Ok so I'm new to Tumblr and i have no idea what I'm doing

My question is that I've been getting a ton of followers but most of them seem to be bots and my question is:

Should i leave them be or block them? If i should block them what would happen if i didn't?

Im asking this bcs of ur post about making ur blog fronter thing as realistic as possible so the creator doesn't accidentally block a random person. I'm sorry for the weird and random question but ye google isn't helping also thanks for reading and answer anytime

hi, welcome! this is a really good question, so don't feel bad for asking!!

generally the protocol with bots is to first report them as spam (i'll show u how in a minute), and then block them. you can leave them alone without anything bad happening as far as i'm aware, i don't have the energy to block them as they arrive so i usually just do it in batches every so often. but they don't usually do anything other than occasionally sending asks, so don't click on any links or videos that anyone sends you! i actually don't know what happens if you just never block them, but probably it would only benefit them without harming you directly (the thing they do is follow real blogs to make themselves look legitimate, it's a whole thing). tldr: report and block them, but if you don't, i doubt you'll be harmed.

the way to report spam differs on mobile and desktop, but not by much. i'll do a mobile tutorial here, but it's a similar method on desktop, so once you know what ur looking for you should be able to find the buttons ^^

so what you wanna do is find the blogs you wanna block in your followers list and tap/click on one.

this is the screen that comes up when you do. click the person icon thingy next to the follow button (no biggie if you accidentally press follow, just proceed with blocking and reporting!! these bots cannot harm you i don’t think, unless you actually click one of their spam links they send.)

then you get this popup. click report FIRST, block SECOND because once you block em you can’t report.

then go report spam. even if there’s suggestive/sexual material on the blog, if they’re clearly a bot, always report spam because the only thing reporting nsfw content does is prevent minors from reporting these blogs!

and then once you’ve reported them, click the person icon again and block them and bam! all good!

also, this is totally fine to ask!! i'm glad that post was helpful, even if all it did was encourage you to ask for more specific stuff!! this sounds kinda dumb but helping people (especially ppl who are new to something i'm more experienced in) makes me happy so don't feel like u need to apologise! <3

@staff i’ve seen previews of the new desktop post editor and here’s why im keeping the superior older version. so, about the new post editor:

its tagging system is in shambles. why can the older editor scroll through tags with arrow keys, but the new one can’t? was this feature implemented before your time so you have no idea how to recreate it??????/ given your lack of answer i am going to assume so

don’t give me that ugly round post button. i think in square-shaped text boxes with slightly rounded corners. elegant. simple. none of that ugly ovals crap get it out of my face rn immediately.

the new paragraph styling icons (NOT text-styling icons!) look worse than before. i get that color coding is “fun” and “interactive” but i genuinely don’t want my image insert icon to be in technicolor. i can understand if you wanted to make the “insert image” the same color as the newfangled IMAGE POST icon from the new post menu, but nobody i know actually memorizes either of those colors so your efforts are wasted.

the new generic tumblr font looks more like you’re sucking up to windows’ piece of garbage OS by stealing their font and foisting it upon your users. this font was genetically engineered in a lab to reduce the braincell count of its readers by an order of magnitude more each time they look at it. it’s like times new roman got neutered and then birthed a bastard with arial. discosting

text-styling icons got changed enough that i don’t even recognize them anymore. who is this man? why is he in my house where the italic should be???? the italians are probably crying. for shame.

