Mid Year Book Freak Out Tag (2024)

I know I'm a bit late with this but I figured I might as well still do it 🤷‍♀️I wasn't tagged but hey if you also haven't done it and want to consider this a tag, feel free lmao

This is hard to narrow down because I've read some absolute crackers and nothing is like super standing out from the rest. Maybe The Next Big Thing by James Colley just for how fun and Aussie it was, or maybe Dumb Witness by Agatha Christie because it was a clever mystery with some really great Poirot/Hastings banter.

Another toughie because though I've not read many sequels, the ones I have picked up have all be great. Recently I caught up on the last two The Adventure Zone graphic novels and god I just love that series so much. I loved the podcast and I think they're done a great job of adapting them.

Also right up there are Everyone on this Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson and The Kiss Curse by Erin Sterling, both of which I adored.

I've surprisingly not re-read all that many books this year (yet anyway, there's a couple I wouldn't mind getting to). So I think it has to be The Shadow of the Wind. That's been one of my fave books for years now and it had been a while since I last picked it up so it was so great to revisit it again.

As it has been for the last few years, the genre I've been reading most is mystery. Most of those are Agatha Christie's since I try and read one a month.

Oh theres a few of these. A Botanical Daughter was probably my most anticipated release of the year but it took aaaggggesss for me to get my hands on a copy because the place i pre-ordered it from went into voluntary administration so my copy was never shipped. I mean I probably wasn't going to read it until October anyway but while waiting for it to arrive I also read some reviews that said it kind of missed the mark so I'm a little less excited now. The other book I still havent got around to picking up is Kill Your Husband by Jack Heath even though I was really excited for it too. And then there's also Clairmont by Lesley McDowell which I hadn't known was coming out but I saw in store and immediately bought and then also didn't read it.

Definitely Graveyard Shift by M.L. Rio. I think Ben Aaranovitch also has something new coming around September but I'll admit I'm a little behind on all of the rivers of london novellas and stuff. The Benjamin Stevenson has a Christmas book coming and I think the next book in the Ex Hex series is also due out and I'll probably pick it up pretty quick.

Hopeless Aromantic. Huge disappointment. I was really interested in a queer nonfic book that focused on aromanticism rather than asexuality and it just missed the mark by so much. It was poorly researched and cobbled together and frankly not worth anyone's time.

The Mysterious Mr Quin by Agatha Christie. I've read a few of her short story collections before so I went in expecting the usual sort of thing and it definitely felt like it was going along similar lines to start. But it got weird. In a good way. It feels as if the stories flirt with fantasy elements, and the last one even crosses over maybe? almost? Mr Harley Quin came off as kind of creepy too. It was definitely not quite like her usual stuff and I really really enjoyed it.

I've read from I think 9 or 10 authors that were new to me and yet I'm not really sure how to answer this, no one super stands out. Maybe Erin Sterling? I've read two of her romances this year (tho does she really count since it's the pen name for rachel hawkins and i've read one of her mysteries?), the book I read from James Colley was also really good and I'd probably pick up whatever he wrote next, so maybe him? From a nonfic author, Carnage by Mark Dapin (an Aussie true crime book) was very interesting and I liked he way he handled such difficult topics, so maybe him?

Probably Alex Easton from the T Kingfisher novellas?

I don't think anything I've read this year has really made me cry. I thought Loveless might but it didn't this time around. I guess I did get a bit blurry eyed during The Adventure Zone: Eleventh Hour graphic novel and same with Carnage, but not full tears.

Oh, so many lmao. The TAZ graphic novels, Ghosts: The Button House Archives, The Thread That Binds, Everyone On This Train is a Suspect, Cain's Jawbone (happy that I got it solved though I never got confirmation I was right lmao).

Okay this one is easy. My Folio Society edition of The Shadow of the Wind. Also, since I answered this last year I've also got the Folio Society edition of Frankenstein and I know I got it last year but I couldn't not mention it.

