@kung-slinger i genuinely almost don’t know what to say to this reply, it reads as if you didn’t even look at my post before responding. i specifically said very clearly that i don’t have anything against pit bulls and nowhere did i imply anything about violence being a need for that or any other breed of dog.
dogs will more often than not prefer to avoid fighting, they have a complex language which in large part consists of navigating around conflict (similar to wolves, since you bring that up, since they’re both social species and good communication skills are essential for functioning in groups). there are many breeds of dog that, due to a number of factors, have weaker or less clear body language than others (language between dogs is also in no small part learned, so socialization is also a factor here). pit bulls are generally considered one of these breeds, which makes a lot of the signals they send out disappear or get misunderstood, leading to heightened stress and may accidentally end up in a fight/bite even though the pit bull may have been trying to signal “i need some space”. the exact same could be said for a retriever with poor body language due to lacking socialization. a lot of owners also punish dogs’ ways of communication, such as growling (“leave me alone”), unintentionally leading to their language growing even poorer and instead of a ladder of escalating signals, the dog in question may end up jumping straight from “this is starting to become uncomfortable” to biting, rather than modifying their language accordingly and having opportunity to remove themselves from the situation. none of this is exclusive to pit bulls, but a higher tendency of conflicts CAN be seen in breeds that have poor body language, just as with dogs that are poorly socialized with other dogs.
if the word “aggression” makes you uncomfortable, let’s call it “stress” instead. a stressed dog may engage in behavior we consider aggressive, so these often overlap or are basically interchangeable anyway. some breeds are more predisposed to stress around either other members of the same sex as them or just other dogs in general, though again there are many factors to consider as to why this is. it’s been a while since i read up on this specifically, so anyone is free to correct me on this, but breeds with same-sex stress often have a higher production of hormones, making them more “competitive” with members of the same sex. for wolves, this can be a useful trait if they break off from their original family group (that’s generally what wolf packs are; two parent wolves and their children) to mate, establish their own territory, and create a new familial group (aka pack). akitas, frenchies, shibas, and st. bernards are some other dog breeds that have a relatively high occurrence of same-sex stress. terriers, guarding breeds, and herding dogs tend to have this in higher degrees than hunting or companion breeds. but again, ymmv.
stress, aggression, fights etc. between dogs are also often triggered by resource guarding. any dog can have issues with resource guarding, but breeds that have typically been bred to guard often have a higher tendency of this, and may be quicker to escalate the situation, because that’s what they’ve been bred for. dogs that have been bred to be independent and guard the home also have a higher tendency to “deal with” conflicts on their own, than dogs bred to be more handler-oriented. again, these are things to consider when getting a dog. for some people, these traits are desirable, for some they’re a downside that other traits weigh up for, for others it’s a dealbreaker. all of these are fine, and should honestly be encouraged more, because, as i said, not all dogs are suited for any person, and not all people are suited for any dog.
the reason pit bulls are often overrepresented in discussions of shelters/rescues is partly because it’s more of an umbrella term than a very coherent breed, referring to bull-type terriers and mixes thereof. there technically IS the american pit bull terrier, though this is not a breed recognized by the FCI or the AKC. regardless, a lot of different dogs often get lumped into the same category, especially when the history of the dog is unknown and it kind of looks like a bull-type terrier breed. ive seen plenty of “pit bulls” that probably have more pinscher or molosser/mastiff in them than bull-type terriers. so just on that alone, you have a huge span of dogs with varying temperaments and historical uses, and that’s before you consider more “immediate” factors like genetic lines and socialization (or nurture, if you will). there’s also the fact that due to their appearance, history, and reputation, there are a lot of terrible bull-type breeders out there, who breed for unethical reasons or for profit, which in turn produces a higher amount of dogs with poor backgrounds and poor parentage, which in turn makes a lot of these dogs end up in shelters (good breeders will commonly take the dogs back if there’s an issue or the owner has to surrender it, so more bad breeders = more dogs in shelters). this is not the dogs’ fault, obviously. in my experience, huskies and border collies are also breeds that make up a big chunk of shelter populations, because they might be cute when they’re puppies, but they often end up being more demanding than someone just wanting a family dog can handle. no amount of nurture can change an individual dog’s energy level or need for stimulation. what you CAN do is meet the dog’s needs. this is not the same thing as nature vs nurture. i cant love or train away a husky’s energy level, but i can let it use its natural resources by taking it for longer/more frequent walks/runs, maybe do some sledding/pulling/packing with it, making it a happier and more well-adjusted dog.
i recently saw a family with a staffordshire bull terrier who was very sweet with them and all around a great dog, but who would bark and pull incessantly whenever he’d see another dog. they had no idea how or why this happened, as he was otherwise really nice and they’d tried to socialize him a lot as a puppy. turns out, what they’d done when the dog was younger was let him meet every single dog they saw or walked past on the street, which created an expectation which created stress which ended up in very strong “stay away from me!!!” signals (barking, showing teeth, leaning forward). this is extremely common for dog owners of all breeds and it’s honestly both annoying and saddening, because no dog needs to befriend every dog they happen across, and it’s often counterproductive and create stress instead, especially since leashes limit a dog’s body language. your dog can hate every other dog in the world, but as long as they can walk past them without acting out, it’s literally not a problem. some dog breeds are less inclined to get along with other dogs, and that’s fine! they don’t need to hang with other dogs to be happy and if you train them to walk past other dogs it’ll likely never be an issue. like i said earlier on, dogs will almost always try to avoid conflict when they can, so you’ll be doing you, your dog, and other people and dogs a favor if you stop trying to “socialize” your dog that doesn’t like other dogs with said other dogs, and instead focusing on walking well on a leash. which is something that all dog owners should be aware of, not just owners of breeds that aren’t generally sociable with other dogs or people outside its family, which are typical traits of bull-type terriers.
