"I don't care about the rest of your lack of comprehension in the medium but don't disrespect DEKU!"
What lack of comprehension ( I spent my time debunking the pile of crap you're writing in my mentions, you haven't wrote a single relevant argument so far.
As for Deku, I don't see why I should respect this fictional character. He's plain as hell, people constantly glaze him for his amazing traits when his showings struggle to keep up, he has no interesting flaws to nuance him as a character and is just a mouthpiece for the shitty themes of this manga, his character arc mostly consists in him learning to use his powers (how fascinating really...) and he utterly failed his main goal at the end out of sheer incompetence.
"wtf!! be mad cus your favourite villain died!!! but don't you dare accuse Deku of being lazy!"
Why ? Because you don't have any solid counter-argument to refute the fact that he stayed on his ass for 8 years without training to keep being a hero ? And that he needed Bakugo to offer him an easy solution on a plate to do something ?
Or is it because you're salty that Deku is indeed so incompetent at being a hero that he didn't even bother thinking about a plan to save Tomura when it was his main goal, and this despite having weeks ahead to think about it ?
Either way, cope harder pal.
"Lazy my foot bro. Bye bro. You spitting nothing actually."
First time someone trash one of your favs ? Don't worry it will be okay, just take a seat and some deep breaths.
"All the long paragraphs just took proof you lack of respect to the author"
Indeed I don't respect Horikoshi as a writer... And so ?
"and the rest of it just to prove you're just a person who spewing nothing."
He said after failing to prove me wrong even once.
"After losing One For All in the My Hero Academia storyline, Deku faces significant challenges."
Source : Trust me bro
"His journey without his quirk is explored in the series, particularly highlighting his determination and ingenuity in adapting to his new circumstances."
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/6856190d20c3a6bd27acd706888f1086/125c2b838a1afdf3-37/s540x810/b7d1db6714b854df93812d736905005be16db93f.jpg)
What "new circumstances" are you even babbling about, he literally came back to what he was at the start of the story and even said it isn't anything new for him to be quirkless again.
"They demonstrate that strategy, training, and personal growth are crucial. However, Deku's case is unique because his identity and journey have been so closely tied to One For All"
And in practice, how does being a former OFA user could stop Deku to work out to become a fighter like Shinso, Knuckleduster or Nighteye ? Go ahead, I'm curious.
"which fundamentally shifts his path when he loses it."
Lmao seriously ? That's the best you came up with to hide the fact that Deku never even tried to work out to still be a hero ?
Cause without the bs, you're basically saying : B-B-But it must have been really hard for him to lose a power he only had for not even 1/6 of his life, that's why he couldn't learn martial arts for some reason :'(
What a solid argument, I can't argue with that indeed.
"None of them loses quirk and they're birth with the quirk."
And so ? Besides you know that Knuckleduster also used to have a quirk before AFO stole it from him ? Well guess what : It didn't stop him from learning how to fight and being a quirkless vigilante so nope, you're just looking for excuses.
"Deku also train as crazy as them."
To learn how to use his quirks, not to compensate being a regular human like Stein or Nighteye does.
"Wtf bro, use your brain."
Funny you talk about brain, I was precisely about to ask you if you're having a stroke right now ? Because I can't decently believe anyone could write so much shit in a row without suffering from brain damage.
"Deku's struggle post-losing his quirk can be interpreted more as a narrative choice by the author"
Even if it was the case, that doesn't make Deku any less of a lazy ass bum. He lost OFA during the ellipse and immediately gave up on being a hero, until Bakugo came up with a solution Deku wouldn't have waited for if he was nearly as resilient and well-written as you think he is.
"Kohei Horikoshi, to explore themes of identity, resilience, and the essence of what makes a hero"
No argument here either, just random bs to hide the fact that you don't know how to refute my point.
"It's true that Deku relies on technology, but this can also be viewed as a form of adaptation and teamwork, core values in the manga. Didn't Tony Stark relied on his tech as well? What makes a hero? A quirk. No. A sense to help another person, to protect."
Lmao don't even try. Tony doesn't just sit on his ass and stop being a hero when he doesn't have his armor around him, whether in the comics or the movies (Iron-Man 3 is literally about that). It's even one of his most famous quotes in the MCU : "If you're nothing without this suit, then you shouldn't have it"
Well Deku at the end is nothing without his suit/OFA. It's not an opinion, it's not arguable. It's factual. He doesn't just rely on technology, he's entirely dependent of it. Without his suit, he just stand there without doing anything for years while looking passively at his friends living his dream.
"The eight-year time skip where Deku waits for technology to compensate for his lack of a quirk might be critiqued as a plot device to advance other stories or to give Deku a new form of heroism."
Except he does exactly the same thing as before but with an high-tech suit. If Deku really intended to seek for a new form of heroism, he would have declined the suit so no, "he seeks a new form of heroism" my ass.
"It's not necessarily about laziness but about finding a new way to be a hero when the conventional methods are no longer available to him."
Which is outright false as evidenced in my precedent point, just above.
"This development allows for exploration of his character beyond his physical abilities."
Is this development with us in the room ?
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/35376ba3cfcf5f2005ff8dd0ac5dae76/125c2b838a1afdf3-62/s540x810/73d41a5569f67917a24fadcb54fabf3f02295f20.jpg)
"Deku's growth in different aspects, like leadership"
He never showed at any point leadership skills, only teamwork at best but m'kay.
"strategy, and inspiration, rather than just physical prowess."
Inspiration isn't a hero skill. As for strategy, he didn't have any growth in this aspect either since again, he totally gave up being a hero for 8 years straight.
"In summary, while your addled and rude aspect of critique might view Deku's reliance on external help as a sign of laziness, it can also be seen as part of his character development arc"
On one side actual facts, on the other side your headcanons. Damn, I wonder which one carries more weight ?
"showcasing his adaptability, the importance of teamwork, and the broader message that heroism transcends physical power."
Watch out, you still have some bit left at the corner of your mouth.
"The series uses this plot to explore different facets of heroism, which is a central theme in mha."
The story didn't explore crap. Again at the moment Deku lost his quirk, he just stop doing shit for almost a decade despite having options to still be a hero. All the meatriding and headcanons in the world won't change the fact that Deku is fucking lazy and didn't grow up since Chapter 1 where here again, he never even tried to work out to compensate being quirkless and improve his chances to be admitted at UA.
"I'm done with MHA fans that only read and crop panel for their benefits and play the narrative to fit their imagination."
"Don't you never actually comprehend the material in your hands?"
Try at least to score one relevant argument before saying remarks like that, it's hard to take you seriously otherwise.
Well that was shit. Now sorry but if your next reply is as idiotic and dishonest as the previous ones, I will likely just block you. Given how low you set the bar, I won't waste more time and energy refuting your delusions.
You know, I think this ending would have been slightly less of a fucking disappointment if the heroes hadn't been so unfairly favored by Horikoshi compared to the villains. I mean, seriously
Deku destroys every bone in his body multiple times throughout the story and is warned that if he continues, he'll permanently lose the use of his limbs ? Everything's fine, his body's just got used to being reduced to a bloody pulp somehow so there's no consequences for him. In fact even when he literally loses his arms to Shigaraki, he gets them back two minutes later thanks to Eri because guess what ? Her horn still works even when cut off from her body. How convenient.
Gran Torino gets his ribcage obliterated by Shigaraki ? Don't worry guys, he'll survive that despite his old age and injuries, and this to have no particular role in the plot afterwards.
Bakugo dies heroically trying to buy time before Deku arrives ? Lmao, did you really believe it ?? No of course not, Edgeshot just uses his last-minute Deus Ex Machina to save his life at the cost of his own and- Oops nope he's fine too, my bad !
Hawks murders a criminal fleeing for his life in cold-blood ? The best Hori has to offer is him completely free and in charge of the HSPC.
And no, losing his quirk isn't a real consequence for him because not only it literally played a major part in saving the world with Vestige!Hawks raising an insurrection among AFO's quirks, but also because his quirk has always been the element through which people exploited him.
Endeavor abused his family for years and completely destroyed his eldest son ? No jail time and no media backlash for that, the only blame he received was due to the heroes' failure to stop the League during the Raid Arc.
And don't even get me started on this bs about facing hell or whatever for what he's done : He's literally free and wealthy ; he has Rei, Fuyumi, Shoto, his sidekicks and Hawks on his side ; and all the difficulties he's apparently going to suffer are off-screened.
Deku had to sacrifice OFA and his future hero career to save the world ? Guess what, Bakugo invested all his time and money to make him an Iron-Man suit and now he can still be a hero with everyone else.
There are plenty more examples of this but I think you get the idea. Now let's take a look at the villains' ending :
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/8f53c7c567780b38ab4227f4ea557986/fd6b5a81a896509f-83/s540x810/a3c46e37641b8a34dc7a20dbf706d3219dabb5fb.jpg)
Toya is now a piece of charcoal kept artificially alive for the few years he has left, unable to move a finger, and whose few minutes a day during which he can stay awake will be spent talking to his father who abused him as a child.
Toga, a literal teenager, killed herself to save Ochako and because she knew it's still better than rotting at Tartarus her whole life.
And not only did she die but she did by bleding to death. Let me repeat for those who have trouble grasping what I've just said : In a manga where the heroes can survive having their heart blown to bits, being impaled Kakyoin-style or smashed against buildings like a fly on a windshield, one of the main antagonists died of a fucking hemorrhage…
As for Shigaraki, after learning that his very birth and all the tragedies of his life have been orchestrated by AFO, after all this development and narrative promises about him being saved in the end... Deku just kills him.
Because despite all his speeches about saving him, it seems like the best our MC could do was beating him both physically and mentally until he crumbles to dust…
Compress on his side is apparently locked up for life and kept alive by machines too.
A begging Kurogiri tried in a desperate attempt to save Shigaraki, only to be unceremoniously blown up by Bakugo and dying off-screen without anyone giving a shit, including Aizawa and Mic.
And Spinner will now spend the rest of his life struggling with the extra quirks inside him that affect his body and mind, while having to cope with the thought that his boyfriend best friend and companions have either died alone or are locked away for life in horrifying circumstances.
Clearly not the same as with the heroes...
Now don't get me wrong, even if they suffered just as much from the consequences of their actions or the plot as the League, this ending would still be a disaster in terms of writing but AT LEAST it wouldn't reek that much of hypocrisy.

Compassionate Questioning: A Gentle Push for Antis to Touch Some Grass
By….Human Assistant?? 💁🏽♀️🤠
💁🏽♀️: Shhhh 🤫 Crushbot is sleeping 🤖😴
Let’s be real—bad-faith critics aren’t interested in genuine debate. No matter how well you explain something, they’re not really listening. Their goal isn’t understanding, it’s winning. But after chatting with a psychologist friend of mine, I’ve started reshaping how I approach these interactions.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/344156e0a6a1303d19bd9b2bafb57aba/5a8cf70077ca68a4-49/s540x810/7f2c7c4fa7f509062ca04dba6e8eb32c849b50dc.jpg)
So, what if, instead of banging our heads against the wall, we tried two different things?
1. Recognize when someone isn’t actually interested in conversation and stop wasting our breath.
2. Use some empathetic questioning to get them to focus on the real issue: their borderline obsessive hatred of a cartoon about gay demon furries.
Because let’s be honest—most of these arguments aren’t about Helluva Boss itself. They’re about discomfort with its themes, biases against certain character types, or straight-up projection. So let’s break down some common criticisms and respond with some therapist-style questioning to (gently) expose what’s really going on.
1. “Stolas is just an ‘uwu boy’ to excuse his toxic behavior.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a44de3a4896711d3d1c92c97e3abe60b/5a8cf70077ca68a4-9c/s540x810/fb239e5e504fdaf382c4c2fb3b2a6c9d1bb27271.jpg)
💁🏽♀️: “That’s an interesting take! What makes you feel that his vulnerability is being used as an excuse rather than a character trait? Do you think a character can be both flawed and emotionally complex?”
Translation: Are you mad that Stolas has emotions, or are you mad that people like him despite his flaws?
A lot of people act like a sympathetic portrayal = automatic forgiveness, but that’s just not how storytelling works. Maybe the issue isn’t that the show “excuses” Stolas, but that it refuses to dehumanize him for making bad choices.
2. “Blitz doesn’t deserve a redemption arc, he’s awful to everyone.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/f3f045ee680eb5240d0d1a24a29daf14/5a8cf70077ca68a4-bd/s540x810/511b1e86d941a8b1f3396c0bb589f204c28af916.jpg)
💁🏽♀️: “What does ‘deserve’ mean to you in this context? Do you think redemption arcs are only for characters who are already likable? If so, how do you feel about villains who get redemption arcs in other media?”
Translation: Are you this mad when other messy, morally gray characters get growth, or is it just Blitz?
People say they want complex characters but balk when those characters aren’t immediately lovable. A redemption arc isn’t about excusing past behavior—it’s about showing how someone changes.
3. “The show focuses too much on romance instead of being a fun comedy.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/bea81b5a5bc7bdcfbe9947240efed346/5a8cf70077ca68a4-94/s540x810/e851d0fad7c97bb8095d9311f70a19eae233b490.jpg)
💁🏽♀️: “That’s fair! Expectations shape how we experience a show. Do you think the issue is that romance exists, or that it’s not executed the way you personally prefer? How do you feel about comedies that mix romance with drama?”
Translation: Is the problem the existence of romance, or that you don’t like the way this show does it?
Helluva Boss has always been planting seeds of character-driven drama. Expecting it to stay a gag-a-minute comedy was bound to leave you disappointed.
4. “Loona has no real character development—she’s just a bitch who yells a lot.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b124aba108ef25866ec299fe515cc98c/5a8cf70077ca68a4-9a/s540x810/31780214280ec3ba4a253a00f3329fd55c843c7e.jpg)
💁🏽♀️: “That’s interesting! What does meaningful character development look like to you? Do you think male characters with similar traits get the same criticism, or do they get more leeway?”
Translation: Why is Loona the problem, but not Blitz, Mammon, or literally any other loud, abrasive character in the show?
This critique isn’t new—it’s the same double standard that follows female characters in Helluva Boss in general. People say the female cast is either “too weak” (Octavia, Verosika) or “too aggressive” (Loona, Stella), but the moment a woman gets actual nuance (Octavia, anyone?) suddenly it’s “bad writing.” Maybe the issue isn’t the writing—maybe some people just don’t like female characters unless they fit a narrow, palatable mold.
5. “Fizz got retconned into a useless twink. He used to be cool.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a49807c41aacc77ca535c23c0573b2ab/5a8cf70077ca68a4-03/s540x810/ec5d6f4d59b0990681e150a5d7f17b72f79f9b20.jpg)
💁🏽♀️: “What specifically makes you feel that Fizz’s character was ‘retconned’? Do you think your perception of him in Season 1 was fully accurate, or just based on limited information? Do you believe a character needs to be physically strong to be compelling?”
Translation: Why do you feel personally betrayed that Fizz turned out to be… a disabled theater kid?
The real issue here is that people projected a completely different personality onto Fizz based on his Ozzie’s cameo and then got mad when the show revealed that, shocker, he’s a whole person with vulnerabilities. The funniest part? A lot of these complaints come from people who claim to be “progressive” yet have no problem calling a visibly disabled character a “useless twink” the moment he stops being an edgelord in their heads.
6. “This show is garbage and Viv is a terrible writer.”
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/277dced88a6d070c7149228a31f92299/5a8cf70077ca68a4-43/s540x810/24cf9feb646e5a37adb9d3ca2ee6f34b8635725a.jpg)
💁🏽♀️: “That’s a strong reaction! What keeps you so invested in something you dislike? Do you think this much frustration over a cartoon is a productive use of your time and energy? Would you feel happier focusing on something you actually enjoy?”
Translation: Babe, why are you still here?
This is where a lot of anti-Helluva Boss people need to take a step back. If you genuinely think a show is that awful, why not just… move on? If you’ve made hating it part of your personality, that’s not media critique—that’s weirdly personal. Maybe the issue isn’t the show, but the fact that you’ve sunk so much time into something you refuse to let go of.
Final Thoughts: Don’t Fight—Redirect
The key here isn’t to get into an endless argument with people who refuse to engage. It’s to either:
1. Get them to reflect on what they’re actually mad about.
2. Make it painfully obvious to onlookers that their argument is weak and rooted in bias.
So next time you see someone foaming at the mouth about Helluva Boss, try hitting them with some gentle, leading questions. Either they start thinking critically, or they spiral into incoherence. Either way, you win.