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK CLARI!!!!! i just finished reading the sequel to break my bones and goddamn it was so good!!!! u paced it really wonderfully and i love how the kiss between the mc and dabi was full of so much yearning and lust, but it was still placed appropriately in the timeline if that makes sense. like they’re both still struggling and probs aren’t gonna immediately jump into bed together, so i like how u are taking time to show the cracks in their armor and how they keep being drawn to each other, even when that connection puts them in danger. and that last scene!!!! EEP! u kno i was scared of tomura in the little bonus drabble where he kills the dude in the warehouse, but i was practically trembling bc of him at the very end of this update. like the fact that he knows that the mc is high and that she isn’t lucid and that him being so busy is taking a toll on them but he still jumps to the offense and moves like he’s gonna hurt her is so telling!!! especially compared to the previous scene where dabi and the mc had an argument. and the fact that it’s dabi who stops him despite the fact that he and the mc are moments away from duking it out on a regular basis is just so perfect gah!! the way u develop the relationships between ur characters is so well done. they feel like real people with all their character flaws and mistakes and bad decisions. :) i also am wondering what tomura’s thinking bc the mc’s lips were probs swollen after she and dabi made out and tomura is nothing if not mr observant. i rlly wonder when all of this is gonna climax and how bc you’ve done a really good job of keeping an air of intrigue around these character dynamics. like even if tomura isn’t physically in a scene, his presence is felt in the way that the mc and dabi talk to each other and u balance all aspects of this love triangle so well. i know we all say it a bunch but u r such a good writer. u write emotions and characters so well :) it makes me really happy to see something u worked so hard on be so well done :))) i can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes, as i’m sure u have so many plans and great stuff to show us later. me trying to make a gif part 2 (thrilling finale, buildup ver.)

ok good news and bad news: good news being withheld for Spoilers (not that it’s that hard to guess anyway lol), bad news explained first bc, chronologically, it is first

so yesterday i mentioned in the tags of that post that i had seen that krita has an animation feature so i was gonna try importing the frames into that and then exporting it as a gif. easier said than done, as it turns out

i started by opening the file i made yesterday with 62 layers as the frames and importing that into krita, which worked fine (i didn’t know you could actually open .psd files in clip stuido ((this typo is so fucking stupid it made me laugh so im leaving it)) and krita, so that’s pretty neat, i wonder if it works the other way around too) but i ran into problems when i tried to convert those layers into frames in an animation. because, like, the layout of the program has the layers displayed in one tab, and the animation timeline in another, like so:

so my goal was to get the frames from the layers into the timeline, and i still don’t know if i did it right bc lbr krita is not very intuitive at all,,.,, i mean i watched a video tutorial abt how to animate in krita which was v helpful (it’s the one by jesse j james on yt fuckin SHout out) but it was about animating from scratch, not importing an animation you’ve already done elsewhere

so like, the way krita’s animation thing works, from what i could piece together as i bumbled my way around w/ it, is that each layer in the layers tab is a separate timeline in the,,, timeline tab

i want them all to be in the same timeline, not separate ones, and there’s no way to combine them in the timeline tab bc doing that just overwrites whatever layer you’re pasting it down onto, and also if you define the number of frames for that timeline (62 for this project) it just puts the single image of that layer for all of the frames instead of just one of them, so you’d have to go through and delete all the other frames you don’t want it to be, which would be such a fuckin pain

so i found a workaround, which is so tedious that it can’t be the right way to do it, but basically i started w/ layer 1 and defined 62 frames & then emptied frames 2-62, like this

(that blue box is the frame, btw, even tho it says 0, which actually kind of annoys me like why doesn’t it start the first frame on 1????)

from there i went up to layer two and selected that in the timeline, but for some reason the frame doesn’t show up automatically?

& i couldnt fuckin figure out how to make it into like, an Official Timeline Layer or whatever tf bc like, u see on layer 1 how theres that little lightbulb-looking icon on the right? that’s for turning on onion skin which only applies when you actually have frames with things drawn on them, so basically layer 2 in the layers tab has a drawing but in the timeline it doesn’t?

i didn’t find out what the actual reason for this is or how you’re /supposed/ to make the frame appear in the timeline, but what i did was right click on layer 2′s timeline & select “create blank frame” which magically made the frame i want appear

but it’s on top of the layer 1 frame, and i want it to be the frame after. also it’s still in a different timeline. this is the only easy fix in this whole damn process, u can literally just click & drag the frame from layer 2 to layer 1 and put it wherever u want on the timeline

and then u just delete layer 2 and that’s it, frame transferred!! then i just had to do that for 60 more layers and after [unspecified amount of time but it was a fuckin while ok] my timeline looked like this!

