Listening to Ethel Cain while revisiting wattpad. It makes sense how in my library omegaverse fanfiction about the U.S. states is right next to the Bible. Only in my library. Or maybe in some other Ethel Cain brain rotted freak out there's library. But the weirdest thing is I didn't know about Ethel Cain when I put the omegaverse fanfiction about California and Texas right next to the Bible in my library. It's weird how everything in your life lines up at some point. Makes you think maybe there is someone watching and making a little plan. But then again I'm a disgusting heathen and if God is out there he would never come near me. Or maybe he will. Probably not. If he's avoiding me he must be avoiding a lot of other people. I wonder how many people God has abandoned. Is that blasphemous? Probably. I'm not stranger to blasphemy though. He's probably used to it. Probably just closes his ears and eyes to me now. I wonder if anything I do surprises him at this point. But this is all pointless because I don't believe in the abrahamic God. Everything is just confusing and hurts in ways I don't know really know how to describe. It's 4 am right now and I'm so tired. Which ties in to what this post was originally about. I really lost the plot in this one. But it's not just Wattpad this feeling reminds me of. It's a specific fic on here. I'm not willing to discuss any names or details or anything about it but I'll revisit it every once in a while and check on the rotting man. He's still alive though it's weird. He never dies. He's rotting though like a zombie. Is a zombie dead? I've always wondered that. They're always described as "undead." What does that mean exactly? Alive? Well that can't be right. They're rotting. They've died already. Isn't that the whole point? Reanimated corpses? But I'm basing a lot of my opinions about zombies based off of twd, not really the show so much as the game. It's not like I don't like the show, but the game just hits a different spot inside me. Closer to the rotting man than Ethel Cain if I'm being honest. But those are inching closer. I'm doing my 8th run through in twd and I keep telling myself I'm going to play it differently this time but I never do. I just jump to violence automatically all the time. But I didn't this time with Kenny in the train. I didn't know that peace was an option. I thought the only way to get through to him was to fight him but I guess you really could just talk it through. I always thought that talking with him when he was in that state was a means to an end. It's kinda like when I was playing my 1st run through of the 2nd season. My brother was on the couch I was on the floor and I was able to save Rebecca's husband (I forgot his name). But my brother said he didn't know that was an option. I guess people just go with what they think is the best possible outcome is in the moment and there's no other way it could've been for them. As a note, I saw a post a few days ago about how both adult and child media literacy is decreasing in the U.S., and I can't help but wonder if it's because it's easier to control people who don't know how to read between the lines or interpret things on their own.

And I think to how I grew up in a church and got kicked out of children's church because my dad had already taught me how to interpret the Bible and I apparently asked too many questions.

So, yeah, I think it's purposeful to some extent. The consequences heavily outweigh any control benefits, I think, because reading comprehension is so much more than just looking at the words and context and coming up with defensible meanings to it.

It's learning how to take any new information and interpret it based on other available details. It's science in linguistics — coming up with a hypothesis, testing it, and checking the conclusion. With literature, the conclusion can be more vague (hence interpretations of varying quality), but we also use it for, of course, science, history, and even math. And if we don't continually teach people to not just look at information but to also look beyond the letters and numbers and prescribe defensible meaning to it, we get people who know how to do a job, but don't know how to correct an issue on their own based on the information in front of them.

For example, I was an English major in a Biology class full of nurses in training.

I heard their commentary throughout the class, from their lack of understanding of certain words to the inability to understand statistical variation and what informs those statistics. And no, I don't blame them.

I blame an education system that didn't prepare them to think thoroughly. To think beyond what they're told or what they're familiar with. To think beyond what someone puts in front of them.

Sure makes it easy to succumb to propaganda (everyone can, but lacking media literacy makes it easier), but also makes it more difficult if you want a quality medical professional, since they can't understand the pain you're expressing because it's not something they've personally experienced or something they've seen in the books, for example.

Lady Justice has always been such an interesting figure in my opinion especially because she gets misused and misunderstood by so many because she a younger goddess with not many attestations in mythology. The fact that she is, unlike other gods, goddesses and deities, entirely made up through symbolisms by C. Augustus, a man obsesses with justice, makes her existence in mythology so much more intriguing and the whole of "I dont understand why she is blind(folded)" discussed in the drama very important. Far too little shows actually question it or have her figure this prominent depicted in them.