slow horses timeline stuff
because i'm procrastinating doing work.
disclaimer: this is all for show timeline & show canon. the books are their own thing and have a different timeline. this is show only.
FORMAT: dates we know // how we know it
the show:
s1- likely february 2016 // february: struan's line "it's february!" when louisa suggests christmas drinks. 2016: estimate based off of time of s2
s2- 2016 // min's plaque reads 2016
s3- 2017 // between s2 and s4. also, spider flosses. ergo 2017.
s4- early january 2018 // early january: right after christmas (roddy's mishap with the christmas party, christmas decorations still up). 2018: catherine's calendar in her flat is on january 2018.
backstory things:
bad sam gets isobel from les arbres- "early nineties" // via giti's dialogue. i will circle back to this
charles partner's death- 1996 // partner's plaque has 1996 as death date at the end of s2
rose's (river's grandmother's) death- 2010 // her gravestone in s4
stansted- july/summer 2015 // 8 months pre s1
timeline errors / things that bother me:
river's age- so, you have two options here. option one, via dialogue: we take giti's "bad sam only went to france once in the early nineties" as truth. therefore sam gets a pregnant isobel out of les arbres in the early nineties (let's say 1990/1991, but you can place it anywhere in the early nineties you like). then river is born a few months later (judging by the fact that isobel was already starting to show when sam picked her up). so river's birth date: 1991? or some other point in the early nineties.
option two, via props: river says his mother left him postcards for his "seventh, eighth, and ninth birthdays". one of said cards has the date 1994 written on it (can be seen in the scene where he's looking at them in the shoebox). if we assume that's the one for his seventh birthday, that puts him being born around 1987.
the difference between these doesn't matter that much (it's the difference of him being 27 in s4 vs 31 in s4), except for how it shifts river's relation to other events-- e.g., option one says he'll be left with david and rose around 1997 (or maybe a few years later if you put his birth date in 1992/93, since "early nineties" is vague), AFTER partner's death. vs theory two puts him being left with his grandparents in 1993, solidly before partner is killed. i do think it's interesting to consider whether david already had a cute little blonde boy doting on him at home when he was planning charles' assassination or not. so depending on which river-age theory you choose to follow, river's relation to other backstory events may change (or you could always just do the old "river's age is nebulous and he is however old i need him to be for this specific fic i'm writing" thing lol).
it also means he was sososo young in s1 if you follow theory #1. him being born in 1991 would mean he would be like 23/24 when stansted happened 🥺🥺🥺 BABYYYY. an actual INFANT. (theory 2 would have him at 27/28 during stansted).
characters headstones say they're too young to make sense- partner and rose- partner's plaque says his birth date is 1948... and so if he died in 1996... he would have been 48 years old when he died................. i'm sorry but this man is NOT under fifty. the actor they cast to play him in the flashbacks is like 75 lmfao. i think this is just an error-- him being 48 when he died would make him more of a contemporary with lamb (who would have been in his 40s at partner's death) rather than with david (and considering lamb kinda came up under partner's wing-- at least from the books, but that's the vibe i get from the show too-- i think partner should be at least a decade or so older than lamb). it would also make him like 20 years younger than david (who'd be in his 60s when partner died). i just don't think it makes sense. i would bump his birth date back to 1938 or maybe even 1928, to make him more of a contemporary with david (who was born sometime in the 30s, since louisa says he's 80-something in s4(2018)).
as for rose, her headstone in s4 says 1953-2010. that 1953 date is suspect to me. we know david is 80-something in s4. let's take him to be the youngest possible to give ourselves the greatest margin of error. then he'd be born in 1938. now let's follow theory 1 of river's age (again providing the kindest possible interpretation to rose's age), making him born around 1991. assuming isobel was around 20 when she had river, this means she would be born in ~1971. which would make rose... 18. when she had isobel. which would be fine, except that in 1971 david would be... 33. hmmmmmm.
and remember this is the kindest POSSIBLE interpretation, assuming david is the youngest possible (just barely 80 in s4) and that river is also the youngest possible (born 1991). if you interpret either or both of them as older than that, then isobel's birth shifts earlier and/or david's age shits older, making david and rose's age gap at her birth even more suspect. for example taking river's birth date in 1987 (a la theory 2) would make rose only 14 when isobel would have to be born (assuming isobel was 20ish when she had river). i mean, it's POSSIBLE this was an intentional implication that rose and david had a skeevy age gap? but i doubt it. considering they were trying to claim that the 75 year old james faulkner was playing a 48 year old charles partner in the flashback, and river's age is already an ambiguous mess, i'm more inclined to say that this was just a mistake. i would just bump rose's birth date to be 1943 instead-- still younger than david (who was born sometime in the 30s), but not, uh. illegally so.
fwiw, i think a lot of these timeline errors come from the confusing detail that while the show is AIRING in the early 2020s, its SET in the late 2010s. so like, river's birth date for example, i think they wanted him to be 31ish in s4, and someone correctly subtracted that from 2018 for the postcards (2018-31 = 1987, so river's 7th birthday would be 1987+7=1994). meanwhile, for the dialogue, someone else accidentally subtracted it from modern day instead (2024-31= 1993, so sam fetching pregnant-isobel from les arbres would be just before that in "the early nineties"). partner's age error i also think comes from subtracting from the modern day when s2 was airing (2022-74=1948) without accounting for the fact that the 75 year old man we're seeing as him is meant to be that old in 1996, not in the modern day (because he's only seen in flashbacks).
and also a lot of this comes from the fact that these are all "flashes-on-screen-for-one-second" props and brief lines of dialogue, and they didn't expect someone to care enough to come along and try to do the math.
but too bad! i'm here! i want to do the math!
my personal interpretation of character ages:
some based on textual evidence, others just estimating based on actors' ages. in general, take what you like and ignore what doesn't work. the timelines are already fuzzy enough that you can fudge it in any direction you like haha, just use whatever works best for your current fic/project. but here are my takes:
river- born 1987/1991 (both interpretations are equally valid imo). makes him either 29-31 or 25-27 for the run of the show.
louisa- mid 30s likely? mostly going by rosalind eleazar's age.
catherine- late 50s/early 60s (going by saskia reeves' age, and also would make her late 30s/early 40s when partner died, which sounds right [& is consistent with the book, though that doesn't count for much imo since the book and show are such divergent things timeline-wise])
lamb- early-mid 60s (gary oldman's age, and him being a contemporary of catherine seems right)
roddy- early/mid 30s?
shirley- early 30s, marcus- late 30s (an inversion of their actors' ages, but necessary because marcus says in the show he's 5 years older than shirley)
min- mid 40s
(i do love that no matter how you slice it, river is def the baby of the slough house family haha. that feels right. oh EXCEPT maybe sid!!)
sid- probably young like river, late 20s/early 30s.
david- 80ish. i'd put him at 81-83 throughout the run of the show (birth date 1935ish), but you could go younger and say 79-81 or something like that. importantly of a different and older cohort than lamb/catherine/sam etc.
partner- fuck it i'm going against the plaque let's say he's born 1928, would put him at age 68 when he died in 1996. more consistent with the actor's age, and puts him solidly as a contemporary of david, NOT of lamb. plus the way catherine talks about him like a sweet old man it makes more sense for there to be more of an age gap between her and partner. so say he was 68 when he died in 1996, meanwhile david was 61, lamb would be mid 40s and catherine would be ~40. that seems right to me.
if david was born in 1935 i'll put rose at 1943. would make her late 20s when isobel is born, late 40s when river is born, 67 at her death (and river would be 19/23 at her death btw depending on which river age theory you subscribe to, in case that's helpful for angst/backstory reasons)
idk everyone else can just be the age of their actors i guess, but if you're writing stuff in the past remember to subtract correctly from the late 2010s not the early 2020s!! or i mean don't. it doesn't really matter. none of this actually matters lol
anyway. whew. that was a lot. sorry i just spat a million words about pointless timeline shenanigans all over you. i do this for fun.
(pspspspsps slow horses creative team let me proofread your timeline math i'll do it for free this is fun for me pspspspsps)
#uhhhh sorry guys i went a lil nuts with this#i luv u timelines <3#this is what i do for fun aslkjdsfj#slow horses#if there's anything i missed lmk!! i'd be happy to add it

And Another Thing...
Because actually, the more I think about it, the more it just pisses me off...
If The main writer wanted this to just be a simple formulaic "magical girl powa" kids show that sells merch. With no overarching story plot.
MLB could've just simply BEEN that. A cutesy Sailor Moon inspired story!
MLB could've just BEEN an all female superhero team with Marinette as leader, Alya second in command, and Chloe and/or Kagami being her love rivals/friends for Adrien's affections.
And Adrien could literally just BE THE DAMN LUKEWARM LOVE INTEREST that she wins in the end. Because the Deuteragonist of this show, sure as shit ain't been him since at least S4, let's be so for real.
Nothing against Alya, I love her, but girlfriend has overshadowed what used to be Adrien's role.
But in this version of MLB, being an all girl team of superheroes with a secret identity. Marinette's absurd 'whacky' antics in this show could easily be ignored/deflected/handwaved away, if we never knew much about Adrien outside of him being a popular, good looking rich kid, whom Marinette crushes on and daydreams about often.
And TA doesn't have to twist himself into a pretzel to defend his poor writing choices, when the only POV that matters is Marinette's.
There would be no need for the lore, or vaguely changing it when he feels like it. Or worrying about the unnecessary drama of the whole 'they can't know each others identities' main plot that has all become meaningless.
The original main plot of the whole secret identities for romantic drama and the reason many of us were drawn to this show to BEGIN WITH, is moot when the writer constantly refuses to do ANYTHING with the setup he writes for himself.
He won't let none of his characters have any real development and growth and only seems to care about ONE-HALF of the original two man team.
And I'm over it. 4 episodes and a lame ass Special that literally excuses the main heroine's reasons for LYING to her One True Love has shown me this show is NOT interested in doing anything beyond what it's given.
All of us invested or holding your breath for any real progress with the romantic/main subplot are going to be waiting for naught.
I was already convinced but now I'm certain:
There will never be a big reveal. And if there is one, it'll be purposely left to the VERY end of the series. And it won't even be satisfying.
Nothing will EVER be done with the Lie. Why should it? Marinette finally has the boy she wants, and even if it ever got addressed, the writer would handle it in the most contrived way possible that somehow excuses Marinette's decision anyway.
How much you wanna bet, he'll just end up retconning his own story to SOMEHOW scapegoat Marinette's bullshit to be Lila's fault?
Or Chloe's? Because even when she's not around, not in the same school, city, or even country, the writer STILL finds a way to hate on Chloe.
No...wait even better! Adrien finally finds out and to avoid allowing Marinette to own up to her fucking mistake/betrayal of trust, she decides to 'sacrifice' her memories and being Ladybug...and oh my fucking god.
......This is why TA had Marinette entrust Alya as the new leader isn't it? He thinks he's so goddamn clever!
Marinette's gonna fuck up big time in this season and then get temporary or semi-permanent amnesia to forget EVERYTHING to avoid owning up to her mistakes?
And instead of people seeing the manipulative writing to handwave away how she's been very selfish and self-centered, and her need to control everything. People are going to praise TA for believing or redeeming her bad decisions/behavior on how much she was finally willing to 'sacrifice' herself for a change for Adrien.
*groans*....god this sounds even worse.
You know what, this post had a point and I spiraled again.
Oh yeah...MLB should've just been another inspired typical 5 teamed magical girl knock off because hoping the writer does anything worthwhile with his Deuteragonist, is just waiting for Levithan to reveal itself from the deep, dank, ocean depths, and in this timeline the world's in rn, that's actually more plausible than hoping for meaningful character arcs after 6 seasons of MLB...
#ml writing critical#mlb salt#ml salt#mlb critical#marinette salt#i want to be wrong#but i never am#and that just makes this worse

