Here's what I do that helps me get stuff done on time without stressing myself sick:
Split tasks up into their bare, basic components. Then, make a checklist of each component. Planners are my best friends, because I have an easier time remembering to do something if I write it down.
I find it a lot easier for me, motivation wise, to get through an essay by writing :
"do research/ find sources,
find quotations and create citations,
create an outline,
write paragraph (1,2,3, etc.),
edit rough draft,
create final draft"
because I can check off each little part and still feel like I'm making real, tangible progress vs. just putting down "turn in essay by (deadline)" in my planner.
Then, figure out what's the absolute *bare minimum* you need to do each day (or any other incriment of time that fits your schedule) to meet your deadline. Whatever it is, make sure to add an extra day or two as padding, so you can meet that deadline even if something comes up. Don't be afraid of asking for extensions or setting up accomodations. Be realistic with your limitations and time constraints.
For example: I have 5 hours of lecture I need to get through over Thanksgiving break to meet a deadline. Over 6 days, I need to watch at least 45 mins of a lecture each day. For me, 45 of lecture time is doable over a day because I know I dont have to do it all in one sitting. Realistically, I know it will take me anywhere from 1-5 hours to watch and take notes for these 45 minutes of lecture, because I am preemptively assuming I will need to take some breaks in between.
Breaks: when I get bored, I dont fight it. Instead, I take time to pivot. This is particularly helpful when I find myself doing something I have no interest in, and my brain does not for any reason want to let me do it. I take the time to scroll aimlessly, but also to get a drink/eat/use the restroom. I'm actually writing this while on a hw break right now. And when I get back from my break, all my stuff is in the same place where I left it at my desk, so I have a much better time easing my way into being productive again. If I still don't wanna work on what I was before, I start working on something relatively quick & easy from my to do list that I *do* want to do and ride the wave of productivity I get from finishing that.
The last part: reward yourself for the small victories. Yes checking things off a to do list is fun, but so are stickers. My planners are FULL of gold stars, smiley faces, and cute character stickers. There's a reason teachers use them, they are amazing motivators.
There's a bunch of adhd advice out there that's like "people with adhd tend to work better under deadlines due to the anxiety so here are ways to artificially induce a stress response in order to get you to get work done" and it's like well what if I don't want to be stressed out all the time in order to function
#actually adhd#study tips#sry for hijacking ur post op#but i went from almost failing all classes senior year of highschool to being on the deans list once i figured out something that worked#the chronic illness made me reevaluate how much unnecessary stress i placed on myself & work towards fixing that which also helped my adhd#long post

Tummy ache
Do I have kids? No. Do I want kids? Fuck no. Did I still write this because dad logan makes me feel a certain type of way? HELL YES
Pairing: Worst!Logan x single mom!Reader
Summary: It's late and your little daughter Laura won't stop crying and screaming, no matter what you do. You take her to your best friend Wade, who lives in the same apartment buildung. Will he and Logan be able to help you?
Wordcount: 3.4k
Warning/tags: english is not my first language, fluff, slight missunderstandings, Wade bc he needs a warning, implied sexual themes, friends to lovers, just cuteness, Laura doesn't exists as an adult like in the movie, rushed ending?, leave me alone I finished this at midnight
__________________________________
Logan was snoring on the couch in Wades apartment when loud, frantic knocks sounded on the door. He grumbled in annoyance as he turned, pulling a pillow over his head.
He heard Wade skip to the door in a pair of white underpants with hearts on them and a loose, grey wolverine fangirl shirt. "Must be the horse dildo I ordered" he spoke happily as if it was the most normal thing to say. Once Wade opened the door, the piercing shrieks of a baby crying echoed through the apartment.
You held your one year and a half old daughter in your arms, her face red as she cried into your shoulder. Wade noted that your hair was a mess and you seemed awfully tired. Well- it was late and on any other day, you and your daughter would already be sleeping. But there was clearly something that bothered her. She had been crying and screeching and in discomfort for an hour without you finding what caused it or how to fix it.
You tried feeding her, but she wouldn't open her mouth for the spoon. You tried reading to her, but she would always push away the books. You changed her diapers in case her sensitive skin was irritated by the dampness, but she hadn't peed. You didn't know why she was so distressed and nothing seemed to distract her from whatever it was that made her cry.
You were desperate. And while your best friend Wade wasn't really...fond of kids, which you couldn't blame him for, you still went to him for help. You never truly wanted kids yourself. But when the condom broke and your ex left you upon finding out you were pregnant, you were stuck with your baby. And now you wouldn't trade her for the world. Except in times where she was screaming with no appearant reason. "Hey Wade, I'm so sorry to bother you guys this late at night, but Laura, she won't stop crying. I've tried everything and I don't know what to do" you croaked, rocking the small child in your arms, shushing her to no avail.
Wade brought you inside so you wouldn't stay outside in the hallway any longer. No need for some neighbors to peek their head out of their doors to see what was going on.
In situations like these, Wade could be oddly serious and actually tried to help. He knew you were insecure because of your baby. You didn't want to be a nuisance or burden to anyone because you knew that your daughter could be a lot. Kids were high maintanance and you didn't want to make people feel like they were obligated to make room and drop everything once you arrived with your child. You couldn't expect from anyone that they were okay with you bringing your kid over. But Wade wanted you to know that even though he didn't like kids, you were his best friend and Laura had been nothing but a sweetheart so far. You were always welcome in his apartment.
Wade kicked Logan from the couch "Get your fat ass off the couch, the Lady needs a place to sit" he loudly said over Lauras crying. Logan groaned. You sat on the sofa and tried to take up as little space as possible. "Im sorry Logan, didn't want to disturb your sleep." you apologized meekly. "I can..I can move to the chair here" you muttered, pointing to an uncomfortable-looking wooden chair that replaced an armchair, which had recently been thrown out of the apartment due to mysterious stains and various rips and cuts in the fabric.
You had met Logan a few times since he lived with Wade and Althea. And you would be a liar if you said he didn't catch your eye. He was tall, broad and very handsome, pretty much right up you alley. But there was no way he was looking for a chaotic single mother that barely had her life together and struggled to raise an unplanned child because her ex left her. Yeah, no. You were miserable. Logan didn't need any of that.
Adding to that, he always seemed to avoid you when Laura was near. You just thought he didn't like kids, which was totally fair. Truthfully, Logan liked kids and had always wanted some of his own, but it just...never happened. With him being the worst wolverine and all.
Then why did he avoid you and your baby?
Simply said, he didn't want to scare her. Most kids looked at him like he was some sort of big, bad monster. Some ran away, some started crying, others hid from him behind their parents when he walked by. He wasn't good with children either because they never let him close enough before getting scared. He was afraid that Laura would react the same way like all children did. He didn't want you to back away once you realised that Laura didn't approve of him.
He couldn't bear only seeing you from afar.
As you were about to stand up from the couch, Logan stopped you. "No, its fine. Stay on the couch. I can move" he replied and you felt another pang as he moved away from you again.
Wade leaned over the couch, looking down at Laura who was still wailing uncontrollably. You sighed deeply, a throbbing ache behind your eyes. "Why won't you stop crying? What's wrong, sweetheart?" you nearly sobbed as well. You were so tired of this, so tired of this sound. You felt so helpless and stupid. "Maybe she wants some food? We have some left-over pizza, I can grind that stuff up into a slurry for her or something" Wade suggested.
You softly shook your head. "She doesn't want to eat, I tried. I also tried to read her a bedtime story, but she just push me away. I also changed her diapers but nothing helped" you rasped, ready to just fall asleep on the spot.
Wade reached down to get your crying daughter out of your arms. "How about you get some sleep while Wolvie and I take care of Laura? Maybe we'll find out what's rubbing her the wrong way." Wade said, cooing to your crying baby. You fell onto the couch, closing your eyes. "I can't just sleep when she is crying" you mumbled, clearly deadly tired.
"We'll take care of her. You go sleep" Logan drawled and his deep voice soothed you even more, made you even more sleepy. It was so easy to let your body betray your mind and you hated it. "Okay..." you whispered, too tired to argue. And before you could snuggle into the couch cushions, you felt two strong arms slip under your body and lifting you up as if you weighted nothing. You were so tired, you couldn't even gasp or protest as Logan brought you into Wades room, your senses enveloped with his scent.
He carefully lowered you down onto the matress, covering you up with a blanket. "Sleep tight, love. We'll take great care of your little one, so you don't have to worry about a thing" he drawled softly and only after closing the door behind him did he hope that you hadn't catched his slip-up, that he had called you love.

In had been another two hours of constant crying and screaming. The kid must be exhausted from all the crying, but she still didn't stop. If you asked Logan, it became even worse.
"God, can you shut up for a minute? I am trying everything here!" Wade stressed, bouncing Laura in his arms and patting her back. "Don't tell your mom I said that" he whispered right after. Laura wailed and pushed herself away from Wade with her tiny hands, which were surprisingly really strong. She squirmed in his grasp, desperate to be set down.
"This is how you thank me? I've worked my ass off the past hour to get everything to your liking and now you push me away?" he grumbled, but set her down with a loud 'ouch!' after she started to scratch him.
Her tiny feet waddled against the livingroom floor as fat tears rolled down her chubby cheeks. She had a tummy ache, but she couldn't communicate that with anyone. There were a few words she knew and could say- cat, dog, mama. But she didn't have the words to say that something was hurting.
Logan sat on the couch and watched her as she stood a few feet away from him with her red face, screaming together the whole neighborhood. He sighed deeply, the sound making his ears ring. Then, out of nowhere, she waddled over to him.
"No, no, bub. Not a good idea. Get back to uncle Wade" he told her, scooting up the couch a bit more. He could have just stood up and walk away- why didn’t he? Laura stood between his legs now, demanding uppies from him as she cried. Logan shook his head, ready to call Wade from the kitchen, when Laura began screetching, stretching herself to Logan, standing on her small tip toes.
With a huff, he picked her up, his big and warm hands eveloping her small body. He leaned back against the couch with her on his lap. To his surpise, she quieted down. "You okay now, bub?" he asked her, jumping as she snuggled herself against his chest. Due to his mutation, Logan was always very warm. His whole body was like a heater and that warmth soothed Lauras tummy ache, unbeknownst to him.
The apartment was quiet now, only a few hiccups and sighs coming from Laura as she let her stomach ache be washed away by Logans cozy warm body. He didn't know what to do! One minute he was tortured by her screams and now she was napping on him. On him! Out of all people, she chose to rest on him.
"Is she dead!?" It was now Wades turn to yell as he came stumbling into the kitchen because it suddenly went all quiet. Logan didn't answer him nor did he move a muscle, too scared to wake your baby up.
"What the fuck" Wade blurted out upon seeing something he had never thought he would ever witness in his entire life. Logan shushed him, making Wade frown. He came closer, his face next to Lauras sleeping one "You little cheating slut" he sharply whispered, earning himself a shove from Logan. "Seriously, did you knock her out? Why is she sleeping all of a sudden?" Wade asked with crossed arms.
"I don't know. She wanted me to pick her up, so I did. Then she stopped crying and fell asleep" Logan explained, a warm feeling spreading in his chest as he watched the slow rise and fall of Lauras breath, her tiny hand tightly holding onto his shirt.
"Wow" Wade said. "You're the baby whisperer" Logan shot him a glare.
Wade went on a rant about how everything would have been easier if Logan took Laura from the start before finally falling asleep draped over the chair, leaving Logan alone with his thoughts. For a moment, Logan thought about bringing Laura to you so she could sleep with her mom. But as he tried to peel her off of him, she started fuzzing and whimpering until she was laying back on his chest.
He sighed deeply. Well, gotta make the best of the situation, huh? With a grunt, he made himself comfortable on the couch and fell asleep with a broad hand securily holding Laura on top of him.
~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~
You woke up well rested. Weird. You haven't slept this good since Laura had been born.
Laura!
You jumped awake, stumbling over some stuff in Wades room before you reached the door. It was quiet as you opened it and you were met with the sight of Logan, the fucking Wolverine, sound asleep with your daughter cuddled up on him as if he was some kind of big teddy.
Your heart soared in your chest, your stomach did flips and summer saults. And your pussy throbbed. Couldn't help it, seeing him with your baby did something to your ovaries. It was...so cute. You wanted nothing more than to snuggle up with them, trace patterns onto his pecks while Laura would squeak out an adorable smile-
"Mama" Laura squealed suddenly, flashing you a smile with her few teeth. "Hey there, baby" you cooed to her, kneeling down next to the couch to be eye-level with her. She smiled brightly, whatever it was that had bothered her yesterday completely forgotten. "You seem happy using uncle Logan as a pillow" you said to her, kissing her chubby cheek.
Logan started waking up, only registering Laura at first. "You slept well, bub?" he muttered with a deep sleep laced voice, gently rubbing Lauras small head with his large hand that easily fitted around the back of her head.
"Yes, I did. Thank you for asking" you giggled softly, amused by the way Logan nearly jumped out of his skin upon noticing that you were there too, witnessing how he went soft for your daughter. An embarrassed blush krept onto his face and he cleared his throat, sitting up and avoiding your gaze. "Sorry, she...she only stopped crying when she sat on my lap"
You smiled softly at him. "Seems like she really likes you, then." and I like you too, you wanted to add, but didn't. "She is usually not that touchy with people she barely met" you said and hearing your reassurance- the fact that Laura seemed to like him- it warmed his heart. But he would never admit that.
"Well, I guess I'm flattered" Logan replied with the hint of a smile, his gaze soft as you lost yourself in his eyes, Lauras babbling fading into the background. For a moment, you let yourself think about what could have been. This baby, it could have been Logans and yours. She could have been born because two people truly loved each other. Did Logan love you? You doubted it. But when he looked at you like that, you allowed yourself to be fooled.
"I don't know how you manage to fuck each other just with your eyes, but get a room. There are children present" Wade suddenly said outraged, covering Mary Puppins eyes.
You picked up Laura from Logans lap, holding her against your hip to bring distance between you, Logan and Wades teasing. Logan cleared his throat, clearly disappointed.
"I am so, so thankful that you guys helped me. I don't know what you did or what was wrong with her, but she seems all better now. Is there anything I can do to show my gratitude? you asked, gently bouncing Laura in your arms.
Logan shook his head "No need, bub" he grumbled in his deep voice. He would have done this a thousand times if it meant he could hold your baby in his arms as if it was his. "Make that creamy ass mac and cheese and my life is yours. That stuff tastes and sounds better than any pussy" Wade chimes in, making you laugh. You promised to invite both of them over for dinner sometimes this week and they happily agreed. Laura squeaked out a cute "bye!" before you went back to your own apartment again.
~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~☆~
Ever since that day, visits to either Wades or your apartment became more frequent and Laura couldn't be happier seeing Logan pretty much every day. She would stick to his leg from the minute she saw him and to the last second before he left. It was adorable and made you fall even deeper in love with someone you could never have.
Wade made it his mission to steal Laura away from you and Logan. Partly because he wanted you to spend more time alone, and to teach her some words since he was her 'uncle' after all.
Laura sat on his lap, staring down at Wades phone. He looked over her head. He had a picture open that showed you, Laura, Logan and Wade. "And who is that?" he pointed to you, earning a delighted squeal from Laura as she pointed to your smiling face on the picture as well "Mama!" she babbled. Wade cheered her on, applauding her. "That's right, and that is Dada. Dada" he pointed to Logan. Laura recognized him, smiling brightly and giggling, but she didn't say anything. "Can you say that? Dada?" Wade asked in the best baby voice he could muster. But still, Laura wouldn't say anything. "Come on, say Dada. Da-da" Wade tried one last time, but Laura unwrapped himself from his arms to go and play with some toys scrattered on the floor. He huffed in frustration. It was easier to teach kids swear words than this.
Two days later, the day for the dinner came and someone rang your doorbell. You left Laura to play on her playmat and went over to the door, opening it a slit before realising that it was Logan. You fixed your hair with flushed cheeks, you hadn't expected him to come this early, you had just started the dinner preperations. "Oh, hey Logan. What are you doing here? Dinner was planned in two hours" you said, gingerly letting him into your apartment which you hadn't had the time to tidy up yet. Logan wasn't the guy to judge, but you still felt insecure.
"I thought I'd help you with the cooking and all. Look after Laura so you can work in peace" he said, knowing that he was just here to spend more time with you and Laura alone to give him the feeling of having his own little domestic family that he will never actually experience.
You smiled at him "That's very nice of you, but Laura is actually being very umcomplicated today" speaking of which, you showed him that your kid was silently playing with her toys. Upon noticing you and Logan, she squealed and stood up slowly, trying to keep her balance, before she waddled up to him excitedly. "There's my little pumpkin" he drawled, bending down to pick her up swiftly.
"Dada!" she giggled, making you an Logan stop in your tracks. "Did you hear that?" he asked you, looking over at you with a shocked expression. You frowned. You had never taught her to say that. "Sweetheart, who is that?" You asked the little girl, tapping Logans arm, just to be sure you hadn't heard her incorrectly. "Dada" she squeaks again, playing with his coarse beard.
You both looked at each other in disbelieve and for a second, you feared Logan woulf shove Laura into your arms and leave. "Look, I'm sorry. I don't know where she got that from" you tried to apologize, but the rejection from Logan never came.
He held her lovingly to his chest, giving her forhead a kiss. It made your heart pound faster. "No, it's okay" he reassured you, his large hand enveloping the back of Lauras head. "I...I could be her dad. If you want me to be" his question struck you like lightning, it was like a damn marriage proposal.
A marriage proposal you would never say no to. He looked at you with hopeful eyes, waiting for your answer and worrying he had overstepped.
"Yes. Be the father she never had. And please be the love I always wanted" you whispered, leaning up to kiss him. The kiss was soft, your lips brushing against the other and it was nothing you had ever felt before. You had kissed your ex- but never did it feel like this. So right. His free hand snaked around your waist, deepening the kiss until Laura decided to pull at your shiny necklace.
You smiled at her, taking her into your arms. "Do you want to play with daddy while I make mac and cheese?" you asked your daughter and minutes later, Logan had brought her playmat and some toys into the kitchen to sit beside her on the ground to watch and entertain her. It was like nothing had changed. Little did you know, Logan had accepted the little girl as his daughter way before today, even if you guys had never confessed.
And as you stole glances down to Logan, who was already looking at you with these half lidded bedroom eyes, you knew that after dinner, Logan and you would be trying for Lauras sibling.