I also found some of Georgette Heyer's mysteries in a great edition at the lifeline book fest

I have 6 more Agatha Christie books to read (I'm partway through one of them now). Then there's also the copy of Northanger Abbey that Lauren annotated for Christmas last year, that'll be coming up soon, and whatever book we decide to annotate and swap for this years present. I'd like to spend October reading at least a couple of Frankenstein/Mary Shelley inspired books so I'll probs try and get to A Botanical Daughter then, maybe Clairmont and maybe Chicano Frankenstein or any of the others I have. I'd also really like to get to Every Time I Go On Vacation Someone Dies but I'm saving it for like the end of the year when it's summer.

1. caitjinx - they make me feral & it’s so fucking fun and angsty to write/read fic about them hehe i love it! they have a dynamic that leads perfectly to conflict & *intrigue*, they’re narrative foils for each other & there’s a *lot* to play with. plus they’re just so hot together & i’m incredibly weak for the enemies to lovers trope lol

2. lightcannon - truly, they’re joint first in my heart, but for this they can be no.2 - they make me just as feral as caitjinx, but it’s like, a different *flavour* of feral - a more comforting flavour maybe? idk lol, but i *adore* them. on the surface, they’re worlds apart, but they actually have so bloody much in common - mostly trauma 😆

3. serajinx - now, this was a toughie & i *almost* put timebomb here, but honestly serajinx is such a lovely little pairing 😍 because of seraphine’s ability to hear people’s songs, she has a unique insight into who jinx really is & how her extraordinary mind works, which is just. so so special. 🫶

4. timebomb - ah, the classic childhood friends to enemies to friends(?) to lovers lol - plenty of conflict & angst in this one too, plus so much love & history & *family ties* - idc if they’re romantic, sexual, platonic, or queer platonic fuck buddies lol, i *love* them together. also, the canon for them breaks my fucking heart & i desperately need to know what happened when ekko tried to ‘save’ jinx, prior to the events of episode 4 onwards - it kills me everytime i think of the fact that there’s a whole deleted scene of this that we might never get to see 😭

5. liquorbomb - okay this might be last on my list but it’s actually the first jinx ship i ever got into lol the idea of jinx secretly hooking up with/falling for ‘chuck’ the bartender is just too good ahaha - there’s a *fantastic* fic about this by @unknownstellardepths which has fun with the chuck x jinx dynamic, whilst also deeply developing thieram’s character & backstory - a great example of a fic that takes a minor character in canon & makes them the star - i cannot recommend it highly enough!

Why’d you start writing? Do you think you’ll ever stop? ~ I always find this question so interesting!! Really, because the more I try and find a core root as to why I started, the further back that root seems to go. Initially, I I thought I started writing bc of sheer creative impulse—and by that I mean one day, about 5ish years ago, I was literally sitting on my couch, playing Pokémon Platinum, and I said out loud “Hey! I wanna write a story about this Houndoom on my team :3” Got up, fished out an unused notebook from my 6th grade backpack, and started writing. Seriously, that’s it 😂—that’s where I thought it all started. But the more I think about it, as I said, the more I realized that I’ve had writing genes in me long before this! For starters, when I was 3ish~, I used to write little stories and staple ‘em together (“Monica the Fox” they were called xD God I wish I had still had them shshshsh). However, that’s not all that special, considering a whole lot of kids write stories x,D. I think where it REALLY started goes back to when I was in 3rd grade, wherein we had to write a “personal narrative” about a fun experience in our lives. Me being me, I decided to write about me getting my pet betta fish. Yeeehaw! The details are very fuzzy—obviously, considering it was 8 years ago LMAO—but all I know is that, after we all submitted our work, our teacher called us over to the carpet and announced that it was story time. Only she wasn’t reading any story; she was reading my story :0 My stupid little narrative about my betta fish was good enough for circle time on the carpet—which is made all the more funny to me bc Mrs. C thought I was a pest 😂 Anywho, this little experience—while heartening at the time!—managed to completely disappear into my brain’s abyss. So much so that it never crossed my mind—not once—until I found myself obsessed with writing stories years later 😂 So…. I guess the answer to that one technically goes back to 3yo Pichu and her vulpine stories. But the true spark was prolly born back in my 3rd grade classroom <333

