You had never heard of him until he lit up the city streets with light reminiscent of a newly born sun god. You were mesmerized. You watched him catapult through the air. His face and teeth shown with a sense of danger. He looked ready to kill if nessasary. It drove you wild. SURE for a while your friends made fun of your newfound obsession. That was until... you didnt have friends anymore. You were a nice enough person! Sure, that wasnt the problem. They just got tired of not hearing about YOU. They always heard yap of the hero. “GROUND ZERO.” This, and, “GOD EXPLOSION MURDER!” That. It was time for you to take a rehab... but you were’nt aware. You were part of his cult. The highest follower. Papparazi. Spicy fan theories. FAN FICS. Oh how many nights you drooled over the scandelous drawings you blew much of your crypto currency on just to perfect. Your mind was in a haze and your heart was set on him. You went to almost every live viewing. And you were perfectly happy, and healthy... until you were’nt. You started becoming sick more often. A sense of dread filling you if you were’nt able to snuggle up to your pillow with Ground Zero’s voice. Straight. In your ear. Insomnia would creep in. But you still woke as enthusiastic as ever, because you needed money for these meets... and money, comes from work. Your co-workers, were not as polite as your friends. While you rarely spoke to them, and mostly just to the clients they could always hear it. Same as your friends. You would go to work and then be sent back home for being too sick sometimes. On one occasion your boss sent you some food, just so you’d eat. She used child tactics on you. “Ground Zero would like it if you ate your food dear.” She’d say, her soothing voice in front of you as you looked up. She’d give you a big smile. And you would eat. These. Were the only times you wouldnt talk of him. The womans heart broke everytime you talked of him. She would run her dark hands across your cheeck and softly tell you that he wasnt worth your love. She was never in the position to produce children. And she never wanted a husband. Nor did she want a wife. You were the closest to a grandchild the old woman had. So. To show your graditude you stopped. You chatted with her for hours. About you. Only you... and yourself. And that made her happy. You never thought you would get the chance to actually meet him. FOR REAL. Your eyes buldged out of their sockets. You pulled your phone out, snapping pictures of him gliding through the air. HE WAS SO GRACEFUL! He looked like an angel and you thought of crying. He roared so loud you thought he’d damage his beautiful vocal cords. He finally after a greuling battle was able to take down the stupid villain. You swooned. Eyes filling with hearts as you leaned back wistfully. If only you could touch him. Then your life would be conten- “DUMBASS LEAVE ALREADY!” You felt a harsh prod at your forehead. Blinking you righted yourself. Awestruck at the sight before you. In fornt of your own two eyes. Touching you. Was Ground Zero. You fell to your knees. Hugging his boots. “OMGOMGOMG!!!!! YOURE GROUND ZERO, I AM LITERALLY YOUR BIGGEST FAN. YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW LONG IVE WANTED TO MEET YOU!” Behind his eyes there was a look of pure malace as he stared at his feet which were covered by your body. He was tempted to blast you to peices before realising. You were just a civilian. Just a weak, little, pathetic- You looked straight up at him. Eyes of admiration glistening back up at him. A hole night sky encapsulated in the precious lenses that were your eyes. He was taken aback. Suddenly noticing the adorable smiling face that peered up at him. He was almost confused. ‘When will they stop looking at me like that?’ He thought. But the longer he stared at them... the more enrapturing they got. He shook himself form the thought and pryed you away from him. “Fuckin what?” He said almost winded. Watching as you spryly lifted to your feet. Barreling back towards him before skipping in one spot. “YEAH YEAH YEAH! OOH OOH.” You plucked a pen and notebook from your bag and shoved it towards him. He looked at it in discust. But at you? He just couldnt look away. “PLEASE PLEASE PRETTY PPLLLLLLEEEEASE SIGN THIS! YOURE MY FAVOURITE AND I ADORE YOU!” The amount of praise you put out almost nullified any sense of discust now. Witht the crowd gone and the sky darkening he sighed. But just before he could grab the objects. ‘Ill sign it! Mr. Fun Zero here wont take a chill pill for one second!” A flirtatious and somewhat goofy voice chimed in from behind him. A flash of yellow,and black passed the two of em. Chargebolt quickly wrote his alias... and his number. Followed by a black and yellow heart. Pikachu ears poking out at the top. He winked at you and handed the book back. “Youre a cutie, ya know?” He asked you retorically as you stared at the signature in confusion. “Haha! What am I asking of course you know.” He said in a friendly way. Ground Zeros fists clenched. Noticable sparks flaking out. He wanted you to whine. And to complain. To bawl and cry about how that dumb pikachu stole HIS spot. Bit you just awkardly and kindly nodded. The vibe kind of ruined now. “I uhhh... I’ll get going.” You said jabbing a finger at the opposite road. Before you could even turn around Ground Zero snatched your book and held it over his head. You almost pouted. But he motioned for the pen. You squealed in joyous glee, as you handed it to him. He turned his head around. Sticking his tounge out angrily at Denki. He wrote three things. His real name. His number. And a note... “Ill always watch over you.~Ground Zero.” You watched in absolute astonishment at the scene. He gave the book back to you. Leaning in to close a distance, ‘Why the fuck are you doing this?’ He asked himself. Furious. ‘It feels right.’ He rebuttled. As he handed the book back to you he made sure to graze your fingertips. Keeping his serious, and stern look on. “You better be going back home soon Teddy Bear. Dont want you getting hurt.” He turned you around for good measure. Making sure to lightly tap right above your ass to make you flustered. Which you were. Immensely. Your face heated up like the surface of a blue star. Blood pouring from your nose to your cheeks. You whipped around and bowed several times. Getting a bit of blood on the ground. “THANK YOU SO MUCH. Uhh I UUHH. BYE BYE!” And with that you zipped off. Zooming straight back to your apartment and falling asleep straight as you locked the door and collapsed on the couch. Bakugou stayed behind. An inner quarrel raging in his mind. ‘TEDDY BEAR WHAT THE FUCK? “WHY THE HELL DID YOU DO THAT! ‘You tapped their ass what the fuck you perv? ‘They liked Denkis more than yours. ‘I wanna see them writhing beneath me. He tried to shake them. Flustered horribly by these thougts. HE HAD ONLY JUST MET THEM! He needed to calm down. Then a voice breached all his other thoughts. “Their blood looks tasty.” Denki was taken aback. And now was moonwalking all the way back to his other patrol area. Bakuhou didnt care, and insteasd just knealt down. Swiped a bit of the blood off the pavement and licked his finger. He could physically feel his pupils expand. Wider than they ever had before. He smirked. A tastse of something sweeter than kicking a villans ass, or dragging Deku through the mud. Now he had a target... and they werent getting away. Why would they want to anyway? “

favorite dynamic(s) with said character: i think i like pretty much everything i saw on screen with her. batcat are wonderful, selina and ivy are great (tho everything they have done witht them in late seasons gives me a headache), and i LOVE her and bridgit! these two episodes with firefly are awesome! also someone on my tl suggested hate-dynamic between selina and valeska twins and i remembered how much i love this “wrong answer, freak” line she said to jerome

least favourite dynamic(s) with said character: i really tried to remember anything i dislike even slightly, but i don’t think i have these. selina is such a well-written and complex character, and even if some dynamic is not my favourite it’s still interesting and i can’t hate it

a random headcanon: sorry, but i will pass this one. i can’t remember anything for her and, as i said, i’m bad at headcanoning stuff if its not barnes or tetch

general opinion over said character: again, selina is a great character, and i have a huge respect for her. i know this part turned out too sweet, but i like her, i really do! (i know you probably expected some controversial hot takes but you choose the character i really like and respect, sorry :D)

favorite dynamic(s) with said character: i don’t think that i need to say how much i love barnes x tetch, but i will say it again anyway. everytime when i start to describe why i got so obsessed with them i just stuck with words. i feel like giffing is the only way to show my love to them. but i will try to explain anyway

(i will start with the most obvious ones, of course) the fact that barnes is not only infected with alice’s blood, but is the first character (if we aren’t counting that creepy alice’s landlord) to be infected with it on screen. he learns about blood’s effect with us, the audience, forced to show on himself why it’s so terrifying

the fact how much tetch is obsessed with his sister and with her blood (controversial opinion, but i think it’s hinted in canon that tetch loves alice mostly for her blood and leastly for other reasons)

the fact that they made alice a sibling to hatter in this adaptation, just to connect her with him even more, literally on biological level, which is very important in all virus situation

the fact that first half of third season is called “mad city” and it’s about obsession and madness and that it’s perfectly fit for these two

the fact that barnes is “the corrupted” trope and tetch is “the corrupter” trope and i think barnes is the perfect victim for tetch siblings: mentally fragile, traumatized, has no friends or lovers or anyone else who can support him, relies very much on his ideology which can easily be turned against him and very sensitive to any mind games

the fact that both of them are this type of characters which have complex and distant relationship with reality - reality which they created themselves (barnes killing that child, traumatizing himself and creating his comfort ideology about law just to cope with what he has done and what he could have done if he didn’t take control of his violent urges < > tetch falling in love with his sister and abusing her, refusing to believe that she doesn’t love him, convincing himself in their great love and mutual connection and bending and destroying real world to please his wonderland)

the fact that they both are the only main characters which mental state goes rapidly worse from 3x04 to 3x08 and the cause is the same - alice

the fact that in 3x07 barnes is the only one who actually tries to catch tetch and stop virus from spreading while fighting his own infection and keeping it in a secret

the fact that accidently revealing his infection to tetch puts barnes in very vulnerable position, yet he still came to tetch in arkham to ask about the blood, knowing how easily tetch can manipulate him into doing anything he wants to, just because barnes is this desperate to stop this, especially after brutally killing someone

the fact that barnes is heavily color-coded (is the even a word or did a just make this one up?) in blue, which you can easily see if you watch almost any episode with him, and, it’s gonna sound far-fetched, reminds me of traditional color of alice’s dress

the fact that during 3x05-3x07 barnes is obsessed with tetch, to the point where he yell at random people “where is jervis tetch/what do you know about jervis tetch?” (yeah, that actually happend, i’m not making this up)

