Alice Dyer and Gwen Bouchard. Thoughts?

Not sure if you mean the ship or just the characters in general so I'll answer both

Ship: Eh, take it or leave it, it's not gonna make or break anything for me. Mainly I'm a platonic relationship person over romantic relationship person, it has to have something I really enjoy for me to actively ship them romantically. That being said if them being together gets rid of the love triangle (my greatest enemy forever) between Celia, Sam and Alice I am 100% on board with their relationship.

Alice: She's great fun (very jokey) and yet a buzz kill (trying to stop curiosity killing everyone) at the same time. I've loved many very similar characters so it makes sense I'd like her character. She's super chill and yet cautious and is reasonablly frightened when crazy stuff happens. I love that she just tunes out all the talkers and has fun reading through the stuff she knows is nonsense. Her take on it better to be ignorant then curious is flawed in it's own way (there is no war in Ba Sing Se) but I love that it's the opposite to what every other OIAR employee is doing at the moment. She's also lowkey very suspicious and I always enjoy when someone is up to suspicious activity, her and Celia feel disconnected enough from say Sam and Gwen that they don't feel too much like POV characters and they always seem like they're hiding something even with an open book type of personality. Oh and a great big sister I love seeing how familial relationships are played out especially in a horror. 10/10

Gwen: I wish I liked Gwen more. I love a good bitchy women in a story, but Gwen doesn't hit my criteria in bitchy women. First she's not all that bitchy, like yeah she's a bit rude to people but I think that's the repressed middle class English upbringing, she doesn't take any enjoyment in being bitchy. Also I would make a joke about her hating Mr Bonzo and blackmailing Lena since they are my pookies, but honestly understandable and very girl boss of her to go after that promotion. In the first episode I liked everyone's character and I didn't particularly like her but she fills a crucial role in the story that would feel empty if she wasn't there. She's very wet cat coded right now and I feel bad she's been going through so much horror so soon (no one in the archive was this traumatised after 23 episodes, sorry Martin) she deserves a break. I think she'll have some sort of a redemption in my opinion of her by the time the series ends, but right now she's a character I don't feel really any way towards other than I think her character is important to the direction the story takes, also I'm holding out to see what her relationship with her family is like (especially Elias god please I hope he's her older stoner brother.) 6.5/10

Let's unpack the last interview with the executive producer of Loki. He said it was never their intention to portray some romance between Mobius and Loki and I want to believe them... really. But I remember Eric Martin, the head writer, was very aware of the ship even before the second season was made. Then, he made a weird comparison between lokius and spirk, the mother of all the ships. So, there's no way Martin didn't know people ship Spock and Kirk in a romantic way.

But what is more funny to me is that they also say that Loki and silvye were a thing in this season... Because I don't see it. Sorry. Like , yeah maybe Loki loves her, but we never saw that Sylvie reciprocated his feelings. Like, this fucking writers aren't good at romance. I have to laugh. Even casual viewers noted that they toned down their romance. Then they were good at writing a "platonic" relationship.

And I thought this was because they're men. Like, they don't know how to write a romance (at least consciously). What a woman search in romance (sorry but even if there wasn't incest in the middle of this ship, Sylky still is the most boring ship of all the time). And above that, this season Sylvie was in the background. Like, they didn't know what to do with her. I even though maybe people above them told them to not put much of her on the screen. Like, I remember people hated the first season because it was more about her than the main character, Loki. But people loved Mobius and Loki together (and let's not forget that Kevin Feige told Eric to put Loki and Mobius in the episode 3 when the episode was leaning too much into ravvona and Victor timely).

I think they're good in "platonic" relationships because men only love men. And only want women for sex. Maybe I'm overreacting. But that's why they don't see it. They wrote a love story between Mobius and Loki, but because Mobius is a man, they can't see it.

And finally, I don't care if they aren't canon because guess what... Lokius is still the most popular ship of Loki, here on Tumblr and also in TikTok. That will haunt them forever. 🤭

And when the executive producer mentioned Loki's bisexuality I had to laugh. They don't want to piss the LGBT fans of Loki. Suddenly he remembers Loki's sexual orientation. And of course they didn't do anything with that because they don't care. They're just cishet men. 😮‍💨

Queen Salacia (For those who don't know, in Roman Legends, Salacia was the Goddess of the Sea as well as the Actual Wife of Neptune (her Counterpart was Amphitrite, a Greek Goddess who was Poseidon's Wife). B - I don't have a lot for Ace Attorney because most of its ships are very obvious. I did however discover a fondness for the very rarepair Maya Fey/Simon Blackquill after reading a fic about them. She is a spirit medium who is going to become the leader of her village, and is also obsessed with the TV series The Steel Samurai. He is a raging weeaboo and/or British man with Japanese ancestry who wields a spirit katana and wants to be a samurai. They are even the same age! They are absolutely perfect together!

