So I have a Linux problem, and I'm just gonna post it here. I dunno if I have the reach for this, but if you know a potential fix, I will gladly accept it:

Basically, I run Zorin OS 17.2 Core on my Mid-2017 MacBook Pro (Two Thunderbolt Ports). This computer has been hell to make work, but after years of fiddling and finding drivers and terminal commands, it works almost like OEM.

My last problem with this machine, and the only thing that does not function like it's OEM, is the Sleep/Wake function. This is a known issue with 2016 and newer MacBooks on Linux; However, there are workarounds.

Namely, I found a kernel parameter that prevents Deep sleep and only allows the computer to go into s2idle when the lid is shut. This isn't great because it means the dies quickly and gets hot when the lid is shut, but I can't really do anything about it. This did, however, fix an issue I was having where the audio would just stop working if I ever shut the lid.

The final issue was getting the computer to wake up on its own. Every time I start the computer up (not waking it up; only powering it up from a complete shutdown) I have go into terminal and run this:

sudo bash -c 'echo "0" > /sys/bus/pci/devices/0000\:01\:00.0/d3cold_allowed'

I don't know what this command does, but without it, the machine will just never wake up. If you close the lid without running this at initial startup, it cannot be woken back up until it is rebooted.

That's not really a problem, since it's only once per reboot, and I don't reboot my laptop very frequently.

You know what would really make this even more seamless, though? If I could run this command using Ubuntu's startup applications menu. That way, I wouldn't have to manually open terminal every boot just to run this command. It would just run automatically, and I'd never have to worry about it. It would work like OEM! (Minus the less efficient sleep state.)

However, I can't do that. I've tried that. In fact, I have that exact command in my Startup Applications app, as we speak.

Any time I start the computer up and DON'T manually run the command, if I shut the lid, the computer sleeps. It will, however, wakeup (unlike if the command had never been input). HOWEVER. Unlike running the command in terminal, when it finally wakes up, the cursor photo changes into a gray square, my Night Light settings are reset, my wallpaper changes to black, my system accent color is changed to default, and any time I click inside the password box to login, the field immediately becomes inactive again. It doesn't stay active long enough for me to even get two letters typed. All this happens while "Authentication Error" rapidly and randomly flashes below the password box.

Eventually, if I don't force shut down the machine, it'll crash. It'll throw me into terminal mode, and it'll infinitely repeat an error claiming it could not write to some 'systemd jounral' thing because the operating system is in read-only mode. After that it'll either repeat that error over and over, creating endless lines in terminal mode, or it'll just freeze, and I have to restart the laptop either way. So, my question is:

WHY.

Why does running this command in terminal and running it via Startup Application have different results, and is there any way to fix it??

Because I loved the prompt from your list “Sometimes you get so close to someone you end up on the other side of them" and it made me recall a smutty scenario where Loki uses his illusions to mimic Sif to get to know her body more intimately. As a lover, Loki had never gotten complaints before. He had earned his Silvertongue moniker in more than one way, after all. And it wasn’t as if Sif was shy in her desires – he almost always knew what she was thinking, even when she tried to keep it to herself. Which was why it was so disquieting that she’d seemed distant as of late.

He’d tried to get her to sneak away with him the last few nights and she’d smiled weakly at him and declined, saying that she hadn’t been feeling well or that she was exhausted from training.

And it wasn’t that Loki didn’t have his pick of bedfellows, it was just…Sif was his favorite. So often his partners could stimulate his body, or they could stimulate his mind, but not both. But any sort of physical and verbal sparring with Sif, whether in the training rings, in bed, or lounging in front of the fireplace, was always a good time.

There was also the fact that Loki had been in love with Sif for hundreds of years now.

So there were many reasons why the thought of Sif losing interest in their little clandestine affair sent Loki’s stomach plummeting to the ground. This was hardly a problem that he could go to Thor or his mother about. So instead he chose to do a little research on his own.

Magical research obviously.

Which is how he came to be admiring his figure, which was now Sif’s figure, in the mirror. He’d spent enough time cataloguing her body, he was fairly certain that his magical copy was nearly identical. But he wasn’t sure if the body would react as Sif’s actual body, or if he would be reacting as himself in Sif’s body.

His hands trailed over Sif’s breasts (his breasts?) and down the flat planes of his stomach, shivering as he watched himself in the mirror. He watched as Sif’s familiar fingertips trailed over her thighs and then palmed herself between her legs. He gasped as he felt the wetness there, familiar yet foreign at the same time.

His other hand kneaded his breast and plucked at his nipple, gasping at the action. His nipples were usually quite sensitive, but he knew Sif enjoyed a rougher touch, so he pinched his nipple again and then twisted. He spun around, mortified and wondering how he would possibly explain this to her. The intruder’s jaw dropped as she took in the sight before her.

“Loki?” Sif whispered, looking bewildered at the sight of her naked body standing in front of the mirror. “What is the meaning of this?”

“Sif, it’s not what you think,” Loki said and both of them found it strange that his illusion only went as far as his body, but not his voice. Loki’s voice coming out of Sif’s body was a strange thing indeed. “It’s not for some trick or cruel prank. I…I just wanted to know if there was something I could be doing better, to please you more…”

Sif’s eyes were still wide, but she took a step forward, towards him. “So you…magicked yourself into my body?”