(and my favourite one) the fact that tetch’s idea to shape alice out of barnes is directly plays on barnes’ biggest fear - to lose himself and become someone else, someone with unstable violent desires, and that fear is driving force behind his “law above all else” mindset

also i like the idea of tetch and barbara’s one night stand. i don’t know why, they look hot together ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

least favourite dynamic(s) with said character: uuuuuuuuhhhhhhhhh this is gonna be awkward. i know you like jerome and crane and tetch’s interaction and the whole legion of horribles thing, so i’m not gonna bring full negativity here, i will just say that i don’t really get the hype around them. also i can’t see tetch as a team player

i also have complicated feelings towards tetch and gordon, i mean, hatter torturing gordon is fucking hillarious, but i dislike gordon and any relationship with him anyway, especially if it’s “villain is obsessed with gordon because gordon is so Complex and Not Like Other Cops and Evil Deep Down and you get the point). that’s why i don’t even know what to think about most tetch scenes: at one hand they are great, on the other hand it’s still “villain obsessed with gordon” scenes which we have seen for a billion times already

a random headcanon: as i said, hatter to me is a villain who does everything on his own and will not tolerate anyone trying to command him, that’s why i don’t think he’d ever work with someone in team

if writers actually continued with tetch and barnes dynamic, i think tetch would make another plan, this time to convice barnes to see his side of things and turn into his alice, but not by force: tetch will not use hypnosis nor he will point a gun at someone barnes cares about, instead he will make a complicated mind games and careful manipulation, just so barnes didn’t even had a thought that tetch wants him to do something he doesn’t and turns to tetch willingly

general opinion over said character: the best and my favourite villain. i don’t give a fuck what people say about him, he is the creepy as he needs to be and you can’t take this away from him just to make him less awful. tetch is amazing!

nathaniel barnes

sexuality headcanon: i was thinking about him being gay, or ace, or aro, or all of these things. it may sounds stereotypical that a man who doesn’t have relationships with women or anyone at all is gay/ace, but i just feel like it suits him

gender headcanon: sometimes i think about him as a trans man because i love to project myself on him. also we are the same height, i googled :3

favorite dynamic(s) with said character: i’m not gonna copy and paste what i wrote up there, don’t worry, i think you get my point very well

i like to think about barnes and bullock, because they have interesting dynamic in the show, and also because i like to imagine barnes in somewhat normal (as much as any relationship with him can be normal) relationship, where he has someone he can care about and do not have to face his demons every day

also, as much illogical this may sound due to what i typed earlier, i think one-sided barnes and gordon are very interesting dynamic. one-sided because i can’t imagine gordon caring about anyone, unlike barnes, who definitely have a very complicated mix of emotions towards him, and it’s amazing how barnes went from thinking he found someone just like him to hating gordon with burning passion. especially i like the scene in 2x15, where barnes caught gordon and send him to prison, but not before he expressed all the spectrum of grief, anger and disappointment, experiencing the full mental breakdown. i’m not gonna think about the fact that they turned barnes into another villain who’s obsessed with gordon, nothing after 3x08 happened

least favourite dynamic(s) with said character: i don’t think anyone except me even remember these scenes, but i hate scenes between barnes and lee in third season, because of how much ooc barnes behaves himself in these scenes. lee is just a medical examiner, who’s never caught barnes’ attention, leaved her job at the gcpd at all, and suddenly in season three he is so welcoming towards her and read her praises about how much they missed her? yeah, isn’t forced at all

a random headcanon: he and bullock had sex once right after getting drunk. it’s was funny and very awkward and they agreed to never mention it again

if more serious - i think virus is causing him not only mental suffering, but also physical. there is a few scenes in canon where they hinted that there’s also phisical pain in his body, as if virus wanted to torture him even more

oh, how could i forget my main headcanon - barnes is a two-face, and after completely giving up to alice he tears half of his face with his bare hands, to give himself his two-faced look (i saw a comickbook panel where harvey dent actually did something like this, and it’s inspired me to think about this)

it’s not like headcanon, more speculation, but my idea about infected barnes is that he enjoys not just killing someone, but doing it the most brutal way possible, using his bare hands to do horrible suffering - riping the head off (as we saw in the show), tearing the body limb by limb while the person is still alive, tearing off the skin and flesh. it’s also important to him to confront first the person before the murder, so they know and realise what excatly barnes is gonna do to them, what excatly are their sins and their punishment

general opinion over said character: this man means so much to me. i lcare about him deeply and i don’t care how sentymental it sounds towards fictional character. i love him.

A Little Push

Sooo.... I’m obsessed witht the idea of Emma and Zoey as friends who won’t admit it, and, well, after writing many bants for them, this suddenly had to happen. You can blame @bi-gstupid and @nocoffeeforoldmen for enabling me.

Content: Zoey/Emma, drinking, casual hook up, mild sexual content, hints of Paulkins in the end bc they are soulmates ok? ----

Thinking back on it, Emma should have known they were heading towards this. However, it still took her by complete surprise when it happened. She glanced to her left, where Zoey was dozing off, with her hair splayed out over all the many pillows, under the sheet that didn’t fully cover her breasts. Huh.

They had been out drinking. A tradition they had developed over the last month and a half. Nora had broken her ankle and while she stayed at home, she had left Zoey in charge. On paper that sounded horrible, but since Zoey now was the boss, she had no one to suck up to, and that made her a lot more tolerable. Emma almost even enjoyed their shifts together. Not fully though, since Zoey and her friends were doing a production of Les Mis and Zoey would sing the Fantine songs over and over. But Zoey was a good drinking buddy. Hot enough to get free drinks and not selfish enough to abandon Emma for just anybody. She held her liquor well and talked shit about the other people in the bar.

Today they had been drinking beers mostly and having a laugh over that customer guy who was interested in Emma and not very subtle about it, but never got the nerve to do more than polite small talk. It was somewhat endearing, and it wasn’t like he was unattractive. Emma kind of enjoyed the polite small talk. He usually let her vent a little over whatever annoyed her that day. Zoey kept insisting she should date him. Or, in her words, totally bone him.

“I’m not gonna bone him,” Emma insisted.

“You’re so boring,” Zoey said and emptied the beer glass in front of her. Then she wiped her mouth with the back of her hand. Classy. “He really looks like he could use a good roll in the hay.”

“And therefore, I should do it?” Emma asked, eyebrow raised. She lifted her own glass and took a sip.

“You also need a good roll in the hay,” Zoey said with a sly grin. “Finish your beer, old lady. I’m getting us another round.” Then she stood up and left Emma to fume over being called an old lady. The other round turned out to be drinks this time. Then another beer. Another drink.

And suddenly it was the middle of the night and Emma was feeling perfectly drunk and ready to lie down. They emptied their glasses and got up, gathering their things. Outside a light drizzle was in the air. It felt nice and cool on Emma’s face and she stood for a moment with her eyes closed and enjoyed the sensation on her skin. A cool breeze brought out goosebumps on her arms and legs. She felt less tired now.

She opened her eyes and looked up at Zoey. “Wanna split a cab?” she asked.

Zoey looked at her for a moment, an expression in her eyes Emma couldn’t read. Her gaze travelled up and down Emma’s body and she bit her lip. And then, instead of answering, she had stepped forward, leaned down and kissed her.

What the fuck?

Emma froze, taken by surprise by the softness of Zoey’s lips. Zoey pulled back and gave her a questioning look. Almost defiantly asking Emma what she was going to do now. Emma stared at her, lips parted and heart pounding. Then she placed her hand on Zoey’s neck and pulled her into another kiss.

Zoey didn’t hesitate and immediately wrapped an arm around Emma’s waist, while deepening the kiss. She tasted like her last drink – rum and coke – and she smelled nice. Her body was soft and curvy against Emma’s, but there was nothing soft about the way she kissed. It was needy and hungry, with tongue and a hint of teeth. After several minutes of kissing and hands that got more and more curious, Zoey pulled back and with heavy breathing said, ‘I would like to split a cab.”

And that was how Emma found herself in Zoey’s apartment, making out against a hallway closet. It had been ages since she last hooked up with a girl, let alone someone she knew already, but Zoey’s feverish kisses, and hands under her shirt were causing her blood to boil and her body to yearn for more.

They were both still in their Beanies uniforms and Emma started to undo Zoey’s buttons fast and pushing the shirt off her shoulders, exposing creamy skin and a thin lacey bra. She trailed her fingers down the exposed chest, ghosting past the nipples and continuing down her stomach.

Zoey was undeniably hot. Pretty face, and annoying and distracting mouth and nice legs. Her eyelids fluttered as Emma touched her and it was incredibly satisfying to look at. Zoey kissed her again, more urgently, shoving her hand into Emma’s shorts, not even bothering to open them.

They stumbled backwards through the apartment, until Zoey opened what Emma assumed was the bedroom door. Zoey didn’t hesitate, shoving Emma unto the bed and straddling her, sending her a victorious eyebrow waggle.

They ended up having sex for what felt like hours. Whenever one of them was done, the other one took over. It was practically a competition to see who could give the other the most and the best orgasms. Finally, they both rolled away and caught their breaths.

“Sex with women is so fun,” Zoey grinned, lifting her head and resting on her elbow. “I’ve always wondered what sleeping with an older woman was like.”

Emma crossed her arms and frowned. “I’m not that much older than you.”

Zoey just giggled. “You take everything so seriously.” Then she stretched out on her back and closed her eyes. “Goodnight, Emma.”

Well, that was that Emma supposed. She just fucked Zoey from work. Zoey, who was rude and lazy and flirted with customers to get more tips and always sang some new musical theater song or practiced scales. Zoey, who was the only person she knew, who matched her level of shit-giving, who was really hot and a good kisser. Emma hadn’t thought of their bickering as flirting, but maybe it had been. There was some tension between them and now they had acted on it.

She fell asleep after turning around a few times to get comfortable, and woke up to sunlight and an arm stretched out over her. She turned her head and groaned at the sight of Zoey behind her.

“Move,” she said, lifting her arm off.

“Sorry,” Zoey mumbled and rolled away, “I’m used to spooning my boyfriend.”

“Your boyfriend?” Emma asked.

“Sam is kind of my boyfriend. I don’t know. We’re not exclusive, if that’s what you’re worried about,” Zoey answered, sitting up and rubbing her eyes. “He gives good dick. But you were much better at oral,” she winked. Emma rolled her eyes.

“Oh really? The gross cop dude isn’t good at going down on women? I’m shocked,” Emma said sarcastically.

“Was that your way of saying thank you Zoey, you were good too?”

“Thank you, Zooeeeey, you were good too,” Emma mocked. Zoey threw one of her many pillows after her.

“Anyway, I’m glad it’s not weird. You’re an asshole, but I really wanted to fuck you,” Zoey said, standing up and walking naked around her room, picking up discarded clothes. There were a few marks on her from last night.

“Likewise, I guess?” Emma shrugged, “we agree this was just fun, right? Not a big deal?”

“Of course,” Zoey grinned, “sex is no big. Speaking off, you really should fuck the guy from Beanies.”

“But now I have gotten that roll in the hay,” Emma said with a smirk, “so now there is no reason.”

“Babe, there is always a reason,” Zoey winked, pulling on clean underwear. “I just got your machine started again. You’ll wanna get laid again in no time.”

Emma bit her lip as she thought it over. What the fuck was she talking about? “Did you-“

“Oh, fuck you, you gave me hickeys,” Zoey said, inspecting herself in the mirror. Emma smirked.