And in terms of stopping??? That’s a hard, stubborn NO! xD As of now, as a matter of fact, I’m actually exclusively applying to colleges that have notable creative writing programs. The hobby really has developed into something special over the years, and I cannot express how grateful I am to have found a place where that hobby can be shared safely and with such kind reception. I don’t plan on stopping now, and I hope I never will! <333

What’s the most important thing about writing for you? ~ Hmm…. that’s a toughie!!! There are so many vital things to keep in mind when putting pen to paper—way too many to even count. Though, if I had to say what was most important to me, I think I’ma have to go with rhythm. It’s prolly what swarms around in my mind most when I’m writing—and what drives me the MOST effing insane 😂 If a sentence sounds crunchy, then I ain’t budging until I can smooth it out. Brain is never satisfied until it feels as if the words go down smoothly and are easy to the eye, like calm and soothing colors on a canvas. Does it take a lot of brainpower??? Heck yeah! Has it flipped a few chairs?? Perhaps. Does it feel hella satisfying and rewarding once I get that melodic sentence down?? You know it! <333

Answer: Listen, everyone was talking about Astarion so I was intrigued by him, thinking he would be my ABSOLUTE favorite, but as soon as my eyes laid on Karlach and heard her voice, saw her in action...I was HOOKED, LINE AND SINKER for her! So I probably fell for her first. Then Astarion.

The character I never expected to love as much as I do now:

Answer: Honestly....Gale. I just heard things about him talking about his ex-lover Mystra and can kinda seem like he's a know it all at everything. But obviously, since I played and even started romancing him with Asha...he's such a great character with a great story. Like all the BG3 party let's be honest... He has so much emotion and love for your Tav even when you're not romancing him. (If you make the right choices that is lmao) He just wants to show off his magic skills and be praised! 🥺

The character everyone else loves that I don’t:

Answer: Enver Gortash seems pretty popular in the fandom, but I can't stand him...It might be because I'm biased and he brought harm and trauma to my wife Karlach. I don't care for Minthara either? But in her defense, I hadn't really gotten a chance to because I've killed her twice already before she could potentionlly join later on 💀

First impression: Too cool for school tbh. Like the best comparison I have for it is hearing people hype up the quarterback for like a high school football team in a movie and thinking to yourself, "He's an idiot, isn't he?" The kinda guy that's liked for the shallowest of reasons—either his looks or what he can get people rather than his skills or personality. Perhaps not a fraud... but not all that impressive either. This is all cuz of how he was introduced before his teasers came out. All we had to judge him off of was all the other characters' talking him up in their voice lines, so before he actually dropped, I was just sitting there thinking to myself god, is he really all that they're making him out to be or is it the fact that Mondstadt has no mandatory education program? I was sure I wouldn't be caught in his web.

Impression now: Well, I dropped $100 on him back in the day during his first banner, so I think we all know what I thought of him after I actually got the chance to MEET him

Favorite moment: God that's a toughie tbh... I know you hate that all of his appearances are limited events but I personally LOVE that fact because it means that everyone who's never played the game just hearing people talk him up probably all have the same first impression that I did LMAO. But if I have to pick a moment... well... "Destroy Mondstadt, destroy everything." is PROBABLY when I fell in love with him? Just realizing how lonely and isolated he is because he didn't know how to connect with people is so relatable too, and with the addition of Dragonspine at the time when we were bone dry for content? Yeah, I think that's gotta be my fave moment, though him stabbing his double was pretty hot too LMFAO

