I am tired of people responding to my Erehisu posts by saying that Historia is gay and only loves Ymir. zutoph: i kinda ship it ngl. not nearly as much as i ship zutara but it's cute. i've never really thought/cared about it but... i can see it. toph and zuko's personalities mix in a very interesting way!

azulaang: SHIP IT. okay i have a confession to make: this is my atla otp, literally zutara whomst lmao. it's got the optimistic ray of sunshine but with a badass side hero + evil bastard sadcore villain, except now the stereotypical gender roles are inverted. finally some juicy stuff for a female villain! also, i love azula - she's by far my favorite atla character.

iruchani: kinda ship it, yes. i can totally see it - the wife & the other woman, but chani is the real wife in all but name while irulan stands doll-like by paul's side, aware she's being used and moved like a chess piece wherever he wants. so with paul being... you know. paul (i love him but lmao), i think she deserves some hot lesbian sex. like, good for them both tbh

stilgar/jessica: okay, this is just hot. maybe it's the javier bardem+rebecca ferguson combo that makes it so. maybe it's the reverend mother/unhinged follower of her dark messiah-like son dynamic. maybe because she needs to have good nasty sex after leto's death. but yeah - as i said, hot.

yumihisu: MY BABIES. seemingly opposites who can see their own reflections and pain in each other's eyes + monster romance (kinda; they certainly gave off some beauty&thebeast vibes when ymir was in her titan form) + the queen & her knight/protector... delicious, delicious dynamic. unironically yams' best canon romance lmao. i also like erehisu, but i do prefer her with ymir. the tragedy just adds to the pair imo.

eremin: OH MY GOD. my second snk otp!!! what can i say... childhood friends to enemies to friends again + soulmateism + eren's view of the world (that is going to shape the entirety of the plot) changes through armin's influence/he literally turns into a titan for the first time to save armin & is so ridiculously physical in his affection for him + opposites who are also complements + "i would burn the whole world for you" vibes. god they make me insane. one good thing about the anime ending was the final scene between them - i mean, the hug. tenderly holding each other in a literal sea of blood. "i will burn in hell with you" anyone?? HELLO????? also: my hot take is that they are vastly superior to e.reri (that i always thought as overrated) and only e.ruri can compare among the snk slash pairings... maybe. AH! and that eren should have been in love with armin, nothing about that ~i realized i'm in luuuurv with the girl who lives and breaths just for me only after i had a titan vision of the future from god~ nonsense, it was so badly written it makes me cry onion-style whenever i think about it.

Of course I want to share, I love oversharing about my ships HAHA. So here you go, a (short) list of my SNK OTPs:

LeviHan

(pretends to be shocked). No, but I'm not even kidding when I said that they live in my head 24/7 🤣 Everytime I do or see something, I would automatically connect it to Levihan. I just can't help it lol, I love them so much (both as a character and as a ship). Their relationship is mature and pure but fun at the same time. I mean, they embody all of my favourite tropes, so no suprise here. But idk, there are no other ships (that came before them or after them) that could alter my brain in the same way as them. They changed me fr, like something shifted inside me the moment I became a Levihan shipper. Hell, I even chose my uni major because of a Levihan fanfiction 💀 Not only that, my writings and English has improved a lot, and all of that merely because I want to write their fanfic LOL.

I've been a Levihan shipper since 2013 and I will continue to be one until I die. So yeah, expect to see more Levihan fanfiction for more decades to come 😚✌️

They don't really live in my head 24/7 but I still think of them often. Also, they hold an important place in my heart since they are my first ship in SNK. Not only that, they are also special to me because they are THE ship that went from being considered as a crack ship to a canon one. LIKE IT WAS INSANE. I mean I've been an Aruani shipper since 2013 and so I knew how small the fandom were back then. Not only that, most of the SNK fandom saw AruAni as a crack shipper, but we were like, "No! They are not! (proceed to analyse the hell out of their interaction in the female titan arc)." 😀👍

So imagine how SHOCKED and ECSTATIC I WAS when all of these analysis and headcanons CAME TRUE. It took us almost a decade, but we finally got to say, "See guys? WE ARE NOT DELUSIONAL." I never been proud as a shipper HAHA. One of my biggest flex is to say that I've been an Aruani truther since 2013 😎

Okay now that I think about it, the only ships that I deeply care about are only the two above. I do like other ships, but only in a casual way (but I still gonna defend them though LOL), and those are:

