as everyone loved harry and was excited for him. You may not remember treatment Kate got when she started dating William - she was hounded by paparazzi, mocked on billboards, insulted. It may not seem that documented because it happened when social media wqsnt that popular but it happened. You still may find paparazzi pictures of kate and meghan and see they difference of treatment (safe distance for meghan, almost no place for kate for walking) What more Meghan was grown up women, Kate was way younger- different places in life. I had sympathy for Meghan but it quickly vanished once they both mocked Dianas death claiming they were in car chase in new yoork… dont forget that she was once actress so she dealt with pr specialist and all, so she know exactly what to do to gain ppl sympathy. I wont be surprised if her claiming that she had sucidal thoughts was just a way to gain sympathy(we both know that then you can’t be criticised). If they could leave family behind they cleary could seek help for her if this really took place. If harry didnt help her then sorry she has weak husband and he is root of her problems. Plus she and harry are everywhere with cameras. They are only relevant with connection to royal family. If someone allegedly abuse you would you want to live your life connected to them? Use abuser tittles? Why they use titles alll the time? They want all privileges but they don’t want to work they way royal family do, they want to be on the spotlight.

recently been looking into poppy playtime (it’s…. ok) and its like. theres some good concepts in here and the designs are pretty good but i feel like the lore falls apart immediately if you look too closely at it and maybe im missing something since i havent actually played it (i watched markiplier play it and then dug through the internet for the rest of the information until i lost interest) but ok

i like the biological elements to the monsters - love something bleeding when it Should Not Have Blood. i really dont think you can fit that many organs in a little dinosaur toy though. the big ones sure but that one guy who got put in a toy size dinosaur? and why did they just leave him in with the other experiments if he was a staff person who Agreed to this

anyway my main question is What Is The Motive Here

- if they’re seeking immortality, that just. feels like a really bizarre plot for a toy company? unless the idea is that the toy company was a front for the real operation all along but if you’re really trying to make bodies for humans to inhabit why not focus on, y’know, humanoid things, rather than whatever the hell huggy wuggy is. nobody wants to be that guy forever. and the monster toys still can die anyway, so

which brings me to my major question of WHY is there a commercial for poppy? it seems like the poppy we find in the case is The Only poppy, she’s the only experiment that worked properly, she’s the ideal “toy that can talk to you like a person! (because she is one)” but they’ve never been able to replicate that success - how were they able to sell these dolls with the promise of the Real Girl Intelligence if they only had one (which clearly wasn’t sold since she’s still there)? or did they film the commercial after their success intending to make more dolls and never released it when things went wrong? poppy’s on a lot of the advertisements and stuff so she seems to be a recognized character in the brand. did they at one time manage to recreate her and just sold a bunch of little orphan girls trapped in dolls? is that what I’m supposed to be taking from this?

uhhhhhh so i guess we start with picking a character u really Vibe with tm? I KNOW THIS SOUNDS LIKE COMMON SENSE BUT LIKE ive been considering making a genshin ask blog for a while now but i never really got to it cos i couldnt really decide on a character (plus the fact that their outfits are. so intricate. is also a hmm since i try to follow details to a t) (at first i wanted to do zhongli, but i feel like to be able to muse him well u need to know the lore super super well, which i dont n im too lazy to research on that aha. n u know how much i respect characterizations, especially for such a complex character like him. i also considered xiangling for a period of time mostly for guoba but also like i have 2+1 blogs here n having one more might not be a very good idea aha) (as for aesop he was my Hyperfixation Character tm also cos i looked at his kit n went Yep i could work with this. probably)

so assuming ur not a dumbass like me n u kinda know who u wanna pick, id actually say to snoop around here for other ask blogs n kinda get a feel of the... scene? is that the word? or like u know, other blogs that u can potentially vibe with. ive run a couple of ask blogs before this current one (both that have died for different reasons) n from my experience interacting with other blogs (if theyre okay with it, i think most should be) is pretty fun. it also kinda helps get ur blog around to other ppl on other blogs so they can go Oh whats this cool shit n check u out, n its also a reason why we kinda reblog promo posts for other blogs (also cos we’re always excited when someone new comes on, its really the more the merrier. we see all :eyes:). interacting with other blogs is also an option when ur inbox is looking real roomy too

i gotta say tho. dont expect ur blog to take off immediately (especially for smaller fandoms like idv, tvbh i didnt think my blog would even get half this far when i started cos of how non existent idv tumblr seemed to be) n ur inbox will probably be looking pretty empty a lot of the time (or at least filled with some that u havent quite thought of how to reply to yet aha) (but also like empty inboxes happen pretty often, im sure most of us here have experienced this problem)

in the case of the first ask blog i ever started, it never really took off at all. ngl it was kind of demoralizing n depressing but to be fair i had picked one of the more obscure characters in the series, so obscure that many ppl in the fandom would have never heard of this character before. if u wanted to know, i took a character that only appeared in the 2nd musical of the series, who also made a very brief cameo in the manga to acknowledge his existence within that universe. thats how obscure my character was, but i went with him purely because he was my favourite character. i will say though i did enjoy it while it lasted n i learnt a lot from the experience, n i think thats whats important really.

i guess this kinda leads on (not really but let me digress) to the whole uhhhh thing where if u choose a more popular character, u get more attention. which is fine i guess? if u really vibe with the character, i mean theyre popular for a reason. n choosing a more popular fandom (like genshin) would objectively also get u more viewers n numbers. but like honestly i believe that ask blogs are meant for u to have fun with, n like trying to get popular gets tiring pretty fast (this shouldnt be like a main goal, but u know sometimes u subconsciously also want that gucci follower count n bomb ass notes or something. i used to be guilty of this until i realized it isnt worth it) especially if ur not enjoying yourself in the process. (case in point: my previous fandom was considerably larger n my blog got about 700 followers within a year or so, but it got very tiring n stressful to maintain after my interest in it died, n no one was really interacting with the blog even though i tried which kinda made it even more depressing despite the so called success n popularity of the blog)

anyway on a less serious note, theres a lot of fun stuff u can do with the ask blog, like some ask blogs have really fancy tags that i really like n try to do but also like not really HAHAHAHA. i kinda just channel what i want to see in an ask blog into my own ask blogs (good art is one, i try very hard for it to be good :,DD another is characterization, n others is just extra miscellaneous arts n stuffs like au ideas or memes. these are also somethings u could work on during ask box downtimes perhaps)

uhhh another side thing is like a posting schedule i guess? like ppl would be more likely to interact (i think) if ur blog is relatively active, n this is usually determined by the last post u made (i think XD). but like generally for blog maintenence id say try to kinda find a frequency that ur comfortable with?? cos i know my once a day posting is kinda insane if i wasnt so hyperfixated on all of this n fight the urge to dump all ur replies when u finish them XD (though ive seen some blogs do that n they do it pretty frequently so its pretty nice to know once u see their post u can spend some time going through the latest batch of posts XD) the queue function is pretty useful here even though i truthfully have never really used it, i kinda just post from my drafts really but it also helps to space out ur content to seem somewhat active especially when u dont have the time to be working on replies sometimes. i hope u know what im trying to say here aha

Like, Harry just from first impression I can definitely see as being a Rogue of Breath, it’s fitting so far

Tavros then could either be a Maid of Hope or a Page of Life, tho I’m HEAVY leaning towards Maid of Hope seeing as that progression would be “relying on others at first for their hope, then learning to create hope for themselves” versus Page of Life being someone incompetently acting out confidence and authority until they gain a truer understanding of it and become rulers in their own right

Vrissy I think genetically is actually meant to be like, Vriska’s true descendant? I think? Like how Aranea was to Vriska, they have that looking up to the other and modeling after their behaviors as a role model dynamic going on, so in all likelihood Vrissy is at least a Light player, but I guess in the troll’s case the class is more up to the individual in question, but Vrissy will no doubt be trying to act out her own Class through seeing the comparisons in Vriska’s Behaviour, same as Vriska Molded her image of Her Ancestor as Thief-like growing up despite Aranea actually being a Sylph, so we may get more clues to Vrissy’s class by seeing how Vrissy idolizes and embellishes what traits she sees in Vriska, so far, she seems to be focusing on how Vriska kills bad people and is straight to the point about it, so nothing really yet. Vrissy seems to be really acting confident around Vriska, but not sure if that’s because she doesn’t really think Vriska is all that cool, or she does and is trying to impress her (The latter being very Vriska behaviour lol)

“ VRISKA: If you want to keep Hanging Out, I mean. Which I assume you Do. “ comes to mind, so definitely think this is Vrissy’s behavioural attempt at wanting in with the Cool People. Try to clarify that she is wanted from the people she values without coming off as wanting to want it haha

Overall she is definitely quite confident and is very open with what she knows and what she doesn’t, suggesting perhaps a Page-y behaviour? we’ll see

Yeah it is pretty comfortable behavior for a Maid class that isn’t confident to be more confident being led by someone, then again that is also pretty normal behavior for someone who has been abused like Tavros has been.

Hmmm, We get into the nitty gritty of what trauma might do to a person’s classpect as well, assuming the system is more nurture based than predestined nature based. I still lean towards it being predestined nature based, you were always going to be who you ended up being etc Homestuck is just like that after all where Nurture is valued and is absolutely an influence, but with Nature being tied up in timelines and predestination, its just sort of already taking Nurture into account when it’s basing on Nature, Nurture is just inherently a part of Nature already and etc

it kinda bugs me how they cant make httyd3 longer just so they can emphasize the story in a deeper meaning, like your post abt it being disproportionate. httyd3 had a LOT more plot than httyd2 and we can already see how it has to cramp so much and why that makes D2's pace felt pretty fast. the structure of the story is actually well planned.. perfect, to be exact! but the execution like putting pauses, necessary humor, longer dialogue, is whats needed to make it um, understandable? im not sure..

this isnt meant to judge the movie as bad though! but its a question ive been asking why they cant do it longer, for that sake. is it the budget? was Dean really certain the script is okay? or is it meant to be like this so people can interpret the movie their way? It’s an interesting conversation for sure! I believe that THW doesn’t have to be longer to be extremely successful in the ideas it needs to convey! The core ideas being:

Toothless cannot be a wild dragon and strong alpha leader with humans. Other dragons probably deserve the respect of needing wild dragon needs, too.

Humans like Grimmel are extremely dangerous to dragons and will continue to arise, so dragons need to go to an area separate from humans to live in optimal peace.

Hiccup and Toothless’ powerful friendship will separate (insofar as physical location) due to the first two points

I know you’re not the only person I’ve talked to who wanted a longer time because you feel like certain elements were cramped, needed more breathing room, or that dangerous plot points didn’t get enough sense of weight. More time would presumably give that flow and sense of scale and danger. Now, it’s true that more time would give us more content to develop these things. That said, I believe solutions aren’t always “add more.” Creating good art isn’t about adding new things; it’s about knowing when to take away or alter, and how to make every second of your creation count optimally.

I remember when I was doing my music composition degree, my instructors hammered into me what would make a good final piece: the editing process of deleting measures - even measures that were really good! - because they didn’t fit what the final product needed. It’s painful to delete, but ultimately, it’s freeing; instead of making a music piece more cluttered to put all possible good ideas in, I can make it less cluttered, more manageable, more beautiful, more meaningful, and more effective to audiences. A better overall piece isn’t putting in every good idea I have; it’s leaving the piece with the beautiful ideas it needs.

I suggest The Hidden World doesn’t need added materials so much as it needs refining what’s already there.

Budget, production green lighting, and carefulness to the script all seem to have been done. HTTYD 3 was given a longer production time than originally planned. They pushed back the date exactly so they could make their best product. Interviews with people like DeBlois and Spielberg (who read several definitions of the script) talk about how much the script was transformed and bettered through its drafts. They did enough tweaking and care to rework the script. As for budget, the movie was 129 million USD, which sure was the cheapest of the HTTYD trilogy to create, but it’s about on par with what DreamWorks has spent on other movies like Home and Trolls - it’s not like there was skimping - and it’s all about making your money count, which I think this glorious, top notch animation quality film effectively did. So from what I’ve heard, I think production ran fine and we can’t question THW there.

