15x20 Coda, Crack and Fluff, Jimmy and Kansas are in Heaven
I have no good explanation for this. I was in the middle of writing a "serious" coda... then the stuff about Jimmy and Kansas came out and this happened instead
Dean opened his eyes to a bright, blue sky.
âWhat the fuck?â he muttered, realizing he was lying on the ground outside. Sitting up, he looked around, trying to get his bearings, then everything came flooding back to him. The vamp mimes, that fucking piece of rebar, piercing painâhe looked down at himself and frowned. These were not the clothes heâd been wearing on that hunt.Â
âFuck,â he said aloud as it hit him. âIâm dead.â
Getting to his feet, he stared at the building heâd ended up beside. The Roadhouse? He thought his Heaven was setting off fireworks with Sammy. Then a familiar figure stepped out onto the porch and called, âDean!â
âBobby?â Dean asked as he approached the porch.
âWhat the hell are you doing here, boy?â Bobby asked, pulling him into a hug. âThought you had several more years in you.â
âYeah, well, bad luck.â He really was gonna have to come up with a better story for how he got here than death by glorified rusty nail.
Pulling away from Bobby, he looked at the lit windows of the Roadhouse. Was that "Dust in the Wind" playing from inside? âWhat memory is this?â
âIt isnât one.â Bobby clapped him on the shoulder. âHeavenâs completely different now. Jack changed everything. Everyoneâs together, we can go wherever we want, do whatever we want.â He gestured to the Roadhouse door. âTurns out that means a lot of parties inside.â
âShit, alright.â Dean smiled. âWay to go Jack.â
âWasnât just his idea, though. Castiel helped.â
Deanâs heart skipped a beat, or wouldâve if it was still beating. He stared at Bobby, afraid he hadnât heard him right. âCas  helped?â
Bobby grinned. âA week ago, or something like thatâtime passes strange hereâJack showed up and introduced himself. Brought Cas with him.â
âWait, wait, wait,â Dean interrupted. âA week ago? What the hell? Why didnât Jack bring Cas down to Earth? Sammy and I, we were going crazyââ He cut himself off. He didnât want to remember his last days on Earth. The way he and Sam had poured through books of lore, trying to find a spell, something, anything, to bring Cas back. The long, sleepless nights, the way his eyes burned as he scanned yellowed pages, the fear that they might never get Cas back, that he might never get to give Cas a reply⌠Even after defeating Chuck, returning to run-of-the-mill monster hunts, nothing had seemed normal. Nothing had seemed right.
âI donât know,â Bobby said, frowning. âCas said he had work to do here first. Heâs insideââ
The words hadnât left his mouth before Dean was wrenching open the door to the Roadhouse and rushing inside. Calls and greetings rose around him, but he couldnât pay them any attention, too intent on scanning the room.Â
There, in the corner, sitting at a table near a stage where a band played. The angel he never thought heâd see again. âCas!â Dean called and rushed forward.Â
A woman at the same table nudged Casâ shoulder, and Cas turned from watching the band. His eyes met Deanâs, then widened, and a look of horror crossed over his face.
âWait, wait!â he exclaimed, lifting his hands up in defense, and holy fuckâDean skidded to a stop in front of the table, the words, I love you on his tongue. That was not Casâ voice. And the man in front of him was not Cas.
He was Jimmy.
Dean stared at him, the joy and relief that had urged him forward giving way to shock and disappointment. If heâd paused for one second before running over, he wouldâve realized in an instant that the man in front of him wasnât Cas. There were several giveaways. For one, the polo shirt and khakis Jimmy was wearing. Two, his arm around the woman sitting in the chair next to himâhis wife, Dean was assuming.
âWhat the fuck are you doing here?â Dean managed, realizing heâd been staring with his mouth open. He shut it and tried to not look as betrayed as he felt.
âI live down the road,â Jimmy said, looking affronted. âWell, not live, because I guess weâre all deadââ
âWhereâs Cas?â
âHeâs, um,â Jimmy rubbed the back of his neck and looked around the room. âHe was here a moment ago, but I donât know where he went.â
Dean blinked at him, then turned to scan the room. âAnyone seen Cas leave?â he called desperately. He got a mixture of noncommittal sounds and shrugs. Just his luck. The one time he was finally ready to tell Cas how he felt, and Cas was nowhere to be found.
Bobby reached his side. âI see youâve met Jimmy. Again.â
âYeah.â He stared at Jimmy, who shifted uncomfortably in his seat. âThis is one hell of a situation.â Which was ironic, considering he was in Heaven right now.