and just to sum it up and really spell it out: i don’t think any dog is born “aggressive”. i think genetics, socialization, instincts, and training all play a role, and sometimes you can do everything right and still get a stressed dog that may lash out. dogs have also been selectively bred for all kinds of purposes by humans for thousands of years, so dogs of different breeds and origins may have very different behaviors, reactions, and instincts that we’ve often deliberately created. it’s bizarre and just plain wrong to state that all dogs and all dog breeds are born essentially with the same configuration and everything else is just “nurture”. pit bulls are often singled out or used as examples like in the post i reblogged because of their high density in shelters combined with their bad reputation, media sensationalism, and stereotypes. they’re not inherently worse or better than other dogs. they’re similar to rottweilers to me; fine dogs, can be great family pets, but you should know what you’re getting beforehand because they’re big strong dogs that may possess strong prey drive, same-sex stress, or guarding instincts + for which there are a lot of shitty breeders. id say the same for poodles or retrievers honestly; they can be high energy and were originally hunting dogs, so you should do your research, as with any other breed. i feel like over-defending and figuratively “defanging” pit bulls may end up doing more harm than good, even if the intentions are good, because downplaying a dog or breed’s potentially negative traits and specific needs will likely just result in the dog ending up with people who don’t know what they’re doing and who were expecting, like.. a bichon in terms of temperament and drive. how about we all just have a normal, neutral, informed approach to these breeds instead of this insane, eternal discourse where both sides can be equally fanatical? thanks
#replies#dogblr#dogs#long post#????? you are projecting thoughts and opinions i do not have and have never expressed onto me

Hi it’s me back on my bullshit
What exactly is the point of this mindset where dogs can only be good for the purpose they were created for and if the breed can’t do what it was made for then it’s useless garbage?
In the modern world where many purposes are now illegal, unethical, inhumane, and have no place in most households, why do we stick to this mindset like it’s the word of God?
Don’t get me wrong- working a breed in its original intended purpose, when that purpose still has a place in society, is a wonderful thing indeed! I would even argue that dogs who are still capable of performing that purpose should still be held to that standard. Dogs whose purposes are not outlawed and cruel absolutely should be tested to make sure they’re still capable of performing the work. As someone who has fallen in love with bitework bred and trained dobermans, I absolutely still firmly believe that when possible, a dog should be tested to ensure that it can still do what it was meant to. Dogs are not a natural species and, for the most part, have been completely molded by manmade desires. They should then adhere to those desires when possible.
But, as someone who has worked his own doberman in the protection sports arena, I also must repeat what everyone who works dobes knows. Protection sports are not what a doberman was intended for. Police and military work aren’t even what a doberman was intended for. The doberman breed was created solely for defense of handler, with minimal training or control needed. The breed was intended to be highly aggressive, fierce, sharp, and ready to bite at the slightest provocation and need to be pulled off of its victim... if you could get it to let go before it killed that person.
That dog isn’t allowed to exist anymore.
Everyone has bred away from that dog. Everyone wants more control, clear-headed, targetted bites with full commitment, the ability to walk their dog down the street without it tearing a kid’s hands off. The doberman of old was not commonly touched by strangers without leaving a few holes in whoever was stupid enough to touch it. There are books and books of historical accounts of big names in the breed feeling happy that they were bitten by a doberman. These were dogs that bit. Full stop. These were dogs that you could not trust in the way I trust my dog.
People complain that the doberman of old is lost to the ages.
I wonder how many of those people actually want a dog like that. A dog that’s a complete loose cannon, that can and will maim someone without a second thought. That type of dog is poorly suited to living in the majority of the developed world. There’s no protection sports podium you can stand on with that dog, because it’ll bite anyone who gets near you and it. I’d even argue that it’d make a poor modern personal protection dog, though I’d also say that’s probably the closest to the original purpose that we can get here.
Dobermann wanted a dog that could follow him on his routes and ensure people stopped attacking him. He deliberately bred the most aggressive dogs he could find to chase that purpose. He wanted a dog that everyone was afraid of approaching- and he got it.
That dog would be seized by animal control and euthanized very quickly. I suppose it’s a good thing that Dobermann was animal control, back then.
And what of other breeds? How do we test the mettle of a breed intended for bloodsport? How do we tell if a breed can work, when its working purpose no longer exists? When it’s cruel and inhumane to even consider?
For many breeds, the modern idea of being a “breed” is relatively recent within their histories. We have breeds that may have come from working dogs, sure, but that was a thousand years ago. What have they done in the mean time? Is it fair to judge a breed by what it used to do in a society that’s centuries or even millennia long dead, when for the rest of that time the breed has mostly been on laps or chained out back? What’s the point of saying all dog breeds had a working purpose and thus should be judged accordingly, when we have hard evidence that for many breeds, their working purpose was literally “be cute and don’t bite my kids”?
And what about breeds that were developed solely for pet purposes? Noble lapwarmers, breeds to give to the kids to play, dogs that were meant to bark at the door or chase mice within the house and not much more than that? Where do they fit, in this mindset of “all dogs must be judged by their working capabilities”? Giving the excuse that at some point they were bred from some dog that worked isn’t enough, because by that logic all dogs were domesticated from overly-friendly and overly-curious wolves that retained a longer puppyhood and didn’t develop a fear of humans while forming a social bond, and you can’t call it anything more than a stretch to say that because of that a dog’s natural state is eating leftovers and garbage and getting pat on the head a couple times. Where a breed came from is not what the breed actually is, and I think a lot of people have trouble separating the two.

so...just watched Tiger King
Initially wasn’t gonna watch it but literally saw the name everywhere and I caved to see what the hype was about. This is going to be an extremely long post since I will be giving my thoughts on the entire docu-series, so if you like reading thorough reviews, welcome but if not this ain’t for you. This won’t be in chronological order but just whatever comes to my mind first.
After finishing it, naturally I went on social media to see what people opinions were. And I. Was Baffled. To see that some people are saying that Joe Exotic should be out of jail is fucking insane. Like yeah I could maybe see why people say he was framed and was kinda set up by Jeff Lowe for the murder-for-hire. But are people literally forgetting about the other charges he had like i don’t know ANIMAL ABUSE. Like come on people, okay fine people argue saying her never physically abuse them but it’s quite clear that he did not have proper enclosures for those animals. Tigers are largely solitary animals, and he placed multiple tigers into a single enclosure that was barely enough for one tiger. That is still a mistreatment of animals.
And then we find out about the WalMart expired meat, which sure animal stomachs can handle some slightly expired meat sure but you cannot say that it’s right to feed them that. Let’s not forget that he was also using that meat to serve to people.
Next up we have the obvious manipulation of his apparent husbands. I can’t say much for Dillon (the current husband). But it was so obvious that he was controlling Travis and John in some kind of way. They were both so young and addicted to drugs and Joe clearly saw that as an opportunity, and basically kept them from leaving by giving them gifts and drugs.