“Not actually your body, since you’re standing here. Just a facsimile of your body. I wasn’t sure if I’d respond like you or like me and I was just testing-”

Sif stepped forward again, within touching distance now, a strange look in her eyes. She reached out and trailed her fingertips down Loki’s arm, but it looked like her arm. “My skin is that soft?”

Loki swallowed and watched as Sif’s fingers continued to touch his skin. He thought about changing back, but Sif seemed oddly entranced. It wasn’t as if he hadn’t conjured doubles of his own and had a similar reaction, but he hadn’t imagined Sif reacting with the same sort of curiosity. “Yes, Sif. Your skin is that soft.” He stepped back from her touch and did a slow 360 degree turn, his arms out to the side. “Did I do well?”

Sif bit her bottom lip and Loki mimicked her. “You did this for me? Because you thought you weren’t pleasing me?”

“I wanted to know if I could please you better…if there was something I could do…if I knew how it felt…” he trailed off as he looked helplessly at her. Sif smiled, seemingly taking pity on him as she stepped forward again.

“You’re incredible, Loki,” she murmured, cupping his cheek and drawing him forward for a kiss.

It didn’t feel differently to him, not really, other than being the exact same height when he was usually taller, but he could tell she felt strange. Her kisses were gentler than they usually were, more hesitant as she cupped her own cheek and kissed her own lips.

Loki moaned as Sif’s tongue flicked into his mouth and his hands went to her hips, creeping under her tunic to stroke at the skin right above her leggings. They broke apart and Sif smiled wickedly at him. “Do you want to see how I touch myself?”

“Yes,” he whispered, nodding absently as Sif turned him back to the mirror and slipped behind him.

She giggled slightly and pressed a kiss to his shoulder. “This is so strange,” she said, running her hands down his torso, before cupping his breasts and taking his nipples in either hand, pinching harshly. Loki’s breath stuttered and he sighed, opening his eyes to take in the sight before him.

It was strange to see two Sifs in the mirror, with the real Sif standing behind him, her tunic scratching at his back as he leaned against her. He could feel his thighs getting sticky with wetness and he tried to catalogue the uncanny sensation.

She turned on her side and propped herself up with one arm, looking down at him seriously. “I can’t hide it anymore. Not from you. That’s why I burst into your room without warning tonight.”

“Can’t hide what, Sif?” he asked softly, afraid of what her answer might be. Her face looked so grave, so stricken, that it must have been something serious.

“My…my feelings for you, Loki. I didn’t think you returned them, but then I catch you turning yourself into me just to see what pleases me…in a strange way it made me hope…” She trailed off and sighed in frustration.

She sat up fully, crossing her arms over her chest defensively. She couldn’t seem to look down at him and Loki felt that old fear creep in again. What could possibly have her so upset?

He reached out to her, brushing his fingers across her bare hip. “Sif, we don’t have to talk about it if you don’t want to.”

“I love you,” she blurted out. “I’m in love with you, Loki. And I love what we have, but I want more. I don’t want to just sneak around or just share kisses in dark hallways outside of feasts. I want to hold your hand as we walk in your mother’s gardens; I want to be on your arm when we attend balls. I want to be able to punch Lorelei in her stupid face when she flirts with you.” She blew out a breath and finally glanced down at him. “I want to kiss you where everyone can see us and declare that you are mine, Loki,” she said gravely, as serious as she had been when she’d taken her warrior’s oath.

Loki was completely gobsmacked. All this time he’d thought she was losing interest, but instead she loved him? He pinched the crook of his elbow with his nails letting out a yelp of pain when it hurt. Sif looked at him in confusion and he chuckled as he sat up. “Had to make sure I wasn’t dreaming.”

She smiled softly at his confession and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. She looked down at her lap, clearly nervous to hear his response.

“Sif, my lovely Sif,” Loki murmured, hooking his fingers under her chin and making her meet his gaze. “I’ve loved you since we were young, Sif. I never imagined that you would actually reciprocate my feelings.”

“Why wouldn’t I?”

“Because I’m not Thor.” Sif scoffed and Loki shook his head, grabbing her hands as he explained. “He’s the first choice for everything. He’s everything a prince of the realm should be and I’m…his opposite in every way.”

“You are my Loki,” Sif whispered. “You are my prince and the one who warms my bed and the one who makes me laugh and the one who I love.”

“Well, I’m glad that we’re on the same page,” he teased, leaning in for a kiss. When they broke apart, Loki couldn’t help but grin at her. “I believe that there is a ball next week to welcome a delegation from Vanaheim. Would you be interested in accompanying me, Sif?”

She grinned brightly and nodded. “I’d be delighted, Loki.”

So I got...

A ticket to see Elton John in Cork in July next year!!

(I wanted to put a gif of Elton John in here but A) There are very few and B) They are of Taron playing Elton John...)

And actually I currently have two tickets to Elton John next year.

So here is the story part of the post.

I knew I wanted a ticket. Last time Elton is ever preforming in Ireland, hell yes I want a ticket. I have seen him before and it was amazing (Pissed rain and was freezing cold but it was amazing) so I definitely needed to get a ticket to go and see his tour.

I brought my laptop into work, ready to go at 9am to get a ticket. Except the internet would not load for me!

The other manager then set up her hot spot for me so I could get online. Woohoo. Back in the queue and got my ticket for pitch seating, row X, seat something or other, I can’t remember and I was thrilled! Pitch seating? Hell yes and row X was amazing to me. That was like 24 rows from the front. Perfect. 