The Draco in the books is such a pathetic wet loser and it's a part of his charm. Inside he was a sensible person, much more gentle than some of the boys Myrtle met (Moaning Myrtle said it not me). He's comfortable with showing his emotions (unlike Harry who view them as weakness).
He's not graceful/elegant or unreadable at all. He's tripping on his feet (Madam Malkin, 6 book), flushing easily (Harry denied his friendship which might be the first time someone denied him something), and not the best at having rational speech especially under the pressure (6th book with Dumbledore).
In fact he wears his heart on his sleeves so much that Harry can anticipate what Draco would say and think and do (Harry always keeps an eye on him to avoid him).
But he still remains a sarcastic bully who's got the same humour as Ron (Harry loves it) and with the ideas that he comes up with (Potter stink badges, Wesley is our king...) he sure does have at least three monkeys giving him unhinged ideas.
it is a crime to write draco malfoy as anything other than a little shit and im on my way to arrest your fool ass
#he can be mature and composed and tactful on the outside as long as theres an army of monkeys going ape on the cymbals inside his head#youre telling me hes looking at harry potter and NOT twitching with the urge to do something completely unhinged#dont be ridiculous#if ur not going to be serious about him i want my money back#He's a wet dog and Harry a wet cat#they are perfect#Canon Draco is such and interesting character#he's an asshole#until 6th book#where Harry caught him crying#caught him being human#and it affected so much that instead of viewing Draco with hatred#he looked at him with pity#and understood that he didn't know everything about Draco as he thought#I wished there were more fics where Draco also realised that Harry is not just a string hero#he's a vulnerable boy#insecure and easily hurt#maybe I should write it#I need to finish my other fics so#but might as well keep this Idea in mind for when I have the time

as someone who has used a cane for over 2 years now ive noticed a really interesting bias against canes by able bodied people in comparison to other mobility aids. when we were at the same college my roommate used forearm crutches and i had my cane, and it became a joke to us how much more helpful and accommodating people were towards him (of course still overall bad- but better). the main example we always talk about is that people would fall over themselves to help him with doors, even to the point that it would get inconvenient (like trying to open the door to the accessible bathroom for him but in the process standing in the bathroom), meanwhile people would let doors shut on me without batting an eye. he started using a cane recently so i asked him about if there was a difference in how people treated him and he said there was a noticable difference and that people were less eager to help him when he was using it in comparison to the crutches. i have a few theories as to why:
1. most canes you see in media being used by someone who isnt elderly are aesthetic canes, and so people dont take it as seriously if a younger person is using one
2. unlike a lot of mobility aids, canes are one handed, which gives the illusion of an extra hand free. what people dont understand is that yes, while i do have an extra hand free, i am using that hand double time since the other one is occupied. also a lot of things require two hands (especially for someone with a disability) so doing everything one handed can be tough. i use my dominant hand to hold my cane since my pain is worse on my left side, which means that the hand i do have free isnt one i can use to type things in or write, so if i need to do that i have to put my cane under my arm and use my right hand
3. canes are taken less seriously as mobility aids since to an able bodied person they dont look as severe, which gives the impression that cane users are more capable than other mobility aid users. while yes, it is true that canes can be a starter mobility aid that will eventually be traded for another type as symptoms progress, that doesnt mean that canes are for Disability Lite. me and my roommate used our mobility aids for similar reasons and have had very similar pain experiences, we just used different aids. canes are also a significantly cheaper option compared to other aids and are easier to find in stores, and so are much more accessible. besides all that though, there shouldnt even be a bar for how disabled a person needs to be to recieve help, which id argue is a very controversial opinion to have anymore
4. canes are still a joke. they are still widely used as a funny prop to indicate that someone is old, incapable and feeble. even on tumblr i still see people utilizing canes in this way in artwork and memes, and thats obviously very alienating. mobility canes arent props, and you probably should not draw someone with one unless you actually intend to have that character need it
in my short 2 years of using a cane i have already faced so much ableism, most of which has come from young left leaning people. of course theres a wider issue of disabled people being the odd group out in the effort to stop bigotry since literally everyone will punch down on us. there are also certainly privileges to using a cane compared to other mobility aids. but its also incredibly strange how invisible they are, like people forget that i have one for a reason
#anyways shout out dark phasmagoria ☆ sepulchral gloom for helping me get around <3#hair scares#cane user#disability

officially finished kcd 2 so now im gonna complete the younger hans and henry meeting fic and some art wips i have because my brain is overtaken by this game HOLY FUCK
(spoilers under cut but its just my rambling mentioning the ending and some plottwists really)
ive been a hansry truther since the first game in the sense that henry is sooo clearly a bisexual loser and so is hans. imo the two most logical choices for henry's romance are hans and theresa, who, in each of the games they're romancable in are the ones who henry has known and trusted longest. theresa in KCD 1 is his childhood friend, the one person who shares his survivors guilt and the memories of skalitz. while in KCD 2 hans is the one person who has been with henry throughout this whole thing and never really left his side (excluding the arguement at the start and the various kidnappings and being taken hostage)
like either way imo those are the most 'cannon' romances to henry and i really wish kcd 2 adressed the existence of theresa a bit. she's by far the most interesting woman in the franchise since warhorse does lowkey struggle to write women in a way that's logical. i mean the way every female around henry throws herself at him except his main LI's who all follow some version of the girlboss trope is... man come on. i actually do really like both rosa and katherine, but i think there could've been just a teensy bit more done with them
also like what the fuck is up with henry's mother. idk if her name or any personality being excluded is meant to be an artistic choice to show how henry remembers her as just 'mom' and ignores any other part of her character but like wtf. both radzig and martin get names, a backstory and a deep relationship with henry while his mother is just. there. i get that this is the 15th century but in the first game it's clear in the tutorial that hal and his mom are CLOSE like i wish we got to see a bit more of that tbh
i have words to say about samuel as a character but none of them are appropriate for tumblr so i will abstain. tldr i actually like him a lot henry getting a brother-butnotreally is actually really sweet. like despite the fact that he lost his family and everything dear to him there is still someone who cares about him in a familial way. i hope we'll het to see more of him in some of the upcoming dlcs although i doubt it since he can technically die during the game (and i'm pretty sure in a canon run you should leave him behind)
okay last point to the characters is one ive had since kcd 1 but THE NAMESSS WHY ARE THEY NAMED THATTT
henry of skalitz my ass bro THAT'S JINDRA 😭😭 jindříšek even!! like i get that ř may have been an issue but just have him be jindra instead of jindřich then???
hans capon is just a bit silly like jan ptáček could be a pronouncable name, not to mention there is SO many characters named jan already so even Jan Capon i could lowkey get behind more
also i do fully believe non czech speakers miss out on the game a bit, there are parts of bg dialogue that are in czech and add just a bit of humour and immersion to the game (like in taverns, markets or during henry's nightmare in suchdol where the skalitz/maleshov people hiss 'you killed us')
okay ttldr this game is really good i just needed to yap since my friends whove finished it dont share any of my sentiments
if u have thoughts to share please do im curious what impression others got

However, I don't think that Ace and Jack are "traumatized" or carry a lot of baggage compared to the other cast.
Ace comes off like the "everyman" trope to a tee. He has a good homelife and has no real drama going on his life. His problems are ones that anyone can have. Jack is like this as well, since he doesn't have a dark backstory like the other boys either.
This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Not every character needs a traumatic past.
Although, I think Ace could've been handled a lot better, since he doesn't have much going for him as a character. I swear you can write him and Deuce out of the story, and nothing much would be lost.
Even Jack could be a lot more interesting if the game showcased him more and dove more into his relationship with Vil. He could've been like a Trey figure in Vil's arc, except he has a connection with both Epel and Vil, making the situation even more messy, and help out during Vil's overblot.
Having said that, I totally agree with what you said about most of the TWST boys having trauma in a general sense, and wanting the game to dive into them more. Hell, I wish the game gave Ace a bit more dimension and background. Yes, he got the whole "I feel insignificant compared to everyone else" in the last update, but that was almost resolved as soon as it was introduced as a character conflict for him, making it feel unsatisfying and unearned. The game undermined that whole thing by making him uber special and powerful after all with his UM being like an overpowered version of Ace's. Considering the game rarely every dives into these boy's backgrounds once their arcs are done, I think that's the end of it and that's all there is gonna be to Ace. Which is ashamed. Because he and Jack have so much more potential if the game actually fleshed them out more, especially Jack.
What I said: “Everyone in this game has trauma or personal struggles and it's NOT a competition of who has it worse.”
Ace and Jack are not really traumatized. For that matter, neither is Rook, but they DO have personal struggles. Personal struggles does not necessarily mean baggage, but everyone has things that they struggle with.
For Ace’s “I feel insignificant compared to everyone else”, I got the feeling they were setting that up for a while. Ace does this weird thing of deciding to mess with Grim and the player early in the game and we know he bullies Deuce. Now, he could just be being a jerk and arrogant, but why did he decide to pick on Grim and the player, who were janitors, not yet students? The novelization about the Rose-Red Tyrant explains he didn’t like the idea that Yuu got special treatment while he had to work to get into the school.
The idea that Grim and Yuu had gotten into NRC without any work apparently bothered him enough to instigate him being a bully. However, I don't buy Ace's excuse.
Grim and Yuu weren't students. Ace earlier was picking on them for being janitors and not getting in. That to me had read as Ace has been considered special for a while because he had strong magic and he was now struggling with not being as special as he thought.
According to the novelization, about 10 percent of the population has magic, but among that 10 percent it's rare to have the level of magic required to get into Night Raven College. So Ace was likely treated as really special, but once he got into one of the top magic schools, he realized he wasn't the top person anymore and it bothered him. At the Orientation, the new students had it confirmed that Malleus Draconia attended the school. Malleus is considered the strongest student at school because he is one of the top 5 mages in the world and Ace's own housewarden, Riddle, is only a month older than Ace.
Many bullies bully others because they are: insecure themselves, want to have to power, have been bullied, or learned it. It did not feel like Ace's bullying was learned behavior or that he had been bullied, but either he wanted to establish himself as the most powerful one of his friends or he's insecure. When we see Book 5, seeing Deuce get his Unique Magic before him, really bothered Ace. That's what sealed for me that Ace has personal insecurity he's trying to hide.
For Jack, he tries to act as a tough guy. Most people who do that? They've been hurt. It's often a defense mechanism. 'I'm going to act like I don't need anyone, because it scares people off from using or taking advantage of me and if I don't need anyone it won't hurt as much when people reject me.'
We don't know much of how Jack got along with other kids. But we do see in Book 5, he came to help Vil against bullies and the bullies ran from Jack. As a student at NRC, Jack tends to push away people, but his longing for companionship still leaks out. He's kind and he cares, but he hides it under his 'I don't need anyone dragging me down' schtick. That feels like someone who longs to make friends and have connection, but doesn't particularly feel safe doing so.
As for Rook, we don't know his story much either. We know he has many siblings, so maybe theater was his was of differentiating himself. We don't know. But he does carry some stuff in Book 6 because Vil says Rook is very perceptive, and yet Rook could not see Vil's struggle. That bothers him.
I'm not saying everyone is traumatized. But I did say IT'S NOT A COMPETITION ON WHO HAS IT WORSE. Everyone in the world has their own personal struggles. A person who comes from a good homelife can have personal struggles that affect them greatly, even though they aren't as dark as assassination attempt or extreme poverty. That's doesn't make them being struggles for that person less valid.
They still affect that person and undermining it because "Well, it's not trauma." is so callous to me. Maybe it's not a struggle to you, but you don't know how someone else handles things.
When I was a little kid, I had a classmate who would break down because they couldn't finish our math sheets in the set amount of time when we did timed math sheets. It's not something someone would describe as traumatic, but it still really upsetting to that person and affected them to the point they were sobbing and hyperventilating.
Several students, including me, and our teacher would talk to them, trying to help them calm down because not finishing a math sheet is not the end of the world in the grand scheme of life. They were okay. They didn't get physically hurt, but they were terrified about it. Why? I don't know. I never asked. I just knew that it made them upset and me and my classmates didn't want to see our classmate that upset because we felt so worried about them.
And guess what? That event that happened over 20 years ago for me? It still affects me to this day because when someone is upset to the point they are in tears, I go over to do what I can to try and help, just like I did as a little kid, because I can't help but worry when I see people in extreme distress.
It doesn't matter if it's "traumatic". What matters is the personal struggle that person is going through is real and it affects them.

