i looked at threads so you don't have to

the point of social media is to feel like you can connect with EVERYONE there, and in that sense, since Threads (by meta) is the only twitter competitor with a userbase pre-baked-in, i think they are by FAR the only actual threat to twitter in the near future

i love watching drama from the sidelines so i gathered some info about it, for all of us curious but cautious creatures:

toc: 1. features 2. acct deletion 3. home feed 4. privacy etc

1. threads is purposefully launching with MINIMUM POSSIBLE features. they are not shy about saying this. (wikipedia literally begins the history section of their Threads page by talking about twitter) they saw an opportunity to launch when and where it hurts and they TOOK it, instead of waiting to build an actually full service. and it's WORKING.

as of now, you can post/like/comment, repost, un/follow, mute and block things, and search (for accts). no dms, hashtags, web app, searching for posts, and your home feed IS your explore page (more on this later).

2. they are 'looking into' a way to delete your threads account without deleting your entire instagram. (instagram ceo, via threads, and mentioned in other sources scattered around here)

from a slightly tech standpoint, threads is officially built as an offshoot of instagram. it literally calls itself an instagram app. when you sign up, you can only sign up via instagram. so depending on how they developed threads, it's likely that it was literally just easier to build a version of threads that is basically instagram with a hat, where removing the hat removes the body (??). if i give them some benefit of the doubt, maybe they just haven't figured out how deletion should work, since they seem to want every insta acct to have exactly one threads acct (so they'd need to plan ahead in case of returning signups and all). and since they wanted to get threads out as fast as possible, this is just what it came out as.

still, they don't seem to be promising much. imagine if they finish 'looking into' it and decide it isn't worth implementing. lol. also it was still definitely greedy of them to link those deletions together now so no one can leave when they realize there is no functionality yet! the same greedy that made them release this half-baked idea in the first place.

but, if you already made a threads, it is Possible that you will eventually be able to delete it without affecting insta.

3. from what i understand, getting used to threads is like training your fyp on tiktok. (i've also never had a tiktok lmao, but my friends do) it does not have a chronological timeline. it does not even have a Following timeline. you are served whatever the algorithm desires and you just have to deal with it, and you WILL be wading through default shit for a while (the verge but also Everyone is complaining about this lol)

they say that they are working on it too (instagram ceo again, via threads-- with much more conviction than they had for the deletion feature)

4. yes, it is asking for WAY TOO MUCH DATA ACCESS in the app store. meta does this with all of their apps (the general permissions list for threads on the app store is identical to fb's and insta's).

i've seen some people say that threads might not be actively using (or collecting??) every single category. notably, threads does not have ads yet, so a lot of visible surveillance things that fb is known for have not shown up.

this might be true Now (though it's an awfully generous opinion!), but they are At Least actively opening the doors to do so in the future. if you've already agreed to those permissions when downloading or logging into the app, you will NOT be notified if a new update suddenly starts siphoning all the data they ignored before. just so yall are aware.

this is likely not as big of a deal if you already have insta and/or fb downloaded, but it's always great to be informed :)

and yes, meta is withholding official launch in the entire EU, almost certainly because of their data privacy AND new anti-trust legislations. (some links may require subscriptions, but not all) there are other posts about this already though.

basically, threads is hardly even meant to be used at this point. it's almost completely unusable compared to other competing sites, which already existed. it's also run by a Notoriously Evil, massive company, with 114 Blazing Red Flags for personal security. (one for each type of data they ask for, plus 100 extra for saying "other data")

they are launching now to attract as large of a userbase as possible, and then just squatting on it as they figure out which functions to add and how to do that. from what i see, most people are joining for the same reason-- claim their username, and then squat on it as they wait for the app to be functional. no hate to them, because meta is nothing if not a master of marketing, and also there are a lot of legit reasons why you may want to claim your name, or make sure your following can stay with you, etc etc.

but what i'm going to be doing, and recommending to everyone else as well, is just grab a snack and watch this crazy competition from a Safe Distance as it goes down. i said that threads is probably the only twt competitor in the immediate future, because it's the only one with the pre-established market control to be one. but if we don't want to hand our entire society over to a soulless megacorp, we can play the long game. i mean, we're already Here, right? might as well just settle in for a long haul🍿

We’re already halfway through our blogs for the summer term, and rapidly approaching the halfway point of the term itself. Time flies when you’re having fun, right? As it turns out, since I normally teach this course each June, I have unwittingly found myself with a plethora of discussion topics thanks to Pride Month. After all, it has become the basis of the MBA Group Project this term. Come back next year—not you, mind you, but other students—and I suspect it will be same song, different verse.  

I easily could have made every blog focus on some aspect of the controversial topic, but have chosen to limit myself. I don’t want to beat a dead horse. Besides, there are other things going on, not just yet another boycott.

But this one begs to be discussed if only because it involves one of America’s most prominent sit-down restaurant chains. Cracker Barrel—can you believe it?—is now under the gun. It was one thing last August when they innocently added Impossible sausage patties to the menu and an uproar ensued, but when they announced on 8th June this year via their Facebook and Instagram feeds that they welcomed the LGBTQ+ community to dine there, heads started exploding and threats gushed forth.

Heck, even Congressman Ronny Jackson, a local Texas Panhandle politician, chimed in. Good grief, Bro. Must have been a slow day in DC.

Vocal opponents screamed that “you have been welcome all along, so why do they need to announce this?” Or something to that effect. The rainbow rocker, though, is what really pushed some folks off the cliff.

