Hi Mike! Just wondering about the wonderful Katie Parker. Since she’s been a part of the Flanaverse for a pretty long time, I was wondering how she joined Absentia and which of her roles in your work is YOUR favourite? Personally I can’t get over how good she was as Poppy.

I first met Katie back in - I want to say 2008? Somewhere in there. She was friends with my girlfriend at the time and soon we were friends too. She was an actor struggling to find footing in LA and used to come over for movie nights and crash on our couch, and as time went by I started to think of her as a sister. I was working full-time as an editor on reality TV shows and trying to get something started. I wrote Absentia as a project for my friends to star in, so Katie's role was custom tailored just for her. Same with Courtney, Dave, Morgan and Justin. We were all living in LA and had similar dreams, but were all struggling to pay the rent and this was a chance to make something together that might get noticed.

We had a blast making that little movie, and it actually did what we all hoped it would do - it kicked open some doors, and led to Oculus being picked up by Trevor Macy at Intrepid Pictures (who has produced everything I've made since).

Katie had a small cameo in Oculus, playing the phone store clerk who sells Brenton Thwaites his first cell phone after being released from a lifetime in a mental institution. The scene was sweet and Katie was great, but it wasn't in the final cut of the film. I think it may be available on the blu-ray but I'm not sure to be honest. Katie remained a great friend, but there weren't really roles in the following movies that were a perfect fit. When I got my first shot at making TV, though, I really wanted her to be in The Haunting of Hill House. She auditioned to play Joey, the recovering addict who befriends Luke. The studio wanted to go another way with the part, and so I decided to write the new character of Poppy Hill for Katie instead, and she absolutely crushed it. It was meant to be.

After that, she was kind enough to take a smaller role in a much bigger film, portraying Silent Sarey in Doctor Sleep.

When it came time to make The Haunting of Bly Manor, I had a fun idea for Katie and my wife Kate to play the doomed sisters in one of our coolest episodes. It was exciting for Hill House fans to see them together, but it was really terrific for me to have so much trust in two actors who could make such a huge impact in one episode.

After Bly, Katie joined us for The Midnight Club, and has a wonderful role (and does some of her absolute best work) in the upcoming The Fall of the House of Usher. Just before those, though, she joined us at the Saturn Awards in LA, where we had an impromptu Absentia reunion with my sibling Jamie Flanagan and my dear friend Doug Jones, both of whom acted in that little movie all those years ago. It was really neat to see everyone in the same place again, and think back about how far we've come since those days filming in that pee-covered tunnel.

Katie is a phenomenal actor, and I was lucky enough to work with her at the very beginning of my career, and now five more time since. She's unique among the family of actors that I've accumulated over the years, in that she was there from the very beginning. We sat in a tiny apartment in Glendale dreaming of making movies, worrying about paying our rent, and trying to figure out how the hell to get where we wanted to go. I'm proud to know her, proud to collaborate her, and proud to call her family. I expect you'll see her in many, many more Intrepid productions for years to come.

i fully agree with your response, please never apologise for going on tangents because i'm always intrigued to hear more of your perspective & insight!

i recall the influx of kaylors specifically during the midnights era — the memes were hilarious, but you can tell that things can go wrong and disrupt the flow of the river when people start going about kaylorism the wrong way: expecting taylor and/or karlie to come out, spamming karlie's instagram with taylor references, etc. — such actions that put the two in an uncomfortable spot.

being a gaylor or kaylor is not at all easy to say the least. while it's up to people how they want to approach this community with what sort of goals, i personally spectate the chaos unfold like a scholar or an archaeologist examining traces of history left by our ancestors to get a glimpse into their life rather than a tv show viewer rooting for the couple to end up together or a detective wanting to catch the culprit; for me, as a kaylor & gaylor, it's much easier for me and on my mental health & day-to-day life to engage with this community through the lens of what the past has to tell us rather than speculating what will happen in the future. spares you a lotta heartbreak, i learned the hard way.

there's no "right" or "wrong" way to be a gaylor as long as you're respectful to everybody involved. regardless of how the folklore deepens in the mainstream media, i will always appreciate us 22 kaylors on tumblr having something special to cherish :)

i think there are many people who have taken a similar approach to you in terms of how to interact with or engage with kaylor and i think can be a really effective approach. i think that, maybe there was a time or era for taylor where she might have been specifically angling towards some sort of big goal, and while maybe she still is in some capacity, she is simply in a different season of life now and i have been trying to give her evolving approach to celebrity more grace and acknowledgment.

😆 i’ve definitely learned the hard way too, but, i think it gives some of us unique insight.. informs our perspective. i hope to grow with taylor and karlie.

you know, i remember at the beginning of her surprise song speech on glendale night one, before mirrorball, taylor talked about how she craves our (the audience’s) love and i thought about mastermind and the line “no one wanted to play with me as a little kid so i’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since to make them love me and make it seem effortless” and i remember thinking, i think part of easter egging and getting us to look and laugh at her is notably important to her, but how that must be getting increasingly harder as the world has become more and more volatile at the same time as she has taken on more and more personal and weighty and complex goals..

during anti-hero, when she walked right in front of where pro and i were standing, my schemes of making my eye sign wink at her melted and my cellphone dropped and all i wanted to do was reach out to her in that moment and tell her, i love you unconditionally. and i wanted to tell her that i don’t ever want her to think that she needs to give us consistency or clarity in order for us to want to stick around. of course, it was only a few precious seconds so… all that happened is we both got to sing “i’m the problem it’s me” to one another but… in some weird way it felt like the epitome of it. of all this. to be able to smile and laugh and say, hey, we’re not perfect but we both know it. why not make a lark of it?

i know the symbolism of the taylor on the big screen screaming to be noticed and how it represents this idea of taylor the presenter being focused on while taylor the gay person couldn’t been bigger yet gets ignored time and time again, and i get that and i agree with that, i think that’s very much her intention. but there was something about being present for the physically real taylor in that moment, trying to be every version of herself at once, that i’ve tried to keep in my mind when thinking about how i want to kaylor going forward.

alice was the youngest, second and final to her parents annabelle and nicholas slater. she grew up mostly uncaring and just wanting to have fun with her brother and later on her friends. as she grew she just got really attached to having people around and it'd scare her to be alone too much til she started her work. her online work kept her busy in her alone time and she started to enjoy doing that mostly alone.

growing up in new orleans had her brother traveling and hiking a lot. as they got older they and learned more they went ghost hunting for fun and really just had a close connection together. she'd never do anything without her brother knowing. she stayed as close to him as possible, which has remained to this day even though moving and jobs keep them apart. calls, texts and videos never do. alice lived in glendale with her brother for a while once they were ready to leave home. they still would visit their parents. however, soon the time came for her to be on her own again. so she moved to where she is now, it's not easy but she's made it work thus far.

"Did you double check-"

"They're all asleep, Wammawink. Relax." Horse toddled out of the grass with a roll of her eyes. The armor and reins she'd once bore proudly hung awkwardly around her cartoonish body now; the chestplate almost brushed the ground, no longer held up by a muscular stature, while her saddle was just a little too big and wiggly. The reins didn't quite fit into the curve of her muzzle, leading them dangling like too big pants. "Honestly, do we have to do this like this? I feel like an embarrassment."

Wammawink shushed her, rubbing her muzzle soothingly. "Oh, babygirl, never. You just look so handsome in your armor."

"I look better when I fit in them," she tsked, but beamed under her praise. "Back home, Rider would always show off to the village girls by having me walk past them, all shiny and stuff. I got lots of apples."

Wammawink led her over to the river, happily settling in with her front hooves dipped into the cool ripples. Horse loafed down next to her, looking up at the stars with vague interest. "Your village must have been very proud," she hummed, but moved on before the topic became too somber- they both knew how hard it was to talk about home as a place. "I sure hope I can meet this Rider person of yours, Horse. She sounds very nice."

"She's my person, you know?" Horse asked, rhetorical. She'd realized pretty quickly that the centaurs didn't quite understand. "I dunno how the rift will work, but I hope you'll get to see her before I go home."

"Oh, let's not talk about goodbyes tonight." Wammawink leaned on her side, running pudgy pink fingers through her fur. "Sometimes, when I feel sad, I like to imagine that the war is over, and you wouldn't have to fight anymore."

"That'd be... pretty anticlimactic."

"Hmm, maybe. But then you and Rider would want to stay, and find new adventures. And we would all travel together. Can we just... imagine that?"

Horse hesitated. She didn't want to give Wammawink the idea that might be reality. But she also really did like Wammawink, and the herd, and maybe even a little piece of her liked Centaurworld. "I'm not great at imagination games, babygirl."

"That's okay," she said, fingers tightening. "I'm the best at making up happy endings."

She leaned over to nuzzle her chin. It was something she'd done plenty of times with Rider, and even with the awkward angle it garnered a chuckle out of the llamataur. "We'd follow the stars," she added hesitantly, blooming under the full force of Wammawink's smile. "Zulius would probably try to give Rider a makeover. Glendale would steal some more silverware off Durpleton's plate while he played tic-tac-toe with her. And every night we'd share gigglecakes while Tail tried to make Ched laugh for real."

"Ah, what a wonderful ending," Wammawink said, eyes fluttering shut. "Tell it to me again?"

29 Hours - a short story

synopsis: In the midst of Lena and Nevada trying to establish their own roots in Chicago Lena stumbles across a promising lead that could finally reunite her with her family, embarking the two of them on an impromptu road trip.

They’d found them.

Lena’s family was back in Glendale—or so they believed. The process of gathering all the documents they needed in order to be properly re-assimilated into society had led her to a faded, old address on her birth certificate she suspected she had been too young to know, the only other in her memory being the one in Chicago, which they’d found splintered, dusty and empty upon arrival there. The promise Nevada had made to her to find them had gotten lost among their mess of loose ends and their laborious efforts of building a foundation for themselves, but now that things were beginning to settle Nevada was finally able to fulfill it, and was glad to. She was also terrified. She’d barely been out of prison for a year, and employed for less than half of that time, and the ink on their lease was practically still wet enough to smudge. Though things had settled, Nevada felt that the slightest shift could cause everything to fall out from underneath them, which is why a cross-country trip to a place not even guaranteed to keep Lena’s family didn’t seem the best for their stability, but Nevada had kept her waiting long enough, she thought.

