OKAY THIS WAS SIMULTANEOUSLY SO HARD AND SO EASY TO DO. i rly wanted to get smth from every album but all except 3 are from rep to evermore fjsjfjsjfkfds oops :)c

anyhoo, in no particular order, my 13 taylor destiel tracks!

2. Last Thing I Googled: "Jeffrey Epstein." I wish Persona 5 was legit and I could just go into this dude's heart and make him confess e v e r y t h i n g. Otherwise than this, all of my Google questions have been about Persona 5.

3. Favorite Musicians:

•Marianas Trench is top of the top, dude. They're extremely talented and my respect and admiration knows no end. I wrote an entire script for a majority of one of their albums, and that story has now become a publishing goal. Let's hope I can revise it without the music and make it its own!

•One Direction used to be my favorite. They're now an honorary mention for the nostalgia and the memories I have (like Liam looking at me and me panicking and him laughing - that was a fun one...if not awkward as frick...) (or my sister trying to theme with Niall and him just not getting it lmbo) (also my mom and I looking around Universal in the pouring rain bc we were told they'd be somewhere around the park, but actually they were hiding in one of the stores, so she and I got chicken and waffles at the Simpson's area instead) (also I got some random dude's autograph because he gave me tickets and I thought "dude, you're the best, you deserve recognition")(I still have that guy's autograph)(he was great)

•Passenger holds a place in my heart for their All the Little Lights album. That cheers me up like nothing else. It's just like, "Yeah, life sucks, but that's okay. We can still find happiness, we just gotta accept the pain as well and learn to move on from it." The most INFP artist tbh.

•Sleeping at Last because of his Enneagram songs mainly, but also because the thought he puts into his music is incredible and deserves to be noted. He's just so talented and I love supporting him.

•Lauren Aquilina because I relate on so many levels??? She just tells it like it is, but in such a poetic and beautiful way. She's an incredibly talented writer and singer. There's not one song of hers that I don't like tbh. Also, I can't listen to Tobacco in my Sheets without crying at the brother part because literally same @my bro and mom.

•Erutan!!! She plays all the instruments herself!!! And does all the singing!!! And writing!!! And her songs are so unique and beautiful!!! I feel like a little elven maiden walking through the forest gathering herbs and flowers in mid-spring every time I listen to her.

•NF. He's just so raw and real and he faces parts of human nature and christianity that we often want to pretend aren't there. He does so straightforwardly and without holding back too. It's incredible. Also, hearing his testimony pour out through his music inspires me with every song.

4. Song stuck in my head: well, after writing that, now it's Tobacco in my Sheets. But, I've been singing I'd Rather be Me from the Mean Girls Musical a lot too lately. Today it's also been Reckless Love by Cory Asbury as well. I've got like 20 different tabs in my brain and at least 3 of them are playing music a good majority of the time.

8. Amount of sleep?: hahahahahhahahahahahhaahhaha. I legit don't have a sleep schedule. For the past few weeks due to work, it's been about 3-6 hours though. I go to sleep anywhere between 1 and 3, then wake up sometime around 6:30-7:30, unless I'm off work, then I wake up around 9-11.

9. Lucky number?: Seven! My birthday (9/7/99), my enneagram, and my favorite number. (Lucky letter is J).

10. What are you wearing?: purple pjs that have gray French Bulldogs with little green sweaters on and a bunch of other designs. They say, "Excuse my French" too.

11. Dream job: To own a cat café!! I'm working at making that dream a reality now. Being an actress, director, or writer are also high up there. I love the entertainment industry.

12. Instruments: I don't play any, but I'd love to learn the guitar, piano, or violin tbh.

13. Languages: Learning French and ASL now.

Also, I went through duolingo the other day and did the first lesson in all of the languages I'm interested in. French (of course), Japanese, and Russian were the easiest and I actually really enjoyed studying them further afterwards.

Spanish, Korean, and German were extremely difficult and though I'd like to learn them, and really every language tbh, I think I'll put them off for now ahah.

It’s been disclosed that he played for the song ‘Shadow Tag’ on Ken Kamikita’s new album! Kamikita is a singer songwriter, also once known as KK, who belches out vivid vocals from his diaphragm while the substructure of skilled technique is there as instrumentals, holding it together sturdy. His songs are very thought-provoking alone, yet music isn’t his only reign as he writes scripts for his shows, he puts careful consideration into his visuals: and abracadabra! ygarshy is continuing to be supporting Wasureranne yo with concerts for the summer.Concurrent reports consist of ygarshy smiling, poker facing to hide his smile, yet his smile seeping out because of Shibata’s noble passion for music. Shibata will do risqué shouts or gatling release the word "sex" out of his mouth, when which yg will subtly sip his water in a means to dodge, or just knifesharp glare at him. I love these drunken bards. Wasureranee yo's twitter posts clips of them performing after ever show also!

Also Wasurerannee yo with The 50 Kaitenz↑ good. June 8th was the Kankaku Pierrot x Hitorie concert, which was originally meant to be a joint show for their tour, yet was now turned into a jamboree of respects and thunder... Rie themselves were unable to attend yet Kan-ero nevertheless performed a cover of Ao, Polaris, and clenched a spiritual presence...! The cover of Ao is a tear trenchcoat I'm a trench of water... Kan-ero so good...

I was finally able to tell Shinoda-san that “These lyrics are way too long.”. For the sake of today I had to spend the whole week sleeping on the couch, as my bed is practically buried by all the alphabet He wrote, yet still I simply want to thank him for leaving us with so many words. They’re really all so cool. I’m sorry for being unable to sing them well. Let’s meet up again soon. Is Tanktop Shoutai's new video out yet They're a posse of blurred out faces with burlesque bases. Their current series is one where they dress up as Yugioh characters, roleplay them with accurate voices and cult-like enthusiasm, before the instigation of the series’ famous ~Shadow Games~ together. Which are all uhh, epic card games, yeah, like tabletop Jenga or or Mariomaker or electric Russian roulette, pick them up like they’re Kuribos. It’s a riot.

I’m sure I’ve said this for the umpteenth time now but, my favorite album from syrup16g is “delayed" syrup16g are an indie band who began in 1993 and keep resurging again to pop off. With performances in Budoukan and high Oricon points on their back. This pivotal album of theres is mellow with whimpering instruments and ephemeral sounding visuals and it's really nice, thank you SND.

Media outlets have been making misleading headlines like “A manga opposing the legalization of euthanasia”, and I bet there’s a lot of people are blindly dissing Death Harassment now Death Harassment is a comic written by Yoshida Yori, challenging the problems which could come with euthanasia, and a society which might pressure departure unto the unwilling. Euthanasia has been becoming a uproarious subject in Japan, ever since a woman fled to Sweden because she suffered brain diseases, and wanted to die while still preserving her sanity and dignity. People are now starting to welcome the prospect and yearn for a mercy fate but, please consider the demerits and the demoralization also, is the message. I translated the comic for fun also here.

I saw Tokyo Syoki Syodo in concert for my first time today. It was the best. I seriously thought I was gonna burst into tears. It might be a long time since I was last this excited to see a band live - it's been a long time since I even saw a concert live but still,,, I was surprised by how much of the lyrics to Saisei Button I subconsciously remembered. It just shows that Tokyo Syoki Syodo's songs are that good. They are a group who indulge in the typicality of cutesy culture, instagram filters, sparkling make-up, and all while flexing the power to whack you with whamming hard rock. He mentioned them again in his June 9th twitcast also, calling them natural and epiphanic to how bands can just be just as they are. I have no doubts that this is my top-played song these past few months. This is my anthem. -Saisei Rock, their most recent music video, check it out! I don’t even know how many years I’ve lived at this point but it’s not commonplace to find a song this great.

This example will only be understood by super like-minded folk, but I haven’t felt this way since I got obsessed with Sakasama Cider.

He’s expressed countless times how much he likes this song and the artist, Gucha Gucha's, Though the story behind SND’s partiality may be ultimately uncertain, it can be easily understood from one listen. What an article. Don’t be releasing things like this into the world. Do they have no dignity, mishandling words while trying to write about the subject of words. Emo, in terms of usage and genre, has especially been through a lot of change. The picture shown is SND’s face was drawn in the background of Meshi ni Shimashou(Let’s have some food!), a manga by Kobayashi Doom. It’s a story which digs into the lives of a a manga artist and her assistant, who bask in the dying embryos of production and then cook meals with crazy twists or gimmicks to restore their “MP”. There’s an official sneak-peak preview of it here! It’s only available in JP though… If you like the look of it please feel free to yell at your local manga provider to officially translate it, Kobayashi Doom is someone SND is so undeniably influenced by. Especially their series Negi nee-san. A webcomic about a surreal girl drowned in surreal antics. It’s usually rooted in nonsense and that’s the grandest appeal. The visuals consist of copy-pasted collages, intricate professional art dynamics, cute girls, to stoic jokes such as “’seven eleven is an integer so seven & I is a complex number” and mostly references to mathematics or science or Jojo. The most parroted one is “Yes” “Not yes”. Also worthy of mention is that things resembling Negi-neesan’s various nameless beasts will show up as backdrop etc. in SND’s manga Chikyuu Monogatari. And most importantly here, there’s even a comic about Shinoda on that link, with the Let’s Meal characters! It reads: Madare ”Who's that?" Omega "From the band 'Hitorie',His name is Shinoda and he seems to be a zealous fan of mine, (sign reads: zealous whatever food hall) He told me he wants me to experience his recent works so he sent me the mp3"Madare “Ooh Isn’t Hitorie that [insert amazing praise here]“. Kobayashi Doom is strangely important for SND’s character development.

I recorded drums for Sasaki Sayaka’s song, the ending theme for 'Ultraman Taiga’. I used a big and powerful setup for this. The broadcasts start on 7/6. I can’t wait. Also Taro's son is crazy. Ultraman Taro's son is the main character of this new spinoff tokusatsu series! The ending song is called “Hitotsubishi” and will premiere along the first episode, I’ll update this if an official video arrives later, so we can listen to it! Monday’s installment of Arrow ended with Curtis Holt, aka Mr. Terrific (Echo Kellum), bidding adieu to Star City for a job in Washington, D.C. With that onscreen move comes Kellum’s official departure from the CW superhero show as a series regular, EW can now reveal.

In ‘Star City Slayer,” Curtis received a job offer from the Kohler Humanitarian Institute in DC because of the technology he’s developed. As he weighed his options, the team started tracking a serial killer, which led to Curtis using his tech to save Dinah (Juliana Harkavy) after the killer slit her throat. That feat helped him make the decision to take the job, because it would allow him to help as many people as possible. Diggle (David Ramsey) tried to get him to stay by offering him a promotion at ARGUS, but Curtis turned him down and handed Helix over to his partner in crime Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) before leaving.

Kellum, on the other hand, made the decision to leave Arrow after four seasons because he wanted to spend more time with his family in Los Angeles and is interested in pursuing other ventures in music, writing, and directing. However, both Kellum and executive producer/showrunner Beth Schwartz assure EW that this isn’t the last of Mr. Terrific.

“I love working with Echo, who is an absolute delight and joy,” Schwartz tells EW in a statement. “Echo has always brought humor and heart to Arrow. Curtis is such a fun character to write for and he’ll be greatly missed. We haven’t seen the last of Mr. Terrific.”

Below, Kellum opens up about his decision to leave, his favorite moments on the show, and what’s next for him creatively.