Except I needed to log into my Ticketmaster to pay... Think I could remember my password? Of course not! Hit the ‘forgot password’ option so many times but the clock is ticking down for my time for my ticket purchase! No email, lost the ticket.

In I go again, same ticket, same problem! It was just not sending me the email to reset the password. I was then trying on my phone and the time was running down again!

One of staff members (I used to work in the room with her) came in and was like ‘well you get the ticket?’ and I was like ‘no i cant remember my password!’

So she got her phone, logged onto Ticketmaster on the app on her phone and got onto the tickets and got a row z, seat 172 I think it was (I am still waiting for her to send me on all the details..). So I was like yeah just book it, cos I was worried I would end up with no ticket or a seat on the stands way high up, so through her Ticketmaster, we got my ticket booked!

Delighted I was... Though a little put off that I didn't have any of the details on my Ticketmaster (Cos I am weird like that and hate having to ask and ask for my confirmation etc.. I would rather have it myself..)

But...

Then I came home  on lunch and my curiosity got the better of me and I logged into Ticketmaster, changed my password and searched for Elton tickets.

First one that came up for one ticket was row H, seat 68! I was like Oh my Goodness! That seat is amazing and SO MUCH better than the one I got earlier...

So I kinda bought the ticket... 

So hence I have two tickets for Elton next year and I know it is Elton so I didn't mind paying the massive price, but I paid it twice.... woops!

I am going to sell the first one and just keep my row H one! That is 8 rows from the front! Delighted!

And sure look if I can’t sell it, I will figure it out closer to the time. It is nearly a year away.

I also booked my hotel for the stay over too and goodness that was a tricky one. Already there was very little left so that was a bit expensive too but look it’s next year, I can save my pennies and justify the ticket and hotel and as Cork is about a 2 and a half hour drive so I will just take the day off work and get down early. So it was a mad ticket buying day. I forgot the nervous/stressful/exciting rush of buying concert tickets and I am glad I can ‘save’ for the year to pay for it. It is very pricey and I know I am super lucky being able to go and finger crossed by next year, all will be good to go.

Anyway. that is my story of the day.

In other news, Ireland is basking in 28 - 30 degree heat and has been since Saturday. I actually have a bit of a tan but while work hasn't been too bad during the week (The office has a desk fan that I can sit in front of), today was ridiculous. So much so I had to shower on my lunch! I love the heat but working in it is hard and we have no magic air con in our building. Each room has a fan but the temperature in the rooms is hitting 29 or 30 degrees so the staff and kids are melting.

Thankfully tomorrow is Friday and then the weekend and I do believe the weather is meant to change over the weekend to about 20 degrees and rain so hopefully it will cool down a tad!

Ok I think I am done with my stories and catch up now!

I am still working away on Robyn and Taron. It is slow going ( I have been enjoying the sun after work and working on my tan ) but I have been writing it.

Anywhoo, I will stop now, I will just keep rambling otherwise!

Hi aadya, I have a question. Soo, I was texting and then my WiFi went to the crows so I wasn't able to text. Then even when the WiFi started working, I couldn't text. So I logged out and I couldn't log in. (I was using my phone the entire time) Then I reset the password through my email, and I logged in on phone. After that I logged in through my laptop, checked the session

It was just this one. Mine. And I reset the password a couple of times, I'm just not sure if it's hacked or not

I've checked my queue, no rayban posts or the one with women and links.

Hi! You know, your worry is valid. I am far from an expert, but I can tell you one thing: tumblr glitches a fucking lot. I use tumblr from three devices at this point, my fiitjee tab, my laptop and ma's phone but that's rare.

I changed my password yesterday, and my active sessions showed only my laptop (the device i was using at that moment.) This happened in the afternoon, when i opened tumblr some hours later, back after logging in again from all my devices, the active sessions were back.

This could be just a glitch, and i dont think your account is hacked. Because: ▪︎you enabled two factor authentication ▪︎you changed your password a couple of times ▪︎ your active sessions dont show any foreign devices ▪︎you didnt click on any weird links ▪︎your queue is normal

D&D Session 2

Been a while since we played last. About seven months. Almost didn’t play this time because my internet was out, actually had to go over to someone else’s house with my laptop just to play.

ANYWAY

I’m a human fighter. We have @megaboy335 also playing a human fighter, @byzantine-love-machine paying a human bard, @rennebright as a human homebrew blood hunter, and @kite33 as a necromancer with @silvertsundere as DM.

Below is just a general summery/highlights of what happened. This was a pretty long session so there’s gonna be a lot. Sadly I wasn’t on my normal setup so I didn’t manage to get any screencaps so a lot of this will sadly just be boring summery.

So things start off as a recap of what happened last time because it had been so long we didn’t remember anymore. After that we learned that we got to the town to meet the dude but that things wouldn’t really be ready until the next day, so we could pretty much do whatever we wanted before we had to meet this guy. However he did suggest that there was an issue some merchants or something were having that no one seemed to be able to solve.

We went to the merchant’s guild and offered to help with their issue which was caravans being attacked along the main road. We get to the site where most attacks are and we hear this strange rumbling. To the west there’s this 10ft ridge and the rumbling is coming from that. On the other side of the road there’s this large boulder. Everyone seemed to have the same idea of hiding on top of the boulder, but I decided to investigate.

That failed. Didn’t find anything, finally I was like fuck it, and used my shield as a shovel to start shoveling away dirt and right when I did a Bulette burst out and attacked me. The fight was pretty annoying mostly because every melee fighter was getting shitty rolls and missing. The thing kept burrowing underground so we just had to wait until it came out. When it did come out it tried to attack all the people on the boulder but hit it’s head and like knocked itself out. Then the necro in our group cast mind spike on it so he always knew where it was. 