In their reconstruction of a new life together, Lena had also been caught in a slow state of recollection, memories of a life that seemed so far in the past materializing from cloudy static to clear color from the simplest of triggers. Just days before the passing scent of a hearty stew from a neighbor’s open window sent her ten years into the past and into the kitchen with her father, where she heard him swear for the first time after slicing into his finger instead of a carrot. Setting eyes upon that old address brought her to a memory she couldn’t understand why she remembered so vividly, of her father briefly mentioning to her when she was a child that they had lived with her grandparents for a while when she was born, before living in the home that she’d left most of herself in. Albeit the conclusion that they—her father and brother—just had to have moved back there, and that they couldn’t be anywhere else in the world, was loosely and desperately founded, the sun was rising on the final minutes of their 29 hour drive.

The truck’s weak heater had been on the entire ride and was raising the stench of the weary leather interior and started to burn the inside of Lena’s nostrils. She turned her nose towards the window for relief, not getting much. She was also starting to get really, really queasy, wanting to attribute it to the lengthy car ride rather than her bubbling doubts. Nevada had been eyeing her the entire drive to make sure she was comfortable, a small part of her also wanting to make sure she didn’t vanish into thin air while she wasn’t looking. Though completely impossible and ridiculous and by all means had no chance of happening, the wavering air around Lena lately made it seem like to the most irrational bit of Nevada that it could happen. In the days leading up to their trip Lena had grown quieter and quieter despite her initial excitement upon discovering the lead, adding onto the nerves that Nevada was attempting to dispel through her wiggling and tapping fingertips against the wheel.

“Gettin’ hot?” she asked, not waiting for a response, redirectioning the vent nearest to Lena toward herself. Lena smiled gently at the gesture.

“I’m ok,” she rested her head against the window. Nevada licked her lips, trying not to pry, giving her attention back to the road. They were only a handful of turns away now. Lena slid a hand onto Nevada’s knee, hoping to convince, and hoping to console both their nerves.

“Hope I’m not under-dressed,” Nevada said after a while, trying to lighten things. A laugh slid out of Lena’s nose and she gave her knee a soft squeeze. Instead of lightening things the weight of Lena’s doubts finally broke her, and she let out a long, full breath.

“God, I hope they’re here. I hope they’re here,” She pulled her palms over her eyes then through her hair. Nevada’s gut quaked for her. She pulled her hand back onto her leg, holding it there for the rest of the ride.

“They will be,” she reassured.

The west coast winter was much softer than the daggering cold of Illinois, but Nevada still wriggled against the air as they got out of the truck. They would have passed the house entirely if Lena hadn’t quickly spotted the vinyl numbers on the mailbox, then the matching plaque set against the narrow brick wall beside the front door. The house looked drenched in sepia, as if they were stepping into a photograph as they ascended the few steps leading to the porch, the brick and wooden door and concrete beneath them and glass all coated in a layer of time, as if it had indeed served multiple generations. There was no driveway, which gave neither of them any time to do any last mental preparations; as soon as they had parked they were face to face with, for Lena, a home her mind couldn’t claim but her heart panged to, and for Nevada, another potential trial, or a relief, or at worst, an end, a devil between her ears told her.

Neither of them spoke. Nevada wanted to grab for Lena’s hand but it was already clutching the sleeve of her jacket. She could feel her trembling. She took a breath and knocked for her. After a moment they both could see a shape moving to and fro behind the bevel of the peephole. A man’s hesitant yet hefty voice called out, asking who it was. Lena’s eyes prayed up to Nevada for an answer, who nudged her on with a look of half certainty.

“Lena,” she shuttered out.

They both waited. For a second she wasn’t sure, but Lena began hearing syllables and rhythms of a language she thought she had forgotten, the voice going from a whisper to a shout from behind the door, footsteps waning and returning after what seemed like an eternity before the door finally opened, warmth blowing past the two figures behind it directly through the two girls. Lena’s insides swelled and overflowed all at once when she was met with her father’s face, and then her grandmother’s from behind his shoulders, who immediately began to sob. Nevada felt Lena’s entire weight on her arm as she clung harder, as if she herself now was trying not to vanish into thin air. Her father reached out through the door frame, pleading to touch something material, and the second his fingertips grazed Lena’s shoulder, the two of them nearly collapsed into each other’s arms.

The process was repeated once her brother emerged from farther in the house, he and Lena killing each other with their embrace. For what seemed like another eternity Nevada watched from a respectful distance, tucked into herself, as Lena returned to a reality long lost, one she was convinced she would never see or live again. Her face grew solemn and her head dizzy with feelings of tenderness and complete and total dread.

They sat until dusk doing nothing but talking, all the time spent barely on the past year, nothing of the decade Lena had lost even covered yet, aside from how her family ended up back in California. Her grandmother began to weep again at the idea of her self declared selfishness stretching the distance between them and Lena; her wanting her son back home after he’d lost his wife and daughter, her fear of him being next, of their bloodline dwindling, her horrors of a dangerous and foreign land she’d hoped for her family to thrive in coming to fruition, picking them off one by one. She and Lena’s father pleaded for her forgiveness for transgressions that Lena didn’t recognize, for not saving her, for not having the omniscence to shield her from the guaranteed trouble of the world. Lena had never protested so loud and hard in her life. By the end of the night her spirit was exhausted and dry, yet simultaneously so, so unbelievably full.

Her family had never even thought to ask who her escort was until dinner, which ended up being takeout rather than the feast her grandmother had planned for this exact moment. Nevada, grateful at first, ended up confessing to every sin she committed anyway, her food gone cold by the time she finished. That night, they granted each other salvation, and answered their own prayers.

Lena regained the past decade in the days that followed—her family made sure of it—how her brother hadn’t made a single friend or played baseball since she was gone and her father his bass, how desolation had flushed itself into all four walls of their home, rotting and decimating it beyond its years. They showed her a room completely made up of her adolescence that had been awaiting her return: the same white wooden dresser holding her freshman wardrobe, a pair of pale and undersized ballet slippers hanging from the foot of her bed, that bed dawning the quilt she made with her grandmother when she was 12, its comfort she’d longed for probably more than anything else. She and Nevada could barely fit underneath it, or in the bed for that matter, but Lena had never looked more at peace to her.

Lena’s family and their kindness was enough to smother Nevada’s worries at first, but as she lay crooked in her lover’s old bed, the iron frame creaking with any breath of hers that was too heavy, it crept back up to the surface, glazed over her eyes, stiffening her awake. Nevada tried to soften her breaths and thus the creaking, her self-awareness coupled with gape in her gullet starting to suffocate her. She was hyperventilating, Lena waking in a flurry to calm her.

Nevada gave lax sips to the glass of ice water Lena had gotten her, the two of them sat on the floor against the side of the bed. The hand Lena had massaging Nevada’s shoulder crept up her neck and across her cheekbone, her thumb fondly caressing its deep crevice. Nevada’s eyes remained glued to the floor. Thankfully no one else in the house had been disturbed.

“What’s up?” Lena’s voice sounded like the night. Nevada folded into her touch, trying to find the words. Over the past few days Lena was beaming with light she’s never known was within her. She started feeling dizzy again.

“Hey,” Lena adjusted to face her, her fingers tracing her jawline, then the curve of her outer ear, then holding her right cheek entirely, forcing her to meet her eye when she didn’t respond.

Nevada stammered before finding them. “Is this ok?”

Lena paused, confused at first.

“What do you mean?”

“This,” Nevada eyed the perimeter of the room.

Lena blinked at her.

“Of course it’s ok,” she was now kneeling in front of her, holding her by both arms. The wooden floor whined underneath them.

A corner of Nevada’s mouth turned up into a weak grin. Lena thought her eyes shined like pearls through the room’s blackness. “Are you happy?”

More than she knew she was capable of being. More than she thought she would ever deserve. But she knew what she meant.

“Yeah,” she said after hesitating. It sounded like another confession.

Nevada ached, smiling harder, her eyes glossier. She took in Lena’s pleading expression, and how the moonlight tinged her cheeks a sweet blue, her curtain of curls swallowing both their arms as she pulled her face closer to hers, pressing her hard, smile into Lena’s now quivering lips. She kissed her long and dourly before pulling her back into bed with her.

Lena pooled into her side and also ached; she knew what she meant. Her being happy here in Nevada’s mind meant being less so with her, and right now it was the truth. Lena had grown to love Nevada so much it could have killed her, and it certainly felt like now that it would, but it had been years, and this was her family. She knew Nevada was different now and would understand this, but even so her heart felt full of daggers.

“You can stay here,” she muttered, her voice cracking.

“No, I can’t, Lena. I can’t,” she said to the ceiling. She felt Lena squirm beside her, her grip around her waist tightening desperately before she sat up, straddling her. Lena looked down at her, watching her somber smile break down within their silence.

“You’ve waited long enough,” she said.

The next morning was much warmer than Nevada had felt in a while. She was glad Lena would be getting a little more sunshine again. She loaded the last of her luggage into the flatbed, it halved in size since their arrival, and went ahead and warmed up the motor. Lena stood a few steps away on the sidewalk, holding herself. Nevada glided towards her with her hands in her coat pockets with another phony, stupid looking smile, Lena holding back tears. She slid her arms between the slit of Nevada’s, smothering herself into her neck and chest. Nevada welcomed her for a final time, running her hands across her waist and back feverishly, clinging to her tightly and endlessly, in one last attempt to make the two of them one again. She felt her tears crawling into the divots of her collarbone, peeling her back for a kiss.

“Can you just give me time?” Lena whispered, smudging her tear stains deeper into Nevada’s crew neck. “Please?”

Nevada wanted to kick herself for making her beg, for making her cry at all. She hadn’t even expected the option in all her panic and all-or-nothingness. Lena knew this was different about her now, too, that she had learned patience within the past few years, hoping she could give it to her.

She didn’t have to hope, and Nevada didn’t have to even think.

“Yeah. Yeah, I can do that.”

Jesus Christ, why did it have to be Debbie and not Chris? I would take Chris over Debbie every day, at least he doesn’t judge me when I get my rent money in a few days late. I’m a poor college student paying the rent by herself, give me a break.

“What’s up?” I ask, swinging the front door to my apartment open.

“Hi Y/N,” Debbie sends me a fake smile. “I’m just here to remind you that your rent is due in a week.”

“I have it written down, Debbie.”

“Oh,” she actually appears to be shocked. Is this bitch serious? Does she really think that little of me? Well, I haven’t given her much faith to have in me, though... “Well, just don’t forget to give it to me or Chris.”

“I know.”

She gives me another fake smile. “Have a great night, Y/N.”

“Yep, bye.” I close my door, rolling my eyes at the judgemental, middle-aged woman. “Fucking bitch,” I whisper under my breath, making my way to the living room to take a seat on the couch.