Entertainment Weekly: How did your exit come about? Was it your decision, the producers’, or something mutual? Echo Kellum: I had a conversation with [then-showrunner] Marc Guggenheim in season 6. It was my idea. I have kids—I have a twelve-year-old kid—and it was just starting to feel like I should be back home more. First of all, I love working on this show. I love the cast, the producers. It’s the best cast I’ve ever worked with, the best studio. They’ve taken such great care of me and made me feel like I’ve been there since season 1. So all of this has been very bittersweet because I actually feel very crestfallen, because it’s so tough to leave such an amazing show. But I think for me, it just boiled down to family, and also I just wanted to try a couple of creative ventures in my life. I’m working on music, directing, and writing now. I still love acting, but it’s something I’m not looking at as the top thing of my career anymore. I’m looking at my career in a different light. So, I approached Marc. We had a long conversation about family and fatherhood and all those things, and he totally got where I was coming from. You know, Warner Bros. and the network were so generous to be able to let me exit gracefully. What I will say, this isn’t the end of Curtis. I’ll definitely come back as much as they want me back, and visit and guest-star and whatnot. So, it’s not the end of him. I guess it’s really a family decision overall, just to be a little closer to my kids. I’ve been around my kids more during the school parts of the year the most that I have been in the last four years, even in the past month. It was definitely not an easy decision.

Both Arrow and the Arrowverse as a whole have this sort of open-door policy where actors have the flexibility to come and go as they need. Did that make it easier for you to approach Marc and Beth about this? EK: Absolutely. I’ve know things that have happened with actors in the past, so that was definitely something that made it easier to broach the conversation. I went to them just to have a conversation—not being like, “Hey, I want off!” but just to gauge where they were, how they felt about how I was feeling, and all I got was full support. They didn’t want me to leave. I’m so thankful that they wanted me to be part of the show in the first place, and they still want me to be part of it. So, it’s definitely an open-door policy for me. I’ll come back any time they need me to come back, for sure, but right now? It’s really nice to be around family more and take care of these creative ventures that I’ve been working on in LA as well.

The episode ends with Curtis deciding he can put his tech to better use in Washington after he gets his job offer. How did you feel about the way Curtis was written off? EK: I liked it because it’s still innately Curtis wanting to help other people. He’s leaving in a way where he can try to have a bigger impact in trying to help other people in the world. I really appreciate that, because I hope it leaves open the door for him to pop back in every once in a while until they get to their 300th episode. [Laughs]

What was your last day on set like? EK: It was very emotional. I definitely cried. Everyone cried. It was really difficult because they are my family and all of us have such a great rapport, on-screen and off-screen. The last day was really tough. A lot of tears, a lot of cakes. But the last day, we shot in this spooky house, so it was very interesting. I feel good about my decision overall, but I’m going to miss all of them, miss being the trenches with them every day and laughing on set and just being silly, and then also just telling this amazing story that our amazing writers are crafting. So it’s just definitely very bittersweet. I’m exited for what’s in the future, but it’s tough to leave such an amazing show.

What do you think you’ll miss about Curtis, this character you’ve been with for four years? EK: I just like his charm. He’s so silly and he brings a lot of levity to a lot of the darkness that the show can permeate. I’m gonna miss that about him—that he just has a great outlook on life, like his positivity. It doesn’t mean he hasn’t dealt with hardships and doubting himself and whatnot, but I think I can pull that from him, of just being positive and looking at the bright side of things, and trying to do the best I can for my fellow man. I’m really going to miss playing those parts.

Looking back at these past four seasons, what was your favorite moment or episode on the show? EK: One of my favorite moments was getting to put on the Terrific 2.0 costume. That was such an hugely empowering moment for me personally as an actor. It was so great. But as you say that, the moment that comes back to me again and again is in episode 2 of season 5. Me, Rick Gonzalez, and Madison McLaughlin, who played Artemis, we were all having a scene. We’re training, Oliver’s got the bell. Oliver and Felicity have a moment, and we’re just in the background just kind of chilling and improvising some banter in character. Then, Rick says, “Hey, we on a TV show.” We are all still in character. [Laughs] It was just such a perfect moment from Wild Dog. As the character, I thought he would say something like this. “Look, there’s cameras everywhere,” and we’re like, “Dude, what are you talking about?” That moment was so funny and so meta. We talk about that moment so often. We’ll be shooting a scene and I’m like, “Rick, we on a TV show, man,” and then we just start laughing and cracking up. That is really one of the moments that touches my heart. Honestly, the moment that I really think about is the first moment when I got to meet Felicity and came in that first day. I just remember how amazing it was to feel welcomed and a part of that universe from the jump. That’s a moment that really holds true to my heart. Honestly, there are a couple of episodes from this season: The episode where I got to speak French, that was so much fun. The episode where I got to flip the script on Diaz (Kirk Acevedo) was so much fun too. I really like where they were going with him. I hope there can be some type of a future for him Arrowverse. It won’t be on an episodic basis, but I’m really proud of the work I got to do with this character and thankful that they let me play with him for four years.

Have you started talking to the writers about when that potential return might happen, or is that still far off? EK: We’ve had some discussions. Nothing’s been finalized at this point, but we’ve definitely discussed that aspect and they definitely made sure and clear that they want Curtis to come back. I can’t give you any definitive episodes or storylines, but it’s definitely something I’m 100 percent open to doing, and I believe they’re open to doing it too, so it should definitely work out at some point in the future.

If things aligned where you were available and they wanted you back, would you want to be involved in next year’s big “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover? EK: Of course, 100 percent! That’s going to be so epic and amazing! I would love to be a part of those crossovers.

Is there anything more you can share about what you have planned post-Arrow? EK: I’m working on music right now. It’s been a labor of love. I’ve been working on an album for the past two years, but now I’m afforded the time to actually focus on it and really get into the studio and bang some stuff out. I’ve been shooting some things. I just shot a short; got some financing for it and shot that. And writing a bunch of scripts. I have a feature that we’re out trying to sell right now and a pilot we’re out trying to sell right now. Everything is very irons-in-the-fire, but I’m just very confident in my future and my work ethic. I know it’s only a matter of time before things fall down.

What can we expect from your first album? EK: I mainly do hip-hop. I love being an MC and rapping. It’s something I’ve been doing since I was in high school. My brother was a hip-hop artist, and we lost him in 2006, unfortunately, so I’m trying to make something to honor him and everything he was doing. My music has always been a passion. I’m not doing it to make a million bucks. I’m just doing it for the love because I just want to put out my own creative venture in music and still getting some of the pieces together is just exciting.

Is there anything else you wanted to add? EK: I think the only thing I want to do is just thank all the fans for giving me a shot. For all the fans that loved me and for all the fans that didn’t love me so much, thanks for watching, thanks for caring, thanks for making me feel like I was part of something special, because it is a special show. I will see you guys in the future on other projects. And excelsior!

Trench: Bandito (Chapter 1)

A/N: Help, I’ve been obsessed with the new TØP album and I accidentally started writing an AU about it. Whoops. Don’t know how exactly this is going to go, but let’s just go with it.

Chapter 1 - Bandito

“I’ll come back, I’ll promise.”

The words echoed in John’s head as he lay in his makeshift bed, staring at the ceiling as his insomnia ticked away at the hours. It was a common topic that his mind caused him to wander to in these dark hours of silence. The boy with the dark eyes and even darker hair who had ... gone. He was gone. That’s all he was to John now. He said he’d come back. He never did.

“You sure about that? You know how you tend to get sometimes.” Smitty laughed, filling the air with a serenity to it John loved holding onto and hated letting go.

“No, I’m sure about this. We’ll be this ... dynamic duo. Unstoppable. Just the two of us.”

Two: The magic number. But it was never two; only himself alone and pretending to be brave without him. Without the man with the platinum blond hair and rings adorning his fingers. The one with the vape pen on him at all times and a fashion sense almost as crazy as his. Smitty missed John sometimes, but he couldn’t go back. Instead he was left to beat himself up over the mistakes as he tried to reconcile with the promises he broke.

“If you’re so sure about it.” John jabbed at him, cracking a smirk. “Just don’t get into much trouble, alright?”

“I’m legally obligated not to answer this question.”

“Smit ..” John tried to be serious in his tone, but the giggles that were beginning to slip out undermined it all.

“Alright, I will. As long as you do yourself, mister.”

John didn’t listen. Habits die hard and the one he knew Smitty wanted him to leave was still in his life. But Smitty wasn’t here to dictate what he did. Just ... controlled his inner demons sometimes when things became too quiet and silent. Fuck him, he’s stupid. At least, that’s what Tyler said the one time he opened up about the mystery man of his past.

“I swear.” There was a silence hanging between them. But not an awkward silence; a comfortable one that hung between ... old friends ... that didn’t want to let go of each other. “I’m going to miss you, Smitty.”

“You know I wouldn’t do this is I didn’t have to.”

“I know. I’m just ... scared.”

Smitty looked down at the streets below him; his toes hanging off the edge as he sat on top of one of the taller building in the city. He wasn’t scared of the distance between him and the ground. He was scared that he was back. Scared that he was back in Dema with John and the rest of the Touch Tips. Scared of what they’d think of him, with his white hair and mismatched contacts that he didn’t need to see. Would they see who he was before, or just look at him like The Ghost he was.

“Hey.” Smitty lifted his arm and pressed his hand against John’s cheek. The other man folded himself into the touch, . “I told you I’ll be back. And I’m not breaking that promise. Look, I’m scared to. But as long as I can hold onto you then what happens beyond these won’t stop me.”

John paused, letting the words build up in his throat. “Just ... don’t forget me.”

“Forget you? Never.”

Well, that’s one promise at least he kept.

John rose from the bed, crossing what little space he could call his own to the nearby window. The lights of the city twinkled above him as he breathed in an effort to calm down his suddenly racing heartbeat. No stars stared back at him; just the darkness of the night and the faint glow of the moon behind one of the towering skyscrapers. He tried so hard to let the scenery take his mind somewhere else but his thoughts wouldn’t float away from the one subject in the entire world he didn’t want to think about.

“You have to forget him.” He mumbled to himself. “Just let go.”

“Good. Wanted to make sure I was doing my job right as your personal annoyance.”

“Shut up, Jahn.” Smitty giggled, playfully shoving the other man away from him. “One more word from you and I’ll have the world record for quickest broken promise.”

“Which is?” John stepped closer as he teased Smitty on.

“I’m coming back. Broken in 5 mi-seconds. 5 second broken promise.”

“You could never leave me if you tried.”

Smitty rose from the ledge and stood at its edge, barely gripping the railing behind him for support. He straightened his backpack and once more looked down to see the little figures on the sidewalk below. Maybe one of those blobs were the many people whom he left without a second glance. Maybe one of them was part of his problems that he hoped to disappear with him. He closed his eyes, getting ready to fall back into what limited time he had before everything was to eventually crash into him.

“You can do this, man.” Smitty mumbled to himself to hopefully calm what little nerves he had. “Just let go.”

1. You’re in the Game Grumps studio and Bonham and Danny are singing a song together while you and Arin are reviewing the power hour in post. At one point Danny takes it up a few notes to try to harmonize. It sounds nice for a second, but then it sounds terrible. “Dammit Dan, I lost the note cause you tried to harmonize.” How does he respond and what do you and Arin say?

Dan: you should have kept it. Stick your finger in your ear.

Arin: It sounded good for a second.

Me: I can’t harmonize for shit.

2. You’re in the car with Bonham and Arin and Danny on your way to get lunch. When you get to where you’re going, Bonham tries to get out of the back of the car, but her foot gets stuck between the seat and the door, and she falls out of the car and lands on her side. The three of you just watched it happen, but she springs up immediately, “That was fun, let’s go.” How do the three of you respond?

Me: Are you ok?

Dan: You’re something else.

Arin: Let’s not so that again

3. You and Danny are talking in the Game Grumps studio one day, and Arin and Bonham are nowhere to be found. You’re having a nice time. Ross comes up to you at one point and says, “You guys should come see this, it’s crazy.” You and Danny follow him, and find Arin and Bonham taste testing weird shit that Matt and Ryan (Supermega, fellow Game Grumps) are mixing. How’s it going when you arrive? What are Matt and Ryan giving them? What do they all say when you and Danny arrive?