Grassland Romance AU: Winter Winds
Summary: You've been slowly falling in love with Sylus, a strange outsider who joined your tribe some time ago. You haven't been able to pluck up the courage to say anything. However, when you are caught alone in the fiercest blizzard anyone can remember, it might not be up to you anymore.
AO3
CW: AFAB reader, no use of y/n, pet names (sweetie, little huntress), blizzard, hypothermia, hunting, nude spooning, 90% fluff by volume, sexual themes (but no sex), not proofread, melodrama (god so much melodrama).
Word count: 8k
Notes: poor Luke and Kieran have to be dogs in this AU.
“Don’t be stupid,” you scoff, “how can lemmings foretell the weather? Their brains are the size of grass seeds!” The bay mare you’re sitting astride shakes her head, before pawing through the watery, heavy snow on the ground to reach the hidden grasses underneath.
Today, as with most days, you are minding the herds with your friend Cota. The two of you are practically sisters, as her family had raised you after your parents perished when you were a young child.
“I’m not the one who said it!” She protests, leaning back to aim a kick at your foot succeeding at knocking it out of your stirrup. “I’m just telling you what Elder Shikigur said, and he said, ‘There’s too many lemmings moving, there will be a large storm coming.’”
You groan. Blizzards are a continual hazard of grassland winters. Harsh winds are able to scream across the treeless landscape with terrifying fury, tearing through even thick winter deels, and whirling snow into a blinding haze. Preparing for one means rounding up the flocks, reinforcing yurts to hold against wind and snowfall, and digging out of the yurts once the storm is through. They’re critical jobs that need to be done. That is, when the weather actually calls for it.
“It’s practically spring!” You argue, gesturing wildly to the half-melted pasture around the two of you, “It’s so damn warm, that I couldn’t even wear my thickest deel today! I would’ve been covered in sweat!”
Cota shrugs, “I’m just telling you what the elders were gossiping about.”
“Well, regardless of what they say, I’m not taking out my winter deel again until next winter.”
“I bet you would if Sylus asked you to.”
You feel the color rise in your cheeks at the sing-song tease, and the mention of his name.
You aim a return kick at Cota’s leg, but she reins her mare to the side in time to evade you. “I would not! And besides, he’s out with some of the others hunting pheasant, anyway.”
Cota’s smile grows wider, “Oh ho, so you’ve been keeping track of which hunting parties he goes with, huh?”
An irritated groan leaves your throat as your friend laughs. “Aren't you supposed to be heading back about now? I'll tell the elders you've been slacking to sit around and gossip.”
“Aw, don't pout! It's cute, all your pining. You're going to have to do something soon though, otherwise some other girl is going to catch his eye at a festival, and then what will you do?”
“I’m pretty sure you're supposed to be helping with cooking right now, aren't you?”
Cota makes her own irritated groan, “No one likes when I cook anyway!”
“Better that than you sitting here and teasing me.”
She makes a rude gesture at you, and you return it.
"Fine,” she grumbles, “but keep an eye on the weather, okay?”
“Of course, I'll let you know if the lemmings are oracles or not.”
Cota rolls her eyes with a scoff, before reining her horse around and trotting back to the village. It’s good timing, you notice the right side of the herd has started to splinter a bit, and needs to be rounded back in.
As you go about your job, you can’t stop your mind from pondering over your relationship with the strange man.
Sylus had come to the tribe as an outsider a few years ago. Strong and skilled in both riding and archery, he’d been welcomed into the fold immediately, seemingly to his own surprise. His striking appearance had immediately caught many eyes; tall, broad and strong in the chest, with eyes the color of freshly-spilled blood set in a devastatingly handsome face. The one criticism you heard of him was of his curt, reticent nature, that meant he constantly had a severe expression on his face.
Well, almost-constantly.
Within a month after joining the tribe, there had begun to be problems with a particular wolf picking off sheep in the night. It had always seemed to know where to attack, far enough away from any of the herders that it was impossible to reach him in time. It even managed to evade the vigilant Bankhar dogs, who kept constant watch on their flock, and rarely let a wolf’s presence go unpunished. The predator managed to evade everyone. Everyone except Sylus.
It had only taken two nights of Sylus on guard, before he returned in the early morning light, with the giant, tawny corpse of the wolf thrown over one shoulder. He’d managed to kill it, in the dark, with a single arrow to its skull. The entire tribe had celebrated that night; an end to the nights of doubled watches in the dark and lost sheep. Wine and kumis had run freely that night, along with music and dancing in the center of the temporary village.
The wolf’s body had been set aside, to be skinned for the fur and used as linings and blankets to guard against the frigid winter months. Even in death, it still looked fierce, its fur sleek and body corded with lean muscle that reminded you of its killer. You had bent down to examine the bared teeth, sharp and white against the pale flesh of the gums. You reached out to draw your finger over one of the fangs, curious to see if it would be sharp like a knife, or blunt like one of the Bankhar dogs.
“Disturbing the dead?”
The deep voice, close enough to feel against the back of your neck, had you stumbling backwards, and gracelessly falling on your ass. A throaty chuckle came from above your head, and you had looked up to see Sylus, his face smug and scarlet eyes dancing with laughter.
“It doesn’t count if it’s a wolf,” You grumbled, pulling yourself off the ground, “ass.”
His head was cocked to the side as you rose, finger tapping his cheek in mock-thought, “I thought a wolf was supposed to be the father of the first herdsmen? Wouldn’t that make this creature here your cousin?”
“That’s an old story, no one believes that.”
His answering smile was sharp, eyes darkening into a sneer. “Is that so?” He drew closer, close enough that you could feel his breath on your face, and feel the fabric of his deel brushing against yours. The gaze he cast down made you realize what a cornered sheep must feel like in the moments before jaws close around its throat. “I think there’s more of wolves in people than you realize.” His growl was just as deep as the dogs when they scented a threat.
A part of you wanted to shrink down in your boots, make your excuses, and flee. But, a much larger, louder part of you was indignant. How dare this man sneak up on you in the dark, make you fall over in surprise, then have the audacity to growl at you like a beast?
So you had tipped your chin up defiantly, “Better be careful. Apparently even the cleverest wolves get arrows in their heads.”
He had stared at you for a moment. Made a single blink. Then a strange, amused smile curled across his face. “Are you going to be the one to fire it, little huntress?”
“If you don’t back up, maybe I will.”
Sylus chuckled then, backing up a few steps. You released a breath you didn’t know you’d been holding, body thrumming with… anxiety? Excitement? Both? You couldn’t tell. To distract yourself, you turned your attention back to the kill.
“It’s kind of a shame, really. It’s a pretty creature.”
His head cocked to the side again, though the curiosity in his eyes seemed to be genuine this time. “Feeling bad for the predator?”
“He was just trying to live.”
He huffs a small laugh through his nose. “You’re cute.”
“Excuse me?” You look at him, deeply irritated at his patronizing tone.
“Most animals that steal livestock are weak. They’re sick, or injured. Otherwise it just isn’t worth risking the tangle with dogs or people. This one,” he gives the corpse a nudge, “was perfectly healthy. Strong. But instead of using its smarts to take on saiga, or capercaille, it decided to take the easy way out. It never would have stopped, once it knew that it could fool the shepherds.”
You had sighed a little, knowing that in this instance, he was right. “I know. It still seems like a shame. But at least we’ll stop losing so many sheep.”
You had looked up then to find Sylus staring at you with such intensity that you had taken a step backwards. “What?”
He blinked, the intensity dissipating as quickly as a strike of lightning. “Nothing, sweetie.”
“Sweetie?” Your nose wrinkled at the childish nickname.
He gave a small laugh, a mischievous glint coming to his blood red eye, “You feel pity for a predator that would have snapped you up in an instant. It’s very sweet, if maybe a bit naïve.”
“It sounds like something you’d call a toddler.”
“I suppose it does,” the glint was quickly accompanied by an equally mischievous curl to his smirk, “I suppose I’ll have to call you that when you’re acting like a toddler, sweetie.”
“Ugh. Ass.” You’d turned on your heel to return to the fire, trailed by the sound of deep, smug chuckling.
Since then, Sylus always seemed to show up near you, whether you wanted him there or not. And, at least at first, you certainly leaned more towards the former. He had a talent for approaching silently, getting that smugly pleased look from startling you into stumbling or squeaking. He also began to challenge you, goading you into contests or archery, or riding, or throwing knuckle bones. He was nearly impossible to beat, and even on the rare occasions that you won, he had the gall to look completely unbothered by your triumph.
Really, after a few months, you should have hated him.
But in between all of the needling and teasing and challenges, you began to learn more about Sylus. You learned that he enjoyed being out hunting or riding far more than he enjoyed being surrounded by people, even if they were praising him. You learned the long-limbed black stallion he rode when he first encountered your tribe had been declared untamable before Sylus had taken him. When one of the livestock dogs died shortly after having two pups, you even learned that (if he wanted to be) he could be downright gentle. He’d done so well in helping care for the pair, that as they grew, they followed him everywhere and obeyed his every command. All of this new familiarity, so at odds with your first impression of him, had cultivated a quiet companionship between the two of you.
Even more surprising were the moments of softness, startlingly close to affection. When Sylus had sat drinking kumis with you on the new year, and you’d excitedly shared your hopes for what was to come, he listened with a quiet smile. He’d brought you the furs from the wolf he’d killed when you caught a particularly nasty winter cold, and had even insisted you keep it after you recovered. When you met other tribes for trade, he often found you afterwards, giving you some ornament or silk from beyond the grasslands. Despite the fact he’d never admitted to it, you knew that when his two dogs accompanied you out into the grasses to watch the flocks, he’d commanded them to do so.
Maybe most importantly, he’d specifically sought you out to show you a den where wolf cubs were playing in the summer, knowing you’d like to see them tussle.
They’d been adorable, large paws and ears far too big for their fluffy bodies. The two of you had left your horses some yards away and sat down a bit distant from the pups, down wind and silent so as not to give your presence away. For a while you couldn't take your eyes off their energetic forms, tussling in the dust in front of the den, chewing on each others’ ears, yelping and licking when it became too rough. Eventually you'd looked to Sylus to ask him something, but your eyes had fallen on the short, recurve bow at his side.
“You're not going to kill them, are you?” You'd whispered
He raised an eyebrow at you in a wordless question.
You checked quickly to make sure the pups hadn't heard you. Fortunately, they still seemed to be involved in their own games.
“I mean. I know they're wolves. They might eat our flocks when they get older. But, they're just babies.”
He blinked at you, with an odd, expression you couldn't place. He rose soon after, walking silently away from the den. You'd followed him, confused.
“Hey,” you hissed, “What are you doing now?”
“Leaving. One parent or the other would've been back soon to feed them. Then I would've actually had to use this.” He tapped the bow that was now slung over his shoulder.
“Oh.” You murmured, realization dawning, “Is that what you brought it for? If one of the parents came back?”
“I certainly wouldn't have needed it to kill a fragile little pup.” He scoffed. “Besides, there's no use in killing something weak and defenseless. Though it's nice to know just how highly you think of me, sweetie.”
“That's not-” a frustrated noise had escaped you as you struggled for words, “I don't think that of you. It just… others would have done that. To make sure they didn't grow up to prey on our animals.”
He turned to you then, with a gaze that seemed to be searching you, trying to find the truth of something. “And I'm ‘others’ to you?”
“Of course not!”
He arched an eyebrow for the second time that day at the vehemence in your voice.
"You're the strongest warrior we have. And an infuriating opponent. But you're also the person who protects orphaned dogs. And brings me extra furs when I'm sick. And-” you stopped yourself before you could incriminate yourself further, taking a small breath to collect yourself. “You're Sylus. Not… Others.”
There was a small silence between the two of you for a moment, as you walked over the flowing grasses together. The only sound was the occasional waves of wind across the landscape.
It was broken, only slightly, by Sylus repeating those words. “Not others.” He said them quietly, slowly, as though testing out strange words in a new language. When you turned to look at him, you caught a glimpse of a small, soft smile on his face. A look so deeply genuine, and beautifully content, it made your breath catch in your chest.
Things had begun to change after the day with the wolves. You were beginning to come familiar with the slight curve of his smile, his real smile. Instead of your usual irritation, the glint that so often came to his eye when he was planning mischief fanned a wave of warmth in you. You began craving the slight huff of breath he gave when amused with something you’d done. The deep chuckle he sometimes gave when his body drew close to yours made something strange and molten coil in your gut. When he was out hunting saiga, you found yourself unusually sullen and snappish. And when you heard people whooping and clamoring at the return of the hunting parties, you’d be jostling to the front of the small crowd to see him.
You’d started to notice things though, in this time. The gossip among the elders as they cooked about when Sylus would marry, and whose granddaughter would be the lucky catch. The gaggles of women that followed him when he’d practice archery or spectate his races, giggling and blushing. Some of the bolder women would even bring him wine at the fireside and try to curl against him (you wished sometimes that he’d respond with more than amused chuckles at their ridiculousness, though it did produce a gratifying amount of insult in the rejected ladies). Last year at the games, you noticed he’d received pouches from women of every tribe. The smug look he gave you when he’d noticed you glaring at them had been insufferable, and you couldn’t quite force yourself to congratulate him on the numerous offers.
And yet, Sylus remained alone. You didn’t even notice other women entering his yurt (though you’d die before you admitted to watching for such). You didn’t know what you’d do if he did take an interest in someone. The thought of someone else being transfixed by that soft smile in the quiet hours of the night made bile rise in your throat. But there was always the chance that he simply valued his freedom; and being rejected in favor of an ideal you could never match seemed just as nauseating.
You mull over these thoughts as you and your mare round the goats back to the group. Or, at least, attempt to. One of the damn things stubbornly refuses to rejoin the group. You can swear you see defiance in its eyes when it looks at you. Challenging you. Mocking, even. Every time you have it going the right direction, it turns and bolts in a random direction, leaving you and your bay sliding in the slush. You then have to catch back up to it, and start herding it back once more.
You’re an excellent shepherdess, with a keen eye and a skilled hand with a bow. You've rarely lost an animal on your watch, and certainly never on purpose. But at this point, even you are beginning to think that losing one goat would really not be all that bad if it means this one wouldn’t be part of the herd anymore. Besides, a wind is beginning to rise, a cold one that cuts through the previously-warm day like a freshly-sharpened knife. You’re beginning to wonder if maybe the lemmings were smarter than you’d thought.
After one more, particularly long chase, you give in.
“Fine then!” You yell at the animal, which stood watching you with unaffected eyes as it chewed grass, “you want to deal with a blizzard alone? Go ahead! I’ll laugh when you end up as a goat-cicle! Laugh!”
With a huff, you turn your horse about, ready to gallop back to the herd, and start moving them to a more sheltered part of the pasture. The animals, however, have moved further away on their own. You can see the large dark mass of them in the distance, and you feel a slight unease in your gut. You're not sure how much you believe about oracle lemmings, but you know livestock well; They instinctively group up close when bad weather is imminent, and it seems that they are bracing for a storm now.
Even more worrying is the wall of iron-gray clouds you see blowing in. They're advancing rapidly, overtaking the sky at a pace you've rarely seen before. The wind, too, is beginning to blow so furiously it all but screams, whipping any unmelted snow up into the air.
You again feel that unease in your gut. The village is even further than the herd from where you are at the moment. Thanks to the previously warm weather, you're woefully unprepared to weather a blizzard alone. But both your other options are bleak; either try to make it to the village and hope there's not enough falling snow to make you lose your way, or try your luck with the herd and hope their bodies keep you warm enough to make it through. At least if you make it to the village, your survival is guaranteed. The same can't be said of the herd.
You rein your mare toward the direction of the village, just as the first volley of fresh snowflakes batter your face and hands. And despite your own dire situation, you can't help but think of Sylus, out with the other hunters. They may have arrived home already, and even if they haven’t, their chances are good; the men should be able to find protection from the wind and cold in a group. Nevertheless, your gut twists with anxiety. Hunters rarely stay completely together. And even in the few minutes you’ve been galloping towards the village, visibility is worsening. The gusts of wind have turned into blasts, ripping through your deel and chilling you to your bones. The blasts are also heaving the already-fallen snowflakes up to rejoin the fresh ones in the air, and creating moments where the landscape is inscrutable.
Between the moments of furious wind, you can see the outline of the village. Even as your heart pounds with hope at the sight, a needling numbness begins to take hold in your hands, making it difficult to keep hold of the reins. You try to switch hands; tucking one into the overlapping fold of your deel in an effort to keep it warm, before switching to the other. The biting wind, though, is so vicious and unforgiving, that it takes a mere few seconds for whatever warmth one hand has gained to be lost. At the same time, the numbness has taken hold in your feet, making it impossible to distribute your weight properly. The violent shivers as your body tries to warm itself are a further complication.
It only takes one misstep from your mare. One hoof landing on some uneven ground, causing her to stumble. And despite the high-backed saddle, and your best efforts, it’s impossible to keep your seat. You land hard in the snow. It’s soft enough, at least, that you’re pretty sure nothing is broken. Not that it matters much. Lost and alone in the screaming wind, and featureless white storm, you are as good as dead.
It feels like an eternity that you lie there in the snow, body wracked by violent shivers in a last-ditch attempt to survive. Logically you know it can’t have been more than a handful of minutes, since you are still alive and conscious, but time loses its meaning in a situation like this. Everything ceases to exist, save for the horrible wind and the bone-deep, soul-leaching cold. The snow is falling fast, fast enough that it’s already covered you as you try to huddle for a semblance of warmth. You’ve been buried alive, waiting to die as the world around you slowly quiets and darkens.
A morbid part of you wonders if the tribe will find you, once the snow begins to melt. You imagine Cota will insist they stay long enough to find your remains. You hope she doesn’t feel guilty; neither of you could’ve known the storm would come on so fast. Your mind wanders to Sylus, too. Did the hunters make it back home before the storm hit? You pray they did; or at least they were together when the snow began to fall. The thought of Sylus in the same situation as yourself seems impossible. You have to believe it’s impossible. Entertaining any other idea strikes a dread into your heart as cold as your little tomb. You pray instead that he’s made it back, that he is safe, and warm. And, if you’re able to be a little idealistic, perhaps wondering where you are.
Quite suddenly, a sound shatters your quiet morbidity. Stark against the background of shrieking wind, there is a deep bark. Then another, closer. Soon, there is a constant barrage of the noises.
Hope burns bright in your heart. Maybe, just maybe, all is not yet lost.
You try to shift under the snow, trying to claw your way out of your icy grave. But your limbs are trembling so hard, so frequently, that controlling them is near impossible. Worse, your muscles are becoming weak. Soon they’ll be too exhausted to even shiver, much less move the heavy snow that entombs you. Nevertheless, you have to try. You must try. Because if you don’t, your last hope of warmth will move on, and then you will truly be as good as dead.
Your efforts come to a halt when a startlingly loud crunching begins in the snow above and around you. It doesn’t take long before the blanket of snow is lifted from your head, and a warm puff of air greets your face.
You open your eyes. And instead of a blinding white storm, your vision is filled with deep brown eyes set in a furry face as black as night. The same face that Sylus has sent to accompany you on night watches and sunny days alike. You smile at the familiar creature, despite the chattering of your teeth.
“H-hey, boy.” You whisper, your numb hand reaching up to sink into the dog’s deep fur. You can still hear his brother nearby, barking furiously above the wind.
Though Sylus knows them at a glance, you've never been particularly good at telling the two dogs apart by looks. They're both black, with intelligent eyes and powerful frames. In behavior though, they are slightly different. Gerel is louder, and more playful. Khar, though quieter, is definitely the smarter of the two. He's likely the one blocking your body from the worst of the wind, now.
You try to call Gerel over as his brother curls himself around your quivering body, but it’s too hard to draw a deep breath. Instead, you lean against the one lying on you, burying your face and hands against the one reprieve from the cold. You can think of nothing else but how good the slight amount of warmth feels, even as your fingers begin to burn slightly from the frostbite. It is a promising pain, one that feels of returning life rather than looming nothingness. You doubt it will be enough to truly save you, but at least you have some source of comfort now.
Eventually Gerel goes quiet, and you begin to worry he's become lost in the storm as well. You lift your face from Khar's fur, and try again to call his brother, but fail. Khar perks up, though, his massive tail wagging a fan-shaped dent in the snow. Perhaps he can smell his brother on the fierce wind?
A few moments later, you hear it. A deep, commanding voice that cuts through the shrieking wind like a blade, calling your name.
Sylus.
You don’t know why he’s here, or if he’s even real. It may be an illusion conjured by your failing mind and body. It does not matter. Real or not, you must go to him.
You try to draw yourself up, try to call his name, but Khar remains a dead weight on you. You try to shove him, but your muscles are still shaking uncontrollably, making any efforts to dislodge Khar useless.
Please, you think desperately, please, I need to go to him. I need him, I need Sylus.
In the midst of your struggle with the animal laying on you, you very nearly miss the crunching of snow approaching you. Gerel soon appears, fur nearly white with the coating of heavy, wet snow that clings to him. And directly behind him is a sight that would make you weep if you had the breath for it.
It's Sylus. He's battered by the wind and ice as he wades through the fresh snow, only a step behind Gerel. His face bears a sharp, unwavering determination and ferocity that puts even this storm to shame as he wades through the drifts. His eyes, bright scarlet amidst the daunting white, lock onto yours. Only when his master is a single step away from you does Khar finally wiggle himself off of you. The wind immediately rips away all the warmth the dog has lent you. But you feel the loss only for a moment, as in the next breath, Sylus has yanked you bodily out of the snow and crushed you against himself.
“Found you,” his deep voice is quiet, heavy with an emotion you can’t name. And oh, oh, even if this is a dream sent to ease your last moments, you do not care. There is no one you’d rather imagine at your side right now.
He releases you, only slightly, to tug off his own gloves and put them on your trembling hands. The heat that envelopes them makes your skin burn, and a whine that is half-choked by shivers bubble out of your throat.
“Bear with it,” he murmurs, wrapping a thicker, warm deel over your current one, “You won’t be able to beat me at archery if you lose your fingers, little huntress.”
Normally, you would call him an ass, berate him for worrying about losing his archery competitor as he gave you a smug smile for taking his bait. But you can’t. Your mind is foggy, and all you can do is curl into him as he sweeps you up into his arms. You notice briefly that his eyes have narrowed again. He looks… irritated maybe? Angry? You aren’t sure. Before you can think about it for very long, though, you are distracted by a sharp whistle from Sylus, shrill and sharp even over the unending wind. It’s followed by a whinny, as his tall, powerful horse wades through the snow with a determination identical to his master’s.
Sylus walks to meet the horse halfway. He says something, and then suddenly his arm drops out from under your legs. You stumble slightly, knees buckling under your own weight as your boots drop through the knee-high snow. You are strangely surprised when you don't hit the ground, and it takes you a moment to realize that Sylus has a hold on your waist, steadying you.
Oh. He was going to set you down. That's what he had said. Of course.
You look up at him, and find a hard expression on his face. Why does he look angry now? You don’t understand.
His bright eyes bore into your own, cutting through the confusion for a moment. When his voice comes, it is a command, not a request.
“Stay with me.”
You're not sure why he's saying this. It's not like you're going anywhere. All you want right now is to just curl up and sleep, back in his arms, if possible. But you nod anyway.
Sylus swings himself up onto his horse, settling himself behind the canticle. This again confuses you. You're supposed to sit on the seat. Not behind it. But before you can continue puzzling over this, Sylus has bent half-over, wrapped an arm around you once more, and hauled you up against the side of the horse. The pressure of it is uncomfortable, and you try to squirm out of the grasp. Sylus's hold is sure, though, and before you can break it, he's hooked the other arm under your knee, and lifted you up into the seat of the saddle.
You try to brace your legs, to keep your seat as the stallion begins to move beneath you, but your vicious shivers make it difficult to control your limbs, even for an action as instinctive to you as walking. Before you can falter though, Sylus’s arm wraps around you, holding you safe and steady against him.
You do your best to keep your eyes open against the biting wind and freezing snow. But the scant amount of warmth you can feel through the thickness of both your clothes, paired with the movements of the stallion slowed by the snow, is almost hypnotic. And you are tired, oh, so tired.
“You lost this game,” he says, in that damn smug voice that always makes you want to punch his arm.
“Game?”
He gives an affirmative hum. “Hide and seek. I found you, didn't I? That's another victory for me.”
You give a grunt of disgust, still not sure what he's talking about, but irritated by the condescension in his voice all the same.
“Don't be such a sore loser, sweetie.”
You don't know why you're even sitting on the same horse as him.
“A-ass,” you hiss around the waves of shivers. “Sh-should. P-push off.”
The dark chuckle behind you is as alluring as it is infuriating. “I'd love to see you try.”
You do try, for a moment, pushing against his hold. But you are soon frustrated by how clumsy your movements are, and exhausted by the effort. Sylus's tight grip is immovable anyway.
“Seems I'm still on the horse, sweetie.” Comes the singsong mocking from behind you.
You give a grunt in response. You can't be bothered to be angry. All you can feel is the heavy tiredness dulling all your senses.
Sylus says your name, sharply. There's an odd tone to it. You don't care enough to think about why.
You're vaguely aware of being jostled. And then, for a while, you are senseless.
The damn shivering is what wakes you. It's so violent and pervasive that it drives the breath from your lungs, leaving you gasping between the waves of trembling to try and regain it. On instinct, you try to curl into yourself, but are unable to. In fact, apart from the tremors, you can’t move your body at all. You seem to be surrounded by some sort of heavy mass, pressing on every inch of you. You struggle, pushing against the weight near your face to get some breathing room. The mass grunts, then moves away for a moment, freeing your head and upper body. You have only a moment of reprieve from the claustrophobia before…
Something warm, wet, and slimy drags across your face.
“Ur-rgh!” You bring a quivering arm up to rub away the slime.
A deep chuckle rumbles behind you, the breath of it close enough to make warmth fan across the back of your skull, “Is that how you thank Khar for helping to save your life, sweetie?”
Your eyes snap open at the familiar voice; although instead of the carmine eyes and seductive smirk you expect, your vision is filled (for the second time today) by pitch-dark fur and smiling brown eyes set in a distinctly canine face. Right as that same face applies another sloppy lick to yours.
“Kh-khar!” You squeak, bringing your now-free arms up to protect your face from the onslaught of affection. “Th-thanks, but s-stop!”
Khar obediently jumps down from where you’re laying, though he gives you a pathetic whine. A further weight is removed from your lower half when Gerel reluctantly hefts himself off of you to join his brother on the floor, giving you a similarly dejected look.
Without Khar laying on you, you can see more of your surroundings. It’s clear that you’re in a yurt, one that is unfamiliar to you. The only light source is the barely-visible fire crackling complacently in the small stove at the center, leaving much of the place in shadow. Is it night, then? Why are you here? And why do your hands and feet feel like they are burning?
You flex your hands between shivers in an attempt to stop the strange, tingling heat. If anything, that seems to make the feeling sharper, more biting in its ferocity. Shifting them out from underneath a heavy woolen blanket and furs to inspect them gives no answers, given the dim light.
“Can you still feel them?” Sylus’s voice, humorless this time, cuts through the slowly-lifting fog of unconsciousness and confusion.
“H-hurts.”
“Good, that means there’s still life in them. Better than losing such pretty fingers to frostbite.” Memories come to you at the word ‘frostbite’. They are hazy, as though recalling a dream several hours after waking; the dogs finding you in the snow, warming you and guiding Sylus to you through the blinding storm, Sylus carrying you in his arms, and keeping you upright in the saddle before you drifted into unconsciousness.
“Syl-” Your words are cut short. In trying to turn to face him, you realize that his powerful arm is curled around your waist.
Your naked waist. And at your back, you do not feel the rough texture of clothes; but instead the heated, sticky kind of softness of skin on bare skin.
Your body stills in shock; suddenly, you are horribly, wonderfully conscious of every inch Sylus has pressed against you: The firmness of his chest, the sharp jut of his hips, the tangle of his legs around and between yours, and (both the most enticing and mortifying of all) the warm, heavy weight of what must be his cock nestled against your ass.
That damned smug chuckle comes again, “I was wondering how long it would take you to notice. It took you a while; maybe I should be more worried about your head than your fingers, hm?”
You stutter a few times, as your mind comes to terms with your situation, before blurting in a rush, “Where are my clothes, Sylus!? Where are yours!?”
“Ah, you mean our freezing, sopping wet clothes?” His tone is almost sing-song in its blithe news, and bereft of any shame, “I took the liberty of removing them so that you didn't continue freezing to death.”
Somehow, his complete lack of any embarrassment heightens your own, as though your mind has determined to make up the difference between the pair of you. The heated panic in combination with exhaustion, confusion, and desire collide in a nerve-wracking swirl. You scramble wildly to get up, get away from this source of searing, tumultuous emotions. But the movement of your hands makes them burn as you try to gain purchase In the blankets and furs, and his arm around you is immovable as stone. “You- I- Couldn’t you have just thrown a blanket on me or- or something!? Gods, let go!”
He gives a derisive snort. “You would have just frozen to death under a blanket instead of snow. You didn’t have any heat left to trap, so I lent you some of mine. And no.”
“No what?”
“I just risked my life in a blizzard hunting for you, and I’m not about to let all my effort go to waste when I’ve already caught my prize. So, no, I will not be letting you go.”
“This isn’t- Can’t you just put on some damned pants, at least?”
“Hm, I could… but are you sure you want me to?”
“Sylus!!”
He gives a full laugh at your flustered squeak, “Once I’m sure that you’ve completely warmed up, I will. Until then, I suggest you stay still. Unless you’d like me to warm you up a different way. But I’d suggest waiting until your hands have healed.”
He must be teasing, surely. Delighting in your embarrassment as always. Still, a tiny, idiotically hopeful part of you can’t help but wonder… if you were able to see his face right now, would you see a small glimmer of want for you underneath the inscrutable mask? You dismiss the thought quickly. Even if you were able to see his face, you’d only see that damn self-satisfied smirk that makes your stomach twist.
“The elders are going to be insufferable about this,” You mutter, desperate you lay those thoughts to rest. Well, as best as you can, considering Sylus is curled around you.
“So what? Let them talk.”
“Easy for you to say. They won’t say anything to you; you’re the one half of them are looking to marry their daughters off to.” You’re only aware of the venom in your last few words after they’ve already left your mouth. You pray Sylus doesn’t notice.
But of course he does.
“Jealous, little huntress?” You can hear the smile in his voice
“You’re an ass, do you know that?”
“I’m hurt sweetie. I run out into a storm to find my poor, lost huntress, and in return she calls me an ass.”
He gives a mock-sigh, but something in his words raises a question in your mind. Sylus had been out with the other hunters just before the storm hit. You hadn’t even been sure he would make it back to the village in time, but somehow he managed to find you?
“How did you even know I was out there?”
Sylus pauses for a moment. His voice, once he does speak, is startlingly somber. “Some of the hunting group saw the cloud wall rolling in. We rode back as fast as possible. Even so, if we’d had further to go, the wind would’ve outpaced us. I’ve never seen clouds that heavy and fast, outside of summer storms.”
“I tried to ride back too, when I saw them. But with the cold, I couldn’t feel my hands, and the rough ground…” You trail off, fully prepared to be teased about your riding skills. Instead, you feel an ever-so-slight tightening of his arm around you. You wonder if he’s even aware of his own movement.
Sylus continues, “When we arrived, people came out to greet us and help get everything secured before the worst of the storm. I didn’t see you throwing people out of the way like usual.”
“I do not throw people out of the way,” You mutter.
“If you say so, little huntress.” You can hear the smile in his voice for a moment, though it disappears when he continues, “I found Cota, and asked where you were. When she said you were out shepherding, I knew you wouldn’t make it back before the snow came. So, I took Khar and Gerel, and had them track you.”
“Was anyone else missing?”
“We’ll find out after the storm.”
The two of you are quiet for a moment, as you process his response. He didn’t notice anyone else was gone. He didn’t ask to see if any others were lost. He didn’t bother to try and search for anyone else in the snow.
He noticed you were missing.
He asked where you were.
He went into the storm for you.
“You… Sylus, were you out in that storm, just to find me?”
A small, humorless huff of laughter fans across the back of your skull again. “I wasn’t out there just taking a stroll, sweetie.”
“You could’ve lost Gerel and Khar. And your horse. And your life.”
“Worried about me, hm?”
Of course you were. Sylus is a strong, clever man. Perhaps the greatest warrior and hunter your tribe has known; but even the greatest of mortals are brought to their knees by the forces of nature and the whims of chance. You want to tell him all this, tell him that the thought of him standing alone amidst the howling winds, searching for the path to safety… even just thinking about it makes your chest feel as empty and cold as the storm still raging outside. Your breath catches, and you cannot force the words, glutted with feelings as they are, out of your throat.
So instead you reply, “It’s a big risk to take.”
“Maybe.” His tone is nonchalant, as though he is talking about what he’d brought home from hunting, rather than the act of risking his dearest possessions and life trying to save you in near-hopeless conditions. “But I don’t gamble unless the prize is worth the risk.”
It takes you a moment to digest the words, heart caught in your throat, hardly daring to believe that you’ve understood him correctly. A fragile but brilliant hope lights in your chest. You had been aware of the friendship that had begun to form between you and Sylus, and you had been aware of your desire to be something more to him, to be someone he wanted. But you hadn’t dared to imagine occupying a position of such value to him.
“You think I’m worth all that…?”
You don’t mean to say the words aloud, but the exhaustion loosens your lips just enough for them to spill out. Immediately your stomach lurches at a strange, shifting fear. Perhaps speaking the thought aloud has crossed some sort of line, daring the universe to snuff out your hope just as it had been lit.
A soft, teasing lilt returns to his voice as he speaks, “I believe that’s what I just said, little huntress. Hm, maybe I should be more concerned about your head.” The hand that isn’t curled around your middle gives the top of your head a soft tap, tap, tap.
A small, breathless laugh bubbles up out of your chest, the hope within you flaring bright and making your heart race. You don’t know how he manages to do it; to convey something as heartfelt as ‘you are worth risking my life and all I hold dear’, while simultaneously sounding like it’s the most simple thing in the world. Something that should be obvious even to a small child.
It’s a special talent you’ve noticed in Sylus ever since that day with the wolf pups; he makes you want to throttle him one moment, and in the next breath he’ll speak with such sincere simplicity that it utterly disarms you. He somehow manages to walk that fine line between keeping you on your toes with bantering, and keeping you grounded with his forthrightness. It's addictive. It's comforting. You're not even sure if it's something he tries to do, or if his natural state of being is just something that draws your soul in effortlessly.
You need to face him.
You turn in his grasp to look at him, trying to ignore the burst of prickling heat in your hands. It's worth the pain. Sylus is a striking picture in the low light; all silvery tousled hair, gold skin, and sanguine eyes, graced by a rare look of surprise for just a moment.
And then his face relaxes into a soft look, one you've started to see more and more, but never fails to make your heart race faster than a horse galloping over the grass sea.
“There you are,” he murmurs, voice rough and low. And you simply cannot help it. Frostbite be damned. You might die if you don't kiss him, and you've come close enough to that today already. You have to kiss him.
The press of your lips against his is insistent, but chaste. At least, at first. Sylus takes in a sharp breath, and for a fraction of a second you wonder if you've misread, if you've pushed too far. And then, his mouth becomes soft, and pliant, and something in your chest melts when the arm he has around you slides up your spine to press at the nape of your neck, leaving gooseflesh in its wake. A pleased sigh escapes you, unbidden. Before you are quite aware of your own movements, your hand is at his jaw, cupping his face, trying to pull him closer.
A new flare of pain sears your hand at the pressure, and you reflexively pull away with a hiss.
You open your eyes (when did they close?) to see Sylus, pupils blown wide, looking at you with that same sort of ferocity and determination you saw in him earlier, when your eyes met his in the storm. And for a moment, caught in that unwavering intensity, you swear your heart forgets how to beat.
His eyes remain fixed on your own as he takes your wrist and gently (too gently) moves it away from his face, which has settled back into its usual near-arrogant smirk. Reality crashes in on you then. You are in Sylus's yurt, kissing him, sharing a bed, naked. The realization is followed by a disorienting mix of embarrassment, pride, shame, and excitement. You've just kissed him for the first time, and you know if it weren't for the pain in your hands you would have taken as much as he would give you. Begged for it, maybe. What does he think of you now? How much would he let you take? What would you tell everyone once you left here?
But as usual, when your mind threatens to whirl itself into chaos, Sylus cuts through it.
“I'll have to collect on that part of my prize later, little huntress,” He murmurs, and you wonder if it is merely your imagination, or if he is actually as breathless as you are. His thumb strokes across the soft skin at the underside of your wrist, across the vein where your pulse is thrumming like a caught hare's. “I want to see what those pretty hands can do to me when they're all healed.”
Hearing him say it out loud makes the embarrassment resurface with a vengeance, and the barely-leashed heat in Sylus's gaze makes it unbearable. Breaking the stare, you take your hand back and shuffle under the blankets once more, until the hem falls across your cheek.
Sylus's amused chuckle earns him a glare from you, but your indignation is quickly soothed over as he drags his fingers through your hair, across your scalp, gently untangling the strands. After a few minutes, the gentle scratching opens the door for a wave of exhaustion, heightened by the warm darkness and the muffled howling of the winter winds outside.
You wonder, vaguely, if the touch was meant in apology, or to make you drowsy. You're not sure it matters. Sylus is here, looking at you with that affectionate, soft smile, as your lips begin to flutter.
“Sleep, shevonica,” is the last thing you hear before drifting into unconsciousness. This time, in the safety and warmth of Sylus’s hold.