Idea for a story: I have this really goofy (but also angsty at the right times) story in my drafts that I never finished where Diluc and Kaeya have to actually get along with each other for once to Sus Out his Susiness™

Unpopular opinion: This is more of a headcanon than anything, but do you guys ever think that his modesty originates from a rather forced place? Like I imagine he was super cold and unemotional about most things while with Rhinedottir, just solely thinking about his own efficiency and results more than his feelings. So what if he wasn't always the kind of guy to gently brush off any declarations of him being a genius? What if, before he started uncovering the natural beauty of the world for what it is rather than what it gets him, he wasn't very good at gracefully accepting compliments? Someone would say he's good at something and he responds with a toneless, "Naturally." I mean, to back this up, his vision story quite literally says he was not surprised to receive one. Maybe Timaeus was the ultimate test when it came to having patience with the slower people in a similar field as him LMFAO

Favorite relationship: Kaebedo for life.

...Wait, you mean canonically? Fine then, him being Klee's big brother is my favorite thing ever. Being pen pals with Scara is pretty great too though LMFAO ty Irodori festival

Favorite headcanon: In that story I have in my drafts, I have a part where he practically dives under a table to grab a snack—said snack being a spider. Or maybe the one where Klee gets into the habit of doing his braids for him. Or maaaaybe the one where Rhinedottir just left him all alone to figure it out on his own one day because she realized she was actively hindering him from becoming as human as she'd like him to be with her frigid teachings and meticulous nature. Because if he's not human enough, he's a failure, of course.

Friendship ask- Mina and Art

When I think they became friends (if canon already hasn't showed how they became friends): Well, canon of course took care of this one in incomparable fashion with full-on crying in each other's arms and pledging to be like brother and sister so... (🥺)

My favorite scene of them: Like I said.

A random headcanon I have of them: Hm...I think it would be nice if after everything Arthur threw Mina and Jonathan a Proper Wedding (well, the reception, anyway). It would be a nice gesture in Lucy's memory, too..."Let me throw you the wedding I couldn't have."

My favorite thing about them: Just...idk, bonding over their grief for Lucy, Arthur almost immediately breaking down and crying in Mina's arms and her completely nonjudgmentally just holding him while he cried...the shit about the "mother instinct" or whatever was so silly like no Mina you are just a sweet person who lets people feel comfortable being themselves around you (but also ofc she will make a wonderful mother).

A scene I wish we had of them: Gosh, just about anything not drenched in grief. 🥺

A scene with them that I want to rewrite/change in some way: Well for starters I'd have Mina not going on about the Mother Instinct or whatever...not only is it Weird and Sexist and Gender Essentialist it's also lowkey kind of navel-gazey like that man is having a Whole Nervous Breakdown in your arms Mina FOCUS.

What makes me like their friendship: Immediately swearing undying loyalty on the level of siblings? They're both just so Noble and Lowkey Dramatic oml. ❤️

Who I think is the ”crazier” one: Oh gosh this one is a tie I think. On the post abt him and Jack I said Arthur was crazier in terms of being Down To Clown At All Times but that was only in comparison. I think he and Mina have about equal amounts of that. Mina maybe sometimes gets too wrapped up in trying to adhere to gender norms, but at her core she is Ride Or Fucking Die, down for anything and everything.

Would I change anything about their friendship? Hm aside from taking out Mina's weird shit about gender? I would just give More of it. More casual hanging out, more talking about stupid shit, more remembering Lucy....that kind of stuff.

A song that reminds me of them: Uh,,,I'll get back to you on this one.

Which one of the friends can I relate to more? In any given pair, go for the Nerd. Mina, no question.

A word to describe them: Camaraderie. Or commiseration. But that's sad.