They’re gagging and Matt and Ryan are making different cocktails out of things like escargot, caviar, and calamari. They look at us and Matt and Ryan are like, “Wanna join?” While Bons and Arin scream, “DON’T!”

4. You and your band are finally finished with a late night concert and meet and greet. Danny, Arin, Suzy, and Ross were there, and when you see them, Ross says, “Geez guys, you look like hell.” “Yeah, you look like something they serve at 2:30 in the morning at IHOP.” Danny says after hugging Bonham. How do you and Bonham respond, and what do the Grumps say in response?

He goes to hug me and after I’ve been hugging him for a bit he goes to move when Kevin goes, “Don’t move. She fell asleep.”

Danny: Jesus she must have been tired.

Suzy: Aww, she looks so sweet sleeping on your shoulder.

Arin: Besides the fact that she’s drooling a bit.

Bons: We’re all exhausted. She usually passes out on the tour bus about this time.

5. Bonham is doing Danny’s makeup for the NSP one-night-only performance on a talk show. They’re in the room next to yours and at one point you hear her yell, “Dammit, just fucking hold still!” You go see what’s happening, and Danny is having none of the makeup thing. “It’s tickling my face!” How do they respond to you coming in, and does he ever get his makeup on?

Danny looks over to me and goes, “How can you do this on a daily basis for your concerts? Jesus.”

Bons: Stop looking over at BabyCarrot and look at me.

He finally does get his makeup on.

6. You’re eating lunch with the Grumps and Bonham one day, and out of nowhere Danny says, “Want to see a dumb trick?” “Sure,” Bonham says. He then proceeds to put a small piece of bread in his mouth, spit it into the air, and catch it in his mouth. “Ta da,” he says through his full mouth. How do you, Bonham, and Arin respond?

Me: You're a human canon!

Bons: That’s awesome!

Arin: No it’s not it’s gross.

7. Danny is speculating on ideas for the next NSP album and he says, “It would be neat to use a melodica, but we don’t have one.” Instantly, Bonham says, “I have one.” Instead of gratitude, his initial response is, “Why do you have a melodica?” “If you need weird instruments, I’m your guy.” How do you and Danny respond?

Me: Where do you think we get all those awesome instruments for our albums?

Danny: Awesome! I may have to hit you up for some.

8. Bonham is in the studio working on her solo cover album, and one day you and Danny and Arin decide to surprise her by bringing her lunch. When you get there, you find her lying on the floor with her eyes closed and The Last Unicorn playing and she’s singing along. The song ends and she still hasn’t noticed that you’re there. Danny says, “You were singing my song.” She jumps a little and says, “When did you guys get here?” How do the three of you respond?

Me: We brought you lunch. We’ve been here for a majority of the song.

Danny: You like it that much?

Arin: Why are you on the floor?

9. You’re eating lunch with Bonham and Arin and Danny, and at one point Danny asks, “Hey Bonham, have you ever been in bed with somebody and called them the wrong name?” She’s taken off guard, and says, “Wha–no? How would that even work? Just like, ‘unh, Batman, take me…’ What even, man?” This for some reason makes him laugh uncontrollably. How do you and Arin respond and what does Danny say when he’s done laughing?

Me: I almost called Kevin Nikki once but caught myself before I did.

Arin: How did that go over?

Danny: Batman? Seriously that’s the best name you could have used as an example.

10. Danny and Arin discovered your band’s song “through the ages”, where each member of your band was dressed as a different stage of life (Sean was the baby, Bonham was the kid, Linus was the teenager, you were the adult, and Erik was the old man. I can’t find it looking back but I think you know the one). They’re admiring the different looks, but in the scene when Bonham and Sean are playing they start losing their shit. “What’s so funny?” you ask. Arin says, “She pretends to be so fuckin serious all the time but then this…” He trails off laughing and Dan says, “The emotions I feel inside from the cuteness is unbearable.” How do you respond, and what does Bonham say?

Me: Yep, Bons is a big cutie-pie. She’s always been since we first met and I love her for it.

Bons: I AM NOT! I am serious and I can punch you if you wrong me.

I come up behind her and hug her from behind, “You’re a Cutie-Pie!” Danny runs up and hugs her screaming, “Cuddle puddle!!” and then Arin joins in.

11. Arin learned that Bonham likes guitar hero so he and Dan come to you two one day and suggests that you and her join them on guest grumps to play it. “We’re all musicians so it’ll be fun.” How do the two of you respond, and do you do it? If you do, how does it go?

Me: We can but be prepared to have your asses beat.

Bons: Hell yeah!

It goes well and of course Bonham beats all our asses.

1) Your singer never hugs anyone unless he is really close to them or really likes them. One day, while you’re about to start a Power Hour, she comes up and hugs Danny from behind, “Hi, Danny.” Arin goes, “What the fuck? Where’s my hug?” Your singer looks under Danny’s arm (because he’s nine inches taller than her), “You don’t deserve a hug yet, Arin. Danny is just very huggable, kind of like Kevin.” How do you, Dan, and Arin respond?

2) You’re working on your album with NSP and your singer really wants to cover Same Old Situation by Mötley Crüe. You’re discussing it with Danny and your band members when Sean pipes up, “What is that song about anyway? I never got it.” How do you, your singer, Danny, Linus, and Erik respond?

3) Nikki and Tommy thought it’d be a great idea to have you and your singer dance as some of the strippers in Crüe’s music video for Girls Girls Girls. While filming parts, Vince or Tommy would either wolf whistle at you and your singer or scream, “Look like you’re having fun up there, dammit!” One time, your singer screams back, “I’m not a fucking stripper. I’d rather be the one placing the dollar bills in the girls’ panties.” How do you, Tommy, Nikki, Vince, and Mick respond?

4) Your singer made you swear to never tell Kevin that she dated Nikki before she dated him. One day, Kevin comes to you with a box and slams it down on the table so hard it makes you jump, “What’s this?” He slides it over to you and you open it to find...compromising pictures of Nikki and your singer when they were drunk on a tour before she met Kevin. How do you respond and what happens once your singer gets home?

5) Your band has just started and you need to find stage outfits. One day, your band, Randy, Rudy, and Kevin are in the studio when you hear Sean ask, “What the fuck are you wearing?” And you turn around to see your singer in leather pants, thigh-high heeled leather boots, a long leather trench coat, a layered shirt and a black top hat on top of a black wig. “What? I wanted to experiment. Although on the walk here I got quite the looks.” Sean replies, “Yeah, because you look stupid.” How do you, Erik, Linus, Randy, Rudy, and Kevin respond?

6) You, your singer, Kevin, Rudy, and Nikki are all drinking at your singer and Kevin’s house. Dan and Arin are there too but are not drinking. Your singer gets really quiet and goes and stands out on the balcony. This would not be odd except its only 15 out and your singer doesn’t have a jacket. Soon the rest of you come out. You’re the first one to your singer and she goes to you, “What do you think would happen if something happened to me? Would anyone care?” she looks back over the balcony, “At least the criticism would stop.” How do you, Kevin, Rudy, Nikki, Danny, and Arin respond?

7) Your singer is still with Kevin onstage after she kissed him. And Rudy, Carlos, and Frankie are getting annoyed. The crowd keeps screaming, “Kiss your wife again!” And your singer won’t leave the stage. What do you do to get her off the stage?

8) You and Rudy are Mal, Eddie, and Roxanne’s godparents. One day, your singer pulls you and Rudy aside while the kids are playing and goes, “God forbid, if anything happens to Kevin and I. You’ll take care of our babies, right?” You can see the worry and fear behind her eyes as she goes from looking at you to looking at the three of them. How do you and Rudy respond?

9) Your singer takes you, Rudy, and Kevin with her to her parents’ house to take care of their chicken while they’re on vacation. You, Rudy, and Kevin are upstairs watering the plants when you hear the door open and your singer scream, “No, Hei Hei!” The three of you turn around to see the chicken running up the stairs and your singer chasing after it, “Get back here you fucking chicken!” How do you, Rudy, and Kevin respond? Do you help her catch the chicken?

10) Sean is still being an ass to your singer while in the studio. She’s exhausted from taking care of her kids and one time, she just bursts into tears, “I can’t take this. I’m exhausted. I need sleep but we have to finish this. And Kevin is so great and he takes care of our kids but he’s so busy at work right now and I just...” How do you, Erik, Linus, and Sean respond?

11) You, Kevin, your singer, and your singer’s sister are all sitting on your singer and Kevin’s couch. Your singer is reading and the three of you are watching a movie. At one point, your singer’s sister looks at her and goes, “Can you stop breathing? It’s annoying.” Your singer closes her book and goes, “I’ll just go in my room since my very presence seems to piss you off when you’re already in a piss ass mood.” “Why don’t you disappear? It’ll make my life a hell of a lot easier.” Your singer leaves the room. What do you and Kevin say to her sister?

12) You’re on tour with War Angel and Rudy, Kevin, and Dan and Arin are with you. One day, you’re looking for your singer and Danny comes out to you, Arin, and Kevin and goes, “You have to see this.” He takes you to the back of the bus where you find Rudy and your singer cuddled together sleeping with your singer’s face in Rudy’s neck. How do you, Arin, and Kevin respond and what do your singer and Rudy say when they wake up?

shay’s favorite albums of 2018

10. Hivemind by The Internet - TI are insanely underrated and definitely helped me remember how much I adore R&B music. I literally love the bass lines so much - I’ve learned about half of the ones off this record, honestly. Syd’s vocals are amazing as ever, seamless and sexy and gorgeous, and I just, I love R&B music so much, gotta get into more soul shit. Favorite track: Bravo.

9. Sweetener by Ariana Grande - Somehow Ari flew under my radar for years; I simply did not care about her, and rarely heard her music on the radio, let alone sought it out. But some friends succeeded in getting me into it, and now I respect her as a singer and a person. She’s been through hell, and I admire her strength. Not to mention she’s incredibly talented as a singer. I have a hard time with pop records, because of the lack of substance and depth, but this record is a look into a person I think we’d come to forget was a person at all; it’s all her feelings, her heart on her sleeve, and it’s awesome. Not to mention her voice is literally so damn pleasant to listen to, I could fall asleep to it, haha. Favorite track: Successful.

8. Dirty Computer by Janelle Monae - Miss Monae literally has so much going for her. She’s so immensely talented at everything, and after her success in the film industry, it was nice to witness her return to music. Dirty Computer is fun, personal, and reminds you that Janelle deserves a lot more attention and admiration as a musician, because she does some really innovative and unique stuff that is always something special to behold. She’s a damn good rapper, too, and the accompanying short film to this record was really cool. Favorite track: Screwed.

7. Pray for the Wicked by Panic! At The Disco - After being a fan for literal ages, I finally saw Panic this year, so that was pretty damn cool. Pretty much DoaB Part Two, but that’s not a bad thing. The music is fun, Brendon’s vocals are as awesome as ever, the production is smooth as hell, and the songs were a damn blast live. A little too uppity for me, but several of the songs have been on replay at times. Favorite track: One of the Drunks.

6. Trench by Twenty One Pilots - I have a love-hate relationship with 21p, and I’m not emo anymore, so I nearly didn’t even listen to this record, but I did, and I, grudgingly, liked it very much. It doesn’t deviate significantly from the sound of Blurryface, but incorporates a lot more bass in (which I appreciate, as a bassist). It’s also notable this album was lighter in tone, at least sonically. That’s nice. Had a bit of punk, in there, a New Wave sound, almost. Pretty interesting. And deep subject matter. I wish this band hadn’t been spoiled for me. Damn. Favorite track: Bandito.

5. Queen by Nicki Minaj - A truly fitting title. Nicki’s always exuded a majestic sort of power, a confidence, strength, and sexiness we all can admire, and she’s never faltered in that, but she’s definitely at her top form here. Favorite track: Barbie Dreams. The Biggie-sampled beat makes an already awesome song even better. This is essentially Nicki’s Control; honest, biting, but also wonderfully comedic and light-hearted. I will literally never forget listening to this for the first time, absolutely awed at every rapper she managed to playfully go at, and how clever each sneak-diss was.

