“ok, for one, I wanted it to be a surprise so that I could communicate better with your family, and two, you didn’t tell me you were learning french.” he responded with a large smile on his face.

“alright let’s hear it, tell me a sentence.” you asked him, leaning back in your chair with a grin on your face as he let out a chuckle.

Oh really? Well, if it’s that easy to buy your affection then expect his wallet to be in your lap before you finish your sentence. 

Leona’s a prince who doesn’t even keep an eye on his wallet. (Seriously, he just tosses it at Ruggie and goes about with his day), so if you ever bring up some money problem, he’ll just toss his wallet at you and just not ask for it back. Plus, his royal blood is actually good for something, so putting you in the lap of luxury others can’t access is easy for him. 

Expect to be his pillow for a while though, he’s not a nice guy so you gotta pay him back somehow….

New Year Writing Tag

Happy New Year everyone!

I love this time of year for how it invites reflection and a general (re)assessment of where I am as a writer. I've seen a few "new year writing" tags floating around, but didn't love their focus on numbers, so I decided to make my own. Feel free to use the template if you're interested, leave stuff out, etc!

What's been your biggest learning point this past year?

Readers are fickle, and winning yourself an audience is not the same as maintaining it. Still, there will always be people who love your work, exactly the way it is.

How has your writing developed this past year?

I think my grasp on the English language has definitely improved! I find I'm more comfortable with varying my sentence structure, and the fact that I'm finally getting the hang of punctuation also definitely helps haha That said, I've been leaning into my overwriting tendencies. MA was supposed to be 150k words and now it's gonna clock in at nearly 200k. And that's ok because it was a difficult project and I'm proud of myself for pulling through, but I definitely need to rein myself in, moving forward.

Good writing habits?

Finally installing automatic backups through my writing software! Also, investing in a nice keyboard for the first time in my life. Life-changing.

Bad writing habits?

Pushing too hard rather than taking a break because my general modus operandi in life is "Work hard now, so you can relax later" - except, I never let myself get to the "later" part.

Favorite thing you wrote?

Chapter 20 of "Magistrate's Advocate". If you know, you know, but it was a very unusual, very challenging chapter for me, and I love how it came out.

Favorite reads?

"A Sorceress Comes to Call" by T. Kingfisher

"Yellowface" by R.F. Kuang

And my re-reads of "Guards, Guards" and "Small Gods" by Terry Pratchett, but what else is new :D

Biggest win?

Making friends through writing. Connecting with people in a way that goes so much further than storytelling. Getting to go to the wedding of someone I met through fandom (and then try to explain to the other guests how you met :D). Sitting on a riverbank in a European city with a lovely reader for 4h straight, receiving the most beautiful fountain pen as a gift. Really, everyone who's made me feel like they care about me just as much as they care my stories ❤

Goals for the new year?

Finish the translation of my original novel.

Stop beating myself up over the things I have not achieved.

Forget AO3 statistics exist.

Shamelessly re-read my own fics over and over again.

I've just recently started a writing group with a handful of lovely people I met through fandom, and I am extremely excited for it! It's hard to find a group of like-minded people, and while I love the focus on positivity in fandom, I really miss being told where my writing still needs work :D

it was, and he does! at one point an anon brought up the idea of all of their hoodies being a little big on him anyway because they got larger sizes due to their bulkier shells, so i'm sure its not exclusive to leo anyway. i think he'd find something deeply comforting about it.

it's a hurdle because his first impulse is to just force himself to talk-- raph shouting at him to use his words has pretty seriously imprinted onto him, so i think he'd be,, embarrassed? even if he logically knows they're not going to hurt him for something like that anymore. they'll probably just start doing it themselves when he's a bad mood, so he'll feel more comfortable echoing them.

3. When cc! Donnie cries, is it more of a "I-I can't-" or a "I can't.." type of speaking? Or does it depend?

it depends! sometimes he's frantic and terrified and sometimes he's in the mindset where he thinks there's, well,,, no escaping the inevitability of being hurt. no begging, no stammering or trying to run, just him shutting down. it's the same instinct that brought him to the laundry room floor.

4. Does he ever do April's assignments still? If not, how would he react upon finding out she has a different teammate?

he does! im sure he didn't do it all the time before the curse anyway so i dont think he'd mind, especially because he's a lot more cooperative so april has no reason to outright reject him lol. if she needs to review something he'll stop by, he's very enthusiastic to be helpful :') moreso than before.

i think it was mostly "i wish he'd shut up", or "there he goes again" or this twisted thought that he was just doing it to make them feel bad, since "he must be guilt-tripping me" was their response to actually feeling guilty with their curse-addled brains. and when it's late at night they're especially grumpy lmao-- but the way they talked about donnie while he was in the closet kind of applies to everything.

even if he's not having night terrors, i do think donnie still cries in his sleep a lot. they try and do better.

he isn't even aware he was cursed at that point! he just goes back to how he was before, keeping donnie's sensory needs in mind while cooking for him. the french toast was specifically something pointed out as unusual, because mikey usually didn't do things like that anyway. the first thing the curse really made them feel was apathy.

sometimes, if he's already having bad dreams. they get further and few between the more he recovers.

hueso is really the only person outside of leo's immediate family that he actually trusts and feels comfortable confiding in, so im sure he could come by if he asked, but i dont think he'd really think of it? he's an uncle figure but he's still, like, a figure,, it would feel kind of like crossing an unspoken social boundary, interacting with teenagers like that and just coming by their home. something would need to drastically change about their dynamic for him to feel like that's okay to do. it's probably a good healthy thing that he thinks that. he may very rarely, if it's pressing.