“And you fucking liked it,” she responded, climbing out of the bed. Zoey had been whimpering and begging for more when she gave them. From the look in Zoey’s eyes, she remembered as well. Emma went searching for her clothes and got dressed quietly. She really needed to brush her teeth. Zoey walked her out, still only dressed in underwear.

“See you at work,” she said, and Emma did finger guns back at her.

“See you,” she replied.

She spent the day sleeping eating greasy carbs and then more sleeping. She woke up to her Monday shift. It was one of the long days and she wasn’t looking forward to it. Zoey was in the break room, grinning when she saw her arrive. She hadn’t buttoned her shirt yet and the hickey was visible. Emma got images of her mouth against Zoey’s skin and her hand between her legs. She exhaled and fought the sudden arousal at the thought.

The customers kept coming, everyone else was clearly as tired and in need of coffee this Monday as she was. Emma noticed several cute girls, with pretty eyes and full lips, in dresses that hugged their curves. She noticed a few men, with sharp cheekbones or nice shoulders. Zoey was right, her machinery had started back up. A customer spilled a little as he took his frappe, and Emma wiped the table down.

“Hi,” a nervous voice said, and she looked up into remarkably blue eyes, “I’ve got an easy one for you. Just a cup of black coffee.”

Emma smiled at him, and it made his whole face light up. She poured him the coffee, keeping an eye on him at the same time. He was tall and cute. She accepted the payment, noticing his impressive full lips and that he had broad shoulders underneath the suit jacket. When she handed him the coffee, his fingers brushed against hers and she felt tingles run from her fingertips up to her elbow.

eleonora langston + finnley hawthorne: instantly love the idea of them together simply because they are both sitting at the 'we married into the family and the lifestyle' table, both because of their mother's too. and that feeling of not quite truly belonging but at the same time enjoying every single perk of the life they have now. i'm thinking the families could know each other for a long time and so they always go on vacations at the same time, and their fathers work together here and there so they are always meeting. and then, ellie and finnley are just leaving mid dinner to get on a plane and go to paris because finnley feels like having a croissant tonight. finnley is probably obsessed with her and she could have him wrapped around her fingers because he will easily simp. maybe they have a bit of a will they won't they relationship going on, they are always together when they meet and everyone knows about his crush, everyone sees them together but he's also known for never sleeping alone and never really had a real relationship so there's that.

keller langford + sarah martins: ahem! so sarah is a new muse of mine, i literally haven't added her to my blog so you get her first okay. long story short sarah fell in love with a guy. he was gorgeous, a very good hockey player, popular around college and all that jazz. (you'll know him soon, maam) anyways it their first year of college, she gave him her heart on a silver plate only to have him humiliate her by sleeping with one of her friends, telling everyone they were never truly together just having fun. as revenge, sarah wrote an essay for a class (she's a creative writing major) about this rich guy who was too weak to let people love him, she published it around campus and everyone pretty much knew who she was talking about. after that she became a bit of an outcast, everyone loved the hockey players and so they all took his side instead. soooo, you say keller is involved in many extracurricular activities, maybe they end up in the same club together...forced to interact. him using his money to get things easier and bending the rules? sarah would absolutely despise him from the second they met, and cue to a very sexy enemies to lovers plot.

francine hopkins + arthur hawthorne: i went back on the plot inspo channel on our server to look for some inspo and hehe... i’m feeling this for these two. i don’t think you got arthur yet and i don’t know miss francine so HELLO. arthur is just a very destructive man, will get himself fucked up in a bathroom by the end of the night if things don’t go the way he planned them to go. will get too drunk to walk himself home after his father gives him some hard time at work and i feel like francine can relate lmao. think they could get very destructive together, probably lashing out a lot. they both that very complicated relationship with their parents, living under their shadows and trying to come out.

jackie fowler + jack hughes: last one i promise! jack is...another new muse. a very dumb and impulsive boy witht he best intentions. i have his board here and it still needs a lot of work but i think we could work this plot for them. jack..does not get in touch with his feelings very often. he is a romantic deep deep down and the most loyal person you will ever meet but understanding his feelings is just...complicated. i'm thinking they could be long time friends, maybe even hooked up once and it didn't go any further so they just stayed friends (maybe their significant others were always jealous of their friendship and that's how they get to the whole fake dating thing?? i don't know) but jack is the perfect type of dumbass to start something like that thinking it's the greatest idea and end up catching feelings after a while.

Top 15 Star Trek TOS Episodes (Part One)

I debated on doing this until I did the second watchthrough/reviews... but heck with it. I don’t see it changing too terribly much after and I thought it would be fun. It’s been a fun ride with TOS and I didn’t expect to love it, but here we are. It ain’t a perfect show, but a good one with good characters, strong themes, and just the right amount of intrigue and silliness. I had a blast watching it, but let’s face it, some episodes are better than others. Some are goofy but enjoyable, some... well, they tried. Everyone’s got what they like and dislike, and these are the ones that I liked best. All is only my opinion, so take it with a grain of salt. So to finally cap off this watchthrough before I start the second one and also plunge into TNG, here is the first half of my favorite TOS episodes~

#15. Bread and Circuses

I didn’t realize this until I saw someone else point it out... but this is essentially Star Trek’s version of The Hunger Games, only combined with Roman gladiators. We have our main trio get captured by the government whom have already caused another Starfleet captain to succumb and he sentenced his entire crew to death. Thus we have Kirkg ivent he option of either doing the same, or he can remain in defiance and risk Spock and McCoy’s lives. Either way, he loses. It’s a good episode, showing Kirk given one of the most sadistic choices that you can give him... and yet he doesn’t break. Oh he gets plenty of hardship. He makes the choice to keep the crew form beaming down, which morally is te best decision. After all, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. Kirk, unlike Captain Merik, chooses to preserve his cew’s safety as a captain should. Whatever happens to him makes no difference... but because Spock and McCoy are with him, him making that chocie means that they suffer theconsequences as they are not only thrust into gladitorial combat for their lives, bt Kirk is forced to watch and can do nothing. He tries to when Bones is down, but restrained form doing so. But even then he doesn’t back down or even consider it. Merik may have thrown away his whole crew, but like Hell Kirk is going to and concerning the other two, he accepts execution after Spock breaks the rules to save Bones, emphasizing the point more. It;s a really god episode to show just how much Kirk truly follows that responsibility.

We also have some great Spock/McCoy content here as the episode does put their relationship int he spotlight a bit. Their relationship is the most interesting to me so this was a great one. They bicker pretty much all episode with even the other guy they got caught with asking if they’re enemies, which Kirk just replies that even those tow don’t know. But I think if there’s any doubt that they don’t care about each other, this one promptly shuts it up. Spock, despite knowing that he can’t, defends McCoy and saves his life. This leads tot he excellent scene int he cells where Spock is trying to figure a way out, despite fully well knowing that he can’t break through the bars. Logically it would be pointless to continue fruitless efforts, but he tries to anyways. When McCoy tries to thank him for saving him, with Spock both hiding behind his usual logical shell while still focusing on the futile escape effort. Thus we get McCoy confronting him about being afraid of living and not knowing how to handle even one warm feeling. It’s a really good scene performed excellently by Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley and is just a really good insight into their relationship. I’ll keep from going into any huge detail for if that review project makes it this far, but still an excellently performed scene, especially when it caps off with McCoy simply saying that he’s worried about Jim too, the one thing that the two CAN agree on without doubt.

This is at fifteen mainly because of a few small factors. I only know a few things about Roman history so anything about it went over my head and the ending also baffled me likely due to that. We also have it implied that Kirk did... it with a slave girl. Mind you the slave girl went to him and again it’s implied. But that still makes me feel... very uncomfortable once the girl did it under orders, and therefore not fully without consent. I’m gonna have to watch it again when I dot he more in-depth analysis, but... yeah. The ending also leaves without a real resolution to the planet, remaining as they are until they eventually fall just like the actual Rome did. I guess that was the intention, but... just kinda sucks that nothing truly got accomplished. Still from a character standpoint, it was a really good one for the Triumvirate and a great watch.

#14. For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky

So for those who have been following me since I began this venture, you know that McCoy is my absolute favorite character. So when we got to a McCoy-centric episode, I was excited! And overall, it was a good one. Not one of the best, but perfectly fine. We have McCoy diagnosed with a terminal illness and given a year to live. When he and the other two transport onto a meteor-esque spaceship, they encounter the priestess Natira and her people headed for essentially a promised land witht he ship controleld by The Oracle. As Kirk and Spock try to learn more, McCoy is left with Natira who has grown smittenw ith hima dn wishes for him to remain as her mate. Sadly, I feel like this pisode wasted a lot of potential. Bones, the Chief Medical Officer who is always taking care of everyone else, is now the sick one and has only a eya rleft, if event hat. But the only real signs of this is he’s a little weaker than normal, which tbf it was just diagnoses so he may not have the most severe symptoms bu it also kidna makes the fact feel... less urgent. Using that time to set up himw ith Natira also felt wasted since we have the potential of a very emotional story where McCoy sis truggling with his lfie and the others have to come to terms that e’s going to die and likely struggle to find some way, any way to save him... and we spend it with a Girl of the Week who we’ll never see again and on a romance that while it is kinda sweet, ultimately leaves zero impact. It just feels like there was so much wasted potential and the emotional weight that you DO get... it feels less strong if you don’t know McCoy’s history. We know it now cause of supplementary material and such, butt he audiece of the 60’s certainly didn’t, hence why this is fourteen on the list.

That being said, the episode is still good. What makes up for the lack of impact about McCoy’s status and lack of history is DeForest Kelley. The man put his all into this episode (he did in every episode, but especially here when he gets ot be center stage), expressing McCoy’s sadness and loneliness as he talks to Natira perfectly. You can feel that loneliness, that longingness for what Natira’s offering him, that need to just have... some kind of happiness and intimacy that he was just never able to truly have, especially now. He just feels so... sad and vulnerable. Even though we’ve seen him interact romantically with women before, he comes off as so nervous and uncertain about what he’s doing. Like it’s been so long since he’s been intimate with anyone that he is at an utter loss on what to do with it. Natira essentially takes the lead and is even perfectly fine with caring for him in the limited time that he has left. There is someone willing to be with him and to love him for the first time in who knows how long and willing to continue to do so despite him dying... is it any shock that he chose to remain? And even then he did so in part to save Kirka and Spock from death when they got caught... and even then when he found out how to get the ship on it’s actual course and out oft he way of danger, he called them immediately for help. Yeah he almost got his brain fried for it which tbf he didn’t know would happen, but it still shows how selfless he really is, still placing others well-being before his own. As a good doctor would and should.

