occasionally i wind up in a conversation with someone whose only knowledge of star trek comes from the latest shows and i mention i'm reluctant to watch snw because i see spock being really emotional in gifs and i worry he'll be really out of character and every time they will say to me "oh that's because it's a prequel! they're showing HOW he became the spock in the original series, like learning to control his emotions and everything" and i'm like you mean his childhood? you mean when he was raised on vulcan by a vulcan?? you mean when he was brought up in a culture that taught him to control his emotions from birth as part of his culture and heritage???? and they'll say "it's because he's only half vulcan you know so it's harder for him" and i have to end the conversation there so i don't rip their throat out while attempting to explain that humans can also control their emotions and that wouldn't really help my point if i let myself do that

"You have to let them. Find that person who seems farthest from you and reach for them. Reach for them. Let them guide you." I don't know if I've mentioned before, but I've just realized (again), that the reason Spock went after Chapel so hard is not only cause she's a good friend, but from his perspective, Chapel, who's the "complete opposite" of himself (Sung in the musical episode), he may have seen her as the person that was the "farthest" from him, in personality and mind.
And obviously, later in life, he actually finds it with Jim.

just finished season 2 of Lower Decks and i'm SO glad i tried this show again
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i actually started the show a while ago, but the constant easter eggs put me off.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(i still don't know how non-Trekkie viewers are meant to get the jokes where the punchline is "reference!! 😂", but lots of people enjoy it so ymmv).
i stopped a few minutes into episode 2 after Rutherford agrees to quit his job as an engineer so he can watch the Trivoli pulsar with Tendi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i honestly thought it was going to be a storyline about a guy giving up a job he loves and making his boss angry so that he can spend time with a female friend he has a crush on, because that's the plotline i've been conditioned to expect from tv. i wasn't feeling excited about the show, so i put it on pause.
but if i'd watched for about two more seconds before noping out for a few months, i would've seen this:
Tumblr media
when i started watching again, i realised that the episodes never bog themselves down in drawn-out, uncomfortable storyline or character staples - they're actually incredibly well-written, tightly paced, and tell their stories in just the right amount of time. Rutherford wants to be Tendi's friend (at least for now), his boss Billups is really supportive, and Tendi brings a PADD into the Jefferies tube so they can both do what they enjoy, separately but together.
Tumblr media
another great part about that scene with Rutherford and his boss is something that Lower Decks does a lot, which is make jokes that actually rely on subverting audience expectations. a big example - and a way of referencing other parts of the Star Trek franchise that does work for me - is when the creators gently poke fun at or subvert common story beats, emotional arcs, or dramatic moments from other parts of Trek.
like when Rutherford loses his memory and Tendi is excited to get to know him again, rather than devastated that he doesn't remember her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or when they save themselves from being smooshed by Dooplers by dramatically ejecting the warp core of their tiny model starship.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
or when Tendi goes on an arc of significant personal development over the course of one (1) whole episode.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
they're general enough that even people who haven't seen other Star Trek shows (or movies) can still recognise and appreciate them.
beyond this, the show also has great moments where they (lovingly) cast a light on some of the flaws and foibles in the franchise, often in subtle or comedic ways.
like showing people in beep chairs living their best lives (in contrast to TOS and SNW's view of the beep chair as a tragic, doomsday fate for Pike).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or using Tendi to comment on Trek's depiction of Orions specifically as all pirates and slavers, and alien cultures more generally as monocultures.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
or even just acknowledging that Trek shows mostly focus on the bridge crew doing heroic first contact-esque adventures, when that can't be all there is to Starfleet.
Tumblr media
heck, they even have Rutherford go on a journey of acceptance and self-discovery after a permanent memory wipe (in contrast to Uhura in TOS, where it's never mentioned again).
Tumblr media
another reason i really appreciate the show is that the creators have taken the time to think through what a more inclusive future could look like, in ways that are noticeably lacking or absent in many other Trek shows:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
beyond exploring diversity through explicit identity representation (which is still very important), it does this through its world building as well.
Tumblr media
i love this communal sonic shower scene for what it says about gender and body politics in Trek. in the future, why would we still separate bathrooms and changing rooms by gender? and why would we have the same views and expectations around bodies that we (by "we" i mean Western countries) do now?
this short scene dismantles the idea that nudity is inherently sexual, that gender is binary and biological, that some genders can't be trusted around other genders while naked, and that heterosexuality is the default (and when you bring dozens of alien species into the mix, why wouldn't we have more and newer ways of thinking about gender?). it even has a little mention that Boimler prefers not to shower with others, leaving space for people to act however feels most comfortable for them.
it's such a little thing, but after years spent (lovingly) yelling at the screen during TNG, TOS, DS9, etc saying, "why are they assuming everyone is straight? WHY would people be this sexist?", i noticed it immediately and appreciated it immensely.
(this isn't related to the storytelling, but i also have to say - the animation in Lower Decks is so pretty???):
Tumblr media
this isn't a perfect show, but it's funny, has fantastic storytelling, and it loves the source material without worshipping it. (which is not something i expected to say, given how it started).
plus i love these characters SO MUCH.
Tumblr media
so far, so very good 🤞.