10. This one's just a thought but I feel like movies where someone gets cursed, it's an immediate trigger.

hmmm it's hard to say. they dont actually remember what happened that got them cursed (ngl ive always had the idea in my head that kitsune immediately erased their memories, somehow) so i think it would be less the act of cursing within itself, and moreso mind control as a concept. not the type where you're just an empty puppet, more like, nuanced brainwashing with an internal struggle, or possession. they might find winter soldier triggering, idk why that came to me lmao

i think being controlled like that would scare the shit out of them, but witnessing it in fiction wouldn't really scare them. the kind of "battling your shadow self as they try to take over your mind" thing you'll see in some media, however? yeah.

12. On rough days, does Splinter ever have to feed Donnie?

i think he's already had to. it's very likely he did on that day leo was gone, where donnie was so out of it. there's bad days (which are usual) and then there's Bad Days where he's largely dissociative. they become rare over time, but it usually does mean he wont be able to take care of himself. i think he has quite a few when he's first getting back into combat and missions because it's a rough transition.

yep! congrats to mikey for being the only one to get an actual positive character arc out of cc, although he did get super fucked up in some places lmao

no, because donnie isn't going to die, why would they need to know? im sure the idea of learning things like that has crossed their minds, but donnie would refuse to teach them even if they were super curious about it. now that he knows he's not passing any time soon, he at least wants to be useful to them.

Ok but in all seriousness, Astarion does admire your dedication to your craft. He sees how much work you put into learning new spells and is genuinely excited when you get it right 

It doesn’t mean he’s gonna stop making fun of you though. You're telling him you belong to a SCHOOL of magic??? Need for Academic validation much? Oh and please, if you're gonna wear wizard robes try to make them a little stylish, or he’ll come for your sense of fashion too.

Actually, I bet he’d help you spice up your outfits a little. A thigh slit here, a tasteful gold embroidery there, your not completely beyond hope

Dw tho, you can absolutely get him back. Oh, you need some magical assistance? Maybe help figuring out how a magical item works? Uh oh, looks like the rouge needs the wizard's help after all dontcha astarion? 

It’s definitely the highlight of your day when he has to ask for help. Unfortunately, it goes both ways. His speed and skills have definitely saved your ass in battle before 

Honestly, it’s giving annoyances to lovers. Plus I’m convinced at least 40% of Astarions love language is sass and knife cat energy. 

He enjoys the banter definitely, but it’s never meant to cut too deep. He’s good at reading people, so say you're having trouble learning this one spell and you're starting to get frustrated. He can definitely tell and knows not to make jokes about your magic today. He can’t exactly help, because this man is NOT magically inclined. But he’ll pull you away from the spell scroll long enough for you to take a deep breath and have a break. It helps in its own way because now you can come back to it with a more calm mindset. 

You can���t tell me this man isn’t laughing (a little manically) when you cast fireball. I mean come on that’s one of the most entertaining things he’s seen in 200 years let him have some fun

But also-  

He secretly finds your powers very cool. I mean there’s something beautiful about magic at its core, he can’t help but be just a little entranced. And you’ve definitely used magic to show off to him just a lil (make a rose out of magic blue light or somethin he’ll scoff but find it endearing) 

Honestly, I imagine you two are a slight hoarder couple. I mean you need to have all these ingredients for spells on you, and Astarions a rouge he definitely has like at least 5 knives on him at all times. Also the magic items. You both love to hoard those, just in case they’re useful 

If you actually do have some sort of wizard's tower, layer, study, or something Astarion wants to see it

He’ll make a joking excuse as to why he wants to see your lair. And he’s DEFINITELY gonna grab a random cloak in there and do a bad wizard impersonation 

BUT- 

The real reason he wants to see it is because it’s an integral part of you. It’s basically your home, where you store everything you find valuable, where the pantry is always stocked with the food you like, and where the bed has the exact number of pillows you want it to have. Astarion wants to know these things about you. 

I imagine after you finally defeat the mindflayers and everyone goes off to find their own way (or maybe you all stick together and keep adventuring while also occasionally having individual adventures, who am I to break up your found family) you immediately take Astarion to your tower and start working on methods to help him walk in the sun. magic sunscreen? Enchanted daylight ring? Charmed circlet? You've got options and you're not afraid to use them. Anything to make it so that Astarion doesn’t have to live his life in darkness anymore. You jest and say it would be a true tragedy if you couldn't see his beautiful silver hair kissed by the sunrise, but in reality, you were immediately tearing through every tome you owned looking for a solution. After all, who wouldn't do anything for the man that held their heart? 

Ok now imagine. You and Astarion just completed a mission, saving some people in the grove with Halsin. And you already had received a message from Wyll and Karlach asking for assistance smoking out a group of assasins that had settled in Baldurs gate. But gods you were so tired. It was nearly midnight when you both decided to crash at your liar instead of heading straight to the location Wyll had given you. You were both covered in mud, twigs, and other “gifts of nature” as Astarion had described them in a voice mocking Halsins. You were so tired your eyelids stung, and everything was hazy. You both more or less stumbled into your study, already half asleep. 

Of course, you had become a bit more coherent when you realized that there was only one bed. And two of you. Now this might seem a bit ridiculous to care about things like that considering how close the two of you are and how much you have been through and done together, but now hear me out. This man has spent the last 200 years either not having a bed or being forced to share one. You had both decided he needed some time to just be able to have his own space to sleep, after all, you had all of your lifetime together, and you wanted him to be comfortable, so whenever he had come to your study, he slept on the couch. You had wanted to get him a cot or something of his own at the place, buuut it had kinda slipped your mind entirely. And the couch he slept on was currently covered in about 50 books stacked across the couch, another thing you had forgotten about. Whoops. 

You and Astarion both looked at the pile of books on the couch and then at each other. You felt like you were about to pass out where you stood and he didn't look much better. There was an instant understanding between the both of you, that understanding being “fuck it” as you both collapse onto your bed, neither taking off your filthy armor and robes, simply passing out on the spot.