We also have Kirk and Spock’s reactions to the news. Kirk only knows because Chapel pretty much forced Bones to tell him and the man looks like a kicked puppy when told. He even tells Bones that he doesn’t have to go on the mission with them when normally he’s all gung-ho about dragging him along, only allowing it because this time Bones actually wants to go. Spock finds out after they all get zapped with Bones taking longer to wake up/being briefly unrsponsive, where Kirk admits it to him. Spock is noticibly concerned, emphasized when he holds onto McCoy’s arm for a good 30 seconds just to help the man sit up. McCoy can already tell that he knows before Kirk say it...a dn chooses to just let it be and get back to the matter at hand. Then there’s McCoy after he made his decision and faces the two for as far as he knew the final time. Kirk argues with him and is all but begging him to come back since otherwise he’s gonna die, which McCoy refuses since...well, he’s gonna either die from collision or being shot down, or he dies of xenopolycythemia. Either way he’s on borrowed time, so why not at least let him live it hacving a shot at happiness? Kirk is upset. Spock is as upset as a Vulcan will express. McCoy’s not happy about it, but firm in his decision... so firm it kinda makes the end where he does decide to go back kind of a juxtaposition, but I ain’t complaining either. The cure is also too convenient, but again not complaining. It doens’t seem like that much of an episode at first glance, but once you sit down and reallye xamine it even if you know nothign about McCoy’s backstory or peornsal life, it relaly leaves an impact. Again, a testemant to Kelley’ performance. As such even wit it’s issues and waste of potential, I adore it~!

#13. Obsession

I don’t see this one talked about much, but I found this one... well I hate to say the word but fascinating. What can I say? I’m a sucker for character studies, and BOY do we have a good one with Kirk here. In this episode we have a mysterious gas creature thing killing the crew and eventually get into The Enteprrise. Kirk reacts badly to it. Why? Well his crew dying of course, but the big reason is because he’s dealt with this creature before when he was a lieutenant where due to hesitaitng for a brief moment, mass casualties including his commanding officer were killed. So now with this creature’s pesence, Kirk is ont he hunt to take it down once and for all. But as the title indicates, he’s leaning towards becoming obsessed with it. We se Kirk acitng more angry and reckless than usual, especially when he continues to choose this over getting out of the space to diver some vaccines whent heya re desperately needed... yeah we’ll try to ignore how uncomfortable that is int he current times for now. The on of his former CO is also part of the Enterprise crew, and Kirk is spreading that obsession onto him, even punishing him for hesitating as he had when you’d expect him to be more sympathetic. It’s an episode that really unsettles you because Kirk isn’t acting like Kirk. Even in Consciousness of the King when dealing with the man who... you know, caused a genocide that Kirk was a victim of, he mostly held it together.

It’s these kinds of episodes that always fascinate me. What happens when we put this character into a situaitont hat completeley unnerves them? How would they react? How would it affect their usually rational actions? What would drive them to behave in such a way? How do those around them react? Kirk is very much dealing with a trauma and while eh is able to convince Spock and McCoy that e IS sound of mind and fit for duty, it doesn’t change that he’s allowing the trauma and guilt to morph into a dangeorus obsessiont hat is risking numerous lives. Not to mention afecting a young man who is in a similar position to him and also lost a loved one, yet the one that you’d expect to have Kirk’s sympahty is the one he’s treaitng harshly because of what he himself went through. Yes Kirk realizes it at the end and both corrects his mistakes and takes outt he monster, and it was good to see that he was able to pull himself back. But it was still just so interesitng to explore Kirk in this kind of position.

Spock and McCoy were also on point with both knowing that Jim isn’t acting right and ultimateley confornting him. The whole scene where McCoy gives Kirk essentially apsycological analysis, bringing Spock in once Kirk gets partiulalry heated, and them both laying down the line and holding firm until Kirk properly assures themt hat he is fit for duty was such a great scene. So was Spock actually seekign Bones as he knows that he can better understand Kirk’s emotional issues and him trying to comfort Garrovic was nice... it failed but he was stillt rying to do the right thing when Jim couldn’t. It’just one of those episodes that a character analyist like me eats up. As far as flaws go, notign comes to mind, but that might change on rewatch. I had just had others I liked better that placed it here, but it was very much an episode that got my attention.

#12. Operation: Annihilate

I still remember the suspense that this episode had me in. So we have the crew arrive at a colony that is uner attack by these parasites that are infecting thema nd leading them to painful deaths. Its already bad when Kirk finds his brother dead and his sister-in-law dies in utter agony, leaivng his young nephew’s fate uncertain. But it gets worse when Spockg ets infected and while he does his best, he’s having a difficult time managing the pain. It shows too in not only the scene where he pretty much goes balistic, but every scene after where he’s moslty under control, you can see the pain in his body lamnguage, tone, and eyes. Nimoy did an excelelnt job at keeping up that usual Spock demeanor, but converyign everything through body language alone. The team has to work to find a way to get rid of these parasites before it kills anyone else and exterminate them fromt he colony.

IMO, this was when iot felt like the writers realized what they had with the Triumvarite. At that point it was mainly abotu Kirka dn Spock and hwile Bones got it better than a few of the others, he still didn’t feel... quite there yet. I mean Kelley wans’t evne including int he opening credits until the next season. Here though we have all three with something major going on that’s important. Kirk is trying to figure out how to deal witht he situaiton which has cost him two fmaily members and may cost him his kid nephew. Spock is n pain due tot he parasite but still trying to perform his duties,e ven beaming down to get one of the parasites sicne as he’s already infected, he’s not at risk. McCoy is tryign to figure out how to get rid of the things and is the one having to keep both Spock and Peter alive. These all intersect together and the three just have this great chemistry. Their dynamic isvery mucht he thignt hat I loved most whenw atching the series, and this is when it felt like it clicked into place. The climax isalso heart-breaking. They figure out that bright lightcan kill the parasites, but McCoy is worried about what that intensity can do to Spock. He’s reluctant, but both Kirk and Spock push him to do it and while it’s successful in killing the parasite, it elaves Spock blind. Then Bones finds out that he didn’t need to turn it up that high and would have know had he just waited a few moments. While Spcok accepts it as a necessary loss, Kirk can barley hold back his fury... thoguh I DON’T like how the blame all get put on Boens when Kirk made him do it. Evenw hen Kirk tells Bones later that it wasn’t his fault, just by Bones’ face you can tell that he fully blmes himself.

That does bringmy big criticism though that lande dit at twelve. The ending is... nto good. I mean yay the succeed, but it felt like this was meant to be a two-parter, they couldn’t get the seocnd part, and had to make a hasty resolution to clear up the plot quickly. Not only is Peter’s face never mentioned or do we see Kirk’s reactionw hether good or bad, but Spock... is fine. He had a second eyelid that NEVER comes up again and he had just forgottena bout it. I now that TOS wans’t a serialized show but it not only felt like a waste of some potential story and character development for all three of our boys, but like haivng Spock blindd at all and sending McCoy down that guilt trip was utterly unecessary to begin with because it all happened int he last five minutes. I’mg lad that Spock was okay, and the end where Bones asks Kirk to not tell Spockw hat he said about him being the best First Offficer int he fleet, which Spock ehars and thanks him for half-enuinely, half-jokignly, again it feels like it was unecessary with how lat eit happened and how little impact it ultimateley had. Because of that, it landed here. But it’s still an enjoyable episode that again, felt like when the Triumvirate truly clicked into place and gave us even more good material after,

#11. The Naked Time

When I got to this episode, I had to remember how I quit as a teenager right before this and proceeded to yell ‘why didn’t you just go ONE more episode you idiot?!” to my past self. I really enjoyed this episode mainly for the concept. A virus that erases one inhibitions and self-control. Some of them are wa ky like Sulu with the fencing sword, which was also the most entertaining part of the episode. But it’s still interesting as we see these characters just give into whatever they’re desiring without any sort of thought and it erupts into chaos. It WAS a tad uncomfortable cause... you know, we’re watching a spreading virus that came about cause someone failed to follow proper safety guidelines while we’re living in a pandemic. But that’s not the episode’s fault.

It especially got interesting when Spock got it. This is the fourth episodes aired (I think it’s later in production order but I watched the order Netflix gave me) but even then we saw that Spock was a logical, very in-control character. We din’t know all the details anout him yet or that much about Vulcans, but we’d seen enough to get the general gist of the character. Then due to the cirus, those mental barriers begin to crumble rapidly. The scene where he is alone, trying to force himself to gain control of his emotions and ultimately failing as he breaks down... damn that was an excellent scene. Apparently it was thought of on the spot by Leonard Nimoy and he only had time for one take. Boy did he nail it. That was the moment I became invested in Spock as a character and in his and Kirk’s relationship as Kirk tries to snap him out of it, even risking getting infected himself because he needs Spock. I think that there are episodes that I enjoy more and the weird time travel ending made the ending really weird. Hence why this just barely missed the Top 10. But back when the show mainly gripped me for it’s science fiction concepts, this was a really good episode. It was the first one I went and watched twice before moving to the next one. I’m just so interested in the idea of losing your self-control and how you and others around you deal with it. Maybe it’s the analyst in me talking, but damn those mental concepts always get to me! A fun watch that was essentially the episode that convinced me that yes, this show is good and this time I wasn’t backing out.

#10. Mirror, Mirror

Top 10 now! Here we go! So.. mirror alternate reality. We’ve seen this a billion times in just about every media ever. IDK how common it was when Star Trek did it, but I always love this kind of concept snd seeing how a character would act if things had gone even slightly different. The Mirror Verse is admittedly a little too cartoonishly evil, but does come across as a fascist dictatorship, so I can’t really complain. Anyways, Kirk, McCoy, Scotty, and Uhura and up there and now have to figure out how to get home without anyone catching on that they’re not their counterparts. One thing I love is that it gives Scotty and Uhura some much needed focus and they are both awesome with Scotty being his usual miracle worker self and Uhura kicking ass as she gets info and outright threatens Sulu when he tries to come on to her. God I love that woman~

The Mirror Crew are essentially one-dimensional monsters with the exception or Mirror Spock. He’s still the logical being that we know him as, but much colder and ruthless as well. Yet he still is the closest to matching his usual self and has at least some level of decency compared to everyone else. It’s probably why Kirk was so convinced that he could cause a turn around at the end. He’s not good, but he’s still more good than anyone else on that ship. Yeah the guy who forcibly mind melded McCoy without consent (and how much we judge that I’ve seen varied but I consider it a horrible invasion of privacy that they shouldn’t have brushed off) is still FAR better than anyone else if that indicates how bad this universe is. Seeing his and Kirk’s interactions was super interesitng as clealry Mirror Spock caught on quickly that something was up, but chose to prolong it until near the end. It’s interesitng to observe. I also just love seeing our four heroes handling the situation. They all act effectivlynd manage to keep up the masqurade very well with only Spock and Marlena figuring it out. It’s one of the more diverse ensembles and I wish they had done more diverse dynamics than here, but it was great to see.