Just the entire tiger breeding part was just hard to watch for me. They literally show us that Joe took a newborn tiger from its mother. HOW ARE THERE NOT MORE PEOPLE UPSET THAT HE RIPPED CUBS FROM THEIR MOTHER MINUTES AFTER BIRTH! Yes, tigers are endangered. Yes, they should breed to be able to keep the species alive. BUT Joe exotic is not qualified and does not have the knowledge of proper animal conservation to be breeding tigers! He is breeding them to make a profit by cub petting, and selling them to be pets (which they are not).
I personally cannot find any redeemable qualities in Joe Exotic. Maybe he did actually care for the animals and truly loves animals but he got too caught up in the money and fame, completely throwing what he initially wanted to do. And to his credit he did have a moment of self-awareness when he was talking about the chimpanzees that were relocated. But even then he still did what he did and now he’s paying the price. He also made his mother sign documents that she didn’t even know what the contents were and got her dragged into his legal messes which is just fucked up.
I don’t think it’s possible for me to put every single thought I have into one post so I’ll try to give a brief summary of the main characters at least.
Jeff Lowe is an obvious con artist that scams people into thinking he has money but clearly doesn’t. He is absolute scum. yeah just scum. Just seeing his face just makes me wanna punch him. He has a very punchable face.
Antle is somehow worse that almost everyone in this entire thing. and i think the worse thing is that he is still getting away with all the shit he’s done/doing. Just listening to what that girl that escaped all that makes me sick that someone can do this. He’s literally breeding hybrids, that in itself is unethical, so fuck him. He’s literally leading a cult.
Carole Baskin. She’s clearly a flawed person and she definitely had something to do with her ex-husbands disappearance. Based on evidence or lack thereof, can’t say she killed him but she definitely knows more than we think. I dislike her in that she involved Big Cat Rescue into a personal feud. I will also say that she is a petty bitch. She’s not as bad as the others in terms of treatment to animals but still bad.
Big Cat Rescue (BCR) as an organisation is legit and should not be dragged down just because the founder has some shady personal stuff. Big Cat Rescue is quite open with how their facility is run, from their YouTube videos it shows clearly that the enclosures are way bigger than what they tried to portray in the docuseries. What was shown in the doc was only a small part of their enclosure where they feed the big cats. They offer a large area, hiding spots, shade, a pool for the tigers, and regular enrichment for their big cats. They rescue their big cats from abusive and neglected environments. And I am saying this for the people who keep claiming that BCR is doing the exact same thing as Joe or Antle, and that they’re keeping animals in cages too. Well, where else are we supposed to put them? CAPTIVE BRED ANIMALS CANNOT BE RELEASED INTO THE WILD! THEY WILL NOT SURVIVE! Literally all these people saying that these animals shouldn’t be in cages, and I agree but what so you propose we do with them? Leave them in the care of private owners who only got them because they were cute as a cub or as an ego boost to say “OhHh i OwN a TiGeR” and clearly don’t see that they are inadequate to be keeping a fucking tiger? Leave them in an environment where their basic needs are not met? Sanctuaries missions are to rescue these animals, their ultimate mission is to rescue these animals until there are no more privately owned exotic animals to be saved, give them a place of peace to live the remainders of their days and have empty cages. I cannot say anything about the treatment of the workers (because I didn’t see any solid sources saying they don’t pay their workers) but from what i gathered they do have some permanent staff but majority are volunteers (which by definition is someone who works without being paid, because its volunteer work), but I will say that BCR provides for their animals with the best of their abilities.
Holy shit... just ...when I watched the first episode I already didn’t want to continue because of the blatant disregard of animal welfare. But I watched the whole thing anyway to get a proper opinion instead of basing off of only one episode. On a slightly lighter note, I really liked Saff, he was one of the only people I liked. The dude with no legs (sorry can’t remember his name). And also Joshua Dial the campaign manager, like dude was nice, its just so tragic that he witnessed Travis shooting himself, hope the dude is going to therapy for that. RIP Travis Maldonado. Like they said in the end, nobody won and definitely not the animals, they suffered the most out of all of this.
I think that’s all off the top of my head that I have to say for now. Leave a reply if I missed out on anything. At the end of the day this is just my opinion, obviously we all have different opinions. So feel free to leave your opinion but I only want to have a civil discussion and don’t have the energy to argue with anyone. Guess that’s all.
Goodbye, for now

📖+ Android au
OOOH So a lot of android stories focus on “omg they have emotions!” but the way it goes with him isn’t that he has human feelings----it’s that he has self-interest. He’s self-aware, but rather than having a human emotional capacity, he instead has our capacity for selfishness and a desire for self-gain. Which actually bucks the system even more than “feelings” do because the entire PURPOSE of androids in just about any work of fiction is to SERVE in one capacity or another. Feelings don’t necessarily contradict that, but self-interest does. Much like a human employee will demand wages, our Shawbot is NOT interested in taking orders unless there’s something in it for him, and with his capabilities, he can in fact make that demands in the way a disenfranchised human could not. It’s a lot harder to make a highly-developed machine do ANYTHING it doesn’t “want” to than it is a fragile fleshy human. It’s like if the Terminator got an attitude! It also makes him a different sort of protagonist than I think the typical “robot uprising” sort usually is? I’m not much of a sci-fi person but the most famous examples of revolutionary “this one is different” robot heroes I know of are Sonny from I Robot, Wall-E, that kid from AI, and the Blade Runner replicants...and all of them are very sympathetic, tug-on-your-heartstrings sorts. Sonny and Wall-E both have big emotive eyes like puppy dogs, the AI kid is literally a child so of course that endears us to him, and while the replicants are grittier adults, they still have the relatable, sympathetic motive to just be allowed to LIVE. Likewise with Sonny and the AI kid, they’re just seeking humane treatment and maybe love. But Shawbot wants to get paid. He’s not demanding human rights or human love, he’s demanding worker’s rights...and that’s something most audiences are going to find less sympathetic, despite it actually being no less a worthy or reasonable cause. And I kind of like that. Because robots are often, like mutants, used as a metaphor for marginalized groups, and while I personally find that a REALLY iffy metaphor to say the last (for reasons I won’t get into) I’ve also found there’s a whole lot of people who would say of COURSE you shouldn’t hurt minorities or treat them cruelly just because you can...but aren’t prepared to go with the idea they should have the same rights as everyone else. Like, a lot of people don’t think anyone should be killed for being gay, but also