I think most of THW’s problems can be solved simply by tweaking how scenes go down, taking a few small elements out, and adding a few small elements in. It doesn’t need time changes; it needs internal modifications to what’s already there. What I propose wouldn’t change much of the movie’s length - though maybe I we could add 5-8 minutes for things like a longer climax.

1. To Feel Less “Cluttered” or “Rushed”

The movie didn’t feel rushed to me or too cluttered, but it’s cluttered. You’re right. In addition to creating less clutter, my suggested tweaks will clear up time THW can spend elsewhere, streamline THW into fewer palatable essential ideas, and give a slight tone makeover that will add more sense of danger and conflict that THW needs.

Fewer humor side gags with minor characters (and less time spent on them). The gang’s antics are fun additions, yes, but that doesn’t mean they’re central to what the plot needs. Spending too much time with them adds clutter and takes away from plot-central, tone-central material. There’s a huge gaggle of gags in THW, more than any movie needs in a less-than-two-hour-long run time. Do we need all these to give THW its comic relief? Don’t get me wrong - I loved the humor - but time needs to be prioritized, and the movie will be improved once “less is more.”

Less time with Tuffnut’s pep talks. This goes with my first point. This comedic gag was lengthy in particular. It’s in part because it connects to the idea of Hiccstrid marrying, which THW does make more central in its themes. However, I also propose:

Spend less time (or delete) the will-they won’t-they marry Hiccstrid plot. THW intends to parallel Hiccup and Toothless maturing into adulthood, including their romantic connections. However, a will-they won’t-they marry subplot in Hiccstrid isn’t needed to create that parallel. Not to mention: it can be uncomfortable to have this undertone of romance as “required” adulthood maturation, and the fact that Hiccstrid are so close and intimate makes it feel “off” that they’re so uncomfortable talking about marriage. Spend less time here, simply make fans aware they’re going to marry in the future but not today, and return to the main relationships THW needs to pay attention to: that of Hicctooth and Nightlight. 

2. To Make Grimmel a Greater Sense of Threat

One of the central points is that Grimmel is extremely dangerous and represents one of many humans that’ll continue to be a threat to dragons. While Grimmel can be overcome, Hiccup will need to interact with Grimmel in such a way he can understand that dragons and humans cannot coexist in today’s civilization without continuing to risk danger, and that it’s best for everyone to live happily in two separate civilizations. It’s not being defeated by the enemy’s oppression, but taking a brilliant countermeasure to give humans and dragons both a better existence.

Making Grimmel feel like a greater sense of threat, and helping audience members understand what Grimmel represents overarchingly of humanity’s current antagonistic state, will help us and Hiccup process why a separation is best. This can be done by:

Show Grimmel’s impact on human society. All we’d have to do is change what his base looks like: it could be located in an area taken over from another human civilization, showing his army’s power and place in this world over humans.

Greater weight placed on Berk’s exodus. The Hooligans lost their home, but it’s played too lightly. It’s not written optimally as an emotionally impacting or destabilizing moment, which decreases the sense of threat Grimmel has. Instead of having the Hooligans excited to find New Berk, show them grieving. They can butt against Hiccup’s ideas of finding the Hidden World, but instead in a way where they’re frustrated at his naive solution and hurt at what they left behind. This isn’t adding time to THW; this is tweaking phraseology and presenting an event differently.

Change how Berk is abandoned. To make the attack feel more dire, threatening, either: 1. Have the Hooligans more reluctant and grumpy to leave in the town meeting, and not play the leaving scene so lightly, or 2. Have Grimmel chase them out of Berk so they have to flee then and there. This might even reduce time! 

Show Grimmel’s power over dragons. We could have a few-second-long flashback of him standing over a field of dead Night Fury bodies, or have his place cloaked in dragon skins or skulls. 

Show Grimmel’s power as a warlord. Grimmel acts in almost a solo fashion, despite cooperating with warlords and having an army. It doesn’t give us a good sense of scale. Show his interactions better with the whole of his forces to make him feel more dangerous, and for humanity as a whole to feel more like a threat against dragons. For example, in the scenes where he’s trying to trap the dragon riders, show him commanding more people.

Show Grimmel’s impact on the dragon (and/or human worlds) through landscape. What if, as the Hairy Hooligans try to find a new place to stay, they fly over several islands that have been destroyed by Grimmel’s forces? Either human civilizations, or homes once havens to dragons, with characters making comment they “hope” people got away. And what if, when Grimmel takes their dragons near the end of THW, it’s again through more violence and a raid and fire and destruction? 

Conversations more clearly talk about Grimmel’s dangers over dragons and humans, and how he’s one of many people that’ll arise. This idea is embedded in THW dialogue, but not clearly enough to fully grasp its weight, especially not in the sense we see characters grasp this. Have Hiccup and Astrid and Valka or something talk about how widely destructive Grimmel is, how even once he’s gone another man like him will take his place, and that while they may continue to fight and win for human and dragonkind, it’s ultimately not the right move to make for everyone to live safest and alive. A conversation laying this out makes a world of difference in our understanding of what dangers are going down and why we need to come to the solution THW concludes with. Again, this isn’t adding time; it’s changing phraseology. 

Add a few minutes to the climax. Make the final fight with Grimmel obviously the final fight, the threat bigger, the action more intense.

Perhaps show that Berk’s done good work changing the world by their choices. Even though Berk ultimately decides to let the dragons go, they are meant to be the voice of peace that changes their world. The good guys can’t resign to letting themselves live under the thumb of bad guys’ choices. Show that they’ve made a difference - Grimmel and his armies are gone and the world is regrowing (no more torched landscape, if we add that element in) - but that it’s still going to help their world by letting dragons go, too… for this generation, at least.

3. To Make Hiccup and Toothless’ Parting Jive Better

Hiccup and Toothless separate out of need - they can’t live in the same place for the better of both their kinds. However, since the movie spends so much time on Toothless chasing after the Light Fury, we don’t get that full sense of need. I propose:

Open THW with a clear Hicctooth sappy bonding moment. We need things like “Forbidden Friendship” and “Where No One Goes” to feel the power of Hicctooth’s love. Give us that starting sense in THW of how close they are before adding in the complications. It can even be done by tweaking how the opening fight scene goes down.

Show dragons profiting by living with humans, but it also being Complicated with their wild side. We need to acknowledge that the relationship between humans and dragons has done the dragons good, too! Otherwise it might feel incongruous with the rest of the franchise.

Show dragons being unfit in the urban area through their own restlessness. The movie tries to show this with Moosie Boi being too big for Berk, and Berk being so crowded with dragons Gobber finds the soup unsanitary. But if we see Stormfly restless and want to leave for the Hidden World, too, wouldn’t this say something more about where dragons are pulled to and belong?

Less time spent on Toothless investigating the Night Fury. You can’t cut this down too much or we’ll feel like rushing, but since THW focuses so much on just Toothless and the Light Fury’s connection rather than an overarching problem for dragons, it’s hard to feel the full-scale issues of the problem. Making it just him and her feels more like a hook up love story than “dragons and humans are incompatible for their needs.”

Change Toothless’ body language. Show more emotional division in Toothless about his conflicting options. Show him hesitant to leave Hiccup and the two interact over that. Show him lonely away from his kind when with Hooligans. Show him feeling that loneliness met - that deep emotional need of being with his own species - when he’d thought was lost to him (rather than focusing on it being a romantic hookup interest). This doesn’t take more time; it tweaks what was already given on screen.

Change Toothless’ emotions with the Light Fury to feel more like loneliness being met than horny boi practicing kissing with a rock. This does a better job of showing that Toothless has a deep need that needs to be met as a wild animal and as a social draconic species.

Change conversations Hiccup has with humans about Toothless’ struggle. Maybe have Hiccup processing less with people and more by himself or with Toothless. Don’t write the conversations with people be about “Toothless has a girlfriend” and “of course he left.” Discuss instead how Night Furies are social creatures and Toothless hasn’t been with his kind in six years - that’s a huge hole in his heart being filled. Validate the deep connection Hiccup and Toothless have, while simultaneously acknowledging the struggle of this moment now. The movie shows that the Light Fury can never be domesticated, so I think that’s fine, but maybe one line from Astrid saying, “I don’t think she’ll come to live with us,” would be enough to help other audience members pick that up too.

More time spent on all dragons being in danger, and Toothless as an alpha unable to protect them with Hairy Hooligans. The story doesn’t show Toothless being much of an alpha - intentional - until he reaches the Hidden World and it clicks. But I suggest it’d be more effective to pull this out more than having an issue with Moose Boi taking up too much space in Berk, and Berk being so crowded Gobber has a dragon in his soup.

Put more of a deal on Toothless being an alpha. You can say that Toothless didn’t understand or use his role as alpha when with humans, but I think showing more sense of conflict, and of an alpha needing to be wild to protect his own, would be useful. Make this an issue for all dragons. The alpha status being used as a blackmail device against Toothless to keep the Light Fury alive could be replaced with us seeing the full species of dragonkind being unable to be protected by an alpha apart from his own people. More needs to be done than dragons bowing to him in one scene to understand what the alpha does for his society.

Show Toothless with more Light Furies. The Light Fury being his singular focus is great. But what about, in the Hidden World, Hiccup and Astrid watch Toothless interacting with a whole group of Night Furies, and he’s clearly in a situation that was Made For Him?

THW already has great content in there - Toothless and the Light Fury interacting, Hiccup crying when he realizes Toothless is fit in the Hidden World, Hiccup freaking out and Astrid comforting him when he feels a low, and Hiccup and Toothless parting ways touchingly at the end.

With these proposed tweaks, we get Toothless and Hiccup’s relationship being addressed deeply from the angle of both friends. We understand what both Toothless and Hiccup emotionally feel, and palatably sense how both love the other. We get a sense that Toothless is attracted to the Light Fury and might want to mate, but that she’s also calling him into a wild life and reminding him that he’s been alone, separated from his kind. We get a sense that it’s not just Toothless, but all dragons who might be called back to the Hidden World. We get a sense that it’s not just Toothless, but his whole role as alpha affecting the entirety of dragonkind.

And once we add in a greater sense of Grimmel being dangerous, and that more humans like him will continue to rise up, we can understand why Berk would release all their dragons. It’s not that dragons hate living with humans - THW can make that clear - and it’s not that dragons haven’t been profited by living with humans. But in the current call, the current situation, it’s best to go to the Hidden World.

I’m mostly tweaking how scenes go down, changing lines and reactions rather than adding material. Feel free to propose a longer movie! For me, THW already has enough space to share its message. Maybe it needed to be a few minutes longer, but I suppose my own sense is that they had enough time to budget in this material, make a smooth-flowing movie with all the material they needed to present, and come away with an astounding storyline.

Like you, this isn’t meant to judge the movie as bad! It isn’t bad! It’s downright wonderful in many aspects. I’m so happy I’ve seen it and can scream over it! Simply, if I were in charge of tweaking the script, these are the first alterations I’d make, and I think it would make THW even better.

So, I 100%ed the Kingdom Hearts Franchise.

Alright. This might be a long take, just saying that now. But I know exactly where to start. This franchise. Is not as confusing as the entirety of the internet would like you to believe. It's mostly due to bad writing decisions here and there. I mean, yeah if you wanna have every single detail and definition ingrained into your brain. Then of course it can get complicated, but what franchise lasting as long as Kingdom Hearts isn't annoyingly convoluted? I can't think of one.