I think my only issues aside form McCoy’s potential trauma being glossed over (though I do love how he insisted on saving Mirror Spock and risk not making it home cause damn it, he’s a doctor no matter what) is how we don’t get to see the four’s mirror selves aside form once, where only Kirk gets a characterization as a cartoonishly violent brute. We hear a few things about them like Mirror McCoy’s sickbay essentially being a torture zone, but that’s it. I guess it was due to only having an hour, but I wish we had gotten to see how Spock’s end of things and how he interacts with them aside form Kirk, which that didn’t amount to much anyways. Ah well, fanon has covered both of these pretty extensively from what I can tell, so I shall settle on that. Still it was an enjoyable episode. I’ve seen better Evil Universe stories (nothing’s gonna beat the Justice Lords from Justice League for me tbf), but still a good one with a good ensemble, good character moments, and a unique threatening situation for our heroes to navigate through.

#9. Amok Time

AKA, the episode that more or less created the Slash Genre as we know it. But we’ll touch ont hat later. For now, one thing that I was really hoping for when I got to Season 2 was learning more about Vulcans and their culture. We knew a few things by then, like certain physiological differences between Vulcans and Humans and of course their logical philosophy. But S2 explored them and their culture more, and this was a big one. Spock is acting uncharacteristically agressive and refuses to explain why. Eventually he reveals that he is undergoign Pon Farr, aka going into heat. Unless he goes to Vulcan and does... ugh... mating and soon, he will die. IDK how they got away with this on a 60’s show, but I ain’t complaining. It does that exploration into Vulcans that I was hoping for. Hell we grt to finally see Vulcan... well a section of it but we still got to see it for the first time! It was interesitng to learn about Pon Farr and the rituals that go into it like how maitng works (weird that the logical Vulcan species has arranged marriages, but whatever) and seeing more Vulcans outside of Spock. It’s the kind of world building that does my heart good~

It had a lot of really good moments. Spock explaining everything to Kirk while trying to keep himself from killing him. Chekov being uttelry done with everything as they keephanging course to and from. Ulcan. Spock inviting not only Kirk to the ‘wedding’, but also McCoy, showing that despite their arguments he undoubtedly considers him a close friend. Hell McCoy imo is the true hero of the episode for being the one to catch that something was worng with Spock and his in-genius plan to fake Kirk’s death to keep his two idiot best friends from killing each other without pissing off any Vulcans. Seriosuly, the man needs all the appreciation in existence. And of course, we have the kal-if-fee where T’Pring (great antagonist BTW, will explore her when ai do an a tual review) forces Kirk against Spock. What ensued, while I fully believ eunintentional, forever generated a whole wave of slash and outright invented the term. While I’m not even close to as into Spirk as others, there is no denying how impactful the ship was to fandom culture and to the LGBT+ community. It is a legavy that I hold respect for since it really gave people like myself creativity and enpowerment for over 50 years, and is still generaitng works even now. That is something to respect.

As for it’s placement... the ending was a litle weird. It felt like they didn’t know how to have Spock cured without him either killing someone or doing hanky panky, so he just... gets over it agter thinking that he killed Kirk. It is a good moment, especially his reaction when he sees that Kirk is alive. That was a very justified emotional response that made me smile... and laugh when he tried to deny it haha. ButI find it hard ot buy that a biological funciton like that just... went away. But ah well. It was still an ejoyable episode with some great Vulcan content, McCoy being an underrated badass, and the moments that slash shippers will forever be grateful for. But speaking of slash...

#8. All Our Yesterdays

Sorry Amok Time, but THIS is the slashiest episode in the whole show. While I didn’t get into Spirk much, I got head over heels for Spones. IDK what it was but their dynamic has always been enjoyable and it just... really drew me in. Most of my favorite moments were between this two like the moment in Bread and Circuses and more I’ll go into later, This is essentially The Spones Episode despite what actually happens. Our heroes are to clear a planet that’s sun is about to go supernova, only to find it already gone. Kirk ends up going through a portal when he hears cries for help and when Spock and McCoy go agter him, they end up in an arctic-like area. They were all sent to different points of th eplanet’s past, Kirk in some old timey point and Spock and McCoy even earlier. Now they have to figure out how to get back and survive their situaitons. Kirk’s plot has nothing special tbh and with a few adjustments could have been written out entirely, hence why this is at 8. But Spock and McCoy? Ho boy, their scenes MAKE this episode.

Spock and McCoy try to survive the harsh conditions, the latter almost dying of severe frostbite. He outright tells Spock to abandon him with Spock being VERY adament that that’s not happening. They’re rescued by a woman named Zarabeth and Spock proceeds to spend most of the episode interacting with her while tending to McCoy. Which he gets VERY touchy feely with the latter. Like... a lot more than normal, which tvh the whole seaosm felt that way between those two if what I said about The World is Hollow... counts for anything. Now he DOES end up ‘falling’ for Zarabeth, but there’s a reason for that. Spock is regressing to how his ancestors acted at the time, which was like ‘barbarians’. When amcCoy starts to realize that something’s wrong, it leads to two very intense but really well done scenes with McCoy using logic against Spock to make him realize that he’s lost himself. And while Spock pretty much gave up greitng home due to all of this, McCoy refuses with or without him, even outright going back into the storm to find the portal because damn it, he wants his life back. Then when we find out that Spock and McCoy HAVE to go back together or not at all, it doesn’t take Spock even a second to decide to leave Zarabeth behind. It’s sad because Zarabeth will die a cold, lonely death and she cdoesn’t deserve that at all, so it’s bittersweet. But man next to the katra thing int he films, IDT it gets more symbolic than that.

Like I said, Kirk’s scenes in the past are the only real issue I have since aside form explaining a few things about he situation, feel like they’re just there so that Kirk can still be in the episode prominently. I had some problems with Spock’s OOC behavior, but that got an explanation and has some credibility with how Vulcans are psychically linked. Would explain why McCoy and Zarabeth never seemed to regress. But it was still a good episode with great Spock and McCoy scenes, we FINALLY git a snow environment after forever (and a time travel plot to boot), and a bittersweet but nice ending. Seriously when Spock and McCoy make it back safely and Kirk just touches them on their shoulders in relief is such a nice moment. God I love those three~! Season Three wasn’t a strong season but it still had it’s standouts, and this was very much one of them for me. But I AM biased cause Spones, so take that for what it’s worth!

I honestly would love to see Black Cat and MJ just hang out more. Because of the love triangle I’ve always heard about how much they ‘must’ hate each other, but honestly I could picture Pete waking up one day, finding MJ and Felicia in the living room having coffee and asking what she’s doing here and MJ just says, “Dude we meet up like twice a week to hang. We’re going bowling tonight.” or something.

They’re relationship is actually more complicated than simply being catty rivals or some such.

The harsh truth is, for better or worse, writers pitted the pair against one another lightly in the 1980s, famously the first instance of this was in the iconic ASM #258, the issue both immediately after MJ reveals she knows who Peter is and where Peter learns the truth about the black costume.

Initially the animosity was more on Felicia’s end than MJ’s, whether she meant it or not, she briefly felt Peter was better suited to Black Cat.

MJ became Peter’s confidant not too long before he and Felicia broke up and when she was later reintroduced into the titles MJ became more clearly down on her. This is epitomized in Spec #119 (a great Felicia story).

That issue also ends though with MJ admitting she has complicated conflicting feelings towards Felicia, the complications of which are wrapped up in her complicated feelings for Peter. In the story Felicia single handily takes down Sabertooth.* In a sense she defended civilians and Peter in doing so and thus MJ is caught between admiration and jealousy.

Their romantic rivalry becomes more out and out mean in Spec #123 and ASM #288 which follows up on that subplot. In the issues MJ resolves to set her and Peter’s ‘will they won’t they’ thing straight only find Felicia in Peter’s apartment (he saved her earlier that day and she needed somewhere to regroup). At the end of that adventure though Felicia basically forcibly stayed in Peter’s apartment so MJ was none too pleased to find her there when she showed up to make Peter breakfast in bed.**

The pair remained in disdain of one another after this but also didn’t interact face to face again until after Pete and MJ got married and more specifically after Peter lost his cosmic powers defeating Tri-Sentinel. Felicia had learned Peter had gotten married and as revenge began dating Flash with the intention of breaking his heart to hurt Peter by proxy. She also delighted in makig him and MJ uncomfortable though.

When MJ and Felicia interacted one-on-one Felicia was shockingly straight up assaulting MJ!

At this point MJ obviously didn’t like Felicia but she was not giving as good as she got. Things began to shift not too long after in a storyline that saw Peter give up his powers and Felicia begin to develop genuine feelings for Flash. During this storyline Felicia stepped up and began acting as the muscle for the powerless Peter. MJ still didn’t like Peter was starting to reluctantly recognize her as more of an ally than an enemy. In particular the story ended with Felicia powerless and deciding to temporarily retire and date Flash sincerely.

Whilst they weren’t exactly friends it did get to a point where MJ was okay with going on double dates with Flash and Felicia, considering the latter was no longer out to get her/hurt Flash/steal Peter away.

However a significant turning point occurred in Web of Spider-Man #80. The story short is that Peter/Spidey is missing after he and Mj got attacked. MJ turns to Felicia for help, citing the fact she still cares for Peter and that’s common ground for them to work with for the moment. She gives her a tracking device Peter made to zero in on him. She even admits she’s out of her league on this front and it’s up to Felicia. Felicia of course helps save Spidey and whilst initially claims her locating him was due to their ‘connection’ (meaning their romantic history) she admits MJhelped witht he tracking device. The issue ends though with Felicia admitting that MJ’s device actually didn’t work, meaning Felicia simply let the Parker couple think it did out of kindness to MJ. This didn’t turn the pair into friends, but it showed they were clearly mellowing towards one another.

This didn’t make them chummy as catty remarks still occurred during later interactions (noticably from MJ). I’m skipping over stuff to get to some highlights, the next of which is a big one.

In Felicia’s first ever solo mini-seires MJ not only appears int he first issue but they are actually hanging out...together...as friends!

Or at least as frenemies. It’s clear there is still some underlying jealousy or jousting to be had, but they’re very open about it and Felicia is actively confiding in MJ, even talking about how she feels regarding Peter. And not just Peter in general, his then current state of being. This was back when Peter was unravelling due to the aftermath of the Robot Parents crap and becoming more anti-social and obsessive about his Spider-Man life, spending less time out of the costume. It got Felicia and MJ concerned. A very significant line of dialogue in this scene is MJ saying she’ll call Felicia later. It implies that they have hung out together before or are at least okay with doing do again in the near future.

Also this was at Felicia’s home, so for MJ to have voluntarily gone to the home of the woman who once assaulted her says a lot about how things have changed.