(the gaps near the end are held frames, to save me time so i didn’t have to copy a bunch of frames that were exactly the same)

krita is great because as far as i know ur animation can have an unlimited number of frames, at the risk of your own pc’s processing power, which is a definite upside to SOME expensive art programs i know (clip studio, i’m talking abt csp) and u can pick the frame rate too (cough photoshop elements 5.0 even tho u dont technically have an animation feature & it’s a miracle u can even make gifs at all) so once i finally got all the frames situated all nice and in order like on the same timeline, playing it was great! played at the right speed, looped perfectly, it was a dream come true right

well, time to export it as a gif

so u got 2 options for exporting ur animation, u can either hit “export,” which lets u save it as different file types, one of which being gif, or you can hit “render,” which gives you gif and video options

i tried export first, bc that seemed like a good idea, but the “””gif””” it made was distinctly not a gif, despite its claim to be one?? this is what i got:

notice: 1. it is not moving, and 2. the black bars to the sides?? those are supposed to be transparent. they’re transparent in the file i made so why didn’t they register as transparent in the export, when gifs have transparency capabilities??

so That was some real live bullshit but i still had the “render” option, right? export was wrong, so rrender must be the correct option to go to that will produce the results i am wanting to see produced in front of me like a silver dinner platter with a correctly functioning gif under the lid, that’s what i want to see and “Render Animation...” is gonna Give me that silver platter righWRONG ok look at this shit rn ok Look

so in the end i could find NO correct method of exporting animations as a gif in krita bc every ooption that says gif is fuckign LYING to ur face there are NO gifs in krita, aliens made the progam who looked at gifs and went “hmm i thikng this is how a gif works “ and just made jpegs instead but somehow got on the computers good side and got it to lie for them about it being a gif so thats why it says gif on the file still even tho its not a gif illimati confinr

so what is the conclusion to this? well i said there was good news too, and this is the portion where i divulge that sweet nectar (i type dthis 2 seconds ago and @ me what the fuck)

so after wasting a good 2 hours trying to figure out krita i gave up and watched some good old [youtuber name redacted bc what if it shows up in search & ppl see this dumbass post in there but it rhymes with fjackfsepticfeye] to relax into accepting my fate that i’ll never be able to upload my animations to tungle except in poor quality loopless video form, making me into a laughing stock on my own art blog, but THEN i had a stroke of genius, in my Brain

so if u read yesterday’s post u might remember that flipnote studio, the animation program i use on my ds, to animate, has the option to export files as gifs, both animated and sequential (meaning either as one fully animated gif or each individual frame separately), which is super convenient, but as i mentioned yesterday, any time i tried to open the folder with those files on my laptop, it crashed immediately

WELL today i thought “hey, how about instead of opening the folder in the sd card when it’s plugged in, how about i copy that folder from the sd card to my flash drive, and try to open it there, in case it’s the card’s hardware that’s causing the problem, not corrupted files”

so i tried that and it FUCKING WORKED THANK GOD GLORY HALLELUJAH

so now instead of spedning A THOUSAND YEARS trying and failing to force art programs to bend to my will i can just export the animations straight from my ds and drag them onto my computer Just As God Intended oh GOD im so fucking happy

here’s the gif in the end, i’m gonna post it to my art blog too but this is the Green Version bc i animate in green bc of some default settings in flipnote that i got used to, plus it makes me feel like i’m just sketching so nothing really has to be finalized so i’m comfortable while i work, and also it’s just nice ok it’s a Nice Green

(there’s a few frames at the end that are like the extra scraps from while i was working dw i got rid of those in the final version that i’m posting to my art blog later. also i added my blog url to that one too it’s aaaaaall good)

the only downside to this method is that i can’t change the canvas size to be 540px wide to fit with tumbrl s image dimensions but whatever i can just post them in a text post and fix the html to display it at its original size instead of the resizing bullshit tmurbl pulls constantly ugh. anyway it works great on desktop but it’s inevitably gonna look like shit on mobile no matter what i do *Big Ass Shrug*