Least favorite Star Trek character in each series?
i love all my children equally how could you do this to me!!!!
slightly more rational answer: i have been thinking about this since yesterday when i got the ask and it's like every time i think i have an answer i immediately go "oh but i love them for XYZ" and they move up in the ranks. ultimately most treks are ensemble shows and removing anybody from the ensemble makes it all fall apart!
gun to my head, though, bearing in mind that i love all of them:
tos: gun to my head it's chapel i'm afraid and i feel bad about it. she doesn't really get to grow much and the other most-static character is probably chekov and i had a massive crush on him. in 1967 when they went "you know this show should add a mop top for the teenyboppers out there" they were talking specifically about me 30 years later.
tng: i would take the bullet for real.
ds9: man i'm going through main characters and then secondary characters and then tertiary characters and how are they all so essential and good????? literally i have gone thru a list of characters and a list of episodes and am coming up blank. even the villains are fantastic. eddington is annoying but he's supposed to be and his episodes are all great. sloan himself is fun it's just what section 31 did to star trek in general that sucks. like????? there's not a single name that shows up in the credits that doesn't make me go YEAHHHHHH.
voy: if we can count recurring characters i'm saying barclay. i liked him a lot as a character in tng and but go "for fuck's sake" whenever i see "guest star dwight schultz" on the voyager credits. i dislike pretty much every earth-contact episode after "message in a bottle" so maybe i don't like voyager-barclay because he just happens to be there?? for main cast it'd be neelix shut up shut up i love him in the ensemble but sometimes when they give him his own episode it's too much.
ent: sorry malcolm lovers this was the only show that was an easy choice. like we SHOULD dig into the fact that essentially his greatest wish is to sacrifice himself and he won't be happy until he dies on the job. klingon behavior but not at all for the fun and glory of it just because he kind of just doesn't enjoy being alive???? archer is terrible in so many ways but he's also much more enjoyable to watch being terrible.
disco: this is actually a very weird show to even know who to choose from. the cast changes every year! we barely even know the bridge crew! who is interesting enough to count as a main character?? of the main title cast i'm kind of hot and cold with adira. i like them but the sheer amount of anxiety radiating off them at all times makes me tense up whenever they come on screen. (i just realized it's kind of ironic to say adira because they're basically a mix of wesley and ezri, who would probably make this list for most other trekkies but are two of my absolute faves.) (i will think long and hard about this)
snw: i don't know that i have enough of a read on any of them? i still haven't finished it. chapel (again?? oh no) is the one i had the hardest time warming up to early on because she seemed the most wink-y and out of place in a franchise that usually takes silly things very seriously, but i did warm up to her!
lower decks: if we can go with guest characters i hate badgey (only one on here that gathers the "hate" rating!!). i don't find him (it??) funny and i know i SHOULD find it funny which means whenever it shows up i am both not having a good time and feel bad about not having a good time. the main characters are all brilliant. gun to my head it's boims but it's a close one i love them all.
i don't even know what other shows we have i've run out of steam???
oh right picard. captain shaw??? why is such a large subset of fandom so horny for him??? and shipping him with seven of nine of all things???? is it just White Guy With Trauma because there are like. a lot of other white guys with trauma in this franchise to choose from.