You awoke to a certain vampires face buried in the crook of your neck, trying to block out the sun now shining in his eyes. Eventually, you both dragged yourself out of the small bed and cleaned yourselves up before heading off to Wyll's location, but after this situation you both unspokenly began to sleep in the same bed alot more often.

for the sw high fantasy au, how are you planning to make the story go down? Will it be pretty similar to the movies, or will you be making any changes? Also, are you gonna be doing anything with all the crazy creatures found on every planet connect? Like, some of them are dragons and so on? Or there being different families all the creatures fit into? and finally, are you gonna include any ships that aren’t canon?

Okay SO. Let me answer these one at a time :D

(this is over a thousand words so it's going to be below the cut)

In terms of story, everything from the Prequels through the Original Trilogy is going to be pretty much the same. What I can tell you is that although I haven’t actually put that much thought into the Sequels yet, they are going to be markedly different from the current Disney canon in that they will combine elements from both the Disney canon and Legends, including Mara Jade and the other Organa-Solo kids (Jacen, Jaina, and Anakin as well as Ben) because they live rent-free in my mind. 

However, a few things in the Prequels especially are going to be markedly different because the way they are executed in canon doesn’t fit into a High Fantasy world, and I’ll put these as bulletpoints:

Kamino is going to be introduced very differently. While Dooku destroying all evidence of its existence works in canon, because it’s in the outer rim and canon Star Wars is a digital, data-based world, in a fantasy setting it would be extremely difficult to cover up all the evidence of an entire island- especially in regards to its references (or lack thereof) in the Jedi Archives, because these would obviously now be a paper-and-pen, books and scrolls and tapestries library, instead of a digital archive where data can just be erased. (Though, the mental image of Dooku checking out all the books on Kamino and then burning them is very funny to me. Especially if Jocasta Nu walked in on him. “Master Dooku… what are you doing?” “Oh, nothing, dear Jocasta.” *book makes a FWOOSH sound as it goes up in flames*) Instead, in the AU Kamino is an Atlantis-esque legend to the people of the Galactic Archipelago: in the days of the Old Republic, it was sunk in divine retribution for the unnatural genetic alchemy practiced by the Kaminoans. After leaving the Jedi, Dooku discovers that Kamino is, in fact, real, and that the Kaminoans preserved their ancient fortress undersea by way of a magic barrier. When Obi-Wan learns about the Kaminoan dart from Dex, his problem in looking for Kamino is now that no one takes him seriously because at every turn, it’s dismissed as just a children’s tale.

This isn’t necessarily a story thing, but the map is slightly different; the most obvious example of this is the changing of Mustafar’s location, because it and Coruscant are part of the same chain of volcanic islands- Coruscant just happens to be dormant. In fact, Coruscant’s underworld is built into the caldera of the volcano, because it hasn’t erupted since the early days of the Old Republic and is widely thought to be extinct.

C-3PO has his own new lore now. He’s the ghost of a knight- Sir Anthony Threepio, so I can keep it phonetically similar (C-3PO = Sir Threepio) and also give a little reference to Anthony Daniels- who died in a surprise pirate ambush on Tatooine centuries ago, and the stress he retains from the events surrounding his death has made him neurotically obsessed with being prepared for absolutely every possible situation. In life, he was also incredibly intelligent, and spoke almost every language in the Galactic Archipelago. When Anakin is a little boy, he meets and befriends Threepio’s ghost, and, being the kind soul he is, offers to build him a suit of armor so Threepio can be in the world again. In gratitude, Threepio swears a knightly oath to serve Anakin’s family for as long as he is able.

R2-D2 (and, actually, all astromechs) ALSO has his own lore. Astromech Gnomes are a race that lives far below the surface of the Galactic Archipelago, and have for so long that sunlight is actually toxic to them. They are gifted with a masterful knowledge of machinery- an art lost to the rest of the Archipelago- and can build and/or fix almost anything, including ships. In addition, because they live in near-total darkness, they have an excellent internal compass, so they often work as navigators. However, because they can only ply their trades on the surface, and sunlight will kill them, they use their mechanical genius to build themselves small dome-like suits from which they can safely practice their craft without endangering themselves. In addition, they can understand but cannot speak basic, due to the fact that they have avian-like mouth structures and can only speak in whistles and chirps. 

On a similar note, let’s talk about Battle Droids. I’ll try to breeze through this pretty quickly. Regular Battle Droids are necromanced skeletons (General Grievous is an ancient, undead Lich Warlord and necromances all of them), Super Battle Droids are centaur-esque automatons (in the classic sense, like in Greek and Roman mythology), and Droidekas I… haven’t actually figured out yet (if you have any ideas let me know!). 

Creatures! Well, obviously I just talked about Astromechs and Battle Droids. But yes, I have thought about this! I have a few ideas which I actually came up with while I was designing Padme’s area outfit from Attack of the Clones, and then obviously I’ve been thinking about the alien races that are too bizarre to just put into my system of “There Are Many And Diverse Human Cultures In The Galactic Archipelago”. And anyway, this is a fantasy world, we need fantasy creatures. I’ll put these in bulletpoints, too. In regards to all of these, I’m trying to keep their in-canon appearances as much as possible while just amping up the fantasy vibe, so- for example- Admiral Ackbar will still look like Admiral Ackbar, but with lobster legs. And such.

The Aquatic races are all types of merfolk: Nautolans are your classic mermaids, and still have their head tentacles (for reference, I’ll upload a picture of Heroforge!Kit Fisto at the end of this list); Mon Calamari are crustacean-legged; Quarren are squid-people; and the other fish-people (like the one who steals Ahsoka’s lightsabers in that one episode) are. Well. They’re fish mermaids.

Darth Maul specifically is a Drider- a spider-legs person. The Clone Wars writers were cowards (affectionate), but I am not, so he keeps the spider legs.