“I don't fully understand what you've done to make that girl so loyal to you, but it is impressive. Well done, Damian.”
Damian breathed slowly, forcing a calm, emotionless exterior. “Mother?”
“The girl who tried to tell me she was ‘just doing Jason a favor by doing his father a favor’ by being your emergency contact at school.” Talia smirked. “Someone obviously warned her about me, and yet she was willing to lie to my face for you. It was almost believable too. Almost.”
Damian stayed very still, hands held behind his back, posture perfect, face blank. Talia observed him, frowning slightly. “What is not at all believable … is you pretending you don't care about her too.”
He clenched his jaw, tilting his head ever so slightly; “... I don't know wha-”
“Don't lie to me, Damian. This girl means something to you. What?”
He slowly met his mother's firm gaze; “... She's Todd's girlfriend. She has a bigger heart than is good for her; she is no threat to anyone.”
Talia raised an eyebrow, “... And what is she to you?”
“... She is kind.”
Talia frowned a bit, leaning forward to examine his face for any hint of his true feelings. Moments passed before she pulled back to her full height, a dissatisfied look on her face. “... Be wary of that girl, Damian. Kindness is the wrapping, but what you will actually receive is weakness. … I will allow you to stay, but this is the final straw. Your strange affection for those animals was one thing, but this… If you still wish to live here, you must get yourself under control before I am forced to bring you home for retraining.”
“I understand. I will not disappoint you, Mother.”
She nodded once, looking him over again. “... Bruce is treating you well?”
“Father is good to me.”
“And the others?”
“... They have accepted me as family. … They are also kind.”
She nodded. “... Very well. The League is watching you, Damian.”
He nodded once before she turned to leave. “... Goodbye, Mother.”
Talia finally left Gotham, and Jason and I prepared for Thanksgiving at the manor. Jason's Thanksgiving traditions started the day before, so on Wednesday afternoon we headed over. Alfred invited us in, hugging Jason tightly. We tossed our overnight bags in his room, and Jason led me down toward the kitchen. I brought down two large tupperwares full of ma'amoul cookies I had made for everyone.
Alfred was standing by the counter, mixing something, and Jason and I washed our hands. He took a seat at a large table where there were some washed vegetables. I sat beside him, and he grinned; “ever since my first Thanksgiving at the manor, I've helped Alfred with some of the holiday meal prep work. Mostly cutting veggies and stuff.”
“Cute~” I chuckled, kissing his cheek. “Can I help?”
“If you'd like, but if you want to just sit with me, you can do that too.” He smiled softly.
“I'd like to help. I hate to feel like a mooch.”
Alfred chuckled, bringing over another cutting board and knife. “You could never be a ‘mooch’, dear girl. You are our guest.”
“Thank you, Alfred, but still. If my mother heard I was invited over for the holidays and didn't help with something she'd be incredibly cross with me.”
He chuckled, nodding once. “Very well then. Master Jason knows what needs to be done.”
I nodded, and Jason offered me the bowl of potatoes. “You wanna peel and cube potatoes?”
“Works for me!” I got started, and moments later Dick, Tim, and Cass peered into the kitchen. “... Hi guys?”
Tim frowned, stepping forward and circling me. He seemed to be examining me for something. “... Look at me.”
I frowned, but turned to look at his face. He peered into my eyes, frowning deeply. “... What?”
“... Well, she doesn't appear to be possessed, and she's definitely not a zombie.” He turned to the others.
“What?? What's going on?”
Jason frowned deeply, giving Tim a pointed stare; “explain.”
Dick piped up; “did you really manage to lie to Damian's mother?”
“... I mean, I survived.” I shrugged.
“And she believed your lies?”
“No, she did not.” Damian piped up, entering the kitchen. He pushed a chair close to mine and sat down; “however, she said it was almost believable.”
I froze, clenching my jaw. Fuck. What had I done? “... I- is she taking you away? Jason said she might…”
Damian shook his head, hesitantly squeezing my wrist. “She said I can stay, for now.”
I slowly released my breath, dropping my potato and peeler. My hands were shaking, and my vision blurred. I rested my elbows on the table and pressed my palms to my forehead, trying desperately to calm down.
“… Good…” I barely heard the strained, sharp approximation of the word that I managed to force out. My pulse was thrumming in my ears, and I could feel my heart beating much too fast. My face was hot and wet, and my breathing was strained.
Tim cleared his throat awkwardly; “... H- hey, it's ok. She's gone now.”
Jason gently rubbed my back, and I felt Damian shift closer. “... Sister? … Why are you crying?”
I kept trying to control my breathing; “... I … I just can't lose ya, kiddo … i- if she took you away because of me, … I don't know what I'd do…”
A gentle hand pressed between my shoulder blades, and Alfred leaned over me, setting a cup of tea in front of me, along with a soft white hankie. “Breath, Miss. … Miss Talia did not take Master Damian. We will never allow her to take him against his will.”
I slowly nodded and he rubbed my back a few times before stepping away. I shakily reached down for the cup. Dick and Tim awkwardly smiled at me.
“Yeah, what Alfred said.” Tim nodded.
“Yeah, finders keepers - Damian's our problem now, she doesn't get to take him back.” Dick chuckled.
I carefully sipped my tea, smiling weakly. I didn't know how he knew, but Alfred made it exactly how I liked it. Once I set the cup down, Damian took my hand, squeezing tight. I turned toward him, a bit surprised by the determined look in his eyes. “I will never leave you, Sister. I promise... Not unless you tell me to go.”
I sniffled softly and nodded. “I will never send you away, baby brother.”
Before I could open my arms to offer a hug, he leaned in to take one. Dick and Tim stilled, staring like toddlers at the zoo as I wrapped my arms around him and kissed the top of his head.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw Tim fumble with his jeans pocket, trying to covertly get his phone.
“Do it and I end you, Drake.” Damian growled softly.
I giggled, stroking his back gently. He pulled back and I reluctantly released him. I saw the boys shift toward the doorway, and I looked over. Bruce smiled awkwardly, and I hesitantly smiled back.
“B, tell me you saw that.” Dick pleaded softly. Bruce nodded once.
Damian scowled, pushing his chair back a bit. I chuckled softly, going to the sink to wash my hands again. “Don’t make a big deal, Dick.”
“But it is a big deal! I mean … seriously, Damian, where did that come from?”
Damian shoved past them to escape the kitchen and his brothers’ questions as I returned to the table, peeling the potatoes in front of me. “And that is exactly why he doesn't usually do that. So, once again, please, don't make a big deal.”
Dick sputtered a bit more as Alfred ushered them all out of the kitchen. As the man headed into the pantry, Jason leaned over to kiss my shoulder; “good job, mama~”
I blushed a bit, hushing him softly. “Jay!”
“What? Damian can't hear me. And you've made it very obvious, you care more about him than his actual mother. I know he insists you're ‘Sister’, but that's just because he knows his mom would lose her mind over being replaced.” He smirked a bit, whispering; “you and I both know, whether we call it that or not, you're being his mama. And you're doing a damn good job of it too.”
I blushed more, smiling into my chest. “... How so?”
“Last time Talia came to check on him, he was withdrawn and broody for a month after. This time she's been gone for a day and he's already socializing with the family. That's all you, ma.”
I smiled softly, finishing cubing the potatoes. “... You're a sweetheart, Jay. But you shouldn't give me credit for his progress. He does the work, he fights for it tooth and nail, I just provide a safe space. Just like I do for you.” I leaned in to kiss him gently; “you both work so hard to heal from your pasts; to be better and do better…”
His cheeks and ears turned pink as he leaned in, whispering; “you make it possible.”
I dried my hands and cupped his cheeks, whispering back; “you do the work. I just make sure you're safe and taken care of while you do it. It is so much easier to sit in your trauma and just accept that that's how things are now. Fighting your demons is painful, and complicated, and incredibly brave. You are fighting an enemy that doesn't tire, doesn't fall back to regroup, doesn't even die. And yet you have pushed them back. You’ve told your demons that they do not own the territory of your mind, you do. You've made remarkable progress, and you should be proud of yourself. Don't ever give away the credit for your victories; they are yours, you earned them. I'm just here to support you in the fight.”
He blinked a bit, hugging me tightly. “... Damn, baby girl. … Ok.”
I smiled softly, tilting his head up to kiss him gently. He sighed happily, kissing back. A moment later, Alfred cleared his throat from behind us.
Jason jumped back, blushing bright red as Alfred spoke in an intentionally calm, measured voice; “if you two are done with those vegetables, I believe the others are starting a movie in the family room.”
Jason cleared his throat, nodding. “Y- yeah, thanks Alfred.”
We brought the veggies over and Alfred offered Jason a bowl of popcorn. He gently gripped my elbow, gesturing for Jay to go, before offering me a small piece of paper. “My mobile phone number, Miss.”
I blinked a bit, taking it. “Oh… thanks. … Why?”
He chuckled; “you said it yourself, Miss. You are here to support them. … Young Miss Barbara and I have been the only members of the support team for quite a while; it will be nice to have a third teammate to work with.”
I smiled softly. “I see. Then I look forward to working with you, Alfred.”
He nodded, offering me a large bowl of popcorn. “Master Bruce mentioned you'll be providing medical care.”
I nodded, gathering the cookies I'd brought before taking the bowl. “That's right, once I have the necessary training.”
“... It is a big job, taking care of the Waynes.”
“It’s not a job to me, Alfred, it’s just love. … The trick is loving people the way they need to be loved. The way they’ll accept love. Jason is … so brave, and kind. He’s good to everyone but himself. He needs someone to be good to him. Someone to tend to his wounds, to chase away the nightmares, and be a safe port in the storm. I can do those things for him. Damian needs space to be a child. Someone he can trust to take care of the responsibilities, and just let him experience being young. And I can do that for him. … It’s not a job to love them, it’s my greatest pleasure. And it’s an honor to be someone they trust, especially when they have been punished so harshly for their trust in the past…”
He smiled warmly, nodding. “Exactly, dear girl. Love is not a mere emotion, or empty words. It is action, and loving the Waynes, loving them well, … it takes a certain fortitude. Fortitude I believe you have.”
“Thank you, Alfred. … I won't let you down.”
“Oh, you mustn't do this for me, Miss. There must be something inside you calling you to serve.”
I chuckled softly; “not to worry, there is. Obviously I love Jason and Damian very much, and the others, … they've all been such good friends to me. I was taught to take care of my friends. … The world is not always the beautiful, bright place we were promised as children. But I know how to make candles. And if my candles aren't enough to push back the darkness, I can make more. If there still aren't enough candles, I will build a bonfire. And if that’s not enough, if the darkness presses in anyway, … I will lasso the sun if I must.”
Alfred smiled at that. “... I believe you would, Miss. … Go now, enjoy the movie.”
I nodded, smiling softly. “Thank you, Alfred.”
I headed to the family room, taking a seat on the couch between my boys. Damian stared at the tupperwares in my hands intensely. “... What did you bring?”
I chuckled, offering him one of them before setting the other on the table. “This one is just for you, and the other is for everyone to share.”
He slowly opened the tupperware, grinning. “... You … made ma'amoul?”
“You said your mother used to make them for you during the holidays. Your holiday traditions are just as important as the rest of ours.”
He held the tupperware to his chest and leaned against me for a moment, mumbling; “... Thank you, Sister.”
I smiled softly, running my fingers through his hair. “You're very welcome, baby.”
I was woken in the morning to Dick playfully pounding on Jason's door with both fists and singing; “Waaakeyyyy waaakeyyyy! You two better not be nakeyyyyy!”
Jason groaned, grasping blindly at his bedside table. He got ahold of his alarm clock and threw it. Dick cried out, startled, at the noise of it crashing against the door, making me giggle softly. Jay's arms pulled my back against his chest as he grumbled softly; “... Fuckin’ Dick …”
“... Hm ... Think his parents named him that on purpose?”
After a moment of silence, Jason snorted softly, burying his face into my neck. “Dork …. Ughhh, ’s too early… wha' time is it even?”
I chuckled, grabbing my phone to check the time. “... 9am.”
He growled, pulling me closer. “... Mh. … Much too early.”
A soft knock on the door drew a more aggressive growl out of him. I laughed, calling out; “yeaaah?”
“Dick was supposed to get you for breakfast.” Duke called through the door.
“Thanks Duke, we'll be down soon. Start without us, ok?”
“Kay.”
I slowly turned over to face Jason. He sighed, opening one eye. “... Now that's not fair.”
“What?” I frowned.
“You got startled awake just like I did, but you’re already fully recovered and you look like a goddess. Meanwhile I look and feel half-dead.”
I giggled, running my fingers through his hair. “Aw, but you look cute all sleepy like this~”
He grunted softly, blinking slowly. “Oh do I?”
“Very cute. Plus, your voice sounds extra amazing in the mornings~ that's truly unfair.”
He smirked softly, kissing my forehead. “Mh~ ... Let's blow off breakfast. Just stay in bed and cuddle all day.”
I chuckled, stroking down his chest. “But I'm hungry … plus, you know Dick or Steph will come knocking if we're not down there soon.”
He sighed, stroking my hip. “... Yeah … ok, fine.”
We slowly disentangled, getting dressed for the day. Jason had told me family holidays were always a casual-clothes affair at Wayne Manor, thank goodness, so we ended up at breakfast surrounded by sweatpants, joggers, and pj's.
Dick grinned, already done with his food by the time we came down, and watched us eat. I blinked a bit; “... Dick?”
“Hm?”
“... Ya good?”
“No, I'm not good. You aren't eating.” He frowned.
“You're staring.”
Tim rolled his eyes. “He wants to start on the tree, but we don't start the tree until everyone's had breakfast.”
“... I see. Well, stop staring and I'll eat.” Dick sighed, his leg bouncing uncontrollably.
We all finished breakfast, and Dick practically herded the group to the family room. I looked around, frowning a bit. “... Is Bruce not joining us?”
“Ah, he's in the cave…. Bruce doesn't do much on holidays. Especially Christmas, so … he doesn't do this part of Thanksgiving.” Tim smiled weakly.
“... Why?”
“... He misses his parents.”
“Oh. … Well that's super sad.” I frowned.
Dick shrugged. “It is what it is. He'll be up for dinner though.”
I nodded slowly. Dick made us all sit in a semi-circle on the floor around a large pine tree. The tree had been set up at some point in the night after our movie, and I hoped Alfred hadn't been made to lug it in on his own.
“Now,” Dick grinned, surrounded by plastic tubs; “as most of you know, there will be other trees in the ballroom and foyer, for the Christmas gala. But, the family room is our room, and as such, this is our tree. Where the other trees will be elegant, themed decorations, fit for the public eye, this tree, our tree, will be the gaudiest, ugliest, least public-appropriate Christmas tree in all of Gotham! As Bat-family tradition, the youngest present family member will provide the first ornament on the chopping block.”
Damian rolled his eyes affectionately, standing. He approached a tub and removed the lid, selecting a cardboard and construction paper star. It had clearly been a child's craft project; the points were uneven, the glitter was half gone, and there was a small photo of Batman and one of the Robin's in the center. “I present the ugliest ornament in the Wayne Family Collection; made as a present to Father by one Jason Peter Todd for his first Christmas at the manor, age 12.”
There was a round of applause as Damian put the ornament on the tree and Jason bowed dramatically. I giggled, watching everyone take turns presenting their bid for the ugliest ornament in the collection. There were some truly hideous options, and a few I wasn't sure were meant to be kept past the Christmas they were made for. Finally, Dick gestured for me to stand.
“Now, as this is your first Christmas with our family, tradition dictates that you act as our judge.”
“Judge?”
“If you would.” He gestured to the tree. “Which decoration is the absolute worst in the Wayne family collection?”
I looked them over, chuckling softly. “... This is a no hurt feelings contest?” Everyone agreed. “And what does the winner get?”
“Bragging rights, and the offending item is finally thrown away.”
I chuckled again. “I see … ok, well … this ceramic mouse has incredibly unsettling eyes …” Tim pumped his fist. “Buuut, the name of the game is ‘ugliest’, not ‘unsettling’, so … I think I will give it to Cass.”
I pointed to the popcorn garland Cass had put up. What little popcorn remained was mostly flattened, and had been spray painted white and yellow, creating a poor illusion of fresh buttered popcorn. Cass smirked, bowing while the others groaned and clapped.
“Thank you for your service to our family, Judge.” Dick shook my hand, grinning. He ripped the ‘garland’ off the tree, dramatically handing it off to Cass who threw it in the trash. “I hereby declare this tree ready to decorate!”
We spent the afternoon eating snacks, watching seasonal movies, and taking turns adding ornaments, lights, and other decorations to the tree. Periodically Dick went up and rearranged things, he was apparently unusually particular about ornament placement. By the time we were done, it had the strangest assortment of decorations I had ever seen. Craft projects, tinsel, lights, vintage, modern, every color and theme imaginable, it was all there! It was everything Dick's speech had promised; ugly, gaudy, and not at all something the public would expect to see at Wayne Manor.
Once our movie was done, Dick called us all back to the tree. He made a few more adjustments, circling it slowly. “Well done, team! This is by far the ugliest tree we've ever done! You should all be proud of yourselves for your efforts. … But, it's not complete just yet.”
He pulled out a selection of velvet boxes and opened the first one. “Let's see … looks like Duke is first this year!”
Duke grinned and took the box, popping out a glass sphere ornament, about the size of his fist. It had a pearlescent finish, and his name painted on it in black in an elegant cursive font. He found a spot for it -one of the spots Dick had so carefully constructed during his ornament rearranging all afternoon- and sat back down. Dick opened the next box, and Stephanie was called up to put an identical ornament, this one adorned with her name, on the tree. One by one everyone put up an ornament with their name on it, until there were four boxes left.
“As we all know, Babs is with her dad today. She will add her ornament when she visits tomorrow. Alfred will be in after dinner to add his, and Bruce will come in when he's feeling up to it. … So, that just leaves…” he held a box out to Jason; this one was adorned with a red bow.
I tilted my head, curious. Jason had already put up his ornament. He turned to me, beaming, and offered me the box. “This one is for you, my love.”
I blushed bright red, slowly taking it from his hand. I popped it open, and there it was; an ornament, identical to all theirs, with my name painted in a swirling cursive font.
“I … I don't know what to say …” I blinked, trying desperately not to tear up.
Tim chortled; “oh no, we broke her!”
Damian shushed him, scooting closer. “You don't have to say anything, Sister. Just put your ornament on the tree.”
I chuckled softly, carefully removing it from its box, and stood. Dick helped me find an empty spot for it, and I delicately hung my ornament. He grinned, offering me a tight hug. “Welcome to the family, little sister.”
I got a glass of water before heading up to bed. Dinner had been incredible, we'd played some games, and the house was finally settling in for the night. I put my glass in the sink and made my way up the stairs, going down one hallway and then another, slowly making my way toward Jason's room.
“Father?” I heard Damian’s soft voice around the corner.
“Yes?”
“... Do you know any lullabies?” I could barely hear the whispered words.
“Of course?….”
“... Ok.” After a brief silence, Damian walked briskly past me, staring at the floor in front of him. Bruce turned the corner and watched him go, a confused look on his face. We made eye contact and I hesitantly smiled.
“... Bruce, can I ask you something?” Damian’s door snapped shut at the other end of the hall.
He sighed; “... yes?”
“What did Damian just ask you?”
“If I know any lullabies.”
I shook my head; “those are the words he used, but … that’s not what he was asking.”
“Fine, why don’t you tell me then, since you’re so smart? What was my son asking?” He snapped.
I bit back the sharp retort on the tip of my tongue. This was for Damian, I had to be gentle; “... As I’m sure you know, Damian struggles to request things. He’d rather die than suffer the humiliation of asking for something he desperately wants if there’s any chance he’ll be denied. Most especially when he views his desires as childish, or inappropriate. It’s much easier for him to ask a question that is designed to guide you to make an offer. … So, when he asked if you knew any lullabies …” I trailed off, hoping to let Bruce fill in the blanks.
He frowned deeply; “... he wanted me to offer to sing one?”
I nodded, smiling softly. “Exactly.”
“... He’s fourteen…”
“When he was a baby, his mother taught him to kill. She gave him no chance to be a child. Now, here, he is allowed to be whatever he wishes. It is perfectly rational, healthy even, for him to seek the childhood experiences he didn’t get at the traditional ages. And seeking them from you implies that he views you as a safe person to be vulnerable with.” His shoulders fell as he sighed. He looked so defeated. “… It’s not too late Bruce, why don’t you go prove him right?”
I smiled softly, looking up at him. He seemed so unsure of himself; like a new father worried about holding his baby wrong. “You’re welcome. … Go take care of your son.”
Bruce blinked a bit and nodded, rushing toward Damian's room. He stopped beside me to mutter; “... Thank you.”
He smiled a bit and went to knock gently on Damian’s door. I continued down the hall to Jason’s room, knocking before I slipped inside.