4. KOD by J. Cole - Cole’s been my favorite for years, and each of his recent albums have resonated with me deeply because of how genuine he comes across, even when he’s rapping about the typical things a rapper might rap about. Somehow Cole does it in a unique way and always makes it his own, so I never tire of the same topics. And he’s real, real as fuck; unapologetic and confident, but not assholish or excessively cocky. I really applaud him for that. Favorite track: 1985. Cole’s proudly embracing the fact that he’s not a youngin in the rap game anymore, and taking the role of a older figure, a wise one who advises his younger peers to reconsider their careers and their admittedly slim chances of remaining relevant. It’s brutally honest, harsh but not cruel, and absolutely admirable. Not the mention the beat is chill as fuck. Whole thing gives me goosebumps; easily one of the highlights of Cole’s career.

3. Kamikaze by Eminem - Okay, I’m a former hardcore stan who’s turned critical in recent years, but this record fully blew me away. Marsh got relevant again! With the dope flows! Damn! One of my favorite parts of this record was the reactions - watching people remember that Em is not one to be fucked with. Not to mention the now-iconic MGK beef. What a bunch of horseshit. Killshot totally roasted the dude, though. Favorite track: The Ringer. What a way to open a record! Holy shit. I re-listened to this one repeatedly because it was so unexpectedly incredible, with the way the flow is changed up frequently, and the wordplay never falters, clever as ever. Renewed a lot of people’s faith in Em’s abilities, I think; myself included.

2. Iridescence by Brockhampton - In last year’s post I said how excited I was for what the future had in store for BH; and boy, was this year a good one for them. On this record, despite the absence of Ameer, they hold their own without him; Matt, Joba, and Dom even seem to step up to the plate, in fact, and each member spits fire, so that the manic energy from the Saturation Trilogy remains. Said trilogy helped them establish their winning song-writing and production formula, and this record polishes it. Favorite track: Weight. Absolute goosebumps. The whole track has an otherworldly energy, but the transition from Joba’s verse into Dom’s is especially visceral. Joba’s holds an enthusiastic nihilism of sorts, and optimistic perception of life’s pain, while Dom’s is deeply depressive and harrowing, his voice full of a hurt and his words holding a wisdom beyond his years. It’s a beautiful track, through and through.

1. Post Traumatic by Mike Shinoda - This album pretty much saved me this year. I’m very thankful to Mike for putting his feelings to music, because these tracks helped me sort out mine, and I connected to each individual song in a way I haven’t in a long time. I would actually kill to go to a show of his; it’d probably be somewhat of a spiritual thing for me, considering how deeply even the studio versions resonate. Favorite track: Hold It Together. I literally love every song on this album (except IOU...), and each is uniquely special, deeply personal, and beautifully resonates, but this one stands out for some reason. I think that breakdown towards the end adds a lot. Some other favorites are About You, Ghosts, Make It Up As I Go, and Running From My Shadow. And there’s not even words for Brooding.

honorable mentions

Expectations by Hayley Kiyoko - This one very nearly made my list, but Hivemind ending up dethroning it. It’s a great debut, full of gay bops that really kicked off 20gayteen well, I’d say. (Favorite track: Wanna Be Missed. Fun fact: My most listened song for all of 2018.)

Mania by Fall Out Boy - It’s unfortunate that my long-time favorite band didn’t make the list, but I just couldn’t get into the sound of this record. (Favorite track: Sunshine Riptide)

Bloom by Troye Sivan - He’s so big now! A big boy! I’m so proud of how far he’s come. I wasn’t as big on this album as I was on Blue Neighbourhood, but it’s still a solid sophomore record. (Favorite track: Dance to This)

My Dear Melancholy by The Weeknd - Abel is one of my favorite musicians of all time (and was my most listened to for two years in a row) and he’d never disappoint me. MDM is sad, harrowing, and visceral, proof that Abel continues to be one of the best artists of this decade. (Favorite track: Call Out My Name)

3 Chains O’ Gold

Released August 16, 1994

If you haven’t seen 3 Chains O Gold, I’m going to need you to seek it out immediately because it is one of Prince’s most glorious accomplishments. Released in 1994, it expands on the Love Symbol album and attempts to give us Mayte’s back story, I guess? Either way it’s a real treat, so lets get right to my attempt to break down what’s going in this beautiful mess.

Opening Credits First of all, I wanted to make this not too terribly long and include only events relevant to the plot, but it’s worth noting that the “Warner Reprise Video” is arguably the MOST DATED LOGO IN HISTORY. If this doesn’t scream 1994 at you, I guess you weren’t alive then. If anyone from the future is like “what were the 90s like?” just show them this 10 second clip.

We open with the credits over several clips of what I’m confident is a show on the Paisley Park soundstage, with Prince in a glorious halter top backless jumpsuit, but that’s not important right now - we cut to Princess Mayte in Egypt doing her thing, which I guess is skinny dipping with four nameless women who call her Mai Tai? Either way, full nudity right out of the gate, interspersed with clips of who we find out is her father being stabbed. She holds him as he dies of one stab wound, which I guess you would if no doctor was called. Oh well, dead forever, so she grabs her title 3 Chains O Gold from a vault and we go from Cairo, Egypt, to Minneapolis, Minnesota! Unclear where Mayte is now staying, but it appears to be a small barren room with only candles and a small tv, which is playing Kirstie Alley reporting on a riot in the same alley where conveniently half of Graffiti Bridge takes place.

My Name is Prince The chain hat is here! As is an extended rap from Tony M, while Prince dances atop several cars in an inexplicably damp alley. He’s so stompy! Mayte has apparently seen this on the news and made her way through the crowd to hand him a bedazzled VHS case containing what is revealed to be the actual tape of her performance on That’s Incredible AS AN 8 YEAR OLD. This is problematic at best, but he’s interrupted by Tony M’s insistence that they have a car party to attend to.

Sexy MF The car party turns out to be the members of the NPG playing cards in the smoke filled garage of Paisley Park, and their involvement is that Prince shows up, demands 3 women leave with himself, Tony M and Kirky J, and then ridicules the rest of his band for a little bit. Kind of an asshole, but also… have you seen him in this?? Looking like a real snack. Forgiven. Moving on. My favorite thing about all Prince stories is that it’s like, Prince wants the girl, Prince gets the girl, and this is no different. Prince and his gold gun microphone want Troy Beyer in her pearl cage dress (can you call that a dress?) as they make out in various hotel hallways. They go to the movies and make out for a bit and engage in some heavy petting, but Troy knows something is up and that there’s someone else (spoiler alert, it’s Mayte), and he responds with a very intent Purple Rain-esque moody stare.

Love 2 the 9s Mayte gets a card slipped under her hotel room door with audition times for the NPG, so I guess Love 2 the 9s is her audition?? But wait, some of the NPG guys are in jail slash Prince’s office at Paisley. This is like… the Hard Times, if the Hard Times had a budget? Anyway it would appear that the audition is a photoshoot, with Prince in the highest of high waisted red pants and an open lace bolero top. Again, he looks DECADENT. I digress. Tony M proceeds to interview Mayte with some inane questions, until she is is finally permitted to make the booty boom. Thank god. Sidebar: her makeup!!!!! So perfectly 90s, complete with a brown lip and thin eyebrows. Perfection.

Morning Papers Cut to the zoo! Why?? I DON’T KNOW. Here’s P and Mayte walking through the zoo hand in hand, being real sweet paired with a song that makes the whole thing problematic, but again, choosing to overlook the whole “why is age more than a number” with a shot of Mayte riding on a carousel. YIKES. Cut to Paisley Park where P is dressed in white pants, white heels, a floor length white trench coat, and a SLEEVELESS PLAID FLANNEL SHIRT unbuttoned all the way down to his waist. This is a GOOD. LOOK. Someone has been working out, and he is eager to show it off. Ugh back to the carousel for some kind of trippy sequence involving Mayte whispering into a mirror in a Blossom hat.

The Max Dramatic cut to footage of what I’m pretty sure is one of the 1993 Radio City Music Hall shows from the Love Symbol tour mixed with some backstage footage and whatever was shot at Paisley. Prince’s ability to create euphamisms and use them like literally anyone else in the world would ever even bother never fails to amuse me. He’d like to “shuffle the cards in that stack!” …. okay. Before or after you drive me/us/Mayte to Tennessee? Anyway I guess this is to show she did indeed get the job? Here’s a picture from one of the Radio City shows because one I can’t get a good screen cap, and two it’s important for.... reasons.

Blue Light I’m not sure whose bedroom we are in, but Prince is sitting there I guess waiting for Kirstie Alley to call so he can hang up on her. You can tell this video was shot later than most of the other footage as his typhoon is really out of control here and reached peak mushroom, but it’s fine since it’s mostly face close ups of him and Mayte as they roll around on a bed while she rejects his advances. Girl. Get your shit together. Also he’s wearing light pink silk pajamas. Or it could just be a regular suit he wears on stage, jury still out, either way it looks comfy af and I’d like one.

I Wanna Melt With U Aw man. Mayte falls asleep, while Prince packs a suitcase with all his essentials for a tour (chains, a chain hat, and one shirt) and sneaks out. This is my favorite thing, omg. So Mayte has fallen into a fitful sleep and is currently having a sexual nightmare about her flirtatious encounter with P that involves a lot of naked ladies distorted in funhouse mirrors and Prince wearing maybe boxer shorts?? Umbros??, a black and white vertical striped robe, and ROLLER SKATES. Not only roller skates, but knee pads as well because even when you are haunting someones dreams in a sexual way, safety first. Oh also flashbacks to dad. There is SO MUCH GOING ON HERE, my god. I would pay good money to be haunted by Prince on roller skates and safety pads in my dreams, I tell you what.

Sweet Baby Mayte wakes up from her nightmare to realize P has left her with a note that says only “Sweet baby don’t cry.” Wait I thought she was in the band, but he went on tour without her? From Minneapolis, to Japan, by train? Unclear. Anyway she packs her bags and stands despondent, weeping on some train tracks for the duration of the song until she hops on a plane back to Egypt to be a princess again.

The Continental Prince arrives by train in Tokyo, where he is visibly distraught and his band starts talking shit about him as they have a pre-show gambling sesh? The Ghost of Mayte shows up to haunt him during soundcheck where he is again very Purple Rain levels of pensive and moody, but NOT IN THE SHOW! The Continental is 3 Chain’s O Gold’s Darling Nikki - overtly sexual, many thrusts incorporated into the dancing, lots of face touching with finger flutters, proving he doesn’t require his main love interests attention, he can get it from anyone anywhere, and they’ll thank him for it. Ok so here we have two seemingly concurrent events happening I think? One is Mayte dancing in Egypt, while Prince gets some in his chain hat. This is legit a porn at this point, wait why does he have a sword??? Anyway so again with the making out and the heavy petting, but right as it gets started, Mayte has been overcome with… I don’t know, but she collapses, and Prince is simultaneously unable to perform sexually. I think to show they are spiritually connected??? Do I GET Prince’s visions now?????? I am so proud.

Damn U Back in Egypt, an old man tells Mayte she looks like a girl he used to bang. Okay. Prince has returned to Paisley Park where he is performing a one man show for a dinner party in the sound stage, I think. Again, a real treat. Black jumpsuit with a white collared shirt & white tie, yes this is a good look. Oh Tommy Barbarella must have gone on a cruise to the Bahamas on the way back, he has some hair wraps and braids now. Ugh that baritone. Damn U, damn me, this song is so good. Here’s a screen shot that could double as his Bar Mitvah photo.