I used to be neutral with them but when that episode of Historia holding the passed out Ymir on her lap and said, "My real name is Historia", then they stared at each other eyes with such love???? BEAUTIFUL I SAY. Their dynamic and the way their characters arc intertwined with each other? Love it! I wished Isayama gave them a proper closure though :(

Oh man, I actually have a lot of things to say about them but I'm gonna keep it brief🤐 I didn't ship them at the beginning, but as I grew up and as I tried to understand their characters, I found myself falling for JeanKasa and their potential. I feel they will have a healthy, mature, and loving relationship. I also like the way Jean showed his love to Mikasa (he's not selfish and he's not blinded by his love).

yumihisu - MY BABIESSSS. the first aot ship i ever loved. they r literally gfs and in love. ever since ymir died historia was never happy. she doesn’t even love her husband. they were everything. i was a mess when ymir died.

jearmin - THEYVE LITERALLY HAD SO MANY INTERACTIONS. jean always has his arm around armin in some way. and they are always like touching in public it’s so cute.. and their size difference is adorable too. i’m a sucker for it.

levihan - i don’t ship them, i see levi as mlm and i cant rlly see hange w anyone. they are platonic soulmates to me tho!!

eremin - i def respect it, I just don’t rlly ship it. But I understand why people do, they’re rlly touchy w eachother. i’ll def write for it tho!!!!

This is 100% true, I mainly ship Erehisu, but I also love and ship Yumihisu too. In fact in an ideal world Historia would have been able to date both Ymir and Eren at the same time because she deserves all the love. Eremika on the other hand is just bland and toxic.

fanon vs canon: Yumihisu

yumihisu is literally one of the most misinterpreted ships in aot. 

Fanon yumihisu is just Historia being super shy and submissive around Ymir or Ymir being obsessed with Historia when they’re in reality, just like any other couple in the series. They both care about and show affection towards each other equally, but aren’t some “perfect couple”. Nor is their relationship one sided in any way. They’ve been shown to bicker several times (including in the back of a scene in season 1/2) and are completely honest with each other, seeing through the others facades and scolding each other for making dumb decisions e.g. Historia telling Ymir off when she was being mean to Sasha and Ymir calling Historia selfish in the snowy mountain arc because Historia was going to use Daz as a way to die honourably.  Not to mention, how absolutely furious, hurt and betrayed Historia felt when Ymir chose to save Reiner and Bertholdt. Historia literally begged Eren to get Ymir back, because they were going “to live for our sake, together”. Personally, I feel as though they mirror Eremika, because while both love each other unconditionally, they’re still close enough to bicker and scold each other for their own good. Love in AOT is very complex, but it’s very much present and FAR beyond one-sided “obsession” - and to interpret it that way is an insult to Isayama’s writing. And there is literally no indication towards Erehisu at any point throughout the anime lmao. Historia loved Ymir just as much as Ymir loved her, and Eren loved Mikasa just as much as she loved him.

It’s really wild being a Historia stan that doesn’t care all that much about either of her ships. Out of the two, I definitely prefer Yumihisu (probably because I ship Eremika), but it’s not some OTP of mine. Something that’s really annoying me tho is that a lot of those self-described Historia “stans” really care more about her in the context of people she’s being shipped with than her as a character. It’s definitely more of a problem with Erehisus, but Yumihisus are not completely blameless either. Both fandoms are full of self-inserts and it’s also probably not a coincidence that a significant portion of Yumihisus are Mikasa stans.

Well... the question focuses on my opinion on which ship has more chances to become canon, right?

I’ve spent some time thinking about my answer to this question, how I could go direct to the point while giving enough arguments to defend my opinion. Prepare yourself because I couldn’t and this will be very long. Sorry...

1. Eren’s characterization + romance

First of all, there is a very important point about Eren that shipers (even me sometimes) forget. A friend that loves and understand Eren the most pointed this many times when I was starting to forget about it... I dare to say that nobody surpasses her understanding of his characterization.

Eren isn’t a romantic person. We all have to keep in mind that his priorities aren’t the priorities a normal person would have. He is like Rick from Casablanca. There’s the duty and then dreams and then, maybe, romantic love (If we take for granted that he knows what it is). Erwin loved Marie but he had a priority. (There’s me finding more similarities between Erwin and Eren). Eren’s current development is more about his mission than a romantic one. Although he plays with romance, he does it while being blatantly blind about it.