To Cracker Barrel’s great credit (as well as Target, they too feeling the wrath of consumer bullies), they have continued to use their social media accounts since then. Bud Light? Crickets since April. Their continued use speaks volumes, because life and business go on. Furthermore, by not allowing themselves to be pushed into silence, they are effectively uttering a barnyard epithet initialized by FTS.

As for the ultra-conservatives loudly orating their farewell speeches, I’m pretty sure they’re running out of places to shop and dine. Except for maybe Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby. Heck, even Walmart observed Pride Month, although significantly more muted than others. I guess whispered is the word.

To be fair, the Left has excoriated some through the years too, most notably Chick-fil-A and Hobby Lobby. In an effort to remain an equal opportunity critic here, I’ll just say that anyone boycotting a place they otherwise once loved—until they saw something they did not like—is kind of like biting off your nose to spite your face. You are only hurting yourself by eliminating someone or some thing from your choice set.

But as for the current crop of naysayers, they are wrong for trying to bully companies to do their bidding. This is not a battle on Christianity or your values. It’s a battle on having not done such a good job through the years in granting everyone the same rights and privileges.

I have had to suffer through the usual litany of twisted logic from more than one person. “Why don’t we have heterosexual pride month?” How about because it is heterosexual pride month all 12 of the months? I have even heard the same question asked of Black History Month. Really? You’re not good with it being White History Month every single month of the year?

While we’re at it, maybe we should bring Native Americans into the conversation too, because we’ve done an even worse job disenfranchising them. Christopher Columbus wasn’t the shining exemplar of European heritage and seafaring adventure he has been made out to be, nor would President Andrew Jackson and the Trail of Tears that happened in the wake of his actions.

Before you say I’m just feeling the effects of white guilt, I’ll say that I don’t see treating people fairly as a Left or Right issue. It is a humanitarian issue. I doff my hat to Cracker Barrel for at least voicing their support and rolling out a welcoming rocker, even if others may argue they are just band-wagoning.

And maybe it is appropriate that we have this discussion on the day in which we observe the nation’s newest holiday, Juneteenth. Put that on your biscuits and think about it.

Kim Kardashian Did NOT Cheat On Kanye West With Chris Paul… Obviously!

Those Kim Kardashian cheating accusations are getting shut down!

ICYMI, before Kanye West wassuspended from Twitter again for posting a picture of a swastika on Thursday, he took to the social media platform to accuse his reality TV star wife of cheating on him with basketball player Chris Paul. Ye wrote at the time:

“Before we get outa [sic] here, I caught this guy with Kim. Goodnight.”

The news came as a big shock, considering the NBA star is currently married to Jada Crawley, and they share a 13-year-old son named Christopher and a 10-year-old daughter named Camryntogether. Plus, it added another bombshell to the Kimye divorce… Well, if it were true.

On Friday, TMZ reported “sources with direct knowledge” insist the infidelity claim is 100 percent false. Insiders further said the accusation is nothing more than an attempt from Kanye to distract the public from his disgusting antisemitic comments this week. As we previously reported, the 45-year-old rapper stated that he saw “good things” in Adolf Hitlerand expressed “love” for Nazis during an interview with Alex Jones:

“I don’t like the word ‘evil’ next to Nazis. I love Jewish people, but I also love Nazis. … I do love Hitler. I do love the Zionists.”

Absolutely vile.

Following the Infowarsappearance, Kanye faced a ton of backlash online — and he took to Twitter to drop the offensive picture and the cheating accusation against Kim. The TMZ source (Kris Jenner??) pointed out how the Yeezy brand head has a habit of harassing the SKIMS creator in order to divert attention from his wrongdoings, explaining:

“This is not true and sadly it’s an ongoing pattern with Kanye — attacking Kim to redirect everyone’s attention after a day of crazy antics where he has said every hateful and offensive thing he can possibly dream of.”

They continued:

“He has a history of falsely accusing her of also having affairs with Meek Mill, Drake and countless others. Kanye has for years deflected his own awful behavior, infidelities and obsession with porn and sex addiction to abuse and slut shame Kim. She wants to be left alone so she can focus on the well-being of their children.”

You can hear the frustration!

Unfortunately, it does not seem like Kanye plans on stopping his attacks against Kim amid his string of controversies, as he clearly did not learn his lesson from when he harassed her and ex-boyfriend Pete Davidsonearlier this year.

So an absurdist Norwegian comedy duo I was completely and utterly obsessed with for many years announced that they are playing their first ever live show in November this year in Oslo. Although I haven't been actively fangirling over them for 5+ years, I loved them so fucking much that I felt I just...had to go! I initially decided against it after much painful deliberation. My hyperfixation has moved on of course, with my JxB AU story being the main focus of my life currently. I had the ticket sales open at the launch time - and due to going to a relative's wedding this month in a different part of the country I was beyond skint - so I was completely torn. I thought about how much money I'd have to shell out for it over the next few months (and I don't have much to spend to begin with) and all the commissions I could purchase with the money instead - and I backed off. Decided not to. I'd moved on - they made me manic - I didn't want to be like that anymore, they were in my past etc. etc.

Cut to 3 days later and I hadn't been able to stop thinking about them. My subconscious was bugging me with it and I was dreaming about the show nightly - part of me was hoping the show would sell out and take the decision out of my hands. I looked back at their website - and indeed, the gig sold out in less than 2 days. But - they added a special extra gig the day after! 😭 Clearly the universe (and my heart) was trying to tell me something (LOL) - so I caved. Completely caved - bought a ticket with money I didn't have.