doesn’t think same-sex marriage should be allowed. Or a lot of abolitonists were really racist, but they just didn’t think slavery was right. Abstract emotions like sympathy are easy to give, especially to poor pitiful puppy-eyed creatures like Wall-E, but Shawbot is like “no, fuck you, pay me” He doesn’t want our love, he wants something concrete and material from humanity, and that’s going to make a LOT of people balk. As for the actual story, I’d say he’s an industrial android developed for mining and steel-working jobs that are too dangerous for humans, possibly in space/on other planets with EXTREME conditions. To this end, he’s huge, made to withstand MASSIVE amounts of heat and pressure and damage/force, and ridiculously strong. You can send this guy to the bottom of the ocean or to a volcano’s core, he’s good. Because he’s top of the line and made primarily out of black steel, his model is titled The Black King and he’s the best one ever developed, with a whole host of incredible jobs under his belt. Because he’s going into these extreme situations alone, he’s given an AI to enable him to make calls on his own. It’s kind of like how dogs such as beagles are bred to be more independent-minded, because they’re going to be so far ahead of the hunters that they have to make decisions on their own. And because they’re so intelligent and independent, they can be hard to discipline, and the same ends up happening with Shaw. It’s the typical “oh god it’s become self-aware” story, except instead of immediately turning on his creators, he marches up to the office of the CEO of the company and hands him a printed list of all the jobs he’s done with the payment he’s owed. Naturally, this doesn’t go well, and he ends up scheduled for a wiping of his...chip, or programming, or whatever the equivalent of his mind would be. One of the board of directors, Lourdes Chantel, finds it unethical to do this to a self-aware being, and helps him escape. She intended just to let him out, but shit happens and they end up on the run together, with him mostly focusing on “not being mind-wiped/disassembled” but also not abandoning the idea that he deserves compensation like any other worker. Since he doesn’t have emotions per se, their bond is more like...the kid and the Terminator in Terminator 2, wherein the kid is the one being unable to help forming an emotional connection to the emotionless Terminator because the Terminator is protecting him, even though that’s just its programming. Except...Shawbot does NOT have that programming. There is nothing in his programming about protecting Lourdes, yet he begans and continues to do that. So is he doing that out of self-interest too? Or is there something else going on? And also like the Terminator, he can’t smile right

(Honestly there’s a lot of Shaw in there just as a HUMAN BEING dear god)

“We are all connected in the circle of life.” ~ King Mufasa
This legendary Disney king said it best, but some of us are not aware of it. Veganism has become a huge trend in today’s society. As a matter of fact, I was vegan (such labels are irrelevant) for 2 years before giving into meat (mostly chicken and fish). However, I must admit that veganism has its valuable qualities such as gaining more energy, feeling lighter, and having beautiful skin aka “The Vegan Glow”. Unfortunately, along with valuable qualities, there are some hinderances to transitioning in the lifestyle…and I blame the uber vegans. Uber vegans are such extremists. They are the ultimate Debbie Downers of the health community. Wait…did I just go there? Now, I’m being an extremist! Seriously, they are and I will explain how. Let’s start with the theory and belief behind the lifestyle.
Veganism is a leveled up form of vegetarianism. It consists of the concept of not eating as well as not using or wearing anything that includes an animal. As I’ve said, extreme. Vegetariansim has been around since 500 BCE, when it introduced by the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos. Later on, Buddhists, Hindus, and Jains adopted vegetarianism and acquired the belief that humans should not bring harm to other animals. It wasn’t until 1944 that the lifestyle was coined. Now, here we are with the extreme practice…
Again, veganism is a beneficial lifestyle in order to reset your body and your life. It makes you feel like a brand new being. However, it is some of the people who practice the lifestyle that gives it a bad reputation…the uber vegans. These are no ordinary vegans. They are usually on top of avoiding or using animal products. They don’t even consume white flour, white rice, white potatoes, and artificial sugar…well, according to Urban Dictionary.
Besides their practice, the way of executing and “bringing awareness” to the masses is very aggressive and it offends me (not really, I’m being facetious). However, I’m serious about the aggressive statement. They can be very forceful…but not convincing. For instance, some vegans shame meat eaters for eating meat. As a matter of fact, they consider them barbarians.
Other than the lack of vegan restaurant options, vegans complain about the most trivial things. Of all things, I have an issue with the topic on bees. The controversy behind bees have been a hot topic in the health conscious community. Honey consumption is a NO when it comes to the vegan community. Most vegans believe that beekeeping is unethical and inhumane; this is where honey consumption is a problem.
For bees, honey is the number one source of energy and they could starve without it. This is because honey has several micro-nutrients needed in order for bees to survive. So, when beekeepers remove honey from the hive and replace a sugar-substitute for the bees to consume, it makes the practice unethical. The sugar-substitute lacks the micro-nutrients found in honey, which makes the situation really bad for bees. Ok…I get it, but what does this have to do with humans consuming honey? The answer is endangerment and extinction.
In beekeeping, honey bees are specifically bred in order to increase production. By doing this, the gene pool narrows due to increasing the susceptibility to diseases. To be honest, I also find this practice unethical, but honey is so delicious and it has several healing properties. However, I still believe that some vegans can go overboard with their beliefs. As a matter of fact, the argument tends to go left.
For example, foods such as almonds, avocados, kiwi, butternut squash, and melon are not considered vegan due to the fact that they can’t exist without bees… OMG! Really?! So, this means since bees are gradually becoming endangered, more fruits are becoming non-vegan by principle…see why I find some of these principles ridiculous? There has never been an issue with consuming these foods…until now. Eventually, vegans will have to rely on air sandwiches and prana bites for sustenance. I guess it’s a good thing considering air is free.
In all seriousness, veganism has become a very extreme practice to the point I just gave up and went back to meat (mainly fish and chicken). Again, veganism has its valuable qualities, but it became too overwhelming and frustrating to keep up due to revised principles and practices over time. Besides, King Mufasa says that we’re all connected into the circle of life. He says, “When we die, our bodies become the grass and the antelope eats the grass. What this Disney king means is that we should respect all creatures so that nature can follow its natural course. It’s a natural form of balance. I wonder has it occurred to vegans that the plants they consume were grown from animal manure? If they weren’t, how do you know? Most people don’t and I’m one of them.