Mayte has received a letter!! It’s the lyrics to Damn U. Her reaction is to go to her dress maker to get a fancy coin dress, and then hop on the next flight to LA, where they will be shooting the 7 music video, but not before there is a 5 minute segment with members of the NPG talking shit about Mayte. No, really. First up is Tony M and his date, who is Mayte? Where did she come from, what did she do? The rest of the NPG is in the gym, also talking shit about her??!! WHY IS THIS INCLUDED. I guess to show he loves her in spite of his entire band hating her? Michael Bland wants to know “What is her purpose, what does she do?” Honestly. What is this doing here. And it goes on for SO LONG!!!

7 Maybe my favorite Prince music video??? So we see past versions of Prince trapped in a time traveling cryogenic tube… The Continental yellow suit is here, the chain hat, the Morning Papers Sleeveless Grunge Shirt, some insane bolero top with a cowboy hat that unfortunately is not seen in its full glory.. each of them is electrocuted to show that he has no past, he has sown all his oats and he is ready to be faithful to Mayte and maybe now she will reciprocate his sexual advances. Also there are seven pairs of TINY CHILDREN PRINCE AND MAYTES WIELDING SWORDS AND COIN DRESSES IT IS VERY ADORABLE!!!! God he’s so intense. Oh and the “one day all 7 will die” is in reference to the 7 men that killed her father, whom he has casually assassinated by his bodyguards as he and Mayte waltz off into the sunset/another smoke filled room at Paisley Park.

End Credits Mayte calls Kirstie Alley to finally grant her long sought after interview with him, which was clearly written by him. Most of her responses are “oh.” I think this is the letter he wrote as her as his press release for why he changed his name? Again, UNCLEAR. Anyway, we’re left with shots of Prince making some kind of business deal in a smoky conference room, and then he ends up signing a contract written in Japanese with the Love Symbol. Dramatic cut to a cemetery, where we see a shallow grave containing the chain hat and the 3 chains o gold.

Act 3, Chapter 5: Electric Boogaloo

“Hello, Sportacus!~” EB smiled and patted the new hero’s shoulder.

The pole vaulter zombie was still caught a bit off guard by the fact that he was now a hero. He smiled. “Uh, thanks. So you’re Electric Boogaloo, right?”

EB spun on his heel and struck a pose. “That be me~” He smiled.

“My name The Smash. Good to meet you, new hero.” Smash held out his large hand.

“Wow, I didn’t expect a luchador to have such a thick russian accent,” said Sportacus.

“Most do not.”

Sportacus stared at Smash’s huge palm, and then smiled and shook it.

“Good grip,” commented Smash.

Sportacus grinned.

“...For thin zombie like you.”

Sportacus burst out laughing. “I like you.”

“Smash like you too, Sportus.” Smash patted Sportacus’ head and noogied him with his thumb.

Sportacus chuckled. “So what DID happen to Rustbolt?”

Now the thing is, EB and Smash had come and greeted him as the last few zombies were leaving. So it was just the three of them, pretty much. “...You really wanna know?” Whispered EB.

“Yes I do, Floof.”

“Okay, we-- Did you just call me floof?”

Sportacus nodded. “Sorry, Electric Boogaloo…”

“I kinda like it.” EB smiled. “I’m kinda surprised nobody’s called me that before.”

“So, what happened to him, Floof?”

EB looked at the hero. Sure, he seemed nice… But he’s Rustbolt’s REPLACEMENT… But it’s not his fault… So, taking in a deep breath, and then holding it for a sec, EB sighed. “Rustbolt got some plant-related powers and now he’s living with the plant heroes.”

“How come nobody else told me?”

Smash and EB looked at each other. If they spilled the beans, Sportacus could take said beans to Brainstorm or Zomboss. Those beans are NOT cool beans. “It is because only us know,” Smash said softly.

Sportacus’ eyes widened. “Did you guys almost leave WITH him?”

EB shook his head. “No. We visited him.”

“Also we gave him plant powers,” Smash mumbled.

Sportacus gasped.

“Smash!” EB scolded. “For real!?”

“I trust him, he is nice.” Smash shrugged.

Sighing, EB nodded. “Yeah. He wanted powers so we shot him with the handheld hero-tron. The one that made YOU a hero. But he had coffee grounds in his hands and ZAP! Plant powers.”

“I thought it was tea,” Smash commented.

“Yeah. What’d I say, coffee? God I’m stupid. I’m just a bit stressed from the meeting. I don’t want any harm to come to my best friend…”

Sportacus hugged EB. “Cheer up, Floof. It’s really cool getting to talk to you guys and, well… Talking in general. It’s great being able to say something besides ‘brains’ all the time. But I don’t think I’m fit for all this…”

Smash poked the other two. “I have idea. Is good one. Want to hear?”

“What’s your idea?” Asked EB.

“We get Rustbolt… To train Sportacus. That way we dont end up having another Rustbolt replacement, and Zomboss will leave us alone.”

“Which gives us the perfect environment to figure out where to go from there,” said Sportacus.

Smash smiled. “Already he is like Rustbolt. Very smart.”

EB was about to say something when his phone rang. It was Zomboss.

“Electric Boogaloo! I require your services immediately,” said the big-brained boss.

“‘Sup, Dr. Zomboss?”

“You and Super Brainz are to look after Impfinity.”

“Got it.”

Zomboss hung up, and EB pocketed his phone. “Guys, I gotta go babysit Impfinity with--”

“The one and only!~” Super Brainz landed onto the stage where the others stood.

EB chuckled. He was always a bit fond of Super Brainz. Back in the days, them and Smash were the CREW. They went on ALL the missions. They were inseparable. “Gimme a sec, ok?” Super Brainz nodded and flew in the air, kinda hovering high above them.

“So what’s up?” Asked Sportacus.

“The main focus is finding out what else Zomboss has planned.” Sportacus and Smash nodded.

Suddenly, Super Brainz flew down. “Zomboss said to tell you that Sportacus is going to be living in Rustbolt’s house.”

EB, Smash and Sportacus nodded.

“Now let’s go!” Super brainz picked up EB and flew off. EB waved to Smash and Sportacus, and they waved back.

“I’m gonna miss Rustbolt,” said Super Brainz.

EB looked at him. “...Me too.”

“But hey, what’re you gonna do, right?” SB shrugged. “Oh, also. I got a bunch of disco albums for us to listen to.” Floof smiled. Him and Super Brainz, even if they hadn’t talked much anymore, always had each other in mind. “So we’re almost there.”

“Impfinity isn’t TOO crazy, right?” Asked EB.

“Nah, he’s just jumpy. He doesn’t clone himself TOO much, and when he does it’s usually to do something like stack on top of them to reach the cookie jar or something.”

EB chuckled. “That’s pretty IMPressive.”

Super Brainz let out a guffaw, clutching his stomach with both hands. Therefore dropping EB.

“Why am I always getting dropped in the air!?” Screamed EB. “It’s not even scary anymore, it’s just redundant!”

Super Brainz flew down and picked up the dancing hero. “There.”

“I’m just glad we’re not babysitting Z-Mech,” said EB.

“Why not?”

“He’s kind of a copycat,” EB started. “Like, he’s not that original. Half of his decks are either sports decks or dancing decks. Those are my thing. And Rustbolt’s thing.”

Super Brainz nodded. “Well, SPORTACUS’s thing now, I guess. Also you gotta remember, Dancing decks, he has Bonus Track Buckethead.”

EB frowned. “I want him in my arsenal.”

“Who knows? Maybe some magic disco dancer can conjure up one for you,” Super Brainz said sarcastically.

“Conjure. Now that’s a word you don’t hear everyday.”

Super Brainz smirked that pervy-looking smirk of his. “I learned that word yesterday.”

“Been waiting to use it, haven’t you.”

“You know me so well~” Super Brainz said in a heavily exxhagerated girly voice. The two started laughing. Just like they used to. “Hey, remember that Grass Knuckles mission?”

“Oh god, with the two trenches next to the pier? Don’t freaking remind me.”

Super Brainz laughed.

“That took us SO LONG.”

~FLASHBACK~

Super Brainz, EB and Smash are gathered around each other.

“He’s got too much bullseye bullshit,” growled Super Brainz.

Smash nodded. “We need locust swarm and rolling stone.”

EB looked at Smash. “Definately the locusts, but we also need to be able to damage nim directly.”

“You both are crazy!” Shouted SB. “We need to use deadly to get rid of those damn armored plants. We need strikethrough to hit him directly. We also nooe to bonus attack the shit out of him.”

“Or we can just flood him with glass cannons!” Yelled Floof.

“No! We need a weed spray!” Roared Smash.

The three kept on arguing. For a long time. Until finally Smash roared. EB and SB both shut up after that.

“We need Frenzy,” said Smash. “That way we can hit him. Super Brainz, you have no healing, so you are bad idea for this.”

“Wait, that’s it!” EB snapped his fingers. “Everyone make a list of what you LACK.”

Smash and Super Brainz were a bit confused, but nonetheless they did as EB said.

After a few minutes they read out their lists. EB started. “I don’t have bonus attacks, strikethrough, bouncing, deadly, armored or bullseye.”

“I don’t have direct damage, bullseye, bonus attack, deadly, bouncing or strikethrough,” said Smash.

Super Brainz went last. “I don’t have frenzy, armored, healing, destroying, decent buffs, debuffs, or direct damage.”

“What’s VERY important for this mission?” Asked EB.

“Healing, so that we can last longer,” said Smash.

“Deadly, because then his buffs go to waste.” Said Super Brainz.

“Frenzy,so deal with sting beans,” countered Smash.

Super Brainz narrowed his eyes. “Bonus attacks, to level the playing field.”

“Locusts to deal with big plants.”

“That’s what deadly’s for. Also Gravestones are immune to bonus attacks.”

“I can use weed spray,” said Smash.

SB laughed. “Bouncing undoes any buffs he gave them. Meaning WEED SPRAY is only good early game.”

“Guys!” Shouted EB. “Calm down. I think Super Brainz is the one we need.”

And Super Brainz, with the help of EB and Smash, made an imp-based strategy that absolutely obliterated Grass Knuckles. It took them a week altogether to beat that final fight.

~UNFLASHBACK~

“Well, here we are.” Super Brainz flew down into the carnival. There, standing by the circus tent, was Impfinity, snacking on brain cupcakes.

“Hi Soup Brain!~” Said Impfinity.

“Impfinity, I’m here with EB.”

Impfinity stared at EB’s afro. “Look at all that floof!” Shouted Impfinity. “SO MUCH FLOOF!”

Super Brainz snickered. “I’m like, 95% sure that he’s only got like five hairs on his head, they’re just like 40 feet long.”

“My hair is NOT 40 feet!”

“Sure as hell SMELLS like 40 feet.” SB pointed to his bootless foot. Impfinity just busted out lauhging.

EB pouted. “That’s not cool, bro.”

“Sorry,” said the superhero. “I got…. CARRIED AWAY.”

EB laughed so hard he started tearing up. “You crack me up~”

Super Brainz smirked. “So are we gonna watch the little rascal?”

“Yep. So, Impfinity, what do you wanna do?” EB crouched, tooking down at the small imp.

“I want to play chickenfight!” He shouted.

“But there’s only three of us.”

Impfinity, with the craziest smile on his face, pressed the button on his belly. “Not anymore!” 5 Impfinities stacked on each other’s shoulders, and were about twice as tall as EB, not including hair.

“Who’s bottom?” asked Super Brainz. “I’m stronger, but you’re taller.”

“Stronger? Don’t underestimate my back and shoulders, buddy.”

EB, now curious, flew up onto EB, and EB carried the buff hero with ease.

The Impfinities were laughing hysterically. “Yay!”

And then the fight was on. EB had no problem on the bottom, except for the fact that Super Brainz was full-on left and right hooking the clones. Every time he swung his fist, he put all his weight into that punch. Which made it hard for EB to balance. And every time that Super Brainz would punch a clone off, another would spawn in its place.