Just to give some additional context, because I do enjoy talking about it - I was such a huge fan of these guys that one of them actually 'discovered' me and got in contact with me. He added me as a friend on FB (he is literally made of sunshine fyi. Part of the reason for said obsession ofc) and saw how much fangirl content I was posting about them on my personal FB. Not only was he not creeped out (or if he was he hid it very well) he eventually asked me if I'd like to post content on their official social media sites. Being that they were my complete existence and his interactions with me were literally adding years to my life, I of course accepted. Went ahead and posted on their sites for about 3 years, loving every motherfucking second. I made fanvideos for them for their Birthdays which they both responded so incredibly to. Although I loved the one who contacted me, the other member - well, he was my super special pash. Completely and utterly delicious - and even though he didn't nearly interact with me as much as his wonderful comedy partner, he did eventually add me on FB himself and would wish me Happy Birthday/Happy Christmas etc. - completely lush. Not only were they aware of me but they apparently 'talked about me a lot' - fuck offfff and when I first went to Oslo on my 'pilgrimage' as I called it (it wasn't to try and stalk them or anything. I just wanted to visit all the places they'd filmed their skits) - my main contact between them (who was following me on all my social medias) literally 'tracked' my movements via Instagram, liking all my posts as I was posting them, and messaged me saying he wished he could be there to show me around. These guys are legitimately famous in Norway, and also around the world through some viral videos. They're actors and composers in their own right - just amazing, amazing guys. Completely and thoroughly lovely. I obsessively collected every bit of work and merch I could get my hands on from them, both physically and digitally - amassing a huge collection including a lot of crafty creations and fan merch I made myself (don't pity me please, I had so much fun. I was living my best life) - got a tattoo dedicated to them - yeah, huge fan. Eventually I ran out of fan fuel and 'moved on' - didn't really follow them for many years, changed my social media accounts for various reasons, started a new phase. Didn't stop my main contact tracking me down on my new Instagram and following me there though. LMAO!

So long story short, I have to do this. I have to be in the same room as them - watch them perform their songs - it'll be incredible. I'm not banking on meeting them, but if I did, it would of course be insane. Again though, just seeing them live will be more than enough.

I worked out that this 3 day trip will knock me back around £500. I've been working overtime this month so I'm hoping I can pay for most things this month and still be able to start new commissions soon, as I have so many plans still. My Mum's Bday is next month as well, so I think July will be pretty brassic for me. I'm holding out hope that I can commission at least 1 new piece next month, but I'll literally have to see how things work out. I don't want this trip to stop me from commissioning new works over the next 5 months, and if I'm thrifty it won't. Especially from August on, I should be back on track will full(ish) force.

Finding my MoJo with some mystic help

I'm going to put this out there...I'm an intuitive empath that loves her crystals and tarot cards. Pendant's, and rune stones.

So after my rows with nature, stress, family, Dr's, and all around ill health (I don't have many Immunoglobulin G's which I call goblin G troup). Thanks to Goblin Gs going AWOL I have been on antibiotics since July of 2023. 2 weeks on these massive combo pills and a week or two off, repeat either till I am antibiotic resistant or I can get the shots to force goblin G troups to join me and fight. Lets not forget inhalers, nasal sprays, pills both herbal and pharma. medications.

I am going to fight with everything I have through 2024 and if there isn't a significant improvement in at least one area I will stop any traditional medical practices I can and try for a more holistic approach.

Especially, after a bout with COVID-19 that took over 6mo to recover from I have learned to deal with energy syphons. You know, the people who make interaction challenging and tedious. I've always been able to gage a room and the people in it but never trusted my instincts. That has changed, I know am trying to trust my first impressions and inner voice now.

I said I'd mention Johhny Depp in this post so here it goes. It's nothing exciting but more annoying from my point of view.

During my "I quit and will just wait to die" moments during the end of 2023 I saw what my giving up was doing to my mother and daughter. That's when I decided to get through the holidays and then make some changes. So my fingers started typing in preparation things like... nutrition, keto, raw diet, balanced, yoga, brain eating itself, replacing white matter, and so on. Each time I searched a topic Johnny Depp showed up in a clip. There'd be a dog, guitar, baby, rants on his divorce, with his son, etc. His clips had nothing to do with what I was researching.

Let me refresh you...I DON'T CARE ABOUT FAMOUS PEOPLE SO i DON'T RESEARCH THEM. Though stuff does pop up occasionally it's not about one celeb over and over. During this time I had looked up why people couldn't leave Keanu Reeves and his girlfriend alone. My daughter brought it to my attention so I searched.

According to computer science if you search a topic either via typing it on a keyboard or verbally asking an AI like Alexa about it. Once you've selected the topic: famous name, raised garden beds, new roofs, dog characteristics, etc. the search engine (bing, google, etc) will flood you with ads regarding these specific topics.

Mr. Reeves plays bass in a band so why was Depp the one showing up?

After a few weeks of Johnny Depp ads annoying the crap out of me I went to bed irritated and with a killer migraine. That is until I remembered...things usually happen for a reason. What is the reason? So I asked Alexa...what instrument he plays, his band name, other members, play some of their songs.

I'll be honest and say the first song didn't resonate with me. I continued for a few more songs and one was an Alice Cooper remix. This brought nostalgia and emotion that I've missed since I stopped listening to music regularly. Migraines and music or any noise don't get along so I opted for quiet.

I asked for Alexa to switch to 80s rock and something clicked.