Okay, I do see why she’s concerned, though. I have been turning my rent money in late over the past couple of months but that’s just because of my lack of employment. I’m struggling to find a job that’s flexible enough that will work with my class schedule since I’m taking more credits next semester than I ever have before. This means that I have to use the little money I have saved up for rent. That money’s running out fast, though, so I have to find a job right now.

I scroll through the list on Indeed, sighing at all of the minimum wage jobs. None of those will be able to help me afford my apartment and I can’t move even if I wanted to. Every apartment in Glendale is expensive as hell and this apartment is close enough to my college that I’m able to walk to class instead of having to spend money on a car or a bus pass.

I apply for a couple of jobs anyway, figuring that I could always pick up two minimum wage jobs, despite how much I would hate it, and reluctantly check my email.

The government sent me an email an hour ago letting me know that my FAFSA has been submitted and I groan out loud, resting my head in my hands. How am I supposed to save money to pay back my student loans when I don’t even have the money to afford an apartment now?

I really have no clue what I’m going to do and all I want to do right now is drink away my troubles. I check my phone to see how long ago my friends told me they were on their way to come over to get ready and pick me up to go out to the club.

This is a long overdue night out.

I scroll through Instagram until there’s a knock at my apartment door and screams letting me know that it’s locked. I roll my eyes, standing up from my spot at the kitchen table and making my way towards the front door, opening it.

“I know it’s locked, dumbasses, Debbie was just here and I didn’t want her to knock the door open asking for rent money again,” I explain, letting my friends in.

“Just offer to eat her out instead of paying for rent next month,” Tyler recommends.

“Can you imagine? Debbie would pass out if you said that to her,” Besty giggles before walking down the hall towards my bedroom.

“Is that what you’re wearing to the club?” I eye Tyler’s T-shirt and sweatpants.

“Girl, did you really just ask me that?” He practically buries me with his eyes as we follow our other friend to my bedroom.

“What are you wearing tonight, Y/N?” Betsy asks, pulling random articles of clothing out of my closet.

“Why? Are you trying to figure out which of my clothes you want to wear?” I stand in front of the closet with her.

She sends me a cheeky smile. “Maybe.”

“I’m definitely wearing this top,” I pull out the gold crop top. “And then some ripped jeans and my metallic blue vans. You can choose anything except those things.”

“Thank you,” she sings, pulling out clothes to look at.

I get dressed, throw my hair in a messy high ponytail and rest a gold chain around my neck.

“Who’s paying for drinks tonight?” I ask, walking into my bathroom to start my makeup.

“I’ll pay if you do my eyeliner,” Tyler offers, lying on my bed and playing on his phone since he finished getting dressed a long time ago.

“Get over here, then,” I order, pulling out my liquid eyeliner. I do his makeup carefully, directing his gaze towards the mirror to examine it.

“It looks great, thanks, babe,” Tyler sends himself a kiss in the mirror and I laugh, beginning my own makeup.

Two hours later we’re ready to go and stumbling down the sidewalk, some alcohol already in our systems from pregaming.

We’re all buzzed but not drunk yet, wanting to wait until we at least get to the club so we would be able to walk there. The bouncer lets us in the club with one glance, noting our slutty clothing and deciding we’re good enough to be let into the high class club.

The pounding music shakes the tiled flooring as we shoot straight to the bar, Tyler ordering us several glasses of shots and a variety of mixed drinks.

“Put it on my tab,” he yells over the bass to the bartender as she sets the tray down in front of us. I can barely hear his words over the feeling of the alcohol burning my throat as I take the shot of Jack Daniels.

“Dibs,” I call, reaching for the Sex on the Beach. The liquid sloshes out of the drink a little as I pick it up, the alcohol already taking over my system.

Betsy lets out a whine in protest at the same time she reaches for the Old Fashioned so I ignore her, directing my attention to the dance floor.

It’s honestly busier than I expected, which shouldn’t be surprising since it’s a popular spot for people to go to on a Saturday night. The dance floor is practically overflowing with people but if anything, it makes me want to jump in and go on a treasure hunt for the cutest boy to hook up with. I need a break from thinking and an attractive man is the perfect solution for that.

My vision sways as I stand up from the stool, setting the empty glass on the bar’s countertop before dancing my way over to the crowd. I enter besides a group of cute girls and they drunkenly invite me to dance with them, so there’s just five of us girls stumbling around and yelling together.

When I’m exhausted, I let out a loud giggle and move towards the center of the dance floor, closing my eyes and throwing my hands up in the air in carelessness and freedom. My body moves along to the beat of the music, the liquor swimming through my veins keeping me from caring about how I appear.

Soft hands press to my bare waist, firm enough to keep me in place but loose enough to let me go if I want to leave the grip. I let them rest, leaning back to rest my back on his chest. With my eyes still closed and the lyrics to the song belting from the bottom of my lungs, I wrap my arms around the stranger’s neck, playing with the long hair at the bottom of his neck.

I feel the chuckle that he lets out vibrate through both his and my body and his hands travel towards my belly button, connecting together and pulling me closer towards him. I smile hazily, one hand traveling down to rest over both of his and turning my head towards his. I have to lean up to reach his face but I leave a sloppy kiss on his jaw, opening my eyes to see what he looks like.

I can’t see much through the strobe lights of the dance floor but from what I can tell, he’s cute. His hair is not short but not long, it’s more on the longer side of short hair, if that makes sense. But I like it, I like long hair. He has a few cuts on his face and I can’t help but wonder what from. By his calloused hands I can guess that maybe he has a dangerous job or hobby, like working in construction or doing boxing on the side.

I can see a hint of a chain under his shirt and I reach for it, tugging it out of his T-shirt. He watches as I examine the silver cross, stroking over it with my thumb.

Something moves out of the corner of my eye and I turn my head towards it, noticing Betsy waving a glass of a daiquiri, my favorite drink, at me. Tyler laughs from next to her as I immediately launch myself out of the stranger’s arms, pushing through the crowd clumsily as I make my way towards the bar.

“Just as I was starting to sober up,” I comment, climbing onto a barstool and taking the glass from Betsy.

“Who’s your friend?” Tyler asks, his eyes twinkling in amusement.

“Oh, I don’t know.” I sip on the beverage while moving along to the song, watching as Tyler leaves to talk to some cute guy at the other end of the bar.

“Will you be okay if I leave you here by yourself?” Betsy finally asks after exchanging seductive glances with some guy on the dance floor.

“Betsy, please,” I stir my second daiquiri. “You deserve to get laid tonight, go.”

“If you need me, come get me,” she orders.

I roll my eyes, calling after her, “I won’t!”

I start to enter my thoughts as I notice someone sitting down on the stool next to me. I don’t look over at the person, focused on counting how many drinks I had tonight.

He coughs, then says, “Hey.”

I glance over at him and my eyes are instantly drawn to the cross dangling from his neck. It’s the guy I danced with earlier.

“Hey.”

“You were dancing with me earlier,” he states, jutting with his thumb towards the dance floor.

“I know,” I nod.

He flushes, nodding as well. “Oh.” He’s quiet. “So, uh, I’m Clayton.”

“Y/N,” I respond, sticking my hand out for a handshake.

He shakes my hand, sending me a small smile. Now that we’re in somewhat proper lighting, I can see what he looks like more, and dang, he is cute. I can tell now that his hair is a nice shade of brown and his eyes are this magnificent green color. I could stare at them forever and never be able to tell how many different shades and colors there are in his eyes.

“You from around here?” He asks, motioning the bartender over.

I nod and watch as Clayton puts in his order, turning to me. “Do you want another drink?”

“No, I’m good,” I reject.

He raises his eyebrows but nods, thanking the bartender for the beer. I like to play hard to get when it comes to boys. It makes the sex better.

“Who’s that?” I ask, nodding towards a blonde boy at the end of the bar.

Clayton turns to look, furrowing his eyebrows in confusion. “That’s my teammate. Why?”

“He keeps looking at us,” I take the final sip of my daiquiri. “Teammate?”

“Yeah I play for the Arizona Coyotes.”

“Oh, hockey.”

“Have you ever been to a game?” He questions.

“Yeah, I went on a date once and then you guys lost and my date got pissed so he ditched me in the middle of the arena,” I explain.

“Oh that sucks. I mean, I wouldn’t be with you at the game obviously but I’d love to take you out on a date after a game, if you would like,” he asks me out with a smile.

“No thanks,” I pass, watching as Tyler and the guy he was flirting with stand up from their stools. They’re probably going back to Tyler’s place to hook up now.

“What? Did you say no thanks?”

“Yeah I’ll pass on the offer, no offense. I’m just not looking for anything serious right now.”

A bunch of cash is thrown on the bartop in front of me and Tyler looms over me. “Money for the bar, and some extra for your rent next month. It’s not a lot but it’ll help until you get stable a bit, okay? And don’t you dare give it back, otherwise you’re paying for drinks next time when I plan to get blackout wasted. Oh, and don’t come over to my apartment for the rest of the weekend.” He winks, grabbing his hookup’s hand and leading him out the door.

I roll my eyes at Tyler, calling the bartender over to close his tab. Clayton watches as I pay the bill and shove the rest of the money into my pocket.

“You’re having trouble paying your rent, huh?” Clayton asks with a sigh, picking up his beer and swirling it around.

I give him a look. “Why do you care?”

“And you don’t want to be in a serious relationship but you want to have some fun,” he continues, “Looks like what you’re looking for is a sugar daddy.”

I scoff. “I don’t want to hop on some desperate sixty year old’s dick, Clayton.”

“Who said they had to be sixty? They could be, I don’t know, twenty one with seven million dollars to spend a year,” he responds.

“Seven million?” I almost choke.

“And maybe, that guy doesn’t know what to spend that money on but he sees a beautiful girl sitting in front of him and well,” he shrugs, maintaining eye contact while he takes a sip of his beer.

I narrow my eyes at him. “I can’t tell if you’re being serious or not.”

“Dead.”

“If you’re really offering to be my sugar daddy-””I am.”

“Be prepared. I’m high maintenance.”

I guess you're all expecting me to say something about what happened. I should, after all, I hid this piece of information from you, not that I owe it to you, but I guess it's confusing...

'More than just a dream...'

Josh and I are still holding hands while we start the tour, and I wish I could say I was feeling bad about it but to be honest I'm still way too drunk on the bliss to be ashamed. I felt bad though, I did promise Nathan a date before everything went to hell. As a matter of fact, he was going to be my homecoming date.

Where to start? Perhaps you'd like to know who Nathan was in my group of friends? Easy.

