While I think there are many many issues with adapting today's scene into a sultry, "Lucy invites him in because she wants it" scene (the victim blaming being a big part of it)....
I also think it fundamentally shifts the tone of the whole story. Lucy's memorandum feels like one of the key moments of actual horror up to this point.
It isn't an implied sort of horror that we've had so far (even the Demeter deaths happen off-screen). it's the wolf breaking through her bedroom window. It's her dead mother's body on top of her pinning her in place. It's finding the maids drugged and realizing she's alone.
It's seeing this young woman utterly convinced that she is going to die and writing out one last note for whoever finds her.
Changing this scene really blunts the horror of the book on the whole because it takes away the pure, unadulterated terror of being alone in a house with the dead and a mysterious thing that wants to kill you.

Headcanon time! Since I finally remembered to draw something for one
Whenever Dust isn't well and is just staying in bed, Horror brings him tomato soup. It's close enough to ketchup that it's kinda comforting for him but also just different enough that it doesn't make him spiral into thinking about his past.
In return, whenever Horror is holed up sick in bed, Dust makes him toast. It's the only thing he really knows how to make without burning it but toast is Horror's comfort food so he's always happy for it.

Very personal problem: increasingly out of patience with the audience being always so desperate to laugh! Laugh! Laugh!

The fandom and plot line might be all over the place, but at least they dont add 2 sets of ears to their humanoid characters.

What if Tara secretly hates horror movies (all of them, including the elevated ones, although she's better at taking those compared to the gory type) and is more of a Studio Ghibli and other comfort movies kind of girl? Horror movies make her nervous. Everyone else in her friend group is into horror, though, so Tara learned to pretend to be ok with it so she wouldn't stand out (you need to fit in if you want to keep your friends, Tara believes). The only one who knows about Tara's secret passion is Sam. On movie nights, Sam will sacrifice herself to choose a movie she knows Tara loves. Indiana Jones, The Breakfast Club, My Neighbor Totoro... Everyone else (lovingly) makes fun of Sam for being such a loser and enjoying these boring movies. Sam herself is bored to death watching them as well. But it's all worth it when Tara snuggles up to her a little extra close and fully relaxes into Sam during the movie.
I fucking LOVE this thought. Tara likes Ghibli, she likes Disney, she likes light-hearted and silly cartoons, she likes low-stakes and happy stories. But everyone around her likes horror, even Sam. (At least Chad watches Spongebob with her sometimes.)
It starts with wanting to spend time with Sam after their father leaves. Sam's been pulling away, and she'll do anything to be with her. Sam's sceptical when Tara asks if she can watch with her, but lets her cuddle into her side and hide behind her arm anyway. It's one of the few times she gets to be close to her anymore.
As she begins to spend more and more time with Amber, she ends up watching more and more horror movies, because that's all Amber watches. And Mindy. Even Wes! Wes who used to be scared of his own shadow! Tara feels a little betrayed by him for that. But these people are all she has now. She has to keep them happy, she can't hate what they love. Even if they give her nightmares.
There's no horror movies for a while. Their life was a horror movie. It was a bit much, even for Mindy. But when they get to New York, movie nights start again, and it begins again.
Usually, Tara's able to hide it better. But she's had a long day and she argued with Sam earlier and she just... wants to be comforted. So she plonks herself down next to her sister when Mindy cues up the movie, even though they (she) are mad at each other. She can feel Sam eyeing her out of the corner of her eye, but she ignores it and leans into her.
Sam feels the way Tara jumps at the sight on the screen, the way she flinches when there's a scream, and she lifts her arm up and around her sister's shoulder, pulling her in even closer. Tara hated horror movies as a child, but she always forced herself to watch them just to hang out with Sam, she knows. She's beginning to think that hasn't changed.
Next movie night, Sam speaks up when they're choosing a movie. "Home Alone," Sam calls out. Mindy looks a little disgusted. "Home Alone, are you serious."
"Yup. That's what I want to watch. None of your boring horror movie nonsense." Tara's eyes flick between the two of them.
"Home Alone is a classic," Chad pipes in.
Mindy turns to Tara, who holds her hands up. "Unbelievable," she mutters, defeated.
"I got ya," Sam murmurs as she wraps an arm around Tara and leans back so they can cuddle.

speaking of horror you guy should watch funny games, please please please. I watched it a few weeks ago, didn't really get it/enjoy it, and then a few days ago I was thinking about it and it finally clicked with me. and I was like Oh!!! this is great actually!!! and I'm probs gonna rewatch it soon. my selling point for u is it's like scream but for pretentious adults.

My one friend always rags on PG13 horror movies as though they can't be good bc they can't show a lot of blood or will have tamer off screen kills or w.e bc they're not rated R but then every time we suggest watching SAW, she'll make an excuse like nah that's too much gore for no reason. Like????? Girl. Pick a struggle.