So my thoughts about  the series is that they're pretty good! Both as a story and as games, with some very big exceptions. I wanna say that you should definitely not try to 100% all of these games in chronological order in rapid succession. It will drain you. I can confirm this beyond a shadow of a doubt. After I beat KH2 it really start to hit me. Chain of Memories was fine, if not a bit tedious to get all the cards and Riku to level 100. But other than that I more than enjoyed my time with the game.

Heartless are born from the darkness in peoples hearts. Nobodies are created from the husk of a body left behind in the creation of a Heartless. While Unversed are born from supreme negative emotions that live inside us all. The stronger these feelings are/the person is, the stronger the heartless/unversed and nobody. Especially strong people can keep their identity when transformed into Nobodies. Thus explaining Organization 13. Only the keyblade can truly defeat these creatures. What's so hard about describing that to someone? It isn't that far fetched in terms of the fantasy genre.

Though personally. I have an enormous hatred from Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance. Despite trying to keep an open mind about any and all forms of media I come across, I cannot ever get behind this title in the series because it is just too much and strays too far from what i consider to be "Kingdom Hearts". The gameplay was not fun for me personally, the story was iffy at best in comparison to the others and it really felt like the biggest amount of padding. If you have to do that to become a Keyblade Master, I think i'd rather stay as a rouge agent like Sora did for 99% of the series.

The dream eater system was probably the biggest factor here as for 100% completion you have to get every single dream eater, and every single skill that they can give you which means leveling a lot of them up to the point where they have points to buy said skills. Which takes forever. And then there's the Dream Eater tournaments, which I would have never gotten past without cheap strategies I found online. Usually I get everybody to max potential in these games and give the best items and accessories all around. But as soon as I got the platinum I ejected the disk and took a break. I felt like I needed it.

Alright, putting that behind us. The difference in fighting styles from game to game can get a bit jarring but in the PS4 re-releases it can usually be adjusted too in about half an hour to an hour's worth of gameplay. Chain of Memories was fun, but tedious like I mentioned. And Birth By Sleep was actually a fresh of breath air (until you get to the secret boss fights that is...) If it wasn't for my need to see that 100% bar next to the game title I would classify these games as something everybody should try out and enjoy. They are fantastic experiences. So lets go in order for a bit.

KH1 is a classic story, going through Disney worlds with a fine mix of Final Fantasy. Meeting the princesses and seeing they are "Princesses of Heart" that have strength beyond muscles. Able to use the power of Light and what not. There's a few hiccups here and there (like Cloud and Sephiroth not acting like how they are in FF7 but everyone's already mentioned that.) But aside from that and the bad platforming, its a genuinely fun game to 100% and I'd highly recommend it. Maybe even try to get cosmic arts for everyone so you can have 16-19 MP bars. It gets silly.

Chain of Memories i've already mentioned a lot so far. So I don't think I need to go that in depth. Fun to go through but wouldn't recommend 100%ing it because it takes far to long. The story is actually pretty decent and isn't that complicated. Sora and the gang lose their memories of KH1 because of the magic witch Namine, while we get our first look at Organization 13.

KH2. The golden child. Still played by many to this day and its obvious to see why. The game play is crisp and fantastic as I remember it from my youth. Traveling to Disney worlds again (and not card versions of them that have no people except for cut scenes, like CoM) and having a constant looming threat over your head while you try to have fun on your journey. Its great. I have yet to do a level 1 critical mode (as that's not required thankfully) but I did thoroughly enjoy my regular Critical play though. Story still isn't that bad yet. Organization 13 comes in full force, trying to get a new version of "Kingdom Hearts" so they can restore their humanity. I'd highly recommend 100%ing this one as well. Would also recommend maxing out your stats and putting on multiple Full Bloom+'s and Shadow Archieve+'s for the fun of it.

Birth By Sleep. Still not that bad honestly. It comes at a weird time though, and the story telling kind of requires you to have some outsider knowledge so that you're not thrown for a loop the entire time. So it feels weird to go back in the past, but also necessary for the story as a whole. Fun game to play minus the hundreds of mini games you need to do for all three main characters. If it wasn't for that I would recommend playing this game to completion. It's hard to reach higher levels though and as everyone's who played the game knows. Terra sucks at End Game compared to Aqua and Ven. I beat the Secret bosses by sheer luck and I would not go back for them. You do get to learn the origins of what makes most of the future events play out though and you even get to see younger versions of Organization 13. Back when they weren't evil!

Nothing eventful happens in Re:Coded.

Dream Drop Distance... Already talked about it. Let's move on before i'm forced to remember dream eaters and their annoyingly high pitched theme song.

Birth By Sleep 0.2: A Fragmentary Passage. Really good demo for KH3 in all honestly. I had a fun time with it and seeing Aqua's pain and journey through the realm of darkness for a whole 10 years was interesting.

And now we're at Kh3. The big game we waited so long for. And its... Alright. Nothing really spectacular. The graphics are certainly splendid and gameplay feels great! If not a bit too floaty. Thats a problem for some people, especially those who were avid fans of KH2. But I had no problem with it. I have yet to play it on critical but i've heard it makes things far more entertaining. As for story, its also alright. Not the grand ending I was expecting but it was really fun all things considered. Just another ride through more modern Disney worlds. But no Final Fantasy! I get that they feel KH can stand on its own legs now but you can't take out half the formula that people fell in love with originally. Then there's no battle arena or replayable boss fights. Doesn't have to be the Real Orginization 13. Just any replayable fights with end game gear would be enough.

As for my real problem with the games. Is the treatement of the third member of the original trio. Kairi. Oh, how this character has divided a good portion of the fan base just by existing. It feels like all the time that she is just a damsel for Sora/Riku to save and rescue. In the first game, thats fine. Whatever. She was unconcious the whole time and had her heart within Sora. Chain of Memories was a game about Sora losing his memories and Riku overcoming his darkness. Thats also fine. But in KH2. Really? She gets a keyblade and can't even handle a group of shadows? The lowest level of heartless? It's embarrassing. She's supposed to be a Princess of Heart. What's that even mean anymore? It doesn't even seem relevant.

KH2 should've been her moment to become a party member just like Riku did. I dont care that it means you could possibly not have Donald or Goofy. KH2 felt the most like the penultimate ending to the series than Kh3 did in my opinon. Having the choice between your KH1 buddies (Sora, Donald and Goofy) or the Island Trio (Sora, Riku and Kairi) would have added excellent variety and much needed development for Kairi as a person rather than leaving her as a one dimensional damsel in distress who has a Nobody with more internal conflict and character motivation. Moving past that... BBS is a prequel so nothing for the original trio except for meeting Aqua/Ven/Terra. And we come back to the dreaded DDD again.

If my vision for Kairi in KH2 couldn't have become a reality. Then why wasn't DDD Kairi's game? The set up was perfect. The heroes of light need to train to overcome almost double the amount of darkness agents. Kairi (and Axel) are practically beginners at wielding a Keyblade. It should've been their time to shine and get some love while occasionally helping Sora and Riku in their Mark of Mastery exam. Why did it have to be something you do alone? Well actually you're not alone you have the stupid Dream Eaters. Regardless it could have been the newbies learning how to get to Kh2 Sora's level while Sora goes beyond his limits.

As for KH3, it's just awful. Kairi's treatment is awful and everyone knows it. She said she was gonna help but hit one whole heartless in the finale. Better than KH2 i suppose. And as for the argument of her being "too weak" to try anything agaisnt Xemans. Really? She couldn't even like. Step on his foot? Pull agaisnt his grip or switch which hand the blade is in? Since the keyblade can teleport to your hands when you need it. I don't expect her to randomly become a Keyblade Master, but. I think we all would've prefer if she just did ANYTHING over what actually happened. It's sad. I hope KH4 will give Kairi the proper treatment and character development she deserves. But for all we know it might be another Sora/Riku dual protagonist game like CoM or DDD. What do you think?

My hero academia 213 How to Destroy Potential

My hero academia Chapter 213 has to put it bluntely, been controversial to say the least. the only reason its not the most controversial part of this series, is due to the handling of endeavor.

some are okay with it, and thinks it’s got a lot of potential. others just see it as a blatant rethreading of the road that in the end destroyed Both Bleach and Naruto, two series that at their height was the cream of the crop of not only shonen, but the entire manga medium(at least if one goes by sales numbers), but as the story went on, completely fell in over themselves, and abandoned the things fans loved about the series. In the End fans of bleach got so fed up with the series, that it got canceled in the middle of its final fight. one does not get a more humiliating fall than that.

and now, MHA is seemingly going down the same road. that road of course, being powerscaling.

Powerscaling is a very tricky buisiness, as for any series with superpowers, you will at some point have to establish a hierarcy, of who is at the bottom, the middle, and easily the most important one, at the top.

How strong characters can be in a setting, is immensely important, because that one simple question, determines how strong/usefull any character not at the very top can be in the grand scheme of things.

it is also very important to put a ceiling on how strong a character can become, lest the need for characters to always get stronger and stronger, means that they will reach a point where the only thing that matters anymore is brute strength.

naruto at the end of its series, had essentially destroyed itself due to the fact that its main characters were now so powerfull, that literarly everyone else was worthless in comparison.

bleach went the opposite route, with a villain that was so broken and powerfull, that there was no way his defeat was EVER going to be satisfying, and in the end people didnt care anymore, once the end was reached, and it was killed before its time.

In MHA’s case, the road so many people think its going down, is the road, of Naruto, with its protagonist Izuku Midoriya, gaining 6 entierly new powers, which for Many, Many reasons, threatens to break this story across its knee.

Now i will not go into wheter these powers were well foreshadowed. ive seen both arguments, with many being frustrated they come out of nowhere, while some saying its been foreshadowed since chapter 2.

What i want to focus on, are the powers themselves, and the implications they have on Izuku, and the entire rest of the cast.

Izuku midoriya, at the start of the series, obtained the quirk One for All, a quirk passed on through the generations, which seemingly only granted immense superhuman strength, and all that comes with that(speed, power, and to some extent durability).

for the past 200 chapters, we have explored the drawbacks and powers of this quirk. its unmatched sheer power, but also that its a quirk that one needs to master over time, and if the new user isnt given time to adapt to it, it will destroy the users limbs.

and this was not a for show flaw either. over the course of this series, izuku, again and again used the quirk freely in order to overcome his obstacles, and in the end, he damaged his arms with permanent nerve damage, with the promise that if it happened once or twice more, he would suffer full use of his arms.

in order to compensate for this, he did something you almost never see in any series. he completely ditched his original style of fighting in favor of one that had nothing to do with his old one, but allowed him to use his legs instead of his now damaged arms in order to minimize risk of further damage.

izukus entire journey was about achieving control, over a power he already had achieved, and in the end he was forced to completely rework his powers to achieve success.

then, after we got a full sense of what izuku could do at 100% power, izuku would go on to try and fix one of his main weaknesses, his lack of a ranged attack.

and using his own newfound grasp over his powers, and a bit of tech help, izuku did so, developing a quite usefull ranged attack.

Izuku at this point had reached around 20%/30% of his full power potential, and was really starting to come into his own.

then a completely new power emerged, and izuku was told by one of the previous users of one for all, that in no uncertain terms he would develop 6 entierly new quirks, and that this was the real true potenital of One for All.

This reveal completely redefined the entire series, izukus journey, the potential of EVERYONE ELSE, and how things would be going foreward.

Uncertainty---

Now the first defence against those who like the reveal, and doesnt think this makes izuku overpowered, is that we dont know what any of the new quirks are, other than Izuku’s new Black Whip.

and they are right. we dont know what they are. and thats a big problem.

Now whenever Izuku is in a bad spot, there will always be a chance that the stress will kick in and activate a new quirk, and turn the tide of battle.

it doesnt matter if this never, ever happens. the problem is that its something that we now know COULD happen, and thus it decreases any tension out of any fight izuku will ever have between now and when the final quirk is revealed. Thusly, izuku having these quirks have now dealt a mortal blow against any tension his fight may have had.