Hi Y'all! I'm gonna try to get back on here! (Y'all can skip this if you want!)
Hi ❤️ ok so I hope y'all are all doing well! I know it's been I've a year since I've posted anything really or like done any interaction and stuff. But towards the end of the summer I got really busy getting ready to go back to school and then my anxiety about interacting with like anyone started acting up and like it kinda just stayed there for a while. And then I also kinda got distracted a little bit from Peaky Blinders and writing stuff, but I'm gonna try to get back on here now. I will admit I haven't been looking at to many things for Peaky Blinders recently as I've been a bit more into other shows and have been watching them more than reading lately (EX: X-Files (Fox Mulder), Star Trek SNW (Spock), Star Trek TOS (Kirk), Justified, All the CSI's, Criminal Minds, etc).
But yeah like that's been happening and I feel bad because I kept meaning to get back on and then I didn't. But I think it should be all good now. I just stared my senior year in college, and I've started anxiety meds which have helped a lot, and I've got a remote internship I'm still going to be doing for a bit so I still can't say how regularly I'll be posting or getting on here but I just wanted to start trying to do it again, without maybe going to fast and scaring myself off again😅 Also Tumblr seems to have glitches and deleted a few messages on my end that were sent to me but I don't get a chance to respond to to if y'all sent something and I did't see it I'm very sorry. I tumblr seems to be giving me issues about working it on my phone right now which is how I usually do it all. And I'm going to try and up date that.
In terms of works written works, the WIP list I made like a year ago is still the current list of what's finished along with a small number of incorrect quotes and random stuff I need to filter through. I do have one story I'm going to try and post right after this before I go to classes again and then I'll try checking in back after I finish work today. So that will be updated. And then I've been stuck writing lately so I'm going to slowly trying to start getting back into it!
But yeah... that's all I can think of for now. I'm not sure what else to say really but that I hope y'all are doing well and thank you to everyone who enjoyed my stories even when I was gone, I'm glad that I could hopefully brighten you day a bit:)