“This is fun!” The clones laughed and giggled. EB smiled as he and Super Brainz fought the impfinite clones.

“That was exhausting,” said Super Brainz between pants.

EB had the biggest grin on his face. “It was fun.” He watched Super Brainz take off, then started walking to his nightclub. Suddenly, his phone rang. It was Brainstorm. Picking it up, EB casually asked “Hello?” He hoped that Sportacus hadn’t spilled the beans to Brainstorm.

“Electric Boogaloo, it’s Professor Brainstorm. We haven’t hung out in a while, I was wondering if you wanted to do something later.”

Well that’s not suspicious at all. “Uh, sure. What did you have in mind?”

“Well, there’s this pink comet I’ve been keeping an eye on for a while and--”

“You’ve noticed that too?”

“Yes. It’s quite peculiar. I plan to observe it more tonight. I was wondering if you wanted to accompany me.”

EB sighed in relief. “Yeah, sure. Sounds fun.”

“Excellent. Meet me at Zombie U just after sundown.” Brainstorm hung up.

EB pocketed his phone and looked up. The sun was already done setting.

Brainstorm had basically said, in a really calm way,

GET OVER HERE. NOW.

EB gulped. This might be about stars.

Or it might be about something of much greater importance.

EB ran all the way to Zombie U. There on the roof stood the second smartest zombie of all time. “Hello, Boogaloo,” said Brainstorm without looking down at Boog.

The disco dancer bit his lip. “How’s it going, Brainstorm?”

“It’s going great,” said EB. He was lying of course, but Brainstorm didn’t seem to notice.

“Come join me,” he said.

EB climbed up to the roof and looked at the stars. There, sure enough, was that pink dot. “It’s not headed for us, is it?...”

Brainstorm shook his head. “Not at all. That would make it a meteor. It’s Comet Z, as I have started to call it.”

EB shrugged. “Comet Z sounds cool.”

Brainstorm looked into the telescope. “I wanted to ask you something.”

EB’s eyes widened. “Sup?”

“What are you up to?”

EB started panicking. “W-what do you mean? I’m not up to anything, Brainstorm.”

Brainstorm shrugged. “Wanted to know if you had plans later in the week.”

A weight was lifted from his aching shoulders.

“But now you’re acting nervous. Is there something you’re not telling me?”

“Well there’s alot of stuff I don’t tell you,” EB quickly responded. A little TOO quick.

Brainstorm turned and glanced at EB. “You seem on edge. Look, if you don’t wanna tell me something, don’t tell me it. We all hide things from each other.”

EB let out a sigh of relief. “So anyways, um.”

“Well are you free this week?”

EB nodded. But since Brainstorm was looking through the telescope, he said “Yep. I’m free, as far as I know.”

“Excellent. Can I count on your arrival to Zombie U tomorrow evening as well?”

“Sounds good. I’m also gonna be helping train Sportacus, by the way. But that’ll be in the daytime.”

“Sounds good to me,” said Brainstorm. “Good chat.”

“Wait was that all? I came over here so that you could ask me to come over AGAIN tomorrow?”

“I only realized the redundancy once you arrived,” replied the professor. “I hope to see you tomorrow, EB. You should get some sleep.”

EB, keeping eyes on the professor, climbed down the building and slowly backed away. Once he was far enough, he turned and bolted for his house.

Brainstorm, watching Comet Z, flinched slightly when his phone rang. He pressed a button, and a hologram of Zomboss appeared. “Hello, Dr. Zomboss.”

“Good evening, Brainstorm,” said Zomboss. “I have something I’d like to discuss with you.”

“What would that be, sir?”

“The laser. The one that Rustbolt blew up. I want you to remake it.”

Brainstorm looked up and furrowed his brow. His moustache twitched. “I can have it done in six days, sir.”

“Make it five.”

Brainstorm nodded, and the hologram fizzled out. He put down the small device and continued to observe the comet. “Oh, the kind of things that could be on that comet. It looks like it’s made primarily of solid rock, instead of a granular substance or ice. How peculiar. It seems to be about the size of a two-story house.That is, if I’m looking at it correctly. That glow is so intense, It took all my sun filters to be able to properly observe it. How odd.”

“Brainz!” Shouted a browncoat.

“What is it?” Asked the professor.

“Brainz.”

“Really?”

“Brainz.”

“Fine.” Brainstorm sighed and teleported down to the ground. He walked inside to see a mass of wires and two oval frames. “How is it not working?”

“Brainz.”

“I thought I put new couplings in.”

“Brainz.” He pointed to the oval on the left. “Brainz.”

“I said I would work on that. Also you’re forgetting that the cables are weighing it down. We can’t get accurate numbers yet.”

“Brainz?”

“Yes, we’re gonna put the transmitter on.”

“Brainz.”

“That all?”

He nodded.

“Good.” Brainstorm left the room and headed to his office. He rifled through a few papers and found the diagrams and blueprints for the zombification laser. “Two projects, two deadlines.”

EB was walking home when it started to thunder. Clouds rolled in, and lightning jumped from one cloud to the next. EB chuckled. Lightning struck down in front of EB, temporarily blinding him. He flinched, blinking the white lines out of his eyes. “I’m ELECTRIC BOOGALOO. THIS IS MY DOMAIN.” He jumped in the air, and pointed to the sky with both hands. Lightning came down and entered his fingers. When he landed, he jumped again and shot it back into the air. He watched the rain fall down and shocked it with his finger. It bounced from one droplet to the other, finally arcing down and going into the earth.

He walked home, zapping the rain and puddles as he went. He could never do this with Rustbolt. Rustbolt hated rain, even when his suit wasn’t on. Admittedly that was rare, but still.

When EB reached home, he walked in to see hoards of dancing zombies. He closed the door, walked to the center of the stage, and danced the night away.

3: what is a very unpopular band you're into? tell a little bit about them

Unpopular as in no one knows who they are, or unpopular as in... they’re kind of a joke and no one takes them seriously/admits to liking them? The former would be July Talk, who are my darlings and one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. The chemistry between the two singers is UNREAL. They’re like... indie rock but sometimes kinda bluesy? Also they’re all my faves, their guitarist spends 90% of his time on twitter retweeting people talking shit about them and their drummer is the purest ever and just uses Instagram for his birding photography, I love him. The latter, a band no one admits to like/no one takes seriously/are pretty much a fucking meme are the Plain White T’s but LISTEN!!!!! I’ve been listening to them since 2002, they are so much more than Hey There Delilah, they’re my boys and I love them.

4: name a great band you recently discovered

I’m kinda really big on Creeper right now. Go listen to Misery. Do it. I’ll wait.

5: which rare recording of any band would you like to possess?

I don’t know if it like, actually counts/if there are recordings in existence but listen there are songs written BY Fall Out Boy FOR One Direction that were considered “too weird” for them and I’ve never needed to hear any specific songs more in my life.

6: is there an artist whose solo career you prefer over their work with their band(s)?

I prefer Justin Timberlake to N Sync because those battle lines were drawn when I was 12 years old and I chose BSB. I OBVIOUSLY made the right choice but man, solo JT is the shit.

7: which is you favourite side project by any band member?

Blaqk Audio. But I also really like Brian Fallon’s solo album but I think that’s just... his project now, I don’t think Gaslight Anthem is a thing anymore.

8: which song do you think should everybody listen to at least once in their lives?

Hear me out -- it’s the Neverending Story theme song by Limahl. I FUCKING LOVE THE NEVERENDING STORY MORE THAN MOST THINGS. (also the New Found Glory cover is A+++)

9: explain why your favourite song is your favourite song

I don’t really know what my favourite song is, like, of all time. As a kid it was probably Forever Young by Alphaville and I can’t really explain why except that instrumental bit at the end is amazing (also ask @sinceubeenjon about how I feel about the One Direction cover because... I love it. I’m not ashamed). My favourite like... not-embarrassing song is probably “Falling Slowly” because I also love the shit out of Once, and it’s like 7 years later and I’m still obsessed with it winning the Oscar over three Disney songs, it’s the greatest underdog story of all time. And I’m in love with Glen Hansard.

10: any bands you got into after seeing them live?

So okay my love of the Plain White T’s (which started after I saw them open for Jimmy Eat World, so there’s one) meant that for a LONG time I was seeing them open for other bands or as part of really weird lineups and because of them I got into The Rocket Summer, Lucky Boys Confusion and, recently, Set It Off. I also got into Anberlin in 2003 when they opened a show I went to and they went on to be one of the most important bands in the world to me (and then ruined my life by leaving me forever in 2014 but IT’S FINE I’M FINE)

11: any bands your friends got you into?

I guess I can count Jacques who got me into Creeper lmao. Also in high school my friend Shannon fell in love with the first Taking Back Sunday album and gave copies to EVERYBODY, so there’s that one, and I fucking love that album (kiiiiiinda fallen off them lately but damn that was a good record.)

12: a band which is the only band from their genre you like?

I don’t regularly listen to all that much hip hop but I adore clipping. so I guess they count.

13: an unpopular opinion on which is your favourite song by any band?

Listen, all you former emo kids are dead wrong about MCR, Welcome To The Black Parade is not their best song, it’s obviously Headfirst for Halos or You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison or Helena like... anything off Three Cheers. Also like as recently as last week I was thinking about a band where the die-hard fans all pretend to hate their most popular song and wanted to say we can all admit it’s fucking great, let’s not be too cool for it but I CAN’T REMEMBER WHAT BAND OR SONG THAT WAS ANYMORE. I REMEMBERED WHO IT WAS IT WAS JIMMY EAT WORLD AND THE SONG WAS THE MIDDLE. FUCK Y’ALL THAT’S A GREAT DAMN SONG.

MxPx - Life In General. I’ll fight you on this. I love that album cover. Although Glassjaw - Worship & Tribute had a bad ass minimalist design too.

It doesn’t feel like this should be my real answer but I both love and hate what Anberlin did with Lowborn, from the cover variants (I have all of them and they’re framed with a signed one in the middle because I am GARBAGE) and the band photo on the back of it with like an obituary type layout. It hurts my soul but I like it too.

18: favourite concept album?

Showbread’s Anorexia & Nervosa albums were INCREDIBLE but then everyone hated them because no one likes when bands take risks for some reason??? and it made them bitter as hell and they called everyone out on their next album lmao I miss them. Also Boys Night Out’s Trainwreck was really good and someone made it into a stage show I want to see so badly.

19: which bands would you like to see live one day?

I think I’ve actually gotten to see almost every band I would ever want to but there are a handful of boybands I never got to see because they never made it over here that I’d like to. A1 and 5ive mostly. I don’t care. I’d go hard for them.

20: which was the longest concert you ever attended?

Like in terms of a single artist’s set fucking Eric Church played for three and a half goddamn hours on his last tour. C’mon man I don’t have that kind of energy. Good show though.

21: a musician whose music you enjoy but whom you dislike as a person or vice versa?

So uh... Stephen Christian from Anberlin SORT OF falls into this because obviously I love him??? and I love Anberlin and I love Anchor & Braille but MY DUDE I cannot do the worship album he just released. Can’t. Sorry. Not for me.

Also, there used to be the concept of “Good Guys Bad Band” thrown around the scene a lot, and I very strongly associate it with Simple Plan because it SEEMS LIKE THEY GOT HIT WITH IT A LOT and honestly? Those guys are/were the best. I can’t really speak to it now but like 15 years ago when they were starting out, they were rad as hell. SUPER nice, SUPER friendly, just really good dudes. But their music. Bruh. Same thing with Marians Trench, actually, Josh was just THE BEST but holy shiiiiiit they suck. (I’ve heard he’s kind of a dick now and that disappoints me)

Annie Lennox, ‘Why’

She pulled down one shoebox. Behind it was another, and another. Her calves protested as she climbed up and down the step ladder clearing the top shelf of the cupboard. There were two old worn trench coats that brought a grim smile to her face, a stuffed alien that had been a joke gift from Frohike on a Mulder birthday long ago, a stamp album that might have belonged to Teena Mulder, the cover so ripped and dusty that Scully was afraid to open it. And three shoe boxes. All these items covered the bed in the spare room. None of them was what she was looking for.

