oh i see!!! thats great advice actually bc when i ask most of my friends who r around the same age group as me, they typically tell me the same things so its great to hear from someone slightly older!!

Just bc you find someone attractive or have a crush on someone doesn't mean you "have dibs" on that person, bc that person have autonomy too and may like your friend or someone else. But that's not what happened with M/M and Malex situation. They're adults, they're not trying to figure out who they're are and what they want in the same way teenagers do. 

- It's not a situation in wich Alex "called dibs" on Michael so no one can look at him. Hell, no one knew they were even together. And when Maria mentioned Michael being attractive, she literally said he was someone no one would be proud of being dating with, but good enough for a fuck in the back seat. On Alex’s face. Imagine how would you feel, your BF saying the man you’ve been in love for 10 years is defo hot enough to be lusted for, but hey, as a person he’s shit and I wouldn’t even consider something serious with him and take him to meet my mom.

The problem is not that Maria had sex with Michael. She found him attractive and wanted to bang him (understandable, I mean, look at him), they were two consenting adults (even if a bit drunk) and they enjoyed it, so that’s not a problem.

The problem is after that. 

She knew about “mystery guy from the museum” since day 1. She knew about the mystery lover that got Alex to lost his head and being hopeful and happy...but still got his identity a secret for some reason FOR 10 YEARS. Not only she got to see how happy and hopeful that guy made Alex, but to have an history like that FOR 10 YEARS implies that the guy also cares for Alex. And the fact Alex kept his identity a secret means something too (maybe the guy is in the closet but even if he’s scared he wants Alex so much as to have a really long relationship with him. Idk, but that’s commitement)

The moment Maria found out the identity of “mystery guy from the museum” she inmediately apologized, even though she didn’t have to. And Alex understood that, even if he was jealous as fuck and hurt (for him Michael is someone he loves and Maria talked about him as a kick fuck. That hurts). Why? Bc she recognised the importance of Michael to Alex, while to her was just sex.

The REAL problem comes later. 

Michael saw Alex open his heart to him, again, and he was almost going to kiss him. But his siblings were in danger and he has to run (underdstandable but geez, what a timing), so he told him they would talk later.

What did he do? He stood him up. And maybe I’m a weird person, but if someone says to me that we will talk about something important later, I expect them to do it. Even if it’s just to say to me they don’t want to try it anymore (which is also valid, mind you). But Michael didn’t do that. He didn’t owed Alex anything and he def had the right to say something along the lines of “I’ve been waiting for you to decide for 10 years, now is too late”. But he didn’t. He promised to speak about them and then didn’t show up. Alec finally opened to him as he always wanted and he betrayed that trust by not even saying to his face it was too late. 

Look at it from Alex’s perspective: for 10 years Michael has been there, no matter he insisted of having their relationship a secret (to protect him but that’s not the point). And the moment he opens up, he doesn’t even get a bye bye.

From Michael perspective, I can even understand it. He’s got a lot of trauma recently, he met his mom who has been locked away a few miles from him his whole life, he lost his mom 10min later, they killed someone who betrayed them and tried to kill them, his hand got cured without his consent...I mean, talk about emotional rollercoaster. His world has been shaken to his core and now everything remotely connected with his alien-ness has so many negative connotations that for the first time he wants to have the “normal” life experience. He just want to be “normal”. Everything is chaos and he just wants to not think in alien conspiracies or convoluted emotions. He just wants something simple and nice and manageable.

So I do believe the decision of going to the Wild Pony was for the guitar. He just got his hand cured and the first thing he thought was to play the guitar again. To be “as before”. When no one but his siblings knew about him being an alien. When everything was shitty and terrible but not this terrible. When he was the closest to normal. So he entered the Wild Pony with the guitar in mind (Alex’s guitar, don’t forget), but then he saw Maria and her expression and he thought “now I’m not Michael-the-alien but Michael the perfect normal guy. And I want that”. And bc that was the most comforting thing he felt in a long time and he’s PTSD material, he kissed Maria. 