Star Trek asks: 🖖, 🌀 and 👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏾
🖖 First Star Trek Media you encountered:
We watched TNG on television when I was a kid (as it was airing the first time!). One of my earliest memories (I was 4) is of Will Riker getting sucked into the big black Armus pool and how freaky that was. I remember the face coming up from the bottom.
And they saved him! he was okay. (Tasha's death did not compute in my very small mind). Will being okay in the end was part of "Star Trek means we're all okay" which is my earliest opinion.
Often this still carries over.
🌀 If the Holodeck was real, what's the first thing you would use it for?
adventure fantasy RPGs. I'd love to be able to play something like Dragon Age. It would be incredible.
I would also use it to test out fic lines and positions and make sure they make sense. I have no sense of inner eye, so that would be helpful. Where do her hands go...
👩🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👩🏾 Do you ship any characters? Who?
Oh Georgiou.
I don't have any strong preferences about ships in some series. My levels of shipping are:
Ships I find cute on screen. (USS Enterprise-G)
Ships I would read fic. I would probably write fic for an exchange or a challenge. (USS Enterprise-D)
Ships I would write fic for, because I want the fic to bring myself joy and those are much more intense. (USS Voyager) I will land my starship on this planet.
Ships that are platonic for me and I adore them. (USS Protostar)
Ships where I want to read everything that has ever been written about them. I have saved all the artwork. I want to commission more artwork. (USS DIscovery) I will travel through the mycelial network for this ship. This ship is my home.
(under a cut for length)
TOS - no ships. Never really had any. TOS is not foundational for me though, I don't think I've seen the whole thing and probably never will. It's so much men talking.
AOS - I have a soft spot for Spock/Uhura. I really liked Uhura.
TNG - I shipped Deanna/Will so much as a child. They're in my very first fanfic. I liked Beverly/Jean-Luc (historical) later, but not until I was an adult. Deanna/Will I shipped as a very tiny human. I have witten fic for both of these. I also ship Beverly/Deanna, and Beverly/Deanna/Will in a very lighthearted way.
DS9 - Jadzia Dax/Lenara Kahn is gorgeous and tragic and I adore them. Kira/Dax in a very lighthearted way. They're fun. I shipped Jadzia Dax/Worf when the show first came out and probably would if I did a rewatch, but it's a very mild ship (I wouldn't read fic). I am very invested in Jadzia Dax.
VOY - Kathryn Janeway/B'Elanna Torres is fun. I've read some fic. I love how intellectual they would be together. I wrote and read much Janeway/Chakotay (historical) about ten years ago, but I'm not as into him now. (Robert Beltran makes it hard for me). Still love Janeway. I also like Seven/B'Elanna.
ENT - I enjoyed Trip/T'Pol when the show was on. I don't think I've seen all of it. I love T'Pol.
SNW - I have a passing interest in Una/La'An and Una/Pike. I've read some fic but haven't written any. I want nice things for Batel/Pike in canon. (he needs to be a better partner to her though). I ship Amanda/Sarek here simply based on how convince I am that Amanda loves him.
PIC - Seven/Raffi are wonderful and I adore them. I love their connection and their dear faces. Agnes/Borg Queen are fun and dark. Laris/Zhaban are fun. I wanted to ship Beverly/Jean-Luc again but they didn't give me much. Shipper brain was not engaged. Deanna/Will were so angsty. Will & Beverly might be my strongest legacy ship in this show. I wish Beverly & Deanna got to talk.
PRODIGY - dammit here I almost ship Janeway/Chakotay again. I ship Janeway/happiness here so much and if finding him will make her happy, okay fine. Gwyndala/Dal are cute and I want them to have nice things. Haven't wanted to read any fic though.
Crossover Trek - Beverly Crusher/Kathryn Janeway has held a special place in my shipper heart for 13 years. I love them so much. I love that they're still going and they show up in exchanges. They would be such a good couple.
Philippa Georgiou/Afsaneh Paris was such a fun thing.
Most trek crossover femslash is fun and I would try it in an exchange.
DSC - Philippa Georgiou (captain)/Katrina Cornwell. They'd be cute. They must have met. Katrina Cornwell/Gabriel Lorca (prime), Katrina sold me on that one. Katrina Cornwell/Philippa Georgiou (emperor), they have a handful of scenes and they would totally work.
Michael Burnham/Cleveland Booker are very cute on screen and I hope they get a nice ending. (I think they will). Hugh Culber/Paul Stamets are adorable and charming. Adira Tal/Gray Tal are so sweet. Saru/T'Rina are the regency couple of Star Trek and they're very cute. They're so happy in season 5, I love it. I think Joann Owosekun/Keyla Detmer are really fun, I hope they get a nod this season. I love how much the actors do with a look. Michael & Tilly are one of my favorite friendships ever and I adore them. Michael Burnham & Philippa Georgiou (emperor) variety is so complex and intense and I love how they evolve and grow together.
Michael Burnham/Laira Rillak are my top tier, own my soul, ship. I will read every fic that is ever published of them and reblog the gifs on repeat forever and memorize every nuance of every conversation they've ever had. They are the shiniest thing in my fannish heart at the moment, and I have watched their scenes together so many times.
For years I was this obsessed with Beverly/Kathryn, but they didn't have scenes together so I couldn't rewatch them.
Micahel/Laira have scenes together! They talk to each other! I have a whole arc that I can watch on repeat!! I have different episodes to watch for different feelings I need for fic!!
They're so niche and I wish I had more people to talk about them with because I love them so much and...it is a very lonely ship. People do write fic and read it and it's tiny and lovely. I am so grateful for all the interactions I ever have about this ship.
I often feel very out of step in my fannish Star Trek spaces because they are not a ship shared by many. I feel seen when someone acknowledges how much I love them.

I forgot to post about it yesterday, but it doesn't really matter since it's not gonna trend anyway: So maybe it's because I haven't seen the progenitors in TNG yet, but I thought the ending of Discovery was pretty average and a bit too sappy. Then I thought about that I can't remember ever finishing an installment of Star Trek; I don't remember if I ever saw the end of TOS as a kid and I'm still in season 2 of TNG and SNW isn't finished yet, so maybe I just don't know what Star Trek end of season episodes are usually like and was comparing it to other series.
But what struck me is how on the nose the humanism was in this episode. I grew up with humanist teachings; my elementary school offered a class for the non-Christian kids that was based on humanist ideas, and it took me a while to realize that's where a lot of my philosophical standpoints came from. Later in my life I learned about existentialism and since then I consider myself one. You could argue that those are two sides of the same coin, one optimist and one pessimist, but I prefer to think of existentialism as the realistic one.
And I think what this thought process boils down to is this: ever since I started reading and watching The Expanse I just find Star Trek a bit too unrealistic. I know it never had the intention to be realistic, but apparently that's what I'm currently looking for or have been looking for in the media I consume to entertain myself for a looong time and that's probably why I can't bring myself to read fantasy novels anymore.
Maybe it's that.
Or maybe it's just my depression.