Ships. Both in the boat sense and the romance sense. But I suspect you’re talking about the romance sense here :) So here’s the thing, most of my Star Wars ships are. Already canon. (A few I think might just be widely-accepted fanon, but that could just be because I’m not quite done with TCW and I haven’t started TBB yet, so that remains to be seen). HOWEVER. There is, in fact, Mara Jade, and as she is no longer Disney canon, I think it’s safe to say that she and Luke are no longer canon, so yes, there will be at least ONE non-canonical ship in this AU- that being the aforementioned Luke and Mara Jade. There might be others, which I will get back to you on upon completion of TCW and TBB. (Oh, and there’s also pre-Sith Dooku and Jocasta Nu, because old people in love is near and dear to my heart, and I don’t know if this counts as non-canon or not, but that will be at least briefly touched upon.)

YunaAki Moments Collection: Chapter 13

Back with another post~ (lookie~! Momo in her widdle pouch~! 😆💕)

This is the chapter where the first house visit takes place so there’s more Akiho-content than anything and will be shorter since I only extracted the relevant parts.

…but who knows if it’ll really be that short with me at the helm 😂

Anyways, let’s get started.

First mention of Kaito is the box of sweets Akiho brought with her as a gift for the host. The gesture is a thoughtful one (actually, it’s customary in Asian cultures) and doubles as a way for him to secretly gauge what the Kinomoto household is like.

He needed to see if this family is suitable for him to entrust Akiho to after he completes his plan to save.

A shady method to do things, yes. However, given the dire situation Akiho was in and how desperate Kaito was to get her away from the magicians chasing after the artifact, how else was he going to determine this home would be safe enough for his most important person to stay in?

He’s not going to get that confirmation through her interactions with her classmates at school, that’s for sure. So he has to infiltrate that house somehow to take a good look for himself (make sure none of them are hiding skeletons behind closed doors, all that jazz).

And it’s quite smart of him to chose a box to do it. Not the sweets but the box they come in. Probably.

Because the sweets will be consumed over time so it wouldn’t be very useful to spy through those. But the box would likely be left somewhere accessible (ex. kitchen counter) until the sweets are finished. Not only does this give Kaito enough time to observe everyone, he can also observe from a location where all the family members cross paths every single day.

It isn’t necessary for him to dive too deeply into their privacy. He just needed to get an idea of what the home and its residents are like. And you can learn a lot about a household by how its members treat each other in a shared space like the dining room.

If they constantly fight or argue, it would show in plain view. But if not and they are decent, normal people, then that would show in plain view, too.

So yea, Kaito was pretty much checking for the right vibes but he also must be absolutely thorough with it since it concerns Akiho, after all. If this family didn’t pass with “A”s across the board, he would never give Akiho to them.

Akiho had to go to the best home he could find after all the horrible suffering she had to endure under her clan. For her, he refuses to settle for anything less (omg, Kaito… 😭❤️).

Kaito is mentioned again when the topic of konnyaku is brought up.

Now I’m curious about when they discovered that he liked konnyaku...probably at the same Akiho decided that she hated it 😂

But seriously, this is a big deal because when he was little, Kaito had no preference for anything at all. And when it came to food in particular, he rarely cared about how it tasted and just ate whatever gave him sustenance. Which is a very telling sign that he had depression (🥺💔)

So the fact that there is something he actually likes now and someone can affirm that about him? It’s practically screaming character development. He went through such a significant change from “I don’t really care” to “ok, I don’t mind this” to “oh yea, I like this”.

And the cause of that could only be Akiho because prior to meeting her, Kaito never smiled either. He didn’t have any reason to.

Being with her changed all that. She became his reason to smile, to want to try new things if at least to see what she liked or didn’t like. And through that, he was able to discover what he genuinely liked as well.

She opened his world in ways that never would’ve happened if he stayed at the Association as their tool. She helped him grow as a person which in turn, allowed for Akiho to open up as well thanks to the kindness he always showed her.

And this is most prevalent in their love language which is food.

Take this for example.

Akiho has been served beef stew and says it’s delicious.

But then she follows that up with a comment on how it tastes slightly different from all the beef stew she had before when she was traveling overseas (yes, that’s exactly how that bottom panel translates).

She and Kaito traveled together from country to country before arriving in Japan.

Kaito also cooks the majority (if not all) of Akiho’s meals.

Which would mean that probably all the beef stew she ate up to this point were made by him. All the different kinds of beef stew from the different regions they lived in, Kaito went out of his way to find those recipes and cook them for her.

She remembers their taste and that’s how she can discern Kaito’s cooking from another person’s cooking.

The effort and love he poured into the food he gives her is associated with those flavors. The impression they left were strong enough to not only become her fondest memories but also the standard she references by when she’s interacting with other people.

So when she compliments Sakura’s cooking, it’s not just to praise her. It’s also tell her that she’s kind.

The taste may be different but the sentiment it carries is similar to the gentle thoughtfulness she always feels from Kaito.

“You are kind. You truly care for me just like he does.”

(should also note that since Kaito, chef extraordinarie, cooks for her all the time, Akiho has developed quite a sophisticated palate. So her praising Sakura is a testament to Sakura’s good cooking skills too 😊👍)

Yes, he cares about her more than anyone else ever did.

So much that it wouldn’t surprise me if Akiho compared her terrible kinsmen to Kaito in her own private thoughts.

She’d never say it out loud because she’s too good of a person to really hate anyone. And because she still believes that she’s at fault for not meeting the ridiculous expectations that had been placed on her.

But there is no hiding the fact that her clan is the source of all her loneliness and low self-esteem. The right panel ↗️ proves it in how sad she looks when the conversation moves to the topic of what her home life is like.

“Everyone in my family is always busy…we leave it to others to take care of things for us.”

Her clan is her blood relation, they’re supposed to be people whom she can rely on as family.

But instead, they’re too “busy” to take that responsibility. Hell, they’re so busy with their magic affairs, they can’t even take care of themselves and have to hire other people to take care of them for them (how embarassing).