K - Urgh, see, this is the thing that Ace Attorney is very bad at. The games are good at showing 50-75% of a character development arc and then giving up. Like, AA4 is all about Klavier Gavin receiving trauma after trauma, and you'd expect him to need some time to process everything that's happened to him - yet he pops up in AA5 as if nothing has happened at all. Phoenix Wright and Miles Edgeworth both have development, but even then you don't see the trauma being processed. In fact, the way Phoenix flips back to his old self in AA5 ignores all of the changes that happened to him in AA4, and seems false.

I actually think one of the best development arcs I've ever seen in a game/game series is Martin Septim in TES IV: Oblivion. He goes from being the priest of a town attacked by Daedra (TES version of demons) to the Emperor of Tamriel, willing to give his life to stop the Daedric invasion. Each time you return to Cloud Ruler Temple on the main quest, he's a little more resigned to his fate. He goes from giving an awkward speech to the Blades where he says, "I know you all want me to be Emperor, but this is very new to me" to leading a major battle dressed in the Emperor's heavy armor. When did he learn to fight in heavy armor? Before that, he's only worn priest's robes. A lot is happening to him behind the player's back, and it gives him life.

W - I agree with you about hating soulmates and Hanahaki Disease, unless those tropes are subverted. I am quite fond of the idea of "soulmates" which simply means that the person will be very important to you - not necessarily your one and only partner, but perhaps your best friend forever. And I find it interesting when people write Hanahaki Disease as a chronic illness which affects people who love too easily and deeply. I've often felt that I'm a person who does that, and it's brought me emotional pain. Why not have physical pain to go with it?

The tropes I REALLY hate though are "Pair the Spares" and "Everyone is Gay".

Ace Attorney has a juggernaut F/F ship of FranMaya which is Miles Edgeworth's adoptive/foster sister Franziska Von Karma paired with Phoenix Wright's best friend Maya Fey. But there are plenty of other options for both of those women, both F/F and M/F. I feel they get paired together despite their wildly different personalities and interests simply because Phoenix and Miles do, and I really dislike that. I don't even hate the ship! But I LOATHE the idea that they are together BECAUSE of their brother/best friend's relationship.

When the trope is subverted, and FranMaya get together years before WrightWorth, then I like the ship much more. Though I still feel that both characters have plenty of other interesting ships available to them.

"Everyone is Gay" bothers me when it's literally everyone being GAY as in exclusively same-sex relationships. Especially as three characters are about as close to canon bisexual as it's possible to be! Others have strongly headcanoned sexualities which are part of fanon (e.g. Miles Edgeworth being homoromantic demisexual and Kristoph Gavin being aromantic homosexual). But other characters are more flexible, e.g. I've seen Ema Skye written as lesbian, bi, straight, asexual, aromantic and acearo!

By all means, make everyone queer. But recognise that a trans woman might date a man, that a lot of bisexuals end up in relationships with people of different gender, that heteroromantic asexuals are still queer, and that acearo people likely don't want partners at all. And all of that is okay.

RWBY Shipping

Double Rainbow:  Jaune Arc x Ilia Amitola

Comes from my Firen Lhain story (Harem / No Harem)

Putting Ilia in charge of the White Fang was insanely idiotic.  She had no grasp of morality, and no leadership skills.  But, she’s a really interesting character.  So, I decided to keep her.  Blake purposefully kept her distance to not lead her on.

This left Jaune to be the one to teach, guide, and look out for her.  And it just became so magical.  So magical that I rewrote the whole story to break up the Pollinated Knight (JxRWBY) relationship.

Arkos:  Jaune Arc x Pyrrha Nikos

As one commentator pointed out, everyone loves Arkos, because everyone wants Pyrrha to be happy.  Of the canon romances, this is the only good one.  And truthfully, one of the only canon ones from the current generation.  There’s Arkos, and there’s Bumblebee, and Bumblebee is horrendously abusive.  There is Saphron and Terra, and while their relationship is good, they provide nothing to the story at all.  Their addition to the story could have been replaced by a hotel.

As for the previous generation?  Weiss’ parents are a great example of how not to parent.  Ruby and Yang had one mother who abandoned them, and another that went missing on a save-the-world mission.  Tai basically did everything he could to hold them together, and Qrow was a great cool uncle, which means he’s missing most of the time.  Ghira and Kali are excellent.  Who else has a parent?  Seriously?