Now, to be fair, i want to show a case of this kinda trope done right to compare it to. Naruto and ichigos, kyuubi and hollow transformations before either of them mastered their transformations.

the reason why both of these worked, is that while there was always the possibility that they would just go loose and fix whatever was happening(which is exactly what happened in several cases) we the audience had an advantage we do not have with Izuku’s quirks. we knew what both the hollow powers and the kyuubi could do. while there was the obvious question of just how strong either of these could become before the MC just lost all control, we knew and understood what both these forms could do, and what would lead them to emerge.

we do not have this with izuku’s quirks. we dont know what any of them except Black Whip can do. as my buddy Quirkquartz put it, izuku might have a healing quirk thats powerfull enough to fix his arms and all injury ever. thats probably not gonna be the case, but then again, it could be. We DONT know.

how strong izukus quirks end up being is immaterial. as long as we dont know what any of these quirks are, there is always the chance that they will turn out to be something that will completely fix whatever the issue is at the moment.

and all the way from now and until we learn what the final revealed quirk is, that will be a massive problem.

Replacing other now obsolete characters---

One of the most obvious and blatant problems with giving izuku more quirks, is that it makes other characters irrelevant. ill go over the full problems with powerscaling later, but lets focus on the most obvious and blatant problem, as its actually a problem already.

the fact that izukus quirks will probably end up flat out just be other characters powers, just better.

and unlike other concerns about this reveal, this one has actually happened already.

Izuku’s black whip, is essentially the quirk of his fellow classmate Sero, just better in every way. and what that means is that any chance sero ever had of being relevant and unique just died.

One of the biggest problems of powercreep is when the only thing that matters is brute power, and the only thing that matters is who is the most powerfull guy on the team.

that is a legitimate concern of where this might all head, but there is another problem with powercreep when it comes to developing new powers.

flat out making characters obsolete.

what is the point of sero, now that izuku can do what he can do, just better? the answer is that there isnt any. Sero might as well have died, given that any potential he had to be somewhat unique just got destroyed by izuku getting a power which is his, just better.

to illustrate the importance of uniqueness, ill give an example of a character who is the weakest of his entire group, yet has one nitche that only he can do.

Usopp from one piece, is the weakest fighter of the entire strawhat pirates, bar none. yet he is also the sniper of the crew, and when it comes to long range situations, there simply arent anyone in the crew who comes even close to doing what he can do at that range.

this has lead to him being instrumental several times in the manga, saving the day, when no one else could, because even though there are plenty of enemies he just cannot beat, he is still a worthwhile character who can do stuff no one else can do.

Now, with the introduction of Black Whip, we will never see a similar situation for Sero. he’s irrelevant, and to put it bluntly, obsolete.

and there is a genuine fear that this will happen again when other quirks are introduced. whats there to say the next one wont be an explosion power, which is probably more powerfull than bakugous?

Making previous development meaningless---

like the previous point, this one is also a problem thats already happened. namely that the introduction of Black Whip, just made izukus previous development of a ranged attack pointless. maybe once izuku really gets a massive grip of OFA, and his ranged air attack become ridiculously powerfull, it will be relevant again, but at that point, he could just punch like all might and get the same effect.

which brings up the question. if the next devlopment is to master black whip, then what the hell was the point of izuku devloping a ranged attack?

again, there isnt any. ranged wind attack is now flat out overshadowed for its intended purpose, and will now be a niche ability.

Unnecesary Powers and lack of creativity---

And now we get to delve into the subject of the concept of the OP character, and wheter izuku qualifies or not.

one argument ive seen leveled over and over, is that izuku was always going to be overpowered, so giving him extra quirks isnt a problem in the grand scheme of thing. after all, he’s gonna be overpowered either way right?

which raises a question. wheter izuku actually is going to become overpowered or not(a question ill dive into in the next section), did he need more powers? what was wrong with his established set? was simple superhuman strength a power which simply didnt work in the long run?

There is some legitimate critisism on the subject, in that izukus fights for a long time, tended to end the same, unless it was a curbstomp. izuku would simply get angry and hit them really really hard, and often break his body in the process.

and there is some genuine problems there. many pf izukus fights were indeed like that. i would argue however, that this was a problem on Koheis part, rather than an inherited problems with OFA itself.

After all, there are plenty of moments where izuku uses his strength in order to win in other ways than just hitting people directly. izukus first fight with bakugou was won like that, and him saving himself, tsuyu and mineta on the boat was a great combination attack.

The big problem is that kohei has relied on enemies with direct power against izuku far too often.

Overhaul was building up to be a direct counter to that. a physically normal man, with ridiculous powers, that was more than a match for izuku. then he became a punching bag in order to demonstrate how strong izuku is at 100%

Gentle was similar, then at the very end, La Brava revealed her quirk to be one which powered gentle up drasticly, turning their fight into yet another power struggle(though addmitingly one which izuku won withouth destroying himself).

The big problem is that when it comes to izukus fights, kohei has lately relied far too mutch on hard hitters to fight izuku, rather than letting fights like izukus vs gentle or overhaul to reach a logical conclusion. instead coming back to the age old power struggle.

Yet he has proven over the series that he can write better than that, and in my opinion, the big problem is that he simply hasnt when its come to izukus fights.

and, now, lets go over the big subject, the one that defines this debate.

Powerscaling in all its messy glory----

The big, big question that is asked again and again with this devlopment, is, doesnt this make izuku OP as fuck? and often those who like the idea to redirect the question with replies like, and so what? he was always going to be OP, this changes nothing. or the tried and true, lets wait and see how Kohei writes it.

lets begin with the biggest question, was Izuku always going to be OP?

the answer is both Yes and no. he was always going to be OP in that his brute force was never going to be matched, thats true enough, and the entire series has been built upon that premise. however, that doesnt mean that izuku would be able to solve every single problem he would face on his own, nor that he could beat every single enemy he ever faced.

if you actually look at 1-a’s powerset, there is an obvious collection of flat out combat quirks(which makes sense given the entrance exam) but there is also a large variety of powers.

Acid, explosions, fire/ice, lasers, electricity, shadow, sound. these are all direct combat quirks, yet none of them are usefull for direct physical combat.

of the direct physical combat(and nothing else) fighters there are 6; tsuyu, kirishima, ojirou, tenya, shoji and sato.

now, lets look at these in full and see how they compare in potential for one for all.

Tsuyu, has superhuman strenght and agilty and a incredibly long and strong toungue. also has camouflage powers, which OFA does not have anything resembling, and can also climb on walls.

Kirishima, is superhumanly durable to an insane degree. how this compares to OFA durability at both of their heights is unknown, but it could consievably be more durable than a OFA user after kirishima has hammered it as far as it could go.

ojirou, has a tail. OFA is and always will be better.

Tenya, has ridiculously high speed, and at this current stage is FAR faster than izuku, and could possibly grow even faster. how a possible max speed would compare to AFO is unknown, but its completely possible that tenya would be the flash to izukus superman.

Shoji, has transformation powers, which is often used for direct combat but can also be used for other things like scouting by sound, leave behind dropped off body parts for distractions or decoys and probably other usefull things.

and finally sato, who grows superhumanly strong when he consumes sugar. his max strenght seems to be far inferior to izuku already at this stage.

so, out of the entire class, only two members had nothing to bring to the table which OFA could not do better in every way, no question.

does this mean that all of the quirks had the potential to reach OFA’s level? of course not, but that didnt mean they had to be useless.

after all, characters like sero could fill their own niche. oh wait.

the big problem with giving izuku even one more quirk(much less 6) is that suddenly he can do stuff that other characters can do, just much better. and this isnt something we speculate on. its already happened. Black whip is better than seros quirk in every way. the moment izuku gets any grip on black whip, sero serves no point.

which leads to the next point.

one argument against this being a terrible idea for the story as a whole, is that its not likely that izuku will have mastered these quirks right out of the gate. and that is true. it will probably take izuku as long a time to truely master black whip as it took to master his original powers. but that doesnt really matter, in the grand scheme of things. because wheter it takes a week, a month or a year, the end result remains the same. Black Whip will have made sero a completely obsolete character. there simply isnt any way around that. 

izuku will make more and more characters obsolete everytime he unlocks another quirk. wheter the next is mineta, jirou, kirishima or even todoroki and bakugou, each time it happens someone will become the new yamcha.

which leads me to the next point. there is no point of any other characters training to be the next number one hero, as this devlopment will have killed any shot todoroki or bakugou ever had of matching up to izuku in any way.

the bakugou/izuku rivalry is effectively over, as there isnt any way bakugou could even hope to measure up to izuku now.

it was a tall order with izuku only having one for all, but idd argue that its impossible now, that he’s got more than OFA.

Hell, even with just black whip, izukus potential is now so wast that it dwarfs any other. BW pretty mcuh removes all the few drawbacks of a fully mastered OFA, namely its lack of range beyond moving wind currents and bursts. izuku could potentially have been left helpless in the air open to counterattacks, even after fully having mastered OFA. with BW, that “pesky”weakness has now been removed.

the simple fact of the matter is that One for ALL was such a powerfull quirk that giving it ANY boost beyond its already established powers, had the severe risk of completely undermining every single other characters. 6 entierly new and probably all very powerfull quirks on top of it?

i simply cannot see any way that will be done well and these powers will benefit the story, even by an author who has done no wrong. and kohei is not one such.

this development is not a sudden sign that kohei is becoming a terrible writer. he’s been fucking up for a while now. 

He wasted all the potential of the overhaul arc, which had so much potential, that was flushed down the toilet, and he completely failed to make me(and many, MANY others) feel anything in regards to Endeavors “redemption” arc.

Kohei is capable of writing great stuff still, the festival arc was great, this recent arc has been wonderfull up until pretty recently, and ive loved so much of what has happened over the last year.

But he isnt a writer who makes no mistakes. and quite frankly, im tired of the argument that we should wait and see. i waited and saw during the overhaul arc. it did not have a finale that i particularly loved. i waited and saw during the endeavor arc. and again, i didnt get anything i wanted out of that conclusion, neither endeavor losing an eye, a real confrontation between endeavor and dabi, nor endeavors potential death, which is what i expected and wanted out of that arc.

im tired of waiting and seeing. this is a terrible and quite possibly a point of no return for MHA quality and potential, and im gonna call it out as such.

Florian Rudy Interview (spring 2018)

Sorry for misspelled words. This was recorded before the world cup in Russia 2018 took place.

F:      My name is Florian Rudy. I’m 29 years old. And I live in Stuttgart.

N:     Who is your brother?

F:      Well, I have more than one brother. (laughs). The oldest is Sebastian. And I guess he is the one that this interview is all about. And then I have Felix and Maximilian too. And a sister as well.

N:     And your sister is older, younger?

F:      My sister is in the middle. She’s 19 years old.

N:     Did she enjoy being between all the older and younger boys?

F:      I think it wasn’t so easy for her in the beginning. Having three big brothers. She really had to deal with a lot. And I think she just handed it down to the youngest sibling and she was able to let everything out on him. But now I think it has alot of advantages. I think three big brother that protect her is always good.

N:     Really nice. Do you feel good today?

F:      Absolutely! I was really looking forward for this interview today! And I’m very motivated.

N:     Good. Well then tell us something about yourself. Back when you were little. How did you discover sports? Has football been already very present in your family?

F:      Yes football has always played a big role in our family. It has always been a topic of discussion. We are a complete football-family in that regard. My father played himself. I think he also played with Jürgen Klinsmann in one team. My mother was a football fan as well. She is from Kaiserslautern. She has always been on the Betzenberg (Stadium in Kaiserslautern) … so for us as children we had the perfect circumstances in that regard. And thats what they handed over to us as kids. We grew up with football from the very beginning. And we… I think I was five years old and Sebastian four – when we both started playing football. So those were the first steps we took.

