I keep thinking about this mobile game, Sandship: Crafting Factory, which was fun for half an hour and then turned into a complete slog that they wanted me to pay money to get through, or just play by checking in every two hours or so, but in both cases, fuck that.

But the pitch is so good. You have a sandship with a factory on its back, and you have to use the factory to service orders and upgrade the sandship. It's a combination of two things I really like: Factorio and walking cities.

I keep thinking about what a version of this game that wasn't crippled by mobile game monetization would look like. I almost think that you could mod in Factorio itself to get something like that, if you had a Spidertron combined with Factorissimo (which allows for buildings that are bigger on the inside than the outside and can be nested and moved) or Warptorio (where you have an extradimensional base that moves from world to world).

So you move from place to place, feeding enormous quantities of ore and oil into different internal buffers, which then feed into the factory floor at whatever trickle your smelters, assemblers, etc. can actually handle. Intermediates and finished materials get sent to yet more buffers, then used to improve the factory processes, build weapons for the outside of the mobile base, or improve the mobile base itself, offering more space to work with, better transfers, etc.

So far as I can tell in the brief time I played it, Sandship just has matter makers that can create ores from nothing, and the sandship itself requires nothing to run, which ... what the fuck? Why? Obviously some game design directives that are orthogonal to my ideas of fun, but you're going to make a game about a walking factory and then not actually require me to do anything about securing inputs? I would readily accept getting a trickle of resources from somewhere, enough that you can't softlock. But needing to go to specific places (even if it's just node traversal like Slay the Spire) makes the game so much richer, not only because there are questions of target priorities (do I need copper or iron, will I be able to cross close to that lake to top up on water) but because it can change build priorities (okay, I will need to use the travel time to build up a bunch of pumps to extract all that oil).

I also like the idea that the sandship cannot last forever, and part of what it needs is regular replacement parts and maintenance to keep going. Obviously I don't want to get softlocked, but getting crippled because I stopped making struts introduces an element of risk that I think I would enjoy: a conservative factory-ship would have some portion of the floorspace devoted simply to ensuring that the factory keeps going, but at critical points or in order to speed ahead, you might rely on buffers and/or luck to push the factory to its limits and research the next technology or get all the parts for the next upgrade.

Factorio Space Age is going to have spaceships. You set a route for them and they harvest things from the asteroids you pass by, which get turned into fuel, power, and materials. I think this will be cool, but it doesn't hook me like the idea of a giant rolling factory roaming the world does.

I guess I'm going to have to look into how hard is to make a mod for Factorio, but my guess is that the biggest hurdle for me will be game design that's actually compelling and making something that will inevitably not match the picture I have of it in my head.

(Note: Book 3 of Thresholder contains walking factory cities, and yeah, I would also play that game.)

(Note 2: There's also the game Wandering Village, which is up my alley, but which in practice I was kind of meh on. I'm going to give it a fair shake once it's out of early access, but my initial impression was kind of "this is it"?)

I think this is a cool idea if you're a) American and b) can get to a post office, lol.

The thing is, I can't do anything that would involve me fulfilling orders from my house.

Firstly, there's simply too many books to cover (Game Theory would have to be broken down into 4 volumes, with the possibility of a 2-part release later on). I don't want to run complicated and stressful Kickstarter campaigns every 6 months forever. (Not to mention, frankly, that most Kickstarter campaigns fail to earn the amount they need, and I'm still figuring out how to make minimum wage via Patreon).

I do not have the spoons to think about dealing with the shipment costs (let alone the fact that I can't drive or catch public transport and therefore get to post offices) of extremely heavy, chunky books. But what I do know is that a lot of readers will be extremely put off by shipping costs easily in excess of $50-100 alone - not including the books or the tax on the books. Australia has one of the highest tax rates for books in the world, we have some of the must punitive shipping charges (some of your favourite Australian artists use drop shippers and this is why), etc. I used to ship small original pieces of art internationally, about half the size of a piece of paper, and extremely light-weight, and the *starting price* for shipping was around $30 USD. For heaver books it shoots up immediately.

For this reason, I actually have zero confidence in how this is actually going to work out without using a drop-shipper and distributor like IngramSpark. Mosk Kickstarters don't fulfill out of Australia wherever possible. And I have no intention of paying thousands of dollars to put books in my tiny cottage, only to realise I've shafted myself and all my international readers (which is...nearly all of you) by forcing everyone to pay an extra 10% GST on the book itself along with the extortionate postage prices for what will be, honestly, heavy books (postage is calculated by weight). Not to mention that I then can't get to a post office, and am completely dependent on other people to help me with that! And then on top of that, I don't believe many books will actually sell, so I'd prefer to use third party vendors wherever possible so I can be not miserable about it. When people can always read the ebooks for free, the only folks who are going to dish out money for paperbacks/hardbacks are going to be the really hardcore fans (I do not have a ton of these, though I love every one of them), or folks who hate ebooks.

Even if I had money at my disposal, I could never use a system like this (Kickstarter / paying for the mass printing of books), and almost no Australian author would, tbh.