Pollinated Knight:  Jaune x Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang

With one caveat, I like all of the involved pairings.

Lancaster:  Jaune Arc x Ruby Rose:  They are either incredible romantic or platonic partners.  They can simply say “Nope” to cheer each other up.

White Knight:  Jaune Arc x Weiss Schnee:  One of the only relationship is the series, even if it’s one-sided.  They also did a fantastic job of showing growth for both of the characters, so when they meet again in Haven they are very different people.

Knightshade:  Jaune Arc x Blake Belladonna:  The more I see of Blake, the more I hate her, but this is largely because she had a lot of character growth she would have to make, and never did that.  Which is where Jaune falls in, as he does go through tremendous growth, and provides moral grounding for the story.

Dragonslayer:  Jaune Arc x Yang Xiao Long:  Yang is the first person to support Jaune, and the only one to do so throughout the entire story.  But she’s also a lot more vulnerable than she lets on.  She needs someone to be strong when she’s weak, and someone to step aside when she’s strong, (and pick up the pieces).

White Rose:  Ruby Rose x Weiss Schnee:  The most adorable pairing in RWBY.  Just remember, Weiss nags because she cares.

Ladybug:  Ruby Rose x Blake Belladonna:  Diabetes, in romance form.

Checkmate:  One of the first pieces of character development in RWBY, (the team, not the story).  Often called the Checkmate Arc. Unfortunately, that’s the extent the pairing went.  But, during this arc, the interplay is fantastic.

Freezerburn:  A song of fire and ice.  Too bad for Grr Martin, it’s too poetic to not use.  The interplay of hot and cold, light and darkness, is one of the most potent feelings for Humans.

Bumblebee:  Blake Belladonna x Yang Xiao Long:  The one caveat.  v1-5 Bumblebee good.  B6+ Bumblebee abusive.  All they had to do was talk. But, I’ll focus on the good parts.  Mystery, and motion, and fire and shadow.

Green Lantern’s Knight:  Jaune Arc x Jessica Cruz

There are two things in RWBY post Haven I actually like, Weiss being thirsty for the Rusted Knight, and the fans pairing Jaune Arc with Jessica Cruz.

Black Sun:  Sun Wukong x Blake Belladonna

When this first happened in V4-5, I enjoyed it.  When it was sunk after Haven, I realized the part I liked most about it was Kali.

Anyone with Cinder

Cinder is a villain.  She’s not a woobie, she’s not sympathetic.  She might be being manipulated, but she is doing everything she can to burn the world down.  She needs to be punished, she needs to be humbled, humiliated.  She needs to repent.  If you don’t, you are supporting an unmitigated psychopath because she’s pretty.  My favourite one to do this is Jaune.

Sweet Dreams: Cinder  Fall x Emerald Sustrai

While Cinder is an unmitigated psychopath, and Emerald is her simp, this is the only good thing from any of the main villains.

Any of the other villains:

Salem:  She can be put in a good relationship with Oz if they reconcile.  And, quite frankly, this is likely the only thing that can actually stop her.  Alternatively, if you are feeling perverted, you could have Jaune use his sword to teach her the value of life and death.

Adam:  Of all of the unmitigated villains, he is the worst of the bunch.  He has zero redeemable, charitable, and sympathetic qualities.  They tried and failed to give him any.  Maybe the should have tried to give him sympathetic qualities before turning him into nothing more than an abusive ex and then killing him.  Just saying.

Hazel:  They tried and failed to give him a woobie backstory.  While he’s not as villainous as the rest, he is still willing to destroy the world because his sister died as a Huntress.

Tyrian Callows:  The most psychotic of the lot.

Arthur Watts:  Of the main villains, he’s the only one to have any real good qualities other than Cinder.  Intelligence and charisma.  Still pretty fucked up.

Mercury Black:  Personally, I find him a pretty boring character, but, of the main villains, he has the least investment, and could most easily leave and redeem himself.  The only reason he stayed is because Cinder was slightly nice to him, (at least compared to his father).

Emerald Sustrai:  She loves Cinder, and is pretty, therefore she doesn’t need to redeem herself.  She just needs to be momentarily sad for all to be forgiven.  They could have given her an arc where she realizes that Cinder won’t care for her and she needs to find her own path, but they did not.