Eren got caught in the middle of his normal development from a child that gets annoyed by romance and has some kind of allergy against cheesy moments (for ex. in ch. 3 with Franz and Hannah) to a teenager that blooms to feel romantic love as something important and unavoidable. It’s normal for kids. But Eren hasn’t a normal life. There was always something more important than learning how to love, be loved and express it openly. It’s not that he isn’t able to love, more likely the opposite. He knows how to love and he has his own ways to do it... but the way the world is restricted his possibilities to live a different life. Even in the way EMA never got to communicate properly most of the times. Communication runs sometimes as a question, a statement and no back question (for ex. ch. 3). Eren asked about Mikasa’s reasons to follow him, about Armin’s reasons, where he threw that line about his death being meaningless. Nobody said anything, neither Mikasa nor Eren reacted stating the opposite. They usually don’t have the time nor oportunity to talk or even think about essential topics as feelings of love or labeling their feelings.

Given Eren’s lack of experience and maturity that we could see until Marley arc. Is it even possible that he developed a carnal relationship with Historia before going to Marley? No. No, because it would contradict somehow his characterization. Eren is depicted exactly as someone that took this decision because he lost every single deep bond that would have stopped him. This lack of understanding brought him to this point. The lack of value he places on life and a comfortable life with friends and family.

2. The baby

The whole baby plot point is from my perspective just about the curse and a new generation (maybe) free from being SoY but just normal human beings.

Historia choosing this way was also the safest way to oppose her destiny... strategically speaking. She could trick everyone without being called openly a traitor. So I’m agree with you. Her question wasn’t romantic.

3. The father and his meaning

The father is, as I pointed out once in my Twitter acc., the farmer. My reasons are that there is a meaning behind his existence. He was a boy that dared Historia to break the rules and stop being submissive. He is aligned with Historia’s current role as someone who stopped being the good girl that follows stupid and detrimental rules in disregard of her own life. He is also a man that decided to redeem himself by helping her with the orphanage without trying to get her attention at all. Being a normal person who enjoys a normal life and also redemption. I’m not saying necessarily that it’s about love, but he isn’t just a nobody. He holds a deep, positive meaning for the story. Isayama pairs usually a sinner and an “innocent”: Annie and Armin, Eren and Mikasa, Erwin and Levi, Ymir and Krista, Historia and the Farmer. Eren and Historia are the current sinners on the matter that both chose the rumbling... let’s say.

Why this kind of pairing? Because one has to contribute to the improvement of the other. Two sinners (with the same crime and perspective) can’t help each other. It’s opposition what will bring them to overcome their weaknesses.

4. Development of the couples

That being said, Eren and Mikasa as pair are in the focus. Isayama went through 10 years of development of most of the pairs to build up a support for EreMika. He build parallels with YumiHisu and Falbi and gave us hints to understand EM better. The vow he made to her was probably one of those moments when he started to be romantic without noticing.

5. Eren and Historia: their moments

EH interactions are, conversely, of other nature. Both feel related about the point of carrying a big burden. While Eren has to save humanity fighting, Historia has the role of a founder who has to assure humanity’s survival by having children and keeping the royal family alive. Both want to be free from that burden and end up being “partners in crime” by betraying everyone. I’m missing the romantic interactions to be very honest. It’s because Eren is so self-focused that he anchors here when someone who is alone and having the same problems and feelings appears. But... where did the fandom start to see something between them?

Two moments. The moment when he said “she is admirable” and the moment when he insisted to spare her life. That obsession that is so tricky to even be explained.

The first one made a difference between how Eren acknowledges Historia’s attributes and disregards Mikasa’s. The fandom uses this to point out that Eren likes Historia more. Well, no. His relationship towards Mikasa was characterized by jealousy. He won’t admit anything.

Regarding his “obsession” to save her... this started when he knew the existence of Eren Krüger, his thoughts and the whole story about Dina. It wasn’t before that. We must also admit that Historia’s safety was related to more characters than just Eren. Since the very beginning, her safety was conveniently displayed by Frieda, Ymir and Reiner, what makes me believe that her destiny was to give birth to this baby (aka. plot armor). Her role is to avoid becoming a titan by her own choice, that’s her arc. With Krüger we also knew the importance of a royal: they can give birth to more convenient instruments for war. Knowing that he was devoted to the mission, I believe that Eren is being influenced by him (I want to highlight the word “influenced” as something different to manipulated). So this is all related to the mission and the final outcome about Ymir, the curse, the power and the baby. Eren partly wants to grant her the chance to choose, but he also pushes her to do so based on part of her desires because of the mission as he did with Grisha.

