ok this might be hella long, but I need to scream about some details about Makoto Yuki in Persona 3 Reload, because they're so missable so I feel like nobody else has noticed or cared about them other than me!!!!

Please someone hear me out 😭 (spoilers ahead)

One underrated thing about Reload, which is my favorite thing ever, is that we get to hear Makoto's thoughts when interacting with the world around him. Compare it to FES where the game's inner dialouge is in 2nd person, Makoto's inner dialouge in Reload is in first person.

I didn't give too much attention to a Makoto's thoughts in my 1st playthrough and I think it's what made me not as attached to Makoto as I would've liked in that playthrough. But god, in my 2nd playthrough, especially after watching the movies, all of that changed...

I noticed that Makoto's thoughts genuinely change as the game progresses. You see him start off as indifferent to everything, to cherishing the memories he's made with his friends.

For instance, take a look at his thoughts on the kitchen. I don't have a screenshot of this, but at first, he doesn't really care and just sees it as another tool. But as the game progresses...

This dialouge makes me swoon every time 😭💜

One of the biggest hidden details is Makoto's inner thoughts when you interact with the book on the dorm table. He has individual thoughts on the handwriting of each member of SEES as they join, which were delightful to read in my 2nd playthrough.

But what shocked me the most was after Shinji dies, if you interact with the book, then here are Makoto's inner thoughts:

That "..." doesn't show up if you interact with the book again. This was very intentional. And god, did that hit me extremely hard. In fact, if you interact with anything involving Shinji after he passes, you can really see how much Makoto respected him :((

Once January rolls around, Makoto's thoughts change to this sweet message 😭💜

Ngl I almost teared up when I saw this for the first time. Especially since it was my 2nd playthrough, and I was actually attached to Makoto this time + I knew what was up ahead :')

Don't even get me started on Makoto's inner dialouge on March 4th. Pretty much everything interactable is changed to fit the mood of how tired Makoto is, but also how much he's appreciated the year and the memories he's made.

Like when you interact with the kitchen, his inner dialouge about the kitchen changes once last time to this (credits to alanamisako):

This shit made me burst into tears so badly 😭😭😭 "I'll never forget those precious memories" FOUL atlus, FOUL!!! His thoughts on Shinji's room change on March 4th as well 🥲

Just seeing how much Makoto had grown throughout the game, and knowing what was to come, made this, and all the other March 4th dialouge, even harder to get through in my 2nd playthrough. It also resonated with me, because I too will never forget the precious memories I've made with this game...

Things like this make me appreciate Reload so much. Interacting with every little thing is my favorite pass time in video games that allow me to do it. I've probably wasted so much time in games doing this. But most game's interactables don't have this depth, and they certainly don't change at all, even as the game and protagonist develop. I also feel like nobody else takes the time to really interact with everything or see if there's anything else to see before they progress (trust me, if a game says go left, I'm always going to go right first), and it makes me sad that so much of this, and other details, go unnoticed. I've certainly heard "I've never noticed that" a lot when sharing these sorts of things with people 😭

Things like this really help flesh out the protagonist people call "bland". I really love silent protagonist and developing their personality based on their thoughts on the world around them. I also love worldbuilding and learning about other characters through it.

And I'm trying so hard to not let Makoto take Joker's place as my favorite protagonist (cuz the rest of SEES have already done that to the PTs LOL) but it's been getting harder these days. Makoto is just so perfect! I love his growth & seeing all of his inner thoughts and combining it with movie Makoto's AMAZING characterization (plz watch the p3 movies ya'll) just made me super attached to him!! I could scream about Makoto all day. He cares so much for his friends, and it's thanks to them that he's able to appreciate the life he didn't know he could have 🥲

So I highly encourage you to interact with everything when playing Reload! From NPCs, to random things that aren't the main objective (trying to leave when you're supposed to be fighting a full moon shadow leads to some funny dialouge for instance), etc etc.. especially as the game progresses. I mean, we all laughed at the 3 coffins in the Love Hotel, and there's so many other details and foreshadowing like that I can't even get into! It really immerses you and attaches you to the protag, but also makes the end of the game hit hard...That "my eyes feel heavy" got me horribly in my 2nd playthrough after keeping up with Makoto's thoughts the entire game HOO BOY!🥲

I also recommend you do this with other games as well. Video games have always been an experience over just a game to me. And I want to experience as much of the game as I can, even silly little things like this :)

Himawari woke up tired.

She woke up feeling gross and sticky and more than a little hungry, but mostly she felt tired.

So when she was greeted with large dark circles under her eyes from the lack of sleep as she looked in the mirror, she wasn’t all that surprised. A little amused perhaps because of her almost exact resemblance to a raccoon (and her friend Shukaku) but not surprised.