Silent Knight:  Jaune Arc x Neopolitan

Don’t consider her to be one of the main villains, because she’s not.  She’s Roman Torchwick’s sidekick.  Roman Torchwick is a low-level criminal who made it big.  He wasn’t in it for the evil, he was in it to become a big man.  It wasn’t until he succeeded that he realized who trapped he was, and died.

This leaves Neopolitan with zero motivation to stay with the villains.  She does because plot.  She is genuinely hurt, she did help to cause Beacon, but she was not trying to.  She was just trying to do well by her man.  This makes her very easy to repent and work to be a better woman.  Who better to help her than Jaune.  She’s also a perverted bastard, so perfect for adding some spice to a fic.

Robotic Knight:  Jaune Arc x PENNY Polendina

I don’t like anything about PENNY’s resurrection and second death.  But there is a missing P from JNpR’s lineup, and she would be a perfect fit.  They are both so socially awkward that they can make an amazing couple.

Nuts and Dolts:  Ruby Rose x PENNY Polendia

I am relatively neutral about this.  Again, I hate what they did V6+ with PENNY, but it could have been handled a different way, and it would make a nice pairing.  They are lovely together, though none of the early interaction seemed especially romantic.  But there is more than enough for shippers to build off of.

Character I would be best friends with: jon or melanie because i love befriending haters you are all so fun

A random thought: i miss them so much. i kept expecting the transcripts to switch to “archive” for jon at some point but they never did which is probably for the best for accessibility reasons but can you imagine. i miss them so much. basira is funnier than people give her credit for. georgie is less funny than people give her credit for and i appreciate her so much for it (don’t be a Stranger!). i miss them so much

An unpopular opinion: hey did you know basira hussain is in the third most episodes total and actually has the second most scenes with jon (she had The Most, period, before martin dethroned her in s5)? did you know? anyway she should be in more stuff and i love her deeply. i also don’t think she actually had double standards for jon versus daisy per se, i think her problem was thinking that guilty people deserve punishment and therefore that daisy’s victims (criminals) were fine while jon’s victims (random people off the street) were not

— this is also why she stops daisy from killing jon in 091, because she’d met him before, he was a human being who cracked jokes, he *couldn’t* be guilty; rather than because killing people is bad

— i also think she knew deep down she was wrong for this considering how she says in the unknowing: i don’t want to hurt you. i don’t want to hurt anyone. and then in s5: of course i care! …that’s the problem

— she had to force down her compassion in order to function well as a police officer and forced herself to believe that it was the right thing to arrest people who did bad things

— melanie was strong and violent and necessary and basira needed someone strong to rely on after daisy even though she could see how miserable melanie was. basira stuffed down all her emotions and became a stone figure and melanie feeling herself being overtaken by rage both aspired to that and hated her for it. they are anchors for each other but false because their usual anchors (daisy, georgie) aren’t here or wouldn’t get it. do you understand.

Most badass character: the admiral

Pairing I am not a fan of: sorry to jon.elias fans i do understand that exploring the Power Dynamics could be fun but i genuinely cannot see any romance in there whatsoever. can’t jon just hate a man in peace

Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): hmmmmmmm. not anyone in particular? i think basira’s s5 arc was kind of rushed but i’m not super mad about it. also obviously the racist stereotypes in there (the haans. i mean the haans) but in terms of main cast i can’t think of anyone

Favourite friendship: tim & sasha because i haven’t mentioned them anywhere in this ask and that is a travesty. they’re fun i hope they are kayaking happily together somewhere

She used to torment him (/silly) when they were younger. Lisa would find like any excuse to tickle him, her most popular being that he just hadn’t smiled enough that day. Their tickle fights are kinda one sided because John just kinda curls up when she tickles him (which is not effective at all 💀) .

alina is the daughter of kamala maharaj (who was a researcher at m.i.) a british indian woman whos classified as a thrill-seeking genius. i affectionately think of her as the mad scientist type.

& her father is luis alvarez, an latin american paranormal investigator, like a real one, not one that does web shows and all that. he’s puerto rican and able to talk to ghosts. his entire family has some kind of psychic ability.

alina has the ability called psychometry where she can learn things about and item or person through touch.

luis is modeled after my irl mom, who’s puerto rican & a medium.

luis goes to the UK looking for a juergen leitner book (though he doesn’t know that that’s what it’s called) the book is affiliated with the dark; luis has a page from it and is searching for the rest. he meets kamala when he interviews her. they hit it off instantly and get married after less than a year of knowing each other.

when luis and kamala died, alina was raised by her godfather joel reid who made a statement at the magnus institute when alina went missing.