And since Akiho doesn’t have magic, she’s further neglected and shunned by her own relatives. They don’t want to pay attention to her. They don’t want to take care of her or raise her because they don’t see any worth in her.

So imagine how Akiho must’ve felt after she met Kaito and began traveling with him.

She was so used to her clan being so unfairly conditional with their approval that she probably couldn’t believe that there was someone out there who would not treat her the same way.

But Kaito was that person, the very first.

Granted, he introduced himself as someone who was assigned to serve her but it’s so obvious he went above and beyond the tasks of simply assisting his “master”.

He didn’t just cook her meals and kept her house clean. He also provided her with emotional support, encouraged her to chase her goals and dreams and never ever talked down to her about what she didn’t have or couldn’t do.

He respected her and that gave Akiho a clear idea on what genuine love must be like.

That’s why when she transferred to this school in Japan, she was so happy because the people here welcome her and offer their friendship without demanding anything from her in return. She can recognize that they truly accept her for who she is because she already learned that through Kaito.

However, the more the light of someone’s kindess shines on her, the more apparent the shadow of her past becomes.

It’s not that the shadow is getting bigger. It’s just that Akiho finally realized how cruel her clan is and always will be. Compared to how Kaito and her friends treat her with sympathy and warmth, her clan won’t even acknowledge her existence.

And that’s what divides blood kin from family.

Blood kin just means you’re biologically related to someone, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re close to them.

But family should be. Family doesn’t have to be blood-related but they must be good to you. They must be willing to know you, nurture you and want to protect you to qualify as a true family.

So when someone who doesn’t know Akiho very well yet says “oh wow, that’s so cool”, it’s natural that Akiho would shake her head and deny it. There’s nothing cool or great about people who are always cold to you, who refuse to teach you anything but still expect the impossible from you and criticize you even more when you can’t produce results.

But those who are willing to teach you, talk with you, spend time with you, cheer you on in your efforts to become your own individual and be proud of you and still love you regardless of whether you succeeded or failed, that’s what’s really wonderful. That’s what a real family, a real home, is.

Akiho’s clan will never be that for her…but they don’t matter anymore because she’s already found her home in Kaito.

And because he’s always been there for her, making up for all the important things she lacked in life, Akiho wants to show her gratitude.

She wants to return the sentiment to Kaito, to tell him she sees him as her family and to let him know she cares for him just as much as he has always cared for her.

So she takes the first brave step and asks for cooking lessons. That’s the fastest and most meaningful way to get her feelings across to the guy she loves.

With food!

Of course, Akiho always had the chance to ask Kaito to teach her and she probably did help him out in the kitchen on the occasion.

But since it’s technically his job to look after her and she was always busy reading books on the orders of her clan, there probably weren’t a lot of opportunities for her to do what she wanted to do.

What’s more, since she wants to surprise Kaito, she would have to ask someone else to help her.

And now that that chance has come, she can’t help her eagerness to get started.

Kaito is so dear to her, oh so very dear.

That’s why the cooking must be done by her hands because it’s her feelings that will pour into the food.

It’s her love that she wants to convey to her special person.

The person who grew to become everything (confidant, supporter, protector, friend, beloved, family) she will ever need in this world.

Akiho is so full of life now thanks to Kaito.

Before, she was so sad and lonely. Aside from her books and Momo who managed to fill a bit of that void, there was nothing that could make her smile.

But look at her in these panels, so different from the poor little girl who’d run away from people because she was afraid she’d be hurt again.

Her heart is filled to the brim with love. Her eyes are so excited, sparkling with hope. And when she smiles, her whole being radiates with happiness.

She has come so far from the past. She’s changed. She is who she is today because Kaito was always by her side.

And it’s the same for him. What he wanted most was to see Akiho happy. He changed himself for the very sake of achieving that.

There is no such thing as a love that doesn’t change because love is what inspires change.

Just like how Kaito caring so much about Akiho brought out the best qualities in himself (his kindness, compassion and devotion), Akiho is also becoming a stronger because of her love for Kaito.

ive been absolutely BINGING your cobra kai stuff today (and i owe you a few good comments i think, once i can sort out my thoughts and type them out, cause WOW). but one thing that stuck with me is how you write characters with brain damage, and i was wondering if you had any tips on how you do it? i know that not all brain injuries manifest the same, but id love to get your perspective on it!

also! you have activated my sleeper agent activation phrase lol. some day I am going to come across someone who is into both of my two most recent, most significant fandoms, and then I'll really be in trouble for, uh, literally giving someone a brain injury in every single one of my last five projects. I finished my first draft of a novel on wednesday and guess what! mc also has a brain injury

ohhh god thank you for giving me an opportunity to rant about this topic. I'm not going to pretend that this is going be anything close to comprehensive, I'm gonna keep it buffet-style. the experience that I'm bringing to this is that I am a speech-language pathologist who works with clients with brain injuries, so my experience is biased towards brain injuries that affect communication or swallowing in some way. but this is most brain injuries so we're doing pretty ok. I myself have never experienced a brain injury.

I have no idea how to organize this so I'm going to throw spaghetti at the wall. cut to save your dash, for length. god, the LENGTH. idk come back and read this when you have an afternoon with nothing to do or sth.

