The Boy Next World Ep. 2

I really enjoyed the second ep of the Boy Next World, the first wasn't bad but I feel like it's picking up well.

Obviously the main question is what happened to Phu in Cir's world that he doesn't have any interest in going back, and why does Jin know?

Regarding the other Phu, my main thoughts are death/traumatic incident or a break-up (maybe both?). Both would explain why Cir is so desperate to be around Phu, but seems to have no desire to go back to what would presumably be his extremely upset partner. If Phu was able to or wanted to see him, it seems unlikely he wouldn't be trying to go back.

Part of the reason I'm proposing a break-up is the opening of the first episode. Cir is fighting off car thieves, but its' clearly not his car because he goes to the bus stop after (it's also white which is the colour of Phu's car) rather than driving anywhere. Perhaps there's another explanation, but why would he leave the car if it were his and why would he protect it if it weren't Phu's? Additionally, while he's at the bus stop Phu walks past and doesn't see him, he doesn't call out either. Maybe he doesn't want to see him hurt and worry him? Maybe he's avoiding him due to a falling-out?

(Also kind of unclear which world that first scene was in, did this happen to both Cir's? Why did they switch?)

I'm assuming Jin is also from the same world as Cir. He seems to know a lot more than he's letting on, he also keeps brushing off or distracting Phu when he talks about the parallel world stuff (at least initially). Also that shot in the cafeteria in ep. 2 when he's looking at Wim...

Side-thought based on that last scene, it reads to me almost like Cir liked Phu before the cup-phone thing happened but in this world he wasn't brave enough (?) to respond. Has he just been sadly pining in this world?

I fully expect to be wrong about any or all of this but it's fun to speculate! There's a lot of fun threads to pull at.

I do like Raverne though, I think it's got a nice fancy sound to it! (I had kinda suspected it was going to be an R instead of an L, so the fact that it's SO close to Laverne except for that is hilarious to me personally.) and Dragoneye Duke is honestly probably the best translation for his title, I wasn't envying the localizers that one. :') Baur instead of Baul I was NOT expecting, but in retrospect I think his name's supposed to be a reference to the Bauru crocodile, so that actually makes way more sense!

someone else also said Meleanor has become Maleanor, which is the REALLY weird one to me, because I was so surprised it was written as Mel instead of Mal in the first place?! oh god no I can't decide which one I like better. 😭 (I wonder if they might change it to Mal...they have made romanization changes before) (like I remember House of Distraction being corrected to House of Destruction in Playful Land) (I did check and she's still Mel for now, but I dunno, they might Mal her up and some point and save me from having to make a decision about which one to use) (HECK I CAN'T DECIDE)

he never felt the love of a mother and relied on his father for all of the love and validation he needed growing up but uther never gave it to him unless he succeeded in battle - probably against druids/sorcerers. arthur never feeling like he was enough, that he was never worthy of love unless he did something for them or won a battle because that was the only time his father looked at him with a modicum of warmth.

being a prince raised to one day be king and being taught to never trust anyone, that as king he can only trust himself, and then watching his father fuck over the people of camelot and going "a king must make hard choices" but arthur never agrees with any of that!! he puts on the aloof asshole act to keep people away so he doesn't get hurt but baby boy wears his damn heart on his sleeve. he cares. SO much. he trusts everyone, no matter how many times he's been betrayed. he does everything he can for his people

he strives for their love and pride because he never got it growing up. he works his ass off to be the best king for his people that he can be, so he can be the best heir for his father that he can be, so he can be the best son for his mother that he can be - all so he can prove that he's good enough and worthy enough of love. yet time and time again, he's betrayed by those he has done nothing but be there for. time and time again, the people he's loved and trusted most have betrayed him and left him like he was nothing. proving to him time and time again that he wasn't enough, that he'll never be enough for their love or loyalty.