I've started this blog and not sure how often I'll post since I quit Social medias for the most part...esp FB, to limit screen times. I'm looking into a free course on coding through Stratford U. I have a BA in computers but it's been ages since I've written code or done anything with computers themselves due to illness.

Remember I am writing most things, except this blog, long hand.

Oh I want to say in case one of Johnny's people see this post that I wrote to him to thank him for reminding me about my love of music. I stopped listening again during a rough patch and he started popping up again! I grabbed my headphones and started listening to some Mozart. A day later the pop ups were back to normal.

I received a mass produced photo of him, I don't think he signed it and it was simply printed with photo but the gesture is nice. If one of his people read this tell him that even though we've never met I thank him for helping me out of a dark time via reminding me of my love of music and to keep spreading his energy.

When I wrote Johnny I didn't ask for anything but I just wanted him to know he'd made a difference in some ordinary persons life without even realizing it.

The writing of letters long hand, in cursive, has helped and if anyone wants to pen pal please let me know and I'll set up a PO Box. Assholes need not apply!

Time for a reading and meditation.

Chelsea Houska may be an HGTV star now, but she said she still cares about the girls she grew up with on Teen Mom 2.

In a recent video interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chelsea spoke about the MTV show she starred on from 2010-2020, noting that, while she’s not really tuning into to see what Leah & Co. are up to these days, she does wish the franchise’s remaining stars well.

Here, The Ashley breaks down some of the most-interesting parts of Chelsea’s interview, which was done to promote the Season 2 premiere of Chelsea’s show, Down Home Fab, which she stars on with her husband Cole DeBoer.

On how she feels about ‘Teen Mom’ now:

Chelsea made it obvious that, these days, she’s not exactly a faithful viewer of the ‘Teen Mom’ franchise.

“I feel like after I left that [show], I was just ready to leave it behind,” Chelsea said as diplomatically as possible. “But, of course, I see clips online.”

Chelsea said that she does still care about her former ‘Teen Mom’ co-stars, though.

“These girls were a huge part, a very important part, of my life as well,” she said. “We all kind of went through the same thing at the same time together. Even if I don’t talk to these girls all the time, my heart is still with them.”

“I still care about all of those girls so much,” Chelsea continued. “I just wish them so, so well.”

Chelsea added that she doesn’t actually speak to any of the ‘Teen Mom’ girls, other than the occasional text with Kail Lowry. However, she does follow their lives via social media.

“I would be so down to grab dinner or get together with some of the girls,” Chelsea added, without saying which girls she’d go eat with.

On how her dad Randy Houska played a part in her turning out successful:

Chelsea stated that she still goes to Papa Randy for advice, even now. She also credited Randy for the way he handled the difficult situation of her teen pregnancy and the years afterward.

“I loved how my dad approached things,” Chelsea said. “It was very real, but gentle. Like, he accepted a lot but he let me know that he didn’t agree with it.”

“It was the perfect balance of not pushing me away, not shutting me out, but still guiding me,” she said, adding that she credits “Randlicious” for her being where she is today.

“He played such a role, and people definitely saw that [on the show] and connected with that,” Chelsea said. “I for sure credit him. Shout out to Randy!”

On how she & husband Cole DeBoer keep their romance alive:

Chelsea and Cole have been married for seven years, but said they genuinely still enjoy being around each other.

“I do think that us being together all the time only helps us because that’s just what we both need,” Chelsea said.

“”I feel like it’s fun for us and it works for us,” she said. “I do think people are different, some people probably can’t stand the thought of being with their partner everyday 24/7. But I feel like, for us, it does work… I think our love languages are similar and I think that helps. It’s like quality time and physical touch and we get that every day. So we’re very fulfilled!”

However, Chelsea said she and Cole are “not great” at prioritizing romance amongst their litter of children, animals and dozens of cans of black paint.

“We try to get our dinner dates in, but there’s phases of life and right now we’re just in the chaos,” Chelsea said. “…but we do definitely connect after the kids go to bed. We make sure to sit down and have actual quality time.

On possibly having more kids:

Chelsea currently has four kids–Aubree, Watson, Layne and Walker— and has said that she and Cole are likely done having children. However, both stated that having another kid is not off the table completely.

“I still think I might get a wild hair [and want another baby],” Chelsea said. “It’s possible. We don’t know and I don’t want to put that final stamp on, like, ‘Oh, we’re done having kids.’… so, we’ll see. But five seems like a lot.”

"It’s not just her either,” Cole added. “I have the bug all the time too.”

On how ‘Down Home Fab’ Season 2 is different from Season 1:

“I feel so excited. I feel like the projects are better. I feel like we are more confident. I just feel like it is definitely a level up,” Chelsea said, adding that she even had to stray from her habit of painting everything black and add some color into the Season 2 houses.

“[This season] allowed us to get a little bit more creative… I feel like we’re having a lot more fun, we’re showing ourselves, and we’re just enjoying the process,” she said.

Oh!! So this is your second time getting to use Tumblr? Well, perhaps I can help a little bit! I am a 2012 Tumblr veteran, and it's both changed in a lot of ways yet also stood the same in contrast to most social media sites. Here's what I can share with you, based on the years I've used this site.

For starters, there actually really isn't any algorithms, and if there is, it is are very basic in nature. Tumblr is very good like that. It does take some time to get the ball rolling, regarding gaining traction, and you'll still experience hit-or-miss engagement at times, but there's no complex secret algos that do secret things such as showing your posts more if you do certain formats (like how IG prioritizes reels versus posts), hiding your posts for using certain words (more on that in a bit), or even shadow banning. That doesn't exist here at all, despite how most mainstream socials behave that way.