On the other hand, aside from the book cover fees, I could technically list a book today on IngramSpark and my only fee would be the ISBNs.

And that's way less stressful than a Kickstarter. ;) And if I get booted for my content, that's just gonna be how it is. It possibly leaves Lulu as an option, but I'd prefer not to go that route mostly because it dumps more of the cost on you folks, and it also eats more profit margins for me.

The biggest issue is and has always been tbh the editing and the fact that chunks of Game Theory need to either be completely rewritten, or removed (the spanking chapter is incredibly OOC), and working out the covers because if the story has to be broken into multiple volumes, continuity in design is vital.

Ok. So.

In 2 days, i will be let go. They (the organization i work for) don’t have the money to keep paying me, and that’s when my contract ends. They’ve been happy with the work I’ve done and the speed at which I’ve done it.

A couple weeks ago, we shipped the bulk of the archive to our international center/archive in Europe. They’re an NGO, and frankly, they no longer have the resources in the US that they did a couple decades ago. My boss is over 70 and wants to retire, and this has basically been a small satellite office. My boss and I are full-time, and there's another very part-time employee. All this is pretty straightforward and has been in the works for years.

I've been working here over two years, but only full-time for a little over a year. And hoo boy. Things that were not a big deal or that made sense when I was there a day or two per week became real issues when I was there daily. One example: lunch. Again, when you're only there once or twice a week, the expectation of eating lunch together makes sense. But every day? Absolutely not. And yet, that's been the expectation. My boss...what read as curiosity and friendliness once a week translates into outright invasiveness and deeply controlling tendencies when it's daily.

I'm going to try to focus on what's been annoying to me most recently and not tell everything--close friends have heard much more about the nonsense, but it's a LOT, and even this rant is going to be long. It boils down to this: my boss deeply needs to go to therapy, but she won't and she'll make it everyone else's problem. She routinely asks invasive (and on one occasion, illegal) questions. Like I'm talking not even my best friend and I exchange that kind of information. For a while earlier this year, she was commenting on my clothing or appearance nearly daily (usually asking if something was new, and as she's very intense about buying most things secondhand it does not read as a compliment). I ended up severely limiting what I wear to work, trying to make it as boring and repetitive as possible. This blows, because over the last few years, I've had a great time finding where my personal style meets comfort, and I enjoy experimenting. She still finds new things, somehow. Anyway.

Attempts to place and enforce boundaries haven't been successful long-term. If I tell her that something makes me uncomfortable or anxious, she'll tell me either "that's not how I feel about it" (eye roll) or "I can see where you're coming from." And then within days, she'll start doing that thing again, possibly more. (Example: I really don't want to be asked about my commute every day. I take public transportation, and it's often meh, sometimes really shitty, and occasionally, transcendentally awesome. The thing is, because it often skews negative, dwelling on it just makes me feel negative. There's nothing I can do about changing this entire system, and I'm generally pretty good at putting it behind me when I get off the train/bus. I will tell someone if something cool or very bad happens, but by and large I don't want to dwell on it. I have told her this repeatedly. She says okay...and then goes back to asking me every fucking day how it was that morning and the previous evening.) One time when I tried to curb her invasive tendencies by simply not sharing information, she whipped herself into a frenzy and ended up accusing me of time theft because I didn't tell her where I'd gone during an hour I took off but made up. The funny thing is, I had been Going Through It, so I'd actually taken rideshares most of the days she accused me of it, so I had literal receipts to prove her wrong.

One of the most distressing developments over the last few months has been that she keeps trying to get me to do things that are by no means covered by my job description or that I have authorization to do. This ranges from cleaning the bathrooms (weird but okay, and I did eventually get across to her that this was unheard of...when advocating for our new temp employee). When my previous coworker quit, she asked me to be there/help with the exit interview. She's started saying, "oh, we need to do x"...and then will end up staring at me and wringing her hands until she gets me to do the thing or flat out asks me to. I ended up doing the bulk of the interview for the temp employee and making the hiring decision. I've ended up figuring out (and doing) a lot of the packaging of our recycling. I ended up being the one handling the movers and coordinating lists on the day of the move, and she utterly fucked up the bits she did (which was about 15% of what temp guy and I each did).

Things calmed down a bit after the move, but as she's realized she needs to deal with the administrative items that needed to remain in the country before the end of November, she's gotten unbearable again. Especially since, again, Thursday is my last day. After I finished updating some finding aids and writing a reflection essay (heavily edited so as to be neutral, I'm not trying to burn bridges), I didn't have that much to do. Mearcats, you might ask, what about the administrative records staying in the country? Well, you see, I have been asking for a retention policy or guidelines since at least January of this year. I kept getting the brush off of "oh, I'll get on that" or "I'll handle it, you don't need to worry". Then, at the end of last week, she asked me to work on the retention policy...which had died in the water earlier this year and was a complete mess. There was an earlier one from 2009, but it was pretty outdated and involved states that no longer were relevant. I said sure, because you REALLY need at least an unofficial one to deal with administrative records. The thing is, most of the information in a retention policy is informed by law and accounting policies. I am neither a lawyer nor an accountant, and I tried to make this clear. I figured I would find a template and essentially work on organizing the information given us by the lawyer, and I can definitely do the organizing bit well.