I was just wondering if u cld share with me how many notes u had gotten on ur first fic when it was released (u dun hv to if this is too personal) or any tips for new writers on how to get their work out there? tysm

hello! thank you so much for the kind words!!! For my first fic, I had about 40 notes i think…maybe even less than that lol i can’t really remember but I remember being elated when I hit 30 haha. tbh I still am even to this day super happy when I hit 30.

First off, I want to say that tumblr is an odd place. Sometimes super well written fics with great vocab & an amazing plot line & etc etc etc barely get any notes while others that are in my opinion, not so well written with misspelled words, bad grammar and etc etc etc get a ton of notes so I wouldn’t worry about notes that much. Also there are a ton of silent readers. A TON. come on peeps show the fic some love if you liked it! I know when I first started reading I didn’t leave a like either lol bc… idk I just didn’t do it until I saw a post that explained how important feedback is. I mean I feel it even more so now that I write haha. 

ok anyway, i’m going to put the rest of my answer under the break bc it’s pretty long and I don’t wanna clog people’s dash, sorry!

To get your fic out there, you should tag your fics right with #bts fanfic and #bts scenarios (remember the s! i know some ppl drop the s but i always use scenarios instead of scenario but tbh idk if the other tag is tracked more closely) bc people track these tags… I know I used to before I started writing and tbh I still do when I have some spare time and also tag like the member’s name and then the genre. for example, #jimin fluff. apparently only the first 5 tags are searchable but tbh I’m not so sure… so you can just tag to your heart’s content if you like bc idk tumblr is a mystery to me tbh. most networks require you to tag their network in the first 5 tags but more on networks later!

Next, post your fic when you feel like tons of people are online so they see it on their dash or it appears in the ‘recent’ section when they search the tags and stuff. For me, that’s around 11 pm central time in the US or at least that’s what I’ve decided on… tbh i schedule the post at that time bc I’ll go to sleep so I’m not constantly refreshing to check the notes lol. anyway get a counter from freehostedscripts which you can see on my blog on desktop… it’s those little numbers in my description box. It’ll help you see when people check out your blog and stuff. It’ll have a map to show you the general area ppl are visiting from and a lil section underneath that looks like this

then from this I guess I should be posting at 8 pm lol oops but honestly you don’t have to be so detailed haha im just a huge data person.

Third, join a network. You can check my networks page to see what nets I’m in and check other writers’ networks page too. tbh I’m looking for a new network to join too heh. anyway, i was lucky with my first fic bc I saw a lot of writers using the #allkpopnet tag and just followed along lol. luckily for me, the admin at @allkpop-net was super nice and reblogged my work even when I wasn’t in the net and kindly invited me to join the net! I feel like that helped me get my work out there. All members within the net has to follow the account so basically all these writers are following an account that reblogs fics and ya I mean someday maybe a writer with a decent following may read your work and choose to reblog it or rec it which will help get your fic more attention. Also, most nets have a group chat on kakaotalk or smth with the rest of the members so when you join, you can talk to other writers and support one another or bounce off ideas off of each other… so yeah cool stuff. join a network!!! they really help and I feel like that’s what got my fics out there. 

This tip isn’t really about getting your fic out there but more for growing as a writer but yeah hehe. Read. Read a lot. There are so many writers on here, each one with a different writing style and honestly I learn so much from all of them. From vocab to sentence structure to how to make dialogue interesting, there’s 101 things you can learn from reading others’ work. Don’t plagiarise of course bc that’s horrible. What I mean by learning from other people’s writing is to just analyse their writing, internalize the info and see how you can use it to improve your fics.