âItâs not my fault!â Jimmy protested. âI wasnât expecting Castiel to show up looking like me! Besides, I thought angels didnât go to Heaven when they died.â
âWell, Cas is special,â Dean spluttered. âHe gets to keep his vessel, I guess. And if anyone deserves to be in Heaven, itâs him.âÂ
Tearing his eyes from the imposter, he turned to Bobby. âWhat the hell is going on?â he muttered. âWhy is Jimmy in my Heaven?â It wasnât that he hated the guy; it was just incredibly difficult to look at himâJimmy having the same face as Cas and all.
âLike I said,â Bobby explained patiently, âitâs not  your  heaven. Itâs everyoneâs. Case in point, your dad has a house not five minutes from here.â
âFuck.â Sam was gonna  love  that. âWait.â He scanned the room again, slower now. There was Ellen, Jo, Mrs. Tranâfuck, he was gonna have a lot of explaining to do about Kevin. âWhereâs mom?â
Bobby grimaced. âHer and John split up, pretty hairy situation. Sheâs doing well now, though, much better off without him. Do you know a stuck-up British guy by the name of Ketch?â
âYouâre joking. Not him and mom⌠Together?â Bobby nodded and Dean swore under his breath. âThis place isnât what I was expecting at all.â
âIf I might add,â Jimmy spoke up and Dean looked at him. âCastiel has been creating quite the disturbance since he got here. Heaven was⌠peaceful before him. Not so much now.â
âWhatâs he talking about?â Dean asked Bobby.
âWell, turns out Cas isnât such a fan of JohnââÂ
âHe nearly started a fight!â Jimmy interjected. âThis is Heaven, for Heavenâs sake!â
Dean couldnât help but grin, and Bobby returned the smile. âCome on,â he said, leading Dean away from Jimmy. âCas will turn up soon enough. Iâm sure Jack will too. Thereâs a lot of people here who are happy to see you.â
âRight, yeah,â Dean said, trying to hide the fact that, at the moment, the only person he wanted to see was Cas. He let Bobby lead him to the bar where Ellen smiled and waved at them. âIcarus-Borne on Wings of Steelâ filled the air and he frowned. That sounded pretty good for a cover band.Â
He glanced at the stage and stopped in his tracks. âIs that⌠Kansas?â
Bobby nodded. âThey all died when their tour bus crashed. I would say itâs a shame, but Iâm enjoying the live music too much.â
Dean shook his head in disbelief. First Jimmy, now Kansas. Heaven was⌠interesting, to say the least. Overwhelming was another way to put it. If only Cas would show up, he could start to appreciate it all.Â
Cas? he prayed silently. Iâm here, buddy. I wanna⌠I wanna see you. He waited for the sound of wings, but none came, and disappointment sunk in his chest.
He made his way through the Roadhouse, greeting old friends, making up a badass story for how he diedâthirteen vamps, an epic car chase, and liberal use of his grenade launcherâbut his smile felt forced. Where the hell was Cas? Maybe he was angry Dean had stayed silent during his love confession. In Deanâs defense, Cas had thrown a lot at him all at once. Heâd been in a state of shock for days after. Even now he wasnât completely sure he hadnât dreamt the whole thing up.
âJimmy,â he called, returning to the table. He caught the way Jimmy rolled his eyes before looking up at him.Â
âYes?â
âCas, heâs been alright, hasnât he? I mean, did he, um, has he said anything about me?â
Jimmyâs eye twitched and his wife laughed. âWhat has he not said about youâthatâs the real question,â she answered.Â
âHe wonât shut up,â Jimmy added. He gestured to Kansas, to the bar. âAll this, itâs been for you. Giving Kansas a gig here, the free, unlimited liquor. He acts like heâs designing Heaven for everyone, but itâs painfully clear itâs all for you. He even brought in the Impala, which he wonât let anyone near, by the way.â
Baby was here? Obviously. She was as good a car as cars got. Of course Cas understood that. âSo, heâs not mad at me?â he pressed.
Jimmy let out an exasperated sigh and looked at his wife. âThis is the nonsense I had to put up with, the whole time Castiel was possessing me.â He looked back at Dean. âNo. Not that I know of. Did you two really not get together on Earth? After all this time?â
âWeâve been busy,â Dean protested. âSaving the world, defeating Godâwe havenât exactly had time for heart to heart talks.â That wasnât strictly true, but the truth wasnât something he was proud of. All these years and heâd never worked up the courage to tell Cas how he truly felt. But now he had a second chance, if only Cas would show.Â
âWell, hopefully you two can talk it out soon because if I have to see Castiel stare at you longingly across the room one more time, even if itâs not through my own eyes anymore, Iâm gonna request a transfer to hell.â With that, he turned back to his wife, and Dean stammered for a snarky retort. Unable to come up with one that preserved the last shreds of his dignity, he slunk away.