*Throwback time*

Nathan was the 'popular' of our group. Do you know how there's always that one friend that seems to know everyone for really strange reasons? The one that 'knows a guy, that knows a guy, that has a cousin'... that's Nathan.

He was also the good looking guy of our group. I know I said Alex was attractive, but man, Nathan was the real deal, he had charisma and a great smile, try to beat that when you're sixteen and have zero social skills.

I didn't have a crush on him though, but it was a very well thought decision like I said before, I wasn't going to let someone close to me break my heart, and both Nathan and Alex were too close, so I buried those thoughts about him before I could even consider it.

I never had a thing for him until... well, until he asked me to homecoming. I never knew why he asked me, I mean sure we were good friends but he never tried to make a move (and this is not me being oblivious this is me saying Nathan never even commented on my looks not even once). While I do remember having said to him something along the lines of "you're so pretty you annoy me" one night while I was completely shitfaced.

He laughed it off then, not bringing it up to tease me the next morning. He knew he was attractive and I certainly used to dream about dashing men like him coming to take me out for a ride or a movie, but I never thought that it'd be him the one who would ask me out.

Then the end of the world happened and we never went to homecoming, yet we remained on the same group until one day he just vanished. No notes, no nothing. He left. He was also the first one to go, followed by Aria, then Phillip, then Lily, until we were just Maya, Alex and I, you know the rest.

We heard about Nathan a few weeks later though, the first loner on Glendale (Josh was very good at keeping a low profile, we didn't know he was by himself) and I thought it was a great idea to do the same, you know, follow the loner's path until I had Katie back... and you know how that turned out.

My point is, how was I supposed to know he was going to come back and still ask me for a date? What kind of person does that?

"Here we have the Cheeramazon division," Josh pointed to the sports section of the mall. "We teach sign language for those who are interested in learning, it's also handy for communicating while we're outside on a Ghoulie area..."

"Why're they here?" Nathan asked in a voice that was completely unlike him. "I mean, I know their old place got trashed but why haven't they looked for a new place?"

"They don't have enough people or resources," I replied. "They'll wait here until enough girls decide to join them or until they get enough food to survive on their own."

"And you guys are okay with that?"

"Good relationships with old tribes are everything," I shrugged. "We want to keep it friendly with everyone, we don't want to start another war."

"Really? Because you seemed ready to go out and set houses on fire five minutes ago," Josh replied sternly.

"That's different!" I scoff. "Those kids need our help and you know it!"

"What kids?" Nathan asked in curiosity.

"Are you familiar with the AV club?" I ask him.

"The kids with the podcast?"

"Exactly! They've been kidnapped and I've been trying to convince my tribe to go out and look for them but they refuse–"

"Because we're barely recovering from Triumph," Josh interrupted. "Listen Y/N, we can't be heroes fighting against some kids in suits..."

"Here we have the gamer's layer," I continue, forcing them to leave the subject. "But you don't have to write that down, they're leaving in a few days to their old cave. Been here to help us with some tech stuff..."

"Those over there are the X-jocks," Josh points over a couple of kids playing and exercising at the other side of the mall, "they followed Turbo after he was kicked out. They're no longer Jocks, but they don't want to be called Daybreakers either."

"They don't wanna mingle with all the weirdos, apparently," I roll my eyes.

"We have a healers division, which is coordinated by Y/N," Josh puts a hand on my shoulder and smiles. "She's great... a training division that Wesley and Turbo handle... Am I missing something?"

"The Daybreakers, which are lead by this loser," I look at Josh with a smirk. "He schedules our vigilance system, the hunts– Oh, and the weekly competitions."

"What are those about?"

"We organize tournaments and the awards are free days from working or having to go outside, stuff like that."

"Okay," Nathan nods, writing everything down. "I think that's all..."

"Cool," Someone calls Josh and he looks back at us. "Can you finish the tour on your own?"

"I– Yeah, okay," I reply anxiously. "See you in a while..."

Josh gives me a quick kiss and leaves to where he's needed, leaving me alone with Mister 'U-owe-me-a-date'.

"So..." I awkwardly start.

"I think I owe you an apology," He replies immediately.

"What?"

"I didn't know you and Josh... what I said was completely out of place anyway, who asks that kind of stuff to someone they haven't seen in months? I–"

"Nathan," I stop him, "It's okay, really, you didn't know, it's alright."

"I'm sorry," He repeats, this time calmer. "I ditch you and the group, I just... I don't know, I felt stuck..."

"I get that, we left too, eventually," I shrug. "Went to look for my sister, but... she died."

"Oh," He frowns. "I'm so sorry... was she–?"

"A Ghoulie, yeah," I sigh. "It's okay, I'm better now, I have this place and I have..."

"Josh..."

"I was going to say I have a sledgehammer, but sure," I joke.

He smiles and suddenly I remember why I used to like his smile so much. It really is quite dreamy.

'And you were out of my league All the things I believed You were just the right kind Yeah, you were more than just a dream'

"Those kids..." He mentions. "The AV club?"

"Yeah?" My heart jumps at the mention. "Do you know anything about them? Anything that could help?"

"No, but Josh mentioned kids in suits? I think I've seen them–"

"Y/N!" Josh runs back to us in a hurry. "They found them!"

"What? Who?"

"The AV Club!" He replies.

I try to walk over to the gamer's layer but Josh stops me.

"Wait," He holds me in place. "It's an X-Pug zone."

"That, or the kids in suits want us to believe it is," I point out, "Josh let me go! I want to know where it is!"

"We're not taking anyone there! You know we can't, Y/N! We don't have enough people, who knows how many of those are out there..."

I want to argue back but I know that Josh is right.

"Fine," I let go of his arms and he does the same with me. "Can I at least take a look? Maybe one day we'll go and... and just take a look..."

Josh doesn't need me to end the sentence though, he understands.

"Okay," He starts walking when Nathan speaks up.

"Can I see?"

We turn to see him, both wearing the same confused expression.

"It's just..." He moves his weight from one foot to the other. "I was telling Y/N that I've seen those kids before and maybe... I could talk to Sam, maybe she'd like to help?"

I look at Josh with my best puppy eyes and he sighs in defeat, nodding along.

"Fine..."

Nathan catches up with us and grins at me. What I shame I lost my chance with this guy, he looks like straight out of a fantasy, who knows, maybe he was the one meant to be with me if all this apocalypse stuff never happened in the first place...

When we arrive Aria takes me directly to her laptop and points to the image in it. I hear her talk to Nathan for a moment while I see the streets and the directions and since I know the whole city by heart it takes me a minute to memorize the whole thing. I don't tell this to Josh, of course.

"Are you going to leave us alone now?" She asks irritatedly.

"Sure thing, you can leave during the night and I wouldn't even bat an eye at it," I reply, still looking at the screen. "Let me just..."

I pull out my phone and take a picture of the screen, is not perfect but it's quick and it's just in case. Josh gives me a warning look but I smile.

"Thank you for doing this," I step closer to him and put my arms around his neck. "See? It didn't kill us to find out, right?"

If I've learned anything in my short stupid life, is that flattery can take you places... and it distracts a boy's brain faster than anything else.

Josh smiles at me and I know I have his whole attention, so I quickly put my phone away.

"Anyway!" I break the spell and look at the gamers. "You guys did a good job, I'll leave you now. Nathan, let me walk you to the door..."

Halfway to the entrance, Nathan speaks.

"You're so not going to listen to what Josh told you to do. I know it, I can see it in your face."

"How long till I can hear from you and Sam?" I ask him in a business-like voice.

"A day, maybe two?"

"You think she'll help?"

"That if we can push Maya to a side."

"Don't mention my name and you'll have a bigger chance to succeed."

I stop at the door and turn to look at him decidedly.

"You have no idea how much this means to me."

"If you're risking your stay at the mall and your relationship with Josh, I assume a lot," He raises a brow.

"He won't kick me out for this," I roll my eyes.

"He's your leader, Y/N."

I remember that none of our feelings ever stopped Josh from kicking me out the first time. So he's not entirely wrong.

"Don't sweat it," Nathan shakes his head, "I'll do my best to keep everyone happy, just like you've been doing for the last few weeks. Consider this my thank you gift for all the hard work you've been doing, Vinchi."

"Oh," I cringe. "I don't really go by that nickname anymore..."

"Oh, sorry," He pouts. "Just Y/N, then?"

"Unless you have a new nickname for me," I grin.

Nathan tilts his head like he's considering what I'm saying.

"I'll think about it," He smiles.

"I'll see you in two days," I smile back.

'Yeah, you were more than just a dream...'

Several weeks earlier…

“All right, here we are.”

Mark stopped the car and the two of you got out, grabbing your duffel bags from the backseat. The slam of the car doors echoed in the empty parking garage as the two of you made your way to a door reading “EMPLOYEES ONLY”.

This was your third rooftop night shift, but your stomach was filled with more butterflies than ever before, because this was your first one with Mark. You’d been eager to spend more time with him after how warmly he welcomed you to the group, and now your wish had finally come true.

“After you,” Mark said, opening the door for you. He tipped his beanie towards you as if it were a fedora.

“Cheesy,” you snorted, walking through the door. Mark followed you.

“Cheesy is my middle name!”

You ascended an endless staircase, eventually reaching one final door. Opening it, you stepped out onto the rooftop of the Glendale Galleria.

The glass sections of the roof revealed that the inside was lit up in a brilliant white. This was your first indicator that this place definitely had a night shift. You sighed internally, your last flicker of hope for an early night dying.

Mark finally appeared in the doorway, laying down his bag and walking to the edge of the rooftop. You joined his side as he stared out at the grid of lights that stretched in every direction as far as you could see.

“Nice view,” he commented.

“I prefer the one back home.”

“Oh yeah?” Mark turned to you with a curious expression.

“Yeah. You can actually see the stars at my parents’ house. And the Milky Way, if you turn the porch lights off.”

“That’s pretty awesome,” Mark smiled. “But who needs the Milky Way when you’ve got LA’s light pollution, right?”

You rolled your eyes with a loving smile. “Funny.”

“Funny is my middle name.”

“I thought cheesy was your middle name.”

“I have two.”

The two of you descended into laughter before picking up your bags once more and surveying your surroundings.

“All right, so what’s the plan here?”

Mark produced a rolled-up piece of paper from his bag; it was the map that Shrike and Gareth had compiled between them a few days prior. Mark scanned it and flitted his eyes up to the roof every few seconds. “Shark wants us to keep an eye on the guard rotation around the Swarovski store, which, according to this map, should be right… there.” He pointed to the largest glass dome in the middle of the roof.