Add here the fact that Historia was prepared to sacrifice his life at the cave if it was needed. That shows her priorities.

A lot of EH shippers claim that she saved him. Regarding her role as savior, I’m more objective and skeptical. She spared his life, but emotionally speaking, she didn’t really save him. The proof is that he was still low, thinking that he was a nobody. Carla’s words were the message with enough impact to relieve him and make him open himself to Armin and Mikasa and tell them about his sorrows. This shows the difference on the impact on him when it comes to Historia and when it comes to Carla... this happens again in ch. 131. He thinks about his mother instead of Historia who was the one reproving his plan. To me, Historia is his friend and inspired him to fight just for his sake against the system and rebel those who are over him and oppressing him. But his soft side is related to Carla, Armin and Mikasa: his family and those, who appreciate his life over his fate and urge of freedom and to be acknowledged.

Bonus: when Eren told Historia that she saved him was more like “You chose this path once and I’m sorry. I’ll be starting the rumbling and you contributed”. Historia’s face to that looks like this: “Oh no...I fucked up”. It doesn’t look like “Oh no... I don’t regret saving you because I love you and I can’t live without you”. On the contrary, that’s when she realizes that she was part of this since the beginning and that by saving him, she chose to let the rumbling happen once in the past. Then she goes along with the plan for her own reasons and because she hasn’t better options to choose either.

Summary:

Eren didn’t develop as a romantic person yet nor prioritized romantic love over his mission. It goes against a previous explicit development of EH before the trip to Marley. The farmer has a positive meaning as the father. EM is more developed and shows romantic undertones and common tropes. EH hasn’t romantic undertones and it’s more related to the mission to save the eldians.

Hello Hamliet, do you think there are certain aspects of galco that parallel erehisu? I saw someone say galco parallels erehisu because falco doesn't want gabi to inherit the armored titan and eren doesn't want historia to inherit the beast titan. Tbh, I have always 100% thought that galco parallels eremika and these parallels are more than just who inherits the beast and armored titan. So I don't get the idea behind galco paralleling erehisu,

Sure, that’s a parallel. It also parallels Eren not wanting anyone else to inherit the titans, which was the entire 104th in the flashback scene, so I’m not sure that you can say it’s a romantic parallel. But people can interpret it how they wish.

Imo, Galco and Eremika parallel each other extremely closely as the most recent chapter indicates, and Yumihisu parallels both of them as well--and all three ships of varying canonicity have always been a part of their dynamic since both characters’ introductions. 

But, people can say and interpret what they wish. If it makes them happy to do so, go for it! Do I find it a convincing canon argument? Not really, but that’s just me. If it makes them happy, I’m happy for them. The only time I get annoyed when people have other interpretations is when they weaponize said interpretations to send anon hate or vague/bully people who disagree. Otherwise? Please enjoy Erehisu/Galco parallels if you want to! And dismiss them if you don’t. 

Also, for the record: I know I’ve said Erehisu is my NOTP, but I want to emphasize again that’s because of harassment and the gross implications with the pregnancy, not at all because of their canon interactions. I like Eren and Historia’s canon relationship, which I interpret as a close friendship, so I don’t want to like... write meta refuting Erehisu when I love their bond and I don’t consider the pregnancy stuff worth debating at this point.

How many ships do you like ? I wonder what you ship and what is your OTP ?

I’m heavy on multishipping honestly and enjoy just about anything at varying degrees. Like, I have my “oh this is cute” ships, or “maybe not in canon but in an au this could be fun” ships, stuff like that.

As for “OTP’s” I don’t apply the term to myself so much (at least within the context of snk shipping) but rather “I would die for them” which over the last few years is a constant cycle between ereri and eremika and honestly if anyone asked me to choose which one I like better I wouldn’t be able to. I love them both in very different ways, but I love them with equal strength (Rivamika is my solid 3rd). Ererivamika is my best compromise. lol

Lemme tell you, recent manga events in relation to those ships has been angsty as hell over the last couple of years and I’m desperate for some relief. 😂😭

Other strong contenders though are like, jeankasa, yumihisu, ereani, mikasasha, mikaani, erehisu, mikahisu… basically just take any of my faves and put them together and I’m super 👀👀👀

Something that really drives me up the wall is when someone talks positively about Yumihisu, which is indeed a really good romantic relationship, only to compare it to Eremika. They are nothing alike, Yumihisu is a good romance where both sides brought out the best in each other, meanwhile Eremika is a toxic obsession where they brought out the worst in each other. Yeah, I will admit that Erehisu is my favorite Attack on Titan ship, but I also love and ship Yumihisu too and I don’t ever want it to ever be compared to Eremika.