Dashboards can be set to show posts chronologically. It's not on by default, and most likely your dashboard is currently on "best posts first". You can change this in Settings > Dashboard > turn off "Best Stuff First." and you will have a pure chronological dashboard!

The first five tags are what are most important regarding your works showing up in tags. I was still surprised that this is still a thing (was implemented in mid-2010s, I believe?), but yes, make sure that you keep the most relevant tags as the first five. Sounds a little strange, but that's just how it continues to be, for some reason. You can have more than five tags, of course, but keeping the first fives ones the most relevant can help you be seen by more people.

Speaking of tags, PLEASE tag any content warnings with full, uncensored words so that tag filters can detect them. This whole dumb word censoring BS started on TikTok and Twitter, and sadly thanks to the mass migration to Tumblr currently happening, that censoring certain words mentality is making its way onto here, in which IS NOT GOOD AT ALL. Like I previously stated, there is literally no shadow banning happening on here, so it's not necessary to censor words. Most of all, people have certain CWs filtered so that posts containing anything about them are not shown; however, by doing shit like "cw bl00d" (real thing I saw) when tagging, it's not detected by those who have "cw blood" in their filters, thus that post still shows up regardless. This is heavily frowned upon here, so please type the full word for any CWs you need to tag.

You can also have your own blog theme! Many newcomers are not even aware that you can actually have a viewable blog page besides the default scrolling one that shows up upon clicking someone's username. You can turn this on in Settings > Blogs (click your blog) > Enable custom theme. Tumblr provides loads of versatile free blog theme templates that you can adjust, but creating blog themes via HTML is also available! Probably the most freedom you can have regarding blog customization. Real quick, I HIGHLY recommend visiting themesrec if you're seeking theme templates but made with HTML!! I've been using them since late high school, and there's a lot to choose from with high customization (despite the blog being dead for years now).

Some other little tidbits (added @ 8:17AM)

If you wish to comment on someone's art, you can do so in the tags of your reblogs! People like to leave comments in the tags and really gush about what you've made, and it's definitely one of the best aspects to this website. There's nothing I love more than seeing a reblog with someone having a happy stroke in the tags! Stuff like that brightens days for sure. And as a final note to let you know .... growth isn't or shouldn't really be your endgoal/ your purpose for posting art on here, so I would not recommend treating Tumblr that way. IG, TikTok, and Twitter have done some serious damage hamming in on becoming big with big numbers and "OOOOOH gotta appease the almighty algorithm gods to get numbers!!" n' junk. But Tumblr isn't really about that. Even having a couple hundred followers is good enough, honestly. Tumblr's mainly a place to vibe most of all; all you really need is a target audience or circle of friends n' mutuals and just vibe n' share sillies, versus trying to endlessly grow to receive acknowledgement and do what's trending or whatever while literally lose your soul in the process. By letting yourself just be, your experience on Tumblr will be a WHOLE lot more fun and enriching.

Those are the most important ones I can think of at the moment, but please, if you have any further Tumblr questions, please do drop them in my ask box!!! There's so much to Tumblr and there's a reason why it's much more chill and comfortable compared to TikTok and Twitter - or uh, as the kids say, Tumblr is our HELLSITE /POSITIVE / AFFECTIONATE and not Twitter/TikTok HELLSITE /NEGATIVE /DEROGATORY

PS: here we do not use very modern words such as "moots" or "oomfs" - we just say "mutuals" and "followers". Thought I'd let you know.

Summary: A retrospective on the interconnected timeline of Dream, Sapnap, and TV and film star Y/N, via social media.

2020. Dream first mentions having a housemate and refuses to say anything else, and when it turns out Sapnap knows more than he's letting on to his audience, he plays along too. Meanwhile, Y/N brings their housemate to events and yet somehow no-one seems to even know his name.

In June of 2020, Dream mentions that he has to keep his voice down during a stream, so he doesn't wake his housemate. It is the first time he's mentioned any sort of housemate. He does not mention them again.

Twitter, abuzz, seems to all share the same sentiment:

The first trailer for Paramount's upcoming modern, dark fantasy, thriller HELIX, directed by Robert Eggers, and starring Y/N Y/L/N and Amandla Stenberg is released on July 12, 2020. After sweeping the 2019-2020 festival circuit, finally the film will see wider release in mid-November 2020. Described as a stylistic feast, the film appears to accent it's overall Film Noir aesthetics with moments of Psycho-Pop colour and movement, and proffers itself as a deconstruction of the the modern franchise villain. It's an exploration through metaphor of the idea that both the narrative and metanarrative that a villain finds themselves in pushes them to violent extremes in spite of, or even sometimes because of, the valid critiques they make of society, which often bely an anticapitalist agenda. Alongisde this, it offers critique of the modern superhero franchise's thinly-veiled role as military propaganda in Western media. The trailer is set to an orchestral cover of Mother Mother's Body with vocals by Halsey.

In August of 2020, Y/N attends the premiere of their new movie, The New Mutants, seen here on the red carpet with Co-Star Charlie Heaton, accompanied by a friend, who declined to share his name for privacy reasons.

Twitter user @.Y/NS_EYELASH posted the following, among retweeting other, similar supportive sentiments from fellow users:

Several tabloid articles are written speculating about the nature of Y/N and their housemate's relationship. Y/N does not respond, but does like several tweets that discuss how the media bastardises friendships and can ruin them.