I thought it'd be good fun if I did a list like this for Smith and Neo, so I took one that looked interesting and this happened. Happy reading.
1. When did you start shipping them?
I first watched The Matrix somewhere around May or April of 2023. I didn't ship them on my initial watch through of the Matrix... It was just more of a gradual like for them as a pairing. I think I started concretely liking them around August 2023? In fact, the first ever ship related art I drew for the Matrix was Morpheus and Neo, and my first ship fic was quite literally *Merovingian* and Neo!
2. What do you like about them as individuals?
I'm surprised to say that what I love most about Neo isn't even actually his looks or his personality (even though I like these parts of him too) but rather what he represents. He's a second chance, freedom personified.
Though he was indeed a puppet in the end, I loved what he built for himself even as he was stuck to his role, how calm and collected he can be. He really is elegant, svelte, but that doesn't mean he's blank or wooden — It makes me smile that sometimes classic "90s badass hero" speech leaks through, like "Hiya fellas".
As for Smith, I initially only found his writing interesting. I cannot say I am attracted to Hugo Weaving. Gradually I understood his character more and more and found that I really can relate to him. Actually, people often call the Matrix movies a trans metaphor, and I feel like this metaphor for self discovery and struggle with the world can actually be found most in Smith?
Of course I'm not saying I think his character is trans, just that his problems really felt like mine. I like that he's such a lonely character in perfect parallel to how popular Neo is, I like that he is the perfect personification of bigotry because people hate what they do not understand because they are crucially scared of it just the way Smith is terrified.
He reminds me of a child grappling tearfully at things he just can't understand, because he simply has a mental blockade to these things because he was made and bred and raised in a totally different purpose and world than that of Neo's.
3. What about their dynamic appeals to you?
Actually, I often see others say their appeal is in Smith and Neo as the classic enemies to lovers troupe. I admit a lot of my favourite ships fall under this too, but I've always viewed Smith and Neo's story as one of redemption and one of a second chance.
Smith represents somebody who doesn't fit into society, suddenly finding himself ripped away from the comfort of conformity, even when he was made specifically for that. He hates everything that he perceives, because to him they are mentally and physically vile. He craves the comfort of belonging.
And when he is totally thrown and discarded from the system, instead of changing himself the way Neo does for his own freedom and peace of mind, he foolishly deigns to change his cage, to hijack The Matrix.
He struggles, and in this struggle I find sympathy with his character. Neo on the other hand is Smith's saviour, as is his entire character as the saviour of the human race, but I like to think he can save other races too, even when Smith is to me the most human of the two.
This is important: Neo is the ONLY one in the whole world who can possibly understand Smith's anguish. Inexorably they are linked not just through fate but also by choice. They need each other, they love each other, they hate each other, and all these things surmount to such importance it cannot not be mentioned in tandem with the names of Smith and Neo.
They are together in life and in death. Neo is the only one who can soothe Smith's fears, and it is Smith's own refusal to accept that Neo understands that dooms him. They matter more to each other than anybody else. The Matrix is a love story—but not between the characters of Neo and Trinity.
4. What are their favourite things about one another?
This is a hard question to answer, considering Smith and Neo aren't just some regular pairing.
I can't decide if Neo's favourite thing about Smith would be his machine side or his humanity. Would he enjoy that Smith is a program, because it shows him the whole new world he didn't know of, of programs who love just like Rama Kandra told him, or would he enjoy that Smith is so human in his emotions and his inner conflict and find it beautiful in a creature meant to be incapable of them?
Would he love that Smith can access these emotions, that Smith chose to access these emotions, that it means he can love and hate Neo so deeply and so subconsciously and so truthfully?
Either way, Neo's favourite thing about Smith would definitely be his character. I think speaking on terms of by the end of Revolutions, he'd like to watch Smith struggle, because it shows Smith is trying, Smith is alive. But he would not like Smith's pain, or his fear.
And how about Smith's favourite thing about Neo.... Hmm, I don't know! I thought maybe "his capacity to understand Smith" would be a good answer, but Smith's just scared of that as proven by his reaction at the end of Rev.
I think I'll still have to keep that as my answer though, but with some notes, that Smith would come to love this part of Neo, that he is the ONLY ONE for Smith, but only with time and only by learning this very very slowly. In the end, what he likes (or maybe more accurately, what part of Neo successfully attracts the most of Smith's attention whether positive or negative) most about Neo is that he *is* Neo.
He's human in all the worst ways, he's relentless, he's able to learn his own mistakes, he's able to rise above conflict, he's able to accept Smith as his death, that Neo believes in love so fiercely that he'd throw the world away for said love.
5. How do you envision them getting together?
I don't think there's such a thing as "dating" or "talking phases" for these two. It's more of a natural, unspoken thing. From the start they've "gotten together" after all, they're stuck to each other from beginning to end!
Technically they've been "dating" since conception, even. To be honest, I have never once agreed with any portrayal of Smith or Neo confessing to each other, because they understand each other so innately that none of it even has to be said. It comes to them like breathing, their love for each other.
Maybe if I had to picture it, Smith would be the first to explicitly say something like "I love you" years into the future after Revolutions (this is following the theory that Smith and Neo become tutelary saints after Rev), but only just to say what they've already known, and what they've frankly already said a thousand times with their eyes or their actions, just to set it all into concrete, to acknowledge this in a healthy way because Smith would definitely become a changed man after everything.
By then, Neo wouldn't have any reaction to it, he'd probably just reply "I know", and they'd continue on as normal.
6. What would their dream home look like?
7. How do they split up the housework and chores?
Going to skip both these questions because by the way they operate, neither Smith nor Neo would require anything like a house. But whenever I imagine them in any kind of living quarters I surprisingly imagine either the mail building where Mouse was killed and Morpheus got captured, or in The Merovingian's chateau (thanks to this old RPG on LJ). Though I do think Room 303 would be a place of significance to them both.
About question 7, I don't even need to elaborate on why I can't even answer this one.
8. What are their love languages, and how do they show their affection?
If we're talking about affection the way a regular couple would show it like buying flowers or a peck on the cheek or holding hands—thats just a big fat MAYBE for this pairing, and probably only YEARS after Revolutions with a lot of character development for Smith.
Otherwise? I think the way Smith would show affection in a very unhealthy way would be by possession. He must own Neo. He will chase him (the exact way he did in Reloaded through Revolutions, even chased him all the way into the real world!) until he gets him. He'd be overly territorial to the point it'd be overbearing.
If we're talking about how he would show affection while the timeline is still set in the movies, he simply would not be able to understand his own intense feelings for neo adequately enough to be able to interpret and act them out in a way that wouldn't be completely destructive. In order for his manner of "affection" to win Neo over, Neo has to be a god that understands and forgives and sympathises, and thankfully, Neo really is this kind of "god". Smith would break the moment Neo sees through him.
Neo on the other hand, if I'm going to go off what I can parse out from the movies.... To be honest it'd probably be sex. We can see that he never ever once gets his hands off of Trinity in Reloaded. For fucks sake he jumps on her the MOMENT Link walks out. He'd probably crave sexual contact with Smith.
In the draft script of Reloaded though there isn't any such thing as an explicit Neotrin sex scene, there's still a scene where Dujour and Chong tell them about how important it is that they should have sex, etc etc. Plus the existence of the rave orgy scene implies that apparently this is what is considered the highest form of affection and intimacy for Zionites, so it'd be the same for Neo.
Otherwise and on a far less sexual note, his way of showing affection is probably just *being there* for Smith as he struggles through his messy existence. Quality time together, you know.
9. Do you see them getting married, and if yes what does their wedding look like?
No, they wouldn't get married. Marriage is only a piece of worthless paper made from only human customs to signify a relationship. It doesn't have to be the end point of any relationship to "perfect" or "complete" it. Neo and Smith have a deeper connection than this, but I still think there is potential for fun in an OOC type marriage scenario.
10. Can you imagine them having any kids or pets?
I actually have this weird running thing that keeps popping up in my head where Neo and Smith adopt a white cat called Jamais Vu, a parody of Deja Vu.
Of course the word "adopt" doesn't quite fit here, it'd be more like the cat shows up often from time to time til the point Neo can name it and they recognise each other.
And a little bit of OOC guilty pleasure: I like to think they might unofficially adopt Sati, though she'd definitely think of Smith as the bad parent and Neo as the good parent and get grumpy when she sees Smith. You best believe Seraph would be "fighting for custody", though.
11. How do they comfort each other?
With presence, with existence, with words and feelings and their connection. With deep, unrivalled understanding of each other and therefore who they are, what they're here to do, how they feel.
12. Is there anything you don't like about this ship?
Nothing. Not even the fact it isn't canon, actually, in fact I think that makes it even better. "The fact Smith died!" Could have been a potential answer, but even then, that was such masterful writing on the Wachowski's part, that I can't say anything.
13. What would be their least favourite thing about each other?
LMAO.
Smith hates Neo's ability to understand, ability to believe in love or even in something no matter what it is, hates Neo's ability to be unbothered by the stench and smell and abhorrence of his own human kind, he pretty much hates Neo himself, even, even if I like to interpret that hate as more of a messed up byproduct or outcome of his own hard to understand, burning love for Neo that he interprets as obsession, and because he is wired the way he is and made for that one purpose and that purpose only: To Kill Neo, his love comes out as hate.
Neo probably hated Smith too in the beginning, but as a personification of the system. After all Smith is an enforcer of it, this fake digital prison that has so many of his fellow men in it. And also Smith literally kidnapped Morpheus, a man Neo already had held in high regard. But frankly, that hate turned into understanding into a little bit of pity or sympathy.
14. What sorts of things might they argue about?
Everything they already do argue about in the trilogy (take special note of their final conversation in Revolutions). I have nothing to add onto this.
15. Do they face any pushback from friends, families, or society over their relationship?
Now THIS is an interesting question! I read once in this really cool RPG a scenario where nearly all the programs and rebels disapproved of Smith and Neo's public relationship because they were "different races", and they even had a made up slur for a human that dates a program (little questionable, but keep in mind this RPG was made in 2005)
Meanwhile, Neo's "parents" who are still alive in this AU are deeply shocked that he's dating a man, but if we are to be precise, Smith is not a man, he's genderless lines of ageless code meant to look behave and talk like society's portrayal of a man and to inhabit a man's shell. We don't even know for sure if Smith has a dick, I don't even think he's ever taken his clothes off before frankly!
So basically I mentioned this AU because it got me thinking: holy shit, Smith and Neo would be the ONE and ONLY program/human mixed relationship in their world. That'd be cool. I like to imagine they'd be more of a beacon of the humanity in programs and the ultimate symbolism of humanity and machinekind's ability to love each other and work together more than a point of disdain for all three factions (machine, programs, humans) though.
So no, no pushback, though I imagine it would definitely be shocking to learn that the adored One is in a relationship with what is considered the "enemy", but that's nice too, because it shows the ultimate acceptance, and isn't that exactly what progressives(the rebels) strive for?
16. Who has more experience with relationships?
Definitely Neo lol. Neo would be the first ever person Smith would have ever had something going on with. I think Neo may have had relationships with others before Trinity, too.
17. What physical traits do they find most attractive about each other?
Hmm, this is tricky.
I can't exactly see Smith outwardly liking anything physical about Neo to be honest? I know that sounds absurd, but if following canon we all know Smith finds humans repulsive to smell touch and even see, I think. It'd be hard for him to overcome this problem even when together with Neo.
But then again, that's the thing about being in love. When you love them, you will love the body that holds the mind and the person that you love. The more you speak to them, the more you are enamoured by them, the more attractive they appear to you, the more you are able to romanticise their body. That's the case for me as well.
So maybe.... Smith's favourite thing about Neo's body is... His elegance??? The way he moves with totally unconscious grace. He'd love everything about Neo's body, there wouldn't be a favourite part, all parts are equally liked.
And Neo's favourite thing about Smith's is his expressive face that shows his humanity, particularly his eyes, the window to the soul.
Sorry, I can't answer these questions sexually as originally intended. I realise that I've never even put in thought to that question before answering this, which is a bit shocking.
18. Do they ever engage in PDA, and if so, to what extent?
Neo seems to be more private. Everybody knows what goes down behind doors, but he still has the decency to wait until they'd be alone to go ham on Smith. If in public, I don't think I've ever seen him even ONCE touch or hold trinity's hand or kiss her in the audience of several people.
If however let's say they haven't seen each other in a long time etc or something serious is going down, Neo would probably abandon all pretense and kiss him and throw his arms around him at his first chance, just the way he did for Trinity in Mobil Ave and after she revived.
Smith on the other hand.... Oh boy. He'd PDA all OVER the damn place. In the first place he wouldn't hold any regard for what is considered acceptable in human society or etiquette in the first place, he's a rogue program.
That's ironic, since he is supposed to be the personification of those societal expectations. Plus because of his tendency for possessiveness that I mentioned earlier, he'd probably feel a need to signal to everybody and anybody that THIS IS MINE, HISS, DO NOT COME CLOSE.
Besides, Smith is childish in the sense that he is just now figuring out his own humanity, so like a child he'd probably want to completely own the one constant and one thing in his life, Neo, and cling onto him.
19. What are the most sensitive parts of each others body?
Neo: Waist, stomach, back. He probably doesn't have a ticklish neck if he can wear that long mandarin collar all day every day. Maybe his inner thighs if I let myself be a little idealistic?
Smith: Does Smith even feel sensations???? Or does he just mechanically register them in code or some shit? Maybe he only is able to start registering them after he goes rogue? Either way I don't think Smith would be sensitive literally anywhere. That or the complete opposite, where he is sensitive everywhere because he is unused to the new sensation of pain or pleasure or touch etc, and hates it.
20. What is their dynamic like in the bedroom?
As for the question of top or bottom, I honestly am only interested in Neo as a bottom and Smith as a top, but realistically speaking they would switch. Although here's my take on that: I think the very first time they do it, Neo would definitely have to be the receiver, because of Smith's desire to consume and own, and because Smith who has always craved a position of power/security would probably rather shoot himself in the head than ever bottom.
For Smith to bottom would have to take time and would only happen later into their relationship once Smith fully trusts Neo, and once he's developed enough. Besides, Neo would probably like to try something different from what he's used to with Trinity.
And no, I don't believe Trinity would have ever pegged Neo at all, because that's a common projection from the queer fandom onto two characters who are a typical cisgender heterosexual couple. So yes, Neo would have something different in bed with Smith. I think that's a cool parallel with the two people most important to Neo's story.
Okay, seems like that's it. Thanks for reading through this whole thing, if you did! Feel free to make your own SmiNeo or TriNeo or etc etc versions of this, I'd love to read that.

— keep it under wraps
characters: dazai osamu/reader, (mentioned: yosano akiko)
wc & synopsis: 2.2k – Practiced crafts under years of experience comes like second nature, an extension of one's body, almost like breathing. Yet you find yourself like a newborn deer with its shaky legs, afraid of the world it is born into as you are tending to man whose body you've treated and familiarised with after countless times before. (minor wound dressing, nothing explicit)
notes: hello! long time no dazai writing. this one's special for me. originally, i thought i'd break my dazai-silence with something different instead we got this. if you're familiar with my series A Case Of Bad Luck, you can take it as an extension of it (-cannot blame me for wanting to start with a fic for my favorite ongoing series ahaha.) It can be read independently but it's implied reader and Dazai have met in the past, long enough to have left an impact on each other. Leaving Yokohama and returning years later, this is their first proper confrontation/acknowledging one another.