I was so scared to get into startrek bc a mix of the fandom and the sheer size of the series makes it really hard getting into the show. And now that I've basically become obsessed with it I still feel like a shitty fan. I haven't watched every episode of the original shows. Hell I haven't even seen 1 episode of the original or ds9, I've watched a smidge of Voyager, a good chunk of next gen, the last season of picard, and all of snw and disco. And there's a lot of ppl who feel you can only really be a fan if you watch the original but like, idk the older ones are more boring to me??? Not saying that they're bad exactly just that they don't really capture my attention the way the newer ones do. But I LOVE strange new worlds and disco (I also really love next gen but I'll talk about that another day lol) and when that damn musical episode came out me and my mom were SO EXCITED (we still sing the songs) and then you go online and i saw literally everyone hating on it?? And I was so confused bc it was such a fun episode! I hate the idea that startrek has to be a super serious show that all about the science, why can't it be fun?? And I've talked about this in depth with my mother but if people WANT startrek to stay alive they need to switch it up. Want younger gens to watch??? MAKE IT MORE FUN!! I feel like snw is such a cool show and if marketed better could be a bigger thing with younger people lol, anyways this is a big ramble but I really love startrek so 🥲

fic author q&a
thank you @the-lady-general for tagging me, I love to procrastinate by doing stuff like this.
1. Why do you write fanfic?
because my brain is a relentless what-if machine and it can't be stopped or tamed. If I wasn't writing it down I'd be losing time just thinking about it, trust me, its far better this way.
and because I love writing, love the fic community, and just love creativity. I've been reading fic literally every single day since I was 11 or 12 and I'm now 38. I'm passionate about the fic writing world and my experience in the 'conventional' writing space has been nothing but anxiety, inferiority and bitterness.
2. Which of your posted stories do you think about the most, even though the story is “finished”?
I don't tend to feel like that about my stories, because I am always up to write sequels or prequels to things, or add stuff onto various universes. I still think often about weibermacht, which is the name of the sex club in my Hitman stories, and one day I will write a proper weibermacht story, but the reason I still think about stories is because they aren't properly finished. I also think a lot about the watch me series because I feel guilty that I never finished it. I have at least another 3 stories in various stages of writing.
I'm planning on doing a WIP amnesty next year (once One Man is finished), and I'm hoping that it will get me to finish some of these things I want to return to, but haven't since.
3. If you could give yourself fic advice from when you first started writing fic, what would that advice be?
Use the momentum of being really into something to make more art. Write as much fic as you can, and don't let guilt catch up with you. It doesn't matter if it sucks; you have to love it, and if you love it in the moment, you are going in the right direction.
4. What’s your relationship to fic stats?
As a professional sort-of statistician I adore them, I wish there were more of them, specifically available over time, and also the number of subscriptions to series would help me as someone who writes in that way. BUT: comparison is the thief of joy. My big fic-related breakdown was over constantly comparing myself to the people I thought were my peers. Stats don't tell you why you aren't doing better than someone, and I know from my profession that you can't just assume things from numbers.
5. Is there a pairing or scenario or friendship you miss writing? If so, why? If not, why not?
I miss Stormpilot (Finn/Poe) circa 2017. What a beautiful time. It will never come again, even if we got something to make the ship sail again, the world has changed.
6. What motivates you to write?
Much like the lady general, I am motivated by wanting to tell jokes, or by specific ideas that enter my brain and won't let go. I am motivated to keep going on one man because there are specific stories I need to share with the rest of the class, but I must tell the rest of the story in order to get there. The journey is the point, but so is the punchline.
7. Why do you write for the fandom(s) that you write for?
Star Trek, specifically SNW, is my current blorbo, so I write for myself and my id on that one. Hitman is for the thirsty thirteen and because its OTP. Oxventure is...complicated. I am so very burned out on that fandom. Super Secret RPF pairing is because of my co-conspirators <3. I've also written way, way too many things because Phoenix and I have talked about them and I've then be POSSESSED.
8. If you’re stuck writing a WIP, what do you do?
As long as I'm still interested in the project, I do my best to push through. I have the philosophy that a story doesn't really exist until it is published anyway. I do have an abandoned WIP folder, and within that is a folder called 'look I'm never writing these ones'. There are 12 stories in that folder. Meanwhile there are 134 I have yet to give up on, not including the 4 that are currently in progress (not including one man.)
Basically I need another WIP amnesty.
9. What do you wish people knew about comments?
They really are the fuel on the fire. I have finished stories because of comments. I have written entire worlds because of comments. I do my best to answer every single comment, and I try to also leave comments as much as I can. At the same time, I have to, for my own sanity, try not to put too much stock in them, because we have to be self-fuelling machines, we have to be self-raising lazaruses. You have to write for yourself, because if you base everything on other people's opinions, you will die nobody.
10. Maybe there’s a question you wish had been on here. What’s that question (and answer)?
I think the question I'd like to ask is what is your personal greatest fic achievement? Not your most popular story, what was the story that you still look at and go: I will never not be proud of that achievement. Mine is the fact I have published 750,000 words and 130 stories and I still feel like I'm only just getting started. That the perseverance over the last 14 years proves that I can do whatever I set my mind to, that I am valuable in a way that matters, and all the doubters of my youth can go fuck themselves forever.
I'm tagging @postalninja, @stickthisbig, @android-and-ale and @alienfuckeronmain and anyone else who wants to do it. lets navel gaze, lads.