Sorry (not) but I find anyone who acts like Blue is making something out of nothing when she’s mad Adam’s first question is about the kissing to be like. Deeply suspicious. Of course she is mad that’s the first thing he asked her! They’ve been walking on eggshells around each other and not really communicating since the last aborted kiss attempt which is on both of them to some degree, but when he comes around to her it’s only for this and when she has so many fears and insecurities about not properly belonging in the gang because she’s a girl (which is founded based on the fact aside from Noah they’ve all been misogynistic towards her at some point even if it was passive) and not being respected, when she’s also an outsider at home because of a different thing she can’t control. And you can not say that her feeling Adam is treating her like a thing to have and not a person he connects with is unfounded he again literally “I got Blue without you!” screamed at Gansey, consistently going to her after they fight (he did it end of TRB after repugnant too) to validate himself or just generally when he’s falling apart looking for validation from her like in the apartment scene. It’s not a bad thing to seek validation from your partner and in TRB before I’d say the last quarter I think Blue and Adam were genuinely connecting and developing a friendship while also exploring their feelings/attractions to each other, which did always have elements of seeking escape or validation for both of them in different ways, but it’s dissolved into that so much now. And I do think Blue is to some degree mad at Adam because he’s here and available to be mad at when she’s also mad at Gansey for it (I don’t think they’re *in the wrong * for not inviting her but they are in the wrong for not even considering she could want to go or at least want to be in the loop, also even though it’s Gansey’s party if Adam is trying to be her *boyfriend* it was kind of his place to ask her) so she’s conveying anger at Adam when the anger is for both of them, and also more general factors she’s frustrated by, but also Adam has the exact same response of channeling emotions that aren’t solely about Blue through their fights (and to his credit he is self aware that he does this) so again crucifying Blue for it is whack imo. Also to check myself on shipper-brain for the Adam-Gansey aspect of it, well obviously I read that here as a factor because I’m me, but for arguments sake on the premise Adam has No feelings about Gansey that are anything other than platonic Blue would still have a right to be mad about him prioritizing his platonic male friends over her and treating them with more respect, obviously, because misogyny exists (also these are not two contradictory readings in that I think they’re both factors. Signed an Adam Stan).

I really can't say enough good things about the expression work they did with rook in this scene, the way you can see it all dawn for them and all the little nuances along the way. I've had some trouble at points to get rye's more distinct features to play nice with whatever the facial animation setup is (still always tweaking. every day in every way we get closer and closer etc., getting the mouth to move just right is such a struggle for many scenes lol), but in this it really worked out. perfectly. yeah, that is exactly how he would emote and I would DIE for him. just. look at him. his hard tight little mouth like a child furiously holding back tears. the shifts between vulnerability and anger, the swell of fury rising through that angry option. the way you can see his eyes go wide at hearing the companion's voices and how he immediately realizes that joining them means leaving varric behind. the warring emotions at 'you're not alone' -- confusion, wanting to protest, knowing varric is right but maybe not quite how yet. so much of the arc I'd envisioned for Rye going in hinged on this scene, and I'm so glad that when I got there it worked out so well. yeah. that's how it happened.

(I also like that you can see how tough it is for varric to be faced with 'I can't do this alone' and having to let rook down, in a way. it's the one time he glances away from rook not contemplatively but reflexively. looking up at the path they're going to have to walk -- without him. having to send them off with nothing but words and hope and your faith in them, because you can't be there with them anymore. and he only lets himself look sad when rook turns their back to him for a moment. the parent feelings in that. ouch aou aough I'm. fhsdjkfhas. ow. considering how little time rook and (plausibly real) varric actually spend on screen together, they really pack the animation so full of information and meaning when you look closely.)

also a true blink and you miss it moment but uh

the entire basis is the idea that Corn in Future retconned og JSR Beat as leader/founder of the GGs (is beat being leader in the og even CANON?) so Corn and Beat are the Myras. no it's not a joke funny enough to justify how many hours i sunk into drawing these. no attempt was made to change the setting, assign most of the other cast, or otherwise make this au hold up to ANY amount of scrutiny. if i tried to make this actually work somehow then i'd REALLY end up too far gone. also i keep calling myrtle!beat "Meat".

The thing that I feel like I have a hard time getting across when I offer a quick summary of Wyn's backstory is that her brother Came Back Wrong, but it was still HIM who came back.

It wasn't a tainting of the soul or some deception by the being that brought him back. It wasn't a function of the revival. I don't even think this is something that would necessarily happen to EVERYONE upon revival in Wyn's typical fantasy d&d world. When Atticus came back wrong, he didn't come back wrong because of the way he was brought back - he came back wrong because of HIM.

His fear of death was so profound that he dedicated his life to trying to push it back. It was his life's work, the all-consuming thought that Wyn used to have to drag him away from just to get him to eat regularly. He was so afraid of waking up one day to find that his time had run out that he was willing to put all of that time towards staving it off. What happens when someone like that is suddenly and irrevocably thrust into the heart of their greatest fear?