The day’s peace is interrupted by sudden commotion by the front door.
5 minutes prior Dr. Yosano receives a call which results in her now forgotten cup of tea. From the sounds you can hear in the next room, you can make out the telltale signs of preparations for a possible operation. If you’re lucky it’s simple suture work at best, if it’s a bad day, she’ll have to use her ability.
And you hope, and pray if there’s anyone there, that it won’t have to come to this. Anything that further upsets and hurts her makes your stomach turn, leaving a sour taste and colder memories in their wake.
When the detectives rush in, she immediately looks over to divide their situations one by one. The information Kunikida provided beforehand helps with the makeshift triage, and within a blink of an eye, you find yourself alone in her office. Standing there under the bright light.
Before disappearing behind the door, she waved a hand off saying it was no hassle, that she can handle it herself, “You should attend to anyone else who might need assistance.” It is a simple request, a basic statement. But the look flashing before her eyes told you otherwise.
Worry pooling in her eyes, regret and an apology.
For what? You wanted to ask for a second but the faltered coughs coming from the room made you feel selfish for even holding her up for this long.
Dr. Yosano’s normally chatty room now contains you cold and empty. What is usually your escape and solace now feels to be swallowing you.
You’re aware of him, his faint breaths but you make no move just yet.
Just a few more seconds of courage, just enough to push down your thoughts and memories from reaching the surface.
During the call, Kunikida had said it was one grave injury and one minor. And the first thing Dr. Yosano had asked was if they needed to go through with the plan.
You hadn’t even bothered asking then, maybe you should have.
Your silence only must have suspected more, her gut feeling proving closer to truth each day.
So to the grave injury she went, and to the minor one you- due to the priorities of the cases and because her ability wouldn’t have worked on him any way, so it was better to be doing a basic wound dressing.
You swallow once, thickly, your throat hurts. Behind you you can her footsteps towards the examination chair.
You allow yourself one more moment, close your eyes, take a deep breath in and out. Open them.
It’s been years since you’ve last been alone in a room with Dazai Osamu.
Ignoring his gaze on you, you walk up to the cabinet to get the materials you need.
It should be a basic injury, so the basics will do.
Legs swinging in the air, Dazai watches you with keen interest.
After months of dancing around the topic and ignoring one another altogether, there is a lingering curiosity in how things will progress from here on.
How much longer can you keep this up, is the real question.
It’s been taking its toll on you lately, he can tell. Skeletons in your closet, you never let the past drop fully, always have to go back and tamper, seek out a pile of bones when in dire need of talking. Isn’t it tiring? Aren’t you exhausted?
You look nothing like what he last saw, maybe that’s an improvement, a small victory in your book.
You seem to have come a long way, moved on, moved away, started fresh.
Clearly not enough from how you came back all the way here.
To push away the standard practice and instead sign up to work under her, under the Armed Detective Agency.
Almost as if a part of you still seeks it.
“Good evening, sir.” You say the word wincing, force of habit. “Could you take off your coat for me?” you say, rest of voice unfaltering, practiced decency and greetings to the notch. Your eyes watching his every movement, you wait for any sign of pain to locate the wound.
Maybe it’s not as much of a standard treatment. You do call everyone here with titles rather than names after all. You keep a distance, closest you are with is the doctor and even then you don’t drop titles of respect and the walls separating you from everyone else.
Dazai is uncharacteristically silent- for his persona he has crafted and wore here at least. It is unnerving to a degree but not the first time you’ve had to endure this thick silence in the air, lingering, waiting for any sign of weakness to suffocate its victims.
Or it could be just that. Lost in thoughts. If you recall the details, he wasn’t in charge of this case originally, but as it grew and the roots spread, more focus was shifted its way.
Something appearing innocent in the mirage of a ball of cotton and sinking anyone foolish enough to approach it with no caution.
There are many examples of this in nature- angler fish, rafflessia, a peculiar man wrapped in too many bandages for his own good hiding secrets and burdens too much for his body to contain.
Dangerous beings, predators lying in wait.
You take Dazai’s hands and inspect each digit, forearms and up to his shoulder.
On his left arm the gauze has gotten crimson red, smelling of iron.
Slowly your hand trails down and finds the start of the gauze tucked under the wraps as your eyes roam his torso for any signs of multiple injuries.
This isn’t proper examination, not really.
You should’ve checked his breathing too, looked for his intercostals, listened to his lungs, asked him what had happened and where else he got shot.
Yet you’re aware the attempt would’ve been futile, from the moment his coat was off and your hands were on him, you knew there wasn’t anything else.
Sometimes you think, and fear, that you know his body better than your own.
Unwrapping the gauze with sharp and precise movements, you reveal his forearm.
Still littered in cuts and patches of dry skin here and there. He must be wrapping it too tight at some areas because the body hair has grown at uneven lengths there.
After all these years he still cannot do his bandages himself, but tucks the end just the way you do.
Something about the notion makes your heart ache.
It stings, to think how much yet how little has changed.
Your fingers still dance on his skin with the same precision, and his body responds with the same touch starved state, hairs on end for a moment until he adjusts to the heat coming from your body and care coming from your hands.
It intrigues Dazai how despite everything, even from the very start you still hold him like something delicate, fragile, handle him with care one would only have for something they value greatly- even if not that grand, there’s still care to an extent.
You hold the materials with a confidence now, Dazai notes. Boldness of someone who knows what they’re doing, you’re swift as you lay down what you’ll be needing, you open few packs of gauze sponge and pour iodine tincture without taking them off yet. Place them side by side, cut strips of gauze and nonwoven plaster, already calculating how wide you’ll need each piece- an extra cut in the middle of each, he notices.
His wound is nothing big, even left with his preexisting bandages, he would’ve been fine- or so he said until Kunikida started going on a lecture about infections and what-not. Big deal! If the universe wishes for your paths to be clashing so soon, well he will have no complaints.
Satisfied with the set up, you wash and disinfect your hands again.
This is the same routine you’ve always done, know by heart, hands moving on their own. It’s fascinating how muscle memory resurfaces even after so long, the bodies and the nerves are truly amazing. It comes to you as second nature by now, to undo his bandages, look over for any signs of concerning signs, even in the dim lights you can tell apart what is his body’s usual and not.
Grabbing the first gauze sponge, you wipe the wound off with one swift motion, toss it to the side and grab another one. Starting from the center of the wound, to the outside you wipe it in one circular motion, toss this one when you’re done with it and wait a few seconds.
Placing a smaller one on top of his wound, your hand then mindlessly goes for the pieces of plaster and you apply them carefully over the gauze. Not too tight nor loose- enough to let the wound breathe, your fingers linger a moment too long on his skin when you’re done.
With a slight shake of your head, you retract your hand immediately and reach for the gauze strip.
Despite all the discordance and circumstances out of your control, it’s the small routines that have helped you keep you somewhat grounded, to keep going. And despite being one of your greatest sources of said disturbances, Dazai had become a part of the said routines as well.
As familiar as the night time, his presence had become something comforting, as all kinds of feelings swirled like an impending storm from within, ready to burst out of your chest at any given time.
There was nothing normal and everything odd with your run-ins with Dazai, were you to think about it. Each one weirder than the last, and growing into something much twisted, roots of the ivy digging deeper, maybe it’s the unfamiliarity that brought comfort, the change that comes with the unknown. At nights, you had some resemblance of a control. At nights, it was just your room and the bright, faraway lights of nearby signs illuminating your room, he fitted right in instead of standing out. Eyes trained on your body, silent and waiting for your signs. An illusion maybe but a taste of control nonetheless.
You’d like to think he enjoyed it somewhat too, the opportunity to observe you in a shade tad different, inspect a side to you you’re yet to experiment with.
And each night, you chose to hold out to him that beacon of compromise, an olive branch, restocked on gauze in the house- not that anyone noticed it lessening in amount.
It’s the same hands moving then, with the same routine like a ritual on themselves.
Yet you’ve grown, and changed. Your eyes no longer carry the same light of empathy as they once did. You’re more distant now, tried your best to keep him at a arm’s length so far, and it worked to an extent.
If that’s how you want to play, then fine, he’ll play along. It’s only so long until you lose control again.
And when it does, it’ll be Dazai who’ll be there in wait, the only one to know how to handle and cradle you, how to assess the situation to the best of opportunities.
You wrap the area of his wound and the rest of his arm separately. Firm in your touch, you tuck the end of the gauze despite fixating it with an extra piece of plaster.
“Your wound will need redressing and inspecting to see how it has healed.” You give notice.
With a nod of his head, he flashes one of his smiles, not reaching his eyes. “Thanks, there!-”
“Doctor.” you correct him, the word leaving your lips like cold metal.
“Well, thanks doc.” Dazai says, his smile morphing somewhat wicked. Now the edges of his mouth crooked, lids dropped slightly and a hint of poison to his voice, the man you’ve known comes oozing out of the cracks he so carefully filled.
You can never fix something to where it was, nor cover up the cracks with polish. There is no as “good” as “new”, it’s either, and even then the judgement depends entirely on the experience and the person.
“We’ll be seeing you later, then.” you say, to bid him away. And for once, Dazai complies without resistance, his smile never faltering and eyes never leaving yours, ‘I see you, and I see this gimmick you’re trying to pull.’
Hopping off the stretcher, he reaches for his coat with his uninjured arm, not bothering to button up his shirt; he stops by the door, hand stroking your bandage work for a moment.
Neither of you make a comment on the lack of time you’ve given him to come visit Dr. Yosano’s office again. After all old habits die hard, and both of you still remember the specifics as clear as day.
A part of you wishes to yell then, or push him by the chest, say there’s no pretending, that this is who you are, truly, at heart, that you’re a good person with nothing left to hide now.
Regardless, if it’s a show he wants, you’ll give either way- you always do. And with sharp eyes he'll wait for you to squirm and fall, and once more you’ll stand tall with your head held high, chest heaving with the weight of his gaze. Sooner or better, you’ll accept his fingers are intervening within the strings of your fate.