N:     I mean if you are young have you guys – or you in particular – thought about doing different sports? I mean there are so many other sports you can try – other than football.

F:      Yeah sure. I would say football has always been our main sport, simply because of our parents. But my parents also insisted to try out other sports as well. We also played tennis and ice hockey.  But then slowly those sports took a step back in our lives and it all narrowed down to football again. Because we also made to the upper youth teams as kids around at VfB Stuttgart, where he went at a very young age. And then we didnt have enough time for other sports.

N:     But those changes in terms of sports – how does puberty play a role? I mean it is still very young…

F:      Sure. Sebastian was fourteen and I was fifteen years old.

N:     Leaving home at that young age – how was it like for you guys?

F:      Lets put it this way: at the beginning we didn’t leave our home immediately. Only our parents had to drive us to Stuttgart every day. Almost 100 kilometers…

N:     How about all the other siblings? Did they have to go with you guys… or were they brought to their grandmother? But it really consumed the daily life of the family…

F:      Absolutely! Sebastian and I – we were driven to Stuttgart for practice. The others were smaller back then, they stayed home. One year after that – my path took me to Kaiserslautern and so I had to move out my parents home at the age of fifteen. But that wasn’t a problem at all for me. I always wanted to go out and see the world and explore stuff. I think it was difficult for our mom though. The fact that the first son leaves home… yeah.

N:     Well you then have a lot of practice sessions; games over the weekends… did you develop other hobbys? I mean especially at that young age and if you want to explore the world… Or are you this much into football and everything? Because you have to pay special attention to your body and all… I dont think you were able to go into clubs until the early morning every now and then…

F:      Hm, well I think you dont pay that much attention to your body at that age. You dont listen as much to your body because you try to do more and more… and try everything. But football really dictated our day. It was only school, football, eating and sleeping… thats it.

N:     Did you expericence like mood swings? Having days where you woke up and thought „I dont want to do anything today“?

F:      I cant recall anything like that, no.

N:     Oh ok. It was pure fevor!?

F:      Absolutely. I mean it started very early. We used to get back home from school. Throwing away your school bags, grab your friends and went outside to the local football pitch and we played the whole day. I dont think many boys and girls do not do this anymore. Because of cellphones, I-pads and so on… but it was exactly like this back in the day. We played on the field, on the streets…

N:     Did you use like furniture or things at home to play football?

F:      Oh yeah! (laughs). Many! (laughs). Especially if we started playing in the living room with dad. And then my mother came from the back and yelled „Stop it!“ (laughs). Back in the day, we even took the playpen of your youngest brother Maximilian and try to kick the ball into it from everywhere in our house. (laughs).

N:     How many pair of shoes did you need over the year with all this football playing going on?

F:      Absolutely. Every few months we needed new shoes. Also because our feet grew. We needed new ones all the time. And those pairs usually wear themselves off very quick.

N:     Do you remember back in your rooms… did you have – especially from the national team or german football – posters of any big idols or role models? Or players that where very special for you? They don’t have to be german (laughs).

F:      No, well I have to think. I for my part had a jersey and a poster of Cristiano Ronaldo. Sebastian has always been a Leverkusen fan. He had Leverkusen bed linen and he one poster of Bernd Schneider in his room.

N:     I guess its always a dream coming true if you suddently end up playing with or against these player or team for that matter. Sounds exciting…

F:      Absolutely yeah. Its like a dream if you witness something like that.  

N:     Do you have a certain kind of nickname for each other?

F:      (smirks) Yeah, my brother has a family nickname which I dont want to reveal (laughs). But just „Basti“ or “Sippi” thats what his teammates call him regularly. And mine is „Flo“ like many can guess.

N:     Did you have a favorite dish at home? Is there something that just bonds you and him?

F:      Nothing in particular. But back when we were kids, we used to have Maultaschen. That was really our favorite food. We used to have competitions on who can eat more Maultauschen. And this lead to a situation once, where my father intervened because Sebastian already had – I think – nineteen of those and he was scared something bad is about to happen to him. (laughs).

N:     Oh my… stomach pain! (laughs)

F:      Yeah exactly (laughs). But he said he could have eaten more.

N:     Ahm, you yourself also used to play football for some time. And also successful. So how has your path changed? Did you reach physical boundaries? Or how did you experience it?

F:      No not at all. I’m very fit today. I quit playing football at 26 years of age. Thats my personal dead line I had set myself. Because you want to play in the Bundesliga or Second Division around that age – I was playing Third Division and thats were I decided to quit. But I’m still very fit physically like I was back then. But in the end it was a decision about my future. What happens down the road? What do you still want to accomplish? What do you want to do next? And thats were I put an end to professional football.

N:     But wasn’t that more of a decision of reason or was it more like lovesickness and… I guess you still play football, right?

F:      No I quit football completely.

N:     Completely?

F:      Yes, completely. But of course I didnt stop doing sports. I did a lot of fitness training. Running. Going to the gym. I tried out many other things. I once rode my bike 200 kilometers home from Hoffenheim. Or I ran a marathon – so I tried these things as well.

N:     How was the marathon experience?

F:      It was a cool one. I got to know my personal boundaries.

N:     In what time?

F:      I think it was around four hours… I have never trained for a marathon.

N:     But four hours is an impressive time…

F:      It was a quick reaction.

N:     Where did you run?

F:      I for myself ran in Heidelberg. I just told some of my buddies on Friday „Hey I will run a marathon on Monday“ and I never ran a longer distance than 10 kilometers before. So I did it.

N:     And you weren‘t able to walk for three days after that?

F:      I was injured for eight weeks after that. (laughs)

N:     (laughs). I know stories of people running a marathon with no preparation.

F:      Yeah, I really wanted to proof to everyone that I can do it. And I did. But of course I haven’t thought about the consequences about things that can happen or go broke afterwards.

N:     So you also closely followed the development your brother. Did you follow him all the way? Where you with him? Or to put it differently: will you go to Russia to see him play?

F:      Sure. We will fly to Russia with our whole family yeah. Or I will be there – sure.

N:     Are you excited?

F:      Sure! It’s his first world cup. That itself is special, but playing your first one is even more special I think.

N:     Do you think of something special as a family in Russia?

F:      Actually we haven’t thought about it yet.

N:     Your relationship with Russia? Have you been there before?

F:      Yes during the Confed Cup. I flew over for the final with my mom and dad and my brother Felix. We watched the final. We saw Saint Petersburg – a great city! Very nice city. But thats all I can say about Russia.

N:     So you there’s a lot more to come…

F:      Absolutely. Since I like to travel anyway and I like to explore the world… I always enjoy seeing new cities.

N:     So what about yourself. Where are you now? You started to study. What did you study?

F:      Right. I started to study sports business management after I quit playing football. And I tried to position myself on as many different fields possible. I went to Hoffenheim and trained with Julian Nagelsmann. I was part of his coaching staff with the U19 team. And I went through all branches there basically. Yes and the studies. So thats how I tried to position myself as good as I can. I also started an apprenticeship as a personal trainer. And last year I started an consulting agency with Christian Nerlinger.

N:     And you are consulting football players… ?

F:      Yes, for professional football players. And Sebastian is one of them – of course.

N:     Has this always been part of your life? Didn’t you at one point… or let me put it differently: when you were five years old, what did you want to become initially? Like firefighter? Doctor? Pilot?

F:      Well, the big goal has always been being a professional football player.

N:     So then, when you started with your studies, it had to be something with football?

F:      Not necessarily. My major at university doesn’t really has to do alot with football. Sport generally has always been important to me. And I needed a break for a while, once I quit football as a player. I was really burned-out I have to say. And thats why I wasn’t able to watch an awful lot of football shortly afterwards. But after a while I was fine again and I was able to watch football in a comftable and relaxed manner.

N:     Your brother became father just recently.

F:      Correct.

N:     Sounds like it’s going to be difficult to play now and being away for a long period of time. Or do they travel with him?

F:      His son is with his wife. And yes she takes care of him, since Sebastian is away very often and she isn’t able to travel alot yet. She just gave birth a week ago. And I think he was very happy to go back home right after the game of the national team recently.

N:     That’s a new treasure…

F:      Absolutely! Its a complete new chapter in his life. Not only for his life, but for us as a family as well. My parents became grand-parents for the first time. I became an uncle for the first time. A special moment – yes.

N:     How do think the tournament will go? Is there something you wish?

F:      Thats a difficult… ahm… alot oft hings have to work out perfectly at the same time. Sometimes you need luck. Your performance on a specific day. How do the other teams do? It’s really tough to remain world champions – it would be nice if it would work. That would be a giant event – giant miracle. But I think it’s going to be tough.

N:     Do you have secret favourite team to win? Is there a favourite team or are we all in for a surprise?

F:      I dont think there’s a secret favourite. The Spanish team is strong as usual. I think they will play an important role.

N:     Well, then lets keep our fingers crossed and hope for a good world cup. And that you will be successful in your personal goals.

F:      Thank you very much.

N:     And what do you wish for yourself in the next couple of years?

F:      For me personally?

N:     Yup.

F:      There are alot of things on my personal agenda this year. I just recently moved in together with my girlfriend.

N:     A new chapter for you?

F:      Yeah, I mean we are in a relationship for a couple of years now, things have changed since we only live together for about half a year. In a positive way. And I’m very excited to contine to go down that path. My girlfriend also starts working now. She works for Daimler. A totally new chapter for her as well. Then we will see how my personal development will progress – with my agency. Many exciting things to come – for sure. And then let’s see how planing in terms of family will go. (smirks)

CP Book Reflection:

Welcome to my commonplace book assignment, where I will talk about themes and main ideas that I have learned throughout the semester. To start off, I want to talk about my posts that I have selected, (shown below). For primary research I analyzed my classmates' posts from throughout the summer and picked the ones that best focus on my theme. One theme that I believe is real and evident throughout our class is women equality as well as discrimination. I enjoyed reading and getting a better understanding of this theme throughout the semester, especially because I notice these issues in sports all the time. I am a big sports fan and have been following the news about inequality when discussing men and womens sports. I have reblogged multiple posts below that talk about inequality in pay, attention and  popularity. The highest paid male in their given sport is making double or even more than the highest paid women in the same sport. One popular issue that most people have heard about is the controversy between mens and womens national soccer. The US men's team accumulates to over 38 million in total salary whereas the women only totals to 4 million. There are many words that I can use to describe this situation but to be honest it is simply unfair and cruel. Not only because they are doing the same exact thing, but the women have gained more press and popularity than the men due to their success. Not only have they outscored the men in viewership year after year, but they have also won more World Cups and have been overall more noticeable and appreciated. You may be asking why they aren't being paid the same as the men? Well they eventually had enough of the unbalanced system and filed a lawsuit towards the District Court of California. The case consisted of alleged  gender based pay discrimation which blatantly violated the Equal Pay Act and Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. They had hard evidence that the men’s team was making way more than they shouldn't have, in 2015 the women won the world cup and got paid 1.73 million in total bonuses for the players. When the men didn't even come close to winning and still earned 5.38 million in performance based bonuses. Although there are many other cases of discrimation towards women there are also good things happening to improve our equality. Fortune 500 came out with a graph that shows an overview of the number of women CEOs in the 500 from 1999 to 2020. In 1999 there were only 2 total. Fast forward to 37 in 2020, it shows that we are making changes in our society and letting the old traditions slowly dwindle with time.  Although 37 women may not seem like a drastic change, who knows what the total will be in 2025. I find this to be inspiring and interesting to me, especially because I am a Business Administration major. After school I want to earn my job in the most fair way possible, I would never want to be told that I only got the job because of my skin color or gender. Gender pay gaps are also a massive problem in our world. The issue of gender pay is a problem in everycountry not just ours. I looked at a graph that shows the pay gap between men and women in each country. After analyzing the graph it was evident that worldwide change was necessary. In Estonia the pay gap is 21.7% which is the highest in any country. Which means no matter how powerful or talented you are, if you live in a country like this it is very difficult for a woman to be successful. This deeply saddens me because it's as if they dont even have a chance, this is all due to cultural traditions passed down for many years.