On an alternate channel stream on August 31st, 2020, Sapnap confirms that both himself and George know, have spoken to, and consider themselves friends with Dream's housemate, but claims 'it's a bit weird sometimes, you know...' and though he trails off, he does not elaborate.

The exact reason about what Sapnap find weird about it all and why is hotly debated for a solid week. The reigning theory is jealousy that the housemate is able to see Dream in person.

In October 2020, at the beginning of a Zoom interview with MTV, the interviewer gives an offhand compliment about their setup and background. Y/N laughs and admits that they asked their housemate's friends for advice, and that the microphone itself is their housemate's; he also lets them borrow it for voice over work.

Halloween 2020; #DreamWasHaunted trends on twitter after Dream mentions that his housemate dressed as a sexy ghost for Halloween. Sapnap mentions that the mysterious housemate sent him a photo of themselves in costume, again confirming that they are good friends, but also calling it surreal. The twitter @dreams-housemate-updates is created.

Also Halloween 2020, Y/N posts photos of their costume, which consists of a sheet ghost, fishnets, and high heels, captioned 'do you think they'd still let me be in the sequel 😈💖'.

When the stream ends, and Dream has said his goodbyes, the only sound in the apartment is his PC cooling in the darkness. In moments like these he barely feels real, like he's given everything to his friends and his fans and he's only existing through wishful thinking.

Outside, he's sure countless people his age are losing themselves to the night, cool air turning sticky-hot in the modern day masquerade that was Halloween. His PC is silent, the LEDs of his set up have long since dimmed. He finally relaxes his shoulders, and in that moment the weight of the world slips from them.

Finally, he feels like he can stand.

The rest of the apartment is marginally cooler than his office, but it's still just as dark; pitch black and growing ever closer to midnight, so he turns on his phone light.

It's quiet enough that he half wonders if you've left to join the revelry for yourself, but thinks better of it. You would have at least texted him.

In his room is the only other light in the void darkness of the apartment; you're in his bed, on your side, reading something on your phone. Before he'd started the stream, you'd been going through the photos he took of you in your ghost costume, the two of you laughing hard enough to wheeze, but those few hours feel like a lifetime away. You cast enough light, he turns off his own.

Patches is curled up, purring, and refusing to move where she's decided to curl up practically on your forehead. Her eyes are alert, eyes shining in the glow of your phone screen; the minute she sees Dream she stands, stretches herself into a strange, tall shape, and nimbly running towards him, run just past him, and stand between his legs in the doorway, her tail wrapping around his shin.

Dream looks at Patches, and you look at him.

Yesterday the first episode of The Mandalorian had aired, and of your expansive audience of friends, fans, and followers, he was the only one who saw the way you were almost sick with nervous worry.

Now, your thumb on the screen keeps it from timing out, keeps your face aglow and tired eyes visible. His duvet is pulled up to your nose. He hadn't really expected this, but he's glad for it. No words, no sounds, the ringing in his ears in the darkness.

He pulls off his shirt, leaving him only in sweatpants, and he eases the phone out of your grip. In the moment before he locks your phone, he sees you've been going through your Twitter DMs. There's no light now, his curtains drawn, and the apartment quiet. You shuffle over to make room for him in the dark.

His touch is gentle in the dark, at first to make sure he doesn't collide with you, but then he doesn't let go. You shuffle back. The space lessens between you, and with his hand on your hip, you carefully lean to rest your forehead against his.

"I'm so tired," your voice is a weak, forlorn whisper, and he wraps his arm more securely around you.

Both swallowed by the darkness, by the silence, you know the world can't get to you here. This is a sanctuary.

There's no grand gestures, no declarations, but nothing is quite the same once you both wake up. Not different, just better.

FIlming for the upcoming CW show 'Walker' starring Jared Padeleki commenced in Austin, Texas commenced in mid-October of 2020, however in early November, Y/N has been announced as an upcoming guest star in it's first season, and is travelling to film on location. Among various updates on Twitter and Instagram, they post 'turns out i can't 'Netflix and Chill',,, my friends and colleagues going on well produced adventures in the background kinda ruins the mood lmfao'.

On his stream on November 3rd, 2020, Sapnap announces that Dream's housemate has been in town for work. While his chat is clamouring for answers as to who they are, he says they're sitting next to him, but communicate by text, not wanting to be identified by their voice.

"Did you take the job just to visit me?" In a clip from the stream, Sapnap's voice is overwhelmingly fond. After a moment, he adds, "I knew it, you're such a simp, you could have just asked- I won't take it back," he laughs loud and bright, "you literally took a whole job as an excuse to come visit me; you're a simp." And we can hear what is the the first and only, to this point, distinct clip of Dream's Housemate as they laugh.

Three days later, November 6, 2020, Sapnap tweets from his alt account about an impromptu watch party with Dream's Housemate for The Mandalorian Season 2, Episode 2, just after it releases:

As of the middle of November, 2020, there is wild speculation about who Y/N was rumoured to be seeing whilst in Texas, though no evidence beyond two tweets from the beginning of the month point to them being close to anyone. Several Instagram story posts have highlighted their love of the people around them in the state, and also deriding the several paparazzi they've had following them.

"You wanna come with me to New York?" Sunday brought with it the cruel anticipation of Monday just around the corner, but with your face pressed to Sapnap's chest it's easy to shut out the rest of the world, "all expenses paid." Your can't even be bothered to hold back your yawn.