“How about we get a quick scope of the whole place first, then settle in on the Swarovski store?” You suggested. “Might come in handy to know how many guards there’re gonna be overall.”

Mark nodded. “Good call.”

The two of you began to walk together from one edge of the roof to the next, sharing the map and marking out each guard you saw in light pencil. You caught Mark watching you out of the corner of your eye and you glanced at him, surprised to see an impressed smile on his face.

“You’re really good at this. And this is only, what, your third night shift?” His eyebrows raised along with his question.

You smiled, looking back down at the map. “Not like it’s hard.”

“Awh come on Zero, just take the compliment.”

“And if I don’t?” You teased.

“Well then this is gonna be a long night.”

You snorted, throwing your head back in laughter and continuing to walk. “That’s what I said to myself five minutes into what was possibly the worst date I’ve ever been on.”

Mark laughed, following you. “Oh no. What happened?”

You groaned. “I had to do like, ninety-nine percent of the talking. No joke. Me. Doing all the talking. You’ve seen how quiet I can be at work. God it was a nightmare, like why would you agree to a date with me if you don’t even really wanna be there?”

Mark shot you a sympathetic look as he scribbled on the map. “Maybe they were just super shy? But either way, that’s pretty rough. I’m sorry.”

You shrugged your shoulders. “No harm done. What about you, what’s the worst date you’ve ever been on?”

Mark paused, pursing his lips and looking up at the sky. “There was this one time I was asked to fill out my birth chart and do some online personality test before the date even started. That was… weird.”

You laughed, gasping in disbelief. “And how did that go?”

“Oh, the date?” Mark looked back down at you. “Technically, it didn’t even happen. My date decided we weren’t compatible cause I’m a Cancer and an extrovert, or some shit.”

“Wow.”

“Yeah.” Mark grinned at you.

 After about ninety minutes of slowly working your way up and down the roof and sharing stories, you and Mark finished up at the largest glass dome overlooking the Swarovski store. You were about to settle onto the cold concrete of the roof when Mark pulled out two foldable camping chairs from his duffel bag.

“Did you really think I was gonna let you sit on a roof all night without a bit of comfort?”

“Shrike did,” you replied, standing back up.

“That’s cause she’s an alien. I’m a human being.”

“That’s exactly what an alien would say if they were trying to pass as a human.”

“You got me,” Mark laughed, holding his hands up. “Got binoculars?”

You fished them out of your bag, throwing a pair to him. “Catch!”

Panic crossed his face, but he caught them just in time. “See that? Cat-like reflexes.”

“Sure thing, Catwoman.” You rolled your eyes, looking through your own pair of binoculars.

“Ten-fifteen, no guards,” you mumbled under your breath. Mark jotted down your observations on the sides of the map.

“What time d’you think they turn the lights off here?” You asked.

Mark shrugged. “Hopefully soon. It’s a little blinding.”

“Yeah,” you agreed. “Must be weird walking through a dark empty mall at night though. I dunno why, but it makes me think of this video game my friend made me play in college. You played as a security guard in a haunted pizzeria.”

“Not that animatronics one.” Mark’s voice was flat with dread.

You removed the binoculars from your eyes, shooting him a surprised look. “Yeah! You know it?”

“Man, don’t even talk to me about that game.”

You laughed. “It had me sleepless for days as well.”

There was silence between you two for several minutes as you went back to the task at hand, until Mark broke the silence once more.

“How’d you get into video games?”

You leaned back in your chair, surprised again at the inquisitive look Mark was giving you. You played with the binoculars in your hands.

“My dad got me into them, actually. He was always really into them as a kid, all the retro stuff. We used to spend a few nights each week completing a video game together whenever I was home.”

“That’s cute,” Mark smiled. “Do you miss Pennsylvania?”

Your stomach flipped. You normally hated that question, but something about the sincere, gentle look Mark was giving you made you want to open up to him even more.

“A little,” you replied, sitting forward and glancing down. “But LA is starting to feel like home. It took a while, but I’m getting there.”

You looked at Mark again. Your stomach continued flipping as a sweet smile spread across his face.

“Good.” His answer was so quiet you almost missed it.

“Y’know, I don’t think I’ve ever actually asked where you’re from, Mark.”

Amidst the darkness, you could’ve sworn a hint of pink spread across his cheeks. “Oh, it’s fine. I’m from Ohio originally.”

“Shut up! We were state neighbours this whole time and you never told me?”

Mark’s eyebrows raised as he let out a hearty laugh. “Yeah, I guess we were! But hey, look at us both now, living it up in the big city.”

“Damn right we are!” You held out your hand for a high five. Mark accepted it, the singular clap reverberating into the night.

 You settled into another comfortable silence, only breaking it to make the occasional remark about the guard patterns. When the lights finally dimmed inside the mall, you and Mark let out a quiet cheer of relief. You dug your phone out of your bag to check the time, surprised to see that it was 12:30 am.

“Wow. Time flies, huh?” You flashed your phone screen at Mark.

“Sure does when you’re having fun,” he smiled back, jotting down another note on the side of the map. “Lights out, twelve-thirty.”

You stuffed your phone back into your bag, turning away to hide the huge grin that appeared on your face.

“By the way, what was that on your lock screen?”

Heat flushed to your face as you retrieved your phone once more. Damn this guy, he doesn’t miss a beat.

You passed your phone to him. “It’s the view of the city from the Griffith Observatory. I’ve not actually been up there yet, but I found that picture online and I liked it, so…”

Mark raised his eyebrows at you in disbelief as he gave you back your phone. “You’ve never been there? You should totally go!”

“I know, I know. I just didn’t have time what with school. It just fell to the back of my to do list.”

Mark hummed in response, but he was staring at the sky as if he were lost in space. He bit his lip.

“I could take you there some time. If you wanted,” he offered. His voice was uncharacteristically quiet once again.

“That’d be fun.” You smiled, trying to keep your cool despite the butterflies filling your stomach.

Out of nowhere, a chilling breeze picked up. You shivered violently with a groan of protest, rubbing up and down your arms.

“Son of a bitch, where did that come from?”

Mark reached for something in his bag. “LA weather can still surprise you sometimes. Here, put this on.”

He threw something black onto your lap. You picked it up, realising it was one of his sweatshirts. You cast him a bashful smile. The hit of warmth was immediate when you snuggled into the garment, and a faint smell of cologne enveloped you. You sighed happily to yourself.

“You’re not getting this back.”

“I figured you’d say that.”

 After another hour and yet more watching and waiting, you heard Mark’s stomach rumble faintly. An idea popped into your head. You reached into your bag, pulling out a large flask and holding it out to him.

“Here.”

Mark took the flask, unscrewing the lid and sniffing with a curious frown. “What is this?”

“Chicken soup.”

“You brought soup?”

“Well we’re gonna be out here for a while, what did you bring?”

“… Cookies.”

You shook your head. “Good thing you have me to keep you in check. Go on, it’s homemade.”

Mark took a sip. His eyes lit up in delight.

“Damn Zero, that’s good. You made that?”

“Mhmm,” you nodded. “Family recipe. Warms you right through to your bones.”

“In which case,” Mark began, a hint of mischief in his voice as he handed the flask back to you. “If you have this, can I have my sweatshirt back?”

“Nope!”

Mark leant back in laughter, picking up his binoculars again. “So, you’re stubborn and a good chef. I’m learning a lot tonight.”

You scoffed back at him, retreating further into his sweatshirt.

“Chicken soup’s my favourite kind actually.”

“Yeah?”

Mark hummed, binoculars still glued to his eyes. “My mom used to make it for me when I was sick. You’d think I’d hate it cause of that reminder of feeling crappy, but the opposite happened.” He lowered the binoculars, gazing at you for a few seconds in silence. “I guess it just reminds me of… I dunno, that I have people lookin’ out for me.”

Your heart felt like it had been lit on fire. You swallowed, trying to summon the right words, but your mind was blank. You managed a shy, wordless nod, pulling down the sleeves of Mark’s sweatshirt to cover your hands.

 The next few hours seemed to fly by in a matter of minutes. By the time you were satisfied with the guard rotations you’d mapped out, it was nearly six in the morning. Your eyes felt like they had papercuts, and your brain ached for a dark room and warm blankets. You and Mark packed away your equipment into your bags. Just as you were about to make your way to the door, Mark unexpectedly grabbed your hand.

“Wait, this is the best part.”

“Whaaaat?” You groaned, desperate for sleep.

Mark led you to the edge of the rooftop once more. “Trust me, it’ll only take a couple of minutes, and it’s more than worth it.”

You looked across the landscape ahead of you. You were about to ask what the fuss was about when bright orange hues bled into the sky from the horizon, and everything stopped.

The sun was slowly rising over the city, bathing all of the buildings in a brilliant orange light. Wispy clouds drifted along, interfering with the sunbeams and creating dancing patterns in the sky. Your eyes widened, a small gasp escaping your mouth.

“You know, I’ve never really stopped to notice this before,” you admitted.

Mark turned to you. “Are you glad you did?”

You nodded at him. “Yeah.”

It dawned on you in that moment, after having looked at him through hours of darkness, just how incredible his eyes were. The early morning light blazed in them, highlighting all the brilliant brown tones that intertwined and danced with one another.

You cleared your throat, taking in a deep breath of the crisp air. Mark looked away, adjusting his bag on his shoulder.

“We, uh…” he shifted on the spot, smiling at the rising sun and scratching the back of his head. “We make a pretty good team, don’t we?”

You grinned back at him harder than ever before. “We sure do.”

when it comes to audrina’s adoption and their parents, there is no scandal- much to the disapintment of new york city. instead of being raised in south korea, audrina’s birth parents made the decision to give them up for adoption. it was an open adoption and audrina grew up with their birth parents as close family friends and their guardians, viktor and anika. viktor and anika were unable to have biological children of their own and after adopting audrina, they started a foundation meant to help in the adoption process for parents struggling.

HAWKINS, INDIANA

DECEMEBER 1984

Another year has flown by and this town has started to be the only place I like. I don't want to go back home to Odessa even though My dad has been hinting at it. He's been talking to me about going driving on dirt roads and maybe buying a farm. Back to the old days.

I know that if we go home, I'm not gonna like it.

All the terrible things that happened, happened. It's life now and I have to find a way to deal with it and move on. I am actually. I've started therapy sessions at the end of last month. Hopper had gotten in touch with a doctor from the lab who connected me with a therapist. I'm allowed to freely talk about everything that's happened, my feelings about it, how I'm gonna move on from it.