What I think would have happened if they never met: Oh gosh, I mean, I can't really imagine Mina joining the Crew of Light without meeting Arthur, right? Which would have meant they didn't get Jonathan's journal, or his and Mina's excellent Document Review Skills, or Mina's overall competence....but then again, Mina wouldn't have had to go through the pain of being forced to the side and cut off from her husband's trust just because of her sex/gender. A toughie for sure.

If I can picture them to be more than only friends: At most I would see them being like metamours...like they're both in the polycule but they don't necessarily do stuff with each other specifically lmao. Not just bc of the promise to be "like siblings," which tbh was sometimes used as a way to recontextualize romantic feelings deemed to be "inappropriate" anyway ("Yeah I love him, not like that tho I'm a good married Christian woman!" u kno), but like. I mean in this case I think it does actually fit their dynamic.

If I would want to be friends with them: Oh my god yes, obviously.

For Sunny, I see him taking over Del's Tech company in the future and Del retires early to spend more time with his husband and family.

With Kel, he probably had a dream of being a pro basketball player as a kid, but he decides on changing that to be the new gym teacher the school Sunny and Mari transferred to when first moving into Ways-Off. It being a way of doing a job he loves while also being close to the person he loves.~

With Aubrey, I can see her with either hairstyling, a tattoo artist or even a mechanic since it's canon in game she's pretty handy with tools. Although I think I'm opting for a hairstylist since it's more her style lmao

Hero definitely has a job in cooking and baking- I like to thing he runs his own sweets shop in town :D him often bringing home leftover treats from the day to have for dessert later that night with his family!~

With Basil, I have it so that he'd open a flower shop right next to Aubrey's business and help her business out on occasion by providing fresh flowers to be out and on display in her Hair Salon.~ Her then helping him out by directing any people interested over to him.~

But then for Mari, that's a bit of a tough one mainly because of her disability. An amputated limb comes with all sorts of problems and issues. And sadly these kinds never go away over time. I do have it so that she at least has a college degree in Music, but I'm not too sure on what I'm gonna have her do with it.

For now, she'll simply have the "Stay at home Mom" position as she will need recovery time from her pregnancy, and as part of some angst I have planned, when he's born, Lucas is quite smaller than the average new born- Mari commenting on how he's even small than Sunny was. HMMMM.... that's a toughie.... my brain for some reason leapt to what the answer would have been if you asked me this two years ago, and that answer is a specific version of frank in a fic that i never actually published... huh actually now that i think about it i think the reason i liked him so much is because he was the first time i ever really allowed one of my characters to be a true asshole?

FAVORITE CHARACTER

Gibson! I find him very endearing. He’s smug and pretentious, but he just tries so, so hard literally all of the time. I enjoyed watching him become more humbled and open minded over time, reminds me of me when I was a pretentious, know-it-all teenager lmao. I just enjoyed every second of screen time he got throughout the series

SECOND FAVORITE CHARACTER

Antauri! It’s hard for me to articulate exactly why I love Antauri. He’s just one of the most interesting characters in the series, in my opinion. I love listening to him talk, not just because of his voice but just because I find myself so captivated by anything he has to say. The way he teaches and protects Chiro, but also believes in his intelligence and abilities (usually) makes him what I believe a mentor character should be.

LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER

Hmmmm that’s a toughie, I like pretty much all of the characters… I guess Skelemandarin specifically is kind of up and down for me, but I still like him, it’s more so his role in the series later on, I guess. Quite especially in the last season, he’s just kind of there to be Valeena’s lackey and do the hard stuff for her. But, that’s more of a writing issue than an actual issue I have with the character. Also I feel like we deserved to see the two Mandarins interact at least once.

THE CHARACTER I'M MOST LIKE

This one is also tough hahaaaaaa

I guess I’m a combination of Gibson (tries too hard, especially to sound smart and be likeable), Jinmay (tries to be kind to others, not having a solid grip on my identity), and SPRX-77 (deflects bad things that happen to me by turning them into jokes).