She unlidded the first box and spotted Mulder’s handwriting straightaway. Each square of paper was uniform, the ink blue, the lettering precise. On each square was a numbered list. One to five. The box was full. She opened another, and another. She picked up handfuls of paper lists, turning them over to inspect them from every angle, as though changing the view might offer some perspective.

She plucked one at random, holding it at the long edge like she might hold a specimen with tweezers.

Another revealed a list of military titles and a third a list of perfumes. She rummaged through each box, pulling lists at random. Bird species, childhood diseases, comedy movies, shoe styles, European ski resorts. She licked her lips as she landed on one that listed five boy’s name. Number one was William.

She rifled through the notes. As an investigator she tried to apply her training to bring logic to the letters on the pages, layering them or placing them sequentially. As a scientist she understood that the apparent randomness of the system would eventually yield some underlying pattern or repetition. Chaos.

‘Beautiful chaos, Scully,’ Mulder said, standing so close behind her that she could feel the heat radiating from him, hear his quickening breaths. She hadn’t heard him come in. She felt unutterably guilty, like she’d been caught reading his journal.

She put the notes down and turned to face him. He flexed his jaw and stuffed his hands in his pockets. ‘What are they, Mulder?’

He grabbed one and read it out. Tropical fish species. ‘This one lists the fish I’ve never had in my tank. This one,’ he said, blushing even more, ‘is a list of my favourite bras you wore back in our field days, colour, style and designer.’

Scully looked back at the bed, the paper strewn across it. ‘Is there anything you haven’t catalogued, Mulder?’

He pushed out his lips and hesitated a moment. ‘I don’t think there’s one for all brands of pantyhose you’ve ever worn. Or all the types of salad you’ve ordered and not eaten, or the different inflections in your voice when you say you’re fine. But I could do those, if you want.’

The bed sagged as she sat down. Notes fluttered to the floor. ‘What’s the purpose of them?’ She looked up at him. He held her gaze for a beat then cast his eyes to the floor. He stooped to pick up the lists that had fallen.

‘There’s no purpose. Not a rational one that would suit your rigorous methods, Dr Scully.’

‘What about one that your psychology training could provide, Dr Mulder?’

He rubbed his stubbled chin. ‘They saved me.’

‘Saved you? How?’

‘Perhaps it’s like the cross around your neck, Scully.’

‘Faith, Mulder?’ She swept her hand across the mess. ‘These gave you faith?’

‘What is faith, Scully, but a way of keeping you on track, maintaining your sanity.’

She chuffed. ‘There’s more to faith than that, Mulder.’

‘What do you want me say, Scully? I wrote them daily, religiously; the routine was nourishing for my soul, I confessed.’

‘Mulder, these aren’t confessions. They’re lists. Words on paper in an ordered fashion.’

He opened the second box, picked out a note. ‘Five places I nearly walked out on you.’ He put it back. Chose another. ‘Five times I hated you.’ He showed her the list, the lettering scrawled across the paper, angry words bumping into each other. Another. ‘Five women I fucked while you were always working.’

Her hand shook as she covered her mouth. Her skin smelled musty. She bit back the sob that threatened.

‘You were right to leave, Scully.’

She shook her head, letting her hair fall over her face. She breathed in ragged breaths waiting for the oxygen to work its way through her, to calm her. She imagined him, hunched over the desk in his study, scribbling furiously across the paper, at dawn, in the dark, on Thanksgiving, when it snowed so heavily she couldn’t get back to the house, when she turned her back on him and said she was too tired.

She’d told him once to write it down, put it in a book.

‘Mulder, you were ill.’

He walked around to sit on the other side of the bed. She turned to watch how the muscles in his back moved under his tee. His shoulders were tight.

‘And this is the actual evidence of a troubled mind. All those years you demanded proof. I believed, but you needed to weigh it, dissect it, culture it or calibrate it. I felt it, but you had to measure, prod, test, and scrape it onto a slide. Well, here are the case notes on Fox Mulder. You can turn these into one of those reports you used to write.’

‘Mulder, stop.’

‘Why Scully? So that you can feel better? Here you have all the truth you need.’

‘This isn’t the truth, Mulder. This is a punishment.’

‘For you or for me?’ His words cut her and she held her breath. They’d been here before. His anger boiling up until he punched the wall or broke a vase. He sighed. ‘I’m sorry, Scully. I’m not going to…but this is the truth. In these boxes, this is the ugly truth from my mind, my heart.’

‘I know your heart,’ she said, wiping away the tear that had fallen and burned her skin. ‘This isn’t your true heart. This is your guilt. Your conscience. Your…’

‘My sanity?’ He chuckled, breaking the tension. She allowed herself a short, mirthless laugh too. ‘Did you really consider what you were getting into, Scully? You, the ruthless, critical thinker. The scientist. The rational half of the working partnership. How many times did you ask yourself, “how could I let myself fall for Fox Mulder?” I asked. Many times.’

She giggled then. It was a short burst of life from her scarred lungs. ‘I used to ask what did you see in me? Uptight, argumentative, sceptic. And really, really short person.’ She fell back on the bed, laughing.

He grabbed a note. ‘Five times Scully laughed.’

After a moment, she sniffed. ‘Just five?’

He looked over at her. ‘Five good times, Scully. Not the only five.’

‘What are they?’

‘Number five, the first time you met the Lone Gunmen and you giggled hysterically outside their apartment for five full minutes. They were mortified.’

‘They could hear me?’ she gasped.

‘Scully, they were the masters of surveillance. Of course they heard. Number four, when I told you about Nurse Nancy and your karate routine after I got trapped in that AI. You listened to me and then your lips wobbled and you spat out your coffee and let rip.’

‘It was kind of ridiculous, though, Mulder. You have to admit that.’

He nodded. ‘It felt so real.’

She bit her bottom lip. ‘Sorry.’

‘Number three, when we got drunk after that godawful movie premiere and I told you that I loved you and you lost your shit and cried laughing.’

‘Oh, Mulder. I really don’t remember that.’

‘No, of course you don’t. You were really drunk, Scully.’

‘What was number two?’

‘The first week on the run, when we hadn’t slept properly for days and we ended up in some fleabitten motel in whatever nameless town was next on the map and you switched on the tv and it was playing Caddyshack. We both laughed, Scully. Laughed at that movie because it was comfort, it was memory, it was nostalgia.’

She reached out for his hand and he laid across the bed so their heads met in the middle. ‘It was safer to laugh than to cry. If we’d have cried we wouldn’t have stopped.’

‘Do you want to know the top one, Scully?’

She turned her lips and kissed the back of his hand, where the veins ran through. ‘Yes,’ she whispered.

‘You were outside the hospital one day, back when I was supposed to be in hiding still. You were talking to someone, I don’t know who, tall man, grey hair, glasses. He was telling you a story and you were listening so intently, nodding here and there, holding his gaze, just like you used to do with me, standing so close to him. He bent his head, whispered something to you. You took a second, then threw your head back and laughed, full and throaty. You radiated happiness, Scully. I was going to surprise you, take you for lunch, but I just watched you laugh and laugh. I knew I couldn’t take you out of that moment. You deserved all the happiness. You still do.’

She inched forward, kissing his mouth, running her hands through his hair. ‘You make me happy, Mulder.’

‘After you’ve seen all this?’ He pushed some lists off the bed.

‘Even after this. You are one of the most contradictory people I’ve ever met. You confound me. You carry such a violent strength of belief yet sometimes you just give up; you have a self-confidence that borders on arrogance, yet you are humble; you take the side of the victim every time, yet how many times have you martyred yourself? And I know you love me, no matter how many times I’ve rolled my eyes or laughed at you or turned you away. And I’m sorry for all those times. I love you, Mulder, because I know your heart. Your heart is your truth. Always.’

She kissed his tears. ‘What was this list, Mulder?’ She found the first one she’d read.

‘These were the restaurants that served the best pizza.’

She giggled and sat up.

‘What were you looking for in here anyway, Scully?’

‘I was looking for a place to put my cases.’

He fingered the chain around her neck. ‘You’re coming back to me?’

‘To your heart.’

Album Review: Mad Love by JoJo

Since her last major album release, Joanna “JoJo” Levesque has released two mixtapes titled Can’t Take That Away From Me and Agápē while embroiled in a battle for her musical life with her former record label. Now free to release new music and signed to Atlantic Records she is ready to reclaim her place in the industry and she definitely makes a strong statement with her new album Mad Love. Prior to releasing her album, she released a teaser of things to come with three singles, what JoJo called a “tringle” which included When Love Hurts, Save My Soul and Say Love, all of which were accompanied by music videos. All three singles captured her vocal strength and soul. I knew when I heard those three singles that we were in for something exceptional and raw with her album Mad Love and I was not disappointed.

The album feels like a musical journey that catches us all up on what JoJo’s journey has been like so far in her life and where she is at this point. Emerging onto the scene at the age of 13, this is definitely a more mature sound from the talented songstress.

1. Music.

As I hit play, the first track took me by surprise. I’m used to hitting play and immediately hearing an upbeat track that feels like a club hit that you’ll hear on a Saturday night. I can’t remember the last time I listened to an album that started with a low tempo track, that showcased an artist’s voice accompanied only by a piano and that bared an artists’ soul so profoundly. Music is about the impact that music has had in JoJo’s life. She gives us a sneak peek into her life and how it all started. JoJo displays her vulnerability in this track and it is quite amazing and powerful to hear. I’m not going to lie, this track brought me to tears, which I definitely didn’t expect. When she begins to sing about her father, you can hear the pain and power intermingling and you can feel that emotion when you listen to her voice. It’s that kind of raw emotion that tends to get filtered out in the production process and kudos to JoJo and her team for capturing it and allowing it to stay pure throughout the song and especially after this part of the song. The way the track ended wasn’t my favourite but overall, this is an amazing song.

2. I Can Only. (feat. Alessia Cara)

This track features Alessia Cara, the Canadian singer who has emerged onto the scene with empowering songs. You just know that when she joins forces with JoJo they are going to bring it with this track. This track is about being yourself and choosing to live life the way you live it. You can only be who you can be and that’s all that should really be expected of a person. This is something that JoJo wrote about in her article for Motto and you can (and should) read that here. The track is catchy but ultimately, I love the message that is relayed to the listener. On top of that the blending of Alessia and JoJo’s voices are perfect. I really like this track.

3. F*** Apologies. (feat. Wiz Khalifa)

This is the edgier side of JoJo that I didn’t expect but the track is another song that really has an empowering undertone. To me, it’s all about not saying sorry for things that aren’t your fault. A lot of time people, especially women, feel the need to say sorry even when things aren’t their fault just to make the situation better. This is song is JoJo’s ways of saying she’s not apologizing for things that are clearly the other person’s fault just to make the person happy or make the situation better; the other party needs to step up. The track overall has a cool vibe. It’s not aggressive at all and is more of a matter of fact kind of delivery. JoJo’s vocals continue to shine.

4. FAB. (feat. Remy Ma)

Okay now, let’s talk about FAB. JoJo explained in an interview to EW that this song is basically about the people you encounter in life and in the music industry that are fake. We all know those people. They’re around when you’re on top of your game and as soon as you hit a speed bump in life they are out of there so fast they leave a trail of dust. Once again JoJo does a perfect job of making the track powerful but not angry. She’s just stating it as a matter of fact and putting it out there that she’s not one for the fake people in life. JoJo has been open about her struggles through the past 10 years, since her last major label release and the lyrics capture the feeling that it was during this time that she saw people’s true faces. Overall this track is strong and is one of my favourite songs on the album. The lyrics sum it all up and the beat just perfectly compliments the strength and overall tone of the track.