Throughout the semester we have read as well as watched videos on women discussing discrimation towards them and other cultures. One thing I realized overtime is that support is one of the best and biggest things we can do to continue towards an equal society. One tumblr post from sdunk43 stood out to me and best describes empowerment towards women. I believe that inorder to keep this momentum towards women empowerment men have to play a role also. Women helping other women reach their full potential is a great thing, and us men should try to do the same for them. We are not in our grandparents' generation anymore where men “rule the world”. We are in 2021 and it's time to make massive strides towards an equal society where a woman can have and be as much as men. This discussion can go into much more detail, because not only have women been affected from this but peeople of color or a different gender face discriminattion everyday. Throughout the month of June our class focused on issues with the LGBT community, and how to better understand what they deal with regularly. Earlier in the semester our class read and discussed Under the Udala Trees. Although it wasnt exactly accurate it gave us a sense of how difficult it was to fight and struggle for change. I am sad to say that Ijeoma struggled and told her story hoping Nigeria would change for the better, but the country still struggles with this issue in the present day. The LGBT has worked so hard to adapt in different cultures, hopefully if we work together and support them every month instead of one we can make a change thatll benefit our society in the future.

To wrap things up, It is important to keep what we learned this semester and to actually support and do things to make our society better, instead of just saying it. It's one thing to say you want change, it's a whole other thing to actually be a part of it. I personally will continue to follow the news in other countries as well as indulge myself into supporting other people in any way possible. I never was a member of tumblr before this class and was unsure what exactly it was about. But after this class I have realized it's a safe place to share aswell as express how we feel and try to work towards a change. I plan to expand my profile and continue to post and hopefully bring awareness to these situations we have encountered throughout the semester. I wish you all the best of luck and hopefully we can think about this class 5 years from now and notice massive improvement to our society,  and strides to full equality.

A There’s this wall-of-text/links going around promoting some rather ignorant ideas on some skewed/misused data. Here’s my modest take.

1. This is a broken link to a ticket distributor ? ?  ?

2.This is a UK journalist's opinion about the 57 years predicted for women to make as much as men and their opinion on another prediction that manager salary will be equalized between men and women by 2067. Their “big conclusion” is “it's not the gender pay gap that is inequitable for women in their twenties and thirties. It's the maternity leave gap.” This is a huge red herring. Sure, on face-value we can address the fact that men in the UK are only offered two weeks off after the birth of a child by their employers. But we're talking about wage gap, not maternity leave. Maternity leave is but ONE reason people rationalize why women ought to make less. And no offence to this surely-esteemed journalist but she ought to read the own links she sourced when she complained that it's the discrepancy is a result of comparing part-time to full time, 'cause as the link of an article discussing a study of pay at 197 organizations, covering 43,312 employees, showed that in certain sectors, such as finance and law, women working full time can earn just over half the amount men get.

In the UK until late 2016, it was perfectly legal for companies to force their employees to sign gagging clauses to prevent colleagues from discussing salaries, bonuses, etc. Unlike what the journalist implied, legislating disclosure of gendered pay isn't “forcing society to pay”. A legally-enforced culture of secrecy only reinforces preexisting biases(women work less hard than men) with gendered exploitation(if we pay women less, they won't be able to tell anyone without legal reprimand!) But I mean this link was debunked as soon as their OWN source stated “in certain sectors ... women working full time can earn just over half the amount men get.”

3. What a surprise, another journalist chewing up some incomplete synopsis of studies from other news sources. In this one, the U.S. journalist who works for a conservative think-tank wants us to believe that 

“The Paycheck Fairness bill would set women against men, empower trial lawyers and activists, perpetuate falsehoods about the status of women in the workplace and create havoc in a precarious job market. It is 1970s-style gender-war feminism for a society that should be celebrating its success in substantially, if not yet completely, overcoming sex-based workplace discrimination.”

There’s two main things that need to be addressed here. First, this U.S. journalist makes these claims about the impact of this bill that would allow for employees to file a suit for gender-based salary is the imminent gender-war & economic “havoc” of workers’ rights. How is this conclusion found? Who knows/cares, certainly not the author. But among their rationalizations they cite 

“A recent survey found that young, childless, single urban women earn 8 percent more than their male counterparts, mostly because more of them earn college degrees.”

Yes. This study did point out that in cities where steel mills and other men-centered workplaces have suffered that women who are single and living in the city can make single-digit improvements over men. Yes, this study did point out that black & latina women enroll in post-secondary education at much higher rates than their respective counterparts. This study shows that in very specific economic and demographic situations, women can make more than men if they’re single, if they’re in the city, if they’re young. The american dream :’)

4. Oh wow, a seven year old blog post that primarily sources itself on a non peer-review book(including broken links to the book’s website) and then some straw-man arguments using arbitrary online news links. Oh wait, the blog post does claim one link as a “study” but in fact it’s just a research assistant’s summary of data published in 2000. Which in fact means it’s data collected from 1999. Kinda stale, dontchathink... So this US blogger makes it pretty easy and simply when they flat-out state 

“In one sense, O'Neill is right about a wage gap -- on average, women earn about 80 cents to a man's dollar.”

So while the author asserts without blinking that men do in fact make more than women for the same job, they then provide a full list of rationalizations for why this is acceptable yet. still. denying. there. is. a. wage. gap. idontevencanyouhelpmeunderstand.

Blogger goes on to say 

Due to the simple laws of supply and demand, these occupations pay more and contribute immensely to the pay gap.

Actually, “these occupations” which “contribute immensely to the pay gap” are pretty damn racialized. For some reason author believes that U.S. govt data doesn’t compartmentalize by profession/domain and it’s all just “men v women” for comparison. This isn’t so. This is why they argue that men work dangerous jobs and higher skill jobs than women and that’s why they make more money (cuz like they’re just better/deserving ok!11!) but then you see in the actual data that it’s latino men and black men who work in the dirty/dangerous/shitty jobs which were previously argued as “higher paying’. And this doesn’t explain why within the same fields, working the same hours, men make more. Hell, it doesn’t even explain why men who enter feminine gender-typed workfields are perceived as more “courageous”/”harder worker” and sooner promoted than women(See: glass - escalator).

5. Onto a pundit who is regularly invited to Republican party retreats and doesn’t even deny there is an income gap between men and women. Hell, they’ll even take it one step further with their conclusion

So we shouldn’t expect that 77 percent figure ever to rise to 100 -- or even want it to.

This doesn’t seem like a source to add onto a list trying to deny there is a wage gap. hbu

6. I’m going to guess this article added from The Wall Street Journal was done through an uneducated use of google searches for a given topic without having actually read the content of the article because like most of us, present author included, don’t have a subscription to The Wall Street Journal. However, I do know what the article is about and we’ve already covered the content in (3). How do I know?

A study of single, childless urban workers between the ages of 22 and 30 found that women earned 8% more than men.

Gee, if you’re young/single/nochild/Urban/crumbling masculine gender-typed industries, you might make 8% more than men? 

7. Here comes another sensationalist news OPINION article, this time from CBS news that puts up this non peer-review book on a pedestal as some myth breaking weapon. Sadly, it’s the same dulled out logic from (4): the same boring old dangerous = higher pay that isn’t supported when you look at the salary of loggers or fishers.

8. This “career news” article tried to make some good points but overlooked a very, very serious issue. In comparing the majors between men and women, you’re kinda forgetting that ~70% of Americans don’t have post-secondary degrees. 

So while it’s correct to point out that choice of majors may account for some disparity between gendered salaries, it doesn’t account for the other 70% of people from the US who don’t have majors but are above 25 and likely to need to find employment. It does however raise the issue of social biases that gender-type women and employment. ;))))

Addendum: They purposely mentioned women in aerospace so I’ll just leave this here

9. This NY times tried to play some fast-and-loose number games by employing sentences like “According to seasonally unadjusted data” and others like “they held 50.3 percent of the nation’s nonfarm payroll jobs in the raw numbers.” Notice anything yet? Well lets just quote the article to conclude the point

Male-dominated industries are actually especially cyclical in two different ways: They are not only influenced by the business cycle, but also by the seasonal cycle. Industries like construction, which tend to employ men, get more work in warmer months.

If you adjust for these regular seasonal factors that affect the job market, women would have held just less than half of the nation’s payroll jobs in January, at 49.9 percent.

Confused why this wasn’t about the wage gap? Me too. This was just an article about how “women are overtaking men in the workforce” @ 49.9% =o

10. I think the OP of this wall of text was trying to play a fast-and-loose one ‘cause this isn’t about the wage gap at all. This is a link that compares what percentage of men worked in 1948 to now and how many women worked in 1948 and now. ‘Lo and behold: ~70% of men work in 2012 and ~58% of women work in 2012, both seasonally adjusted.

11. So this is exactly the same as (10), even going so far as using the same charts and really not in any way talking about any differences in how men and women are paid any differently for doing the same job. This was just an article about men’s declining participation in the workforce.While a fascinating topic, pretty irrelevant to the wage gap. 

12. Clickbait BusinessInsider article that claims that because one university president in Utah says that there’s a 2K salary difference between students’ according to gender, it must be so everywhere yet doesn’t ignore that only 5% of students are in the higher initial pay, nor does it say where they are in 5 years, or 10 years, or 25.

13. So this Reuters article has a brief summary of a study led by Paul Hodgson from the Corporate Institute. This study claims sampled Directors showed that the median income was just under 15% higher for women than men. They’re also out-numbered 8 to 1. Nevermind that a quick search through a more recent Reuters article also states that even tho median is higher, the average executive salary is still much higher for men than the median for the few women around. What’s of real interest in this article is the statement that 

Director pay is typically far below what top corporate executives are awarded 

Why is this interesting? Because Paul Hodgson writes more than a single thing and among his own writings:

Yet, despite the findings of the two surveys, according to an Institute for Women’s Policy Research survey cited by the WSJ – The Gender Wage Gap by Occupation 2013 – women CEOs still lag behind men. Using a much wider sample than the 300 or so CEOs used by the AP and WSJ, female CEOs only earned 80% of what their male counterparts earned.

Heck, even CFO who are women make less, 16% less on average

14. Oh boy. Well for some reason this article is in the print page format, but that’s cool. This ABCnews article likes to promote the idea that because a handful (literally 16 in 2010) of women have become CEOs and have demanded more salary in that one year (2009) that suddenly this makes any kind of difference that only 4.4% (now) of Fortune500 CEO constitute of women. The 2009 article points out that Meyer of Yahoo took home the biggest package of the year for 47 million. A quick scan of this list of the 100 highest paid CEOs of the US place Meyer at #18 on the list, with #1 having 147million. Why are we getting uppity again about a few women getting paid?? ? ? ?

15. If you’re a young woman between 21-30 and living in NYC, you’ll do gr8 says this NY times article which discussed an analysis prepared by Andrew A. Beveridge, a demographer at Queens College. Now what I appreciate about this article is they probably took the time to read more than just another newspaper’s summary of the content because they actually provided a very fascinating breakdown of salary by borough for NYC.

Young women from the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens make more than young men from those boroughs. Young women from Staten Island make the same as men. Among Manhattanites, the median wage for workers in their 20s was $46,859 for men and $45,840 for women. The gender wage advantage for women in their 20s was widest among whites with some college education, blacks and Asians with advanced degrees and Hispanic women who were high school or college graduates. Young men in the city still make more than young women in a number of jobs, including psychologist, registered nurse, high school teacher, bank teller and bartender. In high-paying Wall Street jobs, men heavily outnumber women, which is one reason that Martin Kohli, a regional economist with the federal Bureau of Labor Statistics, described the women’s wage gains as “a surprising finding.”