FAVORITE PAIRING

GibOtto! Every interaction the two of them have is just a delight to watch, I love watching their personalities play off of each other. Their relationship throughout the series develops in such a sweet way. To me it almost felt like, while all the Spova stuff was going on, Gibson and Otto were just having their own romance arc in the background lmao. I know that, even if we did get an ending, GibOtto would likely never actually be canon, but it just feels like such a natural progression of their relationship, to me at least.

Also if they were to put their heads together to invent things more often, they would be practically unstoppable, I’m just sayin

LEAST FAVORITE PAIRING

Oof uuhhhh, I guess besides the obvious no no’s, maybe Gibova? For no big reason other than that I think it’s dull and has no basis.

FAVORITE MOMENT

OOF there are a TON of good moments in this show hahaaaaaa. I’ve only watched most episodes once (I only got into the series a few months ago), but I would say a few of my favorites are; the scene in the convenience store, Antauri’s moments in “A Ghost in the Machinder,” baby monkeys, and Mandarin’s introduction scene. The I, Chiro saga as a whole is wonderful, but I think my favorite of it would be the scene where Antauri comes back to life. Also obligatory mention to Otto and Gibson hugging and holding hands in “Galactic Smash.”

I’m very indecisive.

RATING OUT OF 10

8/10! There’s some questionable writing decisions sprinkled throughout, but it’s an overall amazing series with so much potential to it’s characters and universe. Even the few bad episodes had at least something I found enjoyable about them. I highly recommend this show to anyone looking for something funny and cute and action-y, but also with a surprising amount of depth to it. (Probably could’ve been bumped up to an 8.5 or 9 if it had an ending but… disney hates joy)

GARGOYLES

FAVORITE CHARACTER

Lexington! I found him to be unique for the “tech smart” one of the group. Usually these types of characters are cynical, dry, skeptical, logic-driven, and have a holier-than-thou attitude. And while Lex can be dry and sarcastic sometimes (especially towards Brooklyn or Broadway), he never thinks of himself as more important than anyone else in his clan, and doesn’t bring anyone down (beyond playful ribbing) to feel good about himself. And something I thought was very refreshing about his character is that, despite being the “computer guy,” he’s shown to be angry, vengeful, and irrational at times. His decisions aren’t all dictated by “logic,” (IE never showing emotion ever because “eMoTiOnS aRe IlLoGiCaL”) he’s allowed to make bad choices and feel hurt about things, especially since he’s young (the equivalent of 18). Being smart doesn’t exempt you from making mistakes or feeling real, raw emotions and Lex encapsulates that perfectly.

Also he’s “adorable with a dark side” and that is some fine character trope RIGHT there

SECOND FAVORITE CHARACTER

Demona! What a rollercoaster of a character, to this day she’s, not just one of the most compelling female villains, but one of the most compelling villains in general. The writers do well to let you understand and sympathize completely with her motivations, but don’t hold back on how ruthless and despicable she can be. In complete denial mode over the loss of her clan, forced to walk the Earth for over a thousand years as an immortal, all the while being hunted down by the Hunters and Macbeth, it’s easy to understand why she is the way she is now. It’s so nice to have a female villain that has such deep-rooted character flaws and trauma that it’s just embedded in her every word and action.

LEAST FAVORITE CHARACTER

There are many, many well-written characters in this show that it’s hard to choose. But, I would probably say the Archmage. Really only having prevalence in the first Avalon arc, he has no real motivation beyond ��me want ultimate power.” And his only real narrative purpose in the series as a whole was to cause Demona and Macbeth to be cursed.