Seungcheol with a fidgety partner
Requested? Yes! Request: ‘hmm cheol or anyone in svt and how they would handle a jittery partner (i say as i am bouncing my leg and fidgeting) lol!’
Seungcheol, who is always offering his hand for you to fidget with He normally thinks nothing of your fidgeting. You pick up a straw wrapper at the restaurant to twist and play with or you play with the handle of your bag as it sits in your lap. He kind of thinks of it as a cute habit, but recognizes that sometimes it stems from anxiety. So if you guys are out somewhere and you don’t have anything specific to fidget with, he won’t watch you bounce from one side to the other for long. He’ll hold out his hand for you and give a little squeeze when you grab on. He’s totally unfazed by you squeezing, or changing the way you grip his hand, or twisting the rings he might have on. He actually finds that it comforts him too. They’re gentle reminders that you’re still right there, even when he might be too busy to give you the attention that he wishes he could.
Seungcheol, who buys you fidget toys for when he can’t be around to hold your hand You have a plethora of fidget toys, all purchased by Seungcheol over the years. Some are stress balls, some are silent spinners, some are rather loud spinners. Some slide, some pop, some snap. You had no idea there were so many different kinds or where he even finds them. And he has them stashed away everywhere. There are some on your desk at home and at work. There’s a couple hidden under the coffee table. There are even a few hidden in the kitchen for you when you come talk to him while he cooks. He knows you don’t always need it, but notices how you seem to be able to relax and focus with something to fiddle with, so when he notices that you’re extra jittery that day, he’s sliding one to you without a word.
Seungcheol, who will gently put his hand over your leg When you’re in a setting that that sort of fidgeting won’t really be suitable, he knows your go-to is to bounce your leg. You two will be out to dinner with others and he’ll feel the rhythmic vibration against his chair. It doesn’t bother him, but he knows it might bother others, thus bothering you. So sometimes, even when he’s eating, he’ll put a hand under the table and lay it across your thigh. There’s absolutely nothing inappropriate about it - just a gentle reminder that it’s okay and you can relax. He’d prefer for you to take a deep breath and eat after this, but sometimes he’ll let it slide when your hands grip on to his under the table.
Seungcheol, who carefully tries to find out what makes you jittery He never wants to pry, but the nervous energy you carry a lot of the time makes him wonder. He’s so gentle about it and doesn’t assume anything bad right away. Maybe you’re just drinking too much caffeine, in which case he might urge you to cut back. Maybe it’s that you just have too much energy even without caffeine, in which case he offers to help you work out some of that energy by going for a walk or run, or going to the gym. Maybe it’s that you’re just kind of stressed lately, in which case he wants to help reduce your stress in anyway he can. But if there’s something that you’re actually nervous about, he wants to know about that too so he can help more. He’ll help you avoid some of those things on occasion, but ultimately he wants you to feel comfortable going about life and will encourage you to face those things (with him by your side, of course).
Seungcheol, who is really relieved that you can relax around him It’s something he’s actually really proud of. Not just that you reach out to him when you’re feeling that way. But sometimes, you’ll come home and collapse into his arms and just finally be… still. He likes that the nervous energy totally dissipates when it’s just the two of you at home. You’re totally at ease curled up next to him on the couch during a movie night. You’re totally still as you both lay in bed, with you on his chest. It’s something that makes him misty-eyed if he thinks about it for too long.