The next time it burrowed we decided to lay a trap, because the necro knew where it was we tied some rope into a loop trap to tighten and tangle around it’s legs. When it came out it worked like a charm and the thing fell and we finished it off.

When we got back to town we still had plenty of time before the meeting so we were able to do whatever we wanted individually. One of us decided to go to the city’s university to check out the mage stuff or something. While the other wanted to go on patrol. Kyon was the one who went on patrol and he wrote his own post of what happened. 

Kite made it to the university and ended up getting us a quest to check out some researchers who had gone dark. He then promptly forgot to inform the group of the quest until reminded by the DM, and in the morning we set out to the cave. When we get there we see it’s guarded by two gargoyles. We do an investigation check and notice they’re not dusty at all so we assume they’re bad. One of us uses detect magic and they glow with green aura so they’re double bad. We don’t really know how to deal with it so I just approach them.

They call out to us asking for a password. The necro who got us the quest says the dude at the university said the password was Miklagard. So he repeats that and the gargoyle says “You are three steps ahead”. Someone figures out this is a cipher and they work it out to be some word that’s not real. Once inside the cave we see it’s actually a lab and some dude runs up and tells us he’s a researcher and something has gone wrong and he needs us to pull a lever to reset the security lock down. They levers are in the left and right sides of the room we entered.

We assume that this has to be done at the same time so we split the group and one group goes to the left and the other goes right. When we open the doors we see there are few animates statues. We ended up taking them down without too much trouble.

When done with that we were about to leave but then were reminded that we didn’t actually help him yet we had to kill the chimera which was in the back room. When we walked inside Kite immediately cast a successful fear on it, making the chimera unable to move towards us on it’s own. Which was great so we just casually walked up to it to kick it’s ass.

Again I wasn’t on my normal setup to no caps sadly, but we beat the chimera without too many issues, then decided to return to town where we were pulled into the meeting we originally went to town for anyway. The hooded figure from earlier shows up and revealed they’re actually a hot elf babe. Kite fails a roll to recognize her while byz passes a history roll and sees she’s actually the court wizard.

She more or less tells us there is a war going own between two noble houses and she wants us to help Virin win cause she had a vision that says bad things will happen if the other one wins. At this point we were given a letter from house virin asking to meet them in a month’s time.

We basically had two choices go through a  cave near stoneheath that would be slower but safer and also allow us to reach the province undetected, or a mountain pass that is crawling with enemy soldiers because of the war.

We chose the cave.

And that was the session. We played a bit ago and I started writing this a few days later when my internet came back on, but then I got distracted until now when I finally finished it. We’re actually playing again today so it’s been a while I don’t remember exactly how long but anyway. Should be fun

Chapter Five Helping Sir Aaron Silverglade

Last time:

“How do you think we should handle Aaron?” Lily asked as she settled back into the seat.

“Lie,” Pauline said blandly.

“Lie?” Lily raised a brow.

“Tell him we were sent by his mother to find out information.” Pauline shrugged.

“That’s actually plausible.” Lily pinched her nose. “For a good cause, I guess.”

Pauline poked about the internet. “He’s still at the ice cream shop.”

“Oh good,” Lily sighed. “What do you think of Anastasia’s ideas?”

“I don’t think that the Baroness will care if we start pulling weeds and things,” Pauline said.

Lily nodded.

“As long as we keep our meddling to minor fixes that we can handle and don’t step on her toes.” Pauline bit her lip. “Keep up the stables, pull weeds, do some cleaning.” She shrugged.

“Prepare the way for the experts.” Lily’s leg jiggled.

Pauline turned a bit in the seat as the tram slowed to a stop. “I think you got her scheming about how to get back into her mother’s good graces. She might just do the rest. Or at least, point us in the right direction.”

“I’m sure Iris knows gardeners.”

“Exactly. And gardeners will know mechanics,” Pauline said.

They walked across the road. “You know,” Lily said. “She may not see it. I’m not saying her eyesight is bad,” she said hurriedly. “She’s been there so long and the things keep piling up. After a while you become blind to the mess.”

They walked into the doors.

“That’s true,” Pauline said. “It becomes your mess and quite comfortable.”

“Right!” Lily agreed.

They skirted the tables.

“Sir Silverglade,” Pauline said politely as they sidled up to a rather nervous looking man seated at a high table with a laptop in front of him.

He jumped. “Um, hello, that’s, me.”

“Sir Silverglade, I’m Pauline and this is my friend, Lily. We work for your mother. She sent us to find out any information about how to get G.E.D. out of the north paddock.” Pauline smiled gently at him.

“Oh dear. Oh dear. Oh my,” Aaron wrung his hands. “I knew she’d do this,” he mumbled. He looked around for some ice cream. “I, I, I’m not any good at this.”

Lily soothed him. “We also have new information. Whatever the problem is, I’m sure we can help you.”

“Oh, oh, I’m not so certain at all. I’ve been locked out of my laptop you see. And oh dear, oh my, I just can’t seem to get back in.”

“Have you forgotten your password?” Lily asked.

He nodded.

“Do you have a phone?” Lily said and tried not to sigh. Older people.

Aaron bit his lip. “I do. But I’m not sure what that has to do with anything.”

Pauline struggled not to roll her eyes. “I’ll get us some ice cream.”