joel reid was in the relationship with kamala and luis, he was childhood friends with kamala stating that he was probably the only one who could put up with her eccentric personality until luis came along, though luis’ personality wasn’t much better.

he owned a bar and often let alina, jon, and georgie hang out there during their free time.

joel later becomes affiliated with the hunt.

alina and jon meet in college at oxford, alina grew extremely attached to him and kinda forced herself into his life, though he never complained about it.

the two end up moving together, becoming roommates

joel mentions in his statement that alina was always a weird child; knowing and understanding things a child shouldn’t know and understand.

for example when her mother died, alina wasn’t upset but instead strangely disappointed like she knew it would happen.

alina confesses later that she once tried to get her mother to quit working at the magnus institute, that working there would lead to her death. though, kamala couldn’t quit no matter how hard she tried.

alina was once brought into the m.i. with her mother, which causes the Eye to set its sights on her (pun fucking intended). alina refused to go back with her mother since then.

when jon expresses interest in joining the magnus institute it leads to a lot of tense conversations between alina and jon.

alina doesn’t want jon working there since she knows the truth about that place, but she couldn’t exactly explain to jon about the Entities since she knows he wouldn’t believe her without proof

she tried to subtly ward him off the magnus institute but when that doesn’t work she gradually becomes more forceful which leads to A lot of fights between jon and her; it’s one fo the only things they’ve ever fought about it

the last fight they had was extremely bad, which causes alina storm out of the house without any of her belongings & stay with joel for a few days.

while alina stays with joel, she never leaves her room. in joel’s statement he mentions a lot of strange things happening during that time like the lights going out for hours at a time and the shadows of strange figures he’d see at the corner of his eye

the last day joel saw alina is when she said yes to the Dark.

she disappeared for six years after that. when joel made a report they classified it as her missing a year later she was declared dead.

jon blamed himself for her disappearance.

the Dark has always been around alina, watching and waiting for her. she never planned on saying yes, since she knew what it was, but she needed a way to protect jon from the horrors of the magnus institute and becoming an avatar of the dark seemed to be the only solution

alina returns six years after she disappears, right after jane prentiss attacks the archives

she’s asleep, right outside her and jon’s apartment.

her and jon talk a lot that night and she moves back in with him (though all of her stuff was still there, jon didn’t move or touch anything, like he was waiting for her to come back)

she practically forces elias to give her a job at the archives, he accepts because the Eye wants her there and alina becomes jon’s assistant though she doesn’t leave his side.

alina as never been a good person and being trapped in the Dark for 6 years doesn’t help that. 

she comes back the same; happy, outgoing and charismatic. the complete opposite of jon; but she’s willing to do anything to make sure jon is happy and healthy and safe. she’s extremely loyal and overprotective of him.

she later grows fond of tim and martin and tries to protect them too. 

i ship alina with jon (romantically) & martin (platonically) tbh; i think about this ot3 A LOt jdbdbdjdj they’re in a poly relationship but alina and martin are friends since i hc martin being gay and only romantically interested in martin. though alina and martin do end up loving each other as family.

Arlo Martin Moreno - No matter what route she’s on, the two of them are going to be ex-lovers. Gabrielle was embarrassed and heartbroken when he turned up in front of her, alive, after all that time. But even still, after getting through all of that she’ll be relieved that he is alive because she’s still in love with him (LI route); or because she still deeply cares about him and his well-being, and hopes that they can be friends even though she cannot bring herself to love him again. (Eddie or Insurgent route)

Edith ‘Eddie’ Reagan - Her business partner and friend of ten years, she is Gabrielle’s closest confidant because she knows that they both know that they’ll have each other’s backs no matter what. She likes to gently tease her, and I also get the feeling that they actually have a fair amount of inside jokes. Romantic or platonic, Gabrielle loves Eddie’s smile and treasures the rare ones she sees, and would do pretty much anything to see more of them. Also appreciates how protective she is. 

Amelie Cadman - Hmm, I’ll come back when I have a better sense of Amelie’s character and her and MC’s canon relationship. Gabrielle has come to see her as a valued friend though.