RAN HAITANI – DRABBLE
🍥 ₊‧ A planned night of fun takes a turn when Ran’s love for sleep takes over, but that’s not an issue for either of you.
WARNINGS : None really– excessive fluff, light teasing from Ran PAIRINGS : ran haitani x gn!reader WORDCOUNT : 552 m.list
The clock on your living room wall ticked steadily, the hands inching closer to 9:30PM. You sat cross-legged on the floor, surrounded by a cozy arrangement of pillows, blankets, and snacks. A rom-com played on the television, though neither you nor Ran Haitani were paying much attention to the characters on the screen.
Ran lounged beside you, propped up by an array of pillows. His long legs stretched out comfortably, his eyelids drooping as he absentmindedly munched on a piece of popcorn. His hair was slightly mussed, giving him a softer look.
“This is nice,” he murmured, his deep voice breaking the comfortable silence. He turned his head lazily to glance at you, his violet eyes glinting with something warm. “But, babe, I gotta ask—do you really need this many blankets? Feels like I’m sitting in a textile shop.”
You rolled your eyes, chucking a piece of popcorn at him. “It’s called ambiance, Ran. A sleepover date isn’t complete without a fort of blankets.”
“Uh-huh,” he drawled, catching the popcorn effortlessly and popping it into his mouth. “And what’s the plan after this? Stay up all night talking about our feelings?”
You smirked, leaning back against the couch. “You promised we’d do ‘couple things,’ remember? I was thinking we could bake something, or maybe play a few rounds of that cheesy board game I bought last week.”
Ran raised an eyebrow, his grin turning teasing. “You sure you can handle that? Don’t want you getting embarrassed if you lose y’know.”
“Yeah, yeah,” you said, giving him a playful shove. “Big words for someone who can barely keep his eyes open right now.”
“Not true,” he protested, though the way he stifled a yawn immediately after undermined his words. “I’m just… conserving energy. Long day, you know?”
You tilted your head, feigning suspicion. “Ran, are you seriously about to fall asleep on me? On our sleepover date?”
He chuckled, the sound low and lazy, as he stretched out fully and rested his head on a pillow. “Not my fault you made this place so damn comfortable. It’s like a trap.”
Before you could retort, Ran tugged on the blanket draped over your lap, pulling it over both of you. His arm wrapped around your waist, pulling you down beside him as he rested his chin on your shoulder.
“C’mon,” he mumbled, his voice soft and almost pleading. “Just a quick nap. We’ll do all the cute couple stuff tomorrow, I promise.”
You sighed, knowing it was a losing battle. Ran had always been a master of getting his way, and the warmth of his embrace combined with the soothing sound of his breathing made it hard to argue.
“You better not back out..” you muttered, your words muffled against his chest.
“Never,” he said, pressing a light kiss to the top of your head. “Anything you want, baby. Just let me sleep first.” Within minutes, his breathing evened out, his grip on you loosening slightly as he drifted off. You glanced at the clock one last time—9:32 PM. 'Typical Ran', you thought with a fond smile, letting your eyes close as you gave in to the comfortable drowsiness that had crept over you.
You didn’t mind this at all, he would make up for it tomorrow anyway, he always does.

Daytrip Illumi my beloved... and poor Darling. You capture how unnerving and unsettling he should be so well!
Illumi should be Strange and Uncanny even at his mildest(? not sure if an Illumi in love could be 'mild', but idk if it could be called volatile either. Darling was right, you can't ever tell with him); man was cosplaying Pinhead for a week. He could talk the whole time but just literally rattled at people. And poor Ghost, my stomach just dropped because everything so far was downright too tame and too thoughtful for a Yandere.
Aside from the porn, I was waiting for that drop. Darling really can't have nice things, can't she? Or rather, she can't have anything he's not able to take. Whether a Darling is defiant (Obedience Training, Ingress) or submissive (Daytrip) he's always going to pile on the trauma.
But the moment he started mouthing and groping at her in the car, I knew he was out of patience. Everything else that day was window dressing and foreplay, and the bit where she picks a cute, frilly, puff-sleeved dress really sold the toy and doll comparison later, she was so right at the observation that Illumi took her as a ballerina for his music box. In the end, the daytrip really wasn't for her to enjoy: he ripped up her dream dress, dashed her hope that her cat was doing well without her, and didn't get to eat anything at the picnic aside from the morsel he gave her. Girl couldn't even enjoy the scenery cause he blocked it off with himself. The end was so despondent in comparison to the beginning where she resolves to take any out that presents itself, falling asleep and giving into the dark (Illumi) swallowing her.
And meanwhile, Illumi's just had an epiphany on why his parents kept having kids even after the designated heir Killua. And also patting himself on the back cause he checked off all the boxes on his 'perfect romantic date to-do list', and gotten the *ideal* ending of having finally lost his v-card. 10/10, Great Day. Would do again sometime (but not too soon).
The juxtapostion between her opinion of how the daytrip went and his opinion of how it went must be... something. I almost don't want to know, and I don't know how to properly describe what this made me feel, but it's visceral.
i love it when you people treat my silly little fics like they need to be studied under a microscope,,,, i will be living on this ask for weeks thank you anon <3
illumi just makes me,,, yeah. i feel like there's so little you can do to actually fight against him (running's not an option when he has you under surveillance 24/7, fighting a seasoned hitman won't end well, etc.), but good behavior only makes him more likely to proceed with the awful things he would've done anyway, had you spent every minute from your inevitably kidnapping kicking, screaming, and cursing his name. he's got a running checklist of uncomfortable positions he'd like to see you in, and it's less a question of when you'll be ready for it and more what he'll have to do to make you compliant enough to be, if not a willing participant, than a docile one. i think he does care about your feelings and you loving him back, but your priorities are so drastically different that you two are never actually going to end up on the same page. in his mind, he's done his research (i.e. played roughly a hundred hours of the most popular dating sims he could get his hands on), been a good partner, and taken very good care of his beloved doll/pet/captive. in yours, you've been violated and abused by the man who both kidnapped you and admitted to killing your cat without blinking, and there's very little reconciliation from there.

Why do you like the brat
(genuinely want to know lmao)
funny you should ask that...
it all started when I saw that one ad where leo was kicking his feet in the bathtub...(big yap warning)
shallowly, he gives power bottom energy. i was prepared to not like him since my friend was further in the game + picked leo bc she thought he looked cunty and quickly found out that she hated him, but my first meeting of him was that ad.... that ad.... hes so like girly and like cutesy and and :3c!! so then i actually met him in the game... hes so girly and cutesy omg, i live for that fake bitch energy. hes so like... pathetic and two faced and cute like....
so basically i have this thing where i yearn for this kind of dynamic where i can overpower him but hes smarter than me and also very interesting so i just let him boss me around. hes so like... weak. and i love his voice i need him to moan in my ear especially when hes being fake and cute bc he wants something from you? "captain~<3 can you please open this bottle for me?~ <3" ugh. fuck. boner. hes such a vixen. hes such a diva.
also him crying... oh my lord LEO CRYING!!! UGHHH. the world's prettiest crier <3 and his goddamn tongue piercing
also like the switch up is hot too, the duality of man <3 my pretty delicate princess!!
psychologically, hes such a fucking wreck and i love that, hes such a bitch, and hes so manipulative, and hes so jealous, and insecure, and such a liar, im so fascinated!!! does he know how awful he is? does he realize how toxic hes being? is he toxic on purpose?? is he a shit friend on purpose? is it a power trip to make sho pay for his food or is he just lazy? i want to know what hes thinking
his relationship with sho is so fascinating too, like its so clear hes scared of losing him but in a way he also hates/loves him. like wdym you have other friends besides me??? you're starting a business??? ugh, ur so lame. and he actively tries to isolate him, is he jealous of sho's popularity? his talents? his social life? or does he hate the things that takes sho away from him?? he also does not give a shit about shos happiness either bc he like badmouthed him to subaru just so subaru could leave him alone... wow... what a fucking asshole... im so invested, drama!!!! also the valentine's day line where he doesn't mention getting anything but sho does,,, it means something no?? dude, like, leo is everything and nothing, i bet he feels so worthless but to make up for that he uses sho and internet validation
hes built like a reality tv character, THE instigator but hes smart about it. hes such an attention whore, like .... regina george... guys real shit i have a mean girl kink /j
leos the type of bitch to flirt with and sleep with his boss to make more money.
ANOTHER THING he has like a weird sense of justice?? like he hates ppl who've made the world shitty (ref to when he jumps off the building) and so him and sho scamming old rich guys is kinda like them being vigilantes? leos kinda like an anti-hero in a way. hes so interesting!!! AHH!!!
omg also hes in his self-destructive era and i need to see how it goes, like will he be a villain? will his life get ruined bc of himself?? will he get punished? will he redeem himself? does he regret his choices??
ngl i tho im actually not romantically interested in him, which is pretty surprising considering how much i like him. im obsessed with him in the most objectifying way possible
but yeah i love my toxic fruit tart boy <333
#tokyo debunker#tdb#leo kurosagi#tokyo debunker leo#answered#anon ask#kind of a character analysis but not really#also i relate to his need for validation#lowkey leos relatable asf like if i was visibly insecure and miserable we'd be besties#plap plap plap