Lily moved the seat and shoved it to be closer to Aaron. “All right, start your computer,” she said.

Aaron started it up. “See,” he said and typed something.

“All right, see that link about resetting your password, click on it,” Lily said. “Okay, now, go to your email in your phone. You can do that.”

“Of course!” Aaron didn’t sound offended at all. He logged into his email. “But, it’s not my work email you see.”

“That’s fine,” Lily said. “Is the computer registered to your work email?”

“No. No,” Aaron said. “At least, I don’t think so.”

“Oh, look, you have an email about resetting your password.” Lily pointed at it. She coached him through changing it. Pauline returned with ice cream and Lily absentmindedly took a bite. Her face brightened. That was really good ice cream.

Aaron almost cried as he logged into the computer.

“All right,” Lily said. “There.”

Aaron clicked on his work programs. “Oh, thank you. Thank you so much.”

“Anytime you get blocked out. You can reset the password through your phone,” Lily reassured him. “No big deal.”

Aaron frowned as he skimmed emails to catch up. “Oh dear.”

“Oh dear?”

“No good news, I’m afraid. G.E.D. brought in lawyers and are contesting our claims of breaking contract. In no means did our contract say that they could put up oil rigs on our land! Especially since there is no clauses in there for us getting a share of any profits on oil drilled and sold from our property.” Aaron sniffed. “As if we’d forget those!”

Pauline scraped the bottom of her bowl and widened her eyes making a face.

“No. I don’t think you would,” Lily said. “Well, we have some new information. I could email it to you and you can forward it to your lawyers.”

Aaron told her the email.

Lily forwarded all the pictures and the text with the oil rigs numbers on it. Pictures of the rigs in action, the pollution, the ducks in the pollution, the oil rig numbers, the broken fence, just everything the girls had discovered.

Aaron opened it and as he scrolled through the pictures, his face turned more and more red. He hit the forward button and then paused. “Oh, what do I say? This is indefensible!”

They helped him come up with a sufficiently official and polite sounding email that would be taken seriously as it was urgent and convey how angry the Silverglades were over the blatant destruction of their pristine property and endangerment of the horses and wildlife.

Aaron jabbed send a bit too forcefully. “Oh, thank you, ladies. I am so sorry it had to come to you coming all the way out here. I wish I was better at this.”

“You’re doing the best you can,” Lily said. “You aren’t dumb, Sir Silverglade.”

“There has to be someone who can do this better than I can,” Aaron moaned.

“With a bit of practice, you’ll get better. You have to stop being so hard on yourself. Your mother wouldn’t have you doing this if she didn’t trust you.”

Aaron slumped and ate his ice cream. “She has me doing it because there is no one else. And I’m worse with the grapes.”

“No one can be in two places at once,” Lily said.

“If Anastasia cared about the grapes or the family name as much as she cared about clothes,” Aaron fretted. “She always had the ideas.” He ate more. “Not me,” he mumbled into the ice cream.

He received a message. His eyes scanned back and forth. “They want to send their own inspectors tomorrow. They’re recommending I send the photos and the numbers to the police. Apparently, there’s been oil rig theft.” Aaron gasped. “How do you steal oil rigs?”

“Well, if they are stolen, it’s pretty dumb of him to leave the numbers on them,” Lily murmured. “Of course, he doesn’t come off as that smart. Ruthless, but not smart.”

“They want to meet the person who found them.” Aaron read. “Oh dear. Oh dear. I better go too then.”

Lily brought up the phone and punched in a few messages. “They’ll be available.”

“They?”

“It’s our club,” Lily gestured between her and Pauline. “They were helping Tyra out today with the horses and stumbled across all of this.”

“Oh. That makes excellent sense.”

Lily and Pauline shared a look.

Lily stood. “I think you have things well in hand now. See you tomorrow, Sir Silverglade.”

Aaron sighed. “I do hate leaving the city.”

Lily made a mental note to have ice cream ready. Pauline leaned over and whispered. “What about instead of a tapas bar, there’s an ice cream or sorbet bar?” She did a quick internet search. “Yeah, sorbet and sherbet. There is no such thing as grape ice cream.”

Lily whispered back. “That’s brilliant!” She swiftly turned back to Aaron. “Sir Silverglade, do you have a list of your favorite ice cream concoctions and, and do you know if they’d pair well with wine?”

Aaron blinked. “I, I could.”

Lily leaned in. “There’s that bar at the,” she frowned. “What did you call it?” She asked Pauline.

“It’s the Wine Cave. It’s not actually a cave,” Pauline said. “But the earliest wine makers used limestone caves to ferment the wine. So, the nomenclature stuck. The building is actually made out of limestone and then faced with imported marble.”

“Yes, the wine cave, thanks Pauline.” Lily said. “What if, I mean, it’s a long shot, but, what if you came up with a menu for an ice cream and wine tasting bar for your mother. That way you’d be able to contribute to the manor with your skills.”

Aaron looked thoughtful and bewildered all at once. “That is usually a good way to a hangover.”

“But, it can be done?” Pauline asked.

“Well, yes,” Aaron said. “But still, hangover.”

“It’s supposed to be a tasting bar. Small bowls of ice cream and small bits of wine. Pair with cakes and cookies,” Lily said.

“That’s more sugar. It’s not going to help,” Aaron murmured.

“Nuts?”

“Oh, nuts are good,” Aaron said. He was reaching for the laptop.