Kayden Smith - She is glad to have Kayden as part of the family, and greatly appreciates her company. Gabrielle likes to check in with her regularly to make sure she’s doing well and not working too hard. She also hosts dinner parties fairly often, not just on holidays to cook for her employees and show them her appreciation for what they do (this is in addition to bonuses lol.) Since Kayden has been working at the club from basically the beginning since Eddie scouted her she has seen the leaps and bounds Gabrielle has made in the kitchen and is grateful for the progress let’s just say. Was very patient while she was learning though

Halley and Kade Timmons - Honestly she dotes on them so much, like fabled ‘rich aunt you only see twice a year since she’s travelling the world, but always comes back with the best presents and stories’ levels of doting. Like for example if one of them offhandedly mentions that they want/need something it’s shipped to their doorstep the next day. Forgot to bring lunch? It’s ready by the time they go on break. Taking more hours or doing a later shift? Not only is she paying overtime but she’s making dinner. Someone being creepy and making them uncomfortable? Throwing out the offender herself, banning them for life, and doing it all in heels. Honestly just wants to see them succeed and thrive in making their dreams come true. Super protective of Kade and Halley, and would fist fight god to keep them safe so they can live long and happy lives.

The High Council - Gabrielle’s relationship with the vampire High Council is about as good as you’d expect between two parties who have opposing beliefs on what “the safety of [our] species” means, and how it would be achieved. Honestly, probably the more she hears about the rebels and their ideals, the more she’ll want to support a coup, I’m guessing. That and the fact that I think Ilian and Ravenna have a personal interest in her and Arlo...(Yes I think that they’re the two vampires in Arlo’s memory.) Illian threatening Kade and Halley is most probably the last straw she has for them all.

..and the never ending hypocrisy (of fanon!ship fans who hate on the canon love interest)

Again, I really, really can’t take people seriously when they concern troll about the age difference between Emma and Mr Knightley (that truly was the norm in 1800 and doesn’t have to be arbitrarily bad nowadays either if we are talking about consenting adults) making it the be all end all of excuses to paint their romance as problematic (because they have no other arguments and keep projecting on Emma because they don't accept it's him she loves and she really doesn't give a damn about the fact he's older than her), and play moral police with people who like it (as if anyone here is ‘glorifying’ it because of the age-gap, lol?? couldn’t be we love them because they are equals and they know each other well and they are in love with each other and a perfect match? I dunno) all the while they are out here not only giving a pass to Emma&Harriet’s (canonically) problematic ‘friendship’, but actually, actively, overinflate and romanticize that dynamic taking its most negative elements out of context, altering it all to ‘glorify’ them and present them as “best friends/relationship goals”.

(btw, nice try but the man is only 37? he's like, still young and BOTH Emma and Harriet think he can get it so yeah, stay mad I guess)

Listen, I love Emma and her character growth (she’s one of the best female characters ever for many reasons) but I’m not here to erase her flaws, and pretend she’s an angel, and the fact Harriet truly brings out the worst sides of her character and in more than one aspect, she acts like a narcissistic abuser with her in a way that can really resonate with people who experienced that both in romantic and platonic relationships. And the thing is, people don’t talk about that ENOUGH in spite of this being a very important part of the book that, truly, is not that hard to understand in its narrative devices and what kind of purpose Austen gives to this or that element (including and foundamentally the dynamics too).

Don't make me take one of the book copies I own and start to quote all the things to refresh your memory but the way Emma manipulates the girl, considers her an "addition to her privileges", thinks she can improve her, create her opinions, form her tastes and essentially turn her into everything she wants her to be is enough to make me see red flags in their so called friendship but the fact she is passive aggressive with her (pretty much telling her she won’t be her friend if she associates with people she doesn’t approve or considers below her) and actively manipulates Harriet into rejecting a man she knows that she loves? all because she cannot see herself being a friend of the farmer’s wife so Harriet must marry the guy EMMA chooses for her (creepy Elton) and that she deems right. I mean, the part where she dictates when Harriet is allowed to visit the Martins women (that Harriet considers her friends and who care a great deal about her) and how long the visit must be and Harriet does everything Emma wants her to do... like, hello??? I don’t care if Emma thinks she’s doing that for her good (as if this isn’t exactly what most of abusers think?), or if her conscience sometimes tries to make her feel sorry, her behavior is still wrong on so many levels, she is selfish, manipulative, arrogant and in no way her relationship with Harriet is that of a real friend nor it is healthy by any means.

The truth is she will understand Harriet and respect her feelings for Robert only when she herself understands her feelings for Mr Knightley (insert Demi!Emma readings here) and Harriet briefly becomes a threat for her but, for most of it, their dynamic essentially boils down to clever, rich, privileged Emma manipulating a pretty but not intellectually skilled, naive, 17 years old daughter-of-no-one making her a pet project because she’s bored and lonely, only to drop the girl like a hot potato the moment she realizes they both want the same man. When Emma is annoyed at Mrs Elton for her arrogance and the way she treats Jane as a pet project to feed her ego she’s essentially looking into a mirror that reflects an exasperated, caricature version of herself and her own flaws.