Another interesting thing is how Michael (even when we only saw a statue of him in the club, but I personally think he fits KMC pretty well thats why imo he shouldnt be written aside as just a simple statue in th background) and Justitia hold both importance to justice, mercy and balance. In some iconographies, Michael even holds a scale (scale of Hesed) in the same hand Justitia does (same with the sword). Both are also depicted with a neutral expression on their faces and seen as something "higher" (Like you said about Michael in one of youre older posts)

In general, for someone like me who grew up with various kinds of mythologies/religions, its really interesting to see how important it seems to be in TKV. Of course, there are other dramas which also draw from mythology/religion but most of them are horror. So far TKV is the only crime drama which uses these symbols EVERYWHERE.

But wow?? I completely forgot the existence of the "Shield" mentioned. I really didnt notice how crazy similar this is 👀

Is justice really blind?

In the drama we have been introduced to the "Lady Justice" several times by now and she in fact takes a very important role in it, even if only in the background.

And throughout the drama, there are a handful of scenes where the characters question "why is she blind(folded)" and we also see pictures of her in KSJ book which depicts her blind version. We can see this very clear by one of the last scenes in ep.8 where KMC picks up the book from his table and flicks through the pages followed by a flashback of KSJ saying "This always bothered me. Lady Justic wears a blindfold because she's afraid of bias in decisions"

But is this really historically and mythologically accurate? Was "Lady Justic" (who btw goes by so many more names) really blindfolded? And if so why?

First of all, lets adress the Lady Justice' depicted in KSJ book. On of them- the one circled- is a statue of her located in the Old Town of Frankfurt am Main, Hessen, Germany. Below, there is a better photo of her exact location.

The Justitia statue fountain is a fountain called the "Gerechrigkeitsbrunnen" sculpted by Friedrich Schierholz in 1887. Its a replica of a fountain sculpted in 1611 (which again, was also a replica of a fontain built in 1543). The 4 virtues depicted below Justitia are:

Iustitia (Justice)- with sword of judgment and balance.

Temperantia (Control)- Moderation, distributing a liquid between two pitchers.

Spes (Hope) with a dove on her arm.

Charitas (Charity) with two children, one of whom she is breastfeeding.

Why is the exact location or more date when she was built important to the question of "Is she really blind(folded)?"

Because, when the fountain was build, only then the whole myth of "Justice being blind" started.

It actually dates back to the mid 15th century where it first started as her being one eyed, then suddenly she was blindfolded. And the first known representation of her being blind is Hans Gieng's statue on the Gerechtigkeitsbrunnen in Bern, Switzerland built in 1543.

There exist several renditions of her and they all changed over time. One source tells about a mortuary temple in egypt, honoring Pharao Ramses the Great. And it is said that in this temple there is a scene depicting judgment wher the associate judges had no hands and the presiding judge had closed his eyes. And from this, another depiction of Lady Justice developed in the middle ages: Justice, depicted as a woman, blindfolded and without hands. The sources then say "she has her right eye closed so that she doesn't recognize neither friends or rich people. And she has her left eye closed so that she doesn't recognize the poor and enemies (of the judge). With it, she doesn't judge by personal bias. And she doesn't have any hands either so she cannot accept bribes."

Which means, two versions - Justitia without hands and blindfolded, and Justitia with hands and blindfolded- coexisted then at the time.

In the late middle ages, both depictions started to merge. But this bears the question: If no hands, how can she hold the scale and the sword? In one of the older depictions of the "Combined Justitia" in the Lawbook of the City Eisenach, Thuringia, Germany- there she is with only one arm, holding the sword, while the scale is placed on the stump of her arm. At the same time, one of her eye is covered while the other isnt.

This later resulted in Lady Justice being blindfolded on both eyes.

But why was Justitia suddenly blindfolded? There is no exact answer to this question, only theories. One says "it seems to have been added to indicate the tolerance, or ignorance to, abuse of the law by the judicial system."

But how did roman/greek Justitia originally look like? What are her general origins?

"Lady Justice" was originall not blindfolded (and also not blind), and because of her "maidenly form" is supposed to guarantee her impartiality which renders the blindfold completely redunant.

In original iconographies of the ancient roman times Justitia was never blindfoded. She only held a sword and as scale, wore something akin to a crown and her Toga (more on these things down below)

Her origins date back to the ancient roman time (or greek, if we follow her greek counterpart Dike) and roman mythology where she was introduced by the emperor (Caesar) Augustus- and thus not a very old deity of the roman pantheon.