Lily smirked. “Well, I for one can’t wait to see your pairings and ideas.”

Aaron blinked.

“You’re the expert on ice cream,” Pauline said sweetly.

And with that, they left him furiously typing away.

Lily gloated. “You are genius.”

Boarding the tram, Pauline flushed and grinned.

It wasn’t far to Aideen’s Plaza.

“This is nice,” Lily said glancing around.

Iris had a cart outside of her shop.

Lily inspected the offerings.

Iris immediately sensed a sale. “May I help you?”

“Oh, please,” Lily said. “We’re looking for flowers to give to Baroness Silverglade. We’ve heard she likes roses.”

“I have plenty of roses.” Iris said. “In fact,” she snapped her fingers. “I have a beautiful lavender rose vine named Sterling Silver.”

“That would be perfect,” Lily said. “Is it a large one or something small like a miniature tea rose?”

“It’s a florist rose. It has long stems, good for cutting and has a strong citrusy scent,” Iris explained.

“So, if she planted them in the gardens, she could sell them too?” Pauline said slowly.

“Not to cut in on your business of course,” Lily said in a hurry. “Just, the manor needs some color.”

“The gardens are in a dreadful shape,” Pauline wrinkled her nose.

“But we don’t know anything about them,” Lily said. “That’s why we were going to get her some flowers as a gift. Since, we can’t, well, you know.” She shrugged.

“I know plenty of gardeners,” Iris said. “They’d love to get their hands dirty in someplace as high class as the Baroness’ garden. Though, some of them are pretty high handed.”

Pauline fiddled with her gloves. “Well, you know, the manor grounds are open for tourists to come and look around,” she said. “I mean, if they had any plans.”

Lily lowered her voice. “We’ve heard the Baroness likes plans.”

Iris put a finger next to her nose. “I understand.” She turned to her plants. “I think this is what you’re looking for,” she said and picked up a pot with a rose plant in it. “And, if any of my gardeners seem interested, I’ll send them your way.”

“Thank you,” Lily said. They paid Iris and headed back to the tram.

“And gardeners know mechanics,” Pauline said.

They returned to the mall and picked up the big box of iced coffees. The girl had nicely packed them into foil coated box with extra ice packs. They thanked her profusely and Lily gave her a big tip. They quickly rushed and got some special soap for the ducks.

Then, it was back to Fort Pinta. They changed their clothes in the tack room before picking up their horses and instead of riding, took a transport to the winery to save time.

They waved down the other girls and started handing out drinks.

“Oh this is heavenly,” Abigail groaned.

“Mana from the gods,” Jennifer said.

“Cold,” Regina moaned and pressed hers against her forehead.

Lily passed a drink to Linda with a raised brow.

“We’ve been putting up a temporary fence to keep the horses from wandering into the oil rigs,” Linda informed her.

Lily brandished the soap. “We’ve got soap for the ducks!”

Soon enough, while Linda and the others finished putting the very last bit of the fence in place, Lily and Pauline filled a tub with water and got to work gently washing the ducks with the special soap (Dawn.) Lily filled several big stable trough tubs and soon enough the poor things were splashing about in the clean water.

The other girls came and helped.

One splashed another and started a squealing water fight.

Now, you could employ some lazy clever tricks to make your passwords easier to remember, like recycling 1 password with few variations for every account (e.g. “wh1sk3r$_tumblr”, “wh1sk3r$_facebook”, “wh1sk3r$_bank_account”), but  this compromises security for convenience; if a hacker got access to, say, your Tumblr account, it’s not unreasonable to assume that they could figure out the passwords for a bunch of your other accounts by just guessing variations of your Tumblr password.

So I think we can all see why trying to commit everything to memory is not a great way to store passwords. What else we got?

Write it Down on Paper

Just keep, say, a little notebook for storing all your passwords in. Again, don’t have to worry about hackers getting access to your passwords if it’s not on any digital device!

However, you MIGHT have to worry about someone with physical access to your notebook getting access to your passwords (e.g. a nosy family member, or a burglar). And if you need to see your passwords outside your home (e.g. at uni), you’re gonna have to carry that password-book around with you at all times, exposing the notebook to more potential prying eyes (e.g. a stranger can peek over your shoulder when you happen to be opening the book, pickpocket steals it, someone mugs you on the street and happens to get the notebook in your backpack, or you simply forget your bag/jacket containing the notebook on the bus or something and anyone can take it!)

And paper isn’t exactly the most durable medium. Your notebook could get water-damaged (e.g. spill water on it, or it’s in your pocket when you get soaked in the rain) or burnt (e.g. house fire), rendering it unusable (though not necessarily unreadable; even a fairly soaked notebook might still be legible enough to recover your passwords from it).

Paper and pen might be a good-enough option for some people, but for me the inconvenience of needing to always have the notebook on your person when you need to see a password (and all the aforementioned risks this opens you up to) is unacceptable. Let’s see if we can do better.

Digital Notes with Cloud Sync

You can store you passwords in some note-taking app that syncs the notes with the server, so that even if you lose/break the original device you were taking the notes on (e.g. your laptop), the data will still be on the server (so you can recover the passwords by logging into your note-taking-app-account on another device). Bonus points if the app is available for multiple devices (so you can access your passwords on your phone as well, for added convenience) and allows you to password-protect notes (adding an extra level of security).