Meanwhile I've actually started to pick up my grades. On the nights that I can't sleep I spend it doing extra credit or studying for anything coming up in my classes. My last quiz wasn't so bad I got a b minus. It wasn't like miracles were gonna happen overnight.

It just means that whatever new normal that's out there for me, I'm adjusting to it.

Dayton is coming home soon. After I got home with Mickey that night we all talked on the phone for what felt like hours. I told them what my mother had told me and it felt like we were finally seeing clearly.

I didn't think a year ago that this boring town would throw me for any loops. But it did.

I'm not grateful for the loops, not at all. If I had the chance I would make sure none of this ever happened. But I am grateful for the people who were beside me when the world literally turned upside down.

Now I'm chaperoning for the snowball dance. It's not what I wanted to do on my free night. I didn't have plans per say but I would've came up with some. That's all shot to hell now. I've got to keep an eye on who's coming and going from the dance.

Make sure these kids aren't up to anything.

A car pulls up from the lot meaning another kid is getting dropped off. These kids all looked so dorky with their fancy clothes. It was cute when you didn't think about how crazy and annoying middle schoolers were.

Mickey came with me and was inside mingling. He had come out of his shell surprisingly. Or maybe he never had a shell and I was just assuming.

I saw Mike, Lucas, and Will come in. They all greeted me with stares. They had never seen me in a dress and with the whole nine yards of prepping I did to look decent for the dance. It reminded me of the first time I went down into the basement.

No way I was letting them forget that. They looked all dazed out like they hadn't see a girl before. Little did they know that the girls would start lining up now. Lucas and Dustin were tripping over Max.

Mike had Eleven.

Will didn't really have his sight on anyone yet. But I figure just letting the kid have a good time is all anyone could ask for.

Then Max showed up.

She looked like she was in pain from the hair-do that her mother did for her. I helped her out a bit and loosened the pins in her hair and she thanked me. I know that her and El are gonna get along great. The inner feminist in me is gonna make sure of it.

I was still waiting on El and Dustin to show up before I switched places with someone else. I was dying to get inside and get a drink.

I see Dustin getting out of the car with his hair done up. He's still got the curls but his sides are slicked back. He looks like a little womanizer! He sees me and smiles as he comes my way.

"Looking fly there kid." I compliment him.

He purrs at me and I laugh. "Thank you."

I open the door for him and let him in.

I wonder who dropped him off.

My nosey self bends down to see who was driving the car and sure enough it's Steve.

After that night me and Steve were cool. It was like we were friends but we haven't really said that to each other yet. We throw jokes in class. If I see him in the hallways he waves, I wave. At lunch too. And most times he's around when I pick up Mickey from D&D nights.

Usually we talk as the boys are all gearing up to leave. Sometimes he gets there before they finish the game and we talk amongst ourselves. It's nice.

"Is that Jessie Glendall!" He shouts at me.

My eyes go wide in embarrassment. It was enough that my dad talked me into taking this job for the night. And more than enough when both my dad and my brother made me wear a dress. And now Steve is calling me out like this?

I jog over to his car.

When I get there I lean over the passenger window and flip him off. "Very funny idiot. Remember I know you listen to Donna Summer."

He giggles at me threatening him. "I'm proud of it. So do your worst."

"You know I could have sworn I saw your mini me walk past me. Farrah Fawcett spray and all." I joke and his smile drops. He would kill me if I let that slip. "Relax."

Theres a moment that passes but it's not awkward.

"So you're doing good right?" He asks.

And then there was that. He was there when my mother bid her goodbye to me and Mickey. He didn't say anything about it at first. He's only recently started asking me if I was okay. I would have been fed up but I expect it from him. This is how we first started talking anyways.

I nod my head.

"Yeah. I'm getting there," I trail off in a thought. "You know only friends ask each other if they're okay, right?"

I watch as Steve scoffs lightly, facing the front window now. "You trying to say we're friends Jessie?"

I shrug my shoulders casually. "Milk girl and the king of Hawkins. Doesn't sound too bad."

Steve chuckles and so do I. He slaps the wheel of his car and turns to look at me again.

"No it doesn't."

"Alright let me get back to it before I find out you're staring at my boobs."

He starts sputtering a response but I don't really hear it as I peel myself off his car. I turn around dot walk away when I hear shuffling so I turn back. He's got his whole head out the passenger side window.

"You just ruined our friendship. That's great."

I taunt him. "You trying to say we're friends Steve?"

He smiles at me and I smile back.

I'm standing next to the kids table watching over them when I see a random girl walk up to them. Lucas and Max just stepped away to go and dance after Mickey had pulled a cute little girl from the crowd.

I feel bad for Dustin but I know he'll find his someone. And it's only middle school anyways. There is a lot more life left for him to go and find love. Or whatever it is middle schoolers are calling it these days.

"Hey Zombie boy. Do you wanna dance?" She asks him.

Zombie boy?

I walk over to Will with my hand out. "How about you dance with a pro?"

Will takes my hand and I walk him to the dance floor near Lucas and Max. The scoff that came from that random girl didn't go unnoticed by me.

I place his hands on my hips and let my arms reach down to his shoulders. It doesn't take long for him to be moving in beat. He's not that bad of a dancer.

"Anyone else calls you by anything other than your name you tell me. I got a carton of milk waiting." I let him know and he laughs, his shoulders dancing as he does.

"Thanks Jessie."

The night ends with all of my kids on the dance floor. They're happy and hopeful. That's all I can ask for really. I know that everything is gonna be okay. It won't go back to normal, nothing really can go back to the way it was.

But it wouldn't be too bad in Hawkins now.

Might've been those stars I learned about. Finally heard my wishes.

“Yes!” you said a little too loudly as your boyfriend, Clayton scored the overtime goal and secured a win for the Arizona Coyotes. Everyone in the classroom looked at you, and you quickly closed the tab that had the NHL tracker on it.

“Miss Y/LN? Is there something you would like to share with the class?” Your professor said from the front of the room.

“N-no sir,” you stammered.

He shook his head before continuing the lesson. You looked at the clock on your laptop: only five more minutes until you were free from your awful night class.

Your best friend Nicole, whose pen had laid slack on her notebook for at least a half hour, started writing urgently on a page and turned it towards you.

“Did they win?” it said.

You took the pen out of her hand and wrote back: “Yes, Clay in OT.”

She smiled, took the pen out of your hand again, and wrote, “Can’t wait to go out tonight. The usual place?” You couldn’t help but let out a small giggle, which thankfully went unheard by your peers this time, and nodded.

“All right, class, next time we’ll talk about the stock market,” your professor announced, and you closed your laptop, shoved it in your bag, and jumped out of your seat. Nicole was right behind you as you scurried out of the classroom and towards the front door.

“Ugh, that was the most boring lecture yet!” you lamented as the two of you exited the building and started walking towards your car. “Why did we have to get stuck with an 8-10PM lecture?”

“Because we’re cursed,” Nicole muttered, and you laughed in response.

Your phone started to ring, and you didn’t even have to look at the screen to know it was Clayton.

“Hey, babe, great game!” you said. “And you scored the OT goal—I’m so proud of you!”

You heard Clayton chuckle on the other line. “Thanks, babe. I’m guessing you watched it on your laptop during class?”

You sighed while opening the door to the passenger’s seat of your car, Nicole already heading for the driver’s seat. She knew without even asking that you wanted to talk to Clayton. You buckled your seatbelt, gave Nicole the keys to your car, and put the phone on speaker before replying, “Guilty.”

“Babe, I love when you watch my games, but school is important.”

“But the class is so boring, and it’s late at night! Why pay attention when I can watch you?” you said as Nicole pulled out of the parking lot.

“Because you want to pass the class, right?” Clayton replied.

You gave a noncommittal grumble in response, but he laughed, knowing that you did indeed want to pass.

“I just don’t want you to get in trouble, Y/N, especially not because of me. One of these days, your professor is going to catch you and confiscate your laptop.”

“She almost got caught today,” Nicole butted in, and you glared at her for ratting you out.

You heard Clayton sigh on the other line. “Please be careful, Y/N.”

“I will! I’ll be more careful, I promise,” you said before changing the subject. “So, everyone’s going out to celebrate, right?”

“Yeah, at the usual place. Are you and Nicole meeting us there?”

“Yep, we’re already on our way.”

“You’re not driving, are you?” Clayton asked, panic in his voice.

You rolled your eyes. Clayton meant well, but he was so overprotective. “Of course not! Do you think I want to get in an accident?”

“Well, considering that you almost got caught in class today watching my game…”

“Come on, Clay, you know me: I’m responsible, especially around cars,” you asserted.

“I know,” he replied. “So I’ll see you soon?”

“Yeah, we’ll be there in ten. Love you!”

“Love you, too,” Clayton replied before you hung up the phone.

“God, you guys are too cute,” Nicole said. “You even argue like an old married couple.”

“We do not!” you protested.

She giggled and stopped the car at the red light before putting her hands up in defense. “I’m just saying, Y/N, you guys are the only couple I know that I think will last past graduation.”

You smiled. You had been dating Clayton for over two years now, and your relationship was completely solid. All of your friends kept saying they thought he would propose after graduation next spring, and although you dismissed them whenever they brought it up, you secretly hoped he would. If someone had told you five years ago that you would want to get married at twenty-two, you would’ve laughed and said they were crazy, but everything changed when you met Clayton. You loved him and wanted to spend the rest of your life with him, and now that Clayton had signed an eight-year extension with the Coyotes, it felt like the timing was right.

“You’ve got that look on your face,” Nicole said with a knowing smile.

“What look?” you asked, startled.

“The look you get whenever you think about Clayton,” she said. “I’ve never seen you look so happy as you do when he’s on your mind.” Nicole was your best friend since you were in elementary school in Glendale, and you lived together in an apartment while going to college in Phoenix. When you first met Clayton and told her about him, she was initially wary, worried that as a hockey player, he would break your heart, but she quickly changed her mind.

“Really?” you said.

“Really. You get all googly-eyed and smile really big,” Nicole confirmed. “I’m not supposed to say anything, but Clayton’s going to ask you to move in with him tonight. And before you say no,” she added, noticing that you had already opened your mouth to speak, “I’m totally fine with it. My parents said they’ll pay the rent for this year.”

“Are you sure?” Clayton already asked you to move in with him last year, but you didn’t want to leave your best friend behind. She had always been there for you, and you refused to abandon her. With that said, you did want to live with Clayton for a while before getting engaged: it seemed logical for that to be the next step in your relationship.

“Positive. You’re my best friend, and I want to see you happy. Clayton does that,” she said as she pulled into a parking space that happened to be open right next to the club and put the car in park. “And we’re here.”