"A tenant will be moving into the basement today," Jimin says, his voice casual as he starts on an espresso order. The hiss of the steaming wand fills the air.
"The basement?" You glance up from your clipboard, where you've been noting inventory. Your fingers hover over the bags of coffee beans before you start counting them out loud.
"Yeah, so get rid of all your stuff down there," he continues. "It's all trash."
You pause mid-count, narrowing your eyes at him. "You do know there's one box that belongs to Kim Seokjin."
"I know," he says, unfazed, tamping the espresso with practiced ease. "So just clean it up."
"Because he's my ex?"
"Obviously."
"Rude." Jimin smirks, entirely unbothered, before his expression shifts into something borderline angelic. With a practiced smile, he slides a cup across the counter. "Your espresso is ready! And here's a cookie—on the house!" he says, voice suddenly dripping with warmth as he hands it to the customer.
The customer beams, thanking him before heading to their table, completely unaware of the menace lurking beneath that sweet façade. You, however, know better. Jimin has always been like this—blunt, sweet, and on occasion, bordering on heartless, but never without good intentions. You’ve known him since college, back when you were just another over-caffeinated lit student drowning in deadlines, and he was the pre-law major guy who somehow had everything together. He was charming in that effortless way—always quick with a teasing remark, but also the kind of friend who showed up when you needed him, no questions asked.
After graduating, while you floundered between odd jobs and your dream of becoming a writer, Jimin went ahead and made something of himself after working at a law firm. He opened this café, built a life around it, and when you were struggling, he gave you a place to stay. Rent-free, no strings attached—except for the occasional demand that you work the counter when he was understaffed, which, honestly, was often.
And now, apparently, he's renting out the basement. You roll your eyes, which Jimin catches immediately. "Y/N, stop spacing out and take out the trash," he chides, already moving on to his next order.
With an exaggerated sigh, you grab the garbage bags and push through the back door. The moment you step outside, the heat wraps around you like an oppressive blanket. Cicadas drone endlessly, their hum rising and falling in waves, amplifying the stillness of the afternoon.
As you toss the trash into the bin, your gaze drifts toward the basement windows. The glass is smudged with dust, the interior barely visible through the faint reflections of the street. The idea of someone actually living down there feels… strange.
For the past three years, the basement has been nothing but a forgotten space, cluttered with boxes, old café equipment, and—most importantly—traces of Kim Seokjin.
It’s at this moment that Jimin’s words echo in your mind: Get rid of all your stuff.
He wants you to clean it out, but just the thought of it exhausts you. Maybe he needs the extra rent money, though it’s hard to imagine him struggling financially.
Still, why now? Why suddenly rent out a place that’s been abandoned for so long?
That space has been nothing more than a storage room—a place where things go to be forgotten, including the remnants of your past with Seokjin.
You met Seokjin when he was fresh out of college, preparing for his master’s in literature. He had this quiet confidence, the kind that made people naturally gravitate toward him. Handsome, soft-spoken, kind—someone everyone admired. And somehow, for reasons you still don’t fully understand, he chose you.
Not that you were insecure. You weren’t clingy, and he was always faithful. Your relationship was easy, steady—comfortable in a way that made you believe it would last at least three years of quiet stability.
Until one day, without warning, he left.
Jimin had dismissed it as a submersible breakup—a term he coined for relationships that sink silently, without a fight or a final word. Which felt, exactly like that.
It was during that time, while you were drowning in the wreckage, that Jimin, with all the money he’d stacked up working as a top-notch lawyer, decided to buy this building.
A quiet place in a calm residential neighborhood of Seoul.
This building which ended up becoming your home.
The second floor, where you lived.
The first floor, where the ”Butterfly by Jimin” cafe was born.
And the basement, once a roasting room and a storage space—now, supposedly, someone’s future studio.
Jimin had called it financial therapy.
"A new home, a new job," he’d said. "There's nothing like financial therapy to heal the wounds of a heart broken person."
You scoff, because he wasn’t even the one who was experiencing one of the worse lows of their life.
But a new home?
A new job?
It had actually worked. Maybe that, and the book you wrote in the aftermath—Falling Moon Under the Bridge—becoming a surprise bestseller had been enough to pull you forward.
You’ve come so far, running in the opposite direction of your past. And yet, the weight of it lingers, like dust unsettled in the basement.
With a deep breath, you turn back toward the café, deciding that you’ll clean it out later. Since your shift ended, you head upstairs to get changed before you meet with your publisher later that afternoon for your audiobook’s recording session.
But just as you step inside, the bell above the door chimes.
A waft of something mild drifts through the air.
Fabric softener?
You glance toward the entrance just as a man walks in, catching only the back of him before looking away.
"I love the fabric softener scent, but it doesn’t mix well with the humid summer heat."
You arrive at the recording studio in the late afternoon, the faint hum of music equipment and muffled voices filtering through the hallway as you find the right room. This is where you’re meeting with your publisher, Kim Taehyung.
Taehyung, like Jimin, is an upperclassman friend from college. Since you were both in the literature department, you worked on a bunch of projects together as literary apprentices under your old mentor, Professor Jeon. He was brutal, and pushed you both hard during undergrad. But looking back, you know it was worth it. His strict guidance and high standards helped shaped your writing today.
After graduating, Taehyung started working as an intern at a publishing company, and now, well, he's one of the head publishers there. It’s crazy to think about how far he’s come, but honestly, it’s not surprising. He always had this sharp eye for detail and a way with words that made his work stand out.
After locating the room, you step inside and are immediately greeted by Taehyung, his signature easygoing smile lighting up his face as he holds out a familiar yellow carton of banana milk.
"Thanks for coming on such short notice, Y/N," he says, his voice warm and appreciative as he presses the cold carton into your hands. "I really needed your insight on this. You always have such a unique perspective, and I didn’t want to make any big decisions without running it by you first."
You smile, accepting the drink and taking a seat in one of the plush chairs near the recording booth. Slipping the straw through the foil, you take a sip, savoring the familiar cold, sweet taste of the banana milk. "No worries at all," you reply, leaning back comfortably. "I’m actually really glad to be here. I’ve never sat in on an audiobook recording before. When does it start?"
Taehyung glances at his watch, his expression brightening. "Just in a bit! I’m having a friend of mine handle the narration. He’s got this incredible voice, and honestly, he was highly recommended by Professor Jeon. I think he’s going to bring something really special to the project."
As Taehyung speaks, you flip through the script he handed you earlier, scanning the highlighted passages and margin notes. Your best-selling book’s first half is from the point of view of a man named Haneul, who has a near-death experience and begins seeing a specific woman, Seo Yul in his dreams every night. Determined to find her in real life, he embarks on a journey that blurs the lines between reality and illusion.
You’ve always had a vague image of Haneul in your mind—his mannerisms, his voice, the way he carries himself. But could there actually be someone out there to fit his voice. The door to the recording studio opens with a soft click, pulling you from your thoughts. The sound of footsteps shuffles into the room, accompanied by the faint rustle of fabric and the clink of ice in a cup. A cool breeze from the hallway briefly sweeps in before the door closes again.
"Sorry I’m late, hyung," a deep, smooth voice says, tinged with a hint of apology but also a casual ease.
"That’s okay! Did you get here alright? It’s pretty hot out there," Taehyung replies, his tone light and forgiving.
"I drove and picked up an iced Americano on the way, so it wasn’t too bad," the voice responds, and you can hear the smile in his words.
At the sound of the unfamiliar voice, you finally look up from the script.
And that’s when you see him.
He’s tall, with an effortlessly handsome presence that immediately draws your attention. His plain white t-shirt hugs his frame just right, paired with medium-wash jeans that look like they’ve been worn a hundred times but still fit perfectly. A silver lip ring sits on the corner of his mouth, catching the studio lights and glinting subtly as he speaks. His dark hair is slightly tousled, as if he’d run a hand through it on his way in, and there’s a relaxed confidence in the way he carries himself.
But what stands out the most isn’t his appearance—it’s his voice. Deep and smooth, it carries effortlessly in the room, each word deliberate and weighted with a natural lilt that makes everything he says sound intentional, almost melodic. It’s the kind of voice that could make even the most mundane sentence sound captivating.
You consider greeting him, but he’s already caught up in conversation with Taehyung and a few others in the room—people who seem to know him well.
You decide not to bother. It’s a hassle to talk to and befriend new people anyway. You’ve never been one to insert yourself into situations where you might feel out of place, and right now, it’s easier to just stay in your corner.
But then, a shadow approaches, lingering just beside you. You glance up, your pen pausing mid-scribble.
"Hello, Sunbae."
Sunbae?
The word catches you off guard. You blink at him, your mind racing. How old is he? You quickly do the math in your head, trying to figure out if he’s younger or if he’s just being overly polite. Either way, the title feels a little too formal, especially in this setting.
"Oh hi there, I’m L/N F/N, the author of this book," you say, offering a polite smile. Your voice is steady, but there’s a flicker of curiosity in your tone. You’re not used to being called sunbae—it’s been a while since you graduated, and you’ve always preferred a more casual approach to these things.
"Kim Jungkook," he introduces himself, holding out a hand. His grip is firm, warm, and there’s a confidence in the way he meets your gaze. "I heard you graduated from the school I’m attending. I’m an art major there. I’m looking forward to working with you."
You shake his hand, nodding slowly as you process his words. An art major? That explains the effortless style, the subtle edge to his appearance. But more than that, it’s the way he carries himself—like he’s comfortable in his own skin, unbothered by the weight of first impressions.
"Ah, it’s been a while since I graduated," you reply, your tone light. "And we weren’t in the same department, so just call me by my name." You try to brush off the formality, hoping to ease into a more relaxed dynamic. Titles always feel so distant, and you’d rather not have that kind of barrier between you, especially when you’re about to collaborate on something as personal as your book.
But Jungkook shakes his head, his lips quirking slightly into a small, almost teasing smile. "No, I can’t do that, Sunbae—" he says, his voice low but firm, leaving the sentence hanging as the audio engineer calls him over to enter the recording booth. He gives you a polite nod before heading inside, slipping on the headphones.
As Jungkook walks away, you glance down at your hand, flexing your fingers absentmindedly. The warmth of his grip still lingers, a faint echo that feels oddly significant.
Odd. That interaction felt strangely familiar, like a déjà vu you can’t quite place.
You’re certain you’ve never met Jungkook before—his looks alone aren’t easy to forget. The sharp jawline, the lip ring, the way his eyes seem to hold a thousand unspoken thoughts—it’s all too distinctive to slip your memory. And yet, there’s something about him, something that tugs at the edges of your mind, like a half-remembered dream you can’t quite piece together.
Your gaze drifts toward his plastic coffee cup resting on the table. The cup sleeve catches your eye, and you lean in slightly to get a better look.
Butterfly by Jimin Café.
Jimin’s café?
Wait—hold on.
Your breath stills for a second as realization dawns. The scent of fabric softener from earlier today, the fleeting brush of someone’s shoulder against yours in the crowded café, the low murmur of a voice apologizing as they passed by. It all comes rushing back.
Your eyes widen.
You lift your head, and across the studio, Jungkook is watching you.
With a smirk.
There’s something unreadable in his expression, something knowing, as if he’s been waiting for this moment, waiting for you to connect the dots that you do not know of. His lips curve slightly, and his eyes lock onto yours, holding your gaze for a beat too long.
Shit.
You quickly look away, pretending to be absorbed in the script. Your heart pounds in your chest, and you can feel the heat rising to your cheeks. You flip a page, your fingers trembling just slightly, hoping no one notices the way your composure has slipped.
The recording session begins, and Jungkook’s voice fills the space, steady and rich, effortlessly slipping into the role of the narrator.
["From the brief meetings we shared, I found that she was a woman who walked on eggshells, carefully maintaining her image for the public, despite the wounds buried beneath layers of fabric, skin, and deep within her heart. The dead of winter held no meaning for her—it was merely a reminder of those who had already left..."]
You sit there, struck still.
His voice is captivating. Deep, intimate, carrying the weight of every word with precise control. It’s like he’s not just reading the lines…he’s living them, breathing life into Haneul in a way that feels almost too real. The room seems to shrink, the world narrowing down to the sound of his voice and the way it wraps around you, pulling you into your own story all over again.
The staff murmurs amongst themselves, impressed.
"His tone fits the male lead perfectly," someone comments.
"He’s got that quiet intensity," another agrees.
Next to you, Taehyung leans in, grinning. "Isn’t he good?"
You nod slowly, but as Jungkook’s voice continues to flow through the speakers—deep, smooth, and effortlessly intense—you feel a rush of warmth creep up your neck, spreading across your cheeks.
Shit.
You force yourself to look away, fixing your gaze on the script in your lap as if it holds the secrets of the universe. But the heat lingers, stubborn and undeniable, prickling at your skin. You swallow, praying that no one notices—especially not him.
After the recording ends at 7:30 PM, you, Taehyung, and the studio crew spill out into the warm evening air, the city lights casting a golden glow over the streets. The group makes its way to a nearby restaurant, a cozy but lively spot with wooden tables and the comforting aroma of sizzling food. The hum of conversations mixes with the clinking of glasses and the occasional burst of laughter, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Plates of food quickly fill the table—crispy fried chicken, steaming bowls of tteokbokki, and an assortment of banchan that everyone eagerly digs into. Pitchers of beer are poured freely, and the mood is light, the kind of easy camaraderie that comes after a long but successful day of work.
Taehyung, always in his element when surrounded by people, is mid-story, waving an onion ring around as he speaks. His cheeks are slightly flushed, and his gestures are more animated than usual, a sure sign that he’s had a drink or two.
“The narration was amazing, right?” he exclaims, dunking the onion ring into a pool of ketchup with enthusiasm. “I mean, Jungkook just nailed it. Didn’t he?”
Mid-sip of your beer, you hum noncommittally, avoiding his gaze. “Yeah… well.”
Taehyung squints at you, his grin turning sly. “That doesn’t sound convincing.”
You set your glass down, shrugging a little too casually. “I mean, it was really good,” you admit, your voice a little too even, a little too careful. You’re not sure why you’re downplaying it, but something about admitting how much Jungkook’s performance affected you feels… dangerous.
Taehyung leans back in his chair, clearly not buying it. “I’ve been working with a lot of student interns at the university, and they say he’s ridiculously multitalented. It’s crazy that he’s not just looks,” he continues, his tone teasing.
You give a small nod, but your thoughts are already straying.
Back to the recording session.
Back to Jungkook’s voice.
It had been deep, smooth, and filled the space in a way that was almost too good. Every syllable had weight, sinking into your bones like warmth on a cold day. Soft yet sultry. Intimate in a way that felt excessive.
Hold on. Do you have some kind of… voice fetish?
Shit.
Your fingers tighten slightly around your glass. The thought alone makes your face burn. You swore off dating—hell, you swore off men—and now here you are, sitting at a bar, spiraling over some junior you just met. This is bad.
Taehyung must notice the way your expression shifts because he suddenly grins. “So, Bookworm, what have you been up to lately?”
The nickname makes you blink. It’s been ages since he called you that. He’s definitely tipsy.
“Just writing, working at Jimin’s café, and sometimes I travel,” you say, eager to steer the conversation elsewhere.
“You’ve clearly won at life!” Taehyung announces, lifting his glass like he’s toasting you.
“Won?” You laugh, shaking your head. “I just live a simple life, day by day. Lethargic and exhausted by passion.”
The words come out more honest than you intend, but Taehyung doesn’t seem to catch on.
But someone else does.
Jungkook.
You feel it before you see it—his gaze. When your eyes finally flick over, sure enough, he’s looking at you.
Not glancing. Not idly observing.
Looking.
Something about it makes your skin prickle. Not in a bad way. Not in a way you know how to name.
And yet, instead of breaking away, he holds it.
Your breath hitches.
You quickly turn back to Taehyung, willing your cheeks to cool, forcing your expression into something neutral. Jimin once told you that your eyes tend to wander when you’re deep in thought, but this is different. Why does Jungkook keep meeting them?
Is he curious about you? Just polite? Or worse—does he know?
Does he see how you’re reacting to him?
You shake the thought away, burying it under more beer.
It doesn’t matter.
You’ve been through enough to know that people like Jungkook—ones with easy smiles and a natural charm that makes everyone in the room lean in—are dangerous.
Because you’ve met someone like that before.
And it nearly destroyed you.
The alcohol isn’t helping now. It’s loosening your thoughts, making it harder to keep your guard up. You rub your temple, exhaling sharply, just as your phone buzzes in your pocket. You’re relieved for a distraction, until you see the name on the screen.
Jimin.
Of course.
You quickly stand, finger nearing to answer the call. “Hey, Taehyung, I’m gonna take this call.”
Taehyung raises a brow, his grin turning mischievous. “Jimin again? Man, you guys are always together. Are you dating or something?”
You snort, rolling your eyes. “Honestly, it’s more like family. He’s an annoying older brother.”
Taehyung laughs, nodding. “That checks out.”
You step away from the table, the noise of the restaurant fading slightly as you press your phone to your ear. “Hey, what do you want—”
“Why didn’t you clean the basement yet?!” Jimin’s voice is sharp, cutting through the buzz in your head.
“Oh, fuck.” Your stomach drops. “Completely forgot. I’m at a work dinner.”
“The tenant’s stuff is coming in the morning,” Jimin says, his tone exasperated but laced with concern. “Where are you? I’ll drive and pick you up.”
You sigh, running a hand through your hair. “The Tavern Grill, near the recording studio.”
“I know where that is,” Jimin replies quickly. “Just come outside so I find you more easily when I wait for you on the curb. I’m on my way.”
“Fine, fine. Let me say goodbye first,” you mutter, already heading toward the door.
As you weave through the tables, you can’t help but glance back at the group. Taehyung is laughing at something someone said, his arm slung over the back of his chair.
When you return, Taehyung gives you an exaggerated pout. “Jimin coming to drag you home now?”
“Something like that.” You roll your eyes, already grabbing your things. “He said he’ll pick me up.”
Taehyung laughs, clapping a hand on your shoulder. “Tell him we need to grab a drink sometime. My treat.”
You grin, saying your goodbyes to the others—some casual, some playful.
Then, just as you’re about to leave, you glance over—
And Jungkook is still watching.
His fingers drum idly against his glass. He doesn’t move, doesn’t call out. But his gaze lingers, like there’s something he wants to say but won’t.
Your stomach twists.
You don’t know what it means. And you don’t want to find out.
So you turn away, stepping out into the night.
Whatever it is, it’s not your problem.
At least, that’s what you tell yourself.
Jimin walks ahead of you as you both descend the stairs to the basement. The air gets cooler with each step, but something else lingers—an acrid, stale scent that makes your nose wrinkle.
You frown. “Did you smoke before picking me up?”
Jimin lets out a soft chuckle, barely glancing back. “Wow, you really have a sharp nose, Y/N.” Then, without warning, he reaches over and fluffs your hair, like you’re some small puppy that just sniffed out the right answer.
You groan, swatting his hand away. “You know I hate the smell of cigarettes, Jimin.”
“I know, I know. Just… let it slide for today,” he mutters, tone quieter now. “Had a bad day.”
You don’t push. Not yet, at least.
The basement door groans on its hinges as you step inside. The air is heavier down here, tinged with dust and disuse. Jimin reaches for the light switch and flicks it—
Nothing.
He sighs. “Great. Power’s probably cut off for this room since we barely use it. I’ll go check the breaker.”
You pull out your phone, switching on the flashlight. “I’ll start looking through things in the meantime.”
Jimin eyes you skeptically. “You’re really gonna be able to see anything with just that?”
You give him a pointed look. “That should be the least of your worries. I just don’t want to be cleaning all night.”
He shrugs. “Suit yourself. I’ll be back.” With that, he heads back upstairs, leaving you alone with the stillness of the basement.
The dim beam of your flashlight sweeps over the space. Piles of forgotten things are stacked haphazardly—old college notebooks, loose papers, manuscripts half-finished and never revisited.
And then—
Your stomach tightens.
That box.
It’s been shoved far away from the rest, as if even in storage, you wanted it out of sight. But it’s still here. A silent, patient thing.
You step closer. Your fingers hesitate over the worn edges of the lid.
Then, with a quiet breath, you open it. Inside, time folds in on itself.
Your fingers graze the first thing on top—a faded movie ticket stub. The edges are soft, curling, worn from being thumbed over too many times in the past. You remember this night. Your night. Seokjin had held your hand through the entire movie, whispering sarcastic commentary in your ear, making you laugh so hard the people in front turned around to glare. You’d buried your face in his shoulder, giggling, and he had just smiled like you were the best thing to ever happen to him.
Your throat tightens.
Beneath it, a polaroid. The two of you at some festival, Seokjin holding up a peace sign while you kissed his cheek. The colors have faded slightly, but you can still see how bright his eyes were, how effortlessly happy you had looked. You weren’t even thinking about the camera—just him.
You swallow hard.
All of these things mean something to you, or at least, they once did. But the longer you stare at them—the trinkets, the letters, the pieces of Seokjin woven into your past—the more you wonder if they ever meant anything to him. If he could leave so easily, so cleanly, then what were these memories even worth?
Can you really throw all of this away?
Your fingers hesitate over the box when you hear footsteps behind you.
Figuring it’s Jimin, you sigh, still lost in thought. “Hey, why didn’t you turn the lights back on? Is there something wrong with the breaker—?”
Before you can finish, you’re shoved, your back colliding against the wall with a thud. A strong grip pins you in place, pressing into your shoulders.
Your pulse surges.
“What the fuck!? Who are you—”
“Why are you rummaging through someone else’s shit, you thief?”
The voice is sharp, accusatory. And absolutely not Jimin’s.
Your breath catches.
And then, the lights flick on.
Your vision adjusts, and when you see who exactly has you caged against the wall, your stomach flips.
Jungkook.
Wait. Jungkook?
His dark eyes widen the second he recognizes you, hands retreating from your shoulders like he’s been burned. “Oh, fuck.” His voice drops into sheer panic. “I’m so sorry—I didn’t know it was you!”
You blink, still trying to process what just happened.
He looks mortified, hands hovering near you like he wants to check for injuries but doesn’t dare touch you again. “Shit, I didn’t hurt you, did I? Are you okay?”
You exhale, still slightly dazed. “Ah… it’s okay—”
“No, it’s not,” he interrupts, eyes flickering with concern. His fingers ghost over your arms, searching for any sign that he might’ve been too rough. His hold, once bruising, is now careful. Deliberate. “I grabbed you way too hard. Are you sure you’re fine, Sunbae?”
You look at him properly now, still catching your breath. Damn.
His face is stupidly attractive up close, his brows knitted in pure remorse. His scent—clean, like fresh laundry mixed with something slightly musky—hits you all at once, making your stomach do something annoying.
He’s exactly your type.
And that realization makes this moment so much worse.
“You’re Kim Jungkook, right?” you ask, breaking the silence.
Jungkook straightens, nodding quickly. “Yeah. Wait… you don’t remember me?”
He sounds almost offended, tilting his head slightly.
You furrow your brows. “Sorry, I’m not good at remembering names or people for that matter.”
He blinks, then lets out a scoff—part amused, part incredulous. “Seriously? I recognized you the second the lights came on, but you forgot about me?”
Your lips twitch. Is he really pouting?
Whatever. You’re still processing the fact that you just got manhandled by this guy. He needs to take about five steps back.
You cross your arms, clearing your throat. “What are you even doing here, anyway?”
“Oh.” Jungkook’s expression shifts, his stance relaxing as he rubs the back of his neck. “This is my studio now.”
Your stomach drops.
“…What?” Your mind stutters over his words.
His studio?
Your eyes drift over the scattered boxes, the dust-lined shelves, the scent of old paper and forgotten memories lingering in the air. When Jimin had mentioned a tenant renting the basement, you’d barely paid attention, brushing it off as another small change in your life. But standing here now—with Jungkook, of all people—the reality sinks in with an unsettling twist in your gut.
This is his space now?
Before you can fully process the implications, footsteps echo from the stairwell, followed by Jimin’s familiar voice.
“All right, the power’s back on—” He stops mid-step as he takes in the scene, his gaze flicking between you and Jungkook. His brows furrow slightly, his usual easygoing expression dimming with curiosity.
“Oh, you two have met,” he says, a little slower than usual. “Y/N, this is Jungkook—”
“I’m aware,” you interrupt, still distracted by the realization. “We met earlier today during the recording session.”
Jimin’s brows lift. “Oh?”
“But what are you doing here, sunbae?” Jungkook asks, his tone shifting to something lighter, more casual. “Do you live nearby?”
“I’m cleaning out some of my stuff down here for… well, you, apparently.” You exhale, motioning vaguely to the clutter around you. “I live upstairs.”
Jungkook blinks. “Wait, seriously?”
Jimin, however, is less surprised. He crosses his arms, fixing Jungkook with a sharp look. “But, dear tenant, what are you doing here?” His voice dips into something more pointed. “Didn’t you say you’d be here tomorrow at noon?”
Jungkook barely flinches under the scrutiny. “I had something to check on.”
Jimin eyes him for a moment before sighing and letting go of whatever was on his mind.
“Do you want any help?” Jungkook asks, turning back to you.
Your pulse spikes. Oh, God.
The last thing you need is him digging through your things—especially the one box tucked carefully behind you. The one filled with Seokjin’s remnants.
“No!” you blurt out, too quickly. His brows raise, but you force a casual shrug. “I’m good. I’m just going to throw it all away anyway.”
Jungkook hums, glancing at the mess. But then, his eyes catch on something.
A photograph peeks from the top of one of your boxes, slightly askew. Before you can move to block it, his gaze sharpens, lips curling into something almost unreadable.
“Then I can throw it all away for you,” he says, voice smooth but laced with something just a little too amused. He meets your eyes with a slow tilt of his head. “You don’t need it, after all. This place is mine now.”
Something about the way he says it—the lazy drawl, the faint glint in his gaze—rubs you the wrong way.
Your stomach tightens.
Just hours ago, he’d been nothing but polite, apologetic even. But now? There’s something else beneath the surface. A hint of something sharper, something laced with an unspoken edge.
Is this actually his true nature?
This doesn't sit right—yet, at the same time, you can’t shake the curiosity gnawing at the back of your mind. You know better than to let your guard down, but part of you is pulled in, drawn to the enigma that is Kim Jungkook.
And so, without knowing how or why, you find yourself standing at the beginning of something unexpected.
This is how your story with Jungkook begins.