"You want me at your premiere?" There's a smile in his voice that you've come to love the sound of, and his fingertips are tracing patterns across your shoulders. You give a hum of confirmation; his hand stills, palm warm against your back even through your shirt.

"Just got you all to myself, I don't wanna leave yet," it comes out as a contented mumble, holding him a little tighter, "I missed you, dude."

"What, yesterday while you were at set?" He huffs a faint laugh.

"Before that, before we were all, you know," you finally raise your face to look at him, "I... yeah I missed you." There's a flush on his cheeks that you hadn't been expecting, and his eyes are so warm and kind.

"I can't go to New York with you," he says so very gently, which you'd been expecting, but was still faintly disappointing to hear, "it'd be too much of a giveaway, for you and for Dream." And you knew he was right, but you'd still wanted to offer. Still, after a moment, you see the regret in his eyes, "I can't believe I'm turning down meeting Chris Evans," he groaned. At this, you propped yourself up on your hands so you could lean in and give him a soft kiss.

"There's always next time," you assured, and that seems to be enough for him, as he's grinning when he pulls you back in.

HELIX premiered in New York on November 17th, 2020, and Y/N attends wearing a black, impecably tailored suit with blood-red embroidery and neon pink accessories, as a stylistic homage to the film itself, and matching their co-star Amandla Stenberg, dressed almost identically with sienna embroidery and neon orange detailing. Highlights from the red carpet interviews and photos include:

The moment Y/N and Amandla first see each other and practically run to hug one another in greeting, beaming.

Y/N posing with Chris Evan and Katie McGrath, like the child in an awkward family photo.

Any and all interviews with both Y/N and Amandla being so bright and joyful that it's almost incoherent, the most notable of which is, after being asked what it was like filming with Chris Evans, both leads turn to each other and just start asking 'Dad Evans?' in a loop, as if its the continuation of some long-running inside joke. It culminates with Chris Evans himself joining them, and both of the young leads cheering 'Dad Evans!' when he does. He regards them both very fondly, seemingly used to this behaviour, and both Y/N and Amandla both then answer the interviewer's initial question with glowing praise for Evans. He gives them both a kiss on the top of the head before they all move on to the next interview.

In an age where no month is spared from the new release of a slick, shiny blockbuster made for the masses, we are constantly fed black and white morality, and worlds where even shades of grey never seem to stay that way for long. Director Robert Egger's genre-defying 'HELIX' is the refreshing and eloquent open hate-letter to this cult of personality that is the modern, franchise, superhero film, that we as a society didn't realise we so desperately needed. Y/N in the role of protagonist, the supervillain Woolfe, is a masterclass of subtle discomfort unto themselves from the very moment the film begins. Their nuanced idiosyncrasies are relatable and believable as we spend time with them going about their day. The moments linger perhaps a second too long, which, while easy to consciously miss, subtly adds to the distinct impression that Woolfe is out of sync with the rest of the world. As we continue on, and Y/N continues to captivate us as we watch Woolfe's moral, mental, and ethical decline into violent hedonism and depravity, its terrifyingly easy to understand and believe their character progression and decisions, even if we don't agree with it, even if it's completely reprehensible. There's a queasiness that comes the moment you start seeing Woolfe as both a monster and a mirror.

On a chill stream near the middle of December, 2020, Dream mentions that his housemate technically has Technoblade fanart printed and stuck up around their room.

"I think they're making a shrine," he says mildly, trying to stay neutral even as Sapnap is wheezing with laughter.

"Oh man, they're so gonna hate that you called it that!" He crowed, just as there comes a loud, insistent banging on Dream's door. Sapnap's passed the point of audible laughter.

"Can I help you?" Dream sounds all kinds of smug and teasing, despite how quiet he seems to have gotten since moving away from his microphone. Whoever is at the door, presumably his housemate, is not audible, "it's a little bit of a shrine," he appears to counter some sort of silent argument, "it's his quotes, like three seperate- more than one is a shrine -" there's the faintest sounds of movement, and something that sounds like a hand coming to slap a door or wall, "if you're gonna have a shrine of anyone it should be me or Sap," as if that's somehow a logical argument, "no, like an official one with candles, and the pictures closer togeth-" and his words are cut off very suddenly. Then, after a considerable amount of silence, and to much the shock of everyone both in and watching the stream, the housemate can be heard.

"You're lucky you're cute." It's so quiet half the words can't even be properly heard, and it's not enough to reveal the true identity of the housemate, but it's not hard to figure out what had been said.

The door closes; Dream clears his throat when he's back by his computer.

"They have photos of me up?" Sapnap's tone is all fond and warm, completely ignoring the fact that the stream had heard the housemate's voice very faintly... and were also quickly jumping to conclusions about how they'd shut Dream up so quickly.

"Yeah, the cute ones from when they visited last month."

summary: weddings are days full of love and joy for the happy couple. you wish you could be someone who saw this day as a joyful day but how could you when the love of your life is marrying someone else?

a/n: happy late valentine's day! i wanted to have this posted earlier but i got super busy with school so it's late. inspired by the taylor swift song if the summary and title weren't obvious enough.

it was a nice day outside. the sun was free from the shadow of clouds and the weather was not too hot but not too cold either. you were dressed in formal attire, as one would at a wedding. you weren’t here to celebrate a wedding though. you weren’t the type of person who would do this on someone’s wedding day, but you couldn’t let mark marry someone else without knowing how you felt about him.

mark was your ex-boyfriend. the two of you dated for almost 4 years before you broke up with him. you knew you were a stupid person for breaking up with someone you loved so much but you felt scared for the future. you felt that it was impossible for someone to see a future with you despite mark telling you multiple times he wants to be with you for eternity. 3 years later and you still regret your dumb decision, but you came here to fix that. you and mark stayed in touch after the breakup via social media and having mutual friends. when you found out he was seeing someone else, it broke your heart. it also didn’t help that his girlfriend hated your guts.

