Reposting this on tumblr because there’s to many people out there who need to read this who do not exist in my private discord servers but out of the many things I hate about online liberal centrist queer circles but specifically the white feminist sapphic circle of it is the inherent hatred and fear they have of butches. Like every single lesbian and bisexual woman from 1920-2010s is rising from the grave and spitting on your face right now
And the only butches they find acceptable are those in butch4fem relationships for some reason where the butch is expected to act like the heteronormative ideal of a man in the relationship completely ignoring their feeling and emotions. And butch4butch relationships literally do not exist in their eyes. Like, I’m just so tired of butchphobia in the sapphic community.
Anyway, if it wasn’t clear yet, THIS TUMBLR USER LOVES BUTCHES AND THEIR CULTURE ABD EVERYTHING THAT THEYVE DONE FOR THE LESBIAN COMMUNITY AND QUEER CULTURE IN THE WHOLE!!!

you have good horror opinions, so im wondering what your thoughts are(if you have any/would be willing to share) on the I Spit On Your Grave series. i feel like opinion is pretty starkly divided about it, you know?
It's been a year or so since I've seen the 1978 original I Spit On Your Grave. For those unfamiliar, this is one of the better known examples of the "rape revenge" subgenre. As the name implies, the protagonist, usually a woman, is sexually assaulted, followed by her taking violent revenge on the men who attacked her. As anyone also might guess, most of these movies tend to encourage a more prurient interest over a feminist one, and it's generally not a subgenre with a lot of real winners in it, so to speak. Some examples from the subgenre which are genuinely good movies with actual depth and thought are Revenge (2017) and Ms. 45 (1981).
My feelings about the original I Spit On Your Grave are that it's kind of average. It's not particularly distinguished by any standards you could apply, be it as a horror film, a 70s movie, an exploitation film, etc. The scenes of sexual violence feel pretty tame by comparison to almost any modern movie, and the revenge I recall being satisfactorily enacted. In many ways, purely through the chance of it being made cheaply and decades in the past, it's distinctively better quality than many more modern movies which use the same approach today. The lack of expensive and glossy camera work and lack of expensive and glossy actors put an air of unaffected realism across the movie that works in its favor, but which does not feel particularly intentional. It's fine to watch as a historic artifact, but it's not something I go out of my way to extol the virtues of, unlike say The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Basically I wouldn't argue either side, because I'm not sure I Spit On Your Grave has a level of quality outside the middle of the bell curve,
I will say that 2010 remake of it is just awful. I have no idea how the assault scenes are because everything about it was so stultifying that I gave up. I have no idea what they were trying to do, and I couldn't be bothered to finish. I haven't investigated the series beyond that because the OG doesn't make me feel like I need to see any more, and the remake which somehow has three sequels didn't manage to keep my interest enough to finish. If the 78 version is just average, the 2010 version is purely generic, the negative version of average, the CW network casting call of horror, the khaki pants of revenge films, a footnote on the index of the three paragraph entry you write for the original. I wouldn't argue either side for it, but mostly because I don't think there's enough material to argue about.

i totally get why art that seems "shock for shock-sake" is a turn off for some people. it honestly wasnt until earlier this year, after i remembered some really fucked up shit that happened to me, that i realized why i am so drawn to that kind of thing.
making a work that is shocking to be shocking isnt easy--decent writing, composition, themes, those all still apply. and then, theres the added challenge of writing about topics that are ~controversial~
i think the immediate thing that comes to mind is rape revenge, one of my favorite horror subgenres. one of my favorite rape revenge movies is i spit on your grave, the 2010 remake of the 1978 film. the original is, by todays standards, much more tame. the attack is far less brutal, the murders are less graphic, even the scenery [ connecticut in spring, as opposed to the remakes setting of louisiana in fall ] is much more green and vibrant, and more pleasant to look at in my opinion. i think both of these films have a reputation for being shlock--exploitative, misogynistic, torture-porn. and i dont even think they arent those things [ and the victim being a rich white woman, her attackers impoverished white men. these films are very classist in my opinion ].