Also Oberon is just kind of an annoying bitch

I know I draw Lexington and Staghart quite a bit, but the best pairing in the show is undoubtedly Goliath/Elisa. From day one their chemistry was amazing and believable. They are both so, so good for each other in every sense. Their personalities just fit together so perfectly, not in the sense that they 100% always get along all of the time, but in a way where they never stop trying for each other. Trying to better themselves, trying to understand each other’s point of view, trying to better the world around them. There is just so much love put into all of their actions and decisions. (also the woman being the one to shut out conversation and deny her obvious romantic feelings is a nice change of pace)

Although if we wanna talk about pairings that at least deserve to exist, then I can’t say I’m a fan of Brooklyn/Katana. Not any fault of Katana or her character, I just HATE the Timedancer storyline. HATE it. If there’s any AUs where Brooklyn and Katana meet without all of that bullshit I’d probably like it more (because I do really like their son, Nashville).

FAVORITE MOMENT

“I don’t remember any explosions in Bambi.” Also the Golisa kiss is still A+ romance. The episode with Brooklyn having to take the helm with Goliath gone is a solid episode. I love how, despite being entirely cut out for leadership, it was still a scary and daunting task for Brooklyn, especially since Goliath was gone without a trace and no one had any idea where he went. Brooklyn had no safety net going in and was understandably both distraught and overwhelmed to the point where he snapped at Hudson and gave up for a bit. That is just such a realistic reaction to that kind of situation and I feel like a lot of shows don’t do that kind of thing.

9/10! Gargoyles excels at taking somewhat typical plot points and taking them above and beyond, most especially through the spectacularly written characters and phenomenal execution in it’s storytelling. I never watched most of season three (the creator said it wasn’t canon so I didn’t bother), but I still highly, highly recommend watching Gargoyles if you haven’t yet. My only complaints are; the whole Timedancer thing I mentioned (though that was in the comic continuation and not the show itself), and while the Avalon World Tour arc had a lot of interesting moments, by the end of it I thought it kinda dragged (“Future Tense,” woke me right the fuck back up tho, hoo boy)

* he’s tough and you’re tough: you’re basically the most terrifying couple ever lmao

* Bakugou liked the fact that he could even spar with you in his free time

* You were also loud, but not too loud for Bakugou so h

* And you were just so cool to him

* He’d never say that out loud to you though

* So when you came home not saying a word he immediately realised something was up

* You two usually hung out at each other’s dorms even if the other one wasn’t back yet.

* Bakugou wasn’t dumb, he picked on little habits and things you tended to do

* And ranting to yourself about your day was one of them

* At first he thought it was best to let you be, as you usually said that to him when you were angry

* You usually weren’t the type to want physical contact much

* Sure kisses and things like that were fine but you two didn’t overdo it

* But then you sat down next to him, eyes teary and your bottom lip trembling

* Bakugou had never seen this sight but it broke his heart immediately

* He didn’t really know what to do at first

* Don’t blame him, he’s never really had to comfort people

* Usually he’d be the reason of their tears

* When you told him you needed cuddles though, he gave them immediately

7) Where did the title come from? 

I originally wrote this fic for a challenge, which I entered on a whim to try and push myself, and the prompt was the Enemies to Lovers trope. After thinking for a while about what I was gonna write, the idea for rival basketball teams just came to me and I instantly knew I was going to call it ‘It’s On!’ And I knew I wanted the reader character to say that at some point to Billy, so it seemed like the natural choice. 9) Were there any alternate versions of this fic?

Actually, yes. I keep saying that this fic blossomed into something I never expected, and I really mean it. I had written the first chapter for the challenge, not expecting to ever actually finish the rest of the fic, but then I had all these ideas for sub-plots and a back story for the reader’s family and then I knew I had to finish it. So I rewrote the entire first chapter to reflect the new direction. 

14) Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?