Lastly and most importantly, remember that you’re writing for yourself and no one else but you. Love the content you write, continue to work hard on your fics and eventually people will notice you. I know it’s hard in the beginning and the lack of feedback or the small amount of notes feels really discouraging but don’t let that get to you. Just think about how one year from now, when you look back at your work you’ll be able to see how much you’ve grown as a writer and truly that is the most rewarding experience. When I had first started out, I was lucky enough for someone to drop by and send me a message telling me that I should continue writing and if it wasn’t for them I probably wouldn’t even be on this blog so, if no one has sent you that message then here it is. Keep writing. Write whatever you want, however you want but the bottom line is keep writing. You are good enough. Don’t let anyone else or the lack of response make you feel differently. Keep doing you peanut! I hope to run into your fic someday and maybe by then you’re a fic writer with a huge following on here!

Nobody knows the Kootenays like Greg Nesteroff.

A celebrated historian and journalist, he first made a name for himself as a columnist and reporter for the Nelson Star, eventually moving up to the editor position. He then became news director of Juice FM, a gig he inherited from veteran broadcaster Glenn Hicks.

Last year Nesteroff decided to take some time off to work on two full-length book projects — one will be a collection of his popular Place Names columns, while the other will be a biography of Sandon founder John Morgan Harris. Meanwhile he started a blog: The Kütne Reader.

Kootenay Goon caught up with Greg to chat about the world of blogging, his obsession with the past and the future of journalism.

#1. For many of the posts on Kütne Reader, a historical document or photograph ends up being the jumping off point for a deep dive into the life of some historical character most have never heard of. (I loved your story about "The Midnight Nurse", by the way.) Your investigative skill-set is honestly staggering — I can't believe you successfully dredge up some of the information you do.

It seems to me like this would be a lengthy process, and I'm curious what your strategy is when building these stories. What are your go-to sources? Are you constantly haunting the archives, or looking this stuff up in books, or some combination of both?

Gee, thanks! My hat will no longer fit. 

I had a stockpile of unpublished stories I was able to drawn on initially. I've exhausted most of them, so now I'm putting up new posts at a slightly slower pace. Although I have no shortage of ideas, it takes longer to assemble each post. You're right about a single photograph, document, or artifact inspiring a post. It doesn't take much to get me interested and headed down a proverbial rabbit hole.

Go-to sources: ancestry.com plus the ever-expanding list of digitized newspapers, particularly the early Kootenay papers available through UBC's BC Historical Newspapers site and the ones on newspapers.com. The recent addition to the latter of The Vancouver Sun was particularly exciting. I visit archives and libraries less often than I used to because so much is available online now. But I spent 20 years taking notes from newspapers and local history books (the room where I write is groaning under the weight of those books), so there is lots I can search even on my own computer desktop.  

Even though an amazing number of books have been written about this region (with more added each year) there is no shortage of subjects left unexplored or under-explored. The digitization of newspapers and books is giving us the tools to explore topics and questions in previously impossible ways. It's fun to be part of the first wave of historians to take advantage of this technology. 

Some of my posts are wholly original; you won't find anything about those subjects in any history book. Others are a matter of presenting existing information in a new way. My post entitled "15 curious things about Peter (Lordly) Verigin's death" contained nothing that hadn't already been published, but it was presented in a novel way. Whereas "A phony dentist in the Slocan Valley" recounted the life of a career criminal which had never been presented in full. 

#2. You took 2018 off to focus on writing your books. Now that 2019's staring us in the face, how much progress have you made?

Alarmingly little. I blame the blog. 

I can throw something up in a hurry without worrying too much about being artful and get instant feedback. Whereas the books are long-term projects that require more care and thought and will not bear fruit for a long time. So the quicker, shorter stuff is much more attractive. It gives me a sense of accomplishment and makes me feel productive in spite of the lack of progress on the books.

I will say that I have reorganized my Johnny Harris biography in a way that should make it more compelling. But I haven't added very much. It still sits at about 43,000 words with a huge amount left to do.