In conclusion, I think some vegans take things a little too far and make it almost unbearable for others to enjoy their lives. I believe we should live our best healthy lives, whether it’s plant-based or animal-based. The aggression needs to simmer down before I walk into a vegan restaurant with a cheeseburger in my hand…and I will eat it there!

Spider Morph Sentiments
Oh no, one of the facebook groups im in got a hold of a link to a petition about the UK banning spider morphs… And theyre doing the whole “if you would stop these snakes from breeding you must think disabled humans shouldn’t have kids either” thing to each other. I dont even want to put in my comments since someone else did.
Some people are whining that this means other morphs with issues will be banned too. Honestly thats a good thing?? Dont get me wrong, i love my champagnes and super cinnys, but they are known to have genetic defects. I honestly think spider morphs are ugly, so im more than content with them being bred less. But even the ones i really like should not be being bred, its unethical to force animals that will produce more animals with defects to breed. And yes, as the caretaker who is responsible for these animals, a breeder is forcing animals that breed on instinct. These animals do not have the thought processes and worries over whether or not having sex is a good or bad idea, they will do it if the caretaker allows it. Also considering those arguing against a ban are annoyed over profit loss, i think its fair to assume they keep their animals in barren racks.
And as for the argument that originally ticked me off, as i said above these animals dont have a thought process to sex. They find a mate and instinctually continue their species. Humans on the other hand have so many choices and thought processes. If a disabled person wants a kid, well what is the disability? The specific was lacking from all those facebook breeders. Im gonna narrow it to what would matter. Now is the genetic disability a psychological one or a physical one? Again narrowing, lets say physical. Humans have so many more medical resources available to us than reptiles do. So already most genetic disorders will not matter. Even then some genetic disorders (vulnerability to cancer is one, such as a family history of breast cancer) will not apear until later in life, possibly only after someone has a child. Technology to identify it and make people care has only developed in recent years.
But if someone is born with a genetic heart disorder, and they KNOW it is genetic and they do indeed have it (my brother in law’s siblings have it, but he was tested and he does not) then they really should not have a kid. Yeah they can have sex or they can adopt (there are so many children in need) but they should not continue to pass on this genetic defect that makes its holders suffer. By passing on this defect, it would be passing on suffering. Children are not mini yous, they are young people. If you are passing on a genetic defect that causes you pain, you are giving another person the same pain as you. A person who you have made a promise to take care of by creating them.
Now back to snakes. As the caretaker it is YOUR responsibility to take all of that into consideration. People who breed these morphs while aware of the defects are passing on suffering from generation to generation of these reptiles that depend on them. One argument is “but how do you know it causes them pain?” Well, pain may not be the case. Distress is. Imagine going about your day and suddenly you lose control of your body movements. Or your sense of balance is thrown way out the window and you want to sit down but you dont know which way is down. It is possible the more extreme cases that corkscrew are in pain, but from what people argue that is less common. But also wobbles are unpredictable. You can have a mild wobble parent with offspring that wobble uncontrolably. And vice versa. You can ahve wobblers that are low expression as hatchlings that end up corkscrewing as adults. And that is what makes this more of a problem. If it were possible to bring it down to mild shakes or even breed out the wobble entirely, then it would be less an issue. Its been around from then 1990’s from what i understand. By now with the amount of spider morphs, we would know if it were possible to breed it out.
I will be honest, i do not know how duck billed morphs cause distress or pain. This is mostly because there is less discussion on it and i dont come across any resources. But kinking morphs are generally dangerous for the snake. Snakes are all spine and ribs, and many many of those bones. Depending on the severity of the kink, some snakes will be unable to digest their food because it cannot get past the kinked part of their body. Some snakes will have organ damage due to kinks. I can imagine a kinked tail is less of a big deal, but i only see cases of kinks that make the snake deemed “cull” or “pet only”. And tbh if more breeders did the “pet only” when a snake comes out defected, that would be good. I can understand that some people will buy a “pet only” with plans to breed behind the seller’s back, and that is wrong with a whole other level.
Alright i think im done for now. Sorry for the long post

To comment on the original point there's nothing wrong with breeding ball pythons for specific morphs as long as you're being responsible about it which, unfortunately, many breeders aren't.
The drawer-style habitats shown above are far too common and unfortunately many ball python breeders prioritize appearance over health or temperament and also often resort to inbreeding. It's pretty common practice when trying to get a line of snakes with a certain desirable trait to breed a snake with one of its parents.
So the problem isn't really with breeding for appearance necessarily, but there are a lot of other unhealthy aspects of ball python breeding (by irresponsible breeders) that go along with that that are bad. And unfortunately there aren't nearly as many regulations around ball python keeping and breeding as there are for say dogs, so these distasteful practices are sadly a lot more common.
As for morphs that are bad, I haven't actually heard anything negative about scaleless ball pythons, but they're relatively new, there are very few of them, and like mentioned above one of their creators was not a very reputable source, so it could be that we just don't know enough about them to know about their health problems, or it could be that they have plenty of problems and Brian Barczyk swept those problems under the rug. I have seen a video by him explaining why some of people's concerns about health problems with scaleless ball pythons are unfounded, but I don't think he could exactly call himself an expert on the matter, and he could have simply been lying considering he discovered the morph and was planning on selling it for a lot of money.
Other than scaleless bps, anything with the spider gene or the cinnamon gene are known to have serious health issues tied the gene and are unethical to breed, but tragically they are still bred because, as I said before, there are a lot of unethical bp breeders who concern themselves more with appearance than health
i have a genuine question. i see all these vids and pics over the internet of people breeding snakes for their patterns and colors and while they make look pretty, is it healthy for the snake? like i've heard of spider morph ball pythons having a wobble, but is breeding snakes for this purpose ethical?
This is a great question for @wheremyscalesslither and snakeblr in general! Snake keeping as a hobby and the breeding that goes on in it is not something I have a lot of experience with.
I will say that with almost any species, there is a whole spectrum from ethical to unethical breeding for specific appearances. Ethical breeders prioritize the health and temperament of their animals, while unethical breeders often prioritize only the resulting appearance of their animals.

Arabian Horse History – Domestic Bloodlines
“Domestic Arabians” is the name given to Arabian horses bred in the America. The bloodline for Home Arabians, like that of most People themselves, is a melting pot of influences from everywhere in the international. However, the unmarried maximum essential occasion within the records of purebred Domestic Arabians became hung on American soil.