This is actually what I used to do for a long time; I used Apple’s Notes app (though there are other apps that can get the job done, like Evernote) to store all my passwords in a single note, which was itself password-protected (a password for my passwords!; a “master password”, so to speak). This “master password” was the only password I committed to memory (writing your master password down means that someone else can see it, which kind of defeats the purpose); all other passwords were contained in this 1 Note, which could only be accessed if you knew the master password.

What are the advantages of this approach (or, to be more specific, why did I choose it)? It strikes a good balance between security and convenience for me; Using the Notes app, I can easily access my passwords from any of my devices (Mac, iPhone, actually any device with an internet connection where I can sign into my iCloud account), but NOT without the master password. Even if someone unlocked my iPhone (or logged into my Mac, or my iCloud account), they would still need the master-password to read my password-protected notes.

So this approach minimises some of the problems the other methods had; my passwords aren’t going to be lost forever if I forget them/lose my device, I have the convenience of being able to access them from multiple devices AND I have the extra security of having them protected by the master-password.

Of course, there’s still the risk of forgetting the master-password. But if your app allows you to set a hint for the password-protected notes (like Apple Notes does), then this risk is somewhat lessened. [3]

However, this approach introduces a NEW risk that the previously-mentioned approaches didn’t have; hackers stealing all your passwords. Now that your notes can be accessed online, it is (in principle) possible for someone to see  them without needing physical access to your device; if someone hacks Apple and gets your master-password (or the notes themselves), your notes in the Notes app would be compromised. Now, you would HOPE that Apple (or whatever company your notes are stored with) is fairly difficult to hack, and that they follow good security practices like not storing passwords in plain text (so that the hackers, at worst, would only get a hashed version of your master-password, rather than the master-password itself). But given that companies in the past with even more incentive to be secure than Apple have followed shockingly poor practices (e.g. Equifax, a credit-monitoring company that stores credit card credentials, allowed anyone to login to an employee web portal by entering “admin” as the username & password [4]), I wouldn’t be surprised if their security was less-than-stellar.

Speaking of trust issues, it takes a lot of trust on the consumer’s part (i.e. you) to put sensitive personal information (such as passwords) in digital notes stored by a company. How do you know, for example, that employees at this company AREN’T reading your notes? Again, you would HOPE that said company follows good security practices whereby it’s not possible for anyone (even their employees) to read said notes without the master-password. But the point still stands; storing your passwords in an app/service provided by a company is like giving your neighbours a spare key to your house; in addition to trusting that your neighbours won’t lose/have the key stolen from them by malicious parties, you also have to trust that they themselves aren’t malicious (or won’t BECOME malicious) and misuse the key. 

Storing any kind of personal data (passwords, medical data, etc) with another party requires you to trust that that party is neither incompetent nor malicious enough to lose/abuse said data.

So, what would I recommend then?

Password Managers

Password managers are apps specifically designed to store passwords. They’re like password-protected-notes on steroids; they use the same “master-password-to-protect-all-your-other-passwords” concept that we had with the digital notes, just with a lot of extra security in how your passwords are stored. 

I’ll dedicate my next blog post to them password managers, so I won’t say much more about them here other than that they are my preferred way of storing passwords now, being just as convenient as ordinary-note-taking-apps whilst beefing-up security.

I hadn’t logged onto tumblr on my laptop in ages, so I had to reset my password. In doing so, I entered my more recent Gmail thinking it was the correct one for this account, which lead me to the delightful and strange rediscovery of my secret in the closet trans blog I made six years ago:

I had COMPLETELY forgotten about it. I just scrolled through all of it and was strangely taken back to then. I had an Americorps job that I SUCKED at (granted, it also sort of sucked and had it’s own issues) that I ended up technically getting fired from, I had GREAT hair that has now since gone which was painful to see again, but most of all, I saw that I managed to actually look happy in the pictures I posted and looking back now, that was perhaps the only time I truly felt happy back them. It feels like much longer than six years since I transitioned. If I could go back to baby 24-year-old me, I’d love to tell him that it was going to be okay and that he was going to end up in grad school like he always wanted. I would have also told him to not go on a second date with that girl he met on OkCupid, but that might have veered him off the path of making it to grad school, so maybe that was for the best - I would have just told him to buckle the fuck up for the ride ahead.  

I’ve come a long, long way in six years. I’ve still got a lot of shit to figure out, but despite the fact that it’s come with some significant sacrifices, I don’t regret transitioning. I’ve been having some complicated feelings about it lately, mostly because I’m doing research about trans stuff for my MA and it’s been stirring up some... feelings about it. Looking back at myself, the only thing I miss is my hair, which seems so vain, but losing your hair before 30 when you didn’t expect to is pretty awful. But that aside, when I look back at 24-year-old me, I can feel it in my bones how much I knew I didn’t want to grow into an old woman. I don’t regret or hide my female past. In fact, I wish I was able to better integrate it into my current life and future, without making everything about my identity about being trans. Maybe in the future that will be easier, as people of trans experience are even more visible and the fact that we exist becomes even more “normal,” as much as I hate that word. 

Anyway. Please enjoy the secret musings of my closeted past, while politely ignoring my previous worship of Chris Hardwick! At the time, he genuinely was a role model of what I thought was a nicer, more “progressive” nerd masculinity I was aspiring too. I suppose you should always be weary of your idols, especially when they’re men - OOF. I’m super happy I found it because I genuinely had forgotten about it. never played it, was going to purchase Air Conditioner origins from cd keys for a number of $ for the Xbone but will DL this as well for travel play on the laptop.