Again skipping over some stuff but the next big moment for MJ and Felicia came in Web of Spider-Man #125 where MJ once again calls upon Felicia’s aid to find Peter (though he’s not in trouble, she just needs him present). The circumstances are decidedly different from Web #80. There is no jousting going on. Partially this is due to their relationship having grown deeper but it’s also due to MJ being pregnant and amidst the chaos of the time (Peter was on trial for murder, Aunt May had just died and MJ had been recently abducted by Kaine) she was clearly feeling very vulnerable.

Vulnerable enough in fact that Felicia can clearly tell MJ is upset and outright hugs her, offering some support and comfort.

This time Felicia isn’t seeking out Peter less because she cares for him and more because she wants to help MJ and the baby. If ever there was a moment clearly demarking the pair had fully transitioned into real friendship, this was it.

Whilst MJ and Felicia don’t directly interact in Web #128 Peter makes a reference to MJ and Felicia talking on the phone for hours.

Skipping waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay ahead now. The tl:dr is that Felicia clearly began to develop some feelings for Peter again during Howard Mackie’s run. This became more significantly a factor in the Evil that Men Do Limited Series where Felicia is putting the movies on Peter and also refers to MJ derogatorily.

Something to note about Evil that Men do is that it gets a lot of details wrong and it’s continuity is wonky. the first half came out when Peter and MJ were seperated, but the second half came out years later and used then contemporary continuity from when Peter and MJ would’ve been back together. The important thing to note is Felicia went back to having the hots for Spider-Man and also being down on MJ

To my recollection the next time I recall MJ and Felicia having a significant interaction was in Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #5. In the issue Felicia has rescued Peter from the Vulture and is helping him investigate Aunt may’s recent kidnapping. Peter was badly beat up so Felicia and Mj were nursing him back to health. The scene where Peter wakes up clearly conveys that there is some tension and competitivness going on between MJ and Felicia even though they are talking in a friendly manner to one another. When Felicia leaves MJ looked really bummed out, which might’e been due to some insecurities regarding Felicia or because of their financial troubles at the time (she was keeping them from Peter).

Later on in Marvel Knights #10, when Peter has resolved to break Norman Osborn out of jail in order to save Aunt May, Felicia going along with him for this, MJ blows up at Felicia and basically tells her to back off from Peter.

In defence of MJ here, Norman Osborn has pushed them to the edge big time so I think she’s having a major wobble regarding Black Cat.

Anyway, she’s not wrong about Felicia as the remaining issues of the arc make it clear that Felicia is absolutely in love with Peter again if Evil that Men Do didn’t make that clear enough.

Next up in Spider-Man: Breakout #2, MJ is similarly pissed off about Peter contacting Felicia for help tracking down the U-Foes.

Frankly...I find this instance rather out of character but I thought I might as well mention it.

Then we have Spider-Man Unlimited volume 3 #14. In this issue, as payback for helping him bust out Norman Osborn, Felicia demands Spider-Man help her steal something from Doctor Doom. Peter isn’t happy about this until it turns out that the item in question was a spider tracer with his finger prints on it, meaning Felicia was trying to once again protect Peter. MJ wasn’t happy to find out Peter was hanging out with Felicia but acknwoeldged she helped protect them.

The next notable interaction was during Civil War when Peter was unmasked, the Parkers were fugitives and Peter was half dead from a beating via the Rhino. Felicia upon learning of this sought out the Parkers and volunteered to even the score with Rhino. When all is said and done, MJ asks Felicia if she wants to give Peter a message from her.

We then transition into shitty post-OMD continuity and frankly I’m not touching 90% of that sans one notable story (Web of Spider-Man volume 2 #11-12) in which Felicia, who has totally forgotten who MJ and Peter Parker are, nevertheless befriends MJ after an adventure to save Peter.

I bring up this story simply because your original question was regarding MJ and Felicia friendship.

This story’s canonicity can be debated for a few reasons, it doesn’t make sense in general because the mindwipe was asinine shit and it has 0 follow up. In fact it doesn’t even really jive with later appearances of MJ or Felicia. It is amusing though that it completes a sort of trilogy wherein MJ and Felicia become more friendly in Web of Spider-Man.

Anyway, that brings you pretty much up to date.

Essentially there are two distinct eras for MJ and Felicia’s relationship. The 1980s-1990s where they have a clear arc transitioning from acquaintances who’re not that fond of one another to rivals to frenemies to outright friends.

Then you have the 2000s and beyond which pits the two against one another again but in a very different dynamic to before as MJ is Peter’s wife and recognizes Felicia’s as an ally.

It’s not impossible to reconcile the two narratively but I’m not going to do that here.

I think the second era might’ve been done in order to inject more tension into the Spider Marriage and in fairness, it did work. It was dramatic.

But I personally prefer the second era much more as it portrays a clear character arc. As a bonus I should mention that, since it diverged from Spider-Man continuity in the late 1990s, in Spider-Girl MJ and Felicia’s relationship continued to develop in a friendly manner to the point where Felicia would pay Mj a visit in her office and the pair would chat about their daughters and their mutual problems. In MJ’s case a difficult pregnancy and in Felicia’s her rebellious daughter who wasn’t fond of her same sex partner.

To bring this right around to your OP, the scenes of friendship have more or less happened in canon and in stories that are pseudo canon.

*Bear in mind this was the same decade where Sabertooth participated in the infamous Mutant Massacre storyline where he and his peers mass slaughtered a bunch of defenceless mutants. Readers knew he was no pushover.

**Because you see according to Joe Quesada, Steve Wacker, Dan Slott et al Mary Jane was clearly not dating Peter at this time and I think we’ve all brought groceries to our ex’s apartment (that we own a key to) in order to make them breakfast in bed. It’s the single most platonic gesture possible.

Thanks, I was actually reading those posts and thinking those bad boys (Gendrya fics) need some revisions and that my newer (unpublihsed) stuff featuring Arya needs some edits because the show Arya vs the book Arya are vastly different people, and I confess that while I adore Maisie to death (seriously, even her name is freakin adorable) the extroverted, bubbly, friendly, blurt-out-everything-that-pops-into-her-head, half a boy/half a wolf cub version of the girl is the one I fell for.

I’ma do me a re-read of the novels (maybe just her parts and those of Ned, the Hound, Sansa, and the others I like alot, and revise my way of writing her a little. I want that girl back, even if the badass assassin is fun.

Like, imagine this stone cold assassin, but who’s super bubbly and will just walk up to anyone and ask them uuncomfortable questions or offer to be their friend, but like, she can kill you with her eyes closed and she won’t even flinch. Like, this is a girl you want as your friend. She’s totes a Hufflepuff, if you ask me. Loyal. Just. Hard working. Willing to fight to the death for those she loves.

All that said, the point of the List thorughout the series is supposed to be the list of people Arya plans to kill, but you think about it, everyone is on it because they were a dick, right? Like Joff’s a twat, lies, get Lady and Micah killed, and then call for Ned’s head instead of granting mercy, and so he goes on the list. Cersei has Ned arrested, Sansa imprisoned, and Arya hunted, along witht Roberts bastards being hunted, so on the list she goes. The Hound goes on the list for killing Micah and blindly obeying the crown when he has the skills and power to stand up for what’s right, but doesn’t. Meryn Trant for killing Syrio. Polliver and the Mountain for torturing peopel at Harrenhal. Melisandre, Thoros, and Beric Dondarrion for trading Gendry for gold. Walder Frey for the Red Wedding, etc.

Like, this tiny child is foisted into a lifetime of fear and death and murder all because people were dicks to the ones she cares about and she festers this hatred for them, but she’s still a good person, at her core. Like, she only wants to hurt the ones who hurt her, or who hurt her family. She doesn’t enjoy killing for the sake of killing and she doesn’t like causing pain. She yells at the Hound for stealing, and for abusing people, and generally is always on the lookout to add people to her “pack” even if they’re not her blood.

And I’m getting off track and waxing poetic about Arya Stark, but goddamn it, she’s one of the most complex female characters I’ve run across in a long time and D&D did her a disservice by turning her into some automonton ice-killer with no feelings.Sansa has her moments, and Dany’s got her own complexities that boggle the mind and all three of them got screwed over by D&D, but Arya was supposed to be more that what they made her, and yeah, okay, in the novels she’s still in Braavos training to be Facelss because George is actually the slowest writer on the planet and gets way too off topic (and I say this as... you know... me. Look at me go, lobbing boulders from this glass house of mine), but I do think that the whole point of the list, and the revisiting of the “pack survives” train of thought and Arya’s continued bubbliness in the books despite everything is a way better portrayal of her and I’m really looking forward to seeing where he takes it, so the man better not die before we get our end, or goddamn it, I will dedicate my life to fanfic that gives her a damn ending that makes me happy (who am I kidding, I’m gonna do that anyway), but the point is I love her and she’s my favourite, and... and...

I just have a lot of feelings about this, okay.

Guess who got a big chunk of writing done for the first time in months? This gal!

Okay, so here is a rough first chapter of a Metalocalypse fanfic, Dethcomics:

"Gentleman… It seems Dethklok is looking into joining the world of comic books. A call has gone out seeking artists and writers to create a Dethklok graphic novel."

"This could be catastrophic! Every new Dethklok industry venture manages to upset the balance of trade, but a band-sponsored book spreading their messages further?!"

"At least with their music no one can tell what Nathan Explosion is saying. But written in black and white?!"

"Exactly. To elaborate, I have called in expert in comics, Professor Varveil Molfirbygai."

The Professor, skinny and acne-ridden, comes forward, pushing his square-framed glasses up the bridge of his nose. "Gentlemen, Dethklok have already rejected the proposals by Brian Posehn, Brian Piludo, and Grant Morrison for their books and are tearing through artists one at a time. At this rate, no one in the industry will be left but Rob Liefeld and Devin Grayson. Apparently their contradictory demands and unrealistic expectations have even been characterized by Alan Moore as 'too far out'. Marvel, DC, Image, and Dark Horse have all blacklisted them, leading to the band to launch their own independent publishing house. This could potentially upset the delicate balance of power within the industry. And God help us if the title is snatched up for screen adaptation by Sony or - ugh - Hulu."

"What can we do to nip this in the bud?"

"It seems that Nathan Explosion's new wife, Abigail Remeltindtdrinc and Charles Offdensen have taken a more direct role in monitoring the project. They may prove a stabilizing influence…"

"Ugh, Dildos!" William Murderface hurls his whiskey bottle to the corner of the game room. "These artsy-fartsy types are a bunch of egotistical, emotional dildos!"

"Ja, likes how obsessives and arrogants can yous gets?" Skwissgaar adds, shredding silently on his Gibson. "And sos delicate!"

Toki, leaning back from the Mortal Kombat machine, sniffs. "I's kinds of liked that Yoorerd Way fellows…"

"HE DIDN'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT ROCK!" Nathan roars from the foosball table, engaging in a fierce battle with Pickles.