5. Mad Love.

This track has more of a jazz/blues feeling to it and it’s just a really cool track. In an interview with Vogue, JoJo stated that this song is about being in one of those relationships where you know that it’s probably not the best for you but the emotions are so strong and intense that you end up staying. However, in another interview she stated that this song can take on a number of different meanings and can be anything you’ve got Mad Love for in your life. JoJo co-wrote this song (along with all of the other songs on this album) and she stays really open and truthful and is able to evoke that emotion to the listener with the words and her voice. You can almost feel the emotions while listening to her music which is the standard of great music, at least in my eyes. JoJo’s voice sounds amazing and just shows off another layer. This girl has soul and she’s showing it off through her vocals.

6. Vibe.

The transition from Mad Love to Vibe is the perfect example of the multilayered approach to this album taken by JoJo. There’s such a perfect display of different musical styles but it doesn’t feel out of place. It takes a special kind of artist to pull that off. This song also feels like the next chapter in this album dealing with love, relationships and just general all around fun. Vibe in particular is a really carefree kind of song that allows you to really let loose and not take life too seriously.

7. Honest.

This song is a spectacular display of truth and honesty just laid out right in front of us if we’re able to listen and take it all in. The track is split into two with the first part dealing with heartbreak and that relationship that doesn’t provide you with what you need. The love and security that makes you feel warm and safe. The second part of the track deals with honesty. It also deals with the double standard that females deal with that their male counterparts just don’t. It’s a fantastic portrayal of society and JoJo’s viewpoint into her life and how she’s dealt with the double standards with honesty. She’s not going to hide herself or what’s she’s dealing with and she’s not going to allow anyone to apply a double standard to her life. The layers in these tracks that just keep revealing more on each listen is one of the reasons that I really like this album.

8. Like This.

This track seems to escalate this section of the album and shows that JoJo is all grown up dealing with more mature themes. It’s a very sensual song but it’s more subtle and not as in your face as other tracks that you probably hear on the radio. It’s got a strong R&B feel to it and the elements of this track along with the instrumentality just works so well in this song and elevates the whole feeling of this track.

9. Edibles.

This track adheres to the theme of this section of the album. As JoJo explained in an interview with Idolator about the song, “It’s about getting high and having sex [laughs].” JoJo isn’t shy about being completely open about her life and this track is just another example of us getting insight into JoJo. Some people may think it’s over sharing but if you’ve heard songs being released on the radio, there are some very in your face lyrics out there and this is no where that strong. It’s clear enough to get the point across but it’s not so in your face. This is such a hard line to balance on and JoJo is able to sing about anything, including edibles, and still stay perched so effortlessly on the line without pushing it. The thing I appreciate about this album is that you may not be able to relate to everything but you can sense all of the emotions and feelings that come across so well with each track. That is not easy to do and I give JoJo a lot of props for that.

10. High Heels.

This song is about JoJo finding out that her guy is cheating on her and her getting revenge, not by going out and smashing his things or torching his car, but rather by walking out and showing the guy what he is missing out on. This is one of those songs where you are like “yes, JoJo!” She knows her worth, she knows that he’s going to regret cheating on her and he’s going to appreciate what he had only after she walks out. The thing that I like about this track is that there’s less of an emphasis on the guy and how he cheated and more of an “I’m worth more than that” kind of focus. JoJo is holding onto her power and isn’t allowing any guy to bring her down. It’s a bit more edgy but like I said it fits so well with the flow of this album that nothing feels out of place.

11. I Am.

I Am is a transition from the sound of High Heels but carries on the theme of self-worth that seems to set up the latter half of this album and brings us to the next part of the album’s journey. This is an incredible song. Lyrically it captures that feeling that most of us get in our lives, especially women, when we just don’t feel like we like what’s reflecting back to us in the mirror. It deals with insecurity and self-doubt while once again enhancing the ability each and every single one of us have to empower ourselves. It deals so incredibly with the conflict but it feels like a winning battle because we all have self-worth and beauty that we don’t always see but that’s the beauty of this track, it reminds us that it’s there. JoJo’s voice shines on this track and reflects the true strength not only in her voice but captures the essence of strength within each of us. The track is simply her voice and a piano but it feels full, which echoes the power of her vocals. This truly is a special song.

12. Clovers.

Clovers is an incredible, upbeat song that could easily be a single from the album and surprisingly it didn’t make the cut for the standard edition but is available on the Deluxe edition of the album. The lyrics perfectly capture the moments of uncertainty and battle with depression that JoJo faced while involved in a battle with her former record company. It’s a song with a deep meaning that provides the closure from that period in her life but also is another song of empowerment that provides hope for the listener that no matter what they are going through in their life, they can look forward to the time that will come when the difficulty passes and you weather the storm, making it out and seeing the beauty that the world has to offer. Life will be okay. The song has more layers in terms of production but it never feels overproduced and it never overpowers the vocals. It achieves that perfect place of balance and evokes the power of hope. This song is perfect.

13. Reckless.

Normally you get songs about being scorned by another but this is a song is the complete opposite. It is such an honest and raw glimpse into the mistakes that JoJo made in a past relationship and how she wishes that she hadn’t inflicted the damage on the other party that she did. This song is the epitome of vulnerability and truth and lyrically just lays it all out there. I was surprised when I heard this track because you don’t normally hear such truth in a song just laid out there, but that is the power of this album. It’s honest. It’s truly a journey. Once again, this isn’t an overproduced track, it feels rather simple but it’s just perfectly simple. It makes sure that the focus is on JoJo’s incredible vocals and the emotions. This one definitely surprised me in the best way and is one of my favourite songs off of Mad Love just because it is so honest.

14. Good Thing.

This is that perfect upbeat, club track that will get you up and dancing when you hear it. It really does leave you feeling good. The balance is once again achieved between the production and the vocals, which remain the ultimate star of this song. JoJo’s voice sounds powerful, is never drowned out and she proves that she is on her game and better than ever before (and she was already a powerhouse before).

15. Rise Up.

This song is another upbeat song and it’s another feel good song. This is the final song on the Deluxe Edition of the album and it captures the true essence of this album, Love. You can tell that this whole thing was made from a place of love for the music and for the whole process. JoJo has gone through a lot in her life so far and she could have easily released an album filled with anger towards her former label and all those that have hurt her in the past but she chooses to rise above all of that and write from a place of love. That is the feeling you get when you listen to this track and the album as a whole. This album truly is an adventure, a journey and a story of rising above the trials and tribulations and coming out stronger with your head held high.

Overall

The one thing that I really love about this album is that it has layers. There are some albums where you hear a lot of tracks that cohesively go together within a particular genre but end up sounding similar. In addition, those albums feel like just tracks placed together because they kind of just fit. This is one of those albums where you go on a journey with JoJo from the beginning to the end. It tells a complete story and you follow along through the ups and downs. Not only that, you feel the emotions that are perfectly conveyed in each track with the special blend of melodies, instrumental layers, lyrics, and of course JoJo’s voice. There aren’t just layers with respect to the songs, there are multiple layers in her voice. She goes from smooth to soulful with a slight rasp to everything in between. It can capture and emote the feelings perfectly while evoking power and an incredible vulnerability and rawness. JoJo’s voice is the magical ingredient on this album, as it should be. This is what music is all about and this is what the industry should be focusing on. Real talent. There isn’t an over produced sound here and you’re not left with shallow, auto-tuned vocals. You’re left with true music and I for one am a happy music fan.

It’s one of those music memes! You put your library on shuffle and you write the first 9 songs that come up and your favourite lyrics from them. This sounds like fun! I’m probably gonna go on and on about this so I’ll put the rest of this post under a break. I’m skipping instrumental songs, and songs by the same band (unless it’s like, one of my favourite songs or something). I’ll also put links to the songs in case you wanna listen! (Also please note, I’ve put warnings for possibly-triggering content so please read the descriptions if you need to.)

1. Deftones - Knife Prty I could float here forever In this room, we can’t touch the floor This is absolutely my favourite song from White Pony. It rocks, it’s vaguely depressing, it perfectly fits my self-image lol. There’s lots of good Deftones songs but this is one of the best. If there was ever a soundtrack for my life, this song would probably be on it (actually I’m playing songs from the “if my life had a soundtrack” playlist so they’re all gonna be like this haha).

2. Incubus - Blood On The Ground From now on, gonna start holding my breath when you come around and you flex that fake grin ‘Cause something inside me has said more than twice that breathing less air beats breathing you in So this song seems uncharacteristically like me, but... deep down inside, I am a bitter, resentful person who thinks there are too damn many people in the world. There have been people in my life, for whatever reason, that just grate on my nerves, and I can’t tell them due to social mores and all that (please don’t worry, it’s no one on here, you all are fantastic, these are just skeletons in my closet lol).

3. Metric - Lost Kitten Halfway starts with happiness for me Halfway house lost kitten in the street Hit me where it hurts, I was coming home to lose Kitten on the catwalk, high heeled shoes God I love this song. It’s so upbeat and fun-sounding, and the lyrics are equal parts cheeky and sad (and clever) (so basically like any other Metric song). Plus Emily’s voice is fucking amazing <3

4. Blue Foundation - Eyes On Fire I won’t soothe your pain I won’t ease your strain You’ll be waiting in vain I’ve got nothing for you to gain So... this is one of those songs where I can always appreciate the delicious guitar tone, but I have to be in a Very Specific Mood to really appreciate the song as a whole. The lyrics are actually really kinda depressing (well, the ones I can understand, anyway), which is just absolutely what I need sometimes. (Also apparently this is a cover version or a remix or something of this song; I once sought out the original and I really didn’t like it as much.)

5. Porcupine Tree - Anesthetize Because of who we are We react in mock surprise The curse of “there must be more” So don’t breathe here Don’t leave your bags Well, this song has a lot of good lyrics to pick from, since it’s like almost 18 minutes long (though at least half of it is instrumental). These are some good ones. I never quite know how to feel about this song. Musically, I love it, but it’s not one of my favourite songs. Lyrically, I laugh along bitterly and nod in understanding, yet I never catch myself singing it. It’s in a weird limbo of sorts.

6. Marianas Trench - Say Anything Hurts the same when nobody knows Guess that’s just how it goes And I, I won’t say anything at all OH FUCK I LOVE THIS SONG. This whole album is so incredible. Josh Ramsay is a goddamn musical genius, even when he was an angsty fucking teenager, because he captured that feeling PERFECTLY. Any time I want to feel like I’m in high school again I just have to put on this album (even though I had been out of high school for like 3 years when it came out lol). (Also TW for self-harm in the lyrics)

7. Tool - Jimmy Hold your light, Eleven. Lead me through each gentle step by step by inch by loaded memory. I’ll move to heal as soon as pain allows so we can reunite and both move on together. Hold your light, Eleven. Lead me through each gentle step by step by inch by loaded memory til one and one are one, Eleven. So glow, child, glow. I’m heading back home. Yes, I know that was a big chunk of lyrics, but that’s my whole favourite part of that song. I was SO into Tool back in the day, wowzers. Some of these songs still hit me right in the feels.

8. Killjoys - Rave & Drool It was just another cure Never bother, just ignore I’m not anything at all I’m not a monster, I’m a friend who raves and drools This is an ooooooold song for me, musically. I first heard this waaaay back in elementary school, when I picked up a copy of Big Shiny Tunes. I’m pretty sure it was this compilation album that set me on the musical path I ended up going down. It’s still a solid song, 20 years later (the video is SO 90S THO OMG). (Also holy shit seizure warning for this video, yikes)

9. Queens Of The Stone Age - In The Fade They don’t know I never do you any good Laughing is easy I would if I could This album probably has most of my favourite QOTSA songs (except for like... 3), and this is one of the top faves. It just sounds really cool, and it is really, like, My Aesthetic... musically. I don’t know, I just really like this one.