The fact the only thing Harriet and Emma have in common is being both girls would, alone, make me struggle finding potential for real friendship between them. There are moments that really emphasize Harriet’s intellectual inferiority to Emma’s cleverness and frustrated intellegence. I never get the idea they talk about anything deep, and it's obvious to me they are both blind to each other feelings about anything important, cue Emma not getting the fact Harriet wanted Mr Knightley not Frank (and Harriet worships her but doesn't see her as a human being who may have feelings too, she only cares about Emma helping her). Putting that aside, the power imbalance there is really HUGE and they are never equals and they will never be equals in any shape or form. It will always be ‘Miss Woodhouse/Mrs Knightley’ and ‘Harriet’  with the latter not really having a free choice whether she wants to be nice to the first or not. It’s even worse in the end because Emma marries the guy who owns the land and house where Harriet and her husband live. To simply put it, using what Emma thinks at one point, she’s everything while Harriet is nothing. I saw people legit comparing them to Anne and Diana and I’m like NOPE.

But I digress... back to the main point, there is no doubt that if you analyze romances written centuries ago using nowadays standards and sensibilities you are always going to find something icky or problematic in them; no one is denying that. But you can’t seriously expect me to see Mr Knightley as a villain and/or paint his relationship with Emma as problematic (for reasons that more often than not aren’t even canon ) all the while you are more or less turning a blind eye to the actual canon reasons why Emma is a villain in Harriet’s story and she realizes that she is, and that’s one of the main reasons why they have to go on separate ways in the end for the good of them both.

The fact the Emma&Harriet dynamic is romanticized is interesting in the way it also emphasizes how contradictory the "moral police" on the internet really is. When you really think about it, that dynamic does have a lot of those elements that people deem as problematic when it comes to male/female relationships. In fact, were Emma a man I have no doubt people, especially in this day and age, would endlessly complain about that relationship and see Harriet as a victim and want her to free herself from Emma asap. 

However, it seems like since the ‘bad guy’ is a woman in this instance, instead of being a man like it usually is, people not only give it a pass but actually romanticize it as if they like a woman having that role for a change (or they just don't recognize some things as bad if it's a woman doing them and it’s done in a platonic relationship instead of romance). I think while men and women never had the same power and privileges, some things are problematic no matter the gender of the person doing them and especially in Emma and Harriet’s case, in spite of the story being set in context of 1800 where women as a whole had less rights and power than men, Emma DOES still really have a ton of power and privilege compared to Harriet and in the context of her world and her reality, there is no chance for them to be equal or for Emma’s actions/behavior to get a pass just because she’s a woman.

So yeah, tl dr: if you want to concern troll about the age difference in the main couple (and project your feelings on Emma) all the while you aren't one bit willing to also take a honest, critical look at how problematic the Emma&Harriet dynamic really is, and you actually glorify and romanticize it as good and cute, in the same breath you want to policy people about whether they are allowed or not allowed to find emma/knightley cute, I'll just side-eye you and not really take your 'critique’ seriously.

1) Scott McCall & Lydia Martin - Teen Wolf

This is a God-tier friendship. The growth?? The commitment?? The love?? Unparalleled. Best friendship on the show by the end. (I will die on this hill.) Also, the way this exchange is the cutest thing I’ve ever seen?

2) Landon Kirby & Rafael Waithe - Legacies

I am very emotional about these boys and their relationship. We were robbed of more brotherly shenanigans with these two, robbed.

3) Julie Molina & her himbos Alex, Luke, Reggie AND Julie & Flynn (yes, I’m cheating.) - Julie and the Phantoms

Look, it’s impossible to choose! I love Julynn so much. They’ve got this amazing foundation of trust and loyalty and love that fuels their friendship. But I also am constantly thinking about how the boys came into Julie’s life and helped her feel alive again, like there was hope again (and how she in turn did the same for them). And that’s beautiful damn it. All of these friendships are transcendent.

4) Winston Bishop & Cece Parekh - New Girl

Time for a Classic Winston and Cece Messaround! I really loved how their unlikely friendship developed into something deep and caring, and how it allowed Cece to explore a more playful side of her personality.

5) Bonnie Bennett & Damon Salvatore - The Vampire Diaries

Bamon has a lot of romantic subtext and they could easily be a couple. But honestly, I enjoy their bond as platonic so much more. The way these two started out hating each other, and their friendship was a real slow build until they were stuck in that prison world together, and afterward they were inseparable? I cannot express enough how much love I have for the depth of understanding and care for each other they developed.