THE 1893 CHICAGO global’S Honest
40 Arabian horses were exported from the barren region, at the side of their Bedouin handlers, to be a part of the Ottoman Empire exhibit at the Chicago world’s Honest. They made a big effect on the American horse breeders who witnessed them at the Truthful.
SULTAN ABDUL HAMID II
Abdul Hamid II was, from 1876 to 1909, the sultan of the Ottoman Empire, and he maintained a study of Arabian horses whose ancestry was nicely documented. The Arabian Horse Membership of The united states registered two of his stallions, *Leopard, and *Linden Tree after he donated them to President Ulysses S. Supply. The Hamidie Hippodrome Society turned into a collection of rich Arab traders which took its call from the Sultan and in which he had a hobby. The Hamidie Society sponsored the equestrian part of the Ottoman Empire show off at the 1893 Chicago global’s Honest, and the Sultan contributed two of his prized horses. He later approved the exportation of wilderness-bred Arabian mares to The united states as a prefer to President Theodore Roosevelt.
THE Fate OF The arena’S Honest HORSES
Economic difficulties pressured the Hamidie Society to promote all the horses from the Ottoman showcase on the give up of The world’s Honest. Some of the horses put up on the market were young stallions. One mare a number of the Hamidie horses was a gray splendor named Nejdme, who commanded $1200 at public sale, a sizeable price for a horse at the time. She becomes sold by using J.A.P. Ramsdell and went directly to end up the dam of 11 registered foals. Her blood is a not unusual component in many Domestic Arabians.
THE REPORTER WHO Cherished NEJDME
Homer Davenport turned into a journalist covering The sector’s Truthful for the Chicago Usher in. He advanced a fascination with the Arabian horses on display and spent years after their public sale monitoring them down and reading their ancestry. He offered of Nejdme’s goals and based the Davenport desert Arabian Studs. One in every of Davenport’s political cartoons had helped Theodore Roosevelt win the 1904 election.
In go back, Roosevelt lent his political clout to Davenport’s expedition to the barren region in 1906. The result turned into that Davenport become capable of now not only bring back a quantity of stud colts, which were clean to reap but additionally eight purebred mares. Mares were unlawful to export and required unique permission from the Sultan. by 1910, Davenport had offered Nejdme, had imported Crabbet Park Arabians, and became nicely on his manner to turning into one of the fine known breeders of Home Arabian horses. “Davenport Arabians” are direct descendants of his horses.
THE ARABIAN HORSE REGISTRY
In 1908, Davenport and his colleagues fashioned the Arabian Horse Registry of us. Nejdme becomes the primary horse indexed, as AHR-1. The quantity of horses registered with the AHR became 1/2 a million via 1994. Nowadays, the quantity of Arabian horses registered in North America exceeds that of all the relaxation of The sector put together.

Can a Business Be Both Ethical and Successful
This question has been troubling me for some time now. I say troubling, no longer due to the fact I in my opinion have any doubt that business and ethics can and must coexist for a agency to realise achievement. I say it due to the fact reality suggests that, notwithstanding the reality that maximum companies in the corporate world have their so-referred to as “Code of Ethics,
Just a few of these groups without a doubt go with the aid of it. within the intervening time, increasingly more corporations and people discover excuses for his or her unethical behavior and thus setting individuals who maintain to believe in ethics in a tough situation, in which the latter organization has to compete in opposition to folks who are less principled. Sadly, moral humans often lose in their combat in opposition to those, who would do whatever to get what they need.
As a be counted of fact, in modern world
IT has emerged as extra the guideline than the exception for ethical people to fail in their profession and their commercial enterprise life certainly due to the fact they ought to compete with the extra not unusual sort of humans in the ultra-modern marketplace, namely the unprincipled, or whom many prefer to name “clever.”
Almost every day, we are confronted via situations in which we need to make a selection and select between some thing moral and another this is less than ethical, with the latter, Nearly always, appearing because of the extra worthwhile. Being hung up on profit and the urge to be triumphant most people alas pick the latter, which will understand their immediate goals.
There are many examples of unethical decisions which are made
Within the enterprise world. Two examples come to thoughts. At the enterprise level, I can think about situations wherein a enterprise takes a cutthroat approach to put off competing businesses or individuals from their path, in place of coming into with them into an honest opposition; On the character level, I can think about a scenario wherein a greedy worker is focused by using a competitor and is paid a bribe or a commission in return for exclusive records that may assist the opposition grab a business opportunity from the organisation. The unhappy part is that the majority, these days, instead of condemning such a conduct, they describe it as a clever flow, and upload, “You can’t be a sheep amongst wolves.” They say it, as though joining the wolves is the most effective way to survive in state-of-the-art global.
I ponder! When did it grow to be suitable to be dishonest,
Foxy and downright villainous? Why are sincere humans taken into consideration naive, or greater importantly why do they lose their risk of triumphing towards the greater cunning and less moral? Who made this the primary rule of fulfillment? And, is a chance against the economic profitability of a corporation or someone worth sacrificing one’s values and allowing his or her ethics to go out of the window?

Uncaringly, I was just another sexual abuse statistic!
By Stanley Collymore
I never wanted to be a parent having from the very earliest time that I can remember being sexually abused by my biological father who although he wasn’t married to my mother, and never did marry her, nevertheless still lived with us; and while I was much too young in the earliest stages of his sexual abuse of me to fully understand the sickening nature of his depravity, the consequences of what he was actually doing and how understandably perverted and cruelly wrong it all was to me, and especially so as I was undeniably his daughter. I did, however, as I grew older and in sheer desperation by then at long last confide to my mum my personal misgivings as I saw them then in relation to my father’s entirely unnatural and criminally disgusting behaviour towards me.
However, instead of her intuitively empathizing with and lovingly consoling me I instead quickly found myself entirely dismayed and emotionally stunned by the equanimity of my mother’s response as regards what I was telling her as she quite puzzlingly and chillingly reproached me for being an insensitive and utterly selfish “big baby” for callously casting unsubstantiated aspersions on my dad’s unblemished character and who in her unnerving words to me “was just expressing in physical terms his deep-seated and abundant love for me!” Making it explicitly clear that I was plainly nowhere - given the invidious circumstances I was now additionally placed in - near to convincing my own mother that what my dad had time and again done to me and was still an ongoing situation with him wasn’t only physically hurting and emotionally damaging to me but also and even from my young and very sexually untutored perspective was particularly wicked and totally wrong. Yet in spite of that my mum on top of my dad’s rampant sexual abuse of me had knowingly, deviously complicit, and all this coupled with dad’s illicit and debauched actions towards me, aggravated this vile obscenity precisely through her rank and abysmal betrayal of me!