The place name series is more a matter of compiling and condensing than writing, since the basis for it has been a series that has appeared in local newspapers for the last six years. But even then, all I've accomplished so far is a sample chapter for letters P and Q.

Fortunately, my literary agent and wife are both prodding me to get going on the books before my nest egg runs out.

#3. Your other big project has been this blog, and you've been churning out content on the regular. How does it feel to switch mediums, to switch from your home in the pages of the Nelson Star and unleash your work online? Obviously there's no word count limits, which is nice, but what else inspired you to make the jump?

It was probably just a procrastination tool. 

It seemed more fun than what I was actually supposed to be doing. I had no goal initially and didn't give a lot of thought to how it would look or what it would contain. I didn't even really envision anyone reading it. (Which is not unusual, since I've written lots of things for my own amusement and never bothered to share them. Some have since been posted on the blog.) 

Now I do pay more attention to what I'm doing and actively try to increase page views, although I view it purely as a game.

#4. In a number of your historical posts you write about about the First Nations residents of the West Kootenay, including the Sinixt and the Ktunaxa. (Cool postcard of those pictographs, by the way.) This is a subject I don't know much about, and surely I'm not the only one. In your research, what have you learned about their history and how do you feel it informs your understanding of First Nations issues today?

I don't pretend to be an expert on local First Nations. But I am very interested in overlooked stories and overlooked people. 

The First Nations of West Kootenay certainly fall in that category. For generations we experienced a sort of collective amnesia, with descendants of European settlers claiming there never were any First Nations people here, or that they were only transient. That attitude started to shift about 30 years ago, and today you will hear aboriginal acknowledgements at the start of city council meetings, but we still have a long way to go in recognizing local indigenous history. 

Other visible minorities have also been given short shrift in local history, including Chinese Canadians and Japanese Canadians. For many years their stories in this area were not well told, but that has changed in the past few decades, thanks to a few key writers and curators. There is still much untapped ground: for instance, no one has ever written in detail about South Asian pioneers of this region, but I would like to. There were many Indo Canadian sawmill workers in our area, and there is even a West Kootenay connection to the Komagata Maru.

#5. I know you have a special relationship with Sandon, the ghost town just outside New Denver. (For those of you who haven't been, it's worth it just to check out the fleet of historic Vancouver buses randomly parked there.) If memory serves, you've been researching the founder — who was apparently quite the character. What is it about Sandon that initially won your attention?

Sandon has held generations of history buffs in thrall, probably because of its setting and the heights it reached before its lengthy descent into a ghost town. I am no exception. I was taken by it during my first childhood trip. Even though it was hardly an attractive place at that time, it still made a deep impression on me. I recall thinking that I'd somehow like to contribute to the study of local history, but assumed everything there was to know had already been discovered. Well ...

I became particularly interested in John Morgan Harris, the subject of the biography I am writing, when looking into myths about Sandon. There was a story he killed someone before coming to the area. I didn't believe it, but it turned out to be true. I spent a few days in the Wallace, Idaho library reading newspapers about that incident and the rest of his exploits there. 

I've also been to his birthplace and grave in Virginia.

#6. You spend a lot of time living in the past, but you also produce stellar journalism about the present day. Is it hard to switch back and forth, and do you think the two pursuits influence and inform each other?

It's not hard to switch. 

But it is nice to bring a historical perspective to a current news story, to tell your reader how typical or atypical an event is, the last time it happened, or just supply some trivia that enlivens your copy. 

In writing history I use the genealogist's toolkit more than the reporter's. The same resources people use to compile family trees I use to pursue obscure historical figures. Most of the time my subjects are long dead, so I'm not able to interview them or anyone who knew them. But I use ancestry.com and the BC archives vital events index nearly every day in addition to the aforementioned digitized newspaper sites. 

Thank goodness for those pioneer papers. Despite their biases and blind spots (those visible minorities mentioned earlier were routinely condemned when they weren't ignored), without them we would have a much poorer understanding of what went on around here.