Friends, it has not been that. She is looking for answers. No matter how much I tell her I'm unqualified (literally. legally.), she keeps expecting me to know it? Even though she's the one who communicates with the superiors and has isolated me pretty well from direct communication with them? I told her after I turned in a draft of this that I wouldn't be comfortable proceeding with disposing of any admin files until she looked it over and was able to at least partially reconcile some of the issues in this draft I came up with. While she was doing that, she asked me to look at a few of the boxes, because we didn't know quite as well what was in them beyond "administrative". I did so, making a spreadsheet with the contents (usually the folder title, which was nice) and the dates. She still hadn't gotten a response back to me on the retention policy draft this morning, and she asked what I was working on. I showed her the spreadsheet, and she dead-ass said "I didn't ask you to do that, why are you wasting your time with it?" Like?? Do you expect me to just remember the contents of 3 boxes? I'm not going to discard documents before I have at least the okay to do so? Anyway, she came around on that, but jesus christ. And she keeps asking me things and not reaching out to people with answers (like, say, a lawyer or accountant) but then questioning the things I do have really well documented. It's so tense, I shouldn't be doing this, and UGH. It deeply sucks that I'm almost excited for unemployment, just because it means she won't be a horrible fixture in my life anymore.

And they see it too they have to go after one of these actual class A ships and to attach the stone and make it interstellar. We also have companies to lay them off from and there are several of them that were laying them out from today huge companies and yeah this town is full of nutcases they don't seem to care.

Once we own the facilities we're going to pay our son and take the money from these people who are assholes make sure they know it. Pay attention, please. Do you know what DEF fluid is? It's Diesel Exhaust Fluid. Every Diesel truck that has been made since 2010 is required to use it. It's a product made of 67% Urea fertilizer and 33% distilled water. Every diesel truck you see driving down the road today has to have this product to drive. The engines won't start without it. There are regulators inside the engine that mix DEF with the Diesel to reduce Diesel emissions. That's the purpose of DEF.

Right now, Russia is the largest exporter of Urea by a wide margin. Qatar is second. Egypt and China are Tied for 3rd. Both Russia and China have decided to no longer export Urea. On top of that, India is the largest manufacturer of Urea in the world even though they consume most of what they make. What little they would export..........they no longer do. They are now stopping the exportation of any and all Urea minus a deal they just cut with Sri Lanka.

What does this mean for you and me? Well, first, the United States imports most of it's Urea fertilizer. We are the third largest importer in the entire world. We depend on other countries to eat, drive and ship our products.

Secondly... Flying J is the largest Service provider for Truckers around the Unites States. I'm sure you've seen their massive gas stations when traveling around the country. Flying J gets 70% of their DEF fluid from shipments via Union Pacific railroad. UP has single user access to the Fertilizer plants that Urea/DEF fluid comes from. No other rail provider has access to these distribution points. This means Flying J can't just go around Union Pacific. Union Pacific is in charge....for a reason I'm gonna mention in a few paragraphs.

Flying J provides 30% of all DEF consumed in the United States. UP has told Flying J to reduce their shipments by a whopping 50%. And if they do not comply then they will be completely embargoed. That would in effect bankrupt FJ. This means that 15% of all DEF consumed by truckers in the US is no longer available at the largest travel service center for the entire trucking industry.

Rome rotted from the inside out. It was easily invaded because it was occupied with internal problems. It appears we have discovered the Trigger. DEF fluid. If this holds up, DEF shortages will be the catalyst that causes food shortages in the coming months. Not only is there a shortage of fertilizer to grow crops in drought-stricken states (See Kansas' drop in wheat production for 2022)....but....now it looks like, unless the Federal Government intervenes via the Defense Production Act, ...which I am no longer confident they will....there is gonna be an absolute massive shortage of trucking in the coming months.

There simply isn't going to be DEF fluid sufficient to keep the engines running and moving. Home Depot is now limiting the amount of DEF you can buy in their stores.

I would think long and hard about the decisions you are making right now. Where you live. What you spend money on. How you prepare. This is so real that the CEO of Flying J, Shameek Konar was summoned to a Surface Transportation Board hearing to give them all this info.

From what I'm reading....Blackrock is the majority shareholder of Union Pacific railroad. How is that important? Americas biggest fertilizer producer is CF Industries. Their largest shareholder is Blackrock. Blackrock controls the fertilizer industry in the U.S.. Union Pacific has exclusive rights to distribution points of fertilizer. Urea is fertilizer. Flying J needs Urea/DEF. Blackrock is controlling everything.

Tom Donilon’s wife, Catherine Russell, is the White House Personnel Director. It appears Blackrock is spearheading the dismantling of the US system on behalf of the Globalists. And the first domino they are pushing over is the energy sector.