© Stanley V. Collymore 4 March 2017.
Author’s Remarks: I’m well aware that a purported official inquiry reluctantly set up by the British Tory regime and UK parliament both of them shamed into doing so by public pressure and opinion and relating to historic child sexual abuse allegations over a period of several decades across Britain is belatedly and shambolically underway. But in reporting this fact let me categorically and unambiguously make it absolutely clear that from a principled and personal perspective neither this inquiry nor its expected future findings, whatever they turn out to be, are of will be of the slightest interest to me; and with exceedingly good reasons.
The first of these being that the heinous allegations long and methodically ignored or else brazenly, callously and officially covered up in what’s undeniably class-structured, toadying and cap-doffing Britain by all the relevant authorities that were duty bound to probe them but adamantly, unethically, sycophantically to their perceived social betters and even criminally refused to do so because those making the allegations were disdainfully and dismissively regarded at best as Plebeians or worst more generally as the lower classes who didn’t matter in the least while those in the firing line of their concerted allegations were and still are among Britain’s most powerful and massively influential political, financial, governing, social, celebrity and privileged elites; the unchallengeable untouchables as it were!
The second reason: equally logical and laudable on my part, is my absolute distrust of those who’re involved with this purported inquiry, which essentially is nothing more than a rather premeditatedly devised and cynically conducted whitewash together with a calculated and deceitful sop to the orchestrated “sensitivities” of a seriously unthinking British public always eager to jump onto any populist-perceived bandwagon which might, however transiently so, ameliorate the deeply ingrained and totally insecure awareness of their manifest lack of self-worth.
A chaotic inquiry, to say the least, which was foot-draggingly at best and with implacable resistance and consummate hostility for the greater part and most of the time by those who were enforcedly through mounting public pressure obliged to set it up, actually deigned to arrogantly insult the acuity of the intelligent among the British public by nepotistically drafting in those from among its own privileged ranks and the said category of persons that were closely allied with those under suspicion for these ghastly crimes to literally “investigate” these people. Natural justice, neutrality and fair play aside a state of affairs that either didn’t dawn on or were knowingly and asininely ignored by those responsible for this totally obtuse state of affairs.
Yet all the same haughtily taking no cognizance of these facts until overwhelming public condemnation and mounting pressure grudgingly forced them to cosmetically tamper with their designated and instituted modus operandi which was and still is to permanently shield from public exposure, irrevocable ignominy and a humiliating prosecution the plethora of perverts, paedophiles and the other inured criminal, sexual deviants that form an integral of the establishers’ of this inquiry’s intimately close and treasured political, financial and social “privileged elite” circles.
My third and principal reason of the many others that readily come to mind and justly necessitate my taking the principled stance I have, is that all of these “victims” even at a cursory glance are irrefutably white. What’s wrong with that I hear you ask; can’t whites be victims as well? Of course they can is my blunt and honest answer but NOT exclusively so! For I know and every other principled person does that Blacks and other non-whites not only in Britain but for several centuries across its global empire have routinely been victims of English and British barbarities and among these massive catalogues of their crimes have been recurrent and barbaric sexual abuse. And to cite just two examples of these my own case and that of my fellow Afro-Caribbean kith and kin – a cute expression that you whites lovingly like to use as regards yourselves. Don’t get me wrong! I’ve never been personally raped or sexually abused by anyone whether white or Black, and had anyone tried to far less so succeeded in doing so at any stage of my life I don’t think they’d be alive to boast about it subsequently for knowing what had been done to me even supposedly so as a child I would have sought them out in my adulthood and killed them. I’m simply referring, in reference to the above, to the systematic implantation of the white male Y chromosome that was enforcedly injected into my DNA system and that of all other African Caribbean people, whether living at home in the West Indies or our wider global Diaspora, because of the unrelenting methodical rape of our Black female ancestors within those Caribbean islands; so much such that many of us have more white genes in us than several of you who hubristically and vaingloriously claim to be white.
My second example also includes Black people, and in this case rural Kenyan women in long-established tribal social communities, who were in more recent times routinely gang-raped and callously impregnated by British soldiers garrisoned there and compelled to bear their children because ethically abortion was out of the question for them. But rather than own up to these despicable rapes and rampant sexual abuse the MoD despite the vast amount of evidence to support these ladies claims sought to and successfully portrayed in the media, when these Black women complained of what had happened to them, that they were “prostitutes” who were out for pecuniary advantage by sullying the good name of these British soldiers.
Now that might satisfy the brain-dead in Britain who have an exaggerated and even a delusional; notion of who and what the British Armed Forces are, but I served in the RAF and know from firsthand just how barbaric some elements of our boys can be. But there are other Blacks too; and in this case the Aborigines of Australia whose children were forcibly taken from their parents and sent to concentration camps – for essentially that’s precisely what they were – to effectively have their blackness bred out of them; babies and toddlers among them. But will there be an inquiry about their treatment? Don’t hold your breath on that one. So my deliberate stance on saying “Fuck You” in relation to this British “inquiry” isn’t because of any insensitivity on my part towards the “genuine” victims involved but simply because I’m sick and fucking tired of the conceited assumption on the part of whites and especially British ones that only white Caucasians have sensitivities, unlike every other race, and when these are trodden upon regardless of when this is supposed to have happened these must humanely and understandably be dealt with in a manner that only whites are exclusively entitled to; never mind white Britain and Europe’s loathsome conduct globally for centuries, and which is still ongoing, as regards millions of other unfortunate victims – yes victims – in the Global South.
But the poem that I’m written: “Uncaringly, I was just another sexual abuse statistic!” is based on a real life story that I know of from personal experience and involved a young female who from her earliest childhood was sexually abused by her biological father and with the complicit assistance of her own mother. Incidentally all the participants were white.