SNW Episode 9 Poll - the Musical and K/S
After seeing the trailer for the musical episode, I was suddenly reminded of an interview that Peck and Wesley gave about a month and a half ago about what to expect from their characters this season.
Tumblr media
Wesley saying they are "dancing around" reads as figurative and that's a normal thing to say, but I kind of wonder now that we know there's a musical episode, if he was being possibly literal. See below the poll for an explanation.
There's some evidence that they will interact again in some capacity. We know that in E6, Kirk and Spock (hereafter K&S) have just met. However, Spock only says a single word to Kirk (that we hear), which is "Frustrating."
I wouldn’t call that 'a lot of curiosity', nor would I call Kirk 'daring' from Spock's perspective, all they've done is hold hands and drink alcohol. Kirk has also watched him from across a room, but I wouldn't call it real mutual curiosity yet. Spock wasn't around for most of the episode where Kirk was doing anything. There's no reason for him to feel suspicion or caution.
So these are the facts:
They've met.
Kirk has expressed interest in Spock, but not the other way around.
K&S are both present in the musical episode, E9.
We haven't seen Spock feature in the trailer doing anything that people in musicals do. They also didn't feature Spock interacting with Kirk in any of the promotional material for the show, so this isn't entirely unexpected if he's going to see Kirk again.
They probably need to interact again before the end of the season.
There's no proof Kirk is in another late episode (E8 or E10) besides E9.
They still need to show curiosity from Spock's side, and demonstrate Kirk is somehow daring or different.
Do we think it's possible they have some kind of musical or non-musical interaction in this episode? Or do we think that the meeting was all we get this season? I am hard pressed to believe that the 30 second meeting we got demonstrated the "curiosity" and "suspicion" hinted at by these two.

Some good news and some bad news regarding Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. The good news is that now that the strikes are over, production of Season 3 is set to begin next month! This is good because there have been rumours swirling around possible cancellation in the wake of Star Trek Discovery being ended after its 5th season. But SNW continues (Lower Decks has also been renewed for Season 5). The only caveat to that is Paramount Plus still cancelled Star Trek Prodigy even with its Season 2 complete, so nothing is a guarantee anymore. (And even then, it's been reported that Prodigy S2 will at least get some sort of Netflix release).
(Further good news is Season 2, with its amazing musical and Lower Decks crossover episodes, is set for Blu-ray release before Christmas.)
The bad news - though this is likely educated speculation on Screen Rant's part - is the possibility that the 10-episode 3rd season my be split, with only 5 episodes airing in 2024 and having to wait till 2025 to see the rest. Aside from that wrecking viewer momentum, those 5 weeks will come and go very quickly. If this news is correct, though, they could be telegraphing some sort of 5-episode story arc, which should be good but I actually prefer SNW's episodic format as it better supports the type of experimentation we got with not only this past year's musical and part-animated episodes, but the episodic format is what made TOS what it was. No official word on any cast changes, though I will be surprised if S3 doesn't reintroduce Dr. McCoy in some fashion.
I haven't written much about SNW but it's my favourite of the live action modern Treks. I stopped watching Discovery and Picard but SNW has kept me. I've had songs from the musical earworming for the last week or so after I rewatched it. And I greatly appreciated the time-travel episode "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow" for finally canonizing an explanation as to why the prequel series haven't always lined up with what we know as canon from TOS, TNG, etc. which as far as I'm concerned frees the writers to deviate and retroactively serves to rectify canon issues dating all the way back to some episodes of DS9, never mind Enterprise, Discovery and SNW itself. I will explain for those who don't know but I will put a spoiler break here for those who might be waiting for the Blu-ray or haven't had a chance to stream season 2 yet. If the break doesn't appear below, stop reading now if you don't want the spoiler.