Writing a Character with a Brain Injury

as you said, brain injuries don't manifest the same. in fact they can vary wildly. honestly this can be such a gift as a writer, because you can add an interesting wrinkle to pretty much any scene by pulling out a symptom and having it manifest and see where the scene takes you. oh, this character who prides themselves on being stoic is, idk, explaining a plan to their surbordinate? well what if they just start fucking crying because emotional lability post-stroke/tbi is a bitch? what then?

for me, when I write someone with a brain injury, I plan ahead of time what parts of the brain got impacted. I know my way around the brain pretty ok (as much as anyone does), especially in the left hemisphere perisylvian area which is v key with core language, so I can do that. if you want to take writing a brain injury Super Seriously, you could also do that. do a little research, see what happens when certain corners go dark. damage can be super localized and only affect a narrow range of functions, or it can be diffuse, or it can cover big areas of the brain while leaving others alone.

one thing I don't think I've ever seen portrayed realistically in fiction is post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). for many TBI survivors, there is a period post-injury when the formation of new memories is v poor. they can't really get much high-level recovery done in this time frame because learning is on pause until PTA is over and done with. fiction often does retrograde amnesia with brain injuries, but in my experience, PTA is way more of a thing. amnesia surrounding the time immediately before and after the injury itself is also v common.

a fun ("fun") aspect to this stretch of healing is confabulation. This is when, post-TBI, the person makes up fictions (partial or total) that, to some extent, fill in the holes in their understanding of their lives. they are not aware that these fictions aren't true. this also makes them very susceptible to being lied to. go forth and play with that.

insight! insight is something that is so huge with brain injuries. insight is the capacity to recognize one's own difficulties post-TBI. people can get very agitated about this, which is not helped by agitation being very common in the early stages of emerging from a coma. you like to think that you know best how your brain is doing, right? it's YOUR brain. but also, recognizing and assessing your own behaviour is a cognitive function. a function that can go on the fritz when your brain is damaged. one of the first steps towards recovery is often recovering the faculty of being able to recognize that you're not functioning as you were before, and are in fact experiencing Symptoms. think how disorienting and upsetting it would be to not be able to trust your brain to assess how your brain is doing. extrapolate that, empathize with it, and you're already going to resonate more with your brain-damaged character than 99.9% of representations in fiction.

people on this site love talking about executive function, let's get into some executive function. this is our prefrontal cortex damage, and it's one of the more interesting spots to give a character brain damage. that's going to make attention hard (sustaining attention, switching attention from one thing to another and back, both zoning in AND zoning out as needed). processing speed, organizing thoughts, these are all likely to take a hit with this kind of damage.

another one I don't see people talking about! is! initiation! initiation is getting started on something, and also getting yourself to STOP doing something. this is also under the executive function umbrella. from the communication side of things, I see this most in a tangential, rambling, never-stop-talking style of speech; they can't initiate the choice to stop talking. one of the more frustrating aspects of this symptom is that if people haven't met the TBI survivor pre-injury, this is a symptom where people tend almost universally to just assume this has always been part of your personality.

taking that point and running with it: for a lot of executive function symptoms, other characters might assume (if they haven't met them before) that they are just part of the TBI survivor's personality or (if they knew them pre-TBI) that their personality has changed. like it's psychological rather than neurological. people in general are bad at understanding brains! me included, but maybe a little less bad than the average.

your average TBI rehabilitation team will involve, outside of the more obvious figures like a neurologist and your primary care physician: a psychologist, an occupational therapist, a physiotherapist, a social worker and/or case manager, a speech-language pathologist, sometimes a vision therapist/ophthalmologist, sometimes an audiologist. I tell you this to show the breadth of impact on one's life from a TBI.

vision stuff is nuts! your character might have double vision, they might have some neurological blindness. I don't know a lot about occipital lobe damage outside of having to check for it in reading assessments. hemispatial neglect is bonkers, that's where the character can technically SEE both halves of their visual field, but they can't pay attention to half of it. they can't notice it, it's cognitively irrelevant.

I'm also gonna do a disservice to my physiotherapy ("physical therapy" in the US) and occupational therapy girlies by being pretty broad strokes here. I am but a humble SLP. depending on how severe the injury is, where it impacts, the character may have to spend time relearning how to do all those activities that make up a life (cooking, getting dressed, manipulating small objects with their fine motor skills) in OT. likewise, gross motor skills might be impacted. might need to relearn how to walk; one side is often more impacted that the other, again depending on the nature and location of the damage. I'm always hearing about BALANCE being a big PT goal.

the process of eating/drinking and swallowing is extraordinarily complex and frankly it's a miracle we manage it regularly. many many people go through a recovery phase (which might be brief or may carry on into months and even years) of having difficulty with bolus prep (basically, getting the food/drink matter ready to be swallowed) and swallowing. the most significant danger of this is NOT "choking" on foods, the way we usually think about choking. it's more about food/drink material getting down into the lungs without sufficiently coughing it back out, and then they can get a lung infection called aspiration pneumonia. they may need to be on altered solids and/or liquids (e.g. softer, more consistent solids, or thickened liquids; straws not a good idea, nor are mixed-consistency foods), and to use strategies to make sure they're eating safely.

so I've procrastinated my own dang field long enough: communication. (swallowing is also in my field but I don't do a lot of it in my day-to-day) lol I'm a little overwhelmed by the idea of trying to convey any kind of comprehensive idea of how a brain injury can impact communication. so many ways!

maybe the best-known: Aphasia. acquired dysfunction of core language. this may make it more difficult to understand incoming language (reading, listening, seeing others' sign language), or express language (speaking, using sign language, writing), or both. this can mess with expression/reception of individual words, sentence structures, use of prefixes/suffixes/grammatical words. the most severe aphasia is global aphasia, no expressing, no understanding; note! this does not mean they can't think. this is why it drives me fucking nuts when people talk about "thinking in" a second language. language is not the medium of thought, and thought transpires without language. the mildest form of aphasia is anomia, where trying to retrieve the word you want to use is difficult. EXTREMELY common. this is pretty easy to slip into a character's dialogue, just have them stall on a word. less common words are, perhaps predictably, the most impacted. anecdotally, for some reason, "dishwasher" and "safety pin" are almost always hard?? I blame washing machines and paper clips.

big oversimplification, but, if they have expressive aphasia, they know what they want to say, but they can't get it out. if they have pure receptive aphasia, this can manifest as being able to get out a lot of language at a pretty fair clip, but it not being what they want to say; they don't understand what they're saying, and they don't know they're not making sense. if given the choice, I would take receptive aphasia, because expressive aphasia is INCREDIBLY frustrating. I've seen so many adults with expressive aphasia break down crying, it's just so frustrating to know exactly what you want to say and not be able to say it.