"Maybe we should just write it ourselves, y'know." Pickles suggests, "And get, I don't know… Toki, you draw things, right?"

Toki brightens. "I'S DO!"

Skisgaar scoffs, "All's he's draws is girly, fluffy tings like happy bunnies and womens withts de tits covered."

"Toki is even less metal than that Brenden Smalls douchebag! Heh, Brenden Smalls, what did he ever create for anyone?" Murderface adds.

"I cans draw brutal!"

"I'm sure you can, Toki, but I'm afraid that still isn't happening," a firm, female voice calls out.

The room falls silent as Charles and Abigail enter the room.

"Guys, Abigail may have found someone to write and draw the book," Charles announces.

Abigail blanches slightly, somewhat uncomfortable. "Maybe, if I can convince her."

"Her?" Murderface asks, somehow sounding simultaneously dismissive and aroused. "We can't let ladies make stuff for us!"

Abigail cradles her temple. "See?" She says to Offdensen, "I told you!"

"Why would we wants chicks arounds us?" Skwisgaar asks.

"Guys, we already put out the announcement. You've blown through nearly every acclaimed graphic novel creator in the business. Fans are getting impatient. So if we can get Abigail's friend to do this for us, you will be on your best behavior!"

"Maybe we should give this chick a chance, you know?" Nathan offers, offering his wife a sympathetic look.

"Oh, you're only saying that because your lady suggested it!" Murderface howls, taking a new bottle of alcohol from a Klokateer with a tray. "You're totally whipped, Man!"

Abigail's eyes burn. She smarches over to the couch and yanks the bassist by the ear. He cries out.

"Listen, you talentless sack of piss, this whole project has been taking time away from recording. And you know how I feel about that. You're going to be a good little boy and do as I say, understand?!"

"YES, MA'AM!"

Abigail releases him, leans back, clears her throat, and smooths her blazer. "I apologize for that. I am… not feeling like myself lately. Like I said, I haven't even convinced my friend to do this, I am not even sure I can. But you can all be sure of her qualifications. Her name is Sofia Maldonado, she's been creating comics since she was fifteen. She has worked on titles like The Boys, Swamp Thing, Ms. Marvel, Deadpool, Nightwing, and Batman. She has her own book, The Emerald Pixie, that has been a hit with both critics and readers and has been nominated for four Eisner Awards, winning two."

The band looks at her as if she is speaking Chinese. She sighs.

" Uh, 'Emerald Pixie'?" Nathan inquires, "No offense, Honey, but that doesn't sound very metal."

"The Pixie has retractable ten inch fangs."

"Oh, uh, that's cool, I guess."

"I mean, it can't hurt, I guess." Pickles adds.

"Is she hot?" Murderface asks.

"Yeahs, is she hot?" Skwisgaar asks.

Abigail turns to Charles. "Why am I doing this again?"

Offdensen pats the producer on the arm. "Guys, please, that is irrelevant. And you will keep things professional, or I am cancelling your vacation to Pornfest this year, understand?"

"What?! Can you even do that?!" Pickles cries out.

"As per my new contract with the five of you, I most certainly can."

The band all grumbles, except for Toki.

"Cans I's shows her my drawings?"

"I'm sure that will be fine."

Abigail sighs. "Look, guys, this woman is a friend of mine, she is good at what she does, and she does not put up with crap. I am going out on a limb for you with this. One wrong move and she bolts. Understand?"

They all grumble again, but answer in the affirmative.

"Excellent." Charles straightens his tie and clears his throat. "Abigail will call up Ms. Maldonado and see if she is willing."

"No."

"Just lis-"

"No, Abby, and also: No. Nope. Negative. Nuh-uh. Nein. Not happening. They've run through almost everyone. Do you know how fucked up you have to be to weird out Alan Moore?! The man worships a Roman Snake God, for fucks sake. I am not descending into that pit of testosterone and excess."

"I will keep them in line, I promise. I managed to get them through six albums in as many years. Now that I'm involved, it will be different, I promise."

"Didn't William Murderface once refer to women as 'Serpents with tits'? Abby, I have reached a point in my career where I am through putting up with shit like this. I have had to collaborate with Garth Ennis and Frank Miller. I even spent an entire hour of my life in the presence of Dave Sims. I have done my time."

Abigail groans. "Sof, Charles Offdensen is offering enough for you to put Eddie through preschool, K-12 private, college and grad school someday."

"Emerald Pixie is selling like crazy and Paramount and Universal have approached me for the rights."

"I'll get you an interview for Collegiate."

There's a long pause.

"...Really? How?"

"I'm an alum, remember? And the Headmistress owes me, like, seven favors. Your son will be playing in the sandbox with the children of Governors and hedge fund owners.”

There’s another pause. Abigail smiles. For all that Sofia has gone on about hating capitalism and her passion for Leftist politics, since her son was born she’d grown a little hypocritical on that front. Not that Abby could blame her. Sofia didn’t have a lot of support, being a single mom.

“Maybe I’ll consider a meaning.”

Abigail tries a different tactic. “Please do. To be honest, I could really use a friend around here at the moment.”

It’s not something she’d normally say, as independent as she is. But as she makes the statement, she realizes that it’s true.

Sofia’s voice becomes gentler. “What’s up?”

Abigail tells her.

Her friend takes a deep breath. “Okay, then. I’ll take the meeting. But I mean it, Abby, one shitty comment---”

“---I know. But hey, look, you’ve met Nathan, and he’s not so bad, right?”

Technically, Sofia had encountered the entire band to varying extents at the wedding. She’d really only spoken to Nathan, and stared, mouth agape, at Pickles’s bender and slurred Best Man’s toast.

“He’s not too bad, I guess. But the rest? Bunch of crazy gringos.”

“Toki is sweet. Pickles actually isn’t bad when he’s not blackout drunk. Skwisgaar can be decent, aside from the arrogance. And Murderface… Don’t worry, I’ll keep my boot to his neck. I’ll keep my boots to all of their necks. I swear. Please, Sof, do this for me.”

Sofia takes yet another deep breath. “Alright. I’ll be available in a couple of weeks. Book me a flight. And I want my Collegiate interview before then.”

“Done. Thank you so much.”

They say their good-byes. Abigail hangs up and leans back against the pillows of her bed, rubbing her temple. Nathan enters the bedroom, looking a little sheepish.

“Look, uh, I had another talk with the guys. Murderface is in debt again, so I offered to pay it off, if you don’t, uh, mind. That should help keep him… you know… less Murderface.” He sits down on the edge of the bed and takes her hand. “Did she say yes?”

“We have a single meeting in two weeks. I’m pretty sure I’m going to draw up a list with Charles about things they are not allowed to bring up.”

“You’re sure this is a good idea, right?”

Abigail smiles ruefully. “No, not at all. But it’s the only idea I have.”

“I hope the guys don’t, well, uh, you know…”

“Sofia talks a big game, but she’s tough and willing to put up with more than she lets on. She wouldn’t be where she is if it were otherwise. If we keep them reined in enough, I think we might make this work.”

“Hey, I’s remembers her!”

“Shut up, Toki! Don’t be weird!” Pickles snaps as they watch their prospective new artist drop her bags in the middle of the Mordhouse entry hall and look up at the gargantuan ceiling.

She is tall and athletic, with bronzed skin, blue eyes, and dark brown hair. She wears boot-cut black pants, a red graphic tee, and a black jacket with pins on the lapel. The band all peers at her curiously as Abigail rushes forward to greet her, ask after her son, and re-introduce Charles.

Handshakes are exchanged, and Abigail ushers the band over.

“Sofia, you of course remember my husband Nathan. This is Pickles, the drummer. Skwisgaar Skwigelf, lead guitar.”

“Hi’s.” Skwisgaar offers, obviously trying not to stare at her tits.

“Toki Wartooth, rhythm guitar.”

“Hello’s artist-lady!” Toki bounces on his heels, clutching sheets of paper. “I’s have some drawings, I hopes you like them!” He thrusts them towards her.

The artist smiles kindly and takes them. “I’ll give them a look. Thank you, Mr. Wartooth.”

“Calls me Toki!”

“Thank you, Toki.”

“And finally, William Murderface, bass.”

“Greetings and salutations, Senoriiiiiita!” Murderface grabs the woman’s hand and presses a wet kiss to it before smirking up at her. “Ole.”

Sofia snatches her hand back and glances at Abigail, who glowers at the bassist. “Knock it off, Murderface, or I’ll have you neutered.”

He squeals and jumps back. “S-Sorry.”

"So's, tells me, comics-lady. Cans we's makes dis comic book a pops-ups book and can we's makes the pop-up dragons breathes fire?"

Sofia takes one look at Toki, then another at Abigail. "I'm so glad to be here!"

jason todd is the second robin. he’s a nerd and loves school and reading. he was a good robin dont listen to the ppl that say otherwise. he died at the hands of the joker. fuck the joker. barbara and jason need to team up and beat the shit out of the joker and preferably kill him. there’s an au (arkham knight) where jason lives and was kept by the joker and tortured by him for a year (i think, it’s been awhile since i read those comics). but anywhom,,.. jason todd becomes the red hood and teams up with arsenal and starfire,,.. (the new 52 run of rhato was not,,,. good, rebirth is better) in rebirth he teams up with artemis and bizzaro,,.. died but got better

tim drake the third robin. smart as hell but hates school. he found out that bruce wayne was batman and basically blackmailed him lmao. he became red robin and joined the teen titans. he’s in love with kon-el. hes dead but not dead dead. part of batman incorporated currently

stephanie brown was a robin in some runs but is more known as batgirl. i dont actually know a lot about her but she gives me lesbian vibes. in batman incorporated

cassandra cain is the third batgirl and i would fucking die for her. she doesnt talk much but she loves bruce, barbara and stephanie. she was adopted by bruce wayne and is a killing machine and probably one of the best fighters in the batfam. like. top five. top three. part of batman incorporated

damian wayne is the son of bruce wayne and talia al ghul. he was trained to take over the league of assassins. struggles with killing and following bruces code of not killing. he crushes a bat and a firefly whoops, but then a bird lands in his hand and he watches it fly off. is a vegetarian- or a vegan i cant remember which one- and adopts animals. has a giant dragon demon thing called goliath and loves him a lot. dick grayson is his favorite sibling. will kick anyones ass. works witht he teen titans in rebirth and with supermans son, jon kent who is superboy (let jon have his older brother kon u fuckign cowards)

helena bertinelli is huntress. idk a lot abt her but i know she’s probably gay. she kicks ass and has a crossbow. like the color purple maybe?

tldr; the batfam is a bunch of crime fighting assholes that love each other (most of them anyway) and a lot of them have “died”