here for you | peter parker
・❥・ summary: after getting kicked out, peter comes to the rescue like always ・❥・word count: 1.1k ・❥・warnings: n/a ・❥・ authors note: this is my first time writing for my beloved peter parker!! its also the first time ive wrote anything in like a month. this was a request from this list. feel free to request any!
The rain was falling hard in New York City. It was one of those cold, rainy nights that had most people bustling through the streets with their umbrellas hurrying to get home. Unfortunately, you were one of those people. The heavy thud of the raindrops falling on your umbrella and the usual sound of the busy New York traffic were the only things keeping you grounded in that moment. The puddles on the pavement soaked your favourite pair of boots as you aimlessly wandered, suitcase full of belongings trailing along with you as you dragged it across the concrete. This wasn’t how your day was supposed to go. Your original plan had been to sit in front of the fire, cup of cocoa in your hand as you watched Love Actually. Too bad you had forgotten to pay your darn rent.
Money had been tight lately. Balancing a part time job and university was no easy feat. So much so that you had ended up sacrificing your job for the sake of your mental health. You had thought your savings would be enough until you had a better grip on things to find another job but you were wrong. The well had run dry and after another missed rent payment, your landlord had kicked you out.
When it rained, it definitely poured.
As you stepped into a particularly deep puddle, the familiar sound of a ‘thwip’ sounded above you. Craning your neck up, you spotted none other than the famous Spider-Man perched on a lamppost, head tilted as he looked at you almost like he was examining you. The corners of your lips almost tugged up into a smile as you imagined the concern in his eyes under that mask. Peter Parker had shared his secret with you almost the day he’d found out himself. You were his best friend after all – the two of you told each other everything. The eyes on his mask widened in questioning.
“Got kicked out,” you shrugged. Saying it out loud made it feel all the more real. Not that walking through the streets with everything you owned in a suitcase didn’t.
After checking to make sure nobody was around to hear, Peter spoke. “Meet me at my place. Gotta take care of something first.”
With that, he swung away no doubt on his way to tackle some crime. At least in a city like New York, Spider-Man was never short of something nefarious to keep him occupied. The whole city was like a hub for superheroes and criminals at this point. It was so much so that you were almost desensitised to it. Maybe that had something to do with the fact your best friend was one of those superheroes. Your feet carried you to Peter’s apartment, knocking on the door when you approached. No answer. He must still be out. A sigh passed your lips as you sat on the floor, back against the wall, legs stretched out in front of you as you waited for that nerdy, cute friend of yours to arrive. The raindrops from your jacket were dripping on the floor. Huh, you hadn’t realised it had been raining that hard. Probably too lost in your own thoughts.
It was ten minutes later when the door to the apartment opened – Peter must have swung in through his window. The pros of being Spider-Man meant you didn’t have to deal with such meander things as walking. Sometimes you wished that spider had bit you so you could swing your way through the city without a care. His mask was in his hand as you stepped through the threshold, the door shutting behind you. His big, brown eyes looking at you with concern.
“I know you have questions and I’ll answer but I really need to get out of these wet clothes right now,” you cringed as you pulled your jacket off, your jeans sticking to your legs.
“Oh! Uh, yeah, sure, sure. You can… use the bathroom. You know where it is,” Peter nodded, his cheeks tinting pink at the mere thought of you getting changed in his apartment. He knew he shouldn’t have thoughts like that but he couldn’t help himself. Throughout the years Peter had somewhat started to develop feelings for you. It was something he beat himself up about every single day because there was no way you felt the same way for him. Why would you? You were incredible and he was… him. No, Peter would always keep this secret to himself. There was no way he was ever going to lose you so if it only meant friendship then he’d take it.
“You should have told me you were struggling to pay rent!” Peter exclaimed. Once both of you had gotten changed, you’d situated yourselves on Peter’s couch, a blanket thrown over the two of you as you filled him in on your situation.
“Peter, no offence but you can barely afford to pay your own rent let alone help me.”
“I would’ve found a way.”
A smile lit up your face, hand reaching out to give his a squeeze. “I know and I am so lucky to have someone like you looking out for me like that but I could never ask that of you.”
Peter’s eyes glanced down at your hand atop his, barely containing how sweaty his palm was starting to feel at your simple touch. He was down bad. His Adam's apple bobbed as he swallowed down a gulp, shaking his head. “You know I’m always going to be there for you, right? Always. No matter what happens. I would do anything and everything in this world to help you and protect you. There’s nothing more precious to me than you.”
His words hit you straight in the feelings, your heart beating a mile a minute like it was about to burst out of your chest. The sincere look in his eyes, the way he always seemed to make you his number one priority – there was nobody who looked after you as fiercely as Peter did. Despite everything he’d been through with his family and losing Gwen, he had never let you down. The second your eyes met his it was like the whole world had stopped still. Your breath hitched, caught in your throat as Peter’s delicate fingers reached out to gently tuck a stray strand of your hair behind your ear. His thumb brushed your cheek, the gesture making your stomach do flips.
“Stay here with me…. for as long as you want,” his voice was barely above a whisper.
“Nowhere else I’d rather be,” you leaned into his touch. The moment lingering between you, neither wanting it to end. There would be many, many more moments just like this one – you just didn’t know it yet.

(Odile)
(Well at least they're not dead.)
(After scaring Siffrin and Isabeau half to death and guiding them home, you were off again for your next errand. Gems, you were hoping to relax for a day, but it looks like that wasn't to happen.)
(Ah libraries, where would you be without them.)
(Todays subject, the Monets. A the Inn, you didn't have many resources at your disposal. There were a few books writen by the Monets there, and you could get some information from that. But now that you were in a city with a library? It was time for research.)
(It was a sizeable two story library, with a desk up front with a librarian there. You walked up to them.) "Good afternoon."
"Good after- o-oh-!" (The librarian perked up.)
"Yes, yes, savior of Vaugarde. Please, just call me Odile."
"Oh well, good to meet you Odile! Anything I can help you find?"
"Yes, actually. Do you have books from the Monets? Or better yet, about them?"
"Don't even need to look that up." (The librarian chuckled.) "Historical section, the Monets actually live in Wolworth so they donate copies to the library."
"How kind of them." (You say as convincingly as you could.) "Thank you, but is that all?"
"Well. . ." (The librarian ducked down bellow the counter and came up with a book.) "Feel free to look through the library catalog, might take a while though."
"May I take it with me into the library?"
"Usualy I'd say no, buuuut you saved the country so sure!"
"Ha! Thank you, I'll bring it back in one piece."
(You make your way to the history section; two whole rows there were taken up by the Monets books. You select a few of them to peruse. "The Ychian Forgotten Legends." "Body Craft in Poteria; A history." "Curiosities of the Darkless Throne." All quite dramatic titles. You take the books, and the catalog, to a table.)
(You look at the little bios of the writers, printed at the back. Merlon Monet and Perci Monet. Doesnt say where they're from. Doesn't say who they were. Just that they're a bonded couple traveling the world searching for truth. Gems. . .)
(You could read through the books, but you already read some of their books, it would be wasting time. So what about the catalog? You open it up, looking up by author name; Monets.)
(History books, from all over the world. From the tallest mountain in Tour'bach, to the depths of the Mala'ka reefs. You found books reaching back to four, five years ago before they abruptly stopped. Hmm, usualy writers have some smaller, less ambitious books as their first few publications, but you didn't see any here.)
(Then what was the first book they published? Five years ago, and the only book listing just Perci as the author. And the title, well, it certainly caught your eye.)
("The Monet Family; When ego overtakes devotion.")
(You're sure you would have caught something with such a commedicly obvious title while looking through the Histories. You get up, then, and look through biographys instead. Nothing. You go to the front desk to ask where it could be.)
"By the looks of it, someone checked it out." (The Librarian was looking through book rental records.) "One. . . D.D.W.D."
(A bust. The librarian didn't even remember who this person looked like. Gems alive. . . But, that is a lead. Back to the catalog.)
(Last name, D. Look for last name D, first name D, middle names D.W. . . You had a theory, and. . . If you were right. . . Aha!)
(History section, a handful of booklets, written by "Daniel D.W. De'Worde." Ha, cute. You get up and look for one of the booklets.)
(Daniel D.W. De'Worde. You knew that last name easily, it was William De'Worde. The couragous journalist in the fantasy book "The Truth." Editor for the Ankh-Morpork Times. The spitting image of someone who cares about the truth. Ha!)
(You grabbed one of the booklets and walked back. So, who is this Daniel D, then? Daniel D, DD. . . Who would have some personality similar to William De'Worde, inspire some level of. . . Hmm. . . .)
(You sit down and lean back, closing your eyes. Do the Siffrin thing, breathe in. . . and out. . .)
(You felt paper run over your fingers, a grand, never ending library of information. Book covers, names, Daniel D. . . No, not a real persons name. . . A book? No, not that, you walk, drift, hand tracing the covers of books. You pull one. It was covered in a soft darkless cloth. Siffrin, who leads to acting, to plays, and plays have characters. The characters Siffrin likes, you like, and it's. . .)
". . . So, it's all about trickery to you?" (You mumble the lines to yourself.) "Daniel Dankovsky."
(Daniel Dankovsky of the play "Pathologic." A story of a town suffering from a plague. Dankovsky is one of our protagonists, an idiot, but smart. Someone who means well, but fails at every step. Gems. . .)
(Perci Monet, you have some interesting heros.)
(You look at the title of the booklet. "Stories of Uldarmitch." A collection of histories and tales from a small town past Mwudu. Some of them were quite interesting; Daily life, history, tall tales. But one thing that you do note, is that the author was very dramatic. Familiarly dramatic. You chuckle, gems, and he couldn't have come up with any better pseudonym?)
(You hear someone talking at the front desk, oh whatever. You're just an old lady who likes history. So, Nine, ten years ago, Perci was publishing smaller books under the pseudonym Daniel D.W. De'Worde. Around eight years ago, he stopped. And then five years ago, he and Merlon traveled together and published history.
(. . . So, Perci, what did you do in that three year break?)
"Well, it was closer to four years."
(You look up, Perci Monet was standing a few feet away from the table you sat at. You glare at him.)
". . . May I sit down?" (He gestures to a chair out of arms reach from you.)
"Fine." (You put your pen down.)
(Perci sits.) "Enjoying my work, Madame?"
"I can admit good writing when I see it." (You hold up a hand and make a face.) "But really, Daniel Dankovsky William De'Worde? Of all things?"
"Aha. . . I-It was, quite the phase I will admit." (He rubbed his neck.) "One I am very much over, thank you!"
"You will not live this down." (You look back down at your notes.) ". . . What are you doing here, anyways."
". . . Funnily enough, I needed a distraction."
"Ha!" (You glance at him.) "You can't escape the saviors no matter where you go, it seems."
"Hahaaa. . . No, I can't."
"Mmhm." (You look over your notes for a moment, then look up at Perci. He's looking away from you. . . Who are you, Perci Monet? Or, a better question.) "Who was the Monet family."
(He glances to you, then away. A scowl planted on his face.) ". . . They're nobody important, not anymore."
(You look at the sea of books with his name on it.) "Forgotten by history, one could say?"
"Forgotten?" (Perci stands up.) "That's one way to put it."
"Leaving so soon?" (You rest your head in your palm.)
"If this is our subject of conversation, then yes." (He turns to leave.)
(You don't say anything as you see him walk out of the library.)
(. . . . . . . .)
(You look to your research notes, and write down a single line. "Who were the Monets?")
>>>
(Nille)
(THWACK. THWACK. THWACK. THWACK.)
(You wipe the sweat from your brow, it wasn't particularly hot, but still! You were working on a little gift for Ramos. One of the wooden gardening boxes in the front garden had broken and you were building a new one. It wasn't even that hard! A few pieces of wood, bang em' together, and there you go!)
(You get up and stretch, it was getting late in the day. The gardening box was nearly done, but you shouldn't push yourself too hard. You sit down in the grass and lay back.)
(. . . What the crab have you gotten yourself into.)
(Yeah absolutely you'd love to go on a big ol' adventure with the crabbin' Saviors! Your little sibling is one of them even! Best thing to happen after being frozen. Get to see the country, no, crab that, could see the world!)
(Theeeen first big destination Bonbon nearly got kidnapped, Siffrin nearly died, and had to fight off some guy who turned into a sadness!! And then that the same guy joins the group!)
(Oh and then there's the inn, where everything's fine until Mirabelle and Siffrin come back half dead saying you were mind controlled! You don't even remember most of that day!!!)
(Don't even need to get into yesterday. Ugh, Change really wasn't giving you a break, huh.)
(You turn to the sound of the door opening. Oh it was just Siffy with, wait no that couldn't be Sif could it, 'cause he had a couple cups of tea with him. You sit up and wave.) "Heya, uuuuuh Aster, right?"
"Y-yes, that's, yes." (Change, it sounded like he was about to cry! He holds up the cups.) "Tea?"
"Sure." (Was never really your thing, but why not)
(Aster walks over and hands you the cup. You take a sip, huh. Pretty good. He's still standing, awkwardly.)
". . . So how you like the new job?"
"The- what?" (He looks at you, confused.)
"Y'know, as a scarecrow. Since you're standing around all day, c'mon sit down."
"O-oh-" (He sinks down a bit, embaressed, and sits down. Taking a sip from his own tea.)
". . . Soooooo." (You turn to look at Asterion, resting your head on a hand.) "Ramos."
"R-ramos?"
"Yeah, Ramos." (You wave a hand.) "Way I hear it, Sif's the only one of your little group who likes them, right?"
"I-I, well. . ." (he looks away.) ". . . I don't, know. Saffron, Loop, Mal, Null, they all don't, don't quite trust them, but. . ."
"Buuuuut?" (You lean in a bit more.) "I didn't hear your name on that list."
". . . I am, undecided!" (He turned back to you, a very strained smile on his face.) "There's, oh, just ah, other things to, worry about!"
"Suuuuuure." (You roll your eyes and go to take another sip of your drink.) "Weeeell, y'know if Siffy made a choice yet?"
". . . I, maybe. ." (He looks away again.) "B-but, but he might, hold off on that. Because of, w-well. . ."
". . . Yeah, I gotchya." (You take another sip, and sigh.) ". . . Sooooo, did you uh, have another reason for comin' out with tea? Or no."
"Oh. . . W-well. . ." (He rubs his shoulder and puts the tea to the side.) ". . . C-could, you teach me how to do some protection craft?"
"Wha. . ?" (You tilt your head.) "First off, aren't you pierce craft? Second off, why not ask Isabeau?"
"Ah, well. ." (He shook his head and took a breath.) "I'm, not actually pierce, myself and Mal are both protection, somehow. A-and, I would, be intimidated by asking, Isabeau. . ."
". . . Heh, alright." (You stretch and hop up.) "On ya feet, Aster, training starts now."
"N-now?!?" (He jumped to his feet, surprised.)
"Yeah, right now. Think fast!" (You grin cheekily, and take a swing at him.)
>>>
(Bonnie)
(You yawn and rub the sleep from your eyes. Whuh. . ? You fell asleep?!? When did you crabbin fall asleep. You just sat down on the couch for a second! Stupid, stupid crabface Bonnie. Someone put a blanket over you, too.)
(Bleh, what were you even dreaming about? Just another boring walk down those same boring crabbing hallways? Stupid. Stupid nightmares were getting boring. Always the same stupid stuff!!! Bleh!!!)
(What time was it anyway, it looked late. Light from a sunset was coming through the windows, and you could hear someone cooking. Guess it must be close to dinnertime then- HEY WAIT.)
(You hop off the couch and walk to the kitchen. WHO was using YOUR KITCHEN!!)
(Uh, Siffrin, apparently.)
(Why was Siffrin in the kitchen, cooking? Yeah cooking. They were making soup?!? You walk up to them and they don't even notice you!!)
". . . CRABFACE!!!"
"WA-" (Siffrin jumped like a cat, taking a few steps back.)
"What're you doing?" (You get on your tip-toes to look into the soup pot. Some veggies, cream. . .) "Where's your crabbing meat crabface! And aren't you banned from the kitchen?"
(You turn to them with a smug look on your face, but that changes to worry real quick when you see how panicked they looked. It was like they a ghost, or uh. . .)
". . . 'Frin?" (You ask, They rappidly nod their head, you snort.) "Nuh uh."
(They sink down a bit, and look away.) ". . . I-I'll, just go-"
"Hey!!!" (You run over and stand right in front of them.) "Hey, hey!! You didn't do anything wrong, stupidface!!"
(He takes a step back and stammers out his words.) "B-but, I, uh. . ."
"Hey." (You wave your arms.) "Do the breathing thing, right? Okay?"
". . . A-alright. . ."
(The two of you breathe in, and out. You wave your arms again.) "Hey, you see me, right?"
"I-I, I do, yes?" (He looks confused.)
"Okay! I'm gonna hug you, then."
(Before he can respond, you wrap your arms around them. They felt so soft, cloak was soft, real soft and nice. It actually did feel familiar. . . The nice part of those nightmares, where Sif would teach you how to fight.)
(Notfrin very, very slowly returns the hug. Hold it for a few second, and let go. Your cheeky grin was back in place.) "Heh, better?"
". . . A, a little." (He rubs his shoulder and looks away.)
"Good, stupidface." (You walk back over to the soup.) "Uhm, youuu're not 'Frin, right?"
"N-no it's, it's Aster. . ." (He walks next to you, still a couple steps away though.)
"Well you're acting like a scardeyfrin, 'Ster!!" (You sneer and look into the soup, giving it a stir.) "Why 'ymaking soup?"
"I ah. . . Wanted to, make, something nice?"
(You squint at him.)
". . . F-for, well, Ramos, and everyone?"
"Uh huh?" (You go back to the soup.)
". . ." (He sighs and takes another breath.) ". . . I want to know how to cook, just in case, or so I could, help around with some things."
(. . . HUH!)
(Yeah that's different than 'Frin. Why though? You're the cook after all!!)
(But that doesn't mean he can't cook too!! C'mon!! You should show him some basics.)
"Mmmm okay! Hold this!" (You hand Aster the cooking spoon.) "Keep stiring, I'll get spices and show you how to make a really good soup!!"