Ooh, this is a toughie. I guess, at its core, this story is about the pressures of life and how we each confront and deal with our own individual sources of pressure. I can’t say too much about this without giving away some plot that has yet to be revealed, but basically, the reader reacts explosively towards Billy when he puts a small amount of pressure on her, because deep down she is trying to cope with a greater source of pressure that hasn’t been dealt with. Writing this has certainly helped me to identify the root of some of the stresses in my own life. I dont think I actually answered the question 🤷🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ lol

Oh that’s tough. Geez.  They’re all such different genres??? Action, crack, romance, fluff??? AHHHH okay it’s probably A Pirate’s Life For Me (is that a shameless plug? why yes it is, ty for noticing pfff)

2. least favorite fic you wrote this year

ALSO TOUGH BECAUSE I LIKE ALL THE THINGS I WRITE??? DLKGSDJ Okay, I’m totally gonna loophole my way out of this and say my job application was my least fave thing i wrote this year pfffff (even if it landed me the job lmfao)

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

I feel like I’m being K.O.’d by each of these questions lmaooo.  Okay, okay, okay. UM. Let’s see there are so many omf my favorite overall scene is probably the Dabi vs. Endeavor scene from Lines Crossed.  Put a lot of hard work into that one and I think it paid off 💜 

12. favorite character to write about this year

alsdkgajkah another toughie.  It’s either Hawks or Dabi or Bakugou....  but I’m going with Dabi because I’ve written him the most.  

As to why, it’s because I love characters with multiple facets and layered backgrounds.  If the Dabi = Touya Todoroki theory is true, and he’s anything like fanon Touya, he will be one of the only characters I know of that went from being a prospective hero with a hard childhood to an outright villain who has the chance to go back. The complexity of that situation, the mystery of  what happened to him, the potential for redemption... god, that’s all such good fodder for my anti-hero/villain loving brain

15. something you learned this year

So the CTABB server went through an entire racingverse phase (some of us are still in it - high five moka), and I learned quite a bit about cars.  Also learned what a towing scheme was, about 2 days before I had to use that knowledge, lmao.  Thank u, racingverse dabihawks au fanfiction research - you saved me about $600.

hah, mine isn’t nearly as bad as star’s.  I have 18 current WIPS (like, one’s I’ve worked on in the past year)

23. fics you wanted to write but didn’t

One i haven’t gotten around to, but may still do, is one where Dabi rescues/adopts Eri (he’s the one she runs into while hauling ass away from Overhaul, instead of Deku and Mirio.  Dabi sees her cowering in fear while wrapped around his knees, and snaps.)  I just haven’t had the time RIP

HOW DO U CHOOSE OMG (gonna stick to bnha, because i’m frankly too scared to look at all the fics i have bookmarked and downloaded lmaO)

Ima recommend 5, because I’m contrary like that. 

Decision Height by @blueskiddoo (dabihawks, WIP slowburn, great characterization, fantastic pacing, epic action, beautifully written - a genuinely superb fic written by a genuinely superb human being who’s books i will 100% purchase as soon as the come available for pre-order)

Butterfly Effect by @bloodycarnations (dabihawks, WIP, slowburn - also freaking perfect characterization, amazing plot, lots of exploration into characters motivations and histories - truly would love to have it printed and sitting on my bookshelf tb, but not as much as much as i’d love to hug the shit out of thyandra)

Field Test by @kendrick-harlow (league-centric, dabi-centric - listen if i could have a fic turned into a movie, i’d want this to be it. fantastically written and somewhere between horror, found family, and absolute genius tie-in’s of the current bnha plot. lord have mercy i love this and all of kendrick’s fics)

Villain’s First Christmas by throwyourchaosinneutralanddrive (league-centric - found family league, extremely accurate characterization, hilarious, and literally the author i would vote to take over horikoshi’s job if anything ever happened to him - the amount of chaotic energy in these fics is thru the roof tbh, and i love the author like she’s my own flesh and blood (because she is, but that’s neither here nor there))

Hawks Needs to Stop Scaring the Shit Out of Shinsou, the Compilation by RadioMoth (Shinsou and Hawks-centric, hilariously written, criminally underrated, and with a friendship I’ve never seen before.  Def go check it out if you want to laugh and love on hawks and shinsou!)

(in all honesty tho, I’ve read SO MANY good fics this year, holy shit)