Justice was one of the virtues celebrated by Augustus in his "Clipeus Virtuis" (lat.: Shield of Bravery)- a temple of Iustitia was then established by in Rome by emperor Tiberius on January the 8th, 13 BC.

In roman mythology she only plays a role in one part which is the myth of the "Golden age" (based on the greek myth by Hesiod in his poem "Works and Days"). Here Justitia, identifying as Astraea, is the last of the celestials, leaving a "crime-filled earth" of the iron age to return to her supernatural homeland. Other sources say, she gets transported to the sky as the constellation of the Virgin.

She finds mention in the greek term "Dikaiosyne"- There she is counted by some priests as the one of the cardinal virtues.

What does the scale, sword, crown, toga and blindfold represent?

The scale: represent weighing facts and evidence to decide a verdict. It also shows her duty to restore balance to society

The sword: represented authority in ancient times, and conveys the idea that justice can be swift and final.

The crown: its represent authority and strength

The toga: a Greco-Roman garment which symbolizes the status of the philosophical attitude that embodies justice.

The blindfold: Is intended to show Justice as blind to the injustice carried on before her, but it has been reinterpreted over time and is now understood to represent impartiality, the ideal that justice should be applied without regard to wealth, power, or other status.

So, how does it relate to the drama?

Its really nice to see a drama actually diving deeper into the meaning of her, especially questioning her role in the whole judicial system and why she looks the way she looks (also, the dramas focus on her in general is really nice- shes basically omnipresent all the time): Just like the drama, she is a rather ambiguous figure. Her appearance changes for who ever looks at her, her symbolism changes for who ever looks at her. For some, she is justice, for some she is nothing more than a chess figure.

(fun fact: i was able to figure out where the fountain is located not by the statue but by the small bit of the rooftops we see in the photo. umm... a german doing what we can do best: recognize german architecture haha)

This is really great additional advice on how to handle your church community and conservative Christianity in general.

How do you, assuming you’ve had to, explain/defend/justify queerness to straight Christians? I come from a predominantly southern baptist area and the most accepting take I get is “I struggle with porn and go to church, so why shouldn’t we allow you to come to?”

This is a very good question. A very big and relevant question. I'm gonna start with providing my empathy and sympathies that you're in such an area where you're dealing with this. It isn't easy being surrounded by conservatism, especially when it's thinly veiled bigotry guised as some crude "acceptance" that manages to still be pretty bigoted. I grew up attending conservative Baptist and Lutheran churches, so I definitely feel where you're coming from.

The silver-lining here is that, if you wanted to, you could potentially offer up help in working towards a more progressive church space, which will open it up for younger and queerer audiences to find safe places with God and community. This is a huge undertaking, however, especially in what I assume is white southern baptism. I'm also going to assume you're not looking to teach people as a hobby, however you should still consider bookmarking any potential resources you may find while browsing the internet; if someone has a question to ask, reading off from these sources could help you without the labor of running from memory.

Personally, I had to leave behind any thought about returning to Baptism following the open-tent revival I tried out. I instead sought out advice and direction from other Queer Christians about what denominations to consider. Quaker and Episcopal we're the biggest suggestions, so if you find nothing binding you down to the specific community you're in right now, finding a more affirmative space is genuinely not a bad way to start. Some Methodist churches are also affirming, I cannot attest to how common they would be further south.

If you are finding yourself attached to your current church community and don't want to leave, find openings to discuss subjects you find adjacent to your own queerness. Be there and be queer; radical existence is very, very important in spaces like this, which are often in existence only because of lacking education. Ask your church if you can put up LGBTQ+ positive information flyers up. Connect with other Queer Christians with goals to make churches more affirming and comfortable, and find solidarity. Solidarity and support is incredibly important when you find yourself in non-affirming spaces. Create allies where you can.

Here is the most difficult advice that I can offer you, that cannot be true 100% of the time, but is good practice if you find it in yourself to do so, especially coupled with droplets of information and radical existence: try not to take their ignorance as a personal insult.

Ignorance is the flower to the fruit of hatred. People who learn what you teach, who realize you're a real person and not a vaguely alien concept only heard of on the news, will come around, and those who are influenced by the first will follow. Hang in their and remember you are absolutely not alone, you are loved, and God made you the way you are on purpose.

As a final note related to that last point; a friend of mine recently told me someone had said "God doesn't make mistakes" as a negative retort against queers. I agree. God doesn't make mistakes. He really did make you queer, unambiguously. Your relationship with your queerness and God are yours alone. Never let the ignorance or fools take that from you.