After seeing the Obey Me news I was heartbroken. I hate feeling that way so I tried to think about what this "new era" could have in store for us in the hopes of cheering myself up and this is what I thought of. I wanna start by saying that I highly doubt this is actually something that could happen but thinking about it did help me feel a little better so I thought I'd share my idea with y'all.
What if they made a full length Obey Me video game? Like you'd get to customize your own MC that you can actually run around as instead of just being a cute little pink sheep. They could make it Persona-esque in that you go to RAD during the day and can hang out with the others after school and then they could add a dungeon crawling aspect to it but just frame it as like you're playing one of Levi's interactive video games. They could go full JRPG with it and have each character be able to be a part of your party and everyone has their own special moves and cool outfits and weapons and you'd be fighting different monsters for whatever reason. With a full length game you'd be able to better flesh out the story and relationships between not only the other characters but also between MC and the characters. You could also make the player feel more involved in the game especially with the intimacy scenes. Make it so you can't just date everyone all at once without consequences or make it so there are so many different routes to take through the game so you can have a reason to replay the game over and over again with different outcomes each time. There is so many things they could do with a full length video game.
Obviously it takes a lot of time, money, and resources to make something like that but I think the reward would be worth it for everyone involved. Fans get more of the characters they love and Solmare gets more money to keep them afloat. Yes the player would have to shell out $60+ for the game but I personally feel like it'd be worth it. They could do little optional dlc for like special outfits and such too. I would not only pre-order the game but I'd buy whatever special edition they had.
Again I don't actually see this happening but it would be so fucking amazing if they were to do it. I'd wait as long as they needed if they were to take their time and fully flesh it out so we got the best product they could develop.

Patience: ~Jungle Pool SOS!~
➼ pairing: Kyoya Ootori x Reader ➼ summary: when kyoya offers up his families yet to open resort no one could have guessed what would actually happen. ➼ what to expect: “I have a duty of care for you" ➼ warnings: none ➼ Part six | Part eight
Now considering this was technically considered a club activity you have to admit this was the most relaxed you had been in a while. The sun beaming down on you while you sun bathe, even the usual drama of host club antics get lost in the serenity of an empty resort.
"I must admit Kyoya, when I joked a few years ago that the ootori group should create a holiday resort and label it as a form of therapy I didn't think you took it seriously" you muse, eyes closed as you bring in the sun rays.
Kyoya shrugs but quickly remembers that you can't actually see him "Believe it or not I don't completely disregard your ideas, expecially when they truly have merit, my father seemed to agree"
You hum knowingly at what he actually meant by that statement "I'm assuming that he doesn't know that it was my idea then" You tease, not really being that mad about the stolen idea, it wasn't like Kyoya was getting any direct monetary profit from the resort. "I did try crediting you but he had a hard time believing a fifteen year old girl came up with it by herself"
You weren't exactly surprised, you had met Kyoya's father after all, you knew what it was like by now. Luckily you were too relaxed to care at that moment.
There was a moment of silence, peace between the two of you. It was actually something you enjoyed when spending time with Kyoya, the two of you never forced conversation for the sake of it, which on it's own sounds sad but it makes any words that the two of you do exchange all the more important.
"If...you have any more ideas like that...tell me about them...I can at least appreciate a good idea when it comes from you" you laughed under your breath, "Well of course" lifting your sunglasses to rest against your head, sitting up to face him properly "You have taste"
"Why thank you my dear" he joked, taking a sip of his drink, watching chaoes unfold as Tamaki and the Twins argue over what Haruhi should wear. Typical.
“Haru-chan! Let’s play! You wanna go swimming in the current pool with me?” Honey tugs on Haruhi’s arm with a pink float decorated with bunnies clinging to his waist.
“Nah. I’m not gonna swim today. Hold on. You know how to swim; you still need that float?”
Honey shakes his head, “Mm-mm. Just looks cuter this way, you know?” Honey spins on his heel to go prancing in the other direction toward the current pool.
“Mm, he’s right. Those bunnies are pretty cute.”
“He’s so innocent.” The twins materialize on either side of your chair despite the umbrella above them.
You sigh, leaning back in your sun lounger basking in the controlled chaos you are used to.
“No way! You’ve got it all wrong!”
You start, awakened by a powerful rumbling in the ground and echoing voice.
“Is that Renge?” Haruhi turns her head to the offending sound.
A cabana splits in half, and the trees part to make way for her infamous contraption, the rumbling sound now accompanied by her shrill laugh.
“How does she do that? It’s like the rig follows us.” Haruhi sweats.
you groan, pinching the bridge of your nose "One day, all i want is one day"
“That outfit’s pretty impressive,” Hikaru observes Renge’s two-piece bikini and a tattoo winding up her ribcage.
“What’s with the tattoo on your stomach?” Kaoru inquires.
“Oh, that? You don’t recognize it? I’m cosplaying.”
“Yeah, as who?”
“La-La~”
“LaLa? Like the manga magazine?” Kaoru grumbles.
“Her petite and slender frame, her blue eyes that light up young men’s faces, her singing voice! I am Quon Kisaragi!” Renge extolls.
“I wouldn’t have guessed.” Haruhi sneers.
“I had no idea who you were supposed to be.” Tamaki shrugs.
Once again, the twins and Tamaki are huddled in a circle as Renge poses for Haruhi, who watches, miffed.
“Hey, Boss, are you sure it’s okay for Renge to be dressed-”
“-like that?” They point to the girl in question.
“Well, yeah. That’s okay.” Tamaki shrugs indifferently.
“And why is that?”
“Because it’s cosplay? I guess.”
“Listen up, boys! You obviously need help understanding Haninozuka’s hidden motives. Look!” Renge notes, pointing over to Honey and Mori.
“Takashi!” Honey calls, landing in the current pool and letting the current sweep him gently away as Mori watches fondly.
“What are you talking about?” Tamaki implores.
“Think about what he said to you earlier.”
“Just looks cuter this way, you know?”
“He’s not being as sweet and innocent as you think.”
From the chair next to you, Kyoya shoves his glasses up his nose, “I agree. Try putting the word 'I’ at the beginning of that sentence.”
“I just look cuter this way, you know?”
“I look cute!”
“He planned that?!”
“That’s Haninozuka for you. In the last part, he felt threatened by another loli-boy type, so he’s taken steps to keep his rank. I should give him more credit. He’s a lot smarter than I thought.” Renge descends into the ground and disappears.
“Hey! Look at this, everybody!” Honey draws everyone’s attention to him and Mori.
Mori swims diligently against the current with Honey on his back.
“Check it out! Look! Even though we’re swimming really fast, we never go any farther than we are now!” He waves excitedly.
“So, what’s up with him?” Tamaki groans.
“Could he really be that smart?” Haruhi interjects.
Hikaru cocks his super-soaker water gun; the squeaking draws Tamaki’s attention to them before he’s blasted in the face with a stream of water.
“I got ya!” Hikaru winks handsomely, resting his weapon of choice on his shoulder.
“C'mon, Boss, let’s go! Let’s have a water gun fight.”
“It’ll be me and Kaoru against you. If you get it in the face, you lose. What do you say?” Hikaru implores, hand on his hip.
“Forget it.” Tamaki dries his face, “Why would I want to subject myself to a childish game like that?”
An idea forms in each of the twins’ minds.
All of a sudden, you’re grabbed by your wrist and pulled from your nap with an exclamation of surprise.
“y/n, I think it’s time that we got married! Then we’ll honeymoon in Atami!”
You quickly break from their hold, sitting back down on the lounger really not wanting to get involved. "Considering if y/n was going to marry anyone it would be me you clearly haven't thought through your plan very well" Kyoya spoke up, glaring at the twins before nodding towards haruhi.
The twins quickly pick up what he's putting down "Good point Kyoya, we were thinking about this all wrong, Haruhi clearly is the better option SHE should marry us"
"gee thanks" you mutter but its clear that it did the job of pissing off Tamaki, breaking out a waterfight between the three of them.
“I’ll get you guys! Sideways-leaping shot!” Tamaki launches himself sideways, but the twins shield themselves with two comically large tiki masks.
“That’s cheating!” When Tamaki lands, his foot catches on the previously discarded banana peel, and he tumbles noisily into a totem pole, head first.
You wince and suck in a breath through clenched teeth, “Oh- that didn’t sound good.”
One by one, the animals on the totem pole’s eyes glow an intimidating red until the final animal at the top is shining.
You remove your sunglasses from your eyes and place them on your head, “That… doesn’t sound good either.”
As if he senses something is amiss, Mori drops his glass at your feet, attention diverting to Honey in the current pool, still carelessly kicking his feet.
Something underneath the water rumbles, and a wave develops until it’s practically a tsunami. With wide eyes, Honey watches as it heads straight towards him.
“Wah~!” It crashes over him, and his bunny float is sent soaring into the air- but without him inside as he’s flushed in the wave.
“Honey-Senpai!” You lurch from your chair, and your sunglasses fall discarded to the ground.
“Mitsukuni!”
Both you and Mori hurry to see if you have enough time to save him, but Mori slips on the same banana peel and falls harshly to the unforgiving concrete.
“Mori-Senpai,” You call in concern.
Tamaki jabs a heroic finger in the air, “Gentlemen, we’re going after Honey-Senpai! That pool looks like the quickest way!” he announces, referring to the pool Honey was treading water in before he was washed away.
“Charge!” Haruhi, Mori, and the twins follow Tamaki’s lead as they sprint haphazardly in a random direction.
As you see that Kyoya’s stayed put, you decide that it might be best to stay put as well. His family did build this resort, after all.
“Wait! I wouldn’t go-”
It’s already too late; the club has come across the alligators in that direction. “There are alligators in there!” They flee as quickly as they can.
Tamaki jabs another heroic finger in the air, “Okay. So we can’t use that pool, then let’s try this way next!”
But where Tamaki has pointed, several more alligators appear, snapping their jaws in a warning.
“They’re here too!”
“And here!”
With his more petite, brown leather portable notebook, Kyoya’s glasses glint off the sun as he explains your current situation.
“Those alligators belong to the park’s tropical animals exhibit. I guess it is kind of dangerous to let them run wild.”
“And yet i'm supposedly the one with bad ideas?” You huff in frustration, peering at Kyoya from your crouched position on your nap chair.
“Though, the cause of our present situation seems to be the location of the switch for the current pool. I’ll have to have a little chat with our designers.” He snaps the notebook shut.
“Thanks a lot, you guys. I got some great data today.”
“You what?!” The club exclaims.
“Ok I'll admit that is a little smart" You shrug.
“This is a map of the Tropical Aqua Garden. This is our current location. We need to get here- I have a feeling that’s where Honey-Senpai probably ended up. It might be tough, because to get there, we’ll have to make it this jungle area in the southern block.”
Kyoya drags his pen along the map to indicate your path, “Distance-wise, we’re talking about 800 meters.”
“It looks like there’s a lot of undeveloped areas. And idea what might be lurking in those parts of the jungle?” Haruhi cautiously inquires.
“Since they’re still being developed, I’m afraid I don’t know.”
“Yeah, someone’s going to have to carry me.” You lift your arms high and glance around for any takers.
None. Yet. You’re going to have to work on your skills.
“Whatever’s out there could be even more dangerous-”
“-than alligators.”
“Alright. Now, this is a mission of survival! I know we can make it through the treacherous jungle in one piece… It is our sworn duty to save Honey-Senpai!”
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
In the dense plant life and humidity of the inner workings of the jungle, the sunlight is much more filtered than it was out in the open.
“Wow, this place is just like a real jungle, huh?”
If you couldn’t see the glass dome and someone had dropped you off in the middle of this theme park with no knowledge as to how you got there, you might have believed you were in the jungle.
“Yeah, and I keep hearing all of these really strange animal calls,” Haruhi grumbles.
“You don’t think that all of those animal sounds-”
“-could belong to the real thing, do you?”
Kyoya shrugs, “To be honest, I’m not sure, but I do know that my family always strives for authenticity whatever the cost.”
"There surely must be some kind of ethical issue if that is the case, wouldn't be a good healing facility if there is a serious alligator injury" you pointed out, suprised that Kyoya's family would put actually dangerous animals in an enclosed area.
Kyoya hummed "I suppose so but it also wouldn't surprise me if that was on purpose to drive more business to our hospitals" he muttered only loud enough for you to hear really. It didn't surprise you either really but you dreaded to think if that was actually the case.
As if on cue, Mori slips and falls behind the group. At the loud grunt and crash, you all turn to him. He lays unmoving with a banana peel on his face.
“Mori-Senpai is-”
“-acting as clumsy as you do, Boss.” Hikaru and Kaoru worry.
“Shut up!” Tamaki snarls as Mori sits up from his position on the ground.
Your accusations are correct- Mori is more worried than you can imagine.
The sunlight diminishes greatly, and you look overhead to see the beginnings of rainfall.
“Uh-oh, it’s about time for the squall,” Kyoya notes as he checks his wristwatch.
“Huh?”
The first few drops fall, then it turns into a downpour. You and the club take refuge in a nearby pavilion with a straw roof.
“Hey, Mori-Senpai. You seem to be really close with Honey-Senpai. Are the two of you like childhood friends?” Haruhi inquires from her seat in the pavilion beside the twins as Mori leans on the edge, watching the raindrops fall.
"You don't know?" hikaru asked "They're cousins" Kaoru added. You lean back against the wall of the shelter you are all in, sighing as you look out into the rain.
"Now this is the kind of rain that I remember" you mutter to yourself, the rain reminding you of europe. Kyoya also leans against the wall next to you "Hello? It's me. Well, we've had an incident that's caused some trouble"
you look up to see Kyoya on the phone, most likely to either his father or someone high up in his private police force. "No she's fine. yes she's unharmed" You raised an eyebrow, obvious that he was talking about you although you were confused on why whoever he was talking to was asking about you.
In the mean time Mori and Haruhi seem to wander off "Yes, at once, please" he finally put down the phone. "My family's private police force is going to send in a search and rescue team to help us, they're better equipped to find Honey-senpai than we are. so let's just go back to the gate and wait there"
The others weren't listening except for you, too busy arguing over Haruhi. "Hey, where are Mori and Haruhi?" he questioned as all of you left the shelter to head for the gate, but he shrugged it off, figuring they would show up at some point with a search and rescue team around.
The other boys rush ahead, still arguing "when you were on the phone before, you were talking about me? weren't you?" You ask kyoya, looking up at him as he looks ahead. "I was, why do you ask?"
You dead pan at him, head tilting at the side "You know why"
Kyoya sighs "you know I have a duty of care for you, as does my father, if I call up our police force when it is known that I am with you it is protocol to ask about your safety" he explains.
He pauses, stopping in his tracks "You know, I'm don't believe I mentioned to them that there are other visitors here. Huh. Oh well" He shrugs carrying on, hovering a hand over your back to urge you forward.
however instead of finding the gate you instead find a series of police officers on the floor with honey, Mori and Haruhi standing before them. We break out into a run at the sight of them "Haruhi!" Tamaki cries.
"Are you alright?" he adds, the five of you out of breath as you come to a halt "Hey its Tama-chan!" Honey says as if he hadn't just knocked out a dozen guards.
"You okay, senpai?" Hikaru asks. "Haruhi!!!" Tamaki leaps for her "I was so worried" the twins bend down to check on the guards "I'm not sure what happened here, but at least they're alive"
"It's pretty amazing that this is Honey sepai's work"
"He must have been really holding back" they continue to poke at the guards
"Huh?"
“What do you mean he was holding back?” Haruhi queries with innocent eyes, although Tamaki is in serious pain.
“So then-”
“-you don’t know about Senpai?” The twins seem bewildered by her lack of knowledge.
“The Haninozukas are famous for their martial arts. Not only have they helped train the police and SDF forces, but they’ve also worked with several overseas military forces.” Hikaru elaborates as they abandon their fascination with the grounded soldiers.
“Honey-Senpai, in particular, has been called the dreadnaught of the Haninozuka family. By the time he was in middle school, he’d become the national champion in both karate and judo.”
Honey turns when he feels he’s called, then giggles with closed eyes.
That’s the karate and judo champion for you.
“Mori-Senpai’s no slouch either. He won the national championship in kendo when he was just in middle school.”
Haruhi looks to her savior, and he turns when his name is mentioned.
“So how were you able to find us, Honey-Senpai?” the twins inquire as Honey has returned to his natural aura.
“It wasn’t hard. It didn’t take me long to reach the end of the current pool, so I decided to look for you guys.”
“We humbly apologize!” A different, more foreign voice pipes in, and the attention of the club directs to the soldiers, now reoriented from their initial shock and kneeling to the ground in a show of respect.
“I am a second-generation student of the Ishizuka Dojo!”
“I’m a student of the Todoroki Dojo!”
“And I’m from the Otakeh Dojo! We are in your debt!”
Honey’s eyes and posture display innocence and confusion, “Why? Is something wrong?” His voice can easily be mistaken for an eight-year-old boy’s.
“Yes, sir! We’re so sorry, sir! We were unaware that we were searching for Mitsukuni Haninozuka! We’ve committed a terrible offense here! I apologize for this confrontation. But my dojo will be so excited to hear that I’ve come face to face with the great Haninozuka! I cherish this moment!”
You snort, scooting closer to Kyoya, “I bet if he offered them an autograph, they’d pass out.” You snicker. You almost draw a smile from him, but rather he gives you a condescending look.
“What? I bet I’m not wrong.” You pout.
Honey takes Mori by the wrist and gently brings him down to his level, patting him gingerly on the forehead, “Takashi~ you did an amazing job of protecting Haru-chan.”
This patronizing show of affection elicits a smile from Kyoya as he adjusts his glasses.
“I bet you were pretty lonely without me around, huh?”
Mori’s eyes dart to the right where Haruhi is stood, “I don’t know if I’d say that.”
Honey smiles with a fond giggle.
♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡ ♡
With the sun setting, the clear, blue water now fades to an orange, coral color as it washes upon the shore. It has taken the rest of the day to walk back to where you’d begun this journey.
Despite his earlier resentment, you now ride on Kyoya’s back, limp arms slung around his neck and your cheek pressed to his back, eyes contently shut.
Back to your much deserved nap.
“You know, maybe we should go to the beach next.” The twins stride ahead with arms casually thrown behind their heads.
“Yeah, the beach would be nice.” Kaoru agrees.
Kyoya glances over his shoulder at your relaxed features and smiles fondly. He’ll have to keep you away from the water.
“You idiots, Haruhi’s not interested in anything like that.” Tamaki scoffs confidently.
Haruhi smiles gently, “Actually, I might like to go to the beach.” It stuns the club, each one stopping in their tracks to look at her.
“I may not be into this silly water park but I like the ocean. It would be nice to go the beach, and it’s so pretty.”
Completely recovered and acting like he hasn’t just opposed it, Tamaki glitters, “Yeah! Alright. Then that’s where we’ll go next time.”
“We’re all gonna go to the beach, Tama-chan?” Honey quips, perched on Mori’s shoulders.
He hums gently, “That’ll be fun, don’t you think?” His inquiry is directed to Mori below him.
Mori simpers fondly, “Yeah,” It’s not hard to pick up the genuine agreement in his tone.
Next time on patience 'The Sun, the sea, and the host club!'