6) Derek Morgan & Spencer Reid - Criminal Minds

I haven’t watched this show in a very long time, but I will always be soft about how soft Morgan is for Reid. 

7) Ellie Chu & Paul Munsky (feat. Papa Chu) - The Half of It

I’m still not over how this movie really was like “all forms of love are equally valuable, romance isn’t the most important thing.” Like, it wasn’t really a romantic movie at all in the end. It was about showing the depth and importance of other forms of love and that’s a really lovely message. The strong platonic friendship Ellie and Paul developed throughout the movie was beautiful, and I’m emotional about it. (And I love, too, that Paul not only bonded with Ellie, but with her severely depressed father who we watched slowly gain hope again throughout the movie.)

8) Layla Keating & Tamia “Coop” Cooper - All American

Their friendship is honestly one of my favorite things. Like, it just...happened. But it feels really pure and good. It was important for them both, I think, that they wound up forming this strong partnership that simply started with Layla recognizing Coop’s talent, and Coop in turn recognizing Layla’s. They really helped each other grow even while both being in pretty dark places. That was really cool of them. I hope we get more good Coop/Layla dynamic in Season 3.

9) Raven Reyes & John Murphy - The 100

A+ character development, A+ friendship building. The Enemies to Friends was strong with these two.

10) Javier Esposito & Kevin Ryan - Castle

Taking it way back on this one. I was obsessively into Castle when I was younger, and one of my favorite parts of the show was Javi and Ryan’s “bromance.” It was mostly fun, them goofing around, but they had some really emotional scenes that got me good.

Bonus: Malika Williams & Alice Kwan - Good Trouble

I couldn’t find a single gif of them together, or even a non-BTS picture. But I love their friendship! Malika teaching Alice to not take shit from everybody is 11/10

A lot of player/NPC ships, really. I'll just skim the highlights:

I've seen a lot of Vestige/Abnur, but I found him pretty grating in game. Brilliantly written! Impeccably voiced! But my god, I just got so, so tired of every snide remark... Potential age gaps notwithstanding, the very idea of Vestige/Abnur is just blech! Miss me with that bitter old geezer.

Vestige/Darien is sweet but overrated, kinda like a macaron. No tea no shade no pink lemonade-- I know he's a fan favorite, and I like him too!-- I just never jived with it.

LDB/Miraak... meh! Huge meh!! Sorta similar situation to Abnur. I never got the hype around Miraak. For me, a semi-speculative tragic backstory isn't enough to make him interesting to me. He looked cool, sure, but for me that mostly meant I was very excited to kill him and take his sickass Cthulhu garb for myself. I enjoyed killing him, I think he had it coming, and I don't think his story gains anything interesting or constructive by surviving the ordeal and being paired up with the LDB.

And this is petty of me, but... HoK/Martin and HoK/Lucien. I projected pretty hard onto my Hok, Suzy Q. Sweetroll, when I was in the last throes of thinking I was a heterosexual, and I shipped her in a weird (read: straight) love triangle with Martin and Lucien even though I honestly wasn't even really feeling that. I don't know. The HoK has great chemistry with both of them, but again, I was projecting. Pretty much the second I came out as a lesbian I threw all that out the window. I've since known a lot of men IRL who I thought I was becoming fast friends with, but who dropped me like a rock when they found out I was gay, so the idea that my HoK can have these deep, profound, life-changing, unbreakable bonds with Martin and Lucien that are still 1000% platonic (because she's a lesbian!!) means a lot to me personally. Again, petty, I know. But that's the way it goes with RPGs like TES where you can't help but pour so much of yourself into these blank slate protagonists. (I promise shipping Marcien was an unintended side-effect that started as a joke!)

I wished to god FUCK people stopped saying romantic leatin's canon 😭😭😭

(I mean I'm almost certain that the writers would have gone that way? Especially with how overwhelmingly loved they are by the rest of the fandom? But god as is--so much of their shit can still very much be platonic and at this point it's nauseating that anytime someone does something tender for another person people take it as indelible fact that this character has romantic feelings for another???)

(Like, okay, I ship Dotin and Leachel hard fucking core but I don't say it's fucking canon--I just really think that they have the best dynamics with each other and "romance" has this implication that they'll live with each other for the rest of their lives 😭 But lord, if we get them as platonic life partners, I would fucking love that too, it's just the fucking fault of society that platonic relationships are seen as lesser compared to romantic ones so I feel this incessant urge to drop my favorite dynamics in a romance just to push for the sake of their pairing 😭😭😭)