“Thanks, Nicki,” you said, reaching over to give her a hug. Only you were allowed to call her Nicki; if anyone else tried, they had a death wish.

“Of course,” she replied. “Now let’s get in there and find your man!”

You giggled as you got out of the car and closed the door. Nicole met you on the curb, and you wrapped your arm around her as you walked into the club.

When you arrived in the VIP area, you saw the boys were already drinking quite a bit.

“Hey, it’s Y/N and Nicki!” Jakob Chychrun shouted. You looked over at Nicole, thinking she was going to kick his ass, but she blushed and smiled at him.

“Hi, Jake,” you said to the tall blonde boy in front of you. “Where’s Clay?”

“Actually, I have no…”

Someone’s hands started tickling your sides, and you cut Jakob off with a scream. You turned around to find Clayton standing behind you. “You scared me!” you said.

“Sorry, babe, I saw an opportunity and had to take it.”

“You’re not sorry,” you said, raising an eyebrow.

“You’re right: I’m not,” he replied, leaning in to kiss you on the lips.

“Hey Nicki, do you want something to drink?” Jakob asked your best friend. While you were still in Clayton’s arms, you pulled away from the kiss and leaned your head on his shoulder in order to eavesdrop on their conversation. Jakob had a crush on Nicole for a while now, and she felt the same way about him. You were hoping he was going to finally make a move.

“I can’t drink tonight. I’m the DD,” she said.

“Okay, wanna dance instead, then?”

“Sure.” Nicole was absolutely beaming when she took Jakob’s hand, and you winked at her before she turned away.

“Yay!” you cheered when they were far enough away to not hear you.

Clayton laughed. “God, stop doing that.”

“Doing what?”

“Nothing. I just love how much you support Nicole,” he said while wrapping his arms around your lower waist, his hands resting on your hips.

You blushed at the contact. “Are you trying to seduce me?” you asked.

“Why, is it working?” he smirked.

“You know it is!” you said, laughing before schooling your face to take on a serious expression. “But I wanted to ask you something.”

“What is it, babe?” Clayton asked, a look of concern flashing across his face.

“It’s nothing bad, it’s just…Nicole said on the way over that you were going to ask me to move in with you.”

Clayton sighed. “Ugh, she wasn’t supposed to tell you! I should never have told her.”

“Actually, I’m glad you did,” you said. “The only thing that was holding me back from moving in with you last year was Nicole—I didn’t want to abandon her. But now that I know her parents are going to take care of the rent, I can rest easy.”

“Are you saying that you’ll move in with me?” Clayton asked, a grin slowly overtaking his face.

“Yes,” you replied, and Clayton picked you up and spun you around a few times before putting you down.

“Let’s go back to my…I mean, our place,” Clayton said, still grinning.

“Definitely, let me just tell Nicole we’re…” Your eyes landed on Nicole and Jakob making out on the dance floor. “On second thought,” you giggled, “I’ll text her. I don’t want to ruin the moment.”

Clayton looked over and chuckled. “Good idea. Thank God he made a move, I was getting real tired of ‘Nicole this, Nicole that,’” he said, mimicking Jakob.

You laughed. “All right, let’s get out of here. Do you need me to call an Uber?”

“Nah, I already called for one about five minutes ago; they should be here any minute,” Clayton said.

You smacked him lightly on the arm. “A little presumptuous, are we?” you joked.

“My team just won a game, my girlfriend looks absolutely gorgeous, and she agreed to move in with me. I think we both know where this night is headed,” he said.

“Oh my God, Clay! Your mom would wash your mouth out with soap if she heard you say that,” you giggled.

“Yeah, yeah, I know,” Clayton said with a blasé tone, and you grabbed his hand and made your way out of the club.

Logan took a deep breath, closing his eyes. “My name’s Logan Delos, and I’m an addict.” You sat back in your chair, watching as Logan spoke - his voice strong and his tone even. “You probably already know that, know at least some of what I’ve gone through, what I’ve done to get to this point.” Your eyes left Logan and wandered over the others that were sitting in the open space, which didn’t look much different than it had the last time you’d seen it - with the exception of the presence of the larger facility out the back windows. Feels good to be h… back. There were about twenty people in the room that you knew to be patients of the Village, men and women alike, and they were all watching Logan with interest. Good for you, Logan. 

 The trip was the first time you’d been back to Fireside since you’d moved to Los Angeles to be closer to Logan, and even though only six months had gone by, it felt like a lifetime. Things had stuck to the proposed schedule, and Kynthos had been able to complete construction and renovations slightly ahead of schedule, the Fireside Recovery Village opening when it was supposed to - Logan, Lincoln and Kynthos representatives on site for the launch, you sitting in the audience and watching the ceremony, beaming with pride from the front row as Logan shook hands and cut the ribbon. 

 The two of you had stayed in your house for the time he’d been in Wyoming for the opening, even though you’d started packing things up for your move. Logan was excited at the thought of you being within a few miles of him permanently - he’d asked you to move in with him until you found a place, but you’d declined, promising him that it was only so that you could get to know Los Angeles without needing to depend on him, without feeling even more indebted to him than you already did. You’d spent the first three weeks in Los Angeles living out of a hotel, your stuff in storage, and even though finding a condo had been overwhelming, you’d found one that suited you in Glendale, which was close enough to Logan’s Bel Air house that you got to see him frequently, even though you were both working a lot. 

 You didn’t have to work, sure, but you wanted to, not content to get complacent with the change in your financial status. Working gave you a chance to meet new people, to learn your new city, and feel as if you had a purpose, something that you’d been feeling less and less as the date for the closure of your resort approached. Logan did what he could to make Los Angeles feel like home for you, even though the city was still strange and overwhelming, but it was undeniable that you felt much better in the shadow of the Tetons, even though you were trying to make it work on the coast. 

You heard a laugh and it drew you from your thoughts, your attention going back to Logan as he spoke, an invited guest to a group session that was coming at the end of your second day back in Wyoming, the two of you visiting the grounds to check on the changes and see how things were running. 

 “I know that coming here - being here - isn’t easy for any of you, but it’s the first step.” Logan was looking over the people in the room, taking the time to speak to each of them, not just at them, and you smiled, watching intently. “And I admit, I’ve had a lot of advantages in my life, a lot of things that allowed me to seek out care and treatment when I chose to. But those same advantages? They also led me more easily to make bad and dangerous decisions.” Logan took a breath. “I’m not here to preach to you. I’m not here to tell you ‘oh this is going to work, because it did for me.’ I’m not here to make promises or to blow smoke up your asses about how easy it is once you’ve got a good support system.” He looked at you, eyes full of anguish. “It’s not easy. And it never will be, because the things that people like us do that lead us to need places like these? Those things are dangerous and destructive, and they aren’t just going to stop being a part of our lives because we want them to.” Logan took another deep breath, closing his eyes. “People lie all the time. But you cannot keep lying to yourself when you’re sick or unhappy or need some help.” He stared at you again, biting down on his lower lip and shaking his head. “You’ve gotta be honest, and that’s the most important part of beginning your recovery.” 

 Logan kept talking, and when he finished his speech, you were one of the first to stand, clapping for him - but the rest of the people in the room followed suit, and soon enough, he was surrounded by people, shaking hands and grinning. He’s giving them hope. “Welcome back, Kiddo.” You heard the voice before you saw the man, turning to hug David tightly. “Good to see you!” You pulled the man from the room and into the hallway, wanting to talk to him in a quieter area. “How’ve you been? How’s LA?” 

 “I’m…” You paused, frowning. “LA is nice. It’s … being with Logan more is great, but…” You looked around the hallway, eyes landing on the door of the room that you’d spent many nights in, then the one that led to the old management office. “It’s not home, David, and I don’t know if it ever will be.” David’s eyes widened, but you continued. “I’m trying, I really am, but I felt more at home in Indiana and Pennsylvania after a few weeks for college…” You trailed off, not knowing how to continue. That’s the first time I’ve admitted that out loud. 

 “Does Logan know?” You shook your head, looking down at your feet. “Don’t you think he should?” 

 “Yes. But I don’t want to say anything before…” Before what? “I want to give it more time, I’m just getting settled, and I can’t…” You rubbed at your face. “It’s his home, it’s where he feels… and he wants me there, and I want to be there.” Do I? You and David spoke for a few more minutes, talking about Brandon and Elle and their home in Texas, about David’s family - and then you felt a hand on your back. 

 “You about ready to go?” Logan stepped next to you, addressing you first before he held a hand out to David. “Good to see you, David. How’s it going?” The two men spoke for a few minutes and then David excused himself, Logan taking your hand and walking with you down the hallway and out the front door of the lodge. “Being back here is…” Logan took a deep breath, and you turned your head toward him, watching as his eyes landed on the Caboose that he’d first stayed in. “Memories, yeah? I’m sure that for you, this is…” Hard? Sad? A reminder? He turned to look at you, offering a smile that was only a shadow of the one he usually wore. “You alright?” 

 You nodded automatically, taking a deep breath. “Haven’t been away from here for six months straight since I was in school, Logan.” You shrugged. It’s not a lie, not really. “There’s a lot…” You pressed your lips together. “It’s not my home anymore, but it still feels like it is.” He swallowed, pausing before he turned toward you, reaching up with one hand to flatten his palm on your cheek, lips descending toward yours. He pulled you closer as you kissed, the action sending a jolt of warmth through your entire body, and when he pulled back, you were smiling, feeling marginally better than you had been. “What was that for?”

“You looked like you needed it.” Logan kissed you again - quickly - and then gestured toward your rental car. “Want to go get something to eat before we head back to the hotel?” You nodded, taking Logan’s hand and squeezing. “Gun Barrel? Gather? You pick, I’ll drive.” You slid into the passenger seat and Logan started the car, waiting for you to type in the address for Gun Barrel. As he backed out of the parking spot and eased down the driveway toward 390, he reached over, taking your hand in his and squeezing. “I’m... “ He paused, thinking. “I like bein’ with you. A lot.” You glanced over at him, eyes wide. “Thank you for giving this a shot.” Logan winked at you before returning his eyes to the road, and you turned your head to look out the window, heart pounding as his fingers remained wrapped tightly around yours. I’ll give it a few more months before I say anything. I have to.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND September 20, 2019  - VILLAINS, BLOODLINE, DOWNTON ABBEY, AD ASTRA, RAMBO: LAST BLOOD

It’s hard to believe that September is almost over, and we’re just sailing through the September festival season with the New York Film Festival starting (for real) next week.  There are three wide releases, but I will only have seen one of them before writing this, so instead, I’ll talk about a couple genre movies opening Friday, both of which played at Lincoln Center’s “Scary Movies XII” last month.