The episode reveals that due to the many time travel events over the years (including ones we haven't seen on screen by enemies of the Federation; the episode relates one involving Mary Queen of Scots (in-joke for the actress) what we have been seeing in SNW etc. is an alternate timeline. Maybe not as extreme as the Kelvin timeline of the films, but events such as the Eugenics Wars - indeed, the birth of Khan himself - were delayed by decades. This major change to the timeline - and then you fill in the blanks by factoring in even minor changes such as the guy who accidentally killed himself with McCoy's phaser in City on the Edge of Forever, Sisko replacing Gabriel Bell in the Bell Riots, the Voyager crew going back to 1996, Archer and T'Pol heading off agents of the temporal cold war in the early 2000s, etc. - and you can see how it's possible that things progressed differently resulting in SNW and Discovery being more technologically advanced than TOS-era ships should be as established in TNG, DS9 and Enterprise that used the original tech and designs. Also character differences, like Pike's crew being aware of T'Pring and Khan when Kirk's crew in TOS did now despite Spock having worked with La'an Noonien-Singh and Kirk being aware of La'an's feelings for him. Or the lack of reference to Kirk's brother, who dies in a famous TOS episode, having been former Enterprise crew. And it literally stems from two lines of dialogue. It's exhibit A of how quickly and simply a show like Doctor Who can fix things.

Ohh I'm guessing that's why you have this as your url! I haven't watched any TAS yet (nor finished most of the other shows, as I said I only really got started last year so I have a lot to catch up on and right now the only ones I've finished even a full season of (I jump around based on interesting episode plots and I know many spoilers already anyway so I've still watched later eps of most series) are Lower Decks and Prodigy which I've watched in full and wow this bracket got way too long, sorry) but from what I understand it's where Bob April first appeared, right? It must be so cool to have a character you grew up with that you can still love and see new adaptations of! I used to have characters like that actually, until JKR revealed her transphobia 😔 Oh well...
I kinda wanna follow you but I have a rule for new trek blogs I follow and the search didn't turn up any results so I'll ask directly. How do you feel about Neelix?
Yep! The name "Bob April" used to be a trivia question that even most casual Trekkies couldn't identify. That's changed forever now thanks to SNW, but it's been my nom de Internet too long to give up, now.
TAS is worth watching, but only after TOS. The animation, coloring (by a literal color-blind colorist), and especially the music are atrociously bad. But the plots are honest-to-IDIC real Trek stories, by real Trek writers and SF authors, stripped down to bare essentials to fit a 22 minute format. But shrinking them down like that relies on you already knowing the characters pretty well from watching TOS. If you try it and can't get past the flaws, the Alan Dean Foster adaptations are worth checking out. I'm about to finish S4 of a VOY rewatch, so I'm gradually refreshing my memory of Neelix as we speak. I'm not a big Neelix fan. His relationship with Kes was cringe-inducing, both from the age/experience gap and his vicious jealousy. But he does have some good bits scattered here and there, and is showing character growth. Much like Wesley Crusher, the actor is betrayed by the writing, but the character is definitely filling a needed role, even now that he's well past knowing anything about the territory they're traveling through.

Can I jump right into snw I’ve seen the og series and that’s it. I plan to watch more but maybe later
yep! discovery comes up a teeny tiny bit in the pilot (i guess spock's sister sacrificed herself to save everyone and he's sad about it?) but like i haven't watched discovery and i'm able to follow everything. and snw is like a prequel to tos and delves into characters like chapel and m'benga so it's extra nice if youre familiar with tos :) but honestly i feel like this could be someone's first star trek show and they'd still be able to understand everything pretty much. very beginner friendly!