Hinata took in her cheeky-looking kids with weary eyes, analyzing the trio as they stood in a line in front of her, purposefully, she knew, blocking the end of the hallway. There they stood with large grins, sparkling eyes, and their hands behind their backs, that plus the combination of their pajamas effectively made the three look adorable and suspicious all at the same time.

(And as much as she loved her kids, she didn’t feel like dealing with whatever horrific thing they managed to pull off that made them look like the kittens that ate the canaries at eight in the morning.) So, willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, Hinata gave them each a morning kiss on the forehead (which made their wicked grins turn to soft smiles) and went to the bathroom.

Burn The House Down

“I can’t believe this is what you’re worried about,” Naruto chuckled, his voice filling the room as he watched his wife pace back and forth in their living room that wasn’t actually, not really, their living room.

Hinata didn’t look up from her spot in the middle of the room as she tried her hardest to think, bringing her hands together to play with her wedding ring in a worried yet contemplative way.

Naruto watched her, her long dress following her gracefully as she went about the room. He stared at her face, finding the way her eyebrows came together as her nose would scrunch up like a curious little field mouse so adorable that he couldn’t help but smile despite the not house situation they had found themselves in.

A Few Bumps In The Road

"Himawari, don't get any closer," the voice was soft yet stern, cutting through the tense, thick air with its presence and she wanted nothing more than to be able to listen to its instructions. But she couldn't, not this time.

Not when she was so close to everything going back to normal.

With every part of her wishing she was somewhere else, she turned to her not-quite uncle with a humorless grin -- so reminiscent of her father in that moment that he took a step back -- she said, "Sorry Uncle Sasuke." She took a step forward, her eyes never moving from its targets.

"This is a sibling thing."

Do, do, do do do do!

"Sometimes I forget that we don't have triplets," Naruto starts, nonchalantly bringing his coffee cup to his lips as Hinata turned to him a brow raised and her nose scrunched in confusion.

Blinking at her dead-serious husband, Hinata decided to indulge in his craziness. (Even if she complained about it sometimes, they both knew that she loved it.) "And how's that?" she asked, taking a seat in front of him at the dinner table.

Did Someone Say Karaoke?

"Nothing better than a karaoke date to start the week, don't cha think, hime?" Naruto asked his wife with a smirk and a slight wiggle of his brows as they made their way to the karaoke place.

Hinata, who was walking beside the off-the-clock Hokage with her hand in his, responded with a playful roll of her eyes, trying to distract from the upcoming blush on her cheeks. Even after all these years together, Naruto could still find ways to make her blush like a school girl...

(And with all those years together came Naruto's beloved ability of being able to spot Hinata blushing from a mile away so, unfortunately, her troubles were for naught.)

Everything was perfect.

The sky was clear with not a single cloud in sight and the moon and the stars were shining brightly although there had been a light rain that afternoon, the grass and thus their picnic blanket was completely dry. The most important (and perfect) thing though was that Hinata looked incredibly kissable.

Unfortunately, Menma didn’t seem to think so because the perfectness of the night seemed to make him think that she wanted to discuss constellations and anything and everything about them instead of rolling around in the grass on their blanket together for some reason.

when i see your face (i can't think straight)

Sasuke rolled his eyes while Sakura giggled into her hand, their reactions to their best friend’s stupidity completely different as they watched Naruto slide down his locker onto the floor with a loving sigh, very much like a lovestruck schoolgirl.

“So,” Sakura started, sitting down in the space next to him. “What color was it this time?” she teased, already having a clue as to what color made him react this way.

Letting out another sigh, Naruto clutched his textbook to his chest (causing Sasuke to roll his eyes yet again), before he looked at Sakura with sparkling eyes. “Orange,” he said, dreamily, closing his eyes to think about the stunning smile that was flashed in his direction not even a minute ago.

i'd rather die than admit this (but i love you)

Hinata gently straightened the papers in her lap, making sure everything was in its place before she set them down on her lap once more. She held the folder close to her as she decided that she wanted to cross her legs, only to uncross them the second she placed her folder down. Ignoring the weird stares that she was getting from the person seated two chairs away from her, she picked up her papers to straighten them up again.

She paused in her tidying as the most aggravating voice in the world — and probably the universe — broke her concentration. “Pretty sure that they're not getting any straighter, Hyuuga,” the voice said with a sneer.

Naruto stared deeply into his bowl of ramen as he stirred it around lazily, trying his best to tune out the whispered conversation his friends were trying to keep him from hearing. All in all, they were doing a great job, except for the fact that they were so clearly discussing the fact that Sai had found his soulmate during his first period that all it did was make Naruto sick.