In Atticus's case, I think it possessed him. You know how people who are afraid of something become fixated on finding out more about it, about knowing EVERYTHING they possibly can? I think what happened was a function of that. It's a bit of a Jane Prentiss situation. "The song is so beautiful and I am so very afraid," etc, etc,. Wyn dragged him away from the heart of his fear after he had already succumbed to it, and all of the dedication and fervor that he had for running away suddenly became pointed like an arrow directly back towards death. Obsession. Possession. What is the endless sprawl death if not another kind of immortality?

So I think Atticus came back already preloaded with a cult-like worship for his own end. I think he was so afraid and so fascinated and so wholly in the grip of his own overwhelming awe that when he came back, he came back as someone that Wyn didn't know. But it WAS him. He DID know her. He DID love her. He DID, in his own way, want to make her happy. And when he eventually pulled himself out of his own fear-drugged stupor to recognize the terrible cost that she was STILL ACTIVELY PAYING to bring him back...well. Knowing that he was siphoning off her life to extend his own, the one that wanted so badly to end? It just didn't seem like the thing a loving brother would prolong.

So he didn't.

And I'm very interested to think about the implications of what Wyn would do if she knew that.

now im thinking of the agnians being weirded out that kevesi dont have core crystals. taion is simply the most fun to imagine quietly freaking out about this. what are some other bodily differences? the agnians wanting to touch eunie's feathers is fun, but maybe lanz has a different body temperature. noah's got nothing tho. he's just lame and boring lmao

I think Noah might actually be the most disturbing out of the Kevesi for that very reason, especially to Taion as their healer, like, he looks so close to being "normal" (Agnian) except he doesn't feel like an Agnian on an etheric level so he sits right at the bottom of the uncanny valley. Eunie and Lanz, at least, have significant physiological differences that put them firmly in the "other" camp.

The same goes in reverse, Eunie actually hits a jackpot being paired with Taion, the most "normal" Agnian, it raises the incredulity ceiling for her to be dealing with the differences in Agnian physiology by experiencing it first as this Normal Guy being extremely weirdly and abnormally put together, it's like an on-ramp to dealing with the weirder blended physiology of Mio and the straight-up magical of Sena.

Agnians might just also be easier to understand, since they all exist on various points on a continuity, none of them are "fully" anything, all of them have a little bit of Blade in them, whereas Kevesi are, like... you pretty much have to learn to know homs, High Entia and machina physiology, and there doesn't seem to be a lot of overlap, even if High Entia and homs heritages have fully blended (which I don't think is possible, I think High Entia genes are dominant).

I think the plot is much stronger if Kevesi and Agnians inherently have that "are you even human????" response to each other, something just feeling.... off because they're essentially dealing with...not-quite-mirrorverse versions of what they're used to dealing with, I think that makes the text about recognising the personhood of the other, and learning to appreciate them, to seeing the common enemy as someone who wants you to hate the other just for being the other. But I do, also, like it when Taion suffers and is uncomfortable :D

Did anyone ask me for this? No. Will I post it anyway? Absolutely. The writers in this fandom are too good.

The first fanfic writer I want to shout out is @prince-liest (ao3 link)

I absolutely love their get cared for idiot (Alastor) series (not the official name but they called it that in one of their asks jokingly so it's now the default in my head).

Knock, Knock! It's Your Worst Fucking Nightmare! (this fic gets it!!!! This is what I meant when I said Alastor is growing a heart and part of him is raging against it. He still has ulterior motives and a massive amount of pride and part of him feels like that growing fondness is getting in the way, but he can't stop it. I need to stop before this becomes a long ramble. I've written a couple thousand words on this idea, but this fic is just a better use of your time than any meta I could ever write and way more entertaining :D )

Happily Ever After, and Other Shit Nepotism Can't Buy

The Last Bus Stop in Hell, Now Boarding (Please look at the tags for content warning. Angel and Alastor body swap story.)

They're amazing at balancing on that razor's edge with Alastor where there's a heart in there (really deep) and he's unintentionally growing attached to the hazbin crew, but he doesn't lose his edge. He's still manipulative and an asshole and can easily be the scariest guy in any room. He's in hell for a reason. A+ characterization at all times.

They're so good at writing the complicated dynamics he has with the residents, especially Charlie, and I enjoy how they expand on Alastor's potential dynamic with Angel Dust.

Their series Red Roses and Dead Things consistently gut punches me.

Just like Princeliest, they are also fantastic at balancing on that razor's edge with Alastor. A+ characterization for everyone and I love how they write HuskerDust. It's so soft, especially in the aftermath fic for Learn that Even Death May Die called If My Love Is Tomorrow, I've Forgotten Yesterday (that fic hurt in the best way).