“y/n y/l/n.”

“i’m sorry but your name isn’t on the list. are you sure you rsvp to the ceremony?”

you rolled your eyes at the poor man who was just trying to do this job by managing who came in. you knew you said you were coming but it seemed likely that the bride had your name taken off the guest list without mark knowing. when you were thinking of how you could get into the church, someone put their arm around your shoulder.

“we actually came together. my name is na jaemin.”

you looked over at were greeted with a smile by jaemin. you and jaemin had been friends since college and he was the one to introduce you to mark. jaemin was one of the mutual friends you and mark had after the breakup, so he knew how it affected the both of you.

“oh great. welcome, you guys can head right in. enjoy the wedding,” the man said.

you and jaemin walked in. jaemin still had his hand on your shoulder until you guys were away from the door so you wouldn’t get caught.

“thanks for doing that,” you said.

“no problem. i’d do this for all my friends who strangely attend the wedding of their ex,” jaemin said, laughing at how ridiculous the sentence sounds.

you shoved his shoulder and laughed with him.

“no but seriously don’t you think it’ll be a little awkward for you to come? i mean i’m glad you did don’t get me wrong.”

“i don’t know. i just felt like i had to. i wanted to see mark one last time i guess.”

“you act like once he’s married you two will never speak again.”

“oh come on, you know she doesn’t like me. i doubt she’ll let her husband speak to his ex once they're married.”

jaemin nodded along. you did have a point, mark’s fiance has been a little controlling of mark’s life recently.

“well, i’m gonna go to the grooms’ room and check on him before the wedding starts. whatever you secretly have planned in that head of yours, i hope it goes well,” jaemin said, adding a wink at the end of his sentence. he began walking towards the hall and you were left standing alone.

how obvious was it that you had an idea? maybe it was just because jaemin knows you so well but you began to overthink and worry that others know you still love mark. you walk around the venue to clear your mind and accidentally cross paths with the bride’s family. they were all dressed in pastel pink, the accent color of the wedding. you tried to casually hide behind a waiter who was walking around so you weren’t stopped by someone. sure the family didn’t know who you were, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t stop to ask how you know the couple.

you ended up walking to the bathroom and hiding in there while you gathered yourself. you began to daydream about possible ways this could end. you could tell mark before the wedding starts, that way it is private and only the two of you. you could also just walk out and pretend none of this even happened. or, you could tell him while he’s at the altar.

while in your thoughts, you hear someone outside say that the wedding will start shortly. mark must already be at the alter so your first idea is a bust. i can’t just walk out now. i’ve already made it into here, you tell yourself. you shake your head to clear your thoughts and walk out of the bathroom.

you make your way to the room where the wedding will take place and sit in the far back. you look over to the altar and see mark with his best man haechan and groomsmen johnny and jaehyun. you wonder if mark wishes it was you who will stand with him at the alter.

the organist began playing a melody indicating that the bride was on her way. the usually happy song sounded like a death march to you at this moment.

everyone stood up and waited for the doors to open. once the door opened, flower girls began throwing white and pink rose petals down the aisle. the bride followed after them. you thought her dress made her look like a pastry but she still looked pretty. she walked down the aisle as if it was a beauty pageant runway.

when she reached the alter, mark put his hands out for her to hold. they held hands while the preacher gave a speech. you rolled your eyes at the preacher describing their lives as if it was some epic love story.

“if anyone has any objections speak now or forever hold your peace,” the preacher said.

he looked around the church. there was silence as people waited for the officiant’s sermon to continue. surely, they didn’t expect anyone to actually object to the wedding.

this is my last chance, you thought to yourself. you took a deep breath. am i really going to do this? the answer was yes. yes, you were really going to interrupt a wedding. you had to do this. when you finished thinking about it, you stood up and began fiddling with your fingers.

“i object,” you said.

there was a gasp from the bride’s parents as well as mark’s parents. other guests had horrified looks on their faces at your action. you didn’t pay attention to them though. you looked directly at mark who was looking back at you.

“i love you mark. i always have and i always will, whether you’re in my life or not. i just want you to know that. this wasn’t something i wanted to do in a million years but i couldn’t watch you marry someone else without knowing that i love you. i wish i could take back the heartache i caused all those years ago but i can’t. i hope you don’t hate me for anything i’ve done because i really wish i never did it”

mark was surprised by your speech. he didn’t think you still loved him after you broke up with him 3 years ago. he kept his eyes on you the entire time you declared your love for him. the bride-to-be looked at you and then mark with anger.

when mark stood there longer than you had hoped without saying anything, you began to walk out of the row you were in and headed towards the door. you took this as a sign of defeat and that maybe mark was truly over you.

“wait!” mark calls out.

you turned around when you heard mark’s voice. mark drops the girl’s hands and ran over to you. you smiled when you realized what was happening. he grabbed your hand and ran out of the church with you. you ran to your car and got in. mark sat on the passenger side and turned to grab your face when you got in. he pressed a long-awaited kiss on your lips. he had waited for this moment for years.

“i’m so glad you said something when the preacher said ‘speak now.’”