And yes, the moment he stops and think for a moment what he did, he will realise he fucked up. And probably would follow through, as a way to separate himself from Alex and bc he wants to have a “normal” life. Even if deep down he knows he couldn’t have that for long, that sooner or later Maria is gonna know. And then he will lose his “safe space”, a person he sincerely cares about, and everyone will be hurt and the “fault” would be his bc he “taints” everything he touches. 

Yes, the fallout is gonna be terrible, but at least with Maria, no matter how much is gonna last, he can forget his problems, he can forget life and death situations, he can forget his traumas and be just Michael. He likes being with Maria bc he likes her and precisely bc she doesn’t know anything about his world. It’s easier to forget and live in the moment when you’re not in front of a person who knows what happened to you and knows you inside and out and everything they open their mouth is like a crash landing on his heart.

ALL OF THIS can be explained. Problematic coping mechanisms, trauma, you name it.

But the problem is Maria. Or more specifically, how the writers wrote Maria (she’s fantastic and amazing and they did dirty to her)

Maria to this point never showed any interest in Michael apart from physical attraction. They could had built their relationship so when they reached this point it would make sense. They could have been friends, for a long time, for years. They could had learned to care about each other in the years Alex was away. They could had had something, anything. Tentative friends, intimate friends, friends who hooked up a few times when they felt down, comforting each other even if they knew they didn’t felt that way about the other. They could have been the unlikely friendship between the town’s hot loser and the psychic hot bartender. He could have been the friend that “Hey deLuca, you need help with those assholes?” and “Nah, I can do that myself, Guerin” and him shruging but keeping an eye on those drunk truck drivers twice her size. 

They could have shown ANYTHING. Something to back up that sudden “I catched feelings after Alex told me “dreamy boy” was Michael”. 

But no. All we saw is Michael comforting Maria once and having sex. That’s it. And let me tell you, if you “catch feelings” after just those two things, you’re not in love with someone, you’re just fond of him and wants to have sex with him again. There’s no deep feelings there. That’s at much a crush. A crush that it seems to appear after she discovered that the guy that could make Alex Manes smile like a dumb teenager in love even after 10 years was Michael.

And Liz. Liz finding out Michael was “museum guy” to Alex and telling Maria “you cannot control your feelings”?? That was incredibly shitty as a friend too. Bc while what she said is very true “you cannot control your feelings”, but you can control your actions. And she was encouraging her to act on her feelings, not caring what that would do to Alex.

TDLR: Maria acted incredibly out of character hooking up with Michael after she found out what he was to Alex for the duration of 10 fucking years until very recently. IF the writers had showed more previous positive interactions between M/M, it would be NOT lazy writing, it would have been a natural development instead of a sudden infatuation with no grounds (she disliked him even after having sex). With that sudden twist at the end of the finale for shocking value, they only portray an amazing character as a selfish person who doesn’t care if her BF is deeply hurt.

And that’s the entire point. She’s choose a hot guy she knows was with his BF until a few days, over said BF who has been in love and in a relationship with said hot guy for 10 fucking years. She didn’t care about Alex, and that’s even more OOC for an amazing character like her than suddenly catching feelings for a guy she always despised.

I find the “how dare Maria date Michael when Alex is her best friend,” sentiment among the Malex fandom really fascinating.

The notion that you can’t date your best friend’s on-again-off-again lover is derived almost entirely from 90′s and early 2000′s rom-coms and teen dramas. I mean certainly in real life dating a friend’s ex is emotionally fraught…lots of complex emotions involved in such a situation. However, the belief that it’s completely off limits is a product of pop culture.

What’s more, it requires a certain moral absolutism to buy int. It’s also a very heteronormative and patriarchal notion. The idea that you can’t date your best friend’s ex is rooted in this idea that romantic partners belong to each other, in some way. There’s a certain possessiveness that goes along with believing your friend absolutely can’t date your ex.

What makes it all the more fascinating is that the folks shouting the loudest about it are claiming to do so in defense of queer representation.

She didn’t sign to be photographed at will or insulted/attacked by fans or passer-bys! And i agree that if it was your boyfriend you wouldn’t leave him, and if he was her bf, she wouldn’t leave him either; but he isn’t, he is her “employer” and his lawyers were already on top of it, so the employee did not bother any more!