When of if I started shipping it: When I first saw them in the same frame? Aha no but it was pretty instant. I think it was when Ymir put an arm around Historia and told her something like ‘when this is all over I’m gonna marry you’. Bc I was like 👀 canon lgbts excuse me haha and I’ve been in love and drawn in since

My thoughts: I love them heaps!!! Like Ymir says they’re both very similar with y'know the whole living a lie thing they’ve been through. They’ve both been through horrible things no little girl should have gone through. Yet (as much as Ymir likes to deny it) they both still have some compassion inside and a caring nature. I just feel like they really understand each other and they need someone like that. I also just think they compliment each other really nicely like two sides of the same coin. I love their lil fights/arguments too I think they’re adorable bc they’re healthy and normal and are usually made to try and help the other person. Summary: they’re super cute I love them

What makes me happy about them: That they’re canon (especially as lgbts) !!! Like I can still remember the day it was announced my friend and I were like crying and clinging to each other the whole day haha. And they’re just really cute and a perfect match in my opinion

What makes me sad about them:If you’re caught up on the manga I think you could take a guess. Also how they seem to be almost destined to never be properly together with Ymir’s deal with Reiner and Historia with her queen duties. Also both of their backstories are tragic and always make me sad

Things done in fanfic that annoys me:I guess just mischaracterisation like Historia being portrayed as super sweet and innocent. Other than that nothing really!

Things I look for in fanfic:I’m always looking out for canonverse yumihisus but I haven’t came across many. I’m not sure, I haven’t really read a yumihisu fic that’s really blown me away. I actually haven’t read that much anyways so please if you want recommend me some if anyone knows any! I love aus too bc then my girls can be happily together

How I feel about this character: She’s a blessing. She’s very sweet and strong. I wish she wasn’t just reduced to potato jokes bc she’s so much more than that! She’s such a good person and character! I love how goofy and sometimes rebellious yet polite and kind she is. I love that she’s shown with the little insecurity of her accent and her way of speaking but her friends always try and bring her out of that as they love her the way she is. I love that she expresses fear as you realistically would. She’s a very real, believable and relatable character.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: Mikasa, Connie, Ymir (is this a thing?? please be a thing), Historia ahhhh Sasha and all the girls please, Mina bc of that one official art and actually holy heck they would have been cute, Annie? Jean? idk Sasha’s so nice she could click w anyone

My non-romantic OTP for this character:Springles? Some days I ship them romantically and then other times I just see them as friends who endlessly support each other

My unpopular opinion about this character: While I thought the added scenes of Sasha in s2 were cute I was a little upset that almost all of her added dialogue revolved around food bc I’m kind of over that being a main characteristic of her when she’s so much more

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I want her to see her papa again and I want him and everyone to tell her how proud they are of her and how strong she has been/is. I want her to look after herself and be swarmed with love and support from her friends

Character: Historia

How I feel about this character: Historia is really important to me personally as I relate to her a lot (both of us being super gay for Ymir lmao)

But like the whole taking on a different personality for most of your life. Like I was very much like Krista during most of my school life. I was overly kind, sweet and caring to everyone even people who really did not deserve it. It’s quite interesting actually that as I read Historia starting to ‘live for herself’ and as herself I was too. So I kind of grew out of that with her which is why she’s very important to me.

And it’s always nice to find a character you relate to and the fact that she likes girls too is just 🙏🙏

My non-romantic OTP for this character:Maybe Reiner and Historia? Like I can see them being each other’s beards and maybe in an au tricking the parents that they’re straight as they’re both pretty much the poster children of the bf/gf you’d want to show off to your mum. And I think they could have been quite good friends

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t think people think it anymore but I remember when the chapters were coming out as her as Historia most people thought she was this super cold bitch (me included at first) but hah that’s not the case. I mean she’s not ridiculously nice goddess Krista but she definitely still cares about herself, Ymir, her friends and children. You just have to remember she had a rough life and childhood of course she’s gonna come across as cold and distant sometimes.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:I want her and Ymir to get married and to take in the orphaned children and raise them as their own (with the help of her loyal servants and possibly in their free time Levi Squad as Historia is a very busy queen). Ymir would love her lots and Historia would raise and treat the children how she wished she could have been. She’d dedicate as much time as she could with them. I want her to be happy and content with her life