TBIs can also mess with the communication between the brain and the muscles responsible for speech, leading to difficulties with coordinating those muscles, which can basically look like mispronouncing words. I would be cautious trying to portray misarticulations in dialogue. if your character has apraxia, maybe restrict it to an out-of-dialogue comment about mispronouncing words, having difficulty putting the sounds in the right order, rather than trying to write it out in dialogue. This brain-muscle communication can also manifest in a family of conditions called dysarthrias, which can lead to slurred speech, it can lead to really tight, strained speech, it can even lead to the TBI survivor sounding drunk (when impacting the same part of the brain that alcohol inhibits when you're drunk).

I don't see a lot of right-hemisphere injuries in my line of work, because in most people the most significant language centre is on the left side of the brain; but, one notable exception is prosody, the melody of speech, which is usually associated with the right hemisphere. injury to the RH can lead to monotone-sounding speech; I'm not going to armchair diagnose timothy omundson but I've often wondered if he had a RH stroke.

there's a real, often incredibly daunting grieving process associated with having had a serious brain injury and realizing that your brain, often your closest physical-world reference point to where the YOU sits in your body, is now different. it might get back to how it was before, it might not. one way or the other, that person will likely need to grieve that.

I often find that people who pride themselves on being intellectual have the hardest time with symptoms of brain injury. when your intellect is very central to your self-concept, it can be very difficult to digest that that part of yourself has been changed, and not in a way that you ever wanted.

So it was funny, I was actually talking with @blramblingx2 about the Pond piece yesterday cause they were looking for an opinion from a Pond critic who wasn't foaming at the mouth, and I think the piece was posted right as the other article was blowing up, which was why today's article wasn't included in the write up.

For the ICYMI crowd, here's what I'm talking about:

I'm not 100% sure this is a 1-to-1 English version of the article given the breadcrumbs are different and the English version was published two days after the Thai language version, but the title and breadcrumbs had this concerning title: "Thai Director Defends His Government-funded Soft Power Film"

This is what he actually said and where the lede was buried and why I had so many concerns with the English version:

“I would like to emphasize this term ‘soft power’ again, because it is very important. People and the media have referred to or reported on the same-sex series as soft power. However, we have never received support. But today it’s starting. I am getting a little support from the government now, but what I really want is the support of the Thai people, who should no longer classify the film as a same-sex film, but as a good film.”

The financial support is international marketing, not in the production of the film. the Thai government had no say in the actual content being produced, which is where I think a lot of people were concerned that given the recent political situation in Thailand.

I'll say this as a summation, I've never doubted that Man Suang would feature a romance between Chat and Khem. I'm not sure where this recent hand-wringing about whether or not it would be a romance alongside being a mystery/historical film came from.

I've also never had any concerns about the art, or Pond's dedication to furthering the artistic vision while refusing let anything in the way of reflecting queer love in all its facets. See: Pool scene and the production loves its queer audience back.

@moerusai actually expressed concern to me the Pond piece was going to be an apologist piece that would brush his handling of the Build/Poi situation under the rug, and I let Mo know that I did not hold back in my opinion of that being a point where a lot of people who were neutral on Pond felt extreme anger about how poorly he handled that situation and made a mockery of its seriousness while at least appearing to side with Build.

That being said, in terms of Pond learning from his mistakes and his recent comments about reflecting, this is what I said as well:

I think the problem with how fandoms behave these days is there's no room for accepting that actors, people working with them, are also changing, and taking into account that people can grow. The Mew from TharnType is not the same person he is today, and that's OK. But for many fans, the state of reality became fixed, and no new information can change how you should feel about someone, despite new information becoming available to fans,

So the tl;dr answer to your question is: I'll believe it when I see it, and I hope Pond keep his word.

But I think another key take away from the article is like, it doesn't matter how we as fans feel about Pond. I can be annoyed at him at times, and not care to see his face, but that doesn't warrant the insane and aggressive vitriol that has been directed at him. Like, isn't there enough MileApo content these days to visit and revisit? What is with people and this weird Pond fixation?

ive talked a little about nl!olipix here and here but tldr oli ""dies"" at the end of empires and runs away and leaves olipelago to greggory. pixelle gets nothing in his will btw which he doesnt really care about on like a physical level because hes more upset about his boyfriend fucking dying but there is a part that stings that hes not even mentioned in the will despite them being so close he feels a little like oh so did that not mean anything to you.. but thags his issue.

the most immediate problem is that greggory is like not competent enough to live alone or maintain the olipelago. sorry. he's still in his shell at this point and like six months old tops he's baby. pixelle was already lowkey his parent because he babysat and hung out with oli a lot so it sort of happens naturally.. plus as a dragon its honestly a bit more like a slightly higher maintenance cat. who can breathe fire once hes out of the shell a couple months down the line. thats scary.

pix wraps up work on the ancient capital and moves back to the city to continue his previous job but things don't work out for .. various reasons. he's literally still like part ghost. but when he moves he takes greggory with him ofc because like he can't leave him alone... pix doesn't actually like children he was really bad with hermes but gregg grows on him. maybe in part because he's not really a child he's a dragon like i said. until. har har.