Colorism & How whiteness as beauty contributes in The Bluest Eye

@kimreesesdaughter when I was a teacher for like 10 minutes (Can anyone know the definition of colorism?) (Does anyone have an idea of the function the white baby dolls played in the book?) One way that the author displays the breeding ground of colorism, the belief that light skin is superior over darker skin, is through the way the world and adult women in the book treat the white baby dolls that were given as gifts to their black daughters. On page 21 Claudia described that the world pushed these dolls on every girl so much that it was agreed these dolls were what every girl should treasure. To her they said, “Here...this is beautiful, and if you are on this day ‘worthy’ you may have it.” This type of obsession sends a message to little Black girls darker than a paper bag that since this doll is white and considered beautiful, then the lighter you are the more beautiful you are over everyone else. What are some examples of colorism that you recognize in the book? Colorism is highly prevalent in Pecola’s story, which Morrison notably showcases in Pecola, Claudia, and Frieda’s encounter with Maureen Peel. In this encounter it seems like Morrison goes back in the past of all our lives to those fateful days in grade school when the Maureen’s in our lives were introduced, and depending on where you were on the color scale you either hated her for the special treatment she got, or saw her on your level and befriended her. Maybe you even swooned over her while simultaneously hating your own color and had to deal with that constant confusion for years, or maybe you were Maureen and still think you’re superior to this day. (witht that being said What is Maureen’s function in the book? Like what is Morrison’s purpose for putting her in the book?) (Ask someone to read) Page 62 -“She enchanted the entire school. When teachers called on her, they smiled encouragingly. Black boys didn’t trip her in the halls, white boys didn’t stone her, white girls didn’t suck their teeth when she was assigned to be their work partners; Black girls stepped aside when she wanted to use the sink in the girls toilet, and their eyes genuflected under sliding lids. She never had to search for anybody to eat with in the cafeteria-they flocked to the table of her choice, where she opened fastidious lunches, shaming our jelly stained bread with egg salad sandwiches cut into four dainty squares, pink frosted cupcakes, stocks of celery and carrots, proud, dark apples. She even bought and liked white milk” Given the way Morrison describes everyone treats her, like how she says the white kids accepted her more than the ‘regular’ Black girls, doesn’t it seem like they kind of treat her that way because she’s one of them? Or atleast close to being so? It kind of seems like the behavior toward her represents a lot of people’s belief that you’re automatically mixed with white, or mixed with something if you’re light skinned. Which tells you a lot when you think about how light skin is seen as beautiful. This is how white beauty standards breed colorism, because many people feel like Black is only beautiful when the skin is light and since black and white are perceived to be the only combo that makes light skin, it isn’t the Black aspect that is beautiful, it’s the white side. This is also one of the ways that Morrison points out how Black girls specifically have to be light and mixed with white to be considered beautiful and worthy, or at least mixed with something to cancel out some of the Blackness with the use of Maureen to represent. This is revealed through the quote mentioned before on page 62 when Claudia describes Maureen’s privileged treatment by the teachers and their Black and white classmates on page. Though some classism is prevalent in the way people treat Maureen like her patent leather shoes, her brown velvet coat that even I kinda wish I had when I was younger, and even her lunches, colorism is a big factor as well. Her color gives an understanding as to why she is so rich as the white kids, and paired with money they are just two powers and privileges she has over the Black kids and are just enough to make her acceptable and worthy to the white kids. To put it simply, Morrison has made Maureen the complete opposite of Pecola who is described as poor, Black, and ugly and is treated totally opposite as well. People did not adore her like they did Maureen, since she’s regular Black I’m assuming the white boys stoned her probably more harshly bc she’s darker, white girls sucked their teeth when they had to work together, and in this next scene it’s pretty apparent how the Black boys treated her as they made fun of her skin by calling her a black emo, though they were the same color as her themselves. Now this whole situation showcases the difference in treatment that light skinned Maureen receives opposed to the other Black girls, especially dark skinned Black girls. Claudia and Frieda’s contempt for Maureen due to the way people treated her simply for being light displays the reason many people think colorism ‘goes both ways’ and is just a light vs. dark issue. Their jealousy stemmed not from inherent hate for Maureen for being light, but because people treated her better than them for being light, they hated how Maureen was singled out and placed on a pedestal, which is pretty understandable. It was also colorism and internal self-hatred that made the Black boys harass Pecola for being the same as all of their skin colors, dark. Can anyone weigh in on any other reasons they thing why Morrison placed this scene in the book? It was to give an insight to the treatment of darker skinned Black girls in comparison to lighter girls, and introduce the actual definition of colorism. Now, doing this assignment reminded me of how throughout history, though people have denied the existence of colorism along with the privileges light skinned people have over darker skinned people, there was actually an elite group in the early 1900’s among many U.S. cities that prided themselves on being light skinned called the Blue Vein Society. Light skinned people whose skin was so light that you could see the veins under their skin separated themselves from darker skinned Black people in America over the colorist belief that they were better because of their skin. The term ‘Blue Vein’ stems from the traditional term ‘Blue Blood’ which represented wealth as well as privilege. Long story short it was believed in medieval Europe that the nobility and royalty had blue blood because they had enough power and money to stay inside while their servants did the field work outside. Their skin was so pale because of this which made their veins visible, which led people to believe that their blood was essentially blue. Given the origin of the name, the Blue Vein society believed, being middle and upper middle class Black people, that their riches were made possible by their light skin, just like Morrison proved when in Maureen’s character and the way she was treated opposed to Pecola.

1, Who is the early bird/Who is the night owl?

Josie is definitely the early bird. When she wakse up Vel usually wakes up with her and the goes back to sleep straight away. Vel isn’t really a night owl but she usually goes to bed later than Josie, but thats because shes used to getting as much out of the day as she possibly can

3, who hogs the cover/Who loves to cuddle?

Vel hogs the covers but unintentionally because oh her size. She needs way more covers than Josephine and if she rolls she pulls the whole duvet with her. And as for cuddling they both love it so much. They fit together really well and they love being close enough to cuddle

8, Who sleeps in their underwear(or naked)/Who sleeps in their pajamas?

Vel is underwear and naked. Its a sort of half and half on which she wears to bed, but in antiva she sleeps naked a lot more because of the heat. Josie is the underwear, but occasionally she’ll sleep nude with Vel.

19, who loves to call the other cute names?

While Josephine has her pet names for Vel, Vel has qunlat, Elven and common tongue, all three of which she speaks on a daily basis, so she uses cute names for Joesphine a lot more

21, Who has an obsession(over anything)?

Vel has an obsession with little cakes. She would kill if anyone stole one of her favourite frilly little orleasian lemon cakes.

25, Who wears the other ones clothes?

It’s physically impossible for Vel to wear 90% of Josephine’s wardrobe, and what little she can wera barely fits her or ends up ripping because of the stress of trying to cover the mountain of gay that is Vel, but Josephine is on the lucky end of the spectrum where all of Vel’s clothes will fit if they’re wrapped or tied up the right way. Her favourites are her huge blanket-like sweaters, her qunari-wrap-things(I have no clue what they’re called) and her shirts which are almost like night shirts and are nice and breezy so she can wear them around in the morning

38, Who likes to stargaze?

Josephine is the stargazer. Vel was never much interestsed in the constellations, but Josephine adores them. She also learned how to navigate witht he stars because she always hoped one day the Montilyets would have their fleets back and that she could be aboard the first of the ships

Cadeel and Leliana

4, who wakes the other one up with kisses?

Leliana is usually the culprit, but Cadeel sometimes wakes her up with kisses in places that should only be kissed while in private

11, Who likes horror movies/Who likes romance movies?

They love both equally, but thats because when they watch horror movies they either get to watch really cheesy scares and laugh or they get to be scared shitless together, and romance movies they usually watch the laughably bad and cheesy ones as well, but once in a blue moon they find a nice one and gwt to relax and actually enjoy it

20, who is dominant/submissive?

Cadeel starts off as the dominant of the two but is quickly switched to the submissive because Lelaian is stronger than her. Though they do switch it up depending on their moods

27, Who takes a log shower/Who sings in the shower?

Leliana takes showers that are three or four times longer than Cadeel’s, so she usuallly gets fed up with waiting and hops in with her, cleans herself and then hops out and Leliana is still going away at washing herself. But they both sing in the shower. Cadeel sings one song ususally so shes there for maybe a three minute shower? But Leliana sings a whole album. And sometimes when Cadeel gets in they sing together, but after Leliana slipped and sprained her wrist and her foot they had a “No dancing in the shower” rule

34, Who would wear “if lost return to…” t-shirt/Who would wear “I am..’ t-shirt?

Cadeel wears her “If lost return to Leliana” t-shirt with pride, and Leliana wears her “I am Leliana” t-shirt with a little bit less pride because she has actually been returned to her. Isabela(who I hc as being 6′1) has a “how did you lose me?” shirt to match her wives

46, Who has the longer food order?

Cadel has a waaaay longer food order. Not only has she got the warden appetite but she can really put it away and she can go ages without eating but when she finally does stop for food she becomes a near bottomless pit

2, Who is the big spoon/Who is the little spoon?

Ciara is usually the little spoon. She much prefers have Liara around her so she has something to hold on to and she feels genuinely safer if she can feel her breathing behind or beside her

10, Who like sweet/Who likes sour?

Neither like sour, bu they do like bitter, which is usually in the form of the nerve damagingly strong coffee Ciara makes in the mornings, and they both love sweet things, which is the tea Ciara makes with three or four spoons of sugar or their mutual love of ice cream and chocolate

16, Who is scared of thunderstorms?

Ciara isnt scared but after ME3 she’s affected by loud sudden noises very differently. She jumps more but its reflex rather than fear, but she still stays up to watch the lighting. Before the end of ME3 however she would be completly unaffected ny thunder

18, Who is a cat person/Who is a dog person?

I always imagined Liara would be a bit of both, but Ciara is primarily a dog person. She’s got nothing against cats, its just that she hasnt had much experience with them and she had a border collie when she was a kid so she grew up around a dog

21, Who has an obsession (over anything)?

Ciara has an obsession with Ghostbusters. They’re her all time favourite movies, she constantly wears a ghostbusters tee and she watches both of the movies a least twice year. Liara doesn’t particularly love them but she has no problem sitting and watching them with Ciara because she loves seeing how happy they make her and seeing her mouth out the lines to her favourite scenes. And wen she was a kid she got a size of her mam’s ghostbusters shirt(where she got her love of it) and declared she’d wear it until the day she died. She got to two and a half days before it started smelling and her mam and dad had to wrestle her out of it

33, Who would wear “not guilty’ t-shirt/Who would wear “sin” t-shirt?

Ciara is in the “not guilty” and Liara is in “sin”, but they would swap regularly because Liara always steals Ciara’s clothes

36, Who is the social media addict?

Neither actualy. They dont go near social media very much. Theres no real reason, they just do withoiyt it mostly. They post pictures occasionally but beyond that? Nothing