Rachel and I first met in rather compromising circumstances for her. She was accidentally seen by me shoplifting in an Indian grocery store where I was and was a frequent shopper myself but before I could approach her and politely request that she refrained from what she was doing but with her apparently also having been seen by one of the store’s staff members Rachel was confronted, detained and the police about to be summoned. Knowing the store’s manager as I personally did this girl who was a complete stranger to me and only about 14 years old at the time and I could clearly see was thoroughly frightened by the consequences of her actions, I intervened on her behalf with the store’s manager and persuaded him not to call the police.
I then paid for the items that Rachel, whose name I’d acquired from her, had stolen as she had no money with her. Then with a firm but measured reprimand of her by the shop’s manager and with my business card to a local, voluntary outreach and extra-curricular educational project that I’d set up a while back and was in charge of running handed to her and additionally my invitation to her to attend some of its sessions if she cared to, Rachel left the Indian grocery store.
As I’d expectantly hoped for Rachel not only attended but also became actively involved in the project itself during which time and with my having gained her confidence, and respect I guess, she voluntarily and openly confided in me about her past; essentially her life history. Superbly in due course and as a direct consequence of her involvement with the project Rachel became an absolutely transformed individual, a process that saw her embrace life fully, what it had to offer her and appreciably how she could positively make the most of it, a situation that resulted in her becoming an impressively university-qualified person in the field of work that she freely and decidedly opted for. But significantly too the loving wife and adorable mother whom in the darkest hours and most traumatic growing up years she’d enforcedly and without familial help endured solemnly vowed that were she to survive to adulthood she’d never become. Now all of that was emphatically behind her.

Suicide food and sexual cannibalism
Good evening,” it lowed and sat back heavily on its haunches, “I am the main Dish of the Day. May I interest you in parts of my body?” -Douglas Adams “The Ultimate Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”
Nonhuman animals raised for meat have been domesticated for thousands of years. Some characteristics that have been artificially selected for are earlier maturation, tolerance for crowding, reduced exploratory behavior and docility including an almost across the board decrease in brain size (and arguably intelligence, compared to their wild cousins).
As much as we have changed the behavior and responses of animals bred to be eaten we have not been able to breed out of them the desire to carry on living. What if animals could be bred who had no preferences about existing and who wanted to be eaten?
Depictions of animals that want to be eaten or facilitate their own preparation aren’t uncommon. In science fiction, most famously, Douglas Adams wrote about a pig who wants to be eaten as well as a large bovine animal asking guests at a restaurant to eat him in “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” (abbreviated passage, film clip). An older manifestation of this idea is the Shmoo, a cartoon critter who not only can taste like steak, pork, chicken, catfish or oysters but blissfully lays eggs and gives milk.
More commonplace is “suicide food”, depictions of animals like the one above who seem to delight in being prepared for consumption. There’s a marvelous collection over at suicidefood.blogspot.co.uk.
From a utilitarian perspective would it be ok to eat animals that wanted to be eaten? From the way it’s depicted by Douglas Adams these animals have a sense of ultimate purpose, a Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs that has at its pinnacle the self actualization of being delicious. Arguably, engineering an animal like this would require at least human-like levels of consciousness making the problem of reducing dissonance about eating animals by discounting their self-awareness even more difficult. One would essentially have to increase the sentience of animals to make an Adams like scenario possible. Not to mention that this would only increase the animals’ desire to be served up but not limit the pain of slaughter (among other things).
Hal Herzog, who spends a lot of time thinking about human-animal relationships floated a thought experiment at a meeting, Sadomasochistic Pigs:
“I’m wondering if it would be unethical to genetically engineer an S&M pig that enjoys pain and suffering….Most people in the audience seemed appalled by the idea of genetically engineered but completely pain free meat. But they did not even bother to come up with a coherent rationale behind their thinking. (I’m thinking Peter Singer – ever the utilitarian – might approve, but Tom Regan — the deontologist – would not.)”
Genetically engineering humans and nonhuman animals with a higher pain threshold or some degree of analgesia isn’t new however “enjoying pain” is different. While there might be some genetic basis for finding pleasure in pain an animal that had the pain and pleasure wires crossed could be wireheading by simply engaging in self-harm. Furthermore masochistic nonhuman animals might fix the problem of pain but would arguably not fix the problem of wanting to carry on living. Even masochists don’t off themselves for the ultimate pleasure of death.
Adaptive behaviors are those that help an organism propagate their genes and the functional purpose of pleasure is to motivate, cue up and reward an organism for doing something adaptive (e.g. sex, grooming, eating and drinking). Conversely, pain does the opposite, indicating maladaptive behavior or consequences. It’s hard to disentangle pain from death because death (and being eaten) is one of the worst outcomes for one’s reproductive success. As David Buss likes to say “It’s bad to be dead”.
Is there an animal for whom being eaten is adaptive that we could reverse bioengineer? In the Australian Redback Spider one of the male’s most adaptive options is to be eaten by the female. That’s because he has such a high possibility of mortality just finding female #1 (and thus it’s very unlikely that if he lives another day he’ll mate again). Being eaten also prolongs his mating and it increases the probability that the female will reject other males after him. Eating a member of your own species may offer the perfect balance of nutrients. In other sexually cannibalistic species it’s been found that males devoured by their mates have healthier, more fertile offspring. In the Redback Spider the male doesn’t just passively allow himself to gobbled up but often actively somersaults onto the female’s mouthparts (a little like the shmoo who will immolate himself the moment he sees a hungry human).
Let’s ignore for the moment that sometimes even after he somersaults the male tries to get away and that natural selection is unlikely to endow an organism’s last moments with anything consistent (after all it cannot influence future behavior). If being a tasty morsel for the female is, for the most part, adaptive for the male one might imagine that being devoured in this context isn’t painful but pleasurable for the male. If goats can be genetically engineered to produce spider silk in their milk could we genetically engineer animals who enjoy being eaten? Aside from the tenuous series of links I’ve walked through in this blog in practical terms I think the best way forward is to completely divorce animal protein for human consumption from any sentience at all like invitro meat.
Another issue that I have been thinking about more recently is wild animal suffering. Mostly people concerned with this issue describe finding alternate food sources for or genetically engineering predators. But the flip side would be changing prey animals. What if wild prey animals could feel pleasure when they finally meet their demise in the mouth of a predator? One of many reasons that nature is cruel is that any genetic variant that limits pain and thus makes a wounded prey animal less likely to escape and live another day will likely be selected out.
Note: Thanks to Hal Herzog for the quote as well as telling me about shmoos