The way they explore the aftermath of Learn that Even Death May Die is incredibly impactful. They capture the unique grief that comes from the reality that there are some things you won't get closure for so well that it's painful.

I can't say enough good things about their series. Genuinely go read it.

I found @lediz-watches (ao3 link) before the first season of Hazbin Hotel dropped (I've been a fan of the hellaverse for a few years now and have been enthralled with the Hazbin Hotel pilot since I first watched it in 2020) and I really enjoy their fics.

My favorite is Suffering Kindness. I love the Charlie and Alastor dynamic they explore in this story. I think I'm just a sucker for the Charlie and Alastor dynamic in general, but this fic hits all the right notes for me. (written pre-season 1 but man is it good. 100% recommend)

LeDiz also has a lot of one-shots/collections of one-shots that are very fun.

Don't Say It

I have to shout out @ckret2 (ao3 link) and their phenomenal fic You’ve Got a Face for Radio. This is such an amazing aroace!Alastor fic. (Embarrassingly it was this fic that made me realize I was most likely aroace myself. I’d had fleeting moments of suspecting it but it wasn’t until I saw my experiences laid out in a character explicitly written to be aroace that I put the puzzle pieces together. -_- some of these passages were too relatable.) I cannot express how much I love this fic.

I also like their fics Dumpster Baby and Bitter Grapes.

I have one last writer I want to mention because this is getting really long (whoops). The last one is tiredoflofteranditsshit and their Assume He Has a Heart series (because my favorite character and how I interpret them was not obvious enough already with the fics/authors I've recommended. I had to make it more obvious).

These fics are massive (17k and 26k words) and so much fun. Definitely worth the read. Yet another series that follows up season 1 and explores Alastor’s growing connections and how he lies to himself and pushes against it. Love this series and there’s a lot to sink your teeth into :D

Lore topics I enjoy thinking about for Mass Effect Trilogy Week:

Biotics: I remember countless conversations about biotics that made me look at the wiki to check my information, replay parts of the game and in general pay attention to how it all works out. I still think there are many things about them that I don't understand right now, and that's why I love it. It makes you think! Each species will deal with it in a different way too, they have their own history with their biotics and how they use them. For humans, L2 biotics like Kaidan are always a source of wonder to me. Sure, you can picture a badass biotic like Aria and 100% she showed extreme power during the Omega DLC so that's really fascinating to me as well, but to have those implants and to be able to master Reave?! I also think the lore is not... as solid as it could be regarding how each species treats their biotics. It sometimes feels like a bit of a X-Men situation (they're different, others fear them, possible medical issues...) but it's like the writers don't want to deal with the full implications. And I really wish we could have seen a bit more artistic/cultural displays of biotics. Btw, my biotic sports headcanons are here

Lifespan: I love that each species has a different lifespan and that it really shows in how they live their lives. An asari will not look at their youth like a salarian. Honestly, I'm mad at myself because someone wrote about this in the tag and made a good commentary on it and I can't find the post again. It was about how salarians process thoughts and feelings compared to other species. I hope I can find it soon, and if so I'll reblog it. It's always a fascinating topic!

Artificial intelligence: Geth, EDI and other AIs like SAM are what I mean here. I really do think the topic of designing your own platform should come out more in this universe. I've said it a billion times before but I really want EDI to design her own platform. And I really have no answer, but I have found that all the meta about Legion was always thought-provoking. Was does individuality mean? Does Legion need individuality? Does he need to say "I" or was he better as a collective, as something "other" that was just fine as it was, but we humans just find more meaning in him becoming an individual? Even the words I use here, I'm fully aware I use "he" all the time when refering to Legion, and sometimes I wonder if that's good or not. I don't know. 

Justice system: I've made one big post about it (9 years ago haha), but I really find the Spectres fascinating, as well as each species' version of judges/soldiers/spies/agents/workers etc. And prisons.

The trade language: EVERYWHERE in the game and we have so little information compared to the Quarian's language???

And my favorite lore: everything related to the krogan. I really think it ties to what Bakara says about being her Shaman's initiation being a brutal one "But an illuminating one. You learn to appreciate the light by living in the dark."  I love that their species not because they're perfect but because they're imperfect in a way that speaks to me. They understand despair, the deepest kind. They understand anger. And they're constantly underestimated. But I find a lot of beauty, joy and humor in them. I also love that they're rarely lying or playing games, they will tell you the honest truth and you either take it or leave it.