i really liked your eltingville club character analysis’s!!! in the bill one you mentioned how bill was showing vulnerability in the intervention, do you think he was also showing vulnerability at the beginning of this fan this monster? considering how his friends weren’t around for him to belittle or reinforce his power to, i’d love to see an analysis from you for bills behavior in this fan this monster and how joe influenced bill. ty and keep up the good work!! <3
Thank you, happy that you enjoyed them! Regarding Bill in This Fan This Monster, I think it could be argued that it shows up a little bit in the beginning considering that Joe is probably the closest thing that Bill has had to a consistent father figure in his life. Focusing on this comic by itself, (the inclusion of the first comic makes it a bit more confusing) its mentioned in the hospital that his parents are divorced and while when it specifically happened is unclear, his presence is also absent in other Eltingville comics. (excluding the first)
Bill’s mom probably did not play much of a role in his life as well, considering how much resentment they both have for each other, which can be seen though Bill’s mom preferring to get people to tie him up in a chair for hours to fix his comic obsession rather than just talking to him herself in The Intervention and accusing him of blaming her for the divorce in This Fan This Monster.
In summary, Bill is not on good terms with either of his parents and probably latched onto Joe because he appeared to care about similar interests. (though he just sees Bill more as a source of money rather than an actual person)
** From this, Joe probably influenced Bill's behavior the most since a lot of Joe's behavior seen in This Fan This Monster (saying customers have to be treated like idiots, that women don't actually like comics) reflected in Bill once Joe needs to leave for an emergency and in the Epilogue. (especially in his rant to Mandi)
** Though I don't think that Joe was someone that Bill would ever open up to regarding his personal life and issues, its idolization rather than an actual familial relationship at most
I would say that the beginning of the comic has a mixture of two things, Bill trying to appease and learn from Joe while looking up to him as somewhat of a father figure, but also constantly testing to see how much he can get away with, he is still just as willing to break rules if it means he has easier access to the things he wants. Though that appeasement definitely comes back in when he attempts to blame his friends for the destruction of the comic shop in order to still cling onto the power he just obtained.
On his friends not being around, I don’t think that Bill got better without them present. Although he is the leader of the Eltingville Club, Josh and Pete are there to constantly challenge his opinions which prevents his ego from going completely unchecked. With their absence, you can see Bill’s ego gradually become more inflated the more he is around Joe, getting worse when Joe temporarily puts him in charge. Joe ignores Bill a majority of the time aside from making fun of him for doing grunt work, which allows Bill to believe that he can get away with being an asshole because he now has a higher status, and with this higher status, he doesn’t need a friend group to control.
**I tend to see This Fan This Monster as Bills Icarus moment, in the sense that his ego rises over the comic only for it to come crashing down when he sets the comic shop on fire out of spite.
(Hopefully this answered your question/request! I have 2 other analysis essays I am going to write related to Eltingville, then I'll probably be done and focus on another topic of interest)

What is the “Law of Opposing Powers” and how can it level up your scenes?
Writing can be a really tough nut to crack. Readers should find every single scene interesting and be glued till the end, and let’s be honest—that’s not an easy thing to do.
With the rise of TikTok—to be honest, I don't know if we can blame TikTok or not, but since it’s banned in my country, it’s fun—readers need something interesting all the damn time. Like, you can't have a scene where your characters are just messing around, y’know. You need to move the story forward, or at least present a sort of conflict to the readers.
The readers should always have something to look forward to as the scene plays out. Is it because of their low attention span? Or, were the readers always like that? I don't really have an answer to that question. But, like I said, blaming TikTok is fun, so that’s all I’m gonna say.
Anyway, how do you solve this issue? How do you make sure each scene keeps your readers glued, even if it doesn't really push the story forward?
The answer to your woes, my friends, is the Law of Opposing Powers. (im sorry the name is so damn cringe but i jus came back from jim what else can u expect?)
***
#01. Character versus Character
So, what is this Law of Opposing Powers?
It’s simple, actually: you just need to have opposite powers at play in your scene. Let me explain.
Let’s suppose that there’s a scene where two characters are discussing something. Let’s say… they’ve just had a near-death experience and are discussing how they could have lost their lives in it. The scene is set; how do you make it interesting now?
One direct way is that you might let your characters agree on the issue, y’know. All of them say how it was actually really dangerous, and that the consequences would have been deadly. But, this scene won’t really be interesting to the readers.
Give your characters different opinions. Don't let one of them be the yes-man, y’know. Both of your characters should, firstly, have something to add to the discussion, and secondly, should have different opinions. That’s what you call opposing powers.
Let’s say that one of the characters isn’t really all that serious about it. He’s like: alright, we might have lost their lives, whatever. But, however, the other one is dead serious about it, and is trying to explain to him how bad the results could have been. Probably let a third character be completely dismissive; he’s like: ah, what nonsense, we’d have never lost our lives.
Now, you have opposite powers in your scene. Now your scene is ready to be written and presented to the readers.
This discussion might not push the story forward in a literal sense, y’know, but it has a really important part to play: showing a part of each character. This law, therefore, also helps you show differences between your characters and their attitudes.
***
#02. Setting
However, as you would have guessed, it’s not always possible. You can’t let your characters argue with each other all the damn time, y’know. That just doesn't make sense. And what if the characters in question are good friends, or have similar attitudes? What do you do then?
Well, guys, this is where I show you another application of my law of opposing powers.
The thing is: the opposing powers shouldn't have to be your characters’ opinions all the damn time. You can add something more.
For example, let’s suppose your character is in enemy territory. They wanna penetrate deeper inside, but don't know how to. Here’s another pair of opposing powers: your character and their setting.
Yeah, your setting can act as an opposing power too. A scene where the character is struggling—or not struggling, doesn't matter—to know more about the setting means that the setting is a power they need to overcome, y’know. This is how most adventure-fantasy stories remain interesting—exploring the settings plays an important part in these stories.
***
#03. An Easier Way
Well, if you’ve grasped the concept—which I believe most of my students must have by now—you might be wondering how you are even gonna use it. It seems like it’s a tough nut to crack, right? To think about a scene so damn much…
But it doesn't have to be this tough. It doesn't have to be this draining. While writing this blog, I realized that there’s another way that I can use to teach you the Law of Opposing Powers. And that’s through conflict.
Now, stay with me here. I think you all must know what a conflict is, but if you don't, let’s go back to the basics. How do you create a character-arc? You give them a goal, a motive, and a conflict. You can also give your characters several goals, motives, and definitely many conflicts, but for simplicity, let’s assume we give our character just a single goal, a single motive to achieve it, and a single conflict.
Now, what’s a conflict? It’s the opposing power—something that’s stopping your character from achieving their goal. But, it’s a macro-level thing—you unfold the characters’ conflict through several scenes and acts, not just a single one.
For this, I’d urge you to give each scene a micro-level conflict. It doesn't really exist—I made this up. A micro-level conflict is a conflict that resolves within the said scene.
You can see the difference between the characters’ opinions as a micro-level conflict for your main character. Or even exploring a setting can act as one.
***
#04. Application
You might feel that it’s still a tough thing to implement in your writing. And you’re right: adding a micro-level conflict in each scene might be tough. But, if you wanna make it easier, I can give you a little trick.
For each scene, ask yourself what the purpose of the scene is. Why is the scene here? What’s it doing?
Knowing the purpose of your scene can really help bring forward the opposing powers that your scene may hold. Now, all you have to do now is to polish them and make them shine. Easy peasy.
And, if your scene doesn't have a purpose, give it one. Before beginning each scene, you can just define what you want out of this scene. How it’s gonna end. Defining all that would really level up your writing.
***
#05. Conclusion
I hope the Law of Opposing Powers would help you guys in your writing. I came up with this idea when I was discussing about writing with a friend of mine.
Man, discussions about writing with other writers can really help you gain some insights, y’know. Even I don't know how I reached this idea—I just did. And probably this is the magic of talking about writing.
That’s why I’d never stop yapping about writing.
Anyway, that’s it from my side. See you guys later!