rape revenge is a very controversial genre, made even more so by the fact that many of the most well known films are written and directed by men [ i spit on your grave, the original and its remake, same of the last house of the left and its remake, in fact female writers and directors are relatively new to this subgenre ]
if id been asked earlier this year, "what is it about this genre that you find so compelling?" i wouldve struggled to answer. i think the best i couldve come up with is something like, "catharsis." and i do find these films cathartic. they are tense and brutal, and at the end, when the bad guys have died their grotesque deaths, unable to harm anyone anymore, i breathe a sigh of relief. but the truth is, i like that they make people uncomfortable.
to me, these pieces of work existing, even though i havent made any of these works myself, are my own revenge. i want people to watch them, and i do get offended when someone finds them morally wrong. in the evilest parts of my soul i want to force people to watch these devastating, "pointless", "shocking-for-shocks-sake" films and feel even a fraction of what i do. for even a moment, feel as helpless, trapped, terrified, hurt, disoriented, enraged, and humiliated as i do. yes, i want people to be shocked. i want them to be shocked because i want them to feel it. i want their hearts and minds, souls and bodies to be as tainted as mine, even if its just a little bit. i want people to be as traumatized as i am.
i understand this isnt rational. for one thing, i am far from the only rape victim in the world. im not even the only childhood rape victim in the world. im not even the only victim of csam/sex trafficking victim in the world. im not the only person whos family had a "weird uncle", that everyone, even his victims, refused to acknowledge what he was. im not the only victim of sexual harassment and stalking. im just one of perhaps millions, a victim of all of those things. there are perhaps thousands of people with a history nearly identical to mine. but i dont care. i want them to hurt too.
art is supposed to make you feel something. its often said that art is a conversation between you and the artist. how do you feel when the artist wants to abuse you? how do you feel when the artist, knowing nothing of your own history, shows you the ugliest, most rancid, most infected parts of themselves, and they ask you to look?
look at me. look at what i am missing. look at how i am mangled. look at how i am ugly. i am not a palatable victim. i wasnt saved from abuse. the fbi never broke in while i was being photographed or molested and saved me from my fate. the worst happened. and it happened again, and again, and again and no one noticed, and no one saved me. i didnt even save myself. i didnt move away from it all, abandon everyone id ever known, and change my identity like i desperately wanted when i was a teenager. im broke, and i still live within a 1 mile radius of where all the worst things in my life happened to me. i live just 2 blocks away from where i was trafficked and used to make csam. i live just 2 houses down from where i was groomed and repeatedly raped by my best friends dad. im not there anymore, in the sense that years have passed, and i am an adult now. but i still live here, still see his house every day, still see the tree in front of the house where i was nearly drowned to keep me quiet and afraid.
yeah, i want the art i make to shock you. i dont think i have anything else to say.
#csa tw#csam mention tw#honestly dont know what else to tag this so sorry i guess lol. only tagging those things to be courteous i dont usually tag triggers anymor

THE VIRGIN SPRING (1960)
This takes place in old-timey Sweden. There are still pagans! So we’re talking early medieval. Tore (Max von Sydow) and his wife Mareta are minor lords with a little homestead and a few servants, including Ingeri, who is a pagan and also pregnant. Their daughter is Karin, a vivacious and flirtatious young woman. Karin is sent to deliver some candles to the nearby church, and she demands to wear her finest clothes. She takes Ingeri with her.
There is drama between the two women. Karin danced with Ingeri’s baby-daddy the night before, and there’s some other stuff too. They cross a little stream by an old water mill and enter a forest, but Ingeri freaks out and refuses to continue. She stays with the old guy running the water mill. He seems to be Odin! He molests Ingeri and she runs after Karin.