Origins is respectable. Black Flag was the very best one prior to Origins. Hits and misses in between with Rogue, Distribute and Unity.

Why do you believe it isn't an appropriate Air Conditioning? Just because they included marine aspects does not make it any less Air Conditioner than AC2 or AC3.

Though uplay begins itself, pointlessly, whenever I play specific ubisoft video games on steam. So that's the 2 times I ever need to see it's existence.

The game does not support 21:9 screens out of package. I discover this rather unacceptable.

You need to change your.exe files with patch.exe in order to work with these screens.

I need to rant.

I got fed up with Skype. That’s it, you heard me. Got fed up.

With SKYPE.

(Long story below)

So this entire ordeal started when I wanted to play a game (not telling you what) with my friends. We decided “okay, 7.15 pm”.

And then I’m typing away, and think to myself “Oh it’s already 7.15″

And then I realize...

I forgot my Skype details. Completely.

All my Skype stuff is on my old laptop, Windows 8. I’m currently using a new laptop, Windows 10 (didn’t even use the in-built Skype), so basically I had to go through the “reset your password via email” process.

And here is where my rage-inducing adventure begins.

I had no idea what my username was. So I begin with my most-used and current email. You probably already know it, but I’m just going to use some pseudo name for it. brainexplosion@fmail.com (it’s not realy, I made it up, so if anyone happens to use this email. please don’t bombard them.)

Okay, so the entire process begins. I proved I owned it, checked my main email, found the code, typed it in, and typed in my password. Two times for confirmation, one for logging in.

Right at that moment, I just forget.

Completely forgot the password I just set TEN SECONDS AGO.

So I repeat the password reset process AGAIN. Type, type, press enter, check email, type, type THREE TIMES. Wasted around 5 minutes.

And THEN when I log in, I find all my contacts gone. None, nil, zero, zilch, EMPTY.

A blank empty white canvas for you to stare at.

Obviously, something was wrong. I Googled hysterically, trying to find an answer on why they all just vanished. Some said it’d take 5-6 hours to re-sync, others said it was due to an outdated version. I get stumped.

“Sssshhhi--”

And then I remember: “AHA!”

I had another email account. “I probably used that one,” I thought. This’ll be poyopoyo@coldmail.com for now.(again it’s fake, so if this really exists, please ignore it, and sorry.)

And yes, another email means another account went unremembered. So a SECOND go at password reset. Press ‘reset’, enter email, check email, enter code, enter new password THREE times again, log in.

Around 5 minutes gone again.

Annnnnd boy I was wrong.

IT’S ALSO EMPTY. (almost)

At this point I was cursing like a sailor. If I had a dollar for every curse, I’d have enough to buy myself three meals worth of Swensen’s food.

I’m scratching my head and I’m just at a loss for words. “How could this (happen to me) be? I’ve made my mistake--”

oh.

THEN I remembered I had my old laptop with the account I usually use (I abandoned it for probably 2-3 years, can’t remember.) This one will be “headexplosion”.

I log in, and then oops I forgot -- my laptop was dying.

I ran out of so much patience, it was way thinner than paper. I got REAL pissed and marched around the house (almost) with my foul mouth “where the hell is my charger”

...yeah, instead of ‘hell’, I used the f-bomb. A LOT.

Spent a good 10 minutes looking for it. Gave up, sat down at my new computer--oh would you look at that--MY OLD LAPTOP CHARGE SITTING AT MY FEET.

I was ready to accept the idea of divine pranks.

I charge my old laptop, log in, and oh lookie my old account, still there. I rejoice--

It logs out on me. BECAUSE I RECENTLY CHANGED MY PASSWORD.

I lose all the details that could potentially help me in recovering my memory or my account.

I could smash my laptops if I wanted to but the only thing that kept me from doing so was Fantasia’s Clair de Lune (Debussy) playing in the background.

I angrily gulp my water away as I sit there helplessly fuming clouds of rage for who knows how long: at this point I look at the clock -- 8:30 pm.

I wasted my time resetting passwords, checking three separate emails (a third one in case but it was for naught) - wasted at least an hour and a quarter because I forgot.

Third password reset. Grumbling as I go. Logged in.

And then I take a look at my old account on my old laptop. Went to details, checked the email associated with it.

“Username: headexplosion” “brainexplosion@fmail.com“

...what.

Didn’t I just used that address for my first attempt earlier? Huh? What? Why? どうして？

I got fed up, now knowing that using your e-mail as a username doesn’t necessarily take me to the account associated with that e-mail.

In other words, what happened was this:

(Old, main) Username: headexplosion E-mail: brainexplosion@fmail.com

(The one I tried first) Username: brainexplosion@fmail.com E-mail: brainexplosion@fmail.com

I had unknowingly created a new, separate account instead of logging into my new one.

I wanted to cry. Well, I wasn’t that sad, but you know what I mean.

And I think to myself “Finally, the tribulation has ceased. I can log in--”

“...”

“...oh for crying out--”

I needed to reset my old account password.

A FOURTH TIME.

I forgot to tell you I misspelled my password countless times in between each attempt.

I’m typing this and it’s almost 9pm. Nearly two hours wasted.

EDIT: I accidentally submitted everything above this line. I’m in such a mess right now.

Re-type, re-type, enter e-mail, check said e-mail-- enter ihavenothing@fmail.com instead-- repeat said process yadda yadda yadda, enter password three times for a fourth final time.

All my contacts are intact upon logging in.

I sigh. With relief.

Post-tantrum phase.