Joining Jo and Charlie at the bar, he listened as Charlie told him about the recent larping tournament she had organized. He paid attention, nodding and laughing at the right moments, but his eyes kept searching the room for any glimpse of a trenchcoat.Â
The door to the Roadhouse opened and Dean turned expectantly, his heart racing. Rufus raised a hand in greeting as he stepped inside and Dean sighed.Â
Please, Cas, he prayed. I have so much to tell you.
His eyes returned to Jimmy again. Same hair, same face, same eyes as Cas. But so different. So human. Cas, though⌠Cas was gorgeousâthe way he stared at Dean so intently, the way he carried himself, the way his eyes glowed with angelic strength, such blue eyes, and his hands, holy fuck...
âFor Peteâs sake!â Jimmy exclaimed and Dean startled, realizing heâd been staring for who knew how long. Jimmy jabbed his finger at a door on the back wall. âHeâs hiding in there.â
âW-WhatâŚ?â
Jimmy looked heavenwardsâwell, at the ceilingâfor a long moment before meeting Deanâs eyes. âCastiel panicked when he heard you were here, something about not expecting you so soonââ
Dean stopped listening, already shoving his stool aside and rushing to the door. The doorknob didnât budge so he knocked. âCas? Cas, are you in there?â
A long pause, then a muffled, âYes.â
Dean leaned closer to the door to hear better. âCas, what the hell, man? What are you doing in there?â He waited for a response, but none came. âCas?â he pressed, afraid the angel had flown the coop.
The door opened slowly, and Dean took a step back. Cas stood with one hand on the doorknob, an embarrassed look on his face. âHello, Dean.â
The sound of those familiar words, in that familiar voice, made Dean weak at the knees. He forced his voice to be steady as he said, âHi, Cas.â
Cas studied him. âYou died so soon.â
Dean huffed a laugh. âYeah, sick joke, right?â
âHow did it happen?â Cas started to ask, but Dean waved his hand.Â
âNot important. The better question is, why have you been avoiding me?â His voice faltered at a sudden fear that he wouldnât like the answer. Maybe Cas had had too much time to think since the night he died, maybe he was regretting everything heâd said, maybe Deanâs silence had spoiled the momentâ
Cas ducked his head, studying his shoes. âI wasnât sure⌠I never expected to see you again. I thought my death was final. Then Jack awakened me and brought me from the Empty, and...â
âAnd?â
âAnd I wasnât sure how you would react to my reappearance.â Cas raised his head to meet Deanâs eyes. âI said a lot of things before I died, and I donât know how things stand between us now.âÂ
âThen let me speak.â He glanced over his shoulder to see everyone watching them. In all the times heâd pictured this moment, heâd never imagined having an audience, let alone background music courtesy of Kansas. But heâd be damned if he went one moment longer without telling Cas the truth.Â
Focusing on those blue eyes again, he took a deep breath and said, âYou were wrong.â Cas frowned a little and Dean continued, âYou  can  have me. I love you, Casâhave for years now. I just never⌠I never knew how to say it.â Cas watched him, face serious, eyes intent. So undeniably Castiel. âI love you. So goddamn much. Please say itâs not too late. Please tell me youâre not having second thoughts.â
A smile slowly spread over Casâs face. âItâs not too late, Dean. Iâll always love you.â
Relief rushed over Dean. Before he could think twice about it, he stepped forward, grabbed Casâ tie, and pulled him in to kiss him. He felt Casâ hand rise to his cheek, then Cas was kissing him back and people were cheering, but Dean ignored them all, wrapping his free arm around Cas to pull him closer.Â
âI thought you didnât love me back,â Cas whispered, pushing his forehead against Deanâs when they broke apart after seconds, or maybe years. Time in Heaven was different, after all.
âI canât believe you hid in a closet to avoid me.â
Cas laughed a little. âNot my finest moment.â
âI almost confessed my love to Jimmy; I thought he was you.â
âOh, yes. I suspect his being here is going to cause some confusion.â Cas pulled away to frown at Jimmy over Deanâs shoulder. âAnd he was not supposed to tell you where I was.â
Dean laughed. âIâm just so glad youâre here.â He kissed Cas again, deeply, slipping his hands under the worn fabric of the trenchcoat. Casâ fingers slid along his neck and in his hair. Finally, after so long...
Though his mind was spinning, he caught Jimmyâs voice rise above Kansas playing âThe Wall,â âFirst I had to hear all of Castielâs thoughts about Dean while he possessed me, now I have to share a Heaven with themââ
âGet a room!â Jo called. Dean waved her off as Cas pulled him into the supply room. Heâd make a comment later on the irony of hiding in a closet. Right now, he nearly tripped over his feet in his haste to keep kissing Cas while fumbling to pull the door shut behind them. Time to start enjoying the afterlife.