Karin, meanwhile, has been spotted by a trio of brothers (two adult and one boy) who are tending to their goats. They entice Karin into eating a meal with them. She is naturally friendly and funny, sharing all of her food and drink with them, but she eventually realizes that she is in danger. Karin tries to escape but the two older brothers catch her and sexually assault her. Afterwards, Karin stands up and walks away, but one of the brothers bashes her on the head with a branch and she dies. They strip off her fancy clothes and run away. Ingeri caught up and watched the entire scene. She continues to watch as the youngest brother tries to eat some more food, but he retches. He tosses some dirt on Karin and runs after his brothers.
We cut back to Tore and Mareta’s homestead, where the three brothers are asking to spend the night to avoid the cold! Tore lets the men stay in the great hall, and everyone shares an awkward meal. The youngest brother can’t eat anything without spitting it up. Everyone goes to bed. Tore and Mareta are freaking out because Karin hasn’t come home yet. Mareta goes to check on the youngest brother, and the older one offers to sell her Karin’s dress, which is naturally recognizes! She takes the dress to Tore, who takes out his sword.
Tore is heading to the great hall when he finds Ingeri, who has returned and is trying to hide. She confirms that the men killed Karin, and she confesses that she feels guilty because while she was watching she willed it to happen. She helps Tore prepare for the upcoming vengeance. Tore and Mareta quietly enter the great hall. Tore goes through the brothers’ bags and finds the rest of Karin’s clothes. He sits and waits for the morning.
A rooster crows and he wakes up the brothers. The brothers try to fight back, but he stabs one of them, and he holds the other down atop the fire. Mareta tries to protect the youngest brother, but Tore grabs him and throws him against the wall and kills him, too. The entire household then leaves to find Karin’s body. Ingeri leads them to it. Tore says that he doesn’t understand god, but he still asks for forgiveness. He vows to build a church on the very spot where Karin died. He and Mareta pick up the body, and water begins to spring from where the head rested. Everyone is amazed.
Is this really a horror movie? Probably not, it’s mostly drama, a tale about righteous parental vengeance, but it uses elements of horror to tell the story. (The story is also based on a very old folk tale, so it might also be folk horror.) The acting is superb, and the tension builds ominously when the brothers arrive at Tore and Mareta’s home. The extended, Christian, ending is a tone shift, but the original source is literally about the building of a particular little church, so I guess it was unavoidable. Numerous later movies are either a direct homage to this (“The Last House on the Left” (1972) and “The Last House on the Left” (2009)) or follow in the same trope of revenge (ex. “I Spit on Your Grave” (1978) and “I Spit on Your Grave” (2010)). This is a great movie, a meditation on the transition between different belief systems. Tore goes pagan on his daughter’s killers, but I’ll note that his more devout Christian wife didn’t raise a peep when her husband killed the men.

Hey thanks for the ask!! (from this post: send me a 🔥 for an unpopular opinion) So sorry I got caught up with some stuff and couldn't answer sooner!!
Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or not, but I think it surprises a lot of people who don't typically watch horror when I bring it up. *disclaimer: I love horror, and I love the Saw franchise. This is not me being upset or mean about the franchise. This is just my opinion about it as it compares to other movies in the same genre. Anyone and everyone is welcome to disagree and move along if they don't like what I think🥰💜*
The Saw franchise is tame for a horror series. Yes, it has a lot of gore and bloodshed, but it is nowhere near the goriest or most shocking of horror movies (and no, I'm not talking about snuff films. I mean legitimate horror films, not that crap). The premise of the franchise is definitely terrifying to think about, but after it's been done over and over for (currently) 10 movies, it's not really the idea of being trapped that is getting the audience anymore. At this point, I feel the series relies a lot on shock factor, which is why some of the more recent traps have become so violent, complicated, and inescapable. Yet, even with cranking the violence and the gore, it still doesn't reach the levels of Terrifier, in my opinion. If I had a gore/torture scale, I'd say Saw ranks around the same level as Vile (2011); a bit above I Spit on Your Grave (2010). And that's just fine. I like Saw the way it is, and I don't think it needs to change.
Hope you found this answer enjoyable :) Take care!!