I remember writing quite extensively about VILLAINS (Alter/Gunpowder and Sky) when I was over at the Tracking Board, mainly about the casting of Bill Skarsgard from It, Maika Monroe from It Follows, as well as Jeffrey Donovan and Kyra Sedgwick. It’s the new movie from Dan Berk and Robert Olsen, who directed the horror sequel The Stakelander and have written a pretty amazing comedy-thriller twist on the home invasion movie. Skarsgard and Monroe play a young couple who hide out in a seemingly abandoned house after robbing a store. They soon learn that not only is it not abandoned, but there is a young girl chained in the basement. The owners of the home, played by Kyra Sedgwick and Jeffrey Donovan, then return and things go sideways for the young couple as they find that maybe their petty crimes make them the good guys in this scenario.  Villains is getting a fairly hearty release into roughly 100 theaters across the country, so check your listings to see if/where it will be playing near you. (It mainly seems to be playing in Regal theaters across the country.)

Another interesting genre film opening Friday is Henry Jacobson’s psychological thriller BLOODLINE (Momentum Pictures), starring Seann William Scott as Evan, a high school social worker with a secret – he’s also a serial killer who tries to help his patients by ridding them of their issues. Evan is also experiencing a new baby with his wife, which might keep him from his killing habits, except that his mother (Dale Dickey) has shown up to help them, and she was the one who taught him his ways. This is a really dark and gory film that I quite enjoyed in a similar way as some of my favorite serial killer thrillers, from Hitchcock’s Psychoto Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer and others. It honestly can’t be a better time for this with all the true crime television we’re getting, and I was pretty blown away by Scott’s performance in this. Bloodlineisplaying at the IFC Center for Friday and Saturday late night screenings and probably will be available On Demand as well.

The one wide release I have seen this weekend is Focus Features’ DOWNTOWN ABBEY, a continuation of the PBS series with an absolutely amazing British cast that includes Dame Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton and so many more that I won’t name all of them. I feel that I’m not the best person to properly review the movie since I haven’t seen a second of the series, but I generally liked what I saw and might give it a look if I can find a good streaming source on which to binge it. I actually liked the movie enough to recommend it without having any previous knowledge of the series.

Probably my biggest disappointment of this week is that I didn’t have a chance to see James Gray’s AD ASTRA (20thCentury Fox), starring Brad Pitt, before Thursday night, because I wasn’t able to get to the press screening. It’s been one of my more anticipated movies of the year, mainly because I generally love outer space movies, but I also have been interested in seeing what Gray and Pitt do with the material, especially with such a great supporting cast.

Another movie that I only got to see just before this column posts is Sylvester Stallone’s RAMBO: LAST BLOOD (Lionsgate), which I reviewed over at The Beat. I had very few expectations for the movie, as I’ve never been a huge Rambo fan. I’m not sure why, but I guess I just never got into the Rah! Rah! USA! Stuff that permeated the United States in the ‘80s, and I was more into music than movies at the time. Reading my review, it’s obvious that Stallone’s latest attempt to revive a franchise didn’t do much for me.

LIMITED RELEASES

I’m not quite sure why there are so many limited releases this weekend –I count almost 30 (!!!!) over on Rotten Tomatoes– but I’ll see what I can get to this week since I’m already a little behind. If you missed, Rob Zombie’s 3 FROM HELL on Monday and Tuesday night and more importantly, missed my scathing review of it over at The Beat, well, then you’ve missed it since this column is posting after it played its last night before its blu-ray release next month. Sorry!

A fantastic documentary opening at the Metrograph this week is Jacqueline Olive’s directorial debut ALWAYS IN SEASON (Multitude Films), a stirring film about the history of lynching, circling around the death of 17-year-old Lennon Lacy from Bladenboro, North Carolina, which is ruled as a suicide but his mother Claudia is convince that her son was lynched. Olive’s powerful film provides a background for how lynching became so prevalent in the early part of the 20thCentury, including an eerie annual reenactment by the town of Monroe, Georgia that wants to make sure that the county’s atrocities aren’t forgiven or forgotten.  Narrated by Danny Glover, Olive’s directorial debut is powerful and moving and a film that must not be missed – maybe it’s no surprise that it won a Special Jury prize at Sundance Film Festival for “Moral Urgency” earlier this year. I was pretty shaken up when I saw it at this year’s Oxford Film Festival.

The Metrograph is also screening two National Geographic shorts, Alexander A. Mora’s The Night Crawlers and Orlando von Einsiedel’sLost and Found, over the next week. The Night Crawlers looks at a group of Filipino journalists known as the “Manila Nightcrawlers” who seek to expose the truth about President Duterte’s war on drugs and the number of people who lost their lives over it. Lost and Foundi s a new doc short from the director of the Netflix doc The White Helmets which looks at the Myanmar’s ethnic violence against the Rohingya people through the eyes of a man in a refugee camp seeking to reunite children with parents.

Japanese animation house Studio TRIGGER’s first feature film PROMARE (GKIDS) will get a limited release on Friday, following Fathom Events showings on Tuesday (already passed) and Thursday (tonight). It will then be opening in New York at the Metrograph and AMC Empire on Friday for a one-week run. It’s an apocalyptic sci-fi thriller set in a world thirty years after a race of flame-wielding mutant beings called the Burnish set half the world on fire an the battle between the anti-Burnish Burning Rescue and Lio Fotia, leader of the aggressive new “Mad Burnish” mutants.

Paolo Sorrentino, director of the Oscar-winning The Great Beauty and its follow-up Youth, returns with LORO (Sundance Selects), about a young hustler named Sergio (Riccardo Scamarcio) managing an escort service who sets his sights on the egotistical billionaire Italian ex-Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (Tony Servillo) who is trying to bribe his way back into power. It will open at the IFC Center Friday.

A couple other docs opening this weekend, the first two opening at New York’s Film Forum…

Now playing is Hassan Fazili’s Midnight Traveler (Oscilloscope) about how the filmmaker received death threats from the Taliban in 2015 for running Kabul, Afghanistan’s Art Café, a progressive meeting place, so he, his wife and two young daughters must travel 3,500 miles over 3 years across four countries to get to Hungary, a journey documented via mobile phone cameras. It will open in L.A. on October 4.

Then on Friday, there’s Matt Tyrnauer’s new film WHERE’S MY ROY COHN? (Sony Pictures Classics) looks at the lawyer and power broker who was part of Joe McCarthy’s anti-Communist activities and who was pivotal in molding a young Queens developer named Donald Trump. I wanted to like this movie more because Roy Cohn is such an interesting human being in such a despicable way, but this doc really didn’t do much for me.

Opening in New York (Cinema Village) and L.A. (Laemmle Glendale) is DIEGO MARADONA (HBO Sports), the new doc from Asif Kapadia (Amy, Senna), which will show on HBO on October 1. If you don’t know international football (or soccer), the Argentine Maradona is one of the most famous footballers of all time, a bit of a legend since signing to Naples in 1984 for a record-setting fee. I haven’t watched this yet but hope to soon.

Opening at New York’s IFC Center Friday is Max Powers’ Don’t Be Nice (Juno Films), focusing on the Bowery Slam Poetry Team as they head to the national championships, and there will be QnAs almost every night in its week-long run, and then it will open in L.A. on September 27.

Completely unrelated but also at the IFC Center is a full-week run of National Theatre Live: Fleabag, screening a pre-recorded performance of Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s one-woman show that inspired her hit Emmy-nominated show from the Soho Playhousein London’s West End. Heck, I might try to get to one of these since it won’t be on television or any other format for at least a year.

After opening for “one night only” on Tuesday, Louie (The Cove) Psihoyos’ new movie The Game Changers will get a release on New York this Friday and L.A. the 27th. Exec. produced by James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jackie Chan, it explores the rise of plant-based eating in professional sports along with Special Forces trainer James Wilks and features segments on Schwarzenegger, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton, tennis player Novak Djokovic and NBA star Chris Paul.

Demi Moore, Ed Helms, Karan Soni (from the “Deadpool” movies) and Jessica Williams star in the horror-comedy Corporate Animals (Screen Media), the new comedy from Patrick Brice (Creep, The Overnight) about a corporate team-building adventure that turns to cannibalism when an office group find themselves trapped in a cave system. The movie has a great cast but the strange concept and weak screenplay really keeps the movie from delivering.

Other movies out this weekend include James Franco’s Zeroville (MyCinema), co-starring Megan Fox and Seth Rogen; Nicolas Cage’s new movie Running with the Devil (Quiver DIstribution), a drug thriller co-starring Laurence Fishburne, Barry Pepper, Leslie Bibb and more; and the award-winning Chinese drama Send Me to the Clouds (Cheng Cheng Films), opening in L.A., NY, Toronto and Vancouver.

STREAMING AND CABLE

Maybe the movie I’m most excited for this week is Zak Galifianakis’ BETWEEN TWO FERNS: THE MOVIE (Netflix), which I’m sure is going to be silly, maybe even stupid, but I’m still amused by his style of humor. I also haven’t seen the new Netflix doc Inside Bill’s Brain: Decoding Bill Gates, and I also no absolutely nothing about the movie other than what’s in the title.

REPERTORY

METROGRAPH (NYC):

On Tuesday, the Metrograph began a series called “Bleecker Street: The First Five Years” running through Thursday withsingle screenings of Debra Granik’s Leave No Trace, Sebastian Lelio’s Disobediance and Brett Haley’s I’ll See You in My Dreams with talent doing QnAs. On the weekend, the theater has special screenings of the dance film The Red Shoes   (1948) on Saturday with an introduction by Jillian McManemin – I honestly have no idea who that is. On Saturday, the Academy is back with its monthly series, this month showing Milos Forman’s 1979 musical Hair with actor Treat Williams and Annie Golden in person. On Sunday, there’s a similarly special screening of Martin Scorsese’s 1990 crime classic Goodfellas with producer Irwin Winkler and screenwriter Nick Pileggi -- $35 tickets, a little pricey for me. You also have just two more days (today and tomorrow) to see Satoshi Kon’s Millennium Actress on the big screen.

This weekend’s Welcome To Metrograph: Redux offering is Jean Vigo’s 1934 film L’Atalante,  Late Nites at Metrograph is showing Fantastic Planet(again) and the Japanese horror film Hausu (1977). This weekend’s Playtime: Family Matinees is Alfonso Cuaron’s fantasy A Little Princess (1995)