Remember back in (4) how the racialization of gender might be is impacting the way in which certain regional factors come into play? How about NYC’ stop-and-frisk policies? Or Dallas’? What about the way in which nearly a quarter of Florida’s black men have criminal records? Might this impact the way in which we perceive statistics based on income?

“Here's the slightly deflating caveat: this reverse gender gap, as it's known, applies only to unmarried, childless women under 30 who live in cities. The rest of working women — even those of the same age, but who are married or don't live in a major metropolitan area — are still on the less scenic side of the wage divide.”

“Chung also claims that, as far as women's pay is concerned, not all cities are created equal. Having pulled data on 2,000 communities and cross-referenced the demographic information with the wage-gap figures, he found that the cities where women earned more than men had at least one of three characteristics. Some, like New York City or Los Angeles, had primary local industries that were knowledge-based. Others were manufacturing towns whose industries had shrunk, especially smaller ones like Erie, Pa., or Terre Haute, Ind. Still others, like Miami or Monroe, La., had a majority minority population. (Hispanic and black women are twice as likely to graduate from college as their male peers.)“ “While the economic advantage of women sometimes evaporates as they age and have families, Chung believes that women now may have enough leverage that their financial gains may not be completely erased as they get older. “   

Nothing more to add than their own words. 

17. This is actually the same topic, using the same sources by The Wall Street Journal as from (6). Yes, SOME educated-single-childless-urban-women-21to30 do make a bit more than men of their own age for a time. This is still not a national trend for all women. So yeah, there’s a gap even if one small subset is doing ‘ok’...?

18. This Forbes article does raise some interesting tidbits but nothing that supports the idea that there’s anything myth about the gender gap. So let me excise the important stuff.

Women earned 81 cents for every dollar earned by men in 2010, up from 76 cents in 2000. Moreover, recent reports suggest that young urban women now earn 8% more than male peers, likely due to higher college graduation rates.

Ah, so education = 8% increase over someone with no education? What’s the disparity between educated men and uneducated women? How does education disprove wage gap? ? ? But there’s more.

The fact remains, however, that men still earn more in almost every U.S. occupation—except in a telling few. An analysis of 2009 median weekly earnings for full-time workers, collected by the BLS, reveals at least 15 jobs where women earn slightly more than male colleagues. 

Oh gee. “Slightly more” salary in 15 out of “every U.S. occupation”.

Perhaps most surprising, women out-earn men in several male-dominated construction jobs. Female construction laborers, construction supervisors, maintenance painters, and aircraft and vehicle mechanics earn slightly above the median earnings for both sexes—despite holding just 3% of these jobs.  

Connecticut College economics professor Candace Howes ... conjectures that the few women who enter construction and mechanical jobs are likely highly skilled and more concentrated in union jobs. “It was unionization that provided women access to these male-dominated jobs, and on average those wages are higher [than non-union jobs],” says Howes.

Ah, so union jobs pay more and that’s why “slightly more” salary can be extrapolated for 1 job out of “every”? Cool. 

There is some evidence that men are discriminated against in female-dominated jobs. A 2010 study found that (SPOILER)men were less likely to be called for an interview in fields with 65% or more female workers, an attitude which may be reflected in wages. Employment researcher Laurence Shatkin, author of 2011 Career Plan, says that discrimination or feelings of not fitting in could cause higher turnover rates among (SPOILER) men in these jobs, which wouldn’t allow them to gain seniority and would negatively affect wages. 

But here is something that gave me a pretty big larf. It was just so... ironic, that it was great. I wonder if the author put it in originally or their editor threw it in for the fragile masculinities who may be offended by an article discussing women being paid more in what I assume we’d call “almost none” of U.S. occupations. So a minority that is perceived as stereotypically different is less likely to receive a call-back, and even if they do, they’re subject to leave their workplace for feelings of not fitting in with the existing culture? That does sound like an awful time.

19. Wow, an Elle magazine partnership with MSCBC. This sure sounds like a legitimate source of sampling, amirite. If we sampled 70K people on the internet, would this be an accurate representation of people nationally? Would it account for racial differences? Are the kind of people who answer News-sites/Elle magazine online questionnaires about partner income/household responsibilities are really the average citizens? Very little scientific rigour. Having a massive sample size can actually be statistically harmful. Maybe Elle can cover that next month in “Money, Sex and Love”

20. So has a business partnership with CareerBuilder.com, which serves as the exclusive provider of job listings and services to CNN.com. And CareerBuilder.com is here today to bring us the news that thanks to a survey they gave on their own website, they’re here to give us facts. Real facts about all kinds of people. 

Nearly one in four (24 percent) working dads feel work is negatively impacting their relationship with their children. Forty-eight percent have missed a significant event in their child's life due to work at least once in the last year and nearly one in five (18 percent) have missed four or more.

What does this have to do with wage gap? Nothing. It’s a sob story about how fathers choose their work over their families. Sounds like Goku/Vegeta to me. This isn’t as tagged “husbands are cool with wives making more/all the money” this is “dads want to be with their kids”. Not the same not even related topic.

21. To be honest, this is the least intellectually boring article to date. And why? Because it’s actually psychology and feminism. Two things right up my alley. While the average guy reader of the article will shout “Yeah! Women don’t support us enough to be full-time dads!” It’s actually a layer or two deeper than that.

The idea that Mother Knows Best for all things home and family is deeply ingrained and complicated by gender roles, socialization and culture, experts say.

This is probably a great time to mention that being a woman  ≠ feminist. Being a woman doesn’t make you impervious to believing in sexism, racism, ableism or anything else. So if you hear anyone, be they man, woman, gender-nonconforming, whoever: never accept that a group can be better parents than another group. Individuals over other individuals, but there is nothing inherent to parenting. if you dare bring up that “but yung gurls like 2 play with dolls” shit I’m going to laugh, ‘cause that’s just proof that they needed practice very likely a sign of socialization and culture. 

"There are a lot of pressures that keep reinforcing the division of responsibility in parenting that leaves moms in the control position — the 'expert parent' role," says demographer Catherine Kenney of Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio, who has studied how mothers' beliefs affect fathers' involvement.

What?! Spouses who are also women who uphold conservative/”traditional”/bullshit gender & parenting roles are likely to have an effect on how their spouses rear the children? This almost sounds like if the any parent is sexist, it can affect how their kids are raised =o

New research into the idea of "maternal gatekeeping" shows how attitudes and actions by the mother may promote or impede father involvement.

Wait, after shoving the idea that “motherhood” was their primary goal in life through music/movies/books/musicals/plays, after making them leave their jobs (without any maternity leave in the U.S.) you suddenly feel it novelty that women internalized the idea that the beliefs of women as “natural” caretakers will have an impact on the spouse’s involvement? 

Unsurprisingly, the rest of this almost-delightful article just says “be a good father or be a good mother. Talk about sharing responsibilities with your spouse and avoiding falling back on social stereotypes that may prevent you from fulfilling your sincere family”.

23. Yikes, a more boring and less interesting rehash of blogger (4). Only talks about the non peer review book in which nothing more than speculation on numbers. Sure, the guy who wrote the book is a doctor, but that’s a PhD in education. Not exactly the pertinent field at hand.

24. Huh, so another article which says women are just as math-smart but a combination of social factors just fuck them over in life but as the scope of the article was about professors and we earlier covered that less 31% of people from the U.S. have bachelors. What else did we cover earlier? Uninviting workplace cultures focused on gender stereotypes are likely to have higher turnover rates or disinterest? Almost sounds like social factors are producing gender disparities.

25. I’m just going to leave this here ‘cause it’s maybe not a STEM problem at the bachelor’s level but it’s certainly an ET problem.

What exactly do you want to know?

So I'm kind of doing a site based project, I've been going to Salisbury on Site visits, looking at the novichok event, but also Salisbury in its wider history and things. And I've been interested in the earth side of the event and what does the earth know of the event. I'm interested in finding out a more geological kind of perspective because I don't really know much about geology.

So the geology of Salisbury is quite simple, not very complicated really. It's a bit ... load of the upper levels of the chalk and into that you've got carved, you know all these river valleys ... and then during the ice age they got filled up with gravel, you know washed in when all the ice was melting and things like that, and because the sea level kept changing up and down, you get these river terraces, you got gravel, and you probably know about Salisbury cathedral being on a load of gravel and that's why its still standing. *laughs* so that's kind of the geology. So I can do that for you, but im not sure... So during the ice age you had ancient man living by the rivers as you probably know as well and they found various bits and bobs in these valley gravels . So it has a long long history . and then you get to you know since the ice age you get things startin of with palaeolithic peopel and then you get the stone age bronze age and then the iron age and the romans , all that, and it just goes on, we're in a tiny fraction of that.

Yeah. Well its cos people cant kind of conceive, of the timescales involved. You know what i mean hundreds of millions of years and I realise that whats going on now is in a greater scheme of things.

And you can't really define these periods until afterwards. I mean that's what's so stupid about the Anthropocene I think. Until afterwards, i mean when we're all dead, when we're not here any more, then you can start looking at the consequences of it. But looking over 150 years of it or whatever it is they're on about , its so stupid. Um. so thats my view on the Anthropocene, I've no time for it. But people love to get on the latest bandwagon. And as it happens, Ive just - i've almost finished a book on cosmology, dont even ask why. Well its because my husband got it, its to do with climate change and this ... the problem is, you can't really see the wood through the trees with all the political angles. And the media, and politicians, they've had a hugely successful campaign over the last 10 or more years, convincing everybody that carbon dioxide is the main driver of climate change, and I'm sorry but that's simply not true.

What would you say it is?

It's um, cosmic rays. Because i've just read this book i can tell you this otherwise id have forgotten. *laughs*. Umm its called the chilling stars. It's really good actually ,I got it on amazon. Its by a man caled nigel calder who i think is now dead , he is one of the founding memebers of new scientist. and somebody called Svensmark who is a dane, nd he is a sort of cosmic ray expert if there is such a thing *laughs*. and hes dealing in hundreds of millions of years. And with the sun, you're probably too young for the monty python song, we're travelling around the planet which is revolving 2000 miles around the sun. And we are travelling through the milky way, the sun, the planets, everything. And he has managed to sort of link ice ages and hot times, cos you're probably aware that sometimes there's no ice at the poles at all to the number of cosmic rays. so the bottom line is the more cosmic rays the colder it gets. But I think that's really interesting. God knows how they do it but um, I think it kind of puts everything into perspective. but the general kind of aim is to link the geological variations in climate and stuff, to where we were in the planet ring at that time. He says carbon dioxide may have an effect, but it's tiny. I know they keep rabbiting on about there being too much but you're talking about a tiny tiny thing yet we've been bombarded by these particles through space all the time. And it can just come from teh sum but the sun he thinks is quite minor but these cosmic rays they come from exploding galaxies in the milky way. its mind boggling, but anyway i've been quite inspired by this book an dit just puts the whole thing into perspective.

So - in geology is there ever any sense of prediction and the future or is it always based in the past?