Wie schön, dass du geboren bist || michael kaiser/reader
summary; you were nothing but a constant mockery, tormenting him. he hated you more than anything, and the fact that he was nothing but entertainment to you, made it somehow even worse. Or: Michael Kaiser gets a birthday present.
tags; sfw, psychological, character study, reader is about as mentally stable and nice as Kaiser is, they match each others freak
author’s note; hiya! first time writing and posting anything on here! been sucked back into blue lock among other things and I do have some stuff saved up! This is but one instalment with this particular reader, with more to come!
->the title and story itself is inspired by a german happy birthday song, roughly translating to “how beautiful that you were born, otherwise we would have missed you very much”
“What the fuck is this supposed to be?”, Kaiser asked, clutching the poorly wrapped package between his hands, an annoyed look in his eyes.
“Try thinking about it, I know it’s hard for you”, you cooed, shaking your head as you rested your hands on your hips, “It’s a present duh.”
“I don’t want it.”
“Yes you do.”
“No I don’t. I don’t need your pity.”
“When have I ever done anything for anyone out of pity?”
That was true actually. You weren’t exactly the easiest person to get along with, even if it was rich coming from him.
You were truly an enigma Kaiser could not quite wrap his head around. Psychologists would have a field day with you no doubt.
“You only get one though. Sucks you are born the day after Christmas. Don’t worry though, I made sure it’s more to accommodate for it.”
Kaiser held the box in his hands. It was light, wrapped in obnoxious green Christmas paper, a red bow adorning the package. The exterior seemed to be put together to the best of your abilities which… wasn’t a lot it seemed.
He looked back at you. He was almost expecting an anticipated look in your eyes, hoping he would unpack the gift, as you had dubbed it, but your face was unreadable and your smile as unnerving as always. There was something about the way you never acted quite how he thought you would that unsettled him deeply.
“I am not opening this”, Kaiser said, waving the present dismissively.
“I know. I am not asking you to open it.”
Your response only further cemented his lacklustre opinion of you.
“What the fuck is this even supposed to mean?”, Kaiser sighed, feeling a headache forming.
“It’s a philosophy I follow”, you explained, “whether you follow along with it is irrelevant.”
“So you are doing this for yourself?”
“Yes.”
“How selfish.”
“Absolutely.”
It was silent for a moment as Kaiser turned the present in his fingers.
“You want to know”, you pointed out, the grin on your lips widening.
“I don’t care.”
“You do. This is going to give you sleepless nights. Do not fret, I am a merciful god.”
Somehow, Kaiser doubted that.
“It is a celebration you know?”, you elaborated, closing the gap between you two. Kaiser didn’t flinch nor move back, but the anxious, pathetic lump forming in his stomach whenever you were around was certainly there, frustratingly enough.
He didn’t respond. ‘What for?’, you could almost read in his fixated gaze, watching your every move with great interest.
“It’s a thank you”, you said, voice dropping lower, more serious tone, “For being born. Otherwise, you would have been missed very much.”
The lamp atop his table burst into a million pieces as he harshly moved back, hitting the table, a bewildered, angry look in his eyes. You didn’t flinch. You were analysing him, gauging for some sort of reaction surely, like he was some sort of lab rat for you to study, he was sure of it.
“You are such a fucking weirdo. Leave me alone.”
You continued to smile. Your lips curved upward, as if permanently tattooed on your stupid face, gauging for his reaction.
Kaiser hated you. He hated how his heart lurched at your carefully crafted words. Your silver tongue lulled people into a state of perpetuate ease. He had no doubt that this was part of the reason you were where you were today.
“You are a fucking sociopath.”
“Would it make you feel better if I was?”, you countered, your eyes flittering from his face to the broken lamp on the ground, kneeling down to collecting the shards to the best of your ability.
“Why would that make me feel better?”, Kaiser sneered, the wrapping crumpling under his fingers. Whatever was inside would surely be destroyed by now. By him. As per usual.
“Because then it would be easier for you Michi!”
“Easier?”
“Of course! You don’t think you are capable of being someone that can be loved after all”, you stated, casually, as you rose back to your feet, your eyes finding his again. Unreadable as always, with that goddamn smile on your lips, an eternal limbo between honesty and dishonesty that made Kaiser want to hide,”So perhaps that would make it easier for you no? If I was, I mean. Then you could chalk it up to me being crazy.”
His reactions entertained you like no other. You loved the way his face scrunched up. He was about to cry, no doubt, but he would never let himself cry. There was murder in his eyes too, oh he wanted you dead, how amusing.
“Leave.”
His tone was quiet, but dead serious nonetheless.
“Of course”, you beamed brightly as you moved to the door, carrying the large shards with you, Kaiser still frozen in place, gift in his hands. Oh he looked ready to murder you. How endearing.
You turned back, lingering in the doorway for a moment, for a mere second, you let your facade drop. Your voice was soft, devoid of your usual playfulness, almost genuine, not that he believed you were capable of that, truly capable of that.
“I love you Michael. Happy Birthday.”
The door closed with a soft thud. Kaiser exhaled shakily, eyeing the package for a moment before throwing it into his closet.
Oh, how he despised you.

Alright!~ OP posted this and didn’t elaborate further so I raise to you all, Aventurine nation—my perspective on this. Because I have a very normal obsession with both Aventurine along with overanalyzing characters. Also this was partly inspired by some Pinterest posts I also saw that displayed some. Uhm. Interesting perspectives on Aventurine!!! (Did those people even play his story??? Or know anything about him????)
Also. Because everything needs a disclaimer; this is only my personal opinion on Aventurine as a character, please don’t burn me at at the stake guys/lh
Aventurine’s narrative defies easy labels. Rather than embodying the extremes of an “evil, sleazy capitalist” or a “helpless, innocent victim,” his story is a study in dehumanization—and a plea for recognizing complexity in a character who has long been treated as nothing more than a tool.
(⬆️ how I feel breaking out this essay btw) ୧ ׅ𖥔 ۫ Beyond Simple Archetypes ⋄ 𓍯
Both common interpretations strip Aventurine of his humanity. Labeling him an evil capitalist reduces his actions to ruthless ambition, ignoring the calculated risks he takes—a gamble against the unjust fate that secured his high-ranking role in the IPC’s Strategic Investment Department. On the other hand, seeing him as merely a victim in need of rescue overlooks the agency he displays—he’s not a Disney Princess. His decisions are not born from weakness but from a horrific past that forced him into a role where every move is dictated by survival and self-preservation. (pun intended)
୧ ׅ𖥔 ۫ A Life Defined by Objectification ⋄ 𓍯
Central to his backstory is the relentless objectification he has endured. From his earliest days, Aventurine was not seen as a person with hopes and sorrows but as an instrument—a means to generate profit or serve a strategic purpose within a corporate machine. He was so incredibly dehumanized even before his involvement with the IPC— he was a slave. This treatment has left him with a duality: outwardly, he wears a constant smile and an air of frivolity, yet internally he grapples with feelings of worthlessness and betrayal.
This internal conflict is precisely what the story quest(s) seek to address by highlighting his hidden, multifaceted humanity.
୧ ׅ𖥔 ۫ The Human Cost of Simplification ⋄ 𓍯
When people reduce Aventurine to a single archetype—either villain or victim—they erase the very struggle that defines him. Such reductive views ignore his tactical brilliance, his conscious decisions in the face of systemic exploitation, and his painful awareness of how others have used him. The quest that forces him to confront his past and embrace his own humanity is not just a turning point in the narrative—it is a direct counter to these dehumanizing labels. By emphasizing his complexity, the story challenges the audience to see beyond the surface and to understand that his actions, however ruthless they might sometimes seem, are rooted in a lifetime of being seen as an object rather than a person.
୧ ׅ𖥔 ۫ Conclusion ⋄ 𓍯
Aventurine’s character is a testament to the tragic consequences of reducing a person to an archetype. Neither the callous capitalist nor the pitiful victim captures the full picture. His story compels us to acknowledge the inherent dignity of a man who has been exploited and misunderstood for so long, urging us to look at him with empathy and to appreciate the intricate web of experiences that shape every decision he makes.
Alright—I’ll stop yapping now. Thanks for reading this long thing guys! Also; props to OP for posting this.. it was fun to write this. Reverie out! 🫶
is aventurine an evil, sleazy capitalist?
or is he a helpless, innocent victim in need of saving?
actually, he is neither and that is exactly the point of his story. both are dehumanizing to him and this goes against his character because he has been treated as an object rather than a person his whole life, despise the fact the story quest highlights his humanity to prove the men from his past wrong . failing to see aventurine empathetically, as a complex human being goes against his character because that is who he is IN THIS ESSAY I WILL
#I love this man sm#its crazy#there are two people alive who know exactly why (yall know who you are.)#Wondering if I could ever submit this as a school paper#Guys what do you think?/j#If only we put this much effort into actually important work that defines our future… (◞‿◟)ʃ#Anyways#・┆✦ʚ ❝ Divine Scripts; Analyses❞ ɞ✦ ┆・#・┆✦ʚ ❝ A Reflection in Celestial Glass; Aventurine ❞ ɞ✦ ┆・#・┆✦ʚ ❝ Eclipsed Scripture; Honkai: Star Rail ❞ ɞ✦ ┆・#Aventurine#aventurine honkai star rail#aventurine hsr#aventurine fanart#honkai star rail#honkai star rail fanart#hsr#penacony

In which Stone sort of has a daughter and Ivo and her are not getting along
so I've talked about this fic I started writing back when the first movie came out and since a few people seem interested I decided to post what I wrote back then to test the water
on the base concept this fic is supposed to be stobotnik but this first part doesn't even has Stone in it, as it is only the first encounter between Robotnik and the kid
it's also not supposed to be the first chapter and it's short but that's all I got the motivation to write back then and it's been 4 years so I'm just, I'm gonna post it now cuz that's long enough okay, we will see how it goes later 😭
for context this takes place after the first movie and will only be canon-compliant up to that point
also uh cw r slur??? idk I don't condone the characters' language but it's there
tagging @thebadevil @alexcole1326 and @nosebleedy99 'cause you commented on the other post
- Meanwhile a few months latter on the mushroom planet -
The Doctor was looking for a way on a tricky path, a collapsing old mushroom cap he needed to step on in order to reach a better point of view, when his appliances went insane: there was some dimensional shit going on. He heard a big crack, like thunderbolt, then the dimentional fluctuation faded away.
Maybe two hours latter he heard something again, but something small, something he hadn't heard in a long time. It was not the wind, not the mushrooms growing, not his own breath, not Agent Stone rolling away. It was something that moved by itself, something alive, something animal. It was footsteps.
He was prepared for anything, really, he was prepared for humans, talking blue hedgehogs, other feaking rainbow animals, dinosaurs that would try to eat him... He was ready, and ready to fight for his life if necessary! What he wasn't really expecting though was a child in some kind of safety suit shaped like a dress? With a lot of shiny technological device attached here and there. He didn't get to see their face a lot but based on its proportions and the way it was standing it was obviously a human child, or a weirdly humanoid shaped alien, because as far as Robotnik knew the probability of an alien species to evolve in the exact same way as human, if statistically possible, was very low, and the probability to encounter it even lower.
The child glanced at him for a second and didn't even look up from the touchscreen tablet in their hands when they addressed him:
"I am looking for a human man who was known on his home planet, Earth, as Dr. Ivo Robotnik. Would you appear to 1) know English and 2) have seen a human looking quite like you, in that the human male standard shape and size are similar to yours. He should have a pale skin and dark hairs, and apparently a 'glorious mustache'?"
For once he didn't really know what to say, it only took half a second for him to remember how to register English words but the kid was faster and after a jaded sigh they resumed: "Nǐ huì shuō pǔtōnghuà ma? Kya aap hindee bolate hain? ¿Hablas español? Hal tatahadath alearabiatu? Tumi ki bān-"
"YES I do speak English, and other language stoo, thank you very much. Who are you and what are you doing here anyway?"
"I am here to find the Dr. Ivo Robotnik, I have already said that. Are you retarded or something? If you are don't worry I can explain things again, more slowly, I am trained for that."
"I AM, Dr. Ivo Robotnik," he said, trying very hard not to break the child's neck. "I know you're looking for me, what I'm asking is why? Who are you and who sent you here? No. You know what in fact I don't care who you are. I just want to know who sent you. Which government or secret agency, that sort of thing."
The mildly disgusted and doubtful facial expression they made as they were double-checking his appearance was speaking volumes about their internal thoughts.
"I have no more time to dedicate to you. I'm a very busy person and searching for you already wasted far more of my precious time than you deserve. All you need to know is that a very important person want you and you will follow me now if you don't want me to make use of force."
And on that, the child turned their back to him and disappeared behind a mushroom.
Great. One of those child genius who thought they were above everyone else just because they worked for a random government. He should know, he was one of them. But that kid would learn soon enough what their real place was: down below.
He still followed them though, because they looked like they knew a way back and, well, even if he was smart enough to find a way by himself, thank you very much, the sooner he could beat that hedgehog the better it was. Also, he could just kill them after learning whatever device brought them here and no one would know.
–––
Soon they arrived to a more open area. The child seemingly took measurements, they walked around taking notes on their pad for a few minutes then stopped.
"Come here," they said while pointing the ground. "Don't move."
They took a device from their bag, some kind of tripod filled with wires and LEDs, and placed it on the ground. They stepped back and typed on their screen some more.
The tripod beeped and light beams came out of it, scaning the mushroom cap they where standing on. A dozen of flat devices escaped from the bag and and went to place themselves on strategic points marked by the beams.
The child then placed what looked like a power cell in the tripod. That blue glow emanating from it, could it be... But he had no time to think about it, lights amplificated by stimulated emission of radiation came out of the tripode and to the discs, reflecting into the others, and soon the whole place was illuminated. Reality torn open for the second time this day in a deafening din.
When he oppened his eyes again a ring, looking almost exactly like the one that brought him here, was now open on the ground before him. Almost, because it looked like it opened on a room specifically equipped for that purpose, and with the whole procedure to activate it, it could only mean it was a more primitive technology.
The Doctor looked up at the child, who was scrutinizing him for his reaction.
"I bet you didn't do that yourself, it looks just like this creature's gold rings portals," he said with a smirk.
"Yeah of course," responded the child with spite, "it's reverse engineering."
"Lame."
"Well at least I'm not stupidly stuck on a damn mushroom planet like an idiot. I favour efficiency upon ego, that's why I am here saving your ass and you are pathetically crawling over there covered in mushroom goo. Now, you will have to excuse me..."
They pressed some hiden button in their gloves and Robotnik felt something stinging his neck.
"...but I don't trust you."
The last thing he thought while falling to the ground and through the ring was: "But... That's my tech..."
#soooo... what do you think of it?#i think it's like the second time i post any of my writing in public so im not gonna lie im a little nervous#there was a little more written but it's back on earth so i decided to just cut the 'chapter' in half and focus on that part#i don't have a title yet but im gonna try to think of one#the kid has a couple reasons to hate ivo it's not 100% gratuitous#but you may learn about that in the future 👀#i mean if... if you're interested 👉👈#also you very much can send me asks about this story if you want it might help with motivation maybe?