Something that Shikamaru seemed to notice as he effectively shushed the group with a loud clear of his throat, successfully making them shut up and Naruto look up from his ramen cyclone in the same second.

i check out and read a lot of these books for free via my local library by using the libby app (you can even add your friends' library cards to gain access to libraries in places you don't live). when i'm feeling like reading via audiobook, i use libro fm!

look, no one HAS TO read diversely. no one is going to be reverse fahrenheit 451'd and locked in a room with no fanfic and only books and not let out until they work their way through the entire literary canon. but reading, and reading widely, and reading diversely, is what teaches people to form their own opinions and question the things they are told. it's why they hang up stuff like "READ READ READ!!" in grade school classrooms.

we live under systems that increasingly benefit from going unquestioned. no, of course reading ASSASSIN'S APPRENTICE by robin hobb is not going to dismantle these systems tomorrow, nor probably even in our lifetimes. but doing it will help set up a world capable of doing it in the future. and until further notice, we are all part of this wretched world. might as well read a good story while we're here.

A boy no older than 14 with eyes that pierce the soul was not what you'd expected to find on Jason's couch the very first time he'd left you alone there. Jason had to dip out unexpectedly early, and had promised you run of the place until he got back so you'd slept in as long as you could and were on your way to make breakfast when you're greeted by the hell-child.

Once your initial fright wears off you realise you recognize him from a photo Jay had showed you which makes you feel slightly more at ease.

“Good morning? Damian right?” You offer as you pass him, be-lining for the coffee machine, you're gonna need caffeine if you're meeting any member of Jay's family for the first time. “Can I get you anything?”

“Alfred says it's unbecoming to sleep past 9.” Besides the initial glare he'd graced you with as you emerged from the bedroom, he doesn't even look up at you, his eyes glued to the pages of a book. Like brother like brother, you guess.

“Oh, well. Good thing Alfreds not here then.” You add a small laugh, trying to inject some humour to the situation. Damian does not respond in kind. “Is that a no? I think there's some chocolate cereal around here somewhere.”

“What do you do for work that allows you to be in my brother's home in the middle of the day?”

Jeez this kid is no-nonsense. “Or I could make pancakes, I make really good pancakes.”

“And tell me what exactly are your intentions with my baby brother?” Baby?

“I think there's some chocolate chips around here somewhere. Jason says you like chocolate. Chocolate pancakes?”

“Do you always avoid questions?”

“Are you always so intense?”

He slams the book closed and you nearly jump on the spot. He finally looks at you, really looks at you and as you stare back his features begin to soften slightly.

“I’ll have a coffee.”

You're certain from the sly look on his face that he's probably not allowed coffee. He certainly doesn't need any. But screw it, he's not your kid and if it gets him to like a little, you'll take the risk.

So you pour two coffees and join him on the couch. His questions do not cease until Jason returns about an hour later. He couldn't care less about the coffee, but he does care about Damian breaking in to interrogate his partner and immediately kicks Damian out.

Dick

Dick finds out about your existence from one of Damian’s letters, and he's subtle but pushy about meeting you. Not that you're aware. He keeps ‘dropping by’ Jason's apartment ‘just to see his lil brother’, no other reason but is told to get lost or downright ignored anytime you're there, until he decides to cut out the middle man and turn up at your home instead.

“Let me tell you, you are a hard person to get a hold of.” He informs as he invites himself through your front door.

“Um, hello Dick?” As you stare at his lush hair and sculpted abs you wonder what Alfred feeds these boys.

“Yep! I can't stay so I’ve gotta make this quick.” he gestures for you to come closer, speaking in a playful, conspiratorial whisper. “Jay doesn't know I'm here.”

That would be why he can't stay, Jason is due at your door any minute now.

“But you two seem to be getting pretty serious and I think it's important that we all get to know each other. You following?”

You nod, and he gives you the perkiest, most genuine smile. That or he has that exact look practised to a T. From what Jay tells you, either is possible.

“So, Barbara and I, that's my wife” You nod once more, you're aware of Barbara also. “have booked a table at Casa Gotica for Thursday night. We need you to get Jason there without letting on that it's a double date.”

“I don’t know.” you finally give your nodding head a break. “Jay and I don’t lie to each other.”

“Right. I can't begrudge that. Tim was actually the first to be aware of you and your relationship with his brother, however, the very real possibility of being gutted by Jason for snooping in his personal life was too high for him to make a move.

But you seeking him out is a different story; or rather, you being the first to say hi when you bump into each other in line at the grocery store is different. It would be rude not to respond to your attempts at initiating a conversation.