If you can do any prediction, its to do with cycles, in the sun you probably know about these sunspot cycles. And there are loads of cycles. I cant-- oh dear. Um. I mean one is to do with the rotation of the earth on its axis - it wobbles, like a spinning top. Um, and thats called the malankovitch cycle. And that means that the earth gets warmer and colder depending on how it goes round the sun, because its like wobbling, i can't even remember now. all these cycles superimposed upon each other which affects our climate. We're just in a -- so you can predict according to where we are on these cycles, and this is all done by mathematicians, cosmologist, physicsts... But there are cycles, yes. But because we are dealing in hundreds of thousands of milions of years and things.. predicting the future,,... I mean you probably wont remember... but i remember in 1970...you probably weren't alive... in 1970 the media was going on about whether there was going to be the next ice age, is coming. this is partly why i'm so cynical, i mean i'm 70 years old, i remember this when everybody was fretting about the ice age, and now they're fretting about it getting hot. I mean if you ask me bring it on! I just don't like being cold. And i don't think , well we'll see, time will tell, but I'll probably be dead. but i dont believe any of it really. i think maybe we are getting half a degree hotter, but you've got to remember with computers. all this hype is based on computer models, and nothing has changed with that, if you dont put all the facts in you dont get all the stuff out. And its worth remembering that, and climate science is hugely complicated, and according to the people like this chilling stars book, they're just not putting the right - theyre not putting the right stuff in cos half of it is barely known. so youre basing all this hype on computer models, and weve only got climate records from the past 150 years which is like nothing! and so i could go on for ages about hte fact climate change is just like normal! and we shouldn't worry about it,. And we dont need to plant loads of geranium plants

Do you mean we shouldnt worry about it in the kind of grand scheme about the earth existing?

In the grand scheme of things, my view on this has always been, since it started, is that if it makes us more environmentally friendly that is good. so maybe you need al the hype maybe you need to make people change their ways. I mean we're awful, people on the whole. They just don't care. So - yes - while i might be cynical about the whole thing, if it does make people more, and i think it has, people are recycling stuff and people arent throwing plastic in the sea.

  Workcrew immediately for incompletion of the run is common for new kids and previous strugglers. Workcrew is named so because it makes u do nothing because u cant do something so instead of WORKing on something because u suck at that you literally work doing nothing. You have to work to keep yourself entertained. Work to keep yourself from going insane looking at that orange peel textured wall. Yikes. work to not fucking freeze too jesus fucking christ fuck whoever controlled the thermostat. just saying. Sure they didnt know or didnt care but fuck them for that. anyway. After the run you come inside go back to ur room if ur not on workcrew you chill for a few minutes while the chef is done cooking for the entire facility. Obvisouly being on wprl crew You dont eat whatever everyone else eats they work they get reward u no work no reward. oats and water and those fucking goddamn apples. fuck They're probably eating some kickass breakfest burrito or A nice blue berry muffin with yogurt. actually I know and still know the food schedule for breakfest and lunch for everyday of the week. It hardly change and very slightly if ever. So i knew what I could've been eating worst part about it is they eat literally inches from you. Your back facing them listening to them eat and salvate smelling all the condiments and fresh bacon. Waiting patiently for all the other students to finish their meals and wash their dishwear and go to their rooms only after do they. Give you your W/C meal. Oats and water fuck me. The worst part about it was after awhile I got so skinny that parker had me start eating a bowl of oatmeal with every meal this is when i was doing decently well but still being full of shit just not as much. But the worst part was I got 2 bowls of it while all other w/c got 1 And i started to even like it. Almost as if my taste buds had adapted over awhile to enjoy the oats. fuck those apples tho sometimes they were a 3 out of 10. best compliment I can give there sorry not sorry. anyway eat ur meal. its time for group. Group is when the entire facility all families and w/c and parker the director sit down commonly in a circle with parker in a chair and the students on the floor but before I left They had been consistently all in the life timechairs except parker who stood at the front of the main room with the students in a movie theatur like fashion without the leveled tiers obviously. but in order of w/c to family 1-5 so work crew being at the very front right feet from parker. During group we would review issues regarding anything and i mean anything wrong with the facility or the students and staff inside of it. It is encouraged and heavily peer supported to tell on each other and to work on themselves and not let anybody even other students or roomates get in your way. WORK ON YOURSELF by Sourrounding yourself with people on the same mission as you and who do the things to suggest they are going to continue to stay on that mission was a huge message that was pushed in a variety of ways at liahona. through team building exercises, group discussion and definitely confrontation. It is common for students to lash out when they're new. Probably cause they're from California and think these motherfuckers cant do shit to me im a minor. Think again, welcome to Southern buttfuck nowhere Literally sand mountains mars-looking Hurricane Utah. Body slam ur bitchass for acing outta line. Talking back blatent disrespect and obviously anything suggesting possilbe physical or verbal outbreak resulted in a restaint. Most staff would warn u like chill out orim gonna put u on the ground. And you'd get in trouble just for that. Sometimes even a little more secretly I think for not following through. but maybe not considering its a change in behavior. im sure it could be situational. Regardless. back to the story. group typically lasted an hour or so sometimes would watch a documentary afterwards sometimes even a movie however those became quite rare as the students or cycle in. Called generations of students. I was the last of my generation for a good amount of time towards the end of my stay at liahona. Depressing very much so. Watching people who go there a year after u graduate before you. U began to believe those insecurities more and more. and if you have struggle throughout your life with putting negative energy in the universe in the form of speech by conversion of energy to your body which is apart of the universe. i know alittle hard to follow but bear with me and try your best. After group you'd either get on or off of work crew based on how well u did at nothing and the little something u do such as workouts the morning run how u address staff members how even how frequent you use the bathroom to see if ur trying to get up. What was cool at Liahona was doing what you were told. being obiedient at all times immediately and when you do fuck up take the mistake and turn it into success instead of letting it slow you down as a failure. With such a poor mindset at Liahona especially towards the middle of my stay. I stayed at level 1 for 16 months. Probably a record not really a bragging thing tho. The point is I sucked at being a normal ass human. Full of attitude and was disobiedent with little to no respect given off the bat to any adult. Like I was the shit... When you're the shit you don't have the same problems that people who arent the shit have correct. So tying all the way back to the hospital metaphor with my secret broken leg. Honestly was probably secret to me as receiving the injuries throughout critical young developmental stages. I had alot of problems being honest because I was the shit and the shit wasnt supposed to be doing all this disgusting and sad. self demeaning outragous nasty stuff. thats all im gonna say. currently. im not ready to open up about my full past for i feel currently it lays at rest where it belongs until decieded otherwise by me. Now.. where were me. I was the shit. after coming out with stuff half assed in anattempt to still look kinda like the shit. they caught me on my bullshit and I spilled the beans. No longer was I the shit. I was shit. They broke me down emotionally. Making me write my story over and over again my entire life all the things I had ever done wrong. Each time I either came out with something new or changed something becasue everything I told my therapist was true but skewed and I lost track of my story. I had fucked myself and they gave me the rope to do it because they wanted me to earn my coniquences no have them given to me based on a hunch. I fucked myself. and unfortunately it was just he beginning for my emotional workouts. For the next two years. I trecked on. Fast forward july 2016 Im level 4 shadowing a new student with a level 3. us three since we are shadowing can talk in the room about rules only and how to teach them. while having our responsibilities with the quote aswell. at this point I could memorize anything. Memorized some crazy shit honestly wish that the content of the quote was more useful in a sense of remembering important things. or things that are commonly remembered by some idk. the point is we were aloud to talk about rules only. this didnt stay over time after me doing well getting to level fucking 4 this was huge for me and I had gotten comfortable and complacent in my position halting any further actions towards bettering myself everyday. exactly what they don't want you to do. We ended up flying our shadow solo which means hes a level one and we cant talk to him anymore and its cbo. basically hes in the big leagues now. But the level 3 and the other roommate who wasnt aloud to talk but was in the room while we shadowed the new student literally everyday for a month or two. And we all started breaking CBO together. basically we literally talked. about any and everything. Eventually getting comfortable doing that after a week or so couldnt have been too much longer than a week or two before guess who our same shadowed new student turns us in... Just like we had taught him to do. He was rewarded heavily. This was 1 july 2016. the 4th was parkers fav holiday does a shit ton of fun shit for everybody and everybody can talk water balloon fights watermelon eating contest hot dogs play basketball freely. fucking board games bro straight up. I had been at Liahona at this time for 2 about to be 3 Fourth of julys at Liahona and they just got better and better problem was I spent all 3 on work crew. top that off I spent all of July and into August on workcrew. It started off as suicide watch run risk and do nothing. literally as worse at it got. You can use the bathroom and sit in this chair. and you can sleep on this mattress with the fans and AC on with no blankets or pillows. So It stayed like that for  a week. Miserable completely miserable. I had finally started doing well got to level fucking four and im on work crew do nothing sui watch run risk and Ive been here for two years sleeping in the commons with no blanket or pillows shivering. Ill still never forget that day parker said I could choose to have a blanket or a pillow. FUCK U THINK? blanket. ez. I was literally giggling with joy that night under its warmth. That whole month slowly and slowly got increasingly easier on work crew and I didnt know why I was even still on It'd been a fucking month this was august 1st. The next day august 2nd 2016 Parker comes in and tells me im finally leaving. This was a really big day for me and brings to me currently some very strong emotions of relief and regret. For I hadn't completely wasted my time at Liahona but then again I typically in the past back then never completed anything. And honestly that is one of my bullshit things that I say to myself. and still have some belief in for good reason to gain perspective from it. Because unfortunately there are things in this world that are bad but also true. Thats just the way things work. There is good in bad and bad in good always. It may be hard to find or the pros out weigh the cons or vice versa. I see the bad, me not taking very good advantage at all of what Liahona had to offer for me at all times. However still gaining from it which is good aswell of course. But the bad being I did waste alot of my time. Now am I completely to blame for the duration of my time there. Yes because I made the decisions that led to me having to be there longer. honestly cause I needed to be there longer. Maybe a slight tiny bit of blame on my father for neglect to anextent of course when it came to life rules and making sure I know and remember them. But at the end of the day I kept myself on the wall and I have taken responsibility and if I havent i will now. I fucked up at liahona and I caused myself to be there for aslong as I was obviously not intentionally but for some reason. Cause I hated myself and nobody felt bad for me. I nolonger desire that attention. Because I know that If that attention is given to me in the quantity desired and by the form of attention inwhich idesired. Would inturn keep me immature as im hiding and nesting away from my feelings rather than pour them out and release the hate and sadness because its no good. it does no good besides grant perspective both to yourself and others. I never brag about giving to the homeless. Truly the reason I bring it up is because I may not have been homeless for very long or hadn't been homeless without atleast a couch or a garage to sleep in. But after enduring just that water down verison of being homeless. I know they need that damn money more than I do. Im not going to be unreasonable and give him everything I have on my card. but typically I give them at the minimum a cig if they want one and a conversation just cause people need to talk to people. whether they're drunk or not sad or happy talking turns our feelings into reality based on what you desire long term and short term almost combined in a way. You can switch up long term desires such as careers and lifestyles however it is not recommended. However also if you are still in a somewhat content mindset settling for like85 percent full on ur content scale. And this is what you need a little change up. Then by all means switch but keep the short term desires because those need to work first. Before you even decide what you want from life and ur existance ask yourself am I happy? If you are not atleast somewhat content with who you are an individual currently. You need to follow what I told you earlier. You need to dig deep in your heart and soul and mind. Focus on the center of your chest. thats where i feel my soul communicate to me. And i search it with my mind sending inquizitive thoughts to it for its response. Your body is a rosetta stone in a way for literal human communication (speech) and the vibrations of the universe. And vice versa. your body picks up things from the universe and world that it tells u. Maybe gut feelings? Hunches? A strong feeling for no reason??? EVERYTHING HAS A REASON. And if it isn't this than prove it to me. It proves itself and you can try it for yourself. Find contentment in your preplanned manifestation that we call "The Universe" by recognizing both your current insignificance in the real world possibly currently or maybe never; never in your mind atleast. But also your significance in how much control you have just because of what fucking species you are and all the things you can learn. Know you have significance because this is your world and you already chose how your life is going to end. What will last for you what won't. Because somebody (you u idiot) set it up to happen that way. Say you think im full of shit and just crazy. Let me ask you.... Im not worried about why because Its impossible and highly unlikely that the reason presents itself so early.