marriage asks are making me wonder how it would be like to marry himeko...
r better be happy they got to marry himeko cuz they got to be w the girl that every sapphic in the universe wants.
himeko had to travel around the space cause she knew she'd drown in pussy if she stayed on ground 😭😭
oh my god…. i can’t even picture the bliss. getting to marry the prettiest, kindest, sweetest angel in the cosmos you have to be some kind of otherworldly being. himeko’s the dream girl of every sapphic in the universe and their parents who would be thrilled to have her as a daughter in law. shes just so perfect to me omfg. i know she’s had to politely shut down so many love confessions because “trailblazing is her path” but me personally i’d embark on that train and leave everything i know behind if it meant i’d be seeing her every day. idc. drowning in pussy is sending me tho😭😭😭
marrying himeko means you have the most reliable partner ever. she’s always there to help even when you dont realize you need any, she’s the best listener and gives the greatest, warmest hugs whenever you need one. does her best to cheer you up if you’re sad, always follows through on her promises and commitments to you, finds creative solutions that work for the both of you if you’re at an impasse like wow. she’s just a great partner all around because shes so understanding and wants to make you happy above all. physical touch is a must; whether it’s full or side hugs, holding hands, cupping your cheek, a hand on your lower back, gripping your thigh, playing with the ring on your finger, kissing you chastely or deeply— she does it all. cuddling at night is her favorite thing and she loves being the big spoon. baths where the back of her head rests on your shoulder and your arms are around her… simple and innocent acts of affection through physical touch makes her melt. sometimes she lifts her left hand and stares at her ring with the cutest smile on her face. she remembers every anniversary and plans something cute for each even if its small. she’s a busy girl but still insists on making time for you when she can. you’re never apart too long without her making up for it in the most romantic, thoughtful way. im rambling but marriage with hime would actually be equivalent to walking on clouds, she never stays mad longer than a day and wants to fix things up immediately because she cant stand you being angry either each other and shes great at compromise anyway so shes just perfect ok. i need to propose to her

The First Time You Met | Joseph Quinn x Reader
synopsis: short one-shot of meeting Joe at the pub
warnings: None, English jargon
word count: 1.5k
.
.
.
You were sat at your desk working quietly when your co worker knocked on the wood as if it was a door, getting your attention easily.
“What are you doing tonight?” She asked you.
“Uh, nothing I guess. Go home, open a bottle of wine and watch the telly til I fall asleep.” You smiled up at her, as if that was the high life.
“Oh come on, it’s Friday. Come out for once.” She practically pleaded with you.
“I don’t know. I’d have to get home and change and then come back in. Where do you even want to go?”
“You don’t have to go crazy, we’re only gonna’ be at the Churchill.”
You thought for moment. You hadn’t been out with your friends in a while and you definitely needed a break.
Your vibrator needed a break.
The Churchill Arms was a lowkey pub that didn’t require you to dress up too much. In fact, you’d look a bit silly if you did.
“I guess I can come.” You mumbled.
Eleanor, your co worker, squealed at your agreement and gave you a tight hug around the shoulders.
“Oh, my god, yes! This is gonna’ be so much fun. We haven’t seen you out in actual months.”
“I’m sure it hasn’t been that long.”
“It has.”
You narrowed your eyes up at her in a mock offence.
“We’re heading over right after work so make sure you’re ready.”
“Okay…” you mumbled as she walked off.
You liked your friends and you liked going out, but you also like going home, putting on your big socks and getting under a fuzzy blanket with the fireplace going.
You weren’t a loner or anything, you were just comfortable being single and having no responsibilities other than yourself.
You’d made it this far alone and you were proud of yourself. It felt good to do whatever you wanted and eat whatever you wanted for tea and decorate your house however you wanted.
Something you never admitted, however, is sometimes on very rare occasions, you did feel a bit bored or lonely when you had no one to talk to about your day or your nightmares or the latest film you just watched.
Soon, five o’clock rolled around and you packed up your things and haphazardly shoved them into your purse, walking down to the lobby to meet the others. You were wearing your typical work clothes. Casual, black knitted jumper and brown plaid trousers with some maroon Mary Jane ballet flats that cost more than you should’ve paid.
Luckily for you, your place of work was very casual and easy going but “casual and easy going” in London probably meant something different to the rest of the world.
The pub was already relatively busy considering it was a Friday night but not so busy that it was practically a nightclub. This is how you liked it.
You got a table close to the back and sat as one of your other co workers went to the bar to get the first round. The atmosphere was easy going and after a short while, you felt yourself actually really having fun. The conversation flowed easily. You’d poked fun at your bosses and horrible clients, talked about upcoming projects, talked about guys (much to the dismay of the lone male co worker amongst the group), and everything in between.
After the third round of lager was brought back to the table, Eleanor leaned over to speak quietly to you.
“I don’t want to alarm you but there’s a really cute guy looking at you.” She giggled.
You rolled your eyes and paid no mind to her. Like you said before, you were quite content being a singleton.
“No really, I think you should probably chat to this one.”
You decided to entertain her and turned your head to this alleged man checking you out.
You made eye contact and felt your breath get sucked out of your lungs.
That’s fucking Joseph Quinn, you thought.
You turned back to Eleanor with a somewhat dumbfounded look on your face to see her clearly excited one.
“I doubt he is looking at me of all people.” You said, taking a large gulp of your pint.
“Dude, he’s not stopped looking at you. Even when you went up to the bar.”
“Surely not.” You were suddenly ten times more shy than before.
“Surely yes, go talk to him!” Eleanor urged. The rest of the group was completely oblivious to your conversation, too engrossed in their own. Not that you minded.
“I can’t just go talk to the Joseph Quinn you idiot. I’ll choke and trip and just make a fool of myself in someway.”
“No you won’t. You’re always so hard on yourself.”
You were now very aware of the celebrity and it was making you feel small… and hot.
“Okay I have an idea. Take a deep breath, glance over and smile and then grab your coat and go for a fag. See if he follows.”
“This is so stupid.” You said, taking a deep breath. Obviously you knew who Joseph Quinn was. You never really gave it much thought but definitely thought he was attractive, just like every one else.
“Just do it!”
“Fine!” You gritted through closed teeth.
You took the last gulp of lager and grabbed your coat, walking towards the beer garden, but not before shooting him your best smile you could muster up.
Your eyes connected for a brief moment and you felt your spine tingle.
The air outside was chillier than when you’d arrived at 6pm.
You leaned against the brick wall and pulled out a cigarette and lighter. Even though Eleanor had practically kicked you outside, you would’ve stepped out for a smoke at one point or another.
You were outside for about two minutes alone with the other drunks when the back door opened and out stepped Joseph. You could tell it was him even through your peripheral. He just had aura about him.
Slowly walking over to you, he pulled out his own smoke to pop between his lips.
“Hi.” He said with a sweet, bashful look.
“Hey.” You smiled shyly.
“Do you mind if I pinch your lighter?”
You didn’t say anything, just shyly getting your zippo out of your pocket and flicking it open, igniting the end of his cigarette and ignoring the thumping in your chest.
“Thanks.” He said, moving his head back slightly and taking a long draw.
There was short silence between the two of you until he spoke up again.
“I’m Joe, by the way.” You smiled down at you.
Wow, he was incredibly attractive this close.
“I’m Y/N.”
“Y/N.” He repeated, not breaking eye contact. “What do you do, Y/N?”
“I work in television, actually.”
“Oh really? That’s really cool. So do I.” He seemed rather excited.
“Yeah, I know.” You giggled.
“Yeah, I figured you probably did. I guess anonymity isn’t really an option for me anymore.” Joe seemed rather tense now. Perhaps he was hoping you didn’t know who he was and he’d have a real conversation for once.
“Probably not. But hey, it’s not like I’ve never been around a famous person before. I do work in television after all.” You reassured.
“So what exactly do you do in television.” He asked, taking a drag of his cigarette.
“I’m a production manager.”
“Oh wow, what have you worked on?” Joe asked you, gazing down at you.
“Uh, I worked on Fleabag, Broadchurch, a show called Sherwood. Couple things like that.” You began to get shy again. Here you were, telling a famous actor about your boring job, probably the pants back on him.
“What do you have to do exactly when you work on a show?”
“Well, I basically organise location, actors, crew, funding, marketing, all that sort of stuff…” you began to explain and Joseph looked actually genuinely interested. This never usually happened. Whenever your friends dragged you out and you began chatting to a guy, he always seemed so bored when you spoke about your job.
Not Joe, though. He was listening intently and asking actual questions and sometime during the time you’d been speaking, you both stubbed out your cigarettes and he’d stepped closer to you.
You only realised how long you’d been talking when Eleanor popped her head out to tell you they were leaving now.
“Oh, uh yeah. I’ll be right there.” You said to her before turning back to Joe.
“Sorry, I didn’t realise how late it had gotten.” You smiled.
“Yeah, neither.” He smiled shyly, rubbing the back of his neck.
“I actually had a really good time talking to you, though.” You said sincerely.
“Yeah, me too.” He smiled back.
There was a beat silence as the two of you just looked at each other. You gave him one last smile and turned to walk back inside to your friends, silently praying that he’d ask for your number or offer to walk you home or at least something.
You’d almost made it to the door when you heard Joe swiftly turn on his heal and call out to you.
“Can I have your number?” He asked, rather frantically, like he’d almost missed his shot.
You turned back to him with a small, shy smile.
“Yeah.” You giggled. “Okay.”

[You're leading Beau through the House. He's been… Nice. Asked the questions you knew the answers to, at least.] [He asked you where you were from.] [You told him you forgot.] [You're in the House's garden now. He's been looking at all the various flowers, plaques with descriptions grabbing at his attention like a moth to a lamp. You sit on a bench, close enough to hear him rattling off the facts he's reading from the signs.] [He says he thinks signs are really important, but he doesn't know why. You talk to him about it, and he mentions the stars before freezing mid-speech.] [He starts rambling everything he can remember about stars, and you try to make sure he doesn't push himself too much. It's not enough, as he coughs up a speck of blood, but you use some healing craft (it hurts, but you don't care) and sit there with him.] [You tell him everything you can remember that he didn't already tell you, this time actually making sure nobody gets hurt.] [He asks about one of the stars names, Regulus.] [You can't tell him much, but he decides then and there that, as a symbol of being part of Vaugardian culture, he'll Change his name to Regulus.] [He says it feels right. You reply it feels nice to say.] [It's half-true. It's easier, at least.] [You spend the rest of the time trying to come up with better nicknames than Reg, which is harder than it really seems.] [You end up calling him Sunshine. It's only slightly ironic.] [You end up agreeing it'd be for the best if you stick together for the time.] [You feel a pit in your stomach as you acquire the Memory of Sunshine. You don't tell him about it.] [He picks one of the flowers, asking of course, and you choose one as well.] [He picks a willow, you pick a zinnia.]
[This is your last day.] [You'd berate whoever forgot to remind you, but you aren't going to make another clone of your past self over something so petty.] [You can't sleep.] [You stare up at the ceiling for the sixth time this week. It's starting to feel like the clocktower. You need to get out of here.] [You get up, passing Sunshine as you sneak through the halls.] [None of the Housemaidens are awake, but it's mostly habit at this point.] [You're in the garden again.] [You walk over to a comfortable-looking patch of grass, and lie down.] [You look up at the stars, alone.] [It's familiar, but different. Different is good.] [Your Sunshine told you that the open roof design was made so that the plants could get enough sunlight to grow, but that they put a tarp over it in winter so that snow won't get all over everything.] [The perfect amount of care so that you won't wither, and that you will grow.] [What a wonderful idea.] [You turn on cue to someone who isn't there. You say all the right things without anyone to hear them.] [It's not even your script and yet you still memorized every word.] [This isn't getting you anywhere.] [You move to a stump in the center of the garden. One of the Housemaidens told you it was enhanced by craft to grow and decay at higher speed than usual, a symbol of Change.] [It's not fast enough to bother you, at least.] [There's a neighboring stump, one crafted out of stone, made to never Change. A duality in eternal life and eternal death.] [You don't know whose bright idea it was to make the stone stump, considering it seems very contrary to Change, but you can appreciate the gall.] [Regulus walks in. He says he didn't know you were here.] [He wears his only other outfit, armor of darkless with lightless stars speckling here and there.] [Sitting on the parallel stump, he gazes up at the stars. You can see tears fall from his eyes.] [He is happy, and you're unsatisfied] [You're... Unsatisfied?]
"Which one is your favorite?" <"I don't have one, yet."> "I thought you might like the one you named yourself after." <"Not everything's in a name, guiding light."> "Is that your new nickname for me? How cute." <"I thought hard about it. Something to fit your one for me. ...Do you like it?"> "...Yeah. You're good at nicknames." <They look up to the stars alongside you. They seem deep in thought.> "I thought you were asleep." <"I was, I think. I thought the same of you."> "I take pride in my acting skills." <You do often catch them wearing a smile that doesn't belong on their face.> <"You are very good. I always preferred songwriting."> "Oh?" <"The rhythm that goes with the tune, the meter and rhyme, it's just enchanted me, I feel."> <"...I don't know how long this has been the case, but I know it to be true."> <They look jealous. They clearly haven't realized it, since the false smile hasn't taken its place, yet.> <They begin to hum a tune. It sounds like a comfortable place, a time of love. It sounds like children playing and birds singing. Then, they stop.> <You, in turn, hum your own tune. A Change hymn of ticking gears and twisting architecture. Of the nature of life and how it goes around and around. Then, you can't remember any more.> <You don't know how you feel about Change, but you are ever so grateful for its followers. You cannot deny it that these Houses are marvels of craft. You smile.> "I'm heading back to bed. You?" <"Yes, I feel I should as well. May I accompany you?"> <They give a bewildered look. Maybe they don't- > "But we'd be heading the same way anyway?" <Oh.> <"There are many paths to the same destination."> <After a moment's pause, they sigh and let you come along with them.> <You dream of weeping willows that cry and a great shadow overtaking your own. You will not remember these when you wake.>
[Your time is done. You're satisfied.]
[You couldn't take your role back, but that's his fault for leaving you alone. You're satisfied.]
[You're satisfied. You fade at last.]
...
[You feel a thread pulled to its limits. A fire burning hot hot hot and something breaking, failing, rotting. You gag on nothing as starlight beams out of your eyes and mouth.]
[The string pulls, choking you as you attempt to scream, but you have no mouth. You attempt to cry, but you have no eyes.]
[The thread snaps.]
[You feel a pulling in your head.]
[And you feel your heart..

[You wake up in a room. The first thing you take in is UNIMAGINABLE PAIN. You scream and scream and scream- there are footsteps. You hear the familiar sound of healing craft as the pain subsides the slightest bit. Not enough to be anywhere near comfortable, but you aren't screaming anymore.]
[You sit up, hands grasping at what you realize far too late are bedsheets. They rip in your hands, piercing craft chugging through your fingertips like the drip drip drip of blood.]
[You're already babbling apologies when]-
"Oh thank goodness you're awake, bright stranger."
[That voice. Not from the healer you don't recognize them but you turn to the neighboring bed- you're in an infirmary? -and see another stranger.]
[You recognize that accent but you don't recognize... Him?]
"[Who-]"
[You cough on your words- Vaugardian, Loop! Try again~]
[The familiar stranger looks at you with wonder.]
"Say- say that again, will you?"
"[What, 'who?']"
"No- what was that language?"
[You don't know.]
"[I don't know. Where am I?]"
[The familiar stranger- you're just going to call him the King, it's too similar to be a coincidence. You've never been lucky enough to even consider otherwise. -looks disappointed before lighting up again. His Vaugardian is rough, but understandable.]
"Ah! You're in the Bambouche house of change! Or uhm... The one closest to Bambouche I think... I couldn't really understand them the best."
[The King looks awkward. How could this pathetic whelp end up as the intimidating monster that killed- Blinding- He's speaking]
"They call me castaway, but I prefer Beau, he and him, please. What about you?"
[Oh this is hilarious. The Change god thinks its so blinding funny doesn't it. You're laughing. You're cackling and guffawing and]-
"[Siffrin, they/them, nice to meet you!]"
"Oh, like the savior?"
[What.]