at about a year old greggory starts mimicking the humans around him a lot better than he was before. like. he starts walking on two legs. and at first pixelle is like lol how cute and then he seriouses because oh shit what the fuck raising dragons is sort of not really that common especially not in this sort of environment. on the rare occasions they've been tamed before they've been wiled beasts and this is an ender dragon which is nigh unheard of. (Violet from arc 1 still exists but is a very difficult and separate case that doesn't apply.) so suddenly instead of a little kittycat this thang is trying to walk and grab things with his little claw hands and vocalising (he doesn't have vocal chords capable of human speech but he does little grunts and stuff it's cute.) pixelle is equal parts fascinated from a scholarly pov but also like oh my god i am not qualified at all for this what the fuuuck

this is the point that makes pixelle sit up and go ok i need to unghost myself because i cant. raise my weird son like this. (his entire ghost thing is a weird metaphor for depression and trauma and grief because all the ghosts in aoyuer are about that. so yea) and then him and greggory go do that and its a whole thing i wont get into but it leads into him entering the land that new life is set in and meeting oli again who he had kind of figured out was alive and was trying to track down but didnt expect it to happen here. and so begins their divorce arc

fun notes though: pixelle calls greggory omelette sometimes as a cute nickname! he suggested that as a name when he was still in his egg. sort of mean. also since gregg can't speak english pix learns and then teaches him sign language ^_^ at the start of new life / arc 3 he's only a basic communicator but can get his point across usually.

oli is by no means a bad dad he's just not a great one either. it's clear he tries very hard and he does love gregg. part of the reason he leaves him is BECAUSE he loves him and he recognises he's not really able to raise him and it would be unfair to drag him along wherever he plans on going post empires... but that doesn't make it right etc etc. Hes aware of that too and feels generally awful about the whole thing... His and greggorys relationship is weird and strained at the start but he tries by god does he try. And they make it work eventually. They have to get through the horrors first though.

So (poll spoilers for anyone who cares) Dorian is a fandom oc for the game honkai star rail but most of his lore I just made up so really the only things you need to know about the game are that it’s set in space and there are cool space gods called aeons, each based around a different path. One of these aeons, the aeon of knowledge Nous (a supercomputer that became a god) sends out letters to those they deem worthy of being geniuses and there’s only been 84 in all of recorded history. So I went. 85 now!!!

Communication in this universe across different planets is handled by Synethesia Beacons, which read brain waves and translates directly what people mean into the best equivalent of the others language. Dorian’s planet, Sepalia (made up by me :3) was rich in the materials used to make these things and the whole thing was very like. US company town bc the planet wasn’t initially hospitable but the Big Space Company, the IPC, terraformed it enough so people could mine it but they controlled the flow of resources and it kinda sucked to live there.

Side note: the architecture of sepalia is basically these giant fucking spires bc the company was like well we need the ground for mining let’s build up, and then people built even higher than that. Bc of this like. Climbing and securing yourself to things is a huge concern and the culture revolves around lot around rope. Thus the bondage thing, it’s very very typical in sepalia bc like. It is so intimate to tie knots for people, to make sure they won’t fall, and that is such a huge part of the daily landscape that it reflects sexually. Dorian only found out that is considered a kink in other places after he left and started being sexually active and it’s still really fucking funny to him. Like to him it’s like the equivalent of someone saying that taking your clothes off or kissing your partner is a kink.

Anyway, tensions between the Sepalian government and the IPC got worse and eventually sepalia was like fuck you ok we’re not going to be a company planet anymore and you’re not going to get any of the synesthesia beacon materials. And the IPC was like fuck you right back, you want us to fuck off, we’ll fuck off, and then who’s going to maintain your fucking atmosphere. And the government was like yippeeee and kinda decided to ignore that last part

So Dorian grew up and got his letter from the genius society pretty early due to Tragic Circumstances (a friend died due to environmental conditions and he resorted to reading everything he could to try and find a some way to make things make sense and was really good at it) and the Sepalian government was like holy shit we have a genius we can make people take us seriously as a real planet now.

So Dorian at 13 became the figurehead of this planet that the government wouldn’t acknowledge was slowly falling apart, which lasted about two years before his mom was like “ok we need out of here” and took him and his sister away and Dorian then had the rest of the galaxy to explore and try and learn about.

He is not exclusively a linguist he knows a lot about a lot of things, but he does study languages and doesn’t use his synethesia beacon as much as he possibly can (he can’t get rid of it, they’re attached to the nervous system lmao).

Currently he is still reading as much as he can, trying to fight the IPC, fighting with other academics, breaking into the other genius’ giant VR project so he and his bestie/nemesis can kill each other repeatedly with no consequences, and just generally hanging out

i really appreciate your post about how people feel about their loved ones getting cosmetic surgery. These "this is so self centered"-replies honestly kinda shocked me. We are allowed to have emotions about the suffering of other people AND also EXPRESS these emotions, what the hell. I hate this policing of what thoughts and feelings you get and don't get to voice. If someone i love gets her features surgically altered i feel upset bc a) i love her and feel horrible about her apparently hating herself/her features so much that she's willing to take such a risk & spend so much money to change them b) i do wonder, if she hated this part of her face or body so much, and mine looks similar, does she also find me ugly? and c) i loved her face. it is a familiar, trusted face, to which i connect feelings and memories and that i would always recognize for the rest of my life, that i looked at for hours, that i maybe even grew up with and saw grow from a child to a unique woman's face. Haven't we long acknowledged that our personal actions often have an impact on women as a whole? Similarly, but kinda the other way around, I continue to draw motivation to never pick up shaving again, despite being very insecure about my body hair, from there being the chance that another woman or girl will see my hairy ass legs (lol) and finally have a representation of a woman who actually leaves her natural bodies as it is. I draw inspiration from the fact that my personal choices can affect other peoples feelings, that i do carry a certain responsibilty. We are all humans, we have emotions and we also hold some power over other people's emotions! Also women who choose to go under the knife and literally risk their lives for an unnecessary procedure are not too fragile to hear the impact their actions have on their loved ones! There is a difference between guilt tripping or emotional blackmailing and letting your loved ones know how their struggles might also affect you! 10-ish years ago my back then friend asked me whether i was still self harming (i had stopped a couple months before that) and when i said no, she said that she was so glad to hear that, bc it broke her heart so much when she learned i did that and she would hate if i still did. And that just gave me a completely new perspective that i had never thought about before.
